Online assault rise

By Luke Voogt Social media “predators” have contributed to a 79 per cent rise in Geelong sex offences over 12 months, according to a counselling service.

Offenders were increasingly using online messaging and dating platforms, Barwon Centre Against Sexual Assault (CASA) warned.

“A lot of them are very serious sexual assaults,” said CASA chief Helen Bolton.

“There does seem to be cohort of people who use dating apps for predatory behaviour.

That’sas certainly increased the number of sexual offences we see.”

Sex offences almost doubled to 739 in Geelong during the year to September 2017, up

from 413 at the same time last year.

Victims reporting historic offences drove most of the rise, Ms Bolton said.

She credited recent royal commissions into family violence and child sexual abuse along with awareness campaigns on the culpability of perpetrators for encouraging more victims to come forward.

“People now understand support is available to them and they are not alone.”

Geelong Superintendent Craig warned dating app members to be careful.

Offences on apps like Tinder included sexting and “serious contact” between previously unassociated perpatators and victims, he said.

A 50-year-old tourist was left fighting for life after colliding with a tip truck while driving on the wrong side of the road at Wurdiboluc on Thursday, according to police.

Paramedics airlifted the man to hospital but the truck driver, also in his 50s, escaped with minor injuries, police said.

Show ‘stealer’ Police have charged former Royal Geelong Show executive officer Jacqui Patmore with allegedly stealing about $100,000 from the event.

Ms Patmore is due to face several hundred charges in court next year following a two-year investigation, police said.

Tradie toll Geelong tradies and other commuters face almost $13 in daily tolls to use the proposed Westgate Tunnel, South Barwon MP Andrew Katos has warned.

The Andrews government’s tunnel toll would cost $12.58 “just to enter Melbourne’s CBD,” Mr Katos said.

Pedestrian dies An 85-year-old from Herne Hill has died in hospital after a bus hit him.

The man died in hospital after the collision at the intersection of Autumn St and Minerva Rd about 3.15pm on 8 December.

Interchange probe Geelong’s controversial bus interchange in Moorabool Street faces a shakeup after councillors this week adopted a plan to revitalise the city centre’s ‘West End’ precinct.

A City Hall statement said the plan would investigate “opportunities for resolving issues associated with the bus interchange”, which traders have blamed for antisocial behaviour outside their stores.

Concern over Waurn Ponds police contact

Officers gave out more than 30 coffees as they spoke to “people of all ages from all walks of life,” Sgt Thomas said.

“They were very pleased to see local police out mixing with members of the public.”

Sgt Thomas said Waurn Ponds police hoped “to get out and say g’day to” to their local community more often.

“It was really nice to be able to smile at people and have them smile back at you,” he said.

Geelong police will hold community forums at Geelong West Town Hall 7pm on Monday, and Lara Hall (6pm) and Centenary Hall, Norlane, (8pm) on Tuesday.

The inability to contact police has emerged as the number-one concern for Waurn Ponds residents in recent consultations.

The complaint was the most common at a Coffee with a Cop event on Wednesday, according to Acting Sergeant Mark Thomas.

“We had a lot of acknowledgement of the frustrations we face,” he said.

“They don’t see us out and about as they might like - which is why we were out there engaging with the public.”

Complaints at public forums and pressure from local State Opposition MPs led the sta-

tion to reinstate its front desk hours from eight to 16 in July.

Earlier this year South Barwon MP Andrew Katos accused the government of leaving the police station understaffed.

But nobody raised a lack of staff or opening hours as a concern on Wednesday morning, Sgt Thomas said.

He described the public reaction to Wednesday’s Coffee with a Cop as overwhelmingly positive.

“I reckon we would have spoken to well over 50 or 60 people. They were really keen to engage and have a free coffee with the members who were available.”

Serial candidate Libby Coker will again challenge Liberal MP Sarah Henderson in the federal seat of Corangamite after securing Labor preselection this week.

Members chose Ms Coker, a Surf Coast councillor who lost the 2016 election and a 2014 bid for the state seat of Polwarth, over Geelong lawyer, company director and Cats board member Diana Taylor.

Lara's waste 'hill' in VCAT

Graduates' ride of passage A group of Geelong year 12 students rode into their graduation on Wednesday night after conquering the iconic Great Ocean Road.

The graduates were among 28 Newcomb Secondary College students cycling in a weeklong ride.

“It’s like a rite of passage out of the school,” teacher Stephen Bath told the Indy from Lorne on Tuesday.

“The year 12s that are with us will have time to get home and have a shower before graduation.”

The school cancelled its plans for a ride in Gippsland last week with some hasty phone calls and emails, to avoid torrential rain.

“With that catastrophic weather forecast we would have been in trouble,” Stephen said.

But that failed to stop the students getting on their bikes the following week to continue

the school’s 43-year-old tradition.

Their comradery impressed Stephen as they negotiated steep inclines and tour buses after peddling off from the Otways on Saturday.

“They all jump in and look after each other,” he said.

The group rode about 50km a day, according to Year 12 student Tylah Hewson.

“We might have one or two days where we do 60km to 75km or higher,” he said on Tuesday.

“I had to miss out a couple of training rides but I was able to get my body back in gear with the first two days of the tour.”

Fellow Year 12 student Jared Mason enjoyed challenging inclines of the scenic ride.

He was excited for the ride home from Lorne to Newcomb on Wednesday for graduation.

“I can’t wait to experience that.”

If the City and C&D Recycling fail to do so, they will appear at VCAT for a tribunal hearing in March.

The current action comes after the City’s previous action against the company through VCAT and the Magistrates’ Court.

The Indy made multiple attempts to contact C&D Recycling via the companies publicly listed phone numbers before going to press on Thursday.

The State Government updated its waste management policy in response to a fire at a recycling plant at Coolaroo which saw 150 homes evacuated in July.

The government appointed a taskforce consisting of authorities included the EPA to implement extra management measures to ensure community safety.

To date, the taskforce has conducted 88 inspections of 73 sites and issued 37 statutory notices.

Fears of a toxic blaze have forced City Hall to pursue legal action against a Lara recycling company.

The City will face C&D Recycling at the Victorian Administrative and Civil Tribunal next year following the company’s alleged noncompliance with its planning permit.

“The safety of residents is the highest priority,” said City Hall services director Guy Wilson-Browne.

“That’s why we’re continuing to work closely with the EPA and CFA to resolve safety issues at the C&D Recycling site on Broderick Road, Lara.”

The City of Greater Geelong opposed the development of the recycling site at 300-400 Broderick Road, Lara, in 2016.

Both the EPA and CFA raised safety concerns about the operation of the site.

However, at the direction of VCAT, the City issued a planning permit for the use and development of the site, subject to various conditions, in August 2016.

City Hall issued a fire prevention notice to C&D Recycling in August 2017 over concerns the company’s nine-metre high stockpile presented a hazard.

The EPA later issued the company a statutory notice to cease accepting waste until the site complied with Victorian Government’s interim Waste Management Policy.

The company defied the notice, according to EPA chief executive officer Nial Finegan.

“EPA has been very clear in its view on how this site needs to be managed,” he said.

“However, the duty holder has appealed this notice to VCAT. “EPA will continue to work with council and others to ensure the duty holder acts to reduce the fire risk posed by the site.”

C&D Recycling lodged an application to VCAT to extend time frame for compliance to its permit in response to the City’s legal action.

Newtown Action Group’s Vicki Baensch welcomed Geelong council’s decision to apply a heritage overlay to parts of the suburb.

“It’s fantastic council are not only supporting a pocket of Newtown but the heritage and character of Geelong,” she said.

“It’s nice to know a community group can get involved and have an impact on the process.”

Geelong Council adopted a planning amendment at its latest meeting, which applied a heritage overlay to the Newtown West and Upper Skeene Street precincts, and other areas of the suburb.

Newtown Action Group first campaigned for heritage protection in 2014 when changes in State Government planning schemes led to a rezoning of part of the suburb. “(The City’s planning department was) perhaps not considering the reality of what was going on,” Ms Baensch said.

“There are some beautiful old homes that have been knocked down and some very modern homes that are not sympathetic to the character of that area.”

The group raised money and successfully campaigned to prevent zoning changes allowing four-storey housing.

“We appointed heritage architects to assess the area because we realised there was no heritage overlay,” Ms Baensch said.

Council’s recent introduction of a heritage overlay provided clear guidance to property owners looking to renovate, she said.

“The other main benefit of the heritage review is it goes a long way to eliminating poor outcomes.

“Don’t get me wrong, we’re not against new developments, but people buy into the area because they like its character.

“You see some fantastic renovations where the front of the property is old and the back of the property is modern - you can have the best of both worlds.”

A shortage of emergency carers threatens to leave vulnerable children in harm’s way this Christmas, a Geelong welfare agency has warned.

The shortage was the “biggest issue” facing the child protection team working for MacKillop Family Services, the team’s manager revealed.

“We just don’t have enough homes in the region for the numbers of young kids who need help in circumstances that are beyond their control,” Darren Rose said.

“They could have been removed from an abusive situation by child protection and are already traumatised because of what they’ve been through. The last thing we want to do is to make them even more stressed by sitting in a police station or office for hours while we try to find them a safe bed for the night.

“To make things worse, often the only home we can find is out of their region. The stress and trauma from a placement breakdown is significant enough without a child feeling further isolated by being taken away from everything that is routine and familiar to them.”

MacKillop’s after-hours team works 24 hours a day, 365 days fielding a year fielding calls from police and other child-protection bodies to find emergency placements for children and youths at risk of harm.

MacKillop said it was introducing a First Call Foster Care model to help find more carers.

The model's "standby approach" rostered new carers to ensure the availability of weekend home-based placements, the agency said.

Carers would be rostered for one week monthly, with financial compensation regardless of whether they accommodated any children.

“In addition, for each night that carers look after a child they will receive reimbursement per child,” MacKillop said.

Mr Rose called First Call Foster Care a “radical transformation”.

"This model will mean we have more home-based care emergency places for older children (because) currently most existing emergency care is only for babies."

Straight from the What Were They Thinking file comes the title of a new initiative to protect the endangered hooded plover.

Dogs’ Breakfast certainly seems an odd title for workshops on protecting a bird that locally loses more chicks to off-leash pets than just about anything else.

So, bad taste? Or just blasé on birdlife?

Well, it is a breakfast workshop and attendees are invited to bring their dogs, so perhaps host Great Ocean Road Coast Committee gets the benefit of the doubt.

And at least it will ruffle some feathers!

While on local authorities, what’s up with Barwon Water?

Last time Double Take checked it was still in the public service but recently it’s morphed into some kind of free-ranging commercial outfit.

Last week Barwon Water announced it had established a company to conduct maintenance services while also competing for business on other local projects. Won't the private-sector just love that!

Then this week it pulled on the white shoes with property development plans at trendy Torquay. The Salt estate, on a disused water basin, should be worth a cool $50 million, the authority salivated.

Given the history of governmental forays into business, Barwon Water’s owners - you know, the public - should closely monitor their return on investment.

Mind you, even skirting the edges of business can take significant bark off the bureaucracy.

Take City Hall, set to spend $17 million on buying two farms and turning them into swamps.

As readers verbalise WTF while spitting their Weeties, Double Take can explain that the purchase and, err, redevelopment of 500 hectares of farmland will generously alleviate drainage issues confronting Armstrong Creek developers.

Apparently council’s “wetlands” will provide a legal alternative to nasty stormwater running into nearby sites covered with an international agreement protecting the habitat of migratory wading birds. Lucky birds, luckier developers!

Double Take checked but couldn’t find anything about protecting ratepayers from City Hall.

East Geelong grandma Mary Wilson began the search for the Indy’s Talkin’ Turkeys the week she returned from caravanning in Queensland.

Fate smiled on Mary, who scoured the Indy for the fowl blighters after her grey nomad adventure with husband Garry.

“My God, I’ve actually won - that’s really nice,” the 66-year-old said when the Indy’s turkey correspondent phoned during her Christmas shopping.

“You’ve just made my life wonderful - or at least a bit easier.”

The win knocked the stuffing out of Mary, one of five lucky readers to win a turkey in last week's competition.

“We saw the Indy and I thought I’d enter it so it was meant to be."

Mary and her four grandchildren will gobble up the succulent turkey when her family visits for Christmas.

Then she and Garry will polish off any remnants with their friends the next day.

“You’re quite welcome to come to Anderson Street and share our turkey,” she told the Indy.

The hidden turkeys have had readers in a flap for four weeks but Mary spotted them with relative ease.

“It took me a little bit to get the fifth,” she admitted.

Last week’s turkeys were in the advertisements of Geelong Private Hospital, Scooters and Mobility, Mike Hanneysee Car Sales, Automaster Car Sales and Mega Toys.

Five more are hidden in separate ads for the final time this week. To go into the draw, entrants must supply their name and phone number along with the business names of the five advertisers with a hidden turkey each.

Anna Sharry, a Baptcare Personal Care Worker who helps older people in Geelong to live independently in their own homes, is particularly busy at this time of year.

Home care services to suit the season Anna says that her customers tend to require extra support during the summer holiday period. “It’s a hectic time of year for most families, which means that older people don’t necessarily have their usual level of family support.”

Respite care is an especially popular service in the summer months, Anna says. “It’s quite common for our customers to need some extra assistance while their family is away on holidays, or even just when their carer has a social commitment. Respite care is ideal in that situation, because it allows them to receive care in their home, whether it’s for a few hours or for longer periods, including overnight stays.”

Anna says that escorted transport is another useful service for older people at this time of

year. “Escorted transport involves more than just driving customers to their destination. I help them get ready, assist them to get in and out of the car safely, and make sure they’re safe and supported the whole time. It’s particularly helpful when people need to attend appointments, do some Christmas shopping, or go to family events independently.”

Some customers don’t realise that these kinds of services can be accessed through their Home Care Package, according to Anna. “There are many diferent types of support that we provide as part of our home care service. Sometimes people assume that it is limited to personal care, such as help with showering, or assistance with household duties. But it’s much broader than that.”

MP in call for holiday police

Record of goodwill Record gift donations are set to extend Christmas cheer among disadvantaged local families this year, according to a welfare agency.

Bethany’s Giving Tree Appeal was this week on the verge of smashing its record haul of 7300 gifts in 2017 with three days remaining, said chief executive officer Grant Boyd.

Appeal organisers had already counted more than 7000 donations “with more gifts arriving each day”, Mr Boyd said.

“Every day more donations are arriving by the carload, so we’re expecting to exceed the total number of gifts received last year by quite a margin.”

Mr Boyd was looking forward to the appeal brightening Christmas for more families than ever this year.

“While Christmas can be a time of joy and happiness, for many people across the greater Geelong area and south-west Victoria it can be a difficult and stressful period,” he said.

Geelong Harley Owners Group again made a major contribution to the appeal, with members delivering an estimated 1100 donations from their 25th annual Toy Run last Sunday.

Last year the appeal received an estimated 7300 gifts for local families in need, Bethany said.

Close to 100 businesses hosted the 2017 appeal’s giving trees, under which donors could place gifts for Bethany and other participating agencies to distribute among “local families doing it tough”.

The participating agencies are: Bethany Community Support; Bethany Kindergarten Services; SalvoConnect; The Sexual Assault and Family Violence Centre; GenU; Barwon Child, Youth and Family; Diversitat; Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative; and MacKillop Family Services.

at Bethany and that should not go unrecognised,” Mr Hyland said.

Bethany Community Services describes itself as an independent, not-for-profit organisation providing welfare throughout the Geelong region and parts of south-west Victoria.

Local MP Simon Ramsay has called for more police in Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula as coastal populations get set to swell with tourists over summer.

The Member for Western Victoria said the recent State Government allocation of 10 police to Geelong was not enough to deal with the “summer tourism onslaught”.

“A handful of police over numerous stations is barely recognisable to most people,” he said.

“The police are clearly stretched with the increasing daily workload - let alone the extra demands that summer brings to the region.”

In Parliament on Tuesday, Mr Ramsay urged Police Minister and Bellarine MP Lisa Neville to boost police resources immediately.

“What the region really needs is a significant boost to numbers, not a modicum handout,” he said.

But Ms Neville accused Mr Ramsay of fearmongering, citing this year’s overall crime decrease of 5.1 per cent in Geelong.

“Local communities remember only too well the contribution of his government during 2010 and 2014 - four consecutive years of crime increases, and police station closures across the Bellarine.”

The State Government had funded 25 additional police for Geelong during the past three years, she said.

“New police out of the additional 2729 will continue to be allocated to areas of greatest need which will include regional cities like Geelong.”

An additional 23 Police Custody Officers at Geelong Police Station this year had allowed local command to increase patrols in the city.

“In terms of the summer season, local police command is well prepared to keep the community and any visitors safe.”

New homes, land mag win A new local initiative for marketing home builders and land is getting results, according to advertisers.

Geelong Coast New Homes & Land launched just a few months ago, combining a free glossy tabloid-sized publication with a dedicated website.

Both platforms carry advertisements and editorial content promoting local builders and developers, offering a complete print and digital package free to readers.

Delivery of the second edition began last week, with the 20,000 copies covering Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast also reaching into western Melbourne.

The magazine is available free at hundreds of pick-up points, while the website operates without a paywall at newhomesland.gee-

Advertisers reported outstanding results from the first edition of Geelong Coast New Homes & Land.

“It had been really quiet but the first weekend after the magazine came out and the website launched we all of a sudden got eight sales leads,” said Enso Homes’ Leigh Selkrig.

“Three of them had downloaded our Eight Hidden Costs to Building E-book, which we promoted in the magazine, and five calls to the office had seen our ad.

“We also had a lot of other inquiries and website traffic, which we can assume was only due to Geelong Coast New Homes & Land.”

City 'to lead' in feared AI “World-leading” Geelong research will develop artificial intelligence systems amid fears the technology is a threat to humanity.

Deakin University announced this week that Geelong would co-host a $20 million Applied Intelligence Institute as part of Deakin’s efforts to “drive the digital frontier”.

The institute, A2I2, would work on AI systems and tools to “benefit industry and society by driving economic growth and job creation”, Deakin said.

A2I2 would become Australia’s “go-to institute for innovative AI research for government and industry”, Deakin vice-chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander said.

“Big data analysis is described as the ‘new oil’ for its ability to create innovative and valuable solutions to the challenges facing industry, government and communities, and artificial intelligence is key to unlocking big data’s full potential,” Prof den Hollander said.

“Deakin’s Applied Artificial Intelligence Institute will allow the university to leverage our existing strengths to support research and the practical application of AI, providing a range of transformational benefits in fields diverse as health, manufacturing, finance, and defence.

“Backed by Deakin’s proven strength in commercialising research and working in partnership with industry, A2I2 will support the development of innovative new products and human-in-the-loop solutions that create jobs and drive economic growth.”

The institute would be co-located at Deakin’s Melbourne and Geelong campuses, Prof den Hollander said.

The university’s existing Pattern Recognition and Data Analytics (PRaDA) Strategic Research Centre and Deakin Software and Technology Innovation Lab (DSTIL) would form “the core” of A2I2.

“This new Institute builds upon PRaDA and DSTIL’s successes, such as research into apply-

ing machine-learning to detect mental illness and the design of stronger and lighter aluminium alloys, exemplifying how Deakin is driving the digital frontier,” Prof den Hollander said.

“Research required for future advances in AI needs to be truly cross disciplinary, which is why A2I2 will bring together skills and strengths from across Deakin and cover all aspects of AI research and development from fundamental science to translation and commercialisation.”

An advisory board “featuring industry leaders” would oversee the institute, Deakin said.

Some of the world’s leading technology experts have issued numerous warnings in recent years about the threat of AI overtaking mankind.

Figures such as Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk have raised concerns ranging from the loss of human control over autonomous military weapons through to the hackers taking advantage of the technology.

AI “is the biggest threat we face as a civilisation”, Mr Musk has warned.

Mr Hawking has told the BBC that “the development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race”.

However, AI proponents have claimed it could be one of technology’s greatest benefits for mankind, solving problems and devising systems too complex for the human mind.

“I am really optimistic (about AI),“ Mr Zuckerberg told the Wall Street Journal in September.

“People who are naysayers and try to drum up these doomsday scenarios, I just, I don’t understand it. It’s really negative and in some ways I actually think it is pretty irresponsible.”

Water board a developer FESTIVE CHEER: The Itchy Feet Pep Band will play at Highton's Christmas carols this year.

Carols ring for thousands Thousands will gather at Highton Reserve for the suburb’s ninth Carols in the Park on Sunday.

Organiser Ken Hudson estimated a record 2500 people attended the carols last year.

“We give out one program per family - so we’re able to make an estimate from there,” he said.

The crowd had grown since 2009, when roughly 1200 people attended the inaugural event, he said.

“We generally get between 2000 and 2500.

“People like the convenience of the location - it’s a great venue - which the City of Greater Geelong generously lets us use.”

The carols will include the musical talents of children’s entertainers the Kazoos, the Itchy Feet Pep Band and Roslyn Primary School students.

“They are very excited to be a part of this

special event once again this year,” Ken said.

The Itchy Feet Pep band performed at halftime at Kardinia Park during the AFL season in August, when Geelong took on Richmond.

Singers and a musical ensemble from St John’s Church in Highton will lead the crowd in traditional carols in between the major acts.

Ken said the free, council-supported event aimed to give families a chance to enjoy the true meaning of the festive season.

“The goal of the event is to provide an enjoyable break from the commercial hurly burly of Christmas.”

Carols in the Park begins at Highton Reserve at 7pm on Sunday. Each family will receive a free flicker (battery) candle and each child a glow bracelet.

Local Lions Club members will run a sausage sizzle to raise money for disadvantaged people in Uganda.

Barwon Water has gone into property development with a “new standard” of residential estate at Torquay.

The water authority announced plans for the Salt estate on Wednesday, calling it “the region’s first 7.5-star residential development”.

Barwon Water unveiled Salt around a week after announcing it had gone into the maintenance business, establishing a company to provide in-house services while seeking “further opportunities” elsewhere.

The authority plans to develop Salt on the site of a disused water basin off Grossmans Road, west of Torquay College.

The “innovative, sustainable urban development” would put into practice Barwon Water’s zero-emissions targets and integrated water management systems, the authority said.

“By developing the site for sustainable housing, Barwon Water can reduce pressure on water bills and activate the otherwise dormant landholding.”

Salt would also “boost regional prosperity”, said Barwon Water managing director Tracey Slatter.

The estate would “target” local contractors while stimulating more than $50 million of development, she said.

“Transforming the former basin site into a showcase of innovative urban development is a win-win for sustainability and customer prices.

“The estate has been carefully designed to deliver key outcomes for the community, including connection to quality local recreational facilities, improved well-being opportunities, a

light environmental footprint and low living costs while delivering a high standard of living.

“We are incredibly proud of our plans for the site. This estate really sees us walk the talk in terms of living our goals of zero emissions, zero waste and delivering customer and community value.”

Barwon Water said the estate would include “eco-features” such as household battery storage and a 250kW solar array on the authority’s land opposite the estate.

Renewable power would cover “most of the estate’s total energy demand”, Barwon Water said.

Each home would also have electric carcharging points and harvest rain to achieve a “minimum” 7.5-star energy rating.

Smart water meters using “Internet of Things technology” would be integrated as well, the authority said.

“Integrated water-cycle management has been incorporated in the design of the estate, with swales, a raingarden, integrated landscaping and a nature playground as part of the stormwater retention system.”

Animal cruelty guilty plea

By Luke Voogt A Geelong microbiologist kept 260 animals including two freshwater crocodiles in cruel conditions, a court has found.

Wildlife officers found the animals, including frogs, snakes and lizards, at a Highton property in July 2016, the court heard.

Police called the officers after discovering the collection during a call out, according to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s (DELWP) Mark Breguet.

“Almost half of the animals at the address were in poor condition or deceased,” Mr Breguet said.

“Zoos Victoria veterinary staff attended the address and assessed all live animals.

“While some of the seized animals were rehabilitated by specialist reptile vets and rehoused by DELWP, many did not respond to treatment and have since died.”

Doctor Hazizul Hussain-Yusuf pleaded guilty in Geelong Magistrates’ Court on Monday to cruelty, aggravated cruelty, unlawful possession of wildlife, failing to notify a change of address and failing to keep accurate records.

Hussain-Yusuf initially faced 154 animal cruelty related charges but the court consolidated them to five.

The court found he failed to provide adequate food, water and shelter for the large collection of wildlife.

The magistrate convicted Hussain-Yusuf, fining him $5000 plus costs of $15,095.67 and banning him from owning protected wildlife for five years.

DELWP regulates wildlife licensing in Victo-

ria, including licences to keep and trade captive-bred native wildlife.

Mr Breguet said while the Private Wildlife Licence allowed large collections of animals, owners must abide by strict conditions.

“Despite holding a DELWP wildlife licence at the time, the owner failed to meet the Code of Practice, which is in place to protect the welfare of animals.

“With the privilege of keeping wildlife comes the responsibility for the animal’s health and welfare.”

Mr Breguet urged the public to report any suspected cases of wildlife cruelty and other related offences to the department.

The department would treat the anonymous reports as confidential, he said.

“This result sends a strong message to the

community that serious penalties apply to licence holders who fail to provide adequate food, water and shelter for wildlife in their care.”

Hussain-Yusuf worked at a private research laboratory within the Geelong hospital and was a registered reptile collector.

He completed a PhD in Microbiology at the University of Kogoshima in Japan.

LETTERS Andy’s track trek a life-changer I pay tribute to Leading Senior Constable Andy Brittain for his selfless commitment to improving the lives of disadvantaged Geelong youths.

I first met Andy earlier this year at an Anzac Day service. With him were 14 disadvantaged young people who were preparing to walk the Kokoda Track.

Andy’s infectious passion for helping underprivileged and disengaged youth in Geelong led to the Geelong Kokoda Youth Program’s establishment in 2013.

The program has evolved into an incredibly successful initiative, encouraging disengaged youth to develop a connection with their local community. Many of these kids come from disadvantaged backgrounds and are grappling with mental health issues and feelings of isolation.

This life-changing experience the Geelong Kokoda Youth Program offers is due in no small part to Leading Senior Constable Andy Brittain.

It is no surprise he received the 2017 Blue Ribbon Foundation Policeman of the Year award.

Over the last five years the program has seen nearly 50 young people from the Geelong region participate in the Kokoda program. The 10-night, 11-day trek, following 20 weeks of personal training, teaches kids resilience and provides them with a platform to make sound decisions.

Last week I attended a Victoria Police breakfast that showcased the impact of the Kokoda experience. Each participant told their own story about how the program changed their lives and helped them re-engage with school, employment, family and community.

I wish Andy, and everyone involved continuing success for the Geelong Kokoda Youth Program.

Take a Gamble on humanity When reading letters to the editor in local papers I normally glance down to check the author’s name so as not to waste my time with Michael J Gamble’s drivel, but I made the mistake of reading his letter headlined ’Australians come first’ in last week’s Geelong Indy.

I was appalled. How dare he say “I could not give a continental” and “who cares?” when referring to men, women and children who have come from countries where people are tortured, raped, beaten and killed; people risking their lives for a better existence?

Michael J Gamble should just think how lucky he is to be geographically privileged.

Instead of sitting in his ivory tower at Belmont and spending his days trying to get his name in every paper possible, Mr Gamble should get out there and help the community, volunteer, show some compassion and contribute to safely ensuring the future of all humanity.

The nuclear family and God’s word, the Bible, was the cornerstone of Western civilisation, like it or not.

We turn our backs on these God-given influences at our national peril!

And now for no-court divorce The recent passing of laws about same sex-marriage may have unintended consequences.

It is not well-known that the marriage contract is a contract between the spouses, but what is not known generally is that the spouses also become in contract with the Federal Government.

This is what makes it a legal contract, and is why marriage is legally recognised. This is all well and good, except for the fact that, should the government change the Marriage Act in any way, as it proposes to do now, then all marriage contracts become null and void.

Because married couples are in a contractual arrangement that includes the government it is required that couples seeking a divorce necessarily go to the Family Court for adjudication.

If it is the case that the Marriage Act is changed, then there is no longer a legal imperative for divorcing couples to go to the Family Court, making it redundant.

Given that Family Court procedures are a goldmine for lawyers, divorcing couples might see that the cheaper alternative could be avoiding the court and settle it themselves, saving a heap.

It also seems that gay couples, who are often well-moneyed, might heed the fact that any marriage break-up will have to be conducted in the Family Court, possibly lightening their sometimes-bulging coffers considerably.

Watch for signs of trouble As 2017 comes to an end, it’s a great time to reflect and express our gratitude for all the things that happened this year.

But some people might find the festive season difficult, particularly those experiencing isolation, loneliness or mental health issues.

Keep striding against stroke On behalf of local stroke survivors and the Stroke Foundation, I thank members of the community who got motivated and moving by taking part in Stride4stroke throughout November.

Not only did almost 650 participants lower their own stroke risk by taking on their own physical challenge, they raised vital funds for StrokeLine, 1800 787 653, Australia’s only dedicated national helpline for stroke survivors and their families.

I am excited to announce that with your support, we collectively clocked up more than 47,000 kilometres and raised almost $140,000 for StrokeLine. These donations will enable Stroke Foundation to continue to provide this vital telephone support service when it is needed most.

Throughout November I was thrilled to hear about the efforts of our ‘Striders’ right across the country. They walked, ran, swam and even lifted weights to raise awareness of stroke.

Sadly, there will be 56,000 strokes in Australia this year. That’s one every nine minutes.

But stroke’s impact doesn’t need to be this great. Around 80 per cent of strokes are preventable.

We must turn the situation around for the better. We must work together to prevent, treat and beat stroke.

Looking after our own health is the first step.

Physical inactivity is now the second highest risk factor behind high blood pressure, so follow the lead of our Striders and get moving.

Dispatchable facts Derek Lipka’s denigration of coal as not producing dispatchable power unwittingly explained why our power grids are losing reliability.

There’s no shortage of online information on the subject but Calgary University’s energyeducation.ca makes it clear that “most conventional power sources such as coal or natural gas power plants are dispatchable in order to meet the always changing electricity needs of the population".

Coal and gas can do this because, having baseload capacity, they are meant to be operating continuously. Each plant would normally have several generators, any of which could be shut down for maintenance or repair while the others maintained production. The website explains that the speed of restoration, in the event of shutdown, varies from fast (in seconds), medium (minutes), and slow (hours).

Yes, coal is slower than hydro or gas. But this didn’t matter before renewables - the intermittent non-dispatchables - were forced onto the grid, requiring baseload dispatchables to run part-time to make up for the intermittency of green power. So Hazelwood shut down because it was prevented from doing the dispatchable job it was built for, as well as being faced with the additional burdens placed on it by the Victorian Government, including yet more renewables.

Cold facts on warming A couple of weeks ago in the Indy Derek Lipka said “the planet is warming” and “quite quickly compared to previous warming periods”, so man-made global warming must be true.

However, dozens of scientific studies around the globe show the planet has gone through regular warming and cooling cycles, many of which were hotter than our present cycle.

All the warm periods over the past 3000 years began without the help of CO2. Our current heating cycle started slowly somewhere around 1700 and has continued heating sporadically until recently. It plateaued for 15 years before the El Nino of 2015 kicked in and spiked sharply upwards. However the spike has now reversed and temperatures are heading down again.

So the current warming cycle was well underway before CO2 could have had the slightest influence.

The holy church of catastrophic warmism , the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, stated in one of its reports that CO2 could only have had a significant effect on global warming since 1950 but nearly half of the temperature increase that’s occurred since 1700 occurred before 1950!

Also, Mr Lipka wrote last week that coal generators are not “dispatchable” because they have slow response times but he’s wrong. Speed of response is irrelevant in determining whether a generator is “dispatchable”.

I advise him to do more research.

She will celebrate the milestone in style this Christmas Eve, when the carols move to Kardinia Park for the first time in their 52-year history.

“We’re moving up, bigger and better,” she said.

Works at Johnstone Park forced organisers to relocate the event from its traditional home.

But the move to the Cats' home ground could see thousands more people turn up, according to organisers.

“It would be nice to attract a lot more people than we have at Johnstone Park,” Shandelle said.

“There’s a much bigger space available to an audience. I don’t know if we’ll fill the stadium - that will be nice though.”

Shandelle has performed at the carols since she won the Highton Rotary Star Search in 1993.

This year’s vocal champion, Rosey Wilkens, will continue the 40-year tradition of winners performing by joining Shandelle on stage.

The Geelong High student won the competition’s vocal category in May. Shandelle, who teaches singing as well as performing and working as a personal trainer, hoped to mentor some of the carols’ young singers.

“It’s a prestigious event for them to appear at,” she said. “There’s always a chance for me to help those artists along.”

“We’ve got such a good line-up this year,” Shandelle said.

“It’s nice to bring some new talent for people to hear - it’s a great little arts community we’ve got here.

Known on-stage as Janeva, the 21-year-old has performed at a handful of major festivals across Australia.

“She’s writing her own music too,” Shandelle said.

About 70 singers from three different choirs

will lead the crowd in traditional sing-along carols, she said.

“Being at the stadium, it might have been an attractive thing for them to get involved.”

This year may be might be the first time the carols have moved to Kardinia Park, but it’s not the first time at the stadium for Shandelle.

She performed there earlier this year during an AFL match.

“Apparently I only play stadiums now,” she joked on Monday. “I’ve got a gig there tonight.”

She also recorded a Christmas album re-

cently, in time for the event.

“We’ll be selling it there,” she said. “Hopefully people will use it as a stocking-filler.”

Long-serving carols organiser Noel Hooper expected a bigger crowd this year, thanks to the appeal of the stadium.

Hooper considered the arrangement “a boost for the community”.

“With this year’s carols being held in such an iconic and accessible venue, we hope to get an extra 2000 to 3000 more people come along,” he said.

Crowd goes wild for Jade

“He said ‘Now put them on son’,” Hurley said. “I had mittens on before Michael Jackson.” Hurley released his new album Naked this year, which includes a cover of I Don’t Look Good Naked Anymore, along with a

raunchy video clip.

“People will either be horrified or amused I don’t know which,” he said.

He will play his old hits and a variety of covers at The Sphinx from 8.30pm on Friday, 15 December, after selling out an 11am show.

“You just don’t hear entertainers sing those

songs anymore,” he said.

“That’s the reason they want two shows this year.”

He planned to mingle with the crowd after the show.

“You’ve got to give people your time. They pay decent money to come see your show.”

Jade Hurley’s current audience might not be the screaming fangirls he played to in the ’60s, but they still get a little wild.

“I had a lovely pink G-string thrown at me on stage when I was in Ballina (north NSW) last week,” he said.

“It comes with the territory, mate. Tom Jones eat your heart out.”

Hurley spoke to the Indy on the road in his motorhome fresh off a show in Caloundra, Queensland.

“They were hanging from the rafters,” he said.

He has toured Australia in the motorhome with his piano for the last decade.

“There’s no better way of doing it,” he said.

“I’m one of the only acts in Australia that tours in a motorhome.”

Hurley turned 74 recently, but that failed to stop him “throwing the old leg up on the foot pedals” and giving each show his all.

“It’s called adrenaline,” he said. “Everything is wet down to my underpants and socks at the end of each show.”

And giving “110 per cent onstage” was drawing good crowds, he said.

“It’s not just the oldies that it used to be for years - which is quite flattering actually.

“There’s a lot of people who have grown up listening to their mums and dads’ Jade Hurley albums, and a lot of them are bringing their kids to the show too.”

Hurley developed his on-stage work ethic playing alongside music legends Johnny O’Keefe and Johnny Cash in the ’60s.

He made his TV debut aged 14 on ABC’s Six O’Clock Rock alongside O’Keefe, who gave him the green gloves that inspired his nickname Jade.

The gearshift is light (but not too light) and works slickly. Rev matching on downchanges?

Yuk! If you don’t know how to heel-toe you should not be in the driver’s seat of a Nismo.

Front and rear suspension have increased spring, dampening and stabiliser rates.

A strut tower bar brace gives the suspension a stiffer platform on which to work. So the Nismo grips the road with plenty of determination. It has nice chassis balance and responds well to the slightest input of the throttle and wheel.

Steering feel is excellent, though some may find it rather heavy, particularly at lower speeds.

The big Nismo has a harsh-ish ride of uneven surfaces and there’s quite a bit of road-roar on coarse-chip roads. Sound like criticism? It’s not, we really like the raw nature of the big Nissan. This is not grand tourer, it’s the real deal.

Nismo sports brakes with 14-inch front and 13.8-inch rear vented rotors, with four-piston front and two-piston rear aluminium callipers haul off speed hard. Exactly what you need if you’re tempted into track days.

We love the old fashioned sound and feel of the Nissan 370Z Nismo and suggest anyone who is halfway interested gets down to their favourite dealer to sample sports motoring at a budget price.

By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Nissan’s 370Z sportscar is getting on in years but still looks the part and is bargain priced.

Indeed it recommended retail price has been coming down to compensate for the years going up. For a little over $50,000 on the road it gives you a blast into the past that’s most enjoyable.

Now another, pretty special version of the 370Z is on sale, one from the Nissan Motorsports and tuning division Nismo. The 370Z Nismo features added power, sports suspension, wider tyres, bigger brakes, a hot body kit and a Recaro trimmed interior.

You still get excellent value from this special model, just $61,490 for the six-speed manual we tested, or $63,990 for the seven-speed automatic we (thankfully) didn’t test.

Though the regular Nissan 370Z is sold as a coupe or roadster the Nismo only comes with the closed body as it’s the lighter of the two.

The front and rear have been reworked, including a great looking rear wing. Plenty of red highlights have been added to the lower areas.

Classy 19-inch alloys are part of the packaged, with the Nismo brakes clearly visible inside them.

The cabin has a pair of red and black Recaros covered in cloth that support well and really do give the feeling you deserve in any ‘proper’ sports machine. There are some little red touches here too, in particular the red ‘O’ at the end of the Nismo badge on the tacho.

The dash area is virtually unchanged, but we have loved the three central dial layout since way back when we first drove a 240Z and they still look great today.

The guys at Nismo revised the standard 3.7-litre V6 engine by fitting a dual sports exhaust system which reduces back pressure by up to 30 per cent. That, and retuning the engine control module, added an extra eight kW of power and eight Nm of torque.

Outputs are 253 kW (350 horsepower in sportscar numbers) at deliciously high revs of 7400. And a 374 Nm at 5200 rpm.

The first thing you notice is the improved engine note. The snap and snarl of the engine when it’s worked hard is delightful. There’s no turbo to delay air intake so acceleration is virtually instantaneous. The harder you go the

Cats slip from top eight after one-day LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club has slipped out of the top eight after going down to Fitzroy Doncaster last weekend, in a one-day game following the previous week washout.

The Cats batted first and started brightly, Tim Ludeman making a brisk 52 from 67 balls, while skipper Eamonn Vines continued his incredible form, top scoring with 62. Brenton McDonald (25) and Dom McGlinchey (21) finished off the innings well, seeing the side to a competitive 7/201.

In reply, the Geelong bowling attack struggled to find real penetration, and - despite a tidy 2/30 from 10 overs by Luke Muller - the team was unable to defend their target.

The next two weekends, weather permitting, will finally see the first red ball game of the season, as Geelong host the Monash Tigers, who sit just below them on the l adder. Both sides will know a win heading into the Christmas break will be crucial to their finals chances, and a tight struggle should ensue.

The Geelong Cricket Association has one remaining game before the Christmas break, with a two day game scheduled over the next two Saturdays.

In Division One, a mouth watering top of the table clash between North Geelong and East Belmont is set to be played at Osborne

Park, with both sides in amazing form.

The Magpies have taken all before them so far this season, and are yet to lose a game thanks to their bevy of stars. With the likes of Andrew Fergusson and Damien Vassilou racking up some big scores, while their bowling attack, led by coach Nathan Fitzgerald, Tom Mathieson and Shaun Kingwell has not put a foot wrong.

East Belmont though have been equally as impressive. Despite dropping one game to Lara, their form has been impeccable, and they will be setting themselves to make a statement here.

The form of opening batsmen Sean O’Neill has been incredible, with two centuries and a 97 to his name already. Add to that the return to form of Matthew Lineker last week, and the Lions batting order looks primed to make a big score. Their bowling though may be slightly underdone, David Lineen returned from injury last week, and will definitely be the better for the run, while fast bowler Alex Willerton is making slow and steady progress from a side strain.

This will be a top class game of local cricket, but with the Magpies bowling stocks looking slightly fitter, they deserve to start to very narrow favourites.

South Barwon v GEELONG CITY, GROVEDALE v St Joseph's, LAA v Murgheboluc, NORTH GEELONG v East Belmont, Newtown and Chilwell v LEOPOLD.

In division two, the top four is starting to break away from the bottom four, and with St Peter's precariously placed in fifth spot on the ladder, their game against bottom placed Newcomb and District is one they simply must win if they are to stay in touch.

The Saints' form has been patchy, although a win against Manifold Heights last round ensured they kept their finals hopes alive.

Stephen Illingworth continues to defy Father Time, the star all-rounder taking 3/19 as the Saints restricted the Sharks to just 159, before backing up with 61 not out as he led his side to a dominant eight-wicket win.

Newcomb and District has struggled so far this season, but a win isn’t far away, meaning St Peter's will need to be at their best here.

And in division three, St Albans Breakwater, which currently sits in fourth position, has a massive chance to consolidate a finals spot when it plays fifth-placed Alexander Thomson.

Skis and iron a hot mix at senior surf comp Up to 40 Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club competitors participated in this summer’s first Life Saving Victoria surf senior carnival at Torquay surf beach on 9 December.

Ocean Grove SLSC competition manager Bruce Sampson said his club competed well across the ski events and iron races at the state-based surf carnival.

Sampson confirmed 38 Ocean Grove SLSC senior competitors competed at the opening senior carnival for 2017-'18.

“The skis were probably our strongest - skis and irons were our biggest events,” Sampson said.

“It is has been a good hit-out, the kids enjoyed themselves.”

Clubs from all over Victoria were at the competition, including Ocean Grove, Anglesea, Jan Juc and Torquay.

The next senior surf carnival will take place at Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club on Sunday 7 January.

Spoiled for fish choice ON THE BITE Chris Pitman The biggest challenge for anglers last week was deciding what to chase, with so many species on the chew.

Corio Bay provided sheltered waters and fantastic fishing for pike, Australian salmon, pinkie snapper, flathead and garfish. Soft plastics cast along structures in deeper water caught most of the species mentioned above.

Trelly’s Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt snagged a mixed bag while working plastics from a boat around the waterfront on Monday morning. Adam said bump lures along the bottom were essential.

Anglers fishing off Clifton Springs caught whiting and pinkies along the Curlewis Bank, with tenderised squid a standout bait.

Salmon sometimes erupted on the surface of the bay in feeding frenzies.

Trolling or casting lures would have done the trick.

Alcoa Pier area was worth fishing for pike and pinkies in great numbers. Monster pike over 80cm snapped up Daiwa Double Clutch 95 lures.

The snapper catches slowed a little at Clifton Springs, with anglers making daybreak starts reporting the best success on snapper to 8kg.

Last week’s easterly winds did nothing to slow the fishing off St Leonard’s.

Daniel Baden and I fished the south end of the Bourke Street area on Saturday, catching a bag-limit of whiting to more than 40cm on pippie and tenderised squid on the last of the run-in tide.

Sam Pitman took a run out from St Leonard’s on Sunday afternoon, quickly boating 10 nice-sized squid. Sam’s squid jig of choice was a Yamashita size three.

Trelly’s Geelong’s Peri Stavropoulos also wanted to get among the whiting action off St Leonards. On Tuesday night he managed a nice bag of fish, again some thumpers over 40cm.

Good water clarity made for excellent land-based squid action from Queenscliff Pier right around to the bight.

Large 3.5 sized jigs cast out some distance worked a treat.

The Rip was a hot spot for salmon, with large schools of fish busting up on the surface.

Anglers who chased snapper off Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads boated reasonable numbers of fish in 30m to 40m. Fresh baits such as salmon or squid did the job, with a few gummy sharks taken as a bycatch.

Last week the Victorian Fisheries Authority placed a fish attracting device (FAD) out from Torquay, which is fantastic news for increased captures of species like kingfish.

Freshwater anglers caught trophy brown trout over 4kgs again at Lake Purrumbete. Trolling Tassie Devils worked well, although bait fishing with mudeye under a float also caught fish.

Large carp entertained anglers on the Barwon River in Geelong between Breakwater and Queen’s Park.

Next week should offer good fishing for whiting at St Leonards of for snapper and gummies offshore. Freshwater anglers could try trolling the east bank at Lake Purrumbete for big brown trout.
