The team at the Big Picture People Fountain Gate has created a range of home cinema packages that take the confusion and stress out of choosing the right system. More than 20 Home Theatre Packages are on display ranging from $6000 to $90,000 fully installed. “People can come in and experience dif-
ferent packages and price ranges,” Mr Golod explained. “In consultation with the customer we can design a package with the best possible components to suit their budget and room sizes.” Packages typically include home theatre projectors, screens, speakers, amplifiers, Bluray players, screens and set top boxes. The Big Picture People can also supply theatre furniture, acoustic panelling, star ceilings, multi room audio and video distribution,

Casey Cardinia Libraries has erected Forgiving Trees at all its branches in the lead up to Christmas. Holt MP Anthony Byrne visited the new Bunjil Place library to lend his support to the campaign. Casey Cardinia Libraries CEO Chris Buckingham said people were welcome to contribute items of food or unwrapped gifts for people in need of support. A branch of hope for kids at Christmas Give a gift of hope this Christmas at Casey Central Shopping Centre. The centre has erected a tree of hope under which shoppers can leave a gift for underpriviledged children. Gifts will be distributed by Backpacks 4 Vic Kids and will go to children who will spend this Christmas in foster care. Backpacks 4 Vic Kids is a non-profit organisation based in Cranbourne which provides backpacks filled with essential personal care and comfort items to support kids placed in foster care. Often children are placed quickly into foster care without much more than what they are wearing at the time. Backpacks 4 Vic Kids strives to provide them with a few essential items to help with the transition. Donations can include toiletries, clothing, sleepwear, a torch, blanket and a toy or activity which will belong to the child, and will stay with them should they be relocated. With less than two weeks until Christmas, Australia Post will keep post office doors open longer as it moves into its busiest period of the year. Residents in Narre Warren can visit their local post office during the extended retail hours of 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday and 9am - 2pm Saturday until 22 December. Victoria State Manager David Allen said the extended trading hours would provide customers with more choice and convenience to send and receive their Christmas gifts in time for the big day. “We know people are busy at this time of year, so we’re giving our customers more options to prepare for the festive season,” Mr Allen said. “We predict this Christmas will be our busiest yet. Last year we delivered more than 34 million parcels over the Christmas period, a
record we expect to break this year. “We’re also making it easier for our customers to choose how their items are delivered. “We’ve introduced an SMS notification service for parcel deliveries. “On the morning of delivery, customers will receive a text message with the option of having the driver leave the parcel at a safe location at their home, confirm they will be home or deliver directly to a post office if no-one is home. “Customers can also take advantage of our parcel delivery services by opting to have their parcels sent to any one of our free 24/7 parcel lockers to a post office of their choice, or to a PO Box.” Extended trading will continue until Friday 22 December. Vandersteen said. Only Cr Rowe’s statement touched on Cr Aziz’s stressed mental state. Cr Aziz’s lawyer said the other colleagues stuck to listing Cr Aziz’s community achievements, possibly “terrified” of being seen to be condoning the offence. Cr Aziz was placed on a 12-month goodbehaviour bond with a condition that he continued psychological treatment.

After the hearing Cr Aziz spoke of battling depression and anxiety as a result of carrying out a high-pressure job. He said the public playing-out of the case was the price of holding a job in “high office”. “It’s been a rather stressful and difficult situation. “Had this been someone else other than me, people wouldn’t have heard boo (about this case).”

Casey’s three-time mayor Sam Aziz has been spared conviction after pleading guilty to two charges of breaching an intervention order. Cr Aziz faced being sacked as a Casey councillor if he was convicted at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court sentencing hearing on 13 December. It was the third time that Cr Aziz had faced similar intervention order-related charges. The first case was dismissed, and now the second and third cases have resulted in no conviction. In this case, Cr Aziz had breached orders by sending text messages to a protected person in May and August. The first had been described by his own lawyer in a previous hearing as “somewhat of a rant”. Before the hearing, Cr Aziz dropped plans to plead not guilty on the grounds of mental impairment. His lawyer argued that Cr Aziz was “distraught” at the time of the first breach, noting he was unable to be interviewed by police at the time due to his mental distress. “It was more like a welfare check,” the lawyer said. After the second breach, Cr Aziz allegedly told police he thought the text’s contents complied with the order. The mayor apologised to police, telling them he wished he had read the order in full, the court heard. If he had, he wouldn’t have sent the text, he allegedly told the police. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he didn’t accept a psychologist’s letter claiming Cr Aziz had reacted “unconsciously” and “emotionally” to a text message during the first breach. “(The psychologist) is almost condoning behaviour we’re seeking to make people accountable for.” In sparing conviction, Mr Vandersteen said he rated Cr Aziz as a very low risk of reoffending, in part due to the councillor’s public profile and the media attention in the case. Because a $500 fine for barkers’ eggs in this under-privileged area is just not on - and $200 for the heinous offence of not having a poo-bag is not much better. Would the council seriously levy such a hard-hitting fine against a child? A grandma? A young mum? Because rumour has it the actual offenders won’t be paying. No wonder when the news “dropped“, it caused a media sensation without limits. Rest assured, poo-ing puppies must be punished. And everyone needs to understand the need to meet the social responsibility of policing Fido’s faeces. But the old fine - of $200 - was far more appropriate, and just needed to be enforced. And for lacking a poo-bag? Let’s bring that back to $50 to $100. So for a struggling family in Casey, just how much money is $500? Well, it’s damn near a car registration payment, a month’s fuel for the family vehicle, Christmas bikes for a couple of kids - or about a third of the average ratepayer’s Casey rates bill. And, by any standards, that’s too much. Draconian penalties never meet with public approval, and make those attempting to enforce them a laughing stock. Casey needs, as a matter of urgency, for a councillor to stand up and move the reversal of the proposed fine, as not in keeping with community standards. Is there such a champion of the people sitting in the chamber, and willing to do their duty? If not, come election time, then a few may find themselves well and truly in the poo. - Jason Beck

East paying for the west By Brendan Rees Liberal candidate for Cranbourne, Ann-Marie Hermans says there will be nothing fair about slugging motorists from Cranbourne with up to 12 years of extra tolls to pay for a road set to be built in the west - that they “may never use.” After two years of planning, and wide community consultation, work is set to begin on the West Gate Tunnel Project . Under the plan, tolls on CityLink would be extended for 12 years to help fund the project. “Give us a fair go, Daniel Andrews ... the people of Cranbourne may never use the City Link extension. Why should we pay tolls on our roads to fund it? It’s the old 'rob Peter to pay Paul’ idea,” Ms Hermans said. She said with rising costs of living, families struggling to make ends meet, and more than
70 per cent of locals travelling out of Cranbourne to get to work, the last thing they needed was to pay $12 billion for the next 12 years. “This is just another example of how Daniel Andrews’ Labor Government makes life difficult for the Aussie battlers.“ “Labor pretends to be for the common people. This is proof they don’t care about our struggles in Cranbourne and the surrounding areas," Ms Hermans said. The project, a partnership between CityLink’s owner Transurban and the Victorian Government, has been announced to transform the way people and goods travel around Melbourne. Combined with the Monash Freeway Upgrade, it would provide network improvements from Pakenham to Geelong. Leader of the Opposition, Matthew Guy
said the Coalition would seek to block the Andrews Labor Government proposal to amend the City Link Concession Deed to extend tolls in order to fund the project. “Daniel Andrews likes to talk a lot about fairness, but there’s nothing fair about making motorists in the north, east and south-east pay tolls for an extra 12 years to fund a road that they will never use.” Shadow Treasurer, Michael O’Brien said Victorians were already facing skyrocketing power prices and cost of living under Daniel Andrews, adding “the last thing they need is a $12 billion toll hit.” Shadow Minister for Roads and Infrastructure, David Hodgett said motorists in Cranbourne would be right to ask why it was fair to pay $12 billion in tolls for a road they might never use.
Defending the project as “desperately needed” Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan said the West Gate Tunnel would reduce Melbourne’s reliance on the West Gate Bridge and ease congestion all the way along the Monash Freeway corridor from Pakenham to Geelong. “Let me be very clear, we’re all currently paying for four years of inaction, hare-brained schemes and empty talk the last time Matthew Guy and his hopeless cronies were in power,” he said. “Currently when the West Gate Bridge stops, the traffic impacts are felt all the way along the Monash.” “Matthew Guy wants to side with the Greens to block the fairer deal we’ve negotiated to build this desperately needed project - foisting the cost onto every Victorian taxpayer.”

Statue stolen By Brendan Rees A Hampton Park woman is pleading for thieves to return a beloved statue allegedly stolen from her front yard. The 60-80cm tall statue of an Aboriginal man playing a didgeridoo was the centrepiece of Zoe Field’s Kirkwood Crescent front garden. Zoe said the concrete statute stood proudly in her garden for the past 19 years and had sentimental value. “I was devastated because it came from my Opa. It was given to us by him before he passed away.” “To have found out that it is gone is literally devastating,” she said. It was allegedly stolen on Wednesday 6 December between 9.30am and 11am. Zoe said the statue, which weighed about 50 kilograms, was concreted to the ground. “They must’ve used a shovel or something to dig it out. Dog walkers face being slugged a hefty $500 fine if they don’t scoop their pet’s poop, under a tough new law in the City of Casey. The crackdown would also see owners hit with a $200 fine if they don’t have a poop-bag on hand. Ben Smith, of Cranbourne East who walks his dog regularly at Casey Fields, said the fines were important but “excessive.” “What message does it send when speeding fines cost less? It’s a bit steep,” he said. The $500 fine is higher than if a motorist was caught speeding between 25-29 km/h over the limit ($436) or driving while using a mobile phone ($476). Mr Smith said he would “definitely learn” his lesson even if he was slapped with a $100 fine. “Rather than increasing the fines as a scare tactic they should start enforcing it more often at a lower fee.” He questioned the council’s motive, adding “no-one seems to care” about cats roaming free. “Cats are responsible too. Why target dog owners?” For the record, council’s fine for failing to secure an animal is only $300. Cranbourne Dog Club’s Cindy McConville said while she agreed people should be penalised, the fine was “extreme” and “too hard to police.” “It is over the top considering Casey is a dog area.” She said council would be better off installing more bins and bag dispensers around parks. “You would think every park should have a bin, but you don’t actually see many of them.” “Sometimes you can also go to a bin and that’s chockers and hasn’t been emptied.” “If a little country town in the middle of nowhere can supply that, I can’t see why Casey couldn’t,” she said. Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett said the fine was in response to “strong community feedback.” “People are fed up with pet owners not tak-

Rail upgrades set Buses will also replace trains between Caulfield and Dandenong from Wednesday 10 to Wednesday 17 January, and again between Westall and Dandenong for two weeks during February. Those travelling to the city on affected lines during these works should allow an extra 40 to 75 minutes. V/Line services will also be affected. By the end of next year, all nine level crossings between Caulfield and Dandenong will be gone and the first HCMT will have arrived and be in testing ahead of its introduction to the network in early 2019.

A power, signalling and communications upgrade to prepare for high capacity metro trains (HCMT) will close sections of the Frankston and Cranbourne/Pakenham lines during January. Work on removing level crossings will also take place. Power will be switched off and buses will replace trains from Tuesday 2 to Tuesday 9 January between Flinders Street and Westall Railway Station on the Cranbourne/Pakenham line, and Flinders Street and Moorabbin on the Frankston line.

Cranbourne Police are investigating an incident in which a man’s wallet, containing personal cards and cash, was allegedly stolen from his vehicle. The victim’s bank cards were then used at a number of stores in Narre Warren. The victim’s vehicle was parked near a car wash at a shopping centre in Cranbourne on 11 May. The rushed decision by six out of 10 councillors to send Cr Wayne Smith to Arizona to gain information about the ‘Phoenix Light and Lantern Festival’ makes a mockery of the council’s supposed commitment to accountability and transparency. The trip was not mentioned in the council meeting agenda, nor was it recommended in the council officer’s written report on the proposed Casey Lantern Festival. The cost of the trip will be taken from the Council’s ‘China Project operational funding allocation’ and yet, no such funding allocation was ever mentioned in the council’s public budget documents for this financial year. We also have a situation where a new overseas trip is being planned, when the final costing of the previous council-funded overseas trip in April of this year has not yet been verified on the council website ‘Register of Overseas and Interstate Travel’. Well done to those four councillors (Cr Crestani, Cr Serey, Cr Flannery, Cr Gilic) who voted against this current trip. The council is already planning a business case for the Lantern Festival and until this business case is published and scrutinised, it

Indecent proposal Dear Crs Smith and Rosario, As the owners of a property in Shrives Road, Hampton Park we received a letter advising of the Pound and Shrives Roads Residential Area Development Proposal, and notice of an information session, on 11 December. We are obviously affected by the proposed plan. We are absolutely astounded that this proposal has been put forward at this time of the year. As you are no doubt aware, the proposal has been discussed with council officers over a long time. We were given a draft map of the plan some two years ago by a developer who was negotiating with us to purchase our land. After agreement was close to being reached, this draft plan was the catalyst that caused the developer to withdraw his offer. We understand the developer got the map from a council officer, but cannot state this as fact. However, this indicates to us that the proposal is not recent. The timing of submission regarding the proposal is questionable. We note that the public meeting is one week before Christmas.

It also covers the normal legal holiday period when many professional offices are closed, except for emergency-type situations. This proposal certainly does not fall into this category. Is this a deliberate ploy to allow the proposal to proceed without meaningful scrutiny? Or is it just incompetence on the part of council to deny meaningful scrutiny? Whatever the reason, the process has been unfortunate. It is noted that the proposal covers some 194 pages of data and information. Some of the information is of a technical nature, and requires professional, independent advice to landowners. It is unreasonable that landowners be expected to absorb this document, seek appropriate advice and be prepared to meet with the proponents of the plan within one week. This is a denial of natural justice. We request that you take urgent action to have the meeting of 18 December postponed and the proposal delayed until after the normal holiday period is completed. The member for Narre Warren North and Minister for Roads in Victoria, Luke Donnellan, is really only trying to fool frustrated commuters if he would have us believe that more flashing electronic signs and overhead gantries will significantly improve traffic efficiency. Minister, traffic gridlock on the Monash Freeway is not due to a lack of data informing us about how many lanes are open or how long it takes to get motorists from Narre Warren to Warragul road. Traffic gridlock is due to the fact that the Andrews Government makes much of its revenue receipts from the real estate and property development market. We all are forced to live a compromised quality of life so the State Government can make more and more money out of population growth and real estate transactions. But the Andrews Government has options. Why won't Luke Donnellan lobby Premier Daniel Andrews to provide Victorian residents with greater financial incentives to move into less populated regional areas, instead of trying to fool commuters with technology gimmicks? Let there be lights By Brendan Rees There are calls to have lights installed at Banjo Paterson Park in Lynbrook, as residents feel unsafe to walk through the area at night. Lynbrook Residents Association (LRA) president Jason Wood said the LRA petitioned for extra lighting on the path along the oval side of Paterson Drive, but it was unsuccessful. He said the LRA was disappointed with the result; adding “things looked positive” after Ms Arnott did a walk-through of the park with council officers. He said the park was used heavily by people going to and from the nearby Lynbrook train station. Mr Wood said during the winter months he would have to use a torch to walk his dog during the mornings when it was dark. “Extra lighting would not only make the path safer, so people could see where they are going, but the extra light would also deter those hoping to use the darkness to cover nefarious pursuits.” “There had also been a couple of assaults on people walking through the park on their way home.” Latest Crime Statistics Agency Victoria data showed the number of offences at Lynbrook train station had almost doubled, from seven to 13 offences in the year to June. Five public order offences were also recorded at the station, as well as six property damage and theft offences. Casey River Gum Ward councillor Damien Rosario supported the need for lights, adding it was ongoing concern for the community. “Visibility is important for the safety of people and the enjoyment of having to walk through the park,” he said. Building tools and materials valued at more than $100,000 have been uncovered by police in Hampton Park this morning. Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives arrested a 21 year-old Hampton Park man following the execution of a number of warrants. Police searched a Barnsbury Close property in Hampton Park, about 9.15am, where they located a large quantity of allegedly stolen tools and building materials. A number of the goods have already been linked to four local burglaries. A second warrant was carried out on Alisna Boulevard, Cranbourne North. Detective’s uncovered more allegedly stolen tools and building materials. A female resident from the property is also assisting police with inquiries.

Is it lights or is it something else? I’m open to a solution.”
Shine Lawyers compensation solicitor Rachel Rooney said the firm had seen a number of incidents across the State whereby pedestrians were injured on footpaths and in parks. “Common hazards include raised footpaths, caused by tree roots, potholes and telecommunication pits.” “The risk of injured is heightened, in areas of poor illumination. It is pleasing to hear that that Casey Council is taking active steps to further illuminate its parks and walkways,” she said. “Any step that guards against the risk of injury is welcomed.” A report will come back to council in March next year.

Kids showing true colours By Brendan Rees Cranbourne South Primary School was transformed into a rainbow of colour on Friday 8 December. The school’s Colour Run which celebrated the rebranding of their house system saw pupils from Foundation to Grade 6, and even parents, staff and teachers dousing themselves in coloured powder. Cranbourne South Primary School teacher Kathleen McDonald said the new house system consisted of four elements with a “unique energy force”. “The four elements include Biik (Earth), Munmut (Wind), Wiiny (Fire) and Baany (Water). Each of the elements can be connected to the school’s mission of empowerment, vision of creating confident, creative and responsible individuals and the four values of positivity, persistence, pride and passion,” she said. “As a whole school community we embraced the Colour Run.” She said students from each house alternated in throwing clouds of coloured powder at students who ran past them on the school’s oval. “We had teachers and parents spraying children with water bottles as they ran too.” Ms McDonald said a charity market was also held for their school’s Empowerment Project. “The market included sack races, face painting, stress balls, candy floss, popcorn and more. At the conclusion of our charity market we held our rebranding house system assembly where we also announced our new 2018 CSPS leaders. “Parents were very much involved in our charity market and were proud to see their children be given the role a CSPS leader.” Ms McDonald thanked the school’s professional learning community leader Karen Halket for organising such an “exciting and successful” event.

It’s life in the drop zone By Brendan Rees A group of Lynbrook residents are concerned about tall trees that loom over their homes. The Litchfield Way residents say gumtrees in the street that overhang their properties have dropped branches, with tree debris also blocking drainpipes and gutters. They petitioned Casey Council in March, but have never been able to have a solution in place that makes them feel safer. “We’re worried about them falling on top of our houses pretty much with this wild weather,” said resident and head petitioner Cheree, who did not wish to give her surname. “A lot of residents don’t even sleep in the front bedrooms of their homes because of the trees. They’re going to cause some damage.” Casey’s manager city presentation David Richardson said council had removed three trees from Litchfield Way “due to their condition.” Remedial pruning was also carried out for all trees in Litchfield Way, and they were also treated for bronze bug, a sap-sucking insect, he said. But Cheree said big trees still remained and residents were “unhappy” with the result. “We’ve been told by the arborists that they are going to get worse before they are going to get better. “They’re ripping up the concrete, and the roots are that big they are probably under people’s houses now.” She said residents were tired of cleaning up leaves, bark and tree debris that was building up on their properties. “Leaves in guttering can cause flooding in the street, it has happened before. There’s obviously nowhere for that stuff to run off. “People can’t get solar panels because the trees are blocking out the sun.” Prior to the removal of the three trees, a

River Gum Ward’s Cr Damien Rosario said he thought it was “hard to drum up support” to remove trees when council officers said the trees could be saved and maintained. He added bronze bugs had “absolutely destroyed these trees.” “If it all works out well, those trees will
become healthy again and receive the usual maintenance from council. “If the trees are not in good shape by early next year when the report comes back, I will be moving to get those things removed from the properties and re-planted.” Resident Baran Aga said he would support his neighbours if they wanted to take legal action against the council, as he feared for his children’s safety.

“I’m scared for the kids when they’re going outside playing, if some trees fall down on top of them.” At a Casey Council meeting on Tuesday 21 November, councillors voted that 17 trees that were recommended for retention would be retained. The health and condition of the trees will be reviewed in May next year with the head petitioner to be notified of the outcome.

A thief who was caught on CCTV allegedly stealing plants from a garden bed at Cranbourne Public Hall on Sunday 12 November has not lived up to her promise to reimburse the hall for the theft. The thief returned to the scene of the crime a few days later to leave a hand-written apology note under the front door of the Cranbourne Public Hall. The letter stated: “It was a bad choice of mine at the spur of the moment” and “I’d like to pay the $47 back to you.” Star News was in contact with the Cranbourne Hall this week and was advised the thief had not paid the $47 for the loss of the plants she claimed to have taken. A hall spokesperson said: “She got shamed and we got our message across - showing we have CCTV.”
Social media can be a powerful force for good. Recently, Casey police’s Eyewatch page put a call out on Facebook for help to find the parents of a two-year-old boy found wandering on Narre Warren South streets. In less than 30 minutes, the boy’s family got in touch with police and were on their way to being reunited. On the other hand, some commenters were quick to jump into a debate on the merits of the boy’s parents.

Carols, weather or not By Brendan Rees Gethsemane Church’s Clyde North Christmas Carols have been hailed as a resounding success. Although wild weather postponed the event for a week, organiser Pastor Kerrigan La-Brooy said he was overwhelmingly pleased with the turnout. “It proved to be a spectacular success. Stall holders, council members, sponsors, organisers and members of the community were all in agreement that the first-time event far exceeded expectations,” he said. Held at Hillcrest Christian College on Friday 8 December, the event attracted more than 1000 people. The evening included performances from Kerrigan La-Brooy, Derrick Junkeer, Mel Manuel, Lisa Ann, Naomi Horsley, Dancin’ Lines, Triple Treat Talent Academy, Gethsemane Church Choir, Ebony and Andrew Portelli, the Gethsemane Church team, Lisa Ann, and Lighthouse Hampton Park. Deputy Mayor Wayne Smith said he was honoured in his role as MC for the inaugural event. “A lot of fun was had by all, including some talented performers that I was lucky enough to share the stage with.” Local resident Honorine Gunasekera said: “This will be an evening to remember. Kerrigan had many blessings for the beautiful way he organised the whole Christmas event. We should give him all the support with his church in Berwick.” Vendor Debra Russell said she enjoyed the carols so much that she hoped a DVD of the night would be available next year: “I can’t get over all the amazing singers.”

the community.” Mr La-Brooy thanked the Gethsemane Church, major sponsor Barry Bourke Motors, and Hillcrest Christian College, as well as musicians, vendors, sponsors, entertainers, community groups and the public for helping to make the event so memorable. He said he hoped the Clyde Carols would continue for many years to come.

Flashmob meets the crowd in the spirit of Christmas
Motors fire to help kids More than 35 dedicated motorcyclists united in Cranbourne for the annual Christmas Toy Run last Sunday. The Toy Run, which supported the Father Bob Foundations, began at Bunnings Warehouse in Cranbourne with the Cranbourne Information and Support Centre collecting donations. Riders supporting the cause made their way to the CFMEU training complex in Port Melbourne where more than 500 people joined in celebrations with stalls, refreshments and live music available. All donations, including soft toys to canned food, toiletries, towels and cash will be distributed throughout the community before Christmas. Organiser Dale Maggs, who has contin-
ued the legacy of his mother, the late Barbara Maggs OAM who ran the event for more than three decades, said the community made a “great little effort” this year. “It’s extremely important to assist the needy over the year and even more so during the festive season. “Many families need support. Many don’t have the family network to rely on, and giving to support groups helps keep those in the community to be connected,” he said. “Motorcyclists are compassionate and caring community members making a difference,” he said, adding it was a great thing for those who needed a hand. Police from Casey and Cardinia were also out in force, ensuring the riders were safe on the roads.

Lyndhurst students got into the spirit of the season at the recent Lynbrook Village Christmas Market. On Thursday evening 16 November, Lynbrook Village hosted its annual Christmas Market for the local community. Lyndhurst Secondary College was invited to get involved with a community activity and decided to put on a ‘Flash Mob’ style dance for shoppers. Teacher Catherine Blackburne and a number of students worked on a short routine
practising in the weeks leading up to the event in their own time. On the night, the weather was a little damp but Lyndhurst students didn’t disappoint! The girls shone as they performed their festive and fun dance routine for passers-by. When the music started a few students began dancing, with others gradually joining in to create the flash mob. The students ended their routine with a cheer and then silently disappeared in among the gathered shoppers.

A Cranbourne opportunity shop has launched a decoration drive to make sure every household has a little festive bling this Christmas. Avocare's Cranbourne opportunity shop in Grace Street, has put the call out for people to donate their unwanted Christmas decorations. Avocare communications manager Rachel Greetham said the idea started with a conversation about the need for cheap decorations for those families in financial distress. She said many families could not afford decorations as they struggled to pay rent, bills and put food on the table.
The idea has now expanded to include donating decorations to the many charities which pick up food from Avocare’s warehouse in Dandenong South. “We are doing this because we are known as the ’go to charity’ and Christmas is a time for sharing and giving. We know a lot of families and individuals do go without and we are passionate about helping others,“ Ms Greetham said. Avocare is also holding a Christmas book sale at its Seaford Hub on Saturday 16 December, with all funds raised going back into assisting Avocare’s community work.

Pupils were treated to a world of fun during their annual sports day at Tooradin Primary School. With 12 activities on hand, there was no shortage of choice as students enjoyed a healthy bit of competition on Wednesday 6 December. The day even saw the teachers take on the students in a friendly game of basketball. From soccer to cricket, football, minor games, basketball, netball, yoga, dodgeball, tennis, hockey, and parachute games, students embraced the day with eagerness in perfect weather conditions. Well-being co-ordinator Rachel Davis said the parachute game involved a cat and mouse game where students ran in and out of a parachute.
“They worked as a team to fling a pretend rubber chicken as high as they could in the air - one group accidently flung him onto the nearby roof.” A ‘health chat’ activity also saw senior students demonstrating the amount of sugar in different soft drinks as well as discussing healthy eating. Physical education co-ordinator Mark Trounson said the theme of the day was to enjoy sport with enthusiasm, effort and teamwork. He said it was wonderful to see all the students enjoying themselves. “The students certainly embraced these qualities and displayed some fantastic acts of sportsmanship.” The school thanks all parents who supported the students throughout the day.

PARKLEA’S Gift Drive is back this year, bringing Christmas joy to children in need. The annual drive brings the community together to support disadvantaged families with gifts delivered via local charities 4C’s and Windermere. “For most children Christmas is a time of excitement as they look forward to holidays, feasts, lights and presents under the tree,” said Jarod Mills, Sales and Marketing Manager at Parklea. “However, for families struggling to put food on the table, the festive season can be a painful reminder of financial trouble.” Residents are urged to bring hope and Christmas cheer to local families this year by donating gifts for children up to 16 years old under the Gift Drive trees at Arena Shopping Centre and Timbertop Estate Sales Suite. Many of the children who will receive these gifts are victims of financial hardship, broken relationships, family violence, and lack of education. While Christmas gifts won’t solve these larger issues, they can bring hope and joy to children who have had to grow up faster than their peers. Each year The 4C’s and Windermere help thousands of families across the Cardinia Shire with financial support, housing, job assistance, counselling, life skills training and connection to services. In response to last year’s drive, Dr Lynette Buoy, CEO of Windermere, said she was grateful for the donations at this difficult time of year. “We are delighted by the support and display of strong community spirit and thank Parklea for helping us create Merry Moments for those in our community who would otherwise miss out this Christmas.” com.au

Victory on Cup Carousel By David Nagel The old saying goes that a change is as good as a holiday and a super-refreshed Like A Carousel proved that point precisely with a grinding victory in the $250,000 Sportsbet Pakenham Cup (2500m) on Saturday. Trained by Ken Keys at Cranbourne, the eight-year-old gelding exhibited the benefits of a European-style preparation, gunning down Khartoum ($31) and race favourite Oncidium Ruler (4.20) in the shadows of the post to record just his fourth victory in 52 career starts - at outsiders odds of $41. Keys suggested Like A Carousel, ridden by Linda Meech in the big race, was thoroughly enjoying his new training regime. “We pretty much stuck to the script until recently, but decided to change his program and it’s really rejuvenated his attitude towards racing,” Keys said. “He had a jumps preparation during winter and then spelled well and ran an outstanding race first up over 1800 metres at Sandown. The original plan was to run him a week later, but he was going that well we decided to put him straight out to the distance.” Keys wasn’t overly confident heading in, and the outstanding racing surface at Pakenham diminished his hopes even more on game day. “Look, he’s an old horse with some joint issues and we were pretty confident there would be some considerable give in the track,” Keys said. “But, considering the rain we had, the track at Pakenham held up remarkably well. We would have preferred it a bit softer but we’re more than happy with the end result.” Like A Carousel’s win continued a great winning streak for Keys in feature cups, with the Pakenham Cup now sitting proudly alongside silverware won at Bendigo, Cran-

In Saturday’s 111-run win over Kingston Hawthorn at Walter Galt Reserve, the Swans found that aggressive edge, the component of their game that unsettled teams last year. Sent in by Hawks skipper James Miller, opening batsmen Michael Wallace (48) and Devin Pollock (43) got the visitors off to a steady start, with Pollock in particular playing some textbook cover drives that raced along to the boundary. The pair guarded the middle order perfectly, rotating the strike with constant quick singles and putting away the balls that strayed off a good length. When Pollock spoon-feed a catch to Tyrone Kane at mid-off, the Swans were 1/79, and in a position to make a match-winning total. Wallace was then deceived by a clever piece of spin bowling by Yasiru Herath (1/31) to claim a vital wicket, with the score on 2/107. But returning from injury, skipper Lachlan Sperling (51 off 51 balls) and aggressive middle order batsman Jordan Wyatt (21) crunched the boundaries to slam on a quick 51-run partnership, with Sperling in particular launching three massive sixes off the slower bowlers. Pictures: NICK CREELY off the bottom of the ladder. “We had 11 contributors throughout the day, so that was probably the most pleasing thing from the victory,” he said. “Lambden, Fry, Serong and Rosey (Brendan Rose) all bowled really well - Rosey didn’t quite get the rewards, but he bowled to a plan and built pressure from the other end. “Jonah was just fantastic - we know we can just throw him the ball and he’ll put it in the right areas - the improvement every week in his match awareness is enormous.” Sperling said the start of the batting innings was crucial in the end, with Pollock and Wallace giving the Swans a tailor made start. “They (Wallace and Pollock) got us off to a pretty good start, it wasn’t a flying start, but we kept wickets in the shed which meant we could take more risks from probably around the 35 over mark,” he said. “It definitely gave us a decent platform to have a real crack in the last 15 overs.” The skipper finally returned from injury, and was pleased just to be able to contribute to the strong win. “It was just good to be back out there and playing, and it was nice to contribute personally, but getting the victory was the main thing,” he said. “It was one of those weeks because of the weather that I didn’t have much of a hit, so I went in with a really fresh mind, and it sort of paid off, and it helped with Wal and Dev getting off to a good start.” The Swans host Melbourne in the first two dayer of the season at Casey Fields on Saturday.

DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 5 Surprise packet St Mary’s provided the shock of the round, with a ripping upset victory over premiership favourites Berwick at Carroll Reserve, in a match that could shake up the tight tussle for finals spots. The Saints were brilliant in an important game for both clubs, with the Cam McDonnell Trophy being contested for the first time, an event named after the DDCA Hall of Fame champion, who enjoyed a stunning career with both clubs. After being sent in to bat, the Bears didn’t find their usual mojo and aggressiveness with the blade, instead scratching out a modest total of 9/149 off their 40 overs. Champion players Matt Chasemore (38) and Nathan Pilon (49) were the only two to make significant runs for the Bears, as the Saints’ versatile bowling line up of Wendyl Pires (2/24), Ashan Anthony (3/28) and Trevor Heldt (2/28) kept things tight and forced the visitors into false strokes. The Saints kept the runs flowing as they looked to gain a major scalp in their return year to Turf 1 cricket, and brilliantly chased the runs seven wickets down. Ruwantha Kellepotha (38 not out) topscored for the Saints, while Bears skipper Jarrod Goodes (4/37) did all he could to save the game for his side, who are struggling for consistency. Down at Casey Fields, Hallam Kalora Park crushed a disappointing Cranbourne, with the Hawks continuing on with their winning ways. Eagles skipper Lucas Ligt won the toss and elected to field, and Hawk opening pair Ben Hillard (27) and Leigh Booth (44) made life difficult, putting on 73 runs for the first wicket. Together, the pair put an unbeaten 120-run partnership, with the Magpies unable to restrict the free flowing reigning premiers. Pakenham has shown it belongs on the big stage of statewide Twenty20 cricket after reaching the semi-finals of the TAC Regional Big Bash at Frankston on Sunday. The Lions had claimed a series of impressive scalps en route to its qualifying final against Central Gippsland Cricket Association side Trafalgar at Jubilee Park. A superb bowling display from Pakenham saw the Lions tear through Trafalgar before Dom Paynter’s side made light work of the chase. Meanwhile, at the qualifying final between Buckley Ridges and South Caulfield on the neighbouring AH Butler Oval, the Bucks stormed to a mammoth 1/184 from their 20 overs after being sent in to bat. Star all-rounder Daniel Watson smashed an unbeaten 95 from just 58 balls despite batting with a runner for much of his innings after injuring his calf. Susantha Pradeep (31) and Suren Ekanayake (47 not out) also shone with the willow for the DDCA side, which then restricted South Caulfield to just 9/116 from their 20 overs with Jurgen Anderson (2/18), Greg Todd (2/17), and spinner Matt Goodwright (2/18) claiming two
wickets apiece. The Lions then faced the Bucks on Sunday afternoon in the semi-final stage and put up one hell of a fight. Zac Chaplin made the mad dash from Bonbeach to replace Nic Close (hamstring) for the clash and had an immediate impact - snaring 2/22. Tom Tyrrell (3/27) was the standout of the Lions attack as it restricted the Bucks to 7/130 from its 20 overs. Pakenham was superb in the field - highlighted by a screamer of a catch by a leaping Chris Smith, and a brilliant direct-hit run-out by Sean Gramc. Season of century By David Nagel A second century of the season to Tooradin (0/171) master-blaster Tom Hussey (102 not out) guided the Seagulls to a 10-wicket victory over Clyde (7/169) in the West Gippsland Cricket Association Premier Division on Saturday. One of the all-time greats of the WGCA, Hussey and his opening partner Russ Lehman (50 not out) put the Premier Division debutants to the sword in 27.2 overs of utter brutality. The pair made a difficult run-chase look easy after the Cougars had fired with the willow in the first half of the one-day encounter. The techniques of Gavin Britt (72), John Simpson (36) and Dave Denton (20) all stood up to the second-placed Seagulls attack, which was led by a four-wicket haul to Bailey Lowndes (4/31). Emerald (6/141) would have been partying hard on Saturday night after securing its first win of the season against Merinda Park (135) in the battle of the cellar-dwellers at Donnelly Reserve. Batting first, the Bombers relied on the steadying influence of Trent Rolfs (36 not out) and Mitchell Thomas (34) to build what can only be described as a competitive score. The Cobras version of Mitchell Thomas (2/26) starred with the ball, before his team set off in hot pursuit of its total after tea. Once again it was Daniel McCalman (54) who led the way for the Cobras, who fell short despite the Bombers providing the second-top score with 28 extras. Rolfs (3/25) capped off a great all-round performance while Clinton Marsh (2/26) and Aaron Brooks (2/35) also played key roles in the victory. The Bulls posted an even-par score, on the back of fighting knocks from Ben Parrott (51), Alex Nooy (31) and Travis Wheller (24), but were pulled into line by the nagging efforts of Troy McDermott (4/17) and Chris Smith (3/26). The Lions then cruised to victory with Jason Williams (67 not out) and Zac Chaplin (55 not out) sharing an unbeaten stand of 126. The third-placed Lions are now two games clear of the Bulls in fourth spot.
Ladies are sitting pretty on top of ladder CRANBOURNE BOWLS Another win to the ladies side puts them on top of the ladder after dispensing with Pakenham by a massive 47 shots during the week. The ladies can now have a happy break until resumption of games on the 16th of January. In Saturday Pennant Cranbourne 1 up against ladder leader Beaumaris and despite making a good contest of the game came up short against the benchmark side. Victory for the number 4 side put them on top of the ladder with smiles all round especially for first time bowler Dennis Tomlin who 18 months ago experienced a major health scare. Dennis played his first game of pennant bowls and his side went on to win by 31 shots. Ladies Side 1 Division 1 Skip Freda Farrall and her crew of Maree Taylor, Joyce Pearce and Kath Dudink scored 32 shots and only allowed 6 shots to the opposition. While Skip Sue Hudson and her rink of Isobel Partington, Shirley Venville and Joy McLisky continued the previous weeks good form and won by 19 shots. Side 1 Division 2 Cranbourne played Beaumaris at home and went down by 21 shots. Skip Fritz Helle and his crew of Gavin Wright. John Stanley and Graeme Wood were very competitive with a draw while Skips Ron Lyfield and Barry Thomas lost by small margins, however the rink Skipped by Doug Boggie faced strong opposition on the day. After the game the selectors were confident that Cranbourne could bridge the gap and hopefully put up a stronger contest when the two sides meet again in round 18. Side 2 Division 3 Cranbourne travelled to Armadale and came up short by 10 shots. Some great wins by Skip Chris Griffiths supported by Club legend Ray Boskell, Joy McLisky and Brian Grant with 7 shots up and Skip Gerry Dudink and his crew of Vic Butera, Harry Van Soest and Gary Farrington who won by 7 shots. It was great to see Gary Farrington back playing great bowls again after injuries from a work accident last month.
