Burn on beeches A last-minute proposal to remove 13 of the 22 beech trees that comprise the Avenue of Beeches in Sherbrooke has added further fuel to the fire over an ongoing planning dispute.

On the eve of an independent planning panel meeting, regarding a proposal to redevelop the iconic Burnham Beeches estate, communitywatchers of the project expressed dismay at the additional proposal to lop the trees to enable road widening and driveway works.

The owners of the Sherbrooke site, celebrity chef Shannon Bennett and business partner Adam Garrison, are seeking to significantly redevelop the site, including the restoration of the Norris Building.

However, objectors to the latest proposal say the trees are synonymous with the region and need to be retained.

panel on Thursday 7 December was resident Melissa Hepworth.

“These trees are the most photographed part of the landscape ... they’re what makes Sherbrooke,” she said.

“These very trees, the beech trees, are what Burnham Beeches is named after ... is it worth restoring the Norris Building if it’s detrimental to the rest of the amenity in the area?

“I had a vision too when I moved to Sherbrooke 22 years ago. I hope their vision doesn’t destroy my vision.”

Ms Hepworth also commented on reports of helicopters landing on the site.

“Why haven’t they applied for a helipad?

Probably because they don’t want to rock the boat any further regarding their application,” she said.

Mr Bennett and Mr Garrison are seeking permission to develop the site to include a residential hotel, additional restaurant in the

piggery building, a brewery with food and drink areas, shop with food and drink areas, two small staff accommodation buildings, intersection works at the Sherbrooke Road entrance and vegetation removal.

The proposal was exhibited in 2016 and received 93 submissions, including from Parks Victoria, the managers of the adjacent Alfred Nicholas Gardens, which expressed strong support.

Most of the 86 submissions were overwhelmingly critical and highlighted the effect on safety in the event of a bushfire for residents and visitors, and inadequate response to heritage values, traffic and parking, environmental and landscape impacts, excessive scale and inadequate application information.

The panel hearing took place over 4, 5, and 7 December, in front of panel members Lester Townsend, Peter Edwards and Natasha Reifschneider.

A representative for the developers, as well as Yarra Ranges Council representatives, was also in attendance.

The panel hearing gave the opportunity for both sides to put forward there position to the panel, which will prepare their recommendations in coming weeks.

Among those addressing the panel was Betty Marsden from Save the Dandenongs League, as well as community members Jacqui Wicks, Peta Freeman and Kathryn Nauta.

Ms Marsden said Save the Dandenongs League had fought similar battles before and that she had a deep connection with the site.

She recalled walking the site when just nine years old, during the World War II era.

Ms Nauta expressed disappointment over a plan that would see Burnham Beeches patrons be permitted to use the Alfred Nicholas Gardens entrance.

Fatal hit charges

By Kath Gannaway A Steels Creek man has died, and a Seville woman walking with him sustained serious injuries after being hit by a car on the Monbulk-Seville Road at Seville on Saturday, 9 December.

A 27-year-old Monbulk man, the driver of the car, faced Melbourne Magistrates' Court today (Monday, 11 December) charged with dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing serious injury.

The man, 58, and woman, 68, were walking the man’s dog on the verge of the road when they were struck from behind around 1pm.

Emergency services treated them at the

scene, but were unable to revive the man. The woman suffered serious injuries and was taken by air ambulance to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Detective Sergeant Darren Williams of the Major Collision Investigation Unit said they would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash or observed the car involved prior to the crash.

He said the vehicle had been observed being driven in an erratic way just prior to the collision.

“What we look for in our investigation of this type is speed, drugs and alcohol. They will form part of our investigation,” Det Sgt Williams said.

“This is another tragedy that’s struck our

Coming into the festive season, police are reminding those holding parties to consider neighbouring houses.

On 3 December at 7.30am Emerald police were called to a premises on Henry Street, Koowee rup for loud music. The hosts were handed an $1800 fine for failing to obey police direction to abate noise. Emerald Police Sergeant Dave Calkin reminded residents to be considerate of neighbouring houses.

“As we're coming into the festive season - if you’re having parties at home be considerate towards neighbours ... keep the noise down after midnight, and if a direction is given by police to abate noise then follow it, otherwise it is a fine,” Sgt Calkin said.

“A popular misconception is that just telling your neighbours you’re having a party is a licence to make as much noise as you like for as long as you like.”

Failing to obey police direction to abate noise is a $793 fine.

Scout hall burglaries Police are investigating a series of targeted burglaries on Scout halls within the outer eastern suburbs since 23 November. A total of six Scout halls have since been targeted.

These halls are in Ferntree Gully, Bayswater, Heathmont, Belgrave and Mount Evelyn, with cash and electronic items stolen.

Between 12.40am and 12.50am on Sunday 3 December, two men approached and assaulted a male walking through Alma Treloar Park in Cockatoo.

The alleged offenders are described as being Caucasian and about 25 years old.

It is believed one of the men was wearing blue camouflage clothing and the other offender was wearing a khaki jacket and had black curly hair.

“Council will make the report public and available on our website in the weeks following that.

Council’s strategic planning team will report to the council on the panel’s findings at a council meeting intended to be early next year,” she said.

The panel hearing is the latest in a series of meetings over the developers’ proposals.

In August 2015, Yarra Ranges Council unanimously rejected a call from the owners of Burnham Beeches in Sherbrooke for a planning scheme amendment that would allow up to 80 hotel villas on the historic site. The villas were to be sold as investment properties to raise funds to complete the overall development.

The ‘Mail’ has attempted to contact Mr Garrison for comment and will endeavour to publish a response.

Q&A The editor’s desk Despite its inherently nauseating nature, many audiences do take fake news with a grain of salt.

However, there are occasions where it can be downright dangerous.

A recent example is a post in a popular Yarra Ranges-related Facebook page, which left a few members confused last week.

The post read: ‘Warning’. These two men are going around Emerald District knocking on doors claiming to be from the council and are asking for entry to your home to check your taps for water contamination. Do not let them in, they are not council workers. Please share this with your friends as they are dangerous! Don’t answer the door if you’re home alone!

The post featured a picture of two middle-aged men, with smiling faces.

Many may have picked up the gag that is, the two men pictured were actually actors Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern, who played bumbling crime duo - Marvin and Harry - in the hit film ‘Home Alone’.

But it’s obvious the reference was missed by a few, which begs the question - could there be a risk of unnecessary panic being spread locally?

Scammers, including unqualified builders offering services, are known to have operated in the region from time to time. Perhaps there are even members of the page who have even been scammed themselves.

This incident should serve as a reminder of the importance of good journalism and ethical editorial practices.

Ranges beat the floods

By Peter Douglas The Yarra Ranges seems to have escaped any major damage, after more than 150mm of rain fell on the region from Friday 1 December to Sunday 3 December.

As flooding from the three-day December storms subsided over the last week, extensive inspections of the damage took place, with council reporting only minimal impact.

Thankfully, no reports of damage to houses were reported to either the municipal recovery manager or Yarra Ranges Council’s building surveyor.

Yarra Ranges Council chief executive officer, Glenn Patterson, said there were no reports of damage to any council assets.

“We had prepared for the weekend by distributing messages from agencies, such as VICSES, to the community and placing 31 employees on standby for the storms,” Mr Patterson said.

“We received more than 125 road and drain-related requests and 25 tree-related requests over the weekend, with Healesville, Mount Evelyn and Upwey some of the most affected areas.

“We are still assessing the impact of the weather on reserves and community infrastructure, such as roads and footpaths, along with business and tourism, including our local farms.”

Mr Patterson praised local emergency services, council employees and community member for their efforts in preparing and responding to the storm.

Meanwhile, Liberal candidate for Evelyn, Bridget Vallence, took to the skies to inspect the damage from a different vantage-point.

Burn-off caution from CFA

By Derek Schlennstedt CFA and Yarra Ranges Council are reminding residents to clean-up their properties in the lead-up to the implementation of fire restrictions which will commence from 1am on Monday 18 December.

Though they urge residents not to ‘rush out’ to try and beat the restriction date, and if burning off to heed the CFA website and advice.

CFA Operations Manager Dave Renkin said during the lead up to the restriction date, CFA stations around the Yarra Ranges receive a high number of call-outs to fires that get out of control from overzealous property owners trying to reduce their fuel loads before the restrictions.

“We do get a bit of a spike, before the fire restriction period being introduced,” he said.

“I suppose historically over a number of years, we’ve seen a number of burn-offs get away from residents - the weather conditions will change and unfortunately we do get the scenario where we get a number of fires that do escape and require the services of local brigades.”

Although many residents use burning-off as a way of reducing fuel loads on their property, Mr Renkin also suggested other alternatives such as green waste bins and Yarra Ranges Council Bundled Branches initiative - an initiative where the council collects up to three cubic metres of bundled branches from properties within the municipality.

Mr Renkin also acknowledged that while the Yarra Ranges had seen above average rainfall, it won’t take long for undergrowth and fuel loads to dry out.

“Even though we’ve had some good rainfall over the last weekend it’s not going to take very long for conditions to dry out,” he said.

smoke they see to triple-zero.

“Conditions will get a lot worse than what they have been.”

Restrictions mean no fires can be lit in the open without a permit.

The restrictions apply to residents in the Yarra Ranges, Knox, Maroondah and parts of Manningham.

Mr Renkin said residents who choose to burn-off before restrictions are implemented

should monitor weather conditions, ensure they have a hose or water source nearby and register their burn-off with the CFA. Tasty Az needs sweet as home to help out more youths

By Derek Schlennstedt The future of Lilydale social enterprise Tasty Az remains unclear, after the enterprise which empowers young people living with disabilities and highlights their inspirational talents was told it had to vacate its current site by April this year.

Since its inception in 2013 the social enterprise has blossomed into a catering and hospitality service that provides specialist training and experience for young people living with disabilities.

Late last year, founder Jules Morman found out that their current site on Mangans Road, Lilydale was due to be developed into units, leaving them displaced.

The Mail spoke to Ms Morman, who said she had faced regular sleepless nights where she would scour the Lilydale area for possible sites.

“It’s been really fabulous to do this here but we’re in a position now where we’re going to be displaced,” Ms Morman said.

“We are catering with a conscience; we nurture and support every young person to reach their own individual potential, to strive for their own goals, while also catering for our community.”

The lack of security surrounding their future has also meant that Jules has had to refuse future applicants.

“I would have had in excess of 12 inquiries over the last four to five weeks,” she said.

“Not having a premises to move to makes me hesitant though ... I’d like to say next year we’re taking new applicants but how can you do that if you haven’t got a place to go to?”

The enterprise has already won two prestigious awards since its beginnings and on two occasions has catered for the Premier of Victoria, Daniel Andrews.

Although Ms Morman has searched tirelessly for a new location without result, Yarra Ranges Council recently decided to look at the viability to transform the former Montrose Maternal and Child Health Centre (MCHC) which was due to for demolition as a location for Social Enterprises.

Eildon Park’s solid score

By Richard Millott Eildon Park posted a solid score in their Round 7 encounter with Mountain Gate.

Cody Morris produced a century (105) for the Panthers, with Jarryd Gaskin (53*) and Monte Perera (50) adding to the total with half centuries to guide the innings to 7/303.

Fresh from his Eastern FM Radio appearance, Josh Lindner led the way with the ball, claiming 3/94.

The Basin were also the beneficiary of a century maker, as Jayden Turcinovic lodged an

unbeaten 134* against Knoxfield. The Knights were in the field all day, sharing the wickets around as The Basin finished on 7/260.

Cameron Wheeler continued on his wicket-taking ways in their match against Upper Ferntree Gully.

Wheeler claimed 5/51, taking him to 24 wickets for the season in only seven matches at an average of 10.83 - including three fivewicket innings and a 10-wicket match.

Steven Moore also among the wickets with a season-best 4/31. With the willow, Pete Dunlop logged 67 to help guide the Kings to 148.

Knox Gardens posted 210 in their match-up with Belgrave. Jarrod Butcher led the way for the Falcons with 44, ably helped by starts from Niraj De Silva (32) and Scott McInerney (32).

For the Magpies, Aaron Brunner claimed 4/45 with the pill in a winnable match for either team.

Finally, Johnson Park have made inroads on Ferntree Gully prior to stumps, having earlier been dismissed.

The Sharks were all out for 154, with Steve Devenish (52) the only bat to get a start. Jayden Bradbury claimed 5/19, with Tim Parker 4/40.

In response, the Blues finished the day at 3/31 as the Sharks were hungry to redeem.

In Decoite Shield, Ferntree Gully Footballers were able to post a large score against Rowville thanks to numerous contributors.

Nick Bogar (88), Ben Rawlings (56), Tharanga Lakshita (43) and Ben Storey (31) all chipped in to the Griffin’s tally to end the day 8/298. For Rowville, Louis Holmes lead the way with 4/95.

Cameron Cosstick had a day to remember in Lysterfield’s match against Olinda. Cosstick claimed 6/37 and was a main catalyst in keeping Olinda to 131.

Juniors finish 2017 on a high after some wild weather MONBULK CRICKET After a couple of wild weeks of weather, it was nice to see all Monbulk teams back on the park over the weekend.

The Friday night juniors played their last match before the Christmas break with a onedayer, with all teams winning including a very excited Under 12s team.

All senior teams and the Saturday morning juniors commenced a two-day match.

A reminder to the whole Monbulk Cricket Club that next Saturday night 16 December is the Christmas Party.

After having to wait an extra week for cricket to arrive again due to torrential rains last weekend, cricketers around the Yarra Ranges were champing at the bit to resume the cut and thrust of the season.

With two-day games being cut down to one day in the competition’s top grades, victories would prove crucial in establishing ladder positions.

The game of the round in DJ Strachan Shield had to be between the top two performing teams this season, Mount Evelyn and Yarra Junction, and the game didn’t fail to deliver.

On their home deck, Mount Evelyn batted first, and it was in-form opener Daniel Giblin (51) who set the pace for the home team.

With Nick Bark (2/26) removing his partner in crime, Jesse Fraser, in a brilliant spell of bowling, Giblin set about the task giving his team the best part possible.

A 62-run partnership with Gareth Fraser had the Mounters humming along nicely.

Jesse Cook (3/52) and Terry Ottrey combined for an excellent partnership of bowling that netted three wickets and put the brakes on the Mount Evelyn innings.

Mount Evelyn captain Kane Jones (32) threatened, but the remainder of the batting line-up had to scratch and scrape for their runs and eventually their innings was closed at 7/157, a decent total, but one that was very much attainable.

Yarra Junction made a brisk start courtesy of openers Andy Wear and Andy Taylor, and they were able to maintain their momentum despite some tidy bowling from the home side.

Brad and Kane Jones were able to keep things tight, but Wear stood firm on his way to a half century.

The innings proved to be a real arm wrestle as Yarra Junction stood firm against some disciplined bowling.

With a dash for the total on the horizon, Wear lost his wicket, and the Eagles gradually

slipped off the required rate, courtesy of some well executed late bowling from Chad Witherdin (4/29) and Gareth Fraser.

The Eagles were still within reach of the total late into the innings, but just couldn’t muster the big over required to break the Mounters’ back.

In the end, they fell agonisingly nine runs short in a brilliant contest.

Yarra Glen and Healesville also played out a close game at Queen’s Park.

MONBULK BOWLS Both Monbulk teams had resounding wins in Saturday pennant.

Monbulk 1 played Ringwood at home and had three rinks up winning by 35 shots 96 to 61. Brian Smith’s rink won by 11 shots, 29 to 18, Andrew Bell won by 5 shots in a low scoring affair 17 to 12. Eric Markham’s rink had a resounding win by 22 shots 31 to 9 and Richard Cookson’s rink went down on the last end by 3 shots 19 to 22. This win puts Monbulk 1 into sixth position and challenging for a finals place.

Monbulk 3 continued their good form winning by 43 shots against Ringwood 80 to 37.

Doug Elliot’s rink won in a close contest by one shot, Alan Brookes rink won by 10 shots and Ray Pike’s rink had a massive win by 32 shots, 39 to 7. Monbulk 3 is now firmly entrenched in the top two.

In Tuesday pennant Monbulk 1 had a comfortable win against Bayswater at home winning by 31 shots 84 to 53. Andrew Bell’s rink won by 24 shots, 34 to 10, Peter Koomen’s rink won by 16 shots 33 to 17 and Eric Markham’s rink went down by 9 shots 17 to 26.

Monbulk 2 had a tough day at Heathmont losing 35 shots to 69. Dick Coppin tied on his rink, while Eric Furby went down by 13 shots and Graeme Goller lost by 21 shots.

Monbulk 3 travelled to Vermont South and in a very close game went down by 3 shots. Peter Francis won by 9 shots, but Ray Pike went down by 7 shots and Lorraine McLaren lost by 5 shots.

The Club Championship finals for singles will be held this Sunday 17 December at 10am.

The men’s final will be keenly contested between Andrew Bell and Richard Cookson and the women’s final will be worth watching between Karen Rice and Margaret O’Brien.

YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS Yarra Ranges Athletics had four club athletes compete at Australian Schools Championships in Adelaide over the last week.

Georgia Laven and Tayleb Willis were competing in the Australian All Schools Championships. Georgia competed in the 16 Girls 1500m on Saturday finishing fifth in 4.35.96s.

On Sunday, Georgia competed in the Under 16 Girls 800m running a fantastic 2.10.96s to claim the bronze medal.

Tayleb did not qualify for the final of the 16 Boys 100m hurdles on Saturday, but per-

formed better on Sunday to miss bronze by a mere .24 of a second, eventually finishing sixth in 26.94s.

Tayleb stormed home in the 200m hurdles to finish sixth in 26.94s. Earlier in the week, Maddie Laven and Indi Linde competed in the Pacific School Games with Maddie recording a PB when finishing 6th in the 12 Girls 1500 with a time of 4.50.84, Indi finished ninth in the same race with a PB of 4.57.78.

Maddie also competed in the 800m finishing 10th in 2.26.91. After a miserable weekend in Victoria last week where all athletics competitions were cancelled due forecast rain, the weather subsided enough for Yarra Ranges

Athletics athletes to compete this weekend.

The Little Athletics athletes enjoyed their first championship round of the season with a multi event round. This Friday will be the final round of Little Athletics for 2017.

A modified Twilight program starting from 6pm with the chance of a special visitor during the evening.

The seniors will also be competing on Friday night with the last round of AV Shield for 2017 held at Lakeside Stadium.
