MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk As a parent I am very interested in the local job market, and where the children of our communities are going to find employment locally in the future. Obviously there will, in any cohort of school-leavers in any given year, be a certain number who pursue tertiary study in a particular field for which they have a passion. And that’s terrific for those with that mindset and ambition. But uni is not for everyone, and gaining a trade qualification can open just as many, if not in some cases more future doors than a tertiary degree. I had the pleasure of chatting with two local businesses for our cover story this week, one large and one small, both of which are committed to giving apprentices a start. And hopefully encouraging those young people to stay in our local communities. What’s clear though is that the commitment is a two-way street employers are looking for those to whom they give a chance to give back in terms of turning up on time, showing a commitment to learn, and a desire to go the extra mile to prove themselves. Our current generation do not all possess the kind of work ethic required by local employers - as parents and as a community as a whole it’s imperative we instil in them a solid work ethic to help guide their futures. ● Jeremy Sollars

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…

RATEPAYERS FOOT SHED BILL BY JEREMY SOLLARS A new shelter shed for the Swanfels Pioneer Memorial Park east of Warwick has ended up costing ratepayers nearly $40,000 after apprentice provider All Trades Queensland pulled out of the project. The original shelter sheds in the park were demolished in January this year by the Southern Downs Regional Council, which deemed them unsafe due to termite damage. The timber and iron-roofed sheds had formerly been a tennis shelter and a play shed at the old Swanfels State School. They were moved to the district’s Pioneer Park in the early 1980s. Apprentices or trainees from All Trades Queensland (ATQ) were to have been engaged to construct the replacement shelter as a one-off project to give them work experience at no cost to the council, and $25,000 was set aside in the 2017/'18 council budget for materials. But ATQ was unable to locate a locally based registered training supervisor for the project, and the council was forced to engage a ‘local contractor’ to complete the construction, at an additional cost to the council of “approximately $13,000”, a council spokeswoman confirmed. The spokeswoman did say that ATQ undertook “preliminary site grubbing work at the beginning of the project”. The council has not made public the identity of the contractor who finished the job. Current and former local residents and former students of Swanfels State School were furious when the council razed the shelter sheds to the ground on Friday 20 January, less than 72 hours after announcing the sheds were to go.

BY JEREMY SOLLARS

A new shelter shed at the Swanfels Pioneer Memorial Park is complete. The park itself is hallowed ground in the Swanfels district, with plaques and trees commemorating early settlers and later families alike, and in some cases marking the site of their ashes, and is also popular among passing tourists such as ‘grey nomads’. After the demolition, the council released a community survey asking residents if they wanted the sheds replaced, and if so with either a “simple structure” or “reconstruction of a structure similar to the previous building”. The overwhelming resolution of a public meeting in the park back in March was for council to construct a timber-and-iron structure as close as possible in size and design to the original sheds.

The meeting was told a council report - of which the Free Times obtained a copy - made it clear that the termite damage to the sheds was not insurmountable, leaving many to question why the demolition was ever carried out.’ The report by Osborn Consulting said that while “the building does not meet the current regulatory standards framework ... it is generally in good structural condition (and) damaged and missing elements ... could be remediated and/or replaced which may increase the life expectancy of the structure”. The Free Times also revealed at the time that the last council budget set aside $20,000 for the works referred to in the Osborn Consulting report. ●

NEW LOCAL LAWS POWERS ON ANIMALS In a media statement the council said a removal notice “may require the owner to destroy the animal, or permanently remove the animal from a specified area”. “It will be an offence to not comply with a removal notice,” the statement said. “If the owner fails to comply with a removal notice, an authorised person may seize the animal and dispose of the animal. “Written submissions by any person in support of, or objecting to, the proposed local law are invited for a period ending on Friday 22 December stating the grounds of the submission, and the facts and

circumstances relied on in support of the grounds. “During the consultation period, the proposed local law will be available for inspection and purchase at council’s offices at 64 Fitzroy Street, Warwick, and 61 Marsh Street, Stanthorpe.” The proposed local law is also available for viewing on council’s website, www.sdrc. qld.gov.au Written submissions are to be made to Southern Downs Regional Council, PO Box 26, Warwick Qld 4370, ormail@sdrc.qld.gov. au, before 5pm, 22 December. ● Taxation, financial advice and auditing for individuals, small business, primary producers and clubs.

Out-of-town ratepayers connected to the Southern Downs Regional Council’s ‘restricted flow’ water supply are charged more than $700 if they choose to opt out of the service. Numerous properties in the Rosenthal Heights and surrounding areas on the fringe of Warwick are supplied with town water through a small-gauge poly pipe network which delivers town water at a lower rate than town-based residences. A Rosenthal Heights resident contacted the Free Times venting frustration at the cost of the restricted flow service, saying they were completely self-sufficient when it came to water and objected to paying nearly $400 a year for water they don’t use. The council currently charges $386.70 per year for each restricted flow connection, and the owner of any unconnected block within 100 metres of the pipe network is hit up for $290. But if ratepayers choose to disconnect from the supply, they are slugged with a fee of $720. The Rosenthal Heights resident, who spoke to the Free Times on the condition of anonymity, said they installed three 5000 gallon rainwater tanks on their property since building their house in 2007. “I am a single person, and I am completely self-sufficient for water,” the resident said. “I am totally confident that even in extreme drought conditions I would have sufficient water. “So why should I have to pay $193 every six months for a water service I don’t need and don’t want? “The only time I have ever used the water was when I first built and moved into the house and I filled up one of my tanks. “I have 350 square metres of catchment from the house and the sheds - this gives me all the water I require. “I would disconnect (from the restricted flow supply), but I’m not going to pay $720.” A council spokeswoman confirmed the supply and disconnection fees in a statement to the Free Times. * We’d like to hear from other ratepayers on the restricted flow network - if you have similar views or concerns, call Free Times editor Jeremy Sollars on 4661 9800. ●

The Southern Downs Regional Council will carry out public consultation on proposed changes to its ‘Animal Management’ Local Law, which would give its officers the power to remove and euthanise problem animals such as barking dogs, as a result of community complaints. As reported last week, councillors at their November meeting voted in favour of giving animal control officers the ability to issue ‘removal notices’ to the owners of nuisance animals if the owners fail to comply with earlier compliance directives.

Skills transfer - Belinda Benz 'styles' her apprentice Bella Millard.

WILLING TO LEARN A BY JEREMY SOLLARS

s one school year draws to a close and with another one not all that far away, many local families are turning their minds to the future - and what their kids are going to do for a living. As is the case with any regional community, towns like Warwick and Stanthorpe are faced with the same dilemma when it comes to the younger generation - will our kids find work and stay around here, or will they take off for the bright lights of the big cities? We all know that university is not a post-school option or indeed a dream or a desire - for all senior schoolers, And nor is it necessarily the key to the future, with everincreasing numbers of uni graduates unable to find work within their chosen field of learning. And while our region desperately needs to attract new industries, as well as see existing ones expand, the good news is that many of our local businesses remain passionate about and committed to offering opportunities to encourage

our youth to stick around, rather than take off to the likes of Brisbane. The Free Times caught up with two such local businesses this week for a chat about their employment strategy for young people - one large, and one small. But their philosophy is the same - offer real job opportunities in exchange for a commitment to learn. Belinda Benz owns Hair Kreations in Warwick and currently has one apprentice, Bella Millard, on the team, and has signed up two new part-time apprentices, one set to start before Christmas and another one early in the new year. While there’s a range of government incentives to encourage the employment of apprentices - and rightly so - Belinda is simply keen to do what she can to keep local young people here in their home town. “I think it’s important to keep passing skills on, to keep trades going,” she told the Free Times. “University isn’t for everyone and having people learning

trades has a lot of ongoing benefits all round. “It’s about keeping skills and knowledge here in the community, and keeping young people here. “What I am looking for is a conscientious attitude, someone who’s pro-active and willing to learn, and also someone with a nice personality, and a nice manner with the customers.” Clearly fitting that bill is 16-year-old Bella, who came to Hair Kreations after a work experience stint while a senior at Assumption College. “I had thought about doing accounting but I really enjoyed the work experience,” Bella said. “I was fortunate to be given the chance to do a schoolbased traineeship which I started in March this year, and now I’m a full-time apprentice.” Part of the deal is Bella’s completion of a Certificate III in Hairdressing through TAFE, with Belinda utilising MEGT Australia as her employer service provider, and TAFE as the training organisation.

TY TURNER-BRYAN THIRD YEAR APPRENTICE FITTER AND TURNER. “I’M JUST INTO THIS TYPE OF WORK - BEFORE I WAS WORKING ON DRILLING RIGS AND DOING SEISMIC SURVEY WORK, BUT THAT INDUSTRY (MINING) WAS STARTING TO SLOW DOWN A BIT.” HARRY LLOYD - THIRD YEAR APPRENTICE ELECTRICIAN. “I’VE GOT A LOT OF CLOSE FRIENDS WITH ONLY A FEW OF THEM HAVING TRADES SOME ARE JUST WORKING NORMAL FACTORY JOBS. IT’S DEFINITELY GOOD TO HAVE A TRADE BEHIND YOU.”

Commitment to learn (from left) John Dee apprentices Harry Lloyd and Ty Turner-Bryan with Henry and John Hart. At the other end of the scale is one of the region’s biggest employers, export beef processor John Dee Warwick. The company owned by Warwick’s Hart family - which commenced operations back in 1939 - has an existing workforce of 630, and a $15 million expansion project for a new ‘regional cold storage’ facility is expected to create another 150 local jobs. John Dee employs apprentices in a range of trades, including engineering, hydraulics, electrical, pneumatics, welding and more. John Hart and son Henry oversee the trades side of the business, including the hiring and training of apprentices. The abattoir currently has four apprentices on deck, with another two having recently completed their terms. Their need for new apprentices varies, as John Hart says, with “throughput”, but they remain committed to giving the right young people a start when the need and the opportunity exists. “There’s a vast range of skills we require, mainly focused in the electrical and mechanical areas,” John Hart told the Free Times. “Our needs are very broad, and the experience we offer is very transferrable. “What we look for is some experience in those areas, even that experience gained through a farming background, or mechanical experience through a hobby.

“Along with that, we’re looking for apprentices with the interest and the aptitude - above all we need parents to be co-operative in assisting them to succeed and to encourage them.” Henry says the key is “enthusiasm that lasts” and being “timely”. In other words, turn up on time. “Our apprentices are trained in every facet of the operation, including health and safety,” he said. “There’s a million working parts down there and they all need specific attention, it’s not just applying a little bit of grease,” he said. “So they’re working with people from right across the operation, communication skills are huge, and being able to work as part of a larger team. “It’s very rare that you’ll be doing something by yourself. “Obviously from our point of view as an employer there’s a significant time commitment on our part when it comes to training an apprentice.” John Hart said around 70 per cent of John Dee apprentices stayed with the company after completion, but some had gone on to other things, in a couple of cases being a navy diver and a commercial pilot. “We see apprenticeships as building a life - we want them to make it a part of their life, to grow into the job and be integral to their long-term strategy.” ●

Southern Downs Regional Council - another major employer in the region - employed nine trainees and apprentices in 2017. A spokeswoman said of those “four were in administration, one in horticulture, two in civil construction and two were in automotive”. “An additional five trainees and apprentices will commence in 2018 in the areas of administration and automotive,” the spokeswoman said. “Council also had 10 existing staff commence apprenticeships in civil construction and water industry operations.”

What’s our region’s current unemployment rate? For the March to June quarter 2017 the Southern Downs local government region’s “seasonally adjusted” unemployment rate rose from 4.4 per cent to 4.8 per cent. For the same period in 2011 it sat at 5.8 per cent. The lowest unemployment rate in the region between now and then was 3.4 per cent - in June 2013.

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay (GC2018 QBR) conducted a trial run through Warwick on Saturday 2 December. The Southern Downs is one of only two regions in which this trial will be conducted, and will feature the Commonwealth Games branded vehicle convoy with a full police presence. The route through the Warwick CBD was specifically designed to incorporate as many schools as possible and to involve as many school children as possible. The Commonwealth Games vehicle convoy began at Warwick East State Primary School, and included stops at Warwick State High School, Warwick Central State Primary School and St Mary’s Primary School. Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie said involving school children in the celebration of the Commonwealth Games supported the key themes of the Commonwealth Games 2018. “The Games celebrate sport, community, diversity and peace,” Cr Dobie said.. “The Queen’s Baton Relay is a tradition that inspires community pride and excites people about the world-class festival of sports and culture to come. “Children will remember this event well into their adulthood, and will also take with them the joy and excitement of this worldclass sporting event. “Perhaps, there are children in our

With storm activity ramping up across parts of south-west Queensland, residents are being urged to prepare their properties now before severe weather hits. State Emergency Service (SES) Regional Manager Robert Bundy said most call-outs in the region were for property damage, such as leaking roofs or damage caused by branches or debris. “Storms can hit at any time, and we’ve already seen storms bring heavy rain, strong winds and even hail in some parts of the region so it’s important to be prepared now,” Mr Bundy said. “In the 2015/16 storm season there were 320 call-outs for structural damage in south-west Queensland alone - one of the highest in the state. “This improved to 117 call outs during last year’s storm season, so this year we’re urging residents to remain proactive and do regular checks around their property to prepare their homes for heavy rain and severe weather.” Mr Bundy said there were a number of simple steps residents could take to minimise the impact of storms and severe weather. “Full gutters can cause rain water to back up into eaves, causing leaks in heavy downpours and putting strain on your roof,” he said. “Residents should clean out their gutters, and check their roofs and eaves.” For more information on preparing for storm season visit www.getready.qld. gov.au ●

BARNABY’S BACK IN THE FOLD BY JEREMY SOLLARS Barnaby Joyce has been returned to office as the Federal Member for New England - which takes in the Tenterfield region - following a by-election last weekend triggered by the dual citizenship saga. Mr Joyce’s former New Zealand dual citizenship forced him to resign as an MP and as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Agriculture in late October. Counting of final votes in the New England by-election was still going at time of printing of the Free Times this week, but political analysts expected him to win a primary vote of around 64 per cent, up from 52.3 per cent at the last federal election. The seat of New England was last week contested by no less than 17 candidates. But Mr Joyce was easily the most highprofile of the 17 candidates running, given that former member Tony Windsor chose

not to contest. His return to federal parliament will increase the Turnbull Government’s numbers in the House of Representatives to 75. His re-election comes as eight LNP federal members from Queensland announced last week that they would ‘brand’ themselves as Nationals candidates at the next federal election, to better deliver the Coalition’s political message to rural and regional Queensland voters. They include our local federal member for Maranoa David Littleproud, who has insisted the Coalition remains united in Queensland, but along with other regional federal MPs he is concerned the ‘regional message’ is getting lost in election campaigning primarily focused on large metropolitan cities. Local result yet to be declared Votes in the Queensland election held

on Saturday 25 November were still being finalised locally in our state seat of Southern Downs, at time of printing of the Free Times this week. Votes in the Queensland election held on Saturday 25 November were still being finalised locally in our state seat of Southern Downs at the start of this week, with LNP candidate James Lister officially declared our new MP on Monday, having won 41.2 per cent of the primary vote. The overall government situation in Queensland remained up in the air at the start of this week with vote counting in key marginal electorates around the state continuing. The ALP Government of Annastacia Palaszczuk was still being predicted to be returned, with at least 47 of the 93 seats in the Queensland Parliament. The LNP was predicted to win 38 seats. “Well this week marks the end, Week 10 of the Warwick Credit Union 10 Week Weight Loss Challenge I have been a part of at WIRAC. I survived! It has been the first time I have participated in anything like this before and it is safe to say that five months ago I would have packed it in after the first week! The staff at WIRAC - Carla, Amy, Alex and Sophie are very motivating and made it easier to stick to and complete with their constant encouragement and words of support. At the start of the challenge I weighed in at 106.1kg, after already losing 23kg on my weight loss journey. Now at the end of the challenge weighing in at 94.3kg I have smashed a personal goal of getting down to double digits. With some of my other goals in sight I am going to continue to exercise three to four times a week. I now find myself looking forward to going to the gym, not because it is easy but because of the way I feel when I walk out - accomplished and proud (and quite often sore!). My total weight loss to date is 35kg and I couldn’t be prouder of how far I have come. Adding regular exercise into the mix has definitely improved my quality of life and helps give that weight loss a nudge along.

Local talent will take to the stage to entertain the crowd with an exciting line-up of Christmas songs and old favourites from 6.30pm. Warwick is also set for a night of wonderful entertainment this Sunday, 10 December, thanks to support from Creed and Lang, Southern Downs Automotive and Warwick Credit Union. Aimee Liesegang, Kristy Searson, The Fern Brothers, Emma Bell, Chapter 3 and trio Keely, Tegan and Erin Hilton will take

centre stage at Leslie Park from 4.30pm to sing their way through a full program of both traditional and up-beat carols. Warwick City Band and Warwick Choral Society will warm up the crowd when they perform prior to the main stage program. The man himself, Santa Claus, will take time out of his busy schedule for Carols in the Park, dropping in to both Stanthorpe and Warwick to visit the community. A great night out for the whole family, there will be plenty of food and drink available at the alcohol free, family event, so grab a picnic blanket, settle in and make a night of it. ●

Roasting tips ... Judging your roast’s degree of doneness using a meat thermometer. The internal temperature of the meat should be: Rare 55-60C, Medium - 65-70C, Well done - 75C. You can also use tongs to test the roast’s doneness. Gently prod or squeeze the roast - rare is very soft, medium rare is soft, medium is springy but soft, medium well is firm and well done is very firm. Test the beef roast just before the estimated cooking time is up. Check the internal temperature of the meat just before the estimated cooking time is up. Take larger roasts out of the oven just short of the goal, as the larger roasts and bone-in roasts tend cook further and go up just a little in temperature as they rest.

Minted lamb roast with ricotta and pea salad Nothing quite matches the flavour of lamb, its taste and tenderness make it a much-loved choice, particularly in spring. This recipe teams new season lamb with other spring favourites like sugar snap peas and young pea sprouts with luscious results. Preparation Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 70 minutes · 1 tbsp mint jelly · Half cup vegetable stock · 100g sugar snap peas · 2 baby cos lettuce, cut into bite-size pieces · 200g ricotta

refresh with cold water. Toss together with lettuce, ricotta and sprouts. Drizzle sugar snap mixture with dressing. 3. Carve the lamb, pour over juices then sprinkle with mint. Serve with the salad. Suggested roasting times per 500g for lamb: Lamb loin (boned and rolled), leg or shoulder (bone-in), easy carve leg or shoulder Cook at 180°C. Rare 20-25 min, Medium 25-30 min, Well done 30-35 min Roasts need to rest for about 10 to 20 minutes before carving. This gives the juices in the meat a chance to redistribute, giving a moister and more tender result. ●

DANGER DURANTAS ADAPT WELL TO MOST ENVIRONMENTS BY BEATRICE HAWKINS As I have travelled about lately, I have seen many beautiful specimens of duranta bushes flourishing in a wide range of soil types and climates. I’ve seen them thriving in Tamworth and Moree; a friend has a row growing on the eastern side of his house in a western area of our state, and I saw some really large specimens in the Brisbane city centre, so they obviously are very adaptable to a wide range of climates, soil types and temperature ranges. The ones out west are subjected to extreme heat and also some frosts while Brisbane provides an almost tropical climate and rainfall and a good deal of pollution in the area where I saw them. Although they are said to be frost tender they do really well in Tamworth, and from experience Tamworth can be subjected to very hard frosts. Perhaps, protection until established is the answer.

Given this wide variety of environments I thought I needed to research these plants a little, and in doing so have found that they are a member of the same family as Lantana, and we would all be aware of what an environmental disaster that can become if left unchecked. Durantas are native to Mexico, South America and the Caribbean. The older, common varieties of duranta have been recognised as an environmental problem for northern NSW and south eastern Queensland having for a long time been recorded as early as 1931. The berries that the plant produces are highly toxic to humans and animals, especially cats, dogs and small children, but most birds seem to be immune, so spread the seeds via their droppings. They are difficult to remove as any pieces of root left can sprout and grow. The beautiful hybrids don’t seem to have the same propensity to become a problem. They can grow up half a metre per year

and to 6 metres tall and similarly wide. They can also be pruned successfully to maintain height, shape and provide a dense shrub. They come in a wide variety of forms and flower colours and a golden-leaved form makes a lovely hedge. They need full

sun to get the best golden colour, but look good as a specimen plant, in a pot or almost anywhere you have space. They also can be grown as a standard and look spectacular. I told you all last week that I would be honest about the prickly cucumber I put in the garden. Well, if anyone would like some plants, I have hundreds! I think every seed must have germinated and I have already given a great many away and still have about 100 excess to requirements. They are absolutely flourishing. I don’t know when I have seen anything grow so fast. Lots of fun to see the very visible progress each day, but unfortunately I can only keep a few. There is after all, a limit to the number I and my neighbours can use! Don’t forget the bus trip to the Garden Expo at Doomben in March. A ticket for this day trip would make a great Christmas present for any garden-minded friend or family member and are available at Danny Lyons store. ●

THE SPIN

SMITH, CRONK AND SLATER SHOW ENDS The second Test hangs neatly in the balance as we roll out this edition of Spin. The Adelaide “pink ball" test is proving to be a winner. The ground record and sell out crowd for day one seemed unfazed by the un-Adelaide like conditions - freezing cold and showery as play got underway. I’ve now ticked off the Adelaide Cricket Test off the bucket list, and I can definitely say I was not disappointed. Well, perhaps I could have ordered better conditions. I am sure I have only ever been colder on the sidelines at Sullivan Oval in the middle of July. The revamped Adelaide Oval is not only a joy for spectators, but also players and commentators. I had the chance to chat with Ian Healy prior to the ground opening on day one, and he certainly sings the praises of the ground as a commentator. It now rates as one of the top three in the world. The Poms, and there were a lot of them in Adelaide are in love with the ground with many seasoned world cricket travellers labelling it the best in the world for spectators and far superior to some of the most iconic English grounds (Lords included). Having said that while there is a lot of Bradman aura associated with the ground, it does not have the tradition associated with its English counterparts. However, it is wonderful to see firsthand some green grass remaining at a major venue and also the original scoreboard. While play continued at ground level and the balance of the game tipped from Smith’s men to thee Poms, a host of spectators (not this one) took the opportunity to do the roof climb at the Oval and enjoy one of the most spectacular views of the game imaginable from atop the Oval grandstand. It was from there that the Qantas choir belted out a spine tingling, “I still call Australia Home" and Australian national anthem. It set the tone for the game. As we head into day four, how this game plays out is still anyone's guess. Smith and the Aussies have the upper hand, but the Poms struck back late on day three and there will be more twist in the tail or tale of this game before it is over. Adelaide you were great - my message to cricket lovers - this is a must do. Now what’s next on the cricket bucket list? - Casey KANGAROOS AND JILLAROOS RULE Rugby League fans have been treated to a real smorgasbord of excitement throughout the World Cup culminating with wins for both the Jillaroos and Kangaroos. The Jillaroos made sure they sent their retiring stars out with a worthy World Cup win in what was a classic game. Anyone who watched the game will tell you these women play for keeps and some of the hits would not have been out of place in the men’s game. The speed and skill level of these players is worth watching, and I am sure their performances will only enhance the position of women’s rugby league. On paper and before the game, many were predicting the Men’s final would see a blow out win to the Aussies. We have come to expect a great deal from Wayne Bennett-coached sides over the years, and this English side was no exception. The Kangaroos were pushed all the way, and in a good old-fashioned struggle the only points were scored early in the first half when Cordner barged over for the Kangaroos. The flood gates however did not spring open as anticipated. In the trade mark style of a Bennett-coached side, the Poms defended and defended and then defended their line some more. The unwavering defence from both sides resulted in tries being butchered by both 22 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

|

Let the fun begin - 'Day One, Ball One' of the first 'Pink Ball' Ashes Test. teams. Few would have predicted a six-nil score line. Australian and former Maroons coach Mal Meninga continues his amazing run with representative sides, and the Kangaroos have kept his unbeaten run intact and retained the World Cup. For Cooper Cronk, it was an ideal time to announce his retirement from representative football, and so brings to a close the end of the amazing Smith, Cronk and Slater show. How lucky have we been to see three once-in-a-lifetime players combine at club, state and international level. Whether or not you bleed Maroon, follow the Storm or support the Green and Gold, you cannot be anything but inspired by these remarkable players as individuals and as a collective. In many ways, they have changed the game. They have set their own lofty standards, led by example but who it seems have managed to remain those three very normal Queensland kids who had a chance and took it. PROBLEMS NOT JUST HOME GROWN At a time when most sporting codes appear to be struggling for numbers in country and city areas, it became apparent to me that this is not just a local, state or national issue after speaking to a number of visitors in Adelaide for the Test. The Poms are finding exactly the same problems at village, district and country level in cricket. But not just cricket - the number of rugby league teams in the north, the heartbeat of rugby league in England is also on the decline. It seems that even numbers in soccer/football are not as strong as several years ago. Many of those I spoke to hold well-founded concerns for the future of some of those magnificent county grounds with their amazing scoreboards and white picket fences. The thing that everyone seems to agree on is that if teams fail to form for a season, they are doomed and will become extinct. Unused grounds gobbled up for other purposes. The problems of youth involvement in team sport, youth retention and sourcing willing club volunteers are the exact same problems the Poms are grappling with. NUMBERS PLEASING Organisers were pleased to see a good roll up for the association croquet games early last week. As a result of the better numbers, three separate games are played.

Thursday, 7 December, 2017

The Barmy Army had their banners in position early on day one in Adelaide - the Aussies kept them pretty quiet for the best part of the first three days. Pat Schnoor partnered Val Shepherd for 23-14 win over the combination of Carol Verwey and Grace Howard. Jenny Tunbridge and Val Richardson played Joy Newman and score to win in a very tight game. The final score 14-13. In the third game, Margaret Dickenson and Peter Tunbridge for a 12-9 win over Andrea Denkewitz and Effey Russell. There was a very small turnout for the games ricochet on Thursday morning. Seems there may have been quite a few people preparing for the Christmas luncheon which was also on Thursday. Those who were there enjoyed a good game where new recruit Bron Southgate showed remarkable improvement. She partnered Sharyn Roser, however it was the more experienced pairing of Andrea Denkewitz and Jenny Tunbridge who took the honours 22 hoops to 16. Seven players were in action on Friday at the gateball games and despite some changes in playing personnel throughout the morning, Team one scored a clean sweep of wins. In the opening game, Margaret Dickenson, Sharyn Roser and John Draper combined to form team one and played Andrea Denkewitz, Pat Schnoor and Joy Newman, Team Two. Les Williams refereed the opening game which was comfortably won by Team One - the final score 15-10. On the final turn of the game, Margaret Dickenson showed her experience scoring

the winning points with a couple of gates and an agari. In game two, John Draper took over the refereeing duties while Les Williams took his vacated place in Team One. It was another win to that team - the scores 11-8 at the end of play. In the next game, Andrea took over the refereeing duties and team one managed a 13-10 victory. For the final game, it was Margaret Dickenson doing the referee, with her place in the side taken by Andrea Denkewitz. John Draper sealed another win for Team One after making two Agaris. STEELING A SPORTERS WIN Tony Steele claimed a win at Sporters last Sunday and relegated Rod Pettiford to the runners-up spot. Mark Lynam and Ray Thorn figured prominently in the run downs while it was Matt Waterworth who posted the Bet Gross Score of thee morning. Waterworth also grabbed the pin shot on the third. Mark Lynam made the pro pin his own. Rod Pettiford made up for finishing just off the pace by sneaking off with a meat tray. David McPaul was seen leaving with the second tray. Sporters organisers are hoping to see a big roll up of regulars for the Christmas party on Sunday. The festivities will get underway early with a barbecue brekkie getting things underway around 7am prior to tee off. Not sure if Santa and his boomers will be making an appearance on some of those back holes. Guess you will just have to get along there and see. freetimes.com.au

WHEATVALE BACK IN FORM Following a disappointing loss last week Wheatvale bounced back to their best, posting a decisive win over Redbacks in the weekend’s cricket fixtures. The game which was scheduled for Mayhew Oval was transferred to Queens Park after there were issues with the pitch. Wheatvale set thee Redbacks a sizeable total of 231. In a far better team performance, Wheatvale’s Chris Malone topped the batting with 98 runs. Carter Billborough also added a handy 38 to the total. Andrew Politch 2/29 and Justin Wheeler 2/45 finished the innings with the best bowling figures. Redbacks would not be pleased with their performance in the field after grassing as many as nine catches in the innings. That sort of fielding form makes winning matches at any level difficult. In reply, Redbacks were all out for 178. Tyhe Clarkson top scored with 47 and Drewery added 29 after taking 1/45 in the field. The strong partnerships Redbacks needed to reel in the required target deserted them in this game, thanks to some good bowling performances from Wheatvale. Malone starred with the ball as well as the bat taking 2/16. It was an impressive team performance with the ball from thee Wheatvale bowlers. The Breen brothers and Rylie and Hayden Doherty also taking two wickets each. Hayden Doherty ensured there was no sting in the Redback’s tail taking 2/1 from just four balls late in the innings as Redbacks were dismissed for 178 well short of the required total. In a tight game at Slade Oval on Saturday, Maryvale held their nerve to score a one run win over Warwick Hotel Colts. Lachlan Gross has been one of the mainstays of the Colts side again this season, and on Saturday in a total of 191 contributed 53 runs. Will Gordon starred with the bat for Maryvale, posting the top score of 60. It was another solid performance Maryvale who reached the required target with two wickets in hand continuing their impressive performance this season. In the game at Allora, Rascals set their home town opponents a 182-run chase. Paul Christensen top scored for Rascals with 60 runs. Jon Millard (40) also got among the runs. The bet bowling performance for Allora came from Willie Ole who finished with 4/31 from his eight-over spell. In reply, Allora Matt Kiernan top scored for Allora posting 31 runs, but the Rascals bowlers had the upper hand. Tom Morris, Jamie Holmes and Brad Johnson each took a pair as Allora was dismissed relatively cheaply for 132. POPULARITY OF DELANEY FAMILY DAY CONTINUES The Delaney Family recently sponsored the

CASEY O’CONNOR

The Adelaide Oval upgrade has met with strong approval from cricket fans around the world - great to see the iconic original scoreboard has been left in situ.

Former Australian wicket keeper Ian Healy gets up close and personal with the 'Pink Ball' before play on day one. annual 4BBB Medley Stableford competition in honour of their father Kev Delaney. The competition now in its 21st year, saw a fantastic field of 60 golfers turned out in an effort to this much-sought after trophy and the raft of prizes up for grabs. The winner was the all-girl team of Tracey Spinetti and Justine Washbourne. Runners-up were Ken Hinze and Ian Henderson. Last weekend the December Monthly Medal was decided, and another excellent field was out on the course. The winner of the first Monthly Medal of the new season and starting off the year on the right note was the Men’s winner Matt Waterworth. Waterworth’s purple patch of recent form saw him take out the Medal after a countback. Neta Thouard has also been in good touch in recent rounds, and she took out the Ladies event. WHERE ARE YOU NOW? The call has gone out to former senior Wattles players “Where are you now?" Players from across the years are urged to register their name and current town of residence with the club. There are two major celebrations planned for the club in 2018. The first, the '100th Anniversary of the Birth of Rugby League in the Allora area' and while 2018 marks Wattles 53rd year, the club is planning on celebrating and reuniting for the clubs '50th Anniversary’. History shows that Wattles did not become Wattles until 1969 after a

competition to “give the club a name" was organised by Mal Eiby. The “Greens” as they were known in the club’s early days had their beginnings as Allora-Clifton and ran on in their first official club fixture in the Warwick District Rugby League competition on 27 March, 1966 against Millmerran at Allora. A game which they won. The Allora-Clifton side that played the first grade match that day were Tony Cartwright, Mal Henry, Des Cantwell, Rob Lester, Stuart. Sparksman, Bevan Crothers, Barry Donegan, Ted Cowley, Dave Achilles, Des Power, Tom Zeller, Russell Cass, Kev Smith (Captain). Allora-Clifton only played one season, 1966, in the Warwick District competition, before being admitted to the Toowoomba Rugby League in 1967. Organisers of the proposed celebrations now have the big task of locating as many past players, administrators, sponsors, princesses/ambassadors and volunteers as possible. If you know of or are a former Wattles player, post their details on the club’s Facebook page or alternatively contact Glyn Rees the club president. It matters little if you played one game in any senior grade or a hundred games, or a volunteer in any role, the club is looking for you. CAMPBELL - A PORSCHE MAN Matt Campbell has put in the hard yards in motor sport, and is now reaping the rewards. The young Warwick driver this week announced he has signed a new deal with Porsche that will see him remain with the team for the coming year. The deal will see Campbell taking the next step up the Porsche ladder. He will move from the junior drivers programme to a young professional where he will be behind the

wheel of a GT-style car, as well as racing across custom cars at different venues around the world. He is expecting to race at tracks throughout Europe and perhaps America after a very successful break out season for the manufacturer. It has been a dream year for the young man who cut his racing teeth in Warwick. In addition to his success with Porsche, he also had success in the V8s this season. Campbell added a fifth placing at Bathurst and a podium finish Gold Coast to his impressive racing resume. HAYNE PLANE FLIES SOUTH Well it has been confirmed. The Hayne plane has transferred from the Titans hangar to Parramatta, but not before reportedly picking up another wad of cash from the club that gave him a home a little over a year ago. Titans fans are entitled to be asking for someone at the club to held accountable for the Hayne debacle that has seen their coach shown the door. Surely there are some execs and board members with a fair wad of egg on the face. Hayne is reportedly forgoing a lot of cash to return to his roots at Parramatta - can’t say that I hear many in the rugby league world mourning that. While Brad Arthur might be responsible for bringing their prodigal son home, I hope he also asked him to pack his intent. I doubt I have watched a more lacklustre performance by a talented player than watching Hayne go through the motions for Fiji - the country he chose to play for in the World Cup. There is one positive the Titans can now get on with building a football side around players who want to be at the club and will be prepared to “put in" every week. Let’s hope we can see the best of them in 2018. ●
