Lakeside Square has an abundance of Christmas activities to keep the kids amused this festive season.

Get a selfie with Santa The festive season has well and truly arrived at Lakeside Square Pakenham with Santa and his elves ready to spread the Christmas cheer.

It all kicks off on Saturday 9 December with children invited to get their creativity flowing by either writing a letter or drawing a picture for Santa before the shopping centre mails them directly to the North Pole.

In this free activity, all participants will receive a reply from Mr Claus in time for Christmas.

The Christmas celebrations continue on Saturday 16 December with shoppers invited to welcome Santa, his musical elves and Frosty

the Snowman in the Lakeside Square Christmas parade.

Guests will even get the chance to meet and snap a selfie with Santa himself and recieve some free face painting.

From 11am to 2pm, Santa will be at the centre with his elves ready to snap a photo with customers on their phones or cameras and will even be handing out some sweet treats to everyone he meets.

The Pakenham community will come together on Saturday 9 December for the town’s annual carols by candlelight.

Mayor Collin Ross said the council was once again proud to present the popular event, with the support of local businesess and community groups.

“Cardinia Shire families are in for a tremendous free evening of festive entertainment," Cr Ross said.

Accompanied by a community choir, the 30-piece Cardinia Civic Concert Band will again be playing a selection of classic and much-loved Christmas tunes.

For many, the highlight of the night will be when Santa makes his grand appearance and witnessing the dazzling fireworks display, which will officially conclude the evening’s activities.

“This time of year is for celebrating and taking stock of the year that has been, what matters to you most and preparing for the new year ahead.

“As we join together to share in the spirit of

the season, we are reminded of life’s most important things – family, friends, health, wellbeing and community."

Carols by Candlelight will be held at Toomuc Reserve, Princes Highway, Pakenham.

Gates open at 6pm and entertainment from local schools kicks off at 7pm.

Fireworks will cap off the carols festivities.

Racing club crowd The Pakenham Racing Club (PRC) is expecting a major crowd on hand to experience the 2017 Sportsbet Pakenham Cup Day at its state-ofthe-art racing venue this Saturday, 9 December.

A crowd of more than 8000 people is anticipated to flock to the PRC following presales of more than 1000 hospitality packages and advance sales of general admissions also proving very popular.

“With the prizemoney on offer reaching almost one million, the raceday once again being granted standalone Metropolitan status, and the ideal timing in early December for end of year functions, it’s the perfect combination to see the event build from strength to strength since the new track opened two years ago,” PRC Business Development Manager Wade Calderwood said.

“A big part of what attracts both locals and racegoers from across the region is the relaxed country-style atmosphere mixed with quality metro-style racing and facilities.

"We are seeing more and more interest from businesses, sporting groups and other organisations who earmark this weekend to celebrate their end-of-year and Christmas functions.”

Inspire Pilates for Women Fashions on the Field will also provide plenty of entertainment for all the fashionistas on the day.

Fashion categories include Lady of the Day, Mature Lady of the Day, Best Dressed Gentleman and Best Millinery.

Registrations will commence from 11am and will be open until 1.30pm at the Inspire Fashions marquee.

Other activities on the day to keep the big crowd entertained include the live music, Christmas celebrations, and even a visit from Santa.

Heritage hit

The Pakenham Cup is back this Saturday, 9 December.

As part of the service offering, the club will once again enlist the help of Pakenham Rotary which will shuttle racegoers from the carparks to the main gate, which proved to be a huge hit at last year’s event.

There is also a complimentary shuttle bus service that will run from Club Officer, Cardinia Club and Pakenham Train Station, as

well as meeting every V/Line train that stops at Tynong.

A continuous loop will leave the track at the end of the day, with the last bus to depart the venue at approximately 6.30pm.

With all hospitality packages now sold out, general admission tickets are still available via www.pakenhamracing.com.au.

The festive season is set to hit Heritage Springs on Saturday with the return of the annual Heritage Springs Residents Group Christmas party.

As president of the Heritage Springs Residents Group Ron Pushman explained, the party is set to be held at Henry Lawson Boulevard’s ‘Duck Pond’ within the Heritage Springs Estate.

The day will feature a jumping castle, face painting, sausage sizzle and exciting raffles for the local residents and children to enjoy.

“Santa will be arriving in his big red truck later in the afternoon with the SES showing off their orange rescue truck between 3pm and 4pm,” Ron said.

Ron also explained that the party would serve as an ideal opportunity to publicly thank the group’s sponsors and supporters for their generous donations towards the party.

The Heritage Springs Residents Group Christmas party will run from 2pm to 5pm at the ‘Duck Pond’ on Henry Lawson Boulevard, Heritage Springs.

Jan’s full ration of love

By Narelle Coulter Jan Ketcher’s unit is filled with the sweet aroma of baking fruit cake.

Jan grabs a tea-towel and slides the cooked cake out of the oven. It is perfectly browned on top, a few black currants poking up from the golden crust.

Another cake rests on the sideboard wrapped in tin foil.

Each Christmas Jan bakes three cakes - one she will ice with marzipan to have with family on Christmas day, one to give to a friend and one for herself.

Her cakes, she explains, are “quite rich” being packed with one-and-a-half kilograms of mixed fruit.

“I like a piece of cake Boxing Day morning with a cup of tea - disgusting!” Jan said with a wicked grin.

At 83 Jan loves Christmas as much now as she did as a child.

Jan grew up in war-time London and moved to Australia with her husband Ed and four children in the early 1970s.

She was born in Twickenham and her childhood Christmas memories are intertwined with those of air raid sirens, black-out curtains and ration coupons.

Jan was five when war broke out. Her father was in the navy serving on a destroyer. He saw six years of active service. For three years his young family didn’t see him at all.

“Food was short. I remember one Christmas having roast rabbit for Christmas dinner but we enjoyed it,” said Jan. “Gifts were small. As kids we got things like books, knitted gloves, a small bar of chocolate.

Sometimes an orange, but they were rationed during the war.

London-born Jan Ketcher has experienced Christmas in both hemispheres. 175395 “We did have Christmas cake but it was a very light fruit cake and very small. And it wasn’t iced. You couldn’t ice cakes during the war. Not even wedding cakes had icing.”

She remembers making paper chains to string up as decorations.

“Those years were hard but everyone was in the same boat. We didn’t think anything of it.

We weren’t scared. My mum must have been but she didn’t show it.”

In the 1950s when Britain shrugged off its war-time austerity, Christmas also took on a fresh sparkle.

“After the war Christmas became more elaborate. The black-out curtains were gone then and people put up more decorations in

their windows.”

Jan remembers being delighted if it snowed in London in December and still misses the Salvation Army choirs singing carols on street corners.

After school and secretarial work, Jan eventually pursued her dream of becoming a nurse.

She and Ed met at a hospital dance.

Struggling to make ends meet in 1970s Britain, they decided to migrant to Australia in 1971.

“We were fed up struggling to pay the bills.

It was very difficult. We managed, but only just. We realised Australia offered a better opportunity for our children and it has.

“The six of us got on a plane and we didn’t really know what we were coming to.”

“I saw it as a challenge and an adventure.”

The Ketchers’ first Aussie Christmas in 1971 was “blistering hot“. They were living in Nangana at the time. They later moved to Emerald and then Narre Warren.

“We went to my cousin’s house and had a barbecue. It was totally different but we really enjoyed it.

“My husband loved his hot Christmas dinner so he wasn’t too happy. But it was his birthday in April so I said ‘I’ll do you a hot roast dinner for your birthday instead’.

This Christmas Jan will join her extended family at her daughter’s house in the country.

In the corner of her tidy unit is a sparsely decorated tree. Next to is a carefully arranged nativity scene which has been in the family for more than 30 years.

Each year Jan picks a theme for her Christmas wrapping. This year it’s gold.

“I’m like a big kid. I get so excited the kids say to me ‘oh mum, there’s still a week to go,’ but I can’t sleep. I just love it.”

Sewing stitched up This year marks the exciting milestone of 30 years in business for the Sewing Connection’s Sue and Sandy.

Over their three decades, the dynamic duo have remained at the forefront of everything patchwork and sewing machines and have become renowned for their after-sales service and knowledgeable instruction.

Their local staff Jenny, Janene, Ash, Leanne and Val are always there to assist customers on their journey, whether it be a patchwork project, a new sewing machine or overlocker.

“Sewing Connection is a treasure trove of patchwork fabrics, accessories, haberdashery, wool patterns, Bernina and Brother sewing machines, embroidery machines, and overlockers,” Sandy said.

“When you walk in the door, the wonderful samples take you on a journey of discovery.

(We also have) a large classroom space where different workshops and classes are held.”

As well as weekly and monthly classes and groups, the Sewing Connections hosts worldrenowned art quilters every year including Caroline Sharkey, Gloria Loughman and Sue Devanny.

All classes are listed on their website and currently include a summer school program in January.

“Christmas specials are available now and the backroom/ garage sales starts on 27 December if you are looking for a bargain,” Sandy said.

Santa will give his reindeers a rest on Saturday 23 December and instead drive into Main Street, Pakenham, on the back of a horsedrawn carriage.

Santa will spread Christmas cheer from 11am until noon as he makes his way along Rogers Street, down to Drake Lane and up Main Street.

Elves and the Gazette’s Wally Wombat will hand out treats along the way, and carollers will sing Christmas carols.

At noon Santa and his trusty steed will go to Bourke Park where Santa will be available for photos and everyone can get a chance to see the horse and carriage up close.

During the event shoppers have the chance to win prizes in 10 raffles. Products and vouchers from the shop owners on Santa’s route will be up for grabs.

Proceeds from the raffles, which will be drawn at 1pm, will go to Mill Valley Ranch, which is providing the horse and carriage.

Mill Valley, which this year celebrated its 50th anniversary, used proceeds from last year’s raffles to host underprivileged children at the camp.

With less than three weeks until Christmas, Australia Post will keep post office doors open longer as it moves into its busiest period of the year.

Residents in Pakenham can visit their local post office during the extended retail hours of 9am – 6pm Monday to Friday and 9am – 1pm Saturday; and extended parcel hatch access 7am – 6.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am – 1pm Saturday, until 22 December.

Victoria state manager David Allen said the extended trading hours would provide customers more choice and convenience to send and receive their Christmas gifts in time for the big day.

“We know people are busy at this time of year, so we’re giving our customers more options to prepare for the festive season,” Mr Allen said.

“We predict this Christmas will be our busiest yet. Last year we delivered more than 34 million parcels over the Christmas period, a record we expect to break this year.

“We’re also making it easier for our customers to choose how their items are delivered.

We’ve introduced an SMS notification service for parcel deliveries. On the morning of delivery, customers will receive a text message with the option of having the driver leave the parcel at a safe location at their home, confirm they will be home or deliver directly to a post office if no-one is home.

“Customers can also take advantage of our parcel delivery services by opting to have their parcels sent to any one of our free 24/7 parcel lockers (available in over 280 locations), to a post office of their choice, or to a PO Box.”

“We don’t put any guidelines or criteria on it because you can’t say to one person they can’t come, and then welcome another in. There’s no segregation there.

“It’s just a wonderful, wonderful day.”

The kitchen facilities at the Pakenham Seniors’ hall are utilised for the massive logistical exercise on the day, with the meat and the po-

tatoes then transported down to the public hall.

“As soon as we found out about it we immediately jumped on board - we’re a communitybased organisation and I don’t think anyone should be hungry or lonely on Christmas Day,” said Norm Davidson, the manager of the Pakenham Bendigo Bank branch in Main Street.

“It’s one day of the year where people should feel welcomed, involved, and part of the community. Christmas Day is one of those days, and I just take my hat off to the volunteers.

That’s the simple, heartfelt message from Sue Johns from the Pakenham Op Shop in the lead-up to the Cardinia Community Christmas - a free Christmas Day lunch for all in the community, regardless of background or personal circumstance.

The lunch will be held at the Pakenham Public Hall next to the library on Christmas Day. Those wishing to attend need to register by close of business on Friday 15 December with either the Main Street’s Bendigo Bank branch, Terry’s Discount Store, the Pakenham Op Shop, or Living and Learning Inc. Sue, along with great friend Win Reed, are two of the tireless volunteers who donate their time on Christmas Day to make sure no-one in the local community is made to feel left out or isolated.

In the weeks leading up to the event - which is sponsored by a range of local organisations including the Cardinia Shire Council, the op shop, and the Bendigo Bank - there has been a gift drive for those who attend the Christmas lunch.

About 200 people, including volunteers, attended last year’s event and Sue is expecting more this year.

She and Win are blown away that the Bendigo Bank stepped forward to get behind the cause this year. The Main Street branch has been inundated with presents - provided by customers, employees, and even those with no direct connection to the bank.

“That community spirit is just absolutely wonderful. To me, giving is everything,” Sue said.

Haileybury College has also stepped forward to support the cause.

“The bank has a gift tree, which is just fabulous, and the community has been so generous in putting gifts under it,” Sue said.

“We did ask for presents for the older generation (too) - things they can use.”

Sue said the ratio of those attending the Community Christmas in the past tended to be 60 per cent women, 40 per cent men. Every Tuesday and Thursday she visits Bourke Park near the train station to visit those doing it tough, and to put them on the registration list for the lunch.

“We keep the door open - we don’t keep anybody out, because we make sure we’ve got enough to cater,” she said.

Robbers are not welcome

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Three ex-Dandenong men armed with a shotgun and machetes during a terrifying earlymorning robbery of a Narre Warren servo have been chided by a judge for abusing Australia’s hospitality.

Regan Augustine, 19, and Padiet Deng, 19, brandished “very nasty-looking” machetes one that was 36 centimetres long with a serrated edge - during the hold-up about 3.50am on 23 February.

Poulios Awo, 22, held a double-barrelled, 12-gauge shotgun.

It was not loaded, but that was not apparent to the servo’s petrified staff, Judge Frances Ho-

gan of the Victorian County Court noted.

CCTV footage of the masked robbers was a “picture of chilling menace,” Judge Hogan said.

One of the attendants fled out the door, screaming for help at a nearby roundabout. He flagged down a motorist, asking them to stay with him because he was so afraid.

The other staff-member hid behind the counter in vain. He pleaded: “Please brother, don’t hurt me. I have a family”.

The robbers stole more than $500 cash from the till and more than $6000 worth of cigarettes.

Half an hour later, they attempted a similar

armed robbery of three staff at a Glen Waverley newsagency.

All three offenders, equally culpable for the crimes, grew up in conflict, violence and fear in their African homelands, Judge Hogan noted.

“It is an irony that having been granted asylum as a refugee in this country you should then commit acts of brazen violence that disturb the peaceful dignity of others, causing them to fear for their safety.

“Each one of you should be deeply, deeply ashamed for the serious abuse of hospitality ... shown to you in Australia which has provided refuge for you and your families.

“Your appalling conduct has caused ongoing adverse psychological consequences for five citizens who were simply going about their business earning a living.”

Judge Hogan also noted the prevalence of armed robberies on “soft targets” who work late at night and early in the morning.

“They are crimes of a deeply unsettling and anti-social manner and breed feelings of fear and insecurity in the community.”

Awo - the oldest offender but with the lesser criminal history - was jailed for three years, with an 18-month non-parole period.

Augustine and Deng were sentenced to three years in a youth justice centre.

‘Smarter commute’ on the way for Monash sufferers

By Brendan Rees Six large gantries carrying electronic signs were installed last week as part of the $400 million Monash Freeway upgrade to ease congestion and create a “smarter commute.”

Minister for Roads and Roads Safety Luke Donnellan, who made the upgrade announcement in Berwick on Friday 1 December, said a further 44 gantries would be installed with overhead electronic signs to change speed limits and close lanes in the event of an incident.

The biggest of the gantries is 61 metres long and weighs 40 tonnes.

“These gantries will form part of a massive, interconnected system that will reduce crashes on the freeway, improve incident response and safe travel time,” he said.

“What we’re looking for is the sweet spot, so we don’t have the stop-start patterns.”

“We’re getting the Monash Freeway upgrade done, delivering extra lanes and smarter freeway system to get people home safer and sooner,” Mr Donnellan said.

He said more than 70,000 tonnes of asphalt had been laid to create 30 kilometres of new lanes, with 35 kilometres of fibre optic cable installed for the smart technology.

Mr Donnellan said five gantries had been installed between Warrigal Road and Pakenham, adding the upgrade would be completed mid to late next year.

“More than 20 smaller cantilever gantries on freeway entry ramps will hold traffic signals to automatically manage the number of cars entering the freeway.”

Last month marked one year of major construction on the freeway upgrade.

Mr Donnellan said the latest freeway management technology and an extra lane in each direction would mean a “safer and more reliable” journey for the more than 200,000 drivers that use the Monash Freeway.

Asked if the yellow lines on the Monash Freeway during the upgrade were causing confusion for drivers, Mr Donnellan said there might be some “difficulty” but it was part of a “temporary exercise.”

“There hasn’t been an increase in the number of accidents on the road. It’s the opposite

According to VicRoads data in the period of November and December 2016, there were five serious injury crashes and no fatal crashes on the stretch of the Monash Freeway between the Princes Highway and McGregor Road.

Shadow Minister for Roads David Hodgett said Mr Donnellan was “kidding himself” if he did not accept that the mix of white and yellow lines on the Monash Freeway was confusing for motorists.

“Although it’s conceivable that Luke Donnellan hasn’t experienced the issue, living in trendy Fitzroy and ignoring his electorate of

Narre Warren North, 40 kilometres away, he doesn’t battle the increasing congestion on the Monash Freeway every day.”

Maurice Blackburn road injuries lawyer Tamara Wright said the firm had a “few claims” with road accidents on the busy freeway, adding that motorists were confused with the yellow lines.

She said until 2012, the old white lines were removed with a high pressure hose or painted over to ensure there was only one set of lane lines.

“I’m sure the change was done for a good reason, but when we’ve got people that are

confused, we really have to question that ’is this the safest practice now?’.”

VicRoads South Eastern Project director Ray Paterson said crews would be working around the clock during the holiday period between Eastlink and South Gippsland Freeway.

“We’re getting a lot of work done while there is less traffic on the road over summer, and encourage drivers to plan ahead, allow extra travel time or seek alternative routes,” he said.

In the lead-up to Christmas, works will be carried out at night to get the surface of the freeway ready for its new top layer to be installed.

To those of us involved in almost daily battle with the Monash Freeway, the news of any works - the sense of any prospective relief - is as welcome as a cool summer’s breeze.

But as we look at the further works announced this week, we can only wonder - how can they find 10 metres of the thing that isn’t being worked on at the moment?

The general consensus is that congestion across the network has increased markedly over the past one to two months.

And the answer seems to be that it’s “disruptive works" - that is, the sheer size and scale of works across the road network - that are giving us the grief at the moment.

And that leads to more than a little suspicion over how well the current Monash works have been managed.

We can only drive for so long - looking longingly at new empty expanses of tarmac next to us, closed off, seemingly requiring not much more than linemarking - before we begin to smell a rat.

Surely, the fragile umbilical cord that connects us to the lifeblood of the city should be more robust than this.

Because that word - fragile - comes up increasingly in regards to the Monash these days.

It doesn’t even take an accident now.

One broken-down car in one lane at peak hour - sorry, make that peak hours - is enough to see the Monash wind to a standstill like an old mantle clock with a broken mainspring.

Rest assured, if those who made the decisions about the Monash drove it a bit more often, there would be a revolution.

Heat on hospital cladding

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Monash Health is set to remove flammable cladding from Casey Hospital but states the hospital is “safe to occupy”.

The cladding will be replaced from the main building facade, the sub-acute ward built in 2014 and an extension to the main building built in 2010.

According to the State Government, Casey and seven other hospitals with flammable cladding will be “brought into compliance” within 36 months.

Monash Health became aware of the issue at Casey Hospital in August after a review by an independent building surveyor, its spokes-

man said.

“An independent building surveyor and fire engineers have assessed the buildings and certified that they are safe to occupy.

“Works were immediately undertaken to reduce risk, including additional sprinkler installation.”

The hospital had already been protected by mandatory fire-safety features such as sprinklers and a fire alarm system.

“We will work with the Victorian Cladding Taskforce with any further audit process and implement any recommendations identified to ensure compliance is achieved,” the spokesman said.

There have also been 1400 buildings identi-

fied as “likely” to have the cladding by a Victorian Cladding Taskforce.

The cladding, described as aluminium composite panels with a polyethylene core or expanded polystyrene, came under the spotlight after a fire rapidly tore up the Lacrosse apartment building in Docklands in 2014.

Cladding was also blamed for the horrific Grenfell Tower fire in London in June, in which 79 people were killed.

Casey Council is set to audit six of its buildings for combustible cladding.

Casey’s city presentation manager David Richardson said the council was not aware of any of its facilities being fitted with non-compliant cladding.

The materials used at the recently opened Bunjil Place complied with Australian standards and Building Code of Australia requirements, Mr Richardson said.

“Council will audit our six public buildings that are two storeys and above for the noncompliant cladding in accordance with the Victorian Building Authority Requirements.

“The majority of council’s 360 buildings are single-storey and not impacted by the proposed audit.”

The State Government has directed the Victorian Building Authority to expand its inspections from government buildings to residential dwellings.

Art lovers flock to Bunjil in thousands for a fix of soul

By Cam Lucadou-Wells In an indication of Casey’s untapped love of the arts, Bunjil Place Gallery has been packing in visitors in its first month.

Since opening on 28 October, more than 13,000 have ventured into the gallery’s opening exhibition Designing Bunjil Place.

That’s well on track towards topping the gallery’s annual forecast of 50,000, says gallery director Georgia Cribb.

“We were always thinking big, but this gives us added confidence to continue our plan.

“What people are saying is how wonderful it is to have this in their backyard.”

The downside is for patrons, including the next-door Casey ARC visitors, who are still reporting the occasional parking crush.

Casey safer communities manager Caroline Bell said digital parking signage which went live on 4 December had caused a “marked im-

provement”. She said adjustments had been made to the car parking zones in the surrounding area.

Concerns from ARC visitors had dropped significantly, Ms Bell said.

An ARC patron said that parking had improved since Bunjil’s opening days. However, it was still hard to find a space during shows at Bunjil’s 800-seat theatre.

Casey active communities group manager James Rouse said there was much entertainment to look forward to in coming weeks, including Christmas themed events, the giant Christmas tree and nativity scene.

Running five exhibitions a year, the gallery’s aim is to showcase Casey artists, as well as national and international works.

Its next exhibition Let’s Play: the art of our time is a case in point, with more than 20 Australian and international artists on display.

It opens on 14 December.

On page 14 of the Berwick Star News of 30 November there is an item on protecting the character of Berwick’s “Hoddle grid”.

In Narre Warren, council is proposing an amendment to change a residential area from houses to four-storey blocks of units (Amendment C224).

Details of the residential area are on one page out of the 245 pages in the nine documents that make up the amendment.

Even this page contains conflicting information - for example a height limit of 13.5 metres is stated, then comes the phrase “13.5m height limit increased to 16m on Princes Highway frontage to limit overshadowing, overlooking and visual bulk issues.”

None of the documents include a map to clarify if the changes affect only the Princes Highway frontage or the whole of the residential area.

Casey Council should provide a separate document, as part of the amendment, giving details of the changes planned for the residential area including a map, planned building types (multi-storey) and planned timeline.

Residents have a right to be informed with clear, accurate information and not have to wade through 245 pages of documents.

A man with a “prolific” criminal history has been refused bail over a string of alleged thefts from cars.

Ryan Eyles, 19, was allegedly found with a black ‘Just Do It’ bag shortly after it was stolen from an unlocked car parked at a Cranbourne North home in the early hours of 27 November.

He faced a bail hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court the next day.

Eyles was arrested as he was about to leave in a taxi shortly after the alleged crime, informant Acting Sergeant Stuart Button told the court.

He had cards, sunglasses and jewellery allegedly stolen from a car parked at Cranbourne North, and bank cards from a car parked in Narre Warren South.

There were also other sunglasses, cash, cards and jewellery that were suspected as stolen, the court was told.

Eyles told police the items had been given to him by a “friend”.

After the police interview, he allegedly head-butted a hole in a police station wall.

At the time, he was on two counts of bail.

His criminal history included nine indictable offences while on bail since 2015, police

claimed. He had six previous theft-from-vehicle charges and four counts of handling proceeds of crime.

“He clearly hasn’t learnt his lesson,” Act Sgt Button said.

Eyles was also facing charges of a $132 petrol drive-off in Clyde in which his vehicle had a false number plate. At the time, his learner driver permit had allegedly expired.

Act Sgt Button said the unemployed Eyles was a heavy user of GHB and ice - though Eyles told the court he’d not used for “a period of time now”.

Eyles said he was looking for work, had stable accommodation, attended all his corrections appointments and had been signing up for rehab “today”.

“I have a good track record at court,” he said.

“I have shown remorse for everything I’ve done,” he tearfully added.

Magistrate Julie O’Donnell noted Eyles had a “prolific” criminal history and had re-offended while on a corrections order.

He was an unacceptable risk of re-offending and didn’t show cause for being released, Ms O’Donnell said.

Eyles was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 6 December.

The Casey version, proposed for the former civic centre site near Bunjil Place, would be smaller.

It was expected to be the size of Frankston’s sand-sculpture drawcard, which attracted “thousands” of visitors, proponent Cr Sam Aziz said.

The investment in the trip was “minimal” and “minuscule” compared to the ensuing economic benefits, he said.

He added that successful negotiations with Chinese governments and corporations required Casey to show ongoing commitment as well as consistent political representation.

Cr Smith - who will fly to Phoenix - was also part of the council delegation to China in April.

“Are we serious about China or are we not?”

Cr Aziz said.

The lantern festival was also expected to require “some financial support” from Casey as well as a suitable site, according to a council report.

Casey councillors are divided on a $5500 ratepayer-funded research trip to Arizona, USA in preparation for a proposed lantern festival in 2019.

The trip sends Cr Wayne Smith and the council’s China engagement officer to investigate the Phoenix Light and Lantern Festival for a week in the upcoming Christmas-New Year period.

It would also include Cr Smith addressing a graffiti and vandalism forum hosted by Phoenix Police.

The trip is estimated to cost $5500 in airfares, accommodation and car rental.

At a 5 December council meeting, mayor Geoff Ablett said the timing of the trip couldn’t be controlled - given the Phoenix festival runs from mid-November to 2 January.

It was “certainly not a junket” but was building on ties built with Sichuan Lantern Company during the council’s delegation to China earlier this year.

“It’s getting business to create jobs in Casey,” Cr Ablett said.

“The jobs we’re creating (about 150 a week in Casey) are getting snapped up. We need to do more.”

Dissenting councillor Rosalie Crestani said she supported engagement with China but the trip didn’t meet the “pub test”.

“I believe in sticking to a yearly trip.

“This additional trip looks bad, (especially) at this time (of year).”

Cr Crestani said she’d support a single council officer, but not a councillor, to go on the trip.

Casey Central shopping centre is set to be put on notice for late-night vandalism and misbehaviour on its site. Cr Sam Aziz raised an urgent motion for the council to liaise with the centre’s managers the Scentre Group to discuss “safety, noise, vandalism and delinquency” issues at the centre. The late-night drinking congregations were taking place at the centre’s rear in view of a residential estate, Cr Aziz said. His colleague Damien Rosario added there were reported loud noises from the centre at night.

New local laws for 2018 were discussed among councillors at a Casey Council meeting on Tuesday 21 November which to replace the existing community local laws made in 2010.

One of the key changes was the establishment of smoke-free zones at Bunjil Place. But there was one change in the proposed local laws that had some councillors chuckling. Cr Rosalie Crestani announced the number of female chickens to be kept on private property would be increased from five to six chickens without a permit, adding this would allow residents with chickens to lay “an extra egg a day”.

Mayor Geoff Ablett said the results showed the council as among the state’s best for waste collection, food safety and road management.

It was also an improver with fewer closedcouncil decisions and improved aquatic and library facilities.

However the Local Government Victoria report also marked Casey down for its sluggish resolution of planning applications.

Its decision times soared from an average of 86 days to 122 days in 2016-'17.

It was more than two weeks higher than the average for comparable interface councils, and seven weeks more than the state average.

“The increasingly complex state planning system has meant it can take longer to complete a planning application,” Cr Ablett said.

“However it is worth noting Casey has among the fewest number of VCAT appeals in Victoria, indicating we’re getting these difficult and complex decisions right.”

Cr Ablett noted its “collaborative” approach

led to 35 per cent fewer VCAT appeals in 2016'17 despite soaring numbers of applications.

He said digital initiatives had been introduced to improve the planning process.

Casey was also below average on reclaiming animals and in Aboriginal children participation rates in child and maternal health care services.

It had since employed a dedicated MCH nurse to improve access for Aboriginal families.

The council stated that a large number of surrendered cats and dogs were not owned, with no possibility of being reclaimed.

Casey Council rates were on average $1694 per residential property - $60 cheaper than other interface councils and $120 more than the state average.

“The results ... show sound financial management despite the pressure of rate capping, and that Casey has lower rates than similar, large and growing municipalities like ours,” Cr Ablett said.

He said the council had one of the most reliable and low-cost waste collection services, which diverted 52 per cent of rubbish from landfill.

Closed-council decisions were down from 23 per cent to 2.6 per cent, which showed greatly improved transparency, he said.

I’m not violent with my mum.” The judge refused bail because of the unacceptable risk to the mother. But she requested that police investigate the mother’s state of mind while the man sits in remand for the next two weeks.

The husband stands accused of misappropriating $19,000 from the ex-couple’s joint account. He claims he had a verbal agreement to take the funds, she denies it - saying she’d accidentally deposited the sum into the joint account. Police offered the man a diversion order without conviction, in exchange for him giving back the money. He refused, is pleading not guilty and things are headed for a messy contest.

Healthy nosh with soul

Led by business owner and entrepreneur Caroline Towers, the organic healthy treat company is making waves in the realm of snacking with their 100 per cent organic raw balls.

Handmade in-house, the company’s raw balls are made with organic ingredients, are gluten free, dairy free, soy free plus vegan and paleo friendly; with each product using a unique combination of 100 per cent plant based pure grade essential oils to create a variety of exciting flavours.

And as Caroline explained, by creating a product that tastes "just as naughty and delicious as unhealthier snacks but has nutritional benefits", Soul Sister Nosh encourages customers to switch to a healthier lifestyle by “moving away from the cookie jar.”

“Soul Sister Nosh is all about wanting people to snack healthy and making it really easy for them to do it,” Caroline said.

“Because everyone is time poor and it becomes one of the most common things in life when you think to yourself; ‘oh I haven’t eaten, what can I grab on the run?' And that’s where Soul Sister Nosh comes in.”

Currently stocking eight different flavours including Cacao and Raspberry, Cacao and Crunchy Nut, Cacao and Orange, Cacao and Peppermint, Lime and Coconut, Simply Lemon and a limited edition Christmas Nosh, Soul Sister Nosh products come pre-rolled in both standard sized packs and mini snack packs for customer convenience.

And it’s this willingness and desire to fulfil the needs of customers that Caroline believes has helped to shape the Soul Sister Nosh product.

“You can’t just produce something because you want to do it,” Caroline said.

“You have to find out what your customers want, what they’re lacking or what they need.

“And all this food is very trendy right now since people are starting to think a lot more about healthy.

“They’re looking for alternative foods, so the business already had that going for it, but it was also the fact that everyone’s busy and wants to save time and that’s what we’re all about - we get that.

“So I guess knowing that helped us develop the business and the product to what it is now - already rolled, snack pack sized so people can put them in their bags and really yummy.”

In an industry littered with different health products, early on in her business endeavour, Caroline realised that Soul Sister Nosh needed to adopt a personality that made the brand stand out from the rest.

More than a few wise men for Christmas

By Cam Lucadou-Wells More than 100 friends of Akoonah Park Men’s Shed shared festive cheer with an impressive Christmas lunch spread.

A colossal mix of meats and salads were prepared by the shed’s resident chef, with crooning Christmas tunes delivered by smooth singer ‘The Real’ Paul Hogan.

There were also plenty of cold drinks to help diners cope with the sizzling sunshine at the 30 November lunch.

One of the attendees was John Strachan of the Prostate Cancer Foundation - which has been educating and supporting the shed’s men for three years.

The message for men to get regular checkups was getting out there, but still many were leaving it too late.

“Our message is to find out your family history. If you’ve got a family history (of prostate cancer) start getting tested at 40.”

Otherwise, men could take precautions by watching their weight and diet, not drinking excessively and stopping smoking.

The foundation has recently funded a prostate cancer support nurse at Casey Hospital, Mr Strachan said.

In turn, the shed has raised funds for the foundation’s prostate cancer research and support funds.

Also in the crowd were Victorian Men’s Shed Association secretary Dave Mudge and vicepresident Barbara Look - who recently broke the proverbial ‘glass ceiling’.

Ms Look said she was mindful that the sheds were formed for the sake of men’s health. She felt honoured to be part of the association’s board.

Mr Mudge jokingly added that the use of language had improved in Ms Look’s presence.

State Emergency Service volunteers at Narre Warren prepared for the worst but received just a “trickle” of call-outs during the state’s deluge on 1-3 December.

The unit responded to 60 jobs in Casey during the weekend including 17 in Narre Warren, 15 in Berwick and 9 in Cranbourne.

Most were for fallen trees as well as water damage from leaky roofs and over-filled gutters, particularly on the morning of 2 December.

“There was more like a constant trickle of jobs,” the unit’s controller Clinton Brown said.

“It was a bit of a reprieve for our members after the weekend before.”

Mr Brown was referring to an intense hailstorm mainly in Berwick on 25 November, which led to 168 calls for help.

With vivid memories of the calamitous 2011 floods, the SES unit organised a full roster of volunteers, a 24/7 crew with further members on standby for the weekend just passed.

Up to 40 people had also inquired about sandbags in the preceding frenzy.

In the end, about 69 millimetres of rain was collected over the weekend at Cranbourne weather station.

Mr Brown said the downpour was “substantially less than what was built up in the media”.

Still it was better for people to over-prepare than under-prepare.

“Once water gets inside, it’s done its damage.”

The area escaped lightly compared to other parts of Greater Melbourne.

Roche is back for cup

By David Nagel The town of Pakenham had a certain allure for Peter Roche when he first fell in love with racing at the old track on Racecourse Road in 1963.

It was love at first sight for the then 17-yearold, who on his first visit to a racecourse backed a 50-1 winner and has been hooked ever since.

The now 71-year-old trainer is hoping history will repeat this Saturday when he saddles up long-shot Transfer Allowance in the Listed $250,000 Sportsbet Pakenham Cup (2500m).

“It’s funny how things work out isn’t it. I got hooked on racing at Pakenham and now I train there and have had a runner in the cup for the last two years,” said Roche, who travels from Yarragon three times a week to work the only horse in his stable.

Transfer Allowance - an eight-year-old gelding - ran a cracking fourth in last year’s edition of the cup, finishing four lengths behind the David Hayes-trained Pilote D’essai.

The retired school teacher is hoping his 56-start warrior can provide him with the biggest thrill of his career.

“When I retired my main ambition was to have enough money to buy a beer and put on a quaddie,” Roche said with a laugh.

“I trained a horse called Fontaines, who won a few at the picnics, but this would be pretty special and mean a fair bit to win the Pakenham Cup. And the one hundred and fifty grand would come in pretty handy as well.”

Transfer Allowance has shown some promising signs this preparation, finishing third at Moonee Valley in early November before pulling up sore after a poor run at the same track a fortnight later. Roche is hoping some tender loving care will have the son of Danzero-Ban-

“It’s been our aim all along to have him cherry ripe for the cup but he couldn’t stretch out at the valley and pulled up with sore glutes,” he said.

“But we’ve had the vet work on him and he stretched out nicely on Monday so things are on the up. And my rain dances seem to be working because he enjoys the cut out of the ground at his age.”

Roche said Transfer Allowance had been a joy to train from the very beginning of his career.

“He gets a few niggles during the winter but overall he’s a been a gem to train,” he said.

“He’s a big horse, 16 hands, but very athletic and always on his best behaviour which makes it easy for an old bugger like me. I never underestimate the opposition but hopefully he can find his best and produce a big run.”

Oncidium Ruler for Mick Kent, and Grey Lion for Matt Cumani would appear to be the class in the race, while the Robbie Laingtrained Darabad could be hard to catch if he can reproduce the resilience he showed after leading strongly in the two-mile Sandown Cup last start.

It will be a great day of racing on Saturday with nearly a million dollars up for grabs on the nine-race card.

The top-rated acceptor is the Mick Belltrained Jungle Edge, who will need to over-

come a huge weight to take out the 1200-metre open sprint. Jungle Edge, who won at group three level and was more than competitive in the feature sprints during the Queensland autumn carnival, has been given 63.5 kilos, down to 60.5 after a three-kilo claim for apprentice Georgina Cartwright.

The other highlight on the card will be the rematch between Grand Rosso, Burning Front and Dan Zephyr in the $120,000 Racing.com VOBIS Gold Bullion (1400m). The trio ran in that exact order in the same race last year and will be favoured to be in the thick of the action again.

Others to have won on the same program last year, Invincible Al, Smart Dart and Tykiato have all been nominated for the big day.

It's academic, Berwick College are state champions

By David Nagel Three pointers may play a huge role in the game of basketball, but it’s a commitment to three important points that is paying off for the Berwick College Basketball Academy after its state title success in late November.

The school’s Year 7 Boys were crowned state champions after defeating St Joseph’s Echuca, 39-31, in the School Sports Victoria grand final.

Berwick had five teams progress to the finals and a staggering 12 made it through to the Victorian College Championships - the most of any school in the state - a huge achievement for a program that has only been running for four years.

Director of Basketball Academy, Chris Pentland, explains the birth of the program in more detail.

“It all started because of my daughter to be honest,” Pentland said.

“She was chased by another basketball program in the region, we were interested, but they take the kids out of their school program for 10 periods a week, which I wasn’t comfortable with.

“So I designed my own program, judging the students on their basketball and academic skills, and behaviour, all evenly. The school jumped on board and here we are today.

Schooling has to be number one with anything we do and, after just four years, it’s been pretty successful to date.”

In April each year the college has tryouts for Grade 6 students, with 120 trying out to make a final acceptance list of 50. The school’s current crop comes from as far and wide as Cheltenham, Drouin and Langwarrin, joining a core group from around the Berwick area in the elite program.

“I think the specialised coaching we offer is most appealing, and the kids also do a full school program,” Pentland said.

“The english, maths and science is the same as the other kids at the school but their PE block is modified. In Years 7 and 8 they have two sessions training with the academy, two doing fundamentals, and then a period of sport science.

The academy’s coaching staff has been littered with stars since its inception, with former Melbourne Tigers player Gerard Leonard, Lester Strong from SEABL, local Big V product Shannon Davies and Dandenong Rangers star Carley Mijovic among those to have imparted their knowledge.

“And we also have Ash Arnott, who has been a college recruiter in America, and that’s a big benefit for the kids who have dreams of making it into the US college system,” Pentland said.

The academy already has some impressive runs on the board, with Jaz Shelley - who will

return to the school next year after two years at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra ranked the number-one guard in the world for her age group.

Shelley, a member of Australia’s gold-medal winning team at the Under 17 World Championships, is expected to receive a full scholarship at a US college next year.

To cap off a great year for the school, the Year 7/8 Boys were crowned state champions at college level, winning their quarter, semi and grand finals by double digits against St Joseph’s, Rowville and MacKillop respectively.

Berwick College will finish the year with six teams competing at the current Australian Schools Nationals Tournament from December 3 to 8, while a Year 10 group is currently on tour in Texas, returning on Thursday 21 December.

By David Nagel Berwick Primary School student Joshua Narayan is hoping inspiration and technique drawn from two international captains will kick-start a long and successful career in the world of cricket.

The 12-year-old wicketkeeper batsman has had two months to remember, first earning selection in the Victorian Primary School team for the Australian School Sports Championships to be held at Barooga in early January.

And the talented left-hander capped things off by leading the Berwick Primary School to victory in last week’s state championship final held at the home of cricket - the mighty MCG. And it’s two left handers, who both made their mark on the ‘G’, that have encouraged him to take his cricket further.

“I met Kumar Sangakkara a couple of years ago, he was a champion wicketkeeper and toporder batsman for Sri Lanka, and left handed like me, and he inspired me to start keeping and batting at number three,” Joshua said.

“And (former Australian captain) Graham Yallop is another hero of mine, he’s my coach and a great guy and his knowledge of cricket is just incredible. When I first went to him my grip wasn’t right, but he fixed it and everything has changed since then. I’m slowly mastering the things he taught me and now I just need some power.”

Each of the local cricket competitions across the region officially called off their fixtured games prior to the weekend, due to the incredible rain event forecast.

The Warragul and District Cricket Association (WDCA), West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA), Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA) and Victorian Premier Cricket each announced late last week that due to the weather, which was only set to worsen across the weekend, all senior games had been cancelled.

In an announcement to clubs sent out on Friday afternoon, the WGCA’s management said: “Due to the adverse weather forecast, the WGCA board of management has postponed all senior cricket for this weekend.

“Round 7 will be played as one-day matches on Saturday week. Note: Round 7 one-day competition games will be abandoned and not replayed”.

Similarly, the WDCA announced: “All WDCA cricket tomorrow (Saturday) has been cancelled. Junior matches will be draws, and senior matches will revert to one-day matches next weekend”.

The DDCA announced that all senior and junior cricket across the weekend would be cancelled, with Victorian Premier Cricket also officially cancelling all its men’s and women’s premier cricket.

Interestingly though, the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association (MPCA) was one of very few competitions across the state to advise all captains to report to their grounds, where decisions on play could be made on a case-by-case basis. Some games saw play on day two, but the vast majority didn’t.

And then, once he had given it his best shot, he was forced to wait to see if his dreams had come true.

“There was a country game and then a metro game; we were the first game so we had to wait a few days to find out who got in and who didn’t,” said Josh, who started playing competitive cricket at the age of seven.

“It was late at night during the holidays and mum saw the e-mail come through, she was shocked and let me know and we were all pretty happy.”

Josh says that apart from his batting and keeping skills, there’s a third element to his game that will hold him in good stead in elite company.

“My attitude is good I think, I’m always talking in the field and I always want to be out there when I’m batting,” he said.

“And I stay pretty calm when I go out. I get disappointed but I don’t throw my bat when I go out, I just think about what I should have done to stay out there.”

Josh puts his great attitude down to his number one supporter - his Dad Jim. “When it comes to thank yous, my Dad is clearly number one,” he said.

“He’s the one who tries to make me better every day. He looked for a good coach and we found one with Graham and he’s just passionate about my cricket and helped me with my attitude and everything to do with cricket. And my Mum and brother and sister have also been really supportive.”
