■ Strangers saved his little girl... you won’t believe what happened next
Highway miracle By Brendan Rees A distressed father has told how a band of complete strangers helped save his “lifeless” baby after he waved down passing cars on the side of a busy highway in Cranbourne West. Dean Richer recalled the moment he cradled his 14-month-old daughter Tahnee on the side of the Western Port Highway as the most “terrifying minutes of my life” after she suffered a febrile convulsion. Dean said he was driving with Tahnee in the back seat of his car on Thursday 30 November. About 4.45pm, he suddenly heard her make a sound. “I thought it may have been her sucking her thumb. I’ve just turned back and she was just slouched over in her baby seat, completely blue in the face, blue lips, completely lifeless.” Panic stricken, Dean says he “freaked out” and pulled over the side of the road and started waving down cars in the vain hope someone would come to his aid. “The first thing that came to my mind was I thought maybe she was choking or she had something stuck in her mouth.” “I started tapping her on the back to try and clear her airways,“ he said, adding he was “getting no response whatsoever.” “She wasn’t breathing and at that point I honestly thought I’d lost her.” “I know my CPR but that just went out the window. Once I saw how blue and lifeless she was, it was completely on.” Dean, of Cranbourne West, said within a couple of seconds a motorist pulled over about 100 metres in front of him. “I started running towards him with the little one in my arms; it would’ve looked terrible because she was completely lifeless.” “He’s just grabbed her out of my arms and before he could do anything another car pulled up.” Dean said fortunately an off-duty nurse who he has named “Tahnee’s little guardian angel” stopped at the scene. He credits her for
saving his daughter’s life. “She started reading her heart rate with her hands; she was just able to extend this sense of calm over the situation. “If she didn’t come along I don’t know what would have happened,” he said. With the outdoor temperature soaring above 30 degrees, he said more motorists pulled over and helped put little Tahnee in the shade, with one person even taking off their shirt so she wasn’t lying on the grass. “It was just incredible. I was blown away with the amount of support and care.” Dean said he called triple zero but admits he was “struggling” and felt “pretty useless on the phone." Another person had to hold his phone on loudspeaker so the nurse could talk to the emergency operator. He said the ambulance arrived soon after the nurse had gained a response from Tahnee, adding: “She was able to get Tahnee semi-normal by then.” He said doctors at Dandenong Hospital kept an eye on Tahnee’s heart rate and temperature. “She wasn’t alert and not really responding that well,” he recalled. “They’ve given her some medication and since then it’s been great. We’ve still got to keep an eye on her temperature.” Tahnee is now at home and her parents cannot thank their Good Samaritans enough. “I just wanted to say thanks, especially to the nurse and every single person that was there. They may not have thought they did a lot but they played a significant role.” But Dean added: “There’s another chapter to the story.” “My wife was 38 weeks pregnant,” he said. “The next day she actually went into labour. We had our little Tahnee who I thought I’d lost and within 24 hours my wife was giving birth to our new daughter, Maya. “It’s been pretty tough for me emotionally; I’ve gone on a bit of a rollercoaster.”

‘Smarter’ Monash By Brendan Rees Six large gantries carrying electronic signs were installed last week as part of the $400 million Monash Freeway upgrade to ease congestion and create a “smarter commute.” Minister for Roads and Roads Safety Luke Donnellan, who made the upgrade announcement in Berwick on Friday 1 December, said a further 44 gantries would be installed with overhead electronic signs to change speed limits and close lanes in the event of an incident. The biggest of the gantries is 61 metres long and weighs 40 tonnes. “These gantries will form part of a massive, interconnected system that will reduce crashes on the freeway, improve incident response and safe travel time,” he said. “What we’re looking for is the sweet spot, so we don’t have the stop-start patterns.” “We’re getting the Monash Freeway upgrade done, delivering extra lanes and smarter freeway system to get people home safer and sooner,” Mr Donnellan said. He said more than 70,000 tonnes of asphalt had been laid to create 30 kilometres of new lanes, with 35 kilometres of fibre optic cable installed for the smart technology. Mr Donnellan said five gantries had been installed between Warrigal Road and Pakenham, adding the upgrade would be completed mid to late next year. “More than 20 smaller cantilever gantries on freeway entry ramps will hold traffic signals to automatically manage the number of cars entering the freeway.” Last month marked one year of major construction on the freeway upgrade. Mr Donnellan said the latest freeway management technology and an extra lane in each direction would mean a “safer and more reliable” journey for the more than 200,000 drivers that use the Monash Freeway. Asked if the yellow lines on the Monash Freeway during the upgrade were causing con-

It’s the opposite of what people are thinking.” According to VicRoads data in the period of November and December 2016, there were five serious injury crashes and no fatal crashes on the stretch of the Monash Freeway between the Princes Highway and McGregor Road. Shadow Minister for Roads David Hodgett said Mr Donnellan was “kidding himself” if he did not accept that the mix of white and yellow lines on the Monash Freeway was confusing for motorists. “Although it’s conceivable that Luke Donnellan hasn’t experienced the issue, living in trendy Fitzroy and ignoring his electorate of Narre Warren North, 40 kilometres away, he doesn’t battle the increasing congestion on the Monash Freeway every day.” Maurice Blackburn road injuries lawyer Ta-
mara Wright said the firm had a “few claims” with road accidents on the busy freeway, adding that motorists were confused with the yellow lines. She said until 2012, the old white lines were removed with a high pressure hose or painted over to ensure there was only one set of lane lines. “I’m sure the change was done for a good reason, but when we’ve got people that are confused, we really have to question that ’is this the safest practice now?’.” VicRoads South Eastern Project director Ray Paterson said crews would be working around the clock during the holiday period between Eastlink and South Gippsland Freeway. “We’re getting a lot of work done while there is less traffic on the road over summer, and encourage drivers to plan ahead, allow extra travel time or seek alternative routes,” he said. In the lead-up to Christmas, works will be carried out at night to get the surface of the freeway ready for its new top layer to be installed.
Unrestrained A 31 year-old Cranbourne woman is likely to be charged after allegedly driving on Princes Highway in Hallam with seven children unrestrained in her car. Police say it was “unbelievable” when Casey Highway Patrol members observed two small children “jumping around” unrestrained on a back seat as the Mazda wagon was seen leaving a motel on Thursday 23 November, about 3.30pm. Police intercepted the car and found there were no child restraints or capsules in the vehicle as well as the driver being unlicensed and driving an unregistered vehicle. A closer check of the eight-seater car found the following: A five-year-old male in the very back seat unrestrained. A three-year-old female jumping on the back seat unrestrained. A two-year-old female laying on the back seat unrestrained. A four-year-old female sitting in the back seat unrestrained. A seven-year-old female sitting in the back seat unrestrained. A nine-year-old male nursing a threemonth-old baby, both unrestrained. Police interviewed the driver in relation to the serious dangers of having unrestrained children in the car and she will appear before a magistrate in the coming months. Casey Highway Patrol members also detected two motorists driving under the influence of illicit drugs when they conducted close to 200 preliminary breath tests. Fourteen penalty notices were issued in relation to speeding and another six for motorists for not obeying traffic signals or signs. Four motorists were caught using their mobile phone while driving while another five drivers were found either driving unlicensed, disqualified, cancelled or suspended.

Our shame: one in 20 homes burgled By Bonny Burrows Local postcodes have the highest chance of being hit by home burglaries, an RACV analysis of police statistics shows. Postcode 3978, which encompasses Cardinia, Clyde and Clyde North, recorded the worst burglary rates in Melbourne during the 2016-17 financial year, according to the data, with one in 20 homes burgled. Neighbouring Officer and Officer South also ranked poorly with one in 27 homes targeted during the same time period. RACV general manager of public policy and corporate affairs Bryce Posser said the development of new housing estates made the local areas attractive to burglars. “We believe this could be because new homes include new appliances and often adjoin vacant blocks, which aid quick entry and exit.
“With many people at work during the day these newer suburbs are much easier targets,” Mr Posser said. Mr Prosser said the data revealed that a large portion of break-ins were opportunistic and avoidable. “Our analysis tells us one in six of all breakins occur through an unlocked or open door or window. “Victorians can easily prevent these occurrences by locking up when leaving the home and being mindful of locking doors while at home,” he said. Police Superintendent Paul Hollowood echoed Mr Posser’s statements that a significant proportion of local burglaries were occurring in residential housing estates where many properties are still under construction. “These new housing estates can often present as an area for opportunistic thieving. They often have limited security and are vacant
overnight with less chance of detection from a passer-by,” Supt Hollowood said. “We encourage everyone to ensure that their building sites have appropriate security measures in place and expensive equipment is not left on site.” The superintendent said police were working hard to reduce local crime. “While Cardinia, Clyde and Clyde North remain at the top the list, it’s important to note that the data released by the RACV shows a slight decrease in burglaries from these postcodes over the last 12 months,” Supt Hollowood said. “Police in those areas have been working hard to reduce incidents of burglary and we are starting to see some of those crime categories start to stabilise. “These results are good news and show that our proactive strategies are starting to take effect.”

… BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE The editor’s desk To those of us involved in almost daily battle with the Monash Freeway, the news of any works - the sense of any prospective relief - is as welcome as a cool summer’s breeze. But as we look at the further works announced this week, we can only wonder - how can they find 10 metres of the thing that isn’t being worked on at the moment? The general consensus is that congestion across the network has increased markedly over the past one to two months. And the answer seems to be that it’s “disruptive works" - that is, the sheer size and scale of works across the road network - that are giving us the grief at the moment. And that leads to more than a little suspicion over how well the current Monash works have been managed. We can only drive for so long - looking longingly at new empty expanses of tarmac next to us, closed off, seemingly requiring not much more than linemarking - before we begin to smell a rat. Surely, the fragile umbilical cord that connects us to the lifeblood of the city should be more robust than this. Because that word - fragile - comes up increasingly in regards to the Monash these days. It doesn’t even take an accident now. One broken-down car in one lane at peak hour - sorry, make that peak hours - is enough to see the Monash wind to a standstill like an old mantle clock with a broken mainspring. Rest assured, if those who made the decisions about the Monash drove it a bit more often, there would be a revolution. Jason Beck

Revving to go By Brendan Rees Motorcyclists are revving up for a landmark event in Cranbourne this festive season. The annual Cranbourne Toy Run charity run for the Father Bob Foundation will move through the streets again as organisers begin to take donations for the event. Organiser Dale Maggs will continue the legacy of his mother, the late Barbara Maggs OAM, who helped get the event off the ground more than 30 years ago with her partner Tony Jenner. Mr Maggs said it was important that the community donated toys, tins of food or money to those less fortunate. “We give them pride of place at our Christmas table by giving them the opportunity to have a decent Christmas and a few toys where perhaps they wouldn’t.” Members of the Cranbourne Information and Support Centre (CISC) will be ready with their trailer to receive donations at 9am on Sunday 10 December outside Bunnings Warehouse in Cranbourne, which will be distributed throughout the community before Christmas. Mr Maggs said a lot of the donations went back to the CISC so people in the local area canould benefit. “Please help folk doing it tough, especially children,” he said. The ride departs at 9.45am sharp from Bunnings (corner of South Gippsland Highway and Thompsons Road) to the CFMEU training complex in Port Melbourne where stalls, refreshments and live music will be available. Mr Maggs said the group collected new non-fluffy toys, non-perishable food (cans with ring-pulls), long-life milk, toiletries, new clothes and towels, and cash. “Many riders from all walks of life are welcome to attend to support the Father Bob Foundation,” he said. For more, visit the Father Bob Foundation online at https://www.fatherbobs.com.
The 1834 square metre site attracted substantial buyer interest.
Cranny’s top price A substantial site in booming Cranbourne has sold for $3.35 million after attracting strong interest from a broad market of investors, owner occupiers and developers. The 1834 square metre site at 132-132A High Street, which sold on Thursday 30 November is considered a prime position as it sits opposite Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre. Fitzroy’s agents James Lockwood and Chris Kombi handled the auction campaign, in conjunction with David Kalb and Keith Kooloos of Savills, on behalf of a private investor. Mr Lockwood said the winning local buyer intended to occupy the property and valueadd in the future. “The property’s zoning, extensive 33-metre frontage and excellent location within one of
the country’s strongest growth corridors attracted strong inquiry throughout the campaign,” he said. Mr Kalb said Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre was anchored by Coles, Woolworths, Kmart, Target, Harris Scarfe and JB Hi-Fi, and provided a ready-made drawcard to the immediate area, offering further exposure to any businesses that would operate from the site. “Investors and owner occupiers understood the long-term security and future prospects offered by a property centrally located in a retail trading area, within a suburb undergoing massive population growth,” he said. “The site’s zoning offered a potential height allowance of 17.5 metres, which also attracted developers in big numbers.”

The Berwick Shire contractors ‘City Wide’ seem to be unable to prevent killing community tree plantings in the Wilson Botanic Park to William Road area. This morning another acacia tree lost its life to the almighty ‘whipper snipper’ due to careless attention to the job. This adds to an impressive list of close to 100 fatalities over a seven-year period in this small area alone. This simply will not do. It is not good enough to keep killing trees. We’ll be back to the same arid area of some years ago. How I wish the shire would live up to its slogan : “Greening the City of Berwick”. Geoff de Jonge, Berwick.

On page 14 of the Berwick Star News of 30 November there is an item on protecting the character of Berwick’s “Hoddle grid”. In Narre Warren, council is proposing an amendment to change a residential area from houses to four-storey blocks of units (Amendment C224). Details of the residential area are on one page out of the 245 pages in the nine documents that make up the amendment. Even this page contains conflicting information - for example a height limit of 13.5 metres is stated, then comes the phrase “13.5m height limit increased to 16m on Princes Highway frontage to limit overshadowing, overlooking and visual bulk issues.”

Pole is blown
Firey promise made
A fuse that was believed to have blown on a utility power pole at the corner of Mark Court and Somerville Road in Hampton Park, sent sparks flying on Friday 1 December. Ten firefighters from Hampton Park and Hallam fire brigades responded to the incident about 2pm which caused a black out to about 50 homes in two nearby streets. Hampton Park CFA Lieutenant Liam Downey said residents heard a loud bang and saw sparks flying. “When we got there, all we saw was a wire that was constantly arcing and the far top of the power pole had started to catch fire.” “The rain, because it was so heavy extinguished it for us. We made sure it didn’t escalate.” Lt Downey said the rain water was safe as it was not earthed and therefore non-conductive. He believed a fuse had blown in a transformer on the pole.
By Brendan Rees A $3 million land purchase commitment for a new Clyde North fire station by the State Government has been announced. Minister for Suburban Development Lily D’Ambrosio visited Cranbourne CFA fire station for the announcement on Wednesday 6 December saying a Clyde North fire station would improve incident response times and keep the community safe. She said purchase and settlement of land was expected to be completed about mid next year. “This is the first step in securing the land so that government can plan ahead. Plans are in place so that infrastructure follows at some point,” she said. “(These are) much-needed funds to help the CFA continue to do the terrific job they do to protect the local community.” Ms D’Ambrosio said the station, which would integrate career and volunteer firefighters would enable better fire protection, suppression and education in the Clyde North area. “(It will) protect the lives and property of the rapidly increasing population in Clyde North and the City of Casey.” Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera echoed Ms D’Ambrosio’s statement that a new station would keep the community safe. “This new fire station will improve response times to emergency incidents in the suburb of Clyde North and surrounding brigade area, ensuring better fire protection, suppression and education for residents,” he said. CFA Assistant Chief Officer Trevor Owen said the announcement was an “exciting opportunity” and vital in supporting the community. “We thank the government for making a contribution to be able to purchase in a very,
Did you see? Casey Crime Investigation Unit is appealing for witnesses following a collision on Bellevue Drive in Berwick at about 1.45am on Friday 1 December. Detective Senior Constable Jodie McManus said an unknown driver collided with a black Subaru Impreza that was sitting in the middle of Bellevue Drive near the intersection of Centre Road. “All parties have left the scene, including the person that’s run into the car. I just need to know who they are.” Detective Sen Const McManus said it was believed unknown persons were attempting to load the Subaru, which was left at the scene, onto a trailer. She said witnesses in a nearby house heard the collision and believed those involved were aged in their twenties, although they were not able to provide a description of the other car.

very developing and growth area in Clyde North.” It comes as the Liberal Nationals Opposition also promised a $5.7 million fire station for Clyde North if they win government next year. The new fire station will be integrated with the recently announced election commitment of a new $15 million police station in Clyde North. Shadow Minister for Emergency Services, Brad Battin said Clyde North was one of the fastest growing suburbs in Victoria, with six families moving into the area each day. He said between 2014 and 2016 the City of Casey grew by 25,000, a growth rate of 8.65 per cent and it is anticipated that the population will reach 515,000 by 2041. “Matthew Guy and the Liberal Nationals are committed to keeping Victorians and their homes safe,” Mr Battin said. “Only the Liberal Nationals will commit to funding vital community safety projects like a fire station in Clyde North.” “Daniel Andrews has been so busy fighting a war with CFA volunteers that communities like Clyde North have suffered.” He said the new station would begin as a volunteer station, providing an opportunity for the community to become involved in volunteering. “There are currently no fire stations in the suburb of Clyde North, with Clyde and Cranbourne stations struggling to accommodate the growing neighbouring suburb.” Member for Bass, Brian Paynter said the Clyde North had seen a massive population growth and needed its own protection against crime and fire. “People deserve to know their families and homes will be kept safe in the event of a fire - the Liberal Nationals will ensure that happens.”

Casey Central shopping centre is set to be put on notice for late-night vandalism and misbehaviour on its site. Cr Sam Aziz raised an urgent motion for the council to liaise with the centre’s managers the Scentre Group to discuss “safety, noise, vandalism and delinquency” issues at the centre. The late-night drinking congregations were taking place at the centre’s rear in view of a residential estate, Cr Aziz said. His colleague Damien Rosario added there were reported loud noises from the centre at night.
New local laws for 2018 were discussed among councillors at a Casey Council meeting on Tuesday 21 November which to replace the existing community local laws made in 2010. One of the key changes was the establishment of smoke-free zones at Bunjil Place. But there was one change in the proposed local laws that had some councillors chuckling. Cr Rosalie Crestani announced the number of female chickens to be kept on private property would be increased from five to six chickens without a permit, adding this would allow residents with chickens to lay “an extra egg a day”.

Who do you believe? A man with a long criminal record or his mother, who he claims is mentally ill? The mum had got an intervention order on the man after he allegedly threatened to kill her and her dog. On one occasion, the man was found by police there despite an intervention order - he said he had been goaded by a text from his mum that she was throwing his stuff out on the street. “She makes it up,” the man told his bail hearing. “My mum is very sick. I’m not violent with my mum.” The judge refused bail because of the unacceptable risk to the mother. But she requested that police investigate the mother’s state of mind while the man sits in remand for the next two weeks.

Bitter end Divorces don’t always run smooth. For one South-East ex-couple, it appears a dispute has led to criminal charges. The husband stands accused of misappropriating $19,000 from the ex-couple’s joint account. He claims he had a verbal agreement to take the funds, she denies it - saying she’d accidentally deposited the sum into the joint account. Police offered the man a diversion order without conviction, in exchange for him giving back the money. He refused, is pleading not guilty and things are headed for a messy contest.

Funds push By Brendan Rees Casey Council will call on the State Government to take urgent action to support neighbourhood houses as they experience an “erosion” of funding. The council resolved to support the 2018 state budget and election campaign to increase funding and “vital support” for 35 state-wide neighbourhood houses and neighbourhood house networks by writing to the Minister for Families and Children and Early Childhood Education Jenny Mikakos. Councillor Amanda Stapledon, who spoke to the motion at a council meeting on Tuesday 21 November, said funding was needed so neighbourhood houses could meet the needs of the community. “If we didn’t have neighbourhood houses, the stress on council would be phenomenal. “They rely heavily on volunteers that do such a good job,” she said. Cr Stapledon said neighbourhood houses faced increasing needs and costs every week. She said administrative staff did “way and above” what they were paid for and were under “a lot of stress”. “People would fall between the gaps without our neighbourhood houses. I am really passionate about this campaign and how we need to support it.” She mentioned that neighbourhood houses helped people get their lives on track, get an education and a job, minimise isolation, and address mental health issues, adding “and making sure people feel engaged and they’ve got a centre place to go to”. “They are just so flexible in meeting the need of their community.” Also to be contacted in council’s letter will be Liberal Shadow Minister for Families and Children, Prevention of Family Violence and Housing Georgie Crozier; president of the Mu-

Balla Balla Community Centre manager Maree Cullinan said the funding would be a “great step” in helping support their cause. “This is not just Casey. It’s actually a statewide push. We are certainly getting behind it because we haven’t had a funding increase for nine years - it’s been a long time coming.” She said their centre, based in Cranbourne East, was not always able to identify the “changing dynamics” of the community.

Call for hall By Brendan Rees Casey’s landmark Cranbourne Public Hall desperately needs funds to “restore it back to its former glory,” a Casey councillor says. Cr Amanda Stapledon said the hall was a “wonderful community facility” but was dilapidating and needed urgent attention. “Council is the only one putting any money into that hall, and we need some State Government money to restore the hall back to its former glory.” Casey Council resolved at a council meeting on Tuesday 21 November to write to the Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio calling on the State Government to provide funding opportunities to restore the hall, which was built in 1973. Cr Stapledon said a response from the State Government “was not too much to ask” given the building belonged to the Department of Environment, Land Water and Planning (DELWP). “It’s currently getting a lot of work done just from sheer blood, sweat and tears to a standard for people to use.” “It has deteriorated. It desperately needs a facelift, a new floor and new toilets be installed. It’s a beautiful building, and needs so much TLC and a restoration.” A Casey Council document stated council officers had sent multiple emails and called the Deputy Secretary of Local Infrastructure office between August and October this year about funding, but “to date no formal response from DEWLP regarding council’s request has been received.” Cranbourne Public Hall president Judy Davis said the hall would be closed for three weeks from Monday 1 January next year as volunteers carried out repair works. “Our floor needs a complete rejuvenation. We’re having the floor sanded back and

We’ve had to scrap back six coats of paint.” She said upgrades to the drainage, toilets, tables and painting were needed. “We believe there’s about $150 to $200,000 worth of renovations.” “It just needs some TLC to keep it and try and modernise it.” “It would be great for the people of Cranbourne because this is their hall.” Shadow Minister for Local Government David Morris said it was just “plain rude” that the State Government had not responded to the council’s plea for financial help. “It’s not good enough that the council is being ignored. It’s just plain rude regardless of whether there’s any funding or not. The least the government can do is respond to the council,” he said. A report will come back to council in February.
Pupils, staff and special guests marked the official opening of Tulliallan Primary School in Cranbourne North with a celebratory assembly and a cake. Tulliallan Primary School Events co-ordinator Fiona Milo said the opening ceremony on Thursday 30 November was “fantastic.” She said the school captains and representatives from each of Tulliallan’s learning community spoke about ‘What Tulliallan means to me.’ “All of the students’ writing pieces were displayed in the stadium. Then students presented a number of items (using) USBs with photos, student work, our first year book, the Herald Sun, a school timetable, that are going to be sealed into a time capsule. This capsule will be opened when our inaugural Prep students graduate from Year 6.” Representatives from the school council, Education Department, local kindergartens, Public Private Partnerships and parents attended the official opening where a commemorative ribbon was cut to mark the occasion. Tulliallan Primary was one of 10 new schools to open across the state in January this year as part of the State Government’s record investment in education to meet surging growth. The school has state-of-the-art sporting facilities such as a competition-grade gym, and two basketball courts. Another feature is a YMCA-operated Early Learning Centre to facilitate the transition between early childhood learning and primary school. “It’s definitely a great opportunity for students - great facilities, dedicated staff and amazing students. Minister for Education James Merlino said the south eastern suburbs were booming, and the State Government was investing in infrastructure support growing enrolments. “(We’re) creating bright futures for our kids and ensuring they get the education they need in the facilities they deserve,” he said.

Creating customised medications for people of all ages, domestic pets and farm animals, LifeCare Compounding Pharmacy strives to assist customers in achieving their health goals and to improve and maintain their quality of life. As principal pharmacist Cheryl Chia explained, LifeCare works directly with prescribers including physicians, nurse practitioners and veterinarians to create customised medication solutions for patients and animals whose healthcare needs cannot be met by manufactured medications. “Personalised medicine is a convenient way for a physician to individualise a treatment according to their patients’ specific needs,” Cheryl said. “Compounding is often required for medical reasons; some patients require a particular non-essential ingredient to be removed from their medication to prevent an allergic reaction. Others require compounded medication to acquire an exact dosage amount that is unique to their own personal needs, and which may not be available in the available marketed drugs. “It also makes it possible to create a drug accessible in a dosage form that is not commercially available.” LifeCare Compounding Pharmacy specialises in pain management, hormone restoration, dermatology solutions, multiple sclerosis and paediatric solutions, however the pharmacy’s services also extend to veterinarians, IVF specialists, dentists, hospice care and clinical trials. “Our cutting-edge technology and compounding expertise allows us to provide

‘Violated’ by wallet theft
BUSINESS PROFILE
By Brendan Rees A woman has told of her relief when her identity cards were handed in to police after thieves allegedly broke into her car and stole her wallet in Cranbourne East. Lauren Aldred said her wallet containing $70 cash and personal cards was taken from the centre console of her Jeep Cherokee when it was parked in her driveway in the Mayfield Estate sometime between 2pm on Tuesday 7 November and Wednesday morning of 8 November. “It’s not something you would expect to happen ever. It’s my property.” “I don’t usually leave my wallet in there so I didn’t realise at the time. I mustn't have locked my car,” she said. “I didn’t click until later in the (Wednesday) afternoon when my partner asked me what money I had in my wallet, like cash and then it hit me.” After appealing for help on Facebook’s Casey Crime Page, her ID cards were handed to Cranbourne Police after being located at Kelly’s Motor Club Hotel in Cranbourne - two days after the theft. “I’m at least glad that I got some of my ID back. That’s one less stress.” “No wallet with the cards, but my driver’s licence and other important cards are there. No bank cards either, however they are cancelled anyway,” she said. “For everyone times are tough so it was great not to have to worry about money being taken out of my account.” “The most worrying part was that someone was going to take my ID and order all these things (such as) mobile phone plans and me being the one obviously getting pinned for it.” Ms Aldred, who wished not to reveal the street in which her car was parked at the time
Lauren Aldred, with her son Archer, says she feels "violated" after thieves allegedly broke into her car (pictured) and stole her wallet. 175488 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS of the theft, said it happened near Lineham Drive, adding she felt “violated.” “There’s always that factor that it could happen again, maybe they are going to target my car regardless if it’s unlocked next time they try and break into my car.” Victoria Police have advised people not to leave valuables or gifts “any longer than absolutely necessary” in their cars as Christmas approaches. “Thefts from motor vehicles are disappointingly quite common and while there is no good time to be a victim of theft, the holiday period is a particularly painful one,” police say. Police also discouraged people leaving presents in their cars and returning to the shops. General tips to avoid theft from cars:
· Secure your car; · Park in a locked garage if possible; off the street in your driveway if you · Park don’t have a garage, and in a well-lit area - thieves do not want to · Park be caught breaking into cars, so increase the risk that others will detect them.

Struggling families and those in need will be welcomed with open arms at Hampton Park Uniting Church on Christmas Day as it celebrates its 10th annual Christmas lunch. Hampton Park Uniting Church Reverend Mat Harry said so often people needed a great deal of support and nearly all support services were closed over the Christmas break. “This is precisely the time when the wonderful volunteers at Uniting Place Hampton Park step into the gap,” he said. “At 11.30 on Christmas Day, the doors will swing wide open to welcome in about 120

Typically, these will not be strangers, but people we have spent much time with over the year, sharing stories and eating with each Thursday at Uniting Place and providing groceries to each week, as we do life together. “Although, there may be some new people we have not met before, they will be embraced as part of this most welcoming of families,” Rev Harry said. He said for many people this time of year may be “very painful” triggering feelings of stress, anxiety and grief, adding: “Those who are experiencing financial stress can feel totally excluded from Christmas”. GROW BUSINESS … CASEY CARDINIA REGION
Healthy nosh with soul By Rebecca Skilton Narre Warren’s own Soul Sister Nosh is aiming to help the world get on the right side of healthy. Led by business owner and entrepreneur Caroline Towers, the organic healthy treat company is making waves in the realm of snacking with their 100 per cent organic raw balls. Handmade in-house, the company’s raw balls are made with organic ingredients, are gluten free, dairy free, soy free plus vegan and paleo friendly; with each product using a unique combination of 100 per cent plant based pure grade essential oils to create a variety of exciting flavours. And as Caroline explained, by creating a product that tastes "just as naughty and delicious as unhealthier snacks but has nutritional benefits", Soul Sister Nosh encourages customers to switch to a healthier lifestyle by “moving away from the cookie jar.” “Soul Sister Nosh is all about wanting people to snack healthy and making it really easy for them to do it,” Caroline said. “Because everyone is time poor and it becomes one of the most common things in life when you think to yourself; ‘oh I haven’t eaten, what can I grab on the run?' And that’s where Soul Sister Nosh comes in.” Currently stocking eight different flavours including Cacao and Raspberry, Cacao and Crunchy Nut, Cacao and Orange, Cacao and Peppermint, Lime and Coconut, Simply Lemon and a limited edition Christmas Nosh, Soul Sister Nosh products come pre-rolled in both standard sized packs and mini snack packs for customer convenience. And it’s this willingness and desire to fulfil the needs of customers that Caroline believes has helped to shape the Soul Sister Nosh product. “You can’t just produce something because you want to do it,” Caroline said. “You have to find out what your customers want, what they’re lacking or what they need. “And all this food is very trendy right now since people are starting to think a lot more about healthy. “They’re looking for alternative foods, so the business already had that going for it, but it was also the fact that everyone’s busy and wants to save time and that’s what we’re all about - we get that. “So I guess knowing that helped us develop the business and the product to what it is now - already rolled, snack pack sized so people can put them in their bags and really yummy.” In an industry littered with different health products, early on in her business endeavour, Caroline realised that Soul Sister Nosh needed to adopt a personality that made the brand stand out from the rest. Having had experience in both the corporate and IT industries, as well as having run another award-winning home business, Caroline conducted market testing in regards to co-

(Nosh of course being a colloquial word mostly used in the U.K meaning ‘to snack on, to eat lightly or to grab a quick bite.’) Now, Soul Sister Nosh can produce up to 350 balls in a day and are quickly beginning to appear in a number of local cafes and stores. “Soul Sister Nosh has a feel to it - there’s a bit of humour to (our products and marketing) and we hope that carries through to what we do,” Caroline said. “Because there’s a lot of business out there doing what we do so you have to find something that makes you a little bit different.”

SPORT
New home in the comp By Nick Creely The Southern Football Netball League (SFNL) will officially welcome Hampton Park Football Netball Club into the competition as of 2018. The Redbacks will join the SFNL after the state governing body approved a transfer from South East Football Netball League (SEFNL). “It was a very thorough process. We asked a lot of questions of the clubs and had to come back to them several times,” SFNL General Manager - Operations David Jennings said. “To their credit, (the) submissions were outstanding and we’re confident with where we have landed. “The obligation of the Board is to weigh up the needs and wants of all existing member clubs to ensure any new club joining is in the best interest of the League. “(Hampton Park) have demonstrated their commitment to the SFNL and we are confident that (they) will continue to add value to our football and netball community.” The Redbacks have severely struggled for on-field success in recent years, with two winless seasons in 2016 and 2017 sealing their fate. In a statement, Hampton Park FNC copresidents Tim Ziegeler and Mick O’Brien expressed their thrill to be joining the Southern league, and are looking to bounce back after a lack of on-field success in the SEFNL. “We are really pleased with the outcome and thank the SFNL board and football operations department for their assistance with our move to the SFNL,” they said. “We are looking forward to becoming a pro-
ductive member of the SFNL and seeing the club become competitive again.” The SFNL has also announced a revamped competition structure for 2018, with the continual growth of the competition seeing the expansion of three divisions to four. The move follows the acceptance of Hampton Park and Frankston Dolphins in to the competition for 2018, as well as Cerberus entering a team for the first time in several years. There will be no local teams in Division 1, Keysborough and Doveton Eagles will compete in Division 2, Springvale Districts, Hallam, Endeavour Hills and Hampton Park will compete in Division 3, while Lyndale, Lyndhurst, Sandown and Dandenong make up part of the newly formed Division 4. Jennings said the restructure was necessary to accommodate the growth of the League, as well as make the SFNL a more competitive, evenly matched competition. “Moving to four divisions in 2018 is a significant shake up of the competition,” he said. “As a League, we had to be diligent in weighing up the short and long-term benefits for both a club and as a collective. “Our aim is to make the competition more even and to promote the opportunity for more clubs to play finals. “By going to four divisions it will establish the best possible environment for clubs to be sustainable and competitive.”

It’s all over in eight overs! By Nick Creely In last Wednesday night’s action-packed evening of DDCA Twenty20 cricket in sweltering conditions, it was Berwick who once again proved their might by disposing of Turf 3 club Hampton Park at Arch Brown Reserve. Batting first, the Redbacks simply had no answers for Bears’ marquee man Brendan Rose (5/8), who tore the visitors to shreds and proved his class with a stunning spell. Jarrod Armitage (2/9), Cory Bevan (2/15) and veteran Jarrod Goodes (1/9) each did their part as the Bears rolled the Redbacks for just 58. The Bears wasted little time in swiftly chasing the runs down, with Armitage (20) helping guide the home side to victory in just eight overs. Down at Marriott Waters, Steven Spoljaric helped push Springvale South to a comfortable victory over a gallant Lynbrook. The champion all-rounder plundered a brutal 66 to guide the Bloods to 8/138 off their allotted 20 overs, before snaring 2/29 as the Lakers scrambled their way to 7/111. North Dandenong also continued its winning ways in the short form, belting Berwick Springs away from home. Skipper Asfan Thajudeen (37), Shehan Fernando (31), Adam Amin (24) and Gayantha Wijethilaka (29) all combined brilliantly to guide 28 STAR NEWS

the Maroons to a formidable 9/168 after batting first. The Springs managed to bat out their overs, finishing on 8/125. A gallant effort down at Sweeney Reserve wasn’t enough for Narre Warren to topple powerhouse Mordialloc, with the Bloodhounds cruising to victory. Batting first, the Bloodhounds notched up an impressive 3/167 off the back of a terrific 62 to Brendan Morris, before restricting the Magpies to 4/103 after their 20 overs. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night’s action was down at the clash between Narre North and Hallam Kalora Park, with the North defeating the Turf 1 club by 27 runs. Batting first, the North notched up 6/138 after Josh Henry’s (57) fluent knock at the top, but not even in-form batsman Thailvan Xavier (30) could guide the Hawks to victory, with Henry (2/16) starring with the ball to restrict them to just 111 in 18.3 overs. In the night’s other matches, Dandenong West (6/123) defeated St Mary’s, St Brigid’s/ St Louis (7/121) continue to surprise with another victory over Cranbourne (7/120), Heinz Southern (7/188) proved a class above Doveton North (105), Narre South (8/180) toppled Parkfield (8/165) in a high-scoring encounter, and Dingley (111) defeated Silverton (87).
National walk race champion Pramesh Prasad is relentless in his pursuit of a spot in Australia’s Commonwealth Games team on the Gold Coast in April 2018. The 43-year-old from Narre Warren is not letting anything stand in his way after returning to the sport three years, and in stunning fashion. Pramesh has won countless gold medals all over the globe, displaying his dominance on numerous occasions against some of the world’s best athletes. Only recently, Pramesh returned from the Masters Games in Tasmania, stealing the show with an impressive haul of medals for Casey Masters Athletics. “I went to Tasmania, and got gold in all my walk events, and also got a silver in a run, so I was really happy with that and how it all went,” he said. Casey excelled as a whole at the Masters Games, with Pramesh capturing three gold medals (1500, 3000 and 5000 metre walks), Penny Hall also snaring three (1500, 3000 and 5000) and her husband Mike claiming four gold medals in running and high jump events, an outstanding achievement. Pramesh was a former junior champion in his teenage years, and despite giving away competing in his young adult life, has rediscovered his passion for the sport after deciding to return at the age of 40.
“When I was younger, a teenager, I was competing a lot as a professional at international level, and then I stopped because of study and work,” he explained. “But in the last three years I started again, and I never thought I’d get to this high level so soon, and achieve so much in so little time. “All I wanted to do is look after my health and get fitter, and I just started and my competitive spirit just naturally kicked in. “I then went to Casey Athletics and met Mike Hall, and it’s gone from there, really.” But as Pramesh explains, all the hard work and dedication over the last three years boils down to one burning ambition - representing his country on the Gold Coast. “I’m training really hard at the moment, just to try and get ready for the Commonwealth Games - the (Australian) team won’t be named until Feburary next year, so I have another two big races coming up to prepare for that,” he said. “I’m training at least about five or six days a week, mostly in the afternoons, and then sometimes on the weekend when we have Victorian championships in summer time.” Pramesh will be competing in the Australian 50km Racewalking championships in Melbourne in just two weeks, as he builds up for the summer season. The Casey Masters Athletics group meet every Monday night at Casey Fields from 7pm, and invite anyone to come down and give it a try.

Ladies show class CRANBOURNE BOWLS The ladies played against Blackburn midweek and crushed them by a massive 59 shots. With Saturday pennant bowls washed out all the news this week is about the outstanding performance by the exciting midweek ladies team who won big on all three rinks. Side 1 - Division 1 The rink skipped by Sue Hudson and now aptly named the “Awesome Foursome” won by 41 shots. Sue and her crew of Isobel Partington, Shirley Venville and Joy McLisky restricted the opposition to score only a measly six shots while totalling a massive 47 shots for themselves on a day when everything went their way. Not to be outdone Yvonne Van Der Wees and her rink of Maureen Cameron, Helen Witherden and Lynne Wood won by eight shots while Skip Freda Farrall, Maree Taylor, Joyce Pearce and Kath Dudink won by 10 shots. Next week the ladies take on Pakenham at home in a game they hope to compete well in prior to a long break. In a quirky fixture the ladies team will play no competition bowls until the next round on 16 January 2018. Meanwhile, in Saturday pennant Cranbourne top side takes on ladder leader Beaumaris at home which should be a great spectacle to end the half way mark for the year. Big improvers, Cranbourne second side, take on Armadale away and the club is expecting a strong competitive effort from the team. Ladies - Division 1 Cranbourne 92 defeated Blackburn 33 (Partington, Venville, McLisky, Hudson 47-6, Taylor, Pearce, Dudink, Farrall 25-15, and Cameron, Witherden, Wood, Van Der Wees 20-12).

The countdown is on to the biggest day on the local racing calendar with the $250,000 Sportsbet Pakenham Cup to be run this Saturday 9 December. A total of $920,000 in prize money will be up for grabs at PRC’s home track at Tynong, hosting its second metropolitan-standard Saturday raceday. Oncidium Ruler for Mick Kent, and Grey Lion for Matt Cumani would appear to be the class in the big race, while the Robbie Laingtrained Darabad could be hard to catch if he can reproduce the resilience he showed after leading strongly in the two-mile Sandown Cup last start. The top-rated horse for the day is the Cranbourne-trained Jungle Edge, who will need to overcome a huge weight to take out the 1200-metre open sprint. Mick Bell’s star galloper, who won at group three level and was more than competitive in the feature sprints during the Queensland autumn carnival, has been given 63.5 kilos, down to 60.5 after a three-kilo claim for apprentice Georgina Cartwright.
Tough day HAMPTON PARK BOWLS Midweek Pennant Division 2 Hampton Park 2-43 to Cardinia Waters 14-58 The trip to Cardinia Waters proved to be a hard day for the Parkers as Hampton Park won on only one rink. Stuart Tokley, Ann Westwell, Rob Woff and skip Neville Hendrie had trouble getting within a metre of the jack (9-20) while Lou Soligo, Janice Collins, Helen Lambert and skip Toni Sutton faired only slightly better (14-23). Leading all day, Geoff Ladner, Denise Eastick, Ellen Smith and skip Christine Hendrie had a good win (20-15). Division Six-a-Side Hampton Park 0-31 to Berwick 14-44 Berwick were too strong for the home side by winning on both rinks. Jim Westwell, Marion Battaglia and skip Ray Wood went down by 5 shots (13-18) while Rhonda Diaper, Gwen Clough and skip Brian Diaper went down by 8 shots (18-26). cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

MOTORING
More space for comfort By Ewan Kennedy New Renault Koleos is significantly larger than the model it superseded in August 2016. Increases to cabin space make it well suited to families with children well into their teenage years. Luggage room has also benefited. The topline Renault Koleos Intens diesel 4WD we road tested had genuine leather trim, heated and ventilated front seats (Yippee! seat ventilation always saves the day in Queensland); ambient cabin lighting; an electric panoramic sunroof and a hands-free power tailgate. The Intens also has added safety features (more about this in the Safety segment of this review). Very definitely a Renault, with the prominent diamond sitting in front of a tall bonnet it has chrome trimmed foglight surrounds and door sill plates. French flair is very evident, with chromed strips running from the headlights all the way back to the dummy cooling slots in the front guards. Wide horizontal taillights sit between another Renault diamond at the back. In the Intens the ambient LED lighting can be customised, colour choices are green, blue, sepia, red and violet. Ambience light levels can also be increased or decreased according to your mood. Renault’s latest R-Link 2 multimedia system can be operated by voice control as well as in conventional ways. There’s an Arkamys audio with eight speakers. Koleos Intens uses a larger, 8.7-inch, touchscreen with portrait configuration; a Bose audio system with 12 speakers, subwoofer and digital amplifier. The vertical screen in our review Koleos Intens as the satellite navigation shows a long way ahead. Horizontal screens may look stylish, but they show a shortish distance in front

of the car. A 7.0-inch horizontal screen is fitted to the Koleos Life and Zen models. Bluetooth pairing is logical and quick, however neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto are available in Koleos. We feel that too many of the controls operate through the touchscreen including air conditioning temperature and fan speed which takes too much of a driver’s attention from the road. When introduced in 2016 Koleos was powered by a 2.5-litre petrol engine. A turbodiesel became optional in August 2017, the reason for our re-test of the vehicle. The 2.0 diesel is only sold in the topline Intens model. It provides up to 130 kW of power and 380 Nm of torque. Transmission (petrol and diesel) is by a continuously variable unit. All Koleos models have six airbags; ABS brakes with emergency brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution; electronic stability control; IsoFix child seat anchors; reversing camera; rear parking sensors; and tyre pressure monitoring. As the topline model,
the Intens has advanced emergency braking; forward collision and lane departure warning; side parking sensors; and parking assistance system; front parking sensors; blind spot monitoring; LED headlights; side parking sensors. Added ground clearance of the Koleos compared to many vehicles in this class may prove a bit of a hassle for some people when getting in and out. On a positive side, once you’re in there the view out is excellent. Koleos’ front seats are spacious, soft and comfortable in the French manner. Rear kneeroom and legroom mean that passengers with the same dimensions as myself - I’m a sixfooter in the old money - had no trouble getting comfortable. Three adults can travel in the back without being overly squeezed together, two or three kids makes more sense. When only two back seats are in use the central armrest folds down and has two inbuilt drink containers. The 458-litre luggage area has a floor that sits level with the 60/40 rear seatbacks. These are

easy to use by way of handles located inside the boot. Maximum cargo capacity is 1690 litres. Comfort is a feature of all French cars and the Renault SUV certainly shows others in this Asian dominated class a thing or two on how it can be done. We did a couple of longish country trips over our week of testing and always felt relaxed when we got out of our Koleos. Renault Koleos’ ground clearance is significantly higher than average for this class. Indeed, the Renault’s 210 mm is generally regarded by 4WD people as the minimum for real off-road work. A serious off-roader? No, because the approach and departure angles are quite shallow, but the Koleos certainly has no trouble traversing corrugated dirt backroads. On-road handling is fine, but the leaning towards comfort in the endless comfort/handling equation may not please those wanting a sporting SUV. Sensible folks will love the ease of travel, especially on long distance trips. Diesel consumption was in the five to six litres per hundred range on motorways and seven to nine litres around town. Renault Koleos SUV has typical French comfort and has very good interior space. Well worth adding to your list of test drives in this hotly contested market.
