Spare eyes from UV rays Just like skin, eyes are susceptible to both the short term and long-term effects of UV rays.

According to Dr Priscilla Tricarico, an optometrist at Lynbrook Vision Centre, the facts don’t lie.

Australia has some of the highest levels of UV radiation in the world UV causes 10 times the amount of damage to the eyes than to the skin Children are more sensitive to UV damage of the skin and eyes than adults 57 per cent of Australian parents routinely protect their eyes from the sun, while only 32 per cent of Australian children have their eyes protected from UV It has been estimated 20 per cent of cataracts and almost 50 per cent of pterygium treated every year in Australia is caused by exposure to sun.

Dr Tricarico is urging people to protect their eyes from long-term sun damage with a pair of quality sunglasses and, most importantly, UV blocking lenses. “Enjoying our amazing local area and the outdoors with friends and family are some of the best aspects of living where we do. That’s why we are recommending sunglasses for all adults and kids as a way to encourage everyone to get out and about, but also prevent long-term eye damage. While often people see sunnies as a fashion garment, we see them as an essential item to safeguard against any vision problems in the future.”

The Skin Cancer Foundation's research has shown that the eyes are 10 times more sensitive to UV than skin.

“Often people think that being under a tree or wearing a hat is enough to protect them from harmful UV. However, it is crucial to wear quality lens sunglasses to protect from indirect UV damage from reflections off surfaces such as water, buildings or roads," Dr Tricarico said.

“Also direct sunlight can be more prevalent at this time of year as the sun is lower in the sky especially during the morning and afternoons,

Christmas is busy, it’s often chaotic and it can be daunting for some children, especially when they come face-to-face with Santa Claus.

Get the hang of festive wreath making together

The team at Your Health and Fitness are throwing themselves into fund-raising this Christmas. 175301

Blairlogie Living and Learning Centre will have a colourful Christmas wreath greeting visitors this festive season thanks to Casey councillor Amanda Stapledon.

As Christmas approaches, Cr Stapledon took a break from her council duties to create a crafty Christmas wreath using lolly wrappers and a coat hanger.

She said the easy-to-make wreath was great to give as a thank-you gift to schools, workplaces, family, friends community groups or service providers.

“I’m giving mine to Blairlogie Living and Learning Centre because of the outstanding effort they make every day to provide meaningful experiences to and help develop life skills for adults with a disability and support to their carers,” she said.

Fit to give A Cranbourne gym has come up with a novel idea to help the less fortunate this Christmas.

Staff at Your Health and Fitness in Cranbourne West have designed ugly training tops, a playful take on the traditional cheesy Christmas jumper.

Your Health and Fitness places heavy emphasis on supporting each individual member as well as the wider community.

“We aim to support the community in all aspects – not just health and fitness," said owner Peter Mr Harrison.

“Our Christmas fund-raising campaign is one we hold close to our hearts.

“With several members experiencing hardship at one point or another through their lives, we feel it is important for us and our

more fortunate members to help give back and support them through the adversity they face.

“Christmas is a time for giving, so we are asking our members and the local community to help raise funds by purchasing our limited edition ugly training tops or donating food and toys under the tree located on the gym floor."

Mr Harrison said tops could be purchased in club but were strictly size and colour limited. One hundred per cent of the proceeds will being donated to the Red Shield Appeal.

“The Red Shield appeal helps the most vulnerable Australians throughout the year, and there certainly is no better time to give than at Christmas time."

Casey Cardinia Libraries has erected Forgiving Trees at all its branches in the lead up to Christmas.

People are welcome to contribute items of food or unwrapped gifts for people in need of support.

If donors have library fines, CCL will waive their fees in acknowledgement of their generosity.

Casey Cardinia Libraries CEO Chris Buckingham said the Forgiving Tree was a golden opportunity for library members with overdue items or fines to wipe the slate clean and feel good about it.

“This is the season for giving and we want people across our community to know that if they pay it forward and help out others, we will return the favour,” Mr Buckingham said.

“We know Christmas is a time where lots of households are under pressure to make ends meet.

“As a public library service, we take great pride in providing useful and free services in safe welcoming places.

“By waiving fines and encouraging people to visit our libraries we can bring people together and help celebrate the best things about community life in Casey Cardinia.”

The Forgiving Tree campaign will run until 24 December and all donated goods will go to local charities.

What would be the best part of Christmas for an 11-year-old?

Families coming together on Christmas Day to cut the turkey, listening to grandpa recount stories of Christmas past, or reading the Christmas cracker jokes? No - probably not! It’s the presents - right!

Waking up early on Christmas Day, excitement overflowing, digging deep into the stocking under the Christmas tree, hoping desperately that Santa had left that singular ‘must-have’ toy is a memory that many of us share.

For my generation, the ‘must-have’ was a Tamagotchi or Game Boy. Surely, they were on

everyone’s wish lists in the ’90s!

Of course these days the ‘must-have’ is a new type of technology - far more sophisticated and expensive than our childhood Christmas presents.

Today, Generation Z is all about tablets and iPads. They are the must-have ‘toys’ of 2017!

Even I, as a digital technology teacher, and someone who appreciates the value of such technology, finds it hard to justify that expense at any time of the year - let alone at Christmas time.

Thanks to the right kind of marketing and growing trends in information and communication technology, digital commercialism and consumerism has gone into overdrive with retailers big and small doing all they can to push the latest in trending tech under Gen Z’s noses while simultaneously putting their parents’ noses out of joint.

If this situation is ringing (or jingling) bells for anyone, the last thing they want to be doing is forking out extra dollars for the latest bundle of game apps from Google Play or the App Store to accompany the device that the house

has just been re-mortgaged for.

So, as my Christmas present to parents, here is a list of five free apps to add to that new iPad or tablet device.

These are apps that I have used as a multimedia and robotics teacher and are designed to entertain, inform and educated even the most mischievous of Santa’s elves.

Best of all they are free!

Scratch Jr With Scratch Jr, children learn important new skills as they program their own interactive stories and games. This is a great app to introduce the concept of coding to children. (6+) Think and Learn Code-a-pillar A fun game that needs the player to navigate through a series of maze and number games.

This engaging game helps to develop a child’s problem solving skills via working through solutions to obstacles and basic mathematical problems. (4+) Bee-Bot This app enables children to improve their skills in directional language and program-

ming through sequences of forwards, backwards, left and right (90 degree turn) movements. (5+) Kodable - Coding for Kids This is an award-winning app which is designed to teach computer science to primary students. (4+) BrainPOP Featured Movie An app that has a range of free featured movie topics daily which often tie in to current events, historical milestones and figures, holidays and more. Written with humour and age appropriate voice, BrainPOP’s entertaining and informative animations are recognised across the world. (4+) I hope the five free apps mentioned above bring some Christmas peace - and quiet - over the holiday season.

Feel free to write me a list (remember to check it twice) of apps that keep children definitely and digitally engaged with their learning outside of the classroom.

Art show precedes carols at Rangebank Rangebank Primary Schools students are well and truly in the swing of Christmas as they eagerly anticipate the school’s combined community carols evening and art show on Tuesday 5 December.

The art show runs from 4pm to 5.15pm followed by the community carols beginning at 5.30pm.

Principal Colin Avery said everyone was

welcome to bring a rug and settle in for an Australian- themed festive celebration.

“This is a wonderfully relaxed community event where the children perform for their parents and begin the Christmas festive theme. With a variety of Christmas carols and songs sung by all levels, it will be a great family night,” he said.

Sausages and soft drinks will be on sale

from the school council food stall.

A raffle will raise money to redevelop the senior courtyard and help fund the new multipurpose extension.

Mr Avery said children from all levels would perform on the night with the Foundation and Year 6 students on stage together.

“The school choir will also perform prior to visiting retirement homes later in the month.”

“She’s had her chance, and she doesn’t obviously want to return the money, so stuff her,” he said.

Mr Grant thought the apology note seemed “quite legitimate”.

“Once we read it, we decided among ourselves if she returns the money we’ll let it go and we’ll not do anything about it.”

“If she doesn’t obviously come back with the money, then we may take further action.”

He said no contact phone number was left on the note. “She obviously doesn’t realise once again we have CCTV and we’ll capture you.”

A thief who allegedly stole plants from a garden bed at Cranbourne Public Hall has returned to the scene of the crime to leave an apologetic hand-written note.

Cranbourne Public Hall treasurer Aaron Grant never expected to hear from the alleged thief after she was captured by security cameras ripping up and taking the plants on Sunday 12 November at 7.27pm.

Mr Grant said a woman was filmed on CCTV leaving an apology note under the door on Tuesday 21 November at 4.58pm, with a promise to reimburse the hall for the plants.

The letter, which was signed ‘Deep regrets, Shamed Cranbourne plant thief,’ starts with the words: “I’d deeply like to apologise for my stupid actions of wrongly taking those plants that evening; clearly I wasn’t thinking straight, I truly am sorry and I’d like to pay the $47 back to you on Thursday, so you can replace them”.

The letter continued by saying: “It was a bad choice of mine at the spur of the moment.

Money forwarded to you in an envelope under the front door by 9am Thursday morning.”

Mr Grant said the letter came as a shock, but added the thief still hadn’t left any money as promised by Thursday 23 November.

“I didn’t expect it, but I was hoping she would’ve done the right thing and unfortunately once again she didn’t.”

“I read it and I thought, ‘what the hell’ she actually came back and wrote a letter. I thought I’ll send it to a few people I know in the hall and said, ‘she’ll be back tomorrow and she’ll pay us the money.’”

He said members of the Cranbourne Public Hall decided to give the green-fingered thief the benefit of the doubt, but added: “She still obviously hasn’t done the right thing.” “(She’s) trying to make herself look like she’s apologetic, but really she’s not.”

The theft left Cranbourne Public Hall $47 out of pocket and Mr Hall decided to take to social media, posting CCTV footage on Facebook’s Casey Crime Page to hunt down the culprit.

Every year they roll around, as regular as Christmas - you know who I’m talking about.

Yep, it’s the ever-growing clan of Christmas grinches.

A new one’s born every minute, and an old one dies every year.

And I should know - I was one, back in the day.

And it begs the question - do you grow out of, or into, being a grinch?

As a younger man, I “bah, humbug"ged with the best of them. “Ho-frickin’ho" was another well-used classic.

I decried the commercial face of Christmas. I sneered mightily at its alleged goodwill to all men.

But now I have a little grey snow on the temples of my Christmas roof, I have put away my childish views.

Every year can afford just a little time for merriment - a time in which we put away the calculator and leave our cares to one side for a while.

So a council should be able to find, in its heart and in its coffers, a little love and a little cash to spread some Christmas joy on its main streets - and so should we all.

And let me be cheeky enough to point out that we seem to find public time and space for just about every other “day" - up to and including International Groundhog Day - so a little love for the festive season from our council burghers shouldn’t go astray.

The point is often made that we should be this way all year round - but I think maybe that’s asking a little much.

So let’s focus on the joy of the festive season in this lucky country - and let’s do it with a smile in our hearts and some Christmas decorations in our streets.

Drink driver claim A man accused of killing a mother and daughter in a two-car crash outside Lighthouse Christian College was allegedly intoxicated and disqualified from driving at the time, according to police charge sheets.

Thomas Charles Adamson, 26, of Devon Meadows, wore a neckbrace and sat in a wheelchair during the filing hearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 24 November.

Several times, he dabbed his eyes with a bunched-up tissue as he clutched a water bottle between his thighs.

Adamson faces charges of culpable driving causing the death of 14-year-old Lighthouse

student Xinyu Yuan and her mother Mei-Li Dai. Ms Dai and Xinyu were pulling out in a car onto South Gippsland Highway, Devon Meadows when struck by an oncoming vehicle on the evening of Wednesday, 9 August.

Adamson was also charged with driving while disqualified, under the influence, and with an alleged blood-alcohol reading of between .12 and .165 at the time.

He was also charged with dangerous driving causing Xinyu and Ms Dai’s deaths.

Adamson was bailed to appear for committal mention at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 25 January.

Pearcedale Cricket Club members have been left stumped after callous thieves stole slabs of alcohol from their clubrooms during the early hours of Monday morning, 27 November.

Pearcedale Cricket Club vice-president Andrew Williams said at about 12am thieves made away with about $700 worth of alcohol and a safe that was bolted to the floor after forcing their way into the club’s double aluminium framed glass doors at Pearcedale Recreation Reserve.

He said it was lucky no money was kept in the safe but the intruders “pretty well trashed the front doors,” leaving a damage bill of about $5000.

He said the thieves also took off with about $400 cash from the till float after rummaging through the bar.

“It’s a bit disappointing because we’re getting back on our feet this year after a couple of bad years in terms of no sponsorship.

“We are insured so we hope to get some back from our insurance for the loss of property. Things like this you don’t expect to happen and have to deal with.”

Mr Williams said no cricket equipment was taken and it appeared the intruders knew there was a safe in the cool room.

“They didn’t look anywhere else. They went straight to the safe in the cool room.”

“We had a cupboard which had a lot of apparel in it which they had broken into - once they saw it was apparel they didn’t really care.”

He said the thieves also forced their way through a steel door before breaking a lock on the cool room.

“They knew exactly what they were looking for. They would’ve had some decent equipment to get the safe out. It wasn’t a big safe but it was bolted to the concrete,” adding it would’ve been a “big job to get that out.”

He said no one used the safe, adding “They would’ve got a bit a shock when they went to all that trouble.”

He said the club’s security system was “old and tired” and in need of upgrading.

A teenager was arrested outside his Cranbourne North home on Friday 24 November after allegedly sending threatening social media posts to a metropolitan TV network.

Local police and heavily armed members of the Critical Incident Response Team swooped on the teen’s house in Fairway Boulevard about 4.30pm.

Police confirmed a 17 year-old boy was arrested “without incident” and there were no injuries to either himself or police.

Channel Seven reported the television network’s social media site received a series of social media messages, detailing terror threats about 12.30pm last Friday.

Casey Crime investigation Unit detectives have charged the boy with public nuisance, making false reports to police and using telecommunication device to menace.

Sergeant Tony Henry said it remained unclear who sent the messages, and inquiries would be conducted to confirm who was involved in the incident.

Asked if the social media posts were terrorism-related, he said, “Sort of, but the problem is it’s a kid, so we don’t want to delve too deep.

What is something people don’t know about you?

Well that’s obviously a secret.

How did you get first get involved in theatre?

I was interested in doing costumes for the Escapees as it started when I was in Year 12 and I went along, got involved and the rest is history.

I never thought I would direct a show let alone ever be on stage.

What was your most memorable moment?

Perhaps memorable for the wrong reasons, but my first time on stage scared me almost to death. It was incredibly intimidating and I remember wishing I could take it back at the time and hide away, but I am so glad I did it because I am still here 10 years later and have changed for the better.

What theatre show would you most like to direct or perform in and why?

I hope that one day we can do a full-on musical, with a live band and all the dancing and jazz hands that go with it. Something like The Book Of Mormon (from more recently) or maybe Rock of Ages, Hairspray - something big and loud.

What is your favorite book?

There are far too many to choose from, you’re talking to a bookworm here.

Which six dinner quests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party?

Elvis Presley, Hillary Clinton, Jimmy Fallon, Bing Crosby, Laura Keen, Shonda Rhimes.

What would your last meal be?

Some sort of Mexican food and a very large margarita.

with my friends. I was quite studious but also loved the creative classes. I never like Drama though, which in hindsight is really odd.

Kelly’s taste of victory

By Brendan Rees Kelly’s Motor Club Hotel in Cranbourne has proved a soaring success after celebrating big wins at Australian Hotels Association state awards for excellence.

The hotel took out the overall regional hotel of the year and best casual dining, in front of 1200 guests and professionals of the hotel industry during a gala dinner at The Palladium at Crown on Tuesday 21 November.

Hotel manager Michael Goldie said the team was “gobsmacked” to receive hotel of the year.

“We were rapt at winning the best casual dining. Everyone thought ‘how good is this’.

Then to get the overall hotel we were gobsmacked. After that we couldn’t believe it. We were blown away by winning Best Regional Hotel.

“It was a total surprise when we won it.”

Mr Goldie, an employee of 40 years with Kelly’s Motor Club Hotel said: “We’re a local pub and we want to stay a pub. We don’t really go for the gastropub. We still think we’re still basically a pub.”

He said the hotel took pride in supporting the Cranbourne community.

“We are extremely proud to be a part of Cranbourne’s history and feel our winning contributes positively to our community.”

He said there were close to 90 staff employed with the hotel - “a great percentage local, a great percentage young and a great percentage pursuing further education”.

He said the hotel was also the largest supplier of scholarships in Cranbourne with “$50,000 to local schools this Christmas”.

“Basically 10 primary schools get $5000 each. This is used to help the parents transition their kids into secondary education.

“We’ve been doing this for over 20 years. We also assist various sporting, charity, volunteer,

“We have no particular demographic, catering for seniors, millennials, tradies and vast and varied groups. We’re also pretty popular with private functions.”

He said the menu was modern Australian and embraced parmas, seafood, steaks with European, Asian and American influenced dishes.

“We are a pub, we encourage casual dining and our motto is ‘It’s more fun to eat at Kelly’s

than drink in a restaurant!’”

The judges noted an emphasis on investment in staff training and infrastructure at this year’s awards which resulted in a large number of overall finalists in many of the 40 categories.

The recent case of Nolene Nolan from Hampton Park (“Living in fear", Berwick Star News, 23 November), shows that the Victorian Parliament needs to urgently review the law and expand the legislative powers of the Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal (VOCAT). It must financially compensate victims of crime for psychological harm; other than just for basic expenses and counselling services.

Many reports about crime show how the victims of crime are psychologically harmed by their experience. They are made to feel intimidated, insecure, depressed, unsafe and even suicidal.

Consequently it is not uncommon for them to feel a need to withdraw from their normal daily life in the community. These symptoms mean that the individual’s confidence and psychological health have been compromised.

I notice that the Webb Street area of Narre Warren is once again undergoing a council 'makeover’.

Some years ago now I suggested to the then mayor, Sam Aziz, that in the interests of better traffic flow in the area, Malcolm Court should be made one-way only in from Webb Street to Sylvia Lane.

By doing this, all traffic coming out of that area would then have to use Sylvia Lane and the Webb Street roundabout, which would surely be better than having traffic coming out of Malcolm Court.

Victims of crime should be entitled to be paid 80 per cent of their minimum wage, like any victims of road trauma, for up to one year to help them recover from their traumatic experience. A person’s psychological health is no less important than their physical fitness.

A win for Dr Hope

By Brendan Rees The community has rallied behind a cancer survivor during a High Tea fund-raiser at Wilson Botanic Park in Berwick on Sunday 19 November in her quest to beat the harrowing disease.

Cancer victim Effie Atkins says the community’s response in supporting her campaign to raise money for ‘Dr Hope’ - an oncologist position to support Monash Health’s clinical cancer trials - had been nothing short of amazing.

Effie’s life turned around after she offered herself as a guinea pig for an experimental trial at Monash Hospital - a new form of cancer treatment that mobilises a person’s immune system to fight the disease.

Her tumour has shrunk, and she remains in good health.

The 66-year-old grandmother from Berwick said the High Tea “turned out to be a spectacular success.”

“Almost 100 people paid to attend, and enjoyed a really beautiful afternoon.”

“Music was provided by local choir leader and musician Simon Loveless, and vocalist Georgia Lillycrapp.”

Effie said guest speaker Dr Ben Markman of the Monash Clinical Drug Trials unit explained the purpose of the event, and the fund-raising campaign, adding: “People were very interested to listen to the speech.”

Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate missing 16-year-old Colin McGee. The Cranbourne teen was last seen on Friday 10 November in the Morwell area.

Police have concerns for Colin’s welfare due to his age and the length of time he has been missing.

Colin is described as 170cm tall, thin to medium build, brown hair and brown eyes. Colin is known to frequent the Frankston, Morwell and Preston areas.

INJURY COMPENSATION

Two 14-year-old Cranbourne boys are among four teenagers to have been arrested following an aggravated burglary in Cranbourne North on Wednesday 22 November.

A 15-year-old boy from Narre Warren was also arrested and charged with aggravated burglary, theft, theft of a motor vehicle, aggravated home invasion, theft from a motor vehicle, unlicensed driving and committing indictable offences while on bail.

Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the incident that occurred at a McGarvie Drive home.

The two Cranbourne boys and another 15-year-old from Narre Warren were charged with aggravated burglary, theft, theft of a motor vehicle, aggravated home invasion (steal) offensive weapon, theft from a motor vehicle, unlicensed driving and committing an indictable offence while on bail. An application will be made to remand all four teens in custody.

Casey Council is urging trucks drivers to slow down.

Casey Council is set to unveil $100,000-plus of Christmas decorations at its “first Christmas party of the season” at Bunjil Place on Friday, 1 December.

During the Very Merry Block Party, Casey Choir will sing carols and mayor Geoff Ablett will light up the new bespoke Christmas tree.

Councillor Rosalie Crestani had moved a successful motion for more overt Christmas decorations at Bunjil and throughout the municipality.

“I am delighted that Bunjil Place is now host to this wonderful nativity scene, which helps us to celebrate and recognise the true meaning of Christmas.”

In June, council officers estimated the Christmas tree and life-size nativity scene would cost about $108,000.

The council was also expected to add to the $76,000 annual spend on flags and banners around Casey.

The festivities start at 5pm on 1 December, with the tree lit up at 7.30pm.

Casey Council will set up a trailer in Cranbourne East early next month, reminding truck drivers to slow down as Christmas approached.

The council, in partnership with Victoria Police and VicRoads, intends to place a Speed Alert Mobile (SAM) trailer at the intersection of Casey Fields and Berwick-Cranbourne Road after Mayfield Ward Cr Amanda Stapledon raised concerns in September about speeding trucks in this area.

Safer Communities manager Caroline Bell said: “The primary purpose of the SAM trailer is for placement outside of local schools to remind drivers to slow down, with a number of commitments prior to the end of term.”

“The trailer will send a simple message of ’Red Means Stop’,” she said.

She said council believed the location of the trailer would be appropriate as part of an effort to stop trucks from speeding through the nearby traffic lights.

Cr Stapledon mentioned concerning truck incidents she had witnessed such as speeding B-doubles, and a truck not giving way at a roundabout, during a council meeting on Thursday 9 November.

“I’ve just been ringing the truck companies. They’re really, really good. I’m just saying ‘We’re not going to put up with it anymore - you need to tell your drivers to slow down’.”

She said she even spotted a truck “flying along” at more than 100km/h on the South Gippsland Highway - just days after VicRoads permanently reduced the speed limit to 80km/h - after the road claimed the lives of

Notice of Making of a Local Law Casey Community Local Law 2018.

On 21 November 2017 City of Casey Council made a new Local Law titled Casey Community Local Law 2018.

The following information about the Local Law is provided in accordance with Section 119(3) of the Local Government Act 1989.

Purpose and General Purport of the Local Law; 1. Introduce new definitions and make some amendments to existing defined terms 2. Ability to seek review of decisions made under the Local Law 3. Ability to correct errors made to permits 4. Amend some penalty amounts 5. Create offences relating to; I. Noise and Nuisance from Audible Alarms II. Storage of (registered) vehicles on road III. Smoking within the Bunjil Place precinct IV. Use of Drones on Private Property The Local Law will come into operation on 1 January 2018.

The current City of Casey Community Local Law 2/2010 will be repealed at midnight, 31 December 2017.

For those younger members of the community there will also be an animal farm and additional activities to participate and join in. The Communities in Partnership group is a group of various not-forprofit services in the area of Casey, which looks at supporting those with disabilities in Casey that may also be looking for further community participation.

Jonah has Swans in a spin

By Nick Creely Talented young spinner Jonah Serong represents the future of the Casey-South Melbourne Cricket Club.

The 16-year-old Longwarry product is making waves in the elite Victorian Premier Cricket competition, after a string of impressive white ball performances that have left some of the top batsmen in the state scratching their heads.

In his first season down at Casey Fields, Serong - who has similarities in style and action with former South African captain Johan Botha - started the season in the twos, and despite bowling tightly, was unable to take a wicket in the first four games.

But coach Prabath Nissanka saw enough against Dandenong in Round 4, and called the youngster into the top side to add a different dynamic to his bowling mix.

On debut against Geelong at home on 11 November, Serong bamboozled the Cats to take 2/24 off his 10, before encouraging performances against Frankston Peninsula (0/37 off 10) and Carlton (0/44 off four).

But as the Swans look to resurrect their season, Serong has added the zest in recent weeks, with outstanding displays against Greenvale (1/11 off four), Northcote (3/16) and Melbourne Uni (3/16) in Twenty20s turning heads and frustrating batsmen.

The youngster is the first to admit he’s probably surprised himself with how well he is going so quickly in such a historic and famous competition.

“I didn’t really know what to expect (coming into Premier Cricket) - I couldn’t take a wicket in the twos and was brought up to the ones, and it’s started to happen,” he said.

Serong’s style of bowling isn’t defined as

conventional, but has a love for the game that will get him through any curveballs it throws at him.

“I’m not a massive turner of the ball, and I like to adjust my pace and flight - I’m probably not a traditional off-spinner who turns it, so I like to change it up somehow,” he said.

“I started teaching myself how to bowl spin at a junior level - it’s only been the last couple of years that I’ve had a bit of coaching on it.

“I just enjoy my cricket - if I’m up or down, or bowling well or not well, I still enjoy it.”

While Serong has dominated the junior landscape of the Warragul District for several years, it was a terrific Under 17 National Championships in 2016/17 - where he took 10 wickets at 22.7 at a brilliant economy rate of 3.8 - that sparked his arrival at the Swans.

“I spoke to a few people at Casey about going down there, but making the Under 17 Victorian side and doing well there proved I had the potential,” he said.

And the club couldn’t be happier to have him in their ranks.

“It is his first season, and he’s got great pace variation - he’s not a big turner of the ball yet, but that will come,” Nissanka said of his young spinner.

“The way he takes on the challenges are very good - he’s very positive about his bowling, and he’s learning quickly as well, I’m very impressed.

“He’s a really good talent.”

And Serong himself believes he has a great future at the club, which is building with a host of young players that will take the club forward.

“There are lots of young players there (at Casey) - I think the oldest player at the club is 26, so that’s how young we really are, and we have potential.“

Nervous wait is over for AFL draftees

By Nick Creely Through all the sacrifice and hard work that youngsters have put in all over the country, it all came down to Friday night’s AFL draft, where local TAC club Dandenong Stingrays had one if it’s finest in recent memory.

In total, the Stingrays had three players taken in the first round, and two players taken in the second, with just one player selected by an interstate club.

At pick 35, Berwick local Oscar Clavarino was snared by St Kilda, with the 195cm intercept king joining fellow teammate Hunter Clark as another Stingray to head to Linen House.

As co-captain of the Rays, and of premiership side Haileybury, Clavarino will be earmarked as a future leader of the Saints, and one that could step straight into AFL level and have an impact. “(I’m) really excited - I just can’t wait to be a part of it, and I guess it’s a boyhood dream come true,” Clavarino told Saints Media.

“To a degree it was relief (being drafted), but also excitement - I’m just really happy, and it’s been a dream of mine for so long now, and it’s finally come alive.

“It’s an opportunity to further myself as a person and on the field as well.”

The St Kilda media team was on hand to deliver Saints fans an insight into Oscar’s family and home, with cameras set up to capture the emotional reaction after having his name read out. St Kilda List and Recruiting Manager Tony Elshaug described the young key defender as a “good leader”, with Saints fans excited to see how the defender’s career will unfold.

“We think he is made of the right stuff and as an 18-year-old key defender we think he fits perfectly onto our list. He also played at the Dandenong Stingrays with Hunter, so a couple more Stingers through the door. He’s a Berwick boy who went to school with Josh Battle out at Haileybury,” he said.

“We’re really pleased to have Oscar on board.”

After initially being touted as the Stingrays’ sixth number one draft selection, game breaking midfielder Luke Davies-Uniacke was selected with pick number four to the North 20 STAR NEWS

Melbourne Football Club after surprisingly slipping down the order in what could be the biggest steal of the draft.

As a big bodied midfielder, Davies-Uniacke will add instant class, grunt and leadership to a young Kangaroos midfield, and showcased his immense talent by dragging the Rays back from 50-points down in an elimination final this season.

“I’m over the moon - it’s so surreal, you kind of pinch yourself to see if it’s true and it’s so surreal,” he told SEN radio moments after being drafted.

“I am pretty level about everything - there was a bit of talk (in the media), but I’ve stayed underneath my shoulders and taken everything in my stride.”

St Kilda was the next to pick up a Stingray, selecting midfielder Hunter Clark with pick seven, with the Saints maintaining their commitment to drafting local talent.

The Peninsula boy will add toughness, versatility and an ability to play off a half back or as an inside midfielder after a stellar best-andfairest season with the Stingrays.

Clark’s selection to the Saints means they now have 10 former Dandenong Stingrays on their current list.

It only took another four picks for another Stingray name to be read out, with powerful utility Aiden Bonar selected with pick 11 to the GWS Giants. After initially touted as a number one draft pick, Bonar endured a cruel luck with injury with two consecutives knee reconstructions, but bounced back superbly to storm into first round draft selections by playing a pivotal role in a Haileybury College premiership and during the Stingrays’ finals campaign.

But Bonar will add an element of x-factor to the Giants, where he will initially start as a third tall forward before transitioning into an inside midfielder similar to that of Sydney captain Josh Kennedy.

Tom De Koning was the next to realise his dream, with Carlton selecting the ruck/forward with selection 30 of the draft.

The 200cm big man is a terrific set shot at goal, can play as a ball winning ruckman, and was vital for the Dandenong Stingrays in stages of the TAC Cup before a lacerated kidney ended his season prematurely.

Bears find their hind legs

By Nick Creely The Bears from Berwick have stood on their back two legs and bared their teeth with a wonderful outright victory over Heinz-Southern Districts in round four of DDCA Turf 1 on Saturday.

The Bears jumped a staggering four places on the ladder - from sixth to second - after an extraordinary 25 minutes of cricket sent an ominous warning to the DDCA’s top end of town.

Resuming at 5/32 in pursuit of the Bears’ modest first innings total of 146, seamer James Wilcock left a scarring dent in the Cobras’ batting line-up, picking up where he left off after three late wickets on day one.

Wilcock found the edge of skipper Matt Cox (7) and Michael Davies (0) before the Cobras could even score a run on day two, leaving them 7/32.

The former Dandenong quick picked up two more wickets to finish with the mindboggling figures of 7/9 off 10.5 overs - his third five-wicket haul of the season - with the Cobras rolled for the meagre tally of 46.

Skipper Jarrod Goodes sent the Cobras back in to face the music, and this time it was a more rounded team effort, with Goodes (3/39), Alex Cross (2/6), Cory Bevan (3/22) and Jarrod Armitage (2/23) all combining to skittle the visitors for 130 in just 41.5 overs.

The Bears wasted no time in earning the extra points, slamming on 31 runs to cap off a dominant day’s play.

Hallam Kalora Park (6/270) can thank a brilliant century from Thalaivan Xavier (130) for its mammoth run-chase against Buckley Ridges (269).

Xavier strode to the crease at 1/20 and didn’t leave until his team was in an unbeatable position at 6/247. The class act whacked 10 fours and four sixes from 160 deliveries and received great support from Jordan Hammond

(36) and Leigh Booth (35) along the way.

Springvale South (191 and 2/10) remains undefeated after an impressive day-two performance against Mordialloc (112).

The Bloods limped to a total of 191 before Steve Spoljaric (4/8) snared the early scalps of Brendan (0) and Ryan Morris (0) to leave the home side in all sorts at 3/8.

North Dandenong (8/151) has recovered from a poor start to chase down Cranbourne’s (150) modest total at Casey Fields.

Resuming at 1/0, the Maroons were soon 2/1, then 4/25, before Shane Clark (43) and Clay McCartney (28) led their side to victory.

Cam Kelly (3/29) was best for the hosts.

In other games, Rhys Serpanchy (53) and Kaushyla Gajasinghe (51) scored half centuries as St Marys (6/194dec) made little fuss of its chase against Dandenong West (102 and 2/36), while Christo Otto (76) starred for Dingley (9/206dec) against Narre Warren (139 and 4/116) at Sweeney Reserve.

In Turf 2, Beaconsfield was given a cricket lesson by Narre North in their one-day contest at Perc Allison Oval.

Batting first the home side was rolled for just 70 after two brilliant spells by Nathan Pulham (4/23) and Joel Zietsman (4/27). The North took just 15.3 overs to run down the total, with Josh Tonna (23) and Josh Henry (17) doing well at the top of the order.

In other games Narre South crushed Parkfield to remain undefeated in second spot on the ladder. Chasing 90 for victory the Lions finished on 177 on the back of a terrific half century to John Mirranay (55). The Bears were 5/69 in their second innings when stumps were drawn.

Parkmore (239 and 2/72) remain top of the table after defeating Fountain Gate (169), Silverton (5/193) eased past Lyndale (144), Coomoora (8/254) were a cut above Lynbrook (167) and St Brigid’s/St Louis (3/227) narrowly beat Keysborough (9/223).

Josh Henry gave Narre North a rock-solid start to its chase against Beaconsfield.

A cameo from Dylan Hadfield (59 not out) had the Swans in a prime position to pounce on a second consecutive victory, but the Students held firm to keep the Swans to 5/129 after some excellent bowling at the death by Wes Agar (1/8 off four overs) and Fawad Ahmed (0/20 off four overs).

But nonetheless, it was a weekend of promise after a tough start to the season, and Nissanka believes the momentum is starting to build with the Swans set to tackle Kingston Hawthorn in the first two dayer of the season.

“The weekend will help us a lot with the way we batted (in red ball cricket), and we will take that experience into two day cricket - we need to work hard, and the boys are looking forward to it,” he said.

“We are more suited for two day cricket than shorter formats for sure - hopefully, these young cricketers will do well.”

The Swans are likely to welcome back skipper Lachlan Sperling back for the club’s clash with the Hawks, with the batsman having nursed a shoulder injury.

Casey-South Melbourne may have ended the one day phase of the season with just a 1-9 record, but coach Prabath Nissanka believes his young group will thrive when red ball cricket begins on Saturday.

The Swans broke the duck with its first win of the season on Saturday at Casey Fields against Northcote, with an even performance ensuring they could notch up some muchneeded points before the two day cricket begins.

The Dragons elected to bat, and the fired up Swans bowled with discipline, intent and a hungry attitude, and kept the visitors to 9/109 off their 20 overs.

Nathan Lambden (4/23) continued his rollicking season to tear shreds into the opposition, young spinner Jonah Serong (3/16) was immense with his control, while Peter Sofra (1/19) and Dylan Hadfield (1/15) did an outstanding job to slow the flow of runs in the middle.

And it took a terrific 33 not out to stand in skipper Michael Wallace to find the runs, with the Swans winning the game with seven wickets and 1.5 overs left.

Opening batsman Joel Mitchell (20) and busy middle order player Ryan Eaton (25) also chimed in with some valuable runs.

“I’m happy about the performance - a lot of positives to take out (of Saturday), we bowled brilliantly to keep them to that score, and we backed ourselves with the bat as well, and we batted well,” Nissanka said.

“We were not rushing, and we kept ourselves calm (with the bat) - we knew if we kept wickets in hand, it would be an easy total to chase.

“Everything went to plan which was good.”

On Sunday, the Swans hosted Melbourne Uni, and fell by just 17 runs after some late heroics by all-rounder Dylan Hadfield.

After young Serong (3/16) picked up early scalps to leave the Students 3/11, a brilliant 84 not out off just 61 balls by skipper James McNeil lifted the visitors to 6/146 after at one stage being 6/116.

Disappointing time CRANBOURNE BOWLS After a week’s rest due to the Victorian Open being held last week expectations were high for a good performance for the top side against cross town rivals, Cranbourne RSL. However, opposition skip Neil Drummond and his team had different ideas and Cranbourne lost by 19 shots in a disappointing day played at Cranbourne RSL. The story was a lot brighter when the teams made it home with both the second and third sides winning and a happy atmosphere was evident at the club.

“Despite the top side losing today we are very pleased with our other two sides wins and it is still a happy day for the club,” club chief Chris Griffiths said.

He later went on to comment on the great performance in his rink from club legend Ray Boskell.

“Bosky had another great game today and he continues to make my life easy with the good close bowls he consistently puts down every end,” Griffiths said.

Side 1 Division 2 Cranbourne played Cranbourne RSL away and were soundly defeated by 19 shots which was a disappointing result for the club despite three rinks having good competitive contests.

Skip John McKenna and his crew recorded a five-shot win and skip Barry “the General” Thomas won by four shots. A lapse of concentration on the last end by Skip Frank Byrne and his crew was costly dropping five shots and losing by three shots on the day.

Club selector Doug Boggie, recovering from hand surgery, will be back playing bowls again next week but he hinted that a few changes needed to be made for next week’s game

against Narre Warren.

Side 2 Division 3 A strong 35 shot win at home against Oakleigh was a great result for the club. Three rinks up was a very solid result with a number of standout performances in particular with Club legend Ray “Bosky” Boskell, Joy McLisky, Michael Scotter and a modest Skip and Bowls Chief, Chris Griffiths who won by 17 shots. Skip Joe Byrne and his rink won by 15 shots and Skip Gerry Dudink and his crew won by 13 shots.

Side 3 Division 5 A win against Berwick by 18 shots was an outstanding result for the club particularly playing away. Skip John Kent had a day out and was very pleased with his charges, Bill Sheriff, Frank Coulter and Yvonne Van Der Wees who won by 13 shots and made sure of the overall win for Cranbourne.

Skips Ron Shields and his rink won 7 shots and Scott De Piazza and his crew won by 4 shots.

Saturday Pennant - Round 7 Side 1 Division 2 Cranbourne 74 were defeated by Cranbourne RSL 93 (G Wright, Hunt, Helle, F Byrne 20-23, P O’Day, Colthup, Barrenger, Lyfield 8-33, Taylor, Blyth, Hardy, McKenna 22-17, and L Wood, Worstelling, Elgar, Thomas 24-20).

Netballers are spreading their wings

By David Nagel Representatives from the Casey Netball Association are spreading their wings after earning selection for several tournaments to be played across Australia.

Brooke Hunter, Isabella O’Shanassy and Brooklyn Prescott have been selected to represent Victoria in the Under 12s at the prestigious School Sport Australia Pacific School Games in Adelaide, beginning on Monday 3 December.

Darcy McMahon, Olivia Helder, Scarlett Trotter, Isabelle Simonton, Hayley Woolfe and Seb Grammeri have been selected for this week’s Junior Indoor Nationals in Queensland, while Daniel Evans will represent Victoria in the Under 23 section of the Australian Men’s and Mixed Netball Association (AMMNA) championships to be held in Sydney in April next year.

Casey Netball Association Squad and Marketing Coordinator Holly Booth said the association was super proud of the player’s achievements.

HAMPTON PARK BOWLS The result went all the way down to the wire against Narre Warren on Saturday with Hampton Park claiming an exciting win that was decided with the last two bowls of the day.

Division 2 Hampton Park 13-76 defeated Narre Warren 5-75 The highlight of the day was performed by Shane Collins, Stan Hatch, Mark Paton and skip Chris Barnes with the rink winning by 17 shots (28-11). Geoff Ladner, Andrew Brandolin, Neville Hendrie and skip Warwick Hardy lost the lead, after dropping six shots, but fought back for a draw (20-20). Hurt by vengeful gods

By Russell Bennett The cricket gods giveth - and the cricket gods taketh away.

That seemed to be the story for the Cardinia Cricket Club on Saturday when a vicious storm threatened to ruin a magnificent run-chase against Upper Beaconsfield at E Gunton Oval.

The time was 5.30pm; the Bulls set for victory at 5/218 with 10 overs left - just 19 runs short of their intended target of 237.

Then the skies opened and the game seemed headed for a draw.

But the Bulls were having none of it.

Though there was still some light rain in the air at 6pm, skipper Alex Nooy and his teammates took matters into their own hands to ensure they could get on to the ground and finish what they’d started.

The Bulls resumed day two at 0/2 with Nooy and Ben Parrott at the crease.

But just as they seemed set, Parrott (22) and Nooy (30) were both removed and were joined soon after by Brad Reiner - stumped off gun Upper Beac spinner Scott Pitcher.

But from there, two young Bulls with plenty to prove with the willow - Matt Welsh (58) and Travis Wheller (44) - combined for a 79-run stand that had their side well back on the path to victory.

Welsh then showed maturity well beyond his years in partnership with Ricky Campbell (40) before Welsh ultimately fell at 5/214. Just minutes later - the rain fell.

After another short wait to remove excess water from the pitch, play was to resume at 6.30. Suddenly, their hopes of a crucial win were revived.

But the Maroons took 4/10 to have the Bulls suddenly staring down the barrel of defeat at 9/224 - still needing 13 runs from the final wicket.

It all came down to the last over, and while Alex was the star recently with his blistering ton against Emerald, this time it was his brother Aidan’s turn - belting a six and a single off the final over to secure a famous win.

Speaking of Emerald, it was obliterated on the second day of its round six clash at home

against Pakenham.

The Lions resumed on day two at 4/108 needing just another 31 runs to claim first innings points.

Sensing blood in the water, they went in for the kill - declaring at 5/145 (off the back of an unbeaten half-century from Troy McDermott) and sending the Bombers back in.

The hunt for outright points was well and truly on for Pakenham skipper Dom Paynter and his men, and the Bombers’ second in-

nings was nothing short of disastrous - rolled for just 61 with only two batsmen, Jason Burns (13) and Sam Stapleton (12), making double figures.

Tom Tyrrell was devastating to Emerald’s top and middle orders, finishing with 4/13 from his 12 overs - which included seven maidens - while Paynter (2/14), Jason Williams (2/12), and Chris Smith (2/7) took two scalps apiece.

The Lions then closed out their rout, finishing on 2/56 from just nine overs in their second innings with Smith (26 not out) and Williams (12 not out) leading the charge.

At Tooradin, meanwhile, Merinda Park started day two in chase of the Gulls’ 209 and a potentially stunning win.

But it was an all too familiar story for Merinda Park with impressive opener Daniel McCalman (47) the only one of his side’s top four batsmen to fire.

Yet with McCalman’s wicket at 3/68, Jordon Thomas (87 not out) stepped up to the plate.

Though he was struggling for support around him, he kept a calm head and compiled a stoic, gutsy half-century - even getting to within reach of a memorable ton - before the resistance finally ended at 163.

Russell Lehman (2/27), Kade Burns (2/27) and Dylan Sutton (2/1) were the multiple wicket-takers for the home side.

Meanwhile, at Denhams Road, Kooweerup continued on its barnstorming run with a commanding win over finals aspirant Clyde.

Glen Tuckwell and Gavin Britt resumed on Saturday at 2/7 - a position their side couldn’t ever recover from - the Cougars were ultimately dismissed for 165 in 44 overs.

Shane White (31 not out) and Britt (30) top-scored for the visitors while Jack Bacon (3/25), Mitch Davey (2/33), Matt Bright (1/8), Paul Bright (1/8), and Chris O’Hara (1/9) were Kooweerup’s day two wicket takers.
