Family in frame

By Casey Neill This year’s Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Award-winner has family firmly in the picture.

Picture frame supplier Lifestyle Brands International won the top award at the Wednesday 22 November presentation night, as well as the corporate social responsibility gong.

Buildsafe also took home two awards from the event at Atura Hotel, Eumemmerring, in the large business and employment categories.

The small business title went to South East Brewing Company, the retail honour to Illusion, and the innovation award to Jurgen’s Swiss Bread Company.

Chisholm Institute student Caitlin Whitney won the Youth Enterprise Award.

Chamber president Paul Broom said the awards program was about recognising, honouring and celebrating business achievement in the area.

He was on the judging panel with former SRX Global general manager Jeff Malone and South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) executive officer Adrian Boden.

The trio visited all nominees and had “some robust discussions” on who to choose.

The chamber held four breakfasts throughout the year, revealing three business nominees plus a youth candidate at each event.

It has been around for 70 years and its mission is to co-ordinate, develop and facilitate opportunities for regional businesses to work together, thrive and contribute to the local community.

Lifestyle Brands produces 80 per cent of its designs in-house to keep its products ontrend, sends out a team to ensure stock on the shelves is looking good, and has created an electronic stock management system for easy monitoring from order to delivery.

In 2011, Lifestyle Brands established The Cambodian Rural School Trust to sponsor students and end the poverty cycle.

“We go out to the poorest villages in Cambodia and we find bright students that don’t have an opportunity to be educated,” national sales manager Maria Jakovljevic said.

“One hundred per cent of all the funds go straight to the community. There’s no overheads.”

The sponsorship funds education, health and dental care, life skills courses and living allowances.

Students who’ve received assistance now manage the organisation and receive mentoring from Aviv.

“They now are the lucky ones because they’re getting an opportunity,” Ms Jakovljevic said.

Lifestyle Brands International is a family business that started 35 years ago “in an area which is about the size of this stage”.

Uri Palti gestured to the space, which measured just a few metres, as he accepted the top prize at the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.

The home decor company picked up the Corporate Social Responsibility Award earlier in the evening, held at the Atura Hotel on Wednesday 22 November.

Uri’s son Roni accepted that honour.

“We’ve put a lot of effort into the community here and overseas and we’re truly proud to win this,” he said.

He returned to the state with his father to accept the overall Business Award.

“This is not my brother. This is my eldest son,” Uri joked.

He said his other son, Aviv, also played a key role in the business.

“Now we have a third generation working,” he said, proudly announcing that his granddaughter had joined the team.

Lifestyle Brands employs about 70 people - “not all family members” - and is based in Noble Park.

It started out as a retailer in The Glen shopping centre, selling photo frames and albums.

The Palti father and sons team identified an opportunity to import its own products.

Today they stock more than 6000 products and supply more than 4000 trade customers throughout Australia, New Zealand, Asia and Europe.

Brewers feel the force

SMALL BUSINESS AWARD

Brothers Callum and Nat Reeve were overwhelmed when they walked on stage to accept an award for their burgeoning brewery.

South East Brewing Company in Dandenong South won the Small Business award at the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards at Atura Hotel on Wednesday 22 November.

“This is an amazing honour to be nominated with businesses I respect so much,” Callum said.

“We grew up going to the Dandenong Market. It’s such an exciting place.”

Nat interrupted: “I lost Darth Vadar at Dandenong Market.”

To laughter, Callum clarified the local icon held “some sad memories, too”.

“It’s great to be part of this Dandenong business community,” he said.

“I’m so proud to have won this. It’s a really great honour.”

Greg Cusack from Ashfords presented the award, available to companies with a turnover less than $10 million and less than 25 staff.

Callum and Nat first tried their hand at making cider for a friend’s wedding in 2012, using apples from an Officer orchard.

Nat studied science at university and was a passionate home brewer. Callum had a background in wine.

“I’d seen the growth in cider in the couple of years leading up to when we started. We knew that this was a really good product,” Callum said.

An artist who works on computer games designed the South East Brewing Company packaging.

“We always try and stay a step ahead of the market and really look at what people love at the moment and what are they going to love next,” Callum said.

“You really have to delight your customers and I think that’s what we do.”

They’re exporting beer to Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore and are now tapping into China.

The company has 10 employees and is continuing to grow.

It’s about to welcome its own canning line to help with production efficiency, removing the need to bring in a mobile canning line each time a brew was ready.

Emotion and bread rises

Eduardo and his wife Maria bought Jurgen’s from a small group of bakers who’d established it in 1995.

They’ve now handed over the reins to Nelissa and her husband, Paul.

The business produces about 200 products, including artisan breads and rolls.

It has a dedicated product development team that works to improve existing products and develop new ones.

Jurgen’s has invested in automation equipment, with one line able to produce up to 36,000 units per hour.

“I feel choked up. I’m going to get teary, actually.”

Nelissa Sousa accepted the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Innovation Award for Jurgen’s Swiss Bread Company at a presentation night at Atura Hotel on Wednesday 22 November.

“This is my dad,” she said, gesturing to Eduardo Rato standing on stage beside her.

“Years ago we bought Jurgen’s Swiss Bread.”

She said it was a small store in Cheltenham at the time. Nelissa said her dad asked her “are you with me?” and they were away.

“I started as a sales rep,” she said.

She said they’d come a long way since 2003.

Jurgen’s is now in Dandenong, operates seven days, employs close to 100 people and boasts Goodman Fielder, Nando’s, Etihad Stadium and the ALH Group as clients.

The business recently started suppling Subway with bread rolls and is looking at expanding its physical presence interstate.

Business development manager Kon Bangtragoulas said Jurgen’s recently added an organic burger bun to its product offering and received the “best milk bun” title from Goodman Fielder following a sample of 50 bakeries.

“A lot of factors contribute to good bread,” he said, providing climate as an example.

The twin win Buildsafe co-founder Peter Horton “certainly wasn’t expecting” to accept a Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce business award.

He ended up taking home two.

The Keysborough-headquartered company won both the Large Business and Employment awards at the chamber’s presentation night at Atura Hotel on Wednesday 22 November.

“It’s more about all the people that work with us than myself,” he said accepting the Large Business nod.

“It’s a great honour.”

Jason Ashton from Macpherson Kelley presented the employment honour, and told guests that Buildsafe was a client of the Dandenong-based law firm “and a fantastic business to deal with”.

He said Mr Horton looked after his staff exceptionally well, “against our advice sometimes”.

Mr Horton said: “We put a lot of effort into our staff and we get a lot out of them.”

Back in 2001, the Buildsafe team was calling 10 builders a day, staying up all night building equipment, and delivering it to sites the following day.

Its founders wanted to bring professionalism to the scaffolding industry, and to increase both safety and productivity.

“We’ve designed most of our products if not all of them,” Mr Horton said.

“One of the key factors has been the ability of our staff to put it up safely.”

It now employs more than 400 people and builders from across Victoria, New South

Wales and Queensland come to the company for solutions, not just products.

“We’ve still got a lot of growth left in Melbourne but Sydney’s our big one,” Mr Horton said.

Buildsafe also has a focus on mental health after losing a worker a few years ago.

“If you’ve got happy people at work you’re running a better business,” he said.

Cars are go

By Casey Neill Caitlin Whitney is overcoming obstacles and impressing her colleagues in the auto repair industry.

The 20-year-old accepted the Youth Enterprise Award at the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards presentation night at Atura Hotel on Wednesday 22 November.

“Thanks to my boss and my teacher, Ron,” she said.

“I couldn’t be there today without them, so thank-you.”

Chisholm Institute CEO Maria Peters presented the award.

“It is a celebration of youth,” she said.

“What Chisholm exists to do is help young people find their calling.”

Caitlin started her studies in July last year and is working on a certificate three in light vehicle mechanical technology.

The Langwarrin resident works at P and D Automotive Dandenong.

Chisholm Institute automotive instructor Ron Locandro said Caitlin revealed to him that she had visual dyslexia, but he said it hadn’t held her back.

“She is showing real good leadership,” he said.

Mr Locandro said it was even more impressive to see in a male-dominated industry.

Caitlin plans to finish her apprenticeship and become qualified, then return to study so she can work in the mines.

She’s worked on vehicles since she was a young girl, has helped her dad with repairs and built go-carts.

Living up to the Illusion

By Casey Neill Dandenong-based Illusion Australia pours 10 per cent of its revenue into advertising.

General manager Nick Smith said the family-owned manufacturer and supplier also established showrooms in heavy traffic areas for incidental promotion.

These measures have contributed to Illusion becoming a household name.

Mr Smith was unable to attend the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards at Atura Hotel on Wednesday 22 November to accept the Retail Award for Illusion.

Greater Dandenong councillor Angela Long instead presented the trophy to chamber president Paul Broom.

“I’ll take it home!” he said to laughter.

Mr Smith told the chamber breakfast where Illusion was announced as a nominee that the company invested heavily in research and development.

“We’re developing products that won’t be available for two years,” he said.

The company has been around for more than 25 years. It employs about 150 people, including a consulting team that can meet clients in their homes.

It has grown about 17 per cent year-on-year for the past five years through expansion into Tasmania and Western Australia.

“If we’re in the Sydney market in two or three locations it would certainly bolster our revenue,” Mr Smith said.

He said there were also plans to build a new manufacturing facility and increase the distribution capability of Illusion’s current headquarters.

Two injured in car flip Emergency crews freed two people from their overturned car on Stud Road on Wednesday 22 November.

The CFA was called to the Dandenong North scene about 9.15pm.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics treated two men, one aged in his thirties and the other in his twenties, for minor injuries and took them to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition.

‘Slum’ fight won

By Casey Neill Dandenong residents have won a four-year battle to save their streets from becoming “slums”.

Planning Minister Richard Wynne announced on Wednesday 22 November that he’d approved Dandenong Planning Scheme Amendment C182.

“This is huge for the people of Dandy,” key campaigner Silvia Mastrogiovanni said.

“We are looking forward to seeing the fine print and hope there are no surprises.”

With neighbour Carmel Puglisi she founded the Dandenong Community Association to advocate for change.

They’d seen too many cramped apartments

cropping up in streets surrounding their homes with next to no open space for the people who lived in them.

“We started this for Dandy,” she said.

“The smaller the spaces became for people to live in, the more you could see this place becoming a place where people didn’t want to stay and live, they would just be stuck here until they could get somewhere better.

“It would become a transient slum.”

The amendment is now part of the planning scheme, which set the requirements for developments.

Mr Wynne said the changes would concentrate new housing growth into areas best suited to cater for more people.

Building heights will be capped at eight me-

tres in the Neighbourhood Residential Zone and there’ll be new setback, landscape and open space requirements.

In August last year, the Journal reported that Greater Dandenong Council had sent the amendment to Mr Wynne for final approval.

More than 620 submissions informed the document, most expressing concern about unit blocks in streets that were predominantly home to single-storey dwellings.

The amendment the council approved rezoned some areas pegged for growth to the lower-density General Residential Zone to protect them from high-density development.

It also required townhouses in the General Residential Zone - which makes up 70 per cent of the municipality - to double the minimum

ground level open space to 50 square metres.

“This will mean better quality living for those who live in such townhouses, but also a better experience for neighbours in terms of visual bulk and parking impacts,” councillor Matthew Kirwan said.

Ms Mastrogiovanni said the changes were 10 years overdue.

“It’s for the good of the town, and the future of the town, and the future of those that are living in it,” she said.

“We have fair play. We have justice for people.

“People get a decent space to live in, and don’t get exploited.

“It’s a win for the little people.”

Terror in the home

By Casey Neill “I will never forget the birthday that he held me hostage at gunpoint and refused to let me leave the house.”

Rebecca, not her real name, shared her harrowing story of physical, emotional, sexual and financial abuse at the fifth annual Walk Against Family Violence in Dandenong on Tuesday 21 November.

“Family violence is everyone’s responsibility,” she told the hundreds of people who’d made their way from Dandenong Market to Harmony Square via Lonsdale Street holding placards and wearing T-shirts bearing slogans opposing family violence.

Rebecca has volunteered with the Safe Steps Family Violence Response Centre since 2007.

“Safe Steps has helped me to reclaim my voice and allowed me to channel all that hurt, anger and frustration I was feeling regarding structural and systemic failures into being part of positive change,” she said.

She met the man who would abuse her for three-and-a-half years when she was 22 years old, in 2001.

She’d just returned from backpacking around Europe, was living with her two best friends and was studying at uni.

“Like many abusive men, he gave me no reason initially to think he was capable of extreme violence against me,” she said.

But a month later he started making jokes at her expense to his friends and calling her derogatory names.

“This escalated fairly quickly into threats and violence, with the first incident being him chasing me down the road with a knife,” she said.

“He was extremely controlling of who I spent time with. It suited him to isolate me from my friends and family.”

He turned her friends against her and they moved out. His brothers moved in.

These three men could assist police with inquiries regarding three robberies.

“He even threw boiling water at me one time.

“Each day became about survival and I felt like I was living in a war zone.

“Home became a prison for me.”

She dropped out of uni and explained away injuries at work, humiliated.

Rebecca tried to leave several times.

“Every time I would start packing to leave, he would hold a knife at my throat and say that if I left him he would kill me and bury me in the back yard,” she said.

She developed depression and became suicidal. Once she did escape he stalked her for 10 years.

One night she felt it was not safe to return home, landed in a vulnerable situation and was raped by a stranger.

Rebecca said the system consistently failed her. She developed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

She said family violence was the biggest contributor to ill-health and premature death in women aged 15 to 44.

“It is the consequence of discrimination against women in law and in practice and a persisting inequality between men and women,” she said.

“Violence against women and girls is not inevitable.

“Prevention is possible and essential.”

Rebecca said White Ribbon Day, on 25 November, was also the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Until Human Rights Day on 10 December, there’ll be 16 days of activism against genderbased violence to generate public awareness and bring about change.

Rebecca urged anyone experiencing family violence to call Safe Steps on 1800 015 188 for help.

‘Sense’ needed to fight family violence

He was a guest speaker at the fifth annual Walk Against Family Violence in Dandenong on Tuesday 21 November.

Family violence survivors were among the walkers who made their way from Dandenong Market to Harmony Square down Lonsdale Street in a united stand against the scourge.

Chalida, from Springvale, was one. She took part this year for the first time.

“I don’t want other women to go through what I went through,” she said.

She walked with friends and was thrilled with the turnout.

Chantelle, from Dandenong South, said the crowd showed how strongly the community felt about the issue.

“It’s about people standing up for something that shouldn’t be going on,” she said.

The With One Voice Choir welcomed the walkers into Harmony Square with an “uplifting” performance of Stand By Me and proud Wurundjeri woman Georgina Nicholson performed a welcome to country.

Mayor Youhorn Chea said every voice could make a difference and everyone had a role to play in creating a violence-free community for all.

Mr Sheedy congratulated Greater Dandenong on leading in the area.

“When I grew up, I saw a lot of violence,” he said.

He said the message then was “turn a blind eye, pull down the blinds”.

“When I look back it’s probably one of the most pathetic comments I’ve heard,” he said.

“Family violence happens when people are frustrated, annoyed, can’t handle some parts of their life so we’ve got to be there to help them through that.

“I think that time out, relaxing music, the ocean, gardening - they’re just some of the best refuges I have.

By Casey Neill Police are hunting three men over three violent robberies committed in 30 minutes in Springvale.

A 50-year-old man was knocked unconscious and suffered a suspected broken jaw in the third incident.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Craig West said the first incident occurred at the Sandown Park Railway Station about 8.30pm on Thursday 16 November.

The victim, 28, from Springvale, thought he was meeting up with someone to sell his phone after advertising it online.

Three men assaulted him and took his bag.

“There was a struggle and he was punched,” Det Sgt West said.

About 9pm, a 21-year-old man walked past a car park on Sandown Road and noticed three men of African appearance sitting there.

The trio approached him from behind and one grabbed him around the neck.

Another man punched him to the face and pushed him to the ground.

They stole his backpack, which contained cash. The victim suffered minor injuries.

The third victim was walking on Flynn Street, into Warner Reserve, just after 9pm when three men of African appearance struck him from behind as he walked past.

Det Sgt West said he was knocked to the ground, suffered a suspected broken jaw and was punched and kicked unconscious.

The men stole a “substantial amount” of cash and his mobile phone while he was out.

He was taken to hospital.

Police released images of men they believe could assist with their inquiries.

“This doesn’t include the all-too-common rear-enders, side swipes and near misses which not only causes injuries, inconvenience, cost of repairs and being without your car, these accidents bring Springvale Road and Princes Highway to a standstill.”

Roads Minister and Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said Mr Guy’s “embarrassing thought bubble would cut Endeavour Hills in half”.

“He’d ban right turns at the intersection of Heatherton Road and Hallam Road - pumping traffic into surrounding streets,” he said.

“An underpass would make the intersection a no-go zone for pedestrians while simply

shifting traffic down to the next intersection.”

Mr Donnellan said that for four years, the previous Liberal government didn’t invest in road projects or maintenance.

“Traffic backed up across the state while the Liberals sat on their hands,” he said.

“We’re widening the Monash, the M80 Ring Road and the Tulla.

“We’re upgrading the suburban roads that people rely on every day - like Thompson’s Road and Narre Warren North Road - just to name a few.

“And we’re building the congestion busting major road projects that will get trucks out of suburban streets - the West Gate Tunnel and North East Link.”

Sod turn to set city soaring skywards Work has started on what will be Dandenong’s tallest building.

On his last day in office, outgoing Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti turned the first soil on the Spectra Building project on Wednesday 15 November.

The Thomas Street tower will stretch 20 storeys skyward when complete and be home to the city’s first 4.5 star hotel, 56 apartments and retail shops.

“Not only will this development visually change Dandenong’s skyline, it represents a significant milestone in the revitalisation of central Dandenong,” Cr Memeti said.

Martyn Barnes, managing director of Spectra developer Barnes Capital, said he was proud to be part of the Revitalising Central Dandenong (RCD) project.

“The Dandenong community is growing and changing in ways we can only begin to imagine,” he said.

“We are excited and proud to be part of the

growth and change of this vibrant and diverse community.”

The State Government announced RCD in 2006 as a $290 million, 15 to 20-year project involving seven hectares.

It is expected to attract more than $1.2 billion in private sector investment.

More than $500 million has been invested to date and several key projects are underway or complete, including the Dandenong Civic Centre, the government services building, Quest apartments and the new Australian Tax Office site.

Competition from neighbouring areas in the 1990s and early 2000s took retail, entertainment and amenity facilities from Dandenong and the area declined.

RCD is encouraging new development and job-creating economic activity.

A man accused of indecent exposure and a lewd act in front of a 10-year-old rider on Eastlink Bike Trail has claimed he was innocently relieving himself of cramp.

The man indicated that he would plead not guilty during a mention hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 20 November.

According to police, he was lying beside the bike path with his pants down in full view of passing cyclists about 4.30pm on Sunday 18 June.

A boy passing by told police that the accused was performing a lewd act while his pants were down.

The boy’s step-father, who was riding 10 metres behind the boy, said he saw the man pull up his pants and keep his hands inside them.

The man was asked by the step-father what he was doing.

“I do nothing,” the accused allegedly replied.

The accused, who fled on his bike, was photographed by the step-father at the scene.

He was subsequently identified by the public after police released the picture.

Upon his arrest, the man gave a no-comment interview to police, the court heard.

A defence lawyer told the court that there was an “innocent explanation”, which would be supported by “further medical material”.

According to the accused, he had been cycling on the path as he’d done for many years and not done anything “remotely like this in his life”.

During his ride, he was overcome with cramping and numbness in the “upper thigh area”, the lawyer told the court.

With a history of two heart stents and a hernia, the trained first-aider said he was concerned by the continuing symptoms even after he stopped cycling.

He laid down up to 15 metres from the path.

And in a “blind panic”, he tried to “massage” blood flow into the area.

When he realised there were people nearby, he was “horrified”, pulled up his pants and left the area, the lawyer said.

There were, however, layers of clothing shielding any indecent exposure, the lawyer told the court.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said alleged sexual acts in front of a child were not tried at a suburban court.

The case was set to be heard at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 1 December.

Springvale’s Spaghetti Junction will go underground if the Coalition wins next year’s state election.

The Liberal and National parties announced their Get Victoria Moving plan on Monday 20 November.

Leader Matthew Guy pledge to remove traffic lights and roundabouts at 35 intersections, including Princes Highway and Springvale, Centre and Police roads in Springvale, and Heatherton and Hallam roads in Endeavour Hills.

The overall project will cost between $4.1 and $5.3 billion and Mr Guy said it would cut congestion and make roads safer.

“Removing these suburban congestion hotspots will make our roads safer and keep traffic flowing which means less time spent sitting in gridlock and more time at home with family and friends,” he said.

“It also means people like tradies, couriers and salespeople who use the roads to get between jobs, will be able to do so more quickly.

“This project will create thousands of jobs in the construction phase.”

Mr Guy said another 20 intersections would join the list following community consultation.

If the Coalition wins government next November, he pledged to complete 30 grade separations in the first term.

Liberal candidate for Mulgrave Maree Davenport said Spaghetti Junction was the third worst intersection in Melbourne according to this year’s AAMI Crash Index.

“It takes a ridiculously long time to get across the multi-lane and multi-turn intersection to get anywhere,” she said.

“Between 2012 and the end of 2016, there were five fatal crashes on Springvale Road, with a further 159 accidents resulting in seri-

… BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE The editor’s desk Stop and think for a moment: what’s the worst thing about life in our suburbs?

Some would say crime, lack of jobs, or maybe a lack of infrastructure, maybe even a transient community or a lack of connectedness.

But I’d argue - and call it a First World problem if you will - that road congestion is the real issue.

How many of our road rage incidents come from the sheer, mind-numbing frustration of inching your tonne or so of metal along the Monash?

Of course, the Monash ranks highly on the hate list. But that’s just the beginning.

What about Racecourse Road in Pakenham, the dreaded Berwick at school pick-up time, Cranbourne’s main street or the peak-hour gridlock that surrounds Dandenong?

Nowhere else in Melbourne do we see such a flood of vehicles without the infrastructure to support them, as we do in the South-East.

And if anyone is bold enough to suggest a congestion charge, taxing by kilometres driven, or any other punitive actions against car owners, let me blow the whistle right now. It’s not on.

Cars created this wide brown land.

They are an Australian birthright. And you can prise them from our cold, dead fingers.

Technology, which created this, may yet save us. Futurists suggest that fleets of self-driving cars will make car ownership redundant. There will be fewer of them, they’ll interact together, and they’ll simply go away when you don’t want them (as if that could ever happen).

The South-East shall rise again ... on four wheels.

Blame game

A 42-year-old registered sex offender has blamed an acquired brain injury for failing to report multiple email, social media and dating site accounts to police.

Stuart Tizard, of Noble Park, pleaded guilty at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 20 November to 15 charges of failing to comply with his reporting obligations.

This year, police discovered Tizard’s two unreported email addresses, as well as his ‘peter12346’ user-name account on dating site ‘Choice of Love’ and ‘11 secret’ account on the Zoosk dating site.

He also set up five unreported Twitter accounts and three unreported Instagram accounts.

Tizard told police he had suffered a brain injury and couldn’t remember anything before September 2016, prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Tim Barlow told the court.

He had no comment to the allegations, stating he couldn’t remember.

“I’ve been bashed in the head with an iron bar, and everything since then is wiped out.”

Tizard had been placed on the state’s Sex Offender Registry since 2005. He was also explained about upcoming changes to his reporting obligations in May 2015, Lead Sen Const Barlow said.

Tizard had previously reported changed email addresses, mobile numbers and internet service providers to police.

Magistrate Julie O’Donnell noted the disability pensioner had a “complex background”, including an undiagnosed intellectual disability.

“His intellectual functioning is very relevant in terms of complying with this register.”

Ms O’Donnell requested a fresh psychological assessment to “work out what’s going on with him”.

Tizard was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court for sentencing on 12 February.

Keysborough’s Chandler Reserve is safe from development, thanks to a community campaign.

Keysborough MP Martin Pakula met locals at the Maralinga Avenue site on Tuesday 21 November to announce the good news.

Phil Brown led a community plea to retain the space after learning it was part of the disused Maralinga Primary School block, but the council had maintained it for community use for more than 40 years.

“This wasn’t even a particularly long or bitter campaign,” Mr Pakula said.

“This was Phil Brown and a bunch of local community members making it clear to government via myself as the local member that this park was important to people and you wanted it saved.

“This wasn’t one of those situations where a minister had to have his arm twisted.

“I raised this issue with (Education Minister) James (Merlino) only a couple of weeks ago and he agreed almost immediately that this was a reserve worth saving.”

He said there would now be discussions between the department and Greater Dandenong Council about managing the site.

“That’s still to be worked through,” he said.

“What we wanted to do today was put the community’s mind at ease.”

When the Maralinga campus closed, students moved to Chandler Park Primary School.

The Education Department declared the schoolgrounds surplus to requirements and announced it would be sold, and the classrooms were demolished earlier this year.

“The future needs of the precinct will be discussed and considered as part of the consultation with the council and community,” Mr Pakula said.

Mr Brown said it was “good to see that the

He said hundreds of people used it each day for health, wellbeing and recreation.

Mr Brown started a Facebook group to rally residents and asked the council to intervene, and received support from Councillor Roz Blades.

walking track twice a day for nearly 20 years.

He said he was happy with Mr Pakula’s announcement.

Grant Johnston said the news was fantastic, and he’d regularly kicked a footy around the park.

“It’s really good to have this space for everyone to interact,” he said.

“I think it’s a really good win for the community.”

100 years ago 29 November 1917 The Referendum On Tuesday a meeting convened by the president of the shire Cr Colenso was held at the town hall, the object being to form a local committee to assist the conscription campaign.

Cr Colenso presided and explained clearly what was required, and also welcomed Mr Groves MLA who was present.

It was resolved that all present form themselves into a committee with power to add.

In supporting the motion, Mr Groves said that everyone must support the movement in order to obtain a solid ‘yes’ vote or they would cut themselves adrift from the old country.

Mr Cruickshank and Mrs Talbot were appointed joint hon secretaries, and local institutions are to be written to and asked to support the campaign.

It was also decided to arrange for a houseto-house canvass.

Shire councillors are to be asked to deliver addresses in favour of conscription.

At a public meeting to be held at the Dandenong Town Hall on Monday 3, Miss Martin and Mr Sampson MHR will deliver addresses in favour of ‘yes’ campaign.

50 years ago 28 November 1967 Cattle prices take a plunge Victorian farmers “unloading” cattle before they fell victim to the drought have broken all previous yarding records at Dandenong Market and prices have slumped to the lowest level in years.

Obviously fearing that the drought will continue to affect the condition of their cattle, many farmers are sending big consignments

to the market.

Normally peak yarding at the market are not recorded until January but an all-time record number of cows was sold last week.

More cows were sold at the Dandenong Stock Market than any other market in Victoria.

The recent week of near-century heat had seared valuable pasture making it insufficient for agistment of cattle through what looks like being a long hot summer.

The choir formed by not-for-profit group Creativity Australia welcomes anyone from any background and singing ability.

The aim is to break down barriers and allow people to find their voices.

Singers described the choir as their family, a place of belonging and a network.

They will join with 400 singers in a combined concert.

Humble sister still missed What’s In a Name delves into the fascinating stories and personalities behind some of the city’s best-known street names. This week the Journal looks at central Dandenong’s Halpin Way, named in honour of Sister Ann Halpin.

WHAT’S IN A

A reminder of Ann Halpin’s legacy takes pride of place in central Dandenong.

Greater Dandenong Council unveiled an interpretive sign bearing the story of how the new Halpin Way got its name in September 2013.

Ms Halpin was a City of Greater Dandenong Living Treasure and passed away in 2009 following a seven-month battle with a brain tumour.

She was born in 1939 in St Kilda, the eldest and only girl of six children born to William and Nance Halpin.

At age 20, Ms Halpin was working in a bank.

At 21, her strong need to help others through

NAME education drew her to join the Presentation Sisters.

Her training as a teacher took her to Our Lady of Lourdes, Armadale, and her first position as principal was at St Joseph’s in Boronia.

She arrived in Dandenong as the St Mary’s Primary School principal in 1974 and became part of the strong commitment to Dandenong the Presentation Sisters had held since the first sisters arrived there to teach in 1912.

After further study she took on parish pastoral work and encountered isolated refugees and migrants, particularly women.

She approached her colleagues with a vision to help through breaking down language and cultural barriers.

The Presentation Sisters vacated their Langhorne Street home and opened the doors to Wellsprings for Women in 1995.

At first, 10 women attended for two hours on a Friday morning. The centre now helps hundreds of women and is open weekdays for English lessons, craft courses, computer training and more.

Presentation Sister Bernadette Keating said Sr Halpin was creative and a born organiser with a deep concern for people.

“Ann’s spirit is with us to this day and this signage will remind us that it’s still there in the future,” she said.

Just a walk in the park

UN's refugee role has failed

Hemmings Park or Greaves Reserve.

Researchers from the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition (IPAN) at Deakin University will chat to them for 15 minutes about what they like about the spaces and what they’d like to change.

Lead researcher Dr Jenny Veitch said this was the first phase of a three-year study involving nine parks across Melbourne. The aim is to influence park design across Australia.

She said park use was particularly low among adolescents and older adults.

“We want to hear from a real cross-section of people,” she said.

“People don’t have to be regular visitors to parks.

“We want to know what’s stopping them from using them.”

Dr Veitch said parks provided opportunities for children to play freely and for people of all ages to be physically active and connect socially.

“It is predicted that more people will be living and working in higher density neighbourhoods in the very near future, meaning that more people will need parks to have access to open spaces,” she said.

“This will create additional demand on our existing parks, so it is essential that we understand how to design and create parks that meet the needs of our growing population.”

ProjectPARK interviews will take place at a time convenient to the participant between now and mid-December.

We see again the question of what to do with the ‘so called’ refugees in PNG. I notice that all the references point to it being Australia’s fault - this is rubbish.

The body responsible for these refugees or any around the world is the UN. In 1946 they put out two agendas and the second one was, and I quote, “Another aim was to promote social progress and better standards of life.

“In short, the charter had as its ultimate goal the maintenance of peace and security throughout the world.”

It is an aim that it has totally failed on.

Since 1946 and that utopian aim, the conflicts around the world would almost equal the wars of the ancient world and the UN has done nothing to solve the problems where these conflicts begin but instead blames others for not fixing the problem which is theirs and theirs alone.

Of course ‘responsibility’ for one’s actions is now a dirty word, it is always somebody else’s fault.

The UN and it ‘human rights’ body criticises Australia for making a stand against individuals who in many cased were responsible for the overthrow of stable governments.

Interesting how this body stood by and allowed the butchery of thousands in Africa or the introduction of cholera into Hatti through their ‘peace keepers’ and claimed immunity against any claim for damages.

This is the organization that gets on its high horse and emotional bandwagon to demand we look after these so-called refugee while it sat on the sideline and did nothing in Africa and other countries.

There is only one name for this mob and it is hypocrite.

What is something people don’t know about you?

That I’m a very shy person. LOL - no really I’m an open book.

THREE … community spaces to go to grow.

What drew you to Scouts?

My family I have always been involved in Scouting. My mum is the group leader and all my sisters and brother are leaders at Springvale and we are a strong group lots of Morgans in every section - adventure and fun and lifetime friends from everywhere.

The Noble Park Community Garden always welcomes new members.

What would your last meal be?

Steak, eggs and chips.

What was your most memorable Scouting moment?

Receiving my Queen’s Scout award in 1995.

The Noble Park Community Centre’s community garden is always looking for volunteers to maintain and develop the beds.

My mum Jenny, dad Kenneth, my only brother - he’s my fave, Lorelle Smart, Becky Nelson and Steve Gonsalvez.

What has been your most embarrassing moment?

Making a fool of myself at Venturers but all in all having a great time with the youth so who cares if I look crazy?

Why should people get involved with Scouts?

Scouting is my life. I’ve never looked back and have been in the movement for over 32 years as a wee Cub myself. The best thing about Scouting is making so many amazing friends from everywhere and as a leader watching my Venturers turn into beautiful young adults and striving to be the best they can. Working with the 14 to 18-year-olds we see an amazing change in the youth. It’s just beautiful and I

tear up as they leave to go to Rovers as adults.

What misconception about Scouts would you like to set the record straight on?

Hehe, easy that one - it’s more than two hours a week. LOL. I wouldn’t change it for the world, though. I just love my Venturers and I encourage all kids to give it a try. Come down to Willara Venturers in Springvale and give it a go you won’t be disappointed.

REGIONS OVERTAKE METRO PRICES WHILE regional Victoria is known for its affordability, new REIV data shows a number of towns boast median house prices in line with their city counterparts.

In the year to 30 September, Barwon Heads on the Bellarine Peninsula retained its title as the state’s most expensive town with a median house price of $850,000 - higher than the metropolitan Melbourne median house price of $817,000.

Homes in the Ballarat suburb of Lake Wendouree also attract one of the state’s highest median house prices, at $765,000.

This is significantly higher than those in Melbourne’s outer ring, where the median house price is currently $644,000.

Nearby Newtown is also highly sought after by buyers, attracting a median house price of $709,500.

Hidden skills pop up

By Casey Neill Wallara’s Dandenong Plaza shop has a new look, new products and new festive-season hours.

“The change in decor is in response to us listening to what our clients want,” spokeswoman Karen Scholey said.

“The clients who work in the shop are younger groups and they wanted the shop to reflect that.

“They wanted to work in a shop where they would want to do their own shopping - somewhere more hip, with a great vibe not just for customers but for them too.”

The pop-up store opened its doors in June 2014 to showcase what people with disabilities could do.

“We’re extremely grateful to RetPro, the owners of the Plaza, who have generously provided this space free of charge,” Ms Scholey said.

“All proceeds from the shop assist with the development of training and education programs for people with different abilities.”

The shop stocks products that its service users make; promotes the Dandenong-based organisation’s support services, events and activities; and provides a space for employment training.

“We also had more groups around the service telling us about the fantastic items they were making and they wanted the opportunity to see their things on the shelves of the shop,” Ms Scholey said.

“So we’ve increased the range of items handmade by our clients: soy candles, jewellery, bath bombs and salts, dog biscuits and beautiful cards.

Camping for refugees

By Casey Neill Noble Park teens spent three days in the bush to build their connections to education, culture and country.

The newly arrived and refugee Noble Park Secondary College students were the first to take part in the Doxa Youth Foundation’s inaugural Strong New Futures program.

Their stint in Kooyoora State Park in Central Victoria last month was part one, and gave them the chance to build teamwork and communication skills and improve their conversational English outside the classroom.

Part two is an in-school workshop that explores the skills and practical knowledge for further study and employment.

Student Shikuffa said she learnt that she was “stronger than I think I am”.

Tina said the camp program was challenging but enjoyable.

“Every moment here is a memory for me,” she said.

TJ said the journey was worthwhile “because it shows you how lucky you are today, and it teaches you life skills”.

Lang said: “It was a good thing coming to this camp because I found my limits were higher than I thought.”

A Doxa spokeswoman said young, newly arrived and refugee students faced considerable hardship and disruption to their education and were often several years behind peers.

They also face higher rates of unemployment, with only 33 per cent finding work versus 71 per cent of Australian youth.

Doxa is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to address the disadvantage through Strong New Futures.

It’s been around since 1972, and supports more than 7000 young Victorians each year.

The students explore the natural environment.

Noble Park students enjoy the great outdoors.

Captain enjoys sunny run

By Nick Creely Steven Mullaney simply relishes the chance to play cricket in Australia whenever he gets the chance.

And while the newly appointed Nottinghamshire captain back home in England jets off on Monday to prepare for his first season as a county captain at Trent Bridge, the allrounder’s latest stint with Dandenong has been a resounding success, as the Panthers continue to roar on and off the field.

“It’s always nice to play a bit of white ball cricket for a couple of weeks - it’s nice getting some sunshine here instead of four degree weather back home,” he said.

“I know Speaky (Dandenong coach Nick Speak), the Pattinson’s (Darren and James) and Paul Boraston quite well so it was great to come over and help out any way I could.

“They asked me to come over and help for a couple of weeks, and obviously try and get as much runs and wickets as possible - but it’s been great to come out and help the lads, and hopefully get the team into the one day finals.

“But I’ve got a young family and it’s tough leaving them, so I’ll get back and enjoy Christmas and get stuck back into the gym.”

The 31-year-old’s first stint with Dandenong was back in the 2012/13 season, where the Englishman scored 558 runs and took 27 wickets, before smaller stints with CaseySouth Melbourne and DDCA powerhouse Buckley Ridges in recent years making him one of the most prized signatures in the south-east.

Tight match until Rangers drop the ball

By Nick Creely In a riveting and hot contest, the Dandenong Rangers dropped away late to fall by 12-points to an impressive Perth Lynx at Dandenong Stadium last Thursday night.

Although the Lynx blew the game wide open in a scintillating 9-18 final term, the game was tight throughout, with both defences rock solid.

Still feeling the effects of star playmaker Sara Blicavs’ season ending injury, the Rangers are still searching for ways to cover her imposing presence.

The Lynx had the early running in the game to take a three-point lead into quarter time, but a more defensive approach ensured the Rangers could claw the deficit back to just onepoint at half time.

With skipper Steph Blicavs battling hard to keep her side in the contest, the Lynx gained some ascendency and locked down defensively, and started to convert their baskets, claiming the critical victory on the glass (43-33).

Mullaney is also a big fan of the list that has been compiled down at Shepley Oval, and in particular for the much loved and respected skipper at the Panthers, who continually draws praise after recently crossing 200 first XI games at Victorian Premier Cricket level.

“Tom Donnell and Brett Forsyth are going well as they always do, (James) Nanopoulos is doing well and young Pete Cassidy is going well - I said last time I was here as well, that he’s (Donnell) one of the best players I’ve ever seen not to play first class cricket,” he said.

But Mullaney - who has scored over 6000 runs and taken 84 first class wickets - will now embark on the challenge of captaining the famous Notts, after building a rock solid reputation after first making a name for himself in his 2006 first class debut with Lancashire, where he made a special century from number eight.

He will join notable names such as Stephen Fleming, Tim Robinson, Jason Gallian and Chris Read to captain the club.

“It’s my ninth season here now (at Nottinghamshire) so I count it as my home county I’m very proud and honoured to be asked to do it and have the coach and the club have faith in me,” he said.

“I’ve captained a bit when Chris Read was injured and I really enjoyed it - I feel like I can make a real difference so that’s the main reason (for accepting the job) - we’ve got some big changes, some experience has gone but some great players have come in.

“It’s a job I can’t wait to get stuck in to, and I simply can’t wait to work closely with everyone.”

The Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA) Under 21 side began its Neil Wright Shield with a resounding win over North Metro CA. The DDCA has a long and proud recent history in the competition after winning three consecutive tournaments from 2013/14 to 2015/16.

Skipper Caleb Millman from North Dandenong won the toss and elected to bat at Rowley Allen Reserve on Sunday 19 November, looking to put the pressure straight on the opposition.

Eastern bowlers had a tough time dismissing DDCA opening batsmen Liam Hamilton (54) and Jack Jessiman (42), who ploughed 91 runs for the first wicket.

Hamilton and Jessiman spanked 12 fours between them, and managed to set the innings up perfectly.

Despite Millman chiming in with a classy 32 in the middle order, the DDCA were restricted to 9/188 off their 40 overs after Eastern bowlers James Sparrow (3/30) and Kuldeep Patel (2/38) led an admirable fightback.

Jakob Woinarski (1/19) picked up an early Eastern wicket and the visitors simply couldn’t recover, finishing on 6/133 off their 40 overs, with opener Aftab Merchant (67) playing a terrific knock with little support.

There was plenty to like from the DDCA bowlers, with Springvale South bowler Callum Sigaras (2/21) brilliant, Brayden Sharp (0/14 off eight overs) kept things tight, while Millman took a vital wicket.

Dandenong West spinner Riley Siwes (0/34) also showed glimpses of his immense talent with the ball, with the son of Bulls legend Greg, expected to transition into Premier Cricket next season.

By Nick Creely Through all the sacrifice and hard work that youngsters have put in all over the country, it all came down to Friday night’s AFL draft, where local TAC club Dandenong Stingrays had one if it’s finest in recent memory.

In total the Stingrays had three players taken in the first round, and two players taken in the second, with just one player selected by an interstate club.

After initially being touted as the Stingrays’ sixth number one draft selection, game breaking midfielder Luke Davies-Uniacke was selected with pick number four to the North Melbourne Football Club after surprisingly slipping down the order in what could be the biggest steal of the draft.

As a big bodied midfielder, Davies-Uniacke will add instant class, grunt and leadership to a young Kangaroo midfield, and showcased his immense talent by dragging the Rays back from 50-points down in an elimination final this season.

“I’m over the moon - it’s so surreal, you kind of pinch yourself to see if it’s true and it’s so surreal,” he told SEN radio moments after being drafted.

“I am pretty level about everything - there was a bit of talk (in the media), but I’ve stayed underneath my shoulders and taken everything in my stride.”

St Kilda was the next to pick up a Stingray, selecting midfielder Hunter Clark with pick seven, with the Saints maintaining their commitment to drafting local talent.

The Peninsula boy will add toughness, versatility and an ability to play off a half back or as an inside midfielder after a stellar best-andfairest season with the Stingrays.

Clark’s selection to the Saints means they now have 10 former Dandenong Stingrays on their current list.

“It’s hard to explain (the feeling of being drafted) - it’s been a dream forever so to be selected by such a great club is surreal, really,” Clark told Saints Media post-draft.

“Coming into the year I played a lot of halfback and wing, so I want to challenge myself and prove that I can be an outside player as well (at AFL level).”

It only took another four picks for another Stingray name to be read out, with powerful utility Aiden Bonar selected with pick 11 to the GWS Giants.

After initially touted as a number one draft pick, Bonar endured a cruel luck with injury with two consecutives knee reconstructions, but bounced back superbly to storm into first round draft selections by playing a pivotal role in a Haileybury College premiership and during the Stingrays’ finals campaign.

But Bonar will add an element of x-factor to the Giants, where he will initially start as a

Tom De Koning was the next to realise his dream, with Carlton selecting the ruck/forward with selection 30 of the draft.

The 200cm big man is a terrific set shot at goal, can play as a ball winning ruckman, and was vital for the Dandenong Stingrays in stages of the TAC Cup before a lacerated kidney ended his season prematurely.

At AFL level, De Koning is likely to evolve into a ruckman who can pinch hit up forward, and will take time to develop under Brendan Bolton’s tutelage at the Blues.

As co-captain of the Rays, and of premiership side Haileybury, Clavarino will be earmarked as a future leader of the Saints, and one that could step straight into AFL level and have an impact.

Western Jets forward Cameron Rayner was selected with the number one draft by the Brisbane Lions.

The Pre-Season and Rookie drafts will now be held today (Monday).

The Dandenong Stingrays’ latest batch of top-10 draft picks are destined to enjoy long and fruitful careers at AFL level.

For Stingrays midfielder Luke DaviesUniacke - who will don the blue and white after being drafted by North Melbourne with selection number four in Friday’s draft - he hopes to emulate some of the AFL’s biggest stars and forge a successful career.

“I want to have a long career, that’d be unreal - I do see my game around (Patrick) Dangerfield’s, just the way he goes forward too, and also Dusty (Dustin Martin), so hopefully I can have great careers like they do,” he explained “I feel ready to get to pre-season during pre-season, they’ll tone me up and get me prepared. I do have some confidence that I can have an impact, maybe not straight away, but throughout the season for sure.”

And throughout what has been a challenging year, with school, Vic Country, AFL Academy and TAC Cup football, Davies-Uniacke has leant on friends, family and his manager, Robbie D’Orazio.

“My family have been amazing, alongside Robbie, I can’t thank him enough, and that’s the same with my parents and friends - all their advice has been to just be myself,” he said.

His teammate, and close Stingray mate Hunter Clark, will be just 20 minutes from his Peninsula home as he starts a career with St Kilda.

He is proud to see some of his closest teammates at the ‘Rays selected in the draft, with Aiden Bonar also picked up in the first round by GWS. “I’ve grown up playing footy with and against Luke Davies and Aiden Bonar, so for all three of us to be picked up is pretty special - we have a pretty strong relationship there,” Clark told Saints Media after the draft.

Clark said that despite a slow start to the year due to injury, he was able to slowly prove to recruiters his capability as a half-back who transitioned into a dominant inside midfielder.

“I had a bit of a slow start to the season - I missed most of the pre-season with a groin injury - and just had to build fitness and game time,” he said.

“I finished the season pretty well and showcased what I’m able to do.”

And he will add a layer of class and versatility to the Saints’ midfield, with Clark’s kicking skills a major strength.

“I’ve learnt to kick on my right and left for a number of years now, it’s one of my main assets so I’m comfortable and confident with both,” he said.

Aston Dee Bee brains them in the cup Aston Dee Bee secured his place in greyhound racing folklore after a brilliant victory in the $600,000 Group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park on Friday night.

The hulking 36-kilo speedster took full advantage of his inside draw, railing powerfully through the first turn to take a lead he would not relinquish, charging to the line more than three lengths clear of the fast finishing Chasin’ Crackers in 29.36 to claim the world’s richest greyhound race.

The win was an emotional one for trainer Seona Thompson, who struggled to hold back her tears after the race.

“I can’t believe it, I’m just really proud, proud of the dog, proud of the whole family who worked so hard just to get him to the track,” she said.

“I’m so happy for Ray (owner Ray Borda), he was in dogs before I was born and this is his first Cup. My dad and step mother are here tonight, as I said it’s a big family effort, everydandenong.starcommunity.com.au

Having won 10 of his previous 14 starts, with those four placings being at group level, Aston Dee Bee’s win came as no surprise to many punters. He was sent to the boxes the $2.40 favourite after qualifying fastest with a brilliant heat win in 29.12, and was unbeaten in four starts from box one at Sandown Park.

“I don’t think you can be too confident in a Melbourne Cup, but what he did is what I hoped he would do,” Thompson said.

“I knew he could begin and that he could hold his spot. He’s racing so well, he’s a big strong dog he’s jumping out of his skin. When

I get home tonight and watch the replay I’m sure it will start to sink in.”

His breakthrough victory at group level - he had been placed in six of his previous eight attempts in group company - improved his record to 27 wins from 48 career starts and elevated his career prizemoney to $631,025.

In the night’s support feature, Fanta Bale became the third greyhound in history to reach the $1m prizemoney mark with a brilliant win in the group 1 Bold Trease.

The darling of Australian greyhound racing began cleanly but was put under pressure for the first lap by Petunia Monelli and Champagne Sally. However, she soon stamped her authority on the race passing the starting boxes for the final time, powering away to claim her seventh group-1 title and take her career prize money to $1,094,170.

Clubs' off-season build-up

By Nick Creely Local football clubs are busily preparing for the 2018 season and scrambling to improve their list in any way possible during the offseason.

In the Southern Football League, Division 2 side DOVETON EAGLES have poached Doveton star Nick Battle.

The brother of St Kilda forward Josh, Nick has been a star of the SEFNL for many years as a skilful, quick winger.

The Eagles have also landed premiership champion Ryan Hendy from the Doves, as they look to follow on from their Division 3 premiership success.

KEYSBOROUGH has also been a major winner this off-season, with James Anwyl and Aaron Mcllroy (Mt Eliza) crossing over to the Burras.

Ex-EFL goal-kicking machine Matthew Carnelley will also lead a new look forward line, while the Burra have also managed to re-sign the majority of its senior list, with superstar Chris Bryan recommitting to the club for another season.

It will now build one of the most formidable forward lines in Southern footy, with Carnelley and Bryan to form a lethal combination up forward.

In Division 3, SPRINGVALE DISTRICTS has landed a big fish in two-time Noble Park premiership player George Angelopoulos signing on for the club.

The skilful midfielder has been an Eastern star for many years, and only recently enjoyed stints at Stony Creek, Narre Warren and Karingal.

Chris Chalmers has also returned to the Demons, while Chris Pistos also crosses over from Noble Park as they look to improve on a disappointing 2017.

Nick Battle has crossed to the Doveton Eagles. 171613 have signed up Matthew Collett and Luke Damato, as they look to continue their development into 2018. Collett and Damato both come from Keysborough, and will add some further depth in the midfield next season.

LYNDALE have also been highly active in the off-season, with Furkan Erkal, Mick Hemmett, Nick Cunningham all joining the club, while star spearhead Trevor Kumetaitis will go around again for the Cougars after a brilliant

2017 season.

In the Eastern Football League, NOBLE PARK has had an eventful off-season to date, with many key departures putting a dent in their Division 1 finals hopes for 2018.

Bulls’ stars James Gwilt, Ziggie Alwan and Trent Robertson have all signed with rival club Rowville, in a bitter blow to the club.

Chris Pitsos, skipper Sam Monaghan, Tim Kelly, Matthew Homfray and Shayne Allan

have all departed to rival clubs.

The Bulls have, however, brought in Kieran Byers, Jacob Duscher, Jake Gains, Brenton Hillard, Jarrod Smith and Jack Wheeler as they look to build a new look list.

But in better news for the Bulls, current AFL star and former junior Adam Treloar will form part of the junior coaching panel, as he looks to help develop the next batch of senior stars at the club.

Redbacks transfer to join southern league

By Nick Creely The Southern Football Netball League (SFNL) has officially welcomed Hampton Park Football Netball Club into the competition as of 2018.

The Redbacks will join the SFNL after the state governing body approved a transfer from South East Football Netball League (SEFNL).

“It was a very thorough process. We asked a lot of questions of the clubs and had to come back to them several times,” SFNL General Manager - Operations David Jennings said.

“To their credit, (the) submissions were outstanding and we’re confident with where we have landed.

“The obligation of the Board is to weigh up the needs and wants of all existing member clubs to ensure any new club joining is in the best interest of the League. "(Hampton Park) have demonstrated their commitment to the SFNL and we are confi-

The Redbacks have severely struggled for

on-field success in recent years, with two winless seasons in 2016 and 2017 sealing their fate.

In a statement, Hampton Park FNC copresidents Tim Ziegeler and Mick O’Brien expressed their thrill to be joining the Southern league, and are looking to bounce back after a lack of on-field success in the SEFNL. “We are really pleased with the outcome and thank the SFNL board and football operations department for their assistance with our move to the SFNL,” they said.

“We are looking forward to becoming a productive member of the SFNL and seeing the club become competitive again.”

The SFNL has also announced a revamped competition structure for 2018, with the continual growth of the competition seeing the expansion of three divisions to four.

The move follows the acceptance of Hampton Park and Frankston Dolphins in to the competition for 2018, as well as Cerebrus entering a team for the first time in several years.

There will be no local teams in Division 1, Keysborough and Doveton Eagles will compete in Division 2, Springvale Districts, Hallam, Endeavour Hills and Hampton Park will compete in Division 3, while Lyndale, Lyndhurst, Sandown and Dandenong make up part of the newly formed Division 4.

Jennings said the restructure was necessary to accommodate the growth of the League, as well as make the SFNL a more competitive, evenly matched competition.

“Moving to four divisions in 2018 is a significant shake up of the competition,” he said.

As a League, we had to be diligent in weighing up the short and long-term benefits for both a club and as a collective.

“Our aim is to make the competition more even and to promote the opportunity for more clubs to play finals.

“By going to four divisions it will establish the best possible environment for clubs to be sustainable and competitive.”

MAJOR SERVICE & TUNE-UP The Toyota / Subaru 2.0-litre flat-four engine was revised in late 2016, lifting it from 200 horsepower to 207 bhp (152 kW if you like metric engine numbers).

At the same time as the 2016 upgrade the differential ratio was reduced to get grunt to the road by way of having the engine at higher revs for the same road speed. More about this in the Driving section.

Drop the Toyota down a gear or two, give it a bootfull and enjoy the ride. Because there's no turbocharger and the engine responds virtually instantly. Love it.

The engine has a nice sporty note that’s most pleasing to the ear, noticeably better than the sound from the earlier models.

You do need a lot of revs to get the best from it - which is exactly how it should be. Gear

changes are slick and easy and the short throw lever is in just the right place.

Handling is exceptionally good and the LE’s new Sachs system is even more responsive than that in the others in the 86 range. Think what you want the car to do and it seems to get the message from your brain rather than simply through your hands and feet.

Clever design means ride comfort doesn't really seem any different from the standard Toyota 86. We weren’t able to do a back-toback with other variants, but will see if we can manage that some day.

At $41,490 the Limited Edition 86 costs significantly more than the $36,490 GTS on which it's based, but in the world of high-performance that's the penalty you have to pay.

Would I buy an 86 LE? Most certainly, the appearance and excellent on-road performance make it something special. Then again, if I was tight on money the $5000 offers a big saving.

In a world that's moving at breakneck speed a five-year-old car like the Toyota 86 needs a serious freshen-up to keep it in the minds of potential buyers.
