The face behind the prize

BY LUKE VOOGT Students from Newtown schools have won four out of five age groups in a Geelong-wide art competition dedicated to one of the city’s most famous historical figures.

More than 1500 students from 32 schools entered the Who’s who portrait prize honouring Jules Francois Archibald, who was born in Geelong West.

Bambini Early Learning Centre’s Molly MitchellTavener, Geelong College’s Wyatt Eddy and Clonard College’s Marcelle Pulleine and Alicia Mitchell were among the competition’s top five.

One of the winners, Grade 5 student Wyatt, created his very own tribute to Archibald.

Geelong Gallery director Jason Smith announced the winners on 20 October.

He and the gallery’s Lisa Sullivan and Gail Frost judged the young artists on their individual expression, techniques and ability to capture their subject’s “identity”.

“We were delighted with the number of entries received in this year’s Who’s who portrait prize,” he said.

“Judging the prize is always a challenging exercise, however we all agreed the winning entrants reflected their subject, and understanding and

enthusiasm for portraiture in their work.”

The competition is part of the Archibald Prize, which is on display in Geelong until 10 December.

Born January 14, 1856 probably inside his father’s police station on the northwest

corner of Church and Weddell streets - Archibald is one of Geelong’s most famous sons.

He didn’t last long in Geelong though. After a year his Irish father, Joseph, took off for Warrnambool, then Ballarat and Port Fairy.

Archibald founded the

Bulletin magazine and was a passionate supporter of Australian nationalism, journalism and arts.

He bequeathed a large sum of money which led to the establishment of the Archibald Prize, Australia’s most prestigious portrait competition.

A plaque dedicated to Archibald sits on the corner of Weddell and Church Streets.

The Who’s who portrait prize is on display throughout Geelong over the next six weeks, at venues including the Geelong West Library.

Ending the ‘fear factor’ at tax time When the Voice on Pako phoned Tom Lai, it was a hot spring day with the mercury pushing past 30 degrees.

Late in the afternoon, most people would have had their sights set on the beach or any other outdoor pleasure.

“No beach for me today,” he says.

“This is my passion - dealing with people and maximising their tax deduction.”

Tom, who is married with a three-year-old son, is passionate about helping people to rid the burden of tax time.

“A lot of people have the fear factor,” he says.

“I’m just very happy to see them smile at the end of it all.

“I love seeing people smiling instead of worrying.”

According to KeepCups’ website users have diverted billions of disposable cups from landfill.

The couple, who have been married for 16 years, found a gap in the local market for environmentally-friendly products at their home town.

“There are a lot of products in Melbourne but not a lot in the regions,” Barbara says.

“We could see that people wanted to make changes and there was nowhere to purchase everything under one roof.”

The former farmer and public servant now sell everything sustainable from toothpaste to shopping bags.

The growing market for

sustainable goods in Geelong - especially on Pako and in Torquay - fascinates Barbara.

“There are some fantastic stores there and I really think we’ll complement what they do,” she says.

But Earth to Life has already established itself as the street’s bamboo fibre expert.

“It’s quite unique to us,“ Barbara says.

Barbara researches new products and works with local artisans, a strategy she says worked at their first store.

“We were just blown away when we set up the Albury shop nearly six years ago.

Earth to Life is Geelong’s latest one-stop sustainable shop in the city’s vibrant, cosmopolitan Pakington Street.

Barbara and Neville Hull opened their newest store on 2 October following the success of their first shop in Albury.

“We’re committed to the Geelong area now,” Barbara says.

“We’ve done a lot a research and know it’s going to fit beautifully with what we sell and what we do.”

The couple have spent plenty of time in Geelong West the past few weeks getting the store running smoothly.

“We’ve had a lot of people come in and wish us well,” Barbara says.

“They’re enjoying exploring the shop and we’ve already got some regulars.”

The store’s organic bamboo and hemp clothing for men and ladies are favourites among these new loyal customers, Barbara says.

“It’s anti-bacterial, it breathes and it doesn’t permeate smells so it’s really good for summer.”

For the eco-minded coffee connoisseurs the store sells KeepCups, which are BPA approved.

“Which means they don’t have any nasty chemicals,” Barbara says. “They keep your coffee warm for much longer.”

Their Star Wars range featuring Chewbacca, R2D2, Rey and Darth Vader have sold partulcarly well as Episode 8 approaches.

Things that make you go Boom When Lara’s Dajana Dizdarevic heard about new creative retail hub Boom Makers, she knew she had to get involved.

Seven artists occupy six studios at the hub, the brainchild of Ren Ineiand and Kate Jacobi, who own Boom Gallery across the road.

“I acquired a pop-up shop on the other end of Pakington Street last year,” the 28-year-old says.

“That was quite successful and I was happy with how that was going.”

But then she heard about Boom Makers, where artists rent studio spaces to create and sell their work.

“I thought I’d better get in quick,” Dajana says.

“Each of us had a blank canvas and we just made whatever we wanted in our studios. Each studio is a representation of the artist who works in that space.”

Dajana creates unique cement planters and collects, grows and propagates unusual succulents.

She began both pursuits about four years ago.

“I work with rare species,” she says.

She describes her studio as 80 per cent retail and

20 per cent workshop, but adds that each artist has their own unique mix.

“I make all my mess outside and I do the simple things like sanding inside,” she says.

The hub is the perfect place for creative souls to start plying their trade, Dajana says.

“I think it’s amazing.

It takes away a lot of fear when you’re going out as an independent artist or small business.”

The artists bounce ideas and advice off each other, she says.

“You’ve got constant support and a network of likeminded people. It’s like a small family - it’s great to have.”

Leather and book artist Beverley Exell has been particularly helpful she says.

“She’s super supportive and knowledgeable.”

Jeweller Sally Cook, son Luke and daughter Mia work out of the hub.

“They’re stocked all over the world now - they very successful,” Dajana says.

Locals can find surf textiles, frame maker, skincare products, macrame hangers and other unique art at Boom Makers, at 14 Rutland Street, Newtown.

Q&A on pako

Newton's Maxine Therese has just written her first book.

Good children, on the whole Newtown’s latest first-time author Maxine Therese has just published her new book The Push For A Child Philosophy. The Voice on Pako had a chat with Maxine to find out what it’s all about.

How does it feel to have published your first book?

It’s actually a little surreal. I’m sitting here with the copy in my hand and really, it’s like a dream come true. It’s been quite a 15-year journey.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a Geelong girl - I grew up in Ocean Grove. My eldest son’s 24 and my youngest is 22. I currently live in Newtown but I’ve lived in the Geelong area my whole life. I love to walk on the beach, meditate and travel. My work is passion. I’m 49 and I’ll be 50 in January.

What inspired you to write the book and what work went into it?

The research was inspired by being a mother and working with children in schools and children with medical problems. I didn’t think any of the developmental models were supportive of the children’s whole growth. They’re all

It’s introducing a new philosophy of the child that sees them as a whole. It presents what I call the Foundational Needs Model. The model is based on the idea that there are seven foundational needs that all children have. If those needs are met it leads to wellness. If those needs are not met it leads to what we see as common childhood issues and behavioural problems.

In a nutshell, it’s a complete philosophy of childhood. It’s a system that parents, educators and practitioners can all use.

Who would you like to have dinner with, alive or dead?

It’s not someone most people would know - Sri Aurbindo. He’s been dead for a while. He’s been an inspiration and I like his worldview. He wrote a book called the Last Divine and it’s been pivotal to my self-understanding. It’s basically about the idea that we’re all whole but we’re aiming towards our human potentials on earth - our divinity on earth.

You completed a Doctorate in Philosophy from Deakin University in 2013. Can you describe the work you undertook?

My PhD thesis was on the Foundational Needs Model. I researched a lot of science and eastern and western philosophies to look at the whole child. It was very much bringing lots of disciplines together. The Indian chakra system helped me understand the human potentials that we all possess from the beginning of our lives.

What are the most important steps

How long have you worked at Newtown Body and Mind and what is it like to work there?

I’ve only been in this building for six months and it’s fantastic. There are eight like-minded practitioners that work out of the rooms here and we enjoy the space. It’s a fun place to work.
