By Luke Voogt A Melbourne-born software company will create 500 local jobs following the announcement of its new Asia-Pacific headquarters in Geelong.

LiveTiles’ planned headquarters would “put Geelong on the map”, the company’s chief executive officer Karl Redenbach said during the announcement at Deakin University yesterday.

“What we’re hoping to achieve here ... is to set Geelong as a technology hub and leader, not just for Australia, but for the world.”

LiveTiles had already begun recruiting for the headquarters, Mr Redenbach said.

“We’re already in recruitment mode, which is great and we expect it to kick off early in the new year,” he said.

Ships cruising in for stay

By Luke Voogt Geelong will host its first overnight cruise ship visit in 20 years next month, according to the city’s tourism boss.

The Regatta will be one of five cruise ships to visit Corio Bay between now and 18 June when it drops anchor on 16 December before leaving the next day.

“It’s a good increase in numbers and we’re delighted that one of those ships will be staying overnight,” said Geelong and Bellarine Tourism executive director Roger Grant.

The Regatta was the only ship to stay overnight in at least 20 years that Mr Grant was aware of.

But the lack of a pier for “medium-sized” cruise ships to moor at was denying Geelong im-

portant revenue, Mr Grant said.

“We can do better,” he said.

Mr Grant said his organisation had looked at Cunningham Pier or the previously proposed Yarra Street Pier as options for mooring.

The suggestion that Cunningham Pier was unstable was a myth, and with engineering upgrades it could host cruise ships, he said.

“There have been a lot of resources spent on the Cunningham Pier,” he said.

“The Yarra Street Pier starting from scratch is a massive project.”

Former Geelong mayor Darryn Lyons lambasted the State Government for failing to date to fund a cruise ship pier.

The government recently announced a further $3.5 million for the $13.5m project for the Royal Geelong Yacht Club.

“It’s such a waste of public money,” he said.

“We need ships staying overnight - not just for the day. (They are) floating money pit(s).”

Mr Lyons said the government had squandered millions for Geelong in its failure to work with the yacht club to build a pier.

“I’m a huge fan for funding for yacht club,” he said.

“But the government are complete and utter morons when it comes to town planning.”

Mr Lyons said his proposed Yarra Street Pier was a much better option than Cunningham Pier.

“Cunningham Pier would fall over if a cruise ship butted against it.”

Mr Lyons took a privately funded trip to New Zealand as mayor, where saw how the cruise ship industry had transformed the local economy, he said.

In Brief Rail doubt The state opposition has ridiculed an Andrews Government rail promise which is crucial to the delivery of proposed faster trains between Geelong and Melbourne.

The opposition said the previous Labor State Government first promised the airport “rapid transit link” in 1999, which Premier Daniel Andrews this week linked with “untangling” regional lines to allow faster trains for Geelong.

Body found The Coroner’s Court is forensically investigating a body found floating off Portarlinton.

Police said officers first heard reports of “human remains” at Bennets Head just after 6am on Tuesday before launching investigation and recovery missions.

Earthquake strikes An earthquake has shaken towns and rural areas near Geelong, according to emergency services.

Geoscience Australia recorded the 3.0-magnitude quake 25km to 30km west of Geelong, affecting an area including Inverleigh, Winchelsea, Bannockburn and Teesdale.

Yachties funded The Andrews Government has committed $7.5 million for upgraded facilities at Geelong’s waterfront Royal Geelong Yacht Club.

The government this week announced an additional $3.5 million for a sailing school component of yacht club improvements, with Education Minister James Merlino saying the funding would benefit “students and adults” from across the state.

Fire fight A grassfire has prompted emergency services to alert residents living in areas north of Geelong.

Firefighters battled the Bacchus Marsh Rd blaze as the Indy went to press on Thursday afternoon, with the CFA warning residents of Lara, Anakie and Little River to monitor weather conditions as the fire travelled west.

A thrilling finish for last-second turkey winner Lexie Belmont’s Lexie Butcher just beat the clock to become a Talkin’ Turkey winner, entering with a mere 20 seconds left.

Youth focus Young Surf Coast residents want their council to focus on sports facilities, job creation and “improved transport”, according to a survey with 700 respondents. A poisoning project will seek to kill foxes preying on rare native animals between Anglesea and Cape Otway, Parks Victoria has announced.

The red fox was a “significant threat” to endangered local animals including the longnosed potoroo, southern brown bandicoot and spot-tailed quoll, Parks Victoria said.

Yes, after so many years waiting for an oversized novelty landmark to rise above the city, this week we watched in awe as dignitaries unveiled ... drum roll, please ... The Big Oil Tank.

Wait, what? The Big Oil Tank?

Yep, that’s now the city’s oversized icon after the good folks at Viva Energy invested a bucketload of bucks on building “Australia’s largest crude oil tank”.

Apparently the big barrel can hold 100 million litres of the stuff - enough to fill almost 63,000 standard barrels of oil. Or 40 Olympic swimming pools, which would make an interesting Masters Games spectacle.

Anyway, Double Take welcomes The Big Oil Tank - long may she rein (hopefully not rain) over the refinery at Corio!

On a somewhat smaller scale but of possibly similar impact, a Geelong Facebook user has given an ideal example of how DIY advertising can go awry.

The Facebooker, who will remain nameless, for reasons that will become apparent, decided to use the platform’s questionable advertising service to flog an old mattress.

Perhaps aware that the average Facebook ad lasts in the average feed for an average 1.7 seconds, the user accompanied the offer with a picture that was way beyond average.

But catch the eye it certainly did - for all the wrong reasons.

The mattress was there, all right, but, for Double Take’s money, the two fornicating dogs on top of it just somehow ruined the sales pitch.

“$150. Queen size mattress - hardly used,” the ad said.

No wonder!

Bellarine MP Lisa Neville might have overlooked an obvious alternative when launching a solar power plant at Barwon Water’s Black Rock sewage farm this week.

The $3.4 million plant’s 2800 panels would save Barwon Water “around $185,000” a year, Lisa announced, putting “downward pressure on prices for customers”.

All well and good, perhaps, but maybe our MP could have opened her eyes, or should that be nostrils, to the readily apparent on-site alternative - methane!

After all, the stinky flammable gas is an inevitable product of the sewage recycling process, it’s available day and night, and it’s already successfully recycled to produce electricity at landfill sites.

Too bad that Lisa failed to, err, sniff out the opportunity!

In the meantime, the government will spend up big on Black Rock’s solar panels while its methane - a more-potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide - ends up ... where?

Something stinks at Black Rock - but this time it ain’t the methane!

And finally, the opening of a new vegan café in Geelong West caused Double Take to muse about menu equality this week - specifically, discrimination against omnivores.

To exlpain, readers will be aware that plenty of everyday restaurants offer vegan options.

But, to Double Take’s rather limited knowledge, no vegan venue serves a T-bone alternative.

Outrageous!

Police hunt ‘kissing’ winery creep Toast to Coast victim ‘bashed with pine cone or rock’ A man allegedly hit a woman in the head with a pine cone or rock after kissing her without permission during a Toast to the Coast event.

Police this week released an image of a man they wanted to interview over the incident at Bellarine’s Terindah Estate winery on 4 November.

Police alleged that the unknown man assaulted the victim after she told him to stop kissing her.

He first approached her after she walked away from the event area at the winery to answer a phone call, about 2.45pm, police said.

She had walked about 200 metres into a vineyard to “escape the noise” when the man allegedly struck. “(The) victim was followed by an unknown male who approached her and began asking her questions while she was on the phone,” police alleged. “(The) male then kissed her on lips

without warning or permission. The complainant pushed him away and said, 'No, stop’.

“The male has then picked up a pine cone or rock and struck the complainant on the forehead with it before running off back towards the main event area.

The male was not sighted again by the victim.”

Police described the suspect as Caucasian, in his late twenties or early thirties, with brown hair, clean shaven, a thin

build and wearing a white shirt and black slacks.

Police asked anyone with information about the alleged assault to phone Detective Senior Constable Glenn Benstead at Geelong Sexual Offenders and Child Abuse Team on 5246 8100 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The two-day Toast to the Coast is billed as the Geelong region’s “pre-eminent annual food, wine and music festival”.

More classic cars to race around region in Targa tour An iconic Italian motor rally will extend to the Geelong region as part of the event’s Australian “tribute”, organisers have announced.

Geelong’s Waterfront would host the Targa Florio Australian Tribute’s official race start on 30 November, the organisers said.

The field of classic sports cars would then

travel to the Bellarine Peninsula and on to the Great Ocean Road the following day as part of the “incredible four-day touring race”.

Some of the participating cars were “extremely rare”, the organisers said, with values into the vicinity of $3 million.

The organisers said the event would be the

first Targa Florio Australian Tribute.

The race would coincide with the 101st anniversary of its Italian namesake.

The event will help deliver a second week of major motoring events in the region, with the Geelong’s waterfront hosting an annual Geelong Revival this weekend.

A Melbourne developer plans to build central Geelong’s first hotel in two decades with a $200 million investment by 2020.

Franze Developments would partner hotels operator IHG to open the 190-room Holiday Inn and Suites at 44 Ryrie St, the companies announced this week.

The development would be “the largest hotel in the city”, the companies said.

The “mixed use” development would cover 33,000 square metres of floor space including the hotel, shops, offices and “24 modern residences”.

“The hotel itself will boast an all-day dining restaurant and bar, swimming pool, gym, parking and 300 square metres of meeting facilities including a function room for 250 people,” the companies said.

The hotel would also be IHG’s first Australian Holiday Inn to offer 40 suites for “the longer-stay segment”.

The project signalled a “renewed outlook for the vibrant Victorian coastal city”, they companies said.

Franze Developments’ Paul Franze was “very excited to partner” IHG in the Geelong project.

Franze Developments bought the 2700 square metre site for $7 million in April.

$350m sport HQ ‘to employ 1500’

By Luke Voogt A planned $350m sports facility in Modawarre could deliver 1500 jobs, according to the companies behind the project.

By Luke Voogt Schools, businesses and community groups have combined in Geelong’s west to bring Christmas cheer to the city’s most needy in a first-time carols concert.

Carols in West Park on Sunday will be the first event of its type, according to Geelong West Neighbourhood House’s Pam Virgona.

“It’s certainly the first with the partners involved,” she said.

The volunteer-run neighbourhood house joined with St John’s Lutheran School and Hodges Real Estate for the event, to collect food for OneCare Geelong.

“It’s got a lovely community feel,” Pam said.

“There are only a few blocks separating these different organisations.”

The organisations spent six weeks planning the free event in the “jewel of the crown in Geelong West”, and Pam was keen to get locals along.

“We don’t want it to be Carols by the Bay or Carols by Candlelight,” she said.

“We just want it to be grassroots - bring a rug, bring your picnic basket and most importantly bring the kids.”

OneCare’s Corrie Inei called on locals to bring non-perishable items to the event, to place under the organisation’s Christmas tree at the West Park rotunda.

The items would go towards hampers for families and locals doing it tough this Christmas, she said.

“People will be receiving hampers all throughout the city. It’s a wonderful event because it’s working with different organisations within the Geelong West community.”

The carols will feature performances by local harpist Peter Roberts, the St John’s School Choir, The Acabellas, Rebecca and Eva Hay and OneCare’s very own choir.

Carols in West Park runs from 5pm to 6.30pm on Sunday, 26 November.

Geelong’s diverse mix of professions and cultures made the city an ideal location for the company to build its workforce, Mr Redenbach said.

“I think that’s one of the great things that Geelong offers.

“You’ve got a diverse mix of people ... and I really think that’s one of the key reasons why we’ve started to establish the operation here.”

Mr Redenbach described Deakin as a world leader in artificial intelligence and said the LiveTiles would look to recruit from the university.

“The quality of graduates, the quality of people are the best in the world,” he said.

Geelong’s coastal location made it an ideal for employee wellbeing, Mr Redenbach said.

“The way that we think the future of work is going is people will want to have the beach and the sun,” he said.

“That is something we think is very unique to Geelong as a regional centre. We think the ability to come back here is something we always wanted to do.”

Mr Redenbach said the company planned to recruit mostly from Geelong.

He cited the company’s offices in the US city of Richland and Hobart of examples of where it had recruited locally.

“We’ve had success building a location in Hobart, when everyone said it couldn’t be done,” he said.

“Well, we did it and we’re doing it again in Geelong.”

LiveTiles had commenced its search for a location, Mr Redenbach said. But he declined to specify which locations the company was considering.

Mr Redenbach and Peter Nguyen-Brown established LiveTiles to help clients to create workplace software using ‘drag and drop’ technology.

The company has clients such as PepsiCo and the American Defense Department.

“We’ve been very lucky in our business,” Mr Redenbach said.

“We’re now one of the fastest growing software as a service companies ever, at our age. Last financial year we grew at 300 per cent.”

By Patrick Laverick Here comes Santa Claus - Geelong’s waterfront has turned on the festive spirit with a giant interactive 3D snow globe painted out the front of the Carousel.

Santa’s little helpers were on show to launch the painting this week, with Central Geelong Marketing’s elves showing how everyone can become part of the picture.

Artist Scott Jensen prepared the striking image as one of five for Central Geelong Christmas Trail.

More of his work will appear around the city area over the next few weeks.

The 3D artwork joins an augmented reality experience of virtual artwork throughout central Geelong.

The Christmas trail will feature 28 different activities throughout the season.

Geelong Gallery has joined the fun, inviting children to get creative with their own Christmas decoration arts and crafts in the lead-up to 25 December.

More fun for the family will arrive at the waterfront in December, with Christmas movies at Steampacket Gardens.

Santa’s reindeer training academy will run in Lt Malop St outside Central Square all month, offerign children rides on the reindeers’ backs.

Santa’s mailbox has appeared at the Carousel, too, for children to post Christmas wishlists to Santa for a personalised response from St Nick himself.

The State Government has completed architectural plans for the Geelong Convention Centre but has refused to release them, according to local MP Simon Ramsay.

“My sources have told me the government has completed the business case and the architectural plans,” the Member for Western Victoria said yesterday.

In parliament last Tuesday, Mr Ramsay called on Regional Development Minister Jaala Pulford to announce plans and funding for the centre.

Ms Pulford failed to respond in parliament, but Mr Ramsay said she “informally” told him the business case was complete.

“She did indicate that the business plan had been put to the Department of Treasury and Finance for costing in next year’s budget.

“There must be an architectural drawing, including things like the size and capacity of the centre, in that business case.”

Mr Ramsay accused the State Government of keeping Geelong “in the dark” by delaying announcements about the centre until closer to the 2018 Victorian election.

“They’ve been very secretive about the whole thing - they’ll no doubt see the convention centre as part of their election campaign,” he said.

“This is just political opportunism.”

Mr Ramsay said Geelong had the right to “look at what is being offered and whether it’s going to meet the needs of the city”.

“It’s a bit odd we haven’t been briefed on what will likely be one of the biggest infrastructure projects in Geelong.”

Geelong Mayor Bruce Harwood also said the business case had “been completed”.

“We’ve not been able to have a look at that yet but I’ll certainly be trying to get as much detail and information as I can.”

Mr Harwood said the working out the “next step” for the convention centre was a top priority for Geelong’s council, in his first interview as mayor with the Indy last week.

“That is an absolute critical piece of infrastructure that could be a game-changer for us in Geelong.”

The Indy asked Ms Pulford why the government was withholding the release of the plans but she failed to respond.

“Work is currently underway to ensure every avenue is explored to deliver a facility that is viable and sustainable and that best meets the economic interests of the region,” she said.

Geelong MP Christine Couzens echoed the minister’s comments and confirmed Deakin University’s water front carpark would be the location for the convention centre.

“It was never going to be anywhere else,” she said.

“The Liberals are in no place to be complaining given they’ve done nothing for four years (they were in government).”

Mr Ramsay said Deakin was talks with the City of Greater Geelong about alternative parking sites, a principle of the university’s support for State Government led development of the site.

Deakin University and the State Government declined to comment on whether they had come to an arrangement.

REVVED UP: The waterfront will be home to vintage fashions, bikes and cars for the Geelong Revival Motoring Festival this weekend.

Porsche lines up with classic look Porsche joins the Geelong Revival for the first time this year as the motoring festival celebrates more than 50 years of racing on the waterfront.

Porsches from 1959 to today’s 718 Boxster will roll into Geelong direct from the company’s Melbourne dealership - one of the oldest outside Germany.

Visitors can also tear up the racetrack in a Porsche 911 - sort of - through the company’s virtual reality set up.

For nearly 50 years since 1956 the Geelong Sprints brought a magnificent collection of classic sports vehicles to the waterfront.

The quarter mile sprints attracted many of the world’s best drivers including Sir Jack Brabham, Stirling Moss, Dick Johnson, Jim Richards and Alan Jones.

Towards the late '90s and early 2000s, the event was one of the largest of its type in Australia until it fell dormant in 2003.

Racing driver Nick Heath and other locals revived the event as the Geelong Revival Motoring Festival in 2012, after meeting with the former organisers.

“I had no option but to do it myself,” he told the Indy last week.

He and his team of organisors had been busy putting months of work into the event, he said.

“If I had known then (how much work it is) I probably wouldn’t have done it, so it’s lucky I didn’t.”

About 400 cars and motorcycles will sprint down Ritchie Boulevard at full throttle over the weekend in the quarter mile National Classic Sprint.

The festival’s high performance vehicles will take on the 400-metre cause on Saturday, while on Sunday the classic and vintage cars hit the track.

MODEL MOTORING: If it’s got a classic look, it’ll be on show.

Back by popular demand, Geelong’s Eastern Park will transform into a challenging course for more than 100 classic cars for round one of the 2018 Victorian Hillclimb Championships.

Competitors will race against the clock in Revival Hillclimb, which consists of six turns and 19 metres of elevation over 900 metres.

The Geelong Revival Motoring Festival had united the automotive community, bringing together the best classic, modern, European and domestic vehicles in one event, organisers said.

Judges will scrutinise more than 600 vehicles on their condition and quality of their exterior, interior, engine bay and boot in the festival’s showcase.

For those less interested in the smell of burning rubber, the festival includes live music, vintage fashions and caravans, and a plethora of food.

The Geelong Revival Motoring Festival runs from 24 to 26 November. Limited sprints, hillclimb and motorshow tickets are still available.

Giant tank allows much more crude

FLYING HIGH: Jetstar Australia and New Zealand CEO Dean Salter announces record passenger numbers for Avalon.

Australia’s largest crude oil tank officially opened at Geelong’s refinery on Wednesday.

The $50 million tank could hold 100 million litres of crude oil, enough to meet Victoria’s needs for three days, refinery general manager Thys Heyns said.

“This is a momentous day for the refinery, the Geelong community and Victoria,” he said as he officially opened the tank.

The tank would improve the refinery’s production capabilities and fuel supply security for Victoria, Mr Heyns said.

“This tank increases our crude storage capacity by 40 per cent.”

The tank stands 21 metres high, has a diameter of 84 metres and can hold the equivalent of 40 Olympic swimming pools in crude oil.

About 120 workers used 4000 tonnes of steel and worked 250,000 hours to complete the tank.

The tank can hold about 15 days of crude oil produced from the Bass Strait (Gippsland) oil fields, enough to supply the refinery’s customers for about 30 days.

Viva has invested $300m in infrastructure upgrades over three years to make its Geelong refinery viable, including a jet fuel crane and a bitumen export facility.

“All of these projects further demonstrate our commitment to build a sustainable business in Geelong and support our customers in Victoria,” Mr Heyns said.

A quarter of a million more passengers flew to and from Avalon Airport this year than two years ago, according to airline boss Dean Salter.

“Which is great for the local economy,” he said.

The Jetstar Australia and New Zealand chief executive officer on Tuesday announced the company was on track for a record 780,000 passengers.

The last two years saw a 56 per cent increase in the number of passengers, Mr Salter said at a Geelong Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

“Avalon Airport is the gateway for many people wanting to enjoy some of the great attractions in the area, such as the Great Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles.”

The company recorded an increase of 140,000 passengers this year alone, a Jetstar spokesperson said.

Jetstar operates 97 weekly flights - more than 5000 flights per year - in and out of Avalon Airport to four destinations: Gold Coast, Adelaide, Sydney and Hobart.

The company signed a 10-year agreement in April 2015 with the Victorian Government and Linfox Group to operate air services to the region.

Jetstar first commenced services from Avalon in June 2004. The company employs about 50 staff at the airport.

Avalon Airport chief executive officer Justin Giddings credited the rise in passengers to a combination of Chinese tourism and Geelong’s economic confidence.

“It’s amazing how much Chinese visitation we’re getting,” he said.

“They fly into Sydney and do their Sydney stuff, then jump on a flight to Avalon and drive down to the Great Ocean Road.

“It’s an hour closer to the Great Ocean Road (than Tullamarine Airport) and the flights to Avalon are cheaper.”

Letters Mad about millionaires So our State Government, which is meant to govern for all, will now parcel some $13 million to the yacht club of Geelong’s elite millionaires for their long lusted-for marina.

There is no scarcity of funds for this indulgence but funding for much-needed public housing to house our hundreds of homeless people barely ever rates a mention.

Hopefully the scare from the Northcote byelection knocks some sense into Premier Daniel Andrews’ empty head because he and his government have already done enough damage.

Corio Bay is a major nautical drawcard but if governing for the people, in every respect, is not on the cards then expect a bad result at the next state election.

Or just go away, Mr Andrews.

Monitoring the monitors Congratulations to our new mayor, deputy mayor and councillors; the people of Geelong have spoken in no uncertain terms that we will have the say in who represents us on council.

And the message is loud and clear: the monitors won’t want to be too strenuous because we have practiced councillors with the integrity and skill to nurse the newbies in their roles.

It is a waste of ratepayers’ dollars to be paying minders when it appears they are unnecessary.

The positions of monitors Peter Dorling and Jude Munro appear tainted because they were hand-picked appointments.

Do they sit in on every discussion?

Are they ensconced in the councillors’ lounge or do they share the mayor’s desk?

Do they have a seat in council chambers?

Does their carefully prescribed State Government brief include reporting back to the Premier?

What sway or persuasion do they exercise in the decision-making processes of our council?

Administrators’ unknown cost Geelong and district ratepayers are so pleased our local representatives have returned to make decisions in the best interests of our city and surrounds.

Running up a big total I congratulate the Cotton On Foundation and the 10,400 runners, joggers and walkers who made their way around the 12 and six-kilometre Run Geelong courses last Sunday.

For the eighth consecutive year Run Geelong worked with the community to raise money for children’s health, this year increasing funds for Barwon Health’s paediatric rehabilitation service.

The paediatric rehabilitation service is an invaluable local asset for sick children and their families.

I completed the 6km run in good time.

Thanks to the generosity of the foundation and the thousands of participants we raised $340,000 for the paediatric rehabilitation service, an extraordinary effort.

Run Geelong has seen the completion of the redevelopment of Barwon Health’s children’s ward and the redevelopment of the special care nursery and the maternity day assessment unit.

Run Geelong events have been responsible for over $3.7 million in donations to the hospital, with the partnership continuing to grow year on year.

I am proud of all who continue to participate in this important fun run and I look forward to it being bigger and better next year.

She called on the Federal Government to “introduce more renewable energy sources.”

So both the AIG and Geelong Chamber of Commerce believe that more renewables will reduce electricity prices.

Across the industrialised world, without exception, electricity prices rise sharply as more renewables displace fossil fuels.

This is because renewables are intermittent and cannot operate without dispatchable electricity back-up or huge amounts or storage, both of which massively increase the true cost of renewable electricity.

Fifteen years ago we had heaps of ultra-cheap coal-dispatchable baseload electricity augmented by gas and hydro for peak periods. We had no need for back-up or storage.

Our coal generation capacity has shrunk from 20GW to 15GW over the past six years, while China’s is over 2000GW and still rising.

But Australia must save the planet!

Wow, what of week of letters in last week’s Indy all the dinosaurs were published!

I am always bemused how climate change deniers never acknowledge that the planet is warming, and quite quickly compared to previous warming periods.

Sixteen of the past 17 years were the hottest in recorded history, and 2016 was not just the hottest but the third consecutive hottest year.

Maybe everyone should look up radiative forcing on Wikipedia rather than relying on the assessment of Michael Spencer. After all his was based on Professor Bob Carter’s summary and Prof Carter was a paid mouthpiece for the Heartland Institute - the same institute that worked with Phillip Morris to promote the benefits of cigarette smoking.

Tim Saclier and Peter Rees should know that Hazelwood was closed because it was worn out and unviable.

And, while new coal power stations are being built, the number is considerably less than 1000.

Alan Barron might need to look up dispatchable power, which thermal coal is certainly not.

Guys, please check your facts - coal is a bad investment.

Yes, energy prices are expensive, and this is a problem for consumers and industry. But many other parts of the world seem to manage with much higher levels of renewables - and industry - California and Germany, for example.

Our problem is lack of vision.

A calculated response Michael Spencer said I made my own logarithmic calculation on atmospheric CO2 but preferred the word of Professor Bob Carter who spent his career investigating the subject, which was a funny thing to do for a geologist.

Then Mr Spencer quoted some numbers and their resulting warming but in small incremental ways to show how small the result, then invited readers to accept that further increases were trivial.

To be sure, I got a similar radiative forcing result of .267W/m2 when I increased CO2 concentration by a small 20ppm on top of 390 ppm. But when I repeated the calculation with a doubling of CO2 from the pre-industrial 280ppm to 560ppm the result was 3.7W/m2, which is not trivial and would in fact lead to a temperature rise of 3C. Mr Spencer should be more sceptical of his sources, considering the consequences for those who will have to live with them down the track.

Wilson’s still playing it oh so cool

By Justin Flynn Ross Wilson’s music career spans more than half a century and although the two-time ARIA Hall of Famer has just turned 70, he is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon.

Wilson started his musical journey as the front man of Daddy Cool back in 1970 and then with Mondo Rock, where a string of hits turned him into an Aussie household name.

When the Indy caught up with Wilson, he was about to rehearse for a gig with Mondo Rock at Peter Lehmann Wines in South Australia, but was also looking forward to playing at the Sphinx Hotel in Geelong on Saturday 2 December.

“We love playing in a big room like the Sphinx,” Wilson says.

“I don’t think anyone will be disappointed. We like to see people get up and dance and get moving. When that happens, it makes me happy.”

In a special treat for punters, Wilson will be joined for the show by Mondo Rock lead guitarist Eric McCusker.

“We’ll have one or two songs that people have never heard before because they’ve never been recorded,” Wilson says.

“I still love playing the best of Daddy Cool, but I also love playing songs I wrote myself.”

Touring life for Wilson is busy, but he still enjoys life on the road.

“Sometimes it gets a bit hectic, but I organise my life a little differently now,” he says.

“Now I’m doing things like working really hard for three months and then have a month off.

We are a fly in, fly out kind of group now.”

With a string of hits, such as Eagle Rock, State of the Heart, Chemistry, Come Said the Boy and Cool World, Wilson says he is surprised when he hears his music played on radio. If he’s in the car and a song comes on, he won’t turn the volume down.

“Usually I have a listen to it and analyse it and ask myself ‘does that sound good?’ and then I’ll think ‘yeah, it still sounds good,” he says.

Wilson still enjoys playing Eagle Rock and Come Back Again, but is extremely protective of both songs.

“Those two songs, they shouldn’t be messed around with,” he says.

“Daddy Cool played it (Eagle Rock) so well the four guys were perfect for that song. As soon

as you play the opening notes, people will instantly recognise them.

“If you don’t get it right, it really annoys me.”

While Wilson says the demographic of his audience these days is getting older, he is constantly surprised at how many younger people know his music.

“Sometimes young people will know the songs, but don’t associate them with Daddy Cool or Mondo Rock, but they’ll say ‘oh, you’re the guy

who sings those’,” he says.

“The audience now tends to be older people than younger, though.”

Wilson’s solo career has spanned more than 15 years and he has a plethora of acclaimed albums.

“Go Bongo, Go Wild - I really like that album,” he says.

Come in Peace (2001) is another solo effort that sits comfortably.

SPORT Weekend double-header goes both ways for Cats LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club emerged from last weekend's back-to-back round of T20s pretty much where they started, suffering a loss to Kingston Hawthorn on Saturday, before bouncing back with a solid win against Melbourne on Sunday.

On Saturday, the Cats were never in the game, only managing a paltry 114 in reply to their host's 9/158. Nathan Alexander (3/31) returned the best bowling figures, while Josh Cobb (30) looked the only dangerous batsman.

At home the following day, Australian star Cameron White (85*) set up a healthy first innings total of 3/156, however Tim Ludemann (55) showed his Big Bash experience to lead the side to an impressive eight-wicket win, Cobb (50) again playing an important role.

This weekend, another T20 double header is scheduled - the side will travel to Prahran on Saturday, before hosting Footscray on Sunday.

In the Geelong Cricket Association, the all im-

portant Division 1 match between Geelong City and Grovedale at Richmond Crescent is evenly poised after day one, although the Sharks have Richie Oliver to thank for being in the game at all.

The star English import showed why he is considered the best batsman in the competition with a brutal 128 off just 110 balls at the top of the order, incredibly the team score was just 137 when he was dismissed.

Jacob Nolan (43) was the only other meaningful contribution though, as the rest of the side struggled to reach 252, a competitive total, but one that perhaps could have been larger after such a dominant platform was set early.

Grovedale faced three overs to finish play on day one, doing so without loss, while wiping 11 runs off the deficit.

The strong Tigers batting line-up will back themselves to chase down this target; while the Sharks bowlers, who lack penetration at times, will need to be ultra disciplined and be backed up by their fielders if they are to win this one.

In Division 2, the match of the round between Marshall and Bell Post Hill is evenly poised fol-

lowing a see-sawing first day's play. The Bears batted first and reached 1/50, before a mini-collapse saw them precariously placed at 5/102.

The strong Marshall middle order rallied though, with Jack Cole (55), Mitch McCoach (47) and Stan Grazotis (50*) ensuring a competitive total of 236 was reached.

For the Panthers, Luke Zanchetta (4/28) continued his great form, bowling 23 overs for the day.

This game will go down to the wire tomorrow, the side that can hold their nerve for longer will be the winner.

And in division three, Alexander Thomson were simply outclassed by Thomson, managing just 101 in 55 overs, Jayden Hicks (4/27) the early destroyer for Thomson, before veteran Grant Dew (5/23) cleaned up the tail with his wily off-spin.

Dew (28*) then opened the batting, helping his side to 1/59 at stumps.

Thomson will be sniffing an outright on day two, and if they can reproduce the same form again, may well pull it off.

Mixed bags on offer all around ON THE BITE Chris Pitman From snapper to trout, anglers had no trouble finding mixed bags over the past week.

Clifton Springs was hard to go past for snapper, with the fish spread out along the Point Richards Channel and keen on silver whiting or pilchard baits. Daniel Sparks and Doug Boon spent a morning chasing the snapper, boating excellent fish to 8.3kg on light line. Closer in, the Curlewis Bank also produced snapper for anglers drifting and casting soft plastics. Pike to 1m featured as bycatch along with the odd flathead to 50cm.

St Leonards Pier continued giving landbased anglers the chance to catch squid. Casting size 3 artificial jigs during the evenings was successful, with some anglers managing four to five squid a session. The Bourke Street area remained a hotspot for King George whiting. Anglers again took bag-limit captures of one the region’s best-eating fish.

Swan Bay’s channel provided mixed bags during the run-in tide. Pinkie snapper, silver trevally, flathead and pike all took soft plastics rigged on jig heads just heavy enough to reach the bottom.

Bait fishing the channel into the night produced gummy shark from 4kg to 6kg along with snapper to 4kg. Pilchard and squid were the standout baits.

Offshore areas provided excellent opportunities for bagging tiger flathead. Fez Sepic had a ripper session on the drift, landing impressive tigers to 54cm.

Other offshore anglers continued catching gummy shark and snapper in 30m to 40m.

The Barwon River estuary fished well for small Australian salmon along the Sheepwash section. King George whiting held around the lower reaches, with anglers banking fish to 35cm on pippies.

Surf fishos again caught salmon on Sea Iron Pelacus lures. Fish of 2kg were landed, especially during the lead-up to high tide and northerly winds.

Freshwater anglers had little trouble finding trout. Lake Purrumbete gave up plenty of rainbows to 1.5kg on mudeye fished near the weed, while other anglers also reported brook trout to 1kg.

Trolling the east bank with Tassie Devils never stopped working, with anglers this week finding some nice brown trout.

Lake Tooliorook was an excellent option for land-based anglers who had caught rainbow trout to 2.5kg with Powerbait on running sinker rigs cast out from the jetty. Trolling with pink #55 Tassie Devils also caught trout.

Redfin snapped up lures along the Barwon River in Geelong. The Megabass Siglet lure caught plenty of fish while avoiding snags.

Next week’s weather forecast is promising.

Try targeting snapper between Portarlington and Clifton Springs, while mixed bags are sure to be available from Swan Bay’s channel.

MAKING WAVES: Ethan Huxtable will compete in the Australian Junior Surfing Titles in NSW this weekend.

Our junior surfers take on the best in Aussie titles Jan Juc’s best young surfers will take on the rest of the country in the Australian Junior Surfing Titles this weekend at Culburra, NSW. Eleven surfers feature in the 23-person Victorian team for the competition, which gets underway on Saturday morning.

Culburra Beach’s variety of waves would make for a memorable week of high-level junior competition, Victorian coach Cahill Bell-Warren said.

Bell-Warren was looking forward to building on the success of last year’s event at Phillip Island.

can continue to show our depth and elite talent on the national stage,” he said.

“We have set some really strong training plans and procedures in place over the last 12 months.

“I am really looking forward to get into the trenches next week to give our athletes the best opportunity to achieve both individually and as a team.”

The event features boys and girls under-14, under-16 and under-18 events.

The local stars will be back in action when Australia’s best young surfers journey to Jan Juc next January.

Surfing Australia this week announced the

Hydralyte Sports Surf Series would come to Bells Beach for round one on 13 and 14 January.

The WSL sanctioned Pro Junior events formed part of the 2018 WSL Australasian Junior Qualifying Series, Surfing Australia chief executive officer Andrew Stark said.

“The WSL Pro Junior series is a critical pathway to the elite level of the sport on the WSL World Tour and the Olympics,” he said.

“We look forward to crowning champions over the next three years and watching these Aussie junior surfers go onto win at the highest level of the sport.”
