By Kyra Gillespie Pakenham’s most congested arterial road has been promised a facelift under a Liberal Nationals Government in 2018.

The Racecourse Road and Bald Hill Road intersection has been declared one of the worst of 55 in Victoria by Opposition Leader Matthew Guy. Visiting the site on Tuesday 21 November, the Shadow Minister for Roads and Infrastructure David Hodgett revealed that a grade separation was the likely solution to counteract the local volume of traffic.

“Pakenham has been neglected for far too long while Daniel Andrews has allowed traffic congestion,” Mr Hodgett said.

“Residents are the eyes and the ears of the community and we will do everything we can to accommodate their needs.”

Announcing what he describes as “the biggest traffic congestion project in Victoria’s history”, Mr Guy’s Get Victoria Moving initiative targets a number of the state’s problematic arterial roads.

“A Liberal Nationals Government will commit between $4.1 billion to $5.3 billion to removing traffic lights and roundabouts through grade separations at 55 of Melbourne and Geelong’s most congested intersections on our busiest arterial roads,” he said.

“My project continues the work of the level crossing removal program to eliminate congestion hotspots across Melbourne and Geelong.

“Everyone agrees level crossing removals will help free-up traffic congestion, but it’s only part of the solution.

“The other part of the solution is to remove some of the worst congested traffic light intersections and major roundabouts by grade separating them.”

While local residents and business owners have welcomed the proposal after years of tackling the problematic road, many think there are more pressing issues that need to be addressed on Racecourse Road.

Melbourne Rotomould, a local plastic rotational moulding manufacturer operating out of Pakenham, said it was suffering due to a combination of the road conditions and the poor train signalling at Pakenham Station.

“The roads are a massive problem for business and for the past nine years we’ve had to push back trucks earlier and earlier in order to get through the traffic to jobs on time,” busi-

Even in the middle of the day, three trucks struggle to navigate Pakenham’s Racecourse Road and Bald Hill Road intersection. 175355 ness co-director Tim Leeds said.

“We have a commitment to customers to have trucks arrive at the right place and the right time and it’s nearly impossible to be efficient with the conditions of this intersection.

“But the train signalling at Pakenham Station is probably a bigger issue. The signals get triggered as soon as the train leaves Cardinia station, meaning the gates are coming down before the train has even reached the platform.

“You can be waiting anywhere from 7-10 minutes, I’ve timed it. It’s ridiculous and easily fixable.”

Pakenham resident and mother Mikayla Kennett has also been petitioning for pedestrian crossings for several months.

“Racecourse Road only has one suitable pedestrian crossing which is located near the

milk bar on the corner of Racecourse Road and Cameron Way,” Ms Kennett said.

“Although this crossing is suitable for pedestrian use, it is not suitable for the use of young families and needs to be upgraded to a more appropriate and safe crossing.

“The crossing itself is nothing more than a small road island for pedestrians to stand or wait at, in the centre of the busy traffic travelling at 60kilometres per hour on either side.”

Liberal Bass MP Brian Paynter said the proposal is “a great result for the community in Pakenham”, but agrees that the entire stretch of Racecourse Road needs to be upgraded.

“Time is money for motorists and surrounding businesses.

“When I first moved to Pakenham as a kid the estate behind Racecourse Road was one of the original estates to be built, yet the road

hasn’t changed in all those years.

“I will be pushing for upgrades to happen on both ends of Racecourse Road, including pedestrian crossings.”

Traffic congestion costs the Australian economy about $5.54 billion a year, with 77 per cent of Cardinia residents taking a car to work every day according to recent census data.

Matthew Guy’s major infrastructure project is also estimated to create about 5000 new jobs in addition to indirect jobs.

Key design considerations will include road safety, efficient movement of traffic and aesthetics.

Funding for the project will be come from the Victorian Government, the Federal Government and the proceeds of the sale of the Victorian share of the Snowy Hydro Scheme.

Stop and think for a moment: what’s the worst thing about life in our suburbs?

Some would say crime, lack of jobs, or maybe a lack of infrastructure, maybe even a transient community or a lack of connectedness.

But I’d argue - and call it a First World problem if you will - that road congestion is the real issue.

How many of our road rage incidents come from the sheer, mind-numbing frustration of inching your tonne or so of metal along the Monash?

Of course, the Monash ranks highly on the hate list. But that’s just the beginning.

What about Racecourse Road in Pakenham, the dreaded Berwick at school pick-up time, Cranbourne’s main street or the peak-hour gridlock that surrounds Dandenong?

Nowhere else in Melbourne do we see such a flood of vehicles without the infrastructure to support them, as we do in the South-East.

And if anyone is bold enough to suggest a congestion charge, taxing by kilometres driven, or any other punitive actions against car owners, let me blow the whistle right now. It’s not on.

Cars created this wide brown land. They are an Australian birthright. And you can prise them from our cold, dead fingers.

Technology, which created this, may yet save us. Futurists suggest that fleets of self-driving cars will make car ownership redundant. There will be fewer of them, they’ll interact together, and they’ll simply go away when you don’t want them (as if that could ever happen).

The South-East shall rise again ... on four wheels.

Jail for chucking cricketer

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man in his early forties was jailed over a drunken late-night home invasion in which he threw a large rock at his partner’s former husband.

The keen cricketer - with little criminal history - was fuelled with about 15 to 20 drinks after attending a Test Match at the MCG followed by drinks at a Berwick pub on 27 December, 2016, the County Court of Victoria heard.

He told police that he “cracked” when he was picked up from the pub by his apparently intoxicated partner.

“I had enough of the four years of bulls*** with a depressed alcoholic (his partner) who used to be married to that person (the victim).”

However he couldn’t remember the ensuing assault and aggravated burglary, he told police.

The court heard the man had armed himself with two large rocks and entered through the unlocked front door of the victim’s Cranbourne North house late that night.

With the victim’s three teen and adult children inside the home, the man yelled “Where is he?” and hurled a rock at the victim who emerged from the bedroom.

The victim dodged the projectile which created a large hole in a plasterboard interior wall.

The man wrestled with the victim and the victim’s son in the kitchen, and was pushed down the hallway out the front door.

“Come outside. I’ll bash the f*** out of you,” the man yelled.

He hurled a large rock through the home’s front window, and smashed the victim’s car’s windscreen and passenger window, bent the car aerial and broke a letter box.

Narre Warren police stated the man was kept in police cells for three-and-a-half hours due to his drunkenness.

In sentencing on 20 November, Judge Gabriele Cannon noted the profound impacts on the victim and his three children.

The victims stated they were fearful during the attack and felt unsafe in the house ever since.

cuts as well as a swollen elbow which required daily pain relief.

The injury restricted the victim in daily tasks and caused him to give up sport.

The offending was “serious”, aggravated by being late at night and in front of the victim’s children, Judge Cannon said.

There had been a long-standing “soap-opera like” acrimony between the families, she said.

The man had a limited criminal history but a history of binge drinking, cannabis smoking and at times regular intravenous amphetamine use.

The man was convicted and jailed for three years with a 15-month non-parole period.

Serey stands for ‘values’ and ‘local’ in state election

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Being a true local counts, says the Liberals’ freshly endorsed candidate for Narre Warren South.

Susan Serey, the conservative Casey councillor who previously ran for the seat in 2014, is back in battle for the 2018 election.

To succeed, she needs a swing of more than 5.5 per cent against ALP candidate and National Union of Workers state secretary Gary Maas.

Cr Serey, a Berwick accountant and business development worker, says she’s always lived in Casey.

This was unlike her opponent who was seeking to move from St Kilda East to a local rental property, she adds.

“A local is something we have never had,” she said.

“I’m not going to promise to move in (to the electorate) and then not move in.”

Her interest in politics was kindled not long after volunteering at St Vincent de Paul’s as a 15-year-old.

She started volunteering with her “mentor” Inga Peulich’s office in Chelsea - a person who shares her socially conservative “values”.

“I don’t want our country, our values, our state being undermined by things that the public don’t want.

“They don’t want drug injecting rooms, they don’t want euthanasia, they don’t want Safe Schools and radical teaching at schools, they want Australia Day to continue on 26 January.”

On same-sex marriage, Cr Serey pointed to the low 51-per cent ‘Yes’ count in Holt - which covers much of Hampton Park, Cranbourne and Narre Warren.

“It’s a clear indication that people don’t want to get their values trashed and changed at the drop of a hat.”

There was a curious recent moment when Liberal member Geoff Ablett was elected Casey mayor for the third time recently.

While other councillors toasted Cr Ablett with congratulations at the 13 November meeting, Cr Serey declined to comment.

“How could I congratulate someone who doesn’t have the courtesy to tell me what was going on?

“If he wants to play games, it’s his fault not mine.”

Her other main issues are law and order, roads and public transport - a key concern for the 80 per cent of employed Casey residents who commute outside Casey for work.

She said City of Casey’s transport wish-list of up to $5 billion was possible within the next State Government term. It would include a rail extension to Clyde, bus route improvements and about $2 billion of arterial road upgrades.

“I think it needs to be done in the City of Casey.

“The transport situation is getting worse and worse.”

Citing a rising crime rate, Cr Serey says she doesn’t feel safe living in Casey.

“One day it will happen to me and my family - and that’s scary.”

She is also concerned by the rising numbers taking up drugs - and the need to significantly boost Victoria’s drug-rehab centres and cut the six-month waiting lists for ‘ice’ addicts.

In contrast, the trial of a safe-injecting room in Richmond would not save lives and would become a beacon for drug-dealers, she said.

In 2014, Cr Serey won a one per cent swing against the ALP incumbent Judith Couacaud Graley. It showed people didn’t like to be “tak-

en for granted”.

Her 2018 rival Mr Maas said he was hopeful of settling into “my new community” by the end of this year.

In the meantime he said he’d been meeting with local constituents, community leaders, teachers and principals.

He would continue the work of sitting MP Ms Graley to lobby for road and public transport upgrades, including the $1 billion of road projects already being carried out.

“The former Liberal Government did not plan for the population growth that has been experienced in the outer south-eastern suburbs.

“These consequences are being felt by the local community.”

Preparation Set the steam assist oven to 220C on steam assist cooking function. Butterfly chicken by removing the back bone down either side of the bird keeping as close as possible to the joints. Open up, and using a knife hit the top of the breast plate in its thickest part splitting the plate open. Spread open and flatten with hand.

Place chicken on a tray with greaseproof paper. Rub with oil and seasoning. Place in oven for a cook time of 40 minutes. Set minute minder for 15 minutes. Place onions and beets in an oven proof dish and cover with brown sugar and vinegar. Mix well. When minute minder has completed 15 minutes, place onions and beets in oven with chicken for remaining 25 minutes.

Carve chicken and serve with trimmings.

I wish to endorse and support the comment by John Glazebrook ('Accurate Prediction', Pakenham Officer Star News 16 November).

As a resident of Casey, his anticipation of a successful result from the election of new mayor Geoff Ablett regarding leadership in the municipality to ensure more employment and local jobs including welfare and environment resources sounds really positive.

His analysis of the federal and state government responsibility for the overwhelming growth that has flowed through Casey and now into Cardinia Shire is spot on. We are now seeing continuing expansion with a proposed new suburb eastward towards Nar Nar Goon where developers rub their hands with satisfaction as they wait for the continuing flow of population growth to justify more subdivision of land.

As John Glazebrook correctly points out, the two government levels responsible for the impacts of this unrelenting growth need to strike a balance and take responsibility in providing more compensation to the growth area local councils who have to carry the financial, social and environmental costs that result from uncontrolled growth policy.

Painting is Bunjil’s heart

By Cam Lucadou-Wells An iconic painting that hangs proudly in a Narre Warren office is a little-known inspiration for the design of Casey’s civic-arts hub Bunjil Place.

The painting in question is Meeting of Many Paths - a community grant artwork created for Casey North Community Information and Support Service.

It has had pride of place at the CISS offices since it was painted by the late Aboriginal artist Cathy Adams in 2001.

Its owners at CISS however had little inkling of the earthy painting’s influence on Bunjil Place until recently.

Hardly any knew at CISS’s recent AGM - until a video interview was screened with Bunjil architects FJMT which explained the link.

In the video, FJMT stated that they drew upon the painting’s depiction of place, its wildlife and the new “tribes” that have settled in Casey.

The building’s namesake Bunjil the Eagle also found expression in the structure’s sweeping wings.

Speaking soon after the AGM, CISS executive director Susan Magee said she could see the painting’s influence.

The way all paths lead to Bunjil’s welcoming central plaza among the rolling lawns and channels.

Meeting of Many Paths warmly depicts a welcome stick planted in a circular hub with ‘many paths’ of welcome leading to its heart.

The indigenous wildlife, the brolga-inhabited swampland in what was known as 'Narre Narre Warren’ and greetings in the languages of the area’s “new tribes” are represented.

Its style is typical of Indigenous artwork in this region, Ms Magee says.

Curiously though, CISS had no interaction with the project nor its architects.

“I had no idea,” Ms Magee said.

“Why didn’t they talk to us from the beginning?”

with Daniel Margariti, Young Adult Cancer Support founder

Who are you?

I am a 26-year-old two times cancer survivor, first diagnosed with testicular cancer at age 18, and diagnosed again at 24 with secondary testicular cancer in the abdomen, liver and lungs.

I’m taking part in the 2018 Casey Relay for Life, which is aiming to raise an incredible total of $4 million in its short 10-year history.

What is something people don’t know about you?

I wanted to be a photographer for National Geographic when I was a child, and on a threemonth trip travelling overland through southern Africa I got to live out that childhood fantasy going on safari and taking around 5000 photos.

What was your most memorable moment?

On my gap year after graduating from Monash University, I went to volunteer in an orphanage in Tanzania. I brought with me 40 children’s books which were so appreciated by the kids, having them calling out one after the other to read with them. Also seeing the joy on the kids’ faces when I organised on my last day to take them to the beach. Even though they lived not far from the coast, it was the first time most of them had seen the sea, and their expressions of joy were priceless and extremely memorable.

What would your last meal be?

My Nonna’s pasta with eggplant meatballs and for dessert the strawberry trifle my other Nonna makes, along with my mother’s famous cholate mousse.

What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness?

I would like to have the ability to go back in time to see the day that World War II ended and to experience the pure joy and relief the entire world would have felt.

What is your favourite TV show?

My favourite TV show would be the BBC ‘Planet Earth’ series by David Attenbourgh, as I love documentaries.

One day while playing soccer I fell on top of another primary school boy and broke his leg with my fat unco-ordinated 10-year-old bum, I felt so terrible about it that I picked up and carried the injured schoolmate to the sick bay, it was very embarrassing explaining that I sat on someone’s leg and broke it.

What was your first or best concert?

I have never really been to a concert or music festival but I would love to see Bruno Mars live if I was to go to a concert, as I love that he has brought funk and soul music back to popular culture.

Leadership tribute for trio

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Many things have changed in Casey in the past 20 years.

But the leadership at the celebrated Casey North Community Information and Support Service (CISS) is not one of them.

At its annual general meeting, Casey North CISS paid tribute to its enduring executive director Susan Magee, social worker Lidia Gruszka and admin manager Samantha Findlay.

The three have served throughout Casey North CISS’s 20-year history.

They’ve seen countless office moves, hundreds of volunteers, a Global Financial Crisis and an ever-larger populace in Casey.

“If anyone had suggested to me 20 years ago that I would still be here ... I am not sure I would have believed them,” Ms Magee told the AGM dinner at Bunjil Place on 15 November.

“The time has gone quickly for me, and there has always been a new challenge to rise to.”

Ms Gruszka said it was “mind-blowing” to be recognised for her service.

No, it’s not from a classy food truck or a MasterChef’s restaurant, but grown by primary students in their school garden and kitchen.

Junior students at Narre Warren South P-12 shrug when told how accomplished their cooking is. It’s easy, the budding cooks say.

Their garden outside is a parade of herbs and greens in hand-made scarecrows in large planter boxes.

There’s a strong recycling ethos - such as the clapped-out lawn mower that is now a kind of installation garden, or the student-built pizza

oven with vibrant mosaics.

Two-hundred kids a week discover the joys of gardening and cooking in the school’s Stephanie Alexander program.

They were visited on 14 November by developers Blueways Group and Wolfdene, who donated $5000 to the program.

It’s a seed that will help the school buy in a garden shade-cloth, benches and seats, as well as shift back its raised garden beds after the building of two synthetic soccer pitches.

The companies have 2000 lots in planning or construction in Casey, Jon Atchison of Wolfdene said.

“As a responsible corporate citizen we like to give back to these areas that we develop.”

we can settle them and make a difference.

“So that they don’t leave in tears.”

Ms Findlay paid tribute to the passion and culture of the service - and to the 6200 annual hours put in by volunteers.

“It’s just a great place to work.”

Ms Magee also gave a dire warning of the debt-laden families on the edge of “extreme financial distress”.

Last year, the CISS provided more than $390,000 of emergency relief to more than 4000 visitors - 132 of those were homeless.

If interest rates took off, “a scenario far worse than the last GFC could be ahead of us,” Ms Magee said.

In a popular move, Kay Morland nominated for the CISS board - taking the seat of her late husband and Casey mayor Mick Morland who was tragically killed in June.

The CISS continues to produce free financial resource guides for low-income households as well as families at the brink of breakdown.

It also provides financial counselling, no interest loans, Christmas hampers and winter coats.

Festive plan for big night

For the first time Clyde Carols by Candlelight will kick off the Casey Christmas Carols at the Hillcrest Christian College Oval in Clyde North on Saturday 2 December.

The event’s organiser Pastor Kerrigan LaBrooy said he was “tremendously excited” for the fun-filled family night for the entire community, which is hosted by Gethsemane Church and supported by Casey Council.

The singer-songwriter who will also perform on the evening said: “We want to make this event affordable for all families to come and enjoy the festive cheer without having to worry about affordability.”

Pastor La-Brooy said entry and entertainment was free, with 2000 vouchers valued at $500 each on offer for the first 2000 attendees at the event, compliments of Barry Bourke Motors - to put towards a purchase of new or used car.

“We aim to create an aura of festive cheer across the oval, with free children’s amusements, local businesses volunteering, vendors displaying their merchandise, live music, comradeship, free giveaways and even some free food.”

He said the festive cheer would also include a sausage sizzle, coffee van, ice-cream, popcorn, slushies, and cakes.

Performers this year are Derrick Junkeer, Mel Manuel, Lisa Ann, Noami Horsley, Dancin’Lines, and Ebony Portelli, Triple Treat Talent Academy, and Gethsemane Church Choir.

Christmas kitten explosion RSPCA shelters are attempting to make room for the anticipated summertime explosion in homeless kittens.

The organisation is dropping cat adoption fees from $120 to $39 in a bid to re-home 200 cats in four days.

The cats - over four months old - are desexed, microchipped, vaccinated and have had veterinary checks.

Chief executive Dr Liz Walker said cats as young as five months had little difficulty conceiving and giving birth in the warm season.

“Nearly every un-desexed female cat who is exposed to an un-desexed male during the

warmer months will become pregnant.

“We really want to emphasise that the relatively low cost of desexing far outweighs the cost to the community of caring for cats and kittens.”

In 2016-'17, more than 4000 kittens arrived in RSPCA shelters. Most landed between November and April.

“We need to break this cycle of homelessness that so many of these beautiful creatures experience,” Dr Walker said.

“Desexing is the most effective strategy.”

Berwick running marvel Julie McKnight reports that she has indeed completed her dream run - finishing the famous New York Marathon this month.

The 45-year-old placed 16,167th in the 60,000-strong field in an event that surpassed even her high expectations.

The memories - including bumping into Hollywood star Whoopi Goldberg - will last a lifetime, she told Star News.

It’s usually not a good way to open your court defence with a refusal to accept the jurisdiction of the court.

Often when that’s used, you know the defendant’s arguments are going downhill fast.

So it was the case at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court by a man who claimed he was not guilty - because he claimed he had a different surname than was on his driving summons charge.

The judge stood the case down after getting tired of the man talking over him.

After a break, the man refused to indicated a suitable date for a contest hearing, and refused to take documents of the police case.

He replied three times: “Because it’s not my name, sir.

“It would be fraudulent of me to take it.”

The case was set aside for a contest next month.

Serey not It was the return of the local candidate for the Liberals in Narre Warren South.

However it appears Susan Serey may be not quite the household name in party headquarters.

Her candidacy was announced in a pressrelease email, trumpeting: ‘Susan Seyer Liberal for Narre Warren South’.

Enjoying the celebrations with warm words for friends and colleagues were Director Mark Bond, Partners Matt Rice and Andrew Facey, and Director Graham Josh Kendall.

Word around Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was that the young man had gone on a week’s bender after the Grand Final victory and missed his court-ordered appointments.

He faced the music in front of a judge recently. From what we hear though, the judge wasn’t impressed with the ‘Richmond’ defence.

Meanwhile, an outlaw motorcycle gang member is fighting a charge of assaulting a parking inspector.

His lawyer argued at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that his client was “quite wellmannered” as he argued his parking ticket was “not justified”.

Maybe some words “not heard in Sunday school” were used, but he didn’t touch the officer, the lawyer said.

“So your client is a member of (said outlaw motorcycle gang) and went to have a nice conversation with the parking officer?” the judge mused.

You see the 75-year-old has already had his life-changing moment in greyhound racing and it came almost 30 years to the day - with the purchase of Shining Chariot.

“He was the life changer, he put me on the map, I’d probably be broke if he didn’t come along,” Lieshout said, just days out from the Sandown Park classic.

“He won races all over the place, Olympic Park and Sandown and a few country cups and then he served more than 1100 bitches as well.

He basically paid for everything I owned back then.”

Lieshout’s next big moment may be right on his doorstep, with Aston Miley drawing box seven for Australia’s greatest race - worth $420,000 to the winner.

“It would be the cream on the cake if she happened to win,” Lieshout admitted, with a raspy excitement in his voice.

“That sort of money would change things for sure, I might have to buy myself a new Mercedes or something flash like that.”

The daughter of Barcia Bale-Aston Elle, and litter sister to cup favourite Aston Dee Bee, has only been in Lieshout’s care since May, but has made quite an impression on her trainer since taking over the role as the kennel’s top dog.

Hudson McKay is living proof that time flies when you’re having fun with the 10-year-old set to represent Victoria in the Pacific School Games to be held in Adelaide in early December.

The St Mary’s Primary School student from Berwick will run for his state in the 200-metre sprint and relay after finishing second in the School Sport Victoria State Championships at Lakeside Stadium recently.

Hudson, who joined Casey Little Athletics - now Berwick Little Athletics - when he was five, has put quite a record together after spending half of his young life at the club.

He has broken centre records at Berwick in the 100 and 200-metre sprints, as well as the 400 metres, and equalled the centre's high jump record which stood for 12 years.

He has also won the junior champion award at Berwick and is a multiple gold medallist at the Gippsland championships and a multiple finalist at state level.

But qualifying for the Pacific Games takes things to a whole new level altogether.

“I’m really excited about representing Victoria,” Hudson said, before explaining how he qualified for the big event.

“We ran a heat and had to qualify top eight to get into the final. I finished second in my heat and qualified, and then ran second in the final.”

Hudson, who has a personal best of 29.13, said he had improved his running a lot in re-

cent times. He puts that down to some astute coaching from dad Ben and the coaches he has at Berwick.

“I wasn’t that fast when I started, but my parents did a little bit of Little Athletics when they were younger and they thought I might like it and it just went on from there,” he said.

“I’ve made a lot of improvement recently and working on my technique is only going to make me run faster as I get older. All the coaches at Berwick, and dad, have helped me out heaps along the way.”

Hudson is a true all-rounder with basketball, football and swimming all forming part of his sporting adventure. But it’s little athletics that he truly loves most.

“I do love it, because there’s lot of variety in what you can do with throwing, jumping, long-distance events, and the variety is what I love most,” he said.

Hudson has one of his running singlets signed by sprinting legend Usain Bolt which hangs proudly from his bedroom wall. He hopes to emulate the style of Bolt when he takes to the starting blocks in Adelaide.

“I have to make sure I explode out of the starting line and really drive my arms forward,” he said.

“Then it’s about getting in to your main stride, trying to relax, staying calm and have fun and just run as fast as you can.”

That’s the spirit Hudson ... time flies when you’re having fun!

Perera’s crucial century

By Russell Bennett A crucial century from skipper Bathiya Perera took Upper Beaconsfield to a strong first day’s total against Cardinia on the first day of round six in the WGCA Premier Division on Saturday.

In a clash that could prove vital in the race for finals positions, after being sent in to bat the Maroons were in serious trouble early at 2/10 with the in-form Kallan Braid-Ball (2/57) striking twice to remove the dangerous Zenith Wickramanayaka (7) and Jonathon Caderamanpulle (0).

A 60-run stand between Imesh Jayasekara (42) and Kulith Rabel (32) then helped steady the ship but spin twins Dwayne Doig and Travis Wheller (3/68) struck in the space of five runs to have the visitors seemingly back on the ropes at 4/75.

Perera then stood up when his side needed him most - showing his class in notching his maiden century for the club.

Perera was one of the stand-out batsmen in the DDCA’s top turf tier before making the switch to synthetic to lead the Maroons. After giving glimpses into his superb talent with a series of half-centuries over recent seasons, he raised the bat for triple figures for the first time as an Upper Beaconsfield player on Saturday leading from the front.

After Jayasekara fell at 5/101, Perera took charge before ultimately being the last wicket to fall at 236 in the 76th over.

Doig was a real shining light with the ball for the Bulls - claiming 5/62 in a mammoth 30 overs - including the wickets of Jayasekara and Rabel.

Ben Parrott and skipper Alex Nooy will resume for the Bulls at 0/2 this week with the Maroons’ total well within reach if the home side maintains its composure.

Maiden tons are great for mates

By David Nagel Catani G Grade captain Matt Coleman and his deputy Cameron Wagstaff had one thing on their mind as they walked out to the middle against Cranbourne Meadows at the Lyndhurst Secondary College on Saturday.

And that was to give their team a good start after three consecutive losses had seen the Cats slip to fifth on the ladder in the six-team competition.

Well they certainly delivered - and in spades - with the pair sharing a 272-run stand and the joy of making their maiden centuries together on the same day.

Wagstaff struck first, the 42-year-old reaching triple figures on his way to a brilliant innings of 153, the main platform for a team score of 5/378 that has the Cats in the stron-

gest of strong positions as the two teams head into day two this weekend.

Wagstaff had not come close to a century in the past, so took to the task with relish with no mental baggage of failed attempts gone by.

But that wasn’t the case for Coleman, who played juniors at Catani before taking a very long break to take care of business on the farm.

He returned to the club a few years back, when son Ben started playing in the Under 12s, and was quickly enticed back to the crease.

He’s had his share of near misses in the past, but finally cracked it for his maiden ton, overcoming some late-innings nerves in the process.

“I’ve made a few 80s and 90s before and it’s still funny how you tighten up when you get close to making a century,” Coleman said.

“I was a bit scratchy to start with, I think I was on 15 when Cam got to 50, but I hung there and things turned around after that.”

The 49-year-old said being just 22 yards away when Wagstaff made his century made him dig in just that little bit harder.

“There’s no doubt I tightened up a bit and became a bit more cautious as I got closer,” he said.

“And watching Cam get his century first made me realise how badly I actually wanted one. It was a great feeling for us both to be out there for each other when we made it.”

The day became even more special for Matt - who made 126 - when his son Ben finished the day on 28 not out.

keeper-batsman Ben Spicer (58) compiled the innings’ defining partnership after tea.

When Mathers was ultimately caught by Nick Miles at backward point off Shane White, Spicer took on the role of the aggressor - dealing mainly in boundaries before he was eventually caught on the mid-wicket fence with the score at 6/218.
