Stomped at party By Brendan Rees A young mother has told how she was repeatedly stomped and “smashed into a fence paling” as she tried to perform first aid on a friend after a Bachelors and Spinsters Ball in Tooradin spiralled out of control on the weekend. Emergency crews were called to a recreation reserve on the South Gippsland Highway near Bakewell Street shortly before 12.30am on Sunday 19 November, when the party turned into a bloody brawl. Two men, a 24-year-old from Alexandra and a 22-year-old from Traralgon, were taken to hospital with serious injuries, Victoria Police said. Ariel Kelly, 22 said security “did nothing” when she was allegedly repeatedly kicked and stomped after rushing to the aid of a friend who had also been king-hit. She said she began resuscitating her friend who was “on the ground in a ball” after being randomly attacked before the same male allegedly turned on her. “He threw me into a fence paling and kicked me in the throat, punched me and I put my head into my knees to try and protect my face and he stomped on my head and kicked me in the back. I thought he was going to break my neck for sure.” “I’ve fractured my neck before and I was thinking ‘God, if I break my neck or something like that, I’m done’.” The mother of a one-year-old suffered nerve damage, soft tissue damage, internal and external bruising as well as ligament bruising. “Luckily no breaks, thank God. I’m in a fair amount of pain at the moment - pretty much living on pain killers.” “I’m still trying to wrap my head around it that it happened.” Ms Kelly, of Traralgon said the brawl was “absolutely appalling” and believes the bloodshed could have been avoided. “The security at the event was just terrible. They didn’t do anything. They just kept letting this guy go. He wasn’t detained, there wasn’t police called. “It was disgusting. It didn’t matter who you were, he was going to hit you. My friends said it was obvious he targeted me.”
She said she thought the man was going to kill her friend when she told him to “get off.” She said paramedics arrived but more fights erupted, adding: “It just kept going.” “Once he stopped laying into me he started fighting another guy on top of me. It was absolutely insane. The security did nothing to stop it. They didn’t care.” “I reckon the guy was on drugs. His eyes were piercing. They were huge.” Ms Kelly was released from The Alfred hospital Tuesday morning, 21 November in a neck brace, and although she admits being lucky to walk away alive, she added: “It’s stressful at the moment. I can’t pick my kid up properly.” “It was the worst B and S I have ever been to. It was insane.” Event organiser Gippy BnS confirmed on Facebook there had been injuries at the Tooradin ball. “Unfortunately, there was an incident last night and two people were taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition,” the Facebook post of Sunday, November 19 said. “I’m absolutely disgusted by the lack of control and security,” one woman posted on Facebook. Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating and say no arrests have been made, adding a number of others were treated for minor injuries. Detective Senior Constable Emily Donnelly said: “I believe it started from verbal dispute between two different parties.” “There was security there but it was drugfuelled violence and unacceptable behaviour.” She said the victims were allegedly punched, kicked, and stomped on, while on the ground. “We had three people admitted to hospital with serious but stable injuries to their head, neck and back.” “Unfortunately for us at the minute they’re in hospital and they’re in quite a bad way.” Asked if the incident was alcohol-fuelled, she said: “Definitely, 100 per cent.” Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Casey Crime Investigation on 9705 3111.
