Veteran is the mayor

By Derek Schlennstedt Veteran Walling Ward councillor Len Cox will lead Yarra Ranges Council as mayor for the next year after he was elected to the position of Yarra Ranges Council mayor on Tuesday 14 November.

In a career that has spanned four decades, it will be Cr Cox’s sixth time at the helm.

At the other end of the spectrum, in his first term on council, Cr Tony Stevenson was also elected to take on the duties of deputy mayor.

Councillor Fiona McAllister said that despite being the newest face among the chamber, councillors had been impressed by Cr Stevenson’s work.

Both were the only nominees for their respective roles and were elected unanimously at the council meeting.

Cr Cox said he was honoured to lead a municipality such as Yarra Ranges which he said “could be called the best council in the state of Victoria ... maybe even further afield”.

Garr y keeps it up five years in the CFA. “Yet Garry’s been here for more than half of the brigade’s 91-year life,” he said.

“To multiply the average five years by 10 is one hell of a bloody achievement.”

Along with the 50-year service medal, Mr Lee was presented with a replica model of the first firetruck he ever drove.

Family members also attended the presentation to help celebrate Mr Lee’s big milestone.

Speaking on his time with Upper Ferntree Gully, Mr Lee said he wasn’t done with CFA just yet.

“I’ve enjoyed these 50 years and intend to stay longer,” Mr Lee said “I’m going to try for 55, so let’s see how I go.”

For the first time in its 91-year history, an Upper Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade volunteer has clocked up half a century of service.

Ex-captain Garry Lee was presented with his 50-year service medal at the brigade’s annual award night on 11 November.

Mr Lee was praised by the brigade’s current captain Peter Smith as an integral member of the team.

“We’re very fortunate to have Garry in the brigade,” Mr Smith said.

“He’s held every position in the brigade from the top to the bottom, bottom to top and all those in between.”

Mr Smith said Garry’s 50 years of service were a rarity, as the average volunteer spent just

Time to get fire ready In its 90th year of service, Olinda Fire Brigade is helping hills communities to be prepared for the upcoming fire season.

On Sunday 26 November, the station will open its doors to the public from 10am to 3pm.

Community members are welcome to drop in and take a look, while learning more about fire planning and how best to prepare themselves and their properties.

With local knowledge, and an opportunity to talk directly with fire brigade members, this represents an opportunity not to be missed.

Meanwhile, there will be lots of fun on the day, too, with lots of water to squirt and fun activities for the kids.

As always, there is the obligatory sausage sizzle, icy poles available and a chance to see the work of local volunteers.

Cr Collin Ross was elected mayor of the Cardinia Shire at council’s annual statutory meeting on Monday 13 November.

Now in his 10th term as a councillor, Cr Ross welcomed the appointment and expressed his gratitude and optimism for the coming year.

“It is an honour to be elected to represent our community as mayor over the next 12 months,” Cr Ross said.

“Having served as a councillor for the past decade, I am eager to be leading this council through its second term and to continue working together to achieve our council plan objectives.

“As elected councillors, we are here to represent and speak to the needs of our community.

For me, the next 12 months as mayor provide an opportunity to build people’s connection with the council, so that we are doing just that.”

In addition, Cardinia Shire’s 2016-’17 mayor, Cr Brett Owen was elected deputy mayor for 2017-‘18.

Cr Ross thanked Cr Brett Owen for his commitment to his role as mayor over the past 12 months.

“Our previous mayor, Cr Brett Owen, has done a great job leading this council through its first term as we developed our four-year council plan and laid the foundations for our full term,” Cr Ross said.

“I am looking forward to having his support as deputy mayor over the next year.”

Care in good taste

By Derek Schlennstedt The Foothills Community Care group is on the verge of constructing a new and much-needed kitchen to help support vulnerable families and individuals in and around the Dandenong Ranges.

Though they still need some help to get there.

The small community-based organisation prepares over 9000 meals every year from its 40-year-old kitchen at the Upwey Baptist Community Church.

Every Monday night the group caters for around 100 people, with minimal facilities, even washing all the dishes by hand in one sink.

Now the group is asking for the support of the community to help them progress and further grow the capacity of people they can help.

“We have 100 people around our tables every week, sharing the meals we provide for free,” Foothills CEO Stephen Barrington said.

“Since we’ve started in Upwey, we’ve been full to bursting every week ... the need is there in

the community and we need to grow to meet it.”

Jason Wood, Liberal Member for La Trobe is advocating for funding for the group under the Stronger Communities Grant and felt confident that the group would receive the funding.

“I’m very confident of securing the funding because this is just such a great project ... this is one of the ones where we have an independent committee and to me this ticks every box,” Mr Wood said.

So far the Foothills group has pulled together funds to help develop the kitchen and have created plans for the construction, but they are still short of funding, and even with the grant will still need help from the community.

The group has also partnered with the Box Hill Institute to help promote hospitality jobs in the region by offering training opportunities for younger students.

Jason Wood said that with so many cafes in the Dandenong Ranges, this would be an ideal and

great intiative.

“This is huge ... from my perspective the work they do here with providing meals is unbelievable and fantastic for the local community but also, just as importantly if they can train people up, who may be unemployed, we have all these cafes, and they are always screaming for staff and the training here will be absolutely vital.

But the Foothills group, which consists of over 200 volunteers, said they’ll first need a new kitchen to be able to cater for the students.

“Our partnership with Box Hill Institute will allow us to really grow to meet the needs in the community but we’re being held back by a very well-used, well-loved but very old kitchen that’s in need of an upgrade,” Mr Barrington said.

Veteran Len Cox is back in mayor’s chair

By Kath Gannaway Veteran Walling Ward councillor Len Cox will lead Yarra Ranges Council as mayor for the next year.

He was elected to Lilydale Council in 1982 and, except for two years in exile during the amalgamation, has an unbroken record.

At the other end of the spectrum, in his first term on council, Cr Tony Stevenson will take on the duties of deputy mayor.

Both were the only nominees for their respective roles and were elected unanimously at the council meeting on Tuesday 14 November.

Nominating Cr Cox, Cr Jim Child spoke of his impressive record over many years but paid particular tribute to his leadership as mayor during the 2009 bushfires.

“When I think back to that significant event, when we lost 13 members of our community, we had a leader in the council at that time in Cr Cox who was exemplary,” he said.

He addressed Cr Cox personally, saying: “It

was an outstanding tribute to you, the way you handled yourself, and the way you represented council”.

Cr Cox said it was a great honour to lead a municipality such as Yarra Ranges.

“When I think about the council today, it may sound biased, but I think it could be called the best council in the state of Victoria ... maybe even further afield,” he said.

He said the council was well-run with good staff led by CEO Glenn Patterson, and described the current council as “very bright”, intelligent, consensual and hard-working.

“That’s what you need in a council,” he said.

He also paid tribute to outgoing mayor Noel Cliff saying he had left big boots for him to fill.

He said Cr Cliff had ran the meetings fairly, giving everyone a chance to speak and had been a terrific ambassador for council.

He said he is a person who mixes easily with people.

“People genuinely love him,” he said. “He talks with people, not at people, and that really is a great skill.”

Cr Stevenson was nominated by Cr Fiona

McAllister who said she and her fellow councillors had been impressed by his dedication, desire to understand local council and his whole-of-municipality focus.

Cr Stevenson who represents Chandler Ward said he was looking forward to supporting the mayor with whom he had a very good relationship, and to working with a council he described as ‘collegiate’.

“We don’t always agree, but we do work together in a construction way,” he said.

“I have also enjoyed working with a very effective council team,” he added.

Cr Cox told the Mail his personal goals were the same as they had always been.

“It may sound corny, but my goal is to do something for the community. You can’t always do as much as you might want, but that’s it really,” he said.

He said he was looking forward to a busy year.

“I like to be doing things; like meeting people, like coming in here and working with the staff and I particularly like working with the council.

“I’m imagining it will be a busy year and I am very happy if it is.”

Police are investigating vandals who defaced a Puffing Billy railway carriage by spray painting a tag onto a historic carriage.

A historic freight carriage stored at the attraction’s Emerald Station Train Yard was sprayed with huge tags in an overnight attack.

The carriage, stored in an open train yard, accessible by surrounding streets, was defaced sometime between 5pm on 5 November and 9am the next day.

Police have scoured the area for CCTV, and investigations are ongoing.

Emerald police said the graffiti was “quite extensive and took up the whole side of the carriage”.

The total cost of the graffiti has come to around $2000 dollars.

The tag ‘MintBunra’ was spray painted across the carriage in a mixture of blue, white, purple and pink paint.

Anyone with information or who has seen any suspicious persons in the area on the night or prior to the night is urged to contact Emerald police station on 5954 0200.

Drink driving A 27-year-old Emerald male, was intercepted on Sunday 20 November by police at a random breath testing site in Monbulk.

The driver produced a positive breath reading and was issued a penalty infringement notice of $446 and 10 demerit points.

Sergeant Mick Aston at Monbulk police station said that in the lead-up to the Christmas break, police would be conducting more traffic operations in the Monbulk area and reminded drivers of their responsibility to other road users when attending events and drink driving.

Monbulk burglary Sometime between 5 - 11 November an address on Invermay Road, Monbulk, was broken into, and a small amount of items were stolen.

Anybody with information is urged to contact Yarra Ranges CIU on 9739 2300.

Property damaged Several hoses at an orchard in Silvan were damaged between 4 and 6 November.

Plastic hosing which are used to water trees were found damaged with multiple holes in them along the length of 200 metres.

Police are investigating suspects, and are continuing with inquiries.

It is believed that these types of incidents in the region previously have gone unreported, with owners choosing to fix it themselves.

Monbulk Sergeant Mick Aston said it was important that these incidents did not go unreported and urged people to always contact police if they experienced similar occurrences.

Anyone with information regarding the incidents is urged to contact Monbulk police on 9756 6266.

Lost gun safe Monbulk police are appealing for information in relation to the dumping of a gun safe on Coulson Road, Monbulk.

Police recovered the Hyskor brand gun safe on 25 October.

The safe was found to have a large hole cut out of the back and also had an electronic keypad on it.

Monbulk police have been unable to contact the owner, as there are no identifying features on the safe.

The once big backyard that my children enjoyed is turning into small townhouse courtyards.

The economy is growing, but our average wages have been static for years while the cost of living goes up and up.

Every year Victoria’s population grows roughly by 100,000 people and around 92 per cent of them make Melbourne their home. No wonder congested infrastructure is something we experience every day.

People are getting concerned; however, they

have difficulty expressing it in a wider debate.

The Australian Population Research Institute surveyed 2000 Australians and found that more than half of those feared Australia risked losing its culture and identity.

Some 54 per cent want Australia to cut its annual immigrant intake, currently at 190,000 people.

I believe we have to revisit the immigration debate; we don’t have to debate on people’s ethnicity, however, we can discuss the number we bring into this country each year.

Any future immigration policy should have to be both economically and socially beneficial for Australia.

We are a mature people; we can be trusted to discuss the merits of our immigration intake without being shouted down.

It is time again we asked ourselves, how can we make our immigration policy best work for our state and our country?

Sometimes I ask myself, is Australia and our state growing too fast?

Olinda in parkland plan

Monbulk MP James Merlino and Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio, made the announcement, which they said would give Olinda families and region the community parkland they deserve. 175254 same day the Olinda Parklands group held a rally to dispute a plan they say has been ‘rubberstamped’ without adequate community consultation.

Near Mr Merlino’s Belgrave office, the group displayed signs, expressing their disappointment over the process.

The group argues the plans have been already completed behind closed doors.

Member for Eastern Victoria Region, Ed O’Donohue, has previously lent his support to their cause, recently raising the issue in Victorian Parliament.

“This action I seek is that the minister put on hold implementation of the Olinda precinct master plan until there is further community consultation about the implementation of the (Olinda precinct) master plan,” he told Parliament.

“The beautiful Dandenong Ranges has one of the jewels in the crown in the precinct in Olinda.”

Mr O’Donohue said Parks Victoria had undertaken a process to examine the site’s best use, but questioned the consultation process.

Residents who live close to the golf course were also concerned about the plans that were unveiled on Saturday, with a map which showed

only one entrance to both the footy oval and the new precinct.

“My only major concern is the traffic ... they are a looking at having one entrance where all the playground goes in and out, the footy oval goes in and out, all the rhododendron visitors goes in and out, and this is just going to be gridlock ... throw a bushfire threat in there and it’s a bit of a problem,” a resident said.

The plans will eliminate the current entrance to the footy oval, forcing visitors to use the Olinda Precinct parking lot which will cater for the current football oval, the new parkland and also the Rhododendron Gardens.

The Victorian Government has revealed a $4.72 million commitment to developing the planned Olinda Precinct Project.

Monbulk MP James Merlino and Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio, on Saturday 18 November made the announcement, which they said would give Olinda families and region the community parkland they deserve.

Since the former Olinda Golf Club site’s closure was confirmed, the picturesque site, which sits adjacent the newly named Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden, has been the centre of much debate over its future use.

Though, the Victorian Government is adamant the project plans have been developed in close consultation with locals and will include a sports oval, nature-based play area, picnic facilities and upgraded parking.

Designs for the precinct are expected to be released early next year, with construction to start by mid-2018.

Mr Merlino said it was an exciting project for the hills.

“The community has been advocating for this site to be transformed to a public park for all types of recreation; we’ve listened and we’re getting it done,” he said.

“I look forward to bringing my own family here to kick the footy, enjoy a picnic and make the most of this beautiful setting.”

Ms D’Ambrosio said this park is destined to become the heart of the local community.

“We are thrilled to be transforming this former golf course into a beautiful space for the Olinda community to enjoy for generations to come,” she said.

The government believes the project will support the growing needs of the Olinda and hills communities, while preserving the unique character of the historical township.

As part of the Olinda Precinct Project, the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden will be extended by 6.4 hectares.

On a halloween high note

By Derek Schlennstedt Last Month’s Halloween On The Green event, organised by the Philanthropic Collective at Ferny Creek has exceeded all expectations.

Attendee results and the final tally of money raised was released on Friday 3 November, with the principals of each school coming together to receive their cheques.

The inaugural event raised an incredible $16,984 that was donated to four local schools.

Sassafras Preschool, Sassafras Primary School, Sherbrooke Community School and Ferny Creek Primary School each received $4000 from the $16,984 that was raised.

As a token of The Philanthropic Collective's gratitude and appreciation, another $500 was given as a donation to the parents who decorated the log cabin/haunted house.

Debbie Haberfield, preschool teacher said they were ‘excited’ to use the money to improve facilities around the school.

“With the funds raised we can benefit by adding to our shade sails, purchasing new balance bikes for the children’s opportunity to ride and extending our vegetable garden to extend our sustainability,” she said.

The money left over will be used by the philanthropic collective to purchase seating and chairs for the students at Sherbrooke Community School to sit on for meals.

Though organiser Andrew Fillip-Gautier said the entire event was an amazing success he remains coy on next year’s event, saying only that: “We look forward to welcoming the community back next year.”

Letters As bad as it gets Further to Marion Rice’s letter ‘Roads in ruin’ (Mail, 7 November), her points are true.

The roads in some of our areas are the worst in Victoria.

A recent drive to Walhalla and Aberfeldie were more pleasant than through some of our

I use the word thoroughfare as I live on William Road, The Patch, and every day - as a resident of 34 years - I dodge dust, potholes and motorists anxious to get to the local school or shop.

Well, may it be said that there are the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots’!

tops and service perhaps four to six vehicles per day!

While we languish waiting - despite countless petitions, meetings and expressions of disgust - as to how little we get in return for our rates.

We, too, have been told that we will be levied thousands of dollars for what is a government road.

Art with a little muscle

By Derek Schlennstedt Painting and creating art is like a muscle, the more you do it the easier it becomes.

That's the word from this year’s Sherbrooke Art Society Artist of the Year, Julie Kok, who for the last four years has devoted her life to her art.

Although an artist since she was younger, Julie said it was only when she retired four years ago that she was able to truly focus on her art.

“I retired from work four and half years ago and that’s why I’ve been doing more and that’s what has really helped me ... since then I’ve been able to use my imagination a lot more too,” she said.

“My mind's always churning over my art.”

Julie, 60 from Buxton, said it was her mother, June Cook, an artist herself who first piqued her interest in art and “after watching her sketch and paint,” said she “wanted to emulate her”.

Since then, Julie has exhibited in private collections in Australia, Finland and Holland and has taken a liking to the use of pastels.

Though having exhibited across the world, this is Julie’s first solo exhibition and she said she was excited to have been named Artist of the Year.

Unlike many other artists who focused on one aspect, Julie said she enjoyed diversifying and trying new styles, as well as changing what she painted.

“I’m very excited, I’ve been working on the paintings all year,” Julie said.

“I really wanted to go out and do landscapes but now I do a bit of both portraits as well as landscapes ... a bit of everything really, when I get sick of something I go to something else.”

“My favourite subjects are reflections and landscapes, but now I am diversifying in other areas.”

The exhibition at Sherbrooke Art Gallery is on from 11-25 November.

No Hairs Ark Chinese Rescue is preparing to host an outdoor movie night at the Cameo Cinema in Belgrave, in an effort to support their cause in helping Chinese Crested dogs in need of some tender loving care.

‘Coco Charity for Cresties at Cameo’ will be held on Friday 29 December, from 8pm to 11pm, and organisers are hoping for further support.

As the only dedicated rescue service for the breed nationally, No Hairs Ark is passionate about helping out the hairless yet “extremely loyal” breed.

Operator Laura McDonough said the service started only by chance, after she started fostering an older Chinese Crested dog.

Through word of mouth, she began receiving further requests to care for Chinese Cresteds and the service was born.

“Since our beginning, we have tailored our life to suit our charges. We have moved up to the beautiful Dandenong Ranges to give our rescues more quiet and calm, and we are continuously undertaking personal study to further expand our skills to help these dogs,” she said.

All dogs are given veterinary care, where they are de-sexed, vaccinated and micro-chipped before being re-homed.

Meanwhile, movie-goers are encouraged to arrive before 8pm to get a great spot.

Bark and Bites will be selling doggy treats for the movie, including the ever-so-perfect pup corn.

Tickets for a raffle will be available, too.

Tickets are $20 each, with food and drink packages available.

When gardening grows What better way for Year 5 schoolchildren to develop a knowledge of significant Wurundjeri plants than to plan, establish,and build an Aboriginal Plant Use Trail and then lead others through it?

The Bunjil Trail at The Patch Primary School will be launched during the 10 Year Garden Birthday celebrations on Thursday 23 November and is open to the public throughout the day.

The Patch PS school gardens were first designed by students in 2007 and construction has continued over the past 10 years.

During that time, there have been multiple state and regional school garden awards, education awards for the integrated and environmental curriculum, a passionate and dedicated parent community and a growing awareness of the importance of real-life experiences to achieve deeper learning.

To celebrate what has become the school’s ‘Learning Landscape’, a range of activities is planned for the day including Wetland Tours where Year 4 students share their STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) knowledge

and actions to improve and protect the habitat for the school’s resident colony of sugar gliders.

These include engaging with animals such as the bearded dragons, blue-tongue lizards, turtles, green tree frogs and baby chicks in the eco-centre, viewing some of the television footage of the garden project, creating some colourful scarecrows, learning about pond-life, propagating plants and sowing seeds.

The wood-fired pizza oven has cooked hundreds of delicious pizzas over the years and visitors are invited to purchase a slice or bring along a ‘rubbish-free’ picnic to enjoy in the gardens.

There will be student musical performances of our central stage in the gardens and even a student-run lemonade stand.

The school is immensely proud of the ongoing developments of our school grounds and how every child has ownership and a personal connection to them.

The Patch Primary School 10 Year Garden Birthday Celebration is open to all.

Thursday 23 November, from 9am to 5.30pm (student activities finish at 3.15pm).

Sharks’ Stallworthy in ton FTGDCA Johnson Park opened the account for the season in the nick of time, defeating Eildon Park on a day when most results were affected by a severe thunderstorm.

The Sharks were set 253 by the Panthers on week one, with Ben Stallworthy producing a memorable ton with 105, assisted by Andrew Devenish (41) to conclude at 6/256 to claim their first points of the season.

For the home team, Nathan Caton-Robertson collected 4/59 in a defiant performance for the Panthers.

Upwey held all the cards in their encounter against Belgrave.

Having already claimed first-innings points last week, the Tigers continued on before a declaration at 6/214.

Matt Mulcahy top scored with 85, while Lachlan Jansen continued on from the week before until being dismissed for 37.

With Belgrave still needing 142 runs to make Upwey bat again, the Tigers unleashed Cameron Wheeler.

Wheeler claimed 6/35 - match figures of 11/66 - to tear through the Magpies to leave them at 6/61, striking with the same frequency as the lightning and showers which eventually called the match off.

By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS Yarra Ranges Athletics welcomed the best athletes from around Victoria on Saturday to Morrison Reserve as hosts of Round 5 of AV Shield.

A warm, still start ended with a wet, stormy finish to the day but not before an Oceania Record was recorded.

It was great to see the track full with over 300 athletes, plus their supporters cheering from the outer.

The Little Athletics athletes enjoyed much better conditions for the morning athletics fun.

Once again, lots of smiles and personal bests on another fun morning of sport.

Two club records were achieved, with Brayden Woolridge setting a new best mark in the Under 15s Boys javelin and Eva Johnson set her first ever club record in the Under 9s Girls 700m race walking event.

The warm conditions made for the perfect opportunity for many athletes to set new personal bests.

Next week, Yarra Ranges athletes will be taking on the best in the Eastern Metropolitan Region for the annual Region Relay Championships.

Over 20 teams will be competing in a full day of racing on Saturday.

All teams will be vying for the chance to compete at the State Relays Championships in December.

The next round of Little Athletic athletics will be a Friday twilight competition; see you there at 5.30pm, bring a friend if you want.

The seniors travel to Frankston on Sunday for Round 6 of AV Shield.

MONBULK BOWLS All Monbulk’s Tuesday Pennant Teams enjoyed success this week Monbulk 1 had a big win against Lilydale at home 76 shots to 34.

Andrew Bell’s rink won by 15 shots 25 to 10, Peter Koomen won 19 to 14 and the biggest win of the day was Eric Markham’s rink winning 32 to 10 by 22 shots.

Monbulk 2 travelled to Chirnside Park and won by 13 shots 66 to 53. Graeme Goller’s rink had a resounding win by 18 shots 30 to 12, Dick Coppin got home by three shots and Eric Furby’s rink went down by eight shots.

Monbulk 3 had all three rinks up in a close affair at Burden Park winning by 12 shots 60 to 48. Lorraine McLaren’s rink won 21 to 15, Ray Pike won by four shots 21 to 17 and Peter Francis claimed victory by two shots 18 to 16.

This week there was no Saturday pennant as many bowlers have travelled to Shepparton for the Victorian Open.

Night Owls bowling has started on Thursdays under lights starts at 7.30pm.

This is for all level of bowlers and is a very enjoyable activity.

Volleyball grant Yarra Ranges Volleyball Club will be able to compete against the best, thanks to a $750 Victorian Government grant.

Monbulk MP James Merlino on Thursday 26 October announced the club was one of 160 successful applicants, from over 45 different sports, to share in the latest round of the Athlete Pathway Travel Grants Program. The funding for the team will help with their travel costs to Queensland to participate in the National Junior Volleyball Titles.

The workshop provides a wealth of experience in dealing with automatic transmission repairs and services and also carries out general service and tunes on all makes and models, brake inspections and repairs, air-conditioning, manual gearboxes, power steering, EFI diagnosis and injector cleaning.

JL Automatics and Manual Repairs also specialise in roadworthy certificates and tyres and all work is guaranteed.

Staff member Robert Prince has been with JL for nearly 30 years and Joshua Waterstone has been with the team for two years, providing friendly and helpful advice as well as a fresh approach to JL Automatics’ servicing.
