By Kyra Gillespie A passionate nine-year-old is giving back to “sick kids” this Christmas by giving a very special and unique gift that has been years in the making.

Abigael Donoghue is no ordinary Grade 3 student.

When she turned four years old, her mum Michelle said she set her mind to growing her hair out to make wigs for children.

When asked why she is doing it, she merely shrugs her shoulders.

“We’ve never gotten to the bottom of it, she’s just always wanted to donate her hair to sick kids”, proud mother Michelle Donoghue said.

“No-one in our immediate family has been sick, nor has she got sick relatives.

“She just has a heart of gold and wants to help others.”

Abigael has had setbacks of her own, suffering mild scoliosis and coeliac disease.

“Her spine is shaped like an ‘S’, which means that she can’t always do what the other kids can.

“But she keeps powering through, saying that there’s kids out there who are worse off than she is.”

Now that she’s nine, Abigael has decided it’s the perfect time to make the cut.

Her long strawberry-blonde hair currently measures over 80 centimetres in length, of which 35 centimetres will be cut off on Sunday 26 November, at Premiere Hair in Beaconsfield.

The hair will be donated to Hair With Heart, a children’s charity that provides wigs to kids who have lost their hair due to alopecia or another medical condition such as cancer.

Abigael thinks the wigs are important “so people can’t pick on them”.

“I just want to make them happy,” she said.

In the lead-up to the big snip, Abigael is also raising money for the Royal Children’s Hospital through a Go Fund Me page.

So far, she has raised $500 of her $2000 goal.

To help her along, her orthodontist Dr Karim from Straight Smiles has pledged to match whatever she raises.

“Why does my court case have to go in the paper?“ It’s one of the most asked questions of any publication that reports the trials and tribulations in our courts.

The immediate, obvious, and truthful answer is because court cases are inherently interesting.

But there’s more at play than that.

It’s one of the oldest principles of justice that it must not only be done - it must be seen to be done.

And the reasons for that are obvious. Yes, there’s the deterrence factor. But there’s also the aspect of public confidence in the legal system - for example, are penalties meeting community standards?

Ironically, those reading their own court stories in the paper often have a view that the media are actually in cahoots with the courts and the cops to penalise the little guy. Nothing could be further from the truth.

In fact, all those parties are watching each other ... like hawks.

And that vigilance is key to providing the kind of democracy we live in today ... where the mighty, as much as the little guy, will find their place in print.

And in defence of journalism, it’s worth making the point that we don’t shield our own - when a journalist has their day in court, the pack will turn on them as swiftly, if not more swiftly, than they would on a civilian.

Court reporting doubtless causes pain.

But there is a greater good at play.

Minister visits school site Works on Beaconhills College Pakenham’s Year 9 centre are progressing “well”.

Construction has begun on the $5.7 million specialist centre, which will feature six general purpose and two specialist classrooms, a large multipurpose area for lectures, exhibitions and meetings, designated spaces for music and audio visual production classes and landscaping when it opens in March.

And on Friday 10 November Education Minister James Merlino visited the Toomuc Valley Road campus to see how works on its new purpose-built facility were going.

Jointly funded by the school and State Government, the facility will be used by middle secondary students as part of a specialised Year 9 program, the first of its kind in Victoria.

Introduced 20 years ago, the program aims to minimise disengagement from education which typically occurs around the Year 9 aged group.

However, Headmaster Tony Sheumack said that despite the existing centre serving its purpose well, it was well past its intended lifespan.

The school secured funding for the new facility last year and during his onsite visit Mr Merlino said he was impressed by what he had seen.

“The Year 9 students at Beaconhills are part of a tight-knit community where strong friendships are forged and this centre will help students feel comfortable, accepted and connected,” Mr Merlino said.

“It is innovations such as these that deserve the funding support of government and we are only too happy to help.”

Eastern Victoria MP Daniel Mulino also praised the school’s creative initiative.

“Beaconhills is a forward-thinking successful school and this Year 9 centre is something the entire community can be proud of,” Mr Mulino said.

The new building will be ready for the start of next year’s Term 2.

Closure as works begin on community’s playground Lakeside Park’s playground will be closed as new design works begin.

The existing playground and future play space site at Lakeside Park, located on Lakeside Boulevard, Pakenham, will be closed from 20 November while works are undertaken to upgrade the space.

The park will be upgraded as per a design voted on by the local community.

Works will include the upgrade of the existing playground for younger children, a new playground targeted at older children, an exercise station between the two playgrounds and a basketball half-court.

Cardinia Shire Council’s team leader of passive reserves Kevin Alexander said the proposed basketball half-court will be located on the southern side of the gabion wall, next to the new play space as voted by the Lakeside Residents Group at its last meeting

on 18 October.

“The ‘dragon’, currently located in the existing playground, will be retained at the council depot until a survey is held in midJanuary to identify what the community would like to see happen with it,” Mr Alexander said.

He said the playground’s revamp was just one of many occurring around the shire.

“This playground upgrade is one of six playground upgrade projects identified in council’s play space strategy, which have been jointly funded by a $700,000 grant from the Victorian Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund and $200,000 under council’s playground renewal program 2017-18,” Mr Alexander said.

“This particular project at Lakeside Park is costed at $150,000.”

The playground is expected to reopen just in time for Christmas on 20 December.

Brian Oates, Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre (SMRC) chairman

What is something people don’t know about you?

I don’t know what it is that I don’t know.

What was your most memorable moment?

The birth of each of my three sons would be equal top, but the SMRC 2016 election result was rather outstanding recently.

Where were you born and what brought you to Greater Dandenong?

I was born in Weymouth in the County of Dorset in England.

It’s the home of The Tolpuddle Martyrs, Thomas Hardy, the world’s largest stone-age castle, and a Roman walled town with lots of rivers.

The threats of unemployment and devaluation and loss of property for working people in the UK and the culture of selfishness and greed in the UK in the late ‘70s made me and many others look for better places to live.

What would your last meal be?

A big English breakfast - bacon, eggs, sausages, black pudding, liver and kidneys, fried mushrooms, tomatoes and baked beans with fried bread. The cholesterol alone would finish me.

What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness?

A human’s first steps on Mars.

Why are you so passionate about the SMRC? I came as a migrant to get a better future for my family, so I can be called an economic migrant but I have yet to find anyone who came here to be worse off.

I first lived around Clayton and apart from people who had come from the same town as me - and there were quite a few - the people who were most helpful were the Greeks and

Italians.

Because of my West Country accent people didn’t think I was from England and that gave me a different outlook.

I know how hard it is to adjust and fit in, even with the benefits of language, a recognised trade and an understanding of the bureaucratic systems, and I appreciate the value that diversity of people working together can provide.

I came out of a toilet I had rushed into to find a line of impatient ladies waiting outside.

What do you wish the wider community knew/understood about migrants and refugees?

That in the vast majority of cases we are all very much the same in honestly wanting safety and security and the best future opportunities for our families.

A former Coles staff member is facing charges of misappropriating more than $74,000 from two supermarkets in the past two years.

Wendy Philp faced Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 13 November, accused of deceptively taking about $45,000 during nine bulk-charge orders at Coles Springhill supermarket in Cranbourne.

She was also accused of stealing nearly $30,000 from a Patterson Lakes outlet through bulk-charge orders and over-paying herself with unauthorised higher-duties and back-pay.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Ryan

Johnson told the court that Philp denied wrongdoing when interviewed by Coles’ head office on 14 March.

Her job was terminated the following day.

She gave largely ‘no comment’ during a police interview, Sen Const Johnson said.

Philp’s lawyer requested a sentencing adjournment for the accused’s psychological assessment.

The court heard that Philp had undergone significant trauma over the past 13 years, dealing with extreme family events which Star News has chosen not to detail.

Philp was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 2 February next year.

By Brendan Rees Balla Balla Ward's Councillor Geoff Ablett has donned the mayoral robes for the third time, after being elected as Casey Council's mayor.

Cr Ablett, who was elected to the mayoralty in 2008 and 2013, said he was humbled to lead “this great city over the next 12 months.”

“It’s such a great team to work with. Any one of our team sitting around the table tonight could be sitting where I am and that’s a really good feeling,” he told his fellow councillors at a special meeting at Bunjil Place on Monday 13 November.

“I would also like to thank the CEO and the officers and all the staff that work so hard to assist us and the residents of Casey.

I would also wish to thank the People’s Panel which was an idea of Councillor Aziz, which consists of 54 residents to help us with invaluable feedback.”

Cr Ablett also thanked the “hard-working” residents and volunteers, adding “I really want to recognise them tonight and (for them) to keep doing the goods things they are doing.”

On his priority list was to “create a much larger environmental footprint” and revegetating a large area of bushland near the wetlands in Clyde to attract more wildlife and an opportunity for people to go bushwalking.

Cr Ablett said council would also be advocating for rehabilitation centres for drug non-drug related issues. “We will be having a summit of all mental health providers to develop the best model to assist people so we cut the suicide rate.”

He said Casey would be an advocate for a $1-$3 million project in duplicating the train line from Dandenong and extending it from Cranbourne to Clyde “to cater for the huge number of houses being built and people living out that way.

“We also need better bus services and network improvements of “direct, frequent, and reliable services.”

Cr Ablett said council was in its third year of a rates cap environment and with a commitment to not pursue a rate cap variation for the 2018-'19 year.

“We need the State Government to cofund or fund more of our infrastructure so we can keep the rates capped in one of the fastest growing municipalities in Australia.”

Elected as deputy mayors for the year were Cr Amanda Stapledon and Cr Wayne Smith.

Outgoing ayor Sam Aziz congratulated Mayor Ablett, describing him as a man of integrity and who “cares deeply about of the welfare and advancement of the interests of his residents.”

“I am very confident Mr Mayor that you will lead the City of Casey with great distinction."

Cr Geoff Ablett would be the best councillor to become the next mayor of Casey. His recent statement in the Star News, see “Ablett wants mayor’s job”, shows he has the capacity to provide the leadership that’s now needed in this municipality.

As stated by Cr Geoff Ablett, Casey needs more employment opportunities and resources for creating more local jobs.

Casey could use more drug and alcohol counsellors and employment options for workers in environmental management.

A double-rail line between Dandenong and Clyde is another great idea from Geoff Ablett.

Federal and state governments also have a role to play in Casey’s future. Businesses employing unemployed people in Casey should receive tax incentives and motorists who pool their cars for commuting, to the CBD or locally, should receive free fuel or vouchers for car sharing.

Both federal and state governments have been big financial winners from massive population growth over the last 20 years.

However, they have lost sight of the need for striking a balance.

Growth has impacted the quality of life in the outer suburbs, especially in Casey. State and federal governments have to accept greater financial responsibility for compensating local councils to deal with the economic and environmental problems created by high population growth rates.

Cr Aziz indicated he would fight charges of breaching an intervention order, due to mental impairment while sending two offending text messages in May and August. Warrant out

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren South man, who claimed he couldn’t fly back to a court hearing, has been declared an “annoying individual” and had a warrant issued for his arrest.

The absent Jesse O’Connell, through his lawyer, rejected a magistrate’s sentence indication of a fine and conviction for allegedly stalking his neighbour.

The lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 13 November that O’Connell would instead contest the charges.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen asked the lawyer why “the court’s time had been wasted” by a sentence indication hearing.

“Well, I’ll issue a warrant for his arrest. He

should be here.

“Why did you go through this charade?”

Mr Vandersteen said after looking at the prosecution summaries, he couldn’t see a defence for O’Connell.

The lawyer responded that the accused thought the charges were so “minor” they would have been dropped.

“Maybe that’s why he has prior convictions for stalking,” Mr Vandersteen retorted.

The court heard two alleged stalking episodes, including O’Connell allegedly parking near the neighbour’s car in a Bunnings car park and filming the victim walking to their car.

O’Connell was listed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 23 November.

A Galaxie far away

By Cam Lucadou-Wells It takes a little while but the bold, brassy classic car starts with a roar that echoes through the Beaconsfield foothills.

It’s as well that the 302-cubic inch engine sounds so willing. The 1966 Ford Galaxie, gleaming in metallic blue, has some serious kilometres ahead of it.

Former car dealer Dave Nutter of Berwick is set to team up with Barry Pitcher, John Barker and Laurie Fenton to bash 3500 kilometres on The Outback Car Trek 2018.

In the past three years, they’ve raised $76,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

This year the team hopes to break a collective milestone of $100,000.

Despite the Galaxie being protected by a roll cage, a 140-litre fuel tank, bull bar and engine and transmission guards, it’s still an achievement to finish the gruelling TamworthAirlie Beach course.

Last year, another trek driver crashed into the team’s car leaving it shrouded in dust clouds and brought their rally to a sudden end.

That was in another 1966 Galaxie - but you could say that Galaxie is now far, far away.

Another challenge was to nurse a previous car through a stage without brakes.

They took it slowly while their support team of Flow, Nuts, Baz and Luke Pitcher radioed information about the approaching corners and hazards.

Mr Nutter looks forward to reuniting with about 100 friendly teams, with camaraderie and music around campfires.

“The Trek is not about road speed, it’s not a race,” Mr Nutter said.

“It’s about the fun.”

Besides, the rally raises major cash - more than $1 million a year for the Doctors’ airlift and bush mental health services.

A major part of the Galaxie team’s fundraising is a charity golf day at Cardinia Beaconhills Golf Links on 24 November from noon.

It includes 18 rounds of Ambrose golf, a gourmet sausage sizzle and a three-course dinner.

All of the tax-deductible donations go to the Flying Doctors. The team covers all of the trek’s

expenses, including entry costs.

Their trek is supported by Rotary Club of Berwick, RMBL Investments, Bowen’s Timber and Hardware, Timbertop Land Sales and Aim Hire.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A mighty backlog of roads and public transport upgrades are high on Casey Council’s wish-list ahead of the 2018 state election.

At the head of its “structured, targeted and resourced” lobbying campaign is a rail extension to Clyde’s rapidly-growing corridor within five years and up to $2 billion for arterial roads.

Cr Amanda Stapledon told a 9 November council meeting that state politicians needed to know that residents were “sick to death of being stuck in traffic”.

The community had spoken strongly of the need for local jobs and better transport options, she said.

“The one thing we’re true to is standing up for our residents.”

The rail upgrade comes at an estimated cost of between $1 billion and $3 billion, but serves an area growing at 1200 dwellings a month, a council report stated.

“Planning for delivery of the project must start immediately if public transport is to be established as a realistic travel mode for this emerging community.”

Casey is ranked fourth-last for per-capita public transport services, according to Monash University Public Transport Research Group research.

As for roads, Casey’s six priorities include an extension of Dandenong Bypass, Glasscocks Road and Thompsons Roads into employment areas in Dandenong South and Cardinia Road.

The council also seeks duplicated sections of Narre Warren-Cranbourne, Berwick-Cranbourne, Pound, Greaves and O’Shea roads.

It would be equivalent to a $1.8 billion package for Melbourne’s Western Suburbs recently announced by the State Government.

“Unfortunately since (the Western suburbs) announcement the State Government has been silent on when the South-East ... package would be announced,” the council report stated.

Escape from big screen A cult Hollywood rom-com is set to make its Australian stage premiere in Hallam.

Never Been Kissed - a 1999 film made famous by Drew Barrymore’s star turn - has been adapted by Hallam-based The Escapees Theatre Company.

Company director Amy Planner said the film was on her very long list of favourites.

“I thought it would be really fun.

“The characters are outrageous all the while having a little bit of drama that we could really grab on to.”

There were a few hurdles adapting the film to the theatre - not least for the cast to master

a “Chicago-esque” accent.

“We put it out there that we wanted the cast to try them and we would see how we went,” Ms Planner said.

“Everyone has truly surprised me.”

The company also delved garages, yard sales, op shops and “those junk drawers” to find 1990s phones, computers and fashions.

“It has actually been really fun stepping back just a little and remembering a decade that often gets forgotten.”

In his wallet, two snap-lock bags of meth were duly found.

Police told the court the man had been “cooperative”.

Star News observed no less than eight sandwich-boards dotted around the precinct’s community plaza declaring the smoking blitz.

Is it a case of overkill? Or a potential tripping hazard that could endanger the health of smoker and non-smoker alike?

It certainly meant a long walk for one councillor who took a puff at the outer edge of the sandwich-board zone after a 13 November meeting.

Fireys shake ‘Veranda’ win tins to help

Keep an eye out for Berwick CFA members rattling donation tins on Berwick’s main street this weekend - you could be helping save a life.

The brigade is raising funds for life-saving equipment such as a defibrillator and an oxygen resuscitation kit on a second vehicle.

It will assist the brigade attend multiple patients and other emergencies that happen at the same time, the station’s fund-raising coordinator Meg Le Miere said.

It will also help it cover its expanded response boundaries out to Beaconsfield and Narre Warren South.

“Because of the increase in events and ex-

panding boundaries, the Berwick CFA is now calling for the support of the community in helping to fund an expansion of potentially lifesaving equipment,” Ms Le Miere said.

Berwick CFA is one of three fully-volunteer brigades in the state that respond to Priority Zero medical emergencies.

It responds to about 70 incidents in which it treats an unconscious patient in medical crisis.

The station is hoping to raise about $6000 for the equipment.

Its members will be collecting donations at the corner of High Street and Clyde Road on 18 and 19 November.

Berwick indie-rock band Social on the Veranda seems to be a growing force.

Its 18-year-old talents Conor Bermingham (vocals/guitar), Ben Rohy (guitar), Brent Morrison (bass) and Jesse Porter (drums) just won a FReeZA regional final on 3 November.

They qualified with the six other best young bands in the state to play at the FReeZA grand final at St Kilda Festival in February.

Bermingham describes their music as “feelgood" with universal appeal.

Their main influence is British act Catfish and the Bottlemen.

While some of the band’s members are finishing Year 12, they also managed to launch an EP, Caught in the Chaos in October.

They were also invited to play live at Maroondah Fest on 12 November.

World Vasectomy Day on Friday 17 November is the largest male-orientated family planning event in history.

Urologist Philip McCahy said that Australian men are no stranger to the â&#x20AC;&#x153;snipâ&#x20AC;?, with the country boasting the second highest rate of vasectomy in the world with more than 30,000 procedures performed each year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Vasectomy is the most effective, safest form of contraception and can be quickly performed with a local anaesthetic in many clinics throughout the country,â&#x20AC;? Unfinished business

By Russell Bennett Unfinished business - that’s what it comes down to for Brent Russell’s Pakenham Warriors senior men’s side for the next Big V basketball season.

The Warriors reached this year’s Division 2 grand final series before losing to a hungry Collingwood All-Stars outfit in two games in the best-of-three contest.

Last year’s Pakenham team built its name on teamwork, togetherness and selflessness and for 2018 that’s only going to be magnified.

“We only want a team award and the only team award we’re after is a championship,” Russell said simply.

“That’s our motivation.

“To have individual accolades is great, but all the guys are looking for is team success.”

The vast majority of the Warriors’ line-up this year will return for the next campaign, along with some significant inclusions.

Star forward Hayden Davey returns to the Pakenham Big V fold after a 12-month absence and is sure to provide a massive boost to skipper Ben Gaze.

Versatile big man Ash Szalek has also joined the fold - coming across from the Casey Cavaliers to once again play alongside his brother, Brad.

His experience, leadership and team-first mentality is sure to be a massive boost to the Warriors system.

Lewis Newman and Tobie Dean will make the step up into the Warriors senior team after graduating from its youth men’s program, while Jordan Jacotine will also don the Pakenham colours.

James Topp, Tyler Hogg, Cody Fredrickson and Nick Ross are the notable outs from

the 2017 season - along with former assistant coach Michael Battle.

Russell said one of the strengths of this year’s lineup will once again be its versatility.

“The plan is to cover every match-up you’ll get in basketball - whether that’s big or small, quick or slow, defensive or offensive,” he said.

“This year I feel we cover everything, whereas last year there were maybe a few gaps in a few places. This year, looking at the rotation, we’ve got versatility from one through to five (point guard to center).”

Though the 2017 playing group was a particularly tightknit one, Russell said the 2018 version will be even more so.

“I think Pakenham is a club to watch out for over the next couple of years, both at a junior and senior level,” he added.

“I feel last year’s success for all the teams was huge and something we can keep building from.

“We’ve got that long-term goal of State Championship (division) and we want to get there.

“We’re putting the headline on this coming season as ‘unfinished business’.

“It’ll really show our character and who we are when it comes to how we approach the season after going so close last year.”

The 2018 Pakenham Warriors Big V senior men’s team includes: Brad Bridgewater, Josh Bjelan, Lewis Newman, Ash Szalek, Brad Szalek, Hayden Davey, Ben Gaze, Mike Godfrey, Craig Drew, Tobie Dean, Rob Maartens, Trent Lee, and Jordan Jacotine. Logan Mills, Mitch Barry and Matt Tielen have also been named as development players.

The $250,000 Sportsbet Pakenham Cup (2500m) has been targeted by prominent Cranbourne trainer Mick Kent after his sixyear-old Oncidium Ruler won impressively at Flemington on Saturday.

The Strategic-Princess Regina gelding overcame a poor first-up run at Caulfield, gaining a late split to win the $120,000 Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Plate (2000m).

Oncidium Ruler will now hit the lucrative country cups circuit, heading to the Ballarat Cup (2200m) on Saturday 25 November before backing up at Racing.com Park for the listed feature a fortnight later.

While the Ballarat Cup is enticing, Kent believes the wide expanses of the 2400-metre track at Pakenham will suit his steed right down to the ground.

“The race that will really suit is the Pakenham Cup which is two weeks after Ballarat," Kent said.

“It’s 2500 (metres) on a beautiful big sweeping track which would suit him right down to the ground."

Meanwhile, local trainers had a field day on Oaks Day at Racing.com Park with all seven winners being prepared at Cranbourne, Mornington or Pakenham.

Cranbourne trainer Cindy Alderson trained a double, while Rob Blacker gave the Mornington faithful a lift by training a mid-meeting double, with Elephant Rock and For a Song both saluting under the guidance of apprentice jockey Liam Riordan.

Pakenham trainer and PRC committeeman Michael Phillips saddled Chevy’s Star to victory in the second race on the card, while fellow local trainer Tim Hughes applied the finish touches to One Hot Dane - the winner of the third.

Pakenham race again this Thursday night, 16 November for the Evergreen Turf Charity Night, before the build-up begins for cup day on Saturday 9 December.

His magnificent century

By Russell Bennett A magnificent century from Cardinia captaincoach Alex Nooy (103 not out) was the undisputed highlight of round five of the WGCA Premier Division on Saturday.

Nooy’s Bulls had rolled Emerald for just 82 on day one of their contest at Chandler Reserve last week and declared overnight on 6/176.

But the Bombers put up an improved showing in their second innings, scoring an even 200 to set the Bulls 107 runs, in 22 overs, to claim outright victory.

Nooy led the charge superbly, producing a stunning innings that included 10 sixes and nine fours to lead his side to victory. The Bulls, well they completed their task in just 8.2 overs of sheer mayhem, ending with their score at 1/109.

Nooy’s spectacular square of the wicket stroke play was the highlight of an innings that he knows he’ll never replicate.

“I wasn’t really looking at the fielders - I was just hitting it,” Nooy said.

“I just saw it and hit it. I got a few away and got to 20-odd and thought to myself ‘I’m not going to stop now - I might as well keep going’.”

The Bulls now sit sixth, but just four premiership points behind third-placed Upper Beaconsfield.

Despite Nooy’s heroics, almost all of the attention in round five centred on Clyde’s clash with Pakenham and just how the Lions would fare chasing the Cougars’ tricky 206-run total.

Pakenham was yet to hit peak form and was facing a Cougars side looming as a likely finals threat in its own right.

But after losing Daniel Vela early on day two at 1/8, Nic Close (27) and Chris Smith steadied.

When he’s in the kind of form he displayed for most of the day on Saturday, it seems there’s no part of the ground he can’t score in.

Arguably the best batsman to watch in the

competition, Smith gave a real batting masterclass - first with Chaplin (34) and then with skipper Dom Paynter (23) before both were trapped in front leg-before by John Simpson and Pat Lawson respectively.

Smith’s stand with Chaplin, in particular, essentially took the game away from the Cougars. After 30 overs, the visitors required less than two runs an over to secure first innings points.

Though Chaplin fell in the first over after

tea, he and Smith had refused to let the Cougars’ bowlers dictate to them through their stand - rotating the strike consistently and punishing anything too short or overpitched.

Paynter continued right where Chaplin left off and was aggressive right from the outset.

Though he fell soon after making his start at 4/167 and Smith (90) just short of a richly-deserved ton at 5/193, the contest was done and dusted.

But the Lions still had a point to prove - that they could bat out their overs against a quality attack.

Jack Anning (38 not out) and Jason Williams (56 not out) used the remaining overs to gain some invaluable form in the middle, and both made the most of their opportunity as the Lions ultimately closed out the day on 7/296.

Both batsmen displayed the kind of impressive stroke-play that the Lions may just need from the middle and lower order come the business end of the season.

Lawson led the way with the ball for the Cougars, taking 4/78 while Damasara Menuwara was the other multiple wicket-taker with 2/56.

Tooradin was chasing outright points of its own at home against finals aspirants the Maroons and declared immediately after passing Upper Beaconsfield’s (103) first innings total at 6/104 with opener Tom Hussey (40) topscoring.

But Bathiya Perera’s side made much better going of its second innings, reaching 5/141 from 40 overs with Imesh Jayasekara (59 not out) scoring his third half-century of the season to date. Cal O’Hare (2/38) and Brayden Browne (2/14) finished with two scalps apiece.

In the other clash of Round 5 - played over Saturday 4, Sunday 5 November - Kooweerup claimed its second straight outright victory by demolishing Merinda Park at Denhams Road, 97 and 85 to 1/132 (dec) and 1/52.
