From the highs of opening Bunjil Place last month, Sam Aziz spent his final day as mayor in court. 174279 Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said a nonconviction may not be “within grounds“ for the third offence. Cr Aziz was described by his lawyer as suffering from mental and physical health issues, including depression, high blood pressure, heart problems and diabetes. He unsuccessfully sought an interim media suppression order at the hearing, arguing that
coverage would affect him in his political role. Mr Vandersteen said the case seemed to be a “standard matter“ that fronted court on a daily basis. “What distinguishes it from any other case? “It’s his profile that’s the issue and (the impact on) his mental health.“ Mr Vandersteen said on reading a psychological report on Cr Aziz, there were no “major

psychological disturbances“. “You say there’s a psychological report that goes to that issue (of mental impairment) and there’s nothing here,“ he told the defence lawyer. The lawyer said the psychologist would be called to give expert evidence to the court. Cr Aziz was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 1 December.

Casey’s outgoing mayor Sam Aziz’s career is at the crossroads if he’s convicted on two charges of breaching an intervention order, his lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 13 November. Cr Aziz indicated he would fight the charges due to mental impairment while sending the two offending text messages in May and August. He did not contest the facts of the case, his lawyer told the court. His lawyer made specific reference to Cr Aziz allegedly telling police on 25 May he couldn’t recall sending the text earlier that day. She described the texts as “somewhat of a rant“. “Do you understand what happens when a phoenix rises from the ashes?“ he allegedly stated in the first text. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Ryan Johnson told the court that police attending Aziz’s home on 25 May described him as “visibly upset“ and unable to be interviewed due to his mental distress. After the second text, Cr Aziz allegedly told police he thought he complied with the order, Sen Const Johnson said. The three-time mayor apologised to police, telling them he wished he had read the order in full, the court heard. If he had, he wouldn’t have sent the text, he allegedly told the police. Cr Aziz, recently awarded the title of Casey’s first emeritus mayor, was due to hand over the mayoral chains on the night following the court appearance. He had been known for a strident hard-line approach to law-and-order issues, famously declaring that Casey was a “city in distress“ and moving for the city’s flag to be flown at half-mast. The court heard that it was the third time that Aziz had faced similar intervention orderrelated charges. The first case was dismissed, the second case resulted in no conviction, the court was told. The defence lawyer said that a conviction “would have a shattering impact on (Cr Aziz’s) future“.

“Why does my court case have to go in the paper?“ It’s one of the most asked questions of any publication that reports the trials and tribulations in our courts. The immediate, obvious, and truthful answer is because court cases are inherently interesting. But there’s more at play than that. It’s one of the oldest principles of justice that it must not only be done - it must be seen to be done. And the reasons for that are obvious. Yes, there’s the deterrence factor. But there’s also the aspect of public confidence in the legal system - for example, are penalties meeting community standards? Ironically, those reading their own court stories in the paper often have a view that the media are actually in cahoots with the courts and the cops to penalise the little guy. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, all those parties are watching each other ... like hawks. And that vigilance is key to providing the kind of democracy we live in today ... where the mighty, as much as the little guy, will find their place in print. And in defence of journalism, it’s worth making the point that we don’t shield our own - when a journalist has their day in court, the pack will turn on them as swiftly, if not more swiftly, than they would on a civilian. Court reporting doubtless causes pain. But there is a greater good at play. Jason Beck

Dog was ‘torn to pieces’ By Brendan Rees A man has told how he watched his pet chihuahua helplessly die after it was “torn to pieces” after allegedly being attacked by a mastiff cross labrador. The Cranbourne man said the dog continued its savage attack even after neighbours hit it several times with the handle of an axe. Residents of Dearing Avenue said they lived in fear of the dog and that the council had known it was a danger for more than a year. Ashley O’Brien was walking his 10-monthold chihuahua on Dearing Avenue, Cranbourne, about 5.45pm on Tuesday 31 October when he and his dog were attacked. He said the other dog bit him on the arms as he was holding his dog. “He grabbed hold of my dog and wouldn’t let go,” adding “it tore him to pieces like a crocodile”. Mr O’Brien said he “barely got to three houses” when the other dog spotted him walking his dog from across the road. “It was on its four legs shaking it, just wouldn’t let go, clamped down, never seen anything like it before.” He described the dog has having “psycho eyes” and thought his dog was “gone for sure.” The 41-year-old truck driver said he tried to hang onto his dog, but the pain from the dog's jaws was unbearable. A neighbour named Greg, who wished not to reveal his surname, said he was in his backyard when he heard someone yelling for help. “It was literally on our nature strip so I jumped on top of him, not thinking that I could’ve been bitten too. It had hold of the dog and that’s all it wanted.” Mr O’Brien said he was scared during the ordeal. “As soon as my neighbours heard me shout ‘help’ four of them came out and starting punching and kicking the dog.”
Ashley O'Brien cannot work for a couple of weeks after suffering large cuts to his hands, which required stitches. 175075 He said one of the neighbours also used a garden hose to squirt water down the dog’s mouth, before someone brought out an axe and starting hitting it on the head with the handle. “The third time it let go ... dazed for about 10 seconds and went back to the house.” “I just stood back because I was just in shock. I was pouring out blood.” Greg said: “We got it off it but it was all too late.” “It took a few good hits to the head, and when it let go of the other dog it just went home. The little dog was just prey to it,” he said. Mr O’Brien said one of the neighbours took his dog to the vet while he was checked by ambulance. He said he was later distraught to watch his dog die after waiting in the vet clinic for more than an hour. “They put him down. They put him on the
oxygen and stuff like that but he started bleeding through the mouth.” Grieving the loss of his friend, he described his chihuahua as “great company.” “You can understand old age but you can’t understand that.” Greg, who believed the dog was a pit bull, said the attack was a “shame”. “If they (council) had done something about this 12 to 18 months ago, it wouldn’t have come to this.” Another neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said the attacking dog had “quite an aggressive nature” with a history of jumping fences. “We were always frightened. We were always intimidated,” she said. Mr O'Brien said he would like to see the mastiff cross labrador “off the street.” He said it was lucky a child was not harmed: “It could’ve been a kid. It was Halloween too, so there were kids walking around the street.” “I wouldn’t want to see it again either, it was horrible.” He said he would be off work for two weeks after receiving eight stiches in his right hand, one stitch in his left hand and a crushed fingernail. He said the ranger told him the dog, which was surrendered by the owners to Casey Council last week, would not be “re-homed”. Casey Council Manager for Safer Communities Caroline Bell said no further comment would be made on incident, which was reported to council. Ms Bell said between 1 October 2016 and 31 August 2017, council received 215 reports of dog attacks, with 150 on animals and 65 on people. She said the majority these were classed as minor. “There have been cases of serious injuries

It’s Mayor Ablett, again - third time lucky Balla Balla Ward's Councillor Geoff Ablett has donned the mayoral robes for the third time, after being elected as Casey Council's mayor. Cr Ablett, who was elected to the mayoralty in 2008 and 2013, said he was humbled to lead “this great city over the next 12 months.” “It’s such a great team to work with. Any one of our team sitting around the table tonight could be sitting where I am and that’s a really good feeling,” he told his fellow councillors at a special meeting at Bunjil Place on Monday 13 November. “I would also like to thank the CEO and the officers and all the staff that work so hard to assist us and the residents of Casey. I would also wish to thank the People’s Panel which was an idea of Councillor Aziz, which consists of 54 residents to help us with invaluable feedback.” Cr Ablett also thanked the “hard-working” residents and volunteers, adding “I really want
to recognise them tonight and (for them) to keep doing the goods things they are doing.” On his priority list was to “create a much larger environmental footprint” and revegetating a large area of bushland near the wetlands in Clyde to attract more wildlife and an opportunity for people to go bushwalking. Cr Ablett said council would also be advocating for rehabilitation centres for drug nondrug related issues. “We will be having a summit of all mental health providers to develop the best model to assist people so we cut the suicide rate.” He said Casey would be an advocate for a $1-$3 million project in duplicating the train line from Dandenong and extending it from Cranbourne to Clyde “to cater for the huge number of houses being built and people living out that way. “We also need better bus services and network improvements of “direct, frequent, and reliable services.”

Cr Ablett said council was in its third year of a rates cap environment and with a commitment to not pursue a rate cap variation for the 2018-'19 year. “We need the State Government to co-fund or fund more of our infrastructure so we can keep the rates capped in one of the fastest growing municipalities in Australia.” Elected as deputy mayors for the year were Cr Amanda Stapledon and Cr Wayne Smith. Outgoing ayor Sam Aziz congratulated Mayor Ablett, describing him as a man of integrity and who “cares deeply about of the welfare and advancement of the interests of his residents.” “I am very confident Mr Mayor that you will lead the City of Casey with great distinction."

School camp in Vietnam By Brendan Rees School camp just got better for a group of Cranbourne Secondary College students as they prepare to travel abroad. Ten students will embark on a three-week trip to Vietnam to explore the culture and help build a fence at a local primary school in a remote village. Students have been fund-raising for their expedition, and helping them along the way was Masonic Lodge, who presented a $1000 donation cheque at Cranbourne Secondary College on Thursday 19 October. Japara Healthcare also donated $500 towards their expedition community project. Cranbourne Secondary College Sports coordinator Kellie Fallon said Vietnam was chosen for the expedition based on cost, travel distance and the community project available. “Students wanted to get into a local school to help in construction and teaching in the classroom. Vietnam had the perfect project,” Ms Fallon said. She said the fence, to be built at a remote village over five days, would stop local children running onto the road. She added students would also assist in building a small playground for the kids, who currently played on a mound of dirt. “The expedition is the culmination of 20 months of planning, preparing and fundraising. On top of the individual student cost of $6000, the 10 students have also fund-raised $2100 to pay for the community project.” “The expedition team is super appreciative of all donations received. This is the second expedition the college has completed, the previous being in 2015 to Thailand and Laos,” Ms Fallon said. “An assembly outlining the expedition was held, students nominated their interest, the college approved students, a parent information night was held for those students who had

They will also visit temples, war tunnels, local markets, and the Mekong Delta, among other tourist attractions. Students will be joined by Ms Fallon and another teacher Stephanie O’Kane for their expedition, where they will head to Vietnam on November 25.
“The students are a tad nervous but mostly super excited. We’ve had the 2015 expedition students come in and speak, and hearing their stories, the life skills they developed and personal growth they experienced, the students cannot wait to get over to Vietnam and let the experience begin,” Ms Fallon said.

$15m Clyde police pledge By Brendan Rees A $15 million Clyde North Police Station would be built under the State Coalition if they win government in the state election next year. Opposition leader Matthew Guy joined Shadow Minister for Police Edward O’Donohue, Member for Bass Brian Paynter and Liberal candidate for Cranbourne AnnMarie Hermans in making the announcement at Clyde Recreation Reserve on Thursday 9 November. Mr Guy said one in 19 homes in Clyde North was burgled in 2016, adding: “We say enough is enough.” “Crime in Clyde North is up by more than 90 per cent since the election of this government.” “While Daniel Andrews cuts and closes police stations, only the Liberal-Nationals will invest in a new station at Clyde North.” Mr Guy said the new station would relieve pressure on Cranbourne and surrounding stations, as Casey’s population was expected to match Tasmania in 22 years’ time. “It’s one of the fastest growing areas in Australia. So to ignore it is to ignore the problem.” “This government has closed more police stations, it has reduced the hours of more police stations than any government for the last two decades in this state, and all that at a time when Victoria is going through a crime wave.” My Paynter said the crime rate needed to be addressed “head on” with more police stations built. “If we are to really accommodate and encourage people into new areas we need to build the infrastructure.” He said it was important that a police station be built in Clyde North to make people “feel safe and secure in their own homes.” Liberal candidate for Cranbourne AnnMarie Hermans said a safer community was
also needed. “It’s very important that we can actually build a station so that we don’t have our Cranbourne police in a state where they are actually not able to cope with the increase in population.” Casey Neighbourhood chairman Watch Rob Ward welcomed the announcement for a Clyde North police station. “We don’t care who builds the station, we need one. We are getting daily, weekly inquiries from residents in this area concerned about their safety.” “People are afraid in their own homes.” Also at the announcement was Clyde North resident Anuj Haribhakti who started a community Facebook page called Circa 1886 Estate Residents, Clyde North said: “Literally every week there is a burglary in our estate. “We use Neighbourhood Watch guidelines to try to scare the burglars off.” A statement from Victoria Police said: “There is no forward planning by Victoria Police to build a new police station at Clyde. “The Chief Commissioner has acknowledged that growth corridors are a priority, of which Casey is one. When the new resources are supplied to communities across the state, we will have them on the road detecting crime and keeping people safe rather than sitting at police stations,” the statement said. Acting Minister for Police James Merlino said the State Government would provide Victoria Police the powers and resources they needed to keep Victorians safe. “That’s why we’re recruiting 3135 additional police to be deployed across the state but especially where the population is growing, including the south-eastern areas of Melbourne like Clyde.“

Brian Oates, Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre (SMRC) chairman
What is something people don’t know about you? I don’t know what it is that I don’t know. What was your most memorable moment? The birth of each of my three sons would be equal top, but the SMRC 2016 election result was rather outstanding recently. Where were you born and what brought you to Greater Dandenong? I was born in Weymouth in the County of Dorset in England. It’s the home of The Tolpuddle Martyrs, Thomas Hardy, the world’s largest stone-age castle, and a Roman walled town with lots of rivers. The threats of unemployment and devaluation and loss of property for working people in the UK and the culture of selfishness and greed in the UK in the late ‘70s made me and many others look for better places to live. What would your last meal be? A big English breakfast - bacon, eggs, sausages, black pudding, liver and kidneys, fried mushrooms, tomatoes and baked beans with fried bread. The cholesterol alone would finish me. What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness? A human’s first steps on Mars.

I came out of a toilet I had rushed into to find a line of impatient ladies waiting outside. What do you wish the wider community knew/understood about migrants and refugees? That in the vast majority of cases we are all very much the same in honestly wanting safety and security and the best future opportunities for our families.

Why are you so passionate about the SMRC? I came as a migrant to get a better future for my family, so I can be called an economic migrant but I have yet to find anyone who came here to be worse off. I first lived around Clayton and apart from people who had come from the same town as me - and there were quite a few - the people who were most helpful were the Greeks and
Italians. Because of my West Country accent people didn’t think I was from England and that gave me a different outlook. I know how hard it is to adjust and fit in, even with the benefits of language, a recognised trade and an understanding of the bureaucratic systems, and I appreciate the value that diversity of people working together can provide.

‘Tiger’ land By Brendan Rees A Frankston East man says he may have sighted a Tasmanian tiger at a local sighting hotspot. Bernie Sampson said was walking along Centre Break at the Fauna and Flora Reserve in Langwarrin South at about 11am one morning in late September, when the supposedly extinct creature “came from the right-hand side of the path.” “I had walked about 150 metres and about 50 metres back towards me I saw this - it wasn’t a dog or a fox. All I saw was black. “I would say I was at least 200 metres from it.” He said the animal ran across from the Long Crescent South to the Long Crescent North side within two seconds. “It was obviously chasing a rabbit or something, a prey, and in a couple of seconds it jumped from the right-hand side where all the bushes are across the path to the left-hand side.” “It reminded me of a film of cheetahs in the way it raced.” Mr Sampson said it was the first time in 25 years of walking in the reserve that he had seen the animal - which is the third apparent public sighting in the past two months. He admits he wasn’t wearing his glasses at the time, adding the animal was “much bigger than a dog. All I could see was black because it was over in a quick time.” Asked if it the creature had distinguishable features, he said “No, I can’t to be honest, adding “I haven’t seen it before.” Thylacine hunter Michael Moss said it was possible the Tasmanian tiger was on the prowl. He said the fact that Mr Sampson had been walking in the reserve for 25 years and “seen nothing until this happens is an amazing coincidence.” “There are two witnesses in that park around that time who claim to have seen something that they haven’t seen before.”
Timber fire at tip By Brendan Rees and Cam Lacadou-Wells Residents have called for the Hampton Park tip's closure, after fire crews responded to a blaze there on Saturday 11 November. At about 4.40pm Hampton Park and Hallam fire brigades were called to a timber fire that was “well alight” in a bunker at the Suez Recycling and Recovery Centre on Hallam Road. Hallam Fire Station Senior Station Officer Greg Chapman said crews tried to stop the fire from spreading to other sections of the plant but a lack of water “hampered the initial strategy.” He said six 3000-litre tankers and additional pumpers were also called. He said the tankers shuttled water from Hallam Road to the pumpers until a large diameter hose was set up from a hydrant on Hallam Road. Mr Chapman said spot fires occurred on the site, with a wind change putting “heavy smoke” over Hampton Park. “It remained in free burn within the bunker for another hour. We then had to extinguish a very hot fire for the next few hours.” He said three pumpers, seven tankers, a Scorseby Hoselayer,and an on-site 30,000-litre on-site tanker helped contained the fire within an hour. “Special thanks to people on-site in helping us with access and co-operation in dealing with the job,” he said. CFA Operations Officer for Casey Don Wilkie said: “The cause is unknown but not suspicious.” He said the centre noticed smoke just as they were closing the gate to go home. “There wasn’t like toxic, hazardous, dangerous smoke in there but there was smoke going over the Hampton Park community.” “There’s always a concern with smoke. We put out a community warning for the residents

In September, Suez Recycling and Recovery was fined nearly $8000 by the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) for the escape of odour outside its landfill boundaries. The tip has been the subject of three Pollution Abatement Notices in the past two years and an EPA enforcement action in 2012. Suez has a planning permit from Casey Council to operate the tip until 2040. Vanassa Gerdes of Hampton Park Progress Association said: “It’s high time to close the tip. “At the end of the day, it’s in a built-up community residential area - it’s time to close.“ She said residents couldn’t be sure what was released in the fire’s smoke on 11 November.
“Do you really know what’s been dumped in that tip? Do people always do the right thing?“ As for appropriate sanctions, Ms Gerdes said: “Maybe it’s time for them to get another fine and give Hampton Park $500,000.“ EPA Southern Metro Manager Marleen Mathias said EPA officers attended the fire and observed smoke and some firewater run-off from the site. “EPA officers provided advice on firewater containment and clean-up of the site.” “EPA was not requested by the incident controller, in this case MFB, to undertake air monitoring.” Ms Mathias said the site was not licensed by the EPA but the EPA would regularly inspect the transfer station and raise any issues with the Victorian Government’s Resource Recovery Facilities Audit Taskforce, which has assessed the site as being low-risk. 12371462-LB46-17

Cr Geoff Ablett would be the best councillor to become the next mayor of Casey. His recent statement in the Star News, see “Ablett wants mayor’s job”, shows he has the capacity to provide the leadership that’s now needed in this municipality. As stated by Cr Geoff Ablett, Casey needs more employment opportunities and resources for creating more local jobs. Casey could use more drug and alcohol counsellors and employment options for workers in environmental management. A double-rail line between Dandenong and Clyde is another great idea from Geoff Ablett. Federal and state governments also have a role to play in Casey’s future. Businesses employing unemployed people in Casey should receive tax incentives and motorists who pool their cars for commuting, to the CBD or locally, should receive free fuel or vouchers for car sharing. Both federal and state governments have been big financial winners from massive population growth over the last 20 years. However, they have lost sight of the need for striking a balance. Growth has impacted the quality of life in the outer suburbs, especially in Casey. State and federal governments have to accept greater financial responsibility for compensating local councils to deal with the economic and environmental problems created by high population growth rates. A new $5.6 million kindergarten and community hub in Botanic Ridge is in City of Casey Council’s sights. As growing pressure mounts from families for kindergarten access, particularly at Pearcedale Kindergarten where there was a long waiting list for children, Casey Council is committed to building a new kindergarten as soon as “land becomes available” in Botanic Ridge. Cr Geoff Ablett said a new kindergarten would be “fantastic” and based on a similar model to the Elyburn Family and Community Centre in Cranbourne East, on which construction is due to be completed by March next year. “If we get land then we can fast-track everything - we can bring that forward in the budget and get it built.” He said a kindergarten was “desperately needed” to help young families, adding the Pearcedale Kindergarten was “chock-a-block” with the number of families expressing interest for enrolment in 2018 greater than the number of places available. “The whole idea is to take pressure off the Pearcedale Kinder because you’ve got kids who are born there who can’t get in.” Cr Ablett said council would provide a Botanic Ridge Interim Kindergarten on the property of Devon Meadows Primary School at Worthing Road, Devon Meadows. He said the interim kindergarten would be available from term two, 2018 to “ease the burden” and hopefully free up places at Pearcedale Kindergarten. “So that children are provided with a full year of kindergarten, term one will operate from Fairhaven Kindergarten at Fairhaven Boulevard in Cranbourne West.” The Botanic Ridge Interim Kindergarten would provide an additional 45 places for chil-

Volunteers under fire By Brendan Rees Hampton Park fire brigade has fallen short of hitting response time targets as data for Victoria’s fire services was released for the first time. Country Fire Authority statistics showed Hampton Park, a fully volunteer-run station, responded to just six per cent of incidents within the authority’s standard eight-minute target period. That compared to Cranbourne which responded to 96 per cent of incidents within eight minutes, followed closely Narre Warren by which registered a 74 per cent response rate. Cranbourne brigade is supported by career firefighters whereas Narre Warren is a volunteer-run brigade. Data also showed Hampton Park brigade took 16.11 minutes to respond to 90 per cent of emergency incidents within their own brigade area and met the standard response target of eight minutes on only two occasions. Hampton Park brigade first lieutenant Chris Gomolis said the station’s challenging location was a reason why the brigade was slow to respond between 1 April and 30 June. “There are many factors that contribute to it all. The biggest one at the moment which has been highlighted is where our station is not the most ideal location. “With the evolving of Hampton Park and Lynbrook, and Lyndhurst, the station is simply surrounded by 40 kilometre zones, and traffic lights everywhere,” Mr Gomolis said. “That’s pretty much the cause of our members’ delay to get to the station quick enough.” Mr Gomolis said the issue was raised sev-
eral times, adding “I believe options are being explored”. The data also showed other brigades in the area responded to Hampton Park callouts only 63 per cent of the time within the standard eight minute period. Minister for Emergency Services James Merlino said the release of the data was an important step for public accountability because community safety was “our first priority”. “Unlike the Liberals, we believe the public have the right to know the response times of our emergency services - whether they are firefighters or paramedics,” he said. He said the figures provided further evidence that reform of the fire services was needed, as Victoria continued to grow. “That’s why we’re doing just that, as well as giving volunteers more funding, more support and more independence.” Shadow Minister for Emergency Services Brad Battin said Daniel Andrews and James Merlino continued their “war on volunteers” by releasing misleading figures comparing career stations to volunteer stations. “The Labor government’s decision to hide figures that do not support their political outcomes is a disgrace,” he said. “The Liberal Party are committed to community safety as the key to all our policies in the fire services, and that is why Matthew Guy and I will deliver a Royal Commission that can make independent recommendations to the government for a fire service that best protects all Victorians, not like Daniel Andrews reform based on political pay back to the union who supported his election.”
Is she on the run? Cr Serey also seemed to confirm strong rumours she was running for the 2018 state election. At a 9 November council meeting, Casey councillors voted on a campaign to lobby state political parties for better roads and public transport ahead of the election. All councillors except Cr Serey - who declared a conflict of interest and left the room. It seems that the Liberal Party may have decided upon its candidate for the Narre Warren South seat in 2018.

The man, freshly out of jail, was pulled over by police for riding a bike without a helmet and while using a mobile phone. In a moment of frankness, he revealed he had used ice the night before - which prompted police to undertake a personal search. In his wallet, two snap-lock bags of meth were duly found. Police told the court the man had been “cooperative”.

Words from the frontline A timeless exhibition, tracing the wartime accounts of seven Victorians who served in WWI has been officially launched at Cranbourne Library. “Writing the War: personal stories from WWI“ tells the story of Australia’s involvement in WWI through the eyes of seven ordinary Australians through their letters, diaries, published writing and photographs. Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne said he was honoured to launch the special touring exhibition from the State Library on Thursday 9 November. “I can’t think of a better way than this exhibition to remind our young people in this area of what it was like to be a person at that time and this personal touch I think really means a lot. It meant a lot to me.”
“This is a great honour of sacrifice that was made by young servicemen of the First World War and to have these letters here as part of the exhibition in front of us, it turns these people into real fresh and blood people.” Mr Byrne said attendees would gain a personal understanding of the war experience which commemorated the centenary of World War I. “We encourage as many people as we possibly can just to come and see this exhibition, just to appreciate it and honour the sacrifice they made.” “So congratulations to the Casey Cardinia Library Corporation for bringing this.” Keynote speaker at the launch was Lambis Englezos AM, a Greek-born Australian teacher responsible for discovering mass war graves of some 250 lost Australian soldiers in the disastrous Battle of Fromelles in 1916. Look at our Dusty! By Brendan Rees Felicity Smeets is certainly one to stay true to her word. The die-hard Richmond fan recently underwent the ‘Dusty’ buzz cut to raise funds for Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Ms Smeets, of Cranbourne East said she agreed to undergo the clippers after posting a comment on her Facebook page on August 30 that “If Dustin Martin signed on with Richmond, and he got an All-Australian, got the Brownlow Medal and won the Grand Final, I would shave my head like his.” She recalled being particularly nervous halfway through the Grand Final when Richmond had a surging lead: “I thought ‘Oh wow, I’m getting a haircut’.” And to her surprise, all four boxes were ticked as outlined on her Facebook post.
Ms Smeets made the trip to her Zenity Hair Salon in Cranbourne East on Wednesday 1 November, with good friend and hairdresser Amy Doyle doing the honours of cutting her locks. “I didn’t expect us to win the Grand Final but we did, and so true to my word all my friends were like ‘Yes you’ve got to do it’ and my kids are like ‘No you’re not’ but yes I did.” “It’s very cold after having hair halfway down my back. It’s the longest my hair has been in 39 years.” She said she met five year-old Mini Dustin Martin look-alike at the Grand Final, saying she would shave her head like Dusty. “He said ‘You’re a brave mummy you are.’” Ms Smeets is using social media to get more donations for MND. She initially aimed to raise up to $500, but says this could now reach nearly $3000, adding: “There’s going to be a fair bit of money
The City of Casey is calling on the State Government to take urgent action to review Cranbourne’s bus network. Council resolved to write to the Minister for Transport Jacinta Allan requesting Public Transport Victoria (PTV) to include more of Cranbourne’s bus services in its 12-month review after four new bus services were added and another 12 routes were realigned to connect residents to trains in November 2016. Mayfield Ward Cr Amanda Stapledon, who spoke to the motion at a council meeting held on Thursday 9 November urged the State Government that the review should be extended to Route 792 (Cranbourne Station to Pearcedale), the removal of a bus stop and shed at Rochester Parade in Cranbourne East, and route 893 (Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre to Dandenong Station). Also added to the motion was that PTV be encouraged in the “strongest possible terms” to conduct a public meeting they promised residents affected by bus route 792. Mayor Geoff Ablett said PTV’s “lacklustre“ consultation with residents and the way they implemented new bus routes “leaves a lot to be desired". He raised the motion because PTV said that route 792 would not be included in a review of bus infrastructure despite PTV promising in a public meeting to consult on the route’s problems. “If you promise someone something you should deliver it." “The review was pretty much what they decided,“ he said. Cr Ablett referred to a female constituent who had to stop work due to the stress of the bus stop being placed in front of her house. PTV held a two-week consultation period online on 16-29 October but Cr Wayne Smith
said Lynbrook residents claim they couldn’t log onto the survey. Cr Stapledon said the PTV “did not even mention Lyndhurst in any of their consultation. It’s really a survey saying asking us to tell them how well they’ve done. “What gets me the most is residents at a retirement village lost the bus route completely," adding the elderly were most dependent on public transport. She said there was no off-street parking in Rochester Parade, and suggested an alternative route on Alpine Heath Way. “We’ve offered solutions. We just want commonsense to prevail here." Lyndhurst Bus Network advocate Gabrielle Williams said the survey did not allow Lyndhurst residents to have their say about the bus route 897 (Clyde to Lynbrook Station). “We have always been left out of the consultation process and have never been able to communicate our concerns as a community.” Lynbrook Residents' Association committee member Paul Graham said: “There was nothing to say this is total rubbish and you’ve taken away my service or this is pretty average. It was all degrees of goodness which is just ridiculous.” Hunters Green Retirement Village Residents Group member Hans Mook said he was most “disgusted” that a discussion never took place with the removal of Rochester Road bus stop and shelter. A Transport for Victoria spokesperson said the survey attracted 542 responses for “very minor changes” to the Cranbourne bus network. Transport for Victoria have proposed a change for the Route 792 bus service include extending every service from Cranbourne Station to Pearcedale, and boosting the daytime frequency of buses from every two hours to every 45 minutes for Pearcedale residents.

Veterans and kids By Brendan Rees Australia’s war veterans have been honoured during a presentation at Alkira Secondary College. Year 12 VCAL students embraced the Anzac spirit when they presented films, podcasts and biographies to veterans of the Vietnam Veterans Association Education Team and members of Royal Association of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers on 19 October. VCAL student Michelle Carr said the veterans were “extremely impressed” by the students’ own films and podcasts, titled ‘What I Wish I Knew’ and biographies titled ‘I Was Only 19.’ “I am so proud and honoured that I have been given the chance to work with such an amazing group of inspirational people. This experience is something I will never forget,” Michelle said. She said presentations covered topics including parenting, racial discrimination, posttraumatic stress disorder, suicide, road safety, the military, disability and addiction.
“We wanted to learn more about these issues, not only on a factual basis but also on a deeper and more personal level; and we did this when we listened to the veterans recount their experiences.” Michelle said the veterans “loved listening to what the students had written about them in the biographies.” Her class also “couldn’t stop chatting” with one another about the knowledge they had gained after listening to the stories of veterans. She said her fellow VCAL students were highly thankful for the presentation opportunity. “Not only did the students find this whole experience to be extremely inspirational, but the teachers did as well,” said Michelle. War veteran Darren Thomas thanked the students for the presentation. “We have people lining up to be a part of your school’s education program. As a serving veteran, I am over the moon with what you all have been doing to support us, especially the Vietnam veterans," he said.
Call for car fire witnesses By Brendan Rees Casey Crime Univestigation Unit is appealing for witnesses following a car fire in Endeavour Hills at about 6.30am on Sunday 12 November. Police say they located the vehicle alight on Churchill Park Drive. Detective Senior Constable Nicole Spinks said it was alleged the car was stolen from an address in Officer sometime during the night of Saturday 11 November. She said a passerby had called triple-zero,
and no persons or items were located at the incident. “No description of anyone or anything like that - just if anyone has seen anything or seen a green Magna in the area at that time to let us know.” Det Sen Const Spinks said the fire was deemed suspicious, adding: “It’s not known if accelerant was used.” Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000 or Casey Crime Investigation Unit on 9705 3111.

Two workers at a Lynbrook automotive servicing business have been back-paid $7089 in wages after intervention by the Fair Work Ombudsman. One of the employees was a full-time clerical worker who was underpaid ordinary hourly rates under the Clerks Private Sector Award 2010. The other worker, a casual labourer employed only during the summer holiday period, was underpaid their ordinary hourly rates under the Manufacturing and Associated Industries Award 2010. After an audit request by the Fair Work Ombudsman, the business audited the workers’ full employment periods and made back-payments. It comes as 21 workers across Victoria’s Gippsland region have been back-paid more than $21,000 in wages and entitlements. In one matter, six cafe workers in Warragul, including a teenager, were underpaid $8749 after the employer incorrectly classified the employees. The workers were repaid after the Fair Work Ombudsman intervened and informed the business of its obligations under the law. In Leongatha 13 full-time employees were underpaid after their employer failed to update wage rates following the annual July increase to modern awards. Despite underpayments of as little as 47 cents per hour, the failure to apply the updated wage rates led to a total back-pay bill of $6027. Acting Fair Work Ombudsman Kristen Hannah said the employing businesses were on notice that future breaches of workplace laws would not be tolerated. “Business operators can become overconfident and as we have seen, this can lead to mistakes like forgetting to pass increases applied in the annual wage review or paying your workers at the incorrect level within the modern award,” Ms Hannah said.

World Vasectomy Day on Friday 17 November is the largest male-orientated family planning event in history. Urologist Philip McCahy said that Australian men are no stranger to the “snip”, with the country boasting the second highest rate of vasectomy in the world with more than 30,000 procedures performed each year. “Vasectomy is the most effective, safest form of contraception and can be quickly performed with a local anaesthetic in many clinics throughout the country,” Dr McCahy said. “Many men are still reluctant to consider a vasectomy and the idea behind World Vasectomy Day is to start the conversation about the procedure, to try and educate both partners about how easy the operation can be and to try and debunk a number of myths about what goes on - the procedure does not involve a couple of bricks!” Information about the procedure is available from GPs, specialists (in particular urologists, who regularly operate on the testicles and scrotum) and on numerous dedicated websites. “In essence, a vasectomy involves cutting out a small portion of the vas deferens (the tube that carries sperm away from the testicles) on each side,” Dr McCahy explained. “The success of the procedure is checked by testing how many sperm are present a few months after the operation. “It is important to remember that sterility cannot be guaranteed until that point.

Moving on from joint pain By President Of The AMA Victoria Dr Lorraine Baker Many of my patients who have painful joints are pleased the warmer weather is coming. The cold temperatures certainly increase pain and stiffness in worn out joints. Osteoarthritis (sometimes referred to as “wear and tear” arthritis or degenerative arthritis) is the result of damage to the cartilage at joints. It occurs most commonly in fingers, knees, hips and the spine. The cartilage, which usually acts as a firm cushion against the pressure of the bones as they move against each other, breaks down and causes pain, swelling and stiffness over time. Some people are genetically predisposed to their joints degenerating faster and others develop arthritis in a joint that was previously injured (think footballers’ knees). The older you get the more likely it is to affect you and also overweight and obesity can increase the load on foot, knee, hip and back joints in particular. It is different from an inflammatory arthritis like rheumatoid arthritis which arises in an uninjured joint and is a result of a process where a disease attacks the cartilage and the soft tissues around the joint. One of the most important aspects of any medical condition is prevention and I’ll focus on prevention, not only of arthritis, but of progression in damaged joints. The need for joint replacement is what we would like to prevent. In the case of osteoarthritis it is very important to give an injury - such as an ankle or knee sprain - adequate time to heal, otherwise it may lead to future degeneration in that joint. A physiotherapy program to rebuild strength in the muscles supporting an injured joint is ideal to assist recovery and prevent re-injury. Maintaining a healthy body weight and
general fitness and strength also helps to protect joints from wear and tear. Many people, once they are aware they have arthritis in a joint, can become very protective of it and avoid exercise. However, using the joint in a careful exercise regime and following a stretching and strengthening program for the muscles and tendons that act on the joint helps not only with stiffness but with pain. Remaining active also helps with maintaining a healthy weight. If you are overweight, losing even a few kilograms can make a huge impact on the load on your joints. The common medications recommended for mild to moderate osteoarthritis are paracetamol for pain relief and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) drugs which help with both pain and swelling. These coupled with exercise and stretching regimes can keep many people comfortable, active and able to enjoy life. Always let your GP know if you are taking these medications regularly. Side effects can occur and they can interact with other medications. If a joint has become severely arthritic - the cartilage is all but gone, bone rubs against bone and the surface deforms enough to limit movement - then more intervention will be necessary. By this stage you will need advice from a specialist (orthopaedic surgeon or rheumatologist) as to possible treatments. In many cases they will still recommend a specialised exercise regime to keep the muscles strong around the joint so that if joint replacement is your only option - the muscles around the new joint will be ready to work through the rehabilitation process and your recovery will be faster. So for any of you who have become less active and a bit stiffer through the winter months

Joel selected for state By Nick Creely Casey-South Melbourne batsman Joel Mitchell has a certain confident approach to his cricket that is quite rare in young cricketers, and he only has “one gear” to his game. While the 19-year-old Gippsland Pride product - who has shades of a young David Warner - continues to develop his game down at Casey Fields, the Victorian selectors rewarded his progress last week with selection in the Victorian Country Under 19 team for the National Championships in Tasmania through December. With the best young cricketers in the country set to lock horns in a carnival that showcases the next crop of state cricketers, the aggressive and daring opening batsman certainly believes he has what it takes. “I’m pretty excited - I did well up at the Barooga trials, and they obviously see enough talent to pick me,” he said. “I made a 70, a 60 and a 40 not out in the three games up there on good, quick wickets in NSW so it was good. “We have a pretty strong batting side, with guys like Tom Rogers from Melbourne University, James Ryan at Essendon, myself obviously, Tom Ewing, and others as well - it’s a pretty good side I reckon.” On Saturday - only days after being named in the Victorian side, Mitchell struck 92 in the second XI - his first half century in 34 innings at Premier level, a knock that included 10 fours and two sixes, as his Swans defeated Frankston Peninsula. It’s an exciting step forward for the swashbuckling opener with high ambitions of his cricketing future, with his confidence in his ability a standout feature in an opening month of the season that has netted him 190
runs at 31.7, all at an impressive strike rate of 86.7. “Obviously this year I’ve gotten a few starts, and I’ve done that a lot - the ones boys are always in my ear telling me how good I look when I’m batting, I just need to go on with it a bit more,” he said. “I need to go on with starts - I’ve been known as the king of the 30s at Casey. “In most games this year I’ve played against blokes I’m trying out against, and they haven’t got me out, I’ve got myself out. “I’ve been pretty unlucky at times this year - against Ringwood I smoked one back to the bowler and he just stuck one hand out and against Essendon I chopped one on. “That’s why the ones boys are always in my ear, because they know I’m good enough, I just need to apply myself - they say to me I should be playing with them.” “I really want to play first XI cricket, and try and make a hundred in the twos, or maybe a couple of 70s - but I’m just really excited to play Vic Under 19s, anything can happen down there. “If I make a couple of big scores, who knows what can happen.” And although the club is struggling on field as they continue to develop a core group of cricketers, Mitchell is loving his time down at the Swans. “We have a very young club, I think the oldest bloke in the ones and twos is Peter Sofra, and he’s the captain,” he said. “It’s exciting.” To follow the live scores of the Carnival, which will run from 4 to 15 December, head to the MyCricket app and CA Pathway Twitter account.

Nooy’s ton off only 8 overs By Russell Bennett There’s really only one way to describe how Saturday’s WGCA Premier clash between Emerald and Cardinia ended - 8.2 overs of sheer mayhem. Alex Nooy is just 23 and is in his first season as the Bulls’ coach and Premier grade captain, but he knows for the rest of his career he’ll never achieve anything quite like what he did late on Saturday afternoon at Chandler Reserve. Cardinia has consistently been one of the top grade’s pace-setters for well over a decade, but a slow start to the 2017/18 season has the Bulls scrambling to make up ground. Round 5 against the struggling Bombers presented Nooy and his men with the opportunity to claim an all-important, yet rare, outright win - the very round after Kooweerup inflicted the same result on them. After rolling through the Bombers for just 82 in 36 overs on day one, the Bulls reached 6/176 and declared overnight. But Emerald is a proud club and the Bombers were never just going to roll over. They were much more stoic in their second dig - reaching 200 in 55 overs. That set the Bulls 107 to claim outright points in 22 overs at a shade under five runs an over, but what happened next had to be seen to be believed. The Bulls reached their target in just 8.2 overs for the loss of only one wicket, and at 1/109 at the close of play Nooy was unbeaten on 103. “We were down and out (in the finals race),” Nooy explained to the Gazette after his astonishing knock. “If we didn’t get the 20 points, even the win wouldn’t have been enough. “Clyde is still a win in front of us but as I said to the boys after the game, this just brought us right back in that pack of (positions) three, four and five - Upper Beac, Clyde, Pakenham and us.” Nooy explained his overnight first innings declaration - saying his side couldn’t afford to lose any overs in a changeover. “I didn’t want us to go out to bat, lose three cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au
overs once we declared, and then lose another three if we were lucky enough to bowl them out,” he said. “I always thought they were going to make more than the 90 runs we were in front by but then we’d know the amount of runs we’d need to score off how many overs. “It worked out to be 107 for us to win (outright) and it was eight minutes to 5pm so we got two overs in that eight minutes, and then 20 after we ruled the book at 5.” Nooy praised Emerald’s second innings batting, admitting he questioned at one point whether an outright win would be realistically achievable. “I certainly had all sorts of thoughts running through my mind; not negative ones necessarily but wondering if we were going to bowl them out,” he said. “They put up a real fight. “To our boys’ credit, they bowled their areas and I don’t think we dropped a catch either which obviously helps.” Nooy opened the innings late on Saturday with just 91 runs to his name in six previous hits - including just two in the first dig against the Bombers. By his own admission, he was far from in form. “Being a new captain-coach I’ve wanted to lead from the front and set an example but it hadn’t worked out so far,” he said. “That’s probably the knock I needed for the team to respond to things that I say to them.” Nooy belted 10 sixes and nine fours, to go along with five singles and a two. Right from the outset, he had his eye on Chandler Reserve’s shorter square of the wicket boundaries. But he’s not a noted big hitter - far from it. It was a fact not lost on his team-mates, either. “Trav Wheller ran out a bottle of water when I was on maybe 70 and I’d hit seven sixes and he said ‘you’ve just tripled your sixes for your whole career!’,” Nooy said. “I definitely had a bit of a chuckle at that.” And he’s the first to acknowledge he’ll never play another knock like it. “People can’t believe I made a hundred off

After surviving an early chance an edge between keeper and first slip - Nooy chanced his arm. He knew his side had plenty of batting to come if he lost his wicket. “Even though we were scoring quickly it really wasn’t the thought process (during the second innings),” Nooy said.
“It was just that we were 1/45 when BJ (Ben Parrott) went out for five in the third or fourth over and after that I thought we had Ricky (Campbell), Aidan (Nooy), and Patty Nolen - some real hitters still in the sheds - so I may as well just keep going. Brad Reiner (1 not out) came out and joined me (at 1/45) and I thought if he and I could get the runs then good, but if not we still had plenty of batsmen to come and plenty of time left.” As it turns out, Nooy scored 63 of the final 64 runs of the game. Century for Leigh Booth By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 3 (DAY TWO) TURF 1 Hallam Kalora Park star Leigh Booth is arguably the most in-form batsman in the DDCA at the moment, and he’s proving a handful to dismiss for opposition teams. After being set 151 for victory against Dingley on day one, Booth (106 not out) stood tall among immense bowling by Dinuk Hettiarchchi (5/51) and Christo Otto (3/57) to post his third consecutive century in all formats of the game to push the Hawks past the Dingoes with two wickets to spare. A late cameo to tail ender Ben Hall (21 not out) also helped the visitors past the total after being 8/148, and the Hawks finished on 8/195 and claimed some vital points over a side also trying to push for a finals spot. But it was all about Booth, who is enjoying a stunning start to the season - in just five innings so far this season (including Twenty20’s), Booth has scored 11,15,109,106 and 106 not out, an aggregate of 347 runs at 86.8. Springvale South took care of Cranbourne with ease down at Alex Nelson Reserve, with the Bloods thrashing the Eagles by 131 runs on day two. After setting 278 for victory, the Eagles stood very little chance after being 2/40 as play resumed on Saturday, and were rolled for just 146 off 55 overs, with skipper Lucas Ligt (29) battling hard for his side. But it was spinner Jarryd Straker (7/41) who completely stole the show to cap off a dominant opening three rounds. Straker has now taken 16 wickets from his first three matches, and leads the wicket tally in the competition in the early stages of the season. Steve Spoljaric’s (1/17) seamers also proved
a handful, while slow bowlers Malinga Bandara (1/39) and Craig Slocombe (1/4) did their bit to grind the Eagles into the ground. Meanwhile, Buckley Ridges continued on with its irresistible start to the Turf 1 season with a crushing victory over reigning premiers, Mordialloc, at Park Oval on Saturday. After last week was washed out, the two sides played a one-dayer, with the conditions suiting the Bucks to a tee. Winning the toss and batting, Daniel Watson (51) and star Kiwi recruit Greg Todd (110) got the Bucks off to a perfect 79 run start, slamming the boundaries and putting the brilliant Bloodhound bowling line up under the pump. Todd made a wonderful century-anchoring the innings and seeing the Bucks to a formidable 6/235 off 40 overs, a total that had them sitting comfortably. Watson (4/19), Wes Nicholas (2/41) and Matthew Goodwright (2/26) then all combined with the ball to easy their way to victory, who weren’t able to recover after the key scalp Ian Daniel (18) was taken by gun seamer Jurgen Andersen early in the innings. At Lois Twohig Reserve, North Dandenong narrowly escaped an embarrassing reverse outright loss to St Mary’s, claiming the points after a drama filled day two. After rolling the Saints for just 39 on day one after making 126 themselves, the visitors rode their luck with the bat in their second dig, as Rhys Serpanchy (102 not out) and skipper Kaushyala Gajasinghe (86) somehow lifted them to 6/262 off 55 overs before declaring. With the Maroons needing 175 off 33 overs for outright, or simply to survive for first-innings points. The Heat elected to bat on a ripping batting deck, and although a patient Tom Wood (84) anchored the home side to a solid 8/225 off 50 overs, the Swans bowled with great intent. Nathan Lambden (2/33) and Brendan Rose (2/43) had their tails up early, snaring the early scalps of Gordon Waterfall (4) brilliantly caught at slip by Jordan Wyatt and dangerous batsman Liam Tonkin caught behind, leaving the Heat at 2/23. A top notch spell by the pair had the home side in need of a partnership at 4/94, but a quick fire 32 by Brodie Symons and a crafty 35 by skipper Dale Elmi saw the Heat start to swing the momentum. But it was left armer Jackson Fry (2/27) that provided the spark, first by removing Symons caught behind after drawing the Heat batsman into a false shot, before crashing through the defence of Kiefer Peries for a duck in a brilliant limited overs spell. Youngster Jonah Serong (0/37) impressed once again with his control through the middle overs, in another sign he will be a long term player for the club. Although Ryan Eaton (59) put in a terrific display of counter attacking cricket after coming in for the injured skipper Lachie Sperling, the Swans were bowled out for 170, with Heat bowlers Jake Wood (4/45) and Ben Ashkenazi (3/28) putting on a clinic with genuine pace bowling. At one stage, after Jordan Wyatt was caught at slip for 17, Ashkenazi knocked out Chris Benedek’s stumps the very next ball with sheer pace, before almost claiming a hat-trick, leaving the Swans 4/39 and unable to mount a charge. Brendan Rose (21) continued a strong three weeks of batting form, while Serong (15) showed he can handle the blade. A magnificent ton By Russell Bennett A magnificent century from Cardinia captaincoach Alex Nooy (103 not out) was the undisputed highlight of round five of the WGCA Premier Division on Saturday. Nooy’s Bulls had rolled Emerald for just 82 on day one of their contest at Chandler Reserve last week and declared overnight on 6/176. But the Bombers put up an improved showing in their second innings, scoring an even 200 to set the Bulls 107 runs, in 22 overs, to claim outright victory. Nooy led the charge superbly, producing a stunning innings that included 10 sixes and nine fours to lead his side to victory. The Bulls, well they completed their task in just 8.2 overs of sheer mayhem, ending with their score at 1/109. Nooy’s spectacular square of the wicket stroke play was the highlight of an innings that he knows he’ll never replicate. “I wasn’t really looking at the fielders - I was just hitting it,” Nooy said. “I just saw it and hit it. I got a few away and got to 20-odd and thought to myself ‘I’m not going to stop now - I might as well keep going’.” The Bulls now sit sixth, but just four premiership points behind third-placed Upper Beaconsfield. Despite Nooy’s heroics, almost all of the attention in round five centred on Clyde’s clash with Pakenham and just how the Lions would fare chasing the Cougars’ tricky 206-run total. Pakenham was yet to hit peak form and was facing a Cougars side looming as a likely finals
threat in its own right. But after losing Daniel Vela early on day two at 1/8, Nic Close (27) and Chris Smith steadied. Playing with plenty of positive intent, they punished anything too short or wide with the Lineham Oval surface providing plenty of value for shots. After batting particularly well in partnership in their 50-run stand, Close was caught by an absolute screamer in gully - bringing Zac Chaplin to the crease. He continued right where he left off and provided superb support for Smith, who was in vintage touch. When he’s in the kind of form he displayed for most of the day on Saturday, it seems there’s no part of the ground he can’t score in. Arguably the best batsman to watch in the competition, Smith gave a real batting masterclass - first with Chaplin (34) and then with skipper Dom Paynter (23) before both were trapped in front leg-before by John Simpson and Pat Lawson respectively. Smith’s stand with Chaplin, in particular, essentially took the game away from the Cougars. After 30 overs, the visitors required less than two runs an over to secure first innings points. Though Chaplin fell in the first over after tea, he and Smith had refused to let the Cougars’ bowlers dictate to them through their stand - rotating the strike consistently and punishing anything too short or overpitched. Paynter continued right where Chaplin left off and was aggressive right from the outset. Though he fell soon after making his start at
4/167 and Smith (90) just short of a richly-deserved ton at 5/193, the contest was done and dusted. But the Lions still had a point to prove - that they could bat out their overs against a quality attack. Jack Anning (38 not out) and Jason Williams (56 not out) used the remaining overs to gain some invaluable form in the middle, and both made the most of their opportunity as the Lions ultimately closed out the day on 7/296. Both batsmen displayed the kind of impressive stroke-play that the Lions may just need from the middle and lower order come the business end of the season. Lawson led the way with the ball for the Cougars, taking 4/78 while Damasara Menuwara was the other multiple wicket-taker with 2/56. Tooradin was chasing outright points of its own at home against finals aspirants the Maroons and declared immediately after passing Upper Beaconsfield’s (103) first innings total at 6/104 with opener Tom Hussey (40) topscoring. But Bathiya Perera’s side made much better going of its second innings, reaching 5/141 from 40 overs with Imesh Jayasekara (59 not out) scoring his third half-century of the season to date. Cal O’Hare (2/38) and Brayden Browne (2/14) finished with two scalps apiece. In the other clash of Round 5 - played over Saturday 4, Sunday 5 November - Kooweerup claimed its second straight outright victory by demolishing Merinda Park at Denhams Road, 97 and 85 to 1/132 (dec) and 1/52.

Cranny does it hard CRANBOURNE BOWLS After their first loss of the season last week, Cranbourne were determined to get back on track with a good win at home. The game was a tough contest but Cranny got up to win by seven shots against Hampton Park. Club selector Doug Boggie, recovering from hand surgery watched on and gave full praise to his charges. “The team played very well today, we were well down on one rink at the tea break but they bounced back and held their own while the other three rinks just got on with the job to give us the win,” he said. Side 1 Division 2 Cranbourne played Hampton Park at home and recorded a seven shot win. Fritz Helle was promoted to skip and won by 12 shots, well supported by his team-mate and up-andcoming future star, Gavin Wright who bowled superbly. Skip Ron Lyfield and his crew won by seven shots and was well supported by Brian Caddell, Peter Colthorp and Ian Barrenger. Side 2 Division 3 Playing Berwick on a synthetic green was no problem for Cranbourne who went on to win by 21 shots. When the team got back to the clubhouse the talk was all about how well club legend Ray “Bosky” Boskell bowled. But the big winner on the day was Skip Joe Byrne and his crew of Shane Morrison, Peter De Lisle and Gary Farrington who won by 14 shots. Side 3 Division 5 How can a rink win by 18 shots but their team loses by nine shots on the day? Well that’s what happened against Cockatoo at home. Skip Sofio Raiti and his rink of Frank Male, Barry Graham and Harry Van Soest won by 18 shots and were in great form and almost bridged the gap. Club singles grand finals will be played this coming Friday at 3pm and visitors are most welcome to see bowls at its best.

History was created at the Upper Beaconsfield Cricket Club on Friday evening with Blake Westra becoming the first player to score a junior century at the club. The 11-year-old cracked a brilliant unbeaten 110 - off just 62 balls - against Catani in the Under 12 Red competition, an innings studded by 18 glorious boundaries. Blake opened the batting and retired on 51 not out off his compulsory 35 balls before returning to the crease in the latter stages of the innings. He received great support from his teammates, with Shenal Wickramasinghe (18 not out) and Zac Croker (10 not out) playing crucial roles in Blake’s hunt for triple figures. Blake hit 59 runs from his final 27 balls, the Maroons finishing on 7/200 from their 30 overs in a terrific team performance. David Westra - who doubles as Blake’s dad and coach - was just as humble as his son after his epic performance. “I’m very proud of Blake, he’s a humble kid, but he must get his talent from his mum,” David said with a laugh. “It was great atmosphere out there, I was umpiring at the time and the support Blake received from his team-mates was just enormous. Zac and Shenal batted really well and the atmosphere was amazing, the kids were going crazy on the sidelines.” Blake is the middle of three brothers, with 14-year-old Joshua and eight-year-old Trent not the only family members with something to aspire to. “He’s been ripping into his brothers, good naturedly, about being the king of the castle,” said David, who has opened the batting with Blake in the lower senior grades of the WGCA.
