A NATION DIVIDED: the Great War and Conscription THE debate over conscription during the darkest years of the Great War has been described by some historians as the most bitter, divisive and violent ever to consume the nation.

From 1916-'17 thousands of impassioned speeches were made, endless newspaper columns written, mass meetings and huge rallies were held throughout Australia.

As families, communities and organisations divided in bitter recrimination, it seemed as if the soul of the grieving nation would tear itself apart.

A new exhibition at the Old Treasury Building tells the story of this extraordinary period in our history.

It is a tale of political intrigue, industrial turmoil, civil unrest and a lurid propaganda war. But it is also a story of passionate idealists, who faced down government repression in pursuit of their beliefs.

In the end, it is the story of the triumph of democracy amidst the most testing circumstances ever experienced in Australia.

Now largely forgotten, the two conscription referendums were held during the worst years of the Great War. Australians had enlisted in large numbers in the first year of the war, but as casualty lists mounted on the

War correspondents observing the horrors of the World War I battlefields in France - a conflict that divided a nation.

HOW long have you been involved with Probus and with which club/clubs?

I have been a member of Probus for nearly four years. I belong to Wheeler’s Hill Men, where I am currently the vicepresident. I have also served as treasurer for two years.

WHAT is something most people don’t know about you?

That I was in the Royal Australian Engineers from 1975 to 1984.

What was your most memorable outing or event with Probus?

Travelling around the Bay with four other members. Starting at Glen Waverley to Southern Cross Station to Geelong, then a bus to Queenscliff and lunch, a ferry to Sorrento then bus to Frankston, train to Richmond then home, 14 hours later.

What has been your most embarrassing moment?

Answering a question without notice at a delegates meeting.

What is your favourite book?

Nevil Shute’s A Town Like Alice.

What is your favourite television show?

The Doctor Blake Mysteries.

What was your first or best concert?

My best concert was a one-man show by Glen Shorrock of LRB fame.

What event - past, present or future, would you like to attend?

I would dearly love to attend my Mum’s 93rd birthday.

Which six guests - dead or alive - would you invite to a dinner party?

Boz Scaggs, Glen Frey, my Dad, my great-

great-grandfather James Shanahan, Jimmy Bartel and my sister Lyn. What would your last meal be?

Birthday cheers for 20 years ON 25 August 2017, the Combined Probus Club of Tunstall celebrated its 20th birthday.

Following speeches, foundation members were honoured with a certificate and pin at the club meeting and afterwards members celebrated a birthday lunch at the Knox Club.

Foundation members Jill and Des Kidd have both been actively involved in the Combined Probus Club of Tunstall since 1997. Jill is editor and produces the monthly Bulletin and Des is club treasurer.

The club honoured them with the 20th birthday cake cutting in August.

The club inducted foundation member Ian Mackechnie as a life-member at the birthday celebrations in August.

Lady leaders inaugural luncheon ON Wednesday 4 October, the Ladies Probus Club of Vermont South celebrated the Presidents Inaugural Luncheon for all past presidents and foundation members.

This event was organised by president Susan Bergin and her committee.

Thirty ladies enjoyed a two-course meal preceded by champagne and followed by tea, coffee and chocolates at the delightful venue of Clarion on Canterbury, Forest Hill.

The table was decorated in the Probian colours of blue and gold with flowers to complement.

On display were the club’s banner, made by various members of the craft group, there were also photo albums depicting members and activities over the past 26 years.

During the luncheon, a few ladies spoke of their history and experiences with the club.

All presidents voted the day to be a huge success.

After boarding the river cruise vessel, La Marguerite, travellers will explore the tiny tributaries of the Mekong that lead to hidden villages and places like Oudong, the former royal capital of Cambodia, where guests will have the rare opportunity to receive a traditional Buddhist blessing by monks.

They can enjoy taking in the colourful scenery along the Mekong as they witness the daily lives of the Cambodian and Vietnamese people and meet the locals in small villages along the river and gain an insight into their lives.

Then there is the fun of a rickshaw tour of Tan Chau, known as one of the largest silk-weaving centres of Vietnam where visitors can enhance their experience by visiting the fascinating local artisan workshops to learn more about the history of the craft.

The final two nights are spent in vibrant Ho Chi Minh City.

Here guests have free time to explore the city or perhaps take an exciting Jeep military tour or enjoy a Vietnamese cooking class.

The members enjoyed morning tea including the special celebratory birthday cake, prepared by Pauline Richardson and cut elegantly by president Beryl Homes.

WHILE now small in number but great in spirit, members of the Ladies Probus Club of Blackburn Lake celebrated their 25th Anniversary in style on Thursday 7 September 2017 at their meeting place, Manchester Unity Hall in Main Street, Blackburn.

Eight of the Foundation Members (two were absent), who are still associated with the organisation, established in 1992, enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie at the anniversary.

Afterwards, members happily adjourned to the Glen Waverly RSL for a delightful luncheon within the very pleasant surroundings.

The Ladies Probus Club of Blackburn South is one of three ladies clubs among a total of 18 Probus Clubs currently active in Nunawading.

HELLO Probians, Our Probian publication is a pleasureable and vital link between members and clubs.

Knoxfield Probus ladies on their toes KNOXFIELD Ladies Probus Club has enjoyed a busy year, with more to come before Christmas.

The photo shows a few of the members competing with the beautiful begonias earlier this year. The club has had interesting speakers and lovely outings including lunches and Sunday brunches lively with chat and laughter.

The group visited a local nursery for garden tips, had a tour of Gulf Station Homestead in Yarra Glen, a tour of the wonderful Geelong Wool Museum, with an added bonus being the annual Scarf Exhibition, the Ballarat Begonias and a visit to the Narana Aboriginal Culture Centre.

The group has had a tour of the Yakult Factory and the Hosome Gingerbread factory with delicious samples of both products.

The club is about to undertake a luncheon cruise on the Goulburn River, a theatre trip to watch Aladdin and Morning Melodies at Mulgrave.

The group has had speakers such as Bev Brock, a speaker representing Women in Afghanistan Support Group, the CEO of Irabina Autism Services supported by the gorgeous therapy dog Muffin, and our local councillor among others. The group

has been beautifully entertained by the Frankston Ladies Choir.

Knoxfield welcomes visitors, especially other Probus members if you are in our

area. The new meeting day for 2018 will be the last Wednesday of each month at the Waverley Golf Club, Bergins Road, Rowville, at 9.45am.

That was part of the Probus Club of Leongatha’s theme song as members set sail each morning along the waterways of the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria.

Twenty members of our club - together with others from Sydney, Adelaide and Bendigo in Victoria - had a memorable four days of cruising the enormous expanse of rivers and lakes comprising the Gippsland Lakes system from Sale to Lakes Entrance aboard the Spirit of Australia’s boat ‘Spirit 1’.

The crew and extra passengers on our trip soon warmed to club members, who offered them friendship, fellowship and fun in true Probus spirit.

The cruise commenced at the Port of Sale on the Thompson River, which was one of the rivers navigated along with the

Latrobe, Perry, Avon, Tambo, Nicholson and the Mitchell to the township of Bairnsdale.

All these rivers collectively feed the Lakes system which includes the lakes of Wellington, Victoria and finally King before joining the ocean at Lakes Entrance.

Club members enjoyed perfect weather conditions, a vast array of wetland bird life and their habitats, some man-made

structures including the oldest surviving historic swing bridge in Australia located over the Latrobe River and the Railway Trestle Bridge at the township of Nicholson.

Also of interest was cruising alongside the naturally formed silt “jetties” which are the longest in the world.

Another highlight was to tour the waterways around the township of Paynesville by boat.

Accommodation was comfortable in motels at Sale, Paynesville and Lakes Entrance.

All members from the Probus Club of Leongatha thoroughly enjoyed this diverse trip and thanked the Captain of ‘Spirit 1’ and his crew for their exceptional attention to detail in overseeing their needs and ensuring enjoyment during four days of cruising.

Inspiring Mallee discovery tour THIS has been a very busy time for Seaford Probians. In September our dine out group travelled on the ferry from Sorrento to Queenscliff to Ro Ro restaurant situated right beside the pier. A delicious two-course lunch was served by their very friendly staff, with a free drink and coffee included. The group returned on the ferry very satisfied.

The trip away this year was called the Mallee Discovery Tour. The group travelled up to Kerang with their free seniors rail tickets and were met by the tour bus and taken back to Barham.

Nineteen members were made welcome by our hosts at the Riverland Motel, Kristy- Lee and Clint, where they stayed for a week, exploring the Mallee and Murray River districts. The was taken on trips every day and the members were treated with fantastic country hospitality wherever they went.

A special highlight was the visit to Piccoli’s Family Farm where they met John Piccoli who is paraplegic and has been in a wheelchair since he was eight years old. After life as a successful farmer, Piccoli discovered his talent for sculpture.

He designs and builds them himself, working out ingenious ways to create his sculptures from recycled open-ended spanners totally unassisted.

These sculptures are large and life-sized, and this wonderful man is an inspiration to all. The whole trip was inspirational as everywhere the group went the members saw examples of Aussie ingenuity in creating new and often quite novel ways to reinvent themselves and their properties to meet the demands of our changing world.

They saw sheep and cattle farmers who now are winemakers, pheasant farmers and exporters of olive products just to name a few. All were providers of great tourist experiences to keep their district vibrant and alive.

This was indeed an inspirational trip!

Riveted by riverlands DANDENONG LADIES PROBUS Wentworth - Mildura - Riverlands Tour 2017 Day 1: Bus stopped for lunch at Wycheproof ... 125 years since the day the railway was opened, the trains still roll on the tracks through “Broadway� (name after the street in New York) carrying harvest to port.

Day 2: Was rather wet under foot but was appreciated by the farmers. The old Wentworth Goal now stands as a vivid reminder of the harsh colonial days. We were all on good behaviour and were paroled.

Across the road was the Pioneer museum, there was a video about the great flood. It had everything from dinosaurs, fossils - the collection displayed pioneering to the present.

In the itinerary we were to visit the Perry Sands hills, we didn’t actually see the drifting sands of the ice age formation, some of out group had been before and said the red dunes were quite stunning.

We had a wonderful lunch put on by the bowls members at their club. Orange World, what can we say about Mario, he is ltalian born in Belgaum. A couple on the train tour stopped him in his tracks when they said they had been married for 68 years.

Onto Woodies gem shop, Aladdin’s cave, crystals, fossils and carvings, large range of gems and jewellery. Dinner at the Crown hotel, one hour of TV and bed.

Day 3: lf anyone has done a European bus tour, five hours you have been through six countries and 47 Catheradrals - in Aus, three states and a lot of mulga, saltbush and scrub.

exhibitions from the Lutheran chapel which had beautiful leadlight, dentist display (ouch), telephone exchange and school.

Quick look at Loxton town, then onto Berri for lunch, was a welcome break. Some went to the tourist cafe others the pub food and staff were great, windows were opened along the front, views of the river side park, gentle breeze and a glass of wine.

Next the Almond Hut, Renmark, Angrove winery.

Day 4: The last day was the most relaxing, Ruby’s Cargo co-op. A Wentworth grown business producing local handicraft of original wares.

Then Mildura wharf to the PV Rothbury, built in 1881 as a large and powerful ‘tow boat’ and was renowned as one of the fastest paddleboats on the Murray. Passing through lock 11 heading down stream, it was a very tranquil two hours. Mildura plaza, a lazy walk window shopping and time for a wine while waiting for the bus to shopping mall for lunch.

Bob Taylor, Fred Richards and Barry Arnold gave an entertaining rendition of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Policeman’s Lot is Not a Happy One�.

Group enjoys the good times

For dinner we had a magical night from the historical port of Wentworth cruising the Murray Darling rivers while enjoying a first class barbecue. They had spotlights on the decks, a unique experience, the reflection from the trees in the water was stunning, so were the fireflies.

THE Cerberus Combined Music Group was enthralled by the performance by three of its members singing The Policeman’s Lot is Not a Happy One from Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penance.

Recently club members had a wonderful day trip to Phillip Island, where members boarded a launch and sailed around Western Port and re-discovered the many islands that are in this very beautiful area.

Lunch was enjoyed while on board the launch.

A great end for our tour.

PS. Aileen Leydon and June Gorman came from around the area, it bought back early memories.

The day trip to the Gold Fields was another great adventure, where members explored the very historic town of Maldon.

The recently started Mah Jong group is proving very successful, with many members taking the opportunity to learn and enjoy this game of long standing.

Club members are taking the opportunity to join in with the many and varied activities that are provided which makes for great friendships and a very happy time.

Footy show with Kerang twist Mystery MEMBERS of the Probus Club of Kerang had lots of fun and laughter at the September meeting.

With both the local footy finals and the AFL Grand Finals looming, members were encouraged to come wearing their footy or netball gear. Well, Dick went all out and his picture tells the story!

The club’s version of the Footy Show featured the Kerang Footy Panel made up of our very own Charlie Beale, a past player

with the Rovers; Gary Farrant, who once played for North Melbourne, together with local Home Hardware manager Peter Hall who played for Kerang.

Questions were fired at them from members, and they gave some really great answers, also joining in the fun of the day.

After the panel, club members all enjoyed some home-made soups, pies and sausage rolls - a great way to end a terrific morning.

farm tour WHAT a lovely surprise for 46 Keilor Probus Club members when they arrived at a mystery tour destination - Donegan’s Farm at Gordon.

After a welcome hot cuppa, members were taken on a tour of the farm with Peter Donegan. Baby lambs, calves, cows to milk, amazing variety of chooks etc.

Following this, they had a lovely three-course country-style cooked meal. No complaints there.

After a group photo, it was time to board the bus. On the way back, they stopped at Bacchus Marsh and bought fruit and vegetables from the wholesale markets. All members of the group had a great day.

The Footy Show featured the Kerang Footy Panel made up of Charlie Beale, Gary Farrant and Peter Hall.

Steam has pulling power PAKENHAM East Probus Club members visited Kerrisdale in August.

What a great find it was for railway and steam engine enthusiasts and anyone interested in magnificent scenery.

Kerrisdale is a narrow gauge line located halfway between Yea and Seymour with spectacular views of the entire Upper Goulburn Valley and beyond. On a clear day even Mt Buller’s snow can be seen.

The weather was crisp to say the least but the sun managed a smile and the club’s keen photographers had the added bonus of capturing a complete rainbow in the valley. The 35-minute trip took members rattling among the beautiful trees to the summit.

The passion of hosts Andrew and Jenny shone through as they demonstrated their restored engines from a bygone era. The museum of railway memorabilia was very extensive and of great interest.

Lunch at the historic Broadford Hotel finished off another great day for Pakenham East Probus Members.

PROBUS clubs mourn the passing of the following valued members.

CENTRAL GEELONG FREDA ALLEN Once again we mourn the recent passing of an esteemed member of our club. Freda Allen joined Geelong Central soon after the club was founded in 1993. In charge of Club Service at the monthly meetings from 1996 until 2014, Freda also provided a cake for Committee meetings through out those years. Freda’s exemplary service was recognized with the presentation of an Appreciation Plaque in 2008, followed in 2013 by Life Membership. The President and members offer deep and sincere sympathy to Freda’s family on their sad loss.

DAVID GUILD With regret and much sadness we acknowledge the passing of a Foundation Member in David Guild.

Respected and highly regarded, David’s contribution to the club was considerable, holding office as President in 1995, Treasurer 2000/01/02/03/04, and he was a current Gold Pass Member. The President, Committee and members offer deep and heartfelt condolences to his family, but especially to Jessie for her sad loss of David.

JUNE CHAMPNESS It is with much sadness that we write of the passing of our friend and esteemed member, June Champness.

June was an active and enthusiastic participator in Probus from 1995, and was responsible for membership 1999, 2000 and 2001 and became President in 2003. The President, Committee and members offer their heartfelt sympathy, thoughts, and prayers to Len and the Champness family for the sad loss of June.

DOROTHY MCKENZIE It is with regret and sadness that the club reports the recent passing of Gold Pass Member Dorothy McKenzie, a valued member of the Probus Club family. Dorothy was involved in the Bulletin Mail Out from 1993 until 2013 and she and her late husband Colin, were enthusiastic members of the Club from the early days.

The heartfelt sympathy of members is extended to Dorothy’s family.

Clubs extend hand of friendship LOCAL Probus Clubs of Timboon, Mortlake, Camperdown, Terang and Cobden celebrated their second “friendship day” on Wednesday 30 August, at the Cobden Recreation Rooms. Some 110 Probus members were in attendance for the day. Cobden members catered for the day and did a great job of feeding the masses.

Cobden Probus members under the leadership of Val Maynard performed a wonderful skit to the amusement of their audience. Val also kept members amused with, “what have I got in my bag?” With members having to think of what she had put in her bag.

It was agreed by all present to hold another gathering next year and the Terang Probus Club were the first to put their hand up to run the 2018 friendship day.

Last year the Timboon Probus Club ran the first friendship day which proved a

wonderful success.

Oldest member Grace is gone, but not forgotten THE Bunyip Garfield Probus Club is saddened at the loss of Grace Kellaway, who was 99 years old and the club’s oldest member.

Condolences were sent to Kath and her family.

Michael Hodge, CEO of the Pakenham Racing Club, was one of the interesting speakers the club has had over the past couple of months.

He spoke about the history of the club and also of its future now that they have moved to Tynong.

It means they can now run over 40 races a year which is a big increase to their racing calendar to what they could run at Pakenham and they are now looking forward to the next stage of their development.

Jim Mynard talked about the Kooweerup Swamp being drained.

There were conditions for men who wanted to work on digging the drains.

Firstly they had to be married to be able to be given 20 acres of land but they had to work for two weeks in the month on the

drains while the other two weeks they had to work on their farms to improve them or they could lose them.

Jim has always been interested in the history of the swamp and has written a book on the possibility of a major flood in the future.

After Jim’s talk there was a special footy lunch of hot dogs and pies.

The footy supporters were dressed in their team colours and looking forward to the finals with the hope that their team would win.

In the afternoon there was a handball competition with goal umpires who were dressed for the occasion and of course there was lots of laughter and fun.

The Morning Melodies have been very enjoyable. Last month members were entertained by Elvis to the T. He sang a lot of the songs that we all grew up with and loved. One of the club’s talented members was invited up on stage to sing along with him, which the members all loved.

A century in style PAKENHAM East Probus Club put on a celebratory morning tea for Sybil Hickman on reaching her 100th Birthday.

Sybil is a foundation member of the club and is still actively involved, with her son John, daughter Margaret and son law Don are all members of this club.

The birthday cake was made in the form of cupcakes on a stand with 100 year candles on top, made by the ladies of the club.

Sybil was thrilled to get her telegram and certificate from the Queen as she migrated from England many years ago.

THE Combined Probus Club of Maroondah loves a special exhibition.

The club’s Craft Group has ventured to the likes of Bendigo, Geelong or Ballarat in the past and recently went to the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne to view the Dior Exhibition.

They went by train, enjoyed the walk to the NGV - it was a trip down memory lane and the garments were so beautiful.

As always, there was lunch afterwards with so many good restaurants to choose form along Southbank!

Members take a sentimental journey A GROUP of 20 Donvale Hill Probus Club members and friends from the Probus Club of Donvale Hill went on a delightful journey back in time to Arden the Singing Gardens of the poet C.J. Dennis in Toolangi on 25 October.

The actual home itself had a chequered history and finally burnt to the ground in 1965. The current owners, Jan and Vic Williams bought the overgrown property in 1969 and worked their magic in restoring and planting the gardens.

The visit was at the very best time of the year to see the wonderful rhododendrons and azaleas in full bloom and also the majestic trees towering above the group.

teapot with a hand crocheted cosy and later all were given a delightful home-made lunch of minestrone soup, sandwiches and a fresh warm scone straight from the oven.

One special tree was planted in the 1930s when C.J. Dennis was alive and was a subject of one of his very moving poems The Tree. The host, Jan, stood under this now huge tree and recited this poem which was very moving.

The group was impressed with how Jan could remember Dennis’s poems and was able to recite several of them.

Upon arrival the visitors were provided with a refreshing cup of tea served in a

Membership is the lifeblood of club THE Ladies Probus Club in Heathmont was delighted to induct four new members at the September meeting.

Each new member was introduced with a brief account of past events in her life and how she became interested in Probus.

Several of these ladies have joined the interest groups and new friendships have begun.

A recent successful event recently held by Heathmont Ladies Probus was an afternoon tea to which we invited our new members and visitors. This provided an excellent opportunity for committee and group leaders to mingle and for new members to ask any questions they may have concerning Probus.

An induction ceremony is over quickly, but the feeling of belonging to this club and able to take part in a wide range of activities remains.

There are always positions vacant and support needed towards the smooth running of the club. New members are asked to contribute in some small way and they did. They are not expected to be president or secretary immediately - but here lies the future of this club. Finding new members is the responsibility of each current member for the club to continue as it has in the past.

Our outings are well planned and interesting. The most recent one was to the Old Melbourne Gaol. A playreading was performed by Probus members, Ned Kelly’s trial. Judge Sylvia was required to impose sentence on Ned Kelly (her husband Alan).

Other cases were heard by Judge Kerin. At the conclusion of the trials, members took part in a tour of the gaol. On this occasion a few men came along to participate in the playreading.

Chinese Museum in Little Bourke Street was another interesting outing. We were shown over the building which has three levels; the first one had brightly coloured

dragons, including the very large dragon which appears at Moomba, supported by 30-plus men, each year. Next level told of the mining done by early Chinese settlers in Australia. They eventually left the mines and became market gardeners. More stories on the next level of the girl’s tiny shoes and how to be beautiful they must squash their feet into these shoes. After this informative tour, we enjoyed Yum Cha at a Chinese restaurant. This was a most enjoyable day.

There are so many options to take part in when you belong to a Probus club and so many friendships made. Heathmont Ladies Probus is fortunate to have willing members who will organise the various interest groups, outings, trips away and luncheons.

Probus is definitely a great organisation to be part of.

Punters have loads of fun

Straight from the golden years of TV THE Blackburn Central Combined Probus Club was fortunate and honoured to have Pete Smith (from Channel 9) as speaker for the August meeting.

He was a huge success with our members, taking them back in time to the first days of Black and White Television and the wonderful live shows of that era.

There were so many names mentioned within his presentation, one couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t help but smile, remembering â&#x20AC;&#x153;the good old daysâ&#x20AC;?, as we so often say.

The slapstick comedy routines of In Melbourne Tonight and Peteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s voice-overs in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Saaaaaaale of the Centuryâ&#x20AC;? were

remembered with fondness.

Also the 60 seconds adds that ran for 25 minutes with Graham Kennedy and Bert Newton, destroying the product, but leaving lasting memories of what they were advertising - â&#x20AC;&#x153;Roull Merton shoesâ&#x20AC;?, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Pal dog foodâ&#x20AC;? and many more.

Pete was a wonderful speaker, without written prompts, all coming from the memory bank and the heart. Pete finished his talk leaving our speaker convenor with a prop of Bert Newton. A very happy group of people went home with a brightness in their step and smiles after enjoying a trip down memory lane.

A DAY OF FUN FOR MORE THAN ONE

AS has become customary for this club, the start of the Spring Racing Carnival is heralded by the running of the Lara Cup. Punters were encouraged to place their bets ($2) on the 16 horses named according to strict guidelines after prominent people from around the club (President Marjorie, Brian the Book-keeper, Tomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Coffee Club, Lunch with Heather, Secretary Elaine, Excellent Speakers, Welcome from Mae, VP Colin, Classy Newsletter, Pamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Outings, Golf at Elcho, Tuesday Treckers, Trips with Denise, Judy and Lorraine Dineouts, Theatre Trips and Catering by Mary).

The race was called by past president Terry Hynes timed with a Melbourne Cup film clip, and great excitement ensued when it was time for first, second and third placegetters to collect their winnings.

Europe tour and cruise IN JULY and August a small group from Syndal Combined Probus enjoyed a fiveweek break from the Melbourne winter.

The group toured Spain and Portugal and then, after a few days in Lyon, France, transferred to Chalon-Sur-Saone to join a cruise down the Saone and Rhone Rivers.

They experienced many highlights in all three countries and enjoyed warm summer weather for the entire trip.

Overnight stopovers during the Spain and Portugal tour included Madrid, Valencia - home of the America’s Cup in 2007, Granada with its famous Alhambra Palace built in the 14th century and Seville with its Maria Luisa Park - full of fountains, ponds and pavilions, and centrepiece of the 1929 World Exposition.

From Seville they also visited Jerez, famous for sherry production and the port of Cadiz on the Mediterranean Coast - the departure point for many of Christopher Colombus voyages.

The group then crossed into Portugal staying in the Algarve region for a night before travelling on to Lisbon, one of the nicest cities in Europe with many attractive Baroque fountains, street cafes, medieval alleyways and outstanding views, A visit to the pilgrimage town of Fatima preceded a night in Salamanca, then a lunch stop and exploration of the famous hill top city of Toledo. On to Madrid and a

farewell dinner ended a lovely tour.

The group then returned to Portugal and spent five nights in Porto, then three in Lyon, France, before joining a Scenic River cruise from Chalon-Sur-Saone, ending in Tarascon in the south of France.

The cruise stopovers gave the group

many opportunities to visit historic monuments, fortified villages and towns, aqueducts, museums, cathedrals, castles, palaces, chateaux, caves, bull ring amphitheaters, wineries and other places of interest - some dating back to Roman occupation more than 2000 years ago.

They're up for adventure “YOUNG at Heart” could be the catchcry of the members of Donview Heights Probus Club.

There are regular opportunities to join in a variety of activities including supporting local venues through delicious Chat ‘n’ Chew luncheons and outings to local cinemas and theatre group productions.

Day tours are regular monthly adventures that keen members really look forward to - recent trips have included visits to a Scottish Baronial castle in Keilor, scenic tours to Point Nepean and the grandeur of the Bellarine Peninsula and historic Queenscliff, which included a refreshingly calm ferry ride to Sorrento.

Club members were like schoolkids during a visit to the quaint Central Highlands village of Blackwood when a brief but brilliant snowstorm accompanied the delicious country pub roast lamb and vegies (yes, followed by sticky date pudding) - there is nothing like a cosy log fire and good company while thick snowflakes are driving past the windows.

Monthly meetings are held every third Wednesday in the homely atmosphere of our local RSL with its well-appointed cottage-style atmosphere.

Donview Heights Probus is a friendly club having recently celebrated its 26th birthday and new members are very welcome - Dorothy’s scrumptious homemade shortbreads and Anzacs alone are worth the visit.

Fascinating Grainger collection THE Grainger Museum is the only purpose-built autobiographical museum in Australia. Imagine having a museum dedicated to your life and work!

The fascinating Grainger Museum collection contains not only objects directly related to Percy Grainger’s compositional career, such as scores and manuscripts, but also more than 50,000 items, including diaries, ethnographic objects, furniture, decorative arts, photographs, artworks, clothing and correspondence with famous and not-so-famous contemporaries.

Currently on display in the museum is Grainger Photographed: Public Facades and Intimate Spaces, an exhibition that continues until the end of March 2018, and looks at aspects of portrait photography through the prism of Grainger’s diverse collection.

The exhibition juxtaposes fine formal portraits from some of the world’s most highly regarded studio photographers alongside intimate images of Grainger’s private life.

As Percy Grainger was photographed extensively throughout his life, the exhibition allows us a rare display of portraits of the man from birth to old age.

The exhibition is accompanied by a series of free public programs. Talented sand sculptors at work “WHEN the beach is more than 100 kilometres away, what can you do with sand?

Create 40 tonne of “sand artistic sculptures”.

The Sand Art Gallery presents “The art of music” - sculptures made from sand to inspire and excite.

The picturesque Macedon Ranges, only 45 minutes from the heart of Melbourne, is the perfect backdrop for some of the world’s most talented sand sculptors to create their sculptures.

In the region’s first sand sculpture exhibition, Rosie and Leo invite you to their gallery. Currently, the gallery boasts nine sculptures carved by eight sculptors with another four sculptors creating new masterpieces in October and November.

Set in the first ever gallery-type formation for sand sculpture, this is an exhibition to inspire and delight everyone.

Each 20-tonne sculpture took seven days of enthusiastic work to create, and are displayed under our majestic dome tents to create an all- weather exhibition.

Trusted name in aged care AS people get older, it may become increasingly difficult for them to take care of their homes or their daily needs due to poor health or physical conditions.

Sometimes, a little help is all it takes for a person to remain living at home safely and independently.

Entering the aged care system can seem daunting, but with the right support, people can continue to live the life they want, according to leading aged care provider Southern Cross Care (Vic).

“Getting support at home does not mean losing your independence or missing out on the things that matter most to you. In fact, it is quite the opposite,” says Garrick Georgeson, Southern Cross Care (Vic)’s Operations manager, Community Services South/East.

“There are a variety of home support services to choose from, ranging from personal care to house cleaning, basic home maintenance, meal preparation, gardening or transport to a doctor’s appointment. Social support is also available, if you wish to pursue an interest or hobby, attend a family event or a social club in the community. The choice is endless.”

Mr Georgeson says one of the biggest challenges facing people entering aged care is having to choose from the huge number of providers in the sector.

“People need to consider how much experience a provider has,” he says.

“There are lots of new entrants who may be well-motivated, but don’t have extensive track records.”

Mr Georgeson says after guiding people through the system to receive government support, Southern Cross Care (Vic) offers free phone advice or in-home conversations about care options.

National Choral School in January. He plays trumpet and piano and is a soloist with the local symphony orchestra. He really loves his music and seen pictured here playing the title role in the Tin Man. His ambition down the track is to be a professional music theatre artist. Watch out Mr Hobson!

BLACKBURN CENTRAL Members of the Blackburn Central Probus Club visited the Creswick Woollen Mills in Hawthorn, and had a very enjoyable day.

The company provided free transport and gave members a cuppa and morning tea, consisting of sausage rolls, party pies and an assortment of tasty cakes.

This was followed by a model parade show that displayed a wonderful range of clothing and matching accessories for style.

There were two men in the group, which delighted the staff, as it must be a rarity to see males at their shows.

Robert and Walter took it in their stride to be with a busload of ladies and strutted their stuff on the catwalk, showing off the male apparel.

Apart from clothing, there was a great range of bedding and rugs to chose from. It was a lovely morning- the staff were friendly and helpful, making it a fun outing for the club.

MOOROOLBARK COMBINED Late September, 42 members of Mooroolbark Combined Probus Club travelled on a McKenzies coach to Greenvale for a tour of Living Legends, the International Home of Rest for Champion Horses.

On arrival the group was treated to a traditional Devonshire tea in the historic Woodlands Homestead, which was established in 1843 and is situated in the

1700 acre Woodlands Park. It is a rare example of a large portable house brought to Australia from England.

A guided tour of the champion horses which included Melbourne Cup winners Prince of Penzance and Brew - along with dual Cox Plate winner Fields of Omagh, gave members the opportunity to get up close and feed the thoroughbreds.

Following the tour, members enjoyed a lunch of gourmet sandwiches and drinks.

Heathmont Probus Club ladies visited the Chinese Museum in Little Bourke Streeet and had a great time.

There were three levels of displays including the magnificent dragon which comes out each year at Moomba.

There were other extremely colourful smaller dragons, lions and a pedal carriage.

The guide referred to the tiny shoes the Chinese girls had to wear for beauty.

There were many of them in the display cabinet.

The group heard about the Chinese men who travelled to Australia and worked in mines before becoming excellent market gardeners.

After this tour, the group had Yum Cha at a nearby restaurant. This was a fitting end to a most successful outing.

ALL IN FOR BIRTHDAY BASH Greenwood Probus Club hosted a 23rd birthday bash in August, where members were entertained by Club Kaalua.

September’s meeting for the Broadford Combined Probus Club was a real family affair with four generations from the one family all present.

Guest speaker Samara Cooke took us on a ’travel adventure’ with entertaining stories about her many overseas trips.

Samara’s bright personality and passion for travel made it a very enjoyable morning for us all.

Samara is the grand-daughter of Graeme and Patricia Marshall who are president and treasurer respectively of the club.

Her great-grandmother Lal Marshall was in charge of the morning tea while Samara’s mum and sister were guests on the day.

MARYVALE COMBINED Thirty-three members of the Maryvale Combined Probus Club enjoyed a wonderful day at the Dalkeith Heights Retirement Village in Traralgon on 3 August.

They started off with a wonderful morning tea followed by a unique scavenger hunt.

Next they were taken on a tour of the facility, dining room, gym, pool, snooker room, library and general administration.

Outside, the members saw the bowling

green, community vegetable garden and lovely outdoor barbecue facility, before inspecting four vacant units of different layouts throughout the 120 available units.

After our tour the group all sat down to a delightful three-course luncheon. They then were treated to a movie in the onsite cinema.

This wonderful day has left the group looking forward to the next outing (adventure).

MONBULK The Combined Probus Club of Monbulk celebrated its 21st birthday in September.

Members enjoyed an extended morning tea at the September meeting followed by a very interesting talk by Marion Preston about Birdsland, Monbulk, and the surrounding area. Marion told the stories regarding the pioneering families of the area and some of the hardships they endured.

An excellent lunch at Rose Cottage later in the week was enjoyed by members.

DOZEN DAYS OF OVERSEAS FUN Earlier this year about 30 members of the Paynesville Probus Club toured Norfolk Island and New Zealand, dividing their 12day trip between the two destinations.

The ages of members ranged from mid-60s to almost 90 and everyone enjoyed the trip greatly, especially the final night at the Sky City Casino’s revolving restaurant, with city lights visible for kilometres.

Members thanked Bruce and Kaye Eacott for organising the trip, the photo shows and the early Sunday morning departure from Paynesville, enroute to Tullamarine.

WANTIRNA Do you love a cute puppy?

Well if you do, then a visit to Guide Dogs Australia is just the thing for you. Sixteen from the Wantirna club went on this outing to Kew. They had a lady presenter who has been a volunteer at GDA for many years and has a deep knowledge of all that is involved for the dogs in their reproduction, training in a home, speciality training on the site, and selection of a suitable candidate for assistance. She was open to questions about the property, the program, the failures, the successes and the costs involved. We were able to see the puppies being trained.

These are very valuable dogs - it costs $50,000 to train a guide dog, so they are very well cared for. Many of the dogs go to those who are vision impaired, but some are used for the disabled, for customs, for the police, and one will soon go to an ex-serviceman with PTSD. Demand for a Guide Dog is high and numbers are being increased depending on resources available. GDA has a number of buildings on an extensive property which is owned by the State Government and on which they have a long-term lease. However, after 60 years, significant work is needed to upgrade the buildings and extend them to meet current needs and funds are being sought for this.

After the visit members enjoyed lunch at Fountains Restaurant in Box Hill, a training restaurant for the hospitality students at Box Hill TAFE.

FAWKNER MERLYNSTON Members of the Fawkner Merlynston Probus Club and friends travelled to Broken Hill mid September to take in the surrounds and typical country hospitality. A great time was enjoyed by all.

Dr Kara Brit from Peter Mac was guest speaker at the October meeting, enthralling members with her presentation on her breast cancer research work and findings.

The Probus Club of Wantirna Heights recently visited the Fire Services Museum in East Melbourne.

The first thing to strike the group was the beautiful mosaic on the outside wall of the museum’s gracious old building on the corner of Gisborne Street and Victoria Parade.

One of the experienced retired fireman was the guide and gave a wonderfully enthusiastic and detailed commentary about the development of fire services, uniforms, equipment and procedures throughout the years.

Originally each company in Melbourne had their own individual fire insurance.

If your building caught on fire and the wrong fire engine arrived, they would not put out the fire because you were not insured with them. You had to wait for your company’s engine to arrive.

This all changed when the variety of firefighting companies amalgamated into the MFB. The group was treated to examples of records that were kept, photographs, paintings and tributes and yes there was a fireman’s pole. Upstairs in what originally was the hay loft, the pre-computer communication equipment was on display.

This enjoyable and informative visit was rounded out with a look at the new fire station next door.

Geelong enjoys year of outings THE Geelong Central Probus Club’s year commenced with a fellowship day at Queenscliff, but unfortunately with inclement weather on the day the group of around 30 members and friends sought shelter in the nearby Esplanade Hotel, which obliged to cater for this large group at short notice.

The group enjoyed a great lunch and fellowship.

A very enjoyable Sunday luncheon outing to the Mt Moriac Hotel was enjoyed by 21 members during February, while in March 20 members travelled to the theatre to see Kinky Boots, which was thoroughly enjoyed.

Day out at tram museum transformed from a tram depot in 1940 to uniform manufacture and later a driver training school.

The site was redeveloped in 2002, including a conversion of the main depot building into residential units and restoration of the original shed to house the museum.

A pub lunch at the Rising Sun Hotel in Burnley followed. After lunch the weather closed in, so members sloshed back to Burnley Station for the trip home.

ON FRIDAY 15 September, 21 Monash Combined Probus Club members visited the Melbourne Tram Museum and reminisced about our past and present travel on trams in and around Melbourne.

The museum is housed in part of the old Hawthorn Tram Depot built in 1916, and was operational until 1965.

The depot now houses the heritage fleet of tram cars including a classic ‘cable gripper’ car built in 1886.

The main thing to remember is that heat stroke can set in quickly if an animal is exposed and you must seek veterinary attention immediately.

Get them into a cooler environment; use wet cloths but not iced water to cool them; and offer them water but don’t force them to drink. Even if the animal cools and appears OK it is wise to have it checked as internal organs could have been affected.

Above all, don’t tether animals out in the sun and don’t leave them in cars, even for a short time with the windows down. In a car, heat stress and death can occur within a few minutes.

Vets&Pets Russell Harrison, Head of Hospital Services Lort Smith CEO IT’S getting towards the warmer months of the year - a time when we start to see a lot of heat-related problems in pets.

Animals with underlying medical issues, the very young and the very old are most at risk, but we need to keep an eye on all animals during high temperatures.

As summer arrives, make sure your pets - and any local wildlife - have constant access to cool water and shade as heat stress can develop extremely quickly on hot days.

It’s important to plan ahead. For example, make sure there is more than one source of water, so that if a bowl gets knocked over or the shade disappears, there is an alternative source of cool water.

Some dogs will avoid drinking from bowls with floating ice cubes, but you can freeze half-filled bowls and then top them up with cool water before putting them out.

If you can’t keep your pets cool inside, make sure there is adequate shade throughout the day so they won’t get caught in full sun.

For smaller animals, such as guinea pigs, a little bag of ice wrapped in small wet towels could provide heat relief, and for birds a gentle misting might help, as long as it doesn’t stress them.

If you leave out a larger tub or bucket make sure it is secure and provide a stick or rock for an animal to use to climb out to prevent drowning. You might be able to hang a water dispenser from a tree or put a bowl in a hanging basket that can be easily accessed by tree dwellers such as birds and bats.

Signs of distress In pets, watch out for excessive panting;

dark or bright red tongue and gums; sticky or dry gums and tongue; staggering; seizures; diarrhoea or vomiting.

In wildlife, the danger signs are: nocturnal animals out and about during the day, tree-dwelling animals on the ground and any animal showing signs of lethargy or disorientation.

Also keep an eye out for snakes During summer the snakes are out, and at Lort Smith Animal Hospital we see a large increase in dogs and cat victims. If you believe your pet has been bitten, it is critical that you seek veterinary advice as soon as possible.

You need to be aware of the typical signs of envenomation as you may not see your cat or dog get bitten. These include vomiting, salivation, dilated pupils and sudden weakness followed by collapse.

MANY of my patients who have painful joints are pleased the warmer weather is coming. The cold temperatures certainly increase pain and stiffness in worn out joints.

Osteoarthritis (sometimes referred to as “wear and tear” arthritis or degenerative arthritis) is the result of damage to the cartilage at joints. It occurs most commonly in fingers, knees, hips and the spine.

The cartilage, which usually acts as a firm cushion against the pressure of the bones as they move against each other, breaks down and causes pain, swelling and stiffness over time.

Some people are genetically predisposed to their joints degenerating faster and others develop arthritis in a joint that was previously injured (think footballers’ knees).

The older you get the more likely it is to affect you and also overweight and obesity can increase the load on foot, knee, hip and back joints in particular. It is different from an inflammatory arthritis like rheumatoid arthritis which arises in an uninjured joint and is a result of a process where a disease attacks the cartilage and the soft tissues around the joint.

One of the most important aspects of any medical condition is prevention and I’ll focus on prevention, not only of arthritis, but of progression in damaged joints. The need for joint replacement is what we would like to prevent.

In the case of osteoarthritis it is very important to give an injury - such as an

Maintaining a healthy body weight and general fitness and strength also helps to protect joints from wear and tear… ankle or knee sprain - adequate time to heal, otherwise it may lead to future degeneration in that joint. A physiotherapy program to rebuild strength in the muscles supporting an injured joint is ideal to assist recovery and prevent re-injury.

Maintaining a healthy body weight and general fitness and strength also helps to protect joints from wear and tear.

Many people, once they are aware they have arthritis in a joint, can become very protective of it and avoid exercise.

However, using the joint in a careful exercise regime and following a stretching

and strengthening program for the muscles and tendons that act on the joint helps not only with stiffness but with pain. Remaining active also helps with maintaining a healthy weight. If you are overweight, losing even a few kilograms can make a huge impact on the load on your joints.

The common medications recommended for mild to moderate osteoarthritis are paracetamol for pain relief and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) drugs which help with both pain and swelling. These coupled with exercise and stretching regimes can keep many people comfortable, active and able to enjoy life.

Always let your GP know if you are taking these medications regularly. Side effects can occur and they can interact with other medications.

If a joint has become severely arthritic - the cartilage is all but gone, bone rubs against bone and the surface deforms enough to limit movement - then more intervention will be necessary. By this stage you will need advice from a specialist (orthopaedic surgeon or rheumatologist) as to possible treatments. In many cases they will still recommend a specialised exercise regime to keep the muscles strong around the joint so that if joint replacement is your only option - the muscles around the new joint will be ready to work through the rehabilitation process and your recovery will be faster.

It’s death by another name My Word Laurie Barber

I LOST a good friend recently.

In the condolence messages that I saw one word stood out. That word was vale.

We take friendships for granted. In good health, we sometimes talk about death as if it were something we needn’t worry about, at least for a long time.

How many times have you heard a relative say something along the lines of “when you go…”?

Or if the relative is talking about somebody who is really sick they usually suggest something along the lines of “if anything should happen to So and So…” Death is one of the words we hate to use, probably because it is so final.

As children, we have a strong belief in our own immortality. Even as we grow older, death seems to be something that affects “other people”.

It’s only when we start losing more of our friends that we realise time catches up with all of us.

If we can find some other way of describing death we will.

Some dictionaries in my possession say that vale relates to valley. They do not mention the death of a person.

My big dictionary says vale relates to the declining years of a person’s age, but then it says vale relates to goodbye, farewell, adieu.

To valedict is to bid farewell. So does valediction.

Valedictory is something like saying farewell and giving an oration at the same time.

Vale-dictum is to say farewell. I have yet to see a face pop up from the coffin, but I live in hope.

I know a person who wants to be buried in a coffin, with a mobile phone. But will she have reception? Can you just imagine the scene in the church…

Many years ago I wrote a column piece about death and passing away.

I said: A common euphemism for dying is “passing away”. That is a way of saying dying without causing too much distress.

My big dictionary has 11 pages devoted to the word pass.

Euphemisms for death range from the serious to the ridiculous. Some are: Popped off; gone to the happy hunting grounds; met one’s maker; answered the call; no longer with us; given up the ghost; met the grim reaper; bought it; cashed in one’s chips; called it a day; settled one’s account; bit the dust; croaked; went feet first; turned up one’s toes; shuffled off.

Some people in certain government positions have talked about collateral damage, wastage or negative outcomes, when trying to avoid stating the obvious.

The Times in London once reported that a hospital had described a death as a “negative patient-care outcome”.

The use of the simple word death to describe the cessation of life has been with us since as early as the year 888.

But if you really have some friends that you haven’t seen for a long time, make the effort now. Be warned, however: If they say to you something like “you’re looking very well” that’s the time to start worrying.

Ringwood to Rome with Probus THE Ringwood Clocktower Probus Club was formed 10 years ago and has grown into one of the larger clubs in the Pacific Region. It is a combined club with 150 members - of which over 100 attend each monthly meeting.

With 31 activity groups, each with a convener, members have plenty to choose from to remain active. The club is managed by a committee of nine, with presidents alternating to reflect that it is a combined club.

One of the earlier activity groups was the Digital Photography Group, largely a selfteaching group, enhancing their technical and artistic skills. To have a challenging project there was a slightly tongue-in-cheek suggestion that the group produced an in-house calendar. The ladies imagined our male members skipping along the beach in their budgie smugglers. What the men imagined cannot be described! But the suggestion was adopted with enthusiasm and 2018 edition will be the 10th.

As “marketing manager”, past president Graham Locke presented his annual sales spruik at the club’s September meeting. The calendar is in full colour and each month has a gallery of members’ pictures of past activities and the events co-ordinator adds details of all the daily activities for the year.

This year Graham’s presentation, surprisingly, linked the calendar to the Roman occupation of Britain 2000 years ago, which revealed a very different Probus.

Marcus Aurelius Probus, was Emperor in Rome 232 to 282 AD. As commander of the Roman army he set up a chain of defences along the Channel to protect his army from

The country had been occupied by Julius Caeser in 55 BC and the Romans remained there until 409 AD. Julius had calculated the so called Julian calendar which remained in use from 44 BC to 1582. It was modified in 526 AD by a Roman monk Dioysius Exiguus who calculated the likely date of the birth of Jesus and the BC/AD system.

The word calendar is derived from the Roman ‘Calends’ which were the dates when interest due on debts became payable. But the arithmetic was flawed as each year was 365 and one quarter days and this distorted the due dates over the years.

So in 1582 Pope Gregory XIII cancelled a couple of weeks and relaunched the new calendar, with three years of 365 days and every fourth of 366, the so called leap year.

This is today’s Gregorian Calendar.

However as there was a schism between the Roman and English churches, thanks to Henry VIII, this calendar was not adopted in Britain until 1752. It was slowly adopted by other countries over the years - Japan in 1873, China in 1912, Russia in 1918 and finally Greece in 1923.

While it is now in universal use, the traditional calendars with no BC period have a very different annual date, such as 5777 in the Jewish year and the old Chinese and Buddhist years are also very different.

The Romans remained in Britain until about 409 AD and in later years were facing the threat to their authority by increasing conversions to Christianity.

They were ruthless in their opposition and exerted cruel torture and the deaths of all they saw as threats. One person captured and cruelly tortured was Probus.

His bravery as a martyr was recognised in 300 AD when he was sanctified as Saint Probus.

One of his defensive garrisons in Cornwall was in a village that still bears his name - Probus, 10kms North of Truro.

There is a Probus Club in Probus.

The parish church also honours his name and that of his wife as the Church of St Probus and St Grace. It has the tallest steeple in Cornwall.

The English translation of the Latin word Probus means ‘upright, honest’ from where we get ‘probity’. But it also means liberal and generous - which members of Ringwood Clocktower Club are, as they donate to acquire their club’s calendar.

Any excess over costs is used to provide equipment required to assist presentations within the club and also to produce beautiful cards that mark special events of club members, birthdays and anniversaries etc, with appropriate pictures provided from the Camera Group.

The Ringwood Clocktower Calendar records how active are our retirees with their Fun, Fellowship and Friendship. It also ensures they do not miss any of the 31 activities because they forgot the date.

GREAT DAY AT

THE RACES MITCHELL River Probus Club celebrated “Spring into spring” at the Bairnsdale Racing Club on 3 October, 2017.

Members were joined by Probus members from Maffra, Orbost and Lakes Entrance/Cunninghame for a fun social day of dining, phantom race calling, hobbyhorse racing, best hat and lots of lucky prizes and raffles.

Barbara and Ian Abell - married 70 years.

A marriage built to last IAN and Barbara Abell joined the Probus Club of Maroondah in 2005 and have enjoyed many of the activities, especially the cabins and caravans trips.

Ian has been involved with the Lions Club for over 53 years - he was a charter member of the Warrandyte Lions Club.

In World War II he belonged to the AIF, Mountain Battery 2/1 Tank Attack Regiment and served in Papua New Guinea. His working life was involved with insurance, and he held managerial positions in several Australian states.

Ian was an early member of the club as many of the early members were from the Ringwood Bowls Club and they were recruited to commence the Probus Club.

The hobby horse race got plenty of laughs.

Ian loves lawn bowls. He has been the convenor for Long Walks (2006) and the Trades convenor until recently.

Barbara was born in Fiji and has fond memories of that country. She has been a member of Ringwood Ladies Probus Club for many years. She was a legal secretary for all of her working life and this has influenced her penchant for letter writing to The Age newspaper - she has had many letters published. She continues secretarial work for the Doncaster Ladies Tennis Club.

Her interests are tennis and reading.

They were married for 70 years in September. They have had three children.

Both have loved travelling, bush walking, camping and caravanning.
