Strong show Cranbourne-trained Shadale is TAB Melbourne Cup bound following a faultless display of speed and strength at Sandown Park last week. He began well and had room to accelerate early and lead. He established a three-length break down the back straight and given his strength looked awfully hard to beat. He went on to win by three and a quarter lengths in a sharp time of 29.38. “He’s a lovely dog and has done a great job so far,” his trainer Jim Redenbach said modestly. Shadale’s win was his first start back over the sprint trip following a short stint over the middle distance competing in series at both metropolitan tracks. “He didn’t quite handle the bend start over 600m, however those runs have strengthened him even more. I think this win proved that.” The win wasn’t handed to Shadale lightly he defeated a quality field that included group one winners Thirty Talks, Aqua Cheetah and Mister Twister. “He’s jumped back to a free-for-all, it’s pretty hard for a lot of dogs to adapt but not for this bloke.” Redenbach’s initial plan wasn’t to nominate Shadale for last night’s meeting, instead he intended to hold off until next Thursday’s fourth and final Melbourne Cup Prelude series. “Because he pulled up so well I nominated him. I was going to hold him back until next week’s Preludes, but I thought what’s the point of having him stay home, he’s in top condition so we might as well find a race for him.” Shadale will without doubt meet a hot field in next Thursday’s Prelude series, with some of the country’s top sprinters yet to confirm their eligibility for Cup heats.
Cranbourne trainer Jim Redenbach will set his star sprinter Shadale for the $600,000 TAB Melbourne Cup after his big win at Sandown Park. Redenbach has 54 years of experience under his belt and is not foreign to having a live chance come Melbourne Cup time. He put the polish on Hot Shot in the late 1990s, who started favourite in the 1997 Melbourne Cup however was unable to convert. Redenbach’s brother in-law and manager of owners the Gebecepe Syndicate, Geoff Lance, is also excited by what lies ahead. “We had Coolan Miss shape up to be a hot chance leading into a Melbourne Cup, unfortunately she went amiss. It’s very exciting to have Shadale going well at this time of the year,” Lance said. Next Thursday’s Prelude series will act as the perfect entree to Melbourne Cup heats on Friday 17 November, widely regarded by purists as the year’s best night of greyhound racing. Fortune favours Ben Allan It wasn’t quite how Cranbourne apprentice Ben Allen would have expected to make his debut in Australia’s most famous race - but he’ll take the dream ride anyway. The 18-year-old - whose family has a rich history at Cranbourne - picked up the ultimate late ride when he secured a berth on the Willie Mullins-trained Thomas Hobson in Tuesday’s $6 million Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m). Allen, who thought his day was finished after riding in three of the first five races, was called up as a late replacement for star Hong Kong jockey Joao Moreira, who suffered a fall aboard the Chris Waller-trained Regal Monarch in the fourth race on the card. Moreira received no significant injuries from the fall but was deemed unfit to ride Thomas Hobson in the famous Flemington two-miler. Allen was one of a handful of jockeys considered for the ride, considering Thomas Hobson’s light weight of 52 kilos. “You don’t expect to pick up a ride the day of a Melbourne Cup,” he said after finishing a gallant sixth in the great race. “It was a case of just being in the right place at the right time, dropping some quick weight and learning as much as I could about the horse. The strapper gave me a really good run through and then Willie Mullins gave me his thoughts as well.” Allen is apprenticed to his father John, who trains out of Cranbourne, and has a strong family involvement in the sport. His brother Matthew rides for Cranbourne trainer Robbie Griffiths, his sister Rachel is now retired from the saddle, while his sister Amanda is his manager. And now he has a taste, he wants to return to the biggest stage in racing next year. “It was awesome, I still can’t believe I ran sixth in the Melbourne Cup. I just want to be back next year and try again.”

Race after race after race The Cranbourne Racing Centre is gearing up to again host Australia’s busiest race meeting, the City of Casey Tricodes Night, on Saturday 18 November. The night brings together the three racing codes for one action-packed night featuring thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing. Renowned as the busiest race day in the country, there will be non-stop action in the space of five hours, with 23 races to be held across the three codes. Cranbourne Turf Club and Harness Club CEO Neil Bainbridge said the unique Tricodes event, which was now in its 16th year, was one of the most exciting and highly-anticipated events on the racing calendar. “There really is no other race meeting in the world like Tricodes Night, with all three tracks lit up at the one venue and constant racing action throughout the night - it’s a racing enthusiasts’ dream,” he said. “Cranbourne is one of the few unique venues in this country that hosts all three codes and it’s great we’re able to bring them together

■ Man torches car then caught by members of the public…
Car goes boom A 33 year-old Narre Warren man has been arrested following a car fire in Cranbourne South on Thursday 2 November. Fire crews from Cranbourne and Devon Meadows were called to the incident on Fiona Drive, about 11.15am, where the car was found alight in a culvert. Cranbourne CFA Senior Station Officer Ian Glass said the fire was contained within three minutes. He said he walked about 100 metres down the road where the man, allegedly involved in the car fire, was being held by two members of the public. “We were first on scene, extinguished the fire and found out that two civilians had caught the gentleman that had de-camped. They held him there until police got there. “According to eyewitnesses, he got out of the car and was hitting the car then it went up in flames. “The two civilians did an awesome job,” he said. Detective Senior Constable Ruben McAlister said the Narre Warren man was arrested at the scene. Police allege from witness statements the man deliberately set the car on fire. “From what the locals are saying and the footage that was on Channel 10 news, and bits and pieces it would appear some accelerant’s been poured on the vehicle and he set fire to it. He’s been apprehended by some locals,” Detective Sen Const McAlister said. He said it was not known why the male, who was allegedly drug affected, committed the act, adding the fire “had a dramatic finish.” “Charges have been laid for the criminal damage and driving matters and that’s before the court.” He said no-one suffered any injuries. Asked what the offender said during the police interview, he said: “Nothing that we’re going to comment on.” The male has been remanded in police custody to appear at the Frankston Magistrate’s Court on 1 December.

said Cranbourne was the “racing heartland” of Melbourne’s South-East, and the Cup Day meeting was another opportunity to showcase the club’s high-class racing and entertainment complex. “We are very excited to be part of the Melbourne Cup Day action and thank the Victorian Government for its strong support.” Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera said the Cranbourne Racing Centre was the largest entertainment complex in the City of Casey. “The addition of Melbourne Cup Day to its racing calendar will only enhance its reputation as one of Victoria’s best racing venues.” Minister for Racing Martin Pakula said Cranbourne’s first Melbourne Cup Day meeting was a great opportunity for the club to showcase its outstanding facility with some quality racing. “We’re proud to support this new race meeting on the Cranbourne Turf Club’s calendar because it attracts visitors, boosts the local economy and supports jobs.” Since 2014, the Labor Government has provided more than $1 million to support 14 projects for the Cranbourne Turf Club, including the Cranbourne Training Complex.

Thousands flocked through the gates at the Cranbourne racecourse as it hosted its first ever Melbourne Cup Day race meeting on Tuesday 7 November, thanks to almost $47,000 in funding supported by the State Government. Grey clouds didn’t deter 3000 racegoers and their families who were treated to a big day of racing fun from Cranbourne, including all the action from Flemington with a big screen on course. Children were entertained with rides, ponies, music and sporting activities. The State Government provided almost $22,000 through the Victorian Racing Industry Fund towards the event, with the Cranbourne Turf Club contributing almost $23,000 and Country Racing Victoria a further $2000. Cranbourne’s Melbourne Cup Day meeting is part of Country Racing Victoria’s bumper Spring Racing Carnival, which includes 51 weekend and feature race meetings across regional Victoria between 23 September and 26 November. … BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE The editor’s desk This is a week where racing takes centre stage. Most of the focus is on Flemington for the huge Melbourne Cup Carnival, spearheaded by that race that stops a nation. People who take scant interest in racing throughout the year are happy to play a part in one of the four big race days this week - the Derby, Cup, Oaks and Stakes race days. It now also showcases what the racing industry brings to the South-East region, which has become an epicentre of the racing industry. Cranbourne and Pakenham have been part of the carnival action. Cranbourne hosted a meeting on Melbourne Cup Day for the first time in its 150-year history and Pakenham continues to build on its big Pakenham Gazette Oaks Day meeting. Both racing centres provide enormous benefit to the region. Racing Minister Martin Pakula said on Tuesday that the government was proud to support the new Cup Day race meeting at Cranbourne “because it attracts visitors, boosts the local economy and supports jobs”. Cranbourne has the largest training complex in the Southern Hemisphere, creating hundreds of long-term jobs for the region, and has bold plans for a 100seat convention centre and accompanying hotel complex in the pipeline. Pakenham built Victoria’s newest racecourse a couple of years back and is on a similar path, with some of racing’s biggest names looking to establish satellite stables there. Racing is an industry that draws its critics, but this region would be poorer without the benefits it brings in many areas. Garry Howe

The college took out the Outstanding Education Support Team award in recognition for its Lift Off program which began at the start of this year, with 18 students enrolled from seven local secondary schools in the region. “I was extremely proud of our well-being team and not surprised with the result, as Lift Off is an effective, inclusive educational program that re-engages students who otherwise might slip through the cracks,” said Cranbourne East Secondary College principal Mandee Strickland “We look forward to developing and building on the program so that more students can benefit.” Ms Strickland said the Lift Off program was an initiative of the Cranbourne East Secondary College well-being team. “It was 12 months in the planning phase, and was created from the simple premise that all students need to engage in learning, but we recognised that many students face barriers that needed to be addressed.” She said student outcomes had been “phenomenal” and exceeded expectations.

MP Brian Paynter has made renewed calls for the State Government to build a police station in Clyde North as the community lived in “constant fear.” The Member for Bass said “the fast-growing suburb of Clyde North has borne the brunt of Melbourne’s crime wave” under the State Government, and asked Police Minister Lisa Neville if she would commit to building a new police station. “Minister, with a house invasion or breakin every three hours in the new suburb of Clyde North, figures are the worst they have ever been. What do the families of Clyde North have to do to convince you that a new police station is vital and that your neglect of these families’ safety is putting them at risk?” Mr Paynter asked. He added: “Minister, will you now commit to building a police station at Clyde North so that the local community, many of whom are young families, no longer live in constant fear?” Ms Neville said the State Government was committed to the “biggest increase in police numbers” to open stations. “What brings down crime in local communities like Clyde North is making sure we have got the right numbers of police supporting those communities. That is my commitment: to ensure that Victoria Police have the powers, the numbers and the resources they need to keep all communities like Clyde North safe,” she said. Latest Crime Statistics Victoria Agency data showed burglaries were up 39.7 per cent in Clyde North, with thefts increasing to 58.9 per cent from 129 to 2015 in the year to June. Mr Paynter lashed out at Ms Neville, saying his question had “nothing to do” with police numbers across the state.

On 1 November, The Berwick Cranbourne News Facebook Page shared a story of the Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association being labelled as “Losers in Exile” by mayor Sam Aziz, after they reiterated their criticism of Bunjil Place. CRRA spokesman Brendan Browne described the $125 million civic-arts precinct as a “nice building, but you would expect that when you spend ($115 million) of ratepayers’ money.” The story brought forward some strong opinions. Could have had old images of the past, showing what we’ve come from, you know. Aziz has a case of “one upmanship“ mentality and used Bunjil as an excuse to justify his new age world of council offices. Though it is an interesting building with European contemporary design to it, but it didn’t feel like or see any design feature, to show off or live up to its native name. As a ratepayer, I feel jibbed on its initial opening. Rhys Harrop: Happy to put in as many estates as you can, but can’t update the roads. The roads should have been updated way before all these 10s of thousands of homes have been built. $168 million on this s*** is a joke.

Biggest loser’s a winner Tipping the scales at 210 kilograms, Jason van Stam struggled to do everyday tasks like tie his shoelaces, cook dinner or mow the lawn. Combined with his work as an interstate truck driver, he constantly felt fatigued and had no “get up and go”. “I could only get a quarter of the lawn mowed before I’d have to sit down and have a rest,” Jason said. “I couldn’t stand up for long enough to cook a meal, I’d have to have a break and come back to it. “The seatbelt on the truck didn’t fit anymore ... and getting up and down the truck was a real effort.” Suffering from high blood pressure and sleep apnea, the Cranbourne West resident saw a specialist who gave him the wake-up call he desperately needed. “The doctor told me that if I kept going the way I was going, I’d be dead in five years,” Jason said. “I knew I was big and I knew it was getting worse, but I thought I was healthy for my size given I didn’t have heart disease or diabetes, but I was just kidding myself.” Jason, who is now a garbage truck driver, said the doctor’s words rang home on a personal level. “I lost my dad in 2014, and I just thought that I didn’t want my daughter to have to go along in life without a dad like me,” he said. Jason had gastric sleeve surgery, joined a local gym and decided to eat more healthily. He also set himself a personal goal to get fit enough so he could compete in the Tough Mudder Half challenge, held on 29 October in Myrniong, Victoria. Tough Mudder Half is a nine-kilometre mud course with more than 10 obstacles specifically designed to test teamwork and endurance.
Jason van Stam celebrates after losing a staggering 93 kilograms. 174614 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Jason, who now weighs 117 kilograms, got through the whole challenge, albeit for one obstacle dubbed “Everest 2.0”. “I’m ecstatic with myself - 12 months ago I couldn’t even walk 10 kilometres, let alone compete in something like that with that many obstacles, but gee I’m dirty with myself that I couldn’t do that one (Everest 2.0),” Jason said. But not one to shy away from a challenge, Jason is now training to compete in a mini triathlon in Melbourne in January and is aiming for the full Mudder challenge next year. Jason’s participation in Tough Mudder Half also raised just over $700 for Soldier On, well over his $500 target. Soldier On is a not-for-profit organisation that helps servicemen and women access the support they may need to lead successful and fulfilling lives. “My father was in the Army, my uncle served in Vietnam in the RAAF and my grandmother was in the WAAF (Women’s Auxiliary Air Force), my wife’s family are all Defence and it’s something that is just really close to my heart,” Jason said. A 30-degree pearler drew more than 4000 to take in about 900 exhibits - including some of Peter Brock’s most significant vehicles. One of the eyecatchers was a two-of-a-kind Rambler Royce made in 1976. It used to be owned by former Gold Coast mayor Bruce Small, who introduced Surfers Paradise’s famous Meter Maids.
Got the munchies Police executed a drug warrant on Von Nida Drive in Cranbourne North on Tuesday 31 October, but not only were there a number of police vehicles in the area, a Domino’s Pizza car was also spotted pulling up in the street. A person, believed to be the occupant of the house who waited as police searched the property for several hours, decided it was past his lunchtime and had pizza delivered to the house.

A rare Rambler Royce - its 'Oneof2' number plate says it all.
As the song goes: “Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree, merry merry king of the bush is he.” But at Tooradin, this was not exactly the case. A kookaburra is now king of Tooradin Primary School where he sits atop a school timber sign, laughing all day long. Just one thing - he can’t fly because he’s one part of a mural painted by students across the school on Tuesday 17 October. Tooradin Primary School well-being co-ordinator Rachel Davis said the school was privileged to work with the artists from Melbourne’s Murals, Brigitte Dawson and Melissa Turner, to create a large school mural. “Students from across the school entered a drawing competition to work with Brigitte and Melissa to design and paint two large murals that captured the wonderful coastal environment of Tooradin,” Ms Davis said. She said the students were asked to use the local coastal or bushland environments as their inspiration, with bunyips, fishing platforms and Sawtell’s Inlet included. “Tooradin Primary School will position these two wonderful murals for the community to enjoy and for students and families for many years to come to share in the pride we all feel about our special coastal community and school.”

Tumour that shrank By Brendan Rees Effie Atkins is one tough fighter. After doctors told her there were “no more options” available to defeat her liver cancer, she refused to give up hope. Searching for answers, the 66-year-old from Berwick offered herself as a guinea pig for an experimental trial at Monash Hospital - a new form of cancer treatment that mobilises a person’s immune system to fight the disease. “To my unspeakable joy the growth of my own tumour was quickly arrested,” she said. Effie’s life has been turned around. Her tumour has shrunk, and she remains in good health. “It is a miracle. Here we are nearly two years now. I live a normal life with this treatment.” Effie thought she had beaten liver cancer eight years ago after an operation, but after a few years doctors discovered tumour markers were growing. “My cancer is a very rare cancer, it’s genetics, per say. They only have a few in the world
so they didn’t have any data how to treat this cancer.” After chemotherapy didn’t work, Effie Atkins’ only hope was to volunteer for a new clinical trial at the Monash Translation Precinct. After 25 infusions over 17 months, Effie said she began to feel better within herself and the results were better than anyone expected. “My quality of life has been fantastic. I can make plans for the future. I can do whatever I want. I can still travel. I’m a normal person. I don’t call myself a cancer victim right now. During the trial, she has met others with similar stories and she has come to realise that, with more support for clinical trials, there could be many more patients benefitting. So, today, Effie, who says she “can’t achieve this alone” is determined to spread the word and gain the support within the community in the hope of raising $130,000 in 2018. “I have discovered that many more cancer patients could have access to such trials if funds were available to pay for some critical elements not adequately funded from govern-
ment, or through Monash Health, or by drug companies. “This would cover the all-up annual costs of an Oncology Fellow, a clinical scientist position who would be the critical link in supervising the recruitment and treatment of additional trial subjects,” Effie said. “Perhaps, as many as 100 to 150 additional cancer patients might then have the opportunity to enter a trial and many of these, hopefully, would benefit from their participation.” A fund-raising campaign, primarily directed in the Casey area, is now underway. She said a Gatsby Gala Ball would be held in the soon-to-be opened Bunjil Place function rooms on Saturday 14 April, 2018. Leading up to this event will be a High Tea in the Gardens to be held at Wilson Botanic Park on Sunday 19 November and ticket sales are underway. Pedalling 6000 kilometres through Australia’s central desert may not seem like the perfect holiday for some but for tourist couple Annick and Bruno Versoliatto it was “amazing”. Carrying little more than eight litres of water each, some luggage and a tent strapped to the back of their recumbent bikes, the French husband and wife team set out on their journey from Darwin, reaching Port Augusta some three months later. “We are in good condition. If we are to do again, we will do again. It’s good if you want to lose your fat,” Annick said. Mainly staying at campsites, Annick, 60 and Bruno, 68 met Cranbourne South couple, Rex and Asta Sutherland while camping at Kakadu National Park. “They were our neighbour and began to joke with us. Rex told us ‘Oh if you reach Melbourne you will come in my home’. I told him ‘Be careful because we will come’. Now we are here. Very friendly people,” Annick said. Annick and Bruno, who are from a little village named Thoiry in eastern France, shipped their recumbent bikes to Australia in August before undertaking their gruelling challenge. Annick said their cycle along the Stuart Highway was “amazing,” adding the road trains were “very friendly”, allowing them plenty of room when passing. “Everybody told us it’s a very boring road but didn’t think it was boring at all. We like it very much. You put your tent everywhere in the bush and there’s lots of birds everywhere,” she said. “At the beginning we carried 10 litres each but after we understand we don’t need so much, so we reduced to eight litres each. Yes, it was heavy but it was flat so no problem.” “We visited Litchfield and Kakadu (National Parks) then Katherine, the city of Cadel Evans, Alice Springs, Ayres Rock and Kings Canyon, Coober Pedy, then we arrive in Port Augusta.” Annick said they didn’t experience any hiccups in their trek apart from the weight of their luggage causing the spokes on their wheels to break. “They break because we were too heavy. Now we are OK because we lose a lot of weight.” She said they didn’t hit much bad weather except after visiting the 12 Apostles where they were forced to change their route.

Legend tag for a carer
By Brendan Rees Community members dug deep to raise more than $55,000 for the Aiding Casey Education (ACE) Foundation fund-raiser dinner at Cranbourne Turf Club on Saturday 21 October. Donning a stylish hat, 260 people attended the event where a silent and a public auction were held, with all money including the cost of entrance tickets going to the foundation. All money raised will enhance educational opportunities of charter school students. Guests enjoyed an evening of fun entertainment from musicians to comedians, magicians and caricaturists. Framed Francesco Totti memorabilia of the former Italian soccer player sold for $3500 during an auction while the major prize, a camper trailer, went for just under $11,000. ACE Foundation board member Amanda Stapledon said the fund-raiser was an “extravaganza”. “It shows just how important the foundation is for what we’re doing to ensure children get the best educational opportunities possible,” she said. “The ACE Foundation is amazing and was established to help children and youth who fall between the gaps to achieve their best educational ability." ACE Foundation secretary Teresa Muratore said it was a “fabulous night.” She said the funds raised would feed hungry students and provide glasses to young children with impaired vision. “A number of my guests were new this year and kept saying what a great organisation the ACE Foundation is and that they did not realise all the good works that have been achieved over the last few years.”

Fund-raising in the pink By Brendan Rees A Pink Ribbon fund-raiser held at Hampton Park Bowls Club raised more than $3000 in support of breast cancer research. The clubrooms were “bursting at the seams” as 120 ladies attended, throwing their support behind the cause on Thursday 12 October. Hampton Park Bowls Club board chairman Neville Hendrie said the annual fund-raiser was a huge success. “These days are a lot of work, and it is the dedication of our people at the bowling club who have made them so successful.” ‘The ladies are just a wonderful team, small in numbers, who work together without fuss, and do an absolutely amazing job,” he said. “To all our guests who keep coming back year after year, a very big thankyou for your support.” This year celebrates a decade of the club hosting the Pink Ribbon event, bringing the total tally to $16,150 with all proceeds going to Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA). Mr Hendrie said Marita O’Keefe from BCNA was also guest speaker. “The audience was entertained by four of our ladies featuring a NABBA group and later The Ladybugs. The group consisted of Jen Sherry, Janice Collins, Helen Lambert and Gwen Clough,” he said. “Guests joined them in singing, dancing and clapping along with the music.” Mr Hendrie thanked the community and Member for Narre Warren South Judith Graley for their continued support.

Salvos are moving on By Brendan Rees After five years as corps officers for Cranbourne’s Salvation Army, Majors Robert and Vanessa Evans are moving on for an overseas adventure. A farewell meeting was held at the Cranbourne Salvation Army on Sunday 5 November with Mayor Sam Aziz presenting the couple a certificate in recognition of their significant contribution to Cranbourne and the wider community. The couple will be heading to the Solomon Islands to serve as officers in charge, overseeing the existing work in the capital, Honiara, and expanding the Salvation Army’s presence throughout the islands for the next two years. “We’re really looking forward to it. There’s mixed emotions. We’re very sad to leave Cranbourne. We don’t feel our work here is finished yet but we’re very excited about the opportunities ahead,” Major Robert Evans said. Major Evans said he and his wife Vanessa were thankful for the “tremendous support” they had received from the community. “We see our appointment not just through our church but see our appointment to the community. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed the relationships we’ve built in Cranbourne,” he said. Major Evans said changing the lives of people from different backgrounds and cultures was highly rewarding. “We’ve seen transformations happen through people getting jobs or overcoming addictions. We’ve seen people transform through dealing with a lot of emotional baggage. We’ve seen people transform through engaging in a faith experience where they’ve had an encounter with God which has changed their perspectives of themselves and the world around them.” “We’ve played a significant part in helping some asylum seekers get their protection visas and integrate into Cranbourne and become productive parts of our community. When Miles is in a mood By Nick Creely When Devon Meadows star Brad Miles is in the mood to score, there is arguably no other player in the West Gippsland Cricket Association more unstoppable. And in the Panthers’ District Division clash with Tooradin at Glover Reserve on Saturday, Miles not only surpassed previous records, but completely flattened them. The left-handed power hitter smashed his way to an extraordinary 260 - a knock that included 24 fours and 12 sixes - all in just 223 balls, as his side posted an utterly formidable 8/441. That makes it a total of 168 runs scored solely in boundaries. And he was only in the 91 at tea, making it even more mind boggling that only hours later almost tripled his score. It could have been a completely different story, however, with Miles dropped when he was just on six. Miles’ feat is now the highest score in Devon Meadows Cricket Club history and the highest score ever made in the District Division, surpassing Ben Maroney’s 201 against Nyora in the 2009/10 season. From the Panthers’ perspective, it is the highest team score ever made in their first XI, while Miles’s 162-run partnership with allrounder Lucas Carroll (31) is the club’s record for the fifth wicket. Since joining the Panthers for the 2016-'17 season, Miles has scored an incredible 1277 runs at 70.94 - including Twenty20s - from just 20 matches and 21 innings, with three centuries and seven half centuries. was to witness the innings, and how he approached the day as captain. “It wasn’t as tough as you would imagine (fielding),” he said.
“We had a chance that we should’ve taken when he was on six, and he’s a class bat that you don’t give chances to. “He hits the ball clean and hard, it’s actually great to watch. “It was really about trying to stop him scoring, more than getting him out once he got going. He likes to score, so our best chance to get him out was to tie him down and wait for a mistake.” While Miles feasted on the Gulls bowlers in an astonishing display, Latham praised his side for never giving in and keeping the energy up in the field, and said that youngsters such as Mitchell Tharle, Connor O’Riordan and Ned Harrison led the way with their enthusiasm. “Keeping our boys in good spirits was actually pretty easy,” he said. “Often, we talk about these are the types of games that make you who you are. It’s all good to laugh and joke around when you’re flogging sides, but real character is built when you’re on the other end of these innings. “Our boys were in great spirits all day, having a bit of a laugh and I’m really proud of the kids in particular. They kept their heads up and their voice high all the way until the last ball.” Latham said that with players such as Miles, taking the chances when they present them is vital. “(There) wasn’t really a lot to learn from it to be honest, other than to take the chance when a batsman gives one early,” he said. “But our boys toiled hard all day and should be proud, but Brad just showed how good he is. He didn’t give a chance from six until he was on 220.” The Gulls face a daunting task of trying to chase down the record breaking 441 when play resumes on Saturday.
They’re pretty powerful By Russell Bennett It’s the Cranbourne gym where everyday people can achieve the incredible - and on Sunday Iron Strength Sports hosted its annual Pretty and Powerful competition for female powerlifters to show what they’re made of. Held in loving memory of Madi Tait - the sister of one of the strength training club’s great friends, Josh Tait - the competition raised money for both Redkite and the Australian Red Cross Blood Service. The whole mantra of Iron Strength Sports, which is operated by the husband and wife team of Martin and Steph Nguyen, is that anyone can lift and learn to lift and better themselves. “For women it is very empowering - especially in today’s society,” Martin said. “I think for women to see other women lifting it’s quite empowering to know that they’re strong and capable of lifting heavy weights and getting stronger and kicking goals.” The ‘Pretty and Powerful’ concept originated from a Brisbane gym a few years ago as they started running all-female powerlifting competitions. Iron Strength Sports’ competition runs annually and provides local everyday women with the chance to show what they can achieve. “All of the girls get behind each other and it’s a really good day,” Martin said. “It’s competitive, but it’s also very encouraging to see the mateship between all the girls. They all know how hard each of them has worked to get there so it’s good to see.” Iron Strength Sports sprung to life twoand-a-half years ago with a goal to bring to the table a quality product that looked after its members and had their best interests at heart. Kane and Kelly Latham are a local husband and wife team that both train, and compete, at Iron Strength Sports. For Kelly - a mum of two young boys - her powerlifting journey started just seven months ago. On Sunday, she competed in her first competition. “I came into the sport with no powerlifting background, just personal training,” she explained. 26 STAR NEWS

Sent in to bat, Bloods openers Nathan King (54) and Michael Vandort (33) got the home side off to an 82-run opening, setting up the day perfectly for the middle order aggressors. After being 1/95 at tea, and losing two early wickets almost immediately after the break - including the key scalp of former Eagle premiership captain Steve Spoljaric for a quickfire 22, the Bloods were merciless, ploughing almost 200 runs to declare at 5/277 off 70 overs. Dylan Quirk (77 not out) and Jack Sketcher (77) combined for an entertaining 130-run partnership to completely dominate, with the pair combining for 17 fours and three sixes. McCalman is currently the Premier division’s leading run-scorer with 250 at an average of 50 in what is a particularly trying campaign for the Cobras - they’re yet to win a game through their first five rounds and seem locked in a relegation battle with Emerald. But McCalman remains as stoic and focussed as ever at the top of the order - earning the highest of praise from one of the WGCA’s most accomplished players, Kooweerup captain-coach Mark Cooper. “Danners is a star, and more than that he’s a great person,” Cooper said about his Mid Year Cricket Association team mate. “He always plays for the team and he should be in Country Week contention every season. “He’s one of the top five fielders in the competition too, which tends to get overlooked.” Cooper said McCalman’s temperament at the crease allowed him to stand up against any bowling attack - no matter how imposing it may seem. “I’ve got no doubt he could give District (like Vic Premier) cricket a real crack too and stand up in that higher standard,” Cooper said. “He’s got no ego - he just plays. “He’s the type of player you could build a team around and I think he’s a potential leader too because he does set a really good example for the rest of the boys to follow.” Merinda Park Premier skipper Andrew Martin cut straight to the chase when describing just how highly McCalman is rated internally. “He’d be in the top three to five batsmen in the competition,” he said. “He could be a far better player in a better side but what he’s doing in a side that is strug-

Run of wins at an ending CRANBOURNE BOWLS The winning sequence has finally come to an end for both the top Saturday Pennant side and the Ladies Division 1 side, despite good wins from over half of their rinks. The ladies lost to Berwick by six shots, despite winning on two of the three rinks. With rain delaying the game during the day, Cranbourne seemed to lose a little momentum but despite a competitive last-ditched effort to bridge the gap they went down by just six shots. The Saturday number one Pennant side played away at Edithvale and came up against a very good side. However they still came away with four points, with two of its four rinks recording wins despite the large shots deficit. Selector Doug Boggie said after the game that “it is hard to win every game in a season so the loss was not a total surprise, however we need to lift our standard again and move on from this loss.” Ladies Side 1 Division 1 Yvonne Van Der Wees and her rink of Maureen Cameron, Helen Witherden, and Lynne Wood won by three shots while Sue Hudson and her crew of Isobel Partington, Shirley Venville, and Joy McLisky won by one shot. Side 1 Division 2 Cranbourne played away at Edithvale and were soundly defeated on the day. Despite this Skip John McKenna won by five shots and Skip Barry Thomas won by two shots to give Cranbourne four valuable competition points on the day. Side 2 Division 3 Playing at home should have been an advantage but Cranbourne, despite showing good form the previous week was no match for visiting side Dandenong Club who went on to record a large victory. The men’s final started at noon between Chris Barnes and Neville Hendrie with Chris getting off to an eight shot to nothing start. It took Neville 19 ends to get one shot in front and seven ends later scored a three to win by four shots. The last time Christine and Neville won the Club's Singles was nine years ago. It was two for the books By Russell Bennett It was a feat no-one at Kooweerup’s Denhams Road ground on Sunday could remember happening before - two outright victories in as many rounds in the WGCA’s Premier Division. The round-five result for Mark Cooper’s men showcased their ruthless side as they claimed 20 Merinda Park wickets for just 182 runs in a comprehensive smashing that pitted the competition’s best side against one of its biggest battlers. This simply isn’t the Cobras side of recent times that vied for, and competed in, finals year after year. Instead, this is a much more inexperienced group - one taught somewhat of a cricketing lesson by the rampant Demons - 97 and 85 to 1/132 (dec) and 1/52. While the Merinda Park boys struggled to take the game on in the face of some imposing bowling by quicks John Bright (6/29) and Jess Mathers (3/39 and 3/19), the home side had no such trouble with just two Demon wickets falling all game. The result came in the round straight after Kooweerup secured a stunning outright against a disappointing Bulls outfit at Cardinia. Bright was particularly lethal on Saturday and at one stage was on a hat-trick before finishing with a six-wicket haul from his 15 overs. Demons skipper Mark Cooper scored an unbeaten 63 in the first innings and followed that up with 4/11 off 14 overs in the Cobras’ second dig. Lachie Ramage (11 not out), Paul Bright (17) and Mitch Davey (18 not out, including a towering six over the carpark) were the only three Kooweerup batsmen needed in their second innings. “In both of our last two games we’ve lost the toss and bowled first, and things have just fallen in place,” Cooper said of his side’s consecutive outright wins.

By Nick Creely Casey-South Melbourne captain Lachlan Sperling is the first to admit that his side has severely under-performed in its winless start to the season, but will continue to back his team in to find a way to break out of a form slump that threatens to not only derail the season, but end it. After his side put up a more competitive performance in a five-wicket loss to Geelong on Saturday at Casey Fields, with young debutants Austin Heldt and Jonah Serong impressing, Sperling said despite the disappointment, there was plenty to take out of the game. “(There was) definitely more positive signs as a group, still not the result we were after but we showed a lot more fight despite scoring a sub-par total,” he said. The Swans were sent in to bat on a tough batting deck, and despite starting steadily, only managed to post 9/169 off their 50 overs. Heldt (31) at the top of the order was particularly impressive - particularly square of the wicket - and managed to survive a nasty spell by Cats’ spearhead Dom McGlinchey (2/23) to get the 19-year-old’s Premier career off on the right foot. He was ably backed up by Chris Benedek (34), who continued his strong form in the middle order, while Dylan Hadfield (35) and Brendan Rose (26) helped guide the Swans to a competitive total after being 5/70 midway through the innings. Casey spearhead Nathan Lambden (2/42) picked up the key scalp of Tim Ludeman caught behind for a duck to get the home side off to a perfect start, but a 74-run partnership between skipper Eamonn Vines (74) and Josh McDonald (61) saw the Cats climb into a winning position. Serong, the 16-year-old spinner from Longwarry, was brilliant on debut, using his flight and variations perfectly to finish with 2/24 as the Swans mounted a late comeback in the middle stages, but ultimately the Cats found the winning runs five wickets down in the 40th over. Simpson acknowledged that “we didn’t make as many runs as we wanted to, or probably should have”. A 51-run stand late in the innings between Pat Lawson (36) and Nick Sadler (23) played a key role in the Cougars advancing past 200, but Simpson - who top-scored with 48 before falling to Zac Chaplin - said his side should probably have made around the 250 mark given their start. “But 200, while it’s not a big score, still gives our bowlers a real chance this week,” he said. Emerald, meanwhile, will be looking to stave off outright defeat when they resume their clash with Cardinia at home this week. The Bombers were rolled for just 82 in their first innings with Kallan Braid-Ball claiming 6/56 from his 18 overs in the face of some attimes questionable shot selection. Emerald’s batsmen took the game on at stages but just didn’t have the application to stave off the likes of Braid-Ball, Matt Welsh (2/6 from nine overs) and Dwayne Doig (2/18 from nine). Bombers left-armer Trent Rolfs was particularly impressive in the Bulls’ reply, snaring 4/50 from his 14 overs, but the visitors ultimately reached 6/176 off the final 44 overs of the day’s play off the back of some strong hitting from Te Ahu Davis (38 not out) and Pat Nolen (46). The Bulls could well declare early on day two in search of outright points that could prove vital in their push for the finals later in the season. In the other game of Round 5, the Seagulls rolled through Upper Beaconsfield for just 103 in 49 overs at Tooradin with Kade Burns (2/31), Russell Lehman (2/26), Josh Lownds (2/3) and Bailey Lownds (2/7) all snaring two wickets apiece. It’s not ideal that we’re 0-5 but we know there are a lot of points on offer over the next three weeks where we can start pegging our season back on track. “We know Frankston has a very talented side and we will have to be at our best to knock them off. “We know 0-5 isn’t ideal but we will embrace the challenge to put the results on the board to get our season back on track.”

With sleek and sporty looks, the new Renault sedan plays down the performance side of its hothatch siblings. While the Zen model misses out on mood LED lighting and a standard Multidrive experience, there is plenty of design features to put occupants at ease. The dashboard is sleek with a non-scratch soft-touch finish while the steering wheel can be optioned with a rich Nappa full grain leather wrap. Renault’s own R-Link 2 multimedia system controls multiple functions via a seven-inch landscape touchscreen (a larger 8.7-inch tabletstyle screen in the Intens model). R-Link 2 allows the choice of personal home screens, varying the size and position of maps, radio, contacts, navigation and other functions. As with a smartphone or computer, the Megane Sedan’s home screen can be adjusted to prioritise information.
Up to six user profiles are available, so multiple drivers can have the system pre-set to their preferences. Turbocharging and fuel injection give the engine the capability of 97 kW (130 hp) at 5500 rpm and 205 Nm from 2000 rpm, the same performance, says the maker, as a two-litre naturally aspirated motor. The seven-speed Efficient Dual Clutch automatic transmission combines the comfort of an automatic and responsiveness of a manual gearbox. Zen driver and front passenger enjoy the benefit of adaptive and lateral pelvis and chestlevel airbags, while front and rear curtain airbags are included for added safety. Active safety features include electronic stability control, ABS anti-lock braking, emergency brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution
and hill start assist. The higher-spec Intens model offers standard Multi-Sense personalised driver modes and interior ambience LED lighting with five settings to match the mood. The first thing to be said about the Megane sedan is how quiet the engine is at idle - silent almost, requiring a quick look at the tacho to see if it’s even running. Even under hard driving the engine manages to keep the noise down. That’s not the only pleasant surprise. A hands-free card has the doors unlocking and locking automatically while the boot lid opens via a kick motion under the rear bumper or by a button on the card. This opens up an expansive 503 litres of boot space, which with the 60:40 split rear bench seat folded frees up to 987 litres of loading space over almost two metres in length. The seating is said to suit five adults, but four would be more comfortable on a longer journey. Leg room in the rear is good, while head room is surprisingly satisfactory considering the sleek coupe-style slope of the roof. As mentioned, the turbo-charged technology of the engine errs on the side of economy rather than out-and-out performance, the Megane moving off the mark at a somewhat steady pace. In comparison to the performance-based Megane hatch with which it was born and bred, the new sedan is a stylish, premium packaged, practical vehicle, which is, once the steepish initial outlay is overcome, economical to live with. It comes to Australia in two models - Zen and Intens - priced from $27,490 and $31,990 respectively, plus on road costs and both featuring Renault’s seven-speed Efficient dual-clutch transmission. Power comes from a 2.0-litre Energy TCe 130 turbocharged petrol engine, the ‘130’ referring to the horsepower (97 kW) it puts out. The emphasised horizontal rear light treatment almost meets in the middle, giving the sedan breadth to its looks from behind. In profile the Megane sedan takes on the sleek form usually associated with a two-door sports coupe, its flared wheel arches adding to the effect wrapping around the latest design 16inch Silverline alloy wheels.
