Several organisations, businesses and groups from around the Dandenong Ranges have been nominated as finalists in the Fire Awareness Awards.

First developed and launched in 1983 by Forest Fire Management Victoria, Metropolitan Fire Brigade and Country Fire Authority, the awards are used to encourage and acknowledge local community programs that help reduce the effects of fire in Victoria.

Among the 200 applicants, five from the Dandenong Ranges were included in the list of finalists released on 31 October.

They included the Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre in Cockatoo, Funtime Storytime by Eastern Regional Libraries and Ferntree Gully CFA, along with Upper Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade’s local preparedness videos.

Also included in the list was last year's Living with Bushfire Community Conference - led

by Yarra Ranges Council and the Municipal Fire Management Planning Committee.

The Mail News Group spoke to Sue Wooton, co-creator of the Funtime Storytime initiative a fire awareness program run by Ferntree Gully CFA and Ferntree Gully Library.

The Funtime Storytime program is one of the finalists and Sue said that she and Graham Crichton from the Ferntree Gully CFA were “very, very proud” of what they had accomplished.

“Over the years we’ve developed it and tried to make it more a learning thing on two counts the literacy point of view, and also promoting fire safety,” she said.

“We write our own stories - fire stories that we read and act out.”

One story includes what happens when you leave cooking unattended on the stove and what to do if a fire breaks out.”

Over 1000 people have come to enjoy the sessions played out by Graham and Sue, along with Captain Koala and The Basin CFA member April who also perform a fire safety pantomime.

The sessions are all about learning fire safety and are aimed at younger children, from ages one to six.

Sue said incorporating the sessions ensured the message was able to cross a number of limitations, including those in the community who may have difficulty reading.

The Fire Awareness Award winners will be announced and awards presented on Monday 4 December.

Mercy gets $2 million funds boost

The focus might be on metropolitan racing this week, but two Yarra Ranges’ ladies are showing country racing enthusiasts can mix it with the best.

Fashion judge Charlotte Hall, from Yarra Glen, and fashions on the field contestant Brooke Walter, from Mount Evelyn, have been turning heads amid the ever-popular Melbourne Spring Carnival.

Walter so much so that she took out first place in the coveted fashions on the field event at this year’s Cox Plate.

On a day where champion mare Winx stole the show, Walter wasn’t far behind, with the recent Bachelor of Oral Health graduate awarded the top prize.

Walter said she loved nothing more than a day out at the races.

“I won Miss Emirates at Flemington when I was just 14, and it’s kind of rolled on from there,” she said.

“Racing is a great social event, a great atmosphere and I enjoy it.”

Walter said there was no secret to her elevation to the dais, just that she was not fazed whether she followed fashion trends or not.

“You can never pick it, so I just try to wear what I’m confident in and what’s appropriate for the weather,” she said.

While Walter's racing star is seemingly on the rise, one already well-established is Charlotte Hall’s, who had the pleasure of judging on the day.

Hall comes from a racing family and lives close to the Yarra Glen Racecourse.

Her father is involved in the sport, with her great uncle racing royalty, after he trained Kiwi to the Melbourne Cup in 1983.

Hall agreed with Walter's sentiment that there is no right way to select an award-winning outfit.

“We’re seeing a lot more clashes of colour - a lot of pink and red clashes - which is exciting and much more fun for the judges. Black isn’t necessarily the new black,” she said.

Mount Lilydale Mercy College received a welcome $2 million funding boost on Friday 27 October, with former student and Monbulk MP present to make the announcement.

The Catholic co-educational college caters for students from Years 7 to 12, with the funds supporting the first stage of the school’s upgrade.

This will include a new VCE Learning Commons building, featuring a new senior library and two levels of general purpose classrooms.

Mr Merlino said the funding boost represented a major coup for the region.

“It was wonderful to return to my old school to announce this funding boost and chat to teachers and students about what it will mean for them,” he said.

“Mount Lilydale Mercy College has great teachers and a welcoming, inclusive environment, and I’m sure they will take full advantage of these improvements.”

The second stage of the project will involve the construction of a new three-level classroom block, staff offices and associated spaces.

The existing library will be refurbished to provide a new visual arts hub.

The new learning spaces will be of enormous benefit, because it allows students to move through Years 10 to 12 at their own pace.

The college is one of many Victorian schools benefiting from the Victorian Government’s $120 million Capital Funding Program for Non-government Schools.

Hope for NDIS in rollout Yarra Ranges is the latest Victorian region to undergo change in how disability services are accessed, with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) rolling out in the area this month.

Though only in the initial stages, the NDIS, which came into effect on Wednesday 1 November, aims to provide a more personal, “face-toface” support service for residents living with a permanent disability.

NDIS providers in the Yarra Ranges have accepted there will be teething problems, particularly in the early months, but are confident the rollout will result in positive change.

One of the major benefits is the choice offered to service-users, who will now have a greater say in how their allocated funds are used.

Melba Support Services chief executive officer, Glenn Foard, said the NDIS would be worth the wait.

“We’ve campaigned for it ... we recognised the present system wasn’t working as well as it should, so we’re very excited by the rollout,” Mr Foard said.

“The NDIS gives more control to the individual, choice in how the funds allocated to them is used for their support. This is well overdue and will ensure individuals receive reasonable and necessary support. It represents a huge step forward.”

Mr Foard said Melba and NDIS registered providers in the Yarra Ranges had been busy preparing service-users for the change, with many information sessions being conducted.

He estimated it would take about six months for the initial transition phase to be completed.

“Many individuals will be developing and preparing their first plan. So spreading information is crucial in the early rollout phase,” he said.

“It will take a lot of work and time, but we are confident it will provide fundamental support.”

Mr Foard added there are already successful case studies within the Yarra Ranges, due to early rollout initiatives.

Jane Prentice, the Victorian Assistant Minister for Disability Services, said the roll-out of the NDIS in the Outer East region was an important

milestone for people with a disability, their families, carers and the broader local community.

“The NDIS will also generate jobs and local investment, which will ensure people with disability have the assistance they need to help them achieve their goals,” Mrs Prentice said.

“The NDIS is one of the largest social policy reforms in Australia’s history, it is already empowering more than 15,000 Victorians with disability, helping them to fulfil their goals and participate in community life.”

By July 2019, it is estimated that 105,000 Victorians will have transitioned to the scheme.

This includes 76,000 clients from the existing Victorian specialist disability and mainstream systems.

The number of people living with disability receiving support in the Outer East Melbourne (Knox, Maroondah and the Yarra Ranges) area is expected to grow from 5700 to 7700 by 2019.

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is the independent agency responsible for implementing the NDIS.

Other local service providers include the Ferntree Gully-based Knoxbrooke.

Meanwhile, Yarra Ranges Council will not be an NDIS provider, but will continue to provide the Home and Community Care (HACC) program, which provides domestic assistance, personal care, respite care, meals on wheels and other services, while State Government funding continues.

Solar power milestone celebrated

By Derek Schlennstedt Cardinia Shire has celebrated its 1000th solar panel in the municipality, nine years after it installed a 2kw solar electricity system at Emerald Library.

The 1000th panel, also placed at Emerald Library, is now part of 22.8kW system, contributing towards exceeding 250kW of installed capacity across 15 sites in the Cardinia Shire.

The shire has saved more than $70,000 per annum in energy costs on council buildings.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Brett Owen said it was a great contribution, and he was proud to be mayor of a council so committed to reducing its carbon footprint.

“We, as a council, are aiming to achieve zero net emissions for council operations and a 36 per capita reduction in community emission by 2024,” Mr Owen said.

“Council has embraced solar electricity, and now we have currently 14 systems across 14 building across our shire.”

Mr Owen also harked back to the early days of solar, when in 2008 Emerald Library was the first building in the council area to receive a solar system - much due to the strong lobbying by Peter Cook, from the Dandenong Ranges Renewable Energy Association.

“Council’s first solar energy system was here, at the Emerald Library back in 2008 ... it is quite fitting that we are relaunching a new system and

celebrating the 1000th solar panel in Cardinia Shire,” Mr Owen said.

“The 1000th panel is right above us, and council now has more than 260kw in solar electricity systems at council sites.”

Overall, the solar systems are achieving an annual reduction in emission of 364 tonnes of carbon dioxide - the same emissions as produced by 91 average cars.

Peter Cook, who was heavily involved in getting the first system, said that since operating, the new solar system has accounted for about 53 per cent of the library’s power.

Emerald Library also received a TV unit that shows the percentage of power output which the new solar system produces.

P-plater’s ‘lucky’ tangle with tree

By Derek Schlennstedt A P-plater was “lucky to be alive“ said Emerald Acting Sergeant Marcus Coolen, following a serious crash this morning on Macclesfield Road.

About 6.30am a local Macclesfield male, lost control of his Toyota Hilux along Macclesfield Road before sliding down an embankment and colliding with a tree.

The driver was travelling towards Emerald, and police believe wet driving conditions may have been a factor in the resulting crash.

Macclesfield road was closed from Avon Road for two hours, with emergency services crews working to free the man from the wreckage.

“The driver was quite firmly trapped, and had to take the roof off ... took quite some time,” Macclesfield CFA captain Sharon Merritt said.

Ambulance Victoria reported the teenage male was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with no significant injuries.

Nostalgic feel to film

By Effie Caloutas Belgrave’s Cameo Theatre is set to host a local film release, with a special showing of ‘Comet Kids’ on Saturday 18 November.

The brainchild of Pakenham-based independent filmmaker Glenn Triggs, the family adventure film is based around six friends who find a piece of passing comet.

The period-based film is set in the characters’ quaint hometown in the 1950s.

Triggs said he hoped to pay homage to some classics through the film.

“We spent three years making this film and I believe it can sit on the same shelf as the films that inspired it in the first place, ‘The Goonies’ and ‘Stand by Me’.

“The film is full of emotion, laughs, danger, adventure and fun.”

The nostalgic feel of the film is enhanced by many blasts from the past, including appearances

from 1980s hit singer Marty Rhone, Reg Gorman from ‘The Sullivans’, and Tiriel Mora from ‘The Castle’.

Triggs, himself, has been praised for recreating the atmosphere, look and innocence of the 1950s.

In addition to the Cameo showing, ‘Comet Kids’ is set to be released in cinemas nationwide, but the film-maker said it was great to have it shown locally.

Triggs said he loved all aspects of making films.

“The last two features, ‘41’ and ‘Apocalyptic’, have been released worldwide and seen by millions of people,” he said.

“Film making ... tickles my creative brain like no other medium. From script-writing to editing, each step along the way brings challenges and excitement, as nothing slowly forms into something incredible.”

Actors within the film have also enjoyed the roles, including Rhone who plays Cliff, the villain in the film.

Rhone said he really liked the look of the film, after attending a cast and crew screening.

“Some great locations outside of Melbourne and in rural Victoria were chosen and the cinematography of Bernard Winter is exceptional and gives the film a great look,” he said.

Rhone said he enjoyed playing the villain, Cliff.

“I had a lot of fun playing the villain. It was my first film playing the bad guy and it allowed me to explore my dark side and provided more character personality options,” he said.

The film will be released on DVD through Pinnacle Film on Wednesday 20 December.

Remembrance Day services details in the hills

Services honour all those who have died in war, but this year will especially reflect on significant anniversaries including the centenary of Beersheba in WW1 and the 75-year anniversaries of El Alamein and the Kokoda Campaign in WW2.

Beersheba was the scene of an historic charge by the 4th Light Horse Brigade on 31 October.

The Light Horsemen of the 4th and 12th Regiments charged the Turkish trenches in a surprise attack that carried them through the Turkish defences.

Vital water supplies were saved and over 1000 Turkish prisoners were taken.

El Alamein was one of the decisive battles of World War 2. The main battle was fought from

23 October to 5 November 1942 when the British Eighth Army, which included the Australian Ninth Division, launched a major offensive against German and Italian forces.

This year also marks the 75th anniversary of the Kokoda Campaign.

Remembrance Day is a day to pause and remember those who gave their lives and one way in which this will be honoured is by the laying of poppies and reciting of the poem “In Flanders Fields”.

Monbulk Monbulk RSL will hold a Remembrance Day service from 10.45am in the front court. The service will be followed by morning tea.

Upwey - Belgrave Upwey-Belgrave RSL will hold a Remembrance Day service from 10.45am at the Belgrave War memorial on Burwood Road and Wattle Avenue, Belgrave. The service will be followed by morning tea at the Belgrave-Tecoma RSL.

Cockatoo Cockatoo RSL will hold a Remembrance Day service from 10.45am at the Cockatoo RSL. The service will be followed by morning tea at the clubhouse, with a barbecue.

Emerald Emerald RSL will hold a Remembrance Day service from 10.30am at Cenotaph in Emerald.

There will also be an invitation to remember the 32 WW1 soldiers from Emerald by doing a guided tour of the Anzac Walk.

Views on council upgrade

By Peter Douglas The Yarra Ranges community now has the chance to have its say on the proposed $28 million redevelopment of its council’s offices.

With advertising starting, written submissions to council are being sought regarding the upcoming Lilydale Civic Centre planning application.

The redevelopment proposal came after an extensive feasibility study conducted in 2015.

The then-council endorsed the study after plans to relocate to the former Swinburne site in Lilydale fell over.

The proposal aims to address the identified deficiencies of the building including an outdated design, a lack of disability access and an energy inefficient set-up due to a “patchwork” of buildings being used.

The infrastructure has been described as being from “the beginning of time”, with ongoing issues including termite and water damage.

Yarra Ranges chief executive officer, Glenn Patterson, has described the building as “substandard” and said a redeveloped civic centre would allow the council to meet its current and future needs.

“The project will provide the opportunity to

consolidate all employees on one site, removing the need for an externally leased premises,” Mr Patterson said when the feasibility study won council support in mid-2015.

For ratepayers to view the proposal, they first need to visit council’s ePlanning service at https://eplanning.yarraranges.vic.gov.au.

After selecting the ‘Property’ search field and searching for ‘15 Anderson Street, Lilydale’ - residents can view the documents and follow prompts to make a submission.

Submissions are only permitted during the advertising period, which started on Thursday 26 October and finishes on Tuesday 21 November.

After the advertising period finishes, council will evaluate the submissions before making a final decision on the application at a future council meeting.

Earlier this year, council embarked on an extensive six-week community consultation process for the public space component of the Civic Centre Redevelopment.

Yarra Ranges Council said more than 1600 people gave face-to-face feedback.

in Cambodia.

Dakota supported the school and orphanage by raising more than $150 through busking and saving coins at home.

“Dakota is extraordinarily aware of the suffering of others and how her effort and kindness can make a difference,” Ms McMahon said.

The Fred Hollows Humanity Award began in the ACT in 2012 before expanding into Victoria last year.

This year it became a truly national initiative with 420 children nominated across the country, including 81 students from Victoria.

By Derek Schlennstedt After two years of planning, students with a learning or physical disability will have a new inclusion building to work from at Emerald Secondary College.

The school held an official opening on Tuesday 31 October, with students, staff and community members taking part in a Wurundjeri smoking ceremony before taking a tour of the new inclusion building. Jodie Doble, principal of Emerald Secondary College said the new building was a testament to the hard work of students, parents and the local community.

“There is an African proverb that it takes a village to raise a child, and it certainly has taken the whole Emerald community to make sure we have got exactly what we want for our children and for their future,” she said at the opening.

Much of the landscaping surrounding the inclusion centre came from VCAL students whose final year project was to construct a garden area for students to enjoy.

Many of the tools and plants used for the space also came from local Emerald businesses, including Mitre 10 and Emerald co-op.

Inside, the building has several rooms including a sensory room, interview room, meeting room and a physio room run by Emerald Hills Physiotherapy.

“Inside we do have a sensory room, intervention rooms, small group meeting rooms, conference room, counselling room, and multi-purpose rooms that we can use for support programs as well as learning and education programs ... it really is a fabulous facility,” she said before taking staff and students on a tour.

Though the road to the facility's construction hasn’t been without its problems, and following James Merlino’s $1.5 million funding announcement in the 2015-'16 budget, there were worries from parents about the future layout.

The new inclusion hub was originally part of a funding promise by Mr Merlino which would replace old school portables where integration students took part in specialised education programs. Ms Doble said that the new building could not have been done without the help of local community groups and businesses.

“It certainly has taken the whole Emerald community to make sure we have got exactly what we want for our children and for their future,” she said.

“It’s an absolutely amazing facility and I’m very proud of the inclusion leader and all staff.”

I note with interest that (Yarra Ranges) Council has commenced widening works on the western end of Old Emerald Road, Monbulk (OER), from McAllister Road to Monbulk-Silvan Road.

As with the installation of new footpaths and extensive drainage works, these are for the benefit of those attending the new soccer centre.

As I see it, OER is currently divided into a ‘have’ section and a ‘have not’.

The ‘have’ section is a made road with drainage and culverts; it will now have further enhancements, with widening and new bitumen.

For those less fortunate ratepayers, the ‘have not’ section is a dangerous, unmade road.

Its deep gouges double as its drainage channels; they get deeper with each downpour and narrow the road even further. Driveway entrances are washed away, as there are no culverts.

Water lies across the road for weeks at a time after a downpour, creating more potholes.

During the recent few days of warmer weather, the ‘have not’ ratepayers choked in endless thick clouds of dust kicked up by the trucks and increased vehicle numbers now using the road.

It is difficult to choose between which is worse: the caking dust and legendary corrugations, or the terrible mud-filled potholes.

To heap upon the misery, the open speed limit of 100km/h - compared to 60km/h in the ‘have’ section - means that we must also dodge those drivers that take the open speed limit as a challenge or an invitation. It is a road notorious for accidents, including one fatal. You may ask why anyone would willingly drive along the ‘have not’ section, but it is now the route dictated by GPS and Google when travelling from Emerald and surrounds to the soccer centre, because it is the shortest and quickest route. Council has flatly refused to make ‘any’ improvements to the unmade section of OER; council previously indicated that if it were to, ratepayers would be hit with a special charge scheme of about $18,000 per house.

Why is there such inequality between ratepayers for two parts of the same road?

Have the ratepayers in the ‘have’ section been levied with a special charge scheme for all of their new road improvements?

I expect not.

Olinda’s dose of fresh park Olinda residents are invited to join the Parks Victoria team for a Community Open Day on Saturday 18 November at the former Olinda Golf Course site.

The open day is an opportunity for residents to become involved in the Olinda Precinct Project, which will transform the site into 34 hectares of community parklands.

This family-friendly event will include a range of displays and activities for people of all ages to enjoy.

Take a native seedling home, kick the footy with the Olinda Ferny Creek Junior Football Club, check out the fascinating wildlife displays or take a look at the impressive fire trucks on show.

Train to Busan is a South Korean horror-thriller film following a group of people stuck on a moving train with a horde of the undead, as a zombie outbreak sweeps the nation.

Almost every aspect of Train to Busan is pitch-perfect, from the writing to the tension and carnage.

Train to Busan generates an intense feeling of unease from its first moments, and while it mostly takes place in well-lit train carriages, the film is deeply suspenseful due to the relentless savagery of the zombies and how attached we become to its characters.

Several of the main characters embody certain archetypes, including the workaholic father, the boorish husband and the selfish businessman, but all of them have engaging depth and distinctive personality beyond their basic templates, and they all change or grow in some tangible way.

Every plan or action, while charged with fear and desperation, feels logical, and the zombies operate on clear rules that the characters learn convincingly.

The film also makes a poignant statement on paranoia, and how crisis can degrade - or reaffirm - our humanity.

The violence is gory but not excessive, and the action scenes are superbly structured, with clear sense of landmarks and where every entity is coming from in each scene.

Train to Busan is a riveting, finely-crafted experience that further demonstrates what a powerhouse South Korea has become in the dark thriller genre.

One of Australia’s most exciting musicians, Josh Pyke, will soon bid farewell to the music scene through a series of performances, including at the Sooki Lounge on Friday 8 December.

Earlier this year, Pyke announced his 10 Years of Memories and Dust regional tour, alongside the news Pyke will hang up his guitar and go on hiatus from the end of 2017.

In what may be one of the last opportunities to see Pyke live, at least for the foreseeable future, he will perform one of his most popular releases in full, ‘Memories and Dust’.

While not completely signing off from creative duties, Pyke told the ‘Mail’ it was time to freshen up and follow new creative ventures.

“This tour feels right ... it’s like I’ve gone a full circle since the release of Memories and Dust,” Pyke said.

“I’m so grateful for the support I’ve had since I started, but now I’ve got a clear horizon ... I want to follow other creative outlets and that still takes time.”

Chiefly among these will be working with other musicians, both in a creative sense and a mentorship role.

In recent times, through his Josh Pyke Partnership organisation, he has helped mentor the likes of Gordi, who is presently impressing audiences nationwide.

“When I was coming through, I worked with John Butler, and I learned a lot from many along the way, too. Now I can give some of that back,” he said.

Wandin unable to prevail

By Chris Anderson YARRA VALLEY CRICKET ASSOCIATION Despite cold conditions and persistent Friday night rains, cricket still surged forward across the Yarra Valley for another uninterrupted day of delightful cricket.

In the newly structured top grade, the league saw the third instalment of the Strachan Shield/ Finger Trophy crossover games.

With the untimely passing of Don Strachan, undoubtedly Yarra Valley Cricket Association royalty, it was great to see cricket played in great spirit, with some close results a feature.

Unfortunately, Wandin was unable to salute in tribute of their legend, but their spirit was certainly there as they found the going tough on the road against competition leaders Mount Evelyn.

Mount Evelyn batted first and from the outset they had the whip handle, courtesy of another fine opening partnership from emerging stars Jesse Fraser and Daniel Giblin.

Fraser was superb as the mainstay of the innings as he recorded a memorable maiden century.

His partners came and went, as they didn’t have the discipline to capitalise on a string of starts, but Fraser remained firm and dominated his team’s score of 252 with a brilliant 130.

The Wandin bowlers toiled hard, and despite the large score, their persistence netted the 10 wickets.

Young leg-spinner Jamie Elliott was the main wicket taker with 3/71.

The total was always going to be difficult to chase, and that it proved to be.

Some lusty blows from James Freeman on his way to a half century frustrated the home team, but with little sustained support from the other end the task proved too great.

With the medium pace bowlers having little success, spinner Jon Williams proved to be the game breaker with the tidy haul of 5/28 to finish the contest off and lead his team to a comprehensive 128-run victory.

Defending champions Warburton-Millgrove seem to be finding their feet again after some early season wobbles.

The Burras comfortably accounted for Gruyere in the battle of last season’s best with the Strachan Shield champs taking on the Finger Trophy premiers.

The gap between the two competitions has proven to be quite close; but at the top end, Gruyere found it tough to match Warburton-Millgrove’s depth.

Batting first, the Scorpion found it tough to build significant partnerships against a relentless Burras attack.

The Burras pose threats with both their pace and spin, and this again on show.

Experienced spinner Adam Humphrey rarely gives a batsman an inch and again he suffocated the opposition with 3/16, while David Lever’s control of the swinging ball make him a danger

for any opposition.

Eventually, an undermanned Gruyere succumbed for 81.

The chase proved to hold no fears for the Burras as they chased down the with the loss of only two wickets.

Sean Humphrey has proved to b a great acquisition for the Burras as he remained unbeaten on 45.

Next week sees an intriguing grand final rematch between the in-form Mount Evelyn and the dangerous Warburton-Millgrove.

A contest that both players and supporters will look forward to.

As has been the case in the other two crossover rounds, the Finger Trophy teams have proven the gap is narrow between the competitions with the second tier teams claiming a top tier scalp in each of the previous rounds.

This time it was Woori Yallock who proved that the departure of some big time players over the off season hasn’t dented their finals aspirations with a tight victory against Seville.

Batting first, the Tigers were able to post a reasonable total of 9/149 on the back of consistent contributions throughout their innings.

Experience at the top proved to be a guiding light as Cal Ferguson (51) and Mick Dwyer (24) gave their team a platform to build on.

Seville captain Matt Hadlum (3/29) was again his team’s best bowler as his wickets kept things in check for the visitors whilst he was well supported by Daniel Healy (2/22).

Seville gave the chase a fair shake and always had the score moving at the required rate, but regular wickets continually had them under the pump.

Without a significant partnership, the total wasn’t given sufficient chance to grow.

Ferguson capped off a great game capturing 4/29, and with the support of Adam Dunn (3/43), they were able to hold Seville at bay to record an important 25-run victory.

Yarra Glen tasted the bitterness of defeat for the first time this season last week, and a Round 5 meeting against in-form neighbours Coldstream set up an interesting contest.

Yarra Glen batted first, and led by captain David Brambilla’s impressive unbeaten 65, they were able to post a more than acceptable 6/146 at a venue notoriously hard to score quickly at.

Supported by Andy Cowan (37), Brambilla’s half century was the key to the River Pigs’ innings; it was challenged by an excellent spell of disciplined bowling from the evergreen Leam Doughty who netted 4/45.

The home team battled to spark their innings in return as Richard Ellisdon (3/21) matched Doughty’s tidy spell.

In the end, Doughty (35) played a line hand for the Crocs as limited contributions with both bat and ball from his teammates consigned them to a 28-run loss.

Perhaps a ‘what could’ve been’ moment for

Coldstream as they were close enough if good enough.

For Yarra Glen, their promising start to the season continues as they start to build a platform from which finals could be a real possibility in their second year back in the top tier.

Yarra Junction also played themselves back into the winners circle, but they did it the hard way against Hoddles Creek.

The Eagles batted first, and they stumbled along without any great certainty.

Pat Ford (34) and Andy Wear (26) offered some substance to the innings, but like their teammates they were unable to capitalise against some tidy Wombat bowlers.

Will Trotter has proven to be a trump card with the new ball with his consistent approach proving difficult for opponents.

His five wicket haul ensured the Eagles would find it difficult to kick away, and along with his team-mates, they were able to restrict the home side to a below par 120.

Unfortunately for the visitors, they found the going just as tough as their opposition.

Playing against his old side, Nick Bark (2/19) was able to tighten the screws on the Wombats, while Wear (2/11) was also miserly.

With no batsman scoring over 14, the Wombats were suffocated into submission by a gritty Eagles bowling outfit.

The Eagles will be well pleased with their fight and a Round 6 clash against Yarra Glen will give a good insight into how much each of these teams have improved.

For the Wombats, a missed opportunity to claim a Strachan Shield scalp.

In the final match-up, Healesville proved too strong for Launching Place.

Launching Place batted first and after Dermott Fry (3/15) made some early inroads into the batting line up, their innings gathered momentum courtesy of a combination of youth and experience.

Young-gun Max Bradley (30) is proving he is capable of standing up to the big boys with an impressive showing, whilst stalwart Stuart Parker (30) proved to be a valuable ally.

The pair put on a partnership of 71 before their team’s batting effort was quickly put into a tailspin when their innings as looking to blossom.

Scott Hamer (2/18) removed the pair, then a devastating hat-trick from James Shambrook (4/13) quickly saw the innings put to a halt closing at 115.

In recent weeks, Brenton Damrow and Scott Hamer have established a useful partnership at the top for the Bloods, and the combination again proved important in the run chase.

Hamer’s half century ensured the home team wouldn’t be challenged as they raced to a seven wicket victory in the 25th over.

Lochie Winter-Annette (2/18) gave the visitors something to cheer about with a couple of wickets, but his efforts were forlorn in defeat.

Monbulk hosted St John’s-Tecoma in a doubleheader Twenty20 match.

No other junior or senior matches were played this weekend due to the Melbourne Cup. The seconds won back-to-back games for the first time in a while.

Batting first, Monbulk made 5/148 from their 20 overs, thanks largely to a match-winning opening partnership between Aaron Bermingham and Matt Neal.

They then restricted St John’s to 5/121 with a great team performance with the ball and in the field, with Josh Rak the pick of the bowlers with 2/18 from his four overs.

The seniors remain undefeated after an exciting last-over win.

Chasing St John’s-Tecoma’s 6/159, Aaron Powell hit a six with a ball to spare to win the match.

Man of the match, Powelly, finished on 31 not out and took 3/22.

A 70-run opening stand between Brodie Emmett and Brian Martin set up the run chase.

All teams back on board next weekend with the trivia night the following weekend - Saturday 18 November. Book it in for a fun night.

Yarra Ranges Athletics had 22 athletes compete over the three days.

Georgia Laven (800m and 1500m) and Tayleb Willis (200m hurdles) were gold medal winners in their respective events.

Other medals were won by Lily Peacock (800m), Sam Norton (1500m), Zane Wheeler (high jump), Tayleb Willis (100 hurdle), Harry Norman (800m) and Mitch Mullens (800m).

MONBULK BOWLS THE Saturday Division 2 Monbulk 1 team had its second victory in a row with a convincing win at home against Mooroolbark, winning three rinks with a final score of 85 to 63.

Eric Markham’s rink won by 20 shots 29 to 9.

Andrew Bell won by two shots 20 to 18, Richard Cookson’s rink won by three shots 20 to 17.

Brian Smith’s rink just went down on the final bowl 16 to 18.

Monbulk’s Tuesday Division 2 side came up against a strong Ringwood combination away from home and lost by 31 shots 78 to 47.

Peter Koomen’s rink continued on their winning way coming out in front by six shots 25 to 19.

Eric Markham’s rink went down convincingly 8 to 32 and Jenny Holmes went down 14 to 27.

The Division 3 side played Eastwood Golf at home and won comfortably 79 to 44.

Eric Furby won down by seven shots, Peter Francis won by 12 shots and Graeme Goller had the biggest win of the day by 16 shots 30 to 14.

The Division 4 side also travelled to Churchill Waverley and went down by 46 shots 39 to 85.

Ray Pike had a tie on his rink, Lorraine McLaren went down by 11 shots and Rosina King lost by 35 shots.

Motoring Creativity in the concept Seven Toyota concept cars just unveiled reveal a dynamic future of desirable vehicles offering mobility for everyone, including cars that will drive themselves and alternative powertrains that rely on renewable energy.

The seven concepts confirm that future Toyota owners will be offered stylish vehicles including a sports car, a premium performance sedan, a flexible off-roader and innovative vehicles that can be operated regardless of a person’s driving ability.

Toyota’s show cars present a significant step towards sustainable mobility with fuel-cell and battery-electric powertrains as well as advances in Toyota’s existing hybrid and conventional engine technologies.

“Picking the safest vehicle possible should be every driver’s first consideration, and our Used Car Safety Ratings gives buyers the information they need to make this decision,” Mr Case said.

Used cars can offer great value, particularly for those on low budgets who can’t afford showroom expenses.

But not all used cars are principally safe - in fact, a driver in the worst rated vehicle in this year’s Used Car Safety Ratings is 10 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured than a driver in a vehicle in the safest category.

The good news is that there is at least one excellent safety performer awarded the full fivestar rating in every vehicle category in this year’s RACV Ratings, making it even easier for motorists to pick the safest car for their budget.

Each year, an alliance made up of governments, motoring clubs including RACV, and safety groups including TAC and VicRoads, gathers used car safety ratings, based on statistics collected from car crashes in Australia and New Zealand.
