RING IN THE FESTIVE SEASON WITH ONE SPECTACULAR WEEKEND!

Geelong’s Christmas celebrations will open with a bang as the City hosts a spectacular weekend of free Christmas attractions to ring in the festive season.

It all starts on Friday 10 November, when Geelong’s floating Christmas tree will return to the bay. One lucky local child – chosen through a colouring competition - will have the honour of flicking the switch to officially launch the City’s celebrations.

This year’s tree lighting ceremony will feature the biggest entertainment line-up yet, starting at 7.00pm with performances from the Mik Maks and culminating in a colourful lighting and fireworks display at 9.00pm.

The festive atmosphere will continue as a marching band leads the crowd on a short walk past the glow of the Catenary Star and lights on the corner of Moorabool and Malop St, and on to City Hall to see the stunning new light projection show starting at 9.30pm, created by local artist Matt Bonner.

Saturday 11 November will see Malop Street come alive for the twilight Gala Parade, beginning with the unveiling of the Myer Christmas windows at 5.00pm. This year’s theme is based on the classic children’s book Little Dog and the Christmas Wish by Corinne Fenton. For the first time, Deakin University engineering students will add animatronic movement to the characters – a partnership fit for our clever and creative city!

Then later join thousands of people lining Geelong’s streets for the twilight Gala parade as costumes, LED floats and glittering lights trace a magical path through Central Geelong.

The Christmas program is a partnership between the City and Central Geelong Marketing and supported by the GeelongPort, Myer, Westfield Geelong, Deakin University, Hanlon Industries, Total Events and Elstones Diving Services.

For the first time, engineering students from Deakin University have partnered with Central Geelong Marketing and the City of Greater Geelong to add animatronic movement to the characters.

The theme is based on the classic children’s book, Little

Dog and the Christmas Wish by Corinne Fenton and illustrated

by Robin Cowcher.

The Geelong windows are a retrospective of the 2015 Myer Melbourne windows and feature Little Dog – a white West Highland Terrier – who on Christmas Eve finds himself lost and alone in a busy city.

This year’s display will include a new fifth window featuring a range of unique Geelong landmarks engineered by the Deakin team.

The Myer Geelong Christmas Windows will be unveiled at 5.00pm on Saturday 11 November, just before the twilight Gala Parade.

LOCALS BRING TREE TO LIFE Geelong’s loating Christmas tree is the result of a great local efort.

“From the storage and building of the Christmas tree right through to the transporting and lighting of it, it’s all done by Geelong businesses,” City of Greater Geelong Director of Investment and Attraction Brett Luxford said.

Local organisations GeelongPort, Hanlon Industries, Elstone Diving Services and Total Events will again help bring the tree to life this Christmas.

NEW PROJECTION SHOW FOR CITY HALL Local artist Matt Bonner has come up with an exciting new Christmas projection display for City Hall.

The building’s Gheringhap Street façade will come alive in an animated light show that will delight both young and old.

Matt, who studied graphic design and multimedia at the Gordon TAFE, has an impressive resume.

He’s developed projection displays at well-known events including Geelong After Dark, White Night Ballarat and Big Day Out. Matt was also behind the ANZAC Centenary and Reconciliation Week projections on City Hall.

This year’s theme will follow the journey of the Christmas star, evoking a sense of wonder and beauty and celebrating the magic of Christmas.

Watch in awe as the star weaves behind and in front of City Hall’s columns, then disappears and remerges from the building’s windows.

Stars will twinkle, snow will fall, the building’s columns will magically transform into candy canes and children’s Christmas wishes and dream sequences will be played out in a spectacular display.

The City Hall projections will run nightly from 9.00pm – midnight staring 10 November and finishing on 7 January.

For 10 November only, projections start at 9.30pm.

City Hall’s set for more international travel after joining a UNESCO Creative Cities Network this week.

City investment and attraction director Brett Luxford “expected” that a council delegation would fly to Poland for the network’s annual meeting next year.

Participation in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network Summit was a condition of admission, he said.

“If designated, the City shall ensure the participation of a delegation ... including at least one representative.”

Next year’s summit would be in France’s Enghien-lesBains before Fabrino, Italy, hosted the event in 2019.

The network’s webpage lists a host of design summits, film

festivals and “creative” conventions in cities across the world, including Montreal, Rome and Buenos Aires.

City Hall was in the “very early stages” of developing a series of local events to enhance Geelong’s standing in the network as a “design” city, Mr Luxford said.

“These events place Geelong in a network of likeminded international cities and pave the way for our region to develop exciting new collaborations that will benefit our community.”

A dedicated secretariat would likely manage the new events, Mr Luxford said.

Various government and industry sources, including City of Greater Geelong, would fund the secretariat, he said.

Busy day across Geelong for emergency services

Shooting, smash dramas A gunshot, a serious crash and a petrol incident kept Geelong emergency services busy on Thursday.

Police arrested four youths after one allegedly fired a gun in a home invasion on the Bellarine Highway in Leopold about 2.20am.

The group smashed the front windows and broke into the home before threatening a man with a gun, police said.

One held the father downstairs and demanded money while two others assaulted his son and ransacked the property, according to police reports.

A shot was fired towards the father as the offenders took off but no-one was injured, police said.

Three people were home at the time of the incident, a 46-year-old man, a 46-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man.

The group then drove away in a black Commodore.

Police arrested a 19-year-old Eumemmerring

man, a 19-year-old man of no fixed address, a 17-year-old Hampton East boy and a 17-yearold Newcomb boy that afternoon in Melbourne’s south-east.

Police planned to interview the four youths in relation to the incident.

Victoria Police’s armed crime squad was investigating the incident on Thursday and urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Later that day a crash in Armstrong Creek left a woman fighting for her life.

An ambulance helicopter transported the woman in a critical condition to Royal Melbourne Hospital, an Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said.

The crash reportedly involved two cars.

One of the cars, carrying the women and her passengers, smashed into a tree on Lower Duneed Rd. CFA crews took about 20 minutes to cut open the car and free the woman, Belmont Station Of-

ficer Darrel Glessing said.

Police closed the road between Horseshoe Rd and Charlemont Rd as paramedics treated the woman and loaded her into the helicopter.

Paramedics also examined a preschool-aged girl, the Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said.

An ambulance took the girl to Geelong Hospital in a stable condition with “no obvious injuries”, they said.

At about the same time on Thursday Corio CFA responded to a Towonga Court resident reportedly dousing himself in petrol.

But when crews arrived at the home they found the man inside filling a lawnmower with petrol, according to Corio CFA senior station officer Mark Bellew.

“That’s what he was claiming,” he said. “It was a bit of a false alarm in the end.”

“Our job was pretty easy at that one - we just go to the place and make sure it’s not full of fumes and doesn’t blow up.”

Vaccination warning Six local cases of potentially fatal meningococcal disease in 12 months have prompted authorities to recommend vaccinations for 15 to 19-year-olds before summer.

The State Government urged parents to arrange the free vaccinations through their family GPs or council ahead of the peak time for meningococcal, which has killed five Victorians over the past year.

Fewer bankrupt Geelong people are less likely to be bankrupt than the average Victorian, according to new statistics.

Australian Financial Security Authority figures for the September quarter showed that Geelong had an insolvency rate of 29.2 per 100,000 residents 18 or older compared to the state average of 33.3.

Gordon funding A program helping Geelong’s former Ford workers find new jobs will share in an additional $2.9 million of state funding for the city’s TAFE institute.

Count on Taylor as school song shines across the nation

By Luke Voogt Ceres singer and talent show finalist Taylor Henderson led thousands of kids in song across Australia on Thursday.

About 3400 schools sang Shine Together, a song five secondary school students wrote with Taylor and iconic music director John Foreman.

“It has been my job but the kids have made it a breeze,” Taylor said.

“I’ve had recording sessions with songwriters that’s their literal job description - and I’ve had a harder time with some of them.”

Taylor played the song in front of thousands of students at Federation Square in Melbourne on Thursday.

The 24-year-old former reality show contestant got involved in the event after working alongside Foreman.

“I really wanted to do it,” he said.

“I love kids - my Dad’s girlfriend’s got a couple of kids and I’m always looking after them.”

Count Us In is a Federal Government program which selects five children to write a song for thousands of schools around the country to sing.

Taylor enjoyed his role as mentor for the song writing prodigies.

“They came with these chord progressions that I never even thought of using. These kids are so talented, man. I see a lot of myself in these them.”

City Hall will continue negotiating a new enterprise agreement with unions “in good faith”, according to chief executive officer Kelvin Spiller.

He made the pledge on Thursday after a union leader used council’s caretaker period to allege that bullying remained an ongoing problem among City Hall staff.

Beach wider Two-thousand cubic metres of sand from Portarlington has expanded a North Shore beach in time for summer.

City Hall put the finishing touches on Moorpanyal Park Beach this week, widening the strip of sand by 10 to 15 metres.

Mr ‘No’ gives absolution to silent church leaders

By Luke Voogt Anti-gay marriage campaigners have absolved local religious leaders who were accused of being “silent” on the issue.

The criticism came as the national face of the ‘no’ campaign, Lyle Shelton, visited Geelong to meet local Coalition for Marriage campaigners on Tuesday.

The managing director of the Australian Christian Lobby blamed fear of “being called a homophobe or a bigot” for church leaders staying quiet.

“Church leaders don’t want to create disincentives to come to church,” Mr Shelton said.

Some Geelong Coalition for Marriage volunteers mentioned local church leaders who had voiced opinions but the campaign was mostly “grassroots”, he said.

Local ‘no’ campaigner Ken Francis said “laypeople” had taken up the debate.

“The people I work with are quite often Christians. They’re all motivated by a world view,” Mr Francis said.

“Church leaders may not want to be seen as telling people what to think,” he said.

“I think we’ve gone past the day where we’re relying on church people to create the agenda.”

Spate of bombs A spate of “homemade explosive devices” damaging letterboxes and telephone booths around Geelong has prompted police to seek help from the public.

Investigators want tip-offs about “at least two offenders” believed responsible for the spate of explosions.

The devices has been exploding around the city over the past three months, police posted on social media today.

“Investigators believe at least two offenders are responsible for a number of incidents where letterboxes and telephone booths have been damaged by homemade explosive devices.

School works finally fire

Work has commenced on a Geelong school building almost a year after arsonists destroyed it in January.

Newcomb Park Primary School principal Julie Warren welcomed workers to the school after 10 months of “standstill”. “(The Department of Education is) promising it will be finished by 19 December, so we can move back in next year,” she said.

“We want the children to come to school feeling they’ve got this wonderful learning space, to be the best they can be.”

School council president Miranda Hurley contacted the Indy last month following the Education Department’s failure to repair the learning hub.

A bureaucratic bungle within the department led to the delay, she said on 5 October.

“We’ve had enough. I’ve had to turn to the media to speed things up ... due to frustratingly long periods of waiting.”

A lot of “pro-active work” and meetings had happened since then, Ms Warren said.

A demolition team arrived at the school Monday to clear out the building’s interior.

The “hub of the school” had been home to assemblies, concerts and graduations, Ms Warren said.

She worried the burnt-out hub might have influenced parents to choose another school over Newcomb Park Primary.

“We need to show our prospective parents what it looks like when it’s up and running,” she said.

“It supports what teaching and learning is all about.”

Ms Warren praised Geelong State MP Christine Couzens for her efforts to speed up the rebuild.

“Our local member has been fabulous,” she said.

Mr Luxford believed that Geelong’s admission into the network as a city of “design” would create international business opportunities and local jobs.

The network comprises 180 cities from 72 countries working to place creativity and cultural industries at the forefront of their development plans.

Geelong justified its application to the network through council administrators’ 30 Year Clever and Creative Vision.

The development of the vision cost more than $500,000.

“The community of greater Geelong have driven the concept of a clever and creative cityregion to frame our strategies over the next 30 years,” Mr Luxford said.

The network membership acknowledged Geelong’s history in the textile, automotive and surf industries along with new innovations in advanced manufacturing, he said.

“Being designated a UNESCO Creative City of Design opens up national and international networks and creative opportunities to increase our profile on the world stage.”

Council candidate and former mayor Bruce Harwood was sceptical on whether the membership would produce “tangible outcomes”.

“What outcomes can we get other than another discussion or consultant’s paper?” he asked.

Australian Centre for Innovation and Design, the Victorian Government and Deakin University supported the application.

Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander said the Design City designation put Geelong in a group of “like-minded” cities.

“We are excited by the opportunities this will bring Deakin University to continue to grow our cutting-edge design research and help drive innovation in local business and manufacturing.”

Crew gets cracking on long leak

Porter Street local Rod Fraser welcomed Barwon Water fixing the leak after speaking to the Indy a fortnight ago.

“It’s amazing when you guys get involved all of a sudden things start to happen,” he said.

Mr Fraser phoned the authority multiple times only to be “handballed from one person to another”.

“They had no bloody idea how to fix it when I complained, but now you’ve put something in the paper they’re doing it,” he said.

The leak had left his nature strip and property relatively unscathed, but “ruined” the front yard of a “lovely couple” nearby, he said.

Barwon Water commenced the works at the corner Bonsey and South Valley roads 7am yesterday and planned to finish repairing the main by 7pm.

The authority employed traffic management on South Valley Road, Bonsey Road and Porter Avenue as it repaired the main.

Barwon Water identified a pinhole leak in a main on South Valley Road and installed a temporary fix earlier this year, which later broke.

Water had been travelling downhill through service conduits and pooling outside two proper-

ties in Porter Avenue since, Barwon Water infrastructure manager Paul Northey said.

The main serviced about 7000 customers across Highton and Belmont, meaning the repair required significant planning, he said.

“While the works have been carefully planned to minimise the impact on customers, there might be a minor reduction in water pressure during the works.

“Our Operations team will be continuously monitoring pressure throughout the repair and have plans in place for an alternate supply to boost pressure if necessary.”

Six Geelong Venturers have won the Scouts’ top award after volunteering hundreds of hours of community service.

Lara’s Alex Delaney was one of the local youths to receive a Queen’s Scout Award after serving meals to the homeless at Christ Church.

“When I first went there I thought it was just about feeding them,” the 18-year-old said.

“But I saw the bigger picture and that it was more about mental health - it’s a social event for a lot of people.”

Helping Joey sections out was also a highlight for Alex, who joined Scouts at age eight.

Alex started the Queen’s Scout program in September 2014.

“I’m very proud,” he said. “It’s really good after all the hard work over the years.”

Alex joined local Venturers Juliana Long, Jessica Loone, Jake McCorkell, Emily Kinross-Smith and Lily Twyford receiving the award at Government House on Saturday.

Victorian Governor Linda Dessau presented the award to Alex, and his fellow Venturers from Belmont, Highton and Modewarre Scout groups.

‘Rogue’ ride is a coast worry: MP

By Luke Voogt About 180 cyclists rode in an “illegal” event on the Great Ocean Road last month, according to a Surf Coast MP. Polwarth MP Richard Riordan on Wednesday urged Police Minister Lisa Neville to take action against the “rogue” cycling event on 21 October.

“Hundreds of cyclists dominated dangerous local bush and scenic roads without protection or road safety management,” he said.

But the event’s 71-year-old founder Richard McDonnell hit back, ridiculing the MP’s accusations.

“We had the police there the whole morning,” he said. “They didn’t try to stop the event.”

In a speech to parliament Mr Riordan said Great Ocean Road Cycling held the ride without permission, VicRoads’ knowledge and against the advice of police.

“Events of this type cannot be allowed to be orchestrated and run without planning approval.

There is strong concern in the Otways that the police seem powerless to stop this dangerous activity, with both organisers and individual cyclists clearly flouting the law.

“Can the Minister tell my electorate what actions if any will be taken by Victoria Police against the organisers?”

But the ride required no permit and had run without one for the first eight of its 11 years, Mr McDonnell said.

“I founded it and ran it every year with my family and volunteers.”

Police attended the ride on 21 October and

told cyclists the event was unsanctioned, but did not stop them from riding, Mr Riordan said.

“If police had the authority, they would have stopped the event.”

He said the cyclists rode in teams of six during the time trial. He understood that only cycling events with groups of more than 30 riders required a permit.

In late 2013 Colac police approached Mr McDonnell and set up a meeting between him and the Surf Coast Shire.

Mr McDonnell went “through quite a few hoops and charges” to obtain a permit from 2014 to 2016, he said.

“If anything happened on their roads they were covered if anyone sued them.”

The Indy obtained copies of Colac Otway and Surf Coast shires’ permits for the event for 2014.

But the Surf Coast Shire would not support the event this year, following a dispute between Mr McDonnell and another group which planned a similar event that weekend.

The grandfather of nine from Glen Iris founded the event after buying a holiday home in Anglesea.

“I’m hardly described as a rogue,” he said.

“I’ve been riding for 30 years and set up the event because it seemed to be what people down there wanted.”

Mr McDonnell dedicated this year’s ride to Derek ‘Disco’ Josephs, who died in a cycling accident earlier this year.

He said the non-profit event brought “$350,000” to the region.

A Geelong project using thousands of leftover oyster shells to create habitats in Port Phillip Bay has won a state-wide award.

The Nature Conservancy teamed with local restaurants and seafood suppliers to divert 350 cubic metres of shells from landfill since April 2016.

The conservancy adapted the Shuck Don’t Chuck program from the US to rebuild Australian shellfish reefs, which were some of the mostthreatened habitats in Australia.

A century ago Corio Bay was home to oyster and mussel reefs that supported fish, crabs, sea squirts, snails and sponges.

But years of commercial dredging, pollution, introduced species and disease had destroyed these reefs, according to the conservancy.

The conservancy quarantined and cured the shells for six months before using them in a new oyster and mussel reef habitat.

The Shuck Don’t Chuck project won 2017 Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Awards’ community category.

Nature Conservancy’s Simon Branigan, and Little Creatures’ Alex Smith received the award from Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio last Thursday.

“Congratulations to all of this year’s winners,” the minister said. “Your contributions will have

The project created 10 jobs for people with disabilities collecting the shells at hospitality venues in Geelong.

The award follows the conservancy’s efforts to rebuild reefs at Wilson Spit south of Avalon and at a site near St Kilda.

The organisation laid 180 tonnes of limestone rock as foundations at each site before placing thousands of juvenile oysters in March.

The shells from the project had contributed to the Wilson Spit reef, the Nature Conservancy’s Tony Jupp said.

Letters Pride administered a blow I used to be proud of my city until the State Government claimed it would stamp out bullying by sacking the elected council and installing the three amigos. I am no longer proud of my city.

The administrators did not stamp out the bullying and they attempted to save money by not spending on necessary services instead of their own salaries. They allowed the municipality to become dirty and unloved, with graffiti out of control, grasses in need of cutting, rubbish left on the side of the road.

It would appear the three administrators travel behind tinted windows in their taxpayer-funded cars so they are unable to see the messes of their own making.

Let us hope the newly-elected councillors are allowed to do what they were elected to do - serve the community that elected them. Maybe then we may all say: “I am proud of the city in which I live”.

Take better care of elderly Elder abuse is worrying because there is no legislated system of monitoring the elderly in residential care and no set patient-to-nurse ratio to protect the needs of those susceptible to abuse in elder care.

There is no mandatory reporting system in place to reduce the risk to the vulnerable in private care.

Unlike regimented childcare centres, adoption and fostering, and the rigid regime for those on Department of Community Services watch, seniors are our most vulnerable demographic. There are no legally required minimum ratios of staff to residents, no minimum training standards, and no mandatory requirement to have a nurse on duty always.

There is merely an unenforceable rule that the staff numbers should be adequate.

A society is judged on how it treats its most vulnerable, so the onus is on the government to protect those who made Australia the great nation it is because they have few dedicated advocates of their own.

A day to remember I congratulate Geelong Racing Club for putting on a great cup day last week (Geelong Indy, 27 October).

While the cup field may not have been as strong as in recent years, it was a highly competitive race.

Half a dozen horses finished within two lengths of the imported winner, Ireland’s Vengeur Masque.

I also congratulate the very well-behaved oncourse crowd, which was a contrast to some previous years.

It was a race day for which the club can and should be justly proud.

Jobless need a raise Five years ago the Business Council of Australia told Federal Parliament that the rate of the Newstart Allowance for jobseekers no longer met “a community standard of adequacy and may now be so low as to represent a barrier to employment".

Despite this wise advice there still has been no increase to Newstart. Those in Geelong having to survive each day on this benefit live $110 a week below the poverty line, while Youth Allowance recipients live $159 below the poverty line.

This is clearly unfair.

It is extremely difficult in the sluggish existing economy for an unemployed person to find employment. For every job advertised at least five to 10 applicants hope to obtain the position.

The unemployed also have to compete with over one million underemployed Australians who are looking to increase their hours of work in order to improve the financial well-being of themselves and their families.

The unemployed deserve a weekly income that enables them to properly live and search for work. I ask Geelong’s Coalition and Opposition federal MPs to speak up in parliament for an immediate increase in the Newstart and Youth allowances.

This is an issue that deserves bipartisan support.

by containing fires as quickly as possible to protect the public while saving as much property and livestock as possible.

Then along came Peter Marshall’s United Firefighters Union and Daniel Andrews who sacked the CFA board and anyone else who opposed the union’s demands to restructure the fire service and give the union veto over the CFA. Mr Andrews replaced all the sacked people with his puppets for no other reason than money to increase the union’s pay and penalty rates.

He was cunning enough to peg our fire levies for the next two years. If Mr Andrews’ CFA legislation passes, how much will our levies increase after the two years?

Mr Andrews has been pushing his CFA agenda only because of the support he received from the union at the last state election, but it will be taxpayers left with the massive expense.

Tearing down concept of love The recent tearing down of a banner supporting a ‘no’ vote at a church on Latrobe Terrace and the defacing of another in Aberdeen Street was testament to the sort of love proclaimed by the LBGTI activists involved.

These were not isolated incidents. The abuse suffered by the lone Christian athlete Israel Falou, who was brave enough to express what he believed while his association spoke otherwise, was another example of intolerance.

If the Federal Government allows same-sex marriage then such intolerance will be evident throughout society.

The love these vandals promote is selfish and one that will deny the expression of the alternative view.

Of most importance, it is a love willing to purposefully deny some children the right of natural parenting’s unique contribution from both a male and female of raising their young.

Christians believe in love. Jesus taught us to first love God, then our fellow man.

The Bible describes the way such love can be practised so that both God, family and society can be best served.

Both the Old and New Testaments condemn the practice of homosexuality. A ‘yes’ vote is designed to have such a type of love approved by society.

The silence of many churches and prominent Christians on this issue reveals a departure from a practical commitment to the doctrines they profess to practice.

Warm up to thorium reactors As dihydrogen monoxide vapour has by far the biggest climate impact, perhaps Jukka Tuisku (Letters, 20 October) would favour a ban on clouds as a solution to his perceived problem?

Alarmist computer models have theorised that increasing atmospheric CO2 levels amplify the greenhouse effect from dihydrogen monoxide. But the reality is that such amplification is purely mythical, so the modelling of a projected 3.5C increase, as Mr Tuisku cited, is pure fantasy that is contradicted by radiosonde and satellite records.

As Mr Saclier has pointed out correctly, CO2 has a logarithmic impact that is significant up to 100ppm in the atmosphere but which diminishes rapidly afterward. At 400ppm, the current level, further increases have only trivial impact.

The most significant fact, though, is that CO2 levels have historically followed temperature rises, not the other way around.

Now we have an emerging energy crisis, caused by unreliable renewables. There is really only one way to fix the problem while placating those like Mr Tuisku, who appear fixated on the need to reduce “carbon” emissions, and that is nuclear power.

The way forward is with new technology: molten salt reactors using thorium.

The Americans ran their first experimental thorium reactor successfully in the 1960s before it was defunded and closed down because it couldn’t be used to make bombs!

I’m reliably informed the Chinese will be the first cab off the rank with production-line units coming on the market in 2018, so stand by folks.

Portrait prize is a colourful race

By Luke Voogt Sophia Hewson’s shortlisted Archibald Prize might appear blissfully colourful on the surface, but it hints at her darker view of the competition’s past.

Hewson depicted “white guilt” by painting Indigenous artist and activist Richard Bell and herself skipping through a field surrounded by cartoons.

“In 96 years the prize has never been awarded to a person of colour,” she said.

“It’s a situation for which this work is no remedy.

“The Archibald Prize was named after the founding editor of a magazine - The Bulletin known for its racist editorial declarations.”

Hewson, who grew up Geelong West, entered the prestigious portrait competition for her third time this year.

Her portrait featured in an exhibition of this year’s 43 Archibald Prize finalists, on show at Geelong Gallery until 10 December.

The 33-year-old met fellow Archibald Prize finalist Bell in New York in 2015, after his selfportrait made the finals of the contest that year.

Hewson admired Bell for his work raising important questions.

“Do we live in a nation of roughly equal opportunity? Or do we live in a fantasy land, a cracked cartoon landscape brimming with fairytale myths of freedom and democracy?

“For decades Richard Bell has worked to raise these difficult questions and to provocatively, intelligently and playfully challenge our conceptions.”

Hewson joins a number of artists and sitters with Geelong connections.

Fellow finalist Kate Beynon won the 2016 Geelong contemporary art prize, while sitters William Luke and Remy van de Wiel have been involved in the Surf Coast for decades.

Wallington resident Janet Dawson, who won the Archibald Prize in 1973, features in the competition again in Ashley Frost’s portrait of her outside her studio.

Dawson won the portrait prize with a painting of her late husband and playwright Michael Boddy.

“I say good morning to it every morning,” the 82-year-old told the Indy earlier this year.

“After I won the prize, my brother bought it because he was so excited.”

Sphinx rocker has amps

By Luke Voogt Visitors can discover the Geelong Botanic Gardens from an artist’s perspective when guided tours wind through its grounds next Sunday.

Botanic artist Dolores Skowronski-Malloni has tutored aspiring painters and drawers for a decade at the “beautiful” gardens, which first opened in 1851.

“It’s been here for so long and it will be here for even longer,” she said.

Dolores described the botanic garden, the fourth oldest in Australia, as a “fabulous asset”.

“It’s a beautiful place to work with, and it’s a very interesting and relaxing place to be,” she said.

“There is something for everybody.”

The tour follows her book Trees: Capturing the Essence of the Geelong Botanic Gardens.

The garden is home to scores of trees which the National Trust of Australia classified as heritage listed.

The tour starts out the front of the Geelong Botanic Gardens 2pm on Sunday for a gold donation.

For those about to rock, get your dirty deeds done dirt cheap on the highway to hell down to the Sphinx for some high voltage rock and roll.

Aussie DC will hit Geelong on Saturday 4 November, and punters will get to see the longest consistently established AC/DC tribute band in the world.

Formerly Dirty Deeds, the band changed its name in February this year.

Lead singer Alfi Rocker portrays both Bon Scott and Brian Johnson during the show.

“When we started, we only did Bon Scott,” Rocker told the Indy.

“We only started doing Brian Johnson in 2000.

It’s weird singing both - it’s actually a hard job, it’s certainly not easy. I don’t try to sound exactly like either of them. I care more about being in pitch, in tune and in time.”

Rocker has many vivid memories of playing in Geelong since the band formed in 1990.

“We’ve played there many times,” he says.

“When we first started, we did some absolutely massive shows there. Before pubs had pokies, we’d play to six to seven to eight hundred people at a time.”

Aussie DC is fresh from a performance at Phillip Island for the motorcycle grand prix in front of 5000 people.

“We just continue on our way,” Rocker says.

“Other bands just seem to be in it to make a couple of bucks. That’s not us. It’s completely from the heart for us. It’s for fun, not for money. We’re just a really good band and play it really well.”

Geelong AC/DC fans can expect a high energy show at the Sphinx.

“Matty who plays Angus (Young) - he’s skinny as a rake and just goes nuts,” Rocker says.

“We get right into it and have a good time. The last 10 years have been the best years. Everyone can expect the biggest hits of Bon Scott and Brian Johnson.”

New venue for carols lights up Redevelopment works have forced Geelong’s Carols by Candelight out of its traditional Johnstone Park venue.

But Kardinia Park has emerged as the event’s saviour, with the park’s management to host the carols on the home ground of the Cats.

Kardinia Park Stadium Trust confirmed the arrangement this week, saying it was “excited” about working with organiser Y Service Club of Geelong to host the “biggest” carols yet.

“Due to redevelopment work at Johnstone Park, the event will be held at GMHBA Stadium, ensuring the carols, which have been a Geelong Christmas Eve tradition since 1965, will go ahead,” the trust announced.

Long-serving carols organiser Noel Hooper expected a bigger crowd this year, thanks to the appeal of the stadium.

Hopper considered the arrangement “a boost for the community”.

“With this year’s Carols being held in such an iconic and accessible venue, we hope to get an extra 2000 to 3000 more people come along,” he said.

Trust chief Michael Brown also welcomed the announcement.

“The trust is looking forward to welcoming the Geelong community to GMHBA Stadium to embrace the festive spirit and enjoy a great night of entertainment,” Brown said.

“I would like to thank the City of Greater Geelong for connecting the trust with the Y Service of Geelong. We have a magnificent Stadium in Geelong, and we are proud to host such a wonderful tradition.”

Organisers said the 53rd Geelong Carols by Candlelight would feature a host of talented local performers including the Mik Maks, Shandelle Cooke and “many more”.

Bitten by bonsai bug - and it’s easy

By Luke Voogt Bonsais are easier to maintain than most people think, according to long-time pruner Paul Buttigieg.

He and fellow Geelong Bonsai Club members will show off their best-trimmed trees at Belmont next weekend to inspire the city’s next batch of green thumbs.

“We’re more than happy to help people start from scratch,” he said.

The club has been going since 1986, and has members aged from their twenties to their nineties, with varying levels of expertise.

“A few eat and breathe bonsai,” Paul said.

“We’re from all industries and walks of life we’ve all been bitten by the bonsai bug.

“About 20 of us have got serious, fantastic collections - and I’d be in the 15 to 20 mark.”

Paul, 70, reckoned his horticulture hobby had

pruned years from his life, along with not smoking.

“Everyone’s got to have a hobby that takes their mind off the pressures of life and makes them enjoy being alive - for me that’s bonsai,” he said.

The IT salesman began pruning his first juniper 2009 when his children bought him a bonsai course for Father’s Day. “I can proudly say it is still alive and thriving,” he says. “Often people lose their first tree.”

Paul’s collection has since bloomed to about 100 plants, and pruning, wiring and weeding his bonsais is a welcome meditative escape.

“When I’m with the trees I forget the hustle and bustle of life,” he says.

“Time stands still. By the time I’ve finished, all the stress is gone.”

The Geelong Bonsai Club’s annual show runs on 11 and 12 November at Geelong Masonic Hall, Belmont. For more information email geelong@ bonsai.org.au.

Join in on spring exploration cycle With spring well and truly in the air, what better time of year is there to dust off the bicycle, find a helmet, call up some friends and go for a ride. The challenge with that is people don’t always know who to call. This has all changed with the introduction of Life Cycle 55+ Explore Rides in Geelong.

Life Cycle 55+ is a weekly group ride tailored to those aged 55 and over. It consists of a weekly ride around the bike trails and pathways of Geelong.

For the co-ordinator of the ride, Chelsea Fisher, nothing beats getting out in the fresh air and exploring the bike paths and trails.

“There’s a lot of trails in Geelong (and surrounds) that people aren’t aware of,” Chelsea explains “and also coffee shops - there are some

great coffee shops. The rides provide opportunities for people to be active, and socialise over a coffee. Some great friendships have been formed through the course of our rides.”

Chelsea has led the weekly ride for over 12 months now. It leave from outside Little Creatures Brewery at 10am each Friday.

Every week she comes up with a fun local ride tailored to the weather and the riders ability.

“I always come with fresh ideas. However riding along the waterfront on a clear day is one of my favourites - it’s gorgeous!”

Swiss boxer Werner Kieser invented the rehabilitation method in 1966 after using strength training to overcome his own injury.

Today, more than 600 members of all ages practice Kieser’s method at the Geelong centre, both to recover from injuries and to become fitter.

If Kieser Geelong is good enough for the Cats, it’s good enough for the city, says manager Richard Wallace.

“We’ve got players from the Geelong Football Club using the facilities who have been referred in by their medical team,” the Belmont physio says.

“The next person to get on the machine might be an 80-year-old lady.”

Richard has worked in physiotherapy for 15 years, including a stint as sports physio and rehab manager at the Western Bulldogs.

Local mechanic Mark Goodear brought 28 years of working on luxury vehicles with him when he joined Geelong West Automotive a few months ago.

Geelong West Automotive is the city’s independent specialists in Volvo, Peugeot, Renault and Citroen, which Mark has serviced since starting as an apprentice at age 16.

“That’s all I’ve ever known,” the workshops’ new part-owner and manager says.

“Our workshops are tooled up especially to service these luxury European vehicles.”

Mark prides himself on his attention to detail, which is what any luxury car owner would expect.

He joins fellow mechanics Adam Hunter, Gordon Cuthill and Ben Buckle as part owner of the workshop.

The team also includes George Bellingham, who has over 40 years of experience working with Volvo.

Model range When the first Land Rover Discovery was launched in 1989 it was a cross between the tough, almost military, Defender and the upper-luxury Range Rover. Over the next 27 years and four generations it has matured into a more refined vehicle, but retained plenty of off-road capability.

Now the fifth generation Land Rover Discovery is here and we’ve just spent an interesting week running in what will be typical conditions to most owners - suburban and city running as a family station wagon. Shopping, sitting in traffic and suchlike boring stuff.

There was one exception, our Discovery set a lap record for a luxury 4WD around the temporary racetrack a couple of days before the Gold Coast 600 Supercars race. I won’t disclose our lap time in case it turns into a competition to beat it.

But our dog Bailey sitting in the navigator’s seat was pretty impressed with the handling and comfort. (Hint, the time was very long due to hopeless traffic and suspicious police people.)

Older Discoverys were heavy beasts, thankfully that problem has been solved and a reduction of 480 kg in vehicle weight achieved to the outgoing Discovery 4. The use of aluminium in 85 per cent of the body is the major reason.

New Land Rover Discovery is sold in four levels - S, SE, HSE and HSE Luxury and with the choice of five or seven seats. Our test car was the HSE. The rounded front is too soft for our taste and we feel it may upset Land Rover traditionalists.

Then again, this market segment is becoming stylish as almost all buyers are looking for a fancy station wagon not a 4WD or SUV. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so I will wait and see what people say down the track, or should that be down the suburban streets?

The interior we do like, it’s neat and straightforward in its design, and in true LR style is very usable. The high quality materials received nothing but positive comments.

Three turbo-diesel engines are offered with Discovery in Australia: two four-cylinder Ingenium units and a V6. Our Disco had a TdV6 with 190 kW and 600 Nm. The entry-level Td4 produces 132 kW and 430 Nm; the higher tuned Sd4 has 177 kW and 500 Nm. A V6 Si6 petrol engine is sold in other markets but there are no plans for it to be imported.

All engines sits in front an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission and in Australia are sold only with multi-mode 4WD. The 2WD option in other countries isn’t offered here.

New Discovery has the latest Jaguar Land Rover’s InControl Touch Pro infotainment system. The touchscreen is positioned high on the centre console and is easy to use through the series of menus. The clean uncluttered appearance was commented on all who rode in the Discovery with us.

Satellite navigation can share directions to a paired smartphone to help you complete your journey on foot after leaving the vehicle.

and there are up to six 12-Volt sockets. S and SE models have an 8-inch touchscreen, HSE and HSE Luxury get a 10-inch screen.

The latest in crash avoidance and, if worst comes to the worst, minimisation of injuries to all occupants, is installed in these very safe Brits.

All rear seats (five or seven) get IsoFix child-seat mounting points.

Getting in and out of the Land Rover Discovery isn’t as easy as in many so-called SUVs that are really only tall station wagons. Discovery is the real deal so the high(ish) seat position is necessary if you’re planning real off-road work.

Seven adults can be carried in reasonable comfort. Cramped footroom for taller second-row occupants when the front seats all the way back possibly requires compromises.

The two third row seats are wide, with enough leg and headroom even for tall adults. Access into third-row seats is tricky.

With all seats in place there’s a minute 258 litres of luggage space. Lowering the third row seats increases it to 1231 litres. There’s 2406 litres with the second row seats also folded.

Hidden cubby stowage in the central console can hold four iPads or a pair of two-litre drinks bottles. A central armrest cubby large enough to house five iPads with a lid that hinges through 180 degrees to function as an armrest even when open Hidden small-item stowage behind the folddown Climate Control panel is also appreciated.

Discovery’s smooth, comfortable ride makes it an excellent long-distance cruiser. Something that was appreciated when we drove the new Discovery in the Northern Territory a few weeks back as part of the Aust media launch.

Around town it’s easy to drive and park despite its apparent bulk. The turning circle is nice and tight for this class and outward visibility is good.

Handling offers plenty of road grip, more than is likely to be used if you’ve got the family on board. If you’re a keen driver and mum and the kids have been left behind you will be surprised how well it holds on. However it’s still a 4WD and we suggest you choose a Jaguar sedan or sports instead of you really like to pedal hard.

Fuel consumption in our turbo-diesel was in the six to seven litre range on the motorways, climbing to a still reasonable nine to twelve litres per hundred kilometres around town.

Again we fell in love with the Land Rover Activity Key wristband. This lets you enjoy sports and active hobbies while leaving the standard key hidden in the vehicle. Holding the waterproof Activity Key up to the ‘D’ in the Discovery badge on the tailgate locks and unlocks the vehicle.

Discovery is the real deal, it’s a genuine 4WD not a toy hatchback tarted up to look like one.

Other than the aforementioned over-sleek styling we would be more than happy to live with one.

SPORT Geelong claims first scalp LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club finally claimed their first win for the season last Saturday against Greenvale, on the back of another splendid century from skipper Eamonn Vines.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Cats didn’t have it all their own way early, losing both openers with just 51 runs on the board.

Angus Boyd (37) joined Vines at the crease for an important 69-run partnership to get things back on track.

From there, the middle and lower orders all came and went, but it was Vines who stood tall, playing a fantastic captain’s knock to eventually finish on 121 not out in his side’s total of 9/264.

With the ball, Geelong were ruthless, knowing that a disciplined showing would see them claim their first points of the season, and that is exactly what they did.

Seven bowlers were used, with all of them picking up at least one wicket, Boyd (2/33) being the only trundler to claim multiple victims, Greenvale finishing on 8/188 at stumps.

The win was well deserved, as - despite a frustrating start to the season - it hasn’t been a lack of hard work that has been the problem.

The side heads to Casey Fields tomorrow, hoping to make it back-to-back victories in a oneday game against Casey-South Melbourne.

In the Geelong Cricket Association division one, round four kicks off tomorrow with another two-day fixture scheduled.

Lara host North Geelong in the game of the round, and the Cats will be looking to make it three wins from four starts, which would bring to an end the Magpies’ unbeaten start to the season.

Lara were excellent in the first two rounds, with wins against Leopold and South Barwon, before lowering their colours to Newtown and Chillwell in round three.

The return of former Jack Sing medallist Daniel Weigl from the knee injury that kept him out for all of last season has bolstered the Cats, but the form of Andy Hughes has been the catalyst for their rise thus far, the classy batsman racking up 147 runs already in the number three position.

North Geelong will be the perfect test to see exactly where they’re at though, with Magpies winning all their games so far, on the back of solid performances by all of their star studded line up.

Lara should give a good account of themselves, but they’ll need to be at their very best to push North Geelong here.

Murgheboluc v GEELONG CITY, South Barwon v ST JOSEPH’S, Leopold v EAST BELMONT, GROVEDALE v Newtown and Chilwell, Lara v NORTH GEELONG Division two also have a two-dayer, their first for the season. All games this round look like being very even match-ups, and in what looks like being an extremely tight season, the move to red ball cricket will see the need for all players to lift their game if they want their teams to bank some crucial early season points.

ST PETER’S v Newcomb and District, BELL PARK v Highton, BELL POST HILL v Manifold Heights, Torquay v MARSHALL In division three, Corio and Waurn PondsDeakin look to be the two sides that will struggle to make the finals, but for the other six teams, it’s going to be a great season, with every game of the utmost importance to try to snare a spot in the eventual final four.

Guild Saints are hanging in there, but a tough game this round against Thomson could see them fall behind their immediate rivals if they can’t cause a big upset.

Teeming with large snapper ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Clifton Springs seems to cement itself as the snapper capital of the Bellarine Peninsula, with anglers boating fish to 8kg over the past week.

The Point Richards channel was a great place to start, with anglers rounding out schools then anchoring to pitch out bait for good results. Pilchard or silver whiting were effective baits, while anglers who braved rougher weather caught larger fish.

The spoil grounds were good fun on soft plastics for pinkie snapper, flathead and pike to 80cm. Gulps or slow-trolled Daiwa double 75s worked well.

Land-based anglers continued banking pinkies to 2kg from the harbour rocks at Portarlington, with the odd larger fish also taken. Silver trevally and whiting were caught as well.

St Leonards’ Bourke Street area fired up big time for bag-limit captures of King George whiting on sunset. Anglers who ventured further down toward Swan Bay also reported good captures.

The bight off Queenscliff gave up monster squid up to 2kg, but were patchy at times.

Queenscliff Harbour was excellent for pinkie snapper along with pike and salmon over 1kg. Bait or lure both worked, with fishing the slow-running tides or the leadup to high tide providing the best action.

Surf Coast estuaries fished well for bream to an impressive 45cm. Soft plastics like Z-Man grubs did the job, while bait anglers has success with lightly weighted yabbies.

The surf beaches were worth a walk and cast for salon to 2.5kg. Lures cast from the sand worked well on the lead-up to high tide.

Last Sunday’s Ron Nelson fishing clinic was a great success as about 80 kids landed some feisty rainbow trout along with redfin and even an eel. Elijah Malone won the clinic’s boy’s competition with a well-conditioned rainbow trout of 930g.

I discovered Lake Tooliorook in fine form last Friday. My few hours trolling Tassie Devils produced brown and rainbow trout to almost 2kg.

Lake Purrumbete gave up trophy-size brown trout over 5kg again. Anglers also found smaller model brown, rainbow and brook trout.

Next door Lake Bullen Merri was consistent for Chinook salmon to 2kg both trolling and bait fishing.

The next week’s options should feature Clifton Springs for snapper, while whiting at St Leonard’s could be a safe bet for a feed. Also, kingfish should soon begin appearing in The Rip and offshore.

CLAWS FOR CELEBRATION: Cats CEO Brian Cook, pictured with Joel Selwood, has welcomed the AFL’s decision to grant Geelong nine games at the Cattery.

Friendly fixture means nine home games for Geelong Geelong will play two extra games at Kardinia Park in 2018 following the release of the AFL’s fixture for next season.

Cats chief executive officer Brian Cook was thrilled the AFL had recognised the club’s supporters “deserved” nine games in Geelong.

“We think this also makes the fixture fairer from an integrity point of view,” he said.

The draw will see Carlton return to the Cattery for the first time since 1997.

“To have Carlton playing here for the first time since 1997 will be a huge day for supporters of both clubs,” Cook said.

“We are also excited by the on-going Country Festival match up with Essendon at the MCG in round nine.

The Cats play Hawthorn, in the traditional Easter Monday clash, and reigning premiers Richmond for their remaining home games at the MCG. “While in an ideal world we would have 11 games at GMHBA Stadium, we understand and respect the AFL’s position,” Cook said.

“We are looking forward to again facing the

Hawks on such a significant day on the AFL calendar.”

“That we will have 16 of our 22 games at either GMHBA Stadium or the MCG is excellent news for our members and supporters in both the western region and the greater Melbourne metropolitan area.”

The Cats open the season against Melbourne at the MCG with captain Joel Selwood to play his 250th game.

Gary Ablett will play for the first time in blue and white since the 2010 preliminary final.

The Cats will play this year’s top eight in nine of 22 games.
