The Dandenong Ranges RSL is preparing something extra special for Remembrance Day this year, with a unique display sure to turn heads. The centrepiece to the display is a poppy that formed part of the ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ artwork, which was placed in the moat of the Tower of London in 2014. Residents of Hughes Street in Upwey will need to wait to find out if their neighbourhood will become home to 140 show pigeons.

At its Tuesday 24 October meeting, Yarra Ranges Council opted to defer a decision on an application to construct three pigeon lofts at a residence in the street, citing a lack of information.

The application has drawn strong criticism from many in the area, who have expressed issues with odour, noise, the potential to attract vermin, as well as a potential increased risk of psittacosis, a potentially fatal bacteria passed on to humans from birds.

Although an initial application for about 300 pigeons on the sight was reduced to 140, the application to allow animal husbandry and the lofts constructed on the site has caused much dismay in the neighbourhood.

Thirty nine objections have been issued to council.

Speaking to council, neighbours Garry Jones and Susan Sypkens said such a proposal is inappropriate for the neighbourhood.

Although not against keeping pigeons as a hobby, Mr Jones said numerous issues needed to be addressed.

“These are show pigeons, big pigeons about the size of bantam hens. Why should 140 show pigeons be treated any different to 140 bantam hens? Or 140 pet show rats,” he said.

“The Dandenong Ranges has one of the highest rates of notified psittacosis infection in the world. In humans, this can cause severe disablement and death.

“While the pigeons may seem outwardly healthy, they can be carriers.”

Mr Jones also expressed issues with the design of the lofts and the application.

Neighbour Sue Sypkens said on many occasions she had experienced an offensive odour, due to the small number of pigeons already at the

residence. She feared the odour from 140 pigeons would be overwhelming.

“For some months, I’ve been enduring increasing unpleasant fecal odours from eight or more pigeons currently kept in makeshifts sheds,” she said.

“When wind blows from that direction, it means I can’t even open windows on the affected side of my house. There’s also a risk of pulmonary disease for me and my young grandchildren.

“This is intensive poultry farming, not just hobby pets. If this application is approved, it sets a precedent to keep a large number of livestock in residential zones.”

However, applicant Chris Shannon maintained smells were not an issue.

“Personally, I don’t believe there’s an odour. If anyone wants to come around and have a look, a smell ... there’s no odour,” he said.

Mr Shannon also denied there would be any issues with increased vermin, or risk of psittacosis due to unhygienic practices.

“I clean it regularly, at least twice a week, all the time ... all the stuff that comes out goes straight into a bag, then sealed into a container.

So it’s all nice and clean and nothing can get into it.”

However, council deemed there was insufficient information to make a decision, with mayor Noel Cliff moving a motion which essentially saw the matter deferred.

“This has got to be refused tonight ... and I feel (we need to) go away and look at it. There are so many unanswered questions here on this application. Odour, vermin,” Cr Cliff said.

“This is a serious issue and I would like to see it answered properly.

“This project had started before the application was put in to council; we have buildings put up ... that’s not a good way for us to go about an issue that’s going to be contentious with neighbours.”

House on last legs

By Derek Schlennstedt Confusion surrounds the future of the Cockatoo Neighbourhood House after internal reports that the house would close due to a funding shortfall.

In a Facebook post by the Cockatoo Neighbourhood House on 25 October, reports were confirmed that the community house would close on 6 December, 2017.

Though, the committee was looking at solutions to keep the Cockatoo Neighbourhood House

from closing.

The post attributed the closure to ‘a lack of funding,’ which ‘has made it very difficult to run.’

It also stated that the lack of funding was exacerbated when Cardinia Shire, did not provide funding to the Cockatoo Neighbourhood House for the new financial year.

“The Cardinia Shire did not give CNH any funding for the new financial year making our financial situation worse,” the post stated.

In brief Suspected road rage

However, a post two days later on 27 October stated that the Cockatoo Neighbourhood House was ‘not closing down,’ and that it was ‘about to undertake a revitalisation process’.

Cardinia Shire has been approached for comment.

A Special General Meeting followed by a Q&A session will be held on Thursday, 23 November at 7.30pm at the Cockatoo Neighbourhood House.

An Emerald woman in her fifties is in a stable condition after being hit by a car in what may be a road-rage incident.

Lilydale detectives are appealing for witnesses who may have seen a road rage incident on Monday 23 October about 1.20pm when a woman towing a horse float was hit by a car on MonbulkEmerald Road near Stewart Road.

The woman was flown to The Alfred hospital in a serious condition with suspected fractures, abrasions and bruising.

Yarra Ranges crime investigation unit detective Senior Constable Danielle Fleming said police were investigating an altercation between drivers of a grey ASX Mitsubishi SUV and a Toyota Prado towing a horse float.

Police report that the incident commenced on Belgrave-Gembrook Road and continued through Emerald and then along Emerald-Monbulk Road concluding around Stewart Road.

Both drivers are co-operating with police and assisting with the investigation.

Ferntree Gully shooting Victoria Police are hunting an armed man and a group of his associates after shots were fired in Ferntree Gully on 29 October around 2.45pm.

The reason for the altercation remains unclear, but it is reported that a 17-year-old teen was threatened and that he and a group of assailants fled the scene.

Police believe that the shots were likely fired into the air, rather than at a particular target. However, it has aslo been reported that some neighbours believe at least one person was left bleeding at the scene, evidenced from blood found on a resident's car.

Healthy hills culture proves a highlight

By Peter Douglas Burrinja Cultural Centre played host to a Yarra Ranges Council meeting on Tuesday 24 October, as part of a bid to take ‘council on the road’.

After meetings in Healesville, Warburtorn and Montrose, the ‘travelling council’ team stopped off at the hills, with a healthy gathering turning out for the occasion.

The Upwey-Tecoma Bowls Club, The Hills Food Frontier and the Dandenong Ranges Music Council (DRMC) were among the local groups to present before the historic meeting.

Local icon and former Shire of Sherbrooke president Betty Marsden was an apology.

All groups presented a background of their achievements and present plans, while also praising their collaboration with the council.

The Hills Food Frontier (THFF) group provided a highlight when they delivered an impromptu song about broccoli and the benefits of

eating healthy.

Daniyela Rob said THFF had enjoyed a productive relationship with council.

“We thank the shire for their ongoing support.

Not just through grants, but (councillors) Noel Cliff and Mike Clarke often attend our meetings,” she said.

“The Hills Food Frontier has been going on for three years, started by an amazing group of women. Our vision is to see the Dandenong Ranges as an inspirational and sustainable food destination for Australia.”

Meanwhile, Jim McArthur from Upwey-Tecoma Bowls Club spoke of the club’s plans for future development and ongoing viability.

Mr McArthur called on council support for their application for Victorian Government funding.

Among the plans included three stages of development, which includes planting out a large, unused grass area; updating and replacing the

synthetic greens and upgrading club amenities.

“Once completed, the club’s playing facilities will be certainly the best in the eastern ranges area, it’ll be a destination club for new members and players.”

Mr McArthur said the first two stages would cost about $350,000, with the club well-placed to contribute half the costs.

From the DRMC, Ted O’Hare explained the positive impact the group had on the community.

“Music has a binding effect on people and the community. We work with the community quite significantly, such as the Breast Beaters Group, which helps those who are battling breast cancer,” he said.

“It reaches many different ages, with our oldest member a 97-year-old who plays saxophone, to a two-year-old who plays the violin.

“The DRMC has been the foundation for many successful composers, directors and musicians.”

Belgrave police are appealing for witnesses to a road rage incident that occurred on 28 October at 9.50pm in Tecoma near Upwey High School.

On Saturday, a family were driving home along Burwood Highway, when there was an altercation between another car on the road.

As they travelled through Upwey, a male in his mid-forties driving a late model, dark coloured Ford Falcon utility stopped ahead of them and approached the family carrying an iron bar.

The family had to take evasive action in their car, driving on the opposite side of the road to get away, and were followed by the vehicle to the Belgrave police station.

The alleged offender is described as having light brown hair, and a short stature and is believed to be in his forties.

Nearly four times the limit On 20 October, Olinda police apprehended a 36-year-old female driver in Sassafras who gave a breath test reading of 0.194 - almost four times the legal limit.

The driver’s license was immediately suspended for a period of 12 months and the driver will attend Ringwood Magistrate’s Court at a later date.

Olinda police Sergeant Andrew Herdman said they would be conducting more random breath tests in the lead-up to summer, which coincides with school leavers and holiday goers.

“We’ll be conducting more breath tests over the coming months and over the holiday period as we hope to reduce road accidents,” Sgt Herdman said.

Goodbye from mayor Noel Cliff

This column is my last as mayor of the Yarra Ranges, ahead of the mayoral election meeting on Tuesday, 14 November.

From the moment I got this job, I’ve wanted to create a more harmonious feeling between council and the community, listening to residents’ views and representing them and council.

Though I came into the role after a period of massive change, in terms of the council elections, I feel confident in saying that I’ve been successful.

We’ve had many achievements during the last year.

less groups in the Yarra Valley, there are so many residents and groups doing wonderful volunteer work to help their communities.

This year, we released a vision and values statement, developed off the back of 3000 responses from community members; this highlighted the importance of community connections, vibrant culture, accessible services and protecting the natural environment.

The statement is the collective voice of the Yarra Ranges and will be a roadmap for us to inform our decision making.

I’m proud to have been mayor for the release of our latest budget and council plan, which actively represent the values the community identified.

We have an especially strong team of councillors and I look forward to welcoming the new mayor and deputy mayor to the role on 14 November.

Mayor to make way for the next

By Peter Douglas Cr Noel Cliff is only too content to hand over the mayoral robes next month, satisfied he’s ticked off all his ambitions during his inaugural 12-month term.

As Yarra Ranges Council prepares to vote on a new mayor on Tuesday 14 November, Cr Cliff said he had thoroughly enjoyed his first stint as mayor after more than 15 years on council.

Chief among his goals included “bringing council back to the community”, which he said was achieved through taking council on the road and via the Mayor’s Big Day Out event.

Both exceeded his own expectations, with the travelling council initiative stopping by at Healesville, Warburton, Montrose and Upwey.

The Mayor’s Big Day Out was enormously successful, attracting hundreds of guests.

Speaking after his final meeting as mayor - at Burrinja Cultural Centre on Tuesday 24 October - Cr Cliff said he wanted to show a different side to council.

“When I got this role, the only thing I wanted to do was bring council back to the community,” Cr Cliff said.

“I felt there was a void. I wanted to make the community and staff know that councillors can be warm and welcome. I’m no robot and definitely not about toeing the mayoral line.”

Cr Cliff said he wouldn’t have been able to achieve so much without the support of his fellow councillors and Yarra Ranges Council staff.

He said the behind-the-scenes work to ensure both initiatives ran smoothly was first-class.

“What a ripper the Mayor’s Day Out was. That exceeded my wildest dreams. To have so many musicians and people turn out for the day. It was just fantastic to see,” Cr Cliff said.

Cr Cliff also acknowledged the support of his close friend and deputy mayor, Len Cox. Interestingly, Cr Cliff felt a 12-month mayoral term ideal, despite the Victorian Government pushing for a mandatory two years.

He said many councillors deserved the experience and it added leadership to council.

At the Burrinja meeting, Cr Tony Stevenson

was among the most vocal when expressing his congratulations to Cr Cliff.

“Your initiative to take council on the road ... has been well received by each of the townships,” Cr Stevenson said.

“People may feel that council is quite insular, removed from the public, even though that’s clearly not our aim. I feel what you’ve done will help break down those barriers.”

Cr Stevenson said he had not heard a negative word about the initiatives.

Our council meetings on the road involved holding council meetings in Healesville, Montrose, Warburton and Upwey, making council more accessible for residents out of our urban areas.

Last month’s Mayor’s Big Day Out brought together more than 200 musicians and performers for a free community day, accessible to families and residents of all abilities.

There have been achievements in the community, with successful advocacy for Eastern Community Legal Centre and School Focused Youth Service funding from the federal and state governments, to recently securing an ABC Radio re-broadcasting antenna in the Warburton Valley.

The role of mayor is a privileged position and I’ve been able to meet so many community members, groups and young people making a difference in the Yarra Ranges.

Belgrave CFA will send 45 goodwill packages to servicemen overseas, and is urging residents to do the same in the lead up to Christmas.

By Derek Schlennstedt In recent years, members of Belgrave Fire Brigade have joined the Australian Defence Force and served in the Middle East-with some still serving overseas.

Life for all service personnel can be tough, but the strain can be eased by the familiar “mail call”, especially if that call is a parcel from home.

So, to ease that strain Belgrave Fire Brigade is in the process of putting together 45 “goodwill” parcels, to be sent to the Middle East area of operations just in time for Christmas.

The fire brigade has two members currently serving in the air force and navy, and is hoping to send them some comforts from home, and are urging residents to do the same.

Belgrave Brigade spokesperson and firefighter Kirstin Cross said that the packages could be simple; food-related items, as well as other items to help servicemen ‘feel a little better’ and ‘lift their spirits’.

“Packages only need to be simple things like small tins of tuna, Tim Tams, rice crackers or similar and maybe sweets of some sort,” Kirstin said.

“Goodwill packages could include personal care items such as chapsticks or hand cleansers, all good for helping feel a little better in the field.”

Depending on the branch of the service, those donating items can also specify whether navy, army or air force and even male or female when addressing the carton.

To keep within weight and cubic limits, the brigade has found it best to use the Australia Post Office Box Carton ‘BX2-310x225x102mm’, which can be picked up from any Australia Post office.

Packages weighing 2kg or less and posted between November and 9 December will be shipped for free, and there is no limit to the number of parcels you can send.

Kirstin added that a small note to the recipient, something handwritten and personal would also make “a world of difference“to those on the other side of the world.

Parcels should be addressed: Australian Service Person (Navy/Army/Air Force, Male/Female, if you wish), AFPO 20, Australian Defence Force, NSW, 2890.

The annual event - organised by the Rotary Club of Emerald and District at Gembrook’s Puffing Billy station - provides a chance for children aged from three to 12 to run alongside Thomas the Tank Engine while also raising some muchneeded funds for young people their age in a less fortunate position.

Later this month, the Berwick-based Insight - an education centre for the blind and vision impaired - will receive some much-needed financial assistance from the fun run.

In the recent past, the Cerebral Palsy Education Centre and the William Angliss hospital have also benefitted.

Cockatoo Primary School student Jayden Regan is just eight years old, but this year’s fun run will be his fifth alongside the iconic railway. In his four events so far, he has raised a staggering $3289.50 - all towards a great cause.

“To all the people out there reading this, if you have a child or you are a child, you should enter the run,” he said.

“If you are a child you should ask your mum or dad if you can enter.”

The event is already reaching far and wide across the state, too.

Insight principal Timothy Hemphill has twin daughters at Catholic Ladies’ College in Eltham - Madeleine and Juliette - who are also getting involved.

“My involvement in this event mainly centres around the Disability Justice League, which is a (school) program or support group which is essentially students supporting students,” Madeleine said.

“The aim is to get students like myself involved in issues concerning the disabled, par-

ticularly through Insight Education and first and foremost the event - the fun run.

“I hope to get students to donate for the kids to run - it’s $20 per student - but also to get a few of the girls to help guide some of the (Insight) students as well.

“The main reason why I started this group is that I’ve always had a passion about the disabled.

Ever since I was younger, I believed that it was such an important issue in the community, and I believe these students should be supported by those who understand.”

Ferny Creek’s Donalea Patman officially received her Medal of the Order of Australia on Friday 20 October at Government House, in recognition for her services to animal welfare.

Founder of For the Love of Wildlife, Ms Patman began working with the Australian Government in 2014 to impact on the plight of Africa’s lions.

Just 18 months later, Australia became the first country in the world to ban the import of lion trophies and body parts.

Since then, France and the Netherlands have followed Australia by banning the import of lion trophies.

Mr Patman shared her outrage for not only the welfare of Africa’s lions, but also the exploitation of Australia’s youth who unknowingly participate in the canned hunting industry.

“I had approached government to act on behalf of our youth who were being duped into participating in the canned hunting industry,” Ms Patman said.

“Volunteers pay up to US$1000 a week to hand-raise what they believe to be orphaned cubs, thinking they will be re-introduced into the wild when they are old enough.

“No true conservation project would allow people to interact with cubs as they can never be released into the wild. These cubs are just one part of the cycle of breeding lions to be shot for canned hunting,” she said.

Ms Patman worked closely with her local MP, Jason Wood, to implement the ban, who she described as being shocked and appalled about canned hunting when he was made aware of the industry.

Stroke can’t stop tenor note

By Derek Schlennstedt A Kilsyth tenor is repaying the people who helped him when he had a stroke by performing an opera concert to raise funds for The Eastern Health Stroke Foundation.

Charles De Long, an accomplished Opera tenor and singing teacher, has enjoyed a lifetime of singing opera, and as someone who sings “everywhere and anywhere,” it was a concern when in May, he found it difficult to say a single word.

The 82-year-old tenor said that he found himself struggling to communicate with people in his community - an inability to talk properly often the first sign of a blood clot blockage in the brain.

“In May I couldn’t speak, and was in hospital for a month,” he said.

“I couldn’t speak for three days when I had the stroke.”

“The three hospitals that looked after me and treated me so well ... upon my discharge I said to them, ‘as a token of appreciation I would like to give something back.’”

Mr De Long spent some of his time at the Angliss Hospital in Upper Ferntree Gully - part of Eastern Health.

He said that he was afraid and uncertain whether he would still be able to

sing following the stroke.

Only five months later, the veteran tenor is on song and practising classics such as Nessun Dorma.

“I have been doing it so extensively and so often that it comes naturally and automatically - I find it hard to speak, but not hard to sing.”

Although a stroke can have debilitating effects, the 82-year-old has not let it slow him down, and to show his appreciation for the care he received at Eastern Health, the tenor is hosting a concert on 4 November in Kilsyth.

That concert will feature gems and excerpts from Grand Opera, operettas, musicals and light classics, and Mr De Long will perform works from Verdi, Puccini, Mozart and Bizet.

The performance will include a focus on those who served in war and there will also be a tribute to Dame Nellie Melba.

“We start off the concert singing the Australia Anthem and then there will be a minute’s silence ... then the fun starts,” he said.

The concert will be held on 4 November at Kilsyth Memorial Hall at 4pm.

Tickets are $30, and there is also cheese and wine at 3pm.

The inaugural Halloween on the Green event attracted young families from across the Dandenong Ranges keen to dress up in their spookiest raiment and enjoy the lovely warm weather.

The festivities included Mayor of Yarra Ranges Noel Cliff getting dunked into a vat of water, face painting, a silent auction and various free carnival rides for the kids.

Andrew Fillip-Gautier organiser of the event and member of The Philanthropic Collective de-

scribed it as a “wonderful success story” with the free activities allowing everyone to enjoy the day.

“It was incredible; I think the most amazing thing was that it regalvanised the community,” he said.

“I had a lot of parents coming and thanking us for the free activities ... if the rides hadn’t been free a lot of families told me they couldn’t have afforded to go.”

“The Philanthropic collective is about that ... so many families face hardship and the reason we want to do things like this is to provide somewhere for these families to all come together and enjoy.”

Multi-genre hills event Belgrave’s beautiful Birdsland Reserve is set to host one of the most remarkable events to hit the region in recent times, the hillsceneLIVE 2017.

“Experiencing and interpreting the Yarra Ranges based purely on the sonic information recorded from a particular location sonically re-

flects what it means to live in such a vibrant and rich landscape,” Rod said.

Matt Riley and collaborator Troy Innocent continue their exploration of Epiphyte (first presented at hillsceneLIVE 2016), combining digital mapping and play in natural surroundings, where audiences engage in an augmented reality bushwalk.

At the conclusion of the walk, each player’s collection of ‘seeds’ transforms into a unique animated composition of sound and image, which is shared with others.

The experience combines map, visualisation and journey, inviting contemplation of the inter-

relationships between people, play, technology and movement.

In addition, workshops, critical conversations, improvised shorts, guided walk and planting on site - and a ‘free’ community dinner - is also a highlight of the festival.

With a shuttle bus running from Upwey train station over the weekend, you can drive, walk or take public transport to the festival.

“Technically brilliant; a cheeky look; telling a story,” Judge Amy Middleton said of the portraiture.

Chambers dates out One of Australia’s most loved and accomplished performers, Kasey Chambers, has just announced the final tour dates for her ARIA No.1 album, ‘Dragonfly’, including at the York on Lilydale, Mount Evelyn, on Saturday 25 November.

“It’s fantastic when furniture is restored to its former glory,” Luke said, “or to bring an old piece alive with a more modern look.”

With so much experience, and so many projects under his belt, Luke is only too happy to offer advice and suggestions to his clients.

Luke said his finished, refurbished works often became the

centrepieces of many homes.

On some occasions, these pieces could often have sentimental value for families, which was why the result was worth the time and effort.

Tigers’ big bite too good for any Shark FTGDCA Upwey have prevailed for the first time this season in their encounter with Johnson Park, as Cameron Wheeler ran riot with both bat and ball against the Sharks.

Currently in the process of re-inventing himself as a batsman with a bowling problem, Wheeler tamed the Johnson Park attack with 4/45 from his overs, on the back of his 73 the week before.

David Carman provided support for the Tigers with 3/24 as the Sharks were dismissed for 145, well short of the required 278 set by Upwey.

Robbie Cox (45) and Julian Whetstone (30) were the only noted contributors towards the target. A spirited showing by Jonathan Levell and Aaron Brunner wasn’t enough to get Belgrave over the line in their match against Mountain Gate.

United at the crease with the score at 1/42, chasing the Gators’ 7/304, Levell (93) and Brunner (85) put on 135 runs for the second wicket, however, a determined bowling attack found a breakthrough in the 52nd over, with Kevin Atacador the main protagonist claiming 5/65 as the visitors scored their first points of the season.

Knoxfield’s game plan of restricting run chases was at it’s best again against Eildon Park, with the Knights remaining undefeated this season.

Steve Pimm’s 62 was the only batting highlight for the Panthers in their reply of 168, with Jake Taylor adding 3/20 from his time with the pill in hand.

Ferntree Gully atoned for last week’s batting performance against The Basin, however, the result did not go their way as the home team held on.

Dismissed for 144 and the overnight score requiring just 47 more runs across the afternoon, the Blues started in the best possible way with a first up wicket.

The Bears found runs hard-going as Bryce Galvin (3/30) and Tim Parker (3/21) were restrictive while claiming vital wickets.

Ferntree Gully’s resolve strengthened as the target approached, with the crescendo being a ninth wicket with three runs still required.

The Basin managed to scrape past to deny Ferntree Gully of an unlikely victory after last week’s scoreline, thanks in part to Blake Walter (37) and Jayden Turncinovic (34).

Closing out Norm Reeves Shield for the round, Upper Ferntree Gully proved too good for Knox Gardens, chasing the target down with two wickets in hand.

For the Falcons, Adam Metherall (3/43) and Scott McInnerny (3/46) toiled away with sound performances.

South Belgrave surprised a few by claiming the points over Lysterfield. Nathan Hicks (46) and Adam Kinniburgh (45) were the mainstays of the Beaver’s innings, however were only able to tally 132 - well short of South’s 215.

After claiming first innings points last week, Monbulk continued against Olinda to 197 with thanks to Shane Cosstick’s 55 and an unbeaten 45 from Tom Taylor.

For Olinda, Chris Brown (3/16) and Dominic Woodfield (3/56) ensured it would not be a long day in the field. Olinda then batted time to reach 5/141 at close, Tim Scott again in the runs with 44.

Andrew Evans (47) was the shining light for the Saints in their reply, however were eventually rolled for 185 to concede the points to the Griffins.

Ferntree Gully Footballers lead proceedings in Decoite Shield from Monbulk in close range as Rowville, South Belgrave, Olinda and Lysterfield look to build on successes so far this season, while St Johns Tecoma and Knoxfield will seek to join the winners list in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, the Local Cricket Show will preview all of the upcoming Twenty20 weekend matches, with Ryan Handley and Mark Teofilo from Ferntree Gully joining the team at Radio Eastern 98.1 FM at 8am on Saturday 4 November.

Awards for Rangers’ best and fairest Monbulk Rangers Soccer Club presented its key awards for 2017 at the recent Senior Presentation night.

Steve Racz took home the award for Club Person of the Year for his commitment as a coach, committee member and maintenance manager.

Great start to season for Hawks MONBULK CRICKET After three rounds, the Monbulk firsts, thirds, fourths and Under 16s all remain undefeated.

The firsts enjoyed a big win over new local rival Olinda, with skipper Shane Cosstick making 55 and taking an amazing eight catches for the match.

Jason Fraser took eight wickets for the match and young Tommy Taylor made a terrific 45 not out.

The seconds also had a big win over Olinda to open their account for the season on the back of Aaron Gillard’s maiden century last week.

The thirds achieved a rare outright win with a great team performance.

Not too many wins in the juniors this week, but lots of great individual achievements and fun had by all the young Hawks.

No junior matches next weekend due to the Melbourne Cup weekend, but the seniors are hosting Twenty20 matches versus St Johns-Tecoma on Saturday.

The seconds start at 12.30pm followed by the firsts at the main ground.

Zane cracks new high jump record YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS Zane Wheeler finally broke the club Open High Jump record this weekend.

After several near misses over the past few weeks at the record height of 1.85m, Zane cleared the new club record height in unfavourable windy conditions at Werribee on Saturday afternoon.

Zane broke the Open record which has stood since 2012.

Round 4 of AV Shield was held at Knox and Werribee tracks on Saturday.

Some 32 club athletes competed with many outstanding performances.

MONBULK BOWLS Monbulk’s Tuesday Division 2 side had an excellent win against Warburton by 31 shots - 79 to 48.

Peter Koomen’s rink achieved the ultimate when they had an eight-shot score on one end, which is rarely heard of and is similar to a hattrick in cricket.

The other players in this rink were Les Bigelow, Doreen Edwards and Max Cobb.

This rink won 38 to 10, Eric Markham’s rink won 23 to 14 and Jenny Holmes went down 18 to 24.

The Division 3 side played a strong Mulgrave away from home and lost 45 to 76.

Ted Tratt lost 16 to 25, Eric Furby went down by 19 shots and Peter Donders lost narrowly 17 to 20.

The Division 4 side also travelled to Mulgrave and went down 50 to 61.

Peter Francis won by 1 shot 19 to 18. Ray Pike lost by the same one shot margin 19 to 20 and Lorraine McLaren went down 12 to 23.

The Saturday Division 2 Monbulk 1 team had a good win at home against Heathmont with two rinks up 80 to 70.

Eric Markham won by 17 shots 24 to 7.

Brian Smith won 25 to 16 while Andrew Bell went down by 3 shots and Richard Cookson lost by 13 shots.

Monbulk 2 had a huge win against Ringwood by 73 shots.

Lorraine McLaren won by 17 shots and Peter Francis won by 15 shots.

The blow-out of the day was on Eric Furby’s rink where they won by 41 shots 44 to 3. This means this team is top of the ladder in this section.
