LONG TAN AWARD Australian Defence Force Long Tan Youth Leadership and Teamwork Award started in 2006 to recognise students who demonstrate leadership and teamwork within both the school and the broader local community. They also recognise those who display strong values, such as doing one’s best, respect for others and “mateship”, characteristics that are integral to Australian society. The award is an important initiative by the Australian Government in conjunction with the Australian Defence Force designed to encourage senior students – tomorrow’s leaders – to actively participate in the life of their schools and local communities. In 2007 some 2100 schools participated. The number of schools participating today is over 2250.

The Battle of Long Tan holds a special place in the hearts and minds of Australians.

In recognition of one of the defining moments in Australian military history, in August 2006 the then Prime Minister announced that it would be fitting to name the awards the ‘ADF Long Tan Youth Leadership & Teamwork Awards’.

It is also a fitting tribute to the Long Tan veterans, as the very traits they demonstrated such as determination, mateship, teamwork, tenacity, compassion and leadership, are the same attributes we hope to encourage and recognise in students. Major Terry Fulton congratulated Justyn Green of Year 12 for his outstanding efforts in raising awareness in mental health issues. After experiencing loss of those close to him, Justyn decided to raise awareness and funds for Headspace. Justyn used his interest as a DJ, nine months ago to organise a live music event in Geelong to help raise money for Headspace Geelong and awareness around the serious issues related to mental health. Through this event he raised over $2,000. Justyn’s plight does not end there, early next year he and fellow students Brad Carlton and Josh Sloan will be riding to Sydney to once again raise some much needed funds for Headspace Geelong and hopefully continue to raise awareness about mental illness. MacKillop College wishes him every success in his future endeavours.

St Monica’s College, Epping ST MONICA’S College, Epping was established in 1964 as a girls’ school. This served a specific purpose at that time. In the 1970’s the Sisters of the Good Samaritan, local clergy and parishioners saw a real need for boys’ Catholic Education thus in 1978 St Monica’s College, Epping proudly became coeducational. Our school has flourished ever since.

In all of our local Primary schools (Government and Catholic) coeducation is offered. In all tertiary institutions (universities and TAFES etc.) coeducation is the only way education is provided.

I argue that all education is delivered at its best through coeducation.

Why? There are many reasons why I contend that the coeducation choice Monican parents have made for their children is the right one. Being together throughout the day, feelings of comradeship and friendships develop in a natural way between girls and boys. This mutual feeling and uplifting experiences are inherently valuable to the fully rounded person. These friendships emerge through shared experiences in classrooms, from participating in shared activities outside the formal curriculum, and through shared membership in clubs and teams.

Coeducation assists significantly in breaking down sexist attitudes in both genders. Boys and girls learn in a natural classroom environment, not sheltered away from each other, and in this normal way appropriate respect ought to develop between the genders. In the coeducational classroom, both female and male perspectives are explored, thus greater understanding between the sexes, more consideration of points of view, and increased development of individuals both intellectually and socially.

Truly, coeducation reflects 100% the diversity of society. Coeducation, in other words, IS the real world. Accordingly, students are better prepared to enter the workforce, more capable of coping in post-secondary educational institutions, and more confident to involve themselves in discussions and activities with the opposite sex.

Of course they are because they have mixed and grown up with the opposite sex from kindergarten years.

Coeducation at its Best” I believe that girls are more confident to express their views on all manner of things in their daily life in a coeducational College and exactly the same applies to boys. Students feel comfortable in whom they are and the chances are many to develop healthy and positive attitudes and selfimage. Let us hope that this in turn reduces harassment and bullying.

Coeducation is popular throughout the world and a chief reason for this is that it allows for greater socialisation, wider diversity of experiences and fewer gender stereotypes for young people. This can only be healthy, good, and most desirable. It could be stated that collaboration between the sexes, not separation, fosters equality. In a coeducational setting, students are exposed to both male and female role models, students learn to lead the opposite sex in all types of situations, and finding a group of friends to match up with is easier.

There are myths associated with coeducation just as there are with single sex education. These should all be dispelled as we come down to the one, most critical reality – humans live in a coeducational world and consequently enjoying the coeducation experience in school years should form a holistic person, confident and wise.

Schoolboy’s Stratospheric Rise YEAR 12 Berwick Campus student Bryce Peatling has become a media sensation after successfully recording GoPro footage from near space as part of his Year 12 project.

Bryce has featured on Channel 7 news, the Sunrise program, and the radio where he described how he launched a camera to 21,000 metres using a weather balloon and GPS trackers to retrieve it.

“I think the response has been pretty crazy definitely a very different experience,” said Bryce about all the recent media attention.

The project idea, to gain photographic images from the stratosphere, quickly became a major task involving hours of paperwork to seek approval from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

Finding the optimal weather and location to launch was also a challenge. The final location chosen was Elmore, to the north-east of Bendigo, Victoria.

“I had so many doubts; the kids at school were like ‘this is never going to work’.”

Bryce said his biggest concern was retrieving the camera (on loan from a friend), but luck was on his side. The balloon rose to 21,000 metres,

where the temperature was -72 degrees Celsius, burst, then fell to earth just an hour’s drive away. It landed in the driveway of a farmhouse.

Bryce rushed to retrieve the images from the camera and said he couldn’t believe the results.

“I am still blown away by the outcome,” he said.

“I just wanted to capture the blackness of space and the blueness of the atmosphere and that’s what I got.”

When Bryce sat down to plan his project, he said he had three main ideas in mind - he wanted to do something different, something risky, and something interesting.

He well and truly ticked those boxes.

His media teacher Nick Zomer said when Bryce initially approached him with the idea he encouraged him to go for it.

“This type of project held significant challenges in the pre-production and launching phases, but to finally see the footage and imagery that has come from it is a real testament to Bryce’s resilience to continue to push boundaries creatively,” Mr Zomer said.

“I’m confident that the finished imagery, once edited in post-production, will be stunning.”

Bacchus Marsh Grammar Commitment to the core development of numeracy and literacy skills.

At Years 9 and 10 students are able to pursue a range of options to complement a commitment to the core development of numeracy and literacy skills. Some of the exciting new options available for students at Year 9 next year include: 3D Printing, Flight Technology, Mechatronics and Hospitality.

The school treats Year 10 to 12 as a block for the purposes of curriculum. This means that students have considerable control and choice over the curriculum they choose at Year 10 and also the ability to undertake accelerated VCE studies with ease.

At Years 11 and 12 the school offers an extremely wide range of VCE options. It has made the conscious decision to specialise in the provision of VCE and provide as many options within that framework as possible. This sees it offer over 40 different subjects at both Year 11 and 12. This variety gives students a real chance to tailor subject choices towards post school careers and pathways. The school believes that the VCE is a robust certificate ideal for entry to Australian Universities but equally well recognised overseas for those who may have aspirations to study outside of Australia.

The size of the school’s VCE cohort also means that multiple classes of many subjects are available, removing many of the issues of timetabling clashes that can reduce choice in smaller schools and cohorts.

In 2018 Bacchus Marsh Grammar will have approximately 310 in the final two years of school.

This size of senior community is almost ideal for providing the best mix of choice for students but also maintaining appropriate pastoral care and support for all students.

Our more academic students perform at the very highest levels, but the School is exceptionally proud of the way in which our ‘middle’ students achieve outcomes greater than that which they originally expected.

Our students overwhelmingly move into tertiary education on the completion of their secondary schooling, with over 90% being offered their first choice through VTAC. They are to be found in almost all Universities and TAFE Colleges in Victoria, and increasingly interstate and overseas, as well as in numerous private and more specialised tertiary providers.

Every year upon graduation, the lasting impressions left by the departing students is that they have had a great and varied time at school, have been taught and supported well through their good and bad times, and now they move on with hope and confidence, as well as being in possession of the skills, knowledge and habits they will need as they move into a future of their own making.

Our students’ academic results are strong; 95% of our Year 12 students have gone onto tertiary education. In 2016 Caroline Chisholm Catholic College achieved a median study score of 30 for the first time. This indicates our students are achieving stronger results in their VCE studies than ever before. Dreaming the Impossible Dream Grossek’s view MY FATHER and I sat in a small office, nondescript in many ways, save for the clutter and sense of urgency that pervaded the atmosphere on that hot and humid January day. The teacher hustled about the room, shuffling papers and wiping the sweat from his brow. This was a big day for me.

The following week I was about to start secondary school and my father was enrolling me at the local high school - at the time a prestigious country high school, affectionately known as The School on the Hill. The hilltop address of the high school was shared with the local technical school, though it was never referred to as such, that title belonged exclusively to the high school.

Despite sharing a geographical site, not much else was shared between the schools as far as I can recollect. Oh, from time to time, on occasions when our attention wandered from our studies, we were curtly reminded that it was a privilege to be attending the school on the hill, and that privilege could easily be forfeited were we not to refocus on our studies. The consequence? We would complete our studies at the technical school, with the clear inference being that any plans we may have had for attending university would be dashed. That was the sixties!

Fast forward to the eighties, by which time I was at the beginning of my career in senior leadership roles at a medium sized suburban primary school in Melbourne. Our school council president, a former AFL champion player and in retirement, a sports teacher at a prestigious private school introduced me to the brutality by which such schools massaged their reputations. Back then, he revealed, Year 12 students at that school did not only complete their studies at that school but in addition had to ‘earn the right’ to sit their Year 12 exams as a student of that school. Those that didn’t? Well, they were off to the Exhibition Building in the city, sitting their Year 12 exams most certainly, but just as certainly not as students of that particular private school. They sat as public students, belonging to no-one as it were and they would have known it.

Thirty years have passed and what’s changed?

If the current debates that swirl around us in the

media are any indication, very little that is good has occurred. Newspaper headlines such as; The reason schools lock students out of the VCE, ‘I deserve another chance’: the student no school wants, and ‘They thought I’d become a tradie’: Why schools lock students out of VCE, paint an alarming picture of current secondary school practice in some schools.

What is driving this problematic trend in education? Back in the sixties as far as I can recollect headlines such as those appearing in our newspapers in recent times were non-existent. It would appear that the practice of ‘dissuading’ students from sitting their VCE exams and encouraging them to seek the vocational alternative, the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is a more recent strategy. Then there’s the ‘option’ provided by some schools to have students opt for an unscored VCE. That is, complete their VCE without receiving an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), meaning that in effect they do not sit the end of year VCE examinations. Judging by the commentary, several possibilities would be at play in this trend.

Advocates for broadening the types of assessment options available to Year 12 students, vehemently dismiss claims that the intent of the exercise is to embellish schools VCE results.

Rather, they argue, it is aimed at ensuring that students for whom a tertiary course at university is not a realistic option, stay at school longer, suffer less pointless stress in their final years of secondary schooling and undertake courses better suited to their talents and interests. This makes eminent sense. After all, most jobs in the workforce do not require a university degree.

There’s plenty of evidence indicating that early school leavers and, by that, here it is meant those students who drop out from secondary school as soon as it is legally appropriate to do so, too often slip through the workforce gaps, remaining unemployed for far too long for anyone’s good.

Then there’s the not inconsiderable issue of aspiration and hope - while at school, students still have hope, more hope I daresay of completing some sort of qualification that will lead to a worthwhile career. The contemporary film, Moonlight, which incidentally was awarded the CONTINUED PAGE 36

Grade 5 Full Day CSC Program: During Term 4, students from Grade 5 will have the opportunity to attend the College for a full school day as part of the ‘Introduction to Secondary Schooling’ Program. Students will be transported to the College, where they will participate in a modified curriculum program covering subjects such as Maths, English, Science, Art, Textiles, Health and Physical Education, Food Technology and Woodwork.

Students will be provided with an interactive information session about secondary schooling and the transition program, whilst meeting the College staff. There are also an Information Night and several school tours in May for both students and Parents.

Yr 7 Transition: The College will ensure a smooth transition for each student. Pastoral Care teachers can be contacted to discuss effective strategies if any issues arise in the initial transition process.

The Pastoral Care teacher is the key contact for parents throughout the whole year.

EMBRACING THE EDUCATION REVOLUTION In 2011, with its first Year 7 classes, Good News Lutheran College visibly began the journey from small primary school to a much larger P-12 College. What is the International Baccalaureate?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a set of four educational programmes offered by the IB Organisation to students aged 3-19, which focus on providing academic breadth rather than specialisation into particular areas. For GNLC, the two programmes that it will look to deliver are: • The Primary Years Programme (PYP), to teach children aged 3-12 how to be an inquirer both within and outside the classroom environment; couraging • The Middle Years Programme (MYP), a five-year programme for students aged 11-16 encouraging them to make practical connections between their education and the real world.

“Our goal is to be running the PYP from Prep through to Year 5, with the MYP covering Year 6 to Year 10,” Principal Simon Hughes said.

“IB programmes aim to provide a series of rigorous, challenging and unique curriculums to authorised schools, focusing on developing students to be internationally-minded individuals and promote students’ participation in global society.

“The ‘Learner Profile’ sets out 10 attributes which IB-accredited schools strive to pass on to students, in order to promote this goal, which include being open-minded, caring, reflective and curious.”

All students learn differently, and consequently there may be benefits in enabling them to choose a programme that best suits their individual strengths and preferences. The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a non-profit education foundation. The IB e in a complex courses focus on total growth of the developing child and GNLC believes its students live lso from world where learning and development arise not only from the school environment, but also aptur tures family and home and the surrounding community. The College believes it is vital that it captures and encourages an active learning environment through its curriculum.

“Adopting the PYP and MYP would be a significant step in moving towards an internationally recognised standard, as well as providing our students with a global perspective which will prepare them for playing their part on the world stage,” Mr Hughes said. “The IB authorisation and evaluation process, means that the College’s programmes and teaching methodologies are audited against internationally established benchmarks.”

The College believes that the PYP and MYP both provide an excellent vehicle for the delivery of the Australian curriculum and capabilities, whilst at the same time providing students with a unique global outlook, as well as ensuring subject depth and breadth.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 20 Oscar for Best Film, is a gut-wrenching reminder of the hopelessness into which students can disappear following the early curtailment of their secondary schooling. That’s not to say that students who complete their mandatory schooling years will by definition do well in life. That can’t even be said of all students who successfully complete a university degree. The twists and turns in our lives are far more complex than that.

It’s also fair to say that school for some students is an exercise in trauma and disappointment.

Nonetheless, hanging in there at school would be a better option for more rather than less students.

From this perspective, providing students with an incentive to stay at school longer is highly desirable.

One school which has boldly come out and stated its case for requiring students to ‘opt in’ if they want an ATAR, is Templestowe College in Melbourne’s north-east.

In arguing this strategy, College principal, Peter Hutton says, “If one of our aims is to encourage a love of learning, why would you make their final years of learning a hell?” He added, “We don’t want this to be a dirty little secret where kids are meant to feel ashamed. I want to bring it out into the light and present it as a really viable option.”

Templestowe College are to be commended for their transparency and frankness. Sadly, that’s not the case for all others. I can’t help but think of the eighties and the students made to sit their Year 12 exams as belonging to no school. I have no doubt that it was not an isolated case at the time, and from the stories told today, it would seem that the ‘market forces’ approach which has gained momentum in our education system has much for which to answer.

Central to the market approach to education is what is commonly termed the commodification of education. Put simply, this means that learning becomes a process where an economic value is attached to the outcomes. That is - good marks for subjects studied, with the eventual pay dirt being a quality job.

It’s important to remember that not all learning is assigned an economic value. Indeed, it is the very measurable, tangible learning that is undertaken in our schools that is assigned such value. Little wonder then that our NAPLAN tests, the international tests - Trends in International Mathematics & Science (TIMSS), Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and of course VCE with its attached ATAR scaled scores rule supreme.

No irony intended, but Einstein, himself an unremarkable school student, would make the connection between an increasingly commodified education system and the appeal to some feepaying schools private schools and sadly, some of our own government schools of pushing boundaries to outperform each other in their VCE results. This at the potential expense of their students it could be argued. There should be more to education than that and indeed there is.

One of the more frustrating features of our spiral down the path of high-stakes testing regimes in our schools is that we have no way of comparing school performance beyond the narrow confines of predominantly tests in literacy, numeracy as per NAPLAN and to that science can be thrown in for TIMSS and PISA tests. Then there’s VCE with ATAR scores, all designed primarily for entrance to university. Sadly, the language of our day speaks of high performing and underperforming schools on the basis of these narrow indicators. This, quite apart from the fact that firstly, schools don’t operate on a level playing field of resourcing and secondly, students are ‘enticed’ from government schools based simply on their academic or sporting prowess by some private schools. The free enterprise model of education explains this all very neatly. Schools with the best VCE results command the most clout for enrolments and, in the case of private schools, the highest fees. Student segregation based on social and academic advantage logically follows. Little wonder then that the gap in educational performance between the students from our more affluent and poorer families is one of the highest of all OECD countries in international tests such as PISA. Maybe, just maybe, the move toward a broader basis for student engagement and success in senior secondary schools such as Templestowe College will be the dawn of a new era in our school system. If it proves to be so, then that will be truly revolutionary and will rewrite the rules of engagement for all schools. If not, then tilting at windmills is no bad thing. If it were there would be no place for Don Quixote and the Impossible Dream.

Highvale Highvale has a focus on enabling and empowering all the students to achieve high academic success. Hoppers Crossing Secondary College HOPPERS Crossing Secondary College is a single campus, co-educational College with an enrolment of approximately 1,450 students. Our students are PERFORMERS. A strong Performing Arts Program underpins a vast extra-curricular offering. Mark comes to John Fawkner College with a wealth of experience in previous leadership roles within government schools. Most recently as Campus Principal, Sunshine College and formerly as Lead Teacher at Northland Secondary College. Prior to his work in education, Mark gained experience in project management and construction roles. Mount Alexander College “ONE size does not fit all, and neither should education. Student choice and voice is important in empowering students to learn,” says Mr Wayne Haworth, Principal of Mount Alexander College (MAC).

When Wayne commenced as a principal at MAC in 2015, he chose Peter Hutton, Templestowe College Principal, as his mentor because of his innovative approach to education. Wayne’s first step as principal was to observe and consult with the school community. Since this shift in focus, enrolments have increased across all year levels from students seeking more from the education system. When students enrol at MAC, they mention they have heard MAC delivers education in an alternative way and that the traditional school system didn’t work.

What is different at MAC? MAC students are empowered through vertical classes and subject choice. The school develops creativity, critical thinking skills, and independent work skills. All students have course counselling to create an individual learning plan from over 100 electives. As the new (and third) Principal of Rowville Secondary College, I have been spending a lot of time listening to what parents and community members want for their child’s education. Salesian College Chadstone SALESIAN College Chadstone Year 11 students Robert Lam, Anthony Zulli, Steven Lim and Marcus Facchino have created the 3D video game ‘Elementalist’ as a submission to the Australian STEM Video Game Challenge.

The STEM Video Game Challenge aims to facilitate engagement with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students, to enable them to learn vital skills for the future through designing, building and testing an original video game.

Developed using ‘Unreal Engine’, software that is commonly used in professional game production, the theme of Elementalist is ‘Reaction’, a theme set out by this year’s STEM Video Game Challenge. In ‘Elementalist’, players are able to collect elements and combine these to increase their skills in the game. Levels are randomly generated, and become more challenging as the player progresses through the game.

The process of designing and building video games is a great way to develop logic, problem solving, self-efficacy, confidence and risk management skills, writes Dr Chad Habel, a Senior Lecturer at Adelaide University.

“Building a game also requires communication and interpersonal skills… and even non-

commercial games require project management skills, and business and marketing acumen.”

When asked whether they believed developing ‘Elementalist’ negatively affected their progress in their other subjects, Robert Lam felt positive about the game.

“We learnt to manage our time much more effectively, as we had less time to work with. I think working on ‘Elementalist’ actually benefited our studies in other subjects, as we learnt better organisational skills.”

“We also developed better communication and collaboration skills, as we couldn’t all work on the same file simultaneously, so we had to communicate and plan out when each person would work on the game”, says Robert.

“We also learnt to be perseverant, as we had to work through hundreds of problems to make the game work.”

While this game was developed for the STEM competition specifically, Robert, Anthony, Steven and Marcus have taken the skills they learnt to apply to the next game they develop.

We are now in Stage 4 of our exciting capital development works of our 10 Year Master Building Plan. Stage 4 of this plan is the construction of a purpose built Senior Years Centre assisting with the transition from senior secondary schooling to tertiary education.

The recently completed Stage 3, saw to the doubling in size of the Fr Tobin Gymnasium to include two full sized basketball courts with retractable tier seating to provide for a show court, refurbished change rooms and a new dedicated weights room, along with the refurbishment of the Fr Ray Administration Centre.

A state-of-the-art Performing Arts Centre has recently been completed. The Fr Moran Performing Arts Centre features a 500-seat auditorium together with the latest technical production equipment, lighting and sound dedicated drama and music rooms and a recording studio.

The Australian Guild of Music Education THE Australian Guild of Music is a nonprofit organisation providing Distance Education solely in the field of Music Education.

A Career in Travel What technical & professional skills do I need to become a Travel Agent?

As a Travel Agent, it’s important that you are a strong multitasker who can listen to client requests, manage their travel plans and suggest travel options that will best suit their needs. You’ll also need to have strong sales skills, as much of your success will be determined by the sales you secure.

While you don’t need a licence to work as a Travel Agent, formal training will put you in a strong position to stand out from the crowd when it comes to applying for jobs.

As most employers prefer their staff to have previous experience in the travel industry, a qualification such as a Certificate III in Travel or a Diploma of Travel and Tourism (SIT50112) is an ideal way to gain experience if you haven’t worked in the industry before.

As SEEK Learning Consultant Rachel Armstrong explains, “A travel or tourism qualification will teach you valuable skills using the computer reservations system used for making travel bookings, preparing quotes and destination knowledge.”

While a Certificate provides you with an entry point and the practical skills you’ll need to get your foot in the door, a Diploma will prepare you for managerial roles in the travel industry and teach you skills relevant to related fields such as hospitality and events.

Your own travel experience will also be used to your advantage. Travelling as much as possible (or a long history in travel) can strengthen your geographical knowledge and provide you with valuable first-hand insights.

Should I become a Travel Agent?

Travel Agents provide an intermediary service between clients and suppliers to plan leisure and business travel arrangements.

As a Travel Agent, your key responsibility will be to simplify the process of arranging travel for your clients using your knowledge of the industry.

Travel Agents provide expert advice, secure the best value options for their clients, and ensure they have a positive travel experience.

Travel Agents may specialise in a particular field such as domestic travel, international travel, corporate travel, or tours. Specialities can also be destination-specific, usually based on a Travel Agent’s familiarity with a particular region.

A Career in Aviation Bacchus Marsh School Of Aviation HOW many people can say that? How many times have you heard your family and friends complain that they have to go to work on Monday, that they wish they could do something that they enjoy instead of the same repetitive, mundane activity that they engage in now.

I work for Tigerair as a First Officer on the A320. I fly to a different destination every work day with a great crew in a high tech office. I have to apply my knowledge and experience in a myriad of situations which is both challenging and rewarding.

I remember sitting in the careers office at school being told that I had to do a degree. I just wanted to fly – I didn’t care how, but I was going to be a pilot. I was gently reminded that pilots had to do well at high level maths and sciences – I’m here to tell you that it’s not true. I selected the subjects that interested me – Physical Education, Legal Studies, Physics, Japanese, Math Methods (I admit I did this because I thought that I had to), English and Dance – yes, Dance.

The road towards becoming an airline pilot was by no means an easy one.

There was a lot of study and various jobs along the way. I worked in a chemist and at a flying school whilst completing year 11 and 12 to pay for my flying lessons. I flew my first solo on my 16th

I Love My Job. birthday and obtained my Private Pilots licence on my 17th birthday.

I saved enough money to fly a small twin engined plane across to Perth at the end of year 12. I was successful in receiving a Defence Force scholarship to attend the Academy to become a military pilot.

I decided that this wasn’t for me and I began pursuing a civilian career which consisted of instructing, testing officer, freight carrying and finally flying for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

My father said something to me when I left home at 17 to attend the Academy: “The only people who don’t make it are the ones who give up.”

I am where I want to be – in one of the best jobs in the world. Not because I did a degree, not because I did subjects I was expected to do and most certainly not because it was handed to me on a silver platter.

I’m here because I worked and studied hard, had supportive friends and family who believed that I could do it and I never, EVER gave up.

A Career in Massage Therapy What is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy has been around for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks, Chinese and Egyptians all made reference to this unique form of medicine. However, an old, stale industry it certainly is not. Massage therapy has been growing in recent years as people look to alternative methods to de-stress and cure their ailments.

Massage therapy is a term that encompasses many different types of massage. In general, these can be broken down into two categories; relaxation and clinical. Relaxation style massage is what many of you may think of when you think of massage. Types of relaxation massage include:: Swedish massage; Esalen massage; Geriatric massage; and Lomi Lomi.

These types of massage are generally performed with the goal of relaxing the patient and reducing stress. The other type of massage is clinical massage. These types of massage aim to address a specific therapeutic goal and can include: Sports massage; Rehabilitative massage; Post-surgical massage; and Myotherapy.

As I’m sure you can imagine, the varying styles of massage mean that there are an equally varied number of career options. This can include everything from working with professional athletes, working with a physiotherapist, or working on a cruise ship or at a resort.

Massage therapists also have the benefit of being able to work freelance. This can be good for people who need to fit their work around other commitments or people who have always wanted to work for themselves. Of course, as a massage therapist, as well as your qualification it will help if you have certain other skills or personality traits.

This can include social skills such as empathy and the ability to communicate well, as well as physical skills such as strength and stamina.

As well as this, those who are looking to work freelance should have good organisational and time-management skills.

What Qualifications do I Need?

As well as the aforementioned skills, it is imperative to get the correct qualification to become a massage therapist.

There are a couple of TAFE qualifications you can take to get certified. These courses cover all the important things you need to know to become a great massage therapist and will set you up with an excellent general knowledge of massage. The most general course you can take is the Certificate IV in Massage Therapies.

This certificate is perfect for those who are wanting to enter the massage industry or even for qualified massage therapists who want to ensure their qualifications are valid in Australia. For those people who want to pick up some specialist skills and don’t mind taking a little longer over their course, there are other options. Some of these include: ■ Diploma of Remedial Massage ■ Diploma of Traditional Chinese Medicine Remedial Massage ■ Diploma in Shiatsu and Oriental Therapy These qualifications are a little more in-depth than the Certificate IV and as such, they take a little longer to complete. However, they give you the opportunity to specialise in a particular skill which can be a great career boost. You are also able to study online when taking these courses, which can be great if you need to fit your learning around other commitments.

They are also completely VET FEE-HELP approved, which means the cost of the course is initially government funded. You don’t need to pay for your course until you are working and earning at least $54,869. Before choosing a course, make sure you have thought about the type of massage you want to do, and where you want to do it. The outlook for massage therapist jobs in Australia is strong over the next few years. Specifically, employment for Massage Therapists is expected to grow strongly till 2020.

Depending on the course you take people who gain their qualifications in Massage Therapy can apply to jobs as general Massage Therapists, Massage Practitioners or a type of massage therapy more specific to their qualification. These jobs can be either in a spa/leisure location, in a medical location or freelance jobs in a variety of places.

Many massage therapists work part time, especially when first starting out and gaining experience or a good client base.

A career in massage therapy can be a very rewarding experience. You can help people reduce stress or recover from injuries. It is a growing industry and with lots of new opportunities in a variety of different places. As the industry is expected to keep growing in the future, who knows what kind of jobs will soon open up.
