But Crs Matthew Kirwan and Angela Long did just that. Cr Kirwan said the council should have consulted the community before making a stand, which includes a 500-strong Indigenous community. He said 26 January was not a date that unified. Cr Kirwan said Australia Day was first celebrated nationally in 1935 and only became an official national holiday in 1994. He said that for Indigenous Australians, 26 January 1788 was “the day that their land started to be taken. It was the day that they started dying.” Their population dropped from 1.25 million at white settlement to about 50,000 in 1930. “There were many massacres. There were many deaths from western diseases,” he said. “All of that started on the unhappy date of 26 January. “We need to change the date so the celebration is inclusive of all our residents.”

Indigenous Australians need to “move on” and Australia Day should stay put, says Greater Dandenong Councillor Maria Sampey. The council will officially express its support for Australia Day celebrations remaining on 26 January after Cr Sampey joined Crs Tim Dark, Youhorn Chea, Loi Truong, Sean O’Reilly, Jim Memeti and Heang Tak in voting to do so at the Monday 23 October council meeting. Cr Dark moved the motion, telling the meeting he’d been “personally inundated” with requests to take a stand. “We have one of the best Australia Days I’ve ever been to,” he said. “The role of Australia Day is not to divide people, it’s to unite people.” Cr Sampey said it was “sad in a way that people dwell on the invasion”. “There’s stacks of countries around the world that have been invaded at some time or other,” she said. “It happened years ago and we just need to move on.“ She said that moving the date really had nothing to do with the council. “It needs to come from the Federal Government rather than the council getting involved in something like this,” Cr Sampey said. “We should worry about our residents and what’s going on in our city.” Cr O’Reilly said he thought the motion was unnecessary as the status quo should stand unless the Federal Government moved the public holiday. “By resolving on this matter either way we are also implicitly agreeing that other councils can have their own view on this matter, rather then being a universal view that should come from the Federal Government,” he said. “Now that the motion’s on the table we should support it and most definitely move on. “I think it would be a bad look for council to vote against this motion.”

Don't clobber our day, cobber ... Good on you, Greater Dandenong Council mates - you’re a fair dinkum beauty. It’s become the fashion of late to have a crack at Australia Day - just witness some of the trendy inner-city latte-sipping municipalities that seek to use our national day to divide us, not unite us. They’re supposedly dinky-di Australians - but they’re consumed by the errors of the past, rather than the potential greatness of our collective future. But not in Greater Dandenong. In our town - surely the home of multi-culturalism in Victoria, if not the nation - the council is standing rocksolid behind the day to celebrate what’s great. At first glance, it seems odd that Greater Dandenong’s council should be such a firm supporter of Australia Day. But who would know better what a great country this is, than the poor, huddled masses who have fled tyranny and oppression overseas for our wide brown land of freedom and barbecues? It's sad but true that perhaps those who have come across the seas - recognising what they've left behind and what they've found - value it a little more than the locally born product does. To see an Afghan immigrant proudly waving a flag at Dandenong’s brilliant Australia Day ceremony is to truly understand what it can mean to be an Australian in the 21st century. Good on them for fully embracing their new land. Good on their council for backing them. And shame on the trendies who question celebrating the best little bottler of a country going around. Flag debate fight Debate over flying the Torres Strait Islander flag produced a “bloody disgusting” personal attack in the Greater Dandenong Council chambers. At the Monday 23 October meeting, Councillor Angela Long moved that the council permanently fly it on the third flag pole at the civic centre, which is currently used for a council logo flag. But Cr Tim Dark opposed the motion, and with help from Cr Sampey successfully achieved its deferral. “Cr Long can pot shot me all she likes and she can run around like the socialist left war-
rior she sets out to be ... ” he said. Cr Sean O’Reilly immediately interjected, calling Cr Dark’s language “extremely personal and unnecessary”. Cr Long also responded: “That’s an insult to me and I think that’s bloody disgusting." Mayor Jim Memeti told Cr Dark to “please refrain from any personal attacks”. Cr Dark continued to voice his opposition, reading from the Reconciliation Australia website that it was important to consult with the Torres Strait Islander community before flying the flag. “Instead, we’re going to leap to conclusions and potentially insult the Torres Strait Islander
people,” he said. Cr Sampey said: “Should we defer until confirmation from the Torres Strait Islanders whether they wish to have their flag flown at all? “I think it might be more appropriate.” Crs Dark, Memeti Heang Tak, and Youhorn Chea supported her motion. In opposition were Crs O’Reilly, Long, Matthew Kirwan and Loi Truong. Cr Long said she “just can’t get over the fact that someone’s actually opposed it”. “These are our first people,” she said. “They should have their flag flown. “They’re not under the Aboriginal flag.”

Show spreads to applause in art world By Casey Neill The Noble Park Community Art Show received 100 extra entries this year. More than 500 people viewed the 330-plus art works on display on Friday 20, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 October. “I think we had probably about 60 people here on the Friday morning for the schools and all abilities display presentation,” the centre’s administration manager Danielle O’Neill said. “Opening night we had about 230 people attend then across the weekend there would have been between 320 and 350 people.” Ms O’Neill said the show attracted 263 entries in the open section and 70 in the juniors. “That’s almost 100 more entries this year than last year,” she said. “A lot of the new entries came from artists societies outside the municipality as well, so

Last chance By Casey Neill A Noble Park father facing deportation has made his last roll of the dice following a failed appeal to the Immigration and Border Protection Minister. Eranda Ranasinghe, 39, has lodged a complaint with the Office of the Commonwealth Ombudsman claiming Minister Peter Dutton’s decision to send him back to Sri Lanka following 11 years in Australia was unfair. He arrived in Australia as a student on 1 January 2007, completed a hospitality course and worked as a manager at Braeside McDonald’s for three years. But Eranda has failed the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test 22 times. He needs to score six in each component of the test but has fallen 0.5 points short in the reading section. “I attended the classes to improve my knowledge,” he said. Eranda said a teacher picked up something wasn’t right and neuropsychologist Doctor Georgia Lowndes “issued a report explaining that I am having a disorder for reading in IELTS test”. But his attempts to obtain an exemption have failed, including a direct appeal to Mr Dutton in person. In September, he learnt that his latest application had been rejected. Eranda said the Springvale, Noble Park and Keysborough communities had shown support following coverage of his plight in the Star Journal last month. He said people had offered to write to Mr Dutton and suggested a petition or protest. He’s still hopeful he’ll be allowed to stay in Australia. “I don’t think we would be able to start a life back there (in Sri Lanka),” he said. Eranda’s wife is receiving treatment for mental illness. She was recently admitted to hospital for the third time in 18 months. They have a 15-month-old son, Makeyl. He’s struggling to pay rent, unable to work since March last year because his wife and son both need full-time care. A spokesperson for the Department of Immigration and Border Protection said the department and assistant minister had comprehensively assessed Eranda’s case. The spokesperson said the Assistant Minister only intervened in a relatively small number of cases which presented unique and exceptional circumstances.

Woodman was an art show founding member and died last year. “That was actually quite touching,” Ms O’Neill said. “He was a watercolour artist.” A couple of entrants in the junior section took home more than one prize. “Partly that is because we’ve got less junior entries to decide between, but these girls were just standouts,” she said. 100 years ago 1 November 1917 Honour avenue of trees At a meeting of the Dandenong shire council on Thursday, the appended letter was received from Mr R A Pedler hon secretary Ratepayers’ Association, forwarding resolution passed at the recent meeting, asking the shire president to open a fund for the planting of an honour avenue in Dandenong. The association promised to support the proposal. Mr C W Russell, hon secretary of the patriotic league, also wrote in regard to the proposed honour avenue of trees and promised to support the proposal. Cr Abbott said the proposal was a good one and that, in each riding, tree planting should be done to the extent of the number of volunteers who had enlisted, and that brass
plates be attached to each tree, and afterwards to the tree guards. He thought the general public would support the scheme. He moved that the secretary reply, intimating that the proposal would be taken up by council.
50 years ago 31 October 1967 A fire which won’t be lit Preparations by Dandenong West children for their annual bonfire night on 5 November ended abruptly when council men arrived and carted away the material. Council action followed a complaint for fire danger. “We had no alternative but to remove the material,” an officer of the engineering de-
partment explained. The bonfire site, which is about half an acre of vacant land on the corner of Marion Street and Wilma Avenue, was said to be in a built-up area.
20 years ago 27 October 1997 Help with revitalisation Dandenong traders will be offered incentives to dress up their shops in a bid to revitalise the City. A proposal to make the shopping strips look something like Brunswick Street was approved by the council. The Dandenong facade improvement plan will offer incentives to traders who participate in the revamp. However the council will provide just $10,000 for the scheme.
Councillor John Kelly rejected a recommendation to provide $25,000, saying it would blow the budget.

After 17 months in the Christmas Island and Weipa detention centres, Kumar lives on a government benefit of $1000 a month. More than half of that is paid in rent, leaving him a bit over $100 per week for other expenses. On a 12-month bridging visa, he has full work rights to “support himself”. But getting a job is hard.

Journal editor Greg Dickson was a freshfaced “boy from the Mallee” in 1939 when he bought the newspaper that would become his passion and his legacy. At his funeral 54 years later, former Dandenong mayor Maurie Jarvis described Greg as “one of Dandenong’s best-loved citizens ever”. “He earned the respect of the community because he was always so unassuming, so quietly efficient and he was always ready to give freely of himself in the service to our community,” he said at the time. He then joked that he would rush to grab the first Journal each Wednesday morning “so I
NAME could read exactly what I had said in the council chamber at the previous meeting”. Greg was an old-style editor/proprietor: he wrote stories, subbed copy, laid out the newspaper, got ink under his nails manning the printing presses and helped distribute the finished product. He inherited his love of newspapers from his mother, Flora. Flora and Alfred Dickson bought the Ouyen and North West Express, a small paper in the heart of the Mallee, in 1918. When Alfred fell

At age 13, Greg was already honing his craft writing all the sports reports for the Express and by 14 he was Ouyen Racing Club’s acting assistant secretary. Greg eventually left school to help his
mother full-time at the Express. When Flora sold the paper in late 1938, Greg decided to buy his own. William Bennett was ready to sell the Journal. “Every reporter hopes for the day when he might have his own paper and run it the way he thinks it should be run,” Greg wrote when he retired as editor in 1964. “I was lucky - I set out to buy a paper in Yarrawonga and wound up buying one in Dandenong!” The Journal’s circulation was 950 when Greg bought it. By 1961 paid circulation had grown to 6500, making it one of the largest circulating provincial newspapers in Victoria. Greg sold the Journal to Rupert Murdoch’s Cumberland Newspaper Group in 1961, staying on as editor. He ‘retired’ in 1964 but continued contributing news, sporting and social items to the paper until his death in 1993.

Syndicate steps in A private syndicate has bought Nissan’s headquarters in Dandenong South. David Aiello and Stephen Adgemis from commercial real estate agency CBRE negotiated the sale following an expressions of interest campaign that attracted more than 80 inquiries. The site at 260-270 Frankston-Dandenong Road is 11.42 hectares and currently houses Nissan’s corporate office and parts warehousing operations. Mr Adgemis said industrial land prices in the area had spiked to record levels during the past six months. “Development and value-add opportunities are becoming increasingly scarce in the South-East, with most of the major sites owned

Changken Chan is a mathematical marvel. The Dandenong 12-year-old was in the top 0.3 per cent of Grade 6 students who completed the 40th annual Australian Mathematics Competition on 27 July, an activity of the Australian Mathematics Trust. The Dandenong West Primary student has been invited to attend the Australian Maths Trust Awards presentation evening on Monday 30 October for the outstanding result. The competition lasts one hour and tests from basic numeracy skills through to advanced problem solving. “I wasn’t really surprised,” Changken said. “I kind of half expected it because I knew I got most of the questions right and only a few wrong.” He found his talent for maths “a long time ago, in Prep”. “I was good at logical reasoning and finding
out ways to do things in a methodical way,” he said. “I started learning some things about maths and I practised some. “I told my mum to buy some books about maths. “I practised and I got faster at it.” Changken said he “accelerated very quickly” in Years 3 and 4. He puts his success down to “just hard work” and a bit of natural talent. “I have fun doing it, but I don’t get that excited when I do maths,” he said. “I just enjoy it. “I like practising and I enjoy trying to solve problems.” Last year he placed in the top 7 per cent in his year level. “I looked at last year’s one, saw what I got wrong ... ” he said. “To be more careful, that was the basic thing.
Two teenage boys ripped a phone from their victim’s hands at a Dandenong bus stop, police allege. Transit CIU detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the Sunday 1 October incident on Langhorne Street. On Wednesday 25 October they released images of two teens they believe could assist with their investigation. They said the victim was waiting for a bus in a shelter about 4pm when two teens got off a bus and approached him. One allegedly tried to grab his phone from his hands, but he held onto it. A short struggle took place and the teen ripped the phone from the victim’s hands. The boys fled on foot, running towards the Dandenong Market area. No one was injured during the incident. Police arrested a Dandenong man over 20 alleged burglaries across the South-East and beyond. Greater Dandenong CIU Senior Constable Heather Whitehead said they took the 26-yearold into custody at his home on Wednesday 18 October. She said the alleged burglaries occurred over the past few months and stretched from Dandenong to the South-East and into the Melbourne CBD. Police did not recover any stolen property at the address. He was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 2 November.

Speaking to a Tatts official to claim her prize, she said she was looking forward to decorating her new house and spoiling her kids. “I was at home in the backyard relaxing, and I actually thought I had won $20,000 and was over the moon with that amount,” she said. “I took a photo and sent it to my son and he told me ‘Mum, that’s $200,000!’ “I ran and got my glasses from upstairs and looked at it again and saw that it was true! I’m really grateful for the win.” The winner said she’d save some cash for a nice holiday next year, too. She said she regularly bought Instant Scratch-Its and had a “feeling” about this particular ticket, and hasn’t let it out of her sight. “It was next to us in bed with us. We were quite happy to share our bed with the winning ticket,” she said. Million Dollar Lotto at Parkmore Shopping Centre in Keysborough sold the ticket. Owner Simon Boctor said he was pleased to hear that a regular customer had scratched a top prize. “We will be telling all of our customers that our store has sold a winner,” he said.
By Casey Neill Allan and Gloria Coggins have shared their lives for more than 60 years, but share different views on what has kept them together. Gloria said patience, working with your family and taking things as they come had helped to keep their six-decade union in good shape. Allan had another take on the key to staying together. “Least said, soonest mended,” he laughed. The Keysborough couple celebrated their diamond anniversary on Thursday 26 October with a dinner at Dandenong Pavilion with their family. They tied the knot at St George’s Presbyterian Church in Chapel Street, East St Kilda, in 1957. “Everything went off perfectly. The weather was fine and we had a great time,” Gloria said. The reception was at The New Alexandra. “It was quite pricey and my father even offered Allan to elope,” Gloria laughed. “I think he was joking. I had two brothers and I was the only girl, you see. I don’t think he would have missed out on that.” Allan still remembers the first time he laid eyes on Gloria, at a Saturday night dance at St Kilda Town Hall in 1955. “Allan asked me for a dance, didn’t he,” Gloria said. “Then he asked me for more dances and then he asked if he could take me home!” He drove an F100 truck at the time. “And it just carried on from there,” Gloria said. They got engaged in 1956 and in 1960 bought their first home, in Noble Park. They moved to Keysborough in 1979. “It was all market gardens,” Allan said. Their first son was born in1960, and two

more soon followed. They both agreed that their children were the highlight of their relationship. “We’re proud of them because they’ve all done well with their jobs and things,” Allan said. “I don’t think any of them has ever been on the dole, have they? “They’ve all kept themselves with work.” Allan worked in the automotive industry, spending 30 years at General Motors after taking a job there “temporarily”. Gloria worked as a secretary, including a stint at the Journal. Allan is a life member at Noble Park Little Athletics and the family was also involved in local football and swimming.

Stalker's slit throat threat

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Dandenong man has been refused bail while accused of stalking and telling his Mernda expartner to “sleep with one eye open” because he would slit her throat. The man had recently escalated his unpredictability and aggression, police informant First Constable Courtney Milner told a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court bail hearing on 23 October. On 20 October, the man allegedly messaged the victim that “I’m coming over ... I don’t give a f*** about the coppers. You’ve created all this.” He followed that with other messages threatening to kill her and three friends, and to report her to authorities as an unfit mother, First Const Milner said. “I’m not going to stop until I crush you.” Two days later he allegedly warned her to “sleep with one open, c***, because I’ll slit your throat open”. When arrested and interviewed by police, the man denied the latter threat. He threatened to “smash” the victim, not kill her, he told police. Police opposed bail due to the risk of the man re-offending and his threats alarming the “extremely fearful” victim, First Const Milner said. He had inflicted family violence at least five times to two different victims, the informant said. In December, the man had been jailed for 70 days and placed on an 18-month corrections order for a string of violent offences against the same victim last year. The offences included: Slapping the victim’s face in front of her children in her garage; Opening her car door, holding a lighter up to the roof and threatening to destroy her car; Parking outside her home and threatening to kill himself; Driving a car through her fence; Trying to run her over as she walked home, and then crashing into a pole as he sped away from police; Forcibly shaking the victim’s father; Forcibly shaking the victim until she passed out in front of her children; Banging her head against the car window while she was driving. The man told the court he’d gone off his mental-health medication recently so he could go back to work. “No one will employ me with all these drugs in my system.” The man said he stayed in the house most of the time, and it was the victim who “stalks and harasses me” with frequent phone calls. He said that his phone had been seized by police and he couldn’t remember the victim’s numbers. The man was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 15 November.

Out of the gutter Greater Dandenong Council has refuted claims that elderly residents are waiting 18 months for gutter cleaning. Councillor Maria Sampey told the Monday 9 October council meeting that “probably at the end of the 18 months they’re in nursing home”. But community services director Martin Fidler said the current wait time was actually about six weeks.

What is something people don’t know about you? I have a heavy rigid truck licence. I was actually a truck driver before I started working for Gabrielle. Quite the change!
How did you wind up working with Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams? I met Gabrielle at the local shops in Doveton when she had a community street stall. I then volunteered on Gabrielle’s 2014 election campaign and after being elected she offered me a job working in the office.

Syringe taxi stab attack
Graeme Kershaw’s employer roped him in to helping out at the Dandenong Show. That was back in 1966. The 82-year-old has been to every show since and has no plans to stop. “I’ll always attend,” he said. He and wife Joy moved to Dandenong for his job with Alex Scott and Co as a stock and station agent. “Of course, Mr Scott and other staff members were members of the show committee,” Mr Kershaw said. “Therefore I was roped in. “I’d been involved with other shows, so I knew what was going on. “But the Dandenong Show, of course, was much larger, than what I had experienced before. “I was put onto the cattle committee. That’s where I stayed, actually.” Greaves Reserve will host this year’s show on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 November. The dairy and beef cattle are shown on the Saturday. “They’re judged on their breed, the quality of the cattle,” Mr Kershaw said. “Each breed has different aspects to how they’re formed, and that’s about it.” “They come from the Mornington Peninsula, the Yarra Valley and Gippsland - Warragul, Pakenham, Wonthaggi. “You see the very best of each breed of cattle.” Mr Kershaw was cattle committee chairman for several years and did announcing in the cattle section, too. Last year he was recognised for serving the show for 50 years and received an engraved clock for his commitment and support. “I was honoured as a life member some
A woman allegedly stabbed a taxi driver with a syringe in Dandenong after refusing to pay her fare, say police. Transit CIU detectives said the driver collected a woman from outside a home in Laurel Avenue, Doveton, about 8.20pm on Sunday 22 October. She asked to be driven to Dandenong Railway Station and once there, refused to pay the fare. A verbal altercation ensued and, police said, the woman stabbed the 48-year-old in the hand with a syringe. The Dandenong North driver followed the woman to the railway station lift where she again produced the syringe. She then boarded a city-bound train at 9.09pm. Detectives released images and CCTV of a woman who might be able to assist with their inquiries. She’s described as 20 to 30 years old and Caucasian with a thin build and bright orange hair. She was wearing a green jacket, white top and purple and pink three-quarter length leggings. The woman had a tattoo on her right upper arm. Police urged anyone who witnessed the incident or who knows the woman’s identity to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

It is never too early to book a work Christmas party. Christmas is a busy time with a lot of commitments, the last minute rush at work, finishing up school and other events for the year, planning holiday breaks or for those in retail - dealing with the Christmas rush. First things first. It’s important to establish the type of Christmas party wanted - relaxed, formal, small, large or something out of the ordinary - and look for options. Budget and timing are also key factors in deciding which venue will be perfect. Doing a bit of research is essential. Check out the advertisements in newspapers for any good deals that might be around for favourite venues. This is the time of year when venues will be looking for bookings, too, and will have announced any special packages that they have.

Leaping at the chance Clark was hampered early in the season by a niggling injury, but bounced back to end the TAC Cup season as one of its most dominant midfielders, while also earning the prestigious honour of playing for Team Enright in the Under 18’s All Stars match on AFL Grand Final day on 30 September. “In the first part of the year I was just trying to get my body right, I missed the most of pre-season with a groin injury and that hung around for most of the year, and in the first half I wasn’t playing full game time,” he said. “In the last couple of months, I’ve played my best footy, but that’s when my body had overcome that, and was able to play full games. “It was just awesome (playing on the ‘G) I’m a Richmond man also, so to play on that day was special - running on the ‘G was surreal, and when I was running out there I was just imagining running out there for an AFL Grand Final, and you just take in the little things.” He also believes the club out of Shepley Oval could be in for a decent draft haul, with up to half a dozen names likely to be taken. “I think we have a pretty strong chance of quite a few drafted - potentially there could be five or six, and maybe a couple of 19-year-olds, we’ve got quite a bit of talent,” he said.

Dandenong Stingray midfielder Hunter Clark is as tough as nails, wins the football relentlessly and leaps for the ball like a key position player. That’s why the Peninsula product is one of the most enticing prospects in this year’s draft pool. After a stunning purple patch in the second half of the year, Clark was the runaway winner in the Stingrays’ Best and Fairest award, averaging almost 27 disposals, half a dozen tackles and almost a goal a game. Life is hectic at the moment for the Stingray who will be juggling his VCE exams over the next month while awaiting draft day on 24 November where he will learn which of the 18 AFL clubs he will begin his journey with in 2018. “Yeah, it’s all pretty busy at the moment but there is still a little while to go (before the draft), so I’m just trying to keep it simple and pretty normal. “Not much has changed with what I’m doing and how I’m acting, but it’s definitely a different feeling getting close to the draft,” he said. “I’ve been fine now that the season is done, it’s definitely become more of a focus (the draft) - whatever happens, happens, and if I’m lucky enough to be picked up, it’s what I’ve wanted to do forever so I’d be stoked. “There’s still a long way to go, I’ve put in a lot of hard work to get here.” After the initial nervousness that accompanies being interviewed by a range of different clubs from all parts of the country, Clark said he now enjoys the process, despite a few differences between Victorian and interstate clubs. “Speaking to the clubs the first few times

Zippy performance upset By Mick Floyd Zipping Hawk caused a major upset at Sandown Park last Thursday night by taking out a TAB Melbourne Cup Prelude at $17. In his first start at Sandown Park since reaching the group two McKenna Memorial final in July, Zipping Hawk began cleanly from box six before carving down to the rail through the first turn. From there he railed under Mepunga Tycoon and powered away from the field off the back straight to score by five lengths in 29.54. It was the 10th win of his career and guaranteed him a place in the heats of the world’s richest greyhound race, the TAB Melbourne Cup. “It’s very exciting,” said Tammy Collins who handled the greyhound on behalf of her father, Steve. “He’s matured a lot. When he first started racing he wanted the rail pretty badly. “Tonight he jumped a lot better and cleared a lot of the dogs underneath him before he got to the rail, which is a lot better to see, but I think he’s just starting to put it all together. “He’s always had the ability but his bad box manners have been his downfall.” Pleasingly for connections, Collins believes Zipping Hawk will improve further off that run. “That was his first 500m since coming back from a spell so, hopefully, he’s going to improve with fitness and can keep pressing on to Melbourne Cup heats.” In the night’s second TAB Melbourne Cup Prelude, Zara’s Entity showed why she is widely regarded as one of the favourites for the series with a stunning victory in 29.26. Springvale South quick Nathan King took 2/50 in North Dandenong’s second innings. 78th over and with three wickets remaining. Kaushyla Weeraratne (2/48) and Lee Brown (2/28) were steady with the ball all day. BUCKLEY RIDGES and BERWICK played out a thrilling final day, with the Bucks managing to steal a magnificent victory by 27 runs. The Bears looked in control at 1/68 as play resumed on day two, still 121 runs shy of the Bucks’ total but totally in command on their
home deck. Quick wickets stunted the Bears’ progress in the early stages with star all-rounder Daniel Watson (4/27) bowling brilliantly, and despite resistance in the latter part of the innings, the home side were bowled out for 161. Ryan Williamson (29) was the top scorer for the Bears, with seven batsmen scoring between 10 and 30.
Donnell shows his class VIC PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUND 4 Dandenong champion Tom Donnell has feasted on CaseySouth Melbourne for the last decade, so it was only fitting he did it once again in a milestone match. Playing his 200th Victorian Premier Cricket match after starting his career with the Swans, Donnell thrilled his beloved Shepley Oval with a wonderful half century to guide his side to a 4-0 record and on top of the ladder. Two iffy calls gave the Panthers the opening scalps of Casey pair Kasun Suriaratchie (0) and Lachlan Sperling (5), and before drinks, the Swans were hanging on by a thread

Veteran quick Darren Pattinson (4/19) was simply phenomenal in this period, winding back the clock in a stellar spell that saw him bowl his 10 overs straight and worry the Swans with his pace and bounce. As they did last week, Chris Benedek (23) steadied the ship while Dylan Hadfield (43) played the aggressor, and it worked a treat, helping lift the score to 9/155 off their 50 overs - a competitive, yet underpar score. It didn’t take long for legendary openers Donnell and Brett Forsyth to take the fizz out of the contest, with Donnell cracking an early lofted drive straight to the boundary in the second over.
Forsyth was eventually run out 15 runs short of a half century with the score at 93, but it didn’t stop Donnell from aggressively sending the ball to every corner of the ground. The skipper eventually fell for 56, but it simply didn’t matter, with Ed Newman (40) once again showing his abundance of class by playing a crafty knock. A dominant Dandy got the runs in the 32nd over, with LJ Edwards (12 not out) and James Nanopoulos (8 not out) there at the end. The win leaves the Panthers undefeated and atop the Premier ladder, ahead of a Round 5 clash with Melbourne Uni away.

DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 2 (DAY 2) Saturday may have saw NORTH DANDENONG narrowly avoid outright after bravely digging in with the bat, but it also saw SPRINGVALE SOUTH showcase its pure power and get its season off to a perfect 2-0 start. After claiming the points on the opening day, the Bloods re-entered Alex Nelson Reserve hell bent on earning itself some valuable outright points. Resuming at 1/18, the Maroons hung tough after a couple of early wickets, with Syed Mehmood (64) and Sanjeewa De Silva (57) doing an excellent job of putting the pressure back on the Bloods with some counterattacking batting. After sitting comfortable at 3/151, spinner Jarryd Straker (5/36) tore the middleto-late order apart and Nathan King (2/50) bowled some important overs, as the Maroons scratched their way to 202 - 154 runs clear of avoiding outright. The equation was fairly simple, 17 overs and 155 runs to win and earn the extra points. And the Bloods gave it an almighty crack, with Nathan King (25), Michael Vandort (30) and Steven Spoljaric (58 off 28 balls) combining for seven sixes to almost clinch an incredible outright victory, falling just 14 runs short. But the Bloods proved they are a force, and one that has the capability to produce some extraordinary results. Down at Reedy Reserve, DINGLEY clinched a crucial victory over last year’s runners up, HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS, with the Dingoes winning by three wickets.
