■ Star footballer’s shock fall from grace into crime and bikie gang

Drugs shame

12369275-CG43-17

A former AFL footballer accused of being a member of an outlaw motorbike gang has been bailed on drug trafficking and weapons charges. Justin Lee Berry, 36, of Dandenong North, was described by police as being addicted to meth and supporting the Hells Angels motorcycle gang during a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court bail hearing on 23 October. The former St Kilda and Carlton footballer has been known as a footballing superstar in Melbourne’s South-East - with stints at Cranbourne, Devon Meadows, and Garfield as well as Frankston’s VFL side. Berry had spent the previous 23 days in custody. He was represented by Victoria Legal Aid after being dumped by his barrister earlier that day. Berry’s home, secured with high-definition CCTV, was raided by Armed Crime Squad police on 29 September as part of Operation Gloom, the court heard. The operation is a police crackdown on firearms in South-East Melbourne. Police allegedly seized 30 exhibits including a 3D-printed handgun in a garage safe and a rifle wrapped in a blanket in the master bedroom, along with a variety of ammunition. The printed gun’s firing capability was still to be tested, police informant First Constable Jason Budge told the court. Inside Berry’s car police allegedly found 14 grams of methamphetamine, several ec-

stasy tablets, 1,4 butanediol, drug transaction notes, digital scales and knuckledusters. Police also seized a stolen motorbike, several Tasers, several knuckledusters, a laser pointer, and a sheathed sword inside the home and garage. A wooden pole with a grip and exposed nails found in the garage was described by magistrate Jack Vandersteen as a “viciously manufactured weapon” that could blind or kill a person. Const Budge said the unemployed Berry was now dealing in drugs as his main income for supporting himself, his partner and children. “He has told investigators that he is a supporter of the Hells Angels motorcycle group.” In a police interview, Berry made “full admissions” to trafficking drugs for three years as well as possessing the prohibited weapons, firearms and proceeds of crime, First Const Budge said. Police were unable at the time to state a frequency, quantity or commercial value of Berry’s admitted trafficking. Defence lawyer Adrian Dessi questioned if Berry had admitted to simply selling meth “intermittently” to a group of friends over a course of time rather than running a business. Berry’s links to the Hells Angels were untested, Mr Dessi said. Mr Dessi described Berry as being born and raised in Lyndhurst and Cranbourne, who had been in “significantly good physical health”. THE LOWDOWN Q&A

with Cranbourne Turf Club sales and sponsorship manager Luke King

Tell us something most people would not know about you… I can’t play the piano. What was your most memorable moment? To date, meeting Sir Paul McCartney at Lords after mistakenly thinking I knew him from a sports store in country Victoria. If you could attend a sporting event anywhere in the world, what would it be? The Melbourne Cup. Australia is the best place on earth.

THREE … Local links to Australia’s most famous race

1

Current Cranbourne trainer and former champion jockey Pat Hyland won the 1985 Melbourne Cup on What A Nuisance for Lloyd Williams, the second of the leviathan owner’s five cup winners. What A Nuisance was retired to Hyland’s Clyde property and died in April 2005 at the age of 26. Hyland rode 2382 career winners.

2

The local connection to the Melbourne Cup goes back to the first race meeting held in Cranbourne over two days in April 1867, when an aged gelding named Toryboy won the feature Cranbourne Handicap over 3218 metres. Toryboy had won the Melbourne Cup in 1865, netting a fortune for his owner, Prahran draper B.C. Marshall.

3

Jack Holt was Australia’s most successful trainer in the early part of the last century - considered the Bart Cummings of his era and won the 1933 Melbourne Cup with Hall Mark. Holt, known as the “Wizard of Mordialloc” grew up in Berwick and actually started his training career on the old Beaconsfield racecourse.

What is your favorite television show? Ray Donovan. What has been your most embarrassing moment to date? On stage crouching down delivering a line when my pants ripped at the seam in front of 1000 people. Which six guests - dead or alive - would you invite to your ideal dinner party? Danny Kaye, Louis Armstrong, Amy Winehouse, John Candy, Jim Carrey and Michael Hutchence. What do you like to read? Anything in the true crime or biography genres. What would your last meal on earth be? Soupe à l’oignon followed by coq au vin. At school, I... Struggled to understand the importance of algebra - still to this day I am yet to need the reason of X equalling Y. What was your first or best concert? U2 at Etihad stadium.

Action brewing on epilepsy By Kyra Gillespie The E-Tea fundraising campaign for Epilepsy Action Australia is on again this November and a young Pakenham family is urging the community to get involved after their son Hunter’s experience with epilepsy. Members of the community are encouraged to host a morning or afternoon tea to raise funds for Epilepsy Action and to learn more about the impact of epilepsy on sufferers and their families. Shelley Morris, mother of now three-yearold son Hunter, had to battle with medical professionals to get them to take her son’s condition seriously. Hunter had what is known as infantile spasms, or West Syndrome, which is so rare that the Royal Children’s Hospital only sees about 20 to 30 cases per year. Shelley said Hunter’s debilitating seizures progressed very gradually and were barely noticeable at first. It began with the occasional little shudder but over time daily spasms caused him to cry and they began to emerge in clusters. One month later he was having four to five spasms each day. “I knew something wasn’t right, but each time I took him to my local GP I wasn’t taken seriously”, Shelley said. “They told me to ignore it, or that I was overreacting. “I had to fight for everything every step of the way.” When doctors finally had a closer look, Hunter was immediately put on heavy steroid treatment to counteract the effects that the seizures were having on his cognitive development.

The biggest concern around Hunter’s lapse in diagnosis is the possible damage that it could have done to his brain if left unattended for much longer. “Infantile spasms can cause serious brain damage, we are one of the lucky ones who got on top of treatment early enough to prevent permanent damage.” Shelley wants to use her experiences to raise awareness and educate others about the dire need for early intervention. She will be hosting her own E-Tea fundraiser for epilepsy and hopes that others will do the same. “Everyone’s idea of epilepsy is the typical drop seizures but as we’ve seen with Hunter they can be a lot more subtle than that. “That’s why I’m going to host a morning tea and I’ve been really active on the Infantile Community Discussion Page. “I’ve also given my phone number to Epilepsy Action just in case another family are going through the same thing. “I want people to know that they are not alone.” For parents seeking more information, visit the Facebook groups The Infantile Spasms Community Discussion Group and West Syndrome/Infantile Spasms Australia, or infantilespasmsproject.org. To host an E-Tea fundraiser, head to the Epilepsy Action Australia website to register the event and receive a free goodie pack to help get the fundraising started.

Setting sail By Kyra Gillespie The Lakeside Sailing Club is hosting a Discover Sailing day on Sunday 5 November at the Lakeside Lake. The free event aims to welcome community members to the world of sailing and show how fun, accessible and affordable sailing is. “The event is for people who have never sailed before to come along and try their hand at sailing,” Lakeside Sailing Club’s Stewart Baker said. “We want to show people who’ve never been on a boat how fun and exciting sailing is.” The event is open to people of all abilities from the age of six upwards and will run all day from 11am onwards. All boats and safety equipment will provided by the club on the day. All that is needed is clothes and shoes that can get wet, sunscreen and a hat. Shoes with non-marking soles are preferred.

GO TO STARCOMMUNITY.COM.AU FOR…

Welcome to your new-look Star News. The News has undergone a bit of a makeover and this edition heralds an exciting development - with a new name and crisp new design, and a few new features as well. The new masthead is an acknowledgement of the publication’s rich past as well as its future in print and digital under the umbrella of parent company, Star News Group. A family-owned independent news company, Star publishes a suite of newspapers and magazines with linked websites, including long-standing local titles the Pakenham Berwick Gazette and the Dandenong Star Journal, making it the dominant media company in the South-East. The Star News will still be the go-to destination for all you need to know locally, not only in print, but online as well at Starcommunity.com.au So to make sure you are fully informed and don’t miss out on any breaking news, like our Starnews Facebook page or follow us on Twitter @Starnews This week is huge for the area, with the opening of the City of Casey’s much anticipated - and debated - Bunjil Place development. The largest capital undertaking by a council in the state - and probably beyond Bunjil is being spruiked as a game-changer for the region. It will be interesting to monitor community feedback as council throws the doors open this weekend. Councils are often criticised and, being Australia’s largest, Casey is certainly not excluded from that scrutiny. But even the critics must acknowledge the council’s vision and foresight in delivering a project like Bunjil, which gives to the arts and wider community a facility to compare to those provided to the sports-mad population at Casey Fields, Casey Race and the like. GP runs on and on and on By Brendan Rees Bumper crowds flocked to the streets of Cranbourne to wave-off thousands of motorcyclists that roared into town for Casey’s annual Cranbourne GP Run. There was a sea of leather and chrome - and even Stormtroopers that lined the streets as bikers assembled for their mass ride to Phillip Island for the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix on Saturday 21 October. Flag-bearer Casey’s Councillor Wayne Smith said you could feel the electricity in the air. “The weather didn’t put too many off. It was fantastic. It was overcast but no wind which makes it always easier to go up in the cherrypicker.” He said it took nearly 30 minutes for the final bike to cross the start line as they headed off to Philip Island along the South Gippsland Highway for the Moto GP. “Matt Prins sang the national anthem and he nailed it. That was fantastic. He’s been a local performer for a long time and I was happy to recommend him to do it.” There was plenty of entertainment, stallholders and family activities such as craft, Daytona racing, face painting, workshops and market stalls set up along High Street with significant traffic management in place. Former Casey councillor Bob Halsall from Casey Radio also helped broadcast a live-to-air coverage of the event. City of Casey socialite Lady Uppity Crust also handed out flags, adding the event made a statement for Casey and “sets a scene” for the Moto GP. “I had a ball. It was fantastic to see so many people that had been coming for years. It puts Cranbourne on the map and the City of Casey. It was great for Lady Uppity to chat to the local radio and hand out flags to families,” she said.

Riders get revved up for the annual event. 173683 “And to have Cr Wayne Smith and Cr Amanda Stapleton doing the flag wave-off was absolutely fantastic. Lady Uppity thanks the City of Casey and the volunteers for supporting this great event.” Dandenong Harley Owners Group held a fund-raising breakfast for charity group Very Special Kids. “We took nearly $2000 and that money then gets presented in a cheque to the Very Special Kids down at Lord Somers Camp which we go down to twice a year and give them Harley rides. “We do the barbecue every year. We’ve been doing it since City of Casey created it. We get a heap of our members to go down there,” said Rodney Gadsden, merchandise officer for Dandenong Harley Owners Group.

He said it was a worthy cause each year, with the group raising nearly $50,000 since participating in the GP Run. “So the money we made from the GP Run will be presented to them during our next visit in February,” he said. “It’s a very good event. We love it. We ride these big machines that we’ve all dreamt of having and now that we’ve got them we may as well brighten up the kids and give them a smile. They love riding on them. They have a ball.” Cranbourne CFA First Lieutenant Dennis Latchford said: “We have the truck down there every year. For two reasons, for one publicity for the kids to climb through it but we’re also down there if something happens in the main street we’ve got a truck ready to go.”

5 YEARS UNLIMITED KM WARRANTY & ROADSIDE ASSIST

“You quite often pick up a few more volunteers out of it. They start talking and get interested in it.” Narre Warren SES also had their truck on display, with kids jumping with excitement into the front seat. “We were there from a community education perspective. We gave out lots of pamphlets, and little soft toy trucks and pens. “We give some to the kids and talk to the parents for five minutes on what they do and how they can how they can prepare in their home for storm and emergencies,” said Narre Warren SES Controller Clinton Brown. He said of all the major events they’d attended in the past, the GP Run was the “biggest crowd by far.” Senior Sergeant Alan Dew of Cranbourne Police said the GP Run went well. “The public were well behaved and they stayed back from the roads. We didn’t have any issues as far as I’m aware,” he said. Money raised will go to the Casey-Cardinia Foundation to help community groups across the region. “We had 14 volunteers assisting the foundation’s tin rattling at the GP Event on Saturday. We raised $907,” said Casey-Cardinia Foundation chairman Paul Thomas. He said the foundation was grateful to be chosen by the City of Casey as the event’s charity partner this year. “It was the first time the foundation had been involved in the event. The fund-raising and generosity of the community was appreciated. It was also an opportunity for the foundation to connect with the community and explain the work it does. “The foundation provides grants to numerous Casey Cardinia not for profit community groups each year and assists older persons, youth, those with a disability and the disadvantaged,” Mr Thomas said.

Regarding the Tasmanian tiger. In my humble opinion Parks Victoria needs to be bought into the the 21st century as this public sector union dominated monopoly thanks to the State Labor Government has for its 10 years of taxpayer-funded monopoly produced world’s worst practice environmental outcomes. From rorting the Victorian taxpayer, spending massive amounts on a small army of job for life unproductive and unaccountable rangers to its key role on Black Saturday in its failure to have a basic ecological burning regime, Parks Victoria is well-known throughout Victoria for its ongoing failure. The State Labor Government refuses to let private enterprise into the ranger and scientific functions to bring competition. From lack of mammal surveys to pest management incompetence, the list goes on funded by you the taxpayer. This is costing the environment, taxpayers and tourism. In November 1998 I have no doubt I videotaped a Tasmanian tiger in South Gippsland. There are three possibilities on our tigers that exist in Victoria - introduced, remnant or both. Remnant Tasmanian devils survived on the mainland until about 600 years ago, the remnant Tasmanian bettong survived in Victoria into the 1910s and the remnant Tasmanian pademelon survived in Victoria until the 1930s. I have a detailed introduction theory that Tasmanian tigers were introduced in Wilsons Promontory national park between 1909-1915,

On 24 October the Berwick Cranbourne News Facebook Page shared a story of the Cranbourne train line achieving a two-year high when it came to punctuality. One reader posed a question to Public Transport Victoria online: Lisa Sturzaker: This can’t be right. Maybe the ones that don’t get cancelled are punctual? Ah, I see now. If it’s going to run late, just don’t run it at all. Is that how it works PTV? Please explain the ones that terminate at Dandenong when they are supposed to go to Cranbourne, or the ones that go direct to Flinders Street when they are supposed to go through the loop? A marathon effort By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Usually, there are highs and lows, including the “wall” around the 32-34 kilometre mark. Sometimes you get a second wind, sometimes there’s no wind, she says.

“It’s as much about mind as about body.” After New York, her next bucket-list item is the Belfast Marathon. It’s not as prestigious as the New York race, but it will be a proud moment to run in her Northern Irish homeland.

He played TAC Cup with Dandenong Stingrays and was then drafted by St Kilda in the same year as Nick Riewoldt. Recently, Berry’s life of family, hard work and good health was put on hold due to a severe neck injury, Mr Dessi said. The applicant seemed to have found himself in “some financial straits”. “He is someone who understands he ought to desist whatever he is doing now.” Berry had been previously convicted of dishonestly receiving stolen goods at Frankston Magistrates’ Court in November 2016, the court heard. Police opposed bail, describing the combination of Berry’s drug addiction and weapons as a risk to the community - as well as to his drug-dealing victims. Most of the ammunition and drugs were accessible to young children living in the home, First Const Budge said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen pondered how Berry’s partner - though with no criminal record - could not have known about the weapons and drugs at home. Mr Vandersteen said there was quite strong evidence against Berry, but the applicant had been open and frank about the matter. He said Berry’s risk of re-offending could be managed due to his age, lack of relevant priors, availability of drug treatment on the CISP program, and family support. The bail conditions included a night curfew, a ban on leaving Victoria, daily reporting to police and to comply with the CISP program. Berry was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 2 November.

Well, this is one off the bucket list for Berwick’s Julie McKnight. The 45-year-old endurance runner will be living the dream while she sweats and struggles through the famous New York Marathon on 5 November. She’ll be cheered on by a touring contingent of family and friends. “People have told me there’s people lining the street, with 60,000 runners. I just can’t imagine what it’s going to be like. “There’s going to be a lot of ‘Wow’ moments.” Ms McKnight won a place at the start line through a ballot - on her third attempt. She is one of only 10,000 international runners who were invited to the 42-kilometre race. Though not quick enough for automatic qualification, she is “good for age”, she says. Ms McKnight has been building for the race, running up to 50 kilometres a week with the Pakenham Road Runners and with the Running in the Burbs group in Wheelers Hill. She’s now in the tapering stage of her 12week build-up specifically for the race. “Training’s the hard bit - it’s longer than the race itself. “You need a supportive family and husband to be able to fit those long runs in. “Just getting to the start line is an achievement.” Once overweight, Ms McKnight has proudly come a long way since taking up running nine years ago. Her first marathon was in 2011, which has been followed by a series of marathons and 50-kilometre ultra-marathons in Melbourne and Victoria. “Because they go for so long, you try to take in the scenery.” But it’s hard to predict how your marathon

Councillors play Goldilocks at Bunjil There has been some early road-testing of some of Bunjil Place’s junior-sized equipment by some adventurous adults. On a preview tour of their new premises, Casey councillors tried out the children’s playground equipment with abundant enthusiasm. Some even managed to snuggle up in some of the children's library’s most cosy corners.

Cheeky trick on Tigers fan boss Who was the mischievous staff member who played a cheeky trick on their chief executive during a state ministerial visit? Knowing her boss was a keen Tigers fan, she helpfully handed him an umbrella to keep off the drizzle. An umbrella emblazoned with the colours and logo of the dreaded Magpies!

Some white armour had heads turning at last Saturday’s Cranbourne GP Run on 21 October. More than 6000 people turned out to celebrate the event where thousands of bikes lined High Street for their mass ride to Phillip Island for the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix. But crowds may have been forgiven for a moment that they were a part of a Hollywood set as a couple of bikers were spotted donned in Stormtrooper costumes from the movie blockbuster Star Wars. “That was different. Haven’t had that before,” said Casey Cr Wayne Smith.

Community members shared a brew and their views with police on Wednesday 4 October as part of National Coffee with a Cop Day, which was hosted by Donut King at Cranbourne Park. Casey Community Engagement Officer Acting Sergeant Laura Carter said the hour-long event was hosted by cafes at shopping centres across Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong. Sgt Carter said Cranbourne Park hosted monthly events, usually on the last Wednesday of the month, and will be hosting again on the 26 October.

How do you like your coffee? Espresso, macchiato, latte or cappuccino? When it comes to Coffee with a Cop, Casey residents were spoilt for choice.

An overly-casual lawyer was read the Riot Act during a recent Children’s Court hearing. The lawyer, who was called to the bench, hurriedly told the court from the doorway that his client was still in bed and he was trying to make some calls. He then backed out the door before the judge admonished him. “I haven’t excused you yet,” the judge said. “I let it pass the first time when you just addressed me from the door. Are there some issues?”

Good health The first sod has been turned on a $135 million expansion of Casey Hospital. Premier Daniel Andrews and Health Minister Jill Hennessy turned the turf and visited new-born Liam in the hospital’s maternity unit on 25 October, flanked by local MPs Luke Donnellan and Judith Couacaud Graley. The expansion includes the hospital’s first 12-bed intensive care unit, 128 multi-day beds, 12 day surgical beds and six operating theatres. Monash Health chief executive Andrew Stripp said the expansion would not just meet current demand of the rapidly-growing SouthEast but “future proof” the hospital for many years. The hospital will treat 25,000 extra patients, perform an extra 8000 operations and support

an extra 1300 births per year as a result. The project includes a redeveloped emergency department short-stay unit, retail and cafe area and 330 extra car spaces. The bigger hospital caters for Casey’s ‘baby boom’ of 86 newborns a week. By 2035, this is expected to rise to 126 babies a week. Premier Andrews said it would allow families to access “high quality care they deserve, close to home”. Ms Graley said “growing families need services closer to where they live”. “I’m proud we’re putting them first with the world-class Casey Hospital revamp.” During construction, 92 jobs - including 21 apprenticeships - will be created. It is expected to be built by late 2019.

Repairs to a notoriously uneven section of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road have been further delayed. The $2.5 million works were expected to start on the road section south of Norfolk Drive, Narre Warren, as soon as late 2016, subject to investigating the cause of the road’s severe undulations. Works were revised to start in September after South East Water repaired a pipe on the eastern side of the road. However, they have been put back until December, with a completion date of early 2018. VicRoads reported that the issue was due to a “complex” mixture of ground conditions, inadequate drainage and a broken sewer pipe. South East Water has denied the 45-metre section of sewer pipe caused damage to the road. VicRoads metro south east operations di-

BUILDER HAMMERS HOME ITS AWARDS SPREE DESPITE the housing market contracting G.J. Gardner Homes continues to buck the trend with 20 per cent sales growth last year and a raft of recent acclaim including winning three Franchise Council of Australia (FCA) Excellence in Franchising Awards to help prove the point. The franchise beat back stiff competition to claim the Australian Established Franchisor of the Year, Excellence in International Franchising (for the second year running) and Franchisor Social Responsibility categories. These awards follow the company

recently listed one of the top-10 builders in Australia by Housing Institute of Australia Top 100 Report, named the #98 largest franchise in the world by international magazine Top Franchise and being named best and most trusted national home builder based on customer reviews on ProductReview.com.au. CEO Darren Wallis, who has been with the company since 1994, said it was rewarding to have the strength of the company recognised in so many forums. “It’s a little overwhelming, to be honest, but in a good way,” he said.

“One award would’ve have been really great so to win all three FCA awards is amazing. “To be recognised by our peers for providing a business model that is supporting franchisees and helping so many people be successful is very rewarding and humbling,” Mr Wallis said. “I know it sounds cliché but we are in this position because of the amazing team of franchisees, master franchisees and support staff we have around the world making this business such a success.”

Why Kathy? Why the BEST house in Lakeside? Kathy Burgstahler has been running her own successful real estate agency since 2013. She is one of the first estate agents to do away with an office entirely and runs her business on a fully mobile basis, selling property all over Victoria. As a result of being such a trailblazer, she was featured on TV and in the global “Top Agent” Magazine as the featured Cover Agent for 2015. Being a sole trader and not restricted by franchise agreements, not only does she sell property everywhere BUT her client base is from everywhere as a result. And with NO office, she makes far greater use of the Internet including social media for her advertising. Despite being mobile, Kathy has been based in Lakeside Pakenham since 2008. She is the ONLY local real estate agent to have been President of the Lakeside Residents’ Group for 3 years, and the ONLY local real estate agent sitting on several community volunteer committees since 2008 because she is so passionate about Cardinia Shire and all it has to offer. So it makes perfect sense that when arguably the BEST property in Lakeside was to go up for sale, who better to list it? Not only does Kathy know Lakeside like the back of her hand, but her mobile business meant that she has had lots of experience selling multimillion dollar properties in suburbs such as Glen Waverley, Box Hill, Blackburn South etc. She knows quality when she sees it, and having jogged past this house every single day since 2008, she knows every inch of it by heart and knows just how special it is! 29 Clearwater Drive Pakenham is truly ‘one of a kind’. Whoever buys this house can boast that they not only bought the ‘best house in the best street’ but that they bought the BEST house in Lakeside Pakenham! Approximately 13 years old and fully renovated to the highest specifications, this house has so many inclusions that it reads like a lottery wish list. • Enormous block of approximately 933m2, with a grand front entrance on prestigious Clearwater Drive and private rear gate access directly onto the Lake and it’s 1.5km walking circle (leading to all the other bike paths, tracks, and dog ‘off leash’ areas). • 5 Bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 3 Car spaces WITH rear access • Zoned refrigerated cooling and ducted gas heating plus a Coonara • All windows double glazed PVC and all internal walls and loor cavities insulated for extra privacy and energy efficiency • 27 Solar Panels with 5.13kw output, solar gas boosted hot water • 2.7m ceilings both upstairs AND downstairs, with doors being 2.4 high and solid timber • Kempas hardwood looring • 4500litre water tank, multiple power points in and out, multiple water point outside, multiple sheds • 3 phase power to garage • Ballroom/Studio/Theatre/Gym with reinforced steel looring for that full size billiard table you always wanted The list goes on and on. Inspection is by appointment only. This is Lakeside living at its best with complete privacy and convenience (you can walk to literally EVERYTHING you could possibly need). Call Kathy now to arrange an inspection and do not let your dream home get away!

SMARTER. BOLDER. FASTER. |

Thursday, 26 October, 2017

ON an enormous block of 933 square metres, this home was built about 13 years ago and has recently undergone a renovation to the highest specifications. The double storey mansion has everything anyone could possibly wish for, and then some. The address alone is a ‘double whammy’. Located on prestigious Clearwater Drive, the house backs directly onto the iconic Lakeside Lake. The new owners will be able to walk to shops, cafes, restaurants, medical and dental clinics, schools, the Cardinia Cultural Centre, the amphitheatre, parks and public transport. And don’t forget that the biggest drawcard of this estate, the Lake with 1.5km of walking trail right around it, is just outside the back yard and accessible via a private gate. From the triple upstairs balcony, the view over the lake is breathtaking at any time of day or night. Buy that telescope the kids have always wanted and watch the stars overhead at night and the wildlife during the day. From the private fully fenced and gated back yard, the new owners will be able to swim in their private pool, garden in the veggie patch, or just let the kids play safely on the grass. Inside, the house has five enormous bedrooms with the downstairs master suite which is fit for a celebrity. A large dressing room, enormous ensuite with his and hers vanities and oversized shower will make the new owners think they are in a five-star hotel. Even the large family bathroom has

double vanities (the kids will thank you) and an oversized shower! A downstairs entertaining area leads out to an undercover outdoor eating area and pool, and features a kitchenette. Home master chefs will love the enormous upstairs kitchen that has oodles of storage and bench space, or they can create and serve meals downstairs directly in the kitchenette, complete with its own dishwasher to save carting stuff back upstairs. Games enthusiasts can make full use of the reinforced floor in the ball room (yes, that’s right, this house has its own upstairs ballroom) to put in that full-sized billiard table the family has always wanted. Or use the ballroom for that home cinema, home gym, home dance or yoga studio. There is zoned ducted gas heating, refrigerated cooling, ducted vacuuming, 27 solar panels with 5.13kw input, solar gas boosted hot water, double glazed PVC windows and 2.7m ceilings throughout. There is Kempas hardwood flooring, solid timber doors, a massive four-car garage with remote-controlled panel lift door with side remote controlled roller door, multiple sheds, multiple power points in and out, taps on all corners of the house, a 4500 litre water tank, double insulated ceilings and insulation between all internal walls to ease noise reduction, a fully wired for an alarm system… the list of inclusions goes on and on. This is Lakeside living at its best with complete privacy and convenience. Inspect now and do not let this dream home get away. ●

PROPERTY NEWS

ONE DOOR CLOSES, ANOTHER OPENS ... OVER the past nine months, we have been highlighting major events within the history of Frank Facey Real Estate. We have seen how one man’s quest to establish a successful real estate business in Dandenong, proved to be an inspirational decision, and now, 100 years later, that business incorporates: First National Neilson Partners, Facey IndustrialCommercial, Hall and Partners First National and Parklea. During the course of this pioneering company’s expansion, there were significant changes and new directions taken. The business grew to embrace three generations of Facey’s and a host of dedicated staff; many of whom have earned esteemed reputations within the company and within the community. The South Eastern Corridor became dotted with Frank Facey First National offices; Narre Warren, Berwick, Endeavour Hills, Mulgrave, Glen Waverly and Pakenham. The ‘Facey Industrial-Commercial’ business thrived as a specialised entity and ‘Parklea’ moved ahead in leaps and bounds. All throughout the Shires of Casey and Cardinia enormous change was transforming the landscape as new developments were undertaken to accommodate the ever-increasing population. To keep abreast of the demand and in acknowledgement of the changing profile of the area, Frank Facey First National Real Estate underwent significant restructuring to ensure that all future requirements would be met by each office.

In 2005 First National Glen Waverly was sold and the six remaining offices were split into two separate groups. Frank Facey Pty Ltd was then trading as ‘First National Frank Facey’ with directors Andrew Facey (third generation Facey), Ross Neilson (managing director based at Narre Warren), Peter Watson (partner) running Berwick office, Todd McKenna (partner) running the Pakenham Office and Allison Holzer managing the rental departments in all three offices.

Hall and Partners First National was then reorganised, with Michael Hall as managing director, his son Adrian Hall running Mulgrave office and business partner Gary Andrews running Endeavour Hills office. Today, Michael and his two sons Adrian and Leigh with partner Tim Retallack successfully run this group. In 2011 Andrew Facey reserved the name ‘Frank Facey’ for his development company and the company’s trading

name became ‘First National Real Estate Neilson Partners’, covering Berwick, Narre Warren and Pakenham. At this time, Allison Holzer became the fifth partner in the business and Andrew Facey moved his company, ‘Parklea’ to its present location in Officer. Next month we feature the property management arm of the business, as its success is of paramount importance going forward. ● 12369405-EPJ43-17

BUSINESS IN FOCUS

Dive in for the open day Poolside Beaconsfield will be joining forces with the Beaconsfield Community Bank to hold its annual open and sale day on Saturday 28 October. Having taken over the business 12 months ago, director and owner of Poolside Beaconsfield Grant Forbes said that this year the celebrations would take on a more community feel and encouraged local residents to become involved in supporting their town. “The store has held an open day for at least four or five years,” Grant said. “The open day is, arguably, one of the biggest, if not the biggest in the state of Victoria - it is huge. “In the industry, it’s renowned, everyone knows about it. But in the past it’s been all about us. “I wanted the open day this year to be more of a community event. So I approached the Bendigo Bank as they’re big on the community aspect and they’ve agreed to come on board. “There will be a barbecue out the front and 100 per cent of the gold coin donations from that will go to the OTIS Foundation to support families dealing with breast cancer.” The day will also feature local barista Ben from C-U-Latte as well as kids’ entertainment in the form of jumping castles and fairy floss. For those in the market for pool supplies, there will be up to 30 per cent off products storewide as well as a display of Sapphire Spas. But as Grant explained, the new open day is driven by his strong belief in locals supporting locals and their communities. For Grant, this is done through sponsoring local organizations such as the Beaconsfield Football and Beaconsfield Cricket clubs. “It’s important for communities to support their own because for a small business to endure they rely on their local community. “Let’s face it, if you have a pool and live in Brighton, you’re not coming to Beaconsfield to get your products. So I’m relying on the peo-

Grant and Sam from Poolside Beaconsfield with Andrew from the Bendigo Bank who are teaming up to celebrate Poolside Beaconsfield's 2017 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS annual open day. 173776 ple around us and in return they expect good quality and exceptional service.” It’s through upholding the company’s mission statement that Grant and his team are able to deliver on these customer expectations. “We strive to deliver a 10/10 experience everyday by listening to our customers and understanding their specific needs,” Poolside Beaconsfield’s mission statement reads. “(This is also achieved by) our team providing innovative, quality products and services to make owning a pool or spa a simple pleasure.” Poolside Beaconsfield offers water testing,

pool services, spas, pool equipment repairs and replacement as well as solar heating sales and repairs. They sell a wide range of equipment needed for pools including BioGuard chemicals, Hayward and Astral pool equipment, pool covers and rollers, solar heating, dolphin robot cleaners, pool toys and sapphire spas. Poolside Beaconsfield’s experienced team services the areas of Beaconsfield, Berwick, Pakenham, Cranbourne, Narre Warren, Clyde and surrounds assuring customers that they will receive the best service and products for all their pool and spa needs.

family men who also have a tireless commitment to their careers. “We work full-time, and we train as much as we can, but we still have to balance our work/ life ratio which is a big deal,” Trimble said. “It was tremendous and we plan on going again. We’re going to do the Philippines next year, we think, in May.” As well as at the Asian Open, Trimble competed this year in Brazil where he also medalled. “For me, it’s been a massive year - gold in Brazil, and then gold in Japan,” he said. “We probably train three or four times a week, sometimes more.

Laetisha takes her top shot By Nick Creely Berwick sport shooter and Rio Olympian Laetisha Scanlan is ambitious and desperate to represent her country. The 27-year-old, who was part of the Rio Olympics in 2016, is eyeing off more national honours with Australia with the Commonwealth Games coming to the Gold Coast in 2018 and the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. “Our team will be announced at the end of December (for the Commonwealth Games) I’ve had some really solid scores over the past four competitions, so I’m quietly confident of getting selected,” she said. “I haven’t achieved everything I’ve wanted to, and that’s probably why I’ve stayed in so long, but it’s really exciting to have a home Commonwealth Games, and I’m looking forward to hopefully Tokyo 2020 as well.” Stemming from childhood, Laetisha has always been a passionate advocate for the sport, which requires the utmost accuracy and precision. “It’s a very difficult sport to be professional in Australia - most people do it for the love of it, so it’s definitely a passion I’ve had over the past ten years,” she said. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

“It probably stems from my father - he got me out to the range at a young age, and it started out as a bonding thing for us, and it just went on from there.” With shooting still a relatively under-resourced sport, Laetisha said the demands can be challenging in various ways, but believes she has the right mind frame to succeed. “I missed out on the London 2012 games, and focused really hard on making the Rio team - at the end of the day you have to make a decision about making a life and having a sporting career, it’s hard to juggle,” she said. “Talent can get you so far, and I’ve seen a lot of talented people, but if you don’t have that commitment, I don’t think you’ll achieve your true potential.” She said the experience of making the Rio team is something she will never forget, and hopes that her success there will ensure she is better prepared to achieve her dream of winning a gold medal for Australia in the future. “It was amazing (the Olympics), and to achieve your goal of making the team was great - I was lucky enough to make the final, and unfortunately didn’t do as well as I hoped and came fifth, but it was a great learning lesson, and put me in good stead for the future,” she said.

“I live in Longwarry and Steve is in Langwarrin so it’s a bit of a trek to get here (Pakenham). It’s not like we’re just around the corner, but it’s absolutely worthwhile. “I’m 48 and I started (in the sport) at 46 because I thought I needed to do something. I lost some weight and felt great and it’s been fantastic. Now my wife and my children all come and train as well.” Williams and Trimble both raved about the Gracie Elite academy, which is based at Bate Close in Pakenham. “It’s a great club - it’s very family-oriented and the boys are great,” Williams said. “That’s one of the things that makes the

Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT wins over there even more enjoyable - you get to go over there with your mates who’re more like your brothers. Jhunior is not just a coach, he’s like your best mate as well. “But this isn’t just about the win - it’s about the training and discipline behind it. “Like Jhunior says, ‘the medal is just a medal’. It’s all the things that get you over there (that make it such an achievement).” Neither Williams nor Trimble would be able to achieve their success without the unending support of their wives, children, and club mates. “Jiu Jitsu is actually a lifestyle and I just wish I’d started it when I was a much younger guy.”

Pakenham’s Gracie Elite Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy has once again shone in the bright lights of the international stage with two of its members, Tony Trimble and Steve Williams, walking away with a series of medals from the Asian Open in Tokyo recently. Trimble, a 6’5” professional firefighter, took home a gold medal in the intermediate super heavyweight class (up to 100 kilograms) while Williams - a policeman - won the novice heavyweight class (up to 92). Trimble also took home a bronze medal in the open division. “To go over there and compete was fantastic and I think the opportunity was really good for me because the level of competition was vastly different compared to what it is in Australia, it’s fair to say,” Williams said, with Trimble adding: “That’s not to denigrate here, but over there it’s a much bigger sport. They compete every weekend. “The competition we went to was massive - people travelled from all over the world to go there. There was a lot of Americans, a lot of Brazilians, some Europeans and obviously the Japanese. It’s a big sport for them.” Coached by the renowned Jhunior Guarnido, who has well in excess of 20 years’ experience in the discipline, the pair did Melbourne’s south east proud. “In my division there was seven of us all from different parts of the world who’d flown to compete at that tournament so that puts it into perspective for me,” Williams said. “People are spending thousands of dollars, or even getting sponsored to go over there and compete and it was great - especially doing it with your mates.” Both Williams and Trimble are devoted

Hussey ton: Gulls airborne By Russell Bennett Two-day cricket hit the West Gippsland Cricket Association with a bang on Saturday with Tooradin and Kooweerup firing ominous warning shots across the competition, and Upper Beaconsfield and Clyde looming as genuine finals contenders. Tom Hussey’s brilliant century on the opening day’s play of round four against Pakenham guided Tooradin to 7/313 from its 80 overs. After the Seagulls won the toss, Hussey and opening partner Russell Lehman got off to a steady start - sitting on just 0/47 at drinks after 19 overs. Though Lehman fell shortly after to Chris Smith for 21, Hussey put the foot down - storming to 142 with support around him coming from Josh Lownds (16), Bradey Welsh (14), and Aaron Avery (38). After Hussey’s dismissal at 5/228, Avery, Kade Burns (24) and Dylan Sutton (33 not out) continued to launch from the platform already set - producing a huge chase for the Lions this week. Pakenham has the batting firepower there’s absolutely no doubt about it - but the question now turns to whether it can fire under the blowtorch lit by the competition’s early benchmark, Tooradin. At Cardinia, the hometown Bulls got off to a nightmarish start - rolled for just 84 in 32 overs in their first innings against Kooweerup. Only impressive young all-rounder Travis Wheller (36) made any real impact with the willow as the Bulls succumbed to an even Demons attack. Youngster Jack Bacon finished with the dream figures of 3/6 from his two overs while Jess Mathers (2/38), Mitch Davey (2/17) and Paul Bright (2/10) claimed two wickets apiece. The Demons made light work of their chase, reaching 1/99 off the back of an impressive half-century from Chris O’Hara before skipper Mark Cooper declared after just 26 overs

The Bulls had crawled to 0/38 off 20 overs in their second innings. “We were really surprised (to bowl them out like we did),” Cooper said of the Bulls in the

wake of the first day’s play. “They’d come off 200 in a one-dayer the week before, but we just kept taking wicket after wicket.” At Upper Beaconsfield, meanwhile, Maroons favourite son Julian Bayard recorded

Pakenham on course for night golf By Russell Bennett The Pakenham Golf Club will take on a new life this Friday night with a round of night golf to be played across the course as part of Golf Month - a nationwide celebration of the sport. This year marks the third time night golf will have taken to the course at Pakenham, and the concept is exactly how it sounds - golf by night, with glow-in-the-dark balls and equipment. “It’s an event we’ve run previously at another club I was at and it went over really well,” Pakenham Golf Club’s general manager and head professional, Haydn Thompson, said. “We ran our first night golf here in 2014. It was actually on 31 October, so Halloween and it worked really well. There hadn’t been a lot of member events for quite a while here so it got a really good reaction and we filled it really quickly. “You can have your dinner at 6pm or 6.30pm, and get on the course by 7pm to get everyone out there while it’s dusk. It’s a shotgun start so players are starting on different holes so it means that everyone gets out to their holes safely but the effect of the glow balls, glow sticks and lights that we use is obviously taking effect.” As Thompson explains, night golf is “just a different look at golf”. “Golf is struggling a little bit to create its own kind of Twenty20 to appeal to younger people and expose the game to a different audience,” he said. “I think every sport is looking at how to create its own Twenty20. “Golf has struggled a little bit with it because no matter which way you come at it, it’s still a time-consuming sport. “This is just another way of exposing the club and to cater to different audiences. “Within golf there has been that rivalry mentality - that it’s us versus them. But as long as golf is healthy and golf is doing well, we’ll all do well as clubs. “If we do what we do here well enough, people will see us as an option.” Thompson explained that golf had never had more participants, but fewer members. 34 STAR NEWS

Night golf returns to the Pakenham Golf Club this Friday night. “We’re trying to come at it from a different angle,” he said. “You don’t change everything you do to suit the next generation, and you don’t stick with what you’ve always done just to suit the traditionalists - it’s a balancing act.” Throughout the month of October, golf

clubs and facilities across the country will throw open their doors and welcome people to take part in a Golf Month activity such as night golf. Pakenham’s event this Friday night and costs $50 per player and starts at 6pm with dinner at 6.30pm and tee off from 7.45pm.

his maiden Premier grade century with his 125 guiding his side to 326 in its first innings against Emerald. Bayard said there’s a great feeling around the current Maroons first XI, with a host of new faces stepping up and making an immediate impact. “Everyone has just clicked, and we’re just having fun - enjoying a laugh and a joke with each other,” he said, adding that his side had managed to build on its momentum despite not yet playing its best cricket this season. Interestingly, the last time Bayard reached triple figures was also against Emerald - in B Grade back in the 2007/’08 season. Clinton Marsh finished with 5/57 from his 16 overs for the Bombers while Kulith Rabel (40) and Bathiya Perera (56) also got among the runs for the Maroons. Bayard admitted he was lucky to survive the 80s, after being caught down leg side only to have the wicket-keeper celebrate prematurely and watch the ball slip out of his grasp. He said he’d had a frustrating few years, personally, with the bat - not being able to convert a string of starts. “I’ve put myself in a strong position, but then got out and that’s put other guys in to face bowlers on top of their games,” he said. “It was just nice to be able to go on with it.” But now, the focus turns Upper Beac’s inform bowling this week. “We’ve got a really tough stretch of games ahead against sides that are the pinnacle of the competition,” he said. “We need to stay ahead of the ledger.” In the remaining game of the round, Shane White tore through Merinda Park - taking 6/23 for Clyde as the Cobras were dismissed for just 109. MOTORING

Subaru shows it’s unique By Alistair Kennedy The crew from Monty Python may well have had the Subaru Levorg in mind when they coined the phrase “And now for something completely different ...” because there’s nothing else on the Australian market that can quite match this Japanese station wagon’s combination of stylish looks, high-performance, practicality and value. For starters it’s a station wagon which makes it something of a rarity in this SUVcentric era. Add the fact that it shares much of its underbody componentry with Australia’s favourite performance car, the Subaru WRX. About the only ugly thing about Levorg is its name which we’re told by Subaru is a mixed up merge of Legacy (the name the rest of the world uses for Liberty), Evolution and Touring. Don’t quite see it ourselves, not that it really matters. On sale here since June 2016 Levorg was given an upgrade in August this year that included a new entry-level model (from $35,990) with a smaller 1.6-litre engine and, at the opposite end of the range, a new STI Sport model. There were also suspension and brake enhancements; revised front bumper and grille; and a number of new features including hill hold, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, dusk sensing headlights, a second camera and smart rear view mirror. Four models are offered - Levorg 1.6 GT, 1.6 GT Premium, 2.0 GT-S, and 2.0 STI Sport. For a company that rates substance over style Subaru, has pulled a rabbit out of the hat. From the front it’s all WRX with its bold grille and large bonnet scoop but the standout feature is its Euro-wagon profile which is a break from the conservative boxiness of previ-

Subaru Levorg is arguably the best looking car ever penned by the Japanese maker. ous Impreza and Liberty wagons. The rear is more hatch than wagon in appearance, with some neat sculpted lines. The new Levorg STI Sport is distinguished by 18-inch wheels and an STI body kit with exhaust tips, side sill plates and a different design of front and rear bumpers. WR Blue is available as a colour option. Interior space is good with reasonable legroom in the back seat, there’s certainly enough space for children who haven’t yet reached the hulking-teen stage. The wagon’s load area is well shaped and easy to load. The Levorg STI Sport adds STI steering wheel and instrument cluster logo, red stitching and maroon leather trimmed seats. The new 1.6-litre, the first of its kind to be used in an Australian Subaru, is a horizontallyopposed (Boxer) turbocharged petrol unit. It generates up to 125 kilowatts of power from 4800 rpm and 250 Newton metres of torque between 1800 and 4800 revs.

The 2.0-litre engine needs no introduction. It’s exactly the same highly-popular unit that powers the WRX with outputs of 197 kW and 350 Nm from 2400 rpm. A continuously variable transmission with six manual overrides takes torque to all four wheels by way of Subaru’s symmetrical allwheel-drive system. The 2.0-litre models have variable torque distribution, the 1.6 gets active torque split. Levorg’s CVT incorporates the Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-Drive) system that includes three options: Intelligent, Sport and Sports Sharp (2.0 models only) to suit all driving styles. Standard safety equipment across the range includes seven airbags; stability and traction control; ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist; and the third generation of Subaru’s EyeSight driver assist system that includes adaptive cruise control, brake light recognition, lead vehicle start alert,

lane departure warning, pre-collision braking assist and pre-collision steering assist. Models above the entry-level 1.6 GT get Subaru’s Vision Assist package which includes blind spot monitor, high beam assist, lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert. One clever innovation in all variants above the 1.6 GT is Smart Rearview Mirror which uses a camera mounted inside and above the rear tailgate glass to project the area behind the car onto the rearview mirror. This is activated by using the anti-dazzle lever at the bottom of the mirror. Switching the lever back returns to the normal mirror mode. The camera view is around 20 per cent wider than the normal mirror view and is especially useful in fluctuating light conditions or when passengers and/or cargo obscure things. The three higher-spec models also get Front View Monitor which uses a camera at the front passenger side of the car to display images onto the smaller Multi-Function Display and check for approaching vehicles or pedestrians as well as the distance from the kerb. Our test car was the Levorg 2.0 GT-S with its standard sunroof which meant lowering the driver’s seat to the lowest setting for me to fit. The seats are comfortable and supportive.
