Congratulations!

After many years of planning and construction, the time has come to officially open the newly constructed Bunjil Place this weekend.

When we first announced our plan to build the $125 million facility in June 2013, the concepts looked inspiring and magnificent. To see how the plans and vision have now come to life is spectacular and I know our community will be impressed when they first walk through the doors.

Bunjil Place offers a variety of events, shows, exhibitions, live performances, business conferences and more to enliven the precinct year-round. There’s no doubt about it, Bunjil Place will offer something for everyone.

When we set about designing Bunjil Place, our motivation was the community. We made it our mission to create an inviting central heart for the community, that celebrates participation belonging and civic pride.

The ways in which our community will benefit from this facility are extraordinary. Be it through the new modern library set over three levels, the theatre fitted to seat 800 people, within the function centre capable of hosting a variety of events, wandering through the spacious gallery, through to the outdoor community plaza equipped with a big screen, playground, water features and war memorial.

Not only am I proud of the building, I am also proud of the financial strength behind it. At the beginning, we were faced with the prospect of paying off a 30 year loan of $90 million.

Over the last four years, we actively lobbied our federal government and through the valuable assistance of Jason Wood MP, Federal Member for La Trobe we achieved a $10 million grant towards the construction.

In addition, a number of

underperforming assets were disposed, ultimately reducing our loan requirement to $62 million, and the payback period to now only nine years!

So not only do we now have a beautiful precinct to enjoy, but we can also enjoy it without putting pressure on our rates. It’s an amazing success story for the city!

Joined by my fellow Councillors and Jason Wood MP, Federal Member for La Trobe, I will be commencing the official opening

celebrations on Saturday 28 October from 10.40 am with a Welcome to Country, ribbon cutting and plaque unveiling.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the opening weekend!

A home in Rose Garden Court, Narre Warren North has sold for $2.3 million.

A seven-bedroom mansion has broken the $2-million barrier for what is believed to be the first time in Narre Warren North.

The 31 Rose Garden Court property, marketed with a slick video orchestrated by real estate agent Zed Nasheet, recently sold for $2.3 million.

That type of money buys you lots of space.

There’s an outdoor pool, a Hollywoodthemed theatre room with a bar, two covered balconies and a multi-purpose rumpus room - and pretty much everything you can imagine.

Mr Nasheet is starting to be known for his savvy marketing campaign of high-end real estate pitched at local and international buyers.

“It’s about the location (in this case) and the way you market it,” he says.

“It’s the best house that’s come on the market here.”

The sassy video for this property shines with actors and a show-stealing child as well as a Lamborghini, a Porsche and a Ferrari.

Don’t sweat terror

By Bonny Burrows A leading terrorism expert has said that despite the attempted radicalisation of Muslims in Greater Dandenong, domestic violence, alcohol and drug abuse were far more serious threats than Islamic State.

Professor Greg Barton, an academic and Deakin University, said that while he knows of the attempted radicalisation of Muslims in the Dandenong and Springvale areas, there was no cause for undue alarm.

His reassurance comes after remarks by a

South-East MP Jason Wood that the threat of IS terrorism cells in the area was of “real concern”.

But Professor Barton said locals shouldn’t be scare of their multicultural neighbours.

“We’re dealing with tiny minorities,” Professor Barton said.

“This is a very small fraction. We have hundreds of thousands of migrants working, raising families, assimilating with the community, just getting on with their lives.”

It was this assimilation, he said, that was

the antidote to radicalisation.

Australia had “probably gone as far as we can”, in pre-emptive terrorism legislation and polices, he argued.

Now it was time to work with the community and people at risk. He said Islamic State had attempted to recruit school children and adults up to 29 years old.

Professor Barton described the method used to radicalise a young person as ‘grooming’ and said it involved an older person gaining another’s trust through “fake friendship”.

The professor said that by maximising social connection and engagement of those at risk, the likelihood of radicalisation was reduced.

Blackmail claimed

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Doveton man, twice jailed for family violence, has been granted bail on appeal after claiming he was being blackmailed by the same victim.

On 9 October, Justice Jane Dixon of the Supreme Court of Victoria released the 29-yearold man on strict bail conditions including a fixed address, night curfew and daily reporting to police.

He was also ordered to comply with family violence intervention orders and not communicate with the ex-partner and her son.

The decision overturned the man’s failed bail application in Dandenong Magistrates’

Court on 18 September.

The man denied stalking, unlawful assault and persistently breaching an intervention order in Springvale in May - three days after being released from his second stint at prison.

He had been on two community corrections orders at the time.

Defence barrister Roona Nida claimed the man had been jailed twice due to “false” allegations made by the ex-partner, who had been blackmailing him for money.

On one occasion, the ex-partner alleged the man breached his intervention order by making about 130 phone calls to her on 23 April - while she had possession of his phone, Ms Nida said.

In February, she allegedly threatened to make “trouble” if he didn’t transfer his $36,000 car into her name. He is still paying off the car loan, insurance and maintenance, Ms Nida said.

“The applicant was unemployed and was forced to transfer ... unemployment benefits to (the ex-partner) in order to avoid going to prison.”

Ms Nida said two psychologists’ reports found the man had no intention of harming or taking revenge on the ex-partner or her boyfriend. Already on remand for more than four months, the man had attempted suicide and was at risk of mental deterioration if he spent a lengthy time in prison, Ms Nida said.

Student’s brain video wins global award

By Casey Neill A Keysborough student won a global award for his video about the brain.

Haileybury Year 7 student Anirudh Kathirvel put his own mind to good use in his five-minute submission to this year’s Brain Awareness Video Contest.

Leading neuroscientists included Anirudh’s explanation of optical phenomenon binocular rivalry in their top 10 shortlist.

Online voters then awarded him the People’s Choice Award.

“This win reiterates to me the fact that anything we do or want to do with passion combined with hard work will always show result,” he said.

“I truly believe this. My passion for neuroscience has taken me this far, and I can’t wait for my dreams to come true.”

The Society of Neuroscience runs the global competition that encourages participants to submit a short YouTube video explaining a neuroscience concept in a simple and imaginative way.

“The brain is the most complex and fascinating and yet most challenging to the researchers,” Anirudh said.

“The more we know about it, the less we understand.

“When you are learning about brain, you never get bored and learning continues.”

He’ll receive his award at the Society for Neuroscience Annual Conference in Washington, USA, next month.

Anirudh is no stranger to success. The Journal spoke with him following his win on The Great Australian Spelling Bee in 2015.

The nine-year-old had trumped 3000 applicants to win the contest, taking home a $50,000 education scholarship and $10,000 worth of goods for his school.

He started reading at age two.

“He wasn’t even talking,” mum Sujatha said.

“At his child care during reading time, he used to read instead of the teacher.”

Anirudh was completing an online neuroscience course run by Harvard University at the time and said he had a neuroscience career in his sights.

“So my curiosity is driving that, and I also

want to help people because there are neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s disease that devastate people’s lives.

A man who drew a sawn-off shotgun and robbed two people in a car in Dandenong has been jailed - and then faces likely deportation to New Zealand.

Heimana Robati, 23, was driving a stolen Hilux with three unknown passengers when he pulled up close behind a VW Jetta about 9.30pm on 21 March 2016, the County Court of Victoria heard.

Chief Judge Peter Kidd, in sentencing on 18 October, said the Hilux was parked so close that the Jetta could not be moved.

Robati demanded the Jetta’s driver to turn the car off, and pointed the weapon at the driver and passenger’s head while demanding their mobile phones.

During the robbery, Robati took a wallet, loose change and two phones.

“Don’t come back to this neighbourhood again,” he told the occupants.

Robati drove off and was followed by the Jetta. He waved his shotgun at the pursuing car.

After his arrest the next day, police seized 10 grams of methamphetamine in zip-lock bags from his home.

He claimed the substance was sea-salt, and denied he was involved in the armed robbery.

The stolen vehicle was never recovered.

Chief Judge Kidd said the use of a sawn-off shotgun made the offending “more serious, troubling and indeed terrifying”.

The two victims would have felt a “very high level of fear” during the hold-up.

Robati had served terms in custody for two previous armed robberies, and was on two community corrections orders at the time.

The latter reflected poorly on Robati’s attitude towards the law, Chief Judge Kidd said.

It was a substantial criminal history for a man of his age, the judge said.

His disadvantaged childhood included a Year 7 education, periods of being kicked out of home and heroin and ice abuse from his teens.

Chief Judge Kidd was encouraged by Robati’s drug-free stint and participation in courses while in jail since his arrest.

However, the judge was guarded about his rehabilitation prospects.

Robarti was jailed for up to four years, four months with a non-parole period of two years, 10 months. He had already served 507 days in pre-sentence custody.

The judge noted Robati faced likely deportation after his jail term, stemming from a twomonth sentence for breaching a community order in 2016.

It was the chance for Robati to make a fresh start in New Zealand, the judge said.

No smoke without ire New Tobacco Act restrictions have cut a Springvale cafe’s business in half.

Ali Adam from Cafe Asmara told the Journal that he’ll “probably change business, get into something else” following the 1 August changes.

The amendments to the Tobacco Act banned smoking in outdoor dining areas and included regulation of shisha tobacco and ecigarettes in the same way as other tobacco products.

Shisha now can’t be smoked anywhere that is smoke free.

Mr Adam said the cafe stopped serving

food.

“The shisha, we’re not doing the tobacco shisha, we’re doing the herbs because herbs are exempt,” he said.

“It’s a big shift.

“Not many people are accepting the herbs, but what can we do?”

The cafe opened 10 years ago and has patrons from all cultures and aged from their twenties to fifties.

He was welcoming about 1000 people through his doors each week prior to the legislation.

“We’ve dropped 50 per cent,” he said.

Colleen Hartland successfully amended the State Government’s Tobacco Act Amendment Bill to include shisha in State Parliament’s Upper House in September last year.

“We do not smoke in restaurants anymore and we do not smoke in eating places, so I do not think the water pipe should be exempted,” she said.

At the time, Australian Lebanese Medical Association president Wally Ahmar applauded the change. The cardiologist said there was a misconception that shisha was harmless.

“Shisha smoking is like smoking 200 cigarettes,” he said.

The brigades also called out the service providers to assist.

“We made the scene safe. We isolated the battery to the car so that wouldn’t cause any sparks,” he said.

Capt Sandford called for a Greater Dandenong Council building surveyor to make sure the structure was sound.

Following that visit, he enlisted the help of the SES to prop up walls and cover the crash hole with a tarp.

“We were on-scene nearly three hours,” he said.

He said the husband and wife who were asleep inside were not injured, and the driver had fled the scene.

“The force, it threw bricks up onto the roof of the house, and through a garden fence,” he said.

“It’s lucky they weren’t standing in the kitchen.”

A sleeping Noble Park couple woke to the sound of a car crashing into their home.

Noble Park Fire Brigade captain Terence Sandford said the vehicle left Kelvinside Road just before 2am on Saturday 14 October.

His crew was called to a gas leak at the scene.

“We pulled up and there was a car through a fence into a house,” he said.

“It had hit a gas meter out the front of the house. Gas was leaking out of the damaged meter.

“We isolated the gas and called for the gas company to attend.”

Capt Sandford and his Noble Park, Dandenong and Springvale colleagues also shut off water and electricity to the home.

“When the car had entered the house, it had entered where the kitchen was,” he said.

“The dishwasher was on the other side of the room. The sink was across the other side as well, so there was some water leaking.”

Family Keys to show

By Casey Neill William Keys was the Dandenong Show’s first president.

His great, great, granddaughter Ann Keys is continuing the family’s involvement.

She’s served in the animal nursery at the Dandenong Agricultural and Pastoral Society event for more than 20 years and is looking forward to getting back in there on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 November this year. “Because the family’s always been part of the show, I’ve liked to continue that,� she said.

Ms Keys explained that in 1871 Dunbar’s Hotel in Dandenong’s main street hosted a meeting to discuss launching an agricultural show.

The first show was held the following year.

William drowned just months later while trying to save cattle from floodwater in Bangholme.

She said that John Keys came on board in his place and that about 11 other members of the Keys family have since served as show president. “About eight or nine are life members,� she said. “They were great community people. “Agricultural shows in those days were a big part of the community.�

Ms Keys said the family was known for breeding Ayrshire dairy cattle.

Her father was Harold Keys, her grandfather was George and her great grandfather was Thomas. “They were all involved in farming in the Dandenong area, mostly with cattle,� she said.

Another Keys descendent, Rob Beauman, passed on responsibility for the animal nursery to Ms Keys.

She said it gave children the chance to meet animals they might only have otherwise seen on television.

Greater Dandenong Council is calling for feedback as the aquatic centre nears the end of its effective life.

The council is planning a new and improved centre, and has released a survey to guide the way forward.

Mayor Jim Memeti said Dandenong Oasis was built in 1976, underwent a major development in 1991 and received further upgrades in 2003.

Burglary, theft charges laid An erratic, axe-wielding man broke into five businesses in the Dandenong CBD during a bizarre burglary spree on Sunday 15 October.

Greater Dandenong CIU Senior Constable Liam Comrie said the 31-year-old Dandenong man was found “acting erratically� at a sixth business.

He alleged the man used an axe to access the shops and tried to steal cash registers.

But the show gives them the chance to get up close and personal with calves, baby goats, lambs, ducks and guinea pigs in the walk-in area.

There are hens, alpaca, sheep, goats and cattle in the farmyard section, and an enclosed glass cabinet with day-old chicks inside. “I think shows are really important because we’re such an urban society nowadays,� Ms Keys said.

“Children and adults have no idea where the products they eat and drink come from. “It’s really important to maintain that agricultural side of our lifestyle. “Shows are not just about show bags and food and fairy floss and the rides.�

The show has halved ticket prices this year.

Entry is $10 for adults, $5 for kids aged six to 16 years and free for children aged five years and under.

A stolen car went up in flames in Noble Park just hours after thieves took it from Dandenong.

The grey Nissan Pulsar sedan was stolen from Cleeland Street, Dandenong, on Sunday 15 October.

A passer-by spotted the burning vehicle in Bowmore Road in the early hours of Monday 16 October.

They called the CFA and fire crews extinguished the blaze.

Residents told police they heard a door slamming and a loud bang shortly before discovering the vehicle.

The Greater Dandenong CIU is investigating.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 25 October 1917 Dandenong Bowling Club The official opening of the D’nong bowling green took place on 17th when there was a large attendance and the president (Mr John Crump) duly declared the green open for the ensuing season.

Those present spent an enjoyable afternoon with speeches, refreshments and a game of bowls which helped to make the time pass pleasantly.

50 years ago 24 October 1967 A chook with four legs A chicken with four legs and four wings! Incredible as it may seem that is exactly what was brought into the Journal last week.

The freak chick is the property of Mr Greg Fox, Latham Cres, Dandenong.

When Mr Fox asked were we interested in a chicken with four legs and four wings we were sceptical but interested.

Carefully he unfolded the flaps of the box and withdrew the contents ... a newly hatched and perfectly formed chick.

The four legs were easily seen but the down had to be parted before the wings became apparent.

In all other aspects the chick was perfectly normal for a newly-hatched bird.

The egg from which the chick came was obtained on one of a half dozen batch from a neighbour who raises a few Indian game gross birds.

When this particular egg hatched the chick lived only a short time.

A spokesman for the veterinary research laboratory at Melbourne University said: “Ab-

normalities in chicks are not uncommon but this particular abnormality is rare.”

20 years ago 20 October 1997 Housing plans Plans to build an exclusive housing estate on Keysborough’s green wedge have been submitted to Greater Dandenong Council.

A group of landowners has unveiled plans to build 1200-1400 houses and a chain of parks and wetlands on about 142 hectares of the 325 hectare wedge.

The plans affect an area bounded by Hutton and Chapel roads, the Dingley Bypass reservation and Cheltenham and Springvale roads. Some of the land would be divided into lots of 0.4 hectare and two hectares.

The rest would be developed as wetlands and linked parks.

If the councillors approve the plans, the developers would pay for the establishment of three playing fields and change rooms at Tatterson Park.

They would also build a six-kilometre network of bike paths and pay for extensive replanting in the wetlands.

5 years ago 22 October 2012 Culture from within Noble Park writer and musician Kalyan Ky has a novel way to help young people learn about faith ‘n’ culture.

She is calling for creative submissions from people of all ages, faiths and backgrounds for a Faith N Culture Creative Encyclopaedia.

It’s a chance for young people to express who they are in their own words.

Savoury and sweet too Pardon my French Creperie has a permanent home at Dandenong Market.

It was established at South Melbourne Market and Chapel Street in South Yarra.

Owner and head crepe-maker John Milic serves up more than 20 crepe varieties ranging from sweet to savoury, vegetarian and gluten free options.

All of John’s crepes are hand-made using special cast iron grills created in France.

Some of his creations include the lamington crepe with chocolate fudge sauce, strawberry jam and desiccated coconut.

On the savoury side, there’s the egg, ham, cheese and chives crepe.

Crepes have always been a part of John’s life. His mother taught him how to make palacinka - the thin, European pancake - when he was 10 years old.

EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL He travelled the world and learnt how diners from near and far enjoyed the popular dish.

On a weekend away to Lorne, Victoria, in 2013 he stumbled across a crepe-maker on the street and it reignited his passion for them.

John started his journey towards opening his own creperie.

His Market Square stall also serves up sweet crepes with lemon and sugar, Nutella, Canadian maple syrup, fruit and more.

Dawn Vernon hadn’t even realised she’d lost her purse when 18-year-old Grayson Baines walked up her driveway to return it.

The Greater Dandenong Neighbourhood Watch president had dropped it in the Parkmore Shopping Centre car park while loading groceries into her car.

He told Dawn that he hand-delivered the purse to the address on her licence because he hoped someone would do the same for him.

Grayson refused a reward, but Dawn sent him home with lots of vegies from her garden for his mum, an orchid for his girlfriend, and an invitation to join Neighbourhood Watch.

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill will speak at the group’s next evening forum, at Noble Park’s Paddy O’Donoghue Centre at 7.30pm on Wednesday 15 November.

Neighbourhood Watch Victoria CEO Bambi Gordan will speak at a 1.30pm meeting on the same day.

Pieces of Dandenong’s past revealed following a fire have been removed for safety.

The Journal reported that a fire at 275277 Lonsdale Street last month damaged the building’s modern facade and unearthed old signage.

Greater Dandenong city planning, design and amenity director Jody Bosman said a report from the owner’s insurers required the front facade to be demolished to the veranda, including the signs.

Councillor Maria Sampey asked the Monday 9 October Greater Dandenong Council meeting what could be done to reduce possum numbers in the area.

“The gardens really aren’t looking nice.

They’re breeding and it’s really getting overpopulated.”

“The answer is nothing. They’re a protected species,” he said.

What is something people don’t know about you?

I once had a full head of red hair!

What was your most memorable moment?

Getting a job in Dandenong back in 1986.

What would your last meal be?

A slow-cooked shoulder of lamb. The bad news is, that’s what I ate last night!

What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness?

I was going to say “witness the birth of my grandchildren” which has not yet happened but “witness” is the wrong word! Maybe seeing my wife hold our first grandchild sounds better.

Drum Theatre is in the former Dandenong Town Hall at the corner of Lonsdale and Walker streets, Dandenong. It hosts music, comedy, dance, plays and community events. The town hall facade from 1890 remains intact and LED lighting gives it a spectacular glow at night.

The Albion Hotel is Dandenong’s oldest hotel, built in the late 1800s. The grandmother of today’s owner, Deirdre Hancock, opened the Lonsdale Street landmark. The internal layout has changed but heritage status has protected the facade.

Anything written by Dick Francis. He writes thrillers with a horse racing theme to them.

My mum, my wife, my children and two others that I would discuss with them.

Club. I’d prepared an intro but not a closing remark. I froze and was completely lost for words and stuffed it.

It still haunts me more than 25 years later. I am sure there have been plenty since, but that one jumps to mind.

Prospective buyers who aren’t comfortable with the negotiation process may want to hire a buyer’s agent to represent them.

As the negotiations continue, buyers should always ensure their offer is in writing and must be accepted by a fixed date and time.

It’s also possible to make an offer that is subject to obtaining finance or the sale of an existing property.

Offers must be in writing and in the form of a contract signed by the buyer.

If the seller accepts the offer and countersigns the contract before the offer expires, there is a binding contract.

The contract sets out the terms of the sale, including the names of the buyer, seller and the estate agent, the title details, price, deposit, the balance owing and the date on which settlement will occur, at which time buyers can move into the property.

Chip off the old ice blocks Carmen Powell is a life member of the Dandenong and District Historical Society. She attended Dandenong East Primary School and Dandenong High School before getting a job at K. L. Farm Equipment in Gladstone Road. This week Carmen continues her memories of growing up in Dandenong where her Dad Alf and Uncle George ran an ice and fuel delivery business.

By 1945 my Dad Alf Cruickshank and my Uncle George Smyth owned Cruickshank and Smythe, Ice and Fuel Merchants, a business situated on the corner of Walker and McCrae streets, Dandenong.

They would begin their ice rounds at about 5am.

This was not just a summer job, people needed ice for their ice chests the whole year round so even in the dead of winter Dad would pick up Uncle George and they’d drive around the corner to the ice works in McCrae Street and load the required amount of ice for the day onto the open tray truck.

This they would cover with canvas and begin their rounds. I wonder what time they began deliveries. I imagine all the ice had to be finished before the sun became too hot.

I remember a set of large pincers they used for dragging the big blocks of ice to the back edge of the tray where they could be reached and cut. I can see the 10-inch long ice pick they cut the ice with.

The larger blocks had barely perceptible divisions in them for cutting into three or four smaller blocks. It always seemed like a miracle to me that the blocks split off so evenly into perfect rectangles.

Dad would wrap the smaller block in a hessian bag and hoist it onto his shoulder and walk at a brisk bouncy trot to the back door of a house yelling ‘ice’ loudly once or twice as he neared the back door.

Then he would simply open the door and walk in yelling once more for good measure.

Doors were never locked in those days, people trusted each other. These two men were well-liked and respected throughout the country township of Dandenong.

The ice chest was a two-door wooden cabinet with galvanized iron lining which kept food cool and away from flies, a wonderful invention after the meat safe.

The lower cabinet had two wire shelves and you stored meat, milk and butter and could even set a jelly or a junket.

The upper smaller compartment was a large box with a hinged drop down door at the front.

through a long pipe to a drip tray below.

This tray would be emptied daily - when remembered - and the overflow wiped up the next day if forgotten.

Dad would sit the new block of ice on the floor on his hessian bag and he would remove what remained of the previous block laying that on the bag also.

Then the new block of ice would be lifted up with bare hands and slid into the box with the remains packed in at the sides.

If the householder was not at home the money was left sitting on the top of the icebox.

How times have changed.

I remember the excitement of seeing Dad’s

ice truck coming down our street, probably only in the school holidays.

I was more excited than the other kids because this beautiful man with the cigarette stuck to his lip was my Dad. I thought he looked important going into so many houses.

The tray of the truck would be continually dripping onto the roadway, and the tiny freezing ice chips sprayed your face as Dad stood on the road at the back of the truck and chipped off a block.

He would jump up onto the tray and drag a large block by the pincers up to the end of the open tray and work while standing on the ground.

Local kids would come from everywhere and wait for the splinters of ice so freely given.

These precious pieces were so cold to handle that you had to toss them from one hand to the other to ease the pain in your fingers.

Your hands were hurting, your lips were frozen, your teeth aching and freezing water was dripping up your sleeves but you would never throw them away.

After much slurping to keep pace with the melting you finally bit off a small piece but had to keep rolling it around in your mouth, too cold to keep still, slurping, crunching and sucking in your breath, while still tossing the piece in your hand back and forth.

Dad would always come home for a late morning tea/ early lunch.

Eventually they had two flat tray trucks, a Rio and a Fargo and employed one or two men as well.

Election year opportunity

By Casey Neill Greater Dandenong CEO John Bennie says next year is a year of opportunity.

He was the guest speaker at the final Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards breakfast for the year at Sandhurst on Wednesday 18 October.

“There will be a state election and there’s every likelihood there’ll be a federal election in 2018,” he said.

Mr Bennie said this created an advocacy opportunity for the council.

“We do put a lot of time and effort into understanding what the broader needs are of the community.”

He urged businesses to make their needs and wants known, and said it wasn’t just about residents.

“Our advocacy list is a mile long,” he said.

He said an A-League football team for the region would inspire people, generate community pride and build new facilities.

“This could be a life-changer,” he said.

“The government needs to come to the region and support the provision of soccer sta-

dium.”

On community safety, Mr Bennie said Greater Dandenong needed more police, a family violence support and safety hub, data on packaged liquor outlet sales to assist with planning, and cash for CCTV. He said the municipality also needed more funding for material aid agencies and support to tackle unemployment.

“Unemployment in the City of Greater Dandenong is the highest in Victoria. Income is the lowest in Melbourne,” he said.

“It’s not a very nice picture to hear, but it’s

the reality of life.”

He said improved pathways into education and employment for youths would assist with intergenerational poverty, and gaming machine numbers should at least be capped, if not reduced.

There are 956 pokies in Greater Dandenong and the municipality’s losses last year were $1000 for every adult.

Mr Bennie said the $40 million Springvale Community and Learning Hub warranted Federal Government support.

Made up for media career

By Casey Neill Nicole Caccamo is making her mark on some of television’s best-known faces.

The Chisholm Institute Diploma of Screen and Media student is already landing freelance work with the likes of The Footy Show, The Block, singer Kate Ceberano and AFL Women’s League players.

The Berwick 20-year-old was announced as a Youth Enterprise Award nominee at the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards breakfast at Sandhurst on Wednesday 18 October.

Nicole hopes to forge a career as a freelance make-up artist in film, television and events and has already started her own business.

A course unit on doing just that was a huge help.

She told the breakfast that she’d be working on a Yarra Trams advertisement that weekend.

“I’ve always been a really artistic person,” she said.

“This is another creative outlet for me.

“I’ve always loved make-up.”

Nicole said she’d been offered another job on a short film but had to turn it down to focus on her studies.

“Hopefully that leads to bigger things as well,” she said.

In five years she’d like to be employing others in her small business and “doing more creative work, not just freelance clients”.

She said she gave her studies 110 per cent and was thrilled to be recognised for her efforts.

“I’d still be doing the work that I do even if I wasn’t up here,” she said.

Hearth of hope is hearty

From fireplaces to photo frames and trash - the final nominees for this year’s Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards were a mixed bag.

The Wednesday 18 October breakfast at Sandhurst heard that Haulaway’s beginnings were with Jim Hilbert in the 1930s.

Jim bought a horse and cart operation in South Melbourne and immediately added its first motorised truck.

In 1963 the business bought its first Dempster Dumpmaster truck, introducing front lift systems and mobile waste compacting to Melbourne.

Jim’s son Peter Hilbert established Haulaway in 1983 and his grandson Richard and two great-grandsons are now also involved in its day-to-day operations.

It’s based in Dandenong South and supplies the industry with compactors, bins and system auditing to reduce landfill.

Haulaway employs 62 people, has 40 trucks, services about 3000 clients and has grown

about 25 per cent year-on-year for the past five years.

Richard told the breakfast that the next step was establishing a recycling centre.

“I’d like to see in my time at Haulaway that we have zero waste to landfill,” he said.

The morning’s second nominee, Illusion Australia, manufactures gas and wood heating products in Dandenong.

Nick Miller told the breakfast that the company poured 10 per cent of its revenue into advertising and established showrooms in heavy traffic areas for self-promotion.

He said Illusion invested heavily in research and development.

“We’re developing products that won’t be available for two years,” he said.

The company employs about 150 people, including a consulting team that can meet clients in their homes.

It has grown about 17 per cent year-on-year for the past five years through expansion into Tasmania and Western Australia.

30,000 join in the party More than 30,000 people celebrated South East Asia at Dandenong Market on Sunday 8 October.

The Full Moon Festival was expected to attract about 27,000 people but the crowd reached 31,526.

The event celebrated the brightest and fullest moon, a traditional Chinese custom that symbolises peace, prosperity and family reunion.

Entertainment included lion dancing, Melbourne’s largest and longest Hong Kong-style

performing dragon, Chinese opera and more.

The festival also featured demonstrations and workshops from Melbourne’s first traditional kung fu school Jow Ga Kuen, and breakdance crew Kings Only BBoy. Sixteen food trucks bearing South East Asian street food also rolled in for the day.

The Mandarin Grocer sold mooncakes at the festival.

The sweet treats were a traditional sacrifice to thank the moon for good crops and a successful harvest.

Cardiac carers need help St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital provides a cardiac rehabilitation program for people who have had an acute heart event.

The program provides information and guidance on how to recover from a heart event and improve an individual’s quality of life.

Emma, the Cardiac Rehabilitation Coordinator, explained that there was also a need to assist carers of cardiac patients.

“We found carers were in need of some support and so the Cardiac Team collaborated with the Pastoral Care Team to design a session for carers only, so the Cardiac Carers High Tea commenced,” Emma said.

“Carers can spend the time connecting and being supported by our Pastoral Care Team while their loved one attends their program in the gym.”

The sessions aim is to create an ambient experience in a quiet room with comfortable

chairs away from the busy gym.

The carers group facilitated by a pastoral practitioner enables individuals to explore their own experience of being a carer - both the challenges and the joys.

The opportunity to meet and share with others in a similar situation provides support in knowing they are not alone in their feelings and situation.

“Our hospital places high importance on whole person care which includes patients and their families,” Emma said.

“The Cardiac Carers’ High Tea is now a permanent feature of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program and is free for carers to attend.”

Whirlwind Singh finds it Buckley Ridges (7/178) and Beaconsfield (8/115) played out a relatively one sided affair, with the Bucks getting their campaign off the perfect start.

It was fairly even team performance by the Bucks with both bat and ball, with skipper Troy Aust (45), Greg Todd (29), Susantha Pradeep (2/8), Matthew Goodwright (2/19) and Wes Nicholas (2/20) all contributing strongly.

Meanwhile, a dominant performance from Kaushyla Weeraratne and Michael Davies helped guide HSD (5/226) to a comfortable win over Parkfield (7/160).

With the bat, Weeraratne (94) and Davies (85 not out) thrilled with the crowd with their long range hitting, while Pathum De Mel (4/9) did the bulk of the damage with the ball as the Bears battled hard to keep up the run rate.

Round 2 will begin on 1 November, with Hallam Kalora Park and Mordialloc at Hallam expected to be the main draw card.

By Nick Creely DANDENONG DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION TWENTY20 CUP REVIEW - ROUND 1 Doveton North’s (3/230) Prabjhot Singh tore Fotheringham Reserve apart last Wednesday night, scoring an astonishing 151 not out in its comfortable win over Silverton (2/155).

The whirlwind knock - which included 108 runs solely in boundaries - came after Singh came in at 1/20 after four overs.

Singh’s incredible feat is the second highest score in the competition’s history, with Buckley Ridges star mind boggling Daniel Watson’s 193 not out still clearly ahead.

But nonetheless, Singh - who plays Sunday Grade for the Lions in his first season for the club - put in one of the more extraordinary efforts in DDCA Twenty20 history.

The Bakers battled hard in reply, scoring 2/155 off their 20 overs - Aaron Baldsing (57 not out) and Enayatullah Samadi (69) did their best to make a go of it.

Heavyweights Berwick (3/155) and Hallam Kalora Park (6/154) also did battle, with the Bears chasing the Hawks’ total down with one ball to spare at Arch Brown Reserve.

After a strong start with the ball by the Bears, Jordan Hammond (39) slammed on three sixes and Ryan Hillard (27 not out) provided a late cameo to help lift them to a defendable total after at one stage being in trouble after a double strike by Matt Chasemore (2/24) in the middle of the innings.

Nathan Pilon (43 off 21 balls) immediately turned the game for the Bears, with Ryan Williamson (50 not out), Chasemore (31) and Michael Wallace (16 not out) playing strong knocks to guide the home side to victory.

After a brutal knock by Eagles’ marquee player Ryan Eaton (71), West - who plays for Upper Ferntree Gully - took just 16.1 overs to get the Saints home, hitting 15 boundaries and four maximums in his stellar knock.

predictable result. Guided by an unbeaten half century to Tom Ewing (56 not out), the Westers put up a respectable score, but didn’t factor in that they would be bowling to Brett Forsyth - a man that has feasted on DDCA attacks in this competition for many years.

The Bloods’ marquee man and Dandenong champion thrilled the crowd with a whirlwind 52 off 22 balls to get the home side off to a strong start, before an impressive cameo Andrew Staude (36 off 22 balls) saw them comfortably overtake the Westers after 16.5 overs.

By Nick Creely Last Wednesday night’s Twenty20 clash between North Dandenong and Springvale at Lois Twohig Reserve wasn’t just a run-of-themill local cricket match.

It was a game with a tinge of Yellow and Black.

As part of the Maroons’ connection with the Richmond Football Club, the Premiership Cup - as held aloft by Trent Cotchin, Damien Hardwick and the other 21 players and coaches in the last Saturday of the footballing calendar of 2017, was on show for the crowd to behold and take a few selfies with.

It is the most elusive piece of silverware currently in Australian sport and for a brief period graced its presence in the Dandenong period.

As the Cup glistened in the Wednesday evening sunshine, it sure brought out the best in the Maroons in a special day for the club and its local Tiger tragics.

The Maroons belted an impressive 7/162 off their 20 overs and then bowled out Springvale for just 130, with Mitchel Minhas starring with the ball.

There was plenty of local representation in the recent Southern Football Netball League Teams of the Year, with plenty of players picked in the Division 2 and 3 sides respectively last month.

In the Division 2 side, KEYSBOROUGH managed to have three players named in the Team of the Year, with Chris Bryan, Geoff Humphreys and Tim Werner all selected after having outstanding individual seasons.

Bryan, the ex-Collingwood and Carlton ruckman, had a brilliant return season at his junior club, kicking 55 goals (second in the competition), and becoming one of the most dominant figures in the Burra’s surge at a preliminary final appearance.

Werner and Humphreys were also key lynchpins for the Burra through the midfield and forward line, with Werner, in particular, a menace to the competition with 36 majors.

Big-bodied Springvale Districts full-forward Stefan Feehan also found a spot in the team after a successful first year at the Dees, kicking 42 goals after transferring across from Dingley.

In the Division 3 side, premiers DOVETON EAGLES managed to have five players picked, with Enayte Samadi, Russell Robertson, Cory Wilson, Corrie Wilson and Travis Graeske earning selection.

Runners-up ENDEAVOUR HILLS also had plenty of representation, with star midfielder Daniel Batson, Daniel Storm and Shaun Richards all selected, while senior coach Robert Dipper was named Coach of the Year.

Batson in particular was phenomenal throughout the season, oozing class in a breakout season that saw him become one of the league’s most dominant midfielders.

Women drafted into navy

By Nick Creely Futures were made at last Wednesday’s second AFL Women’s draft with Dandenong Stingray pair Georgia Gee and Bridie Kennedy both landing at Carlton for the 2018 season.

In what was a highly successful draft for the TAC Cup club out of Shepley Oval, the youngsters will now don the navy blue after stellar seasons at both VFLW and TAC Cup Girls level.

Gee, 17, was taken at selection 12 from the Beaconsfield Junior Football Club and spent the season with the Stingrays at TAC Cup level, impressing with her composure with the footy. “(I’m) so excited, was not expecting this it’s been amazing, and I can’t wait to pull on the jumper and be a part of the Carlton Football Club next year,� Gee told Carlton Media after the draft. “It’s the best club - it’s probably the club I wanted to go to, with their culture and how they want to bring characters to their club, rather than just footballing skills.�

From a strong footballing background, Gee is certain to add some class to the Blues’ engine room in 2018. “I’ve been playing since I was born because my pa played for Hawthorn and the Richmond Football Club as well, so it’s always been in the family,� she said. “My biggest strength in football is my kicking and my decision making and, hopefully, I bring that to the club and it all goes well.�

But the thought of playing at the elite level excites her the most. “I went to the first game (last season), Collingwood and Carlton, and just had goosebumps the entire game. “It was incredible to think us girls who have been playing since we were young finally get the opportunity which is amazing,� she said.

Kennedy, 18, surprisingly slipped down to the Blues’ selection at 35, with the reigning TAC Cup Best and Fairest a real steal for the club.

Passionate local coach Dean Alburey is well on his way to living his dream as a professional coach after recently signing on with NPL powerhouse Dandenong City for the 2018 season.

The UK born 26-year-old, who has been coaching senior soccer clubs such as Pakenham United and Bunyip since arriving in Australia in July 2004, will finally get his first look at the elite young talent in the area. Alburey has been appointed the club’s Under-13 coach after City underwent some significant changes in the aftermath of a fairly strong NPL season. “I made a decision, probably midway through last season, that I wanted to make a real push into an NPL club,� he said. “Initially, it looked like it might be Bentleigh Greens, so I got in contact with them, and a couple of days later I was on LinkedIn and the technical director from Dandenong City posted they were looking for coaches as well,� he said. “They asked me to send across my football

Alburey harbors strong ambitions of the talent within the region and strongly believes that, in one of the fastest growth corridors in Australia, a professional team would do wonders for kids with ambitions to make it to the highest level.

“If I look at it from when I first got here, the growth (of soccer) has been fantastic - the talent coming through is a lot better, and the youth are really buying into it and it’s paying off,� he said. “At the top level, there is a lot of improvement left. “From what I’ve witnessed and people I’ve spoken to, the kids who do have ambitions to become professionals have a lack of an academy system.�

With the Dandenong area emerging as a possible destination for the expansion of the A-League in the near future, Alburey believes the time is right as the area continues to grow in numbers. “It’d be brilliant (getting an A-League team). “Football’s already been announced as the most participated sport in the country at club level, and it’ll keep growing. “It would make sense having an A-League side in the fastest growth corridor in the country.�

Plugged into the future

By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Mitsubishi continues its push to be at the leading edge of hybrid and electric vehicle design.

Our test vehicle for the past week has been a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicle).

The plug-in Outlander PHEV for 2018 is almost futuristic thanks to a huge new front end and a mild tail tuck.

Inside, the latest Outlander PHEV has a redesigned steering wheel, revised design of accents in the trim and reshaped seats. Materials have a more upmarket feel and look.

The biggest news in the latest Outlander is that a DC fast-charge system can recharge the battery to 80 per cent capacity in around 25 minutes.

Major changes to the drivetrain make Outlander significantly more efficient.

Official fuel consumption is down by about 10 per cent, from 1.9 to 1.7 litres per 100 kilometres.

The new Outlander has an EV Priority mode that drivers use it purely as an electric vehicle provided there is sufficient charge in the batteries.

As a last resort if you’re making long trips Mitsubishi Outlander can run on petrol for 500 to 600 km if you drive sensibly.

Outlander is offered in LS and Exceed grades. Both have smartphone Link Display audio with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto2 integration; and DAB+ radio. You need to use your own smartphone for satellite navigation.

Petrol consumption during our test period ranged from zero in the Brisbane city area where we ran it as a pure EV, to seven to eight litres per 100 kilometres on petrol once the battery was discharged. EV range was usually in the 35 to 45 kilometre range, so if you’re only doing short trips and can charge the Outlander overnight you can go for weeks, even months, without calling into a service station.

Ride quality and comfort have been improved, primarily thanks to changes to the platform to increase structural rigidity.

There’s also extra sound deadening mate-

rial and revisions to the suspension to reduce noise.

Comfort is good, with a very quiet interior on smooth roads. Rough surfaces noticeably increased sound levels, so the Outlander isn’t quite in the luxury sedan class.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV holds on well in bends, partly because of its lowish centre of gravity due to underfloor batteries. It’s no sports SUV like some of the Europeans in this class, though.

As our city continues to grow, demand for parking will increase. As part of the City of Casey’s journey towards becoming a smart city, we’re installing new technology that will make finding a car park quicker and easier.

Throughout the month we will be installing Smart Parking technology within the library, Casey Arc and Bunjil Place basement car parks.

Smart Parking provides real time information on parking through a cloud based service, collected by tech sensors located in the ground. The sensors send data to smart phone apps and traffic signs to help guide you to an available parking space.

Additional benefits of the technology include the ability to manage parking demand, to ensure fair access to short-stay parking spaces is prioritised closer to businesses and facilities, to reduce traffic congestion caused by cars circling for a park, and the ability to integrate additional car parks into the system in the future.

Two traffic signs will be installed on Patrick Northeast Drive to show the parking availability within the three Bunjil Place precinct car parks. One sign will face vehicles entering from Magid Drive and the other for vehicles entering from Overland Drive.

Council is moving…

From Monday 30 October the new home for Council’s Customer Service Centre will be located at Bunjil Place and will provide an improved customer experience for residents and visitors. With a self-assist kiosk and concierge on hand, you will spend less time queuing and more time exploring the precinct.

Business as usual will occur from the existing Civic Centre up until 6.00 pm on Friday 27 October. This will also be the final day of operations at Council’s Percy Trewin Annexe, Regency Drive and Verdun Drive offices with these services being relocated and accessible at Bunjil Place from Monday 30 October.

Council Meetings will be held in the new Bunjil Place Function Centre the first one taking place on Thursday 9 November.
