Heavy metal wins hearts and minds Car enthusiasts were in their element at the weekend’s Car Megamart annual family fun day. An estimated 1300 classic cars were on display at the Pakenham car yard, attracting a crowd of about 5000. Car Megamart spokesperson Karlie

Thexton said the 15 October festivities, which along with the classic car display included food vans, jumping castles, children’s entertainment and live music, were a great success. “We had a really great day, the sun was

very kind to us,” Ms Thexton said. She said the event, which this year partly supported the Young Veterans and Pakenham Rotary, would now become a permanent fixture on the car yard’s calendar.

Super playground Pakenham’s bumper all-abilities playground is one step closer to fruition. Works will soon begin on Cardinia Shire’s largest playground, spruiked as a tourist destination for children with and without disabilities, after council on 16 October awarded the project’s tender. The $1.9 million playspace, to rest within the under construction Deep Creek Reserve, will be built by Victorian company Red Centre Nominees after the company presented the most “beneficial” tender to the council.

The playspace, which will form the centrepiece of the 42-hectare reserve, will include water and sand play, swings and mounds, a slalom course, sensory garden trails and an immersive maze. A building next to the playground will be a Changing Places facility - a specialist area for those with high needs and their carers to relax in a comfortable and modest place. It will be funded through contributions from the State Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund and council’s capital works program.

Councillor Jodie Owen said the playspace would be one of the biggest and best of its kind in Victoria. “Families will be able to plan functions and fun further out (of Melbourne),” Cr Owen said. “I think Cardinia Shire is really up there with this one.” Mayor Brett Owen said the playspace would attract plenty of use from locals and visitors alike. “This will be a tourist destination, particularly for those coming from Gippsland,” the mayor said. The council expects Deep Creek

ground and other facilities for people with special needs and a great redevelopment of a space that hasn’t been properly utilised”. “It’s a great outcome for the (neighbouring) golf club, and a great outcome for the environment and those who advocated so strongly for it,” Mr Andrews said during a recent site visit. “And to think those people who have disabilities will be able to access to those playground facilities, that’s a terrific outcome." The playground is expected to be open in early 2019.

Along with the playground, the site - which backs on to the Pakenham Golf Club - will house an ecological centre, indigenous nursery, lookout points, barbecue areas and wetlands. The mayor said works were progressing well. “This is the second contract (we’ve awarded) in two months for Deep Creek ... this project is up and going,” he said. Mick leaves a solid foundation By Garry Howe Long-serving City of Casey councillor Mick Morland was a great supporter of the Casey Cardinia Foundation and a regular fixture at its Annual Charity Dinner, particularly since Casey became involved a few years back. Mick wasn’t at the Cardinia Cultural Centre for the Foundation’s 14th dinner on Friday night, 13 October, having passed away after being hit by a car while walking not far from his Berwick home last June. But his presence was still certainly felt. After the accident his wife Kay asked that donations be made to the Foundation in lieu of flowers and that money - together with a significant contribution from the City of Casey was presented by the Foundation in his honour. The inaugural Mick Morland Memorial Grant went to the Casey Basketball Association for the establishment of a wheelchair basketball program at Casey Stadium. His daughter Rebecca Sanders and niece Lisa O’Keefe made the announcement on the family’s behalf on Friday night. They said Mick - a keen sportsman and fanatical Richmond supporter would have been thrilled to think that the money went towards providing greater sports opportunities for people with a disability. In a nice touch, Lisa later bought a Richmond jumper signed by the 2017 premiership team at auction. Around 300 people enjoyed fine lo-

Paky jobs bonanza is set By Bonny Burrows In a boost to local employment, job hunters can now apply for one of 110 new positions at Pakenham East’s train depot. Construction of the 118-hectare state-of-the-art facility, with shedding the size of 67 Olympic swimming pools, is underway and once complete will be used to maintain the State Government’s new fleet of high-capacity metro trains (HCMTs). Announced in April, the $280 million depot, spruiked as “the biggest train project in Victoria’s history”, will feature maintenance facilities, a driver training centre, a train simulator and stabling for up to 30 trains. In a commitment to local employment, the State Government has promised at least 60 per cent of the project’s 400-strong workforce will be made up of locals. Already, 250 people are working onsite on Oakview Lane, and on 16 October Member for Eastern Victoria Daniel Mulino announced a further 110 workers will soon join them. Mr Mulino said the new positions would involve testing and maintaining the 65 new HCMTs.

Workers in the automotive industry are encouraged to apply for the positions, as according to the government the project provides the perfect opportunity to use skills learnt in the vehicle industry to transition to a career in rolling stock. “I encourage local tradies, engineers and construction professionals to apply and play a part in the biggest train project in Victoria’s history,” Mr Mulino said. “We’re backing Victoria’s rolling stock industry and creating local jobs in Melbourne’s outer SouthEast.” He also urged school leavers and other young locals to apply for one of 30 pre-apprenticeship positions, which are designed to potentially lead to apprenticeships on the HCMT project. The Certificate II in Engineering Studies will be provided through Chisholm TAFE, which will hold information sessions in November 2017 ahead of a February 2018 course start. Job seekers can also directly apply through Downer Careers at downercareers.com. For more information on the preapprenticeship program and how to apply for a scholarship, visit chisholm.edu.au/downerpa.

Town to go multi-cultural with a fistful of state cash The Pakenham community will be able to celebrate its diverse cultures thanks to State Government funding. Two Pakenham organisations are among recipients of 897 grants announced on 16 October through the government’s Multicultural Festivals and Events Programs. According to the government, the grants were approved for events that foster crosscultural awareness, understanding and respect, and ensure that Victoria’s multicultural communities can celebrate, preserve and share traditions in meaningful ways. Living Learning Pakenham will receive $3500 towards their music, dance and food event “Celebrating Multiculturalism” at the Pakenham Show on 17 March. Pakenham Springs Primary School was also announced as a recipient, and has been granted $800 towards a March 2018 event showcasing the performing arts of Japan. Member for Eastern Victoria Region Daniel Mulino welcomed the funding. “Events and festivals are more than just fun activities and shows. They give us the opportunity to come together and be as one as a community,” Mr Mulino said. “I’m delighted Cardinia will continue to get a chance to do just that.” More than 1000 applications were submitted from both new and established community groups, spanning metropolitan and regional Victoria. All applications were assessed on merit by an independent panel, with the Victorian Multicultural Commission playing a key role.

Living Learning Pakenham is among the recipients of grants to promote multiculturalism. Pictured is Mihae Kang from the Republic of Korea playing a gayagum at an event earlier in the year.

PARC opens up to public By Cam Lucadou-Wells Years after its controversial inception, Narre Warren North’s adult PARC (Prevention and Recovery Care) and extended PARC facilities recently opened their doors to the public. The “step up” and “step down” mental health facilities aim to feel less like a hospital and more like a home, says Mind Australia’s regional service manager Michael Harrison. “People, who are at first anxious about coming here, say: ‘Wow, this is a beautiful place’.” It’s a holistic model made up of psychiatrists, a doctor, nurses and occupational therapists and Mind staff who run art, music, budgeting and cooking sessions. People take turns to cook and to do chores, and take part in a plethora of group activities to build a sense of community. The aim is to reduce people presenting to hospitals, but instead empowering them to lead purposeful, happier lives in the community, Mr Harrison says. “Often the problem for people with mental health issues is they isolate themselves more and more. “If they engage with these activities, they can - for example - join an art group when they go back home.” People “own” their recoveries. They are put on the path of employment, and learn techniques to manage their mental health. So “life doesn’t fall apart,” Mr Harrison says. “The good thing about the PARCs is they give you time to sit down, identify goals and work on your situation.” The open day was in part to help destigmatise the facilities, he said. Several years ago, there had been community fears for the mental health services’ security. Nearby residents told Star News in 2011 they feared for their safety. But things have changed in mental health. People are talking about it more and positive initiatives are taking place. Of the 228 people admitted to the facility in 2016, the vast majority responded “very positive-

ly”, he said. They felt supported, more confident and more equipped to return home. It is less traumatic than presenting at hospital, surrounded by acutely unwell people who have to be controlled. “Here, it’s friendly, warm and home-like,” Mr Harrison says. As part of the step-up, step-down model, the PARCs admit people who are becoming unwell as a “step up” from their residential home. They also support people in the early stages of recovery from acute illness, taking a “step down” as they’re discharged from hospital. The extended PARC - the only one in Victoria - allows for longer stays of up to six months. The facilities are run in partnership by Monash Health and Mind Australia.

Just the thought of driving his artfully-painted car makes Berwick artist Sohail Yamin nervous. He refuses to drive the 'SalamMobile’ - it is much easier to drive standard cars than his paintings, he says. The car is not just a visual treat but a whirl of stories and motifs created by a team of volunteer artists including Yamin over about 1000 hours. Influenced by the vibrant traditions of Pakistani truck art, Yamin says the car showcases the positive aspects of immigration. It particularly tells of the Australian Muslim immigration story, including Indonesian makassar boats and South Asian cameleers. “I feel not knowing someone else or the fear from not knowing someone else creates all the current misunderstanding. “If people find out what it’s all about, we end up in a better place.” The car is also known as ‘Rumi’, after the famous poet and mystic who also rose during a similar time of “social and political turmoil”. “Just as he tried to create an atmosphere of dialogue and tolerance through his writing and poetry, the intention of the imagery is to initiate a conversation. “I personally believe that some of the anarchy in today’s world can be eliminated if we learn to understand and appreciate the differences among us.” It hurts Yamin to hear negative talk against immigrants as a general group - whether it’s on the street or in the media. He instead points to the culture and heritage that immigrants bring, that makes our lives more colourful. Yamin is a mechanical engineer-

In reply to Jane Foreman, (12 October) concerning same-sex marriage. Jane, I completely agree with you, the law should not be changed. I have a sign on my letterbox which has been removed or vandalised 12 times. All it says is "It’s OK to vote no’’. It is not telling anyone how to vote. Every time someone removes or defaces that sign they are saying to voters, you are NOT free to decide for yourselves. SSM activists do not want a democracy, and that’s why l am voting no. Let me also add that I am a gay man myself living in a same-sex relationship, so my opinion frankly counts more than the vague gesture demanded by those who will never be in a same-sex relationship. I posted these details on my Facebook page - I’ve had over 700 thumbs up from non-gay people, but to my surprise, it was a number of very unpleasant gay people who attacked me and called me the bigot. To voters, do not think all gay people are like the violent SSM protesters. And it is OK to vote no. Patrick (last name supplied), Narre Warren.

The member for Narre Warren North, and Minister for Roads, Luke Donnellan, was at the Endeavour Hills Shopping Centre today, October 14. I thought this was an opportunity to ask the minister for a reply to some of the written and verbal questions I presented to him at the meeting he held almost four weeks ago inside the Narre Warren Bowls Club. I asked the minister why he hadn’t replied to my questions: Where does he stand on the issue of drug injecting rooms and will the Andrews Government be legalising drug injecting rooms anywhere in Victoria? Mr Donnellan replied: “I am replying now. There are no plans to legalise them for the moment." I then asked why hadn’t the Andrews Government investigated the alternatives to drug injecting rooms? Scandinavian countries and cities like San Francisco can offer alternatives programs to drug injecting rooms. Why haven’t they been investigated? Luke Donnellan simply said: “Drug injecting rooms are not being looked at - at the moment." I then asked why is the Andrews Government and the Minister for Transport, Jacinta Allan, implementing a policy of deregulation,

·

most recently in the taxi industry, when deregulation policy has manifestly failed. The London mayor and the London Transport Committee recently refused to renew Uber’s licence to operate, stating Uber is a risk to public safety and security. Failed deregulation policy was also behind the Grenville Towering Inferno in London.

The Minister for Roads and member for Narre Warren showed little interest in offering an audible reply. I said to him that I believed Jacinta Allan and the Andrews Government had imposed a policy on the Victorian community for which there was no basis in evidence. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.

Socially speaking On 11 October the Berwick Cranbourne News Facebook Page shared the story of the latest crime statistics data which showed crime in the City of Casey had increased 3.3 per cent with public nuisance offences rising to 43.8 per cent, up from 73 offences to 105. Police say they are working hard to keep the community safe. Southern Metro Region Commander, Acting Superintendent Tom Nairn said police were pouring in efforts to reduce residential burglaries, adding that the rise in assaults was primarily as a result of an increase in the reporting of family violence incidents. The story generated some strong opinions among readers. Here is how they reacted online.

Juille Holland: Cranbourne is such a ****hole now. Would never ever go back and live there. Adam 'Bugsy’: Well it’s not called Crimeburne for no reason. Sue Baldizoni: Casey is awash with ice, these are the consequences. Toni Semerak: I thought the crime rate was down. People must be confused. Sammy Brown: Give us some news that’s going to fix this! Ffs, it’s practically a 50 per cent rise - so frustrating Megan Murdoch: That looks worse compared to the first photo I saw. Julie Gifford: Doesn’t surprise me. Lawrence Chadwick: You’re terrible.

Telstra dragging its feet By Cam Lucadou-Wells It seems like it takes more than one phone call to get simple repair work from Telstra. Michael Phelps, of Berwick, had been trying for at least 10 months for the telecommunications giant to fix a slipshod piece of work on the footpath in front of his house. Telstra installed a pit that was not levelled off with cement. It was instead backfilled with crumbling bitumen as well as dirt that washed away. What was left was a raised edge of concrete - and a tripping hazard for several elderly residents in Hazeldene Court. “It’s a sign of declining standards and regard for public safety,” Mr Phelps said. “The workmanship was just terrible.” An exasperated Mr Phelps rang Star News after what he says was months of haggling and handballing

from Telstra. For several months, Telstra argued the pit was NBN’s responsibility - though the pit cover carried the Telstra logo. Most recently, Telstra fixed a temporary yellow cover over the footpath and pledged to have the hazard fixed by September. “They promised me it would be done because they wanted to take the complaint off the system,” Mr Phelps said. “Now this (yellow pit cover) seems like their final solution.” After an inquiry by Star News, a Telstra spokesperson said on 18 October that it would aim to complete the repairs by “the end of next week”. “We apologise for the time it has taken to complete the remedial works around the pit lid.” When told of Telstra’s response, Mr Phelps said: “Isn’t that amazing? “Thank you, that’s a good result.”

Students at her Narre Warren South school would no longer have to commute as far as Warragul to rehearse in a theatre, Ms Hartney said. “People (in the arts) were just having to travel everywhere, which is crazy given Casey is one of the biggest growth-corridors. “To be able to share this space with professionals will be an amazing experience for our dancers.” Bunjil Place looks over the Scout hall on Magid Drive where the dance school first op-

There’s a feeling that it’s their concert place.”

Lind-Elle School of Dance’s recreational and elite performance dancers start rehearsals at Bunjil Place the week after it opens. They perform three shows of jazz, tap, ballet, hip hop and other dance styles at the venue on 19 November. Bookings: www.bunjilplace. com.au/lind-elle-school-ofdance

Nossal High students have lifted a statewide schools award from the scrapheap, so to speak. A student group Nossal Environmental Sustainability Team (NEST) led by Jessica Ball drove a state-leading waste recycling program from scratch in just 18 months. On 16 October, they took out the School of the Year in the ResourceSmart Schools awards - topping a competitive field of 1000 schools. Part of their program included a recycling wall for traditionally non-recycled items like school staples such as pens, pencils, markers and batteries. It also collected mobile phones, toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, coffee capsules and crushable plastics for recycling company TerraCycles. In the meantime, the team created biodiversity tanks for native lizards, snakes and a frog, and planted hundreds of native trees. In the past two years, the team earned stars for three ResourceSmart modules - core sustainability, waste and biodiversity. Ms Ball, who was a finalist in the Teacher of the Year category, said students were enthusiastic and full of ideas. “Once you’ve got them on board, you can do anything.”

Was it blackmail? By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Doveton man, twice jailed for family violence, has been granted bail on appeal after claiming he was being blackmailed by the same victim. On 9 October, Justice Jane Dixon of the Supreme Court of Victoria released the 29-year-old man on strict bail conditions including a fixed address, night curfew and daily reporting to police. He was also ordered to comply with family violence intervention orders and not communicate with the ex-partner and her son. The decision overturned the man’s failed bail application in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 18 September. The man denied stalking, unlawful assault and persistently breaching an intervention order in Springvale in May - three days after being released from his second stint at prison. He had been on two community corrections orders at the time.

Defence barrister Roona Nida claimed the man had been jailed twice due to “false” allegations made by the ex-partner, who had been blackmailing him for money. On one occasion, the ex-partner alleged the man breached his intervention order by making about 130 phone calls to her on 23 April - while she had possession of his phone, Ms Nida said. In February, she allegedly threatened to make “trouble” if he didn’t transfer his $36,000 car into her name. He is still paying off the car loan, insurance and maintenance, Ms Nida said. “The applicant was unemployed and was forced to transfer ... unemployment benefits to (the ex-partner) in order to avoid going to prison.” He also alleged he had been beaten up - once by four men outside his house and once by a man who drove off with the ex-partner. The man had also been allegedly

assaulted by the female in November, leading to the police taking out an intervention order on his behalf. Two days later, the female took out an intervention order against the man. His first set of charges and a 17day jail term followed. Ms Nida said two psychologists’ reports found the man had no intention of harming or taking revenge on the ex-partner or her boyfriend. “The applicant expressed that he was fully committed to move on with his life and work hard to make money. “He also expressed his religious reasons for (ceasing to think) about (the ex-partner) being re-partnered with another man.” Ms Nida said the man had no criminal history prior to the family violence allegations in November. Already on remand for more than four months, the man had attempted suicide and was at risk of mental deterioration if he spent a lengthy time

in prison, Ms Nida said. Police had alleged the man had approached the woman outside her house in breach of an intervention order, followed her in his car and harassed her as she walked to Springvale railway station. As she sat in a male friend’s car in a car park, the accused allegedly tried to open the locked car doors and then struck on the car windows with his hands. The victim took photos of him next to the car - with confirmation of the geographic location. The accused told police the victim’s friend had got out of the car at a McDonald’s outlet and punched the accused several times to the head. “They’re making up stories to get me,” he allegedly told police. That night, he allegedly returned to the victim’s home. The man was bailed to appear at a contested hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 18 October.

The new Narre: at $2m plus By Cam Lucadou-Wells How’s this for a sign of the times? A seven-bedroom mansion has broken the $2-million barrier for what is believed to be the first time in Narre Warren North. The 31 Rose Garden Court property, marketed with a slick video orchestrated by real estate agent Zed Nasheet, recently sold for $2.3 million. That type of money buys you lots of space. There’s an outdoor pool, a Hollywood-themed theatre room with a bar, two covered balconies and a multi-purpose rumpus room - and pretty much everything you can imagine. Mr Nasheet is starting to be known for his savvy marketing campaign of high-end real estate pitched at local and international buyers. “It’s about the location (in this case) and the way you market it,” he says. “It’s the best house that’s come on the market here.” The sassy video for this property shines with actors and a show-stealing child as well as a Lamborghini, a Porsche and a Ferrari. He recently sold a property in Glen Iris after hosting an auction feted by Brazilian dancers, an Essendon football player and a contestant from The Bachelor. With an ambitious eye, Mr Nasheet has now branched off into his own A-listing real estate company. The sky doesn’t seem to be his limit.

Council mulls solar farm plan By Cam Lucadou-Wells A locally based solar farm could deliver affordable energy to residents and revenue to Casey Council, says councillor Amanda Stapledon. At a council meeting on 17 October, Cr Stapledon tabled for Casey to investigate a “win-win” public-private partnership with US-based NOVOsol Power Company. She said unutilised land such as landfill or powerline reserves might be used for solar panel installation. “I believe that we are not in any capacity, at this point in time, able to move to renewables. “But I think there are opportunities ... (to) give our residents greater opportunity to purchase affordable power to either provide or top up their current usage. “This is especially important given the power crisis that we are already experiencing and that Adelaide has been crippled with.” Cr Stapledon said advances in renewable power were in their infancy, but pointed to promising examples like Australia’s first local-government solar farm on the Sunshine Coast and mass-battery storage of solar polar in South Australia. NOVOsol had worked in several countries with different levels of government and partnering major banks, insurance, energy and engineering firms, she said. “The company is predominantly working with Indigenous communities who receive benefits from providing the land. “Then the company and government body provide energy back to the grid, and in many instances generate a revenue stream for themselves.” Casey officers and councillors are expected to meet with Josue Altomonte of NOVOsol as part of the investigation. The officers are expected to table a report at the council by April 2018.

Hit 190 in a 70 zone A 21-year-old man has allegedly been clocked at nearly three times the speed limit on Princes Highway, Berwick. The Dandenong North man in a white Volkswagen Golf was detected at 190 km/h in a 70 km/h zone just after 4am on 15 October. Casey Highway Patrol officers monitored and intercepted the car in Guys Hill. The car was immediately impounded for 30 days, costing the man $1060. He was expected to be charged on summons with speed and manner dangerous, conduct endangering life, evading police and other offences.

Child marriage damned By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Grandmothers Against Detention of Refugee Children rallied outside La Trobe MP Jason Wood's office. 173922 Picture: BONNY BURROWS

Grannies say they will overcome By Bonny Burrows Local grandmothers have continued their fight against Australian asylum seeker policies, this time taking to the streets of Berwick. Following on from the group’s 8 October’s Emerald protest where members demanded the Australian Government stop refugee and asylum seeker suffering on Manus Island and Nauru and “bring them here”, Grandmothers Against Detention of Refugee Children rallied outside La Trobe MP Jason Wood’s office on Thursday 12 October in a call for his support. When they found that Mr Wood was

not at his office, the group of about 15 took the opportunity to march through Berwick’s CBD, singing We Shall Overcome and reciting poems by refugees. Member Virginia Schneiders said the community responded positively. “We had good reactions, toots from passers-by, waves, people were generally pretty supportive,” Ms Schneiders said. Ms Schneiders met with Mr Wood the following day to discuss the treatment of refugee and asylum seekers on Manus Island and Nauru. She said that while there was “some rapport built up”, the local MP stopped

short of voicing his support for mainland settlement, something government policy current prohibits. “He did say the government was working on resettlement but there was nothing I would call definitive about what he was saying,” Ms Schneiders said. “He really needs to take a note of this issue. It’s a very small margin in his seat and this is something that has a lot of support locally.” Jason Wood was contacted by the Gazette for comment on 12 October, but as of 17 October had not responded.

A guest speaker at City of Casey’s victims-of-crime forum has lashed out at a failure to strongly punish perpetrators of child marriage. Betul Tuna, a policy officer at Ethnic Council of Shepparton, asked gatherers on 8 October why perpetrators were regarded as different to paedophiles. She later told Star News that the ‘husbands’ were charged with marrying an underage bride, but why not with child sexual abuse? “The perpetrators try to justify this with something else like cultural or religious practices. “What is happening is that girls are given to someone a lot older than them, and we’re referring to the paedophile as a ‘husband’. “Isn’t it paedophilia? What is the difference?” Ms Tuna says the double standard is shown by the crime of a man “shopping” for a child online. That man’s intentions or cultural practices are not then elevated above children’s rights. The parents of the bride, if they’re knowing participants, should also be held culpable, Ms Tuna says. The offences are written down as cultural practices performed in the

offenders’ country-of-origin. They are downplayed because they are not “white” or “mainstream” - at least not these days, Ms Tuna says. “Child marriage was not far away from Australian culture 100 years ago, 50 years ago or even 20 years ago,” she says. In September, a 35-year-old man was convicted and jailed by the Victorian County Court for 12 months for marrying a 14-year-old girl in Noble Park. He was the first to be sentenced in Australia under the federal offence of marrying a person under 16. The imam Ibrahim Omerdic, 62, who was charged with conducting the marriage, is appealing his conviction. Though there are no statistics, the issue is common in Australia and the world, Ms Tuna says. It’s a risk not just for migrants but for children born in Australia. It’s a problem not just in some regions of the world but it’s a global problem, Ms Tuna argues. Ms Tuna works in Shepparton to prevent female genital mutilation and to support affected women. Child trafficking, child abuse and female genital mutilation are issues that affect “all of us”.

Byrne in right headspace Holt MP Anthony Byrne joined a celebration of headspace services in Narre Warren recently. The event marked headspace Day - a national day that aims to get people caring for their mental health issues early before they got more serious. Narre Warren’s headspace centre is one of the most popular services for youth mental health support. It has assisted more than 1200 young people in Casey in 2017 - nearly twice the national

average for headspace centres. One of its drawcards is Romeo the therapy dog, who was a calming influence on the centre’s visitors. “It was great to meet the staff and to thank them for making a real difference to the lives of Casey’s youth,” Mr Byrne said. “Casey’s youth should be reminded that we do have a wonderful local mental health headspace service that is easily accessible ... if they ever need

any mental health support.” He pledged his support for continued funding to ensure it remained a “world-class local mental health facility for the long term”. A quarter of young Australians experience mental health issues each year. Headspace is building an advice campaign based on young people’s feedback, which aims to help other young people.

Security bollards are set to be installed at roads leading to Bunjil Place. 172365

Bollards for Bunjil Place By Cam Lucadou-Wells Surrounding roads will be closed while security bollards are installed around Casey Council’s new civic-arts headquarters in Narre Warren. Magid Drive will be closed during the night works at Bunjil Place on Sunday 22 October and Monday 23 October. The works include road resurfacing and security bollards

in the centre median. Patrick Northeast Drive will also be closed for one night for resurfacing and the installation of raised pedestrian crossings and security bollards. Part of the drive will remain closed until Monday, 30 October. Casey mayor Sam Aziz said the “critical renewal works” were needed to create “pedes-

trian friendly spaces” in the precinct. “With Bunjil Place opening in just two weeks’ time we need to make sure everyone can travel safely to and from the new entertainment precinct, and these works will assist in that. “The works have been scheduled to occur overnight to minimise disruption to the community.”

Come on, get out to a park By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Council is set to investigate ways to activate the “passive” reserve Ackland Park in Narre Warren North. Councillor Rosalie Crestani told a 17 October Council meeting that residents had suggested barbecues, seating and exercise equipment to make better use of the open-space parkland. With more families moving into the area,

“we want as many people to engage in that space, and to develop it a bit more,” she said. However, there were also residents who preferred the park to be left as is, Cr Crestani said. The council will also look into ways of deterring drivers of petrol remote-control cars that had taken over the park’s BMX track. Michael Allday of the Narre Warren North Community Association said warning signs had

failed to ward off the remote-control drivers, leaving kids with their bikes watching on the side of the track. There were dedicated remote-control tracks in the region, including Knox Council, he said. New residents also wanted the jumps removed from the track, now that many of the original BMXers were now probably driving cars, Mr Allday said.

The park had been long regarded as a “passive park”, in keeping with the sparse available parking, he said. There was also a need for better drainage at the reserve. “It’s a very wet park, and the council even has problems mowing it in winter-time. We’d certainly like to try to get a better usage of it - and try to deter other people using it for remote-control cars.”

Man is critical

Hear ye, hear ye!

A man has been found with life-threatening injuries near a shopping centre in Berwick. Passersby found the man with serious head injuries lying on the road in Beldale Court just after 10pm on 15 October. Paramedics stabilised the man’s condition. He was taken by road ambulance to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition. The man was believed to be aged in his twenties and to be of Indian sub-continental appearance, police say. He was wearing a burgundy, blue and white shirt with burgundy tracksuit pants and without shoes. Police have yet to identify the man, and have appealed for witnesses. Town crier Robert Wingrave, pictured with councillor Wayne Smith, was called into action for the City of Casey’s final council meeting at its old offices on 18 October. Cr Smith regaled with tales of the building’s 40-year history - such an irate councillor being locked in a lift during a crucial vote and an embarrassed person who mistook a cupboard for a room’s exit. The City of Berwick offices first serviced a population of 30,000, now they were serving Casey’s 314,000 residents, chief executive Mike Tyler told the meeting. The councillors and administration are set to move to the nearby Bunjil Place on 30 October.

PROPERTY NEWS

MAGICAL CELEBRATION FOR NEW DISPLAY VILLAGE ARCADIA estate in Officer will transform into a storybook wonderland in preparation for a community celebration and launch of a new 35-home display village. The free family day on Saturday 21 October will combine entertainment, food, music and some creatures most Melburnians won’t be used to coming across in their city’s south-eastern suburbs. Satterley Property Group general manager for Victoria and Queensland Jack Hoffmann said the storybook theme is a nod to the book names that feature throughout Arcadia’s streets, plus the four schools within the estate. “Creating vibrant communities is at the heart of all our projects and the launch of the display village is a great opportunity to celebrate with local residents and those families that already call Arcadia home,” Mr Hoffmann said. “Not many developments boast more than one school, let alone four and, with this in mind, we decided a theme exploring the magic of books and the fun that comes from reading made a lot of sense for this event.” Hoffmann said the 35-home display village has something for everybody adults and kids alike. The event promises ‘real adventure’ with a giant gorilla, a flock of flamingos in a sea of floating bubbles, as well as a magical unicorn guarding chocolate coins, all close to a giant jungle tent. “It’s going to be a lot of fun and as you explore you never know what you might find around the next corner,” Mr Hoffmann promised. Arcadia’s new display village features

"Grandfather Reg". residences constructed by some of Australia’s most trusted homebuilders from Homebuyers Centre and Boutique Homes to Metricon and Porter Davis - and there are floorplans, designs and interior finishes to suit every taste and budget. Everyone is welcome, from local

Cardiac carers St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital provides a cardiac rehabilitation program for people who have had an acute heart event. The program provides information and guidance on how to recover from a heart event and improve an individual’s quality of life. Emma, the Cardiac Rehabilitation Coordinator, explained that there was also a need to assist carers of cardiac patients. “We found carers were in need of some support and so the Cardiac Team collaborated with the Pastoral Care Team to design a session for carers only, so the Cardiac Carers

High Tea commenced,” Emma said. “Carers can spend the time connecting and being supported by our Pastoral Care Team while their loved one attends their program in the gym.” The sessions aim is to create an ambient experience in a quiet room with comfortable chairs away from the busy gym. The carers group facilitated by a pastoral practitioner enables individuals to explore their own experience of being a carer - both the challenges and the joys. The opportunity to meet and share

with others in a similar situation provides support in knowing they are not alone in their feelings and situation. “Our hospital places high importance on whole person care which includes patients and their families,” Emma said. “The Cardiac Carers’ High Tea is now a permanent feature of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program and is free for carers to attend.” St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital is at 255-265 Cranbourne Road in Frankston. FIRE ACTION WEEK

Connecting people and communities PN

13 - 20 October 2017

Message from the Premier [Next/This*] /This*] week weekisisweek is Fire Action Week, a time for all Victorians to begin preparing for the summer ahead. It’s particularly important this year, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting a long and hot summer. Thankfully, our dedicated emergency services are working together with communities, businesses, local councils and residents to reduce the risk for our state.

Stay informed

So please, talk to your family, friends and neighbours about your plans, and make sure you know when to leave and where to go to stay safe. You can also ind out more information, monitor warnings and check the daily Fire Danger Ratings at emergency.vic.gov.au. Planning and preparing for ire is everyone’s responsibility. Taking the right steps now could make all the difference.

At the same time, it’s important that each of us understands our own ire risks. And remember, you don’t need to live in regional Victoria to be in danger. Fires can occur anywhere.

The Hon Daniel Andrews MP Premier of Victoria

FIRE ACTION WEEK THE RIGHT TIME TO PREPARE It’s your responsibility to be ready this summer. Prepare your property, fire plan and emergency kit now. The reasons are black and white.

1. Plan what you’ll do in the event of a fire, talk to your household and know where to access information on high risk days. 2. Keep grass short. Fire can ignite and travel quickly through long grass. 3. Get rid of dry grass, leaves, twigs and loose bark around your home. 4. Remove or prune shrubs near windows and under branches of mature trees. 5. Cut back overhanging tree branches close to property – no branches within 10 metres. 6. Keep gutters and roof areas clear of leaf litter (if you are physically able to). 7. Remove all materials from around the home that could burn, such as boxes, furniture and woodpiles.

Poolside Beaconsfield will be joining forces with the Beaconsfield Community Bank to hold its annual open and sale day on Saturday 28 October. Having taken over the business 12 months ago, director and owner of Poolside Beaconsfield Grant Forbes said that this year the celebrations would take on a more community feel and encouraged local residents to become involved in supporting their town. “The store has held an open day for at least four or five years,” Grant said. “The open day is, arguably, one of the biggest, if not the biggest in the state of Victoria - it is huge. “In the industry, it’s renowned, everyone knows about it. But in the past it’s been all about us. “I wanted the open day this year to be more of a community event. So I approached the Bendigo Bank as they’re big on the community aspect and they’ve agreed to come on board. “There will be a barbecue out the front and 100 per cent of the gold coin donations from that will go to the OTIS Foundation to support families dealing with breast cancer.” The day will also feature local barista Ben from C-U-Latte as well as kids’ entertainment in the form of jumping castles and fairy floss. For those in the market for pool supplies, there will be up to 30 per cent off products store-wide as well as a display of Sapphire Spas. But as Grant explained, the new open day is driven by his strong belief in locals supporting locals and their communities. For Grant, this is done through sponsoring local organizations such as the Beaconsfield Football and Beaconsfield Cricket clubs. “It’s important for communities to support their own because for a small business to endure

Have it checked Due to Australia’s harsh climate, Sun Patrol recommends adults have a skin cancer check annually. An accredited skin cancer doctor and aesthetic medical practitioner, Dr. Michael Safaie explained that Sun Patrol’s qualified doctors conduct thorough checks of the entire skin surface to detect signs of cancer. “Frighteningly, two out of three Australians will develop skin cancer,” Dr. Safaie said. “The professional Sun Patrol team specialise in dermoscopy (looking at skin under magnification) and dermal imaging. “When a problem is detected, 90 per cent of cases can be treated under local anaesthetic at Sun Patrol or by prescription anti-cancer creams.

WE HAVE MOVED DENTURES

DIRECT TO PUBLIC No Referral Needed

“More complex cases may need referral to a plastic surgeon.” Suspicious lesions are also recorded for further follow-up and Dr. Safaie said that it is not necessary to have a referral to see a Sun Patrol doctor. He also stressed that the earlier cancer is detected the more likely serious health problems will be avoided. “Melanomas are uncommon but are the most dangerous form of skin cancer. “One in 29 Australians will develop melanoma or tumours in cells which produce melanin pigment. “Melanomas can also develop on other parts of the body such as the eye. Most commonly they appear on the face, back and lower legs,” Dr. Safaie said. “Basal cell carcinomas, or tumours in the cells that produce the top layer of skin, are the most common type of cancer in people with pale skin. Support for cancer awareness As active supporters of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, St John of God Berwick Hospital is focused on promoting fundraising activities and sharing vital health information throughout October. According to the Cancer Council, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in Australian women with one in eight females diagnosed by the time they reach 85. Although survival rates continue to improve, with 89 out of 100 women living more than five years beyond diagnosis, it is still more important than ever to raise breast cancer awareness given early detection yields the best prognosis. St John of God Berwick Hospital is proud to team up with the McGrath Foundation to support breast cancer patients in the Casey-Cardinia region. Through the foundation’s fundraising efforts and generosity, St John of God patients benefit from having access to a McGrath Breast Care Nurse who is specially trained to manage the care of breast cancer patients throughout the course of their treatment. With more than 20 years of nursing experience, Liz Douglass has been caring for the needs of local breast cancer patients since 2007. She is the principal liaison between patients and the specialists who co-ordinate their treatment - whether it be surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy.

St John of God patients benefit from having access to McGrath breast care nurse Liz Douglass who is specially trained to manage the care of breast cancer patients throughout the course of their treatment. Liz also plays an important advocacy role and helps to clarify technical or complicated information that patients may not understand. Most importantly, as a McGrath breast care nurse, Liz offers vital emotional support to cancer patients, as well as being a friend to them and their families during what can be an extremely difficult time in their lives. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a great opportunity to remind Australians to take time out to make sure they’re well informed about breast cancer detection and reducing the risks. It’s also a good time to let loved ones, who are affected by this disease, know that they are

not alone on their breast cancer journey. St John of God Berwick Hospital specializes in caring for people affected by cancer. Its specialist centre on Kangan Drive, Berwick, houses an oncology centre that’s dedicated to treating and improving the lives of people with cancer. In additional to traditional treatment, the Day Oncology and Day Infusion Centre also have a free wig service for anybody in the community experiencing cancer-related hair loss, as well as technology known as ‘cold caps’ to combat hair loss before it occurs. For more information, or to make an appointment, call 8793 0550.

Caulfield visitor Palma Merenti denied locals a share of the spoils in Pakenham Racing Club’s big Guineas Day meeting on Saturday. The Andrew Noblet-trained four-year-old kicked clear in the straight to win the feature Pakenham Mazda Handicap over 1200 metres, holding off a late finishing burst by Florence, trained locally by Dianne Clover. The winner was ridden by apprentice Boris Thornton, who collected the trophy from Pakenham Mazda principal Paul Clough in the absence of any of the horse’s owners. Club chairman Don Duffy thanked Pakenham Mazda for their continued support of the club. The focus at Racing.com Park now switches to the big Caulfield Cup eve meeting this week - the club’s first Friday night fixture. That meeting has a Wine, Dine and Equine theme and corresponds with a three-day Food Truck Carnival on the course. After that, the Pakenham Racing Club heads towards its big Pakenham Gazette Oaks Day race meeting on Thursday 9 November, then the big Sportsbet Pakenham Cup meeting a month later on Saturday 9 December. Meanwhile, the seventh race on the card on Friday night at Cranbourne was the stuff of fairytales for local trainer Greg Eurell, whose runner Falika with champion jockey Damien Oliver on board - stormed home to claim the Inglis Pinker Pinker

Palma Merenti, ridden by Boris Thornton, breaks clear of locally trained Florence to win the Pakenham Mazda Handicap at Racing.com Park. 173847 plate, named in honour of Eurell’s 2011 Cox Plate-winning mare. Pinker Pinker died from an allergic reaction to treatment just months after claiming the time-honoured Moonee Valley classic and Friday night marked the first time Eurell had a runner in the race named after her. After Oliver piloted Falika home to a famous victory - winning by just under a length from Smart As You Think - Eurell told racing.com just how special the moment was for him. “It’s just really nice to have a race in honour of her - I’ve got a lot of good memories there, of course,” he said. “To have a runner win it tonight was a very special moment for me.” Falika was second last past the post the first time around on

Friday night and was seemingly trapped back in the field on the rail before ultimately weaving her passage through. She was four lengths adrift of the leader heading into the turn for home but charged home for a stirring win. On Sunday, just a day after conquering the Everest, champion hoop Kerrin McEvoy climbed another mountain with a brilliant ride to clinch the $300,000 Cranbourne Cup aboard the Godolphin-owned Folkswood, which made its Australian racing debut ahead of the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate. The Charlie Appleby-trained son of Exceed and Excel put the race to bed early as he flew home in the final stages to defeat Berisha by two and threequarter lengths.

Maroons in shock win Picture: STEWART

CHAMBERS

By Nick Creely WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION REVIEW - ROUNDS 2 AND 3 PREMIER Clyde (7/157) suffered a minor stumbling block in the early stages of the Premier season, with a shock loss to Upper Beaconsfield (7/158) in Round 2 on Saturday. Set 158 to win after the Cougars couldn’t capitalise on a strong start from opening batsmen David Denton (38) and Shane Webster (40), the Maroons did a terrific job to chase the runs down with three wickets left in the shed. Tooradin (8/165), meanwhile, did what they needed to do against Cardinia (163), with all-rounder Russ Lehman (4/13 and 34) proving the real difference in the contest. After Bulls captain/coach Alex Nooy hit a terrific 43 in the first innings and held the innings together well, Lehman withstood some early wickets around him to help guide the ‘Gulls home in what proved to be a thrilling finish. In the remaining two matches, Pakenham (3/174) batted beautifully in their victory over Merinda Park (6/170) at Donnelly Reserve, with Cobras batsman Daniel McCalman battling manfully for his 61, while it was Chris Smith (63) and Zac Chaplin (52 not out) that did the damage with the bat for the Lions. Kooweerup (7/150) also defeated Emerald (8/149) in a tight affair at Chandler Reserve. Round 3 on Sunday brought some more surprise results, with Clyde (8/211) chasing down Cardinia’s (7/208) imposing total at E Gunton Oval. After Ricky Campbell (66) helped lift the Bulls to a commanding first innings total with a fine cameo, it was David Denton (52), Kane Avard (48) and Gavin Britt (39) that turned the game with

Cardinia's Ben Parrott survives an appeal for caught behind off Tooradin quick Cal O'Hare on Saturday. match-winning knocks. Travis Wheller (5/43) was tireless for Cardinia with the ball. Meanwhile, Zenith Wickramanayaka (61) helped guide Upper Beaconsfield (3/207) to its second victory of the weekend, this time against a gallant Merinda Park (6/173). Daniel McCalman once again held the Cobras together with a sensational 84 not out, to continue his stellar start to the 2017/'18 Premier season. In the round’s remaining matches, Kooweerup (1/148) skittled a disappointing Pakenham (147) in the grand final replay, with Dees skipper Mark Cooper (52) and Chris O’Hara making half centuries, while Tooradin (8/184) annihilated Emerald (56) at home to sit atop the ladder after three rounds. Although early in the season, Tooradin are 3-0, while Kooweerup,

Clyde and surprise packet, Upper Beaconsfield, round out the top four. Emerald and Merinda Park remain as the only two sides without a win so far. DISTRICT Round 2 firmly belonged to Cranbourne Meadows (156), with the Rebels completely dismantling Pakenham Upper Toomuc (46), with Mitchell Cowell (5/18) on fire with the ball. After picking up opening batsman Daniel Strahan early in the piece, Cowell destroyed the Yabbies top order with a fantastic spell. In other matches, a Brad Miles (77 not out) inspired Devon Meadows (3/177) who were rampant against Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll (173), Tooradin (6/164) were excellent in their four wicket win over Officer (162), with Kane Latham scoring 48 for the ‘Gulls, while Carlisle

Park Vikings (4/164) easily overtook Clyde’s (160) par score, with David Nutting (73) playing a starring role. Meanwhile, in Round 3, Cranbourne Meadows (7/206) and Tooradin (7/204) played out an entertaining clash at Lawson Poole Reserve, with Rebels’ all-rounder Ash Uppal (66 not out and 2/27) helping get his side over the line with a terrific individual display. Devon Meadows (4/166) also remained undefeated with a strong win over Clyde (9/163) - Scott Clark hit 48 not out while Lucas Carroll (5/17) was the destroyer with the ball. In the remaining two matches of the round, Carlisle Park Vikings (5/85) took Pakenham Upper Toomuc (81) to the cleaners, while Officer (8/138) got its first victory over the season against Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll. SUB-DISTRICT Nyora (8/200) and Tooradin (9/196) played out an absolute thriller in Saturday’s Round 2 action, with the Maroons falling over the line after a terrific 46 by Gavin Hackett. Cardinia (7/176), meanwhile, scraped its way to a vital three-wicket victory over Gembrook (9/171) at E Gunton Oval with a total of 347 runs scored collectively, while Lang Lang (5/177) easily accounted for Pakenham (104) and Catani (5/125) eased its way to a five-wicket victory over Aura Vale (8/120). In Round 3, Catani (3/209) stole the show with a brutal win over Tooradin (7/154), as Cats skipper Dustin Peebles (67) starred in a high-scoring affair. Gembrook (6/239) - off the back of a brilliant 97 by Tim Gray - overcame a spirited Aura Vale (204), while Craig Boswell (43 not out and 2/9) guided Cardinia (8/141) to a win over Lang Lang (139) and Pakenham (8/183) flexed its muscles to defeat Nyora (135) in a fairly one sided affair.

Jill’s a Warrior and a half By Russell Bennett Pakenham’s Big V basketball Youth League Women’s team announced its arrival in a big way last season, and in 2018 is set to cement its reputation as one of the most exciting teams to watch in its division. Leading the charge will be new head coach Jill Appleton, who will step up to the plate after cutting her teeth as an assistant in the program under Darren Thomas. She has previously coached for three years at Victorian Championship level (qualifying for the National Championships twice) and served as a D-League assistant coach in the SEABL’s youth competition. She’s thrilled to be stepping up to the plate in this, her first head coaching role. “I’m just really excited to continue to build the profile of the girls’ program, which I think is really undersold,” she said. “Having been a part of it for a couple of seasons and seeing what’s coming through, we just need to make it known that we are a club that’s on its way up. “There’s a lot coming through and it’s exciting to think this will hopefully start putting us on the map.” The Warriors finished fifth on the ladder last season with 11 wins and nine losses from their 20 games and Appleton said there’s plenty to be excited about moving forward. “That middle part and second half of the season showed more where we’re at, rather than the first half,” she explained. “It’s really exciting to see where we could take that for this season. “At different stages different players stepped

up. It took them a while to realise what playing Youth League was about. “We lost that last game (by a point) and it was really heartbreaking to lose it but in the change rooms after it the talk was about this season coming up - not worrying about missing out on finals. “The biggest thing we need to improve from last season is our defensive ability.” Youth League 2 Men’s coach Simo Pajdic will again return in his role after guiding last season’s side to top spot on the ladder with a 20-2 record before bowing out by just a point in the semifinals. “The motivation is still very much there,” he said. “The season ended abruptly for us. To only lose two games for the year (in the regular season) and then get knocked out in the first game of the finals was a bit of a bitter pill to swallow, for sure, but with the majority of those guys returning the feeling is still there. “After going 20-2 and then the season ending abruptly, you have to look at the coaching staff, the players, everything. It’s not just on the players. “We’ve done that and the goal is definitely still the same. We might just have to change up a few things. “We’re there abouts - we just have to figure out that one thing that could get us over the hump. What can we do that other teams aren’t doing that will help us in the long-run?” Finally, Division 2 Men’s coach Brent Russell will also return to the helm of his side after guiding it into the grand final series against Collingwood. “We’ve made a couple of changes - we’ve lost

Jill Appleton, Brent Russell and Simo Pajdic will coach the Pakenham Warriors’ Big V basketball teams next season. 174058 Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT a couple of big name guys - but hopefully we’ve added some more big names, and a few familiar faces who’ve been around the club are returning,” he said. “There’s definitely unfinished business after last year. “We’re looking to build and hopefully get that championship next year.” “The twin towers will return so we’re looking big. “We’ve added some height and a lot of versatile guys and a few guys with experience. “There are a few key signings that we’re finalising at the minute but it’s pretty positive for 2018.” Russell’s side is still super hungry for success - the players said as much in their exit interviews immediately after last season. For their next campaign, they’re determined to hit the ground running. “They’ve got unfinished business, and just to make it more painful we’ll make them watch Game 2 of the grand final series to get that fire in the belly even more,” Russell said. “We’ll do that in the first session in!”
