Watch out for GP traffic Traffic will be affected in Cranbourne as the City of Casey’s annual Cranbourne GP Run arrives in High Street on Saturday. From 6am to 12pm, significant traffic management will be applied. Installation of the traffic management plan on High Street will commence at 2am on Saturday 21 October. This includes kerbside parking not being available along High Street between Stawell Street and Sladen Street. From 7.30am to 11am, the southbound carriageway of High Street (South Gippsland Highway), between Stawell Street and Sladen Street, will be closed for the event. Through traffic will continue to operate in both directions on the northbound carriageway, including during the event ‘wave-off’. Side streets entering High Street from the east (Stawell Street, Lyall Street, Bakewell Street and Childers Street) will be closed after the entry point to the car parks. Therefore, access to the car parking areas from these streets will still be possible. Southbound traffic should use Clarendon Street to access Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre as they will not be able to make any left or right turns on High Street between Stawell Street and Sladen Street. Northbound traffic will not be able to make right-hand turns on High Street (South Gippsland Highway) between Sladen Street and Stawell Street. Left turns for northbound traffic from High Street between Sladen

It’s time to get revved up for the City of Casey’s most exciting annual event, with the 2017 Cranbourne GP Run just around the bend. The streets of Cranbourne are set to come alive on Saturday 21 October, as huge crowds turn out to wave-off thousands of motorcyclists who gather in High Street to travel en-masse to Phillip Island for the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix. City of Casey Mayor Cr Sam Aziz encouraged residents to come along and share in the excitement. “The Cranbourne GP Run is a truly unique event that sees central Cranbourne enlivened with the roar of motorcycles, a sea of colour and chrome and plenty of family fun for visitors to enjoy,” he said. “There will be festivities and entertainment from 8.15am before the official wave-off at 10am where thousands of riders start their engines and begin their journey to the Moto GP. “Council is proud to host this thrilling event which has a proud history in Cranbourne, and I urge all residents to come along and experience the fun and excitement for themselves.” Festivities will run from 8.15am until 11am with activities including craft fun, Daytona racing, face painting, workshops, market stalls and roving entertainers, and local talent Matt Prins will be singing the National Anthem. The charity partner for this year’s event is the Casey Cardinia Foundation and their volunteers will be out raising funds to be disbursed through their

Prins belts out big one By Brendan Rees For Narre Warren North’s Matt Prins, the prospect of singing in front of the biggest crowd of his life was “exciting.” The 24 year-old was announced as the national anthem singer at this year’s Cranbourne GP Run on Saturday 21 October. “I am feeling very excited to sing the national anthem at this year’s GP. I have performed all over the Casey area, so I have sung in front of quite large audiences, but I believe this will be one of the biggest,” he said. “I always get nervous when I perform, but that is what makes every performance special, it means you care about what you do.” “I do like to support the city I live in and all the community events that are organised.” Mr Prins, who took out first prize in the over 21 age group at a Casey Star Search for a Cause vocal competition in August this year, said he did not really expect to be selected to sing the national anthem. “I was seen singing at Westfield Fountain Gate when I competed in a local singing competition - Star Search for a Cause. Then my name was passed on to the people that organise the GP.” “Star Search for a Cause is a vocal competition that raises money for Narre Warren and Cranbourne’s Relay for life, which is a fund-raiser for cancer research. I was very happy to have finally won this competition as I had competed a few times, but never re-
ally got the crown.” Mr Prins has been attending Vocal Performance School in Cranbourne South for the past four years. “Vocal performance school is a fantastic vocal school if you wish to learn how to use your voice properly. I would recommend this school to anyone who would like to understand their voice better,” he said. “I was always singing ever since I can remember. I didn’t start taking it all seriously until I was about 18 and really wanted to give the singing industry a try.” Mr Prins also participated in the Windmill Theatre Company’s production of Chicago, performed at the Drum Theatre in Dandenong during June and July this year, adding the experience was “incredible.” “I had always wanted to do musical theatre, but I never really knew what theatre companies were out there. Being a part of this show has taught me a whole lot, and I can’t wait to be a part of many more musical theatre productions,” he said. Asked if he had been rehearsing for the GP Run, he said “a little bit, just to make sure I don’t mess up the lyrics.” Working hard to be a part of more musical theatre productions was on Mr Prins’ priority list. “I’m excited about what the future holds for me in terms of my music. I love being able to perform all around the City of Casey, but I would love to be able to take my music one step further.”

Smith’s milestone wave off By Brendan Rees Casey councillor Wayne Smith says he’s excited to be unveiled as the coveted flag bearer for this year’s Cranbourne GP Run. “I think it’s a great event simply because of the number of people it brings, and the opportunity - the crowd loves it. I would never have thought it would get as big as it has,” Cr Smith said. Well-known for his interest in the arts, Cr Smith said the GP Run was a “spectacle” as he prepares to wave off 7000-plus bikes, 15 metres off the ground in a cherry picker on Saturday 21 October. He said crowds had grown every year to wave-off thousands of motorcyclists who gathered in High Street to travel en-masse to Phillip Island for the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix. “It’s a spectacle. There’s no doubt about it. Pretty amazing spectacle with the number of bikes and the number of people that come out to see the bikes,” he said. “When they wave them off some years it’s taken nearly 25 to 30 minutes for them all to go through - that’s how busy it can get.” The wave off also celebrates Cr Smith’s 20th year as a councillor and his involvement and passion for this event. Cr Smith was elected to Cranbourne Council in 1993 and was Casey’s first mayor in 1997-’98. “The GP Run started a year or two after that (being elected as mayor in 1997). I’ve never been mayor while the GP Run was on, so I’ve never had the opportunity to go up and wave the

He said he couldn’t wait to be a part of the atmosphere where the roar of motorcycles and a sea of colour and chrome would fill the streets of Cranbourne. “I’ve always supported it. Families and young kids are impressed by it. It’s one event that unfortunately when I was mayor it wasn’t being run. I took the opportunity this time of being able to go up and wave the flag.”
Asked if it is one of the big events of the year, he said: “It is. I’ve been involved in the Berwick Show - that’s always big. For an event that only goes for a couple of hours - it’s massive.” He said in previous years the event had been “pretty impressive” with the cavalcade of motorbikes that line High Street, extending as far as the eye could see. He said waving the flag would be
an honour. “I’m looking forward to it. Luckily, I not scared of heights.” Reflecting on his 20 years with council and his list of achievements, he said, “sometimes when I look at it, I think that’s unbelievable. Council and the community have supported me in my journey.” “It’s fantastic. I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t enjoying it. I’m glad the public, the ratepayers have given me the
opportunity to be elected each time.” Since being elected in 1993 to the Cranbourne Council he said, “from day one” he advocated for a cultural centre, and as the opening of Bunjil Place looms on the horizon this month, he said it would be “pretty special.” “Being in the year Bunjil opens is why I got onto council in the first place - to lobby for a cultural centre and we’ve got it.” “It’s going to be pretty emotional for that weekend when it opens. It’s the main reason why I got elected, and it’s been my priority the whole time.” Cr Smith said he hoped visitors at the GP Run would help boost the local economy. “It would be good if people can stay. Hopefully, they do go shopping.” Asked if he thought he might be swayed to ride motorbikes after the event he said, “In my younger days, I would’ve loved to, but I think it’s too dangerous for old blokes like me.”

■ Hoon runs down disabled man...
‘I should have died’ A disabled man who survived being run down by a hoon in Cranbourne West says: “I believe I should have died.” Phil Handby, of Cranbourne West was walking on Breens Road as part of his rehabilitation from recent knee replacement surgery when an out-of-control car struck him about 5.30pm on Saturday. Mr Handby was taken to Dandenong hospital after suffering fractures to his right leg. “I was on my fourth blooming walk then I get run over. So now it’s blown everything out the window.” The 54-year-old said he had tried to signal to the driver to slow down as “he was getting so close to the kids” in a nearby park. “My first thought is those kids are in serious danger of a high speed crash that could kill I don’t know how many people.” Desperate to slow the car, Mr Handby stepped onto the road and signalled at the driver again. He said he remembers seeing the car “drift” sideways before it started careening towards him. “It was going flat-out towards us. I looked at the kids and I thought this could be a big disaster because he was all over the place.” “I just thought he’d slow down and drive off,” he said. “All of a sudden he’s pointed the car at me. I’ve gone ‘Crikey.’ He’s actually come straight at me and I thought I’m gone. Then he put on the brakes. Next he stopped and just touched my knees.” Mr Handby said he heard the wheels lock before the driver “hit the throttle” and drove towards him, pulling his right leg under the car. “I got run over by the front wheel and then my ankle got run over by the back wheel. So it went over my leg twice and busted up my ankle. After he hit me everything just went zonked.” “I didn’t even get a chance to bolt,” he said.
He believes the car was travelling close to 150 km/h, adding “I just thought I’m gone.” He said the car just missed his head: “In a split second I was fully down. When the back wheel went past my head literally it just touched the outside of my ear. That’s how close it was.” He counts himself lucky after emergency crews told him he “could’ve died.” “I believe I should’ve died. I thought I was going to die. By the grace of God I’m here.” He said doctors wouldn’t be able to operate on his leg for up to three days, until the swelling goes down. “They can’t do the operation at the moment because the trauma has made the leg so big. To give you an idea, my knee is about as big as a football.” “Apparently there’s a break and multiple fractures but they can’t do anything yet. It’s a mess. You can’t operate on something, they said it would never sew-up.” “I’ve bruised both my wrists and dislocated my little finger I think. They thought I had a cracked vertebra in my neck. Luckily after the CT scan they said ‘Your vertebrae are OK,’” he said. “Because of my knee replacement they can’t do a normal leg reconstruction because they need to come in from where the knee is to put a rod down there and they can’t.” He said he was disabled from pre-existing spinal and back injuries, and was “probably never going to work again” after the incident. Despite the ordeal, Mr Handby said he had forgiven the hoon: “I believe in God, so there’s no good holding grudges.” “In saying that everyone is accountable for what they do and I believe that he was putting himself at risk. He was putting other drivers at risk. He was putting pedestrians at risk.” He said it was lucky a driver of a fourwheel drive caught the hoon on their dash camera. Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident.

Mick leaves a solid foundation By Garry Howe Long-serving City of Casey councillor Mick Morland was a great supporter of the Casey Cardinia Foundation and a regular fixture at its Annual Charity Dinner, particularly since Casey became involved a few years back. Mick wasn’t at the Cardinia Cultural Centre for the Foundation’s 14th dinner on Friday night, 13 October, having passed away after being hit by a car while walking not far from his Berwick home last June. But his presence was still certainly felt. After the accident his wife Kay asked that donations be made to the Foundation in lieu of flowers and that money - together with a significant contribution from the City of Casey was presented by the Foundation in his honour. The inaugural Mick Morland Memorial Grant went to the Casey Basketball Association for the establishment of a wheelchair basketball program at Casey Stadium. His daughter Rebecca Sanders and niece Lisa O’Keefe made the announcement on the family’s behalf on Friday night. They said Mick - a keen sportsman and fanatical Richmond supporter would have been thrilled to think that the money went towards providing greater sports opportunities for people with a disability. In a nice touch, Lisa later bought a Richmond jumper signed by the 2017 premiership team at auction. Around 300 people enjoyed fine lo-

Sun shines on the Cup One perfect weekend. That’s what Cranbourne racegoers were presented with from Friday’s Pinker Pinker Plate, to Sunday’s signature event - the $300,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup. It was in stark contrast to the running of the 2016 Cup being abandoned due to strong winds, with Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge saying: “We were probably owed one after that.” “I suppose the damage that the winds did last year, we were probably owed a couple (of good days) to make sure we could claw back and get back ahead of the game because it certainly knocked the club around a little bit financially,” he admitted. But racegoers were treated to a spectacular weekend, with Falika trained by Cranbourne’s Greg Eurell - fittingly claiming Friday night’s Pinker Pinker Plate, named in memory of Eurell’s 2011 Cox Plate winner. “Obviously Friday night was a great result, but also with the National Breast Cancer Foundation function we had with approximately 400 people in an enclosure hosted by Shane Crawford, so we raised some money for a really important partner and a really important charity we’re aligned with,” Mr Bainbridge explained. “That was a really good night and a great way to kick off the new night racing season.” Mr Bainbridge said organisers were delighted with the near-flawless weather over the weekend, and the good behaviour of the racegoers who packed the venue in droves. “Patrons were really well be-
haved,” he said. “I know the police and security were really pleased with everyone’s behaviour.” And off the track, the Fashions on the Field added plenty of colour to Cup day. “Cranbourne Park, our fashions on the field sponsor, continue to deliver great outcomes for us,” Mr Bainbridge said. “We’re delighted to be involved with them - they’re a tremendous local business. “The shopping precinct is now second to none and has helped drive Cranbourne forward. For them to be involved with our fashions on the field is terrific for us.” Mr Bainbridge also spoke of the excitement of seeing Godolphin star Folkswood - ridden by Kerrin McEvoy and trained by Charlie Appleby - salute in the $300,000 showpiece TAB Cranbourne Cup on Sunday. “We always love to see Cranbourne horses win, there’s no question about that, but from a club point of view to have an international with the Godolphin stable target the Cranbourne Cup come out and win it with what’s clearly a high-class and serious galloper, and certainly a horse that’ll be worth following for the remainder of the Spring, was great,” he said. “The Cranbourne Cup was on the back page of the Sydney paper on Monday morning and that doesn’t happen too often. “I think that horse now is a chance to go on to a Cox Plate with its key target being the Emirates Stakes on the last day of the Flemington carnival so it’s a serious Group One horse and it was great for them to target our race.”

Holdens cruise into history By Brendan Rees Cranbourne North resident Colin Crane is ready to drive his 1975 Torana SLR 5000 with other Holden enthusiasts on Sunday October 22 October for a commemorative cruise to mark the end of an era. As the last Holden would rolls off the production line in Australia on 20 October, Aussie Torana Legends Social Cruisers and HQ Holden Cruise Club of Victoria are calling for dedicated Holden owners to gather outside the old Holden Manufacturing Plant in Dandenong on Sunday for an ‘End of manufacturing cruise’ to Trafalgar Holden Museum. Mr Crane, also the Aussie Torana Legends Social Cruisers group manager said the cruise was “very important” to remember the history of Holden. He encouraged all Holden owners to join for
the drive on Sunday for a chance to reminisce. “From my point of view, I can understand both sides of the story but for me there’s the history. It’s like the old saying ‘We love meat pies, football, kangaroos and Holden cars’,” Mr Crane said. “We encourage anyone who has got a Holden because it’s history in the making and we’ve really got to support and remember that history. The reason part of this group started was because of the history and legends of our past. And we want to keep that history living.” “We’re meeting at the old site - there are cafes at the old site now. They’re opening up and they’re doing egg and bacon rolls and coffees for breakfast for whoever turns up,” he said. “I’ve got Joe Felice coming. He had different management roles with Holden for 43 years including manager of motorsport HDT racing of the Peter Brock era and other management.”
From the old Holden Manufacturing Plant, Mr Crane says a convoy of Holden cars will drive to Trafalgar Holden Museum where more than 500 Holdens of different models and eras will be on display. For Mr Crane, Holden was not only a passion - it was a part of his identity. “My dad was a Holden owner, his dad before that was a Holden owner. A lot of my family were Holden owners. I was a Holden owner. I’ve still got Toranas now. I’ve got a 75 LH SLR 5000 and I’ve also got a 1976 SS original hatch.” Mr Crane said the Holden brand had been loved in this country since 1948 and it was a “sad moment” to salute an end of era for Australian car manufacturing. “To lose the history and to lose that era and just say goodbye, I just think it’s not good enough. I understand from Holden’s point of view they’re doing it cheaper overseas and they can make
more money. “There’s hundreds of small companies that supply all these factories with stuff like racks, bits and pieces and so on and they’re all going out of business.” He said his Aussie Torana Legends Social Cruisers group was a “friendly atmosphere group,” adding “There’s no issues, no politics, and no demands.” Any Holden owner is welcome to join the commemorative cruise on Sunday 22 October. Attendees are asked to meet at the old Holden manufacturing plant located at 125 Princes Highway, Dandenong South at 8am for a 9am departure. Suburban Cafe will be doing breakfast for everyone with egg and bacon toasties and coffee for $8. All Holdens welcome to remember the end of an era.

Picture: CONTRIBUTED This grant funding was part of a $5.1 million the Federal Government has provided to the Australian Men’s Shed Association through to 2018-’19 to support the national network of Men’s Sheds. Casey-Cranbourne Men’s Shed committee member Rob Adams said the grant was critical in running their shed’s activities and covering “big ticket” items they needed. “We sought the grant just approved to purchase and install a water tank which will assist our environmental foot print, and when installed will allow us to offer a new activity to shed members, a vegie garden where the men can grow their own produce. This will provide another healthy, outdoor activity that the men can share as a group or have their own small patch,” he said.
Casey-Cranbourne Men’s Shed president Dennis Vernon said the grant was “fantastic” news. “We’ve got to try and come up with that sort of money. It’s almost impossible. So to put a variation of what the Men’s Shed does, it’s just another way of adding to it. A Men’s Shed is designed for blokes to do what they want to do.” “All we’ve got is the shed at the moment, and we’re adding on as we get more grants - we do more and more things,” Mr Vernon said. He said the Men’s Shed mainly did woodwork, but added “If people have select ideas, well then they’ve got to chase funding to go ahead with that idea if they want to go into metal work or they want to do gardening.” He said the water tank was the
first step towards creating a garden. “This is all part of it - to build it all up to start it happening and to provide the water to do it and maintain it.” Casey Councillor Amanda Stapledon said the funding was “fantastic” and would help continue the “great work” of the Men’s Shed. “I think that’s indicative of how important the Men’s Sheds are. They provide so many great outcomes,” she said. “I can imagine they are desperately in need of funding. It’s great to see them get it, I think.” “They’re doing such great work, doing all the things that Men’s Shed does, building on skills, making sure people are included and addressing men’s physical and mental health.”

Casey-Cranbourne Men’s Shed is a big winner after receiving federal funding which will help the shed buy a water tank for gardening. As part of the National Shed Development Program, CaseyCranbourne is one of four Men’s Sheds to receive thousands of dollars’ worth of funding to help purchase equipment, undertake facility upgrades and provide materials for community projects. The other three Men’s Sheds are New Peninsula, Safety Beach-Dromana and Junction Village. Member for Flinders Greg Hunt said the funding would support men’s physical and mental health and wellbeing. “This funding round helps Men’s Sheds to buy tools and equipment, support community projects and training, maintain or develop their buildings, or create local activities to improve men’s health.” “Men’s Sheds help men, particularly as they get older, to connect with each other and prevent social isolation and preventable health conditions,” Mr Hunt said. “These grants mean a lot to Men’s Shed members and the broader community, and I congratulate them on their continued success.” “Men’s Sheds provide a sense of community, a safe and friendly environment where men can work on meaningful projects at their own pace, in their own time, in the company of other men.” “Members have an opportunity to pass their skills to others, learn new things, or just catch up regularly with other men in the community for a chat and a cup of tea,” Mr Hunt said.

Every time someone removes or defaces that sign they are saying to voters, you are NOT free to decide for yourselves. SSM activists do not want a democracy, and that’s why l am voting no. Let me also add that I am a gay man myself living in a same-sex relationship, so my opinion frankly counts more than the vague gesture demanded by those who will never be in a same-sex relationship. I posted these details on my Facebook page - I’ve had over 700 thumbs up from non-gay people, but to my surprise, it was a number of very unpleasant gay people who attacked me and called me the bigot. The force is with Luke The member for Narre Warren North,and Minister for Roads, Luke Donnellan,was at the Endeavour Hills Shopping Centre today, October 14. I thought this was an opportunity to ask the minister for a reply to some of the written and verbal questions I presented to him at the meeting he held almost four weeks ago inside the Narre Warren Bowls Club. I asked the minister why he hadn’t replied to my questions: Where does he stand on the issue of drug injecting rooms and will the Andrews Government be legalising drug injecting rooms anywhere in Victoria? Mr Donnellan replied: “I am replying now. There are no plans to legalise them for the moment." I then asked why hadn’t the Andrews Government investigated the alternatives to drug injecting rooms? Scandinavian countries and cities like San Francisco can offer alternatives programs to drug injecting rooms. Why haven’t they been investigated? Luke Donnellan simply said: “Drug injecting rooms are not being looked at - at the moment." I then asked why is the Andrews Government and the Minister for Transport, Jacinta Allan, implementing a policy of deregulation,

Tiger eyes A second purported sighting of a Tasmanian tiger in less than a month in the Langwarrin South area has thylacine hunter Michael Moss intrigued. “There’s definitely something matching the description of a Tasmanian tiger,” Mr Moss said. The revelation comes after a Frankston resident told Mr Moss he saw an animal “identical to that famous black and white photograph of the Tasmanian tiger” in the Fauna and Flora Reserve in Langwarrin South three weeks ago. The witness, who wished to remain anonymous, told Mr Moss he had been walking on the main track during a wet afternoon when he saw the supposedly extinct creature. “Out came an animal 15 feet away standing on the track. It was large and scared me. It was
not a fox or dog. It was scraggy, a fawnish colour. I could make out darker stripes on its back,” said the witness. Mr Moss, a former Cranbourne South resident said, the witness also claimed to have also recently seen the head of a fox, “no body - freshly killed” beside the Owen Dawson Track in the Langwarrin Flora and Fauna reserve. “A week later on the same track and spot he saw the intestines of an animal freshly killed. He came across a visiting Parks Victoria ranger in the reserve recently and relayed this to the ranger but the ranger was disinterested and did not take anything down in writing,” he said. The sighting follows a Langwarrin South resident who said he was “100 per cent” certain he spotted a Tasmanian tiger that had a “long rod tail” near the reserve on Friday 29 Sep-

Mr Moss, who has spent the past 20 years hunting for the mysterious marsupial, said the reserve was on his radar. “I have upped my trail cameras to three in the Langwarrin South area.” “It’s scientifically possible for these creatures to exist locally,” he said. “Any Tasmanian tiger in the reserve would be passing in and out maybe from outside the catchment, or they have large territories and are in Langwarrin South and other areas as part of that.” Mr Moss said Parks Victoria should not “rule out” the possibility that the Tasmanian tiger could be roaming the area. “Prime Tasmanian tiger habitat abounds in Westernport and Peninsula as broken farm country, which is what Tasmanian tigers love.”

By Brendan Rees An 18-year-old Cranbourne North man was devastated after finding his car damaged at the front of his home, leaving a repair bill of $5000. Blake Williams says his neighbours heard a noise about 9.30pm when it was suspected his purple Ford ute was hit in Crestway Drive, Cranbourne North, on Monday 9 October. “Dad came out to move his car for the night, and he came in and woke me up and said ‘someone’s hit your car,’” Mr Williams said. He said the rear right tail light and “all the back end” were damaged. He said he saved up for two years to buy the car which was his first. And having only third party insurance means Mr Williams could face paying for the damage which he says is about half the car’s value. “I’ve been looking at every house to see if they have cameras. I want to find out who did it.” “It’s the kind of person who shows who they are really. No respect. No morals either,” he said. “It’s annoying. Hopefully, we can find them.” Cranbourne police are investigating and appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information is urged to call Cranbourne police on 5991 0600.

Cranbourne police are appealing to help find a car stolen from Cranbourne East. Police say a 2011 Holden Commodore sedan, registration 1LI-4KP, was allegedly stolen from a nature strip in Benedetto Crescent sometime between Wednesday 4 October at 11pm and Monday 6.30pm on 9 October. The owner of the car, Daniel, who declined to reveal his surname, said he had returned from holidays when he made the discovery, adding “It was a “pretty sickening feeling.” “It’s shaken me up quite a bit unfortunately,” he said. “It was really strange because it took me a couple of minutes to register that it wasn’t there.” He said he was not sure how the car was taken. Daniel said he checked all his house doors and windows where the keys were kept inside, adding “as far as I could see it was all enclosed.” He said he only moved into his home about five months ago before realising “there’s all this crime in the area.” “It’s absolutely ridiculous. I’ve tried to save as much money as I could to buy a house comfortably but then moving into an area where there is so much of this happening, it’s absolutely disgusting people can get away with this stuff.” He said he did not feel safe in his own home now. “Any noise that I could hear, I’m constantly turning on the lights and looking outside.” Constable Regan Ballard of Cranbourne police said they were investigating the matter and appealed for any witnesses with information to contact Cranbourne Police. “Unfortunately they’ve taken it while he’s been away. It’s just gone and we haven’t been able to recover it yet,” Constable Ballard said. “We’re investigating it further and searching for the car. We don’t condone any of the behaviours and any offenders will be caught and prosecuted.” Anyone with information is advised to contact Cranbourne police on 5991 0600.

Poolside Beaconsfield will be joining forces with the Beaconsfield Community Bank to hold its annual open and sale day on Saturday 28 October. Having taken over the business 12 months ago, director and owner of Poolside Beaconsfield Grant Forbes said that this year the celebrations would take on a more community feel and encouraged local residents to become involved in supporting their town. “The store has held an open day for at least four or five years,” Grant said. “The open day is, arguably, one of the biggest, if not the biggest in the state of Victoria - it is huge. “In the industry, it’s renowned, everyone knows about it. But in the past it’s been all about us. “I wanted the open day this year to be more of a community event. So I approached the Bendigo Bank as they’re big on the community aspect and they’ve agreed to come on board. “There will be a barbecue out the front and 100 per cent of the gold coin donations from that will go to the OTIS Foundation to support families dealing with breast cancer.” The day will also feature local barista Ben from C-U-Latte as well as kids’ entertainment in the form of jumping castles and fairy floss. For those in the market for pool supplies, there will be up to 30 per cent off products store-wide as well as a display of Sapphire Spas. But as Grant explained, the new open day is driven by his strong belief in locals supporting locals and their communities. He also stressed that the earlier cancer is detected the more likely serious health problems will be avoided. “Melanomas are uncommon but are the most dangerous form of skin cancer.

As active supporters of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, St John of God Berwick Hospital is focused on promoting fundraising activities and sharing vital health information throughout October. According to the Cancer Council, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in Australian women with one in eight females diagnosed by the time they reach 85. St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital provides a cardiac rehabilitation program for people who have had an acute heart event. The program provides information and guidance on how to recover from a heart event and improve an individual’s quality of life. Emma, the Cardiac Rehabilitation Coordinator, explained that there was also a need to assist carers of cardiac patients. “We found carers were in need of some support and so the Cardiac Team collaborated with the Pastoral Care Team to design a session for carers only, so the Cardiac Carers High Tea commenced,” Emma said. “Carers can spend the time connecting and being supported by our Pastoral Care Team while their loved one attends their program in the gym.” The sessions aim is to create an ambient experience in a quiet room with comfortable chairs away from the busy gym. The carers group facilitated by a pastoral practitioner enables individuals to explore their own experience of being a carer - both the challenges and the joys. McEvoy, fresh off winning Australia’s richest race ‘The Everest’ with Redzel on Saturday, produced a cup-day masterclass to pilot the lightly raced five-year-old to an impressive Australian debut. Folkswood, who ran a close-up second in a group one in Dubai in March, was given a gun run by the Melbourne Cup-winning jockey, landing one off the fence shortly after emerging from the tricky gate 11. McEvoy camped just off the pace, asking the son of Exceed and Excel for the supreme effort at the 800, dashing clear off the front-running Grey Lion and the fast-finishing Berisha to give the Charlie Appleby gelding his first taste of success in group or listed company. The win continued Appleby’s love affair with Victoria’s regional features, adding to his 2016 wins in the Geelong Cup with Qewy and the Bendigo Cup with Francis of Assisi. But it was McEvoy who stole the show, giving Folkswood a dream run throughout. “I sort of wanted to be in the one, two, three but given the way it unfolded, I was able just to slot in behind them and get a nice trail,” McEvoy told racing.com after the race. “When Guardini came around me, it got my horse a little bit keen, but when Guardini went forward I was able just to pop out and go with him and get him more comfortable. “He made a nice sustained run from the half mile onwards, my horse, and I knew he was able to cope with that given what Charlie had said and watching his replays. Currently, the DDCA is a 12 teams per grade competition, but after a review from the association, put forward its thoughts of proposed changes identical to that of neighbouring competitions such as the MPCA and the WGCA for the first time on 11 September. “We’ve been backwards and forwards on this (change) for some time, but at the end of the day, it had to happen - there was little to achieve by delaying it,” DDCA secretary Ray Nicholls said. “We think it was the right time to make these changes, (and) it will make for a more even, balanced competition in the future.” Here are the changes that will be implemented from the 2018/19 season: - In a normal 21 week season, each team would play the other seven sides in their grade twice, once in a two-day game and once in a oneday match. - The reduction in teams per grade is considered a fairer and more balanced model and affords teams a greater opportunity to play in finals. - To achieve the model, the bottom four sides at the conclusion of the 2017/18 season will be removed from Turf 1 and placed with the top four teams in Turf 2 to form the Turf 2 grade. The bottom eight sides in Turf 2 would move into Turf 3 and so on until all turf grades had eight teams. - If a shortfall in teams existed in the bottom turf grade, then consideration will be given to creating a composite turf grade by including the required number of synthetic sides. - The Match Committee will have discretion to adjust teams throughout the grades as is seen necessary (e.g. new sides being entered). - The advent of eight teams per grade will also flow through to the senior synthetic and junior grades. The only difference will be that clubs will nominate their preferred grades as usual and the Match Committee will adjust as necessary, based on history.-

Bears show their might By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 & 2 REVIEW - ROUND 1 (Day 2) Berwick fired a powerful warning shot right across Souter Oval on Saturday, with the Bears opening its 2017/18 Turf 1 season with a ruthless victory over Dingley. Starting the day at 1/107 in pursuit of the Dingoes’ total of 174, the Bears lost star batsman Adam Watson (54) early in the day off exciting spinner Dinuka Hettiarachchi, but it didn’t halt the momentum. Matt Chasemore ground out a solid 24 in his first innings in Berwick colours, while the likes of Ryan Crawford (40), stand-in skipper Nathan Pilon (38) and Darren de Souza (32) all contributed strongly before declaring at 6/235, a narrow lead of just 174. The Dingoes managed to avoid outright, with batsmen Matt Hague (30 not out) and Ryan McLean (18 not out) getting through 23 overs unscathed. Down at Greaves Reserve, Cranbourne skipper Lucas Ligt’s plan on defending its total of 8/238 against Dandenong West came to fruition, with the Eagles winning comfortably. The plan not only saw them walk away with the points on Saturday at Greaves Reserve, but also find a formula that may see them continually shock sides this season. As is the key with defending any total, early wickets were paramount, and the early scalps of Peter Atkinson and youngster Ethan French caught behind off the sure gloves of David Pratt kick started the day. Cam Kelly (2/32), Tim Fathers (1/61) and Steve Miller (2/21) all hitting relentless lines, the cracks began to show for the Bulls. Wickets continually fell, and suddenly the Bulls found themselves 7/108 and well behind the curve ball. Despite a hamstring injury, new Dandenong West skipper Shanuka Dissanayaka (71) tried to resurrect his side’s woes, but after losing his stumps after some sharp bowling by Boyal, the Bulls were too far back at 8/127. A late 59-run stand to Matin Sultani (38) and Riley Siwes (24 not out) helped put some respectability to the scoreboard, with the Bulls finishing the day well short at 9/192. Meanwhile, a pair of centuries to Jayson Hobbs (109 not out) and Daniel Watson (125 not out) delivered Buckley Ridges an almighty victory against a deflated Narre Warren at Park Oval. The Magpies had a strong first day, compiling a competitive 213 off the back of a 93 by Janaka Liyanabadalge, but simply had no answers for Buckley’s electric top order. Liyanabadalge managed to take the one and only wicket of Wes Nicholas for 27 after a 52 run opening stand with Hobbs, before Watson entered the crease and flayed the ball to all parts. The pair put on an unbeaten 223 runs in very little time, with Watson hitting six maximums in his brutal knock, before stumps were called with the Bucks on 1/275. In Turf 2, a top-notch 85 to Beaconsfield recruit Josh Mailing delivered the Tigers a comfortable opening round victory over Coomoora. Chasing 154 for victory, the Tigers easily knocked off the runs, with Mailing combining with Ruwantha Fernandopulle (48) in the match-winning partnership. For footballers in their mid-30s facing the end of their careers at senior level and looking for a way of staying involved in the game, the Beaconsfield Superules side may have just the solution. The team, based out of Perc Allison Oval in Beaconsfield, will be coached by former Kooweerup and Hampton Park senior coach Matt Shorey next year, and it’s on the hunt for players aged 35 and over. Shorey opened up, saying there are so many players currently facing their footy mortality at clubland who haven’t quite accepted it. He knows that feeling all too well. “I still didn’t really accept it - that I was done,” he said. “It’s when you actually accept it that you look at your next chapter. Do I take up golf? Do I take up something else? You need that outlet - you just need that if you’ve played footy all your life.” And then there’s the potential for players who’ve gone through their careers without winning a premiership to rectify that at Beaconsfield. “I was lucky enough to play in one,” Shorey said. “At that point, then we probably weren’t favourites to win it but at least you got to play in one - that’s the main thing. “This is a great opportunity for it to happen - to really get Beacy successful, to recruit some older players who’re in that mid-range from 35 to 45. There are a few guys I’ve played against who still have a bit of talent and some pace there who could definitely come in now if they still have a bit of fitness, themselves.” Shorey acknowledged it was a commitment for players - and indirectly, their families - to get involved with Superules, but not in the same way as it was in the previous chapters of their careers at clubland. “The wives and kids have put up with a lot over the past 15 to 20 years of your footy career, and then all of a sudden you say you want to play again,” he said. “But you do enjoy it out there - it’s kind of

Mixed bag for side NARRE WARREN BOWLS The week started on a bad note for Narre Warren with all three Tuesday teams being beaten. At Fountain Gate, Division 2 suffered their first defeat at the hands of Burden Park. The only winning rink was Jos van Hout, Reg Young, Geoff Ampt and Rod Lane, and despite surrendering a good lead at lunchtime, won by 2 shots, 20-18. Jim Millar, Wilma Haringsma, Eric Sydenham and Peter Hayden fought hard, but faltered late to go down 15-25 and Tina Courtin, Ernesto Vergara, Alan Mark and Keith Mark went down 13-30. Narre Warren (1) 2-48 lost to Burden Park (1) 14-73 Division 3 travelled to Keysborough to play Dandenong RSL Rec. It was an improved performance, winning two rinks, but still suffered a disappointing loss. Stan Bulmer, Truus Henneman, Enid Gibb and Judy Naughton won 20-18, while Nancy Pugh, Rose Rasmussen, Micki Horton and Andy Tobler won 22-21, but Denise Peeler, Janice Moran, Wally Finlayson and Jen Sherry went down 8-35. The results this week were not as strong as last week, with only four sides posting a win. The third side had a great two shot win against Hampton Park away while the sevens at home to Churchill Park Waverley Golf came out on top with a one shot win. The second and eighth sides recorded very convincing wins on the day over Chirnside Park and Sandringham on home turf.

CRANBOURNE BOWLS Cranbourne top side wins again while ladies team starts the new season with a first up win A tough competitive game at home resulted in a seven-shot win against Pakenham on Saturday for the top side to give them two wins out of two while the ladies started the bowls season with a two-shot win first up game against Edithvale. New skip Sue Hudson was in sizzling form with a win in the ladies team on Tuesday by nine shots and following up with an 18-shots win in Saturday’s 2nd side. Side 1 Division 2 Playing at home skip, Frank Byrne went down by two shots on the last end of the day while skip Ron “Two Dogs” Lyfield finished with a draw which was a very good competitive effort. However, it was skip John McKenna who won by three shots and skip Barry “The General” Thomas and his crew who went on to win by six shots which got Cranbourne over the line. Side 1 Ladies Division 1 Having lost three grand finals over the last three years has forced the ladies to make some changes to the list and add some additional strength to the side. Sue Hudson comes into the side with strong credentials and three times club singles champion Lynne Wood has also come into the side. A first-up win was welcome but the narrow margin was a scare. Hopefully, the girls will now go on to have a successful season from here. Side 2 Division 3 A very strong win by a massive 45 shots against Mount Waverley was a great reversal of form from last week. Outstanding performances came from the teams of skip Sue Hudson and her crew of Stan Myers, Gavin Wright and Noel Arnold and skip Chris “The Chief” Griffiths and his crew of club legend Ray Boskell, John McKisky and Michael Scotter. The rinks of Farrington and Dudink were both good contributors, narrowly losing by small margins. Side 3 Division 5 Skip Sofio Raiti and his team had a good win but the remaining rinks went down in close contests to record a 19-shot loss to Willow Lodge. Maroons in shock win By Nick Creely WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION REVIEW - ROUNDS 2 AND 3 PREMIER Clyde (7/157) suffered a minor stumbling block in the early stages of the Premier season, with a shock loss to Upper Beaconsfield (7/158) in Round 2 on Saturday. Set 158 to win after the Cougars couldn’t capitalise on a strong start from opening batsmen David Denton (38) and Shane Webster (40), the Maroons did a terrific job to chase the runs down with three wickets left in the shed. Tooradin (8/165), meanwhile, did what they needed to do against Cardinia (163), with all-rounder Russ Lehman (4/13 and 34) proving the real difference in the contest. After Bulls captain/coach Alex Nooy hit a terrific 43 in the first innings and held the innings together well, Lehman withstood some early wickets around him to help guide the ‘Gulls home in what proved to be a thrilling finish. In the remaining two matches, Pakenham (3/174) batted beautifully in their victory over Merinda Park (6/170) at Donnelly Reserve, with Cobras batsman Daniel McCalman battling manfully for his 61, while it was Chris Smith (63) and Zac Chaplin (52 not out) that did the damage with the bat for the Lions. Kooweerup (7/150) also defeated Emerald (8/149) in a tight affair at Chandler Reserve. Round 3 on Sunday brought some more surprise results, with Clyde (8/211) chasing down Cardinia’s (7/208) imposing total at E Gunton Oval. After Ricky Campbell (66) helped lift the Bulls to a commanding first innings total with a fine cameo, it was David Denton (52), Kane Avard (48) and Gavin Britt (39) that turned the game with match-winning knocks. After picking up opening batsman Daniel Strahan early in the
piece, Cowell destroyed the Yabbies top order with a fantastic spell. In other matches, a Brad Miles (77 not out) inspired Devon Meadows (3/177) who were rampant against Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll (173), Tooradin (6/164) were excellent in their four wicket win over Officer (162), with Kane Latham scoring 48 for the ‘Gulls, while Carlisle Park Vikings (4/164) easily overtook Clyde’s (160) par score, with David Nutting (73) playing a starring role. Meanwhile, in Round 3, Cranbourne Meadows (7/206) and Tooradin (7/204) played out an entertaining clash at Lawson Poole Reserve, with Rebels’ all-rounder Ash Uppal (66 not out and 2/27) helping get his side over the line with a terrific individual display. Devon Meadows (4/166) also remained undefeated with a strong win over Clyde (9/163) - Scott Clark hit 48 not out while Lucas Carroll (5/17) was the destroyer with the ball. In the remaining two matches of the round, Carlisle Park Vikings (5/85) took Pakenham Upper Toomuc (81) to the cleaners, while Officer (8/138) got its first victory
over the season against Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll. SUB-DISTRICT Nyora (8/200) and Tooradin (9/196) played out an absolute thriller in Saturday’s Round 2 action, with the Maroons falling over the line after a terrific 46 by Gavin Hackett. Cardinia (7/176), meanwhile, scraped its way to a vital three-wicket victory over Gembrook (9/171) at E Gunton Oval with a total of 347 runs scored collectively, while Lang Lang (5/177) easily accounted for Pakenham (104) and Catani (5/125) eased its way to a five-wicket victory over Aura Vale (8/120). In Round 3, Catani (3/209) stole the show with a brutal win over Tooradin (7/154), as Cats skipper Dustin Peebles (67) starred in a high-scoring affair. Gembrook (6/239) - off the back of a brilliant 97 by Tim Gray - overcame a spirited Aura Vale (204), while Craig Boswell (43 not out and 2/9) guided Cardinia (8/141) to a win over Lang Lang (139) and Pakenham (8/183) flexed its muscles to defeat Nyora (135) in a fairly one sided affair.
Swans take a nose-dive By Nick Creely VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUND 2 Casey-South Melbourne suffered the wrath of a James Seymour and Aaron Ayre epic against Essendon on Saturday, with the Swans’ lowly start to the season continuing. On a flat Windy Hill track, tailormade for batting, Essendon skipper Aaron Ayre put the pressure on the Swans and asked them to bat. The Swans suffered an early stumble with Kasun Suriaratchie (5) and Devin Pollock (19) losing their wickets early, and Lachlan Sperling (29) seemed destined to cash in before losing his stumps off developing spinner Liam Bowe. But as he did last week, Jordan Wyatt (55 off 45 balls) helped resurrect the visitors with a dominant knock that continues his strong start to the season, hitting seven boundaries and a maximum. Combined with Michael Wallace (39), Chris Benedek (44) and Ryan Eaton (26) - who all contributed strongly through the middle - the Swans scored a formidable 257, but slightly under par total, as coach Prabath Nissanka explained. “I can’t say we batted really well, the wicket was really good for batting, we needed to score more than
275 I guess - in the first and last 10 overs, we didn’t capitalise I guess, and we lost too many wickets in the beginning and the end,” he said. Bustling quickie Brendan Rose (1/59) found the early scalp, with Ryan Eaton snaring a catch to remove Aaron Shellie in the second over, but from there the fun stopped. Both Ayre (145 not out) and Seymour (94) feasted on and dismantled the Swans with brute aggression, in an extraordinary 198 run partnership at almost a run a ball. Seymour - a former Casey player - was in vintage touch in just his second dig after returning to the competition after a season in Tasmania, while Ayre was simply unstoppable with his long hitting. They overtook the Swans at the end of the 39th over with eight wickets still left in the shed. Nissanka said that many factors - including some tough conditions - made life difficult for his bowlers, but didn’t make light of what was a disappointing performance. “Our fast bowlers struggled, but it’s no excuse - you've got to somehow manage what you have got, and we didn’t bowl well,” he said. Wyatt will also miss an extended period after dislocating a finger in the field, in what is a bitter blow for the Swans. “We haven’t had a discussion at this stage (about changes), and if we did, it is likely there will be only one change,” he said. “At the moment, probably only Jackson Fry can come in - he’s been injured and that’s been the only reason he’s been out of the team - we
wanted to give him two matches in the twos and bring him up. “Talent wise, we have the same squad; it’s something to do with the thinking I believe. “We talked about things that actually went wrong (after the match), and we had a discussion about both batting and bowling, and hopefully we can train those areas this week and come up well.” The Swans, second last on the ladder, will be desperate to bounce back on Saturday, with the club hosting St Kilda in a vital one day match at Casey Fields.
