Spring into Racing All roads are leading to Tynong at Pakenham Racing Club’s Racing.com Park

The Spring Racing Carnival officially kicks off this Saturday, with three Group One races heading up the Caulfield Guineas card and the new $10 million The Everest highlighting the Sydney racing scene. Locally, all roads lead to Racing.com Park at Tynong for the big Pakenham Mazda Guineas Day race meeting, which heralds the start of an action-packed few months for the Pakenham Racing Club. After Guineas Day, the focus switches to the big Food Truck Carnival on course from Friday 20 October to Sunday 22 October. That includes the club’s first Friday night race meeting and the opportunity to tuck into some of the region’s finest fare under the Wine, Dine and Equine theme. After that, the spotlight shines on what has become one of the most popular events on the local social and sporting calendar - the Pakenham

Gazette Oaks Day race meeting. Perfectly positioned in the middle of the fourday Melbourne Cup carnival, Oaks Day provides a perfect excuse for the ladies - and men - to dress up for a fun and potentially lucrative day out. There are great prizes up for grabs in the Fashions on the Field - and the chance to back a winner or two. The Spring Carnival action rounds out with the huge $250,000 Sportsbet Pakenham Cup race meeting, which has metropolitan Saturday status for the second year. Cup prizemoney has been boosted by $50,000 and total prizemoney on offer for the day is edging towards $1 million. The Racing.com VOBIS Gold Bullion has been increased by $20,000 to $100,000 and both the Schweppes David Bourke Memorial Handicap and Stabil-Lime Group Handicap offer $100,000 in prizemoney.

And they’re off at Racing.com Park for an abundance of Spring Racing Carnival action. “It’s an exciting time of year,” said club chief executive Michael Hodge. “There is so much going on - both on and off the racetrack.” Racing.com Park has quickly established itself

as a non-race day destination as well. The complex has recently hosted six school valedictory dinners and numerous sporting presentation nights.

A tip’s a tip, mate - so get on it! The Gazette’s football Tipstars are now turning their hands to horse racing.

Many have backed up from the AFL season to try their luck at the Spring Racing Carnival in the inaugural Gazette Gallopers tipping competition. The 16 candidates have selected eight horses, one trainer and one jockey and will be allocated points for any success their stable has over the eight major Spring Racing Carnival meetings. The contest kicks off with this weekend’s big Caulfield Guineas day meeting, then goes on to the Caulfield Cup,

Cox Plate, Derby Day, Melbourne Cup, VRC Oaks, Emirates Stakes day and rounds out with the big Sandown carnival the week after that. Bruce Andrews from Dahlsens Pakenham was pipped by Glenn Vandelight in the footy Tipstars and hopes to go one better in the Gallopers. A VRC member and corporate member at Pakenham, Bruce loves his horses and was on hand to watch Winx win her 21st consecutive race at Flemington on Saturday. He has Winx in his stable. “I am a big fan of thinking the better

horses win the good races, so I went for a lot of the topliners,” he said. Bruce said he was tossing up between Darren Weir and the Hayes-Dabernig camp in the training ranks before swaying toward the latter and reckons the jockey selection comes down to a bit of luck. He is hoping Kerrin McEvoy can transfer his current Sydney form to the Melbourne Carnival. To check out the Gazette Gallopers tipsters, see page 7 of this special Spring Racing wrap-around feature.

GO IN TO THE DRAW TO WIN MINI MARQUEE FOR 10 PEOPLE AT THE PAKENHAM CUP

By Garry Howe There’s no hotter training combination in Australia at present than the Hayes-Dabernig team. The team of David Hayes, his son Ben Hayes and nephew Tom Dabernig looks set to again play a big part as the Spring Carnival action rolls into Pakenham Racing Club’s Racing.com Park headquarters. The stable dominated last year’s Pakenham Cup meeting, winning four consecutive races including the $200,000 feature event with Pilote D’essai. And they will soon expand the operation to Pakenham as well, having purchased two trainer allotments to set up a satellite training facility there. Prizemoney for the Sportsbet Pakenham Cup has been lifted to $250,000 this year and the Hayes camp will again be well represented. David Hayes conceded that it was a bit too early to nominate a Pakenham Cup candidate, but the stable would be represented. Last year the stable not only won the Cup, but also saluted with Snitzson, Mihany and Grande Rosso, who have all gone on to bigger and better things. “We will wait until the Flemington carnival is over and pick a (Pakenham Cup) horse out after that,” he said. “That’s what we did last year and we will do that again.”

Hayes said he was a fan of Racing.com Park and would start building on the two trainer allotments next year, with a view to using it to educate younger horses and house others to race in the Pakenham-

Cranbourne area. “We had a great day at the Cup last year and the club will just keep growing,” he said. “I think that, as the years go by, it will be a big part of our business plan.”

Betting giant Sportsbet has thrown its weight behind the Pakenham Cup, coming on as major sponsor. Having already secured the naming rights to night racing and a race at every meeting across the season at Pakenham last season, Sportsbet has experienced the value and increased its investment with the club by adding a 2500m feature race of-

fering $250,000 in prizemoney, up $50,000 on last year. The Sportsbet Pakenham Cup meeting will run on Saturday 9 December with full metropolitan status and total prizemoney edging towards the $1 million mark. “Sportsbet have been the real innovators in the corporate bookmaking market and having them back us by adding the Pakenham Cup to their stable,

on top of the existing night racing partnership is sensational,” said the PRC’s business development manager Wade Calderwood. “After a very successful Pakenham Cup event last December, where the race day was the club’s first stand-alone metropolitan status meeting, the PRC is planning on delivering an even greater event for racegoers on 9 December this year.”

On track for the world’s food Food Truck Carnival Co. is thrilled to announce that the inaugural Pakenham Food Truck Carnival is coming to Pakenham Racecourse this spring, serving up tasty treats from Melbourne’s finest food trucks for the local community to enjoy. Running from Friday 20 October to Sunday 22 October, the three-day carnival will offer a selection of mouth-watering international dishes as well as a range of entertainment, including live music, amusement rides, carnival games, kids’ activities and even eating competitions. Event organiser Danny Grant said the Pakenham Food Truck Carnival was part of a range of carnivals to be held across Victoria over summer. “We attracted 450,000 people to last year’s summer carnival run and thought it would be an awesome event to bring to other communities across Melbourne’s outskirts,” Mr Grant said. “It’s a great opportunity for locals to experience a range of cuisines that aren’t normally available. “We are trying to build a breath-taking carnival atmosphere for people of all ages to enjoy. People can sit back and enjoy their delicious food with an ice-cold beer, jump on one of the rides or maybe watch some balloon-twisters and stilt walk-

Owners Marty and Anna Eppel love bringing a piece of their culture to Melbourne. “Since my family relocated in the ‘70s we have never seen anywhere else try and recreate

these amazing steak sandwiches!” Take your tastebuds on a trip around the world with a range of cuisines to choose from including Indian, Spanish, Taiwanese, Greek, Italian, Korean, Brazilian and more. To bring a bit of extra magic to the Cardinia community, the event is free to enter.

Some of the region’s best food and wine is set to be showcased this Caulfield Cup Eve as the Pakenham Racing Club introduces its brand-new dining experience; Wine, Dine and Equine. Taking place on 20 October at the Pakenham Racing Club, the night will consist of a fivecourse degustation menu with matching wines sourced from local Gippsland suppliers. As business development manager at Pakenham Racing Club Wade Calderwood explained, the night is a mix of new and existing Pakenham Racing Club sponsors and suppliers, and is perfectly timed to launch spring racing in the South-East. “Pakenham Racing Club was seeking a way to showcase the high calibre of local and regional produce suppliers and the concept of putting together a multi-course degustation menu matched with fine wines on its feature Friday race night proved a very popular choice,” Mr Calderwood said. “Having secured support from businesses such as O’Connors, Red Gem Packers, Nine Mile Fresh, Schreurs and Sons, Cannibal Creek and Gippsland Cheese; it’s made it an exciting challenge for executive chef Tony Carter of Wise Choice to design and deliver a variety of delicious courses.” While local award-winning

Entertainment off the track Club Officer venue manager Sasha Bogdanov explained, starting at 7.30pm, there are great prizes and lots of fun for local residents to get involved. “Cocktail nights have also been a huge hit; with many new patrons coming along on Fridays to enjoy a wide range of different cocktails at the great price of $10 each. These nights run every Friday from 5pm to 9pm,” Sasha said. “And with the bistro at Club Officer proving to be extremely popular since the venue opened in June last year, advance bookings are recommended, while a number of weekly meal deal specials are offered.” Additionally, each week both venues hold their special members nights, with major cash prizes and consolation draws up for grabs. There’s action and entertainment both on and off the track this spring racing season with the Cardinia Club and Club Officer packed with events for the whole family. As Cardinia Club venue manager Lou Fleming explained, from live racing and sport action to Morning Melodies, the Cardinia Club has become a must-visit among the Pakenham community. “Recently, the popularity of live sport such as the boxing and AFL finals have seen the venue packed to the rafters with patrons enjoying the big screens and great atmosphere,” Lou said. “Now with live English Premier League games, Spring Racing Carnival and the cricket, Cardinia Club will once again be the number one sporting venue in Pakenham to watch live sport.” The club’s Morning Melodies hits the right note with many senior members and guests. Held at 10.30am on the first Thursday of each month, the special show and lunch deals are a sell-out, so pre-booking is strongly recommended for these great singalong shows. Over at Club Officer, Tuesday nights have seen a great response with a loyal following attending the weekly Quizzame electronic quiz show. As

Metro’s worst Deegan’s back in business By Bonny Burrows Deegan Cooper is one happy fisher. After breaking his last rod during an accident where a toddler rode over it while he was fishing at Lakeside, the 14-year-old was crushed. “I had just got it for my birthday,” Deegan said. Mum Raylene posted a message on the Lakeside Locals Facebook page as a warning to others, after a similar accident had happened to another child. “Just had my son come home from fishing at the lake after a child ran over his fishing road on their bike and snapped it in half while he was helping his mate reel a fish in. Lesson learnt but also a warning to others as another guy had the same thing happen to them today too,” she wrote. To their surprise, Adam Davey, owner of Compleat Angler Pakenham, commented and offered to replace the rod free of charge. Deegan said he was overjoyed. “I wasn’t really expecting it at all, I’m really happy,” he said. Deegan and his mother expressed their thanks to Adam for his “unbelievable generosity”. Deegan Cooper’s first catch on the new rod, which was also his biggest catch yet in Lakeside. Picture: CONTRIBUTED

Commuters on the Pakenham train line are being “left stranded”, with just 86.5 per cent of its services running to time. Statistics revealed by Public Transport Victoria on 10 October reveal that despite improvement, the Pakenham line remains the worst Metro train service for punctuality. According to the data, 91 per cent of Pakenham line services ran to time in September compared to 86 per cent in July. This was not the lowest September average, with the Craigieburn line running to time on just 90.0 per cent of services. However, the 12-month average ending September 2017 was the lowest in the state with just 86.5 per cent of the line’s total services making schedule. Bass MP Brian Paynter said commuters weren’t happy. “With reliability continuing to fall on the Pakenham line, commuters are left stranded on train stations unable to get to work,” Mr Paynter said. He said locals wanted reliable and safe public transport to get to work and access education. To achieve this, he said, upgrades were needed. “Removing our level crossings and upgrading the signalling would certainly help and yet repeated calls on this government have been ignored,” Mr Paynter said. “Once again this citycentric Andrews Government has failed people living in the South-East.” Public Transport Victoria CEO Jeroen Weimar said

September saw overall punctuality on Metro train services jump to 93.8 per cent. He said this exceeded the new target of 92.5 per cent, to be introduced later this year. “We’re seeing a continuing trend of better punctuality on our metropolitan trains, and with stronger contracts being introduced later this year we expect Metro to continue to provide a better service for our passengers,” Mr Weimar said. “This is the first full month of the new Metro timetable, with 30 extra weekly services providing room for an additional 27,000 passenger trips at the busiest times of the day.” A State Government spokesperson did not comment on the statistics. However, they said the government was “getting on with the job of building the Metro Tunnel, introducing bigger high capacity Metro trains and removing 12 level crossings between Caulfield and Dandenong to boost the capacity and reliability of the Pakenham line.” Metro Trains spokesman Marcus Williams said the organisation would continue to work with PTV and the government to deliver more punctual services, more often for passengers with more maintenance and major network upgrades. “Performance again improved on the Pakenham line in September with punctuality reaching a 12-month high,” Mr Williams said. “We are investing more than $1 million each working day on maintenance and renewals, which will increase more than 30 per cent under our new contract from later this year.”

Festival of the good time By Bonny Burrows India’s stunning Festival of Lights is coming to Pakenham. Diwali, or Deepavali as it is otherwise known, is a five-day festival celebrated each autumn in the Northern Hemisphere to mark the Hindi New Year. Locally, the celebration will be marked on 21 October with a family fun day concluded by a spectacular fireworks display. Event organiser Aanchal Meshram said despite the festival being a traditionally Indian celebration, the Pakenham festival was open to all. “Diwali in India is like Christmas here. Families and friends get together and celebrate the victory of good over evil. There is lot of food, colour, sweets, lights and fireworks,” Ms Meshram said. “It’s basically showcasing Indian tradition to the locals. We invite everyone from every background to join in celebrations, to celebrate multiculturalism. “There’s free entry and then people can enjoy children’s rides, food stalls - not just Indian, Indian goods, and live music.” Ms Meshram said it was a big deal to this year run the festival with the fireworks display. Fireworks were an important aspect of the event, she said. “It’s a very big thing, our culture has celebrated it on a smaller scale in Cardinia and Casey but this is the first time it will be on this scale with fireworks,” Ms Meshram said.

Dance the night away at the Diwali Festival. 173826 The festival will be held on 21 October at PB Ronald Reserve, Pakenham from 6pm to 9pm. The fireworks display is scheduled for between 8.30pm and 9.30pm and residents are asked to make sure their pets are safe and secure during that time. Guns seized in blitz after shooter’s licence expires

Cranbourne is one step closer to turning the old Cranbourne pool site into a cinema and entertainment complex. City of Casey manager statutory planning and building services Duncan Turner said council received a report addressing the vegetation on-site in Grant Street from the applicant in the past couple of weeks, and referred it to Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP). “DELWP has consented to the application being made on Crown land. Council now has a complete application and will work to advance the planning assessment and make a decision as quickly as possible.” In July, 2017 Cranbourne News reported TM Design Group was the frontrunner for the development. Council’s approval for the application comes after waiting for the applicant to provide further information to enable an assessment of the application, including a report addressing the vegetation on-site.

Police seized four firearms from a Pakenham man with an expired firearms licence during a police blitz. The man was busted during a three-day operation targeting firearm storage compliance, ending Sunday, which saw Cardinia police complete 80 checks of firearm storage locations. Weapons were seized from the 54-year-old, whose firearm licence had allegedly expired, and he later was interviewed by police. He is expected to be charged on summons with various firearm offences. Sergeant Brad Johnstone said despite the incident, it was pleasing that almost all of the inspections which took place across Cardinia saw no issues identified. “We know the vast majority of firearm licence holders are responsible and understand the serious responsibility which comes with firearm ownership,” he said.

Nevertheless, Sgt Johnstone warned firearm owners that they always needed to be vigilant. “We are reminding firearm licence holders to ensure their firearms storage arrangements are compliant with their obligations under the Firearms Act,” he said. “Never leave items unsecured at properties or in vehicles. “Families of deceased estates and licence holders with impending licence renewals should seek advice from police if they have questions about their obligations.” Sgt Johnstone said police regularly carried out inspections across Victoria to improve community safety by ensuring that firearms were being stored in a compliant manner. “Rigorous assessments are undertaken to ensure only fit and proper individuals are granted firearm licences,” he said.

A man with a string of suspended driving offences and found with up to $30,000 worth of meth in his car has been placed on a community corrections order. Matthew Christopher Edwards was found with 40 grams of ‘ice’ after his car was intercepted speeding at 101 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on South Gippsland Highway, Dandenong South, on 10 July, a court heard. Edwards told police at the time that he had a NSW driver’s licence but couldn’t produce it. He then gave a false name and address to police. During a search, his suspended Victorian driver’s licence was found in his wallet. His mobile phone contained several messages relating to drug trafficking, prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Kate Kirk said. Edwards was caught driving suspended another four times in Mulgrave, Melbourne, Hallam and Narre Warren between May and July, the court was told. On 2 September, he was found with two prohibited butterfly knives when arrested with a known criminal associate in a car in Narre Warren in the early hours of the morning. He told police after an ensuing strip search: “I don’t trust you. I don’t respect you. I won’t tell you anything.”

Edwards, who sat with his wife of 12 years in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 10 October, had gone in a downward spiral since losing his job in March, the court heard. He had also been under strain due to his father’s death and his own ulcerated leg. Defence lawyer Sarah Pratt said it had been a short period of offending, without prior criminal history apart from driving offences. Edwards had since landed work. Imprisonment should be the last resort, Ms Pratt said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Edwards’ remarks to police showed he “didn’t know when to pull his head in”. “It’s clear you’re leading two different lives, two different personalities. “You’ve got stability, but then look at your behaviour driving cars when you shouldn’t be driving.” He estimated the drug’s street value to be between $20,000-30,000. He said Edwards was on the “cusp” of imprisonment, but opted for a longer than usual CCO. Edwards, who had spent three days in remand custody, was put on a two-year supervised CCO with 350 hours of unpaid work as well as drug and mental health treatment and judicial monitoring. He was disqualified from driving for 16 months.

Jail term for faker By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has pretended to have been kidnapped and tortured in an elaborate plot against his business partner, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court has heard. Christopher McKai, of Endeavour Hills, had earlier struck a deal with the 52-year-old male victim to provide eight motorcycles at a highly discounted price. However, after being paid $10,500 for the goods, McKai failed to provide them. He told the victim they went missing, on the same day that the victim asked for the paperwork. The victim then received texts from McKai’s mobile phone, from an apparent third party, that McKai had been kidnapped over a missing firearm, the court was told on 9 October. “He is going to die” and “you’re the next one”, the stream of messages read. The victim rang McKai’s phone. An unknown male told the victim that he’d stabbed McKai, who would be killed if the firearm wasn’t returned. The victim, who had no knowledge of the weapon, reported the matter to police - which led to a costly and unnecessary Armed Crime Squad major investigation. McKai was located “safe and well” in his home by police, arrested and interviewed at Cranbourne police station. McKai also faced charges over thefts of motor vehicles as well as failing to stop and exchange details

after crashing into the back of a car in Endeavour Hills on 27 March, and again in Victoria Street, Melbourne, on 24 June. He had never held a driver’s licence, the court heard. McKai’s lawyer said the victim and the accused were both involved in a “dodgy deal” with a lot of “back story and factors” not presented to the court. McKai had previously committed 145 prior thefts and obtaining property by deception offences since 2008, and served two jail terms, the court heard. He’d been victimised and threatened while in jail, the lawyer said. “There’s not much I can say to mitigate his role given his priors.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen described McKai as “quite an intelligent individual - potentially” whose crimes with varied levels of sophistication were a “real concern”. “You have a significant prior criminal history. “I’d have to be guarded as to his prospects of rehabilitation.” He noted McKai’s diagnosed depression, but his lack of engagement with counselling and treatment. McKai was jailed for 21 months, with a non-parole period of 14 months. He was also fined $1500 and disqualified from driving for two years. He was ordered to pay restitution costs of $4958.40 to Victoria Police, and to pay $10,500 compensation to the victim.

State finalist for school’s Koorie plan Berwick College has been shortlisted in two categories in this year’s Victorian Education Excellence Awards. The college is among the topthree finalists for Outstanding Koorie Education and Outstanding Education Support Team. It was recognised for its inclusive Marrung Aboriginal Education Plan - including a dedicated Koorie education section on the school website, an annual award for Koorie students and a commitment to Bridging the Gap. Principal Kerri Bolch said the school’s Koorie students had grown as young people under the program, “proudly active in their Koorie heritage and their community” . The school’s ConnectED program was nominated under the education support team category.

It is led by four social workers, a chaplain and a registered nurse looking after students’ holistic wellbeing and mental health. “Our caring and highly effective Wellbeing Team professionally support students who experience barriers to learning because of issues relating to mental health, homelessness, behaviour, grief and friendship,” Ms Bolch said. “This is the second year our staff have been Victorian Education Excellence Award Finalists, reflecting our continued investment into our local families and the wider community.” The awards highlight exemplary education and innovation - including staff who go “beyond the call of duty” - in government schools in the state. Winners will be announced on 27 October.

Letters Emperor’s new clothes We’ve all heard the story of the emperor’s new clothes. Telling the truth was something the officials and those in high places were not able to do. It took a small child to break the deception. It reminds me of what is occurring in our nation right now. We are being told by the politicians and those in high places that redefining the definition of marriage will have no consequences. We have been told this by Mr Turnbull, Mr Shorten, Mr Pyne, Senator Wong, Mr Alan Joyce and so the long list goes on. And we are not even allowed to have sensible a discussion about this without being called a bigot, homophobe and worse. This raises some very big red flags for me … red being very significant! Do we need a child to break down the furphies we are being told? There are huge consequences if the nation changes the Marriage Act. We only have to look at other nations that have made the change and see how this has changed these nations. Canada has had same-sex marriage legalised for 12 years and just recently in Ontario they passed a bill that has struck out the terms “mother and father” from law and legislated for a child to have up to four legal parents. Is this what we want for our children and grandchildren? Already we are seeing some frightening things happen even before there is a change. Julian Porteous, the Catholic Archbishop taken to court in Tasmania for actually telling his congregation (and no-one else) that marriage is between a man and a woman. And this is before any changes are made to the Federal Marriage Act. Only one example of free speech being shut down at a rapid rate in the nation. Then we have Father’s Day ads refused to being aired, people losing jobs and being forced from positions on boards just because they believe in traditional marriage and say so … all in the past 12 months and this is here in Australia! Loss of freedom of speech, freedom of religion and what will be taught in our schools are all very serious consequences that will occur if the Marriage Act is changed. To those who are yet to vote, please do and make sure you are very thoughtfully indicating your response to the question we have been asked. Look carefully Australia … the emperor is wearing no clothes. Jane Foreman, Berwick.

A huge number of pre-loved and new books were on offer at a book fair held at St Andrew's Uniting Church, Berwick on Saturday 7 October. Rob Salvatore is right - it is potentially dangerous and not just for motorcyclists. Obviously Ray Peterson has never ridden or driven on tram tracks either - rutting the asphalt surface causes you to over-correct and increases your chance of hitting “permanent" concrete barriers. Thanks for the signs and driving to conditions Ray. What used to be a 45-minute drive in recent years to say Box Hill has now become a 1.5-

hour journey and that’s not in peak hour either. No doubt some students of risk management will be wanting to use this project as an example of what not to do in their thesis. VicRoads and Fulton Hogan would do well to revisit the idea behind their risk analysis for this project, including its appropriate management, co-ordination and timely maintenance and rectification of identified risks. My best wishes go out to the long-suffering public who have to go about their lives and have to navigate this never ending nightmare story. Charles Harris, Pakenham.

One can only empathise with Todd Curtis (lead article, News, 28 September by Cam Lucadou-Wells). Why anyone either wants to ride or drive the nightmare that is now the Monash Freeway from Cardinia Road onwards to the city must have some sort of psychological death wish or are oblivious to chaos and confusion. Am I surprised that VicRoads and Fulton Hogan are playing pass the parcel? No. They are responsible for: a deteriorating road surface for all users, a route inundated with conflicting signs - their attempt to justify safety, inordinately long works (now well into a second year - their contract must be on a monthly basis), a proliferation of road line markings which in some places converge, merge and cross especially which on dark or wet days have lead to numerous near misses, tail-enders, side swipes and “road rage". Restriction signs in areas where there is no work being done or where work is five to 10 metres away from what used to be the breakdown road, protruding flexible conduit, poorly arranged bollards (with graffiti “tags" readily visible), recently and original installed noise barriers with damaged panels, poorly positioned temporary bollards placed by “contractors“ that result in traffic being reduced to one lane with their “work" (if you can use that word when you see four or five blokes in high-vis watching another driving a piece of equipment metres from the road) well out of traffic and harm's way, trucks and cars travelling in convoy especially in the outer lane such that you can’t lane change, fluctuating speed signs for no apparent reason - great for stop start cha-cha style motoring. Banks littered with construction materials and items, obscured/damaged direction and warning signs, concrete humps with projections in service lanes, incomplete works left

Socially speaking On Wednesday 4 October the CranbourneBerwick Facebook Page shared the story of a Cranbourne East family who won a twomonth fight to free their impounded dog Sophie, after Casey Council dramatically dropped allegations that the dog had killed neighbouring sheep. The eight-year-old rottweiler, hobbled by a damaged hip, joyfully reunited with Allan and Angela Duffield and their six children after spending weeks on a potential death row. The story sparked great relief from readers. Here is how they reacted online. Angela Duffield: Thankyou to everyone. We are very pleased with the outcome of all this. We are all so happy to have her home and Sophie is happy to be back home. It took a couple of days for her to eat and

actually come and sit with us, but she is getting a lot better as you can see. Chris Sellers: I have been following this debacle. So, so happy for you to have your four-legged family member back. Mirabelle Bielinski: Council really need to take a good hard look at themselves! Jan Riley: So very pleased to read the fantastic news of Sophie’s freedom. She will treasure the time with you all again. Take care everyone. Nicky Steve Thomas: That’s great news. Jackie Blowes: Great to hear she is home. Sandrina Gregory: Awesome news. Donna Lansdowne: That’s fantastic. Claire Hoskins: About bloody time! Betty Hannagan Jan will be happy Nicky. Carol Carr: Great news.

Melbourne Water has defended its wildlife welfare practices during its works to create a wetland at Troups Creek West reserve, Narre Warren. Nearby resident Ray Darbritz said he’d seen fish trapped and gasping in pools of “10 inches of water” as a result of the retarding basin being drained and infilled. “They can be seen swimming close to the water surface which is a behaviour I have not seen before. “They would be distressed as the water is significantly lower and much, much smaller. “The water body is also a lot more shallow so the body of water will be a lot hotter.” Melbourne Water has hired an ecologist and an environmental ad-

viser to ensure that aquatic species and birds are “appropriately protected and relocated”. “A large number of European Carp have been found in the wetland area,” Melbourne Water project manager Jason Brown said. “Carp are considered a noxious species under the Fisheries Act and cannot be relocated, so these fish will be euthanised in a humanely manner by an ecologist.” Mr Darbritz said Melbourne Water had only acted to euthanise the carp after he raised his concerns this month. He also heard of reports of pelican having to be freed by workers after it was stuck in the muddy banks. “I don’t know how you manage adult and young pelicans. How do

Troups Creek West is drained during the wetlands creation. Picture: SUPPLIED you catch them and relocate them? “There is a bulldozer pushing mud in a wetland area. It’s a huge disturbance. “I don’t know how you can work in wetlands without impacting on wildlife. There’s not a chance in hell.” The upgrade is designed to help

the wetland better filter stormwater, which flows through the local drainage system and into Port Phillip. Melbourne Water also states that the increased habitat complexity will support more native animals. The project includes new drainage lines, silt removal and a new pedestrian footbridge. Mr Brown said works to protect the retarding basin’s embankment were almost complete, with topsoiling and seeding of the area to come. Most of the upgrade will be finished by Christmas. “Once the grass is at a suitable length, fencing will be removed from this area and it will be reopened to the public.” Vegetation would be planted within the wetland in early 2018.

Candidate relocates to Casey By Cam Lucadou-Wells Labor’s newly endorsed candidate for Narre Warren South is set to ward off calls that he’s not a local by moving into the Casey-based electorate. National Union of Workers state secretary Gary Maas told Star News he plans to soon move from St Kilda East into a local rental property, with a view of buying a home if he wins the seat in the 2018 State Election. Though growing up in Springvale, Mr Maas, 47, admitted he was a newbie to the area. But he was willing to move in and to listen to the community. The Australian-born son of Sri Lankan migrants plans to meet with migrant community groups and

schools as a starting familiarisation point. “One thing is I’ve got to be able to speak for this community and find out what’s affecting them. “I plan to make myself available over the next 13 months and hopefully after that as well.” Mr Maas, a former music teacher and lawyer - as well as a drummer in a “dad’s band”, has a platform of secure jobs, affordable houses, roads, education and representing union members. “People wake up in the morning, and they get the kids ready for school. They want to ensure that their kids are going to a good school, and that there’s a good result at the end of their education. “When they get in the car on the

Mr Maas said to call him a unionist was a mere label. He said people should consider what union officials

By Peter Douglas La Trobe MP Jason Wood has engaged in a media offensive amid the biannual Council of Australian Governments meeting, spruiking his plans to toughen pre-emptive terrorism powers. As Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, state ministers and local government leaders prepared to table issues at the 5 October meeting, Mr Wood took to various national media outlets - as well as social media - to raise the profile of his proposed changes. Most significant among the proposals is giving police powers to request court ordered restrictions on any person of interest. This would include enforcing counselling and curfews, restricting internet usage and any associations with other extremists. In addition, foreigners on a visa would be given one month to enrol in a de-radicalisation program, or face being deported. Mr Wood said the threat of terrorism cells being active in the region was a real concern, particularly in the south of his electorate, which includes Gembrook-Cockatoo, Officer, Beaconsfield, Berwick and Narre Warren. “At present, it’s a wait and see approach - police don’t have the resources to constantly monitor anyone they have serious concerns about,” Mr Wood said. “We don’t have those kinds of resources in Australia. “Under these changes, these people of interest would face a court and potentially face community protection orders. “It’s no good waiting until they’ve committed a terrorist attack. I believe this will make a positive difference to Australians.” Mr Wood is a former police officer and member of the counter-terrorism unit. He said the preventative detention legislation

Jason Wood is calling for more powers to fight terrorism. - as it stands - is inadequate and further powers need to be enacted. Mr Wood has cited the case of Abdul Benbrika, who was convicted of leading a terrorist network and is believed to have considered targeting the MCG. Previously, Benbrika was ordered out of Australia three times, but eventually allowed to stay in the country. Mr Wood spoke on Sky News, Channel 7 and wrote a detailed opinion piece in the Herald Sun. Reports have indicated terrorism is high on the COAG agenda, including making it an offence to possess instructional terrorism material and to make terrorism hoaxes.

They’ll spin you a yarn By Cam Lucadou-Wells Six of Casey’s elders reveal the extraordinariness of their lives in a one-off performance, Tale Tellers, at Bunjil Place. The ‘tale tellers’ made their homes in Casey from far-flung corners of the world - New Zealand, England, Fiji, Tasmania - and a little closer nearby. One was a Fijian Indian urged by his parents to give back to the world, who worked with Maori youth in New Zealand. He is now a film-maker and radio presenter driven to reach a wider audience. Another was one of seven kids who travelled down from Deniliquin, photographed lying on a mattress in a back of a ute gazing at stars above Swanston Street in the 1970s. She is now working with children as an Aboriginal co-operative leader. Actress and director Evelyn Krape, with the help of oral historian Dr Vivienne Nicholson, scripted the stories. She will join the six on stage with an Afghani performing group, leading them like a pied piper

as they tell their stories. Many of their life stories were forged by profound moments of tragedy, Ms Krape says. “What’s driving these tale tellers has been a determination and resilience, and to contribute to the community.” Ms Krape has staged a number of tale teller performances. Audiences are inevitably moved. You will hear “sighs of recognition” from the crowd during the show, Ms Krape says. “Everyone finds something that makes them think ‘Oh my God, that’s my story’.” And for the elders - that generation that often feels invisible, is wracked with ill-health and isolated - this is a chance to be embraced. “We’re celebrating their lives,” Ms Krape says. “It’s extraordinary when the grandchildren and great-grandchildren are in the audience and they see their gran or their pa. “They have seen them as these ordinary, frail people and it’s marvellous. It’s a great feeling.” Tale Tellers is at Bunjil Place Studio, Magid Drive, Narre Warren on 3 November, 1-2.30pm. Tickets: $7, including afternoon tea.

Doveton pool’s future remains in limbo until Casey Council embarks on another round of community consultation next year. The City of Casey is reviewing the options and opportunities to upgrade the facility in line with community needs, and “maximise what the site can achieve”. Councillor Wayne Smith told the council’s meeting on Tuesday 3 October that the concept of closing the pool had been raised over the years and “never been received well.” He said council would ultimately like to make the pool indoor heated. “If we can attract some state and federal funding that would be

our aim. “Doveton is a very long established community and they some of the elderly people who don’t use the pool would fight to death to keep that pool so it’s very important to improve it,” he said. He said council was looking at revitalising the water play area. “It’s not adventurous enough. We want to expand it and make it more interesting. And make that a destination so you’re not just coming just because of the pool. Young families would come because of that play area. “We need to do something to revitalise it. We need to work collaboratively with the community,” Cr Smith said.

Growing well with the can-do mindset

Principal Anne Martin and award winners at the end of year Graduation Ceremony.

College’s plan Hallam Senior College staff aim to provide all students with the maximum opportunity for personal and academic growth in a supportive environment, one specially designed for students in their later years of secondary education. Hallam Senior College offers an extensive range of study options in Year 10, VCE, VET and VCAL that enable staff to personalise a student’s timetable through a focused program approach. The Year 10 program includes a choice of more than 30 electives as well as specialist programs in sport, building and

design, visual arts and STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths). Students are at the centre of all thinking, planning and actions. Staff aim to ensure that they provide positive learning experiences for every student in a young adult environment. With highly experienced staff ensuring quality of delivery across all subjects, students are treated as young adults with staff-student relationships based on mutual respect, cooperation and a focus on the common goal - learning. In a young adult learning en-

vironment students are encouraged to take personal responsibility for their learning. “The relationships forged with students and their families are critical elements of a student’s success at this important stage of their learning,” said Principal Anne Martin. “Hallam Senior College values relationships built on respect and responsibility where the relationships between people, learning and the environment frame our actions.” Contact Hallam Senior College on 9703 1266 for more information or to book a tour of the college.

At St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School, learning is about more than just what takes place in the classroom. From early years right through to Year 12, St Paul’s encourages a growth mindset and an understanding that with the right attitude anything is possible. The school has pastoral care structures so that each child is well known and can develop meaningful relationships with adults and other students. The addition of Trust Mapping, an online survey mapping tool that identifies students who are not feeling connected, ensures the school has a proactive approach to education in regard to social and emotional issues that typically arise in adolescence. Year 7 students take part in an extended transition program during Year 6 that includes meeting senior staff in enrolment interviews, receiving an individual primary school visit from the Head of Year 7, attending Friendship Morning in July to meet future peers, and a three-day orientation program in December. In Term 1, they attend a camp run by Peer Support Leaders who guide, mediate, support and encourage students, helping them to feel con-

Year 7s also have the opportunity to choose electives from their first year of secondary school. Based at the unique Miller’s Factory Year 9 Centre, St Paul’s Year 9 program is different to traditional schooling and is designed specifically for students of this age. It is aimed at promoting student engagement, active enquiry, autonomy, personal and social responsibility and independent learning - all attributes which equip students with an

Currently more than 90 students travel to St Paul’s from Cardinia Shire on two St Paul’s buses that includes a supportive ‘buddy’ program for the first weeks of a student’s travel. AGENCY TAKES HOME REIV AWARD FACEY Industrial Commercial was recognised for innovative marketing, winning Best Marketing Campaign by a Medium Agency at the 2017 Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) Commercial and Industrial Marketing Awards. The agency, which won the award for Best Office Site Sales Campaign under $20,000 at last year’s REIV awards, has been celebrating 100 years in real estate this year. The winning entry was an Expression of Interest campaign for a multi-listing site at 1485 South Gippsland Highway and 1-4, 13-27 and 29 Cameron Street, Cranbourne. The unique site comprised five buildings with four established tenancies and a separate land parcel ready for development. The properties were marketed as available to purchase together or separately. A multi-channel marketing campaign targeted at investors and developers resulted in 85 inquiries and a number of expressions of interest resulting in the sale of all five properties for a combined sale price of $3,652,000 to a private investor. “We aimed and succeeded in selling the properties as a package, pushing the appeal of a strong existing income while the buyer planned development of the additional parcel of land,” said Facey Industrial Commercial’s Richard O’Callaghan. The campaign included a mix of traditional and digital advertising with highlights including a social media campaign on Facebook and LinkedIn generating over 200 clicks to the website and a drone video promoted via internet

Kids do their blocks to learn Education

matters ROB KELLY multimedia teacher at Berwick Lodge Primary School

In 2017, Lego is far more than a simple building block to be used and manipulated by children. Lego has stepped out of the playground and into the real world of education focusing on science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The brick’s incredible flexibility and durability makes it the perfect material for teaching the key concepts of STEM in classrooms around the world. There are now many Lego clubs and groups in existence in Australia too, including RoboCup Junior Australia - a project-oriented educational initiative that supports local, regional and international robotic events for young students. In this friendly Lego robotics tournament, students are asked to design, build and program a robot to perform in one, two or three tournament categories - Dance, Rescue and/or Soccer. A group of enthusiastic students from Berwick Lodge Primary School recently attended the tournament at Mt Clear College in Ballarat, Victoria. The 16 volunteers from Grades 4, 5 and 6, participated in the junior dance and rescue tournament categories. Teacher Nick Pryor said: “The kids were given the opportunity to work with experienced coaches which enriched their skill set - both in problem solving and design.”

The students participating in the dance category had to combine Lego technology and the Performing Arts by programming a robot to dance to a soundtrack of their choice - the girls choosing Taylor Swifts’ ‘Bad Blood’ and ‘Shake It Off’ and the boys’ dance group to Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’ and “Blame It On The Boogie”. The robot had motorised limbs and the students were encouraged to give their robots real names and personalities. The two groups performed a tightly choreographed dance routine along with their robots. Consideration was given to all elements of their performance, including costumes, music and routine. Across the hall, the rescue robot tournament was also underway. In this category, robots are programmed by the students to follow a winding black line on a series of tiles. On the way, the robot encounters obstacles, bridges and short cut opportunities that is promised to challenge the most intrepid programmer. After navigating through the randomly selected path, the robot arrives at a green coloured area which indicates a chemical spill. While the clock is ticking, the robot must find “the victim” (an aluminium can) before pushing it out of the quicksand square to safety. The challenge tests the students understanding of how a robot’s design needs to be integrated with it’s program to complete the task. Lego’s potential as a teaching and learning tool in schools is growing. While Robocup is one example of how Lego can be used, it can also be utilised in a number of different curriculum areas within education in a playful way. After all, Lego (a Danish phrase) does Lego is a great way of teaching children about the STEM subjects. mean “play well”.

For best start in life

Enrolments at St Clare’s Primary School are growing rapidly.

Holistic education State-of-the-art facilities, passionate staff, a genuine sense of self-worth and a clear vision based on Gospel values. This is what St Clare’s Primary School in Officer has to offer. The new school opened in 2015, and enrolments at St Clare’s are growing rapidly. As part of the parish of St Patrick’s in Pakenham, the school is on the same site as the Parish Early Learning Centre and the Officer campus of St Francis Xavier College. For those in the catchment area, this provides a seamless transition from early childhood to primary through to secondary education.

The master plan for St Clare’s has been carefully constructed to meet the growing needs of the area. Further building works have begun this month, and will be ready for the beginning of the 2018 school year. Each learning space has been designed to provide a rich environment conducive to relevant, meaningful learning. Areas are spacious and well-resourced so as to meet the needs of the 21st century learner. Student achievement is measured not only by academic growth but also by the emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing as well.

Being part of faith-filled community instils students with a sense of identity, a feeling of belonging and, above all, a powerful sense of self-worth. The school strives to create an environment of mutual respect and support among staff, parents and students and maintain the flexibility and openmindedness required to deal with a constantly changing educational environment. School tours are held weekly or by alternative arrangements. Please phone to book a tour on 5940 6777 or email enrolments@stclaresofficer.catholic. edu.au.

Early childhood educator and activist Tamika Hicks is lifting the bar to early education in Pakenham. Her highly trained professionals at Cardinia Lakes Early Learning Centre have a joint philosophy that focuses on getting children ‘Ready for Kinder, Ready for School and Set for Life’. “A child’s first five years sets them up for lifelong learning. That is why our focus is teaching children through interest based play, by intentionally teaching them the skills needed to give them the best start in life,” Ms Hicks said. “Research shows that by the time a child starts formal schooling their educational trajectory is set. “Children who receive a quality early childhood education get on average 10 to 20 points higher on their NAPLAN scores. “Our aim is to have children heading off to primary school ready for success.” Ms Hicks, who has been an activist and advocate for early childhood for 20 years, worked as an adviser to Minister Jenny Mikakos who announced $202.1 million funding for early childhood education in last year’s state budget. Ms Hicks said the funding would bring groundbreaking change to kindergartens and early years’ services. With Cardinia Lakes ELC located close to Hollins Chil-

Early childhood educator and activist Tamika Hicks. dren’s Centre, maternal child health services and the upcoming development of Pakenham East Primary School, children in the area are set to benefit from quality early learning. “Having worked on policy and a state budget under Minister Mikakos that delivered a result that will benefit so many of Victoria’s children is one of the highlights of my career so far,”

Ms Hicks said. “It shows the government’s commitment to the next generation. “Our vision is to be part of delivering those quality outcomes for the families and children of Pakenham.” Cardinia Lakes Early Learning Centre is open every day for tours and is now taking enrolments.

Clinic looks to fulfil potential When Renee O’Connor returned from the UK, where she had been working as a chiropractor in Scotland, she purchased a small chiropractic practice in semi-rural Victoria. The clinic consisted of a single room in a suite of offices that also serviced a conveyancer and lawyer. Fast forward 10 years and this month Dr O’Connor is celebrating a decade of practice in Pakenham with True Potential Chiropractic. No longer in that little room, the practice has grown with the suburb and now includes two more chiropractors, a friendly team of reception staff, and has been joined by In Fine Fettle Massage. Dr O’Connor believes she couldn’t have chosen a better place to start a practice. “The area has expanded rapidly over the last 10-15 years and the growth of young families in the area has been fabulous for the clinic,” she said. “I have loved seeing the young children who used to do drawings for me, turning into adults - getting their licence, first jobs, entering university. “It is so exciting to have been a part of their journey to health and wellbeing over the last 10 years.” In 2015 True Potential moved into its new, purpose-designed clinic at 176 Princes Highway and Dr O’Connor credits her team for the clinic’s growing reputation of providing friendly, professional care for locals. Fellow chiropractors, doctors Sally Cunningham and Rachel Duncan, complement the clinic’s focus on family healthcare, especially for antenatal, postnatal and paediatric care. The clinic’s chiropractic assistants, Robyn, Stacey and Rebecca, ensure the smooth running of the practice and provide the support for new patients to feel welcome. Ultimately, Dr O’Connor feels that it’s the “warm, genuine, easy going nature” of True Potential’s clients that have made the clinic what it

Dr Renee O’Connor is celebrating a decade of practice in Pakenham with True Potential Chiropractic. is, with word of mouth being the most effective advertising for the clinic. With this in mind, True Potential has an exciting announcement to make - the Pakenham business will be expanding to include a satellite clinic in Healesville in November/December. “I’d love to continue providing the highest level of customer service to our community,” Dr O’Connor said. “In the next 10 years, I’d love to see our team grow and incorporate other health care modalities. “I’m looking forward to growing and developing the Healesville practice into a thriving hub of excellence as well.” The clinic is located at 176 Princes Highway, Pakenham. Casey Council has called for a review of gambling regulations after Zagame’s Berwick Springs Hotel won approval for 10 extra poker machines. On 2 October, the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation found the proposal to increase the hotel’s poker machines from 95 to 105 passed the ‘no net detriment’ test. It instead found there were likely to be small, positive social and economic impacts. The decision follows the VCGLR’s recent approval of a Dan Murphy’s liquor super-barn in Cranbourne East, despite opposition from Casey Council and Victoria Police. Casey mayor Sam Aziz said the Gambling Regulation Act 2003 - as well as liquor control laws - needed to be reviewed to consider more broadly the views of the community and the “wider societal impacts” of gambling and alcohol. “Council is disappointed in the VCGLR’s decision; however, it was consistent with what the legislation asks the commission to consider.” The Berwick Springs venue is the fifth most lucrative pokies venue in the state, collecting $17.8 million in 2016-’17. At least $393,665 will be generated by the extra machines in the first 12 months. Some of that new expenditure will be associated with problem gambling, but there was only a low risk of an increase in problem gambling, the commission found. “The commission finds that the catchment area of the hotel exhibits low levels of socio-economic disadvantage and generally lower vulnerability to risks of problem gambling.” Cr Aziz said the council urged a precautionary approach to limit the impact of problem gambling on family violence rates - a link that was dismissed by the commission. He said the council would continue to advocate to the State Government to reduce harms from

gaming machines and to extend a cap limiting machine numbers in Casey. The commission put “nil-to-marginal” weight on opposition by City of Casey, a 274-name petition from the Alliance for Gambling Reform and individual submissions. This was due to a “relatively low” community response to the council’s survey on the issue, as well as many opponents not living in Casey and not specifically arguing about the application. Alliance for Gambling Reform board member Tom Cummings, of Berwick, led the community objections. “While not unexpected, this is an incredibly disappointing decision,” he said. “The VCGLR got this one badly wrong. “They are almost predisposed to accept the submission.” He cited the venue’s “huge profits” and the widespread harm of pokies addiction as reasons to knock back the application. “It’s never over. There’s the potential for someone to take it to VCAT (on appeal), which is a costly exercise.” Casey was lower than the metropolitan Melbourne average in gaming machine numbers and per-capita losses on pokies, the commission noted. The hotel’s surrounding area was not considered to be at significant levels of disadvantage, and the increased machines were only a “small proportional increase” in machines in Casey. Zagame’s tied up to $2.6 million of improvement works, including a larger bistro and relocated kids play area, to the proposal. The hotel also planned to install a community service booth with responsible gambling pamphlets. It pledged to increase its annual community contributions from $75,000 to $100,000, including a donation towards a part-time gambling support worker at Berwick Salvation Army. Zagame’s didn’t comment by deadline.

Lehman’s winning ton By Russell Bennett A practically flawless unbeaten century from Tooradin opener Russell Lehman delivered his side an impressive firstup victory over the reigning champions and West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA) Premier powerhouse Kooweerup at Denhams Road on Saturday. Impressive Kooweerup 16-year-old all-rounder Mitch Davey top-scored for his side after skipper Mark Cooper won the toss and elected to bat. Davey was unbeaten on 61, guiding the Demons to 7/220 from their 40 overs. But it was an unbeaten 132-run stand for the fourth wicket between Lehman (105 not out) and Josh Lownds (68 not out) that guided the visitors home as they reached 3/222 in the 38th over. The two were simply superb - giving a lesson in building an innings, but more importantly, capitalising with bog knocks in a crucial win. Tooradin’s talent as a core group has never been in question, but in the past there have been some questions surrounding their application - particularly with the bat. A few early wickets could have a snowball effect, but not on Saturday.

Lehman looked for runs in all corners of the ground, while Lownds used his feet superbly - particularly against the Demons slower bowlers. They stayed confident, and stuck to the task at hand - putting the responsibility of winning the game on to their own shoulders. At Cardinia, meanwhile, a new-look Bulls outfit brushed off the cobwebs and showed plenty of upside in the process of a composed win over Merinda Park; Pakenham was forced to toil hard for its win over Upper Beaconsfield at Toomuc Reserve; and Clyde began the new Premier season right where it left off on the final day of the last District season. Clyde lost just five wickets on the way to reaching 224 from their 40 overs with Gavin Britt (76 not out) and Shane Webster (52) top-scoring. In reply, new Emerald skipper Mitch Daley (58) notched a half-century of his own while Mitch Thomas (32) and Aaron Brooks (38 not out) also added valuable contributions with the willow, but it wasn’t enough as the home side was dismissed for 160 in 33 overs. In District, Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll broke a 33-game first XI losing streak dating back almost three years

Tooradin star Russell Lehman finished with 1/35 against the Demons, but it was with the bat that he really made his presence felt – recording a brilliant unbeaten century in reply to Kooweerup’s 7/220. 173655 Picture: ROB CAREW when the Marygoons brilliantly defeated Tooradin by four wickets at the Seagulls’ nest on Saturday. The boys from Nar Nar Goon last won a game back in Round 9 of the 2014/'15 season against Officer, when they defeated the Bullants by three wickets.

But a newly energised Marygoon outfit - featuring seven changes from its last game in 2016/'17 - sent the ‘Gulls in to bat in captain-coach Kyle Dorman’s first game for his new side. The home side posted a competitive 7/153 from its 40 overs, but the Marygoons (6/155) broke their drought with four wickets and 7.4 overs to play.

Gurpreet Bhamra, meanwhile, inspired Cranbourne Meadows to a crushing victory over Carlisle Park with an astonishing seven-wicket haul. In his first game for the Rebels, Bhamra skittled the Vikings with the figures of 7/23 off eight overs - including the first six scalps - with the home side ending the innings in just 24.4 overs and with 73 runs on the scoreboard. It took just 19 overs for the Rebels to chase down the lowly total, with former Kalgidhar batsman Sunny Paul (43 not out) enjoying his first outing with his new side. In other matches of the round, Devon Meadows easily accounted for newly relegated Pakenham Upper/Toomuc by seven wickets, with young batsman Nathan Worstelling (50 not out) scoring his maiden First XI half century, while Officer couldn’t quite reel in Clyde’s 196, falling just seven runs short. Cougars batsman Brett Reid unluckily fell for 99. Rounds 2 and 3 will be played this Saturday and Sunday from 1pm on both days in what will be the last batch of one-dayers until just before the Christmas break.

Mixed day for bowlers PAKENHAM BOWLS SATURDAY Pakenham One (Div 1) were away at the powerful Mulgrave Country Club where their opponents got the jump on them in the early stages of the match, putting their home ground advantage to good use and establishing a lead of 13 shots by the halfway mark. From that point Pakenham was well in the hunt, conceding only one more shot for the game. However they were unable to make up the early deficit and eventually went down by 14 shots, 69 to 83, and collected only two Pennant points. Best rink with a score of 22/18 was Chris Fox (S), Steve Bently (3), Terry McRedmond (2) and Ian Anderson (L). The Ones will be at home to Heathmont in Round 2. With the luxury of a first round game at home, Pakenham Two (Div 2) turned out on the fast Crowley Green in difficult windy conditions for what was expected to be a battle against former Division One side, Hampton Park. By afternoon tea the home side was in a good position, up on three of the four rinks and with a lead of 15 shots. When play resumed after the break the Lions maintained the pressure and eventually won by 23 shots, 84 to 61, with three rinks up, collecting 16 Pennant points. The one losing rink went down by only a single shot. Best rink was Gary Crowley (S), Jim Williams (3), Kevin Goonan (2) and Norm Box (L) with a 28/11 scorecard. The Twos are away to old foes Cranbourne in Round 2. Pakenham Three (Div 4) had the nearest away game on the calendar,

Geoff Van Vugt in action in his match against Gary Crowley. travelling just across town to Cardinia Waters. It was a close match all afternoon, and the Lions were up by only seven shots at the halfway mark. However they eventually won by 16 shots, 82/66, and with three winning rinks banked 16 Pennant points. Best rink with a score of 22 to 13 was Charles Harris (S), John Tarr (3), Trent Bedford (2) and Alan Waterson (L). This rink opened its account with a seven and was never headed from that point forward. The Threes have a home game against Mulgrave Country Club next round. In their first outing in Division Six, Pakenham Four were given a bit of a reality check at home by the visiting Keysborough outfit who had them behind by ten shots and down on three rinks at the half way point. However Pakenham fought back hard for the remainder of the game, eventually falling short in a heartbreaking finish to lose by just one

shot, 70 to 71. The architects of the fightback were John Hickman (S), John Coote (3), Annie Wetere (2) and Joan Montgomery (L) with a healthy score of 23 to 11. The Fours travel to Eastwood Golf for Round 2. This season Pakenham has entered a fifth team in the Saturday Pennant competition in the Six-ASide format. This new team faced a tough opening round, away on grass against the strong Clayton club. However they proved up to the task, fighting back from being down on both rinks and minus 11 shots at half time to get up and win overall by two shots 45/43 and pick up 12 Pennant points. Best rink was Alan Wilcock (S), Gail Wilcock (2) and Patricia Morris (L) with a score of 27/20. The Fifths will be at home to St Kilda next round. MIDWEEK Round 2 was a good one for the

midweek players. Pakenham Two (Div 1 Open) had a satisfying 67/48 home win against old foes Berwick, collecting 14 of the available 16 Pennant points and moving to second spot on the ladder. Best rink (again) was Gary Crowley (S), Jim Williams (3), Ned Courtin (2) and Vince Bevilacqua (L) who really stamped their authority with a 25/9 win. They will have a battle in Round 3, away against the powerful Mulgrave Country Club. Pakenham Three (Div 3 Open) went down the road to Narre Warren where they won on two of the three rinks, with an overall score of 60/44. The win was all the more satisfying in that it involved a big come from behind effort - the Lions were down on two rinks at the halfway mark but turned a four shot deficit into a 16 shot win. Best rink was Jim Barrie (S), John Donazzan (3), Peter Bott (2) and Ray Illing (L) with a 26/7 scorecard. The Threes will be at home to Cardinia Waters (2) in Round 3. Pakenham Four (Six-A-Side Open) also played at Narre Warren where they battled all day to halve the available Pennant points with a 42-all draw. Best rink was John Hickman (S), Lindsay Stevenson (2) and Patricia Morris (L) with a score of 21/19. The Threes have a home game against the Dandenong Club in round three. HI-LO The winner of the Hi-Lo for Round 1 was Norm Box with number 26.

No luck for Cardinia Waters on the greens CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS The Cardinia Waters Bowls Club could be accused of playing computer games instead of bowls last week, WWW, Week Without Wins. The closest team to win was the Midweek Division 2s, who went to Burden Park. They had the game won after 18 ends when they were eight shots up overall. The final three ends saw them fall away and they lost 59 to 66. Skipper Phil Wynd with Dennis Patmore, Dennis Stephenson and Ray Naylor were well in front all day but lost 11 shots over the final three ends for a 27 to 18 win. John Van Vugt skipped for Simon Koning, Tom Gogan and John Bacon, they led 13 to eight after 11 ends but fell behind to lose

a close one, 20 to 23. David Blake with Donny Gibson, Doug Eastick and Bill Hite also led early but won only two ends on the run home to go down 12 to 25. The Midweek Division 3 side was at home to Cranbourne and lost 52 to 74. Jenny Edmonds skipped for Brian Byrne, Jill Naylor and Bryan Anderson, They were badly down early, got back in front but eventually lost a close one, 16 to 19. Mick Knight with Peter Mitchell, Rae Richardson and Graeme Taylor was down two to 13 on the 7th end but battled back to lose 20 to 25. Gary Salomons with Gary Bonfield, Ian Smith and Marie Stephenson played better in the run home but lost 16 to 30.

The Saturday Division 4 side hosted the Pakenham Club and lost the bragging rights, 66 to 82. The winning rink was skipper Phil Wynd with Dennis Patmore, Gary Salomons and Bryan Anderson, They were eight all on the 10th end but finished better to win 22 to 17. Bill Hite with Brian Wright, Rae Richardson and Mick Knight started well with a six on the second end and had a close game from then on to lose a close one, 19 to 23. Brian Stevens skipped for Ron Wakefield, Graeme Taylor, and Lindsay Cameron. They were nine all after 11 ends but fell away to lose 12 to 20. John Van Vugt with Simon Koning, Del Dance and Jim Smith dropped a seven on the second end and never really recov-

ered, luck wasn’t on their side, but held on to lose 13 to 22. The Division 1, 12-a-side team went to South Oakleigh and came home losers, 59 to 71. The winning rink was Len Judge, with Rick Smart, Alan Copley and Cliff Heath. They trailed early but charged home, scored a seven on the 18th, and won 29 to 22. Tom Davie skipped for Jim McCallum, Ian Smith and Tom Gogan. They were in front until the 17th end but lost the last four ends to lose the close one, 15 to 18. John Carr skipped for Michele Bondfield, Gary Bondfield, and Brad Potter. They were level on the 10th end but gave away too many big ends on the run home to lose 15 to 31.

Twilight games now twice a week as the comp heats up PAKENHAM GOLF MONDAY Monday's competition was Stableford and the weather was kind which resulted in a larger than normal field. The winner in A Grade was Harry Elyasie with 37 points on a countback from Matheus Vanderhorst. The B Grade winner was Doug Barrot with an awesome round of 42 points. Doug is one of the more animated members when he plays - and when he finishes as well - so it was pleasing to see him complete a great round. You required 35 points to win a ball. WEDNESDAY Members again played Stableford and the weather was fantastic throughout the daily comp and also for the first day of Twilight. The A Grade winner was Pat Ellerton with 41 points who just beat Gary Clymo on 40 points. The B Grade winner was Danny McMinimee on 42 points and the runner-up was Rex

Jobling on 41 points. The scoring was exceptional again throughout the field as you needed 37 points to win a ball. John Wilson won the Supercomp with 22 points around the back nine. The first night of Twilight was won by the “in form” Tom Arnett with 21 points. Brian Webster beat Steve Northcott for second place with 20 points. It's been decided to combine Wednesday and Friday for the weekly Twilight so if you want to play both you’re welcome and your best score is chosen or you can play whichever day suits your plans each week. THURSDAY The ladies played Monthly Medal which was in the Stableford format. The medal winner was Leanne Barker with 36 points. She was going to wear her jumper with her other four medals on it but she thought

it would be difficult to swing. Good luck now with an extra medal to swing around. Leanne also won the Division 2 section with Diane Boyd taking out Division 1 with 39 points. Diane is a guest so she was ineligible for the medal. Unfortunately no one hit the par three greens to win a prize. FRIDAY The winner of the Friday comp was Ron Seamer with a solid score of 37 points. Members were starting to worry as Ron hadn’t won a comp for a month or so. Welcome back Ron. SATURDAY The men played Monthly Medal and the medal winner was Bryan Clydesdale with a great score of 67 nett. The runner-up in A Grade was Craig Clissold with 71 nett. The B Grade winner was Brian Tolkuhn with 69 nett with Robin McCrae in second with 71 nett. The C Grade winner was Matt Boon with 75 nett

and the runner-up was Tom McDermott with 76 nett. The winners in A and B Grade had a great day also winning some vouchers in the Supercomp but unfortunately the same didn’t occur for another Brian in the comp. Brian Webster arrived for his afternoon tee time and teed off the 10th tee in front of some boisterous members who had already completed their round. Not to bore you with the details but he took six shots before he passed the red markers. It’s never easy when you rush from the carpark to the tee but it is even more difficult when you have people heckling you from the balcony. Brian took it in his stride and completed the hole in 11 strokes with nothing said to the hecklers. Well done Brian. SUNDAY The winner was Matt Yusoff with 37 points.

George claims monthly medal GARFIELD GOLF A field of 100 faced the starter for the playing of the October Monthly Medal on Saturday which as per usual is proudly sponsored by Garfield’s Country Style Meats. Played in fine and clear conditions it was the left-handed veteran, George Gray who came out victorious with a nett score of 67 playing off his mark of 29. Dave Lawler was the best for the A Grade event finishing just the one shot further back playing off a handicap of 14. John Coutts did best for B Grade with a winning score of 69 playing off his handicap of 16. The mercurial Gus McKillop had the best scratch score for the day with a five over 74 recorded. A final score of 72 or better was required to win a ball down the line which was achieved by another 11 players. Pieter Van Der Horst scored an eagle three on the par five first hole. A field of 43 came out for a game on Thursday with Darren Stanton returning to the winners' list with a fine score of 41 points just the one point clear of Trevor Franklin to win the A Grade event. David Thorp won the B Grade event with a winning score of 38 points. Stanton backed this performance up by coming out on Sunday to win that comp as well by scoring 35 points. A score of 35 points or better was needed to win a ball for the next best. A field of 30 contested that evening’s twilight single stableford event which consisted of a field of 12 visitors and the 18 members. Kevan McMillan had the best score for the members with a nice nine hole round of 20 points playing off his handicap of 11. Best score for the visitors was 16 points recorded by Nick Henwood. COMING UP Next Saturday is a game of single Stableford, with the start of the Summer Cup commencing the week after that. All members are reminded of the 2017 Club Championships with the time sheets now available on the club's notice board. Times are filling up very fast so be sure to register asap if you haven’t already done so. Also upcoming on 4 November is the Barnes/Fallon Shield Mixed Canadian event commencing at 10.30am.
