By Brendan Rees The number of public nuisance offences has soared and overall crime in Casey is up, but police say they are working hard to keep the community safe.

Latest Crime Statistics Agency Victoria data showed crime in the City of Casey had increased 3.3 per cent with public nuisance offences rising to 43.8 per cent, up from 73 offences to 105.

The data also recorded a 5.6 per cent jump in burglaries in the year to June, increasing from 2432 offences to 2567.

Southern Metro Region Commander, Acting Superintendent Tom Nairn said police were pouring in efforts to reduce residential burglaries.

“We believe that any number is too high which is why we have dedicated operations focusing on this type of offending,” he said.

The figures also showed crimes against the person were also up 8.3 per cent from 3929 to 4254.

Acting Supt Nairn said the rise in assaults was primarily as a result of an increase in the reporting of family violence incidents.

“We believe this is partially due to increased confidence in police responses as well as an increase in community awareness and understanding that family violence is a crime,” he said.

Robberies in Casey were down 18.9 per cent which Acting Supt Nairn said was against a state-wide increase.

“We have seen commercial locations such as service stations, milk bars and restaurants targeted to obtain cash and cigarettes. Street robberies focusing on mobile phones have also been prevalent. It is pleas-

ing to see that the combined efforts of the Southern Metro Region Crime Team and local operations by the Casey Crime Investigation Unit have impacted on the reduction of robberies.”

Acting Supt Nairn said a link between vehicle theft and aggravated burglary continued but added: “Rest assured we are not complacent.”

“Police across Casey will continue to work hard to prevent, deter and investigate and arrest offenders in order to keep the community safe. We want to see further decreases in the crime rate overall, with both crimes against the person and property as the major focus,” he said.

Among the victims of criminal damage was Cranbourne East resident Sharyn Murdoch, who was disgusted to find her car rear window smashed on the morning of Monday 2 October.

“Whether or not we were targeted or it was just somebody wanting to steal it and couldn’t get in so they smashed it, I don’t know,” she said.

Ms Murdoch said she had planned to sell her car, a Kio Rio hatch.

“It means we’ve now got to repair the window just to sell it,” adding “It’s disgusting. I hate vandals.”

State Member for Gembrook Brad Battin said home invasion and aggravated burglary were a major concern for local families where they would “not feel safe in your own home”.

Mr Battin said Premier Daniel Andrews had his “head in the sand” if he thought the crime statistics were positive.

“Enough is enough. People want more police, tougher sentences and better protection in their own homes,” Mr Battin said.

“A government's priority should

be to protect the community, and Daniel Andrews has failed.”

Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera said while more work needed to be done, the State Government would provide Victoria Police with the resources and powers they need to keep the community safe.

“We have heard the Casey community’s concerns and have responded with a significant investment in new police and crime prevention funding for the area.

“The first 300 of our over 3135 new police will see 31 police allocated to the Casey PSA - which have already started to be deployed in these communities with more coming each month.

South Eastern Metro MP Inga Peulich slammed the State Government for a 34.33 per cent surge in crime in Casey since taking office in December 2014. Ms Peulich said public crime statistics revealed a 6011 increase of offences reported in Casey since the election of the Andrews Labor Government.

“Daniel Andrews promised to smash the violent youth gangs running rampant across our state, but these statistics prove he hasn’t even made a dent,” Ms Peulich said.

“This isn’t just a crime wave, it is a crime tsunami. The culture of lawlessness in the City of Casey under Daniel Andrews must end.”

Police say the public can play their role in reducing crime such as locking their cars and not leaving tools visible in work vehicles and trailers when unattended. Drat plan to guide Casey over the next 20 years on exhibition The Draft Casey Western Port Green Wedge Management Plan is a strategic framework that will guide the planning of the southern primarily rural areas of the city over the next 20 years.

Cranbourne’s sweet sounds

By Brendan Rees The Cranbourne Chorale thrived in their recent performance in a world premiere concert at Melbourne’s Arts Precinct.

Twenty-four members of the Cranbourne Chorale were one of 17 choirs across Victoria who featured in a new Australian musical work, PEACE - A Cantata for John Monash at Melbourne Arts Centre, Hamer Hall on Saturday 9 September.

The Cranbourne Chorale were part of a 200-strong choir with singers, an orchestra and soloists of all ages from around the state.

Media assistant for the John Monash PEACE cantata Ben Glover said the concert, which had been seven years in the making was a “great success” and left the audience captivated.

“The Cranbourne Chorale is a community choir, so they revelled in the opportunity to perform in a coalition choir of over 200 singers alongside a professional orchestra and vocal soloists,” he said.

“They had a great sense of achievement in being able to perform in a large-scale concert which was very distinct from their regular performance contexts.”

He said the Cranbourne chorale diligently rehearsed for the event with their director Anne Credlin, and also internationally-renowned conductor and the

Musical director Anne Credlin was honoured to be involved: “It’s such a wonderful experience for the choristers.“ John Monash (1865-1931) was born and raised in Victoria, and was Australia’s most famous military commander of WWI. He planned the Allied attack at the Battle of Amiens in northern France August 1918, which led to the end of the war.

British, Australian and Canadian troops led the offensive.

Mr Kram said John Monash was an inspiring man: “It wasn’t hard to come up with the musical themes and colours to express this great man’s life.

“I’ve long been a fan of John Monash and as a musician it felt natural to use colours of sound,

to illustrate significant events of his life. Kevin’s poem inspired me to compose PEACE as an opera, but gradually the writing took the form of a cantata; an en-masse piece for multiple soloists, choirs and orchestra, together representing the men, women and children from the places he lived in Melbourne and regional Victoria,” Mr Kram said.

“Monash and Melbourne are intertwined - everywhere you go in in this city you see glimpses of the great man - it’s where he lived and where his legacy lives on. We wouldn’t want the premiere of this monumental piece to be held anywhere else.”

Next year is the 100th anniversary of the battle and the piece will be performed in Amiens, France, on the centenary of the event.

An urgent review of light plane safety over Casey has been called in the wake of the deadly Clyde North plane crash in August.

At a meeting on 3 October, councillors voted to urge the Federal Government to move the boundaries of Moorabbin Airport’s low-flying training zone “well away” from Casey “as a matter of urgency.”

Cr Gary Rowe warned of the dangers aircraft posed in Cranbourne and surrounding built-up areas.

Adding to the danger, he said many of the pilots were learners.

“This has been a problem for a number of years and it’s progressively getting worse,” Cr Smith said.

He said trainee pilots with an instructor conducted engine failures and forced landing procedures at 500 feet, over residential areas which was putting the community at risk.

Cr Smith said it was an “issue of public safety” if Cranbourne continued to fall under Moorabbin’s Airport’s light aircraft training area, adding a plane could quite easily crash into a “family home, a school, a public bus, anything because we are the fastest growing municipality in the country.”

“They put the aircraft into a stall and cut the engine which loses all drag of the wings and the plane begins to fall. The trainee pilot has to go through emergency restart procedures, at the same time as identifying in the area a suitable place for emergency landing.”

“At 500 feet, an aircraft descending in emergency situations is not a great deal of distance between you and the ground.”

Cr Smith said many people were moving into new estates in Casey. “It’s still within the lowflying training zone with emergency procedures taking place overhead. Something can go wrong.

We have seen it recently. Unfortunately it was a fatality.”

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau statistics revealed there were 37 accidents, 670 incidents and 40 serious incidents within a 35-kilometre radius of Moorabbin airport between 2012 and 2017. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority says it will consider the council’s request carefully, and respond as soon as possible.

Royal Victorian Aero Club President Stuart Rushton said stalling procedures were conducted over paddocks in the Casey area, adding it was “not a low-flying exercise at all.”

“Normally stalls are not conducted below 3500 feet.”

He said a plane’s engine was not cut out like a car during a stall. “You’re not talking about the engine stopping. We’re talking about the wing stalling. All that’s done is the power is pulled back and the nose is held up so the speed decays and then the wing stalls.”

“The stall most often occurs during the final stages of approach for landing. So the teaching of the stall is so the student can recognise what a stall is, what it’s like and how to recover from it.”

Mr Rushton said CASA regulations stated low flying could not be conducted below 500 feet over a built-up area. He said the only exclusion for a plane to be below 500 feet was when it was taking off or landing.

Cops seek firebug Casey Crime Investigation Unit is appealing for witnesses after unknown persons set fire to shrubs and vegetation on a Narre Warren roundabout at 2.20am on Saturday 7 October.

Detective Senior Constable Mark Wiederhold said a small amount of accelerant was allegedly used to set fire to the middle of the roundabout at the intersection of Green Ridge Avenue and Fountain Drive.

Computers go missing Casey Crime Investigation Unit is appealing for witnesses following an aggravated burglary in Warrington Close, Narre Warren.

About 1am on Tuesday 3 October, police allege several offenders entered a house while a 46 year-old female was home, and got away with computers and phones valued at about $2000.

Detective Senior Constable Mark Wiederhold said offenders entered the property through a side gate and unlocked back door.

“They’ve fled west on Warrington Close. We believe about five persons were involved from information received from the victim,” he said.

Letters Emperor’s new clothes We’ve all heard the story of the emperor’s new clothes. Telling the truth was something the officials and those in high places were not able to do. It took a small child to break the deception.

It reminds me of what is occurring in our nation right now.

We are being told by the politicians and those in high places that redefining the definition of marriage will have no consequences.

We have been told this by Mr Turnbull, Mr Shorten, Mr Pyne, Senator Wong, Mr Alan Joyce and so the long list goes on. And we are not even allowed to have sensible a discussion about this without being called a bigot, homophobe and worse. This raises some very big red flags for me … red being very significant! Do we need a child to break down the furphies we are being told?

There are huge consequences if the nation changes the Marriage Act. We only have to look at other nations that have made the change and see how this has changed these nations. Canada has had same-sex marriage legalised for 12 years and just recently in Ontario they passed a bill that has struck out the terms “mother and father” from law and legislated for a child to have up to four legal parents. Is this what we want for our children and grandchildren?

Already we are seeing some frightening things happen even before there is a change.

Julian Porteous, the Catholic Archbishop taken to court in Tasmania for actually telling his congregation (and no-one else) that marriage is between a man and a woman.

And this is before any changes are made to the Federal Marriage Act. Only one example of free speech being shut down at a rapid rate in the nation. Then we have Father’s Day ads refused to being aired, people losing jobs and being forced from positions on boards just because they believe in traditional marriage and say so … all in the past 12 months and this is here in Australia! Loss of freedom of speech, freedom of religion and what will be taught in our schools are all very serious consequences that will occur if the Marriage Act is changed.

To those who are yet to vote, please do and make sure you are very thoughtfully indicating your response to the question we have been asked. Look carefully Australia … the emperor is wearing no clothes.

VicRoads and Fulton Hogan would do well to revisit the idea behind their risk analysis for this project, including its appropriate management, co-ordination and timely maintenance and rectification of identified risks.

One can only empathise with Todd Curtis (lead article, News, 28 September by Cam Lucadou-Wells). Why anyone either wants to ride or drive the nightmare that is now the Monash Freeway from Cardinia Road onwards to the city must have some sort of psychological death wish or are oblivious to chaos and confusion.

Am I surprised that VicRoads and Fulton Hogan are playing pass the parcel? No. They are responsible for: a deteriorating road surface for all users, a route inundated with conflicting signs - their attempt to justify safety, inordinately long works (now well into a second year - their contract must be on a monthly basis), a proliferation of road line markings which in some places converge, merge and cross especially which on dark or wet days have lead to numerous near misses, tail-enders, side swipes and “road rage".

Restriction signs in areas where there is no work being done or where work is five to 10 metres away from what used to be the breakdown road, protruding flexible conduit, poorly arranged bollards (with graffiti “tags" readily visible), recently and original installed noise barriers with damaged panels, poorly positioned temporary bollards placed by “contractors“ that result in traffic being reduced to one lane with their “work" (if you can use that word when you see four or five blokes in high-vis watching another driving a piece of equipment metres from the road) well out of traffic and harm's way, trucks and cars travelling in convoy especially in the outer lane such that you can’t lane change, fluctuating speed signs for no apparent reason - great for stop start cha-cha style motoring.

By Brendan Rees Cranbourne nine-year-old Logan Dyer is living his dream and has a good reason to smile too.

Logan recently returned from Horsham after finishing as the top 33rd rider in the country when he competed in the Australian Junior Motocross Championship.

The event, held from 30 September to 6 October, drew more than 400 riders of all ages from Australia, Estonia, Thailand and New Zealand.

The Grade 4 Cranbourne East Primary school student qualified for the seven to nine-year-old age group on the 65cc dirt bike in the lead up to the finals.

Logan’s family are his biggest fans with mum Krysta, dad Drew, and brothers Brody, 7, and Nate, 6, making sure they were there for the championship to cheer him on.

Mum Krysta Browning said she could not be prouder of her son’s achievement.

“It is a huge accomplishment for him, and at his age the world is his oyster and can only improve,” she said.

“Proud is an understatement, having our son competing at the level that was there was an achievement within itself and no matter where he was to finish we were proud.”

“He showed true strength and determination as each race approached, and he never gave up and most importantly he had an absolute ball whilst there,” she said.

At the age of just two, Logan took to two wheels like a duck to water and within three years he was riding competitively, showing plenty of promise in motocross.

And he never shies away from the hard work needed to continually improve.

Ms Bowning said Logan just loved the sport.

“Logan lives for Motocross. If he isn’t at the track racing or training he will be at home watching Motocross or supercross,” she said.

“He got the interest from his dad who has always enjoyed riding. We got him into the sport at a young age and now it is something he loves to do.”

Ms Browning said he rides most weekends

Logan Dyer, of Cranbourne was thrilled to compete in the Australian Junior Motocross Championship. and receives coaching from supercross rider Sam Martin.

Asked if she gets nervous watching her son ride, Ms Browning admits it can be “nerve wrecking.”

“Knowing if something were to go wrong, you are not allowed on the track at all, and all you can hope for is your child crosses the finish line with all limbs in-tact,” said.

And with only 12 months to go, Logan will begin training soon to qualify for next year’s 2018 World Motocross Championship which will again be hosted in Horsham.

The community project, initiated in July by Lyndhurst Secondary College teacher Sue Carroll, was now well underway and students were benefiting from these positive

engagement activities.

“It’s heart-warming to see these beautiful interactions with young and older people as it shows a real appreciation of life, compassion and respect.

One volunteer commented that it is wonderful to see the residents so active and engaged; it is lovely to watch,” Ms Clancy said.

“Thankyou to all residents and staff at Lifeview Willow Wood. Lyndhurst Secondary College students will be returning for more fun and games later this month.”

Car rammed into house

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has been charged after allegedly ramming another car at high speed, causing it to spin across oncoming peak-time traffic and into the back of a house on Pound Road, Hampton Park.

In what was described as a family violence dispute, police said the man allegedly chased another male driver and then pulled a “pit maneovre” in which he rammed the rear corner of the other car from the side.

It is normally a trained tactic employed by police, Narre Warren CIU’s Detective Sergeant Chris O’Brien said.

The cars reached speeds of about 100km/h on the busy, built-up thoroughfare, about 4.30pm on Wednesday 4 October, police say.

When struck, the victim’s car allegedly spun backwards across an oncoming traffic lane, into gravel, through

a back fence and struck the two-storey townhouse.

The crash caused the collapse of a pillar, windows and roof section of the house.

The victim walked away from the crash. He was assessed at the scene by paramedics but required no further treatment, an Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said.

“It’s miraculous that noone was injured or killed,” Det Sgt O’Brien said.

Due to the damage, the home has been declared unsafe for habitation. The house’s occupants have been sheltered in emergency accommodation.

A 19-year-old Hampton Park man was charged with offences including conduct endangering life and dangerous driving.

He was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 28 November.

Community members shared a brew and their views with police on Wednesday 4 October as part of National Coffee with a Cop Day, which was hosted by Donut King at Cranbourne Park.

Casey Community Engagement Officer Acting Sergeant Laura Carter said the hour-long event was hosted by cafes at shopping centres across Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong.

“It’s an opportunity for the community to meet their local police, ask questions, voice concerns and just have a chat - all over a free cup of coffee,” she said.

Sgt Carter said Cranbourne Park hosted monthly events, usually on the last Wednesday of the month, and will be hosting again on the 26 October.

Ice-addict thief jailed

A 32-year-old ice-addict who wielded either a machete or a knife during five armed robberies on “soft target venues” in Melbourne’s SouthEast has been jailed.

Steven Joshua McQueen pleaded guilty to the series of robberies and thefts over four days in March 2016.

McQueen’s targets were a Tooradin servo, an Upper Beaconsfield supermarket, general stores in Frankston South and Langwarrin and a Frankston milk bar, Victorian County Court judge Carolene Gwynn said in sentencing on 2 October.

He had been disguised in a raised hoodie, sunglasses and on one occasion a ‘Scream’ mask.

Before and amidst the robbery spree, he stole three sets of vehicle number plates, which he affixed to disguise his car and his partner’s car during the hold-ups, Judge Gwynn said.

The disguises, the choice of small-scale shop owners, the number plate thefts and forearming of weapons made the crimes “not entirely opportunistic”, she said.

“Your offending was brazen, aggressive and serious.”

The victims, who declined to provide impact statements, were no doubt terrified by McQueen, the judge said.

In one incident, a store attendant was observed cowering from a machete-wielding McQueen as he removed a cash register drawer from her store.

Judge Gwynn accepted McQueen, who had been in the throes of a severe meth addiction at the time of offending, had since shown genuine remorse.

McQueen relapsed into drug use and reoffended late last year after a positive start to a CISP bail program, the judge said. He is still to appear at a magistrates’ court on those offences.

Still in the early stages of recovery, he had returned clear urine screens for several months, she noted.

Given he had no criminal history, his age and his therapeutic supports, his prospects of rehabilitation were “good if not high”.

McQueen was convicted and jailed for up to five years and nine months, with a non-parole period of three years and four months.

Cranbourne’s Little Athletics were inspired to go for gold after rubbing shoulders with an Australian Olympian.

More than 100 new little athletes attended a ‘come and try night’ on Friday 29 September at the Casey Fields Athletic Track with Olympic long jumper Brooke Stratton - who finished seventh at the 2016 Rio de Janerio Olympics and narrowly, missed the final at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing - dropping in to provide a clinic for the little future stars.

Cranbourne Little Athletics Centre secretary Nina O’Dea said it was an exciting atmosphere with children sampling an array of track and field events including 100, 800, and 400 metre sprints, shotput and long jump.

“Brooke Stratton demonstrated and held a short long jump clinic for the athletes and was gracious in her time and support for the club. We look forward to an ongoing partnership with her as the season progresses.”

Ms O’Dea said many of the children and their parents were excited to see how the track and field events unfolded, and it gave them all a taste of what was to come when the season begins next Saturday 7 October.

“The coaching team at Cranbourne Little Athletics were on hand to help guide and teach the skills of the events to the little athletes, and it was wonderful to see many of the athletes walking away from their event with giant smiles with their achievements and sharing that with their family.”

She said people inquiring about their Multi Class Team for athletes with an intellectual or physical disability was “explosive,” despite just a week remaining before the season starts.

by Cathy Freeman to get to that Olympic level. I trained my butt off from when I started in under-six at Nunawading Athletics Club. I’ve been doing it ever since and I love it and that’s why I’m still doing it.”

Little Athletics is open to athletes from Under 6 to Under 15s.

Kids compete in their age group and gender for a set program each week that will consist of a minimum of four and often five events. Lyndhurst makes its name with above average results writing, where students showed a scaled score growth rate of 46 and 53, as compared to the state growth rate of 27 and 38, respectively.

College principal Konnie Prades attributed the success to the hard work and dedication of the students, along with the success of the college’s approach to individualising literacy and numeracy instruction for students.

“Programs such as SNIP (Student Numeracy Individualisation Program), VCOP writing development and Reading Block, all work in harmony to create a learning pathway that is targeted to

each student’s point of need,” Ms Prades said.

The college has become a model for a number of other schools, both in Victoria and interstate, sharing its fantastic work in areas such as SNIP. The college also features in an upcoming book on excellence in schools, Driving School Improvement: A Practical Guide authored by education experts, Vic Zbar and Pamela Macklin.

It was all smiles recently at Lyndhurst Secondary College when NAPLAN results of students were received.

Students in both Year 7 and Year 9 were thrilled to see that they had performed better than the state averages (for learning growth) in all but one area.

In the final area (spelling), their growth was equal to the state average.

This remarkable achievement was most obvious in the areas of grammar, punctuation and

Striding out at last An exciting new running event in Cranbourne called the Casey Stride Series, officially ran its first of three race series at Casey Fields on Sunday 8 October.

The events - which feature a 5km or 10km run or walk, along with a kids’ 2km or 1km run or walk, were well received in the local area on the weekend.

Dion Jelley, the founder of the Casey Stride Series, explained how the event came together.

“I moved into the Casey area at the start of the year, and there was just no events around - I went and had a few runs down at Casey Fields, and decided to set up an event,” he said.

“It’s been a pretty short turn around - we’ve managed to pull it off in a matter of months and get it up and running which is good.”

“It was our first event and had just over 100 people turn up which is pretty good - we had lots of families, and lots of kids which is one of our main targets.

“We want to be more community-based rather than racing, and we had some amazing feedback from the locals - it will be awesome to see how it grows.”

By Nick Creely VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUND 1 Casey-South Melbourne skipper Lachlan Sperling has lamented his side’s inability to stay in the game for long enough, with the Swans losing their opening round match to Ringwood on Saturday by 93 runs.

Sperling and his Swans were bowled out for 109 off 36.3 overs in the pursuit of the Rams’ par total of 202 at Casey Fields, and were suffocated by the relentless pressure the opposition applied.

“It was pretty disappointing - we weren’t good enough for long enough in all areas and that showed on the scoreboard,” he said.

“We had some periods (in the field) where we thought we were on top - they had a couple of good partnerships in the middle that turned it a little bit but I thought later on we pegged them back after they were looking at around 240.”

“We thought it was gettable, but we just didn’t execute with the bat - but we took some learnings from it for sure.

“It was the dot ball pressure, and the lines they bowled we couldn’t score off - the main thing we got from the game though was the intent of our batsmen.”

After sending the Rams in to bat, spearhead Nathan Lambden snared two early scalps courtesy of some tidy work by Dev Pollock behind the stumps, leaving the visitors 2/13.

But Lambden then tore the middle to late order apart with raw pace to take four quick wickets to keep the Rams to just 202 - a favourable total considering the Rams were at one point 4/173 and eyeing a massive score.

The Swans’ quick - who made his Victorian Futures debut last season -

took 6/16, his third five-wicket-haul at First XI level, while Brendan Rose (1/44), Dylan Hadfield (1/31) and Sperling (1/38) all chimed in and did their job.

In reply, the Swans just couldn’t rotate the strike enough, and were bowled out for just 109 despite some resistance by aggressive batsman Jordan Wyatt (42).

An early maximum that cleared the ropes by the returning Kasun Su-

riaratchie (12) had the Swans up and about, but the wickets of Suriaratchie, Michael Wallace (2) and Sperling (6) dented the home side’s ability to keep the run rate up.

But despite the loss, Sperling said his side aims to move on quick and are unlikely to make any changes, with an important clash against an Essendon side fresh off a strong win over Greenvale a chance to bounce back.

“We didn’t execute what we set

ourselves to do, but we have this week against Essendon to rectify that so we move on from there and start again,” he said.

“We’re likely to stick with the same group 100 per cent.

“It’s going to be a really good test, they have a really good side and we’re keen to get out there and test ourselves - we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Casey will travel to play the Bombers at Windy Hill on Saturday.

Cranny wins without ’em

By Nick Creely REVIEW - ROUND 1 (Day 1) Cranbourne has proven they are capable of scoring a match winning total without Matt Chasemore and Steve Spoljaric after an excellent day’s cricket against Dandenong West at Greaves Reserve.

Sent in to bat by Bulls’ skipper Shanuka Dissanayaka, the Eagles got off to a tough start losing David Pratt’s stumps to Peter Atkinson for a duck, before a string of middle order partnerships saw them bat through the day to finish on 8/238.

Eagles’ skipper Lucas Ligt (39) led the charge with a classy innings batting at four, while the likes of Cameron Kelly (46), Nivin Sathyajith (55) and Jake Harrington (35) all worked in partnerships to frustrate the hosts.

Ligt was proud his young team could start the season so positively after a string off on-field departures put a hole in their side.

“What we worked for all pre-season, and the plans we put in place was virtually 100 per cent executed on the weekend,” he said.

“We talked about batting in partnerships and setting some goals, and we achieved virtually every one of them - we wanted to be three down at lunch and we were four down which was okay, and then Harro (Jake Harrington) and Niv (Nivin Sathyajith) set the whole day up for us really.

“Cam Kelly batted quite low in previous years, and used to open back in the day and when he started his senior career at Cranny, and he put his hand up and said he was keen to open, and it’s given us some depth - he took his opportunity and delivered.”

Looking ahead to Saturday when the Eagles attempt to defend what was the opening weekend’s highest team score, Ligt has confidence his bowlers will be hungrier than ever.

“Our bowlers have worked all pre-season to 80 over plans and we want to execute that - I’ve said the whole way that whoever bowls the most disciplined areas will bowl the most overs and

“I think if we execute our plans with a strong fielding side too we’ll be right - we bought Harley Miller in who hasn’t played for a few years and

Meanwhile, Berwick is in a commanding position on a dominant opening day of cricket at Souter Oval against Dingley, with the Bears need-

ing just a further 68 runs for victory.

Sent in to bat on a tricky wicket, Dingoes coach Matt Hague (76) stood tall at the top-ofthe-order, with quickies James Wilcock (5/49) and Jarrod Armitage (1/64) snaring early wickets.

A 69-run stand between Hague and all-rounder Christo Otto (42) got the Dingoes back on track, before Wilcock shredded the middle to late order in a devastating spell that included three wickets in a matter of three overs.

Eventually, the Dingoes fought their way to 174 after a late cameo by Marc King (34 not out).

The Bears wasted no time in moving towards a match-winning position, with opening bats Darren de Souza (32) and Adam Watson (51 not out) sharing a faultless 69-run partnership.

Spinner Dinuka Hettiarchchi (1/28) picked up the late wicket of de Souza, but the Bears ended the day 1/107.

Down at Hallam Reserve, Hallam and Springvale South are playing out a fascinating day of cricket.

Hallam skipper Steve Gilmour elected to bat, and despite no batsman able to capitalize on starts, the likes of Ben Hillard (35), Jagveer Hayer (42) and Jordan Hammond (47) ensured they posted a competitive total of 200 off 75.1 overs.

In reply, the Bloods lost star opener Nathan King (7) caught behind off Gilmour, and are currently sitting at 1/9 off four overs.

AFL-bound midfielder Hunter Clark has claimed the Dandenong Stingrays’ Best and Fairest, running away with the award by almost 100 votes.

Clark - who is firming in the race to be a potential top-10 pick in this year’s draft, polled 192 votes from just 13 TAC Cup matches in 2017, in a season in which he averaged almost 30 disposals per match.

Top-age half-back flanker Mason De Wit finished second on 100 votes after a consistent season, while hard-nosed inside midfielder Mitch Cotter was just behind him in third with 92 votes.

All eyes will now turn to the draft, with up to seven Stingrays - Clark, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Aiden Bonar, Tom De Koning, Oscar Clavarino, Aaron Darling and Riley D’Arcy - all a live chance of being on AFL lists in the coming months.

Lehman’s winning ton

By Russell Bennett A practically flawless unbeaten century from Tooradin opener Russell Lehman delivered his side an impressive first-up victory over the reigning champions and West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA) Premier powerhouse Kooweerup at Denhams Road on Saturday.

Impressive Kooweerup 16-year-old all-rounder Mitch Davey top-scored for his side after skipper Mark Cooper won the toss and elected to bat.

Davey was unbeaten on 61, guiding the Demons to 7/220 from their 40 overs.

But it was an unbeaten 132-run stand for the fourth wicket between Lehman (105 not out) and Josh Lownds (68 not out) that guided the visitors home as they reached 3/222 in the 38th over.

The two were simply superb - giving a lesson in building an innings, but more importantly, capitalising with bog knocks in a crucial win.

Tooradin’s talent as a core group has never been in question, but in the past there have been some questions surrounding their application - particularly with the bat. A few early wickets could have a snowball effect, but not on Saturday.

Lehman looked for runs in all corners of the ground, while Lownds used his feet superbly particularly against the Demons slower bowlers.

They stayed confident, and stuck to the task at hand - putting the responsibility of winning the game on to their own shoulders.

At Cardinia, meanwhile, a new-look Bulls outfit brushed off the cobwebs and showed plenty of upside in the process of a composed win over

Merinda Park; Pakenham was forced to toil hard for its win over Upper Beaconsfield at Toomuc Reserve; and Clyde began the new Premier season right where it left off on the final day of the last District season. Clyde lost just five wickets on the way to reaching 224 from their 40 overs with Gavin Britt (76 not out) and Shane Webster (52) top-scoring.

In reply, new Emerald skipper Mitch Daley (58) notched a half-century of his own while Mitch Thomas (32) and Aaron Brooks (38 not out) also added valuable contributions with the willow, but it wasn’t enough as the home side was dismissed for 160 in 33 overs.

In District, Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll broke a 33-game first XI losing streak dating back almost three years when the Marygoons brilliantly defeated Tooradin by four wickets at the Seagulls’ nest on Saturday.

The boys from Nar Nar Goon last won a game back in Round 9 of the 2014/'15 season against Officer, when they defeated the Bullants by three wickets.

But a newly energised Marygoon outfit featuring seven changes from its last game in 2016/'17 - sent the ‘Gulls in to bat in captaincoach Kyle Dorman’s first game for his new side.

The home side posted a competitive 7/153 from its 40 overs, but the Marygoons (6/155) broke their drought with four wickets and 7.4 overs to play.

Gurpreet Bhamra, meanwhile, inspired Cranbourne Meadows to a crushing victory over Carlisle Park with an astonishing seven-wicket haul.

Win for father-son combo at bowls CRANBOURNE BOWLS Cranbourne’s own father-son combination took on Keysborough for the first win of the season in pennant bowls.

Skip Frank Byrne teamed up with his dad, Joe, to contribute to a 20-shot win against Keysborough on Saturday’s first round of pennant bowls for the season.

SIDE 1 DIVISION 2 Playing away at Keysborough, new Skip, Frank Byrne, finished with a draw on his rink despite getting away to an early lead, and Skip John McKenna went down by two shots in a close finish.

But an outstanding performance by Skip Ron “Two Dogs” Lyfield and his rink of Paul O’Day, Peter Coulthup, and Tony Collins won by 10 shots, however fill-in skip Peter Elgar and his merry men and woman team of Lynne Wood, Hans Worstelling and Noel Hardy went two better with a 12-shot win.

All in all a very satisfying start to the season with a 20-shot victory over strong opposition.

Asked after the game if Frank got all his bowling skills and coaching from his dad, Frank answered “not entirely”. Perhaps

a man of few words, but it was great to see the two of them enjoying a beverage after the game and thoroughly enjoying each other’s company during the day.

What a great opportunity for a son to play a sport with his dad, pure gold.

SIDE 2 DIVISION 3 In a bit of a shock loss, home team Cranbourne were outplayed

by Ferntree Gully by 27 shots despite being unbeatable in preseason form.

The rinks of Hudson, Farrington and Dudink had narrow defeats, but Cranbourne just could

not get going and any chance of a win slipped away.

Hopefully, this week was just a slight hiccup with better form expected next week against Mount Waverley.

SIDE 3 DIVISION 5 Skip John Kent and his rink had a one shot win, but the remaining rinks went down in close contests to record a 20-shot loss to Churchill Waverley.

SIDE 4 DIVISION 8 Cranbourne defeated Highett by walkover.

Narre bowlers even-handed on the greens NARRE WARREN BOWLS The bowls season is in full swing with Narre Warren winning three, losing three and recording a draw from its seven teams over the two days.

On Tuesday, Division 2 travelled to the Dandenong Club for its second win. Jos van Hout, Reg Young, Geoff Ampt and Rod Lane led the way, winning 25-10, and were supported by Tina Courtin, Ernesto Vergara, Alan Mark and Keith Mark (28-16).
