Eighteen months on since the sod-turning, construction is progressing well at the Belgrave Community Hub site, in time for the expected completion by mid next year.

The partnership between Inspiro and council will provide essential community health services to the region and help respond to a high demand for allied health, family and children services and dental services.

The $9.73 million hub will provide purpose-built accommodation for visiting specialist services such as mental health, public dental services and services for people experiencing family violence.

The grounds surrounding the hub will be landscaped and include a natural play space, an outdoor plaza and public art.

Mayor Noel Cliff said services were very much needed in the Belgrave area and would complement the work of local GPs in the area.

“It’s wonderful to see works are progressing so nicely,” Cr Cliff said.

“Council’s Maternal and Child Health, Youth and Aged and Disability services, Inspiro services and the Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relieve Service will be available at the hub.”

Federal Member for La Trobe Jason Wood said the Belgrave Community Health Hub was set to do some great work for the community.

“I’m so glad the Federal Government could be involved in funding this project, and I look forward to seeing it up and running next year,” Mr Wood said.

Deputy Premier and Monbulk MP James Merlino said the community had strongly advocated for the project, and he was glad to see it coming to fruition.

“This is about putting some of our most important services together in one place, and that is why we have provided the funding we have,” Mr Merlino said.

Council has provided $1.5 million towards the multi-purpose hub in the

running costs of the facility, estimated to be around $120,000 per year.

Council secured funding including $3.8m through the Federal Government’s National Strong Regions Fund

and $1.7m from the State Government, which includes $723,000 from the Growing Suburbs Fund and $1 million from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP).

By Derek Schlennstedt Pets Haven, a new not-for-profit veterinary clinic and animal rescue service in Bayswater, is facing closure.

The clinic made a public call on Facebook to residents and locals in the area for help, which if not received may result in the clinic's closure by February, said founder Trish Burke.

The Pets Haven Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation which re-homes orphan felines and canines who would otherwise have no future.

Pets Haven has an animal shelter in Woodend and the clinic was the next progression in helping many of the mistreated and malnourished animals get the best treatment available.

“I started the animal shelter because of a genuine love for animals, and wanting to make a difference; and step by step we have,” Trish said.

That difference can be clearly seen in the foundation's statistics. In the past year the foundation has taken in 3826 animals Trish said the clinic in Bayswater was created to ensure the animals surrendered to Pets Haven were given the best service possible, as well as to provide affordable support to animal owners.

better services to our rescue animals coming through the system and to provide affordable services to the community.

“A vaccination is $55 and to desex a male cat is $65 - female cats are $100 ... the whole concept isn’t to put our rates up, it’s to be affordable for everybody.

“From saving animals off the streets, to wanting to help the community ... that’s what this clinic was meant to be.

“Pets are now seen as a luxury - we feel everybody should be able to have a pet in life and take care of it.”

Trish attributed the clinic's

troubles to a lack of clientele, and said unless it changed it was likely the not-for profit clinic that relied on donations would close in February.

“I can’t sleep ... this was just our dream and to see it fall apart, it’s soul-destroying.”

“I wanted to make a real difference to every pet owner,” she said.

Protesters voice their message out the front of Earthly Pleasures cafe.

Mega mine protest Hills residents gathered in front of Earthly Pleasures cafe in Belgrave on Saturday 7 October, calling on the Federal Government to rule out support for the proposed Adani mega-mine in north Queensland.

The protest, organised by Stop Adani Belgrave, was part of a nationwide day of action.

More than 50 people participated, drawing the support of residents from Belgrave, The Basin and beyond.

The group surveyed local shoppers, asking their views on the mine.

The group said those they surveyed “overwhelmingly voiced opposition to Adani”.

Spokesperson Don McArthur said the group didn’t want to see $1 billion of public money offered to support Adani’s polluting mine.

“Burning the coal that Adani wants to dig up means more severe weather events, more often; and the end of the Great Barrier Reef as we know it,” he said.

“Just this past week, we’ve heard warnings of 50 degrees temperatures in summer within just decades.

“If this was a health warning from our doctor, what would we do?

“One thing we would not be doing is offering a billion dollars in public money to make the problem worse.”

Mr McArthur said Australia’s big four banks, as well as a long list of international financial institutions, have ruled out funding for the mine, yet the government continues its support.

School holidays have come to an end, but police are urging residents who live near a school to keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour.

Upwey High School has been broken into recently, and in late September the school roller door was damaged and the building graffitied.

An external fire extinguisher was also emptied on the premises.

Anyone with information or has seen any suspicious behaviour is urged to contact Lilydale CIU on 9739 2300.

Dodgy tradies do their rounds Police have received reports of offenders targeting elderly and vulnerable victims, offering roof restoration and repairs for non-existent faults.

Cash is asked for upfront and the 'repairs’ are not carried out.

Sergeant at Belgrave police station Carolyn Sunderland said the offenders, “convince victims to pay for non-existent problems that they have identified with the victim's roof, and were usually foreign nationals.”

Targeted areas include Norris Drive, Lilydale, and Hull Road, Mooroolbark.

Drink driving Local shoppers were surveyed as part of the protest.

The message is made crystal clear.

“In the hills, people are joining with others nationwide to spell it out loud and clear to politicians,” he said.

“We want to invest in schools, hospitals and large-scale renewable energy projects.

“We need political courage from our members of parliament to make this happen.”

Mr McArthur said the group had approached La Trobe MP to gain his posi-

tion on this issue.

“Stop Adani Belgrave is calling on him publicly to rule out support for a $1 billion federal loan for the mine,” he said.

Over the weekend, police intercepted a female driver on Monbulk Kallista Road, who was driving erratically.

The driver blew 0.183, almost three and half times over the limit, and police found two younger children in the vehicle at the time. The driver received an instant loss of licence for 12 months and is awaiting court.

Mental health is a challenge

Yarra Ranges Shire has the second highest rate of high or very high levels of psychological distress - 20 per cent of residents in metropolitan Melbourne.

In an alarming disconnect however, the shire also has the lowest level of mental health services in the Eastern Metropolitan Region.

Yarra Ranges Council CEO, Glenn Patterson, said the mental health and well-being of all Yarra Ranges residents, visitors and employees was a key factor in council’s decisions and programs.

The Department of Health estimates that annual productivity losses attributable to mental illness range from $10-15 billion.

Ahead of Mental Health Week - 8 to 14 October - people working within the council spoke out about how good mental health impacted their work with the community.

Inspiro counsellor, Saba Balasooriya, said good mental health was about being emotionally, socially and psychologically well to function with day-to-day activities.

“It means having the supports, strategies and self-care to get through the tougher days and to celebrate the positives ones,” she said.

Inspiro runs youth and family counselling for young people aged 12-25 in Lilydale, Tecoma, Healesville and Yarra Junction on behalf of council.

“We often help young people talk through struggles they may face in their life by assisting them with problem solving,

decision making, identifying strategies and building resilience, which all contribute to good mental health,” Ms Balasooriya said.

Yarra Ranges’ human resources business partner, Kelly Ward, said council’s Mental Health and Well-being Policy made a commitment to enhancing and supporting positive mental health and well-being for all employees, councillors, volunteers, contractors and visitors.

“I encourage all employees who are not feeling right and have concerns about their own mental health to speak with our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provider or their GP,” Ms Ward said.

“Mentally healthy workplaces are more productive, and workplace policies should promote and support positive mental health.”

For Yarra Ranges Council’s Museum Program Director, Patrick Watt, good mental health is about freedom.

He said people could often be “trapped” by mental illness in their day-to-day lives.

“Good mental health is freedom - freedom to do anything, go anywhere and enjoy life,” he said.

“Bad mental health is the dog at your heel, the chip on your shoulder and the dark cloud hanging overhead.”

He said visiting venues such as the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum in Lilydale and learning more about art and history could help to foster a positive mindset.

“Exhibitions can offer us entry points into amazing cre-

ativity and research, and that can often inspire, ignite and provoke,” he said.

“If you are enjoying an exhibition in a gallery, you must be out and about - and that has to be good.”

Mr Patterson said the council had made mental health a priority through council’s Mental Health and Well-being Policy, the Health and Well-being Strategy for the municipality and by partnering with organisations such as Inspiro to ensure our residents could access services close to home.

“We want the Yarra Ranges to be a vibrant place for people to live, work and visit. If we can support our residents and employees to have good mental health and well-being, that goes a long way to making that happen,” he said.

“Whether it’s Mental Health Week or any other day of the year, it’s important to be aware of how you’re feeling and to reach out to friends, family or co-workers if things aren’t all right.”

By Peter Douglas A further 18,000 properties in the Yarra Ranges are now included in an expanded Bushfire Management Overlay (BMO), with updated mapping coming into effect on Tuesday 3 October.

Eight years in the making, the Victorian Government has unveiled the finalised mapping of the BMO, which now includes many areas traditionally considered more suburban in the shire, such as Healesville, Belgrave and Upwey-Tecoma.

An estimated 40,000 properties shire-wide are now included in the BMO, which will mean new developments or buildings will need to meet higher specifications.

The BMO is a planning control applied to land with the potential to be affected by bushfire.

The expanded BMO does not require any changes to be made to existing homes, though home owners are still being encouraged to take steps to make their property safer.

Yarra Ranges Council is now in the process of informing ratepayers through a combination of direct mail, advertising and digital communications.

Strategic Planning Project Manager, Claudette Fahy, told the ‘Mail’ the BMO would help to create more fire-resistant communities.

“The good news side is that ultimately it makes our communities more fire resistant and more resilient because - bottom line - you have to build to a higher standard,” Ms Fahy said.

“But that only affects new buildings, so there is no need to retrofit existing buildings to make them more fire resilient.

“So if your property just came into the BMO - and you’re not planning to build anything - you’ve just got another planning control attached to the property.”

Ms Faye said the BMO formed part of an important response to the Black Saturday bushfires, with the BMO a result of recommendations from the 2009 Victorian Bushfire Royal Commission.

“The Royal Commission was very concerned with people not becoming complacent about bushfires because when it happens we’re all on top of it, but now we’re here eight years down the track,” she said.

“The CFA is always banging on about being

prepared and they’re right.”

Director of Social and Economic Development, Ali Wastie, said the BMO was introduced to the planning scheme to make new or extended homes safer and more bushfire resilient.

“If the BMO applies, a planning permit will be required to subdivide the land, build a new house or significantly extend an existing house,” Ms Wastie said.

“Other types of buildings may also need a planning permit.”

The new mapping has been developed in partnership with the CFA and CSIO. The BMO identifies areas subject to high fire risk and requires planning permission for building and works associated with: Dwellings (house, apartment, mobile home, houseboat or substantial structure); Dependent person’s unit (granny flat or moveable buildings); Education centre (kindergarten, preschool, school or training centre); Leisure or recreation; Retail or other uses.

Knox tracks the vandals - via app KNOX Council has enlisted a new tool in its war on graffiti, encouraging residents to download a free app on their phones called VandalTrak.

Mayor Darren Pearce said the camera-based smartphone app was already helping other councils find, remove and deter vandalism and unsightly graffiti.

“The app is simple to use, allowing people to take a photo of graffiti on public property in their local area and let us know,” Cr Pearce said.

“We can then respond and remove it from

council buildings, and help police find the culprits.”

Knox Council’s Community Safety Team is tackling the issue of graffiti all year round.

They advise residents and business operators to follow simple tips available from the council website - www.knox.vic.gov.au - and their customer service team - (03) 9298 8000 to help the community join them in fighting the battle on the ground: Removal of graffiti within 24 hours is the most effective way to stop it. paint is also easier to remove when cleaned immediately. As August rolls around in Victoria, some wildflowers, shrubs and native trees burst into flower.

This is the beginning of what Professor Tim Entwisle refers to as the ‘Sprinter’ season, and it represents an earlier spring than our European counterparts.

This sprinter, it was hard to miss the glorious yellow flowers of the silver and golden wattles adorning roadsides, reserves and backyards.

Melbourne was blessed to have ironbark (eucalyptus sp.) and also red box (eucalyptus sp.) flowering in all of their glory. Insects which feed on acacia and eucalypt flowers in addition to the nectar, sugary glands and pollen provided by these trees, afford food for birds which unite in mixed flocks, darting about the forest in a hungry omnivore frenzy.

My observations suggest that mixed flocks seemed to be more abundant this year.

It was not uncommon to see sittellas, whistlers, honey eaters (white-eared, white-naped, brown-headed) and scarlet robins in the one gang.

One could make the assumption that the flowering reb box sustained higher populations of canopy feeding birds.

Two of the most abundant acacia shrubs around the Melbourne are Acacia genistifolia and Acacia paradoxa. Last year, both shrubs were flowering in late July.

This year, however, Genistifolia did not begin flowering until mid/late August and Paradoxa shrubs were not flowering en masse until early September.

Although smaller insectivore birds such as thornbills and scrubwrens can be seen most of the year, once these shrubs were in bloom, their chirpy sounds seemed to be more apparent.

These birds feel comfortable feeding on the food provided by prickly acacia shrubs because predators are less likely to risk receiving a thorn in their side.

The lack of consistent heavy down pours in August combined with low sunshine hours, meant many wildflowers and shrubs were delayed from showing their glorious flower heads.

Unlike established trees which have vast root systems capable of drawing water many metres from their trunk, smaller plants don’t have the same luxury.

Not until late August/early September did substantial rain events occur.

As a result, wildflowers such as bearded heath and the yellow star lily were flowering two weeks later than last year. Suddenly, it was looking like it may be an indifferent wildflower season.

However, many wildflowers store carbohydrate energy in underground bulbs, biding their time for conditions to improve.

After a bleak six-week period, Melbourne received two 20 plus degree days on 18 and 22 September.

Due to a combination of vigorous rains and sunshine occurring, golden moth orchids, yam daisies and leopard orchids could be seen en masse; roughly around the same time they were appearing last year. Wildflower season was now looking like it may be reasonable!

The September rains also brought about another flush of mushrooms.

I spotted native, cup, disc and field mushrooms popping up their edible parts.

The warm day on 22 September also coincided with the first day that I noticed healthy and rich populations of insects and spiders.

This makes perfect sense, as many pollinating invertebrates require warm weather to become active, and they are waiting for flowering food sources to appear.

On this day, I spotted my first lasioglossum bee, many hoverflies, jumping spiders, a nicodamidae spider, several dragonflies, ants and many painted lady butterflies.

Wood in a jihad

By Peter Douglas La Trobe MP Jason Wood has engaged in a media offensive amid the biannual Council of Australian Governments meeting, spruiking his plans to toughen pre-emptive terrorism powers.

As Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, state ministers and local government leaders prepared to table issues at the 5 October meeting, Mr Wood took to various national media outlets - as well as social media - to raise the profile of his proposed changes.

Most significant among the proposals is giving police powers to request court ordered restrictions on any person of interest.

This would include enforcing counselling and curfews, restricting internet usage and any associations with other extremists. In addition, foreigners on a visa would be given one month to enrol in a de-radicalisation program, or face being deported.

Mr Wood said the threat of terrorism cells being active in the region was a real concern, particularly in the south of his electorate, which includes Gembrook-Cockatoo, Officer, Beaconsfield, Berwick and Narre Warren.

“At present, it’s a wait and see approach - police don’t

have the resources to constantly monitor anyone they have serious concerns about,” Mr Wood said.

“We don’t have those kinds of resources in Australia.

“Under these changes, these people of interest would face a court and potentially face community protection orders.

“It’s no good waiting until they’ve committed a terrorist attack. I believe this will make a positive difference to Australians.”

Mr Wood is a former police officer and member of the counter-terrorism unit.

He said the preventative detention legislation - as it stands - is inadequate and further powers need to be enacted.

Mr Wood has cited the case of Abdul Benbrika, who was convicted of leading a terrorist network and is believed to have considered targeting the MCG. Previously, Benbrika was ordered out of Australia three times, but eventually allowed to stay in the country.

Mr Wood spoke on Sky News, Channel 7 and wrote a detailed opinion piece in the Herald Sun. Reports have indicated terrorism is high on the COAG agenda, including making it an offence to possess instructional terrorism material and to make terrorism hoaxes.

Works to remove asbestos from schools across Monbulk have begun during the school holidays, according to Monbulk MP James Merlino.

Mr Merlino has announced that $66,000 is being invested under the Victorian School Asbestos Removal Program to remove asbestos from six schools.

Schools included in the funding include Ferny Creek Primary School, Mount Dandenong Primary School, Sassafras Primary School, Selby Primary School, The Patch Primary School and Upper Ferntree Gully Primary School.

The program, which is due to be completed early next year, includes removing asbestos from cabinets and safes, along with the removal and reinstatement of some cement sheet ceilings, walls and eaves.

Previously, the Victorian Government undertook a state-wide audit of government schools, which found 497 schools contained highrisk asbestos.

The high-risk schools were addressed in March this year.

Mr Merlino said the program was fulfiling a promise to remove asbestos from all Victorian schools.

“We’re giving parents, teachers and students in Monbulk peace of mind by removing asbestos that could pose a risk in the future,” he said.

“There’s nothing more important than the health and safety of our kids in Monbulk and we are getting on with the job of providing them with the best school facilities.”

Radio listens up for cash

By Effie Caloutas Yarra Valley FM is holding a fund-raising trivia night on Saturday 14 October from 7pm at Mt Evelyn RSL. There will be silent auctions, games, entertainment, prizes and giveaways with all proceeds going to the station.

The night will be held by two of Yarra Valley’s presenters, Neil Bull and Robert Jordan.

Ex-committee member Robert Jordan, who does two shows a week on the radio station, says that it’s important to raise as much as they can.

“We are hoping to raise $2000 on the night,” he said.

“If we don’t raise much, we end up using old microphones and chairs that are worn out.”

Community Connection Coordinator Greg Carrick said it should be an entertaining night for all guests.

“It will be a fun time for all involved,” he said.

“It will be a great time for people to put the presenters’ voices to the faces,” he said.

With prizes donated by business in the Yarra Valley, Mr Carrick said he hoped the station could get much-needed funds for the general costs of the station.

“We are always after good microphones,” he said.

Elsewhere, there are delightful plantings of lilacs and olives.

Better than ever in the field Under the keen guidance of President William Anker, the organising committee of the Wandin-Silvan Field Days is busily planning and preparing this year’s event in anticipation of building upon the successes of the past.

Now in its 48th year, the committee is looking forward to welcoming exhibitors and visitors from across the country to this significant local community event.

The Wandin-Silvan Field Days continues as a not-for-profit organisation, operated and run by a committee of local volunteers, some of whom have a history dating back to the first event. The field days foster community

involvement, with local schools and community groups providing catering and other services as their major fundraising opportunity.

The 2017 Wandin-Silvan Field Days will again provide an opportunity for exhibitors to present a diverse range of horticultural, agricultural and lifestyle products and services, as well as information and demonstrations, directly to patrons.

Highlights of this year’s event will include an educational and informative interactive display and talks from Black Snake Productions, a pet show run by students from Mount Lilydale Mercy College, the popular ‘gen-

eral interest’ marquee section, which features local regional products and demonstrations of cottage industries, as well as the Yarra Valley Machinery Preservation Society who will give a working presentation and display of machinery of yesteryear.

Great cash prizes totalling $750 will also be up for grabs, having been provided by the Wandin Seville Community Bank for the fifth annual photographic competition.

Additionally, Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority (in collaboration with Melbourne Water), Ribbons of Green (Yarra Ranges Council), Agribusiness

Yarra Valley, Yarra Ranges Landcare Network and Queensland Fruit Fly Awareness will also be working together in a collaborative effort to combine for a display that addresses land management concepts.

“Our committee understands the importance of farming in Victoria, and in particular that of the greater Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges, and we are very proud to maintain the tradition of being able to present this major regional event,” William said.

The committee actively encourages the participation of relevant exhibitors who are able to support the WandinSilvan Field Days theme. From general

In regards to comfort, Mr. Cook said that the driver and passenger are protected from the elements with the integrated cab which features both heating and air-conditioning; making the vehicle safer and more comfortable to drive without the hassle of wearing a mandatory helmet.

The market is held once every three months, with an additional bonus market in December for an opportunity to find that unique Christmas gift for a friend or loved one.

As Graham Bergroth of the Belgrave South Community House explained, the market is full of inspiring stallholders, food vans and exciting entertainment.

“If you are a fan of food, then come along for lunch or dinner,” Graham said.

“In addition to the yummy things sold at various stalls there are the food vans with so many foods of different ethnicities from around the world available right here in Belgrave South.

“While staying for a meal, there is plenty of entertainment to occupy your interest.

We have live music playing at every market from local artists show casing their talent with the acoustic vibe typical of life in the hills. The African drumming group can often be heard echoing through the trees as you approach the site, or it may just be the sound of a chainsaw sculpturing a work of art. The entertainment will continue in 2017 with a jumping castle, face

Jazz brings ’em to life The majestic township of Marysville will come alive this month when the Jazz and Blues Weekend hits town from Friday to Sunday, 20-22 October.

The annual award-winning event is set to celebrate music, food, wine and community with live performances, workshops, a street parade, live to air radio broadcast, and an auction of a Maton guitar signed by the weekend’s performing artists.

The auction of the Maton M225 Natural Series acoustic guitar and case will take place on Friday evening at the Community Centre Stadium between 8.30am and 9pm.

Joining the many hot acts at this year’s festival will be the Jackson Four, an internationally renowned blues, groove and swing jazz Hammond B3 quartet.

They’ve recently arrived back in the country from the UK and will before over the weekend of 20-22 October.

The quartet landed this week to the news that their new release, ‘Kool Kats - The Jackson Four’, is top five in the Australian Blues and Roots radio chart.

The Jackson Four will perform for the first time at the Marysville Jazz and Blues Weekend from 9.30pm to 11pm, on Saturday 21 October.

They will appear on stage one at the Vibe Hotel and Conference Centre.

Thirty years after the events of the original Blade Runner, replicants - a race of bioengineered slaves - are still banned on Earth, and Agent K (Ryan Gosling) works as a blade runner, which involves tracking and killing rogue replicants. K’s latest case of a missing person may hold dire ramifications for human society.

Directed by the extraordinary Denis Villeneuve (of Sicario and Arrival), Blade Runner 2049 is the best kind of sequel, in that it tells its own story by building upon the original film’s plot, rather than retreading or contradicting the past.

The plot is clear and streamlined, yet suffused with character depth and intriguing themes. While the primary conflict concerns a heated search for an individual who could up-end the entire world order, the profoundly moving narrative is driven by introspection, as several characters explore their own identities and their sense of humanity.

2049 may have one of the best-handled twists in cinema history. The film establishes a status quo very early on, then steadily challenges and subverts it, with every mind-blowing revelation feeling rational and spaced out well so that we can find our bearings.

Not only does Blade Runner 2049 transcend the original, with a more compelling protagonist, richer themes and a narrative with stronger forward momentum, but it may be the best film of the year so far.

Sing, dine, and have a funny time The show is hosted by writer and producer Andrew Malouf who spent 20 years as a tour manager and personal assistant to international artists such as James Brown, BB King, Alice Cooper, Suzie Quatro, to even the likes of Mickey Rooney.

Andrew has been touring this production for over 12 months now and feels that a large gap has been filled in the ever-growing Dinner Shows that incorporate the show as part of the dining experience.

The show begins when the guests arrive and finishes when they leave.

It’s just like a TV variety show, but without the cameras, Malouf says.

“We don’t even require a stage as the performers are mostly in the audience,” he said.

Walter doesn’t falter The Basin’s Blake Walter has made a memorable start to the season with a century on 1st XI debut, propelling the Bears to an opening victory against Mountain Gate.

Batting first at HV Jones, Blake’s 103 provided the visitors with a perfect platform to build a sizable target for the Gators, eventually amassing 3/275 from their allotted overs.

Recruits Jake Sherriff (57*) and Scott Vozzo (33) ensured support with the bat.

In response, Mitch Goddard (44) and Dewayne Bowden (37) put the Gators in a stable position to build up to a chase.

However, wickets to Matt Heskes (3/45) helped to scuttle the home team’s plans and secure opening points for The Basin.

Johnson Park returned to Norm Reeves Shield action as they hosted Belgrave.

Both Devenish brothers were able to affect the scoring - Steve with 47 and Andrew with 45 respectively.

A team effort saw the sharks to 8/191.

However the Magpies were able to successfully chase the target to 5/194, thanks to John Levell with 69, as well as Ibrahim “Adil” Jiva scoring 58.

Knox Gardens played out a tight affair against reigning premiers Knoxfield.

Lead by Jack Taylor (55), the Knights made 208 in an even team innings.

MONBULK RANGERS SOCCER Victorian teams - including 22 players from the Monbulk Rangers Soccer Club - excelled at the Christian Football Federation of Australia’s national titles in Sydney recently, bringing home Championship Cups in three age groups and narrowly losing a fourth.

Victoria won their grand finals in the CFFA Under 16s Boys, Under 18s Boys and Women’s divisions, with the state’s Men’s team narrowly losing their final in a penalty shootout.

Under 16 MRSC players Max Lamers and Tali Holman both won the prestigious Golden Boot awards in their respective boys and girls sections, while Max’s team mate Erwin Berger was named Player of the Finals.

Monbulk’s Tali Holman, Georgia Knight and Ella Tampiyappa were named in the Under 16s Girls All Stars team and Safin Clarke was named in the Under 16s Boys All Stars team, while Ariel Reyes was selected in the Under 14s Boys All Stars.

Monbulk Rangers president, Sam Knight, attended the nationals and said she was proud of the talented pool of players from the club.

Monbulk Rangers Under 16s player, Max Lamers, received the prestigious Golden Boot award as a member of the Victorian team at the recent CFFA National titles in Sydney. 173686 “They behaved very professionally both on and off the field in Sydney, and their victories were a reward for the tremendous hours the players put into training in the lead-up to the Nationals with our fantastic coaches, Sam and Pete Wilson,” she said.

Little Aths back on track

By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS Saturday was the opening round of track ‘n’ field for the 2017-‘18 summer for both Little Athletics and senior AV Shield competition.

Fantastic to see the turnout of eager athletes at Morrison Reserve, Mount Evelyn, for the opening round of Little Athletics.

Great to see so many familiar faces of our returning athletes and the amazing group of new athletes.

The club hopes you all enjoyed the fun, sunshine, made friends and are looking forward to doing it all again next weekend.

The senior team were spread between two venues for the opening round of the revamped AV Shield competition.

Athletes can now compete at any venue to score points for the club.

The club had great numbers at both Nunawading and Doncaster tracks with numerous personal bests recorded. Results will be on the website and Facebook pages when they become available.

Next weekend the seniors can compete at Frankston or Werribee while the Little Athletics Athletes enjoy the comfort of competing on our home track at Mount Evelyn.

Please remember that Little Athletics starts at 9am sharp with warms up 8.45am.

Police in the Yarra Valley are putting motorcycle safety at the forefront of their minds for spring, which is traditionally when fair weather riders return after an extended break over winter.

Operation Motosafe focuses on reducing injuries and fatal collisions and pays particular attention to the increased number of motorcycle riders during the spring months.

In an effort to reduce unsafe driving practices by all motorists, the operation will also see an increased police presence throughout October and coincide with the motorcycle Grand Prix on Sunday 22 October.

Over the past five years during the month of October, the eastern region of Victoria has sadly seen 47 people killed on their roads.

Of these 47 lives, 21 per cent were riders.

Eastern Region Road Policing Inspector Stewart Westfield said even though motorcyclists were vulnerable road users, it was up to everyone on the roads to take care.

“There’s no doubt that with the warmer weather upon us and with the Grand Prix coming up we do see an increase in the number of riders coming through our area,” Insp Westfield said.

“We all need to look after each other, no matter what mode of transport you’re in, stay within the speed limit and take regular breaks on long journeys.”

Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol, Acting Sergeant David McIlfatrick shared Insp Westfields views and urged riders to take care if they have taken a break from riding over winter, as their skills might have diminished in that time.

“Now that the weather is getting better, more riders are getting to the hills ... some haven’t ridden for a while and it does take some time getting used to the bike again,” Sgt McIlfatrick said.

“Motorbike collisions are down on the past few years, so we like to keep it that way.”
