Burglar led astray

By Cam Lucadou-Wells An “easily influenced” burglar has been jailed after pleading guilty to thefts during a break-in at a Hallam motel room.

Jesse Limb, 22, and two accomplices in a black Magna, had been captured on CCTV at Casey on Princes Motel about 11.30pm on 26 August.

During the burglary, Limb broke in through a room’s window. A TV, speaker and a laptop were stolen from the room.

The next day, Limb and three others in the Magna - which was without a rear number plate were pulled over by police patrolling in Hampton Park.

3.50am on 5 September. Limb was seen by police trying to unlock the 1998 Commodore with a key that didn’t fit the car. He claimed he was trying to move his friend’s car but had got the wrong key from his friend.

He had recently bought the car but hadn’t had it transferred to his name yet, he told police.

Residents blink first in birds’ laser showdown

By Brendan Rees A flock of Indian myna birds are still screeching at a Hallam resident’s bedroom window, despite repeated efforts by Casey council to move them on.

Vera Mezentsff said “you don’t get a break” and that she can’t remember the last time she had a proper night’s sleep.

She said the birds, which live in a tree on the nature strip on Charles Avenue, were an ongoing “problem”.

“I’m still being woken in the morning because their chirp is really loud,” Ms Mezentsff said.

“It’s shocking. They rule our life in a way because they wake you up and in the evening you have to put the TV up louder to drain out their screeches.”

Ms Mezentsff said that pointing a laser beam at the birds, which was recommended by Casey council to drive them away, had failed.

“I can’t do the lasering every night. When I stop they come back. In the morning there’s not as many.”

She said there were a number of the birds had “made that tree home,” adding “the noise travels so it’s hitting our bedroom windows”.

Casey councillor Wayne Smith said some council officers were against removing the tree and had put the issue in the “too hard basket.”

“If we own the tree then we need to do something about it. My first option is to just get rid of the tree. Remove the tree and immediately remove the problem.”

At the City of Casey’s 6 June meeting, Cr Smith successfully moved for action against the birds as a “matter of extreme urgency”.

He said there was “some improvement” after the council exhausted a number of control techniques including trapping, reduction of tree canopy and harbour, netting the tree and laser pointing.

“In the end I just want her (Ms Mezentsff) to have some peace and quiet that everyone else in Casey is able to have.”

Cr Smith said it was only recently that he received a call from Ms Mezentsff saying the squawking was “becoming unbearable” one morning at 5am.

He said the laser beam had worked in “short bursts” and while it was not ideal, it was relieving the problem.

“It scares the birds off. The RSPCA don’t like it because they believe it’s potentially damaging the

The City of Casey is reviewing the options and opportunities to upgrade the facility in line with community needs, and “maximise what the site can achieve”.

Councillor Wayne Smith told the council’s meeting on Tuesday 3 October that the concept of closing the pool had been raised over the years and “never been received well.”

He said council would ultimately like to make the pool indoor heated.

“If we can attract some state and federal funding that would be our aim.

“Doveton is a very long established community and they some of the elderly people who don’t use the pool would fight to death to keep that pool so it’s very important to improve it,” he said.

He said the council was looking at revitalising the water play area.

“It’s not adventurous enough. We want to expand it and make it more interesting.

And make that a destination so you’re not just coming just because of the pool. Young families would come because of that play area.

“We need to do something to revitalise it.

We need to work collaboratively with the community,” Cr Smith said.

birds are naturally nesting somewhere else now.

“Probably some of the birds are staying there because that’s where they are nesting.

“There were hundreds of birds at one stage,” he said.

The “easily influenced” Limb had struggled with impulsivity as well as drug abuse, homelessness since he was 14, an intellectual disability and an acquired brain injury, she said.

He’d been recently admitted to Dandenong Hospital with suicidal ideation, but had no diagnosed mental health issue.

Limb said that he’d tried, and found various jobs to help occupy himself. When unemployed, he associated with “very bad people”.

“I lasted nine months, miss,” he said.

“When it comes to work, I can work like a madman.”

Magistrate Pauline Spencer told Limb he was “going around in circles” and struggling to stay in trouble and away from drug users.

“I think you know what you need to do.”

Limb was jailed for four months without a corrections order.

A Hallam manufacturer has won a six-year contract to help power Melbourne’s next fleet of 65 high-capacity trains.

Austbreck will build 260 train pantographs - the train-top systems that collect electricity by contacting overhead lines.

The contract supports 35 jobs at the firm, and is expected to create new ones.

Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan, who announced the contract, said the High Capacity Metro Trains Project “maximises” Victorian jobs directly and in the supply chain.

“The (project) highlights this government’s strong commitment to leveraging jobs, skills and economic growth for the whole of Victoria.”

The government has set a target of at least 60 per cent local content - above the mandatory benchmark of 50 per cent for state projects.

It expects about 1100 jobs to be created during the public-private-partnership project.

100 years ago 11 October 1917 Plain fancy and poster ball On Thursday 4th a plain fancy and poster ball was held at the Dandenong drill hall, in aid of the fund to provide Christmas boxes for local volunteers at the front.

It is estimated that close on £50.00 will be realised.

The financial results are remarkable when the decidedly unfavourable weather conditions are taken into account and the committee of management must feel highly gratified.

50 years ago 10 October 1967 Council stock offer Dandenong’s lush pastures in about 170 acres of the Police Paddocks will be offered by the council for the relief of drought-stricken

stock from other parts of the state. At Monday night’s meeting it was agreed to make the offer to the proper authority.

Due to the spring flush there was a danger of it becoming a fire hazard again this year.

Conditions on grazing should be supervised and the watering of stock from stand pipes in Churchill Park.

20 years ago 6 October 1997 City goes hip Dandenong shopping strips will look something like Brunswick Street under a bold proposal to revamp the central activities district.

Greater Dandenong council urban planner Mr Matt Slavin has come up with a proposal to dress up the city and attract more visitors.

The Dandenong facade improvement plan proposes incentives to traders to decorate their facades.

The council would employ artists to work with traders to dress their shop fronts.

“The shops and businesses would be decorated in an artistic way which would reflect what the business was about,” Mr Slavin said.

“The idea is based on a similar concept to what has been happening in Brunswick Street.

“The area is bright and colourful with many shop fronts decorated with murals, art work and three-dimensional sculptures.”

The council would help fund the improvements by matching traders on a dollar-fordollar basis up to $2500.

Mr Slavin said the council would control the program, appointing artists to work with participating shops.

He said the council was also investigating the viability of developing a restaurant presence in Thomas Street.

“The area needs a strong theme to make it

stand out from the rest,” he said.

5 years ago 8 October 2012 Legal Aid denied for sheep owner Vu Victoria Legal Aid has refused to support Springvale mechanic Vu Ho’s Supreme Court appeal to keep his pet sheep at home.

Mr Ho faces a $150,000-plus bill from his legal stoush with Greater Dandenong Council in fighting a $225 fine and orders to evict his sheep Baa. His case was rejected by the Supreme Court in May. Since then, a cash-strapped Mr Ho has dismissed a pro bono legal team and will represent himself in the appeal.

“It’s scary representing myself because my English is bad,” he said.

“I wish I could get proper lawyers who are willing to work for me for the right cause.”

‘Yes’ will end pain of rejection The last year or so has been stressful and painful for many in the LGBTI community.

First we had endless attacks on the Safe Schools program, which sought to support and reduce bullying of young LGBTI people in schools, and then a national debate about the humanity and equality of gay people and their relationships.

We’re trying to live our lives, just like everyone else, but it’s like we’re carrying around the burden of these national conversations too. It doesn’t go away, and it hurts.

The LGBTI community has endured fear, bigotry and violence for years.

We’ve made progress slowly over time, and achieved many rights that have made it easier for us to live our lives happily in Australia.

However, there are still people who have hatred in their hearts toward us, and this debate has given them a giant platform and a megaphone.

to shout about marriage equality! Instead, their strategy is a scare campaign about the other things that marriage equality could lead to.

In fact, transgender Australians faced a lot of discrimination in their lives before this campaign came along. The last thing they need is a hate campaign at their door.

My wife and I have been together for 14 years, and married for six. We married in Australia, surrounded by our family and friends, but our government and our nation wouldn’t recognise it.

We also married in Canada in a small ceremony because it meant something to us that any government around the world who had legalised gay marriage would now see our relationship for what it was: equal.

I have both wedding dates engraved on the inside of my ring. There’s a space there for the date that marriage equality is passed in this country.

I look forward to getting that date engraved, and celebrating with my wife and my two beautiful children.

marriage. My children are happy, healthy and well adjusted. Studies repeatedly show that the kids of gay parents do really well, and the only thing that causes them suffering is bigotry from those who don’t accept their parents.

So, if we want to protect the kids of gay people, we need to work on the bigotry, not stop gay people from getting married and having kids!

The ‘no’ campaign’s second major strategy is whipping up fear about transgender people, screaming hysterically about ‘radical gender theory’ in the hopes that people will get scared and confused and vote ‘no’ on the postal survey.

Not only is this a ridiculous distraction technique, it shows how bigoted the ‘no’ campaign really is.

All Australians deserve equality, respect and safety, and transgender people do not deserve to be targeted and harmed as part of a debate about marriage equality.

Councils to launch tourism plan A bold plan will see Cardinia and Casey councils join forces to market the area as a leading Australian tourism destination.

The draft Casey Cardinia Visitation Strategy 2017-’20, approved by the council at a recent meeting, reveals ambitious plans to grow tourism in the area.

It cites local attractions Emerald Park Lake, Puffing Billy, Fountain Gate Shopping Centre, Cranbourne Gardens, Moonlit Sanctuary, The Old Cheese Factory, and Gumbuya Park and Bunjil Place - once underway works are complete - as places to visit.

City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said tourism was critical for economic growth and generating jobs but also “parading both cities in terms of what we have to offer.”

“From Cardinia’s perspective there are wineries and many other attractions from Casey’s per-

spective. “We’ve got the new Bunjil Place which will open in October and will bring international performances to the region for the very first time,” Cr Aziz said.

“Cardinia is an economic partner of ours and we see ourselves as a region rather than two individual councils. Anything that brings more people and spending to the region is something that will be supported by both councils.”

“This initiative has been in the making for a whole decade ever since I’ve been on council and it’s an exciting prospect for the whole region,” he said.

Cardinia councillor Michael Schilling said all too often people were driving through the shire to reach other tourism destinations such as Gippsland.

“And we don’t want Cardinia to be the place people stop for a bite to eat. We want them to

come, stay and enjoy,” Cr Schilling said. “Cardinia is a wonderful place, with a number of wonderful attributes that we want to show off.”

The council said it wanted to make the most of the “distinct advantage” the region’s close proximity to other tourist destinations such as the Yarra Valley, Gippsland and Mornington Peninsula brought.

Cardinia Shire believes Casey Cardinia too could become a tourism hotspot if the councils joined forces.

“From a tourism perspective, the inclusion of the City of Casey is very important, as it contains a large number of the region’s significant activities and attractions,” its draft strategy states. “(The City of Casey’s) attributes both complement and enrich the traditionally more ruralbased Cardinia Shire. Their combined products and experiences offer particular appeal to fami-

lies and considerable potential for a strong visitor market.”

Both Cardinia and Casey councils will contribute $50,000 for a tourism budget for the 2017-’18 financial year to get the strategy up and running.

Cardinia Shire said the draft Casey Cardinia Visitation Strategy provided “a strong plan to help strengthen the region’s tourism industry and provide opportunities for tourism operators and affiliated businesses”.

Similar to other significant tourism destinations across Australia, the document outlines a detailed three-year marketing action plan that will be led by industry in the form of an independent regional board.

This board will include members from the Casey Cardinia Tourism Advisory Committee (CCTAC) and Casey Cardinia Libraries’ CEO Chris Buckingham.

Sisters act up This is Eden’s second year in the show, following in the footsteps of sister Paris.

Paris has been in the show three times as a model, but now finds herself holding the mic as the interval act.

She famously joined her godfather Gary Pinto for Carols by Candlelight at the age of seven and has been getting steady singing gigs ever since.

She has been giving sister Eden some tips while she practices her pop medley.

“I just walk around my house annoying my family singing,” she said.

Mum Natalie says she’s happy to be keeping her children focused and busy with some extracurricular activities.

“It’s good fun,” she says, adding she’ll be cheering from the audience for her two girls.

“I get to show off all my cool poses,” she told the Journal News, adding that she liked gymnastics.

Suicide due to workplace bullying or workplace trauma has been on the increase over the last decade.

As awareness of mental health issues has increased, so too the law has grown and shifted to reflect community expectations about safety in the workplace.

Although psychiatric injury claims are common under WorkCover, workers who commit suicide due to their psychiatric injuries, or as a result of bullying, fall into a separate category.

Work-related suicide occurs across a multitude of industries.

Research has shown that construction workers are six times more likely to die from suicide than a workplace accident.

The Victoria Police Mental Health Review in 2016 revealed that there is an increased risk of suicide for members of Victoria Police than the general public.

Since 2000, there have been 23 suicides of Victoria Police members. Another report found that people working in protective or emergency services had higher rates of suicide than the general population.

Bullying and exposure to trauma are not the only causes of workplace suicide.

A cultural phenomenon, known as ‘karoshi’ in Japan, is a death resulting from overwork and stress.

In 2015, a 24-year-old worker at a Japanese advertising agency committed suicide after being forced to work extremely long hours.

By Brendan Rees As summer approaches, two of Casey’s aquatic centres are throwing their support behind a program to prevent drownings, offering free water safety lessons.

Casey RACE and Casey ARC have been working with local community groups and schools to deliver free water safety sessions for the benefit of all pool and aquatic users.

Sessions include pool hygiene practices, potential dangers in a swimming pool environment,

general pool rules and a range of other subjects that people face when around water and at public swimming pools.

These water safety demonstrations are been provided to numerous schools, kinders and community groups.

YMCA Community Engagement co-ordinator Tori Norris said education was the key to safety around water.

“We hope that by running these sessions, we can spread the water safety message and decrease the amount of incidents that happen

at our pools,” she said. “We have a lot of different people visiting our pools, including children and people from many different cultures.

“These sessions also aim to help multi-cultural communities understand Australian water safety practices better.

“We want to limit the barriers for all in our community and allow them to be safer around water.”

Show was the real place to go While the Melbourne Show might be taking the limelight these school holidays, kids in the Doveton area were just as entertained at the Doveton Show.

Billed as the low-cost, family-friendly alternative to the Melbourne Show, the event attracted thousands to Myuna Farm on 24 September.

Sheep shearing, goat milking, wool spinning and a talking cockatoo were just some of the unique experiences at the show.

Strong winds kicked up a lot of dust but festivalgoers kept the smiles on their faces as they enjoyed the family day out.

While the animals were a big crowd favourite, a few local relics also made for an interesting pitstop.

Nicholas Fuller from the Port Phillip Historical Machinery Society brought out a Sandwich engine from around 1925 to show off to the curious crowd.

The show is an annual, volunteer-run event over the September school holidays.

The main list has been retained and Matt Golding remains and will be hoping for a big season with the bat as he captain-coaches them in what will be a highly competitive Turf 2 season.

They have managed to retain virtually all of their players and will focus on developing its players within the club and hopefully having a strong season across all grades.

Having star all-rounder Rodni Kumara around for another season means there is a genuine gun for the young players to continue to learn off.

After finishing as runners-up in Turf 3 last season, the Lakers can certainly match it some of the middle-rung sides this season and will be hoping to push their way near or into finals.

It’s likely to cause some short-term pain with the club committed to playing youngsters from the ages of 17 to 22.

The club is also working through the process of electing a coach and captain for the season.

Lyndale is hoping its younger players can help steer it on the right path.

It has last year’s leading wicket-taker in Kenneth Smart but have added quickie Shrimantha Fernando from Moorabbin to shore up the bowling stocks.

Luke Rhodes from Oakleigh adds some Subbies experience and will also add some quality to the line-up.

With 13 junior teams featuring in the 2017/18 season, there is plenty of talent floating around St Brigid’s/St Louis.

A quality player back home in India, Vab Deshpande will add plenty of quality in what will be a younger looking but more energetic 1st XI. Finals can be achieved if all goes right, but getting more games into their youngsters is also a major focus ahead of the season.

Pup up-and-comer Hasten Slowly shoots ahead Promising pup Hasten Slowly has announced himself on the big stage with a dominant 6 1/2 length win in Thursday night’s Vale Ken Virtue Maiden final.

His win backed up an impressive race track debut in Sunday’s heat as he pounced to the lead early and quickly made the race his own. His time of 29.57 was the fastest of the 12 races on the night.

His trainer Angela Langton was full of praise following ‘Ollie’s’ win.

“I couldn’t ask for more from him, he’s been super in his two starts. His heat run was the first time he’d been over 515 metres.

“He’s trialled fast and has been schooled around here - we knew pretty early on that he’s got a fair bit of ability,” said Langton.

The win meant a lot to Langton given the recent death of Hasten Slowly’s mother, Heidi Go Seek, who was a special part of the kennel.

“Unfortunately she passed away after having a litter of pups. We believe she had a heart attack. It was pretty sad as she was special to us. Hopefully

WOMEN’S NATIONAL BASKETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 1 A slow starting Dandenong Rangers outfit went down to a Liz Cambage inspired Melbourne Boomers to open the 2017/18 WNBL season on Thursday night.

The 26-year-old Australian Olympian and WNBL legend - who hasn’t been seen in the Australian Domestic scene for five years - was at centre stage in front of a capacity crowd at Dandenong Stadium for the Boomers, the team she won a WNBL MVP for in 2011.

A new look Rangers’ side took to the court, but it was the Boomers who got the early jump courtesy of Cambage who immediately got the away side in front with a faultless jump-shot that set the tone for the entire match.

Despite some impressive work only moments later by Rangers’ star Sara Blicavs, the Boomers were shooting hot, and raced out to a commanding 13-29 quarter time lead after the Rangers fought back later in the term but couldn’t quite reel it back in.

It realistically snuffed out any chance of the Rangers pulling off a remarkable comeback, and despite finding their groove in the second term, could only reduce the margin back to 13-points at half time.

In a tough contest in the second half, the Boomers always found a second gear despite repeat attempts at a comeback by the Rangers, but the first quarter deficit ultimately proved a bridge too far.

Fresh off her playing her first game with the Rangers, import Kayla Pedersen shared her thoughts about the opening round clash “It would have been nice to have a win, but it was alright,” she said post-match.

“They came out really well, and offensively we didn’t really have a flow - I think we really hurt ourselves.”

The Rangers get the perfect chance to bounce back with a grand final rematch against last year’s premiers, Sydney Uni Flames.
