Carols cancelled

By Helen Velissaris Dandenong’s Carols by Candlelight event will not go ahead this year, because a viable location has not been found.

The Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce, which has organised the event for 69 years, formally advised Greater Dandenong Council late last week that it would not be hosting the event.

“When we looked at the cost of infrastructure to stage it, and the income we were going to get in support, it was not realistic for the chamber to lose on staging it,” chamber president Paul Broom said.

For the past two years the chamber had used Harmony Square to host the event but a lack of community support and lower than expected attendance saw the location scrapped this year.

The chamber was looking to return to the event’s original Dandenong Park location but without the sound shell and stage the costs of hosting the event were piling up.

A temporary stage would need to be built, generators brought in and toilets provided.

Despite the council offering a grant and sponsors also contributing funds, organisers said the costs were overwhelming.

“We’ve looked at the numbers every which

way and it just was not viable for us to do that,” Mr Broom said. On Thursday, Mayor Jim Memeti said he was disappointed to hear of the decision.

“The council was notified this week that the Dandenong Chamber of Commerce had decided not to proceed with its carols event this year.

“We are obviously disappointed, given the history of the event.

“At this stage councillors are yet to formally discuss this matter,” he said.

In Brief Keysy to light up for festival Keysborough will celebrate the Festival of Lights with a full-day fair.

Tatterson Park will host the Australian Indian Innovations (AIII) Diwali event from 11.30am to 9.30pm on Sunday 15 October.

Entry is free and the day will include camel rides, kids’ rides, food and variety stalls, henna and tattoo stalls, non-stop music and fireworks at 8.30pm.

There’s also free parking.

Hindus, Sikhs and Jains celebrate Diwali for different reasons, but the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil is the common theme. The five-day celebration includes food, fireworks, gifts, coloured sand, and special candles and lamps.

Tatterson Park is at Springers Leisure Centre, 400 Cheltenham Road, Keysborough.

Dandenong Market will also celebrate the festival of lights, from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 22 October.

There’ll be traditional live music and Bollywoodinspired performances, food trucks and stalls, free henna hand painting and more.

Apprenticeship forum Noble Park’s Eddie Blanchfield has worked on Melbourne's railway substations for 30 years.

Keeping track of trains

By Helen Velissaris Noble Park’s Eddie Blanchfield has fought off snakes in the pursuit of keeping Melbourne’s trains going.

The 77-year-old still remembers the unsettling encounters with the slithery reptiles along the patches of long grass he had to traverse to get to the train substations.

For more than 30 years, Eddie maintained and repaired Melbourne’s substations that fed power to the trains.

Living right near Noble Park station, trains have been Eddie’s life. As a teenage apprentice

in 1955, Eddie remembers learning to repair the whirring cogs and moving parts of the old-fashioned rotary substations before they were upgraded to solid state models.

“It was a big deal, a huge step forward,” he remembers of the new technology.

Now he’s a witness to another big upgrade entering the network.

The first of nine new substations were switched on in Dandenong in September as the network makes way for high capacity trains.

The newer substations are needed to provide reliable power to longer trains and new signalling infrastructure.

Although not really visible to the general public, the substations provide a vital conversion of power into the right voltage needed to power railways.

Crews have been taking advantage of the school holidays to continue level crossing removal work on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines, installing more than 17 kilometres of overhead wiring between Dandenong and Yarraman, and completing 200 metres of track upgrade at Mile Creek.

For Eddie, the train repair work still goes on through his son, who now works as an engineer for Metro.

Those thinking about entering a trade or looking for an apprenticeship are invited to take part in the Youth Apprenticeship and Traineeship Forum.

The forum will also give tips on the state of the industry, what apprentices can do to stand out and how to apply for jobs.

The forum’s stalls will provide an opportunity to link up with organisations that are offering traineeships and apprenticeships.

The Young Leaders group is a council run program that helps develop leadership skills and promote community participation for 16-25 year olds.

Those interested in pursuing an apprenticeship or traineeship are encouraged to register by calling 9793 2155.

The event will be held on Wednesday 18 October at the City of Greater Dandenong Council Chamber from 9.30am to 12.30pm.

Danger road is a rat-run death trap say residents

By Casey Neill An Adelaide Street resident fears a child could fall victim to reckless truck drivers using the Dandenong road as a rat-run.

Peter Lourens has lived there for 35 years and said traffic volume was constantly growing.

“A lot of people use this street as an access to Princes Highway and Heatherton Road,” he said.

He contacted Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan about the issue, and he raised it at the Monday 11 September council meeting.

Cr Kirwan suggested speed humps would de-

ter drivers using the short-cut to avoid the Gladstone and Heatherton roads junction.

Acting engineering services director Craig Cinquegrana said his team would take traffic counts in the street after the school holidays so traffic engineers could assess the situation and, if necessary, determine an appropriate solution.

Mr Lourens told the Journal that the trucks used Adelaide Street “like a speedway”.

He said his son was a truck driver and had commented on the unsafe speeds other drivers were travelling through at.

Mr Lourens said there was a day-care centre at the end of the street.

“Since I’ve been here, we all got big blocks of land, units have gone up and we’ve got all different cultures living in the street,” he said.

“They’ve got little ones.

“All it takes is somebody’s little one to come out of the driveway and not think.”

He said a driver ploughed into his front fence in recent years.

“They didn’t leave their name, address or whatever,” he said.

“Neighbours heard the bang but thought there’d been accident on Heatherton Road.”

Mr Lourens thinks speed humps “would be a good solution to slow people down”.

In Brief Man attacked, wallet stolen A man has been hit in the head and his wallet stolen in a brazen attack by at least six youths in Dandenong.

The 41-year-old man had just finished his shopping at Palm Plaza in the early evening on 2 October when he spotted a group of about 10 teenagers with skateboards, police say.

The group yelled out at him and asked for money, but the man told them he can’t help them and walked on.

A short time later, the man felt a blow to the back of his head and fell to the ground.

Looking up he saw a man standing over him who demanded his wallet.

The robber then reached into the man’s pocket and took his wallet before running off.

Dandenong police urge anyone who saw the attack or knows any information to contact Crime Stoppers.

Drugs haul: two charged Two people have been charged after a huge quantity of ice and weapons were found in houses in Dandenong and Seaford.

Police raided two properties on 25 September, where they arrested a 33-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man from Seaford.

A gun, ammunition and a taser were uncovered as well as a large amount of ice, police said.

“It was a substantial amount,” Detective Sergeant Craig West told the Dandenong Journal.

“A trafficable amount is six grams but (we found) 15 times that.”

Both were charged with trafficking and possessing methamphetamine, and the man was also charged with possessing the unregistered gun, ammunition and the taser.

The man was remanded, and was set to appear at the Frankston Magistrates’ Court on 26 September, while the woman was bailed to face Frankston Magistrates’ Court on 26 November.

Sun shines on solar loans Toyota officially closes its local manufacturing operations with its last Australian-made car.

Waving goodbye and saying hello to uncertain future

By Helen Velissaris Keysborough manufacturers who supplied Toyota’s plants for years have said goodbye to an era.

The last Camry rolled off Toyota’s production line in Altona on Tuesday, ending 54 years of Australian production.

More than 3000 people attended a ceremony at the Altona factory, with current and former employees, suppliers, affiliate companies and officials from Toyota Japan on hand.

Venture DMG managing director Dean Lomas was at the ceremony alongside fellow Greater Dandenong suppliers and said it was a sad day for Australian manufacturing.

He is closing down his Keysborough factory at the end of the year. The Toyota contracts made up more than 50 per cent of the workload of the Keysborough workshop, which supplied plastics and mouldings to the car maker.

“It’s almost unbelievable that a country such as

this can do away with the whole industry,” he told the Dandenong Journal.

“The automotive industry is a breeding ground for technology and capabilities that are used in other industries and other sectors.

“It’s incredibly sad.”

He said the effects of Toyota’s closure will be felt for a long time in the broader manufacturing industry.

Toyota announced its impending closure in 2014 and has provided its 3900 workforce with transition programs. Mr Lomas said Toyota has been excellent in the transition phase, and assisted its suppliers as well.

While a few workers will be transferred to other locations, Mr Lomas admits there will be layoffs from DMG’s Keysborough factory.

Next door to DMG is TNG Industries, which has recently gone from about a 50-person workforce to 11.

Specialising in metal pressing and moulding,

TNG Industries used to supply the motor car industry but moved away from it to start supplying more general engineering projects.

Having been in business for 47 years, chief executive Robert Stewart said he doesn’t know if it will last to his 50th.

“We’ve got millions of dollars’ worth of plant equipment which we’re holding on to by the fingertips,” he said.

“We only run three days a week. At our peak we were running 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

At 76, he says he is not worried about himself but will be working until he “can’t walk anymore” to ensure his workers have a future.

He thinks Australia has outpriced itself from the market thanks to high wage costs and taxes.

Toyota joins Ford and Holden in ceasing local production this year.

It will retain 1300 workers and its 270 existing dealer network sites.

Greater Dandenong businesses will be able to borrow money to buy solar panels and other sustainable energy alternatives and pay it back via their council rates.

The long term, fixed interest rate loans are being offered via the Sustainable Melbourne Fund, a trust set up to support businesses reduce their environmental footprint and cut energy costs.

Dandenong South recycling business Smart Recycling is the first to sign up for the loan and expects to buy a 100kw solar panel system for its site.

The panels are expected to save the company more than $28,000 a year on their energy bill, according to Greater Dandenong Council.

Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti hopes the council-based financing system will help the area become one of Australia’s most sustainable cities.

“Environmental upgrade agreements can be used to fund building works that improve energy efficiency, reduce waste and cut water use,” he said in a statement.

Greater Dandenong council urban planner Mr Matt Slavin has come up with a proposal to dress up the city and attract more visitors.

The Dandenong facade improvement plan proposes incentives to traders to decorate their facades.

The council would employ artists to work with traders to dress their shop fronts.

“The shops and businesses would be decorated in an artistic way which would reflect what the business was about,” Mr Slavin said.

“The idea is based on a similar concept to what has been happening in Brunswick Street.

“The area is bright and colourful with many shop fronts decorated with murals, art work and three-dimensional sculptures.”

The council would help fund the improvements by matching traders on a dollar-fordollar basis up to $2500.

Mr Slavin said the council would control the program, appointing artists to work with participating shops.

He said the council was also investigating the viability of developing a restaurant presence in Thomas Street.

“The area needs a strong theme to make it

stand out from the rest,” he said.

5 years ago 8 October 2012 Legal Aid denied for sheep owner Vu Victoria Legal Aid has refused to support Springvale mechanic Vu Ho’s Supreme Court appeal to keep his pet sheep at home.

Mr Ho faces a $150,000-plus bill from his legal stoush with Greater Dandenong Council in fighting a $225 fine and orders to evict his sheep Baa. His case was rejected by the Supreme Court in May. Since then, a cash-strapped Mr Ho has dismissed a pro bono legal team and will represent himself in the appeal.

“It’s scary representing myself because my English is bad,” he said.

“I wish I could get proper lawyers who are willing to work for me for the right cause.”

‘Yes’ will end pain of rejection The last year or so has been stressful and painful for many in the LGBTI community.

First we had endless attacks on the Safe Schools program, which sought to support and reduce bullying of young LGBTI people in schools, and then a national debate about the humanity and equality of gay people and their relationships.

We’re trying to live our lives, just like everyone else, but it’s like we’re carrying around the burden of these national conversations too. It doesn’t go away, and it hurts.

The LGBTI community has endured fear, bigotry and violence for years.

We’ve made progress slowly over time, and achieved many rights that have made it easier for us to live our lives happily in Australia.

However, there are still people who have hatred in their hearts toward us, and this debate has given them a giant platform and a megaphone.

to shout about marriage equality! Instead, their strategy is a scare campaign about the other things that marriage equality could lead to.

Personally I think it’ll just lead to a happier, more open-minded Australia, and a lot of gay weddings as people who have waited for years finally marry their partners, but the ‘no’ campaign would have you believe the sky will fall in.

Their first major strategy has been implying that gay people harm their children, so our families shouldn’t be given the tick of approval via

marriage. My children are happy, healthy and well adjusted. Studies repeatedly show that the kids of gay parents do really well, and the only thing that causes them suffering is bigotry from those who don’t accept their parents.

So, if we want to protect the kids of gay people, we need to work on the bigotry, not stop gay people from getting married and having kids!

The ‘no’ campaign’s second major strategy is whipping up fear about transgender people, screaming hysterically about ‘radical gender theory’ in the hopes that people will get scared and confused and vote ‘no’ on the postal survey.

Not only is this a ridiculous distraction technique, it shows how bigoted the ‘no’ campaign really is.

All Australians deserve equality, respect and safety, and transgender people do not deserve to be targeted and harmed as part of a debate about marriage equality.

In fact, transgender Australians faced a lot of discrimination in their lives before this campaign came along. The last thing they need is a hate campaign at their door.

My wife and I have been together for 14 years, and married for six. We married in Australia, surrounded by our family and friends, but our government and our nation wouldn’t recognise it.

We also married in Canada in a small ceremony because it meant something to us that any government around the world who had legalised gay marriage would now see our relationship for what it was: equal.

I have both wedding dates engraved on the inside of my ring. There’s a space there for the date that marriage equality is passed in this country.

I look forward to getting that date engraved, and celebrating with my wife and my two beautiful children.

Firearm threat to father

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A bailed man, who had been subject to 24 intervention orders, confronted his father with an imitation firearm during a domestic dispute in Springvale.

The man had demanded that his father install CCTV around the house because the man believed he was being followed, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 25 September.

He sent several text messages of a similar ilk to such as: “Just get the f***ing cameras before I shoot you in the leg.”

On 2 September, the man knocked at the front door and demanded money and CCTV cameras. The father asked the man to leave

and was pushed backwards. The son produced what appeared to be a handgun, walked up to the father and raised the weapon from half a metre away.

“Do you want to see me put a red-cap in your head?”

The next day, police, including a critical response team, arrested the man in Altona.

They seized multiple imitation guns, including the weapon which was believed to have been pulled on his father.

Inside the car, they found imitation dashmounted police lights and .727 calibre ammunition.

Among the charges he faced were threats to kill and being a prohibited person with an imita-

tion firearm. At the time he was on bail for threats to kill, to inflict injury and to sexual assault as well as driving matters.

Police informant Acting Sergeant Craig Milne said he had no confidence that the man would abide by bail conditions.

The accused had a “history of violence and drugs”. He was an “unacceptable risk” of endangering the father, Act Sgt Milne said.

Magistrate Pauline Spencer said she wouldn’t consider bail without better support in the community for the man.

Corrections officers had found the man unsuitable for a CREDIT bail treatment program.

The matter was adjourned for a further bail hearing on 27 September.

Kids find their animals within Noble Park students channelled their inner warthog, meerkat and lion for a song and dance extravaganza.

St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School presented The Lion King Junior at Nazareth College on Friday 15 September.

The students learnt their lines and moves in class and during lunchtimes and put their craft skills to the test on their costumes.

The Lion King has been popular in Greater Dandenong in recent weeks.

More CCTV and a streetscape upgrade are slowly heading for Dandenong’s Hemmings Street.

At the Monday 28 August Greater Dandenong Council meeting, councillor Matthew Kirwan asked for an update on the Hemmings Street shopping strip CCTV project, including when it was projected to be finished.

He also asked what the process was for developing streetscape upgrade concept plans.

Engineering services director Julie Reid said installing the remaining cameras and equipment was subject to approvals from United Energy because of the proposed use of its poles for power supply.

“One camera is in operation in Hemmings Street at the moment which is the one in the car park opposite the IGA supermarket as this was not reliant on United Energy,” she said.

“Discussions are ongoing about the conditions of approval and no installation date has been agreed for the remaining CCTV as yet.

On the streetscape upgrade, Ms Reid said it was proposed that the research and data collection phase for the project would take place before Christmas so that consultation could be undertaken in the new calendar year.

“The consultation opportunities for interested stakeholders will be developed as part of a project plan,” she said.

Boost for job seeker skills A Dandenong job-seeker service will benefit from a $620,000 boost.

On Thursday 30 August, Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced the State Government cash for Chisholm’s Skills and Jobs Centre.

The service helps more than 200 job seekers each month to access skill development, job readiness, and training and career support to find employment.

The Dandenong Skills and Jobs Centre team also delivers career and job-ready lectures at high schools and has developed job-ready training in pre-apprenticeship courses.

Manoeuvring around jungle mazes, traversing tunnels and even pulling cars by rope was all in a day’s work for the students from Lyndale Secondary College.

They were thrown into the deep end of an 18 station obstacle course on Thursday 21 September where the students’ problem solving skills were tested.

The event saw Lyndale’s five houses, Munro, Oakwood, Gladstone, Halton and Lyndale compete in a variety of challenges, including car pulling, slip ‘n’ slides, tunnels and large inflatable obstacles.

A special Students v Staff challenge had students giggling at their teachers’ attempts along the course and relishing the competition.

The objective of the day was to encourage group co-operation, challenge the students physically and mentally and build confidence in tackling new problems.

“Students tend to remain overly passive when confronted with challenges,” House co-ordinator

Daniel Noonan said. “Self-esteem and confidence are key targets of such a venture. Students start to realise they can do it, if only they first make and attempt.”

The event was open to all students and staff, and nearby primary schools were also invited to have a go at the course.

Night streets are a risk A Dandenong support service says parking restrictions are putting staff and clients at risk.

Greater Dandenong Council accepted a letter from CatholicCare Family Services signed by 41 people at its Monday 11 September meeting.

The letter asked the council to review restricting parking for businesses around Princes Highway and for all-day paid parking to support employees, clients and local businesses.

The council forwarded the request to the relevant business unit for consideration.

The letter said parking around 33-35 Princes Highway was restricted to two hours at $1.80 per hour.

“On site we have limited parking in the building,” it said.

“Most workers and clients are forced to park as far as the end of the skate park, end of Close Avenue, Hemmings Street, and on the opposite

side of the road service lane on Princes Highway between James Street and Henty Street, and sometimes at Coles.”

The letter said that given the nature of CatholicCare’s work - including counselling, family mediation and group work - staff found it difficult to move their cars every two hours.

“Two days every week ... our services are open until 8pm and often some workers without parking in the building are forced to walk isolated streets to their cars,” the letter said.

“Given the external vulnerabilities around the Dandenong area, and limited lighting and safety on the side streets, we believe it is not safe for our distressed and vulnerable clients, and our staff who provide support, to be walking to isolated parking areas.

“In the last couple of months, we have had incidents in the evening that have required police

involvement. On those occasions and following, staff and distressed clients were required to be accompanied to their cars.

“Had there been parking close by, our staff and clients would have felt safe and empowered to go their cars without the fear of looming danger.”

The letter said VicRoads roadworks on Princes Highway were exacerbating the situation, with tradesmen and women and machinery taking up spaces.

“As a community agency we would greatly appreciate your support to our request, as we endeavour to make our community safer for our staff and clients,” it concluded.

“Communities which are perceived safer encourage active participation that build relationships, increase revenue for local businesses, and support the health and wellbeing of everyone.”

Squeeze on gamblers Dandenong gamblers will soon face a limit on how much money they can withdraw over the bar at all Victorian gaming venues.

Eftpos cash withdrawals will be limited to $500 within a 24-hour period in new measures announced by the state government last week.

Cashing cheques at gaming venues will also be banned.

Gaming venues are already barred from having ATM but have allowed over-the-bar cash withdrawals of $200 a transaction.

The new cap will be felt in the Greater Dandenong area which has one of the highest rate of electronic gaming machines per adult in the state.

Dandenong gamblers lost a whopping $118 million from July 2016 to June 2017, according to a Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation report released in August.

Those in Casey recorded a $127 million loss.

“This is about protecting people and helping those who choose to gamble stick to their limits,” Gaming Minister Marlene Kairouz said in a statement.

Greater Dandenong residents spent $975 per adult on gaming in 2015-16, 76.2 per cent higher than the state average.

Favourite characters give school a buzz about books Keysborough students celebrated Literacy and Numeracy Week with book-themed events and activities.

Mt Hira College was abuzz with excitement, particularly for the annual book parade.

All students from Foundation to Year 9 started their day with a lap around the college gymnasium, dressed as their favourite character from a book.

Students shared what they loved about their favourite character and members of the student core leadership team presented awards to students whose costumes were inspiring.

Greater Dandenong had two winners at the Victorian Learn Local Awards.

Springvale Neighbourhood House’s Melinda Hamilton took home a Learn Local Acknowledgement Award from the Thursday 31 August awards night.

Training and Skills Minister Gayle Tierney also named Dandenong Neighbourhood House a Learn Local Legend.

Ms Hamilton answered a newspaper advertisement for Springvale Neighbourhood House volunteers about eight years ago.

She takes classes in sewing, craft and English.

The 66-year-old travels to the house from her Seaford home at least three times a week.

“You feel like you’re with friends and you can be yourself and that’s nice,” she said.

Migrant help is all stitched up

By Casey Neill Migrants in Dandenong are stitching up donated fabric to clothe people in need around the world.

Stitches to Style owner Liz Roadley stopped by Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre (SMRC) on Wednesday 30 August to hand over the material.

“I own a fabric store in High Street, Armidale, that sells exclusive fabric,” she said.

“I go to Europe to buy it a couple of times a year. It’s luxury fabric. Some of it’s used by big designers.”

SMRC runs The Learning Space at its Dandenong headquarters from 10am to 2pm on Wednesdays during school terms.

The day includes English, sewing and computer sessions that encourage migrants to socialise and learn new skills.

SMRC chairman Brian Oates said people who came in as members were now instructing others.

“The clothes are going to people in need in other countries,” he said.

Participants swap ideas and share their cul-

tures. “It really is a vibrant little exercise,” he said.

Mr Oates said two or three blokes came along, but mostly women attended.

SMRC offers childcare to free them up to actively participate.

Bruce MP Julian Hill told Ms Roadley about the program when she was looking for a worthy outlet for her space fabrics.

“I’ve got a lot of people who work for me who migrated to Australia, or work closely with us,” she said.

“There are dressmakers from around the world.

“Every new wave of migrants brings a new set of skills, but it always brings some skill in this area.”

This was Ms Roadley’s second donation, but the first time she’d stopped by to see it put to use.

“It absolutely blew my mind,” she said.

“It was all spread out on the table. They got so excited.

“I was pleased I was able to help.

“Just seeing the sparkle in their eyes when they saw the fabric was enough to make me very pleased.”

It’s a treat to watch Latin dance Arriba! Thousands descended to Springvale to show off their dancing skills at the annual Latin Festival on 23-24 September.

Every Latin nationality was represented, with traditional dance performances from Cuban, Peruvian, Brazilian, Mexican and Chilean dance groups hitting the stage.

The Latin Dance Competition was a big drawcard, with many coming from interstate to take part.

Wollongong couple Cristina and Jaime Silva made the trip down from NSW, and were met with huge applause, quickly becoming crowd favourites.

Those wanting a bit of a work out were encouraged to participate in a Zumba class, a gym favourite.

The kids were treated to a tango class while the adults were encouraged to salsa all night long with Latin DJs hitting the decks in the evening.

The Latin Festival is an annual event held in September at the Sandown Racecourse.

It attacks more than 15,000 people and represents more than 20 Latin countries.

Many dance groups from across the world performed.

They’ve got women’s health at art

By Casey Neill Women’s health was in the spotlight at a Dandenong South community forum.

The Community Hubs at the Dandenong South and Springvale Rise primary schools joined on Thursday 14 September to hold a women’s health and wellbeing conference.

The event at Dandenong South included sessions with an art therapist and information on emotional wellbeing, exercise and nutrition.

There was also an animal farm and craft activities for preschool-aged children.

Hub co-ordinator Melanie Mumford said the best part of the day was seeing the participants being so happy.

“And the feedback seemed to be overwhelmingly that it was useful, practical information and that it was a day that was promoting everybody’s sense of wellbeing,” she said.

“We had 57 women sign in.

“We thought that was a pretty excellent attendance.

“It was fantastic to have it as a collaboration between the two schools and certainly something we’re super keen to try again soon.”

Work-related suicide occurs across a multitude of industries.

Research has shown that construction workers are six times more likely to die from suicide than a workplace accident.

The Victoria Police Mental Health Review in 2016 revealed that there is an increased risk of suicide for members of Victoria Police than the general public.

Since 2000, there have been 23 suicides of Victoria Police members. Another report found that people working in protective or emergency services had higher rates of suicide than the general population.

Bullying and exposure to trauma are not the only causes of workplace suicide.

A cultural phenomenon, known as ‘karoshi’ in Japan, is a death resulting from overwork and stress.

In 2015, a 24-year-old worker at a Japanese advertising agency committed suicide after being forced to work extremely long hours.

Unfortunately, the issue of suicide due to overwork is not one that is unique to Japan. Junior doctors have also emerged recently as a cause for concern, with a 2013 survey showing one in 10 doctors reporting thoughts of suicide in the preceding four weeks.

In 2011, Brodie’s Law was introduced after the suicide of a young girl subjected to ongoing bullying by co-workers at her café job in Melbourne.

The law introduced an extension of the stalking provisions and made serious bullying a crime.

“If a worker commits suicide or dies as a result of their workplace injuries, their dependants may have entitlements under the Workplace Injury Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2013,” said Catherine Sim, Associate at Adviceline Injury Lawyers in Springvale.

She said that those entitlements included burial or cremation expenses, counselling for family members, lump sum payments to dependants, up to a total of $598,360 to be shared among all dependants, and pensions to dependant partners or children.

“Dependants may also have the right to sue for lump sum compensation,” added Ms Sim. Lifeline offers specialist services dealing with crisis support and suicide prevention. Twentyfour hour telephone counselling or face-to-face counselling at a number of locations is available.

Journal to uncover city’s past The pages of the Dandenong Journal have chronicled enormous change across the region over the past 157 years.

The settlements of Dandenong, Springvale, Noble Park and Keysborough have grown and changed beyond the recognition of their founders to become thriving suburbs, each with their own unique history and identity.

Next week the Dandenong Journal is publishing a special gloss edition commemorating the region’s history.

Greater Dandenong Then and Now takes a look back at the past and celebrates the vibrant, multi-cultural city of today.

Perhaps no site has changed more in the last 170 years than the corner of Walker and Lonsdale streets in the heart of Dandenong.

Dunbar’s Hotel was the first business to occupy the site in the 1850s.

As one of the few establishments in the fledgling village, the first court sessions and church services were held there, it served as the early post

office and rested teams of Cobb and Co horses in its stables.

By 1877 Mr Dunbar had built another hotel next door and converted the original hotel into a bank and shop.

They were demolished nine years later by new owners to make way for the Royal Hotel, which would serve the township for the next 80 years.

In the 1960s The Royal was demolished to make way for a four-storey office building occupied by AMP. In 2014 the completion of yet another transformation was marked when the City of Greater Dandenong opened its new $65 million municipal building including a state-of-the-art library and public square.

They have managed to retain virtually all of their players and will focus on developing its players within the club and hopefully having a strong season across all grades.

Having star all-rounder Rodni Kumara around for another season means there is a genuine gun for the young players to continue to learn off.

But in terms of the Turf 2 season, there is enough quality within the side to stake a claim to being a genuine premiership fancy.

There is some handy youth at the club but a potentially tough season awaits.

After finishing as runners-up in Turf 3 last season, the Lakers can certainly match it some of the middle-rung sides this season and will be hoping to push their way near or into finals.

It’s likely to cause some short-term pain with the club committed to playing youngsters from the ages of 17 to 22.

The club is also working through the process of electing a coach and captain for the season.

Lyndale is hoping its younger players can help steer it on the right path.

With champion all-rounder Scott Phillips going around again, as well as the inclusion of toporder batsman Ashan Wijayakumara and UAE international Manjula Guruge, the Lions will be there abouts once again.

The pain of losing last year’s Turf 2 grand final must sting for the Pirates but they will use that as the basis of motivation this season as they look to win the premiership.

After finishing down the bottom in 2016/17, Silverton is well and truly eyeing its first finals spot since 2013. Identifying some holes in its playing list, the club has brought in plenty of depth and has raided several clubs for talent.

It has last year’s leading wicket-taker in Kenneth Smart but have added quickie Shrimantha Fernando from Moorabbin to shore up the bowling stocks.

Luke Rhodes from Oakleigh adds some Subbies experience and will also add some quality to the line-up.

With 13 junior teams featuring in the 2017/18 season, there is plenty of talent floating around St Brigid’s/St Louis.

A quality player back home in India, Vab Deshpande will add plenty of quality in what will be a younger looking but more energetic 1st XI. Finals can be achieved if all goes right, but getting more games into their youngsters is also a major focus ahead of the season.

Pup up-and-comer Hasten Slowly shoots ahead Promising pup Hasten Slowly has announced himself on the big stage with a dominant 6 1/2 length win in Thursday night’s Vale Ken Virtue Maiden final.

His win backed up an impressive race track debut in Sunday’s heat as he pounced to the lead early and quickly made the race his own. His time of 29.57 was the fastest of the 12 races on the night.

His trainer Angela Langton was full of praise following ‘Ollie’s’ win.

“I couldn’t ask for more from him, he’s been super in his two starts. His heat run was the first time he’d been over 515 metres.

“He’s trialled fast and has been schooled around here - we knew pretty early on that he’s got a fair bit of ability,” said Langton.

The win meant a lot to Langton given the recent death of Hasten Slowly’s mother, Heidi Go Seek, who was a special part of the kennel.

“Unfortunately she passed away after having a litter of pups. We believe she had a heart attack. It was pretty sad as she was special to us. Hopefully

“If he continues to jump so well we’ll definitely give him a go at the Cup. “We had Weston East in a Cup heat (2014) when he was very young and he ran second to Above All - he was a similar age then to what Hasten Slowly is now.

“It’s always hard stepping up to that class, it separates the very good from the elite.”

WOMEN’S NATIONAL BASKETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 1 A slow starting Dandenong Rangers outfit went down to a Liz Cambage inspired Melbourne Boomers to open the 2017/18 WNBL season on Thursday night.

The 26-year-old Australian Olympian and WNBL legend - who hasn’t been seen in the Australian Domestic scene for five years - was at centre stage in front of a capacity crowd at Dandenong Stadium for the Boomers, the team she won a WNBL MVP for in 2011.

A new look Rangers’ side took to the court, but it was the Boomers who got the early jump courtesy of Cambage who immediately got the away side in front with a faultless jump-shot that set the tone for the entire match.

Despite some impressive work only moments later by Rangers’ star Sara Blicavs, the Boomers were shooting hot, and raced out to a commanding 13-29 quarter time lead after the Rangers fought back later in the term but couldn’t quite reel it back in.

It realistically snuffed out any chance of the Rangers pulling off a remarkable comeback, and despite finding their groove in the second term, could only reduce the margin back to 13-points at half time.

In a tough contest in the second half, the Boomers always found a second gear despite repeat attempts at a comeback by the Rangers, but the first quarter deficit ultimately proved a bridge too far.

Fresh off her playing her first game with the Rangers, import Kayla Pedersen shared her thoughts about the opening round clash “It would have been nice to have a win, but it was alright,” she said post-match.

“They came out really well, and offensively we didn’t really have a flow - I think we really hurt ourselves.”

The Rangers get the perfect chance to bounce back with a grand final rematch against last year’s premiers, Sydney Uni Flames.
