The editor’s desk I had the pleasure of catching up with Leonard Monaghan for our ‘cover story’ this week. Better known as the ‘Warwick Rubbish Rambler’, Leonard is part of that band of unsung local heroes - people who selflessly devote their own time to doing good in our community.

In his case, Leonard is playing no small role in keeping our district free of rubbish along our highways and other major roads, in the same way as another local hero, Graham Buchner, does his bit making us look presentable to visitors and locals alike.

Leonard has collected a staggering amount of rubbish over nearly a decade rambling along our roads - nearly 50 tonnes of it, in fact.

It really does make you wonder about people, doesn’t it? I mean, what is so hard about keeping your rubbish in the car and taking it home or getting rid of it appropriately, instead of winding down the car window and chucking it out?

Apparently that’s too much to ask of many.

A big thanks to Leonard for chatting with us this week - and if you see him out and about along our roads, be sure to give him a toot and wave.

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… THE PARADE IS BACK! The Southern Downs Regional Council is pleased to announce that the Rodeo Street Parade is back in 2017, after being cancelled last year by the council, citing a lack of community support.

The Warwick Rodeo and Gold Cup Campdraft attract crowds in excess of 30,000 people with competitors and horses travelling from every mainland state to compete, even some from overseas.

The council’s manager of economic development and tourism, Scott Templeman, said the parade was an important part of the whole rodeo experience and a chance for individuals, community groups, schools and businesses to celebrate the rodeo while showcasing themselves, their cause or their organisation, all in the name of fun.

“The theme for the parade is Denim and Diamonds, which is also the theme for the Rodeo Queen Quest,” he said.

“The parade will feature the rodeo queens and some professional rodeo competitors.”

It's rodeo month in Warwick.

Portfolio councillor for events, sport and Recreation Yve Stocks said feedback from the community supported the return of the parade.

“I encourage all individuals, groups and organisations to think about how they can participate with creativity, fun and colour,” she said.

“I’m confident that the Warwick community will support and enjoy the parade,” Cr Stocks said.

The date of the parade is Saturday 28 October, commencing at 10am.

Float categories include: •฀Best฀in฀theme;฀ •฀School฀exhibit; •฀Business฀and฀commercial;฀ •฀Club,฀sport฀or฀other฀organisation;฀and •฀Decorated฀bike฀(children).

Some $500 in prize money will be awarded to winners of every category except the decorated bike category, which will receive $100.

Interested organisations should fill in a registration form and return with a $10 cash entry fee to the Warwick Visitor Information Centre by 5pm Friday 20 October.

The route of the parade will be along Palmerin Street from Victoria Street to Fitzroy Street and back.

Anyone considering entering the parade will need to be able to turn at the Fitzroy Street roundabout.

Float entry forms are available at the Warwick Visitor Information Centre or on the council’s website at www.sdrc.qld.gov.au. ●

FLOOD DEBRIS TO STAY

FRESH CHARGE FOR LINDSAY Former Warwick Credit Union director Jim Lindsay - who has been stood aside as chief executive officer of Ipswich City Council - is facing a fresh charge of misconduct after being charged with official corruption in September.

Warwick Credit Union last week confirmed Mr Lindsay had resigned from his role as a board member after the Queensland Crime and Corruption Commission฀(CCC)฀charged฀him฀on฀ Thursday 14 September with official corruption relating to his role as CEO of Ipswich City Council. Mr Lindsay has now also been charged by the CCC over his alleged disclosure of a confidential document. The CCC confirmed last Wednesday 27 September that the second charge had been laid. ●

But฀a฀QRA฀spokesman฀this฀week฀ said the council had received all of its NDRAA funding to fix damage from the floods in December 2010, January 2011 and January 2013.

“Southern Downs Regional Council is responsible for managing its own Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements฀(NDRRA)฀program,฀which฀ includes applying for funding within the Commonwealth’s deadlines,” the spokesman said.

“Under the Commonwealth’s NDRRA guidelines, councils have two years after the end of the financial year in which the relevant disaster took place to complete restoration works.

“For example, for an event in January 2013, the allowable time limit to complete works was 30 June 2015.

“Southern Downs Regional Council received extensions of time for a number of submissions related its 2011 program, as did a significant amount of councils across Queensland in relation to the 2011 events.

“The QRA applies robust assessment processes to applications for NDRRA funding and assesses for eligibility and value for money.

“All Southern Downs NDRRA applications for funding were received for 2010-'11 to 2012-'13 events have been reviewed in line with the terms and conditions of the Commonwealth’s NDRRA Determination.

“All eligible NDRRA amounts have been reimbursed to council.” ●

The Twin Hills silver mine at Texas has moved a step closer to re-starting operations, with MRV Metals having secured a mining lease over the site.

MRV Metals is a wholly-owned subsidiary of stock exchange-listed company Moreton Resources.

A company statement released last Tuesday 3 October, says it plans to develop “a mining precinct that will look to advance silver, copper, zinc and gold metals".

“The operations are scheduled to be fully operational by January 2018 and seek from that stage, immediate positive cash flow,” the statement said.

The mine is located six kilometres from Texas and was previously operated

by Alcyone Resources, which went into receivership in 2014. ●

Flood debris still in place from local rainfall associated with Cyclone Debbie earlier this year won’t be removed until the Southern Downs Regional Council gets approval for federal and state disaster relief funding.

A local resident recently drew the attention of the Free Times to debris stuck under the bridge on Victoria Street in Warwick, near Allman Park racecourse.

Other locals also remain concerned about outstanding damage to roads, in particular rural roads, from the heavy rainfall back in late March and early rainfall produced by Cyclone Debbie.

The council’s engineering services director Peter See told the Free Times the flood debris under the Victoria Street฀Bridge฀“has฀been฀captured฀as฀ part of the damage inflicted by exTropical Cyclone Debbie”.

“As with other flood damage caused by this weather event, removal of the debris will be covered by disaster relief funding, rather than from council’s funds,” Mr See said.

“Council is still awaiting approval from the National Disaster Relief and Recovery฀Arrangements฀(NDRRA)฀for฀ packages that have been submitted.

“Council understands that the approvals will be made soon.”

RUBBISH RAMBLER’S ENDLESS LIST T

he list of items Leonard Monaghan has collected on roadsides across the Warwick area in nearly a decade is almost endless - but he says the most important thing he’s picked up is “a sense of purpose”.

Known on Facebook as the ‘Warwick Rubbish Rambler’, Leonard is on a one-man quest to clean up roadside and other public litter from around our fair city and its surrounds.

He’s a familiar sight to truckies and other regular highway and road users as he pushes his ‘Wheel Thing’ - a self-constructed waste removal and transport facility - on an almost daily basis across the district.

The ‘Wheel Thing’ is actually a series of such selfpropelled vehicles, which Leonard assembles both from donated and discovered stroller, bike and other parts.

But even more impressive are the statistics from his rubbish rambles, which involve an average of around 10 kilometres a day, most days of the week. Since 2008 Leonard says he’s collected more than 46 tonnes of rubbish - and he’s

“But if anything, the problem seems to be getting worse.

“I think people are generally becoming more careless with what they throw out of the car window.”

Leonard says tyres are “a big problem”, with people avoiding the fee charged for tyre disposal at council waste facilities.

“Tyres are particularly bad along the Killarney Road Dead Horse Lane is a major spot as it’s near the dump,” he said.

“When I come across large amounts of tyres I report it to the council.

“Plastic and glass bottles are by far the most common item - if there’s been a grass fire on the side of the road you find a lot more.”

Leonard declined to comment in detail on some of the more bizarre items he’s stumbled across - let’s just say they’ve been of an ‘adult’ variety, begging the question as to how they found their way out of a car window in the first place.

Clothes are a common find - and they’re often in surprisingly good condition.

not talking out of his hat either, he weighs the results of his collecting daily.

And at the time of the Free Times going to print this week, his total for 2017 alone had just tipped over the 5000 kilo mark - on Monday alone the haul weighed in at 38.4 kilos, after enduring the cool change over the weekend and a bit of rain.

The Free Times caught up with Leonard last week while he was cleaning up the stretch of the Cunningham Highway west of Warwick, between Lyndhurst Lane and Sandy Creek Road.

It happened to be his biggest week of all - a staggering 250 kilos in total - capping of his biggest-ever month with 810 kilos of rubbish removed from our roadsides.

“I started walking back in 2008 for exercise,” Leonard explained.

“I became very surprised and annoyed at the amount of rubbish I came across while out walking and that’s what led to me doing what I do.

“I had the idea I could single-handedly clean up the whole area and really I’ve been expecting rubbish to decline.

Leonard just capped off his biggest month in nine years in September - a total of 810 kilos of rubbish collected.

Leonard continues to be surprised at what he finds on the side of the highway like a filing cabinet.

Leonard keeps himself well-hydrated out on the road.

“I suppose they just blow off the back of utes or whatever it might be,” he said.

“All of my gloves I’ve found while out collecting - I’ve got about a dozen pairs at home at the moment.”

Leonard carries a plentiful supply of water on the ‘Wheel Thing’, and his choice of footwear is obviously critical, opting for comfortable sneakers rather than work or safety boots.

“I have a preferred brand that I get from Big W - a lot of shoes give me blisters but these are just particularly comfortable and don’t give me any problems,” he said.

“I go through about six pairs a year.”

As well as tyres, Leonard also reports other discoveries while out on the road - such as potholes and other safety hazards - to the relevant authorities, such as the council or Transport and Main Roads.

He says he’s had no near misses while working on the side of the highway, and often gets a friendly toot on the air horn from truckies who have come to recognise him, “and people sometimes pull up and give me rubbish”.

Dead animals are something of an occupational hazard, but can also be of interest - like the body of an endangered

quoll he came across in the Bracker Road area a few years back.

WHERE DOES ALL THE RUBBISH GO? Leonard has a sizeable sorting facility at his Warwick home and separates recyclables and non-recyclables out on the road, transferring them to a large number of bins in the backyard.

“I generally fill up the station wagon about once a fortnight and take a load to the dump,” he said.

“Some of the recyclables end up in the dump shop - I’m happy for that to happen.

“I’ve been dropping off cans I pick up to Warwick East State School for the last few years.”

When asked what’s the best thing he’s discovered in his years of roadside rambling, Leonard is quickly to the point.

“A sense of purpose,” he says, with a quiet smile.

WHERE IS THE LOVE? In response to Pastor Brendon Dunn’s comments about gay marriage in last week’s Free Times, I simply want to say that as someone who was raised as a Baptist, I find it also a sad reflection on the state of our nation when Christians like Brendon show lack of love for the people in our community who find themselves to be gay and desire to have a family life like the rest of us. There are numerous such people all around our area who anyone with an open mind will personally know. We probably all have them in our families. I do, and so too do several of the families my children have married into. They are normal, decent people who through no fault of their own, are made to feel unwelcome by people like Brendon.

These people and their families are not, as Brendon claims, intolerant thugs or activists pushing a radical rainbow agenda. Nor do we want to oppose those with Christian beliefs.

We simply want us all to be equal in our society and in legal matters. We welcome any arguments about whether marriage is the appropriate legal structure for gay couples, but please join us in truly accepting them as people.

JUST VOTE NO By now, the majority of your readers will have received their government-sponsored form on which to express their wishes on the alteration of the law, to recognise the homosexual unions as marriage. I entreat them to return their forms without fail, and VOTE NO. This vote is neither compulsory, nor binding. However, our openly partisan Prime Min-

ister has declared that, if the “yes” vote is greater than the “no” vote, even if the total return is only from a small percentage of the population, he will introduce a “Bill” to allow a “conscience” vote in Parliament, by the members of the combined houses of parliament. It is vitally important to return your ‘no’ vote.

We do not elect our members of parliament to vote on any matter according to their consciences. We elect them to do the will of the people. We express our wishes, either by voting for their policies they have enumerated prior to election, or by our vote at a legally constituted referendum. The direction our society would take if it were guided only by the conscience vote of politicians does not bear contemplation.

I encourage all who read this, to never accept political solutions to any problem, where that solution is not approved by a legal majority vote. Please return your plebiscite papers, and VOTE NO. Mick Zerk, Allora.

SALEYARDS PARALLEL I would like to draw the attention of ratepayers and users of the municipal saleyards and hopefully our councillors to recent events involving the Ipswich City Council. That council recently decided to reclaim land it had leased to the Willowbank Motor Racing Group believing it had that power to reclaim.

The litigation that followed gave the said council no hope of regaining the land until the motor racing group had no further use of the land. This is exactly what I have been trying to point out in my previous letters. Private management options will control and dictate fees regardless of what council proposed in its

lease arrangements. The council might just as well have sold the saleyards; they will have no control over the private management.

This should be seen for what it is, a shortsighted grab for money by a council in desperate need of money. Referring to their statement (that they wish to improve efficiency and ensure competitive prices to producers and sellers) we already have an open auction system that attracts buyers from regions outside the Warwick area. Competitive pricing will always be dictated by supply and demand; it always has been and will always be so. The SDRC must continue to effectively manage the saleyards as it has done in the past. It has an obligation and a responsibility to continue to do so. Ratepayers and producers alike have shown that this is their wish at recent meetings at Freestone (over 600 people) and Stanthorpe (over 200 people) within a matter of weeks of one another.

In my 85 years I have seen two flour mills, three co-op milk and butter factories, one railway workshop and six sawmills and other small businesses close down in the Warwick area. All have taken much-needed revenue and work from this area, all in the name of efficiency.

Perhaps we should have private management instead of the SDRC for more efficient councilling!

THE FEATHERS FLY My, my, there sure is a lot of fussing going on.

It now appears that all of our parliamentary roosters are coming home to roost; and there are quite a few “Chicken Littles" among them.

It seems that on a daily basis we hear, or read of another imminent threat to the fabric of our

fragile society, but lo, not much is mentioned of the rot at the core of it all.

I conducted a little research into what our federal parliamentary system actually costs the Australian taxpayers. In 2015-'16, it was estimated that that figure was roughly around $500 million; which equates to approximately $2.2 million per seat, per year. And here we find our collected taxes footing a bill for in excess of $120 million for an unnecessary, glorified opinion poll which will produce no legally binding result.

Most of us live with a misapprehension that we elect our fellow citizens into a democratically, designed construct for representation on matters such as this debate. We try to hold these privileged individuals to account every three years or so - and of course longer for the senate; if we don’t like the way they play in the big house, we throw the bastards out.

This change to the Marriage Act should have been sorted out a long time ago, as we expect most issues such as this are conducted in this bicameral system of democracy. How many of us think we are getting value for money from our pollies? I, for one, will exercise my right in returning the precious survey unticked and unopened. I feel strongly that they should not be encouraged, and if we let them get away with this one, we will open the floodgates to allow these miscreants a free hand into the wilful abuse of our limited, back pockets.

BILLBOARD BACKLASH IS A SIGN OF THE TIMES

Double standard? A Queensland Rail train advertising the ’Brisbane Pride’ event last month. operating, given the same billboard had displayed a Bible verse from the church for the last two and a half years “without any issues”.

“Queensland Rail, on whose land the billboard stands, has allegedly received complaints about the (current) sign, and cites their policy of not permitting political or religious advertising on their property,” he said.

Billboard company Bishopp is understood to have sent a work crew from Brisbane to remove the sign earlier this week.

Queensland Rail chief executive officer Nick Easy told the Free Times the content of the pro-biblical marriage sign was “outside of our advertising policy”.

But Mr Easy’s statement seems to conflict with recent advertising on QR trains in Brisbane promoting the ‘Brisbane Pride’ festival in September.

Brendon Dunn said he had been sent photos of the ads by a QR employee who saw the Free Times story on the Stanthorpe billboard last week and said they were “disgusted at QR’s double standards”.

“He also said that if he dared to complain about it, he would probably lose his job,” Brendon said. ●

A New England Highway billboard sign promoting traditional marriage installed by a Stanthorpe church has been removed by landowner Queensland Rail.

As reported last week Granite Belt Baptist Church pastor Brendon Dunn was furious at a QR demand that the billboard message, on the highway south of Stanthorpe on QR land, be removed following complaints from the public.

Brendon told the Free Times QR had on Monday 18 September ordered the billboard message “supporting biblical marriage” be taken down after receiving “pressure from gay marriage activists”.

The billboard sign reads - “Jesus Christ said: God made them male and female - Mark 10:6", and has a graphic of two wedding bands.

UP TO THE CHALLENGE

BY NATASHA SHEAHAN I have struggled with my weight my entire teenage and adult life. At my heaviest I was over 140kg, and it never seemed to bother me.

I had to get off rides at Dreamworld and walk off in front of lots of people because the harness wouldn’t do up, it didn’t seem to bother me.

Being limited to where I could shop for clothes because of which stores stocked my large size, again it didn’t seem to bother me.

The truth is these things did really bother me, I just didn’t realise it until the birth of my son.

I had tried fad diets, shake diets and short stints at the gym. I was setting myself up for failure every time because I was looking for a quick fix, not a complete lifestyle change.

As my son got a little bit older (he will soon be three years old), I realised I wanted to be around for him, I wanted to see him grow into a smart, successful young man, and if I stayed on the path I was on, I was bound to not see this happen.

A bit over 12 months ago, I decided enough was enough. I needed to change my life not only for myself, but for my family.

I jumped on Google and looked up weight loss surgery. After extensive research, I decided a sleeve gastrectomy was the option for me. I could not afford to pay for this surgery outright, so I got private health insurance and in 12 months I would

be taking the first steps to change my life forever.

On 8 August 2017, my very supportive husband drove me to Brisbane. That day I had the procedure and began my weight loss journey. The gastric sleeve surgery is only a tool, it is up to me to make it work for me.

I needed to start an exercise routine to encourage my weight loss and get me to the place I need to be health-wise.

While down at WIRAC discussing advertising, the director David suggested I put my name down for the Warwick Credit Union 10 Week Challenge.

I needed to exercise, I needed to get into a routine...what did I have to lose? (apart from weight!)

I went home and discussed it with my family, and that day put my name down for the challenge.

Last week, I had the induction for the challenge. I met some wonderful staff at WIRAC - Amy, Carla and Alex - who I will be leaning on heavily for support throughout this journey.

And that brings me to today. I am three days into the challenge and going strong!

Since my surgery, I have lost 23.5kg and I couldn’t be prouder of myself for making the decisions that I have.

NEWS FEDERAL POLICE ART EXPO The Warwick Art Gallery has announced the opening of the ‘Centenary of Federal Policing Art Exhibition’ on Thursday 19 October.

The exhibition marks 100 years since Australia’s first Federal Police Force was formed, known then as Australian Commonwealth Police.

The federal police force was formed following the famous ‘Warwick incident’, in which Prime Minister William ‘Billy’ Morris Hughes was addressing a crowd at the Warwick railway station and had an egg thrown at him.

Prime Minister Hughes ordered the arrest of the egg-thrower, but

the state police allegedly refused to carry out his order. Eight days later the first commissioner for Australian Commonwealth Police was appointed.

Celebrations marking the infamous egg-throwing incident are scheduled for Saturday 18 November this year.

Warwick Art Gallery director Karina Devine said that the exhibition would include key photos and artefacts from federal policing over 100 years.

Portfolio Councillor for Regional Promotion, Tourism and the Arts, Rod Kelly, said the exhibition was a major coup of the region.

“The birthplace of Australian federal policing was right here in Warwick, and

I’m looking forward to the exhibition showcasing how federal policing has evolved over the last 100 years,” Cr Kelly said. ●

ALPACAS SHOOTING PROBED Wallangarra police are continuing to investigate what is believed to be the point-blank shooting of a group of alpacas on a Lyra property south of Stanthorpe on the night of Sunday 24 September.

Police say seven dead alpacas were located on a property on Curtin Road, with six of them found in a nearby creek and one near the residence on the property.

The animals in the creek had

to be removed by a tractor to avoid contamination of the watercourse.

The owners of the property were away at the time. Other animals on the property were unharmed.

No arrests have yet been made, and anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the Wallangarra police on 4684 3120. ●

FAIRER GUN LAWS PLEDGE A future LNP government will renew all existing category H gun licences for law-abiding Southern Downs primary producers, says LNP candidate for Southern Downs James Lister.

Mr Lister said the LNP would also ensure that all new applicants for category H licences were assessed fairly and in a timely manner.

“The LNP will give farmers a fair go and not treat them like criminals,” he said.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk and Labor have treated law-abiding farmers worse than criminal gang members.

“This is part of our ‘New Deal’ to build a better future for regional Queensland, because we understand the challenges in our local community.”

Mr Lister said under the LNP’s Fairer Gun Laws policy, primary producers who currently hold a Category H licence (hand gun) would have their licence renewed provided they met the “fit and proper person test”, as per the current law. ●

•฀ On Thursday 28 September about 8pm police from Stanthorpe station were called to attend the Hotel Stanthorpe in relation to a 29-yearold male from Killarney who was causing a disturbance and refusing to leave. The male was arrested and transported to the Stanthorpe watchouse where he was charged with behaving in a disorderly manner on a licensed premises, refusing to leave and obstructing police. He will appear in the Stanthorpe Magistrates' court on the Wednesday 18 October. ● •฀ On Monday 2 October, police were called to attend an address in Leslie Parade in relation to a break and enter. Police believe an unknown person or persons have broken into the dwelling and stolen a number of items on that date. Police are asking anyone who saw any suspicious person around the area at the time to phone the station on 4681 6400.

•฀ Also on Monday police from the Stanthorpe Road Policing unit intercepted a vehicle on the New England Highway about 2.30pm.

Police will allege that as a result a 26-year-old female from Nerang tested positive to driving with an illicit drug in her system and was issued with a notice to appear in the Stanthorpe Magistrates' Court on Wednesday 18 October.

•฀ Between the Friday 29 September and Saturday 30 September a number of instances of Colorbond fencing being damaged have been reported to police. It appears that fencing and panels on Lock Street and Folkestone Street were damaged by persons either kicking or hitting the panels. A shed at the sports oval was also damaged around this time by persons kicking the panels. TOURIST BRINGS FRESH EYES TO TOWN

BY JEREMY SOLLARS Tourism continues to be a hot topic of discussion across the Southern Downs and Granite Belt - and one of our major economic drivers.

A recent first-time visitor to Warwick kindly agreed to make some friendly but honest observations on a number of local attractions around the Rose City, as seen on a typical week-day by a pair of “fresh eyes” ...

First stop - Visitor Information Centre, Warwick Town Hall Comments I didn’t see the information centre sign on the footpath outside the Town Hall, but maybe it was just the angle I was looking at it and walking. I did notice the sign for the craft shop - it really stuck out.

I went in and started looking at the brochures and a gentleman approached me and asked what I was interested in looking at around Warwick and gave me some information on what to see on a Tuesday and Wednesday, and advice on accommodation options.

He and the other volunteers were very friendly and helpful but the booth itself was so tiny - it was quite claustrophobic. And there was nothing really in the way of souvenirs to purchase - but you could get a voucher for a half-priced pie at one of the local bakeries. Maybe a bit more signage directing people (to the info centre) could be helpful.

Rating - 7/10 Rodeo Heritage Centre, Alice Street Comments For someone who’s never been to a rodeo it was very interesting and informative, particularly the displays and information about competitors down through the years, especially the young kids who I didn’t think would have been in a rodeo. There was a good set-up of what a rodeo looks like and I was impressed with all the history on display, such as ropes and other equipment used in rodeo. I was surprised at how long a history rodeo has.

Again there could have been more souvenirs available, such as a larger variety and sizes of T-shirts,

for example. But overall it was very interesting and the staff again were very friendly and helpful. I was happy to pay the $10 entry fee.

Rating - 8/10 Jubilee Rose Garden, Alice Street (opposite Rodeo Heritage Centre, in Queens Park) This was a bit of a disappointment, as it was promoted on the information from the Town Hall. I love roses and I was expecting something fairly impressive - and it wasn’t. Obviously it’s been winter and dry but this was a bit of a downer.

Rating - 3/10 Glen Road Lookout/viewing platform This wasn’t listed on the Visitor Centre info, but is listed in the 2015 ‘Explore Australia’ guidebook. I drove up and down Glen Road looking for it but I couldn’t find it, so I took some photos of the view over Warwick from up near the radio station (Rainbow FM on Willi Street). It would be great if there was somewhere in Warwick where you could look at and take photos of the vista over the town, some kind of proper lookout.

Note - the Glen Road lookout tower was dismantled several years ago by the council on safety grounds.

Rating - N/A Warwick Art Gallery I went in and was going to give a donation, but the lady at the counter said, “I think you should see it first”, and told me they were renovating.

Obviously there was work going on and some of the areas were roped off, and the little cafe was closed.

There was a display of tea cosies and that was it, I was in and out in five minutes. I assume they were between exhibitions and there seemed to be building work of some kind going on, so hard to rate this one.

Rating - N/A Pig and Calf Sale, Lyons Street I found this very interesting, even though I couldn’t understand a word of what the auctioneer was saying! It was interesting to watch how the pigs and the other animals were sold - the little pigs were very cute - and to browse through the bric-a-brac. And there were food vans available. I had

a chinwag with one of the locals who told me a bit of the history of the pub over the road (O’Mahony’s Hotel). It could probably do with more toilets, as there seemed to be a long queue for the only toilet I could see. But overall very interesting and definitely worth a visit.

Rating - 8/10 VSASA Military Museum, Tooth Street This was advertised in the Visitor Centre literature as being open on a Wednesday from 9am to 1pm, but when I got there at around midday it was closed. This was disappointing as I have a lot of family members with a military background and I’d have really liked to have had a look through. But I understand it’s run by volunteers which probably makes it difficult.

Rating - N/A Pringle Cottage museum complex, Dragon Street This was supposed to be closed on a Wednesday but I decided to drive past and have a look anyway. When I got there a tour group had just left, and the volunteer who was there was kind enough to let me go through, and walked with me explaining the displays which was very nice of him.

I was fascinated by many of the items on display, which reminded me of my grandmother’s era and house, and just some very interesting exhibits in general, including the farming equipment and machinery, which the volunteer explained how they worked back in the old days. The fashion exhibit was so interesting, and I liked the overall ‘set-up’ of the complex.

Rating - 9/10 Glengallan Homestead, New England Highway Not sure about the $10 entry fee on a weekday as it’s a self-guided tour.

But it is certainly impressive to see how it’s been renovated, especially things like the staircase, and all of the items that were retrieved and are now on display. I loved the view off the top verandah. You do get an idea of what life was like back in those times.

Again, more souvenirs for travellers could be looked at.

October is really garden month in Warwick.

Tomorrow the garden competition entries close, and will be picked up and collated, with a plan of attack formulated for the judge who will commence his duties on Monday morning.

Then St Mark’s Women’s Guild 55th Annual Rose Show will be held on Friday 13 October.

The following week, Wednesday and Thursday 18 and 19 October, the Warwick Horticultural Society will hold the Annual Spring Flower Show in St Mary’s Hall in Wood Street. Last year, this was the largest flower show in Queensland, and we are hoping for good entries this year despite the atrocious gardening weather we have been experiencing.

The society is 109 years old this year, and with few exceptions have held a Spring Flower Show and Garden Competition annually.

The Garden Competition winners will be announced on the Thursday afternoon of the flower show and prizes and trophies given for both competitions.

Annette Russell will have her magnificent garden in Killarney open to the public for all of October. If you like roses, put a visit on your list of “to do” things. The roses are all named and the perfume is wonderful! I admire roses, but am not a rose grower. I love their perfume

· Time to start and think about planting all those lovely melons, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and beans ready for summer salads. · Zucchinis are such fun to grow in all their different colours, but are such prolific producers you really must limit the number or you will find yourself with enough to feed the whole district! · At Nambour at the Garden Expo, I was fortunate to pick up some old fashioned Klondike Special Watermelon seeds. These are the huge long oval melons, pale green with dark stripes that I remember from my childhood. I am reliably informed that Warpaint is also an excellent variety of watermelon to grow, producing large round striped melons. · I also found some of my favourite Hales Best rock melon seeds at Nambour that I am looking forward to planting. Dixie Jumbo is another lovely rock melon. Both have excellent taste and are not hard like the ones bred for transport and sale in supermarkets today. ●

Lastly for the Rodeo Weekend, there is the Floral Competitions to be judged on Friday 27 October on design, creativity and condition of materials. So come up with a theme, enter and advertise you club, business or school to all the visitors that will be in town for the rodeo and campdraft.

The roses in the main street and town parks are pruned and fertilised annually by the staff so that they will be in full flower for this event. I am away as I am writing this and so have no idea how the Palmerin Street roses are looking, but know that the parks and gardens people will have done their best to have a great show for Rodeo Week.

At the moment, lavender is blooming

everywhere. What a hardy and useful plant this is. There are a good many varieties and a really wide range of flower types and colours. It is a fragrant shrub from the Mediterranean area and has a long history of use as a sleep aid, an antiseptic and a tonic. Egyptians used it for embalming, ancient Greeks used the oil for medicine, Roman soldiers carried it as a wound dressing and to stop infection while monks and nuns in the middle ages in England grew it. It is still used for the majority of these uses today and also increasingly as a culinary herb.

The Royal Connection with Queen Victoria caused a peak in its popularity as a perfume during her reign as it was a favourite with her.

There are three varieties, English, French and Italian/Spanish. We are seeing a lot of the Italian varieties in a wide range of colours at the moment. They are easily recognised by the two brightly coloured wings on the top of each flower. The French Lavender has serrated leaves and the English lavender is considered the true lavender by many gardeners. Its strongly perfumed flowers bloom on square stems above aromatic grey-green foliage from winter through spring. This is the one flowering in my garden at present. ●

Vincenzo’s At the Big Apple celebrated their new image with a launch for families on Saturday 23 September, with a kids’ pet competition, an apple bobbing race and carved apple heads.

Adults were entertained for the evening with Italian culinary delights served by chefs Carmello and Leena.

IF you are considering selling your property, a question that may come up is what level of equity you have in your home.

It is important that you fully investigate your equity position before you make any decisions about selling or buying another property. There are some common traps associated with using equity in your home, and it’s important you do the sums early, so you understand your position.

Equity is the difference between the value of the property and the owner’s unencumbered interest in the property.

In other words, it’s what would be left over if you sold the property today and paid off all the associated debts with the home (ie the mortgage).

People often use part of the equity in their homes to fund activities such as renovations.

But what happens when the value of the property falls and the potential sale doesn’t clear the associated debts?

It is well documented that regional Queensland property markets are doing it tough and some isolated areas of the southeast corner are not exactly thriving.

Unfortunately, there may be some owners who bought property in the past five to 10 years and are now paying off a property that has a lower value today than it did when they bought it.

When a property owner is considering selling the property and they have negative equity, it’s more than likely they will need to obtain the bank’s approval

SWAG OF STORM SILVERWARE The NRL and AFL seasons are done and dusted for 2017. What magnificent finals.

Plenty of champions on display. The Storm are littered with superstars, but the star of Richmond’s Brownlow medallist and Norm Smith medallist Dusty Martin has been shot into another orbit after last weekend. Billy Slater showed us just a touch of how hard he has worked to get back to his superstar best when his emotion spilled over after winning the Clive Churchill medal.

Thoroughly enjoyed both games - you could not have asked for more.

If you are a Storm supporter, it is almost impossible to find fault with their nearperfect season.

The Melbourne trophy cabinet will be overflowing with the Premiership, the minor premiership Clive Churchill Medal (Billy Slater) Dally M Medal (Cam Smith) and Dally M Fullback of the Year and Coach of the Year. Suliasi Vunivalu and Josh AddoCarr set try-scoring records and Cameron Smith enhanced his reputation reaching a plethora of milestones throughout the year.

Melbourne won 23 games. Lost only four.

Finished with a home record of 11/2 and an away record of 12/2. They won 10 on the trot including the grand final and their longest losing streak was one game. They used only 25 players all season, scored 125 tries and conceded only 61 tries.

Looking at those stats, it’s amazing they didn’t win the grand final by the length of the straight. Are they the “best ever“ club team. Hard to say, but they will go down in history as one of the best.

Where to from here? They lose superstar Cooper Cronk along with Jordan McLean, Tohu Harris and Slade Griffin. Brodie Croft and Riley Jacks. It’s a big void but no-one will handle the transition better than Melbourne and Craig Bellamy. Can they go back to back - only a fool would write them off.

12 OUT OF 10 FOR AN UNBELIEVABLE 2017.

Cowboys - Bravest and gutsiest side ever.

The battle-weary Cowboys soldiered on as the hysteria and belief spread over throughout NQ of the country. They proved they can mix it with the big guns without their biggest.

The Cowboys lost no supporters after the GF, and despite the obvious disappointment, they can hold their heads as high as any team in the NRL. Retention is the name of the game going forward, and most of their top names have been resigned. Te Maire Martin and Jordan McLean join the 2018 roster while Ray Thompson a local junior who has played over 100 NRL games for his beloved Cowboys retires.

2018 expect to see them there when the whips are cracking as they welcome back JT and Matt Scott.

9.5/10 - They showed the rest of the competition what it means to have heart.

Roosters - disappointing - In patches they were arguably the most destructive side in the NRL Telstra Premiership. However, rarely - maybe once or twice - were they able to put it all together for 80 minutes, with players guilty of clocking off for extended periods.

The Roosters lose Aidan Guerra and Connor Watson heading to the Knights, but welcome attacking weapon James Tedesco.

A third preliminary final loss in four years will hurt, but if they can cut out the schoolboy errors then premiership glory could be theirs in 2018. 7.5/10 harsh but they promised much but didn’t deliver when it counted.

Winners of the inaugural Churches of Christ Fast Fours tournament Tenterfield visiting team Rob Alcock, Nev Richardson, Greg Ambrose and Judy Richardson check out their winning spoils.

Broncos - The 11-year premiership drought continues. The team that ended their season will go down as one of the most dominant NRL sides in history. Cold comfort for fans, but the team probably performed above expectations.

Many ’experts’ wrote the Broncos off at the start of the season. In the end, the injury curse cruelled their premiership dreams. Here is life at the Broncos without Corey Parker and a lot of that is to do with McGuire’s stellar transition to lock. A new look Broncos awaits in 2018 - Ben Hunt, Tautau Moga, Benji Marshall, Jai Arrow, Herman Ese’ese and Adam Blair exit. Jack Bird joins the team. Question marks remain around the halves pairing of Anthony Milford and Kodi Nikorima. Only time will tell. A fully fit Darius Boyd and hooker Andrew McCullough should see at least another top-four finish. 7.5/10 EELS Out of the finals in straight-sets. When the disappointment fades, the Eels players should look back with pride on what was achieved this season.

Players were galvanised by the trauma of 2016. All pulling in the same direction and united by a desperation to play for a coach in Brad Arthur. They finished fourth (their first top-four finish in 12 seasons), won twice as many games as they lost, unearthed a couple of future stars and brought hope back for long-suffering fans. 8/10 - Lookout in 2018.

SHARKS There’s a reason why no side has gone back-to-back since the Broncos in 199293 and - the hunter becomes the hunted.

The Sharks found out what it’s like to have teams hunting them every week. Patches of brilliance were offset by silly penalties and costly errors, and they paid a heavy price.

Their roster is ageing, but they have some rising stars including Valentine Holmes.

They lose Jack Bird but gain Josh Dugan.

Does James Maloney stay or go. 7/10 SEA EAGLES Was 2017 a success, or a failure? Probably, somewhere in between. They finished with the third-most tries of any club after 26 rounds, but ran out of puff at the end of the season. Tom Trbojevic had a breakout season, while Cherry-Evans and Blake Green developed a great combination. Very little player movement reported. Expect a better finish in 2018. 7/10 PANTHERS Expectations were high after 2016, and the Panthers were early favourites to win the GF. The Panthers had one of the best second half records all season, but the game is 80 minutes. They struggled to beat top four sides and missed too many close games.

Tyrone May’s ACL injury will affect the Panthers season get go, but on the flip side they have one of the best rising stars in Nathan Cleary. Probably underachieved in 2017, but another year of development under their belt. 6.5/10. Better days ahead for the Penny Panthers.

DRAGONS Bitterly disappointing end to the season gave the Cowboys a leg up. Gareth Widdop inspirational for them. Welcome Ben Hunt and James Graham. They have gone from a team making up the numbers to one that can now set a top-eight finish as a minimum. They’ve learned the hard way not to take weaker teams lightly. Should be better for it in 2018. 6/5 /010. One to watch next season.

RAIDERS Have a lot of the qualities seen in successful footy teams but they fell agonisingly short time and again. Jack Wighton and Josh Hodgson led the way and Ricky Stuart has not many changes in a reasonably settled squad.

Fans will be expecting with a little tweaking the Green Machine will roar into action as they expected again this year. A touch disappointing 5.5/10 BULLDOGS Put a line through 2017 - pretend it never happened and start afresh. New coach, new signings hopefully a return to the Dogs of old - Huge loss captain James Graham.

Cowboys owe them big time. A very generous 3.5 /10.

RABBITOHS Another powerful attacking force one week, below par the next. Parted ways with head coach Michael Maguire just days after their campaign ended. Welcome Dane Gagai into the burrow and welcome back Greg Inglis.

Another to put a line through for season 2017.

4/10 Great expectations in 2018.

WARRIORS The record remains on replay at Mount Smart Stadium. Missed the playoffs for the fifth time in six years despite their roster.

The most frustrating team in the NRL. 2017 one of their worst seasons. Looks to be no joy in the pipeline for fans.

Disappointing - 3/10.

TIGERS A rollercoaster year that promised much and delivered not much more than turmoil.

Tedesco and Woods will peddle their wares elsewhere in 2018. Rejuvenated Benji Marshall returns to his spiritual home. and will be joined by Josh Reynolds, Russell Packer and Ben Matulino.

3 /10 Plenty of hope for Tigers fans under new coach Ivan Cleary.

TITANS If you are looking for drama, look no further - 2017 - simply a disaster - sacked the coach and kept the player - Wrong according to most. Still hunting for a new coach and also a new owner. Need to bring the playing factions together and bring out the best in their star signing. Good luck whoever gets that job 2/10.

KNIGHTS Finished with the wooden spoon, but showed more fortitude than many who finished further up the ladder.

Coach Nathan Brown and playmaker Brock Lamb have silenced their critics and there is excitement about the prospects of Daniel and Jacob Saifiti, Mitch Barnett and potential Ponga are excellent signings.

Gagai’s loss is a blow, but this is a club on the up. Look for them in the eight in 2018.

5/10 A club with $$ in their salary cap - If Cooper Cronk plays on, could Joey woo him to the Knights - stranger things have happened.

RAIN NO PAIN I am sure everyone has been praying for rain in the district, and when it finally arrived on Sunday it was not going to stop the diehards at the Inglewood Sporting Shooters range.

Winning the first round of clays was Tom Donald with Ross Jackson and Adam Channells taking third place.

The Clays were followed by a Rimfire contest held off the bench. In an upset first time shooter and junior, David Channells showed his more experienced and older opponents just how it should be done. Filling the minor lacings were Ray Dudgeon Stephanie Dudgeon. This Sunday the club has scheduled a Single Action, Rimfire Benchrest. Those who wish to participate in the upcoming Muzzle Loading Championships are encouraged to go out to the range and have a practice.

The first game was a particularly tactical affair with each move given careful consideration and often a great deal of discussion. After the 13 hoops of the first game, all players were ready for a wellearned break. The winning team was Justin Liddy, Sharyn Roser and Bev Sullivan returning a score of 13 to their opponents Shirley Page, Marian Castles and Elaine Brown’s 9.

The second game was cut short due to time constraints. It was Bev Sullivan, Elaine Brown and Shirley Roser who led 7-5 when the players called it quits. Best on the court was Justin Liddy who showed good form in both games. He scored six in the opening game and had the best two game combined score of nine. Players are hoping to see those in the casualty ward back on deck next week.

The Ballandean Football Club has decided running a Summer 6’s competition for Under 12-15 and Open Men and Women to fill the void as the YMCA is unable to justify the rising cost of running events at the International club.

It is planned that games will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

FAST FOURS The Stanthorpe Bowls Club hosted the inaugural Churches of Christ Classic on Friday with many visiting bowlers joining the locals on perfectly prepared greens.

Teams played a new format - Fast Fours that is sure to become popular and was rolled out for the first time in Stanthorpe.

Fast Fours is a modified form of the game where teams of four play only four ends with each player playing only one ball per end. A minimum of four teams play in a pool with a minimum of eight pools in the tournament.

Points are accumulated throughout the rounds using the standard scoring system.

The two teams with the highest scores at the end of the pool rounds to determine the winning team. The tournament style game is perfect for tournaments like this as it allows teams to engage with a variety of opponents and adds a real fun element to the game.

In the final round on Friday it was Stanthorpe and Tenterfield going head to head. The visiting team of Rob Alcock, Nev Richardson, Greg Ambrose and Judy Richardson edged out locals John Cook, Ray Rankin, Cliff James and Ernie Towes in a tight finish.

Some of the local sponsors included Soul Patterson Pharmacy Argyle Jewellers and Lawrence Springborg.

The day began with a minute’s silence for Police Remembrance Day honouring those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. $20 from each team registration was donated toward Farm Hand a Churches of Christ imitative supporting struggling farmers at grass roots level.

President of the Stanthorpe Bowls Club Justin Liddy thanked all the sponsors and volunteers who helped make the day a success. Liddy said the Fast Fours concept was a hit with players and he looks forward to the club hosting similar event in the future.

BALLANDEAN AGM An early reminder that the Ballandean Football Club will be holding their AGM

on Tuesday the 14th of November at the Ballandean Football Club Clubhouse commencing at 7.00pm.

Although al positions will be declared vacant on the night there are people who are willing to put their hand up and contribute once again.

The club will be seeking a replacement for their current Treasurer Nicole Rametta who is planning to step down due to work commitments. There is always room for more volunteers, so if you are able to help in any way make sure you put the AGM date in your diary.

The Ballandean Club is also planning a barbecue on 14 October to raise some funds for Ben Rametta who broke his leg in the Preliminary Final and Paul Dachs ruptured his ACL. Both players played for the Men through the year and the club would like to show their support.. HISTORY IN THE CUPS The Howard and Sons Cup is one of the trophies that Stanthorpe golfers have been competing for many years and last weekend the team of Rob Reeves and Mark McCosker added their name to a long list of previous winners.

The pair played a very good front nine of one under 35 off the stick sending a message to their opponents that they had well and truly brought their best game on Saturday.

The back nine prove a little more difficult for all players, but the pair returned the winning score in the Canadian foursomes finishing one shot clear of Rod Werner and Kev Rowling.

Kay Webb and Lorraine Evans teamed up to win the ladies Canadian foursomes holding out Neta Thouard and Helen Jones who settled for runner-up.

David Burgess won the pin shots on offer at three and 12, and once again there were no takers for 17.

Pro-pins were won by the place getters, Rod Werner at 1/10 and Rob Reeves at 5/14.

Lyle Bryant collected the remaining pro-pin at 9/18.

Hannah Reeves collected the ladies pin at three, Annelle Batterham at 12 and Linda Kelly had best approach at 17.

ALMOST STARTING TIME It is that time of year when thoughts turn to not only the major Spring Racing events in Melbourne big days on our own local racing calendars.

The Warwick and Stanthorpe cup meetings are only weeks away and preparations are well underway for both meetings.

The Warwick Turf club has announced their Ambassador for the big day at Allman park. The face of the 2017 Warwick Cup Day which is only two weeks away is Jess Somes.

Meanwhile, in Stanthorpe preparations are underway for the Stanthorpe Jockey club’s annual Caulfield Cup Day extravaganza.

Big crowds and good fields are expected for both events. Stanthorpe Jockey club chairman Chips Brunckhorst said he and his committee had been working hard in anticipation of another bumper crowd this year.

The recent rain is a welcome relief, and if the prediction of a few more showers over the next couple of weeks is correct, it will see the Stanthorpe track in great order for the upcoming meeting.

VWS REIGN The VW, VDub, Beetle or V Wee depending on your persuasion is that quirky much loved sometime maligned vehicle many of us grew up with, often learned to drive in and fell in love with on the big screen through the Love Bug. Last weekend VWs of every shape colour and model - some almost unrecognisable swarmed into Warwick for the 2017 Volkswagen Drags at Warwick Dragway .

It was impossible to miss the invasion as you drove through the streets of Warwick and an array of the prized possessions took centre stage in Leslie Park on Saturday morning before heading to the track to show their muscles.

Enthusiasts travelled from across Queensland and interstate to either display their vehicles at the Show n Shine or put them through their paces on the 1/8 mile track.

Sunday’s racing was interrupted with rain delays, but it did not seem to affect the spirit of the competitors or the big crowd.

Craig Hughes of VW Magazine Australia said despite the showers and an earlier than anticipated end due to the rain, the event was another success and there was enough racing to get a result.

Once bitten by the VW Bug you’re hooked for life it seems.

SOUTHERN STARS PREPARE While the Aussie cricketers struggle in the one day series in India, the Australian Women’s team have put the disappointment and demons of their shock exit from the Women’s World Cup behind them and are focusing on their upcoming Ashes series against the Poms.

The team hit the training paddock in a training camp in Brisbane this week.

It’s the first time the Australian players have come together since being knocked out of the tournament semi-finals in the United Kingdom in late July, with the week-long camp to provide valuable training time ahead of the first Commonwealth Bank Women’s Ashes ODI on 22 October.

On Saturday, there will be mixed social bowls as usual. Play starts at 1pm with names to be in between noon and 12.30pm. There will be the usual trophies on offer, as well as a chance to win the jackpot, which is now a substantial amount.

A cool morning on Sunday with variable wind made for more pleasant conditions for the competition, with a good attendance for the various classes.
