All the right moves By Kyra Gillespie At just 16 years of age, Pakenham teenager Victoria Hendrick is the best female chess player in the state. Speaking with Star News’s Pakenham Gazette at the start of the year when she was 15, Victoria was the best female player in her age group at the time. Now, nearly a year on, she has surpassed her age category and is now the best in the open age section for the whole of Victoria. Having only started playing in year seven at lunchtime at Pakenham Secondary College, Victoria is up against competitors who have many years of experience on her and who receive private chess tutoring. But she doesn’t seem too fazed for Victoria, it’s all about the joy of the game. “I play because I love it,” she said. “Chess helps me to forget about stress at home and at school. “When I’m playing I forget about all my troubles and just focus on the game. “Even if you play and lose, you still win in that you learn something new in each game.” Chess tutors Christian Ampongan and Sergio De Lima both expressed pride in how Victoria is progressing. “The event organisers were really impressed with how far she has come in such a short space of time,” Mr Ampongan said.

“It just shows that hard work pays off.” Not only has Victoria outdone players in her age group, but she’s even gone on to beat her teachers. “She beats us all the time” Mr De Lima said with a laugh. “Chess is quite a sexist sport as it is very male-dominated, but at our school the girls team are the strongest. It’s fantastic.” Boys become quite disgruntled when they are beaten by Victoria, according to her tutors. “She’s got the will and determination and that will take her places,” Mr De Lima said. Victoria will be competing for the national title next month at the Victorian State Finals, but insists that her school holidays will be chess-free. “I think I need a break, I’ve been playing way too much,” Victoria said.

Band thrives on live heat By Cam Lucadou-Wells There’s been little time to sit back and relax for Berwick band Social on the Veranda. The four-piece indie rock outfit made up of Conor Bermingham (vocals/guitar), Ben Rohy (guitar), Brent Morrison (bass) and Jesse Porter (drums) have been together for just 11 months. In that time, the up-and-coming 18-year-olds won the Casey Battle of the Sounds, progressing to the regional heats of the FReeZA competition. They have created their first single, and are set to launch their first EP, Caught in the Chaos. Bermingham, who grew up in Ireland, said the group was influenced by British rock band Catfish and the Bottlemen. As they played, the band quickly congealed into a “really cool energy”. He says Social on the Veranda thrives on live shows. Its albums are a platform to play to an audience, and provide feel-good music with universal appeal. “It’s not a really ‘me’ genre. We try to make it so that everyone will listen to it and enjoy it. It’s simple songs that people can relate to.” At the recent Battle of the Sounds, the audience reciprocated by voting the band as the crowd favourite - along with winning the favour of the judges. Some of the group are finishing off Year 12 studies but they’ve managed to cram in a few gigs across the breadth of greater Melbourne. Sadly, none in Casey as yet - but Bermingham hopes they can play at Hallam Hotel after its revamp. “We’re going to take it as far as we can. “Our main goal is to write good music and meet as many good people on the way. “We’d love to travel the world, I suppose.” Brent Morrison, Jesse Porter, Conor Bermingham Social on the Veranda launches its EP, and Ben Rohy. Shed-full of men’s health By Bonny Burrows A men’s social support group recently celebrated five years of friendship, support and giving back. The Bunurong Men’s Shed Pakenham’s fifth birthday bash, held on 29 October, was a celebration of what the club had achieved over the past five years and a look at the exciting activities planned for the future. Members, their families, residents and Cardinia Shire Mayor Brett Owen all joined in on the festivities, which included a delicious lunch. Speaking to the Gazette, the men’s shed’s president Les Jacobs highlighted just some of the community projects the group had been involved in. However, he said it was the changes to members’ health that he was particularly proud of. “Two guys have said they no longer feel suicidal,” Mr Jacobs said. “That’s no small feat.” Men’s health has been a focal point of the group since its establishment at Meadowvale Retirement Village in 2012. The shed prides itself on the ability to discuss and promote health and wellbeing without “shoving it down members’ throats”. Mr Jacob said men of retirement

age were particularly susceptible to feelings of isolation and depression. A man’s work was his life, he said. “When a man retires he’s lost all his workmates and he’s often alone. “Suddenly when that work gets taken away from men they don’t know what to do,” Mr Jacob said. Mr Jacob said the informal setting of the shed, which included comfortable spaces for chats and a work area, meant men didn’t feel pressured to open up, it just came naturally. “When men get working together they start talking,” Mr Jacobs said. “They tend to talk more here than with their wives at home.” Along with discussion on mental health, the shed has its own resident welfare officer and offers regular health checks. “We’re more than just fixing furniture,” Mr Jacobs said. “We’re very much focused on men’s health, looking after one another.” Cardinia Shire Mayor Brett Owen said men’s sheds such as Bunurong’s were “fantastic” for men and men’s health. “But not only for men, but the wider community as well,” councillor Owen said.

support to some of the shire’s most vulnerable residents. A safe place for men to come interact and talk,” Cr Owen said.

“The shire has seen an increase in men’s sheds in the last five years and I congratulate the Bunurong Men’s Shed on all it has achieved.”

Shield in Harley’s memory was crowded with love By Kyra Gillespie The Pakenham Cricket Ground was crowded with family and friends of Harley Hulme on Friday 29 September to celebrate the second Harley ‘Chopper’ Hulme shield. In memory of a good cricket player and an even better friend, the Pakenham Cricket Club and Jindivick Cricket Club went head to head, with Pakenham ultimately coming out on top. “We had about 150 people come along on the day, it was a really good turnout,” long-time friend Zac Chaplin said. “The shield went really well last year and it’s a good way to come together in memory of Harley. “It’s a good feeling for me and his close mates, it gives us a chance to catch up and hang out.” The event started around noon and continued well into the afternoon. Being a public holiday, Zac said that attendees were in high spirits. “Grand Final eve is a good and easy day to host it as most people don’t have work.” Before the game kicked off, close friends Cal and Bianca performed Harley’s favourite song Piano Man, a tradition they have established since last year’s shield. Despite being an easy day, there was a lot of hard work that went on in the

Die-hard, Tigerish grins ... By Cam Lucadou-Wells Richmond’s rampaging AFL premiership win was perhaps a surprise to many - not least, some of the expectant Adelaide players. But not to some of the Tigers diehard supporters in Narre Warren South. As Kim Chante told Star News several weeks ago, she had a premonition at the start of the year that Richmond would win the 2017 flag. Like a bolt out of the blue, she had seen coach Damien ‘Dimma’ Hardwick holding aloft the premiership cup. Then she saw it again on the last Saturday of September. “You know how over the years, you’re watching a side and thinking, ‘Oh my God they’re good’.” “I had never felt that with Richmond until the last three or four games. “How good is it?” Cheer squad member of 30 years Dave ‘Gecko’ Coppin was also bullish throughout the year. He tearfully declared in an emotional video with Footy Fan TV straight after the game: “I told you we’d win this ... from Round One.” To the “haters” that had called him a “flog” and a “dog” throughout the year, he said: “Richmond beat the f***ing world!” He reflected that at that stage - after a 37-year drought - it had finally hit him that Richmond had won. “To see 200 mates (in the cheer squad) crying there, it was hard not to cry at the end. I’ve known them for 30 years, they’re your family.” It was the midst of 48 hours of buildup and celebration, including partying from Saturday night to sunrise, followed by the Richmond best-and-fairest count on 2 October and then Tiger Tuesday at a Bridge Road pub.

And the next day, he fronted back at work, still basking in the glory. In the meantime, he’s hunted some priceless Grand Final items to his vast Tigers memorabilia, including a premiership banner and jumper as well as WEG and Mark Knight souvenir posters. The most treasured is a replica premiership medal presented by club legend Matthew Richardson, as well as being singled out for thanks by fullforward Jack Riewoldt. It was fitting reward for Mr Coppin’s loyal support, including the dark times in the late 1980s and early 1990s when he rattled tins to save the club from bankruptcy. Now it’s possible that Richmond will sign up 100,000 members next year, dwarfing the AFL’s other largest clubs, he said. “It’s all worth it.”

Darryl Johanning, who had missed the preliminary final due to a footy trip in Tassie, snared the hardest ticket in town - a Grand Final seat at the MCG. With the help of business contacts, he found a $500 ticket to witness history. “What a great day! It was a bit nervewracking still at half time. “But at the 15-20 minute mark of the last quarter, it was all over. “We were all hugging blokes you don’t even know.” After partying into the night, Mr Johanning then woke up. And it was his birthday. “We went out for lunch and then I made sure I watched the replay with some mates that afternoon. “I’ve watched it three times now.” Mr Johanning said he’d never thought he’d see another Richmond premiership. “Now I just want to get another one!”

Brock memorabilia on show By Cam Lucadou-Wells Motorsport legend Peter Brock’s first racing car was an open cabin “paddock basher” without brakes, his last was a 1948 Holden ‘Humpy’. Unbelievably for Brock fans, both will be together on public display with up to 400 other stunning exhibits at a custom vehicle show at Akoonah Park Men’s Shed. Both cars will be loaned from the same anonymous collector, who keeps them and other Brock memorabilia in a private museum. The paddock basher is a 1938 Austin 7 that Brock used to race like a go-kart on his family farm and the back roads of Hurstbridge. Being without brakes, Brock would throw the car into a slide to stop it. The other specimen is a Holden 48/215, modified for Brock’s final track race in Greenwood, UK, before he fatally crashed in a car rally in Western Australia in 2006. It still sports the famous 05 decals. Brock stands in a realm of his own as an Australian racing car driver, who won the Bathurst 1000 nine times. He’ll remain as one of Australia’s folklore heroes, show organiser Nick Bolis said. “These cars don’t go out on display but they’ve been kindly lent to us for the day. “We are so privileged to have these.” Mr Bolis said the collector had a jaw-dropping set of racing and classic cars. Some that

sprung to mind was Brock’s Austin A40, EH Holden and famous 05 racing Commodore, as well as rare Cadillacs and Dodges. Mr Bolis himself collects striking classic cars, such as a short-deck-tailed 1961 Cadillac de Ville. He bought it from the original owner in California three years ago. Though less luxurious than the Cadillac El Dorado, the car would have originally sold for close to the cost of a house, he says. Its extravagance was emblematic of the post-World War II boom and became a status symbol. Its awkwardly large turning circle and immense length makes it difficult for suburban outings but it still handles the corners during a Dandenong Ranges cruise. Also on display is a twotoned 1949 Pontiac with a fivelitre Chevrolet motor and smart chrome bonnet emblem that looks just like the original. It’s owned by Akoonah Park Men’s Shed member Len Vidler. Another is the bold, red 1965 Mustang coupe with red leather cabin and seats owned by Maurice Hall. Classics In the Park is at Akoonah Park on Sunday, 29 October, 8am-2pm. A 29-year-old Berwick man allegedly blew .056 on the morning of Saturday 30 September after Prahran Highway Patrol officers set up a booze bus site on Toorak Road in Toorak. The man received a fine for drink driving. A 24-year-old Cranbourne North man was also caught in the drink driving blitz, returning an alleged reading of .123. The man’s vehicle was also impounded at a cost of $896.10 and his licence suspended for 12 months. Prahran Highway Patrol Senior Constable James Smith said he was appalled by the lack of judgement and concern shown for fellow road users. “Drivers with readings this high are barely capable of stringing a sentence together, let alone travelling at speeds of 100km/h on one of our major freeways,” he said. “It’s irresponsible and poses a danger not only to themselves but other motorists, pedestrians and innocent bystanders.” The booze bus formed part of Operation Scoreboard, which finished on Sunday 1 October, was a state-wide focus targeting speed, driver distraction, seatbelt non-compliance, fatigue and drink and drug driving in an effort to reduce road trauma. Prahran Highway Patrol Senior Constable Therese Szulik said nabbing one in 50 drink drivers in less than two hours were appalling. “Operation Scoreboard is widely publicised and we will be saturating the streets this weekend in an effort to remove dangerous drivers from Victorian roads,” she said.

Socially speaking On Wednesday 27 September the Cranbourne-Berwick News Facebook Page shared a story of police investigating a firearms incident which occurred in Cranbourne North on Tuesday 26 September. Officers were called to an address in Josephine Avenue about 11.10pm, after reports that shots had been fired into a premises. Fortunately no-one was injured during the incident. Casey Highway Patrol had a busy 30-minute period on Grand Final day, Saturday 30 September, with two drivers keen to attract their attention. At 7.50pm a 19-year-old Narre Warren man was caught driving at 114km/h in an 80km/h section of the Princes Highway. The P1 driver was intercepted and lost his licence for a month as well as receiving a penalty notice for $515 and losing four demerit points. At 8.20pm the same crew observed a Ford Territory fishtail on the Princes Highway at Hallam. The Ford was followed and then clocked at 74km/h in a 50km/h zone. Police intercepted the car and spoke to the 21-year-old P2 driver from Murrumbeena. He was given a preliminary breath test and was required to undergo an evidentiary test at the station. He returned an alleged reading of 0.066 and is expected to be summonsed for drink driving and numerous other traffic offences. The intercepts formed part of Operation Scoreboard, a state-wide focus on road user behaviour targeting speed, driver distraction, seatbelt noncompliance, fatigue and drink and drug driving in an effort to reduce road trauma.

Indian look at Oz By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Fountain Gate tourist business is helping sell the Australian university experience to prospective students from India. Safir Tours organised a national tour for 49 visiting students, including a stop at Federation University in Berwick on 3 October. Safir Tours chief executive Nayaz Noor said Australia was an attractive option. It was easier for students to get visas, relatively cheap for fees and cost of living, and was known as the “safest place in the world”. “Australia is a land of immigrants, so it’s easier for international students to fit in. “The educational level is on par with any part of the world, whether it’s the UK or US.” The students, from Years 7-12 at Delhi Public School, were typically from India’s middle to upper classes and would tour campuses in US, Europe and Australia before settling on their choice of university. Their families paid $2700 per student for the one-week excursion. Ablett’s life testimony By Cam Lucadou-Wells Nathan Ablett doesn’t get too carried away with being part of footballing folklore. Four days after Richmond’s euphoric AFL Grand Final, the former Geelong and Gold Coast forward still hasn’t watched the match. A laconic Mr Ablett - who has lived in the shadow of his famed father Gary and brother Gary Junior - is set to reveal his personal life journey at a meeting at the evangelical Catch the Fire Ministries church in Hallam. Now living in Cranbourne and a member of the church, he says he has no set agenda, but just to give a testimony and respond to questions from the floor. “I believe everyone can have their own opinions, but what better opinion than the one who created this. “That’s where I get my right and wrong.” He said he’d moved out this side of town to play with Warragul Football Club. It had given him the chance to be close to many cousins and relatives, such as his uncle, footballer and Casey councillor Geoff Ablett. He wasn’t sure if he’ll soon be reunited with brother Gary Jr, who is speculated to be leaving the Gold Coast Suns for Victoria. Looking back, Mr Ablett recalls the great jump from playing in country league paddocks to kicking goals in the AFL. It was new to him and he didn’t know how to deal with it, he says. “I had hardly trained, maybe just once a month, before I entered the AFL. “It became a full-time thing. Even on your day off, you’ve got to look after yourself; you’ve got to be

aware of your diet. “It’s a very serious profession.” He remembers the high of playing in Geelong’s drought-breaking premiership in 2007 took time to sink in. He’d been quite relaxed on the day, helped by being in one of history’s great teams. He looks back on that barnstorming season and his team-mates, the funny moments and the trips away - they’re the things that mean more to him than the Grand Final day itself. “It’s nice to know, you’ve been through it, especially when you talk about a lot of people who’d like to win a premiership. “I don’t sleep in my jumper still or anything like that. It’s a good memory.” After that Grand Final, he suddenly quit the Cats. He explains that it was partly because he was too shy to talk to others about the pressure. He wishes he shared more about what he was going through, such as how to deal with being in newspapers, the pressures of performance and dealing with injuries. There were weeks when he felt that he’d rather not play the next game. He became preoccupied with footy, footy, footy and wished he used his spare time to occupy himself with study or other interests. “I was pretty raw, and I wasn’t understanding that a lot of the other guys were going through the same thing. “As you grow up, you start to be more relaxed and get along with people more.” Since AFL, he’s been a journeyman playing for Werribee’s VFL side and Gold Coast Suns, and travelling to NSW. He says everyone has a reason or purpose in life.

A Narre Warren serial burglar has told police that driving the wrong way at a fast speed and into head-on traffic on Peninsula Link was “not that bad”. Benjamin Delphin placed other drivers at serious risk, forcing them to take “urgent evasive action” to avoid him in the stolen silver Suburu Impreza on 9 January, police told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 2 October. The Impreza, which had been stolen from a Cranbourne home earlier that day, was found burnt out in Berwick on 10 January. During a police interview, Delphin denied stealing the car. He said he’d been given the keys by a younger relative. The driving was “reckless at times but not that bad”, he told police. He also pleaded guilty to stealing an Endeavour Hills man’s four-wheel-drive with a trailer. Using credit cards stolen from the victim’s wallet, Delphin and two other males bought more than $500 of items from four servos in Pakenham 12366459-LB39-17

and Berwick, as well as food from McDonald’s in Berwick that morning. The vehicle was later found burnt-out in Homestead Road, Berwick. The trailer and wallet have not been recovered. Delphin was also charged over successive commercial break-ins, starting with a servo in Narre Warren South on 11 January. About 3.15am, he reversed a Nissan Skyline against the front door bollards and smashed his way through the glass doors with metal bolt-cutters. He was unable to break his way into a locked cigarette cabinet, but stole a blue, plastic fuel tank meter. Ten minutes later, Delphin and a co-accused male successfully smashed into a Narre Warren South supermarket and into its cigarette cabinet, stealing $2500 of cigarettes and other items. That day, the pair was arrested and cigarettes were seized during a police raid of a Narre Warren house. Most of the stolen cigarettes weren’t recovered, the court heard. Delphin told police he was drug-fuelled at the time, steal-

ing cigarettes to get more drugs. He also pleaded guilty to unlicensed driving, driving an unregistered vehicle, a petrol drive-off as well as two shoplifting episodes at Target stores. In the latter offences, he shoved $2000 worth of iPads, headphones and a speaker down his pants. The court heard that Delphin’s parents had both abused drugs and served jail terms as he grew up. He’d also suffered significant family violence at a young age, started using drugs at 13 and had spent time in custody as a child and adult. Delphin had only experienced family support recently, through the family of his partner, a defence lawyer said. He had been released from jail without parole mid last year, and had never been given the chance of trying a supervisory order, the lawyer said. Magistrate Pauline Spencer said she was considering whether to jail Delphin for longer than the six months he’d already spent in remand. His jail term was to be followed by a community corrections order, Ms Spencer said.

When building a new home there are a number of costs associated with prepping the site ready for our builders to come in and start laying foundations. These are things like an onsite toilet, scaffolding and security fencing, to name a few - and, if you’ve been past a building site recently, you’ll will have noticed all of these. On top of all that, there are the paperwork costs, such as permits and tests that must be carried out before any work can commence. And while some of these can be completed by you, we usually take all the legwork over so you can get on with day to day life. So ... there are legitimate building site costs that must be covered and included in the total cost of the build. Home grounds for Nossal By Cam Lucadou-Wells Nossal High School has unveiled its new sporting grounds with a 50-over match against a visiting New Zealand school team. Nossal’s senior cricket coach Ian Pegram said the grounds were an eagerly awaited addition for the school’s soccer, Aussie-rules and cricket teams as well as the PE program and lunchtime recreation. The squads had previously had to bus to Sweeney Reserve to play ‘home’ games. For the record, the visiting John McGlashan College team defeated the home side during the 3 October game by 30 runs. “We had time in hand, but just ran out of wickets,” Mr Pegram said.

Board boost for fund-raiser Two new directors have been welcomed on to the Casey Cardinia Foundation board as the local philanthropic group prepares for its biggest fundraiser for the year next Friday night. Khans Hospitality Services operations manager John Barbaressoss and Aligned Leisure Cardinia manager Simon Bryson both know about hosting big events. In his role at Khans, Mr Barbaressoss has overseen many major events, particularly at the Cardinia Cultural Centre, which again hosts the Foundation’s annual charity dinner on 13 October. And Mr Bryson is coming off a huge weekend. He has a match day role with Richmond Football Club, which is connected to Aligned Leisure, and had his hands full as the Tigers broke a 37-year drought to take the AFL premiership on Saturday 30 September. Mr Bryson looks after match day activations for the Tigers and was on deck at the MCG on Saturday. “It has been very busy, but also very rewarding,” he said. “I just loved every part of seeing all the fans at Punt Road on Sunday,” he told the Gazette on Monday afternoon, looking to head back out for the club’s best and fairest count that night. Mr Bryson has worked in the leisure industry for 15 years, having started as a cleaner at 16 and worked his way through to being Cardinia Leisure manager. He had worked in the western suburbs and inner Melbourne before heading out to Cardinia to join Aligned Leisure, where he quickly developed a connection with the community. “I have been fortunate in my career and really taken to the community in the relatively short time I have been out here and feel I want to give something

He became actively involved in the Casey community, particularly in the multicultural arena, volunteering many hours. That largely inspired Mr Barbaressoss’ tilt at the Foundation board. “My father played a big part in that,” he said. He also brings a lot of event and

hospitality knowledge to the position, which will fill the void left by Khans principal Adam Sadiqzai when he retires from the board next year. The annual charity ball is the Foundation’s biggest fundraising event for the year. This year 13-piece music sensation Big and Horny will provide the entertainment.

Dundee Osprey retires By Mick Floyd Dundee Osprey, one of the most consistent - and brilliant - chasers to grace Sandown Park this decade, has been retired. The 35kg son of Fabregas departs the track with $538,600 in prize money next to his name after winning a number of greyhound feature events, including the Group 1 Topgun, HarrisonDawson and Sale Cup. “It’s been a really good ride with him for sure,” said his trainer Geoff Scott-Smith. “He’s my best mate. We kind of feed off each other. I’d take him to the track and it was like he was trying to win for me.” The mutual affection and admiration between the greyhound and his trainer is clear as Dundee Osprey bounces around a paddock on ScottSmith’s Pakenham South property. As Dundee Opsprey - ‘Uno’ as he’s known at home - races over to his owner, Scott-Smith gets emotional as he describes what his champion means to him. “I don’t really have a need for the money, I’m retired now and own my

place. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice but it’s not what I do it for. It (training greyhounds) gives you a purpose, a reason to get out of bed each morning. Getting a dog into tip top condition to be the best they can be is very satisfying.” Dundee Osprey’s racing career began in unconventional fashion. His first race was in a coursing event at Lang Lang as an 18-month-old pup where he reached the semi-final of the Derby. Two months later he won on his race track debut in a heat of the VicBred maiden at Warrnambool, but despite the early success he had given no indication of the success that lay ahead. “The whole litter chased straight away. Early on you knew he was a good chaser but at that stage you never thought he’d be a world beater,” ScottSmith said. “The first few trials at Warragul and Geelong were just so-so. He had a couple of niggles early on, he broke a fibula and had a couple of months off, then he got crook and we had to late scratch him at Sandown one night. But once we got all of that fixed up and put him over 500m, after a few trials he was flying.”

Picture: COURTESY OF SANDOWN GREYHOUNDS After a couple of impressive wins at Cranbourne, Dundee Osprey made headlines at his 14th start when he blitzed his rivals to win in a stunning 29.109 at Sandown Park, a time that even amazed the man who knew him best. “I took him there on a Saturday morning for his first 500m run and he ran 29.50,” Scott-Smith said. “I thought that’s pretty good, his run home time was flying. But when

he ran the 29.11, I saw the clock and thought geez that can’t be right, but obviously it was. “He seemed to take a shining to Sandown.” Dundee Osprey contested an amazing 18 group finals throughout his decorated career, with 12 of them being at Sandown Park. He would finish with an 11-7-4 record from 29 starts at Sandown Park, including multiple wins over each distance. He won the group 1 Harrison-Dawson (515 metres), the listed Cup Night Middle Distance (595m) and 2016 Speed Star (515m). He also finished second in the Group 1 Sandown Cup (715m), group 2 McKenna Memorial (595m) and group 3 Sir John Dillon Memorial (595m) - beaten a total of 3.5 lengths in those finals winning $277,880 at Sandown Park alone. However, his biggest win according to his trainer was at the Meadows when he defeated a star-studded line up in the 2016 Topgun. On a cold and wet night, Dundee Osprey defied the horrendous conditions - and box 8 - to register a career-defining victory. “Most of his big wins came in bad conditions - rain, cold, wet - he seemed

to thrive in those conditions and that was one of those nights,” Scott-Smith added. “He was feeling really good, he was jumping out of his skin. I gave him a big chance in the race, I thought if he could get around that corner in third spot and get a sit on them, even if he was five or six lengths off them he could run them down and that’s exactly what happened. You couldn’t write the script any better. “He gave those speedsters about a six-length start and beat them by three. By Russell Bennett West Gippsland Cricket Association Premier division 2017/18 - season preview Just when will the balance of power in the West Gippsland Cricket Association’s top tier shift? Logic says it has to eventually, but with the new Premier season beginning this weekend Kooweerup, Pakenham and Cardinia again loom as real powerhouses alongside the starstudded Tooradin. Last season the gap from the fourth and last finals position to those stuck on the outside looking in - from fifth to eighth - ballooned. The Bulls finished in fourth, 32 competition points clear of Upper Beaconsfield in fifth and Merinda Park in sixth. A super-competitive Clyde is set to push last year’s finalists right from the outset this year with a particularly strong allround line-up only improved from their off-season acquisitions. A Premier finals berth in year one looks well within reach. The Cougars could be a power for years to come, but beyond them the likes of Upper Beaconsfield, Merinda Park and Emerald could struggle. Though all three have topend talent - particularly the Maroons - once again they likely won’t have enough to consistently trouble the powerhouses. A look around the division shows plenty to be excited about for fans. Te Ahu Davis (Cardinia) and Mitch Davey

Tooradin should never be underestimated and under a new club coach - Gulls favourite son Ricky Holland - and co-captains Aaron Avery and Cal O’Hare, they’ll be out to breathe fire from the outset. They know they have to stand up against last year’s other top four sides. Their side definitely has the talent, and the upside is there, but they’ve got to put it together when it counts most. It’s come around quick, but now that we’re just days away, we can’t wait for this new season to start!

Bowlers back on the greens PAKENHAM BOWLS In what now seems the distant past, Midweek Pennant Bowls was a competition for ladies only while the Saturday game was an all male affair. However that situation changed some years back when the ladies (many of whom could not play on a Tuesday due to work commitments) won a court verdict which gave them the right to participate in Saturday Pennant. As a flow-on from that decision, men also began to play on Tuesdays, gradually at first, but now in large numbers. Somehow however, the women won back the right to a separate ladies only competition and in a “Back to the Future” move, Pakenham is to field a team at Division One level in this format in the 2017/18 season. Originally the brainchild of the Pakenham board of management and with club sponsor and member Jennifer Bainbridge assisting with the organisation, the team has attracted a number of quality lady bowlers from other clubs, including former Pakenham Ladies Champion Kerry Lewis who returns after an absence of a number of years. With a nucleus of Pakenham bowlers (some relatively new to the game) this group has a mixture of differing levels of experience. They have all put in a considerable amount of practice during the off season and should therefore function well as a team when they fire their first shots in anger. Good luck and good bowling ladies. Ironically, the Division One team (now designated Pakenham Two) in the Open Midweek competition is now almost guaranteed to be an all-male combination. MIDWEEK PENNANT Pennant play resumed for the midweek competition on Tuesday 26 September except for the ladies only section which commences on 10 October (Pakenham has a bye). Saturday

Pakenham Two (Div 1 - Open) kicked off the season with the narrowest of wins away at Keysborough - one rink up, one down and a draw on the third for a one shot margin, 70 shots to 69. Best rink with a 25 to 19 scorecard was Gary Crowley (S), Jim Williams (3), Terry McRedmond (2) and Ned Courtin (L). The Twos will be at home to Berwick in Round 2. The Open Div 3 Thirds were at home to Cranbourne RSL for a very satisfying 83/44 win with two rinks up and one drawn. Best rink by far was Charles Harris (S), John Moore (3), Ray Leggett (2) and Ray Pigdon (L) with a massive score of 39 to 9. The Threes will be away at Narre Warren in Round 2. In what is another break with tradition, Pakenham has entered a team in the Open Six-A-Side Midweek Pen-

nant competition. Once the ladies only group commences their season there will therefore be four Pakenham teams playing on Tuesdays. This new group started their season in the best possible way, winning across the board for an overall tally of 39 shots to 31. Best rink was John Hickman (S), Joy Tomlin (2) and Patricia Morris (L) with a score of 21 to 16. The Fours will also be at Narre Warren next round. OFF SEASON The Winter Pairs was again a very successful and popular off season activity for the club. As an added bonus, a number of the members of the new ladies team were recruited from the winter bowlers. Two long-time servants of the club received a pleasant surprise at this year’s AGM with John (Mulga) Shelton and Des Leigh both being awarded Life Membership.

Season kicks off with a big win CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS The Cardinia Waters Midweek Division 2 side celebrated the first game on their new green by defeating Dandenong Club last Tuesday. The final score was 64 to 53. Skipper Phil Wynd with Dennis Patmore, Dennis Stephenson and new member Ray Naylor lost the first end and were eight all on the eighth end but won the next eight and coasted to a 26 to 12 victory. David Blake with Donny Gibson making a comeback, Doug Eastick and Bill Hite were down eight to seven on the ninth end but won the next six end and hung on to win 18 to 15.

John Van Vugt skipped for Simon Koning, Del Dance, and John Bacon. They started well but fell behind to be down 11 to 23 on the 14th end but a very good finish which made a big difference to the overall score saw them go down only 20 to 26. The Division 3 side visited Willow Lodge and won two rinks out of three but went down by 13 shots, 60 to 73. Brian Byrne skipped for Alan Copley, Rae Richardson and Tom Gogan. They were six all on the seventh end but a five on the tenth end gave them a break and they held on to win 22 to 17. Skipper Gary Solomons, back from Pakenham skipped for Gary Bonfield,

Ian Smith and Marie Stephenson. They battled early and were down seven to nine on the ninth end, but a big seven on the tenth gave them the lead. They got behind again on the 15th end but finished well, scoring 12 to nil over the five ends to have a comfortable win, 29 to 22. Jenny Edmonds had an 'all girl’ side, Michele Bondfield, Judy Wynd and new member Jill Naylor. They battled hard all day but were unable to get into the game and lost nine to 34. The Saturday Pennant kicks off on Saturday. The Division 4 side are hosts to neighbours Pakenham and the Division 1, 12-a-side team travel to South Oakleigh.

PAKENHAM GOLF MONDAY Pakenham Golf Club memebers decided to mix it up a bit and play a Pairs Multiplication Stableford. The difficult part of this game is if you have a four pointer and your partner has zero, then four times zero is zero. The winners on the day were Albert Campbell and Alan Borch with 77 points on a countback from Frankie Chiu and Noel Boyd. WEDNESDAY The comp was Stableford and the scoring was fantastic again. The members that played all through winter are really dominating the comps as there is a bit more run on the course. The A Grade winner was Harry Elyasie on 43 points which is an amazing score, however the win was on a countback from Colin Crowle. Although he didn’t win, it was a great result for Colin as he has been struggling with his game. Well played Colin. The B Grade was decided on a countback as well with Peter Diss winning with 41 points over Graeme Steel. Graeme has been playing quality golf the whole of September. Nice going Graeme. Robert Edwards won the Supercomp with 21 points which was played around the front nine this week. You needed 36 points to win a ball. Harry Elyasie and Frankie Chiu won on their Scratchie sticker. THURSDAY The ladies played 4BBB Stableford and Kay Jones and Diane Boyd won with 39 points. The runner-up was the team of Joan Rawson and Anne Dono-

van with 36 points. It was pleasing to see so many ladies play and dress up in their footy gear. FRIDAY The great weather and being a public holiday brought out 43 players to try and knock Harry off his “Friday Comp” pedestal. It seemed like “Ground Hog” day because Harry Elyasie won again. He had 43 points again and he also won with his Scratchie. The unlucky runner-up was Ron Horne with 41 points which would normally be good enough, but Harry is currently playing exceptional golf. You needed 36 points to win a ball. SATURDAY On Grand Final Day it was decided to have a shot gun start at 8am so it would be possible to still play golf then watch the big game. The golf played was again at a high level and the overall winner was Steve Northcott with 40 points. The B Grade runner-up was Mark Hatton with 38 points. The A Grade winner was Jon Game with 38 points with second place going to last week's winner David Mair. The C Grade winner was Andrew Heagney with 40 points and the runner-up was Peter “Reedy” Korteman on 38 points. The club gave every player a free Scratchie prior to their game and a few players were successful and had a win. Congrats to Mark Hatton, Peter Korteman, Jon Game and Steve Northcott. SUNDAY The winner was Tim Pratt with 38 points. Well done Tim but hopefully you will learn to par the 18th one year.

A slick and stunning ride By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring The Audi RS 3 provides strong driving enjoyment for those who want it all and want it now - it is both a full-on sports machine and a family car. The RS 3 we tested was enhanced by an extended black high gloss styling package with added side air inlet ducts and front blade and trim strips on the side windows. The rear diffuser, side window frames, mirrors and horizontal struts are also in high gloss black. The 19-inch lightweight wheels sit inside 235/35 tyres. Audi can fit 255/30 tyres up front if requested. The power race with the Mercedes A45 continues but the extra 25 per cent of capacity of the Audi unit is giving it a big edge. It now has 294 kW of power, 24 kW up on its predecessor. Peak torque of 480 Nm comes in at just 1700 rpm and remains there all the way to 5850 revs. This powertrain can get the RS 3 sedan to 100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds. Beside the RS 3 sedan’s engine is a seven-speed S tronic (double-clutch) automatic with ratios geared for performance in the lower end and a high seventh gear for reduced fuel consumption. It has steering wheel mounted paddles. Audi’s famed quattro all-wheeldrive system shifts torque between

The first small Audi sedan with the RS package the RS 3 is a stunner visually and under the skin. front and rear axles, anything from 50 to 100 per cent can be sent to the back. Controls are by a rotary/push button on the centre console. The rotary/push button control features a touchpad. Front seat occupants can draw letters or numbers with their finger, swipe and zoom in

the map. Voice control adds to the convenience. Online services are provided by Audi Connect. A smartphone interface integrates selected apps into the car using Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Navigation uses Google Earth and

Google Street View. Satellite navigation-plus is standard and there are up to five free updates. Naturally there’s Bluetooth for audio streaming and hands-free phone. There’s 10 GB of flash memory for media storage, two card readers, an Aux connection and a USB interface with charging function. An excellent Bang and Olufsen sound system with 15-channel amplifier, 14 speakers with total output of 705 Watts was a $1495 option in our RS 3. Its output is magnificent. Power and torque are relentless in the way they drive all four wheels to overtake with a minimum of time on the wrong side of the road. Hills, what hills? The Audi simply ignores them. Select Sport mode and the exhaust is just glorious in the way it produces the snap-crackle-pop sounds we just love and the Audi Drive Select lets the driver control the opening and closing of the flaps individually. Electronic stability control and traction control have two modes - full operation and Sport. Pushing the button for more than three seconds disengages the ESC

completely for more sporty handling, preferably during track days rather than when huge trees sit beside the road. The RS sports seats are deeply bolstered and may be too tight for those of more than average girth. They certainly hold the body firm during spirited driving and uneven road surfaces do make their presence felt. Powerful brakes are already part of the RS package. Carbon ceramic discs with grey calipers are an extra cost option. Squirt it along your favourite backroad driving route and you’re guaranteed to smile. Handling is near neutral despite the nose-heavy bias. Throttle inputs are fast as the engine is probably at max torque all the time, so a fair degree of right-pedal input to the handling is there for the asking. The Audi virtual cockpit replaces analogue instruments. The fully digital instrument cluster with its 12.3-inch monitor presents all information and there is an additional RS screen to complement the two standard views. Audi RS 3 gives a full-on sports machine at a pretty modest price.
