Spring keeps getting bigger By Garry Howe Cranbourne’s massive Spring Racing Carnival footprint is getting bigger and bigger by the year. For the first time in its 150-year history, Cranbourne Turf Club will host a meeting on Australia’s most famous race day. In a real coup, the club has secured a meeting on Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday 7 November, and expects to draw a crowd of around 10,000 people through the gates. This now adds to the Pinker Pinker Plate meeting to kick off the local carnival on Friday 13 October, then the big TAB Cranbourne Cup meeting on Sunday 15 October. The Spring Racing Carnival action then rounds out with the City of Casey Tricodes meeting on Saturday, 18 November - the only venue in Australia where all three codes race at the same time. Racegoers can cash in on the fun. Anyone who books online for the big Spring Racing Carnival meetings is eligible for a two-for-one ticket offer. Then the club moves into its big Christmas Party programs on 24 November, 16 December and 22 December. Chief executive Neil Bainbridge described securing the Melbourne Cup Day meeting it as a real coup for Cranbourne. “There are enormous meetings on Cup Day throughout Australia and it’s fantastic for us to now be among those,” he said.

Polished perfection - the Cranbourne Cup trophies are again up for grabs. 145382 Pictures: ROB CAREW For many years, the racing industry shied away from allowing race meetings to be held within a 200 kilometre radius of Flemington, fearing it would impact on the Cup Day crowds there. But there has been a softening of that attitude of late and - having applied for the past few years - Cranbourne was eventually successful in securing the date. It cements Cranbourne’s link with Australia’s most famous race, which dates back to the town’s first race meeting in April 1867. The main race of that two-day carnival was won by aged gelding Toryboy, who two years earlier had won the Melbourne Cup. Toryboy had run fifth behind Archer in the first Melbourne Cup of 1961 the year Cranbourne was officially gazetted as a town - and was sixth to the same horse the following year.

Cranbourne will host a race meeting on Melbourne Cup Day for the first time in its 150-year history. He missed the 1863-'64 cups and went out at long odds when he won the 1865 race, earning a fortune for his owner, Prahran draper B.C. Marshall.

Mr Bainbridge said there had already been a lot of interest in the Cup Day race meeting, with a lot of hospitality packages already taken up

by eager patrons. He said the meeting was a nice fit to an already busy Spring Racing Carnival program for Cranbourne.

Tiger’s eye on racing stakes By Garry Howe Richmond star Dustin Martin made a clean sweep of the AFL’s silverware this season - with the Brownlow, Norm Smith, Jack Dyer, Gary Ayres and premiership medals all hanging around his heavily tattooed neck. Now the Tiger great has his eye on one of Australian racing’s most sought-after trophies as a part-owner of VRC Derby hopeful Main Stage. Martin and a few Richmond team-mates have a share in the promising three-year-old stayer, in the care of the in-form training combination of Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young at Cranbourne. Main Stage is a 10-1 third favourite in early betting for the blue riband event to be run at Flemington on Saturday, 4 November. “Dustin and a few of the other boys got a syndicate together,” Busuttin told the News this week. “They all came out and saw the horse a couple of months back. “Hopefully some of the luck Dustin has had lately rubs off on the horse.

“He is running well and is shaping up as a genuine chance in the Derby.” Main Stage won at Kilmore on 9 September and has been placed at his other three starts, including his last start at Flemington on 27 September in the Derby Trial over 1800m, beaten by a lip by the Anthony Freedman-trained Tavistock Abbey. They staged a two-horse war up the Flemington straight and finished four lengths clear of third-placed Mutameyel from the Hayes Dabernig camp. Busuttin said Main Stage would run in the listed UCI Stakes at Flemington this Saturday over 1800 metres and would then have another run in either the Caulfield Classic or AAMI Vase before the Derby. Main Stage was sired by the aptly-named Reliable Man an omen if there ever was one for Martin’s growing legion of Richmond fans. “The type of horse he is and his pedigree makes him an ideal Derby horse.” The Busuttin-Young stable is no stranger to Derby success, with Tavago beating subsequent Caulfield Cup winner Jameka in the BMW Australian Derby

2400 at Randwick on 2 April last year at his first Australian start. Tavago franked that form by winning the Sky High Stakes at Rosehill this autumn carnival, beating the highly-fancied Chris Waller import Antonio Giuseppe, and finished ninth in the JRA Cup at Flemington last Sunday at his second start this campaign. He is currently 13th in order of entry for the Emirates Melbourne Cup on 7 November, but Busuttin says this may not be his year. “He is certainly well down the pecking order for the cup,” he said. “We threw him in there as a nomination because you never know.” Busuttin and Young look like having a tilt at the local feature, with the well-performed Anaheim likely to head towards the $300,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup on Sunday 15 October. The recent Flemington winner mixed it in the best three-year-old company in the autumn and certainly didn’t disgrace himself, according to the trainer. “He’s a big chance of going to the Cranbourne Cup,” Busuttin said.

Dustin Martin has cleaned up the AFL silverware this year - and now has his eyes on the VRC Derby trophy as a part-owner of Cranbournetrained hopeful Main Stage.

Main Stage, right, is nosed out by Tavistock Abbey in the Derby Trial at Flemington.

Australian Derby winner Tavago is 13th in order of entry for the Emirates Melbourne Cup for the Cranbourne training combination of Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young.

The well performed Busuttin-Young stayer Anaheim is likely to head to the $300,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup on Sunday 15 October.

Finally stepping up to the Plate By Garry Howe Next Friday night could be an emotional one for Cranbourne trainer Greg Eurell as he saddles up his first runner in a race named in honour of his ill-fated champion mare Pinker Pinker. Cranbourne Turf Club introduced the feature race for mares in honour of the 2011 Cox Plate winner to headline the opening night of its twoday Cup Carnival five years ago. That was soon after Pinker Pinker died from an allergic reaction to treatment only months after claiming the time honoured Moonee Valley classic. Eurell was thrilled that the club chose to honour Pinker Pinker in that way, but has never had a horse ready and capable at the time of the race. Until now that is. Last start Flemington winner Falika will finally fly the Eurell stable flag in the Pinker Pinker Plate next Friday night, 13 October. “It’s a race that has eluded me over the past few years,” Eurell told The News. “I would have loved to have had a runner, but I’ve never had anything around that mark at that time of year.” This year the promising Falika fits the bill perfectly - coming off a Flemington win and having won at Cranbourne over the Plate distance - and has been set specifically for the race. Eurell said it would mean a lot to the stable if Falika were to salute. “To have a race named after your first Cox Plate winner is very meaningful - and the fact that we lost her soon after that makes it even more meaningful,” he explained. Eurell remembers the tragedy like it was yesterday. Pinker Pinker was being prepared for a trip to Sydney when she had an anaphylactic reaction to a treatment administered by a veterinarian. “It came as such a shock,” he said. “I was on my way home from Sandown (races) on the

Back and bigger than ever before, the TAB Cranbourne Cup’s Fashions on the Field is calling all fashionistas to strut their stuff for the chance to win big. As Cranbourne Turf Club Marketing and Membership co-ordinator Cassandra Clark explained, the highly anticipated competition returns to the track armed with a whole new category and an abundance of prizes. “Entering Fashions on the Field is such a fun experience, and everyone is welcome to participate!” Cassandra said. “There is over $10,000 worth of amazing prizes up for grabs across three categories - Lady of the Day, Young Lady of the Day and our brand-new category ‘Gent of the Day’.” Set to cast their eyes over the line-up are this year’s judges- South Gippsland Jewellers owner Toni Van Den Broek, fashion stylist and blogger Simone Farrugia and ‘Hats by Caitrin’ owner Caitrin Kelly. Casey Bruce, former jockey and fashion enthusiast will MC the event. ■ Grandmother’s explosives put cop shop in lockdown

Nan’s bomb scare When 83-year-old Doreen Storti decided to hand in some of her late husband’s old explosives to Cranbourne Police Station, little did she expect “all hell to break loose.” Mrs Storti had been going through her garden shed, when she found a couple of boxes of detonators and 18 sticks of gelignite that her late husband had used in the mining industry, as a registered powder monkey. Not knowing what to do with it, Mrs Storti said she thought “the best thing to do was to” was to hand it in to a police station. “It was all safe because it was all packed in sawdust so that it wouldn’t sweat. It was perfectly safe. We weren’t banging it or crashing it,” Mrs Storti said. But when she walked into Cranbourne Police station on Wednesday 27 September at 11am with the help of her son-in-law and daughter to dispose of the old explosives, Mrs Storti said an evacuation was called. “What happened was the police station was chock-a-block full of people and we couldn’t get any service,” she said. “We went outside the police station and my son-in law rang the Cranbourne police station but they wouldn’t answer the phone so it got diverted to triple-zero and that’s how it all went haywire because it got diverted to the Federal Police and Bomb Squad. She said it “didn’t twig at all” that she may have been perceived to be a terrorist, adding “We’re just country bumpkins.” “I’m an 83 year-old grandmother. I’m hardly a terrorist. I wouldn’t hurt a fly. We thought we were doing the right thing. We didn’t know what else to do with it and all hell broke loose.“ “Out came the blue tapes and the police closed the station for about three or four hours. And I thought oh goodness, there’s no need for all this. “They just thought ‘Holy mackerel

we’re all going to blow up.’ It was really quite funny. They saw the funny side of it in the end.” “We didn’t know what to do with this stuff. We had to obviously get rid of it I had it in my house for 40 years so I knew it was completely safe.” “If it was unsafe it would’ve blown up my house. When it sweats it becomes a bit dangerous. I never touched it. It was in that spot and the kids knew not to touch it. We never had a problem with it.“ Mrs Storti said her late husband Dick Storti, worked in the Wonthaggi coal mines and had an explosives licence. Mr Storti was employed at Glen Forbes where he assisted in road widening. “Dick used to go and blow the rocks out. Everybody was out. The roads were closed while they were blowing. The grader would come and push the rocks over the side. “He was working in 18 inches of coal and he used to lay on his shoulder and shovel the coal. That was good money. That’s what he was after.” Mr Storti also worked on the Snowy Mountains Scheme. After the Cranbourne Police ordeal, Mrs Storti said the matter was “very funny” and her late husband “would’ve had a laugh from heaven.” “But they (police) were fantastic - once they knew that we weren’t terrorists, we weren’t there to hurt them. We just wanted to get rid of this stuff.” Mrs Storti said police inspected her property and “were quite happy there was no more there.” “Not that we had anything to hide,“ she said. “It was all under lock and key, so they were impressed by that. They wanted to come in and inspect where I had it stacked.” Police advised members of the public who wished to hand in such items to contact them before attempting to move any old or unused explosives.

Tiger burning bright again By Brendan Rees Is the Tasmanian tiger is still alive? A Langwarrin resident says he is “100 per cent” sure he spotted one in Langwarrin South recently. The resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, says he had driven barely 300 metres south along West Road, Langwarrin South on Friday 29 September at 6.30pm when the marsupial “strolled across the road like it owned the joint.” “It wasn’t moving quickly. It was casually strolling across the street,” he said. “I cringe every time I say this but I don’t think - I know. I’m 100 per cent.” He said he was driving home with his eightyear-old son, seven-year-old daughter and their eight-year-old friend, Jet after attending the PARC recreation centre in Frankston when they got a “10 to 12 second look” at the animal. “This thing came out of a bit of a cleared area or must have. It’s gone straight in front of us across the road to the big dam there and it crossed into there and disappeared.” He says the kids saw “tiger stripes” on the animal’s back. “I’ve gone ‘Okay.’ I didn’t really see. It just looked like grey patches to me. “It originally looked like a big greyhound. We

A juvenile male thylacine at the Hobart Zoo in 1928, which died the day after this photo was taken. 141684 Picture: Wikimedia Commons got closer and I thought ‘OK, that’s a really long head.’ But it wasn’t a long head. It was a long neck with a largish head.” “We just thought wow, that was freaky.” “The main thing that got us was its tail was a long rod. It was like a stick. That’s when we went ‘Okay, what the hell was that’,” he said. “It was crystal-clear except for a little bit of darkness. All I can say is wow - these things are

supposed to be gone and there they are.” He says he got home not even within a minute “all excited” before he asked his partner to Google a picture of the Tasmanian tiger. “That’s exactly what we just saw,” he said. He said it was slightly dark at the time when they spotted the dog-like animal, adding “It crossed straight in front of our vehicle - 10 metres ahead of our vehicle. We were that close we know we saw one.” It was its long rod tail that stood out, he said. “Near its rear end it seemed to be like a marsupial, a similar shape to a kangaroo’s bum.” He said it was the first time he had seen one: “They’re supposed to be extinct, aren’t they?” But to his dismay, his mobile phone was flat and he didn’t have a camera or a charger at the time to capture the animal. “Pretty cool stuff it was. We’ll keep our eyes open. If we see it again this time we’ll have our phone ready to capture it.” Thylacine researcher and former Cranbourne South resident Michael Moss encouraged people residing in Langwarrin South and around the nearby Langwarrin flora and fauna reserve to check their CCTV to see if a Tasmanian tiger was on the prowl.

“Someone in these areas may have footage of a tiger without knowing it.” He said the Langwarrin South resident’s find on West Road was an exciting revelation. “I have visited this area already and have placed an infra-red trail camera there. Also I have done some night drives with my dash cameras in the backroads in Langwarrin South, and near the Langwarrin flora and fauna reserve.” He said dashboard cameras were the key to proving the animal was not only roaming the Earth, but perhaps even in Casey. On Sunday 23 November, 2014, he says a Casey resident revealed sighting an animal - a cross between a small greyhound and a wallaby “but not either one” on Fultons Road between Baxter and Langwarrin when the animal ran across the road about 15-20 metres in front of their car. This sighting, he said, along with the recent Langwarrin’s South resident’s sighting were about five kilometres apart near the Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve. Mr Moss said if people believed they had sighted what they think might be Tasmanian tiger or had footage, they were welcome to contact him on 0434 904 944.

Tigers’ taste for victory - and gingerbread - is a winner By Brendan Rees

Nowhere to run for these gingerbread men ... customers at Beeton’s Bakery were keen to get their hands on a Richmond gingerbread. 173504 Picture: CONTRIBUTED

trying to do more cupcakes at that time.” And the requests still haven’t stopped. “We got a couple of orders for Sunday coming (8 October) for gingerbread men with shirts on so I’m still going,” Ms Beeton says. “People were like all ’my God, they’re great. You really need to do more of them’,” she says. But she said her family made sure they had time to watch the game. “I put on the door ‘Closed to watch the Tigers’.”

Since arriving in Australia in 2002, the Beeton family have been loyal Richmond supporters. “We are just a new bakery. We opened in April and we’ve gone crazy about trying to think of different ideas to promote the Tigers within the shop.” “We can’t believe the spirit of people coming here. They were coming in and saying ‘go the Tigers’.”

out and we would have to make more. We actually lost track of how many cream sponges we made.” She says she was really taken aback by how popular the Richmond gingerbread men were. “One lady came in at 6.15am and said ‘I saw you on Facebook. What Tigers cakes and food have you got left?’ and I said ‘Well we’ve just got this left’ and she bought them all at 6.15 on the day of the final. We were rapidly and frantically

Run, run as fast as you can, you can’t chase me, I’m the ... Richmond footy gingerbread man. Donning the yellow and black Richmond Tigers footy jersey, these gingerbread men at the Beeton’s Bakery in Cranbourne North were so popular they had little chance of running. With many sleepless nights over the course of a week, the family members of the bakery, who are also die-hard Tiger fans, worked tirelessly to make close to 150 Richmond gingerbread men before the Grand Final. Beeton’s Bakery’s Debbie Beeton said as soon as their bakery posted a photo of the gingerbread men on Facebook, it went “crazy.” “People were coming in at quarter past six in the morning of the game asking for 20, 30 gingerbread men,” she said, adding it was a sell-out. “People were ringing and ordering. Some were requesting them and some were actually coming in and buying out the stock. We must have had about four hours’ sleep between us all in 48.” She said her son Mathew made the gingerbread men, while she made the fondant and jerseys. “It took a little longer. I even had the little Jeep logo and numbers.” Ms Beeton said she was particularly surprised when a relation of Richmond’s Dustin Martin’s grandmother walked into the store. “She sent a photo to his grandmother of the number four gingerbread man. I was so excited that he was going to get a picture of it.” Ms Beeton said the bakery’s cream sponges and lemon cupcakes with black fondant and yellow stripes on top were also a hit. “We did a cream sponge with the shirts on as well. They sold out. As soon as it was going in the fridge people were saying ‘How many can I have?’ “As soon we put six out they would sell

Sparkling debut for all at the ball By Brendan Rees It was a dazzling affair for 11 couples of Cranbourne Marnebek School who made their debut at the school’s sixth debutante ball, on Friday 8 September. Debutantes from Year 10 and 11 came together at Amberlee Receptions in Cranbourne and were presented to principal Kathy Weston and Australian music legend Molly Meldrum. Event organiser and staff member Nicole Dinsdale said the evening was a success and the students were “amazing”. “Molly was awesome. He is a friend of our PE teacher Russell

Greene. It was not hard to get him on board and he was very excited to be asked and did a wonderful job of being presented to and then handing out certificates to all students who participated in the event,” she said. Ms Dinsdale said the students practised their dancing skills for nine weeks before the deb ball. “They danced to the Debutante Walt, Cha Cha and a Social Jive. Sam Baker, who is a leading teacher at Marnebek, was the dance teacher and did a great job. The students remembered all the dances, and all the family members who attended were so proud of the students,” she said. “The students were very excited as were the family members.”

Cranbourne may soon be home to a 1000-seat convention centre. The Cranbourne Turf Club has earmarked the site of its old outdoor betting ring for the ambitious $7 million project, which it hopes will be built by early 2019. Chief executive Neil Bainbridge said the development had been on the cards for a couple of years and was a critical part of the club’s master plan for the Grant Street racing and entertainment precinct. He also said it would fulfill a real need for such a facility in the City of Casey and beyond, complementing the soon-to-open Bunjil Place development in Narre Warren. A planning application will be lodged with the City of Casey within days.

“Based on our research there is a clear and present need for a significant function centre in Melbourne’s southeast,” Mr Bainbridge said. “It will allow schools and sporting clubs in the City of Casey to have their major events locally and it will also attract events from neighbouring areas as well.” It is proposed that the Cranbourne Convention Centre would have a capacity for 1000 people, but have five separate areas to cater for as few as 200. The centre would operate separately from the racing centre, with its own access from Grant Street, to allow private functions to be run on race days. “It will significantly enhance the gateway to racing centre and will ensure that function and events can occur irrespectively of whether racing is being

conducted across all of the codes,” Mr Bainbridge said. “The club already hosts 95 non-race day events. A lot of our feedback demonstrates a clear need to cater for 500 to 700, up to 1000 people. “It will be a significant attraction to Cranbourne and the City of Casey, creating a large number of jobs.” Mr Bainbridge said the project would be a major focus for the club in 2018. “By time a tender process is run, construction could start in the first half of 2018, with probably a nine to 12-month construction period, to be opened in the first quarter of 2019.” It is also believed the government is close to announcing the development of a 300-room hotel within the Grant Street precinct and the old pool site has also been earmarked for a cinema complex.

Three-car collision

By Brendan Rees

A man, aged in his thirties, was taken to The Alfred hospital in a stable condition following a threecar collision at the roundabout of Ballarto Road and Western Port Highway in Cranbourne West on Friday 22 September. Emergency services including seven fire trucks from Skye, Langwarrin, and Cranbourne were called to the collision about 6.45pm. Paramedics treated a Sunshine man for facial injuries before he was taken to The Alfred hospital. Police are investigating the circumstances behind the smash, but believe a car was travelling north on Western Port Highway when it collided with a car that was stationary at the roundabout. The impact caused the stationary car to be pushed into the path of another car that was turning right from Western Port Highway into Ballarto Road. All vehicles were extensively damaged and towed.

Construction of a foster care home in the Tulliallan estate in Cranbourne North has been completed, and marked with a celebratory handover on Tuesday 26 September. The house, built by leading Victorian builder, Boutique Homes, for OzChild, the largest provider of foster care in the south metropolitan region, will provide temporary care for some of the region’s most vulnerable children as part of OzChild’s Let’s Stay Together program. Welcoming its first residents in the coming month, the home features an open plan living, dining and kitchen, a separate home theatre and extended outdoor living space with a neutral and light colour palette, five bedrooms, and three bathrooms. OzChild supports over 6000 children, young people and families every year with services that extend to disability respite, education and therapeutic support. CEO of OzChild Lisa Griffiths said that as part of OzChild’s Let’s Stay Together program, the house would become home for siblings who might otherwise be separated. “It has been a wonderful commitment by Boutique Homes, their staff and their suppliers to build this house so we can support a sibling group who would otherwise have to be split up,” Ms Griffiths said. “OzChild moves heaven and earth to try to keep siblings together and this purpose-built house will enable us to do just that. It is a place our sibling group will be able to call home. We truly appreciate the effort and care all the tradespeople have put in to build this amazing house; it is just as beautiful as a display home.” The specially modified version of Boutique Homes’ 32 square ‘Riviera’

Managing director of ABN Group Victoria Aidan Hooper hands the keys to OzChild CEO Lisa Griffiths. 173380 home is the first of its kind that was designed and built for OzChild by Boutique Homes. Managing director of ABN Group Victoria, Aidan Hooper, said they were extremely proud to have completed the very special home for OzChild. “Our team, valued supplier partners and trades have all worked together to raise funds and deliver a quality new home for this important purpose,” he said. “We know it’s important siblings remain together, especially when children and young people are experiencing a difficult time in their lives, so we hope this newly completed home with nearby parkland, walking and bike trails, will provide a welcoming home for siblings and family groups.”

A 29-year-old Berwick man allegedly blew .056 on the morning of Saturday 30 September after Prahran Highway Patrol officers set up a booze bus site on Toorak Road in Toorak. The man received a fine for drink driving. A 24-year-old Cranbourne North man was also caught in the drink driving blitz, returning an alleged reading of .123. The man’s vehicle was also impounded at a cost of $896.10 and his licence suspended for 12 months. Prahran Highway Patrol Senior Constable James Smith said he was appalled by the lack of judgement and concern shown for fellow road users. “Drivers with readings this high are barely capable of stringing a sentence together, let alone travelling at speeds of 100km/h on one of our major freeways,” he said. “It’s irresponsible and poses a danger not only to themselves but other motorists, pedestrians and innocent bystanders.” The booze bus formed part of Operation Scoreboard, which finished on Sunday 1 October, was a state-wide focus targeting speed, driver distraction, seatbelt non-compliance, fatigue and drink and drug driving in an effort to reduce road trauma. Prahran Highway Patrol Senior Constable Therese Szulik said nabbing one in 50 drink drivers in less than two hours were appalling. “Operation Scoreboard is widely publicised and we will be saturating the streets this weekend in an effort to remove dangerous drivers from Victorian roads,” she said.

Socially speaking On Wednesday 27 September the Cranbourne-Berwick News Facebook Page shared a story of police investigating a firearms incident which occurred in Cranbourne North on Tuesday 26 September. Officers were called to an address in Josephine Avenue about 11.10pm, after reports that shots had been fired into a premises. Fortunately no-one was injured during the incident. A ballistics expert will examine the damage to the home. The story brought forward some strong opinions from readers and here is how they reacted online. Allan Harper: It’s not called crimebourne for nothing. Fran Tomkins: Chopper buzzing around last

night just after 11pm again . Julie A. Sonogan: Another not far from home. Lorraine Beggs Walker: Aaah, that explains the helicopter . Terry Russell Karen Wood : There went the neighbourhood. Abbey Chisholm: Valerie Gaillard, near your place. Von Hoover: What’s with all the references to god? Which god? Thor? Woden? Artemis? It is totally unnecessary. If god can control the casualties, couldn’t he have just controlled the shooting to begin with? Kira-Lee Bridle Scott: I am tipping this is what the chopper was out for. Damian Chapman: Thank God?

Casey Highway Patrol had a busy 30-minute period on Grand Final day, Saturday 30 September, with two drivers keen to attract their attention. At 7.50pm a 19-year-old Narre Warren man was caught driving at 114km/h in an 80km/h section of the Princes Highway. The P1 driver was intercepted and lost his licence for a month as well as receiving a penalty notice for $515 and losing four demerit points. At 8.20pm the same crew observed a Ford Territory fishtail on the Princes Highway at Hallam. The Ford was followed and then clocked at 74km/h in a 50km/h zone. Police intercepted the car and spoke to the 21-year-old P2 driver from Murrumbeena. He was given a preliminary breath test and was required to undergo an evidentiary test at the station. He returned an alleged reading of 0.066 and is expected to be summonsed for drink driving and numerous other traffic offences. The intercepts formed part of Operation Scoreboard, a state-wide focus on road user behaviour targeting speed, driver distraction, seatbelt noncompliance, fatigue and drink and drug driving in an effort to reduce road trauma.

Tourism plan launched Casey RACE Operations director Naomi Leuing during a recent talk with a women's multicultural group about child water Picture: CONTRIBUTED safety. 173006

Free water safety lessons By Brendan Rees As summer approaches, two of Casey’s aquatic centres are throwing their support behind a program to prevent drownings, offering free water safety lessons. Casey RACE and Casey ARC have been working with local community groups and schools to deliver free water safety sessions for the benefit of all pool and aquatic users. Sessions include pool hygiene practices, potential dangers in a swimming pool environment, general pool rules and a range of other subjects that people face when around water and at public swimming pools. These water safety demonstrations are been provided to numerous schools, kinders and community groups. YMCA Community Engagement co-ordinator Tori Norris said education was the key to safety around water. “We hope that by running these sessions, we can spread the water safety message and decrease the amount of incidents that happen at our pools,” she said. “We have a lot of different people visiting our pools, including children and people from many different cultures. These sessions also aim to help multi-cultural communities understand Australian water safety practices better. We want to limit the barriers for all in our community and allow them to be safer around water.” If you would like to know more about YMCA water safety demonstrations, email tori.norris@ ymca.org.au.

A bold plan will see Cardinia and Casey councils join forces to market the area as a leading Australian tourism destination. The draft Casey Cardinia Visitation Strategy 2017-’20, approved by the council at a recent meeting, reveals ambitious plans to grow tourism in the area. It cites local attractions Emerald Park Lake, Puffing Billy, Fountain Gate Shopping Centre, Cranbourne Gardens, Moonlit Sanctuary, The Old Cheese Factory, and Gumbuya Park and Bunjil Place - once underway works are complete - as places to visit. City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said tourism was critical for economic growth and generating jobs but also “parading both cities in terms of what we have to offer.” “From Cardinia’s perspective there are wineries and many other attractions from Casey’s perspective. “We’ve got the new Bunjil Place which will open in October and will bring international performances to the region for the very first time,” Cr Aziz said. “Cardinia is an economic partner of ours and we see ourselves as a region rather than two individual councils. Anything that brings more people and spending to the region is something that will be supported by both councils.” “This initiative has been in the making for a whole decade ever since I’ve been on council and it’s an exciting prospect for the whole region,” he said. Cardinia councillor Michael Schilling said all too often people were driving through the shire to reach other tourism destinations such as Gippsland. “And we don’t want Cardinia to be the place people stop for a bite to eat. We want them to come, stay and

Casey's new home of entertainment, Bunjil Place, will open to the Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS public next month. 172365 enjoy,” Cr Schilling said. “Cardinia is a wonderful place, with a number of wonderful attributes that we want to show off.” The council said it wanted to make the most of the “distinct advantage” the region’s close proximity to other tourist destinations such as the Yarra Valley, Gippsland and Mornington Peninsula brought. Cardinia Shire believes Casey Cardinia too could become a tourism hotspot if the councils joined forces. “From a tourism perspective, the inclusion of the City of Casey is very important, as it contains a large number of the region’s significant activities and attractions,” its draft strategy states. “(The City of Casey’s) attributes both complement and enrich the traditionally more rural-based Cardinia Shire. Their combined products and experiences offer particular appeal to families and considerable potential for a strong visitor market.” Both Cardinia and Casey councils will contribute $50,000 for a tourism

budget for the 2017-’18 financial year to get the strategy up and running. Cardinia Shire said the draft Casey Cardinia Visitation Strategy provided “a strong plan to help strengthen the region’s tourism industry and provide opportunities for tourism operators and affiliated businesses”. Similar to other significant tourism destinations across Australia, the document outlines a detailed threeyear marketing action plan that will be led by industry in the form of an independent regional board. This board will include members from the Casey Cardinia Tourism Advisory Committee (CCTAC) and Casey Cardinia Libraries’ CEO Chris Buckingham, who was also the former CEO of Destination Melbourne, will also play a major role. There has been “general community support” for the tourism plan but Cardinia Shire did receive three submissions highlighting concerns during public consultation earlier in the year. Some community members were worried there were inadequate ser-

vices and infrastructure to cater for increased visitor numbers in the townships of the Dandenong Ranges; that the creation of a new regional tourism brand would weaken the established Dandenong Ranges tourism brand; that certain hills villages wished to align themselves more with Yarra Ranges campaigns instead of Casey Cardinia region campaigns; and that money earmarked for the creation of a regional tourism brand should instead be given to the Eastern Dandenong Ranges Association. Cardinia Shire said CCTAC members individually reviewed the community feedback and concluded “that it offered a micro-view of the region”. “Further, members felt that the Eastern Dandenong Ranges area does not drive tourism, as seems to be the sentiment of the submissions. Rather, there are several main attractions throughout the region.“ Examples cited included developments at Gumbuya Park and Bunjil Place, expansions at the Cranbourne and Pakenham racecourses and the Cranbourne Gardens,” its response to community feedback reads. Instead, the CCTAC offered its own recommendations to improve the strategy. It outlined needs for a co-ordinated regional calendar of events, themed trails and product packages as well as additional cafes, retail, attractions and activities in Cardinia’s hills villages and arts communities. The committee’s recommendations also highlight the importance of strengthened relationships with relevant government and tourism bodies, and improved communications with neighbouring regional tourism organisations for possible collaborations.

Fireman fun a drawcard By Brendan Rees A dream of becoming Fireman Sam for a day came true for many youngsters at a fun Emergency Services day at Banjo Paterson Park, Lynbrook, on Saturday 16 September. Kids jumped at the opportunity to hold a fire hose and squirt some water during the expo, presented by Hampton Park Fire Brigade. Families enjoyed a day out with a variety of activities including a CFA rescue display, police brawler van and highway patrol vehicles, Search and Rescue Dogs Australia displays, CFA smoke house, CFA mobile education unit Australian Volunteer Coast Guard, Life Saving Victoria, SES, and Neighbourhood Watch. Hampton Park CFA firefighter and community safety officer Hellie Aitken said the

event was important for the community to support and interact with emergency service members, and learn about safety and how to prepare for extreme situations. “It just shows them (children) not to be scared if you’re coming up to a police officer when they’ve got all their gear on. It gives them an idea of what emergency services are out there and what services the kids may come across from time to time,” she said. “It’s an all-round good community thing to show the parents and the kids what’s available and what we do.” Ms Aitken said Dandenong Rescue demonstrated a car rescue by “cutting up” the car with the jaws-of-life which everyone “loved.” “We had CPR going, so we had lots of kids doing a bit of

CPR and seeing what that’s like.” Ms Aitken said the smoke house was an opportunity for children to perform a fire drill whereby they got down low on the floor of a building and crawled through artificial smoke: “It’s giving them an idea of what it might be like and a lot of the children learn to get down low and go, go, go from kindergarten and school. So it’s good for them to put that into practice.” “Hampton Park had hoses out, and kids were having a go at that with the help of one of our firefighters, of course, just to see the pressure that the hose puts out.” She said there were prize give-aways, a barbecue, and an appearance by Captain Koal adding, “We were pretty lucky with the weather.

She said the Bark for Life event celebrated the ’pawsitive’ role dogs played in supporting those with cancer, while raising vital funds for cancer research, prevention, and support services. “Most people have been affected by cancer in one way or another - be it themselves or close family and friends, so that makes this an incredibly worthwhile fund-raising initiative.

“As we dog lovers are always looking for dog inclusive events and ways to get out and about with our best buddies, this makes it a pawfect event in our books.” At the end of the walk the Tales of Fluff team were treated to a puppachinno courtesy of Miss Drew’s Bakery and Dog Cafe in Tyabb. The Bark for Life event will be held on Sunday 29 October from 10am at Jells Park South (Ferntree Gully Road, Wheelers Hill). “We’d love for more Casey dogs and their humans to join us“ said Ms Maritn.

A Botanic Ridge business owner led a ‘pawfect’ fund-raiser walk with a group of Casey residents and their beloved pooches to fight cancer, leaving many tails wagging with excitement. Forty-five people brought their four-legged friends to join in a five-kilometre walk in Tyabb on Sunday 10 September, raising $820 for the Cancer Council of Victoria. Event organiser and owner of Puppy Tales Photography in Botanic Ridge, Kerry Martin, said the Tales of Fluff team was thrilled with the funds raised, which were well beyond their expectations. “We were blessed with incredible support from the dog loving community and small local businesses, and also with great weather. “This fund-raiser makes our Tales of Fluff team one of the highest fund-raisers for the upcoming Bark for Life event, and has us well on our way to achieving our fund-raising target. Another social event is planned for October and we welcome any dog lovers to join the ’Tales of Fluff’ team for Bark for Life.” Ms Martin said money from the walk was raised from participation fees, a raffle kindly donated by Best Friends, Morn-

Inner Italians come out By Brendan Rees Pinocchio and Leonardo da Vinci were among some Italian icons who roamed the corridors of Tooradin Primary School on Friday 15 September, where they even ate pasta made by students. Prep to Grade 6 students dressed in colours or anything Italian-related to celebrate Italian Day. Tooradin Primary School Italian teacher, Leanne Fechner said the day was successful - their first, but by no means last Italian Day. She said there was a sea of Italian colours across the school: “If the kids didn’t have any costumes or colours they wore their school uniform because we’re red, white and green.” “They loved it. I’ve never seen any-

thing like it before,” Ms Fechner said. “Kids were stopping me in the corridor just saying how great the activities were and the food.” With a year to plan the day, Ms Fechner said some of the activities consisted of drawing upside-down on paper stuck underneath tables Michelangelo style, making pasta collages, pasta necklaces and bocce, building the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and Italian badge making. “We had multi-aged groups rotating among a variety of wonderful activities.” “We also had a picture of the Mona Lisa and I cut her face out and I put the kids’ photos behind it and they made a frame out of pasta for the photos.”

“The Grade 3-6 kids have a cooking class every week for an hour an half. For the last three weeks they’ve been cooking the pasta and drying it,” she said. Ms Fechner said the students cooked the pasta with sauce for lunch, but not forgotten was 44 litres of gelato that was served for dessert. “Finally to end a magnificent day the students enjoyed a one-hour show by the performers from La Comicia Variety Productions called I Due Carabinieri - The Two Policeman.” “The comedy show is about to policeman looking for the stolen Vesper as they travel around Italy trying to find it,” she said, adding: “That was hilarious.”

As Australia’s energy system transitions, the Australian Government is making energy more affordable. We’ve already secured agreements from retailers to offer consumers a better deal, and some households could save up to $1,500 per year on their power bills. We’re also ensuring there is enough gas for Australians before it’s shipped offshore. To find out more search ‘POWERING FORWARD’. It’s actions like this today that are powering a more affordable energy future.

Those who want to add some speed to their school holiday fun can head to the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit Go Kart track and take on the challenge to ‘Slam-Dunk Daniella’s Go Kart Record’ in the new French Sodi RT8 Evo2 go karts which have just arrived from Europe. So who is the fleet-footed Daniella? She’s the Phillip Island Karting Queen and in years of go karting at the Island, it is none other than Daniella Daniels, the 23-year-old pre-school teacher from Narre Warren North who heads the record books for hot lap times in the Sodi karts. She managed a best lap time of 47.419 seconds on the 750 metre Phillip Island Go Kart track which is a replica of the world famous Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. “I just love go karting, it’s a passion of mine. I grew up with older brothers and our life was all about cars and bikes and going fast. “I’ve never done driver training, I just get out there and go,” Daniella said. “The new go karts are super special and as the holidays go on, they’ll get run it and they’ll pick up even more pace. It’s a ton of fun and I can’t wait to get back on track.” Phillip Island Go Karts is open every day of the school holidays, so visitors have until 8 October to make their mark, and there are daily prizes to be won. Each day the fastest competitor will win two 10-minute go kart sessions. Those who set the fastest time of the two week school holidays and beat Daniella’s 47.419s mark and bolt to the top of the podium will be graced with the title of Phillip Island’s Go Kart King or Queen and win two 10 minute sessions for themselves and two mates. With state-of-the-art seats and pedals fitted, the go karts can be custom fit for drivers, but competitors have to be 12 and over 140cm in height to drive. Go karting at Phillip Island is super fun for adrenalin junkies through to novices. Drivers can race the clock or one another and push out a series of hot laps in their quest to set the day’s fastest lap. Lap time print outs are provided for each racer. Times can even be posted to a driver’s own Facebook site, allowing any top gun to enjoy maximum bragging rights. The go kart track is open from 9.30am until 5pm every day of the holidays. No bookings required. Go kart sessions are run in 10 minute blocks, starting at $35 for a 10-minute session, $60 for two 10-minute sessions and $80 for three 10-minute sessions. DURING the mid to late 1990s, Frank Facey First National Real Estate expanded and grew from the original office in Dandenong (C1917), to a network of offices in Narre Warren, Mulgrave, Berwick, Endeavour Hills and Glen Waverly. At the same time, Cremin Real Estate was building an impressive following in the Pakenham area. Prior to the 1970s, Pakenham was a quiet, rural district enjoyed mostly by the Gippsland farming fraternity but as the South-Eastern corridor became more and more popular for families and professionals as a great place to live and work, a boom in industry followed. Jack Cremin was a well-known and respected figure in the Pakenham region. Back in 1978 he purchased Nobelius and Co and in 1980 they acquired CottonStapleton Real Estate in Pakenham and amalgamated the two, which became Cremin Real Estate in 1984. By 2002 Jack Cremin merged with Frank Facey First National to become Cremin Frank Facey First National. This merger was a perfect match and an important decision for the future success of the company. Two of the most experienced and popular real estate agencies combined their talents and joined forces to ensure that all bases were covered in providing the optimum real estate service for the region. Now, Frank Facey First National Real Estate had the South East covered from Dandenong right out to Pakenham. Exciting times were to follow. In 2011 the business became First

The Pakenham office of First National Neilson Partners, in Main Street Pakenham, has gone from strength to strength since the Cremin/Facey merger and the company’s continued commitment to the area is absolute. The one-man business Frank Facey started in 1917 in Dandenong is now First National Real Estate Neilson Partners, with strategically positioned offices throughout Casey and Cardinia. Next month we follow more of the significant events which have combined to shape the history of this remarkable company. ●

National Real Estate Neilson Partners under the one entity of Facey Pty Ltd. Todd McKenna and Nyall Greene (directors and partners in First National Neilson Partners), have run the Pakenham office since those early days and have been at the forefront of the company’s success and growth throughout the Pakenham region. With the increased interest in Cardinia Shire, roads, and transport were upgraded and the freeway extended. Schools and medical facilities were introduced to support the ever-increasing population and the area is now one of the fastest growing shires in the country.

Board boost for fund-raiser Two new directors have been welcomed on to the Casey Cardinia Foundation board as the local philanthropic group prepares for its biggest fundraiser for the year next Friday night. Khans Hospitality Services operations manager John Barbaressoss and Aligned Leisure Cardinia manager Simon Bryson both know about hosting big events. In his role at Khans, Mr Barbaressoss has overseen many major events, particularly at the Cardinia Cultural Centre, which again hosts the Foundation’s annual charity dinner on 13 October. And Mr Bryson is coming off a huge weekend. He has a match day role with Richmond Football Club, which is connected to Aligned Leisure, and had his hands full as the Tigers broke a 37-year drought to take the AFL premiership on Saturday 30 September. Mr Bryson looks after match day activations for the Tigers and was on deck at the MCG on Saturday. “It has been very busy, but also very rewarding,” he said. “I just loved every part of seeing all the fans at Punt Road on Sunday,” he told the Gazette on Monday afternoon, looking to head back out for the club’s best and fairest count that night. Mr Bryson has worked in the leisure industry for 15 years, having started as a cleaner at 16 and worked his way through to being Cardinia Leisure manager. He had worked in the western suburbs and inner Melbourne before heading out to Cardinia to join Aligned Leisure, where he quickly developed a connection with the community. “I have been fortunate in my career and really taken to the community in the relatively short time I have been out here and feel I want to give something

The Casey Cardinia Foundation board is looking forward to a big night at the annual charity dinner on Friday 13 October at the Cardinia Cultural Centre. Board members are, from left, Kate Lempriere, John Barbaressoss, Norm Davidson, Garry McQuillan, vice-chairman Adam Sadizqai, chairman Paul Thomas, Brett Owen, Simon Bryson, Mike Tyler and Amanda Stapledon. back,” he said. Mr Barbaressoss has lived in the Casey area his whole life and worked predominantly in the Cardinia Casey region. His father, John senior, migrated to Australia from Greece in 1968 and settled in Hampton Park in the early 1970s.

He became actively involved in the Casey community, particularly in the multicultural arena, volunteering many hours. That largely inspired Mr Barbaressoss’ tilt at the Foundation board. “My father played a big part in that,” he said. He also brings a lot of event and

hospitality knowledge to the position, which will fill the void left by Khans principal Adam Sadiqzai when he retires from the board next year. The annual charity ball is the Foundation’s biggest fundraising event for the year. This year 13-piece music sensation Big and Horny will provide the entertainment.

All money raised is distributed to local groups and initiatives, some of which will be highlighted on the night. Tickets are $135 a head or $1350 for a table of 10. To book or make an inquiry phone 0439 905 533 or email admin@caseycardiniafoundation.org.

Mark Cooper will be aiming to lead the Demons to consecutive Premier titles this season.

The ecstasy and despair of the stunning conclusion to last season’s WGCA Premier grand final. 166213

Pictures: ROB CAREW

Ready for Premier action By Russell Bennett West Gippsland Cricket Association Premier division 2017/18 - season preview Just when will the balance of power in the West Gippsland Cricket Association’s top tier shift? Logic says it has to eventually, but with the new Premier season beginning this weekend Kooweerup, Pakenham and Cardinia again loom as real powerhouses alongside the star-studded Tooradin. Last season the gap from the fourth and last finals position to those stuck on the outside looking in - from fifth to eighth - ballooned. The Bulls finished in fourth, 32 competition points clear of Upper Beaconsfield in fifth and Merinda Park in sixth. A super-competitive Clyde is set to push last year’s finalists right from the outset this

year with a particularly strong all-round lineup only improved from their off-season acquisitions. A Premier finals berth in year one looks well within reach. The Cougars could be a power for years to come, but beyond them the likes of Upper Beaconsfield, Merinda Park and Emerald could struggle. Though all three have top-end talent - particularly the Maroons - once again they likely won’t have enough to consistently trouble the powerhouses. A look around the division shows plenty to be excited about for fans. Te Ahu Davis (Cardinia) and Mitch Davey (Kooweerup) will be two of the competition’s genuine tearaways while all-rounder Troy McDermott will only bolster an already imposing Pakenham line-up even further.

But the list of outs - particularly at Merinda Park and Emerald - could prove telling. Cobras mainstays and former leaders Daniel Diwell, Simon Parrott and Dylan Cuthbertson have all departed along with key wicket taker Leigh Paterson. Former Bombers star AJ Walker has also left the competition, while super talented allrounder Geordie Scott has returned to Gembrook in Sub-District. That won’t make their former sides’ tasks any easier, but consistently strong sides boast just that - consistency throughout their line-ups. New stars have to emerge now and shoulder more of the responsibility. Demons captain-coach Mark Cooper had a season in 2016/17 that most local cricketers could only dream of and he’ll again look to lead his men to the ultimate success

- once again surrounded by a bevy of class options with both bat and ball. Not surprisingly, Pakenham - led by the likes of Dom Paynter and Rob Elston - is no different and a third grand final match-up in as many seasons between the two sides would surprise absolutely no one. Tooradin should never be underestimated and under a new club coach - Gulls favourite son Ricky Holland - and co-captains Aaron Avery and Cal O’Hare, they’ll be out to breathe fire from the outset. They know they have to stand up against last year’s other top four sides. Their side definitely has the talent, and the upside is there, but they’ve got to put it together when it counts most. It’s come around quick, but now that we’re just days away, we can’t wait for this new season to start!

New era for Tigers - a powerhouse plan By Nick Creely There is genuine excitement at Perc Allison Oval ahead of the 2017/18 cricket season as Beaconsfield look to continue their emergence as a powerhouse of the DDCA. Club superstar Matt Golding - a professional cricket in the Minor Counties for Devon in the UK - has been appointed captain/coach, with club legend Dylan Freitag leaving the club to live in Brisbane for work. It’s only the start of a new era for a club that is building its senior and junior talent in the southeast. “It’s pretty cool thing to be able to do (coaching), especially being only 23 - I’ve got a bit of inexperience, but I hope to learn a lot about my cricket and help people along the way,” he said. The 23-year-old is entering his third season at the Tigers, and has scored 981 runs and taken 45 wickets in his first two years at the club, and brings home a wave of momentum after a stellar

season with Bovey Tracey in the Devon Cricket League’s Premier Division. “We actually won the league - I brought a few blokes from my club over here to play and hopefully that winning tradition can be brought here,” he explained. Golding has experienced the conditions that both Australia and the UK have to offer, and explains the differences and mindset in being successful anywhere. “Where I’m from, and especially at Devon, they are known as ‘slow and low pitches’, and very front foot based and bowlers bowl really full and the ball swings around a bit - here is a lot stronger on the back foot, but at the end of the day it’s a game of cricket and if you respect the good ones and put away the bad ones you will find success,” he said. After being bundled out of the Turf 2 premiership race last year with Beaconsfield against eventual premiers St Mary’s in a semi-final,

Golding hopes his fresh outlook on the game and the improvement of himself as a player will bring the ultimate success. “Everyone that plays cricket wants to win every game, but personally I want to make sure everyone is playing and enjoying themselves - obviously everyone wants to win the flag, there’s no point playing if you don’t want to, but my mentality is making sure everyone enjoys themselves, and at the end of the day, I believe that brings success. “Last year I was pretty consistent but never really had any big scores - I got 30 about six or seven times after Christmas which was pretty frustrating, so I’ve worked on that and I was lucky to put up a few decent scores,” he said “I’m hungry to score runs because I get frustrated with myself when I’m below my standards.” The Tigers have been busy over the off-season recruiting, and after losing Freitag, Michael

Mitchell and Shaun Van Dam, had to go to work to bring in some fresh talent. Fellow Bovey Tracey imports Josh Mailing a star opening bat - and Will Christophers will add quality to the Tigers’ batting group, while Ruwantha Fernandopulle (Donvale), Michael Dunstan (Narre North) and Aloka Pathiranalage (Coomoora) have also joined the club. Beaconsfield kicks off it’s 2017/18 season with an away game against Coomora on Saturday 7 October.

News tsunami hits clubs By Russell Bennett, David Nagel and Nick Creely Though the football season is done and dusted for 2017, that hasn’t stopped a massive wave of news towering down over fans throughout the South East. AFL South East will pursue a full divisional model combining the MPNFL’s Peninsula and Nepean clubs in 2018, with the South East Football Netball League to join them from 2019. Divisions 1 and 2 will be implemented next season, made up of a mixture of Nepean and Peninsula clubs while the SEFNL competition will forge ahead with an eight-team competition in 2018 before joining the promotion-relegation system the following year. A fourth division is also on the cards for 2020 to help with the introduction of newly-established or transferred clubs. The SEFNL’s ninth club, Hampton Park, looks destined to find a new home after the Southern Football Netball League accepted its request to join in 2018. SFL chief executive David Cannizzo informed Redbacks president Mick O’Brien of the news last week, with the SFL accepting the club into Division 3 of its promotion-relegation structure. The Redbacks were keen to begin their SFL journey in Division 2 but have accepted the SFL’s decision. The next step in the process was to formally lodge a transfer request with AFL South East, the governing body of the South East Football Netball League - the Redbacks’ current home. O’Brien last week told the Gazette that his club finally had a clear vision for the future. “We’re pleased that we’ve been accepted by the Southern Football League and into a divisional structure that provides the club with the opportunity to be competitive - and ultimately successful again,” he said. “We would have preferred Division 2, but we

Allan Murray's Devon Meadows and Nick Marston's Sorrento will both be part of the full Picture: ROB CAREW divisional structure for 2018. 169599 accept the umpires’ decision and move forward.” Hampton Park will only be allowed to recruit a maximum of one player from Southern Football League clubs for next year, while the SFL’s acceptance is based on at least a five-year stay in the competition. Meanwhile, the Redbacks are embarking on a senior coaching change after Dean Warren informed the Gazette that he and his staff had part-

ed ways with the club. The former Redbacks coach said the staff and the club had parted ways last Sunday. O’Brien said the club is expected to make an announcement shortly, but wouldn’t be drawn on the nature of it. In other coaching news, Pakenham favourite sons Dean Blake and Michael ‘Jock’ Holland have joined forces at Nar Nar Goon in the West

Gippsland Football Netball Competition. Blake will take the senior coaching helm for the next two seasons with Holland - a former Pakenham premiership and SEFNL interleague icon - assisting him. Exciting youngsters Trent Armour and Tyler Payroli recently finished first and second in the Goon’s senior best and fairest award, the Webster-Collins Medal. At Pakenham, co-captain Chris Cardona won the senior award from runner-up Liam Tyrrell. Beaconsfield also held its senior presentation night recently with champion ruckman Scott Meyer narrowly pipped from taking out his fifth straight senior best and fairest from Jake Bowd and Lachlan Modica. Young gun Tylah Stokoe who played both seniors finals - won the reserves best and fairest, with Eddie Wilson runner-up. Under 19s co-captain Dan Coinu took out that best and fairest from joint runners-up Peter Alier and Luke Bettio, while Samantha Johnson followed up her league best and fairest with the ladies’ club best and fairest in a premiership year. Long-serving club secretary Debbie McManus was inducted as a life Beaconsfield life member after her tireless service over the past 17 years in both senior and junior club positions. At VFL level, discarded former Melbourne captain Jack Trengove claimed the 2017 Gardner Clark Medal as the Casey Demons’ best and fairest at last Thursday’s club awards. Trengove, 26, was delisted by Melbourne after 86 AFL games, but had an outstanding season at VFL level with Casey, averaging 23 disposals across the year. AFL-bound forward Bailey Fritsch finished second, while Ben Kennedy (also delisted by Melbourne), Declan Keilty and Corey Maynard rounded out the top-five. Twins - and Beaconsfield products - Damien and Daniel Johnston remarkably tied for the Casey development squad’s best and fairest in their premiership-winning campaign.

By Nick Creely Highly credentialed Melbourne assistant coach Jade Rawlings will coach the Casey Demons in 2018 after being appointed last week. The 40-year-old, who was a caretaker coach for Richmond in 2009, has been an assistant at Melbourne since 2012, looking after the defensive group. Rawlings has previously coached at Coburg in the VFL when they were aligned with Richmond. Justin Plapp - the man who took Casey to the 2016 VFL grand final - will now move into a full time coaching role at Melbourne. General Manager of Football Operations at Melbourne, Josh Mahoney, told melbournefc. com.au that the appointment of Rawlings will bring a wealth of experience to the VFL program. “We are very fortunate to have someone of Jade’s experience to be appointed to the position of VFL Senior Coach of the Casey Demons for next year,” he said. “The VFL program is a critical part of the development of our players and to have Jade with his experience and knowledge leading the team of coaches is a fantastic appointment for us. “Jade has formed an important part of our AFL coaching structure for a number of years, particularly in our defensive area and this is a great opportunity to add a broader skill set to his coaching career and running

a full football program. “Jade will also become an important spokesperson for our football program in the region as we look to build a genuine pathway for boys and girls from a young age through to VFL and VFLW level.” Rawlings himself said he is extremely excited by the opportunity to once again coach his own side. “Since my time coaching Coburg in the VFL 10 years ago, I have always thought I would like to go back to coaching my own team,” he said. “I can’t thank the club enough for providing me with this opportunity. The Melbourne Football Club and the Casey Demons have built a

strong relationship which I look forward to further contributing to in the future. “Something I am passionate about is developing and teaching players to become the best they can, not only on the field but also in their personal lives.” Melbourne has also announced Peter Maynard as the new General Manager - Casey Football. “We are investing more resources into our activities at Casey Fields and the South East region with the recent appointment of Peter Maynard to the role of General Manager Casey Football, where he will oversee the VFL, VFLW and Next Generation Academy programs,” Mahoney said.

Big dance for lunch and bowls to boot HAMPTON PARK BOWLS More than 25 people attended the AFL Grand Final lunch at the club enjoying a meal followed by 10 ends of bowls. All but four went home and they stayed to watch the Tigers play the game of their lives - a team of players, who played as a team. The Upwey-Tecoma bowls club came to Hampton Park to play the final match before pennant season starts. The top sides for both clubs were in Division 1 last year, but will

be playing Division 2 this season. Both sides enjoyed the game with neither giving any ground. The competition was fierce with many great ends played by both sides. DIVISION 2 Val, Trevor, Sean and skip John were well in front early, and held off a late charge from their opponents while Mat, Ellen, Neville and skip Warwick played it tight to just finish in front. Stan, Ken, Mark and skip Larry had a big chase ahead of them

at the halfway point, but came back strongly to miss by one shot. Geoff, Christine, Steve and skip Chris bolted from the very first end to finish with a big win. DIVISION 4 Lou, Bill, Craig and skip Gavin were pretty even all day while Val S, Dave, Vince and skip Ian played their best bowls in the second half. David, Rob, Toni and skip Denise started well, but slowed at the end to still finish in front. After being down

early, Garry, Stuart, Brian and skip Ray fought their way back to be in the lead by one shot at the end. The club championship draws are up and ready to be played. The ‘Try Bowls’ day will be at Hampton Park on Sunday 8 and 15 October, from 10am to 2pm on both days. Everyone is welcome. Pink Ribbon Day is the club’s fund-raiser for breast cancer and is on Thursday, 12 October - a truly worthy cause to support.

Bowls open with a bang NARRE WARREN BOWLS The bowls season is just beginning, and already Narre Warren bowlers are coming to the fore. On the Pennant front, Narre Warren started the season quite well with both Division 2 and Division 1 (six a side) winning, with Division 3, however, having a loss. Recently Wilma Stevenson regained her Casey District Ladies Over-60s singles title, while Jim and Pauline Kempf won the Casey District Novice singles. Last Sunday Pauline went one step further to win the Peninsula Casey Region title. Playing at Cranbourne RSL, she converted a strong start to a convincing 21-4 win over her Rosebud opponent. Beside her, Jim fought hard and just went down 17-21. Pauline now goes on to play for state honours.

Dundee Osprey retires gracefully after life spent chasing By Mick Floyd Dundee Osprey, one of the most consistent - and brilliant - chasers to grace Sandown Park this decade, has been retired. The 35kg son of Fabregas departs the track with $538,600 in prize money next to his name after winning a number of greyhound feature events, including the Group 1 Topgun, HarrisonDawson and Sale Cup. “It’s been a really good ride with him for sure,” said his trainer Geoff Scott-Smith. “He’s my best mate. We kind of feed off each other. I’d take him to the track and it was like he was trying to win for me.” The mutual affection and admiration between the greyhound and his trainer is clear as Dundee Osprey bounces around a paddock on ScottSmith’s Pakenham South property. As Dundee Opsprey - ‘Uno’ as he’s known at home - races over to his owner, Scott-Smith gets emotional as he describes what his champion means to him. “I don’t really have a need for the money, I’m retired now and own my place. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice but it’s not what I do it for. It (training greyhounds) gives you a purpose, a reason to get out of bed each morning. Getting a dog into tip top condition to be the best they can be is very satisfying.” Dundee Osprey’s racing career began in unconventional fashion. His first race was in a coursing event at Lang Lang as an 18-month-old pup where he reached the semi-final of the Derby. Two months later he won on his race track debut in a heat of the VicBred maiden at Warrnambool, but despite the early success he had given no indication of the success that lay ahead. “The whole litter chased straight away. Early on you knew he was a good chaser but at that stage you never thought he’d be a world beater,” ScottSmith said. “The first few trials at Warragul and Geelong were just so-so. He had a couple of niggles early on, he broke a fibula and had a couple of months off, then he got crook and we had to late scratch him at Sandown one night. But once we got all of that fixed up and put him over 500m, after a few trials he was flying.” After a couple of impressive wins at Cranbourne, Dundee Osprey made headlines at his 14th start when he blitzed his rivals to win in a stunning 29.109 at Sandown Park, a time that even amazed the man who knew him best. “I took him there on a Saturday morning for his first 500m run and he ran 29.50,” Scott-Smith said.

Newly retired champion greyhound Dundee Osprey with his Pakenham South-based trainer, Geoff Scott-Smith. Picture: COURTESY OF SANDOWN GREYHOUNDS “I thought that’s pretty good, his run home time was flying. But when he ran the 29.11, I saw the clock and thought geez that can’t be right, but obviously it was. “He seemed to take a shining to Sandown.” Dundee Osprey contested an amazing 18 group finals throughout his decorated career, with 12 of them being at Sandown Park. He would finish with an 11-7-4 record from 29 starts at Sandown Park, including multiple wins over each distance. He won the group 1 Harrison-Dawson (515 metres), the listed Cup Night Middle Distance

(595m) and 2016 Speed Star (515m). He also finished second in the Group 1 Sandown Cup (715m), group 2 McKenna Memorial (595m) and group 3 Sir John Dillon Memorial (595m) - beaten a total of 3.5 lengths in those finals winning $277,880 at Sandown Park alone. However, his biggest win according to his trainer was at the Meadows when he defeated a star-studded line up in the 2016 Topgun. On a cold and wet night, Dundee Osprey defied the horrendous conditions - and box 8 - to register a career-defining victory. “Most of his big wins came in bad

conditions - rain, cold, wet - he seemed to thrive in those conditions and that was one of those nights,” Scott-Smith added. “He was feeling really good, he was jumping out of his skin. I gave him a big chance in the race, I thought if he could get around that corner in third spot and get a sit on them, even if he was five or six lengths off them he could run them down and that’s exactly what happened. You couldn’t write the script any better. “He gave those speedsters about a six-length start and beat them by three. You just don’t get many dogs that do

that sort of thing, that come from that far behind to win a big race against quality dogs.” The win was typical of his racing style and endeared him to greyhound fans wherever he raced, making him not only one of the sport’s best chasers, but one of the most popular. “It makes you really proud when people say how much they enjoy seeing him race. He was such a competitor, just loved being at the track and racing, I can’t remember a single race where he didn’t try his hardest. “I’ll never have another one like him.”
