Steeped in rich history, Lubra Bend is a magnificent country property with a resplendent garden that is filled with a range of beautiful and stunning flowers and incredible, poignant architecture. In a rare open garden event, visitors can catch a glimpse into the incredible sustainable landscape that has been owner Rosemary Simpson’s passion for the past 17 years. Visitors will be left astounded by the intricate and delicate flowers and architecture that combine to make the garden, which has won several awards, an esoteric experience. From the very first step onto the gravel driveway, visitors are treated to an imposing 30-tonne circular rock, which stands guard at the entrance. Beside it lies a pond covered in lilypads and other protruding plants which ripple and sway with the movement of the water from a cascading waterfall above. The ground-breaking dry garden design means the garden requires little to no water, and yet it is filled with the brilliance of camellias, gerberas and magnolias. It is however, 86-year-old Rosemary Simpson’s passion for her camellias and her garden that shine above it all. When asked about her favourite part of the garden, Ms Simpson simply said she enjoyed sitting by the top waterfall and listening to its delicate sound. “I like sitting near the cascade at the top pond, looking at the water and hearing it run; there’s a lot of frogs and beautiful little sounds, all of which are quite wonderful and humbling,” she said. Lubra Bend will be open from 11am-3pm on Thursday 5 October, with guided tours at 11am and 1pm. Entry is $20.

Each dividing segment of the garden is different but perfectly maintained and thoughtfully created to ensure a winding and flowing experience.

Open up all the secrets for display By Effie Caloutas The Secret Gardens of the Dandenong Ranges is providing a tour of some of the most beautiful and secret, privately owned gardens in the region. Across five days in October - 12 Thursday, 13 Friday, 14 Saturday, 20 Friday and 21 Saturday - daily coaches will leave from Kalorama each morning, with expert guides offering insight to a selection of privately owned gardens. During the tours, participants will experience delightful picnic lunches and sparkling canapes. Secret Gardens of the Dandenong Ranges tour guide, Eddie Wasbutzki, believes that having the secret gardens

enables visitors to build life-long friendships. “You get people from all walks of life come together and they all have one thing in common, and that’s their love of gardens,” he said. A not-for-profit community event, the concept sprouted through the dedicated work of the Dandenong Ranges Tourism Network. President of the Dandenong Ranges Association, Mary Wiking, believes the privately owned gardens will enhance tourism in the area. “Given that the population of Melbourne is exploding, not many people know about the Dandenong Ranges,” she said. “This gives tourists an opportunity to

see treasures of the Dandenong Ranges.” Ms Wiking believes the success of the previous garden shows it can enable the Secret Gardens of the Dandenong Ranges to become a brand for the future. “We have had a large number of visits from tourists in previous years,” she said. “With previous success, we are trying to build a brand that people are aware of for the future.” Tickets are limited (only 50 places each day), with single-day packages priced at $135, which includes transport, garden entry, meals and refreshments. Group bookings are available on 13 Friday October and 20 Friday October. For more details, visit www.secretgardensofthedandenongranges.com.au.

A feast of flowers is shown off By Derek Schlennstedt Upper Yarra Valley Garden Club Open Gardens Weekend is taking place again this year to show off the spectacular spring colours in the Upper Yarra Valley. The yearly event is held on the first week of October and this year six Upper Yarra Valley gardens are featured. From Don Valley to Warburton, the open gardens offer a journey through the Upper Yarra Valley full of spring splendour. Garden lovers can wander through the blossoming spring flowers and take in the unique garden designs and layouts. Kevin Hince, president of the Upper Yarra Valley Garden Club, said all the gardens featured were diverse in both their layout and the flowers they had on display. He said all members had been working hard to organise the event which is only held once every year. “There a variety of different gardens and all are very interesting ... at this time of the year many have azaleas, rhododendrons, magnolias, a lot of leaves coming onto trees, some blossoms around,” Kevin said. “It’s just a great day out for families.” All the garden owners look forward to the event which allows them to show off their labour of love. One such garden is located in Launching Place on Glenview road, and is owned by Gaylene and Peter. Predominantly native bush when the couple bought it, they have since

Keep Valley fruit fly free By Peter Douglas The Queensland fruit fly (QFF) is a devastating horticultural pest. Historically, from Queensland and NSW, it has recently been found in areas of northern Victoria. The Yarra Valley does not have QFF. We need to protect Yarra Valley horticulture, commercially, in small scale productions, and in urban gardens. The female QFF lays her eggs in fruit and some vegetables, damaging them and causing rot inside while the eggs mature into larvae, making the produce inedible and unsaleable. The fly’s lifecycle continues when the larvae move into the ground, pupate, and later mature into adult fruit flies. Fruit fly populations can increase very quickly. The damage can extend into neighbouring properties, or even across the region. The Yarra Valley is a valuable, ‘fruit fly free’ horticultural production area and is home to great edible gardens - both worth protecting! Forewarned and forearmed: We need to: * Prevent QFF being carried in to our properties and our region. The risk is the hidden larvae in fruit because they’re hard to see; * Harvest regularly, and clean up all ripe fruit from the ground -

so as to not attract fruit fly; * Remove unwanted or unmanaged plants that are likely QFF hosts. This includes blackberries, rogue fruit trees, and plants that are too large to easily harvest the fruit from. By carefully looking at our fruit, and monitoring pest incursions with early detection traps, we can be prepared to ‘quickly respond’ if there is an incursion, by killing the pest with baits and traps. If you have any suspect infested fruit, it needs to be heat treated or frozen to kill the larvae. Microwaving or solarising the fruit (in a sealed bag in the sun) are effective treatments. Treated produce can be later disposed of in the rubbish bin. Composting is not recommended. You are invited to attend the interactive presentations about Queensland Fruit Fly prevention and management being held around the Yarra Valley. Wandin Silvan Field days, 13 and 14 October - no bookings required; Landcare Weeds Workshop Olinda, 21 October (TBC); Healesville Living and Learning Centre, 23 October - 7pm and 15 November - 2pm (bookings via the learning centre); Yarra Glen Living and Learning Centre, 30 October 6pm and 13 November - 6pm (bookings via the learning centre). Keep Yarra Valley fruit fly free!

Queensland Fruit Fly threatens Yarra Valley horticulture production by laying tiny eggs inside fruit.. The damage is hard to see at first... The Fruit rots inside as the insect larvae grow. We can all help keep fruit fly out of the Yarra Valley! Freeze or cook produce from areas outside of the Yarra Valley. Kate Schumann had the idea for the garden.

From left, Shanti McLaren with Lily the dog, Ros Carter, Barb McFarlane, Michael Johnson, Kate Schumann and Fay Webster sit by the newly created food forest.

Forefront of food revolution By Derek Schlennstedt It’s a food revolution in the Dandenong Ranges and The Hills Food Frontier (THFF) in Tecoma is at the forefront of it. THFF is a volunteer-based group that inspires, mobilises and equips the hills community to choose, grow, share and eat good food. Their latest project has just come to an end with the construction of a food forest. Using permaculture principles, the food forest has incorporated edible shrubs, companion plants and a diverse

group of vegetables and fruits. “The Hills Food Frontier wants to make ugly places beautiful by growing food,” president, Shanti Mclaren said. Over the past year volunteers have been working hard to construct the sophisticated design which ensures the three by 15-metre section of garden is built as efficiently as possible. Michael Johnson, owner of The Basin Backyard helped the group to maximise usage of space. “It’s about making maximum use of the limited amount of space available so we can fit as many fruit trees as pos-

sible ... one of the best ways to do this is to have an espalier,” he said. “We put in six varieties of fruit and in the future with grafting we can turn six into 18.” “At the moment it’s fantastic but in the future it’s going to be spectacular the amount of produce that will come out of the limited space will be really impressive.” The addition of the organically grown food forest to the flame garden will help promote food security in Tecoma and provide access to healthy free food and education for those who need it.

The Hills Food Frontier also has a free food cupboard which is part of their Food is Free Tecoma program where the produce they get from the community garden goes towards the community and people who need it. “There are 700 people that are homeless in the Yarra Ranges,” Fay Webster who is part of the Tecoma Uniting Church said. The food forest utilises the flame garden situated at the Tecoma Uniting Church and has grown over the years from a simple community garden to a fully-fledged food forest. Ros Carter, a volunteer with the

THFF, said there were still plans to make it bigger and better. “We grow all kinds of vegetables, spinach, lettuce and beetroot - any kind of vegies that we can grow really,” she said. “We’re going to work on the understorey; berries and that sort of things ... create a little microclimate as part of the flame garden.” “All the food grown is collected by the community or placed in the food cupboard.” You can learn more about the group on wwww.thehillsfoodfrontier.org.au.

Take a little bit of green home The community is invited to join the Friends of Tindale Garden for their annual Spring Plant Sale at the George Tindale Memorial Gardens. The sale will be held from 9am to 2pm on Saturday 14 October. The selection of plants on offer will include varieties that will add colour to any garden, such as Hellebores and many other plants. The Friends of Tindale Garden will also be available on the day to provide advice on the horticultural requirements of newly purchased plants and share stories about the garden. President of the Friends of Tindale Garden, Lesley Butler, said it was a beautiful time of year to take in the gardens. “The George Tindale Memorial Garden is abundant with colour in spring, with many of the plants you see in the park also available to purchase, so you can grow them in your own garden,” he said. “The money raised through the plant sale will help the Friends of Tindale Garden continue with projects in the garden, so we encourage the visitors to support this day and enhance your own gardens at the same time.” The George Tindale Memorial Garden is located at 33 Sherbrooke Road, Sherbrooke. Entry into the gardens is free.

With warmer weather just around the corner, Victoria’s fire agencies are joining forces to encourage anyone planning a barbecue to ensure their LP gas barbecue is in good working order. CFA chief officer Steve Warrington says they want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable spring, so they’re asking the community to take a few simple safety precautions before they kick back and relax. “It’s vital to check that your barbecue’s gas cylinder, hose and connections are working properly,” he said. “Summer is on its way and we are about to enter the peak period for barbecue use. “If the connections on your barbecue are loose, the hose has perished or the cylinder has been damaged you could be putting your loved ones at risk of serious injury or even death.” MFB Assistant Chief Fire Officer Martin Braid said checking your barbecue was quick and easy to do and most barbecue fires could be avoided if a little more care was taken with the use and maintenance of gas barbecues. “You can check the hose and regulator connections are safe by spraying them with soapy water,” he said. “Bubbles will form if gas is escaping. If you’ve got any doubts about the connections, turn off the gas and replace the connection or contact a licensed gasfitter. “You should leak-test the connection to the gas cylinder every time you connect it. And remember, a barbecue should not be left unattended.“ To ensure your barbecue is safe: If a fire occurs, don’t try to extin-

Keep garden growing fire-wise Fire. The word resonates with residents throughout the Yarra Ranges and can bring back memories of Black Saturday and Ash Wednesday. Each year in spring, residents in fire-prone areas clean up their gardens and remove plants to reduce the risk of fire. But, just because you may live in a fire risk location, does not mean you have to sacrifice a bright and welcoming garden. The Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre (AWBEC) in Cockatoo has constructed an interactive fire-wise garden to prove not all fire-wise plants are dull and boring. “No plant is fireproof, and all will burn but some are more resistant to heat,” Graham Simpson, chairperson at AWBEC, said. The new fire-wise garden is designed to help educate the community on how to implement a fire-wise garden and reduce loads. With pebbles offering much more resistance than flammable mulch and various small but bright plants, the fire-wise garden offers a perfect example of how to beautify and reduce fire risk around your property. “It’s to pick plants that don’t readily ignite, what this firewise garden does is that it has signs with a QR code, which will take you to the CFA website which can tell you if your plants at home have a low or moderate fire risk,” he said. “These plants are all designed so they don’t touch each other, so the fire can’t jump to the next one.” All the plants at the AWBEC fall into the low to moderate fire risk range and many are native indigenous plants, which are perfect for attracting wildlife and birdlife to your backyard. Some of the plants include winter delight grevilleas, birthday candle banksias, bright and colourful lily pillies, and succulent red kangaroo paw. Graham said it was not difficult to create a firewise garden and that anyone could do it with plants readily available and reasonably priced.

A new garden at AWBEC in Cockatoo shows Dandenong Ranges residents that fire-wise gardens can be colourful and inviting, and still reduce fire risk.

Power of water By Derek Schlennstedt Warburton’s picturesque Ythan Creek is set to return to its former glory days as a hydro power supplier. The $1 million project will power 150 homes around the Warburton area and was confirmed as going ahead on Monday after it received backing from the State Government. On 25 September, Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes, visited the site at Ythan Creek and announced $450,000 in grant funding to the Warburton hydro project. That funding accompanies an already dedicated amount of $650,000 from Upper Yarra Community Enterprise (UYCE) and another $100,000 support from Yarra Ranges Council and energy retailer Powershop. O’Shannassy Ward Councillor, Jim Child said the funding announcement came after years of collaboration between UYCE, council and the Community and was a “tremendous outcome”. “This is a fantastic piece of news for the community, but not only that but for the Yarra Ranges,” Cr Child said. “To have the community on board, our local enterprise on board and our local municipality has been amazing.” “It doesn’t depend on the wind, doesn’t depend on the sun, just water flow coming for the Ythan creek.” The fast-flowing Ythan Creek is a natural feature on Warburton Golf course and the project will utilise the creek by drawing water into a generator-powered turbine and converting it into energy - with the water then returned to the creek. The project is estimated to generate around 800,000 kilowatt hours of power - equivalent of the power required for up to 150 homes, and the retail value of the power would be in excess of $200,000 a year. At the announcement UYCE direc-

Peter Van Loon, Josh Tomlin, Julian Guess, Jaclyn Symes, Joy McConachy, Michael Benveniste, Jim Child and Luke Whiteside beside the Ythan Creek which will accommodate the mini- hydroelectric infrastructure. tor Joy McConachy paid tribute to the efforts of late chairman, Peter Kimberley, in bringing the project to life. She said Mr Kimberley’s contribu-

tions would be immortalised through the project. “Peter was amazing on the Upper Yarra Community Enterprise, and we

would like to officially name the powerhouse, when built, the Peter Kimberley Powerhouse, recognising his tireless work,” she said.

At the council meeting on 26 September Councillor Child anticipated that the project would be completed by the middle of next year.

Fire safe power a priority By Derek Schlennstedt The installation of sophisticated underground power lines in Healesville will act to significantly reduce the risk to lives and property from bushfires. On Friday 22 September, Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio visited Healesville to view works being carried out as part of the government’s $750 million Power line Bushfire Safety Program. The high voltage power line replacement works in Healesville, due for completion in January 2018, have been accelerated for the upcoming fire season. This will see a total of 43km of bare-wire high voltage power lines replaced with safer technology, ensuring residents will benefit from increased safety. The works will include installation of a new sophisticated protection device at the Woori Yallock zone sub-station protecting over 650 km of power lines as well as the installation of 60 adjustable automatic circuit reclosers. There will also be the provision of three back-up generators in residential care facilities in Healesville and a further nine in residential care facilities in the Yarra Valley. Minister D’Ambrosio said the works would help improve community safety during the summer season which, she said, was likely to be worse than previous years. “We’re keeping the residents of Healesville and the surrounding areas safer from the risk of bushfires. These are not just words, its practical action,”

Bushfire risk reduction works will include installation of a new protection device at the Woori Yallock zone sub-station protecting over 650kms of power lines. Minister D’Ambrosio said. “The risk this summer is very real and we’re working to ensure Victorians have the best possible protection against bushfires.” That risk is very real, and according to The Southern Australia Seasonal

Bushfire Outlook, developed by the Bureau of Meteorology with fire and land managers - Victoria is likely to experience an above-normal fire season. Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley said the outlook was an early indication of what Victoria could expect in the summer season.

“The severity of the fire season will depend on a number of factors, including the amount, location and timing of rain in the months leading up to summer,” he said. “The early forecast shows there is underlying dryness in some areas of the state, particularly across central

parts of Victoria and across the east. “While there is a lot of surface water, which means there will be grass growth and a healthy supply of water for crop growing, ground moisture has the potential to dry out quickly under dry and warm conditions.

Rise in burglary, theft in Ranges Briefly By Derek Schlennstedt Burglary and theft have continued to increase in the Yarra Ranges, but the overall crime rate has fallen. Fresh new data released by Victoria’s Crime Statistics Agency on 28 September shows that for the Yarra Ranges the crime rate per 100,000 people fell by about 3 per cent in the last financial year, but that crime such as burglary, theft and drug use have risen. State Liberal Member for Eildon Cindy McLeish MP is concerned not enough is being done to stop the increasing rate of theft and burglary in the Yarra Ranges. “Despite a small decrease in crime across the state, it is continuing to rise across key areas such as burglary, robbery and theft.” “Daniel Andrews is failing to

address these crimes with property and deception offences increasing by 16.47 per cent since his election,” Ms McLeish said. In the year ending June 2017, burglary has increased 14 per cent from 644 to 734 offences in the Yarra Ranges with theft also increasing by 2.3 per cent. In Healesville, burglary has risen by 17.9 per cent in the last year from 39 offences to 46 while theft has risen 28.7 per cent from 108 offences in 2016 to 139 offences. Theft in Warburton has risen 50 per cent from 28 to 42 offences in the last year, and in Woori Yallock it’s much the same with theft having risen from 25 to 41 offences - a 65 per cent increase. In the Dandenong Ranges, the story is a bit different with suburbs like Belgrave experiencing a downturn in crimes such as robbery, as well as crimes against the person which is

Data sign stolen A yellow five-coloured data sign trailer was stolen from the vicinity of the Vasey Houghton Bridge on the Melba Highway, Yarra Glen, at 2pm on Friday 15 September. The alleged offenders have used an angle grinder to cut the locks and also managed to disable a GPS tracker on the unit. Police suspect a four wheel drive with mud tyres was used to tow the unit from the location. Anyone with any information is urged to call Crime Stoppers or Leading Senior Constable Barry Roberts at Yarra Glen police on 9730 1296. The data sign trailer was valued at $30,000, and at the time it was stolen had registration plates V78583.

Spring snakes The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning has urged residents in rural areas to take care as snakes become more active in the spring months. Senior Scientist from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP)’s Arthur Rylah Institute (ARI), Nick Clemann, said “Recent warmer weather has brought some

snakes out of their winter hibernation.” “People might be surprised to see snakes out this early in the year, but it’s not uncommon for them to be seen in August,” Mr Clemann said. “Even before spring arrives, snakes will be starting to emerge from their winter retreats.” “Snakes are more common around the urban fringe or in rural parts of Victoria, but they can also be found close to cities and towns, particularly around watercourses and parkland.” “Tiger snakes and lowland copperheads are the most frequently encountered snakes near the coast, while Eastern brown snakes are more common in drier areas.” In some areas red-bellied black snakes are also common.” Though Mr Clemman said it is rare for these snakes to bite people, he said that “they are all dangerously venomous.” “People often assume that snakes won’t be around at this time of year, but depending on where people live they could encounter a snake while walking the dog, cycling, bush-walking, gardening or visiting parks,” he said. “Be aware that snakes may be around, and be informed on how to react to them.”

down from 28 to 12. But theft remains high, and in Belgrave there has been a 26.3 per cent increase from 57 to 72 in the last year. Monbulk, though, is bucking the trend and is one of the few suburbs which have experienced a considerable decrease in theft from 60 to 37, a decrease of 38 per cent. Ms Mcleish attributed the increase of theft and burglary to the opportunistic nature of the crimes. “The worst thing about theft and burglary is the often indiscriminate nature of the crime ... anyone can have something stolen at any time.” “It is very easy for opportunistic criminals to target unlocked cars and garages, but what is more concerning is the often brazen nature in which criminals break into local homes and businesses,” Ms McLeish said.

A century ago the Anzacs were enduring the bloodiest and most costly year of World War I. Of the 60,000 Australians killed over the four years of the war, 21,000 perished in 1917 alone, and of those,

6400 died in October. For Australia, it was the worst month of the war. The bullets and the shrapnel that caused such devastating loss of life on the Western Front 100 years ago this week also tore through the hearts of families and communities across Australia. The Lilydale and Mt Evelyn RSL sub-branches have held a service on the centenary of the death of each local serviceman. I have had the privilege of attending many of them. Sometimes there has been a large crowd; sometimes just a handful of us. But each service has

given us an opportunity to pause and remember an individual from our community who served and died for our nation. The costliest period of the costliest year of the war is reflected in the number of ceremonies held last week and this week. Last Tuesday we remembered Edward Duncan and Hugh Comans. Duncan, who owned the Lilydale Hotel and Comans, a driver with the Lilydale Cordial Factory, were killed on 26 September 1917. On Saturday 30 September, a service was held for William Thurrow-

If you fit the over-fifties mold, come along for a game of tennis, a chat with old friends, some morning tea and a bit of nostalgia. Everyone is welcome and smaller modified courts are available if preferred. The event will take place on 16 October from 9.30-11.30am and will be held at the Yarra Glen Tennis Club located at 14 Anzac Avenue, Yarra Glen. Morning tea is provided. Basic classes take place on Thursdays 7-8pm and Intermediate classes are on Wednesdays 7-8.30pm during school terms. Bookings are essential.

Claude Douglas Pitt, a labourer from Mount Evelyn will be remembered at a service in his old town. As we approach the 99th anniversary of the Armistice that brought the Great War to an end, we remember the extraordinary impact of that conflict on so many Australian communities, just like ours. We recall the names of the young men who died and stand with their families as they grieve a loss sustained a century ago but felt just as keenly today, together ensuring that their service to our nation is never forgotten.

good who had been a grocer in Lilydale. On Sunday 1 October, William Shell, a Lilydale labourer who lived in Kidgell Street was remembered. This Wednesday, 4 October, services will be held at both the Lilydale Cenotaph and the Coldstream War Memorial for Robert Lawlor, a local labourer tragically killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium, aged 21. His death was not the only loss the family experienced. Robert’s brother Leonard was killed on the day of the landing at Gallipoli. At the same time on Wednesday,

COMMUNITY groups and organisations will be able to apply for up to four years of funding under Yarra Ranges Council’s upcoming Partnership Grants program. Applications will be open to organisations and groups delivering programs, services and festivals in the region, from Sunday 1 October. Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Services (DRERS), which provides emergency relief and a drop-in centre in Belgrave, was one of the recipients of the 2015-’18 Partnership Grants funding. DRERS Manager, Tania Bevan, said about 400 people drop in to DRERS annually to access services directly, but each interaction with a resident had a flow-on effect to others. “When we help a family, who may then assist a neighbour, indirectly, we know it affects more people than just the presenting client as part of the community, she said. Ms Bevan said the funding allowed the organisation to employ a part-time manager to oversee programs and assistance. “We help our community by providing a nonjudgemental place for them to come and talk about what they need assistance with.

the 2017 Australian Women in Wine Awards in London. The awards were established in 2014 to ‘celebrate and reward the work of women in the Australian wine community, as well as community leaders who champion equality and fairness for all sexes in the workplace’. Representing YVWW are Sarah Crowe from Yarra Yering, Sarah Fagan

from de Bortoli Wines, Clare Halloran from Tarrawarra, Caroline Mooney from Bird on a Wire, Sandra de Pury from Yeringberg and Kate Goodman from Goodman Wines. In conjunction with the awards, the winemakers have run a masterclass at the new Institute of Masters of Wine in London and followed this up with a tasting of current and museum Yarra

Valley wines for an invited group from the wine trade and media. They also addressed wine students at Plumpton College in Brighton and hosted a number of small consumer events in London and beyond. “YVWW believe their stories can add value, character and diversity to the broader regional wine message,” Nicole said.

Some of the region’s most talented winemakers have banded together to form Yarra Valley Wine Women (YVWW). Their objective is to celebrate, promote and support the success and achievements of women, often overlooked in an industry dominated by men. “In the Yarra Valley, female winemakers are punching well above their weight, with a highly talented and credible list of stars making the wines and driving some of the most successful and awarded wine brands in the country,” said Nicole Esdaile, a founding member of YVWW. It is estimated that women hold less than 10 per cent of the senior or leading production and management roles in the Australian Wine Industry, despite close to equal male and female numbers studying and graduating from oenology and viticulture courses. Meg Brodtmann, a founder of the group, and chief winemaker at Helen and Joey in Gruyere said the group started YVWW to promote women in the industry and wasn’t surprised by the statistics. “We want to promote women in the industry and we think it’s not an easy industry to stay in as your life changes,” Meg said. “Once you have kids, during vintage ... you have to be able to dedicate at least 12 hours a day, seven days a week to the job and if you have kids it becomes very difficult.” “Studies have shown 50 per cent of graduates are women, but 10 years later they drop out of the industry and they don’t return.” “So we want to say to women that you can make a career out of it, and to

New defibrillator for clubs By Wendy Williamson NEW life will be breathed into Warburton Bowls Club with the arrival of a new defibrillator and training package, courtesy of State Government funding. The Upper House Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes, said the club was one of two in her area to be successful in the third round of the Defibrillators for Sporting Clubs and Facilities Program. Already almost 900 of 1000 planned life-saving defibrillators have been rolled out to clubs and facilities across Victoria. “Defibrillators at local sports clubs like Warburton Bowls Club and Seymour Field and Game keep players safe, spectators protected, and are a vital

tool for the community,” Ms Symes said. “In a life-threatening sudden cardiac arrest - every second counts, and bystanders play a critical role. “As the local Member of Parliament, I’m proud of our local sports clubs like Warburton and Seymour for their efforts to make their environment more safe and enjoyable for all.” The new devices will appear on Ambulance Victoria’s database, so that triple-zero operators can direct callers to the new devices available when emergency strikes. For more information about the Defibrillators for Sporting Clubs and Facilities Program, visit www.sport.vic.gov.au.

Some minister The Mail newspaper (12 September) displayed Minister Michaelia Cash on their front page as being the Federal Government’s Minister for Women. Yet, several weeks ago Minister Cash was overjoyed in her support to an end of penalty rates for casual workers (who are mostly females, mums and students). During her joyous acceptance of a wage cuts for these casual workers, it was reported that Minister Cash had just purchased an investment property for more than $1 million. Minister for Women? I think not. June Smith, Alexandra

Smallbore calibre The recent Yarra Valley Law and Order Forum at

Woori Yallock, which I attended, was an excellent forum to gauge the calibre of political leadership and policy innovation. In particular, the innovation the Liberal-National Opposition could bring to the important community issue of law and order. If the performance of John Pesutto - the Shadow Attorney-General - is reflective of the Liberal National capacity for leadership on law and order, they score a fail. He promised to take control away from academics and give it to the people and ensure criminals paid their debt to society. He must have dragged a copy of the Tony Abbott populist policy handbook out of the bin. Clearly, he won’t be getting any well-researched analysis and advice on best-practice approaches to law and order from academics. No political leadership to be seen here. Mr Pesutto and Edward O’Donohue - the Lib-

eral-National Shadow Minister for Corrections, Police and Community Safety - in quoting crime statistics, relied on nobody bothering to check the statistics for themselves to see how selectively they have been used to try and make out the current State Government is the problem. A quick check of the stats suggest crime has been a problem for a very long time and Victorian State Governments, of all persuasions, despite all claiming to be tougher on crime than the others, have struggled to make significant, across-the-board progress. Who would have thought? Organised crime got no focus at the forum, even with the attendance of an ex-police commissioner of several decades ago. Also, scant regard was paid to the issue of rehabilitation. The Liberal-Nationals made it clear that rehabilitation was a secondary consideration to the

criminal paying their debt to society. It seemed to escape many speakers at the forum that a rehabilitated criminal becomes a positive contributor to society, such was the focus on retribution. After the meeting, I raised with Edward O’Donohue the innovative and very successful approach to reducing recidivist rates in Norway. He said he was aware of it and was very supportive of such an approach. Clearly there is not sufficient political backbone to demonstrate some real leadership and break with the ‘tougher on crime’ mantra as there is nothing progressive in their policy offerings. He may privately believe we can learn from the lessons of Norway, but unless he can rise above simple populism he is just another ineffective politician on the gravy train. Geoff Corcoran, Yarra Junction.

All aboard the money train By Derek Schlennstedt The Andrews Labor Government is taking action to protect the historic Healesville Railway Station. Labor Upper House Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes, visited Healesville Railway Station on Monday 25 September and announced funding for the conservation project. The project will receive $200,000 of funding as part of the Labor Government’s $36.5 million Living Heritage Grants Program. Ms Symes said the funds would cover conservation works to the Healesville Railway Station water tower and cast iron water crane - both stunning tributes to the operation of the rail yards in the steam era. Brett Morton president of Yarra Valley Railway thanked the State Government for their generous funding and said the water tower acted as an original landmark for Healesville, and he looked forward to seeing it restored. “If you look at pictures of Healesville railway station pre-1890s ... the thing that has always been there, is the water tower,” Brett said. “It’s one of the original landmarks of Healesville.” “We really would like to thank the State Government for contributing to the restoration ... it means that we can get these jobs done.” The conservation works follow the current redevelopment works being undertaken at Healesville Railway Station as part of the Yarra Valley railway tourism vision. Visiting the station, Ms Symes said “Healesville has a rich and vibrant history,” and that it was “vital that we conserve our important part of Victoria’s story”. “Heritage is a major attraction for Healesville and our region, boosting economic development and providing jobs,” Ms Symes said. “The Living Heritage Program provides funding for state-listed heritage places and objects that require investment to ensure they can be saved and preserved for future generations and I’m very pleased that the Labor Government is delivering again to protect the Healesville Railway Station.”

Jacyln Symes announced a funding boost of $200,000 to the Healesville Railway for much-needed conservation works.

The Victorian Government is taking action to make new homes, our communities and the environment safer by updating the Bushfire Management Overlay (BMO). The BMO is a planning control applied to land with the potential to be affected by extreme bushfires. New developments and uses in these areas may require a planning permit. This will ensure that bushfire hazards are assessed, and that measures are in place to manage bushfire risk. This update is a key part of the government’s commitment to implement all recommendations of the 2009 Victorian Bushfire Royal Commission. Existing homes are not required to make changes, but you should consider taking the following steps to make your home safer: • Move firewood away from your house and manage vegetation and fuel hazards. • Prepare your Fire Ready Kit. • Retrofit your home to make it safer. • Get advice on appropriate building insurance. • Stay informed on hot, dry, windy days by tuning into a broadcaster or downloading the VicEmergency app. Visit www.cfa.vic.gov.au for information on how to make a property safer.

Elton John still going strong By Derek Schlennstedt At 70 years old, Sir Elton John hasn’t lost any of his flair for performing rapturous piano melodies. The singer/songwriter graced the Yarra Valley on Sunday, performing hit songs, Rocket Man, Tiny Dancer and Bennie And The Jets at Rochford’s A Day on the Green. A commanding performer, Sir Elton amped up the excitment by opening with his classic and up tempo hit The Bitch Is back. His voice had lost none of its soulful potency, and he demonstrated that powerful bluesy yet sonorous voice by performing songs I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues, and Take Me To The Pilot. But, it was a lasting comment made by the songwriter mid-way through his performance that made crowds yellout in agreement and raise their hands in solidarity of same sex marriage. “People being blown up, having acid thrown in their face in England. People driving cars into people and killing them. Violence, hatred, God knows what else. North Korea. America. I actually hate it. “All I can do as a musician is play music and hope and pray that one day it’s going to get better because I don’t want my two boys to grow up in a world full of hate. “I want compassion, understanding, generosity of spirit and love ... that’s why you have to vote Yes, okay?” The statement was the perfect introduction to his hit song, ‘I want love’. The performance on Rochford’s lawn suited the icon, and as the sun descended beyond the horizon it was apt that Sir Elton should end with the sentimental Candle In The Wind.

Bedecked in a black and red bedazzled outfit, Sir Elton John's show at Rochford was big on the hits, but also on chat. 173459 Picture: DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT

With their three branches located in Healesville, Warburton and Vermont, Natural Hearing is working on early identification of hearing loss and its remedy. Natural Hearing’s Director of Audiology Vinay Kumar has been working on preventing hearing loss for over 25 years. Recently, Mr Vinay spoke of the correlation between hearing loss and cardiovascular disease. “A growing body of research is showing a solid connection between decreased blood flow from cardiovascular disease and low-frequency hearing loss,” Mr Kumar said. “Reduced blood flow in the body can cause the restriction of blood flow in the inner ear, causing irreversible damage and low frequency hearing loss. The pattern of this hearing loss can be seen in hearing tests, thus there is a connection between cardiovascular disease and audiometric patterns.” Mr Vinay also warned of the potential impacts smoking could have on hearing. “Hearing health experts have suspected that smoking contributes to hearing loss since an initial study in 1962; however, ongoing studies confirm it,” Mr Kumar said. “Smokers are 70 per cent more likely than non-smokers to suffer hearing loss, according to an article in the June 1998 Journal of the American Medical Association. The study also found that non-smokers living with a smoker were twice as likely to develop hearing

Health benefits from lap band While many TV shows portray weight loss as being a combination of hard training and strict dieting, LapSurgery Australia understands that those efforts may not be a sustainable solution for some people. As weight loss surgeon Mr Ray McHenry explained, having assisted over 4000 people in overcoming their weight problems since 1998, LapSurgery Australia can assist individuals battling major weight problems with a variety of procedures. “Major obesity is not the same as the weight gain for the average person,” Mr McHenry said. “(But) there’s a greatly increased risk of type two diabetes, some cancers, stroke, heart attack, joint diseases, depression, and there’s a lot of discrimination against people in the workplace who are significantly overweight.” Mr McHenry and surgeons Mr Richard Gilhome, Mr Chris Hensman and Mr Ara Saravanamuttu of Melbourne’s LapSurgery Australia specialise in laparoscopic (keyhole) and bariatric (weight loss) surgery. The surgeons have performed over 6000 bariatric operations since 1995. Procedures offered include Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, laparoscopic gastric banding and Orbera gastric balloon treatment; however the most common surgery undertaken is sleeve gastrectomy - a reduction in the volume of the stomach, which in turn reduces food

intake and feelings of hunger. “For the majority of patients the sleeve is a very, very good operation. It’s very effective, it’s effective long-term, easy to live with, the weight comes off quickly and they don’t get the driving hunger they do when you go on a normal diet,” Mr McHenry said. “The surgery is considered to be minimally invasive and aims for rapid recovery, minimal discomfort and a faster return to work.” Mr McHenry also said that although the sleeve was the most common operation in Australia and around the world now, it’s not for everybody and some patients, such as those with type two diabetes, women with polycystic ovary syndrome or those who suffer severe heartburn, the gastric bypass may be a better option. All LapSurgery Australia procedures include a post-operative treatment program. “We never discharge our patients, they need to be followed up for life,” Mr McHenry said. “(LapSurgery Australia) is a multi-disciplinary clinic. We have a specialised team of nurses, physicians, surgeons, dietitian and weight loss counsellor. It’s all part of a (treatment) team.” LapSurgery Australia is located at the Langwith Consulting Suites at 2 Langwith Avenue, Boronia. Histor y Week opens up pages

Penelope Spry and Paul Balassone from Melbourne Water with Alma Mitchell, secretary of Healesville and District Historical Society in front of the new exhibition at Healesville Library. 173423 Picture: WENDY WILLIAMSON

By Wendy Williamson Healesville Library is getting in early with its celebrations of History Week, 15-22 October. All this month the library is hosting displays from Melbourne Water in association with the local historical society marking the 90th anniversary of the completion of Maroondah Dam in 1927. The Healesville and District Historical Society display charts the history, on illustrated boards, of the Maroondah Water Supply Scheme at Healesville from its early days as the Watts River Scheme to now when it is an integral part of Melbourne’s water supply. Accompanying this display is an exhibition assembled by Melbourne Water’s heritage staff. It features artefacts from the Maroondah Collection at Preston Reservoir. Items on display behind the glass include books with early photos of Maroondah Reservoir, a pick from the 1930s, Board of Works signs from the old MMBW and a surprising variety of tourism merchandise. These include teaspoons, bottle openers, ashtrays and postcards featuring pictures of the reservoir. “Maroondah Reservoir was quite the place to go in the early years and visitors wanted souvenirs,” explained Melbourne Water archaeologist Penelope Spry, who assembled the exhibition with heritage manager Paul Balassone. In addition to the month-long exhibition, during History Week visitors to the library will be able to view historic footage of the construction of the dam and listen to talks delivered by Melbourne Water experts. At 2pm on Monday 16 October, in ‘Water for Healesville’ John de Boer will talk about the history of Healesville’s water supply network from the 1890s to the 1990s. At 10.30am on Tuesday October 17 the focus will turn to the future. Con Gantonas will talk about the MaroondahCoranderrk Liveability Plan, outlining the exciting recreational opportunities created by the decommissioning of the aqueducts. The talks are free. Contact the library for further information/bookings.

Health’s night of nights Eastern Health is set to light up the Plaza Ballroom again, with its annual Searchlight Dinner on Tuesday, 31 October. This year’s event will put the spotlight on mental health, in particular suicide. Acting Eastern Health Foundation Director Carolyn Schuwalow said funds raised from the evening would go towards implementing Eastern Health’s Zero Suicide program. She said the program aimed to educate Eastern Health staff to better understand and identify those at risk of suicide; empower consumers to build resilience and skills to manage emotional well-being and life stressors; and engage the broader community on a robust discussion leading to action on suicide and mental illness. “Zero Suicide will be implemented across inpatient units at Maroondah and Box Hill hospitals and Yarra Ranges Health; emergency departments at Box Hill, Maroondah and Angliss Hospitals; as well as the broader community.” Ms Schuwalow said Zero Suicide was premised on the belief that suicide deaths for people in care were preventable. In Victoria, 646 died by suicide - more than double the road toll. “We know Zero Suicide is a bold and ambitious goal ... it is an aspirational challenge that we accept.” Special guests for the evening will include former AFL player Wayne Schwass, who will share an honest and inspiring story about his struggle with depression. The event will also feature live music, terrific dining, raffles, and auctions featuring ’money can’t buy’ experiences. KAGE opens up By Peter Douglas Multi-award winning dance company KAGE is heading to the Yarra Ranges to deliver an exciting new work for local audiences. In December 2016, the Victorian Dance Sector was invited to develop an accessible new performance work and a series of workshops, which were thematically and artistically connected with the region’s unique narratives. KAGE - comprising of duo Kate Denborough and Gerard Van Dyck - impressed immediately with the development of a unique dance performance, TONIC. Inspired by the preservation of ecosystems within the Yarra Ranges, the performance explores the implicit relationship the community has to the health of the environment. Van Dyck said he had developed a genuine affinity for the Yarra Ranges region. “Having grown up in Sunbury, and on rural properties, I felt an immediate connection to the region. There is a real sense of tranquillity and peace here,” he said. “It’s such a place of beauty, peace and silence ... an escape from the cosmopolitan nature of Melbourne. “The performance is about how we need a sense of belonging and a feel of place, particularly in this day and age.” Van Dyck said he and dance partner, Kate, met while they were training at the Victorian College of the Arts, where they realised they shared many similar traits.

Dance duo Kate Denborough and Gerard Van Dyck are ready to entertain local audiences. “We shared bonds over our similar aesthetic, in the way we portray human expression. We both have an acting background and make for a great team,” he said. KAGE has been re-thinking dance for 20 years. Now it is the Yarra Ranges’ chance to be a part of their unique performances. Denborough and Van Dyck specialise in collaborating with extraordinary artists and communities to find original ways to present dance in new contexts, creating exquisite performances that harness the dramatic potential of dance and extreme physicality with irreverence and humour. TONIC will be performed across three venues in the Yarra Ranges:

Burrinja Cultural Centre, Arts Centre Warburton and The Memo Healesville as part of the region’s annual Culture Tracks program. Creative development sessions, including a free masterclass, open rehearsal and conversations with KAGE will also be offered. An integral element to the Creative Community’s region-wide, three-year dance-tracks strategy, this commission will contribute to the integral goal in creating a sustainable culture of dance performance and presentation, engaging the local and metropolitan community, industry groups and support audience development around dance. Local audiences are invited to experience, explore and enjoy this new contemporary dance performance. Tickets: $28 (full), $24 (concession) Performances: Burrinja, Upwey: 12 October at 7.30pm; The Memo, Healesville: 14 October, 7.30pm; Arts Centre, Warburton: 28 October, 7.30pm; and ‘In Conversation with KAGE’ (4.30pm) and ‘Creative Development Open Rehearsal with KAGE’ (3pm) are available on Sunday 8 October (free; bookings essential). Marysville ready for jazz Just a couple of hours' drive from the big smoke where the trees are tall and the locals inviting, the idyllic township of Marysville is ready to bring together locals and visitors alike for its third annual Marysville Jazz and Blues Weekend. Running from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 October, the award-winning event celebrates music, food, wine, and community. The event has become one of the biggest events on the local calendar and the perfect springtime escape for the broader community. Initially the idea of a local Marysville resident Peter Guest, the first Jazz and Blues Weekend took place in 2015. Since, the 2016 and 2017 events were organised by a small and dedicated hard working community committee assisted by local volunteers. In both 2015 and 2016, the Marysville Jazz and Blues Weekend was awarded the “Best Community Event of the Year" by the Murrindindi Shire and Victorian Government. From its humble beginnings, the Marysville Jazz and Blues Weekend is proud to present over 25 jazz and blues greats for the 2017 event, including ARIA award-winner and Australian blues and roots legend Russell Morris. Joining Russell is all-round Aussie blues heavyweight Geoff Achison and the Soul Diggers who will have just returned from their US tour. The 2005 Australian Blues Music Festival and Male Artist of the Year Lloyd Spiegel will also return, along with Mike Rudd and his everevolving and eclectic band Spectrum. Returning to the Marysville

The award-winning Marysville Jazz and Blues Weekend will return for the third year this October. Jazz and Blues Weekend, Spectrum will play quirky material from the original Spectrum days. Bringing the Jazz to Marysville will be The Tracey Roberts Quartet with their joyful, vibrant jazz-folkfunk, laced with dynamic and sophisticated lyrics, along with Melbourne-based vocalist Anita Harris. Other highlights will be transcendent diva, cabaret artiste and jazz singer Mama Alto, who draws upon legacies of vintage torch singers for sharing her sublime storytelling, as well as artists Shirazz, Eva To Diva, Bo Jenkins and many more. The Marysville Jazz and Blues Weekend runs from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 October. A full printed and downloadable festival program, town map and shuttle bus schedule will be available on the website at the beginning of October. theme of fear. The teenagers must overcome their own personal hardships and abusive family lives, and since Pennywise the Clown (Bill Skarsgard), the film’s demonic antagonist, uses fear to weaken its prey, the characters’ hard-won growth factors into their battle against Pennywise. Skarsgard is a revelation as Pennywise, and may even surpass Tim Curry’s iconic performance from the 1990 It miniseries. Skarsgard plays Pennywise as a savage predator, but possessed of a cheeky exuberance and nasty wit.

The Dark Tower was a very poor Stephen King adaptation, but It is a truly spectacular one. Seven teenage outcasts band together to fight an ancient evil that has been terrorising the town of Derry, Maine for centuries. It is dark and confronting but still has very organic humorous moments about adolescent life. The core cast has fantastic chemistry, and the film uses outstanding character development to centralise the

His mocking smile alone will send shivers down your spine, and even Skarsgard’s movements are spidery and inhuman. The only problem with It is that some of the teens receive less development and insight into their fears than others, but I suspect this is more the fault of studio interference cutting the film down than of the filmmakers themselves. It is a stunningly wellwritten and produced horror film about the crushing impact fear can exert on the human mind. - Seth Hynes

Bowling green in a makeover By Wendy Williamson

Sunshine sparkling on a new green ensured the pennant season got off to a great start at Yarra Junction Bowling Club on Tuesday, 26 September. It was the first opportunity to host midweek pennant since the club’s major upgrade, which included a new synthetic playing surface, new lighting system, additional seating and retractable shade structure. Club president Peter Willis said he couldn’t be happier. “We tried for five years to get funding to upgrade our green. It got to the stage where I said we’d have to fold as a club if we didn’t have a new

green,” Mr Willis said. “Then over the last 12 months we started to get somewhere, particularly when council got behind the project.” The green was out of action from December to April while the upgrade was underway. Pennant matches had to be played away. Home games were moved to Cockatoo. The redevelopment is a great example of community co-operation. Yarra Ranges Council contributed $120,000, the Victorian Government $40,000, the Warburton and Yarra Junction Community Bank branches $26,000, and the club raised $60,000 for the project.

The club is all about community, Mr Willis said. “New members are always welcome and coaching is free. We will shortly be inviting students from the local secondary college to come along and have a bowl.” Coming up soon on 13 October is Seniors Day, when all seniors are welcome to come along and have a bowl. Social bowls are held on Thursdays, and on summer evenings the green is alive with barefoot bowls - the season will start at the end of October, under the new lights. Anyone is welcome to join in. Contact Myrna on 0419 103 543 or Ian on 0419 685 425.

Tex impresses at Warburton WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY Stableford: The daily winner was Tex Van Der Kooi with an impressive 38 points. Clearly, Tex and the rest of the field enjoyed drying conditions, which makes playing golf a lot more pleasurable experience. Harrison Baxter was runner-up on a countback with 36 points. The ball count extended to 33. The day’s NTPs went to Steuart Hawke (for his accurate approach shot on the 1st); Harry’s dad, John, snared one on the 3rd and CHB once again ‘mastered’ the 15th. SATURDAY 4BBB Paired Stableford: Ralph Logan and Clint Toohey won the day with a super-impressive 47 points. Even with a great score like that, they only just pipped Meredith Nursey and Geoff Fall, who accumulated 46. If your team scored 42, or better, you each get a ball! NTP winners were Adam Patrick (3rd), Shane Campbell (5th), Sean Nicholl (9th), Ralph (12th) topping off a great day for him, and to Captain Murch (15th).

And what a day it will be Residents and visitors are invited to experience a free day of art, music and events at a community big day out to be held on Saturday, 7 October. From 10am to 3pm, the Yarra Ranges Mayor’s Big Day Out will be held at Burrinja Cultural Centre in Upwey, with interactive entertainment for residents of all ages and abilities. Artworks will be on display in the gallery, while performances will be held in the venue’s main theatre. A community expo will be also held at the event, showcasing community groups from the municipality, along with various council departments and their roles. Yarra Ranges Council Mayor, Cr Noel Cliff, said the event would be an affordable day out, with accessible entertainment for every member of the community. “This event is a chance for our residents to let their hair down and have simple, free fun at one of our world-class venues,” Cr Cliff said. “We’ll have a magician, workshops and drumming activities for kids, with music and performances for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy. “I encourage everyone in the Yarra Ranges community to come along and see everything their municipality has to offer. I look forward to seeing you there.” The Upwey CFA will hold a sausage sizzle at the event, with food available for a gold coin donation. Burrinja Cultural Centre is located at 351 Glenfern Road, Upwey. For more information, visit www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au.
