By Cam Lucadou-Wells We all know what Pauline Hanson thinks of burqas.

So what do you think will happen if Ms Hanson came face-to-face with a burqaclad woman on stage?

And perhaps, throw in a masked Australian ‘hero’ such as Ned Kelly.

This charged scenario has been conceived by writer and teacher Kuranda Seyit in his original play The Gang, which will be performed in a one-off show in Dandenong.

“I’d been thinking about how Ned Kelly is Australia’s national icon and just about everyone sees him as a hero, yet he was famous for wearing a mask, similar to a burqa.

Then the thought struck me why not have Ned, a Burqa clad woman and Pauline Hanson all in the same room, discussing the issues?”

In one of the play’s satiric moments, Pauline Hanson succumbs to her “inner Muslim” and indulges in a Halal Snack Pack (HSP), Mr Seyit says.

The play is also about two young Muslim characters - Tarik, who is pressured to join a criminal gang, and Nadia, who considers taking off her hijab to avoid Islamophobic attack.

A Noble Park food business owner has been convicted for what a magistrate described as some of the worst food safety and hygiene offences he’d seen.

Mohammed Naim Azdari, 42, faced 17 charges with a cumulative minimum $680,000 in fines for the filthy state of his fruit and vegetables business, Noble Park Fruit Mart in Douglas Street.

In April, a neighbouring business had complained about a strong smell, rotting food, increased flies and rats at the premises.

A Greater Dandenong inspector was said to have “gagged” while opening orange garbage bins of waste meat during the first inspection on 20 April.

She was told by the person-in-charge ‘Roy’ that the bins had “been like that since Easter” which was four days earlier.

The next day, inspectors discovered an orange bin’s contents being turned into the gutter.

Among the litany of problems was a broken sewerage pipe on the roof, blood, dirt and meat residue in the cool room and dead insects and food residue throughout the premises.

There was also evidence that workers weren’t washing their hands at the basin, as well as uncovered meat stored under a bench.

Azdari’s lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 28 September a food safety adviser had been since hired to fix the problems.

Magistrate Barry Schultz retorted: “Even with a cursory look at the photos, one would not need an expert adviser.

“It’s confronting to say the least.

“Blind Freddy would know that couldn’t comply.”

Azdari had later told inspectors that the sewerage pipe was fixed but failed to provide a plumbing report as requested.

He’d spent $15,000 to repair the pipe, his lawyer told the court.

The accused, who had worked in food businesses in Afghanistan and Melbourne since 2000, was “not a wealthy man”.

“Those (potential) fines are suffice to give people a heart attack,” he said.

“I hope Your Honour will go nowhere near those limits.”

Mr Scultz said his sentence needed to reflect the “grave public concern”, the need to deter other food vendors but not a fine that would crush Azdari.

It showed either a “flagrant disregard” for food standards or that he’d been an “absentee manager”.

“Other business owners particularly in the food handling area are under a very onerous obligation to the community in large.

“It was there but by the grace of God, no-one suffered a food poisoning incident that we’re aware of.

“Mr Azdari, I’ve seen a lot of photos of premises ... yours rank amongst the worst.”

Azdari was convicted and fined $35,000.

Violence against sisters

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Dandenong man has been accused of family violence against two sisters who have each been his partner at separate times.

The three parties all live under the same roof, so the accused could help his former partner with their kids, police informant Acting Sergeant Craig Milne told a court.

Both sisters were protected by intervention orders against the man - described by the judge as a “strong” and “powerful” individual.

In one rage, the man allegedly crushed the phone of his former partner in his hand.

She had tried to phone triple-zero. He squeezed the phone until the screen “snapped”, the bail hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard.

The phone was rendered unusable.

The man told police that the victim had thrown the phone at his head, and then he’d held the victim down to calm her.

But Act Sgt Milne told the court that the phone

was “bent in half ” and not consistent with the man’s version of events.

“I believe if he’s bailed, the victim would be in serious danger from the accused’s violent behaviour.”

In court, the man - through his lawyer claimed the complainant had broken the phone by leaving it in a folding chair.

On 18 August, the man allegedly assaulted the second victim - and his current partner - in the car park of Keysborough Hotel after an alcoholfuelled dispute at a pool table.

He held her against a fence, then put her in a headlock, Act Sgt Milne said.

The man’s defence lawyer denied the allegations of violence, though conceded the man was alcoholic drinking an “unbelievable” 18 mixed drinks on one occasion.

In the past, the man had been found guilty of assaulting the former partner and intentionally injuring his current partner.

Act Sgt Milne said the accused, currently on a community corrections order, had failed to ap-

pear on bail six times in the past five years.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the man also failed to appear at a judicial monitoring court hearing in April.

“He’s at incredibly high risk of re-offending.”

Mr Vandersteen said drinking seemed to be at the core of the man’s violent behaviour.

He advised the man to attend Alcoholics Anonymous or risk going back into custody.

“I find you an easy person to deal with ... but God you drink a lot.

“You’re a very big person, a very powerful individual. If you turn towards people and become violent, it becomes very difficult for people to deal with.”

The man was jailed for 30 days - which had already been served in remand.

He was also put on a 12-month treatment-only community corrections order, excluding him from licensed premises.

He moved out of the house as part of a varied intervention order, and was ordered to pay $400 to replace the broken phone.

Pencil pals were drawn to romance A stroke of a pencil began Springvale couple Kok Leong Lam and Hoe Loo Yeoh’s 60-year love story.

The duo met in Malaysia when by chance Kok Leong befriended Hoe’s older brother.

Both friends had an interest in lead pencil drawing and while sketching together Kok Leong met Hoe. Kok Leong would make up excuses to come and draw, just so he could bump into his future bride.

They were married on 15 September 1957 and recently celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary at their Springvale Aged Care Facility.

They moved to Australia six years ago to retire and spend more time with their children and seven grandchildren and have been active members of the Springvale community.

The Greater Dandenong Council unanimously voted on September 25 to make a 7.3 metre standard width for all new subdivided roads.

It is a bid to stop narrow streets with minimal parking being built by developers.

Cr Sean O’Reilly says residents see they’re getting more and more “squeezed like sardines in a can”.

“On a lot of the newer roads, they don’t appear wide enough,” he said during the council meeting on Monday.

“The roads appear squeezed in ... and you have people parking all over the place."

Residents will also be able to park with “two wheels up” on nature strips in roads narrower than 6.6m, provided cars are not causing a hazard.

The council will also look to negotiate with developers to meet minimum required car parking spaces for new developments.

High demand areas like Keysborough South will also be looked at to see if more parking spots can be offered.

Cr O’Reilly said the council had created their own technical report, with a view to getting a statewide review of the Victorian Planning Scheme to potentially rectify the issue.

He said the council would “see how far we can push it".

“Some would say it’s an impossible mission but we’re listening to residents and we’re going to see how far we can go."

The council’s report also found that high car ownership per household, a reduced ability for a people to accommodate cars in their driveway or garage and a narrow residential street frontage contributed to parking issues in streets.

Hats off to the unlikely heroes From front page Mr Seyit says the target audience was initially Muslim youth but hopes the mix of absurd drama, satire, comedy, rap and music gets an airing with mainstream audiences.

It’s often underestimated how much young Muslims are impacted by media reports. At school, students hear the word “Islam” and they associate “terrorist”.

“They grow up with the feeling that Muslims are terrorists, Muslims are violent and a lot of people don’t want them here.

“Though young people are resilient with these terrible things that are happening around them, we can’t completely eschew this negativity.”

The play is partly funded by Greater Dandenong Council. It is supported by Mr Seyit’s group Forum on Australia’s Islamic Relations (FAIR).

It will be performed at the Castle Theatre in Dandenong on Saturday 7 October, from 7pm.

Pictures paint their centuries

By Helen Velissaris Take it from Mary Colquhoun and Joyce Millen, both 101-years-young - the secret to longevity is plain food and hard work.

The ladies are two of three women from the Greater Dandenong area that have been immortalised in portraits for a special exhibition profiling 100 of Melbourne’s centenarians.

Each portrait is done by a local young artist, who takes control of the whole project from start to finish.

For many, it’s the first time they’ve had the opportunity to meet a centenarian.

Alkira Secondary School student Sally Contarino, 17, said she was nervous about meeting Mrs Colquhoun but soon eased into it.

“But Mary is a happy little lady, she’s always smiling and making jokes,” Sally said.

“It was really easy to get to know her and her history.”

Mrs Colquhoun’s humour was apparent when she said that her long life was down to not eating take away food.

“Everything was grown, jams were made, bread was made, mother only cooked with a camp oven,” she said.

Jessie Nugyen, 17, used her Vietnamese to help chat with 104-year-old Keysborough resident Thi Hoi Nugyen.

She made sure to include Mrs Nugyen’s chal-

lenging early life in Vietnam when she had to flee from political unrest.

The rickety bamboo rafts Mrs Nugyen had to use to escape from the north to the south of Vietnam are included in the portrait.

“It was a really tough journey,” the Keysborough College student said.

She said the hardest part of painting Mrs Nugyen was getting her expression right.

“She has a really bright face and she’s looking up so it’s a positive vibe,” she said.

Mrs Millen, the proud great grandmother of 33 and a great-great grandmother of three, thought her portrait was “very nice” and found all the fuss a bit much.

But, in looking back on her life, she thinks it was her hard work that gave her longevity and said she has no regrets.

An avid Geelong supporter, she was able to witness history in 1931.

“My uncle coached Geelong in 1931 to premiers,” she said.

“We were very excited.”

The three portraits will be included as a part of the 100 Portraits of 100-year-olds exhibition from 4-17 October.

They will be displayed at The Stables at the Meat Market, 2 Wreckyn Street, Melbourne, from 10am-5pm.

After the exhibition, the portraits will be given as gifts to the subjects.

Tall church close to God A church almost three times taller than the Green Wedge Zone’s preferred height limit has been controversially approved in Lyndhurst.

The proposed Coptic church at a rural setting in 785 Thompsons Road was passed during a heated debate at Greater Dandenong Council, in which a Greens councillor reacted angrily to an accusation of being opposed to Christian places of worship.

The church for up to 500 worshippers would have towers of up to 23 metres tall, with a multipurpose hall, indoor plant nursery, soccer pitch, horse stables, a priest/caretaker’s dwelling and 150-space car park.

Its 13-metre main building is well above the zone’s preferred eight-metre height limit.

At a 25 September meeting, Cr Matthew Kirwan said the council would further damage its reputation by approving the project after a lot of recent “bad press” of its Green Wedge decisions.

He said he supported large churches, temples and mosques and community centres if they are “beneficially” located, such as in a residential zone.

“It’s a case of a good church in the wrong place,” he said.

He said places of worship were permitted in the zone but not such a “massive building” that would dominate the area’s rural character. “(This is) something that should be in Springvale or Noble Park or Dandenong North - not in the middle of nowhere in the isolated backblocks of Lyndhurst.”

“This won’t just dominate the landscape as buildings in the Green Wedge are not meant to do, it will dwarf everything else.”

Cr Kirwan said the council could expect another intervention by state Planning Minister Richard Wynne, who recently blocked the council’s approval of a “produce market” in Bangholme’s Green Wedge.

Cr Tim Dark claimed Cr Kirwan had no objection to mosques or community centres “but this is a church” - an accusation that was quashed by a point of order.

Cr Zaynoun Melhem told Cr Kirwan: “It’s not up to us to tell the Coptic Church how to design their church”.

He said the church - part of the oldest church denomination in the world - was an allowed use, and there were already four places of worship in Greater Dandenong’s Green Wedge.

It would be the only Coptic Church in Greater Dandenong to serve its strong following in the

municipality.

It would be located near “thousands of people” set to move into nearby housing estates under the Thompsons Road Precinct Structure Plan.

Cr Melhem said the applicant had changed the landscaping, car park and siting of structures to provide a less imposing proposal.

“It’s a no-brainer,” he said.

“We do want community soccer pitches, we do want places to congregate ... we want places with lots of car-parking.”

City planning director Jody Bosman told the meeting the Green Wedge’s preferred eight-metre height limit was designed to maintain an appropriate “open sky vista” but wasn’t “proscriptive”.

Objector Barry Ross, of Defenders of the South-East Green Wedge, said the group would lodge an appeal at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Triburnal.

“We are very disappointed that the officer’s report and those councillors who supported the proposal so readily dismissed the recommendations of council’s own Green Wedge Management Plan.

“We believe the bulk and scale of the development would be completely out of place in the open rural countryside.”

By Helen Velissaris A Noble Park man with a penchant for Crunchie chocolates has attempted to rob a service station and a bottlo - with a spoon.

The 46-year-old was laughed at when he entered the Caltex service station on Heatherton Road, Noble Park, on 25 September, about 2pm.

Brandishing the handle of the spoon to make it look like a weapon, he demanded cash from the attendant.

Not having much luck, the man grabbed three Crunchie bars from the front display and made a run for it.

But his Crunchie haul wasn’t enough, so he popped into the local BottleMart brandishing his spoon again.

This time the attendant hit the duress button which scared him off before police caught up with him at his home in Noble Park.

Heartless thieves have stolen a CFA collection tin after breaking into three Keysborough shops.

At least two men broke into the Keysborough South Shopping Centre late in the evening of 24 September, police said.

They targeted a noodle and sushi restaurant first, stealing $500 in coins and an iPad, before moving to a Fish ‘n’ Chips shop.

There they took a Keysborough CFA collection tin, a cheque book and a computer before moving to a nearby cafe and stealing $350 cash.

Swan’s siren song Former Collingwood star Dane Swan had to postpone planned prolonged celebrations with his good mate and now fellow Brownlow Medallist Dustin Martin.

Swan told a gathering of business people at the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Grand Final Lunch at the Southern Golf Club in Keysborough on Wednesday that he had blocked out two or three days this week to celebrate his mate’s Brownlow Medal win on Monday night.

However, the celebrations were put on hold because the Richmond star had more pressing duties in Saturday’s AFL Grand Final at the MCG. “Suddenly the week became a lot calmer,” he smiled.

Swan spoke of the bad attitude that held him back early in his AFL career and the turnaround that led to him being an integral part of the Collingwood premiership side in 2010 and winning the Brownlow Medal the following year.

He says he should have three Brownlow Medals though - explaining that he was beaten by Carlton’s Chris Judd as a red-hot favourite in the premiership year, he won it in 2011 and had polled 19 votes before being injured in 2012.

“And Bucks (coach Nathan Buckley) suspended me for two weeks for drinking that year too, so I say to people that I really should have three Brownlows.”

In retirement, Swan agreed to enter the African jungle in the third series of the television reality show I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here - and was runner-up to former singing star Casey Donovan.

He said the hardest thing about being in the jungle was the boredom.

“You spend the entire time in a space half the size of this room,” he said.

Swan ate up the challenges, literally.

He smashed his way through the eating challenges and loves the likes of skydiving and bungee jumping.

“You meet a few good people in there, but you also come across some f-wits as well,” he said.

Swan says he still keeps in touch with former My Kitchen Rules contestant Ash Pollard, model Kris Smith, shock jock and TV host Steve Price and comedian Nazeem Hussain.

MC John Shore of Ray White Chelsea, who has compered the event for all of its 18 years, observed that Swan had smashed the record for dropping the f-word, but no-one in the crowd seemed to mind.

Proceeds from the lunch were shared between the Caroline Chisholm Foundation to help the disadvantaged access education pathways and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Lawrie Leeman from Make-A-Wish said lunch had raised $84,000 for its cause in the nine years it had been involved.

Cafe is open for opportunities

By Helen Velissaris Keysborough single mum Ilana Offman knew she had to do something to ensure her five-year-old’s future.

Diagnosed with autism, ADHD and a sensory processing disorder, young Austin was at the front of Ilana’s mind when she opened Cafe Noir in Kirkham Road West, Keysborough.

She quit her job, threw all her savings at the cafe and signed the lease with two goals in mind.

“Number one I wanted a business and a job that I could provide a good life for my kids,” she said.

“I also thought it was a good way to make sure that Austin over time would always be able to get into sustained employment.”

She’s trying to change the perceived notions of workers with special needs and make sure they’re not overlooked.

Her cafe opened on 28 August and Ilana has already hired 20-year-old autistic kitchen hand Justin Burton.

Justin has excelled at keeping things neat, clean and organised and has tried his hand at making pies and serving customers.

“One of the new employees was, unfortunately, unwell and I had to run dishes down, it was fun,” he said.

A stickler for not breaking the rules, Justin has been known to time his breaks to the minute to make sure he’s not wasting company time.

“Usually on my break I’d take my own lunch and they kept advising me ‘stop taking your lunch, you can have stuff on the menu’,” he said, adding his favourite meal is a burger.

Ilana has been very impressed with Justin’s work and has been advocating for more local business to take on workers with special needs.

Already a business in the industrial estate has hired a personal assistant with special needs after seeing Justin’s work ethic.

Ilana wants people with special needs to not be treated differently and be paid a normal wage.

Justin said he was working nine hour shifts for a supermarket which was paying him $10 a day because he was doing “work experience”.

His autism helped him pack shelves twice as quick as the other employees.

“No, I can’t fathom how that can exist.”

Ilana is making sure to pay Justin the usual rate for a kitchen hand and expects that to rise as his experience grows.

“People just don’t realise how much worth they actually have,” she said.

“They consider it a burden to try and train them they just don’t realise it that special needs people are going to work so much harder for you and they’re going to be so much more dedicated to you because they’ve got an opportunity.”

She hopes that if the cafe does well she will be able to hire another worker with special needs and eventually open more cafes with at least two special needs workers in every shop.

Cafe Noir is open from 6am to 2.30pm and is at 2 Kirkham Road West, Keysborough.

Nightmares and physical scars are still plaguing a Dandenong North husband and wife who were attacked in their own home.

But support from the community is helping Pero and Radmila to recover from the 20 August ordeal in Victor Avenue.

Silverton Cricket Club president Shane King presented the couple and their three children with a cheque for $1400.

Radmila has had surgery on her broken hand and is recovering slowly.

Pero is battling a constant whistling noise in his head due to a fractured skull.

But like their three daughters, they’re suffering nightmares and are too scared to leave their house after dark.

There’ll be further donations to come, with a GoFundMe appeal having raised $1805 so far.

Businesses Waterchem WA, Odour Management Seaford, International Chemicals Engineering and Alleys Electrical have made substantial donations.

Silverton Cricket Club members and members of the general public have also chipped in.

“The sad issue is that everyone has now moved on with their lives but Pero and Radmila are stuck in their torment, trying to face their injuries while making sure their girls are OK and trying to source enough money to stay afloat,” a Silverton spokesman said.

The club established a Facebook page opposing violence and the online donation portal.

Mr King wants the club to be a safe haven and positive influence for kids in the area.

“It’s like something’s broken and I think a positive early influence in their life is a way of fixing it,” he said.

“I opened the door. They were already at the door and pushing the door in,” Radmila said.

“We tried to push them out.”

There were four men, all perceived to be of African appearance and wearing hooded tops and face coverings.

During the struggle, Pero was struck to the head and fell unconscious to the floor. He has a fractured skull.

One of the bandits hit Radmila with a baseball bat, and she hit back with her hands.

Pero came to and instinctively grabbed a candle holder and headed for the door.

The men fled empty-handed but the damage was done.

Making a difference in MAD way

By Casey Neill A Dandenong charity is asking businesses to go MAD. Thane Commercial managing director Neil Tunstall is working with Avocare director Trish Keilty to run Make a Difference (MAD) with Avocare.

“Avocare is Dandenong-based and charity begins at home,” Ms Keilty said.

So MAD will reach out to the local business community.

“All charities run on the smell of an oily rag,” Ms Keilty said.

“We’re always chasing money.

“To have a local businessman take an interest and work in their community is nothing but a bonus for all of us.”

Ms Keilty said the charity needed another van, to update its website, and continue to feed the needy.

“Our computer system is archaic and we keep patching,” she said.

“We’re putting patches on patches on patches.

“Any money that we do get at the moment just goes to cover the wages and the running.

“We don’t have any money to look at our infrastructure.

“I want to do so much more.”

Mr Tunstall attended Doveton Tech before receiving a scholarship to Haileybury.

“The area’s a part of what makes me,” he said.

He joined a bank after finishing school.

“I started my working career at ANZ just down the road at 155 Lonsdale Street,” he said during a chat at The Public’s Corner in Dandenong.

He stayed in banking for about 30 years.

“Then decided I’d had enough of pure corporate life, so to speak,” he said.

“It became more important to work with small and medium businesses that are emerging, which is why I started Thane.

“It’s a specialist brokerage.”

Mr Tunstall said Dandenong was “SME central” referring to small and medium-sized businesses.

“What I try to do is match the right provider for the client at the stage of life they are,” he said.

“That led me to Trish Keilty and Avocare a few years ago.

“I look at what she’s done and what she’s achieved with minimal support.

“The number of people that she helps, the number of people that roll through there every week, the charities it supports and the lives that that touches....

“We developed a friendship. From that we’re trying to put together a project called MAD, which is about making a difference.

“That’s about the support of people involved in business and also in the financial area in the Dandenong region to actually stand up and assist in whatever way they can and whatever form that takes.”

Neil Tunstall is making a difference for Avocare.

Mr Tunstall is teeing up functions for the coming months to spread the word.

“It’s one thing to hear about Avocare, it’s another thing to see it,” he said.

“You look at the faces of the people that are working on the floor and they’ve got purpose.”

Minister lobbied on new station

By Casey Neill Calls for a new Dandenong South train station have reached the Transport Minister.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said she received a letter regarding the proposal for a station at the South Gippsland Highway and Princes Highway junction and passed it onto Jacinta Allan for consideration.

The Journal received an anonymous email touting the idea as an alternative to reopening the former GM Holden station due to lack of access to the residential areas.

The writer said the station would service Doveton, Eumemmerring, Endeavour Hills and the Dandenong South factory district and make residents less car-dependent.

“Attempting to persuade anyone to give up their car would be extremely in unpopular,” the email said.

“However, persuading them to use it a little less often is not such an impossible task.

A Brisbane man will be reunited with his grandmother’s Rolex watch after falling victim to a Gumtree scam.

The man listed the watch on the online listing site for between $4500 and $5000 and mailed it to the interested buyer after being sent a Paypal receipt.

Unbeknown to him, the receipt had been forged and the money never arrived.

The Nigerian scammer had asked the watch to be sent to a Melbourne address before it was moved on, which is where Dandenong police picked up the case.

They were able to track down the intermediary mule and got the watch before anything else happened.

Detective Senior Constable Dean Hedge says most of the time police aren’t able to locate the goods, but because the watch was one of a kind, it made things a bit easier.

“I rang him and the poor bugger broke down, he was emotional over it and we’re just arranging to send it back,” Det Sen Const Hedge said, after contacting the owner of the watch.

The City of Greater Dandenong is seeking expressions of interest for people to join its Positive Ageing Advisory Committee that will advise the council on aged care issues and policy.

The committee will also help the council to establish a Positive Ageing Plan for the area.

People with an interest or experienced in aged care, policy, program development, and planning in the Greater Dandenong area are encouraged to apply.

“I’ve never done driver training, I just get out there and go,” Daniella said.

Phillip Island Go Karts is open every day of the school holidays, so visitors have until 8 October to make their mark, and there are daily prizes to be won.

Each day the fastest competitor will win two 10-minute go kart sessions.

Those who set the fastest time of the two week school holidays and beat Daniella’s 47.419s mark and bolt to the top of the podium will be graced with the title of Phillip Island’s Go Kart King or Queen and win two 10 minute sessions for themselves and two mates.

With state-of-the-art seats and pedals fitted, the go karts can be custom fit for drivers, but competitors have to be 12 and over 140cm in height to drive.

Go karting at Phillip Island is super fun for adrenalin junkies through to novices.

Drivers can race the clock or one another and push out a series of hot laps in their quest to set the day’s fastest lap.

Lap time print outs are provided for each racer.

Times can even be posted to a driver’s own Facebook site, allowing any top gun to enjoy maximum bragging rights.

The go kart track is open from 9.30am until 5pm every day of the holidays. No bookings required.

Go kart sessions are run in 10 minute blocks, starting at $35 for a 10-minute session, $60 for two 10-minute sessions and $80 for three 10-minute sessions.

Veterans find a new, rugged way

By Helen Velissaris An ex-army Land Rover has taken on the most extreme off-road racing tournament in Australia thanks to the help of the Dandenong Cranbourne RSL. The Young Veterans group sent a team to Broken Hill in NSW to enter the seven-day Outback Challenge.

They had to navigate deserts and rivers, sand dunes and large boulders as they make their way across the rugged course.

It is the first time members of the Young Veterans team has entered the competition, and with their own ex-army Land Rover.

They have worked on the car as a therapeutic group activity and now find their handiwork going up against Mad Max style monster 4WDs. Co-Founder of the Young Veterans Scott May is under no illusions of their chances but has been buoyed by the interest in the vehicle.

“We’re essentially entering a donkey in a Formula One race but there have been nothing but encouraging words for us,” he said in a Facebook post from Broken Hill on 23 September.

He said that it was not about winning but getting out there and giving it a go.

The Young Veterans is one of 33 teams entering the race which was due to finish on 29 September.

The group was founded by Scott and his brother Chris after they returned from their deployments in the Middle East and found a disconnect with the older veterans and their ‘contemporary’ counterparts.

The group was started under the auspices of the Dandenong RSL and has been closely connected to the community.

The RSL even pitched in to buy three of the ex-army vehicles to be shared by RSLs around the country.

On the way up to NSW the team stopped at schools, community centres and RSLs to talk about the needs of young veterans and their experiences.

“We’ve helped them get a start, but they’ve done all this themselves,” President of the Dandenong sub-branch John Wells said.

“They’ll meet the challenges brilliantly ... just don’t break the car, Scotty.”

For Scott, the symbolism of the trip has been on his mind.

“We are taking something that the defence force has deemed past its serviceable life and we’ve repurposed it,” he said.

He said veterans should take on the same attitude.

“We want you, as veterans, to not just crawl up into a ball and just fall away in life, we want you to repurpose yourself.”

100 years ago 4 October 1917 Dandenong Methodist Sewing Guild For the six months ending 5 September, 100 garments were made for the Red Cross - 12 paper quilts, 114 new garments, 18 parcels and several articles of leftover clothing for the Home Missions in Melbourne.

Donations made to Livingstone Homes for children with the balance of funds kept in hand for buying material to start next year.

50 years ago 3 October 1967 Don’t panic Dandenong City Councillor A. Gately believes that complacency is a greater threat to prosperity of Dandenong shopping centre than the establishment nearby of a regional centre.

Concerted action and steady progress for

the next few years would assure Dandenong’s future.

Regional shopping centres were the result of both a lack of parking facilities and of road congestion.

The main way to meet the threat is to stress the advantages of shopping in a traditional centre and to eliminate the disadvantages.

The advantages include more human and personal treatment of customers.

The major disadvantage to shoppers is they have to travel blocks to get from store to store and cross streets with a heavy flow of traffic.

20 years ago 29 September 1997 $16.5 million goes on gun returns More than 1800 guns were turned in at the Dandenong Firearm Collection Centre last week.

The figures taken from the week ending last Friday showed a huge jump from the previous weekly average of 260 firearms.

As the gun amnesty deadline draws closer, long queues were seen outside the Thomas Street centre, with gun owners waiting up to two hours to hand in their weapons.

Dandenong looks certain to be the busiest centre in the state with the latest available figures showing that it had processed 38,000 firearms and handed out more than $16.5 million to gun owners in compensation.

Dandenong Collection Centre manager Mr David Smith said the wide area the centre was catering to explained the high return rate.

“We cover a huge area. You’ve got all of the Mornington Peninsula and then also the Gippsland area because the Sale centre has not been open all the time,” Mr Smith said.

The gun amnesty ends tomorrow at 5pm after which people in possession of illegal firearms could be hit with hefty fines.

5 years ago 1 October 2012 Urban starkness ‘crisis’ An award-winning landscaper says our taste for native greenery in streets and public places is a turn-off for people.

Wes Fleming, director of Flemings Nurseries, helped design a public garden in the $1 billion Somerfield housing estate in Keysborough, which was officially opened last week.

When complete, the 120 hectares of former market gardens and wetlands will have about 2000 houses.

About 20 per cent of it is expected to be open space.

Mr Fleming took aim at the common practice of installing native-grass wetlands at open space in housing estates.

“It attracts snakes, it’s not inviting to people nor is there any connection to the landscape.”

Engineer worked to build sports What’s In a Name delves into the fascinating stories and personalities behind some of the city’s bestknown street names and locations. This week the Journal looks at Shepley Oval in Dandenong.

WHAT’S IN A

The sports oval at the top end of Pultney Street officially became the Harry Shepley Oval in March 1953.

Shep, as he was known, died suddenly on 7 August 1952 at age 57.

His death “robbed this district of one of its finest citizens, and leaves the whole community with a sense of deep personal loss”, the Journal reported at the time.

Later that month, the Dandenong Cricket Association (DCA) at its annual meeting unanimously adopted president Frank Storan’s suggestion that the Dandenong Council should name a new oval in Mr Shepley’s honour.

Dandenong Council, with approval of the Sports Council, in November 1952 decided to give the name to the Pultney Road sports ground.

NAME The official naming took place during the afternoon tea interval in the DCA finals on 21 March 1953.

In a tribute following Mr Shepley’s death, the Journal said no man had done more for the advancement of sport in the district.

“No man devoted himself so unstintingly and unselfishly to so many worthwhile community-projects - in fact, his very willingness to serve undoubtedly took its toll on his health and hastened the end.”

The piece revealed that Mr Shepley’s home was on the corner of Clow and Foster streets.

He was born at Balmain in New South Wales and was a ship’s engineer.

He saw service with the Royal Australian Navy through World War I and after the war went into the

commonwealth shipping line as a second engineer.

Mr Shepley came to Dandenong in 1926 to open a dehydrating factory.

Four years later, Swallow and Ariell took over the project and up until his death Mr Shepley was one of the firm’s most valued employees.

He was the first DCA secretary and later became its president and a life member.

He followed the same path at the Dandenong Baseball Association and was also a past president and founder of the Victorian Province Baseball League.

Mr Shepley founded and served as president of the Dandenong Sports Council, too.

“Thanks to his foresight and enthusiasm this shire has more and better sports grounds than it otherwise would have had,” the Journal reported.

The Community Youth Movement had his enthusiastic backing, he was a valued member and a past president of the Dandenong District Hospital Committee, he was a member of the Mechanics’ Institute Committee, and of the Dandenong Agricultural Society.

A Keysborough goat milk business has expanded into a second site in the suburb.

NuLac Foods, owner of the Caprilac goat milk brand, intends to install a sachet and can-filling line in the Bridge Road space to pack the goat milk powder it makes at its milk-drying facility.

It will be expanding its range into goat infant formula products this year.

“It’s an exciting new step in our journey as a food producer in Australia,” CEO and owner John Gommans said.

“The market for goat milk products is growing in Asia and we have strong demand from customers to move into formulated products given the goodness of goat milk, which is well known for its digestive ease.”

The company has its own goat milk farms in Gippsland, including the popular Gippy Goat Cafe farm at Yarragon.

In August last year, Mr Gommans told the Journal that he and wife Penny Gandar started the business in Australia in 2005.

“We started off in goats in 1980-something in New Zealand, but our main business was dairy cows,” he said.

“It was all a bit early. We allowed that to lapse.

“Then we started off seriously again in 2000.

We came to Australia in 2005.

“We flew 500 goats over in a plane from our New Zealand farm. We bought this factory and a farm.”

A 500-year family history in the trade preceded Mr Gommans’ foray into farming.

He’s proud to be continuing the tradition that a recently traced family tree dated back to 1470.

“We have 12,000 dairy goats ourselves and then we have another eight independent suppliers that supply us milk from their farms,” he said.

“Our foundation is in goat milk products.

A trip to China could inspire a waste-to-energy plant in Greater Dandenong.

Earlier this month, a delegation from the council checked out alternative methods for disposing of household waste to see how they could be applied locally.

“We believe a waste-to-energy facility would sit comfortably in our industrial zone,” Mayor Jim Memeti said.

The Waste to Energy Study Tour included Cr Memeti, other councillors and council officers, a Greater Dandenong industry representative and members from the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group and Mornington Peninsula Shire.

They visited five waste-to-energy treatment plants in China, met with senior staff and looked at how the plants had been integrated into the surrounding communities.

Cr Memeti said China was leading the way in this area with efficient and proven technology and sound environmental measures in place that were far superior to Australian and European standards.

“As a council we are committed to taking a lead in this area and believe visiting modern facilities and gaining a first-hand understanding of how these technologies function is an important step moving forward,” he said.

He said a plant in Dandenong would provide additional energy to the grid, reduce the need to build additional electricity generating infrastructure and would offer an alternative to landfill.

Cr Memeti said the council believed there were enormous benefits to introducing the technology to Melbourne’s south-east.

“The council will continue to work with the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group, along with other councils to share the benefits of this type of technology in our region,”

Voices for art The Art of Hearing Voices project is designed to create a sense of inclusion and interaction between voice hearers and the general public.

Couple backing Kokoda learning

By Casey Neill A Keysborough couple has installed solar panels on a Papua New Guinean school.

Trek 4 Education Kokoda founders Mark and Julie Capper made the journey to Kagi Elementary School in the highlands of the Kokoda Track in July.

“As with our previous projects, we ask the village leaders and school teachers what they would require in the next 12 months,” Mr Capper said.

“So this was part of their wish list from last year.

“Last year we didn’t have the opportunity to do the solar power, but we did build school desks.

“We normally do projects every two years but the Bendigo Bank gave us a grant this year so we were able to go back.”

Instead of walking into the jungle the Trek crew used a helicopter.

“We also donated two laptops with speakers and a printer,” Mr Capper said.

“It was a bit of a win-win because we hired an electrician who grew up in the village. He put it all together.”

He said the PNG education department supplied all school teachers with USB drives loaded with learning programs.

“A lot of those learning programs were around singing,” he said.

“They couldn’t access that until we put the solar panel system in.

“With the extra speakers the whole class could hear and sing along.

“They learn to speak English.

“It’s very special.”

Mr Capper said arranging the projects could be frustrating.

“When you actually arrive in the village and you do these things, you just can’t help but have a tear in your eye,” he said.

The team received a welcome song and gifts when they arrived.

“It’s just magnificent,” he said.

“While I was in Papua New Guinea we received a letter of appreciation from one of the councillors of the village.

“It was great to be acknowledged by the local government.

He plans to return to PNG next September and is seeking a new wish list from a different school.

“We’ve been concentrating on this one particular school. They are scattered throughout the track,” he said.

“We’ll put some emails out and messages through Facebook over the next few months and find out what’s required and take it from there.

“I met with some people from a group over there that are helping out the families along the Kokoda track with school fees.

“We’ve decided we will sponsor one child next year with school fees.”

The Cappers are moving to Cairns in November where they’ll be only an hour’s flight away from PNG.

“We can fly over there just for a day,” he said.

The Cappers and 10 other people made the inaugural Trek 4 Education in September 2014.

“Many Australians use their trek to raise money for causes back home - all very worthy - but most people forget that the people of the Kokoda Track area also need our help,” Mr Capper said.

They made their second journey along the Kokoda Track in August and September last year, delivering educational supplies to schools along the way.

One in 12 children in Papua New Guinea dies before their fifth birthday.

“Kids that survive past the age of five are confronted every day with the daily struggles of living in a Third World country and this is even more exaggerated in rural areas,” he said.

Mr Capper said the country was rebuilding schools and training teachers but still lacked basic supplies.

“The kids along the Kokoda Track are direct descendants of the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels and it is very well-known that our Diggers received muchneeded support and comfort from them during the Japanese attacks in 1942,” he said.

Voices heard for Third World’s deaf children in call to action Dandenong workers tucked into sweet treats to support deaf children in developing countries.

CHEP hosted a fund-raising bake sale on Thursday 14 September for Deaf Action.

The Pakenham-based organisation helps deaf people to gain the education and life skills they need to overcome their disability and live productive lives.

Beaconsfield man and Deaf Action founder and director Neville Muir said donations provided education, skills training and job opportunities to break the cycle of poverty and discrimination.

CHEF donated $1946 earlier this year towards Deaf Ministries International’s (DMI) College and High School for the Deaf, based in Davao in the Philippines, including $746 from a staff bake sale.

That donation helped to upgrade kitchen and dining facilities at the Davao college, which is home to about 90 deaf students.

“Part of the donation enabled two Davao College teachers to travel to Australia to visit a number of schools for the deaf in Melbourne,” Mr Muir said.

“They hope to observe, gain ideas and also collect materials that will help them with their work in Davao, especially among the younger children.”

Mr Muir previously told the Journal that there was a widespread lack of understanding about deafness in developing countries.

we visit where parents didn’t even know there was such a thing as another deaf child,” he said.

“You see lots of sad cases of kids being misunderstood and just becoming kitchen slaves.

“There are many parents who don’t know how to communicate with their own kids because they’ve never learnt sign language.

“It means that they often give up on trying to communicate with their families.”

Mr Muir’s involvement in the deaf community started when he took part in a school holiday church club in Echuca during 1965 and met a deaf boy.

“This boy became my inspiration for working with deaf children,” he said.

“I got hooked and deafness became a real fascination.

“I became involved with different aspects of the deaf world and trained to become a teacher for the deaf.”

Having worked at a university in Japan, Neville used his overseas connections to launch his own churches for the deaf in Inchon, Korea, starting with just four children in 1979.

Deaf Action has since expanded to education and employment transition programs and assists deaf children in 21 countries, some from kindergarten through to college.

It funds four schools in the Philippines, Myanmar and Kenya, and supports up to 18 schools worldwide.
