Ute in ram-raid By Brendan Rees Police believe a ute stolen from Cranbourne South was used in two local ram-raids early on Friday morning. Police say the grey 2013 Ford Ranger was stolen sometime between 11pm on 2 September and 5am on 3 September, during a residential burglary on Sweet Wattle Drive, Cranbourne South. Two men are alleged to have broken into Pearcedale Hardware after ripping the front doors off the BaxterTooradin Road store, using a fourwheel drive, just after 2am. The men then entered the store and allegedly stole a number of items which included whipper-snippers, blower vacs and chainsaws. Owner of Pearcedale Hardware store Adrian Scialpi said his store was extensively damaged, with the bill tipped to top $7000. “We are really, really disappointed at the damage that they caused in the shop. Not only what they stole, but the damage was quite extensive,” he said, adding a door frame was ripped from the rear brick wall. “They’ve ruined doors. They’ve ruined stock fixtures. We’ll probably have to write off about $2000 worth of stock because now it’s unsaleable. And that’s on top of a couple of thousand dollars’ worth of stock they’ve actually stolen - mainly power tools and power gardening. “The mess that they made in the store was incredible. A lot of the shelving they tipped over to break-in was full of paints and varnishes and they’ve hit the deck and exploded." Mr Scialpi said a lot of stock was coated in varnish and would have to be thrown in the dumpster. “We’re going to have to write it all off. It wasn’t a nice thing to get woken up with in the middle of the night.” Continued page 3

Age positively in the City of Casey The City of Casey’s much-loved Ageing Positively Festival is back again and Council has an impressive line-up of activities to keep residents over 55 busy this October. The festival will kick off with a launch at the Lynbrook Community Centre on Monday 2 October where former Olympian swimmer Dawn Fraser will be the keynote speaker. It’s back to school By Brendan Rees Hampton Park’s historic schoolhouse - now revived as a Men’s Shed - is set to receive a facelift after being saved from bulldozers last year. Restoration works for the 95-yearold timber building will start in October following its relocation from Hampton Park Primary School to Marjorie Eastick Reserve in April at the expense of the Education Department. Works are set for the extension and restoration of the school building with a new kitchen, store room and accessible toilet to be added, including a heritage-style, all-access entry ramp. Casey Deputy Mayor Damien Rosario said following a public tender process, the contract for the restoration of the school building had been awarded to construction company Mancon Projects Pty Ltd. He said preparatory works had been undertaken but the main restoration works would begin next month and be completed in February 2018. “The Hampton Park Men’s shed is a unique opportunity to bring members of our community together to connect in positive way while preserving an important part of our heritage.” “This is a fantastic example of council stepping in to provide an essential community facility which would otherwise have been lost forever and to retain Hampton Park’s oldest building for future generations

Given the building was historical, he said council was now investing to get it up to scratch and retain it as a Men’s Shed, which was “most important.” “It was just the timing, a bit of luck as well and a lot of hard work but we got a really good result. We’ll be able to retain the building and provide a facility for Hampton Park to be able to use it,” he said. He said the people who built it were very well-known families in Hampton
Park, adding Casey councillor Wayne Smith and himself “jumped in” to ensure the building was not lost forever. “Councillor Wayne Smith and I worked really hard to get that going and the community was backing it. Their support as well was also heard. It was a really great effort. A lot of people are very excited about this opening.” “The Men’s Shed will be right next door so if anyone feels sentimental about missing the old schoolhouse they are most welcome to have a look.”
Secretary of the Hampton Park Men’s Shed David Maxwell said the refurbished Men’s Shed would be a “huge milestone” for the community. “We’ve been waiting to get a Men’s Shed in Hampton Park for eight years. It’s not a big building but it's good enough for us to get started with and grow within the community,” Mr Maxwell said. “I’ve got up to 65 members on the books for the team to go in there. Not all of them have signed up of course, but they’ve voiced their interest of the Men’s Shed.” Currently working out of the community workspace behind Arthur Wren Hall in Hampton Park, Mr Maxwell said the men’s group looked forward to being able to use the historic building seven days a week. “I will be a dedicated building where they can go down there and socialise and to build hobby toys and things like that for kids. “We’ve got a lot of equipment ready to go in there. We’re just waiting for the amenties block to be added onto it with new toilets, a bathroom and kitchen and storage area.” “We’ll be able to do the gardening and make it really nice. It is a historic building and we do appreciate that we’ve got the opportunity of growing in that area.” “Once we’ve got the Men’s Shed we’ll have a monthly function where people can go there and have a meal and catch-up together.”
Giving voice to the victims By Brendan Rees Victims of crime will find support for their healing journey in a forum supported by City of Casey. Led by CEO of the Forget Me Not Foundation Janine Greening, victims will hear from police, victims of serious crime and passionate advocates for changes to the judicial system. Ms Greening said the forum, to be held Sunday 8 October at the City of Casey Civic Centre in Narre Warren was an opportunity for the community to learn about the untold truths about crime and its consequences. The forum will host speakers from Crime Stoppers, Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse, and Casey Neighbourhood Watch as well as Australia’s Domestic Violence expert Anita Bentata. Ms Greening, also a victim after her mother was sexually assaulted and killed by two boys aged 15 and 16 in 2000, says she will talk about the consequences of youth offenders. She recalled a time she received a phone call from a
young man, who talked about his struggle to move on in life after being callously attacked one Saturday afternoon when he “was minding his own business.” “All he wanted to do was to go shopping and he got bashed up. He’s got kids. He owns a business. And he just went to go down the street, and now he was afraid to go back to work.” “It’s about being vigilant and it doesn’t mean it’s going to stop something. Sometimes it can if you’re aware of your surroundings and who’s around you.” Ms Greening says the forum will be about community safety and a place where people and victims of crime can learn of solutions and uplifting stories of survival. “When you actually hear from people that have been there, you learn the different processes. It’s the education. It’s about awareness.” “It’s people telling their stories. Then people are getting the information, the messages, to
be more aware and vigilant. For example, you don’t go walking around, you know, how a lot of young people walking in the dark with earplugs listening to music and anyone could be behind them.” Hosted by the National Victims of Crime Awareness Week and Forget Me Not Foundation, there will also be talks on domestic violence, community safety and missing persons. “There will be victims of domestic violence and we’ve got people who are authors and adult survivors of sexual abuse,” Ms Greening said. Casey's Councillor Amanda Stapledon said the forum would acknowledge victims of crime and police who see so much violence and crime in the community. “The day will be a commemorative and uplifting event,” she said. The forum will run from 1pm to 4pm on Sunday 8 October at the City of Casey Civic Centre in Narre Warren (20 Magid Drive, Narre Warren).

Shots fired at house Police are investigating a firearms incident which occurred in Cranbourne North on Tuesday night. Officers were called to an address in Josephine Avenue about 11.10pm, after reports that shots had been fired into a house. Fortunately no-one was injured during the incident. A ballistics expert will examine the damage to the home.
Stolen ute ram-raid From front page He said he received a call just after 2am from his security company and arrived at his store just before 2.30am, adding: “They had already gone - the damage was done.” “I think they spent about three minutes in the shop in total. They weren’t here for long. They caused an enormous amount of damage. “We’re on the way to getting it fixed. We managed to trade a bit today. The damage is at the back end of the store so we can still function at the front, but we’ll work into the night just to get everything tidied up and get all the damaged stock out so at least tomorrow (Saturday 23 September) we’re ready to trade.” Mr Scialpi said he might be out of pocket for some expenses but hoped his insurance company would help him. “If they cover us for the damaged stock we’re happy. That’s all we ask of them.” He said the store was broken into almost a decade ago. “Since then we’ve had a really, really good run. Just got a bit of a shock overnight when this happened.” He said it was hard enough to get ahead as a small business. “We work our guts out to make a living and these guys with absolutely no regard just do what they do. “I know I’m not only speaking for myself but there’s literally hundreds of thousands of small businesses out there that have been exposed to this sort of criminal behaviour. “It’s happened multiple times every day and every night. What do we do to stop it? We are starting to get really sick of it.” Cardinia Crime Investigation Unit detectives believe the stolen Ford ute was also involved in a burglary at Kooweerup early the same morning. Investigators have been told two men in a ute drove through the front entrance of a Station Street liquor store about 3.50am. The men tried to break into a cigarette cabinet but were unsuccessful, however they took two cash tills and a number of cigarette lighters. The pair then fled in the vehicle, which has since been identified as a 2013 model Ford Ranger, graphite grey, with a front bull bar, snorkel and spotlights. Police believe the vehicle may be bearing stolen plates ACD-798 and have released an image in the hope someone recognises it and may be able to provide information on its whereabouts. Both men were masked and wearing light-coloured workmen’s pants, boots, gloves, zip-up jackets and caps at the time of the incident. One of the males had a heavy build and the other, a medium build. Investigators have also released images of two men they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries. Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Taking centre stage in front of a big audience was nothing new for 17-year-old Rebecca Zahra, as she prepared for her third State Schools Spectacular. Rebecca was one of 3000 young performers from more than 200 government schools in the musical extravaganza performing more than 40 songs. The spectacular also included dance, music, song, puppetry and magic at Hisense Arena on Saturday 16 September. Rebecca, 17, was one of 16 principal dancers at this year’s spectacular after performing as a principal dancer in 2016 and ensemble dancer in 2015. “I am very excited but also very upset because it will be my last year as I am in Year 12. This has been my best year and the friendships have been great,” Rebecca said. The Lyndhurst Secondary College student and college captain performed 10 routines on the night, seven of which were in heels. Rebecca always dreamed of becoming a professional dancer since the age of seven but after completing VCE, she hoped to become a qualified myotherapist and run her own clinic in supporting dancers with muscle therapy and rehabilitation. Rebecca was training every Sunday for seven hours with four of Australia’s top choreographers; Deon Nuku, Yvette Lee, Troy Philips and Tarra Papulous at the Ministry of Dance in North Melbourne. During the school holidays, rehearsing was ramped up to seven hours a day from Monday to Friday. “Rehearsals are going well. We are more prepared this year than any year before,” she said. The state government has set ambitious targets of more students reaching the highest level of achievement in the arts - ensuring kids are happy, healthy and resilient.

Guide to graceful ageing The City of Casey’s annual Ageing Positively Festival will run again throughout October, offering more than 100 events and activities to inspire, connect and entertain residents aged 55 and over. Held each year in conjunction with the Victorian Seniors Festival, the festival is a celebration of Casey’s older residents and their ongoing contribution to the municipality. City of Casey Mayor Cr Sam Aziz encouraged residents aged 55 and over to check out the program and get involved. “This year’s Ageing Positively Festival will kick off with an official opening and expo on Monday 2 October, featuring a talk from swimming icon and Olympic champion Dawn Fraser and a range of health and lifestyle exhibitors and demonstrations,” Cr Aziz said. “There are more than 100 other activities and events, information sessions and opportunities for older residents to join in, meet new friends and learn something new. “You might like to learn some helpful self-defence tips, get moving with some Zumba, line dancing or table tennis or exercise your creativity by taking part in a calligraphy,

There are several members, he said, that were no longer able to participate in the sport they loved due to disability, injury, age or ill-health. “Wheelchair basketball will give these members of the community the opportunity to get back involved, keep active and in some instances, rise through the ranks of wheelchair basketball as a

pathway for the Paralympics.” Casey Basketball will be running training programs and competitions every Tuesday at Casey Stadium. “We strongly encourage everyone to get involved. A new wheelchair basketball program in Casey is inspiring people of any age and ability to chase their dreams of becoming a Paralympian. Run by Casey Basketball at Casey Stadium, sessions will include teaching individuals how to pick the ball up, shoot from a sitting position and even try to dribble down the court. Founder of Helping Hand Is Here and Your Ability, Michelle Jankovic introduced the idea of bringing the sport to Casey four months ago after being inspired by her son, who plays competition wheelchair basketball. “I am very passionate about individuals with medical challenges succeeding in whatever dream they have. My 15-year-old son being born eight weeks premature, resulting in cerebral palsy, really gives me the drive to make wheelchair basketball a natural addition all basketball clubs should run,” she said. She said anyone was welcome to play: “People who use wheelchairs all the time: paraplegia, spina bifida, and spinal cord injury - anyone who uses a chair. "People who use wheelchairs some of the time: lower limb amputees, cerebral palsy, incomplete spinal cord injury, muscle weakness. And people who don’t use chairs at all: unrepairable ligament damage, knee or hip replacement, fractures to the knee or ankle joint, multiple joint fusions, knee or ankle reconstructions, anyone with a disability or injury.” Casey Basketball Association spokesperson Ashley Szalek said the Casey Basketball Association was excited to bring wheelchair basketball to

In response to your article 21 September “Councillor sings different tune post–election”. Cr Flannery’s apology to seven councillors and the CEO was not a smart move. Cr Flannery in making his public apology has totally let down the 2500-plus residents that voted him in to do a job. In doing so he is now kicking goals against his own team of supporters. I do not accept Cr Flannery wrote that speech because of the wording used. I have never heard Flannery use the words “keyboard warrior” - I have heard this expression used by Sam Aziz. I believe Cr Flannery did not write his speech but Aziz did. I refute his statement “I’m not in their pocket” - he has demonstrated that he is, he is now enjoying all the perks of a councillor and does not want to rock the boat. In taking this stand he has demonstrated that he is not only in their pocket but happy to be there - now that he has told the truth, residents cannot rely on him to do the job that he was elected to do. Flannery never wrote the letters while president of the CRRA - he preferred others did the writing, as others were more skilled. The letters were written by the CRRA media team, ex-councillors Lynette Kelleher and Brian Oates, with some involvement of Brenden Brown. The ex-councillors did not want it known that they were associated with the group, hence the title media team, Cr Flannery only signed the letters. Cr Flannery admitted that he had changed from his original agenda and changed sides - it is fair to say he has totally let down the 2500-plus that put him there. He should do the right thing and publicly apologise to the residents who put him there and then resign from the position. I now believe that was always his real intention once in council. Cr Flannery stated he'd “lost his friendship with me as a result of my letter”. I emailed Flannery prior to submitting my letter to the News, stating, "I no longer wished to be associated with you because of his disgraceful apology to council.” As for Arvo Talvik's statement, he wasn’t surprised that Flannery changed his mind while “on the inside” and he didn’t see anything wrong with Flannery changing his mind on a few things - those few things were his entire platform for his election promises. Talvik said if he was elected to council, “I’d expect I'd be in the same boat”, a very silly statement from a president who is supposed to be working on behalf of ratepayers to oppose the council on waste, overspending, rates, and once in council change sides, and admit that he would. Arvo dismissed my views as that of a “lone wolf”. I would say to Mr Talvik to get his facts right before making any statements. I have a large support base and I am speaking on their behalf - this can be confirmed by Cr Flannery, as he is well aware of the support I have, which put him where he is today, which he will no longer enjoy. It is far bigger than that of the membership of the CRRA - the CRRA was never a threat to council, just a minor disturbance. That has since changed - under the leadership of Mr Talvik they are not even an annoyance. Rex Flannery told me six weeks ago that he did not expect the CRRA to last longer than February/March next year. I have had so much support from residents since my letter was published I have been asked to set up a petition to present to the Minister to sack Cr Flannery. Not good enough Casey's Cr Rex Flannery states in his interview with Cam Lucadou-Wells (“Councillor sings different tune post-election, Berwick News, 21 September), that he has done the right thing by reversing his decision to unconditionally support Casey Mayor Sam Aziz and CEO Mike Tyler. Because they are really both quite pleasant men and Mike Tyler now has a five-year contract. Casey Residents and Ratepayers’ President, Arvo Talvik, claims he would also act the same if he was elected to council and that he supports Rex Flannery. As a CRRA financial member, however, I believe that both men appear to have a good case of historical amnesia. CEO Mike Tyler was appointed under a

Tyler and council approved a $250,000 “bonus" to senior Casey management for writing a report to the commission for more rates money from residents when they had an underlying budget surplus of $33,000. The Casey FoI officer refused to disclose to me who had received the bonus money. Casey Council has also supported Cr Crestani’s call to develop a sister-city link with Israel. This is a country that has governed in breach of United Nations International laws and is responsible for war actions against the Palestinian people. Cr Rex Flannery, and other councillors, are enthusiastic supporters of military conscription for young people, but strangely enough none of them have bothered to lead by example. This is Casey Council’s leadership model - “Don’t do as I do, do as I say". Casey Council has also, without any opposition from president Arvo Talvik, and Rex Flannery, made a decision this year to reduce the time allowed and number of words permitted by residents when accessing public question time on council. Casey has an extreme right-wing council that is supported by Cr Rex Flannery and CRRA president Arvo Talvik. But this is hardly the kind of council that can lead the local community into a future characterised by democratic traditions and values. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.

Socially speaking On Wednesday 20 September the Cranbourne-Berwick News Facebook Page shared a story of Casey Council’s decision to press ahead with an “antidrug injecting room strategy” - despite doubts that a trial will be approved by State Parliament. In a meeting on 19 September, councillors over-ruled a council report that recommended deferring the strategy. They also voted to lobby the State Government for more drug and alcohol rehab and mental health services in Casey. The story brought forward some strong opinions from readers and here is how they reacted online. Kelly Il: Harm minimisation, safe use environments, teaching safe injection techniques, individual and community education and engagement are proven ways to relieve this health and financial burden. Principal stand By Brendan Rees It was back to school for Casey Cardinia Libraries CEO, Chris Buckingham, but not as you might think. Donning his principal’s mantle and adding a flexible timetable, Mr Buckingham was guest speaker at Cranbourne South Primary School on Thursday 7 September. Mr Buckingham said he spent time with students and teachers in classrooms and special programs; and met with the school leadership team to discuss topics of interest. “I went away feeling quite inspired. They were just so positive and so energetic, but in a really challenging work environment,” he said.

All the right moves By Brendan Rees Hampton Park Primary School hosted the Casey Regional Chess Championships for the sixth consecutive year on Friday 1 September. Hampton Park Primary School chess coach and co-ordinator Crispian Deacon said there was a high standard of chess played, with two of the top 12 schools in Victoria attending. Hampton Park Primary School finished fourth while the junior primary team consisting of Tarik, Bowen, Dhanushka, Josh and Alvin excelled to qualify for the state finals at the end of October. Hampton Park’s chess captain, Miniya was the best-placed Hampton Park student for the day, finishing 16th overall, and was also the secondplaced female player. More than 700 primary schools across Victoria began the year vying for a place in the state finals in November. The competition is run by Chess Kids, a competition run and owned by former Australian champion David Cordover. “Hampton Park Primary School has a recent proud history in chess competition. There is great interest within the school with over 100 students involved in chess club each year,” Mr Deacon said. “Hampton Park made the Primary School State finals in 2013 and 2014 and the Junior Primary School State finals in 2016 - placing the school in the top thirty chess playing primary schools in Victoria. When you consider over 700 schools compete, this is an extremely good effort,” he said. Mr Deacon said chess was one of the most powerful educational tools available to strengthen a child’s mind. “It’s fairly easy to learn how to play

Victory has an orange belly By Brendan Rees A local wildlife sanctuary's efforts to save the incredibly rare orange-bellied parrot have been so successful, they now have more in captivity than exist in the wild. Pearcedale’s Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park's has been announced as a finalist for the Premier’s Sustainability Awards, following a campaign to save the rare bird. The sanctuary is one of 29 outstanding finalists across 10 categories in contention for The Premier’s Sustainability Awards, now in its 15th year, that recognise and celebrate Victorians who are leading the way to a sustainable future. Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park director Michael Johnson said his team’s commitment to saving the “critically endangered” orange-bellied parrot had “been a fantastic experience and one we are very dedicated to.” He said the park built a 20-aviary complex, with a free flight area for up to 40 breeding orange-bellied birds, which has the potential to produce up to 40 offspring. Last summer, he said, the aviary produced 25 offspring from 12 pairs, helping to save the endangered species from extinction. “We have had great breeding success with it. We were involved with a release down at
Werribee earlier this where we released four birds.” “To give you an idea, there’s less than 20 in the wild currently in the whole of the world,” he said. Mr Johnson said being announced as a finalist for the sustainability was unexpected: “It’s nice to be recognised. As a private organisation we invest a lot of time and money in it. It’s hard work sometimes.” He said the sanctuary faced its biggest challenge in releasing enough birds to build up a population in the long-term. “Obviously they face a lot of challenges in the wild. They migrate every year to Tasmania. They breed in Tasmania in the summer and they come back and live along our coast in the winter, so it’s a pretty tough gig for them.” “It’s what we want to do, so we’re happy that we are able to do it and contribute.” Mr Johnson said there were 43 orange-bellied parrots at the sanctuary - some of which are either in the breeding facility or waiting to be released in Tasmania, which he hopes will occur this summer. “Some are waiting to be transferred to another wildlife park and some of them are on display - so we’ve got about five birds on display so people can see them.” He said his team were building new aviaries as the orangebellied parrot approached
breeding season. “You look on a species like a Rembrandt. If you destroy a Rembrandt, it’s gone forever. There’s nothing there to replace it. Individual species are the same - once they’re gone, they’re gone. And we’re losing a lot more species now than at any other time in the history of the world basically.” Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio congratulated each finalist for their exemplary work. “Each finalist is a testament to the world-class sustainability work we do in Victoria and the prestige of the Premier’s Sustainability Awards program.“ “We’ve had the broadest cross-section of entries in the award’s 15 year history and it’s great to see such ingenuity and innovation in the way Victorians approach sustainability,” she said. The winners from 10 categories will be announced at the awards ceremony on 26 October. Two winners will be selected by the Premier for the Premier’s Regional Recognition Award for a finalist who has demonstrated notable benefits for regional Victoria and a Premier’s Recognition Award for an organisation which showcases exemplary innovation and determination in overcoming obstacles in sustainability.

Memory loss challenges By Dr Lorraine Baker

This year promises to be an even more exciting event. The three huge pavilions promise to be packed full with some magnificent displays ranging from the smallest of flowers to large
trees from 20 nurseries as well as over 60 home-related products such as spas, beds, furniture, furnishing, decor, building ideas, etc. The surrounding outside area will have 12 caterers, entertainment, childrens activites, and another 60 great exhibits which include more plants, outdoor furniture, garden features, mowers, caravans, hot houses,
tools, and a myriad of other products and ideas. Tino Carnevale and other experts will be giving great gardening advice up on stage each day. All this adds up to a great day out for $10 for adults with children under 16 free and all the money raised will be donated back to good causes in the community.
As a GP for over 30 years, I have watched many long-time patients become older aged. In fact, I am reminded that I am approaching the older bracket myself by my deteriorating joints! However, the much more confronting issue for many of my patients as they age, are fears of loss of intellectual capacity, physical capacity and of loss of independence. As for all health issues, it is better to discuss these fears openly with your GP rather than become increasingly anxious or sad about them. There is so much more understanding nowadays of the capacity of older people to still make improvements in physical strength, improve balance (which minimises risk of falls) and in mental health and wellbeing. Changes in memory are the most challenging for all. Some decline in intellectual function with age - particularly in the speed of processing information - is normal. Losing track of items, difficulty seeing through a task to completion, difficulty following recipes or other complex instructions can be early clues to real memory impairment. It’s a good idea if you are 75 years old or older to discuss with your GP having an annual health assessment (the Medicare system has a special item for this) which includes a simple test of cognitive ability (intellect and memory). You do not need to wait until you are 75
to undergo the screening test - it can be incorporated into a consultation with your GP. However, if you are keen for that more comprehensive check-up, remember to ask for a longer appointment. When joints are damaged by ageing, many people respond by restricting exercise and becoming very protective of themselves, limiting their social and community activities. However, careful and consistent exercise regimes designed around an individual’s own physical limitations can be safely undertaken. Again, discussing options with your GP for referral to appropriate physical therapy for the right advice and supervision, can result in not only preservation of current physical capacity - but even substantial improvement. Retaining physical fitness and strength also assists with retaining good intellectual function - an added bonus.
Many of my older patients are an inspiration. Classes at University for the Third Age (U3A), CAE or in the community provide both intellectual engagement and a social connection, while many embrace information technology as an exciting tool to connect them to experiences, friends and family. So, if you are beginning to feel despondent that there is nothing you can do, please see your GP and discuss your current physical and mental health, and work together to assess what interventions will preserve your independence for as long as possible. Kings of the indoors By David Nagel From the back blocks of suburbia to the bright lights of Dubai - the Cranbourne Kings are having quite an impact in the highly-energetic and entertaining world of indoor cricket. Based out of the Cranbourne Indoor Sports Centre, the Kings have managed to claim both team and individual success on the local, national and international stage. The month of September - well it’s been one to remember for the Kings. The women’s team earned the title of national champions after defeating the Springvale Scorpions in the National Indoor Cricket League grand final held at Springvale earlier this month. The commanding 128-68 victory caught the attention of national selectors too, with captain Nicole Martin and Dani Montague selected in the Australian team for the World Indoor Cricket Federation World Cup, held in Dubai. And joining them on that flight was team-mate Maddie Dixon, selected in the all-conquering Australian 21-under side. The World Cup was completed last weekend with Australia making a clean-sweep of the titles in the men’s and women’s open and 21-under divisions. And the men’s teams from Cranbourne - they’ve had their share of fun too. The Kings claimed the title of Super-League champions this year,
defeating a powerhouse cast from Croydon (90-55) in the Division 1 grand final, while the Division 3 boys defeated Northcote (74-33) to make it a great season for the club. One of the driving forces behind the success, Trevor McGeachin, said the Kings had thoroughly deserved everything that had come their way. “We’ve built this up from the lower grades with a lot of young players coming through the ranks,” a proud McGeachin said. “We only had one player in the men’s-one side over 30. Guys have really bought in this year; last year we made some hard decisions, a few noses were put out of joint, but we needed to do that to get the enthusiasm back, it’s very sweet now. “This is the first men’s premiership we’ve had in Super-League in 11 years and it was great for the women to step up in the first season of the national league and become the best team in the country as well.” McGeachin said there were many reasons for the improved results, but new managing director Jannette Dunlop had certainly played her part. “Jan has been amazing for this place,” McGeachin said. “When she first started she asked ‘What do we need to do to get better’, and she has followed all of those things through. We get extra court time, Jan organises marquee games between teams and she’ll open the centre for us at all sorts of strange hours.” Sandy Davies, a key player in the

all represented the Cranbourne centre well. We lost a game we shouldn’t have lost to Queensland, but apart from that we combined very well as a team.” And for Dunlop, well she’s just extremely proud of everyone involved with the Cranbourne Kings. “Really proud, but it’s the people that make the club and the trophies are just a really nice bonus,” she said. “We started slowly, but we built
momentum and that can happen when team’s gel and everyone sticks together. We’re only a small centre but we’re building a great atmosphere, great friendships, and it really does feel like family. “If anyone is thinking about joining, please come down ... we will make you feel like family and give you all the support that you need. Everyone gets a bat and a bowl; it’s a really great way to play sport.”
Sperling’s hungry for action on the pitch By Nick Creely There is an insatiable hunger within Lachie Sperling and his Casey-South Melbourne team-mates ahead of the Victorian Premier Cricket season, which gets underway on 7 October against Ringwood. The skipper - who saw his Swans bundled out of the 2016/17 finals race by eventual premiers Fitzroy-Doncaster in a semi-final - is itching to get on the park after a gruelling pre-season. “It’s sort of crept up on us a little bit - the season starts in just over two weeks, but we simply can’t wait,” Sperling said. “We know that we have to work even harder than last year to get back towards playing finals - the training standards have been really, really good. “We’ve got plenty of games into our players now, so hopefully they just continue to develop for us going forward. “It was exciting to play finals last year, but we start on zero points again now, so we want to get off to a good start.” Under new coach Prabath Nissanka - a former Sri-Lankan international cricketer - and highly-credentialed
specialist coaches Naveed Nawaz and Jayde Herrick - the Swans have kept things relatively simple, focusing on developing an already stable list. There hasn’t been a huge transition with Prabath, he already knows us and our game - there’s been no drastic change, but it’s been more of our senior players taking on leadership roles with our younger players,” Sperling said. “Along with Naveed and Jayde, they’ve been really good too - Naveed’s messages are really clear, he doesn’t try to change too much, but he’s a really good person to talk to about technique and mindset.” With a host of quick bowlers, such as spearheads Nathan Lambden and Brendan Rose, developing quicks Jackson Fry, Leigh Diston and Cameron Brown, as well as a strong contingent of batsmen such as Devin Pollock, Luke Manders, Sperling, Michael Wallace, Ryan Eaton, Jordan Wyatt and Dylan Hadfield, the Swans aren’t suffering from a lack of options. “Our depth is really important to us; it makes blokes hungrier for runs and wickets - it’ll be pretty similar to last year with virtually the same group (for Round 1),” Sperling said. “We’ve also got James Long, who has done a bit of stuff with the Vic

I really enjoyed my time at Narre Warren, a tough place to coach with such a rich expectation on success. “I want to thank the majority of players for backing me to the hilt and I think we got the very best out of the group.” Magpies president Stuart Stephenson - the man who
nominated Black for the Coach of the Year award - said the decision to not meet Black’s demands was a difficult one. “As a club we were very happy with Heath’s professionalism and the way he presented the club to the external world,” Stephenson said. “But the club has reached a fork in the road in regards to the social club facilities we have pending, which will be crucial to the future sustainability of the club. There are funds we will have to designate to those facilities, so we made an offer to Heath that wouldn’t compromise the club’s position going forward. “Unfortunately we couldn’t agree to terms, but it would have been irresponsible of us to make an offer we couldn’t fulfil. Coaching is part of Heath’s occupation and we wish him well in taking his coaching career to a higher level.”

Narre Warren and its coach of the past two years, Heath Black, parted ways just four days after sharing the pain of grand final defeat against Berwick in the South East Football Netball League senior decider. The former Fremantle and St Kilda star met with the club’s executive on Wednesday night last week where he requested a two-year extension to his contract. But Narre Warren - which has a serious financial commitment to a new social facility being built at Fox Road - refused to meet Black’s requests, leaving him on the outer and considering his options for 2018 and beyond. “I’m gutted to tell you the truth,” Black explained. “I have a great relationship with the club, but we put friendships aside and discussed the hard facts in regards to the business relationship. I was hoping there would be a way around it, and hoping to coach the club for the next two years, but we were poles apart to be honest.” Black, regarded as one of the hardest working coaches in community football, said he was proud of his two years at the club. “I couldn’t have done anymore in regards to the amount of work I have put in and I can walk away with my head held high,” he said. “The club nominated me for Coach of the Year this season, which I won, and gave me a strong grading in a recent review, so the coaching side of things was obviously not an is-
HAMPTON PARK BOWLS Finally, after the third attempt, the Hampton Park midweek bowlers have at last had a practice game. With the previous two being washed out, this time they got the opportunity to be able to play Willow Lodge. It was clear to see in the first half that the players were a lit-
tle on the rusty side but things improved for both sides in the second. The Parkers finished the game in front and this should give them some confidence going into the first pennant game. The Saturday practice games got off to a good start with the first - against Cranbourne - producing a string of
even results, while the second against Cranbourne RSL - saw the Parkers go up a notch and put in a strong performance. Three sides from both clubs filled the greens and it looked like everyone enjoyed the game. The big test for the Saturday sides will be when they have a practice game against Upwey/ Tecoma.

Affordable and fun to boot Although the streets of Australia’s major cities are becoming increasingly congested the demand for small cars such as this week’s review, Renault Clio, has steadily declined, a victim mainly of the growth in sales of compact SUVs. Despite this there is serious competition within the market segment led by Hyundai Accent, Mazda2 and Toyota Yaris. High comparative pricing meant that Renault Clio has barely registered on the sales radar in recent years. This is a great pity because this stylish little French car has plenty to offer. The current, fourth generation, Clio has been on sale since 2012 but can still turn heads especially after a mid2017 facelift that’s given it a stronger look. More importantly prices have been cut at the same time as extra equipment has been added to significantly improve the value equation. Clio’s model names have also been re-aligned to match those of other Renault models with the more elaborate names such as Expression and Dynamique being replaced with, in ascending order of price and equipment, Life (from $16,490), Zen ($19,990), Intens ($22,990) and GTLine ($22,990). Driveaway prices range from $18,490 to $25,990.

Renault Clio is cute in a very French manner. Clio has a slim grille that greatly expands in its centre section to frame the Renault diamond-shaped emblem. The doors are deeply sculpted in their lower areas and the side profile of this five-door has the look of a three-door coupe thanks to concealed handles at the rear. Clio’s rear end flares in slightly at the side to give a muscular look. Exterior tweaks for 2018 on the entry-level Clio Life include body coloured door mirrors and handles, as well as chrome on the boot lid strip, sill inserts and radiator grille. There’s also a new 16-inch flex wheel design. Clio Zen sees the addition of Renault’s new-style C-shaped frontal lighting signature including Pure Vi-
sion LED headlights, front fog lights with chrome surround, gloss black treatment for the lower rear bumper trim and two-tone 16-inch Pulsize alloy wheels. The chrome theme continues with window trim added to Clio Intens which has 17-inch Optemic alloys. The sporty GT-Line gets extra bling through a Renault Sport rear spoiler, satin grey door mirrors, front and rear bumper inserts and 17-inch Serdar alloy wheels. New features inside Renault Clio Life include pushbutton start, automatic dusk-sensing headlights and automatic windscreen wipers with rain sensor, rear view camera, rear parking
sensors, rear power windows and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The second-level Zen adds front parking sensors and satellite navigation with voice control. The GT-Line gets Renault Sportinspired blue highlights for the upholstery, aluminium sport pedals, GT-Line badging, leather handbrake handle and satin grey for the door mirrors. Boot size is a reasonable 300 litres and the rear seatbacks fold down flat although they do sit at a higher level to the boot floor. In that position there is 1146 litres of cargo space. Clio gets the maximum five-start ANCAP safety ratings, it comes with six airbags, stability and traction control, ABS with brakeforce distribution, parking sensors and a reversing camera. A seven-inch touchscreen is used
in all models. Audio systems rise from a basic Classic sound system in the Life and Zen to 3D Arkamys Auditorium system in the Intens and GT-Line which also get the option of Bose premium sound. The Renault medium navigation system is standard in Zen with Intens and GT-Line getting an R-Link navigation and multimedia system. All have voice control. Two engines are available, both turbocharged petrol units. The only variant with a true manual gearbox is the Life with its six ratios mated to a three-cylinder 0.9-litre with 66 kW of power and 135 Nm of torque at 2500. All other models get Renault’s EDC dual-clutch automated manual and a four-cylinder 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 88 kW at a low 4800 rpm and an impressive190 Nm of torque from 2000 revs. The combination of significant price cuts and extra equipment that came with the recent upgrade should now mean that Clio’s outstanding looks, driving enjoyment and five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty really should soon have its competitors looking over their shoulders.
