By Derek Schlennstedt The CFA is warning of a long, dry fire season and is urging Yarra Ranges residents to start planning now.

With parts of NSW already affected by bushfire, indicators suggest the fire danger period might be declared earlier this year, as conditions point to a dangerous summer.

The warning comes after Victoria experienced its driest winter since 2006, and Emergency Services Commissioner, Craig Lapsley, said the bushfire risk would now depend upon the rainfall Victoria received in spring.

“The severity of the fire season will depend on a number of factors, including the amount, location and timing of rain in the months leading up to summer,” Commissioner Lapsley said.

“The early forecast shows there is underlying dryness in some areas of the state, particularly across central parts of Victoria and across the east.

“While there is a lot of surface water, which means there will be grass growth and a healthy supply of water for crop growing, ground moisture has the potential to dry out quickly under dry and warm conditions.

“The level of risk ... will still depend on how much spring rain there is in September.”

Summer season preparations across the Yarra Ranges are already well underway, with local brigades and agencies undertaking planned burns.

District 13 Operations Manager, Don Tomkins shared Commissioner Lapsley’s concerns and said that even despite recent rain, residents across the region lived in a fire-prone area and therefore should always be prepared for the summer fire season.

“The information that we’ve been given indicates that we could potentially have an earlier fire season than traditional times, however we do live in a fire-prone area so it is about being prepared - there will be a fire season in some shape or form,“ he said.

“Fire agencies are already going into planned burning phases and obviously while we do this, private landowners also need to take responsibility and clean up their land.”

Though preparations may not completely prevent fires from occurring, improvements in facilities by the government ensures fires are extinguished as soon as they are reported to fire services.

“The biggest aircraft fleet we’ve seen, with more aircraft than previous seasons,” Mr Tomkins said. “It’s certainly beneficial ... aircraft can be dispatched at a certain trigger mark together with the brigade to get in there early, and hopefully assist us in getting on top of the fire early.”

With fire services playing their part to reduce fuel loads, Mr Tomkins said the onus was now on residents and said it was important for communi-

ties to work together and help one another and utilise the information available to them via the CFA websites and apps.

“We know there will be a fire season and it’s making sure we are all prepared,” he said.

“You can approach local brigades or our community safety department - our district can provide a lot of information to enable people to become prepared for the forthcoming fire season.”

Mr Tomkins said one of the most pleasing aspects of this year’s fire season preparations had been the Victorian Government investment in fire-fighting aircraft.

Overall, 49 aircraft will be on hand this fire season, including two large air tankers and two orange air-cranes - similar to the existing ‘Elvis’ Erickson air-cranes - will be part of the $13.42 million fleet lease this year.

Hearty jump More than 100 students from Billanook Primary School earlier this month raised almost $5000 to help the fight against heart disease.

The school joined hundreds of schools nationwide in participating in a jump-off for the Heart Foundation’s Jump Rope for Heart Program, with teachers and students showing off their skipping skills at the official Jump-Off Day on Friday 1 September.

Spare a thought for blues Victoria Police is calling on the community to take a few moments on Friday 29 September to remember the 150 of its members who have been killed while serving and protecting the community.

Among those honoured will be Senior Constable Tony Clarke, who was stationed at the Knox traffic unit, when he was killed at age 37 while conducting a routine traffic check at Launching Place.

On Sunday 24 April, 2005, Senior Constable Clarke was on patrol on the Warburton Highway, where it is alleged he intercepted a vehicle and was about to administer a preliminary breath test, when at some point the driver managed to gain possession of Senior Constable Clarke’s gun.

The driver fatally wounded Senior Constable Clarke, then stole the police car and absconded.

The driver’s body was located in nearby bushland, where he had appar-

ently committed suicide.

Former Monbulk Sergeant Mark Knight said he worked alongside Senior Constable Clarke and couldn’t speak highly enough of the Victoria Police member.

“He was just one of those special ‘fellas’ and a ripper of a policeman, too,” Sergeant Knight said.

“He was a larger-than-life character. Tony was one of our colleagues and a great friend.

“I wasn’t with Tony at the time, but

was certainly in and around the traps.

It hit many of us really hard.”

Sergeant Knight said it was important to reflect on those who had paid the ultimate price for their service.

“The day 29 September was also the day I graduated from the academy, so it has extra special meaning for me.

Blue Ribbon Day is a great way to acknowledge our fallen comrades,” he said.

Meanwhile, there are other ways for Victorians to support the Blue

Ribbon Day. Badges of Remembrance and other items will be on sale through police stations and retail businesses, including all Woolworths supermarkets.

Memorial services will be held around Victoria.

Firies’ big day is in readiness The time is right to start preparing for the upcoming summer fire season.

And what better way to prepare than through a visit to The Patch and Kallista’s Open Day, where you can gain expert advice from the brigades’ members, as well as enjoy a family fun day out.

On Saturday 7 October, from 10am to 2pm, at the Kallista Fire Station (located on Kallista-Emerald Road), residents will get the chance to meet and greet with their local brigade members.

This is your change to receive expert advice on property preparation, personal fire plans, and burning off requirements and safety.

Also, check out the topographical three-dimensional map of Kallista and surrounds to better understand fire directions under wind conditions, and possible impacts on residents.

But don’t forget to enjoy the day, too, with plenty on offer for the kids.

Captain Koala will make a visit, while the children can check out the fire tankers in the station.

There will be activities such as a largescale game called ‘Hoses and Ladders’.

A gourmet sausage sizzle will cap off a great day.

Briefly Rocks hurled at cars Rocks and other paraphernalia are being hurled at cars driving through Emerald.

Emerald police report that in the early hours of the morning rocks have been hurled at cars in the main street of Emerald, near the Puffing Billy tracks.

Numerous cars have already been damaged by the flying projectiles, and police are appealing for witnesses.

Senior Constable Andrew Macreadie, at Emerald police, urged offenders to think of the consequences of their actions.

“They need to think of the consequences ... if they go through a window they can cause some serious injury,” he said.

These grants were part of $4 million in community grants funding for 110 projects across the state under the Biodiversity On-ground Action Program.

The grant is to allow for works to be done in the creek, which forms the northern boundary of our school.

This involves removing large woody weeds as well as climbing plants threatening to overwhelm the site.

The project will contribute specifically to the conservation of the upper reach of the Ferny Creek and help return the creek to its natural state.

The state

Victoria Police Highway Patrol units around the state will replace their Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore V8 pursuit cars with a fleet of turbo diesel BMW 5 Series sedans from next year.

Victoria Police has confirmed that BMW will provide up to 80 of its 530d sedans to be used as highway patrol cars, starting early 2018.

With the end of local production of the Falcon last year and the Commodore reaching the end of the line next month, police divisions across Australia have had to source new cars for the highway patrol.

BMW is one of the few car manufacturers globally to make vehicles specifically for police work. Police in Germany, Italy and the UK also use BMW sedans for highway patrol duties.

The BMW has acceleration and braking to match the Falcon and Commodore, yet uses half as much fuel as a Commodore V8 and has more advanced safety technology.

BMW has stripped the car back to basics, and it is purpose-built for highway patrol work.

Footpaths to connect all over: it’s in the program Cardinia Shire Council has announced it will connect eight new footpaths throughout the shire, including around the Dandenong Ranges, as part of its 2017-’18 footpath program.

The program aims to complete many of the missing links in footpaths across local townships and add to the footpath projects being carried out in council-managed parks and reserves. Some of the projects include a gravel footpath from the service station in BelgraveGembrook Road, Gembrook to Station Street, to complete the pedestrian link from the town centre to Gembrook Recreation Reserve. Also, upgrading the existing gravel path in Macclesfield Road, Avonsleigh, between Belgrave-Gembrook and Fairway roads, which will improve access for all abilities in the township.

“Working through that list is a long-term priority for us, when we go through the budget each year.

“We know there are many footpaths that need to be constructed and existing ones that need to be connected in all townships.

“We are committed to delivering more and more kilometres of paths each year, so residents can move around their neighbourhood safely.”

Letters NBN wreckers Recently, with no warning as to when works would begin, our steep, unmade road was suddenly filled with a number of very heavy vehicles while they dug and drilled underground as part of the NBN works.

As a consequence, our nature strip and shared driveway entrance ended up a muddy mess, with the road edging flattened completely.

When we asked the subcontractor about it being cleaned up and restored, we were told there was no damage. So I talked to the actual contractor representative, a nice person, but he could not act and needed to escalate.

Finally, we were contacted

by NBN twice.

The result was that as we did not have the foresight to photograph our road, nature strip and driveway before the works began, we were told it would be our word against theirs.

The moral of this story: If you see the diggers coming, make sure you have plenty of photos before they start dig-

ging and making a mess, otherwise you will have no chance of getting things cleaned up and restored.

It looks like it is up to me now to get out there with my shovel and rake and do what I can to repair the road edgings, and stop water cascading onto our nature strip so the beautiful native hyacinth orchids that we have nurtured over many years have a chance to survive.

One of the NBN values is ‘listens to and delights customers’.

Think of the others In relation to the article ‘Donkey death’, my heart goes out to Haydi Kubrak and May on the tragic theft and killing of May’s new baby foal (‘Mail’, 12 September).

Reading about how May was searching constantly for her lost baby, I was reminded of the millions of dairy cows who do exactly the same thing.

Each year, within hours of giving birth, their precious babies are stolen from them.

Some try to fight off the attackers, some try to shield their babies with their own bodies, some chase frantically after the transport, some cry pitifully and some withdraw in silent despair.

They all beg for their babies in language that requires no translation.

They bellow, they cry, they moan.

Some stop eating and drinking.

Some withdraw in silent grief.

Many continue to call for days and nights on end.

The dairy industry brings these babies into the world for one reason only - to immediately slaughter them and steal their baby food.

Please open your eyes to the cruelty of dairy.

Farewell to a little angel

By Peter Douglas and Wendy Williamson Family, friends and community members have continued sending out heartfelt condolences in the wake of the influenza death of an eight-year-old girl at Angliss Hospital.

Rosie Andersen, 8, was admitted to the Upper Ferntree Gully-based hospital on the morning of Friday 15 September, but died later that day.

In an effort to assist the family, a GoFundMe page has been set up - established by family friend James Bailey - which showed the level of compassion being directed towards the family.

The page encouraged members of Ausjeep to support the family, with the organisation being a big part in the life of Rosie’s father, Christian Brealey.

“His (Christian’s) family has suffered a loss this week, losing their precious Rosie Andersen to a simple flu in Melbourne,” the post read.

“As the family struggle to come to terms with this loss, we are hoping to raise some donations to show how much we care about Christian and his family, and ease some of the burden during this time.

“We know this would break the biggest and baddest of men!”

Christian replied to the post, thanking the community for their support.

“Words cannot describe the depths of our grief. We want to thank our friends and family and the broader community for all the messages of love and compassion,” he wrote.

In a statement released last week to News Corp, dad Christian Brealey went on to encourage parents to immunise their children against the flu.

“We are devastated by the loss of our beautiful, loving little angel,” he said.

La Trobe MP Jason Wood was another to send out his condolences last week, saying: “Heartfelt condolences go out to her grieving parents, family, friends and school community.

Thoughts and praise also to paramedics and hospital staff who cared for young Rosie.”

Rosie’s death came as part of what experts have said is an outbreak of flu, with Victoria’s public and private hospitals reaching emergency capacities.

About 13,000 flu cases in Victoria have been reported so far this year, nearly twice as many as last year.

The flu this month already claimed the lives of several elderly people at an aged care facility in Wangaratta.

Eastern Health Director of Emergency Services, Dr Peter Archer, told

the ‘Mail’ this region had seen a sizable increase in influenza-like presentations at its hospital emergency departments, including Angliss Hospital, Box Hill Hospital and Maroondah Hospital.

“For example, from 1 May to 14 September 2016 there were 3507 influenza-like emergency department presentations at Eastern Health hospitals.

This compares to 4804 influenza-like emergency department presentations from 1 May to 14 September 2017 - an

increase of 1297.”

Dr Archer said it was essential for people to be aware of flu symptoms.

“These include: fever, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, body aches, headaches, chills, fatigue and occasional gastrointestinal upset - diarrhoea and vomiting,” Dr Archer said.

Meanwhile, Eildon MP, Cindy McLeish, has announced a Coalition Government would provide up to $7 million over four years for free voluntary flu vaccinations for all Victorian children between the ages of six months and five years old.

“Given the terrible flu season we have recently experienced, the Liberal Party want to ensure that the youngest in our community are protected from harm. That’s why we are committing to funding flu vaccinations for children up to five years of age,” she said.

“Many parents do not have their children vaccinated against the flu, because of the cost. Funding the vaccine for young children will provide a strong incentive and clear message that the safety and well-being of their children is paramount and flu vaccinations are recommended.

“Influenza is a deadly disease, with thousands of Victorians suffering from it every year. Tragically, flu takes the lives of many elderly people as well as otherwise healthy young children who can be particularly vulnerable to the illness.”

Anyone unwell with flu-like symptoms should consult with their local general practitioner or get in touch with the Nurse-On-Call service (1300 60 60 24).

Bells of peace ringing out Developed in the hills, the song ‘Bells of Peace’ - along with the Federation Bells - rang out at Birrarung Marr for the International Day of Peace on Thursday 21 September.

The Dandenong Ranges Music Council (DRMC) took centre stage, as students from Tecoma Primary, Belgrave South Primary, Kallista Primary, Upwey High School and members of Vocallista, Tecoma Peace Choir and Southgate Singers, combined in a massed choir, singing the ‘Bells of Peace’.

The song was originally developed in 2015 through workshops with students from primary schools in the Yarra Ranges, with professional community music artist John Shortis.

In 2017, funding from Creative Victoria has supported the creative development of the song by choral arranger Kate Sadler and bells composer Karen Berger.

The Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Arron Wood, officially welcomed the choir and audience to the performance for the International Day of Peace.

“The City of Melbourne is proud to support events such as this, and the work of the Dandenong Ranges Music Council to commemorate and strengthen the ideals of peace within and among all nations and people through music,” he said.

“It’s so wonderful to hear our magnificent Federation Bells ringing out this song straight from the creative of minds of our young students.

Music is a wonderful way to teach children about the past and inspire them to lead the way for a peaceful future.”

Mayor of the Yarra Ranges, Cr Noel Cliff, was overjoyed with the performance and opportunity for Yarra Ranges to take centre stage in the City of Melbourne.

“The Bells of Peace song has reached new heights with the beautiful choral harmonies and bells composition,” he said.

Chair of the Dandenong Ranges Music Council, Ray Yates, said it was an exceptional day for community music and the DRMC. He highlighted the involvement in the choir of students from the 2015 project, ‘with our creative young people a confidence in our future blossoms’.

At the end of the song, the bells of St Paul’s Cathedral rang out to carry the message of peace far and wide.

Solar scammers Scammers who claim to be installing solar electricity systems have been active in the Dandenong Ranges region, according to Cardinia Shire Council.

The council has issued a warning to the public after reports the scammers were representing both the council and the Solar Savers program, which the council said was untrue.

Council’s Solar Savers program required pensioners who were interested in the program to initiate contact with Solar Savers first to discuss their eligibility.

Under the program, installation costs are paid for by council, then residents gradually pay for their panels over 10 years through a special rates charge.

Applications for the program are now closed.

Emerald Museum will finally receive the services of a dedicated museum officer, with the announcement lauded as a win for the icon’s long-term sustainability.

Since opening in 1981, the museum has been run by a committee of management and a dedicated team of volunteers, who will now receive muchneeded support in the day-today running of the museum.

The museum houses more than 3000 artefacts - including household items, photographs and agricultural machinery and continues to undertake significant research projects.

Cardinia Shire Mayor, Cr Brett Owen, said council recognised the need for additional resources.

“The committee of management and team of volunteers have done a fantastic job over the years, collecting and cataloguing the many artefacts that make up its valuable collection of local history,” Cr Owen said.

As centre manager Lyn Taylor explained, with the Seniors Festival quickly approaching, Belgrave South Community House host a number of programs which are targeted specifically at the over-fifties community.

“Our Cafe Club is a program where participants hop in the bus and go off on an adventure visiting local cafes for coffee, chat and investigating the area,” Lyn said.

“The drivers are regular volunteers and we thank them for their years of commitment to the program. The program is planned each term with suggestions from participants. There are two longer day trips each term. Last week the participants visited Werribee Mansion then took a side trip to Werribee Marina, Sanctuary Lakes and Point Cook.”

Lyn explained that the program was a great way for people to meet other like-minded individuals and address social isolation which she says is a growing issue among older people.

Cafe Club runs on Monday mornings, leaving Belgrave South Community House at 9.30am.

“We also hold Stronger for Longer which is our exercise program for older adults,” Lyn said.

“Our experienced, qualified fitness instructors lead participants through a series of exercises aimed at maintaining fitness levels and falls prevention.

“All levels of fitness are catered for and participants are individually monitored throughout the classes. Classes run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10am. “Some of the participants enjoy a social chat and coffee after the classes and a Christmas break-up is planned at a local cafe.”

60 years of The Cuckoo’s call A hills curiosity with a rich history, The Cuckoo will celebrate 60 years of hearty festivity this October.

See them to be inspired Inspiro is a local, not-for-profit organisation providing health services such as dental, diabetes education, dietetics, podiatry, physiotherapy and support groups for people in the Yarra Ranges.

Ashleigh Thomas is one of the podiatrists at Inspiro. She enjoys helping seniors with their feet and lower leg problems, especially treating issues related to chronic health condition like diabetes.

In the first two weeks of October, seniors can get a free 30-minute foot health assessment with one of Inspiro’s podiatrists.

Tracey Higgins has been a dietitian at Inspiro for many years, helping to provide practical advice about what to eat to stay healthy.

Tracey runs Inspiro’s Healthy Supermarket Tours, showing people how to read and understand food labels to choose healthy foods. On Tuesday 17 October, she will be leading the ‘Eating Well as We Age’ seminar at Inspiro and sharing healthy recipes and ideas.

Inspiro also offers low-cost dental services for pensioners and many group programs to help seniors stay in good health.

These include a 12-week falls prevention and balance therapy group titled ‘Steady as You Go,’ ‘Hip Health Knee Knowledge’ which is an education and exercise group for people suffering from hip and/or knee arthritis and finally ‘Older but Stronger’ a supervised gym circuit class for people over 60 years old.

Having recently moved to their new venue in Bayswater North, Ruccis Circus is now able to offer a huge range of classes for students of all ages and abilities.

Producer Chris Dockrill calls it a ‘hybrid film’ of the live show of the same name.

Mother-lode of disappointment

By Seth Hynes Mother! MA15+ Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem Mother! is an ambitious, beautiful and harrowing misfire.

A housewife (Jennifer Lawrence) becomes increasingly frustrated as her poet husband (Javier Bardem) invites droves of people to stay in their secluded mansion.

Mother! was both intriguing and aggravating from its first moments.

Much of the cinematography consists of hand-held camerawork combined with extreme close-ups, which makes the first half feel very artificial, and Mother! lacks a sane starting-point for the drama to truly catch us off-guard.

The performances are riveting, and Mother! generates an extremely unnerving atmosphere even before the morbid carnage of the climax,

but the intended allegory is very muddled.

Mother! is full of Biblical symbolism, with the narrative essentially presenting a stylised, condensed history of Christianity.

Representing God (through Bardem’s poet character) as a narcissistic artist obsessed with adulation isn’t a bad interpretation of the Old Testament God, and I initially took the ‘Mother’ character (Lawrence) to be a redemptive, empowered version of Lilith, a persecuted, little-known figure from Jewish folklore.

But director Darren Aronofsky has explicitly framed Mother as ‘Mother Nature’, with Mother’s distress and trauma symbolising our exploitation and destruction of the Earth. This is an abstract, contrived stretch, and is very incongruous with the often heavy-handed Biblical metaphor.

We’re ultimately left with a film full of bloody shock value and allegorical weight that, while morbidly captivating on the surface, says very little.

The game started off with both sides testing each other out and getting used to the windy conditions. Olinda had seven scoring shots to four but both sides only kicked a single goal in the first quarter and Olinda had a slim lead by three points. Olinda acclimatised to the conditions quickly and piled on 6.1 to only three behinds in the second term, and it looked like it was going to be a tough day for Woori Yallock trailing Olinda by 37 points at the main break. Wind or not, Olinda had no trouble and kicked another 6.5 in the third quarter to Woori Yallock’s two goals and the margin had blown out to 66 points at three-quarter time. Woori Yallock had no answers for Olinda’s dominance and could not get their game going at all during the day. The celebrations would have started early, but Olinda put on a clinic in the last term, holding Woori Yallock scoreless and peppered the goals with 5.5 to make the final margin a massive 101 points.

It all tightened up in the third quarter and it was a low-scoring one with only nine goals being shot, but Monbulk could not make any inroads into Woori Yallock’ lead of 10 goals. Woori Yallock played out the last term with an advantage of four goals, and have been the first team to beat Wandin since 2010 and to win their first ever B Grade premiership.

Motoring Win with Motorclassica
