By Casey Neill An artist has helped Keysborough students to celebrate their individuality and connectedness.

Keysborough Secondary College’s Banksia Campus, with Creative Victoria support, engaged Carla Gottgens as an artist in residence.

She worked with 160 Year 9 students on collaborative, creative and personally expressive project My Tree Our Forest.

Through a series of seven stop-motion films, students expressed a little of themselves, their heritage, their interests and their humour.

They sought and found connections between themselves and their peers and explored technologies to express these connections visually.

Campus principal Pat Boyd came across a Creative Victoria offer to connect schools with a practising artist for a unique project tailored to the school’s needs and demographic.

The school was looking to address a sense of social rebellion, disengagement or anxiety that often manifests in the Year 9 cohort.

It also wanted to actively promote a sense of unity and connectedness between its students, promote similarities and celebrate differences in a way that allowed students to be comfortable with who they were and how they fitted in with the bigger picture.

By Helen Velissaris There are renewed calls to make the South East green wedge zone permanently immune from over-development.

Activists and some Greater Dandenong councillors want to see the area have a permanent boundary, preserving its ecological landscape for years to come.

Defenders of the South East Green Wedge secretary Barry Ross wants the boundary set in stone to stop speculation on the zone’s future.

“At the moment there’s a lot of speculation going on land in the green wedge,” he said.

“Land bankers are buying large properties and speculating for it to be re-zoned because the value (of their property) goes up by a factor of 10.

“So long as that keeps happening there will always be uncertainty.”

Greater Dandenong Council voted to approve the subdivision of the green wedge in mid-2016 and Mr Ross said the council was lobbied strongly by land owners who wanted the change.

The issue has come to a head when it was recently revealed that Antonio Madafferi, who owns several hectares of land in the green wedge,

had been campaigning to allow his landholdings to be sub-divided.

He is a wealthy grocer and part owner of the La Porchetta pizza chain.

Mr Madafferi’s business, Madan Nominees Ptd Ltd, hired Mornington development lobbyist John Woodman to press Greater Dandenong Council on his behalf.

Man jailed for marrying 14-year-old schoolgirl

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 35-year-old man has been jailed for marrying a then-14-year-old girl in a wedding ceremony at a Noble Park mosque last year.

The man is the first to be sentenced in Australia under the federal offence of marrying a person under 16.

County Court of Victoria judge Lisa Hannan said a message needed to be sent to the community that such conduct was not tolerated.

She gave no weight to an argument that child marriage was permissible in the man’s cultural background as a Rohingyan Muslim asylum seeker from Myanmar.

“It’s simply not open for any member of our community to contravene our laws out of preference for some norm or even law that has absolutely no application in this country.

“We have one set of laws that govern all that choose to live in our community. Those laws must be upheld.

“In this case, the law is designed to protect our children including from themselves and the follies of their immature decision making.

“What you did was legally wrong and morally indefensible.

“The victim was entitled to a childhood you

took from her.” The accused and his co-offender - the then-imam at the mosque - had tried to “concoct a story” to cover-up the marriage on 29 September.

The marriage was recorded in a certificate, but wasn’t photocopied for the groom because in the words of the imam: “She’s very young”.

The accused was advised to tell people that they were just having a prayer.

The groom’s family had paid $1480 of gold to the bride as part of the custom, vows were exchanged and duties of husband and wife explained during the ceremony.

“There is no doubt that it was a valid marriage ... save for the victim not being of marriage age,” Judge Hannan said.

In a police interview, the man denied he knew the girl was 14 or that there was a marriage.

Judge Hannan noted the accused knew she was a schoolgirl, had seen her in her uniform and thought she was in Year 8 or 9.

One day before the marriage, he had been warned by child protection authorities about its illegality.

“Given what you knew it simply defies logic and belief that you would not have ascertained her age before the marriage, if that was not already known to you.”

The bride’s mother, who was present at the marriage, made no attempt to protect her daughter, Judge Hannan said.

“The only reasonable inference is that she actively supported the illegal marriage.”

Judge Hannan noted the accused’s early plea, his remorse, “negligible” risk of re-offending, and lack of any prior convictions.

The man was jailed for 12 months, with a six month $2000 good-behaviour bond - known as a recognisance release order.

He had already served 352 days in pre-sentence custody.

When released from jail in two weeks, he faces an “unclear” future as he’s transferred to an immigration detention facility.

The man was “stateless” having fled as part of a persecuted minority in Myanamar and could not be deported.

His bridging visa was cancelled after his recent arrest.

He will not be released from detention until issued with another visa.

In June, the co-offending imam Ibrahim Obervic, received a two year recognisance release order for solemnising the marriage.

If that order was breached, Obervic faced jail for two months.

Clean-up of charred remains continues after CBD fire

By Helen Velissaris Clean-up crews have been called in to safely remove asbestos and the charred remnants of two Dandenong shops that were engulfed by flames on 12 September.

The two shops and surrounding areas along Lonsdale Street in Dandenong have been cor-

doned off to pedestrians, with yellow ticker tape warning people of asbestos in the area.

A crew of three men in white protective suits, masks and googles were seen assessing the damage to the properties from a cheery picker on Wednesday.

The two shops, S.K Gift Shop and Supreme Enterprise grocers, suffered millions of dollars

damage when fire broke out around 1.30am. It took CFA crews 90 minutes to bring the flames under control.

A CFA spokeswoman told the Dandenong Journal that the fire has not been deemed as suspicious.

Shops around the area are still open for business.

The subdivision motion marginally passed 6-4, but was quashed by State Planning Minister Richard Wynne.

He has vowed to keep the green wedge intact as is.

“We cannot be clearer: The green wedge is off limits for inappropriate development,” a spokesman for Mr Wynne told the Journal.

“Labor promised to protect the green wedge from developers that want to attack it and that’s exactly what we’ll do.”

The council’s City Planning, Design and Amenity Director Jody Bosman said the council is open to green wedge zone development but only for appropriate uses that respect the environmental, cultural and landscape values.

“Further land subdivision and small lot excision are strongly discouraged,” Ms Bosman said in a statement.

“It is important that further development does not compromise existing agricultural businesses and does not restrict agricultural practices and activities.

Greens councillor Matthew Kirwan believes the whole area will change if development is allowed.

“It would totally compromise that land as green wedge,” he told the Dandenong Journal.

“This piece of land from an agricultural and ecological perspective is the most valuable part of the green wedge.”

Greater Dandenong councillor Angela Long said she was concerned that homeowners who bought around the zone for the lifestyle and scenery will be worse off.

“People who bought into the properties down there expected it to stay that way,” she said.

“We haven’t got much green wedge left, it seems to be encroached on all the time.

“I’d like to see it stay the way it is.”

Most recently, Greater Dandenong Council approved the DandyFresh application to develop a produce market in the green wedge-zoned land along Harwood Road.

Mr Wynne is currently considering the appropriateness and scale of the development and has asked the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning to provide him with advice.

A man accused of setting fire to Springvale’s Commonwealth Bank branch last year, in which more than 25 people were hurt, has been committed to stand trial after pleading not guilty to intentionally causing the injuries.

Nur Islam, 22, appeared at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 19 September over the incident on 18 November last year.

He faces 108 charges including arson and property damage by fire.

Police allege the Rohingya asylum seeker from Myanmar set himself on fire inside the bank and injured customers and staff when the fire spread.

Mr Islam’s lawyer told the hearing that his client did not dispute lighting the fire but said that he did not intend to injure anyone.

He was remanded in custody.

Looking Back 100 years ago Settling soldiers on the land In the Legislative Assembly on 28 August, member for Dandenong Mr W S Keast took part in the debate on the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Bill and is reported in Hansard as follows.

“After a good deal of experience of land settlement in this country, I have come to the conclusion that £500 is inadequate.

“A soldier may be settled on a block of land containing 150 acres, which cost £10 an acre, however it has to be cleared and fenced.

“You do not often find land that you can clear for £2 an acre, so that we may put down from £300 to £500 for clearing.

“It is evident that no soldier can effect improvements for £500.

“We all recognise what these men have done for this country and it is our duty to do

22 September 1997 On the right bus A Dandenong bus builder is on the brink of securing a $100 million Hong Kong contract which will generate 250 local jobs.

Volgen of Hammond Road has built Australia’s biggest double decker bus under contract by Hong Kong’s Citybus.

Handing over the key to the prototype on Friday, the Premier Mr Kennett said the bus was Australia’s ambassador and he felt certain it would win the contract.

“If this prototype is acceptable it will secure an order for 200 buses over the next five years.”

“This will secure 108 existing jobs at Volgren and expand its current workforce to 350.”

24 September 2012 Council holds ace over pokies rights Greater Dandenong Council say the Doxa Social Club has no special rights to set up a pokies den in central Dandenong.

As reported, Doxa has been in talks with the council to find a suitable venue for its 40 pokie entitlements.

The entitlements were bought at $20,000 a machine - a total of $1.16 million.

by Places Victoria as part of the Revitalising Central Dandenong project.

“We’ve looked at a number of possible venues,” Doxa Social Club general manager Max Williams said.

“We’d like to use the entitlement that we already hold in the City of Greater Dandenong.”

Tin Shed and window shopping The late Jack Johnson was the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city’s pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street.

and then came Hattam’s, a drapery and wool shop where we went to get wool and cotton for mum and grandma.

It had the most colourful display of skeins of wool and wooden cotton reels and it had one of those zinger things which sent the cash up to the elevated office and returned with a receipted docket and change.

Hattam’s was next door to the Albion Hotel and on the other side of the hotel was Mrs Wilcox’s Blue Bird Cafe and Cake Shop.

The Wilcox family had a cordial factory on

Railway Parade before it became the Europa Cheese factory. Next to the Blue Bird Cafe was Chandler’s Laundry, then Reg Stevens’ fruit and vegetable shop.

That shop was the first to have wooden shutters that completely opened back and revealed the whole shop to the street, instead of having fixed windows.

He also ran a market stall and sold only top quality produce.

Potter and Sons Butchers were next, then Mrs Johnston’s grocery store and Miss Pickett’s Coffee Palace on the Clow Street corner.

At the back of the hay and grain store the roof of the loading dock was high enough to take the lofty wagon-loads of baled straw and bags of chaff that Murph’s dad delivered from the canvas covered railway trucks and goods sheds at the rail siding opposite the end of Hammond Road.

When returning to the hay and grain store with a full load he got us to run alongside the

wagon and tell him if the high load was going to fit beneath the subway and the railway bridge on Cheltenham Road.

I think he had taken to many loads under that railway bridge that he could make the load, and he only did this to make us kids feel important.

There was another large corrugated iron building on the corner of Clow and Stuart streets where Murph’s dad delivered loads of baled straw and to a lesser extent baled grass hay.

That building was used as an extra store house for Mr Patterson.

When we went to this building and played on the stacks of baled hay we wondered what the two large concrete blocks with bolts sticking out of them were used for.

A number of years later we learned that that building had previously housed the generators for the first Dandenong electricity supply, officially opened in May 1914.

Sometimes if a couple of the horses were having worn-out shoes replaced by the farrier and blacksmith, we would have to wait a bit longer before we could take the horses along to the paddock.

The farrier worked in what is now called The Tin Shed on the corner of Scott Street and McQuade Lane, which ran to the back of the Albion Hotel.

While we waited we would visit the shops along that top end of Lonsdale Street.

On the Scott Street corner was the Bank of Australasia.

By Thursday 21 September more than $297,705 had been donated by more than 2250 people.

The family has been overwhelmed with the support.

“Obviously nothing can replace this loss but to know that our heartache is shared by so many, to know that Shaun’s sacrifice has been recognised, is something we can hold to,” the family wrote on the page.

Most of the donations have been small from $20 to $100, with many using the platform to leave their condolences.

“We witnessed Shaun’s selflessness and bravery on that day,” Seamus Farrell wrote. “Words can’t express how sorry we are for your loss.”

Mr Oliver’s funeral was held at Springvale Botanical Cemetery on Thursday with friends and family gathering directly after the funeral at the social rooms at Rowley Allen Reserve, Keysborough.

Five arrested in bikie raids Two men, aged 25 and 30, and a 21-year-old woman, all from Dandenong, a 32-year-old Doveton man and a 32-year-old Narre Warren South man were arrested during raids linked to the Comanchero Motorcycle Club.

The arrests followed police raids on properties Melbourne’s south-east on 21 September.

Police executed warrants about 5.30am at properties in Everitt and Vivien streets in Dandenong, Power Road in Doveton and Lighthorse Crescent in Narre Warren South.

Six firearms, cash and drugs, believed to be cocaine and steroids, were seized at the properties.

Car theft and stabbing Police are investigating the attempted theft of a car and an assault in Dandenong on Friday 22 September.

The victim spotted two men in his Charles Street front yard about 11.20am who then turned on him and demanded his car keys.

He refused and one of the men pulled out a Stanley knife and attempted to get into the house.

The victim sustained injuries when he attempted to stop the man. The pair then ran off east along Charles Street.

Charges follow 11 armed raids A 32-year-old man has been charged with 11 armed robberies following three raids in and around Dandenong.

The raids were part of several such incidents in Melbourne's south-east.

They included an attempted armed robbery at a service station in Dandenong South at 9.35pm on 15 September, an armed robbery at a service station in Springvale at 1.27pm on 16 September and an armed robbery at a service station in Dandenong at 2.35am on 16 September.

He has also been accused of an armed robbery on an adult shop in Hallam at 10.26pm on 31 August.

Frankston police arrested the man after he allegedly committed an armed robbery at a service station on Seaford Road in Seaford at 12.35am on Sunday 17 September.

The Frankston North man was charged with 11 armed robberies, one robbery and one attempted armed robbery.

A Keysborough College student’s artwork will soon become a moving mural to promote social inclusion.

Nhu Lam won first place in this year’s Wallara Picture This art competition.

Wallara, a Dandenong-based disability support service for adults in the South-East, invited Keysborough College and Somerville Secondary College to participate this year.

It asked students to think about disability and paint or draw their interpretation of social inclusion.

Nhu’s entry was one of 85 artworks by Year 7 students at Keysborough, and will now appear on a Wallara bus.

The school displayed the artworks on Friday 8 September, and a judging panel visited to choose a winner.

Judges included Wallara director Anne Tierney-Roberts, Wallara CEO Phil Hayes-Brown, Ventura managing director Andrew Cornwall, Wallara ambassadors Camilo Zuniga and Donald Martin, and Navarone representative Nicole Neophitou.

The Keysborough and Somerville winners will be officially recognised at Wallara’s Annual Concert on Saturday 21 October at the Frankston Arts Centre.

A man has been left hungry and carless after being attacked after picking up his pizza in Dandenong.

The 51-year-old Dandenong man was walking back to his car near Clow Street in Dandenong on 12 September, pizza in hand, when he was attacked by another man.

His attacker threw him to the ground, stole his car keys and then drove off in his black Toyota Kluger.

The car was later found burnt out in a reserve in Hallam. The victim also lost his pizza.

“It was on the driveway, gone, smashed - so he didn’t even get his dinner, the poor fellow,” Detective Sergeant Craig West said.

Almost $300,000 has been raised for the family of a Noble Park man who drowned trying to save a stranger’s child on a NSW beach.

Shaun Oliver, 32, was on a business trip in Wollongong on 10 September when he dived into rough seas to rescue a 12-year-old child who had become caught in large waves.

The child was ultimately saved by a local surfer, but the father of three was swept out to sea.

The local community has banded around his grieving family and donated thousands of dollars via a GoFundMe page set up after his death.

Offender’s bail denied A registered sex offender who denied holding sexually-explicit online chats with a 17-year-old girl has been refused bail.

Richard Kelly had been accused of having the chats since January and while knowing the girl’s age at the time. During one conversation, Kelly sent an explicit video of himself, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 11 September.

He was on a community corrections order at the time. Kelly was also accused of failing to inform police after he moved out of a Doveton house and then a Dandenong boarding house in rapid succession in August.

He had also allegedly used up to five email accounts that hadn’t been disclosed to police.

On 10 September, Kelly was arrested by Greater Dandenong SOCIT police officers at a Carrum Downs friend’s place. Up to that point, police allegedly had been unable to locate him for more than two weeks, the court was told.

Kelly had also recently failed to turn up to his compulsory drug treatment appointments.

The bail applicant denied he’d had contact with the friend’s three children who lived at the address, informant Leading Senior Constable Allison Goff told the court.

He claimed that he’d visited the address for meals and showers, but had never lived there. “(Kelly) has been friends with this person for over 20 years and been attending the house on a regular basis for two weeks,” LSC Goff said.

“I find it highly unlikely (that he’s had no contact with the children).”

During a police interview, Kelly admitted to using about 0.15 grams of ice a fortnight - as well as cannabis - and to “occasionally” trafficking drugs, LSC Goff said.

In seeking bail, Kelly nominated a Frankston North address. It was found unsuitable by police due to the occupant’s criminal history as well as grandchildren visiting the address, LSC Goff said.

Defence lawyer Adrian Dessi said Kelly was not charged for any contact with children, other

than for not reporting his online chat to police.

It was the first time Kelly had been in custody and was entitled to the presumption of bail, Mr Dessi said.In July 2016, Kelly was registered on the state’s sex offender registry for life, the court heard.

Since then he has been serving a 30-month community corrections order for possessing child pornography and soliciting a child under 16 for sex. In refusing bail, magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he was concerned about Kelly’s lack of suitable abode, lack of available drug treatment and his “surreptitious” behaviour.

In all, Mr Vandersteen rated Kelly as an unacceptable risk of re-offending on bail.

Kelly’s use of unreported email addresses was “exactly how children can be approached by strangers in their own home”, the judge said.

“There’s only one email which uses his proper name. All the other email addresses give him some anonymity.”

Kelly was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 4 October.

Governor’s visit Victoria’s Governor took a trip to Dandenong and landed in Little India. Linda Dessau and her husband Anthony Howard met members of the Indian Cultural Precinct Taskforce, including Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti and Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams, on Friday 8 September.

The Governor wanted to learn more about transforming the Foster Street district into Melbourne’s premier Indian cultural precinct.

Cr Memeti said the taskforce’s aim was to create a shared community-led vision for the precinct. He said the council would receive $500,000 from the State Government’s Cultural Precinct Fund to develop it.

“Having the opportunity to meet with Ms Dessau is further confirmation of the State Government’s commitment to Dandenong and the growth and development of this precinct,” he said.

More than 85,000 people of Indian origin live within 20 kilometres of Dandenong’s Little India Precinct and more than 17,000 people from the Indian subcontinent choose to call the City of Greater Dandenong home.

A man has been punched for refusing to hand over his keys before having his car stolen in a Keysborough robbery.

The 27-year-old Springvale man was outside a house in Festival Crescent on the evening of 17 September when a white car pulled up and a passenger approached him.

The robber demanded the victim’s car keys and wallet. The victim was hit when he refused.

“The victim was punched twice to the head and dropped his phone and keys and the other male took them,” Detective Sergeant Craig West said.

The attacker took the victim’s silver Subaru Impreza and left him with minor grazes to his fingers and a cut to his bottom lip.

Police describe the attacker as being in his early 20s, with short dark hair and facial hair, and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Police say they are perplexed by a random attack on a young woman who was left bleeding from the head after being assaulted by three men.

The 21-year-old victim was walking her dog along Church Street in Keysborough around 6pm on 17 September when she realised she was being followed by three men wearing black hoodies.

They struck her several times in the head before she fell to the ground, where she was then kicked in the ribs.

Her attackers ran from the scene, leaving the victim on the ground bleeding.

Detective Sergeant Craig West said he doesn’t know what motivated the attack.

“Nothing was taken and no demands were made,” he said.

The woman was treated at Dandenong Hospital and received stiches to her head.

Her attackers remain on the run and are described as tall, wearing dark clothing and of African appearance.

Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

National Police Remembrance Day is on Friday 29 September.

For police officers and the community, this is a time we can pay tribute to the officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

For me, it is a day that causes me to stop and remember mates and colleagues who have been part of my life and career as a police officer but are no longer with us.

Ted Hubbard is one such person.

I joined Victoria Police in 1994 and my first ever night shift was working with Ted. On our first shift together we pulled over a car in Sandringham and the three blokes in the car came out fighting.

I can still remember Ted holding his own against two of them as we managed to get them into the back of the van and wait for back-up to arrive.

It’s in instances like this you rely on each other, look after each other, and from this we shared an ongoing bond.

Ted and I became friends outside of policing.

He was a fit and determined person and it was this determination that drove him to try for the Special Operations Group.

In June 1999, Ted lost his life during pre-selection for the Special Operations Group.

Ted often pops into my thoughts and I’m sure on Police Remembrance Day his family, friends and colleagues will be thinking of him.

Unfortunately in my career spanning 23 years, losing police colleagues is something I have come to terms with, although you never truly come to terms with the loss of a colleague before their time.

Tony Clarke was a squad ahead of me in the police academy.

After graduating we would often see each oth-

er in the gym and talk about our passion for the English Football League.

We would chat about the experiences we were having as new police officers.

Tony was murdered by a motorist he pulled over in April 2005.

This was such a tragic loss to his family, the community and Victoria Inspector Mark Langhorn.

Police.

He’s another person who touched my life and who I think about on National Police Remembrance Day. There are 159 police officers who have lost their lives in the course of their duty.

More recently we recognise the impacts of policing attributing to higher levels of police officers committing suicide.

Each and every police officer will know someone who has struggled with coping with the stress and pressures of policing and we all wish they were still with us today.

On National Police Remembrance Day, I will be remembering Edward (Ted) Hubbard, Tony Clarke and other colleagues and friends who have lost their lives serving the community.

I know that friends, family and colleagues of police hold National Police Remembrance Day close to their hearts and it is a day to pause, reflect and remember those police officers who are no longer with us.

- Springvale Botanical Cemetery will host an End of Day Reflection at its police memorial at 4pm on Friday 29 September.

Chase police car struck

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A highly-agitated driver, possibly suffering psychosis, rammed a police car during a hair-raising drive from Dandenong to the Mornington Peninsula.

Lisa Gergis, formerly of Noble Park, pleaded guilty at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court to an array of driving charges arising from the erratic, high-speed drive on 12 November.

The court heard that Gergis’s rapidly-approaching car struck a Honda hatchback from behind on Dandenong Bypass, causing the Honda to crash into the gutter about 5.30pm.

She turned south on EastLink, reportedly speeding at 171.5 km/h, prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Gary van der Poel told the court.

A Peninsula Link speed camera soon afterwards recorded Gergis’s car at 159 km/h.

Drivers reported the car being driven errati-

cally further south on the tollway, with the front bumper hanging loose.

A motorist pulled his car off the road to avoid Gergis’s vehicle, another watched the car weaving in and out of traffic at speed.

An hour into the drive, Gergis’s car collided with the front of a police Ford Territory in Cape Schanck.

She drove around the police vehicle, overtaking other motorists at high speed on Boneo Road.

Police terminated their pursuit due to safety concerns, LSC van der Poel said.

At 6.49pm, police brought Gergis’s car to a halt using stop sticks.

Gergis was taken to Frankston Hospital with minor injuries, the court heard.

In a police interview, Gergis said she had fled home scared and was not in a good mental state at the time.

Diagnosed with bipolar depression and schizophrenia, Gergis couldn’t remember crashing with

a police car or how her car’s front bumper became dislodged.

Gergis was also charged with making a false report to triple zero that her house had been trashed and ransacked on 29 November.

She told the emergency operator she was then going to hand in a gun to Clayton Police Station.

Police were then dispatched to the station, which was closed at the time but Gergis didn’t arrive there.

Gergis’s lawyer said the accused was likely to have been suffering a “level of psychosis” during the drive.

The accused was in an unstable mental state during the offences due to a dangerous situation at home, the court was told.

Gergis was convicted and sentenced to a 12-month supervised, treatment-only community corrections order, due to the seriousness of the offending. She was disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Mt Hira’s Year 6 to 9 classes showcased what they learnt through the Personal Best program for parents, teachers and peers on Thursday 7 September.

Personal Best was born to stimulate and engage students in an area of their own interest.

The showcase publically celebrated their work, from go-karts to dance routines, robots and music.

Refugee help is welcomed

By Casey Neill A Dandenong refugee support service has welcomed urgent help for asylum seekers in dire need.

The State Government announced an immediate $600,000 package on Saturday 9 September.

A media statement from Premier Daniel Andrews said that under changes the Federal Government had brought in without warning, about 400 asylum seekers in Australia for medical treatment would be transferred to final departure visas and expelled from the country.

They can stay on for six months but will have no income or housing support.

“These are some of the most vulnerable people in our community - we have an obligation to do whatever we can to support them and their families,” Multicultural Affairs Minister Robin Scott said.

A housing fund will cover accommodation costs and, where possible, keep people in their current accommodation.

Other cash will cover food, clothes, myki cards, medicines and case workers for those who need additional support.

“We’re making sure these families will have a roof over their head, clothes on their back and food on the table,” Mr Andrews said.

Friends of Refugee spokeswoman Sri Samy said she was very grateful to the State Government “who have chosen to be the first in Australia to take a proactive stance to support the most vulnerable people and for protecting the human rights of all people living in Victoria”.

She said the government was working with the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC), AMES, the Red Cross, and Life Without Barriers to offer support.

Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan also welcomed the move at the council’s Monday 11 September council meeting.

Thieves left a lasting impression during their second raid on a Dandenong electrical contractor in 24 hours.

The Dandenong Electrical Services owner, who did not want his name published, said his CCTV system captured three people cutting through a fence at his Brooklyn avenue factory in the early hours of Sunday 6 August.

“They were wearing balaclavas,” he said.

“You couldn’t make them out.

“We have scrap cable. We’re electrical contractors.

“They took about $3500 to $4000 worth out of our yard.

“We had about five or six tonnes of copper.

“Normally we’d try and donate it to the Salvos or something like that.

“That’s what we had intended to do with it this time.”

The owner said he had a feeling he hadn’t seen the last of the bandits.

“They turned up again at about 3am on the Monday morning,” he said.

“They had another go at it, but this time they didn’t wear balaclavas “I got really good facial shots of the two of them.”

One of them was a woman and the other man.

He reported the incident to police but contacted the Journal after the investigation stalled.

“When I spoke to police on the Sunday morning, he said copper theft happens every day in Dandenong, every day they have reports of buildings sites with the copper ripped out,” he said.

“This is not an unusual thing.

“But it was in a locked, secured yard.”

1000 books give a literacy boost The Dandenong West Primary School shelves have $16,000 in new books.

The Dymocks Children’s Charities (DCC) Library Regeneration program and the Andrews Foundation delivered the nearly 1000 picture stories and novels on Friday 1 September.

Ninety-six per cent of the 306 Dandenong West students have a language background other than English.

The program aims to help improve the students’ literacy skills, promote daily reading for pleasure and encourage all the students to participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge next year.

Teacher Kathy Watson said the donation would

provide a greater diversity of texts for students.

“We’ve purchased multiple copies of the same title so it’s going to mean that students can have greater access to book club books,” she said.

But it’s not just students who’ll benefit. Ms Watson said parents and preschool-aged children would also have access to the books.

“We are hopeful that in the future we will have a new library that will accommodate these books so that our whole school community can access this generous donation,” she said.

“When I applied for this grant we said ‘where are we going to put these books’ and my reply was ‘that’s a problem we want to have’.”

TWO-BEDROOM UNITS ARE TOP PERFORMERS

WHILE rents have remained relatively stable across the state, popular property types have experienced solid rental growth in the year to 30 June.

The latest REIV data shows twobedroom units recorded the state’s highest weekly rental increase, up 4.2 per cent over the year to $250 - a $10 weekly increase on the same period last year.

The City of Ballarat was the main driver of this growth with rents in the municipality also increasing by more than 4 per cent on June 2016 figures.

Wendouree was one of the top performing for investors of this property type with the weekly median rent increasing 15 per cent over the year to $230.

Rental growth for two-bedroom units was also seen in Lake Wendouree and Ballarat Central, up 9.6 and 8.3 per cent respectively to weekly median rents of 2 DANDENONG JOURNAL

Two-bedroom units were also in demand in a number of Bendigo suburbs, including Kennington and Eaglehawk where the median rent increased by more than 13 per cent to $250 a week.

Meanwhile, the statewide median rent for three-bedroom homes increased 3.4 per cent over the year to $300 per week.

East Geelong recorded one of the largest weekly rental increases for threebedroom homes, up more than 15 per cent over the year to $370.

Similar rental growth was also recorded in Bright, where the weekly median rent for a three-bedroom home is now $350.

The Dandenong-based disability enterprise held its annual general meeting at its Progress Street headquarters on Tuesday, 12 September.

President Russell Smith thanked Gateway’s customers, which include Greater Dandenong Council, Greenways Retirement Village and Pacific National.

Gateway workers have disabilities, and complete jobs including gardening, maintenance, woodwork, and processing and packaging.

Earlier this month Gateway learnt that its second-biggest customer, the City of Casey, had ended its eight-year relationship. This will cause a shortfall of about $180,000.

Overall income from work completed was up about $1000 to $876,988 in the 12 months to 30 June.

“More and more the government are saying that we have to get the funds from our customers,” Mr Smith said.

“It’s very important that we run Gateway as a business.

“Our employees not only work very, very hard, they enjoy Gateway as a place where they belong.

“It’s a family.”

Mr Smith said the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) involved huge amounts of bureaucracy, money and complex detail.

“It has affected us and will affect us more, particularly in the next couple of years,” he said.

“It’s something the board will have to really look into and investigate.”

In his written report he said: “Because each employee will be considered on a case by case basis it is unclear as to how many of our people

will remain at Gateway. We hope, of course, that most if not all of our employees will stay at our industry.”

Mr Smith told the AGM that Gateway needed new members and membership cost $5.

“That means you can vote on anything and nominate to be on the board,” he said.

“Think about our future.

“We’ll do it for our wonderful employees.”

In his written report, Mr Smith said the “enthusiasm, loyalty and work ethic of our wonderful employees continues to inspire us all”.

“To see the diligence of our employees, to hear of their superb work from our customers, to witness their cheery demeanour in the parks and gardens as well as in our factory is something that very few workplaces could emulate,” he said.

CEO Alan Warwick said the year had been a trying one for everyone involved in Gateway, particularly losing the Casey contract.

“That’s only given us another challenge to go on, to find something new,” he said.

The report from employee representatives Nicci Guttery and Peter Christoforou highlighted a graduation ceremony for certificate one in work education. “We have had some people that have celebrated a milestone of 20 years working here at Gateway and some celebrating their 10-year anniversary,” they said.

Board member and Peter’s father, Conn Christoforou, told the AGM that people didn’t realise the pressures the place had been under during the past year.

“They cover for everything and there’s never anything missed,” he said.

It is never too early to book a work Christmas party.

Christmas is a busy time with a lot of commitments, the last minute rush at work, finishing up school and other events for the year, planning holiday breaks or for those in retail - dealing with the Christmas rush.

Diaries fill up fast with functions - not only for those attending but also for the venues.

Budget and timing are also key factors in deciding which venue will be perfect.

Doing a bit of research is essential.

Check out the advertisements in newspapers for any good deals that might be around for favourite venues.

This is the time of year when venues will be looking for bookings, too, and will have announced any special packages that they have.

Talk to friends and colleagues about previous parties - word of mouth is always good but remember some venues may have changed hands or management teams and what was boring last year might be the place to be now.

Compile a list of favourite options to be circulated around the workplace, making sure the venue chosen has dietary options for all those attending and that there are public transport or other options available for getting home safely.

Bus maker articulates Japan deal A Dandenong-based business is delivering buses to Japan.

Volgren recently handed over two 18-metre long articulated buses - buses with the concertina-like centre - to operator Nara Kotsu Bus Lines in Japan’s south, near Osaka.

The relationship with Nara Kotsu is one of several Volgren has in the country, including an ongoing association with Japan’s largest bus operator, the Nishitetsu Railway Company.

That company ordered an extra five articulated buses last year.

Volgren has also forged partnerships with global trading company Mitsui and Co and Scania Japan to provide service and support for the vehicles.

“The delivery of the two artics for Nara Kotsu is the result of 18 months of hard work,” Volgren business development manager Jon Tozer said.

“There’s currently no local Japanese bus body manufacturer producing articulated buses with the only other option being buses from Europe, that are non-compliant to Japanese regulations and not equipped with any Japanese accessory equipment upon delivery to the customer.

“The articulated buses that we are producing for the Japanese market are 100 per cent compliant to their vehicle regulations complete with Japanese equipment.”

A wonderful century of living

New centenarian Dorothy ‘Dot’ Volk replied to son Robert with gleaming eyes and a cheeky grin: “If you say so”.

Rob, his brother Brian, other family members and friends joined Dot at Parkglen Retirement Community in Keysborough on Wednesday 6 September to celebrate her 100th birthday.

She requested a dancing-themed afternoon tea and put on a song and dance for her guests.

“I used to go dancing quite a lot,” she told the Journal.

“I used to go Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and sometimes Sundays as well.”

It was at a dance in Highett that she met her husband John, known as Jack.

“We used to dance together a lot,” she said.

“We both loved dancing.”

Dot grew up in Hampton and before meeting John worked as a seamstress at Myer on the fifth floor.

They raised their family in Cheltenham.

“I have a wonderful family,” she said.

“They’re the best.”

John died about 30 years ago, and Dot moved into Parkglen.

She spent 15 years in an independent unit before transferring into the assisted care area.

There she met Arthur and then David. Her sons joked that “she had all these blokes” and had outlasted them all.

Dot laughed.

“I’ve had some nice friends,” she said.

During her century of life she successfully battled both bowel cancer and tuberculosis.

Sewing, netball, golf and dancing have been her passions.

“I’ve looked after myself,” she said.

One key to long life is “being happy all the time and smiling”.

Brian said his mum only got her driver’s licence at age 62, though hit the road in secret for many years before. She held a licence until 2015.

“It’s really terrific to think that somebody’s got to this age. It’s absolutely marvellous.”

Rob relayed a tale of his mother’s driving, describing the day he was waiting for her outside her unit.

“She went to swing into the garage but I’m standing there, she drives straight at me,” he said.

“I said ’sh*t mum, what are you doing!?’ and

she said ’the sun was in my eyes’.

“She nearly took me out. She knocked the whole letter box down.”

Parkglen CEO Kerrie Lavery said it was wonderful to be able to celebrate such a milestone with Dot and her family and friends.

“She’s got a fabulous sense of humour that keeps her young at heart,” she said. Dot has five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

SPORT One hundred and now she’s out Polijuice Potion, one of the most consistent greyhounds to grace Sandown Park, has been retired following her 100th start on Speed Star Super Sunday.

Bred, owned and trained by Ian and Lisa Cockerell, the rising four-year-old was a fixture at Sandown Park throughout her career, making 68 appearances at the View Road circuit, including her last 29 track appearances.

“I don’t know what it was, she just liked it here,” said Lisa Cockerell after confirming Polijuice Potion’s retirement.

“She’d get out of the van here and always be up and jumpy and giving me cuddles and excited to be here.

“She was a bit quieter if she went to The Meadows and we didn’t try any of the other tracks once she hit the city tracks because it just didn’t suit her.

“She liked the circle tracks and we like it here too so it suits.”

Polijuice Potion, or ‘Butterfly’ as she was named by the Cockerell’s six-year-old daughter Morgan, certainly did like Sandown Park. Her overall record at the track was 68 starts for 16 wins and 22 minor placings.

Butterfly began her career in May 2015 and had never spent more than a month away from the track since.

She became a weekly fixture at Sandown Park in the final seven months of her career, finishing in the money 17 times in that time, a remarkable effort given each of those starts were in mixed grade or higher.

“She was pretty terrible early on,” said Cockerell with a laugh.

“She wasn’t one at break in that we thought ‘she’s the one’, so for her to do what she’s done, it’s pretty special.

Polijuice Potion retired after a stellar career.

“We do everything (whelping, rearing, breaking), so I, literally, watch them be born and watch them retire.

“I get really nervous the first time they go around, but am just so proud whether they win lose or draw if they go around and they’ve tried hard it’s the best.”

Polijuice Potion’s biggest win on the track, the listed Australian Sprint, came about in unusual circumstances.

With plans to step up to 715m in place, the Maidment Memorial over 595m was the target.

However a nomination mix up saw Polijuice Potion draw box 1 in the 515m feature that in-

After coming so close to gaining entry into the NPL’s top tier for 2018, the City finished second on the NPL2 East table.

Kuzman is Dandenong’s new head coach with Bebic the new assistant at Frank Holohan Reserve.

The duo led Northcote City to promotion from NPL2 west into Victoria’s top tier this season.

Kuzman has established an impressive coaching CV in his young career, having grown up and played in Adelaide before relocating to Melbourne.

He has already won promotion from NPL2 while an assistant coach at Richmond and enjoyed a stint as assistant coach at Port Melbourne.

Kuzman also has head coaching experience at Dandenong’s sister-club St Albans Saints.

Dandenong City president Tony Dorotic said securing Kuzman and Bebic was a coup after their impressive campaign in the opposite NPL division last season.

“We are very excited with our new coaching staff for next season,” Dorotic said.

“We were so close to securing our stated ambition of promotion into the top NPL division, and we believe that we are now well placed to go a step further in 2018.”

“But there were so many highlights. Winning her maiden was awesome, when she won over 700m to win over all three distances, then her last start was really special.

“We knew she couldn’t match Zipping Angus but to jump as good as she did and try as hard, that was really special.

“She’s come up against the young gun coming through the ranks and it just proved that she can still run a pretty good time.

“She’s always tried - she’s never not - I think that’s the most important thing with her.”

Her final run was the third fastest in the Galactic Diamond Speed Star event, collecting another $500 to take her career stake money to $177,940.

Combined with her litter mates, the Kinloch Brae x Finlandia progeny have registered 55 race wins and $359,103.

Being a fixture at Sandown Park for as long as she has, retirement will take some getting used to - for trainer and greyhound.

“It’s different coming to Sandown without her.

She always went in the driver’s side front compartment, it’s always been hers so to not put her in there it’s definitely different.

“She was watching us weigh the dogs yesterday and she said ‘pick me!’ I don’t think she gets it yet and I don’t think she’ll take to it lightly.

“It’s bit of a privilege to have one like her. All the dogs are special but when you get one like her it’s a bit more special.

“It was a bit sad coming out of here last Sunday afternoon knowing that was the last time.”

At the annual Chandler Medal, the two midfielders were rewarded for their consistent efforts in what turned out to be a tough year for the Bulls, finishing in seventh position with a 10-8 home-and-away record.

Martin played 16 games for the Bulls in 2017 but missed a handful of games, and was named in the best a total of 11 times, while Sketcher patrolled the wings and half-back to be among the best in almost all of his 17 appearances this year.

Although Chris Annakis of Doncaster took out the Chandler Medal as Division 1’s champion player, Martin - who played a bunch of games in the AFL for Collingwood only a few years ago, was able to finish inside the top 10 with a total of 14 votes.

Brett Dore (10 votes), Sam Monaghan (nine) and Ziggie Alwan (eight) all managed to finish inside the top-30 after also having strong seasons, while Sketcher (six votes) and former AFL-man James Gwilt polled just the solitary vote in his return season for the club.

There were some excellent names in the Division 1 Team of the Year, with Kris Pendelbury (Balwyn) - brother of Collingwood captain Scott - Matt Jones (South Croydon) and brilliant goalkicker Jake Best (Vermont) all named in the side.

Former North Melbourne midfielder Leigh Adams, who played 104 AFL matches with the ‘Roos, was named as the Coach of the Year.

Game on for new-look Rangers

By Nick Creely A vastly new look Dandenong Rangers outfit will roll onto the court in their opening round WNBL clash with Melbourne Boomers on 5 October, but coach Larissa Anderson is excited about what the 2017/18 season will bring.

With Tayla Roberts, Laia Palau, Kiera Rowe, Rebecca Pizzey, Tess Lavey, Kayla Pedersen and Carley Mijovic all signing up for the club this season, Anderson simply can’t wait to see what her revamped squad can do.

“It’s a great feeling (the season getting closer) - we’ve had three games now and got better each match - we are finding our feet, we have a couple of new faces, so it’s just about getting us much game time and training together to get ready because we are just two weeks away,” she said.

“We’ve got a much better mix of veterans - we are still very young across the board, but you can just tell that we have just that bit more experience this year, so that’s shaping well - the likes of Sara (Blicavs) and Steph (Blicavs) are just getting better and better, as well as Amelia (Todhunter) helping lead from the front.”

While Anderson admits the transitional phase and a new list of players to work with was initially difficult, she now believes it has given her group real drive heading into the season.

“Unfortunately some of the change was unintended with players leaving and retiring - some of it was lifestyle and others just decided leaving, so there was more change than we anticipated, so pre-season felt a bit flat early, and its only now that I’ve realised how proud we should be in playing in a grand final in our second year together,” she said.

“We’re always very particular in who we target because of our strong culture, and that’s a thing we’re proud of.

“I think the girls have fitted in beautifully and there’s a really good feeling among the group.

“Everyone’s really got the fire in the belly and everyone that’s come to us feels that this is the environment to play at their best and they’re all

“We’ve got Boomers first up and that’s always a great rivalry - we played them last week (in a practice match) and they just got us - it was our first game and it was their third and it certainly

felt like that,” Anderson said.

“It’s going to be a different look come two weeks’ time - we always look forward to our games against the Boomers - we’re all great friends off the floor, but once we’re on the floor its game on.”

Club and council partnership sees exciting future With the season now just weeks away, Dandenong Cricket Club (DCC) launched its 2017/18 campaign in partnership with the City of Greater Dandenong last Wednesday night.

The City of Greater Dandenong’s support has included significant attention around facilities with councillor Angela Long announcing “it is only fitting that the Women’s First XI will play home games at Shepley”.

Cricket Victoria CEO Tony Dodemaide and chairman Russell Thomas were also on hand for the celebrations, echoing Cr Long’s sentiments.

“There’s exciting news in Dandenong”, said Dodemaide in a broad update of cricket in Victoria, “but also across the state it is an exciting time to be a part of the cricket family”.

DCC Vice President Kelly Applebee recognised the vital, ongoing support of both the City of Greater Dandenong and Cricket Victoria throughout the merger, saying that it, “allows us to create opportunities”.

“It has been a smooth transition”, said Applebee.

“It has been nothing but a success so far and

we are excited for the future.”

This exciting future will unfold under a new look for the Lions, which President Michael Findlay described as a “leaner, meaner panther” incorporating the colours of both DCC and DWCC. As well as looking forward to the season ahead, the night also celebrated the significant history of the club, culminating in the induction of a fourth ‘Legend’.

As a Life Member of Dandenong Women’s Cricket Club since 1999, Cathryn Fitzpatrick received the DCC equivalent only this year but has immediately been elevated to join Des Nolan, Graeme Way and Brendan McArdle as a Legend of the club.

Fitzpatrick, who grew up in the Dandenong area, has made an unparalleled contribution to cricket in the region and has an enviable record as a player and coach at both state and international levels.

Her achievements and contributions include: • Six time Dandenong Women’s CC Club Champion; • Una Paisley Medal 2007; • 103 matches as player for Victorian Spirit (debut Jan 1990);

• 13 Test matches, 109 ODIs for Australia (debut 1991); • Two World Cups as player and three as coach; • Australian Women’s International Cricketer of the Year 2004; • Order of Australia Medal 2004; • Honorary Life Member Marylebone CC, Lords 2017.

The night was rounded out with an update on coaches, captains and new players.

Key inclusions for the women’s XIs include Kim Garth (Ireland) and Jo van der Veen (South Africa) while the men welcome Jak Jowett (St Kilda) among others.

The second-generation XV comes in four variants - 2.0i, 2.0i-L, 2.0i-Premium and 2.0i-S - with a reduced entry-level price of $27,990, plus onroad costs, and is the second Subaru after the new Impreza to make use of the company’s acclaimed Global Platform, designed to provide high rigidity, and strength, together with less weight. Rolling resistance is reduced with the help of specially developed tyres.

On the outside the XV uses a design theme based on sharp edges and bold curves producing a solid profile and no soft styling.

A strong horizontal bar across the radiator grille is a reminder of a horizontally opposed engine conrod and Subaru’s Boxer heritage, while a sharp windscreen angle, together with a large rear spoiler and bumper, aids aerodynamics.

The 2.0i-Premium and lower grades run on 17-inch alloy wheels.

The new Subaru Global Platform has given more interior width and height to the XV, with added attention to detail from switches and interactive displays, and use of quality materials and superior finish.

Displays vary from model to model, with a 6.3-inch colour multi-function display across the range at the top of the central dashboard presenting useful and entertainment information such as audio, air-con, fuel efficiency, favourites and settings.

The lower part of the screen provides visuals of Subaru’s advanced safety functions, including EyeSight on 2.0i-Premium, auto lights and vision assist.

playing, with the wide screen enabling a large amount of text to be displayed, while tracks or radio channels can be chosen by using the steering wheel switch, at the same time viewing the multi-function display screen directly in front of the driver.

Smartphones with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, can be connected via an 8-inch screen positioned high on the dash to minimise shifting of the driver’s eyes from the road.

Just by speaking commands to Siri or Google Now, users can text also without taking their eyes off the road.

Music apps such as Spotify, iHeartRadio and Tuneln can be enjoyed through a sound system incorporating speakers in the rear doors, woofers in the front doors and tweeters in the instru-

ment panel. Power comes from a new 2-litre fourcylinder direct injection naturally aspirated Boxer engine producing 115 kW of power at 6000rpm and 196 Nm of torque at 4000 revs and is mated with a new lightweight Lineartronic continuously variable transmission with a wider gear range than previously.

EyeSight, in conjunction with adaptive cruise control acts as a second pair of eyes for the driver, keeping a look-out for any vehicle ahead and adapting the speed to match the distance.

As with all Subarus, the XV has earned the top five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program, while top-strength structural design will ensure the car is capable of the highest ratings until at least 2025.

The new XV was introduced to the media earlier this year in the Snowy Mountains and on a drive to the NSW Coast.

Outside it was brass monkey weather with temperatures in minus single-figures Celsius.

Inside, thanks to cabin highly efficient climate control, the cabin was cosy without being claustrophobic.

Out on the bitumen, active torque vectoring had the XV turning better than before with improved response and control, while the all-new lane keeping assist and reverse automatic braking when parking underlined the car’s five-star safety rating.

Noise and vibration were kept to a minimum, while the four-cylinder engine was refined in its power delivery, roaring only when pressed hard.

The CVT, lighter than previously, again worked smoothly and without fuss across a wider range of ratios, offering the chance for the driver to become more involved with a seven-speed manual mode.

Holden’s all-new Commodore will go on public display for the first time at Motorclassica, Australia’s premier classic and collector car exhibition.

The eagerly awaited German-built Holden is crammed with the latest in technology and is driven by either a V6 to all four wheels, or a hightech turbo-petrol four-cylinder connected to the front wheels.

It will be greeted at Motorclassica by all eight generations of Australian-made Commodores.

Motorclassica 2017 will also be marking 100 years since the first Holden-bodied car was made in Australia, almost three decades before General Motors started making Holden branded cars Downunder.

Another major highlight of Motorclassica 2017 will be a celebration of Ferrari’s 70th Anniversary, one of only a select number of events officially supported and sanctioned by Ferrari in Maranello, Italy.

Still on the Italian side, a national Lancia Rally will also pay tribute to 110 years of this marque with a number of iconic Lancia rally cars in original race livery, accompanied by a display of very rare models including one of just two 1947 Lancia Aprila Spyder Gransport Ghias, a 1957 Lancia Appia GT Zagato and a Lancia Flaminia Supersport Zagato.

Motorclassica will recognise Australia’s status as the first country outside the USA to race speedway and celebrate these vintage years with a display of speedway midgets from the 1930s to 1960s.
