Bill Shorten has turned up the pressure on Victorian gas bans a week after the Indy reported a local MP’s push to tap onshore reserves.

The Federal Labor leader visited a North Shore factory yesterday, calling on the Andrew’s Government to lift its moratorium on onshore gas.

“Wherever we’ve got conventional gas in Australia we should be pursuing that,” Mr Shorten said.

“I think it’s reasonable if we can extract gas in Australia conventionally, safely (and) in consultation with communities.”

Mr Shorten’s comments came after Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay defied the Victorian Liberal party’s policy of maintaining the moratorium until 2020.

Grant sails so yacht club plans on a different tack

By Luke Voogt A federal funding knockback has forced Royal Geelong Yacht Club to scale back a $19 million waterfront redevelopment, according to the club’s general manager.

The club had slashed $5.5 million from the value of the stage-one project, Phil Clohesy said.

The project initially budged for $9 million from a federal Building Better Regions Fund but the Commonwealth rejected the club’s application, he confirmed.

“We’d anticipated that would be real challenge to get up.

“We just didn’t meet all their criteria is the way they put it.”

Scaling back the funding bid could actually help the club move ahead sooner with the “vital” Geelong Waterfront Safe Harbour Project, Mr Clohesy said.

“We asked ourselves, ‘What can we do in the interim while we’re still pursuing funding from various agencies, including the Federal Government?’

“We’ve just been encouraged by our funding partners to get the project up and running.”

Mr Clohesy welcomed City Hall reconfirming its $3 million commitment to the revised project on Wednesday night.

He believed that beginning construction could “open the door like it did for Simonds Stadium”.

The stadium has now accumulated $177m in renovations since its stage-one development in 2003.

“Once construction starts the waterfront becomes a much greater focus,” Mr Clohesy said.

But he declined to detail which elements of stage one faced the chop under the revised budget.

The club had a $4 million commitment from State Government and was chasing $3.5m from

Victorian School Building Authority for the project’s sailing school component, he said.

“We’ll be in a position to announce what elements of the first stage would change once the funding is fully committed.”

The club had made a further application for federal funding from a $20 Geelong Regional Jobs and Investment Package, he said.

“We anticipate there are some further funding announcements imminent which will allow us to commence the project on a $13.5m basis.”

The club would commit the remaining $3 million for the project, Mr Clohesy said.

A statement on Thursday said City Hall extended its funding commitment until December 2018 so the club had time to secure additional funding.

The statement stressed the importance of ensuring the building of public open spaces in stage one “given the uncertainty around funding for future stages”.

In Brief Teen killed An 18-year-old Bannockburn woman has died in a single-car accident at Gheringap.

Police said the woman’s vehicle appeared to have left the Midland Hwy before hitting a tree on Wednesday morning. Paramedics were unable to save her life at the scene.

Cladding tests A fire engineer will complete “a revised assessment” to determine whether cladding on Simonds Stadium’s eastern stand is a fire risk, according to a trust managing Kardinia Park.

The trust appointed the engineer and prepared to test cladding samples after the Indy last week reported an industry source concern that the cladding could be the same material involved in recent building fires.

Robbery charges Police have arrested a Corio woman on hundreds of charges of robbing frail, elderly men around Geelong.

Police alleged that some of the victims lost tens of thousands of dollars to Charmaine Elson, who was arrested as she left Geelong Magistrates’ Court this week to answer similar earlier charges.

Sweet relief Geelong’s council has followed Barwon Health’s lead with a plan to ban sugary drinks.

City Hall administrators this week approved the “staged withdrawal” of sweetened and sports drinks from all this council-operated venues, citing a commitment to public health.

Walkers make great strides as dogs lend paw for cause

By Luke Voogt Local pooches are putting their paws to the pavement for a positive cause in the latest walking group to spring up along the Barwon River.

The healthy hounds have raised money since November through the ETC Dog Walk, the brainchild of local gym owner John Bourke.

“A lot of our members that don’t have dogs come just so they can be around them,” John said.

“It’s grown to the point where it’s not just gym people - it’s now for people who just want to take their dog for a walk.”

The canny canines supported efforts to raise nearly $15,000 for two junior members at the gym, whose mother died before Christmas last year. The walkers have since turned their efforts towards raising money for Geelong charity Adopt Me Inc, which finds new home for local abandoned pets.

“He lives at the gym fairly often,” John said.

Double Take Geelong looks set for another towering monument to its rapidly expanding ranks of public servants, with City Hall planning a new $100 million headquarters on a council-owned car park in Mercer St. City Hall’s administrators explain that the new headquarters would bring together nine separate council offices, saving about $16 million a year.

Fair enough. But have the administrator’s considered options with potentially greater benefits?

For instance, council candidate George Ballas suggested a move to Target’s North Geelong head office after the company relocates to Melbourne.

And a largely vacant site also in the north remains largely overlooked.

Employment Precinct has even more to offer: it’s already owned by the council, plenty of land’s available, it’s close to transport infrastructure, and the northern suburbs could sure do with the investment boost.

Apparently an officer found five kittens in the roof of a Brunswick building - and they were brought to a Geelong rescue centre for new homes.

‘Success’ behind council loan growth, say admins

By Luke Voogt Geelong’s “urban growth success” is partly responsible for a forecast blowout in City Hall loans to $125 million, according to council administrators.

Administrators chair Kathy Alexander this week attributed $10 million of the extra debt to sharing the increased costs of new estates with developers.

Earlier this month the Indy revealed that the administrators had adopted a budget forecasting loans to triple from $45 million at the end of last financial year to $125 million four years later.

Dr Alexander said the $10 million hit would arrive in 2020.

“Total debt to 2020 is higher than predicted 12 months ago due to the City’s commitment to de-

velopment contribution plans,” she said.

“The borrowing component for land acquisitions in particular has increased more than expected as a result of greater Geelong’s urban growth success.”

Dr Alexander also defended the administrators “prudent” deferral of $36 million in loans, which helped produce the reduced figure of $45 million at the end of last financial year.

Shadow local government minister David Davis slammed the deferral in last week’s Indy, accusing the administrators of “kicking the can down the track” to next month’s incoming council.

But Dr Alexander said the loans were deferred because they were not needed until 2017/2018.

“It makes no sense to borrow $36 million in

2017/2018 if we don’t yet need all of this money to fund projects the City considers essential to cater for Geelong’s future growth and development.”

Dr Alexander said staging council loans created “savings by not paying interest on money we don’t yet need”.

The administrators deferred $28.9 million to 2017/2018 and $7.1 million to 2018/2019, she said.

“As a result of not taking out any borrowings in 2016/2017 the City saved $1.269 million of interest and $2.845 million of loan principle repayments.”

In June 2016 Dr Alexander was reported to have described the previous council’s budget plan for loans of $93 million as “not good financial management”.

“(Premier Daniel) Andrews needs to be sensible,” Mr Ramsay told the Indy last week.

“I’m asking his energy minister to enable the state’s onshore gas reserves to be tapped where it is safe to do so.”

Mr Shorten visited Incitec Pivot’s Geelong plant yesterday morning to urge Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull to “pull the trigger” on gas export controls.

Rising power costs could threaten Pivot’s 120 jobs despite the company increasing productivity by $6 million in the past three years, Mr Shorten said.

Energy prices have increased 60 per cent in the past 18 months at the factory, which has manufactured fertiliser since 1926.

“It could all be for nothing unless we deal with the energy crisis in Australia,” Mr Shorten said.

The opposition leader urged the government to prioritise the Australian gas supply to local businesses and said a lack of control on exports had contributed to “spiralling” prices.

“I think Australian business struggles with the idea that Japanese or overseas businesses can buy Australian gas more competitively than Australian business can.”

Mr Turnbull has signalled his intent to introduce export controls, a measure supported by Manufacturing Australia.

“We recognise the Prime Minister’s leadership in that respect,” said Manufacturing Australia executive director Ben Eade.

High power prices and energy shortages threatened the roughly 10,000 manufacture jobs in Geelong, Mr Eade said.

“Right now we have an emergency situation.”

Despite Geelong’s manufacturing decline, the sector is still the city’s third largest employer according to the latest Enterprise Geelong statistics.

Mr Eade backed Mr Ramsay’s calls to lift the moratorium in favour of a “sensible middle-ground” for exploring gas.

“Rethinking the moratorium on onshore conventional gas is very important,” he said.

He also backed Mr Ramsay’s calls to slow the shutting of coal-fired power stations in Victoria, which he said provided vital baseload electricity.

“We do have a pretty fragile baseload energy mix now with coal fire sources having come out of the system.”

Incitec Pivot’s Geelong plant relies mainly on electricity, not gas. But Mr Eade said often gas prices set the wholesale price for electricity.

Geelong Manufacturing Council executive officer David Peart said rising energy costs were threatening future investment in the sector.

The council was looking at alternatives, such as reducing energy consumption, increasing efficiency and introducing renewables, with its members, he said.

Defiant ex-mayor’s back for more Labor’s minister shrugs off arrest

By Luke Voogt Former Geelong mayor Bruce Harwood has declared he will run for Geelong’s next council in defiance of calls for “fresh faces”.

“A new council is going to need some experience on it,” Mr Harwood said, as he declared his candidacy to the Indy on Wednesday.

“A number of community requests are going unheeded as the community’s voice has been completely muted.”

Mr Harwood pledged to retain Highton Library, which a passionate community campaign prevented from closing earlier this year.

Barwon Heads Road urgently needed upgrading “to help with the huge increase in vehicle traffic and future use,” he added.

His Greater Geelong priorities included campaigning for the city’s conference centre, a 21st century bus port, homeless accommodation and repairing pot holes.

“Arguably one of the greatest complaints from our road users is that the council does respond well enough to (this problem),” he said.

Mr Harwood served multiple times as mayor and deputy mayor, but declared he had no interest in the top job.

“I’ll certainly look at the supporting role (of deputy mayor) if required,” he said.

Mr Harwood was part of the council which State Government dismissed in April 2016.

But he was unfazed by Geelong MP Christine Couzen’s threat earlier this year that sacked councillors could face new investigations.

“I have nothing to fear if the State Government decides to finally investigate any allegations against any previous councillors,” he said.

“My question would be why wasn’t this done in the first place to give the community the transparency and information that was supposedly being sought?”

Meanwhile fellow sacked councillor John Irvine has withdrawn from the municipal race after

“I haven’t got the drive and the passion for it anymore,” he said. “But I’ll still advocate for the local community.”

Rod Macdonald, who was also part of the sacked council, said he would continue his work

on a community broadband project instead of running in the next Geelong election.

Former Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins and local coalition MP Simon Ramsay have both called for fresh faces for Geelong’s new council.

A Baptist minister who was arrested while protesting in the office of Labor’s local heavyweight is to seek election as a declared member of the same party.

Brent Lyons-Lee said his candidacy for Kardinia Ward was “surprising” given the 2014 incident involving MP Richard Marles, federal Labor’s defence shadow minister.

Police charged Mr Ly- Brett Lyons-Lee ons-Lee and six other local religious figures with refusing to leave a public place after their eight-hour sit-in over asylumseeker children in detention.

A magistrate later fined each member of the group $200 without conviction.

Mr Lyons-Lee, who lives at Waurn Ponds with his wife and nine-year-old son, described himself as “passionate about social justice” including “asylum-seeker rights”.

“I am an entrepreneurial and visionary leader motivated by a desire to understand and improve the world around me and devise fresh solutions to difficult problems,” he said.

Mr Lyons-Lee was one of two Labor-affiliated candidates to emerge this week, with Melissa Caldwell targeting Brownbill Ward.

Several declared Greens members will also contest the election in various wards.

Harmony in bells A Geelong artist has chimed in with 700 bells to try spreading harmony in Melbourne’s troubled south-east.

Manifold Heights’ Jasmine Grace has installed the golden bells in a Noble Park tree to symbolise the suburb’s cultural diversity.

“I came up with the concept of the Harmony Tree and wanted to find an area that was quite multicultural,” Ms Grace said.

“I’m studying a master of public art at the moment and one of my lecturers suggested Greater Dandenong Council to me.”

Ms Grace used bells of all shapes and sizes, made in India.

“That’s one of the things that was important to me - making sure they make different sounds to symbolise how having the uniqueness of the different sounds and the diversity of different sounds, you can create harmony through diver-

sity,” Ms Grave said.

“I basically hired a ladder and I spent two days up in the tree installing, tying them onto the tree with fishing wire.”

Ms Grace hoped the installation would affect passers-by as an “interruption to the business of their lives”.

“I also really wanted to create a gathering place that was peaceful for people, but also I want it to be symbolic of just encouraging people to embrace the diversity of cultures within the community.”

Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs have suffered a series of recent anti-social crimes, including rampaging gangs at shopping centres and numerous home invasions.

In December the RACV reported a 40 per cent increase in aggravated burglaries across the south-east.

One of Geelong’s long-time theatre “families” will come to an end in style with a three-part series celebrating its fondest onstage memories.

Scottish expat Ron Sudden and wife Maureen founded the Bayside Entertainment and Theatre Inc, or BEAT Inc, in 2005 for the city’s older residents to live their theatrical dreams.

“We wanted to get something for the older age bracket people that didn’t get a chance to perform in bigger shows in Geelong,” he told the Indy.

“We’ve got people in their eighties, seventies and sixties still performing - it’s marvellous.”

But after 12 years, the troupe of singers, dancers and actors will say Thanks for the Memories during their final curtain call next month.

“We think it’s time to wind it up on a high while we’re all fit and people are able to still perform well - which they are,” Ron said.

Ron remembered BEAT’s “packed“ first performance, Hits of the Blitz, at Geelong Performing Arts Centre over four days in 2006.

The show began in darkness, with air-raid sirens blaring through the theatre, which took one “agitated” audience member back to the bombing of England.

“She’d gone through this very thing back home,” Ron said.

The troupe played songs from the 1940s to an audience full of World War II veterans and nurses.

“We asked everybody with medals to stand up and we gave them three cheers,” Ron said.

The show finished with Churchill’s end of war speech and Vera Lynn’s wartime classic We’ll Meet Again.

“Every single audience member in theatre were holding hands and singing together,“ Ron said. “People were crying - it was an amazing experience.”

Ron moved to Geelong from Scotland as a teenager and went on to perform in local theatres for about 50 years.

Late but north health hub ‘closer’ An overdue health centre is “a step closer” for Geelong’s northern suburbs with the finalisation of a consultant’s business case, according to City Hall.

Council administrators approved the business case for the $62 million Northern Arts, Recreation and Community (ARC) Health and Wellbeing Hub this week.

The hub would sit alongside a $33 million Barwon Health hospital facility, whose development is tied to the ARC centre.

Advocates for the northern suburbs have been

demanding a hospital for over a decade, noting the north’s adverse health outcomes.

The Andrews Government announced in 2015 that construction of “Barwon Health-North” would begin in 2016 and finish in 2017 but the project remains in planning stages with the ARC hub.

The delay set up a clash between a council election candidate and City Hall’s administrators chair at a Geelong Business Network breakfast on Wednesday.

No questions for Dutton

By Luke Voogt A retired Ocean Grove bishop has accused a local MP of barring him from grilling Immigration Minister Peter Dutton on Australia’s “secretive" Border Protection policy.

Former Anglican Bishop Peter Danaher joined about 50 people protesting outside an invite-only community meeting at Highton Bowls Club on Monday.

“They don’t want us to be any part of the discussion,” said Rev Danaher, who is president of the Victorian Council of Churches.

“It was absolute waste of time and an insult to people who have a view on a subject.”

Rev Danaher contacted Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson’s office when the Combined Refugee Action Group informed him on Friday about the meeting.

But Ms Henderson’s office told him the meeting was at capacity.

“I went to the venue regardless, in case there happened to be any spare seats.“ Two police officers blocked the doors to the meeting but a fellow protester saw plenty of spare seats prior to it commencing, Rev Danaher said.

He was on Ms Henderson’s mailing list and was disappointed not to receive notice of “the so-called community meeting," he said.

He had planned to question the minister on “women and children living in appalling conditions” on Manus Island and Nauru.

“All the issues pale into insignificance when you look at the way people are treated,” he said.

But Ms Henderson said the meeting was “at capacity” and that she worked very hard to represent her constituents’ views on asylum seekers.

“It was simply not possible to accommodate everyone who wished to attend,” she said.

“I respect Rev Danaher’s right to protest and I would be pleased to assist him in any

River’s Gift keeps giving

By Luke Voogt A recent finding could help save babies from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) thanks to the efforts of Geelong charity River’s Gift.

River’s Gift funded an Australian study, the first of its kind outside the US, which confirmed a link between abnormalities in serotonin and SIDS. Karl Waddell and partner Alex Hamilton started the charity after their son River died of SIDS six years ago, and have raised about $700,000 since.

“It’s incredibly humbling and heart-warming to know that the flame of River’s legacy is burning very strong,” Mr Waddell said.

The University of Adelaide research replicated findings from a US study, which first discovered the link between SIDS and serotonin a decade ago.

Serotonin is a neurochemical that helps regulate sleep and control the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, among other functions.

Mr Waddell hoped the findings would one day lead to a cure for SIDS. “It validates our efforts - saving little babies' lives and ensuring that parents won’t have to go through the pain that we did,” he said.

“If they’re able to replicate the same findings in two separate cohorts, that’s very scientifically powerful.”

Mr Waddell was in discussion with Deakin University’s school of medicine to base SIDs research in Geelong, he said.

Rivers Gift established a fellowship which funded the research of PhD student Fiona Bright who investigated 41 cases of SIDS deaths.

Dr Bright, who graduated last Thursday, found that serotonin abnormalities could impair brain stem function in infants.

“This could lead to an inability of a SIDS infant to appropriately respond to life-threatening events, such as lack of oxygen supply during sleep,” she said.

SIDS is the sudden unexpected death of an infant under one year of age, which is unexplainable through a thorough investigation or autopsy.

It is the leading cause of death in infants between one month and one year old in Australia and the developed world.

Buyers’ fair bids “Scapegoating” of Chinese buyers for rising property prices in Australia could be unfair, according to new Geelong research.

A survey of nearly 370 Chinese buyers found that most were buying residences rather than investments, said Deakin University’s waterfront Business School.

The results cast a “vastly differently light” on Chinese property ownership in Australia, said researcher Dr Mona Chung “This research is long overdue and timely as there is little analysis which is based on evidence to provide an objective picture of Chinese investment in residential real estate,” Dr Chung said.

“This lack of evidence has allowed space and opportunity for the speculation and scapegoating that has seen the finger being pointed at Chinese investors in attempts to explain the problems of housing affordability in Australia.”

Dr Chung’s survey of 367 Chinese individuals from China, Singapore, Malaysia and Australia.

More than 60 per cent had migrated to Australia, with another 14 per cent planning to migrate.

Access to public transport, house price and location were the greatest influences on the respondents property purchases, Dr Chung reported.

Properties under $1million and in the range of $500,000 to $800,000 range accounted for just over 50 per cent of purchases, she said.

Almost a quarter paid between $1 million and $2 million.

“These figures also align with the price expectations of potential purchasers,” Dr Chung said.

“These prices are consistent with the price ranges in Melbourne and suggest that the Chinese are indeed paying market value rather than inflated prices.”

The buyers also preferred buying houses, and in areas with other Chinese residents, Dr Chung said.

“This finding is inconsistent with the common view that Chinese buy most of the units/ apartments built in the recent years.”

Deakin said Dr Chung would continue the next stage of the research “thanks to a grant from the Australia Chinese Workers Association”.

Letters Stop speaking for Aboriginals In last week’s letters to the Indy commenters again decreed how Aboriginals should feel about Australia Day. They fail to realise that stereotyping a race demeans people who might have the audacity to think for themselves and who have different opinions.

Two years ago Senator Cory Bernardi, leader of the Australian Conservatives, discovered he had Aboriginal ancestry. Should he have declared himself Indigenous and demanded Australia Day be moved because it offended him?

In January Aboriginal Alice Springs town councillor Jacinta Nampijinpa Price wrote: “I keep hearing that Aboriginal people want to change the date of Australia Day, well what about the Aboriginal people who don’t want to change the date?”

Ms Price also wrote: “I’m sure if we are pressured enough to change the date then there will be something else for Aboriginal middle class activists and guilt ridden white fellas to be offended about.

Why aren’t these people as concerned about the Aboriginal people affected by domestic violence, alcohol and drug abuse?”

On Australia Day we should acknowledge the past but, most importantly, strive to come together as Australians regardless of race, religion, or other factors.

As Ms Nampijinpa Price wrote, changing the day won’t change the “offence-taking”.

I again ask activists to stop trying to divide us by race by stereotyping Aboriginals, who are individuals who can think for themselves.

Irish polygamy unlawful I would like to point out misconceptions in Pastor Frank Lowry’s letter, headlined 'Slippery slope to polygamy’ (Geelong Indy, 15 September).

He stated that “the recent vote in Ireland by a minority of the population to alter the definition of marriage” should be questioned.

Ireland has no compulsory voting yet 62 per cent of those who decided to vote did so to approve the change. In the plebiscite 1,949,735 out of 3,221,681 voters voted.

In the next paragraph Mr Lowry incorrectly indicated that the “Irish Supreme Court recognised the polygamous marriage of a refugee from Lebanon”. The 15 June Irish Times reported that the Supreme Court had unanimously ruled the first marriage valid but the second invalid under Irish law.

The court reportedly went on to state that the second marriage was invalid because the institution of polygamy was not contemplated by the constitution.

The 22 June Irish Legal News reported that the issue regarding the first marriage arose because the man’s second wife was granted asylum on the basis she was his spouse. The first wife arrived afterward, so her application for asylum was refused.

In delivering the judgement, Justice O’ Malley stated that Irish law did not recognise the validity of the second, polygamous marriage.

Anyone wanting to state a case for the postal survey yes or no vote should ensure what they say is based on fact.

Sweet on drinks ban I congratulate City of Greater Geelong for its plan to remove sugary drinks from all council and community-operated sport venues and facilities by the end of 2019.

It was great to learn that vending machines at community facilities and council worksites would have healthy drinks as up to 80 per cent of options.

Sugary drinks, including sport and energy drinks, are the largest source of added sugars in the Australian diet. A regular 600ml bottle of soft drink contains a whopping 16 teaspoons of sugar, with around 11 in a sports drink.

Sadly, we constantly find a smorgasbord of these drinks at venues where children and families regularly play and watch sport. This sends an unhealthy message to our kids: that sport and soft drinks go hand in hand.

Removing sugary drinks at local sport grounds and facilities will go a long way in improving the health of Geelong locals and encouraging healthy choices.

VicHealth research also shows that when businesses promote healthier food and drink options there is no decline in profits.

I hope to see other councils across Victoria follow Geelong’s lead.

Funny men to hit stage for laughs Workplace cheats, insurance fraudsters and Fat Pizza favourites will “trip” and hit the stage when Straight Outta Compo comes to Geelong next month.

But the show was more family friendly than Fat Pizza fans would expect, said Tahir Bilgic, who played drug-dealing fence Habib in the cult TV series.

“They see us and expect we’re going to come out in tracksuits and we’re going to be selling drugs to the audience,” he said.

“We try to keep it as clean as possible but edgy.

It’s actually harder to do that than say ’let’s just swear and go crazy.”

Tahir and his fellow comedians looked no further than the “A Current Affair stereotypes” as inspiration for the “pacey” comedy’s sketches.

The show features doggy compo claims and “injured” workers caught riding bikes and doing weights at home.

“We’re picking on the fact that a lot of ethnics are taking advantage of the system,” Tahir said.

“What we’re doing is making fun of ourselves and that’s the Australian way.

“That’s slowly being eroded by the PC crew, but we don’t want to lose that sense of humour.”

Even in the Fat Pizza days, he and fellow actors copped criticism “all the time” for mocking the Prime Minister, blowing up the tax office or other crass stunts in the series.

“But every time we did something like that the ratings would blow up,” Tahir said.

Many who recognised him from the low-budget series were amazed to learn he worked as an

English and drama teacher before comedy.

“Habib’s got a degree?” he said. “No way - he must have knocked it off!”

“We’ve got two generations now, people who grew up with Fat Pizza and kids who are just discovering our shows.”

Tahir joined prolific comedians George Kapiniaris and Joe Avati for the show earlier this year.

“George is a bit of a legend and it’s a bit of a buzz to work with him,” he said. “(Joe and I) started comedy on the open mike literally together.”

Tahir looked forward to returning to Geelong for an “electric” crowd.

But next month will be the first time here for former Fat Pizza compatriot and the show’s fourth member Rob Shehadie.

“I’m looking forward to getting down there,” he said.

Shehadie played the belligerent Lebanese enforcer Rocky in Fat Pizza and more recently created and acted in TV series Here Come the Habibs.

He said self-depreciating multicultural comedy has always “really worked” in Australia, especially among its ethnic communities.

“It makes them proud and they love to come out and have a laugh,” he said.

The family friendly Straight Outta Compo “smashed it” in the major cities earlier this year, he said.

“We enjoy doing the club run - it’s a bit more personal and up close.

“You’ve got nearly 100 years of comedy experience on stage. We know what makes an audience laugh.”

By Justin Flynn Young local Katy Perry fans will enjoy “a genuine experience“ of their hero at Corio’s Gateway Hotel next month, according to one of the US star’s impersonators.

Melbourne performer Kristy Jinks said she was “super excited“ about bringing her Katy Perry Tribute Show to Geelong.

“Geelong, Katy can’t wait to come and perform for you all,” Jinks told the Indy.

She described her show as a fully costumed extravaganza featuring hits such as California Gurls, Teenage Dream, ‘Firework’, Part of Me and Roar.

Jinks said she was also a Perry fan.

“I get to have a lot fun with the show and with all the costumes - I’ve studied her down to the core.”

Many young patrons of previous shows thought Jinks was the real deal, she said.

“Some of them ask, ‘Is that your real hair?’, and, ‘How did you change your hair so quickly?’. I just say I have a hairdresser back stage.

“A lot of the kids who come, it’s their first ever concert.”

Jinks said she performed with two dancers a small, dedicated backstage team.

“It’s a team effort and it’s gotten easier over time - we show up and we all know what to do now.”

Hit songs Roar and Chained to the Rhythm were the show’s current crowd favourite, Jinks said.

“Every time a new song comes out, it’s usually the one that’s the most popular.”

Jinks plays the Gateway on 4 October, with doors opening 10.30am.

Spring has finally arrived and the school holidays are here.

Luckily for parents there’s a whole bunch of great experiences and things to do around the region these school holidays to keep the kids entertained.

Geelong’s hub of all things wool will play host to an array of ‘wacky woolly’ craft activities including Pompom Monsters, Knitted Critters and Wool People.

While there visitors can brush up on their Australian wool history from sheep farming and production through to the processing of fleece into fabric.

Searoad Ferries is holding its first ever Kids High Tea. Visitors can enjoy a tiered platter of sweet and savoury treats with the kids as they sail the bay on a two-hour voyage.

While munching on these delicious treats they have the chance to spot dolphins, roam the decks and take in the spectacular views across Port Phillip bay.

The brave of heart can explore the darker side of Geelong’s history with a ghost tour at one of Australia’s largest 1800s convict prisons, the Old

Geelong Gaol.

Theatrical ghost tours are held every night at the Old Geelong Gaol during the school holidays and might be a good lesson for the kids on why they should not to be naughty.

Spring has sprung and at Jirrahlinga which often means there’s new baby animals vying for attention.

Alternatively kids can get up close and personal with the animals as part of the Junior Ranger Program.

Jirrahlinga cares for injured wildlife and is home to many native Australian animals including koalas, kangaroos, emus and dingoes.

As an added bonus, visitors to some of these locations can be in the draw to win $5000 worth of prizes.

They simply have to join the Wander Geelong and The Bellarine virtual reality Quest and visit these locations to solve clues.

There’s only a couple of weeks left to do the Quest.

The RAAF Museum, located at Point Cook, is home to an amazing range of historic military aircraft. A great chance to view these rare machines is at the interactive flying displays which are held every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at 1:00pm (weather permitting).

The Museum has a vast collection of historical material on show, including several hangars with static aircraft. It offers visitors an exciting experience and insight into the history of the Air Force.

Models, books, patches, clothing and mementos can be purchased at the Museum shop.

The only engine offered in Holden Astra sedan is a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol producing 110 kW of power and 240 Nm of torque in the six-speed automatic we tested. Astra hatch comes with this engine, but has the option of a more powerful 1.6 unit. This may, or may not, be offered in the sedan later.

On the safety front, all models have six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), automatic headlights, a rear view camera and rear park assist. Features are added to as the model grades increase, for details the Models section of this report.

The front seats are a good size, and comfortable in normal driving, there’s less side support than you may like if you do hammer it along. Try for yourself on the sort of roads you normally drive on, and perhaps take some potential passengers along for the ride.

Rear seats have space for two adults and they will have enough legroom unless those in the front like their seats well back. A third grown-up can fit without too much hip and shoulder rubbing. Three kids is a more likely load.

The boot is well shaped and a good size, its added volume being an advantage in any sedan when compared with a hatch. However, the coupe-like slope at Astra’s rear does mean it can’t carry very bulky items.

The 1.4-litre turbo engine is a lively unit that’s a real pleasure to sit behind. There’s some turbo lag, but once that has passed there’s plenty of torque to provide good hill climbing and to safe overtaking.

Fuel consumption was in the fives and sixes during motorway sections of our drive route. This rose to seven to nine litres per 100 kilometres around town. Perfectly acceptable in this class and a sign that the reduced weight of the car certainly plays its part.

GM-Holden engineers and stylists were heavily involved in the global scene from the earliest days of this Astra’s design. So it doesn’t surprise that its steering and ride are very much tailored to Australian driver tastes - and harsh Aussie road conditions. Commodore buyers moving down to an Astra will have plenty to like.

By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Holden is very serious about its small-to-medium Astra range. In December 2016 it launched a fivedoor hatch; a four-door sedan - the subject of this test in topline LTZ format - came out in June this year, and a station wagon will be added to before the end of the year.

Sales of the hatch weren’t as high as GMHolden anticipated and weren’t helped by the traditionally slow January/ February holiday and back-to-school periods so recommended prices were dropped a few months after the launch to try and kick things along.

Astra sedan prices probably started lower than originally anticipated, from $20,490 through to $29,790, putting them right into the thick of the fray in this class.

Dealers are under pressure to get the Astra range up and running ASAP and can often be talked into picking up some, maybe even all, of the on-road charges.

The Astra sedan is built in a GM factory in South Korea. It’s finished to the very high standard that has impressed us in vehicles from that country in recent years.

Holden Astra sits on all-new vehicle modular architecture that trims weight by as much as 120 kg compared to the old model. This adds performance at the same time as fuel consumption decreases.

The shape of Astra sedan is neat enough but doesn’t really break any new ground in its rear end. A sporting rear lip spoiler is fitted to the two topline models, the LT and LTZ. Infotainment is centred around a colour touchscreen that’s neatly integrated into the stylish dashboard.

It uses the latest Holden MyLink system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s USB input with iPod connectivity. A clever design feature is the thumb rest to steady your hand while reaching the screen with your forefinger.

There’s a comprehensive range. The entry level Astra LS has 16-inch alloy wheels, a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen, steering wheel mounted controls, a six speaker audio system and cruise control.

Astra LS+ adds a leather-faced steering wheel, automatic high beam, LED daytime running lights (DRLs), Holden Eye forward facing camera, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, forward distance indicator, and forward collision alert.

The Astra LT features 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8.0-inch touchscreen and DAB+ radio. Heated door mirrors are handy in wet weather. It also has front park assist, side blindspot alert, passive entry, push-button start, advanced park assist, and automatic wipers.

The topline Astra LTZ we tested had 18-inch alloy wheels, climate controlled air, an electric sunroof, chromed exterior window surrounds, chromed interior highlights combined with piano black (the latter, as usual, picking up dust within

SPORT It’s upset after upset and the Cats keep on coming

By Justin Flynn Geelong defied its critics to book a preliminary final berth against Adelaide tonight and will look to cause its second upset in as many weeks.

The Cats were the underdogs going into last Friday’s semi-final against Sydney, but turned on a masterclass performance to advance to the preliminary final with a 59-point thrashing.

The stakes couldn’t be any higher with the winner of tonight’s clash to meet either Richmond or Greater Western Sydney in the grand final.

But first the Cats will need to defy the odds again by beating a rampant Adelaide in Adelaide.

The Crows won the corresponding clash at Adelaide Oval by 21 points in round 18, but before that, Geelong had won the past five games between the two sides.

The big question is will Chris Scott start Patrick Dangerfield at full forward for the second week in a row?

Dangerfield was in blistering form against the Swans and if he does line up deep in the forward line, then expect Kyle Hartigan to go to him.

Mark Blicavs was in outstanding form last week, running with Sydney captain Josh Kennedy and soundly beating him.

Rhys Stanley and Zach Smith bounced back with huge games.

Expect Scott Selwood to tag Crows’ midfield gun Rory Sloane. Chris Scott was at his coaching best last week and he will realise the need to quell Sloane’s influence. The Crows have proved very beatable this year when Sloane has a quiet game.

Jordan Bews will match up on livewire Crows champ Eddie Betts in one of the most tantalising individual battles on the night, while Tom Lonergan will return to the team after suffering food poisoning last Friday. Lonergan could be given the job on Taylor Walker.

Adelaide is the highest scoring team in the competition, but the Cats are no dour defenders either. They are ranked equal third.

If Geelong plays like it did against Richmond two weeks ago, it will be thrashed. If it plays like it did against Sydney, they will likely win.

Both state teams set for showdown at Geelong Arena Some of Australia’s best female basketballers will return for a showdown at Geelong Arena next month.

The Melbourne Boomers will take on Bendigo Spirit when the venue hosts the shootout between the two Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) Victorian teams on 13 October.

Towering Boomers star Liz Cambage was looking forward to the match.

“We’re all very excited about playing again in Geelong,” she said during a visit to promote the match.

“There are so many basketball fans here, so it’s important we keep bringing the WNBL to the arena and showcasing the fantastic athletes we have playing in the league.”

The game at the arena follows Geelong hosting it first WNBL match in nine years when the Boomers played Adelaide Lightning at the same venue.

The Boomers will arrive in Geelong seeking to avenge their narrow loss in Geelong last year.

With the WNBL recently signing a new television deal with FOX Sports for this season, the Boomers and the Spirit will also be aiming move up the WNBL ladder this season while winning some new fans in Geelong.

Superstar Cambage, standing 203cm, has resigned with the Boomers after five years playing for leagues in the United States and China.

Drop in, it’s an offshore feast ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Last Sunday’s weather allowed anglers to set out offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads again.

Peri Stavropoulos, father Michael and Andrew Whitford spent a few hours anchored up in 30m off Barwon Heads, where they baited up with freshly-caught Australian salmon for gummy sharks. The fishing soon lived up to expectations, with the trio boating five gummies to 7kg and releasing three, with Andrew also catching a snapper of 5kg.

Alex Surdich ventured out offshore during the week and boated a well-conditioned fish of 75cm.

Back inside the bays, Kevin Hunter and I caught a few squid out the front of Swan Bay on Sunday with Shimano 14T jigs in size 2.5 and 3.5. Other anglers fishing down towards St Leonards boated whiting and squid too, with the Bourke Street area a hot spot.

Clifton Springs allowed anglers to cross paths with a few early-season snapper. The Point Richards Channel was a great starting place, although anglers needed patience to wait for a big fish.

Fresh squid or pilchard was an effective bait, with snapper to 7kg boated.

Corio Bay played hosted to salmon to 1.5kg, with soft plastics anglers fairing the best. At times the salmon were spread from St Helens to Limeburner’s Point.

The inner-harbour also produced another exciting report of snapper off the rocks at St Helens, along with the odd flathead.

Tuna continued tempting anglers between Apollo Bay and Portland, with southern bluefin over 100kg possible. Large skirted lures trolled out from Cape Otway were the go.

Freshwater anglers fared well at Deep Lake. Trolling Tassie Devils in white colours along the lake margins did the trick on brown and rainbow trout to 2kg.

Lake Elignamite, near Cobden, fished well for large redfin and the odd rainbow trout. Hard-body lures worked well when kept weed-free.

Lakes Bullen Merri and Purrumbete still gave up good numbers of brown and rainbow trout. Anglers casting lures among the weed beds at Purrumbete found better numbers of trout.

Wurdee Boluc Reservoir, The Lake of 1000 Casts, lived up to its reputation as anglers put in plenty of time for only a few redfin.

Next week’s improving weather should spoil anglers for choice, with offshore fishing likely to boast plenty of gummies and snapper, which should also be on the move at Clifton Springs. Land-based anglers keep St Leonards Pier in mind as a renowned early-season mark for snapper.
