By Brendan Rees There’s the Tiger army. Then there’s Brenda Hilton.

Meet one of Richmond’s most dedicated fans, whose love for the club goes beyond owning a gold membership.

If something comes in yellow and black, the chances are Brenda will have it - she even has a Tigers TV remote control.

“I don’t do what I do for attention. I love the Tigers,” says Brenda, of Cranbourne West.

Her home is filled with everything Tigers from photos, to wall art, framed memorabilia, caricatures, figurines, clocks, glassware, throws draped over couches and more.

“There’s stuff packed away. We just don’t have room for it,” she says.

And in all the bedrooms, Brenda says, are “bedspreads, linen is black and yellow, soft toys, and blankets.”

She says if people are short on ideas when it comes to buying birthday or other gifts for her “they buy something tigerish.”

A Richmond supporter since the age of four, Brenda was always destined to be a Tiger, adding “Dad followed Richmond and I was born in the year of the tiger.”

“I love the animal. They’re just a stunning animal. In 2012 I flew to Dreamworld just to sit with one. That was a Christmas present. That was beautiful - a 200-kilo white Tiger,” she says.

And her love doesn’t stop there.

She recently bought a Tigers car.

She said her god-daughter found the car online and jokingly sent a message to her mum, saying “Here’s Aunty Brenda’s new car.”

Brenda later viewed the car and admits she was immediately won over by the black and yellow striped

theme and colour scheme.

It wasn’t a hard decision for Brenda and her husband, Alan to drive to Port Macquarie where they bought the car for $300. “It’s a ’96 Suzuki Swift. Runs perfectly. We drove up and it started first go.”

“It’s not driven every day. I’m not fussed what people think or say. If we win the grand final I’ll probably drive it every day.”

She said all the Richmond players also signed the bonnet. “If we win the Grand Final, the bonnet will come off. Alan will take it off and put it in the man cave. We’ll put on another bonnet.”

Brenda says she’s “very hopeful” of winning the preliminary final: “At the end of the day I can’t do anything. It’s out of my control. I’ll go there to support the boys win, lose or draw. Obviously I’ll be a little disappointed if they don’t win but I’ll also be proud they’ve gotten as far as they have.”

“I’m liking how they’re playing.

You can see it - they’re a different team. I’m happy with what I’ve seen.”

“I’ll be there on grand final day.

We’ve already got our tickets. We’re in the cheer squad,” she says.

And she would proudly don her ‘Tigger’ onesie costume - the fictional tiger character from Winnie the Pooh - for the game.

All three of her children, to her dismay, however, are not Tigers supporters: “I scored none. I tried. I did try. I let them decide, I would never force them.”

“They know who their mum barracks for. They buy me Tiger stuff,” she says.

Brenda says if Richmond took out the premiership, she’ll would get: “Whatever they produce I will try and get it. Definitely.”

Jude’s retiring

Cranbourne MP Jude Perera has decided not to stand for the next state election. One of the many successful projects Mr Perera campaigned for was an announcement of a $2 million funding upgrade at the bus interchange at Cranbourne train station in May this year.

Farewell to Barbara

By Brendan Rees Long-time Cranbourne community advocate Barbara Fay Maggs died suddenly on Saturday 16 September, aged 84.

Ms Maggs was honoured for her tireless charity work with her partner Tony Jenner, with a Medal of the Order of Australia during the annual Queen’s Birthday honours in 2015.

At the time of receiving the award, Ms Maggs said: “It put me off balance, but was a marvellous surprise,” she said.

For the past three decades, Ms Maggs and Mr Jenner organised the Cranbourne Ulysses Motorcycle Club Christmas toy run to gather gifts for needy children.

Ms Maggs was a Motorcycle Riders Association life member and also received the highest honour from the Ulysses Club, the Dearnley Medal, which she and Mr Jenner received in 2005. She was also an Australia Day award recipient in 2011.

Ms Maggs’ son, Gary Maggs, said: “We are very saddened by the loss of such a wonderful, committed mother whose love and passion in helping others will be greatly missed and always remembered.”

Mr Maggs said his mother was born at a tough time during World War II. “Tragically, she lost her mother to cancer at three years old. Her father, who trained horses and served as a lighthorseman, was her world.”

Mr Maggs said unfortunately Ms Maggs become an orphan after her father William McCullagh died after a tree he was attempting to remove at Moorooduc Primary School for the safety of children, fell on him.

“By her sixth birthday Barbara grew up with her aunty in Hepburn Springs where they ran a chalet,” he said.

At 18, Barbara was “swept off her feet” where she met her first love, whereby Mr Maggs says, she was sadly “trapped in an abusive relationship” for more than 17 years.

Ms Maggs never received a traffic infringement in her 47 years of driving, Mr Maggs said. “I think that’s a remarkable effort. I said ‘How do you do it?’ to which she said ‘You’ve just got to pay attention to what you’re doing.’”

“She was the most dedicated mother and fought hard to keep us boys together.

She may have been a little woman but she had a big heart,” he said.

“Her boys said just the little simple acts of kindness she would do without anyone knowing, or forever bought things for someone who needed it.”

“She had a very caring, helping spirit.

She was a fighter for the underdog and the oppressed.”

Barbara is survived by her partner Tony, and four sons Gary, Peter, Dale and Lenny.

A funeral service will be held at Tobin Brothers Cranbourne Chapel between 11am - 12am on Tuesday, 26 September, 210 Sladen Street (corner Cooper Court) Cranbourne. Everyone is welcome to attend.

After 16 years of serving the Cranbourne community, State Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera says it’s time for him to say “goodbye.”

Mr Perera has decided not to stand for re-election for the state seat of Cranbourne in the November 2018 state election.

“It’s been an absolute honour and privilege to represent the seat of Cranbourne District since winning the seat in November 2002. It has also been an honour to be elected into the Lower House of any parliament of Australia, as the first Sri Lankan born and totally Sri Lankan educated person. Hopefully others will follow, enriching the multicultural nature of our society,” he said.

Mr Perera said after speaking with his family, it was the right time to leave.

He said he would follow future political developments with interest: “I will be a student and an ardent advocate of the social economy spreading fast in Europe and delivering concrete, long-term, just solutions guaranteeing the livelihood of their people.”

He said he met some “wonderful people” with many he was proud to call his friends.

“I always treated parliament, members from all political persuasions, staff and my constituents with the dignity and respect they deserved.”

Mr Perera said representing and providing the most marginalised with a voice and “going into bat for them” on many occasions so they could get the respect they “simply deserved” was a highlight of his career.

Families doing it tough

By Brendan Rees Soaring power bills and crippling living costs have forced many cash-strapped families in Casey to turn to charities for help.

Figures from the Society of St Vincent de Paul show more than a five per cent increase in the number of people in Casey needing support over the past three years.

St Vincent’s regional president for Casey and Cardinia Caroline Arnett said rising household bills were hurting families.

“Every day there will be calls from people are saying they are in risk of being made homeless or being evicted because they can’t pay their rent. And they might have three or four or even five children,” she said.

Ms Arnett said St Vincent’s was visiting on average 497 people per month, adding Cranbourne was “under the pump” with calls from the community as more people were in danger of being evicted from their homes.

“We had quite a few incidences recently of people living in their cars. Just providing assistance there and assisting people to get back on their feet.”

St Vincent’s had also seen a 30 per cent rise in providing material aid and

support delivered to people in the City of Casey and surrounding areas.

Ms Arnett said St Vincent’s recently helped a Casey mother of four children who were freezing in their home.

“The call came in later on a Friday and they needed blankets and some bedding. Normally we would visit on a Monday. So a couple of people went down and saw the family, found out their circumstances, then went to Target and bought blankets.

“She was freezing. Absolutely freezing. Two of kids were very young. How could you walk away from them and leave them a whole weekend to freeze?”

Among those in need of help is Jo, of Cranbourne, who regularly uses the Vinnies soup van when it stops in Cranbourne.

Jo, who wished not be reveal her surname, has been unemployed since suffering a work injury a year ago but hopes to find a job soon.

She says if it wasn’t for the Vinnies soup van “I’d be very hungry ... probably sick”.

“I have friends who appreciate it.

They are unable to make it here so I help them out in coming here to get them food. But a lot of people are doing it hard at the moment and if they didn’t have this type of service there would be

a lot of suffering.”

St Vincent’s Southern Central Council deputy president Michael Quinn said the situation was “getting worse” with people paying up $400 a week for rent, leaving them with not much left for food expenses.

“They can’t afford to feed their children. They can’t afford to feed themselves.”

“Parents are struggling to pay for school fees. They’re struggling to send their children on school camps. They’re struggling to pay for uniforms,” he said.

Rising gas and electricity bills, he said, were alarming, adding “these things are going up 30 to 40 per cent,” with many on the brink of homelessness.

He said all calls were assessed on a case-by-case basis and St Vincent’s was committed to supporting people experiencing poverty and social isolation, face to face.

“We don’t get any government funding at all. We have our stores and people can help the society by supporting our stores.”

Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said the State Government had invested $799 million in housing and homelessness support, and would deliver more than 6000 social housing units.

Libs’ Cranbourne candidate sets the agenda New Liberal candidate for Cranbourne Ann-Marie Hermans has vowed to “crackdown” on crime and reduce the cost of living for families.

The mother of four said Cranbourne “is really near and dear to my heart” and believes residents “need a fair go.”

She said improving infrastructure, reducing crime, better education and creating more jobs were on her priority list.

“This is an area that is really important to me and something that has really concerned me is that the people here do not have a voice.”

Marking her commitment to the community Ms Hermans visited Kimekai Mixed Martial Arts Gym in Cranbourne, on Tuesday 12 September, and spoke with the owner Leirosa Patterson, who had experienced high energy bills and struggled to “get ahead” as a small business.

Ms Hermans said she was passionate to see skyrocketing energy prices change as small businesses and households struggled to pay their energy bills.

“Electricity bills are going through the roof under Daniel Andrews. People can’t afford to run their business. We need to make it affordable for every Australian to pay their bills,” she said.

situations where they’re living in their cars until they can find somewhere else to live.”

With a background in education, community development and social work, Ms Hermans said “people matter to me” and families in Cranbourne deserved to be supported.

“Having four kids of my own means I’m really concerned how the families are actually struggling in this area and what needs to be done.”

Infrastructure, she said, needed reviewing.

“At the moment we’ve got 70 per cent of our population in Cranbourne who are actually moving out towards the city to go to work. We need to change that.”

“Roads, roads, roads are really important. If we don’t get that right we don’t get our public transport system right. The people can’t get to where they are going,” she said.

An increase of police numbers was also on Ms Hermans’ agenda, adding people needed to feel safe in their own home.

“We have about 50 families a week moving into the city of Casey. The majority of those are moving into the Cranbourne area; so about 120 people a week. That’s a huge increase.”

she said.

Ms Hermans said Cranbourne had a great sporting community and facilities needed to be developed.

“We’ve got a great racecourse here.

We’ve got certain things that make this community really special and unique and we need to develop that.”

“Certainly the cinema issue has become a community issue and that’s something we’d certainly look at funding,” she said.

With the population rapidly growing, Ms Hermans said Cranbourne would need hospital facilities.

“We certainly need to have a good look and overhaul of where we are going to do our medical facilities and what we are going to provide for the people of Cranbourne.”

She also wanted to reduce the cost of living and have affordable housing as high rental costs made life difficult for families.

“It’s difficult to buy a home. Cranbourne is ridiculously expensive at the moment in terms of rental properties and in terms of what you get for that rental price,” she said.

“It does need a good overhaul and that’s something I would be sitting down and talking to Matthew Guy to reduce the cost of living so that we can actually have housing affordability”.

A Cranbourne trivia team appeared on a live Fox FM radio show on Thursday 14 September, at Chipmunks Playland at the Cranbourne Homemaker Centre, vying for the ultimate prize of $10,000.

ron presented a quiz show - ‘Are You Smarter Than ... Arena spectacular’ with trivia host and Australian TV game show royalty, Burgo, otherwise known as “Baby” John Burgess.

Cranbourne’s team ‘Beer Makes Me Smarter’ was one of 20 teams of four players who put their knowledge

to the test in the premiere event, which is in the regular show segment played at 6.20am each morning on Fox FM, where a listener gets the opportunity to take on Fifi or Fev in a round of answering a “best of three” trivia questions.

Cranbourne team member Dean Kelly said they were “really happy” at

being selected: “We registered online and got selected - unexpected.”

Cranbourne Home retail marketing manager Victoria Jenny Birt said: “It was such a delight to see the collaboration with Fox FM and a Cranbourne Home retailer, Chipmunks Play Centre. The team at Chipmunks and Fox

FM worked extremely hard to ensure the night was a success, with a team walking away with $10,000.

Suspicious device Police are investigating a suspicious device found in a sedan that crashed with a parked car in Ardmore Street, Cranbourne last weekend.

Police attended on Saturday 16 September and found the suspicious device in the sedan around 6am.

Arson and Explosive Squad members and Bomb Response Unit members attended and conducted safety checks of the device.

The suspect device was deemed safe and

all road closures were opened.

Channel Seven News reported two people ran off after the collision, leaving the device in the console of the silver sedan.

During an interview with Channel Seven News, Detective Sergeant Kurt Woods said: “It’s very concerning, especially with the unsafe nature of the whole thing.”

The pair from the car remain at large.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Chaplains could be called in to help prevent repeats of a recent youth-gang raid of a Springhill Shopping Centre supermarket in Cranbourne, under a Casey Council plan.

The idea’s proponent, Cr Amanda Stapledon, called for more police resources and tougher sentences as well as social programs involving the council, police, chaplains and community leaders.

It was part of a “measured and sensitive” approach to reinstate a feeling of community safety, she said.

At a council meeting on 19 September, Cr Stapledon said a minority of youths were causing concerns in the community.

“I don’t want to sensationalise that but I am experiencing people coming up and saying what are we going to do about the crime in our area. How can you help us?”

proposed that the council employ chaplains to help at-risk youth in shopping centres.

“We probably need to address it in that way.

“Chaplains can get there immediately - they don’t have to wait for office hours. They can respond very quickly.”

Cr Stapledon said she didn’t want to vilify a particular demographic, but sought to bring the community together to find a solution.

She said through no fault of their own, the offending youths had an “aversion to authority” due to being subject to war-torn circumstances.

They had known authority to be their oppressors rather than protectors, she said.

The council will write to the State Government and Opposition to urge for a police station to open in Clyde and for greater penalties to deter juvenile crime.

Narre Warren police found a collection of prohibited weapons after executing a warrant at Cranbourne on the evening of 12 September.

After being made aware of a person allegedly selling weapons on Facebook, police executed a warrant at a residential home on Latrobe Street at 6.30pm. Police seized 29 prohibited and controlled weapons including flick knives, swords, machetes and hunting knives.

A 39-year-old Cranbourne man is expected to be charged on summons with possessing prohibited and controlled weapons and dealing in prohibited and controlled weapons.

YMCA Casey recently announced YMCA Evolve, a leadership and self-development program for students in Grade 6, Year 8 and Year 10.

Chaplains to calm mobs Cr Stapleton’s pledge follows a recent theft whereby a group of 15-20 youths stormed a Coles store at Springhill Shopping Centre supermarket in Cranbourne on Saturday 9 September.

It is alleged the group entered the supermarket, located at a shopping centre on the corner of Thompsons and Narre Warren roads, shortly after 6pm. The youths allegedly grabbed a range of items and abused staff before leaving the store soon after without making payment.

Cr Stapleton said she recounted that chaplains were deployed successfully to a Cranbourne East incident, which was similar to the Springhill raid the weekend before.

The chaplains - who were called instead of police - were able to calm down the offenders in a “very good outcome”, she said.

Cash, cards stolen Letters after street assault

By Brendan Rees Narre Warren detectives are appealing for witnesses after a man aged in his thirties was attacked by an unknown assailant as he was walking on Keppel Drive, Hallam, at 6.45pm on Wednesday 9 August.

Two men described as of Islander appearance approached the victim, and one punched him in the face. While the victim was on the ground, the duo stole $15 cash and numerous cards before fleeing on foot.

The traumatised victim suffered swelling and a cut to his right eye and a sore elbow.

The men are described as 170cm tall, solid with dark short hair. One was wearing a black and white hoody and blue jeans and the other was wearing a black jacket.

On Wednesday 13 September the Cranbourne-Berwick News Facebook Page shared the story of a four-year-old girl who fell ill after being served with raw chicken nuggets from a McDonald’s outlet in Berwick. The girl’s mother, Sarah Dougherty, said she’d bought the nuggets as part of a Happy Meal treat from the store on Clyde and Homestead roads on the evening of 8 September.

On inspection, the meat within the warm nuggets was bright pink and raw.

The girl suffered “the runs” for at least the next four days. The story brought forward some strong opinions from readers and here is how they reacted online.

The winners were part of a store syndicate set up by Lynbrook Village News at Lynbrook Village Shopping Centre, which offered their customers a syndicate entry to share the cost of a bigger entry type and more

chances to win.

In addition to the division one win, the syndicate also won other divisional prizes with their five-game system, making the total prize worth more than $1.6 million or $130,738 per share.

Lynbrook Village News owner Tony Zhou was absolutely wrapt to have sold another division one winning entry.

“This is our second division one TattsLotto winning entry in

just four weeks,” he said.

“Our syndicate winners are regular customers so we are really pleased for the 13 winners.”

“They play a syndicate every week, but this was a new syndicate set up specifically for the $20 million Saturday Superdraw.”

Input on disability services sought City of Casey is seeking feedback from residents who receive disability care services from council about the potential impact on services with the soon-to-be-introduced National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). It follows advice from industry experts which recommends that the City of Casey not register to be a provider of NDIS services when it is rolled out to the Southern Melbourne region in September next year.

The NDIS is a key part of the Federal Government’s reform to the provision of disability service throughout Australia.

The NDIS is a new way of delivering services and support to people with a permanent disability, their carers and their families. It fundamentally changes the way people will access their disability services in the future, as well as the way service providers will do business. City of Casey chief executive officer Mike Tyler said while council was yet to make a final decision

on whether to become a service provider, it wanted to ensure that its residents were comfortable with the proposed changes.

“Council is aware that these future changes can create a lot of uncertainty throughout the community, and wants to assure its clients that we will continue to support them in the best way possible,” Mr Tyler said.

“The major change introduced due to the NDIS, is the way that funding will be administered as it will now go directly to the person or their carer, rather than the service provider.

“By receiving this funding directly, the person has a greater say over the services they receive, who they receive them from and when.”

Council has started to plan for this change, and engaged an industry expert to investigate if it should register to be a provider of NDIS services in the reformed environment.

The research undertaken included an analysis of costs and

capability, as well as a comparison of what other services are available throughout the community, and legal implications.

The first part of the review is complete, and it has been recommended that council does not register to be an NDIS service provider. Council will make a formal decision on the NDIS at a council meeting on Tuesday 19 September.

Should council decide not to register as a service provider, significant support will be provided to clients in the transition to the new arrangements.

Council will host an information session for existing clients, carers and their families on Wednesday 6 September at 6.30pm in the City of Casey Council Chambers located at the Civic Centre, Magid Drive, Narre Warren.

Council is committed to ensuring that all affected residents have the information that they need and are given ample opportunity to provide feedback.

Zooming in on skin cancer Dr Michael Safaie is the newest member of the team at Sun Patrol Officer and says that a skin cancer check once a year is vital.

He qualified as a doctor in 2005 and has been specialising in skin cancer for the past six years.

“I have a surgical background, but became very interested in dermatology and the skin due to the fact that Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world,” Dr Safaie said.

“Melanoma kills more young Australians aged 15 to 29 than any other cancer.”

He said Australia was leading the way in developing knowledge and new treatments and said he was keen to join a practice like Sun Patrol, which is at the cutting edge of the fight against the deadly disease.

“I am very privileged and blessed to be part of this group and help people get an early diagnosis,” he said.

“If skin cancer is diagnosed in the early stage the treatment is simple and it can be cured.

“It is very important that patients see a professional with proper knowledge in this area for early diagnosis.”

A check involves the doctor looking at the entire skin surface through a dermatoscope, which magnifies the skin cells under a special light. The doctor will also take photos of the skin surface.

An appointment lasts about 20 minutes.

Located just 15 minutes from Pakenham, Tynong North’s Mill Valley Ranch has been an iconic children’s and youth camp for 50 years.

Situated on 180 acres of farming and natural bushland bordering the Bunyip State Forest, Mill Valley Ranch has hosted thousands of children, youth and adults inviting them to experience the pure joy the horse riding and adventure activities the ranch has on offer.

Despite five decades of operation, visitors are still amazed at the 1880s-style village set-up as an old Australian colonial town in the picturesque Tynong North valley.

Thanks to the recent partnership with Baptist Camping

Victoria, the camp is still going strong with major renovations and a new indoor riding arena on its way.

And as Mill Valley Ranch office manager Sue Ellis explained, the ranch has plenty of activities on offer for these school holidays.

“School holiday programs, called roundups, cater for children and youth from age 10 to 17. Families can choose between the horse camp or the adventure camp, with both programs running from Sunday afternoon through to the Saturday morning each week of the school holidays,” Sue said.

“We still have a few spaces available for the next school holidays, but jump on to our

website and register quickly if you want to secure a spot for your child. We also run roundups right across the Christmas school holiday break.

“And for the eight to 10-year-olds wanting to experience horse riding at the ranch, we have a pony express weekend in both October and November.

“And don’t forget our open day on Saturday 4 November which will celebrate 50 years in the valley. Everyone is welcome!”

Holiday fun has no bounds There are many free activities throughout the City of Casey to keep kids busy in the school holidays.

One of the best places to take children during the holidays is one of the many Casey Cardinia Library Corporation branches.

The library corporation has a full program of events across its branches in Doveton, Endeavour Hills, Cranbourne, Hampton Park, Pakenham, Emerald and Narre Warren.

Lego is a perennial favourite among youngsters of all ages.

The Cranbourne Library is hosting a Lego in the Library session on Monday 25 September at 4pm, and a Lego Ninjago Adventure Challenge on Thursday 28 September.

Lego enthusiasts can also build together at Pakenham Library on Tuesday 26 September and at Hampton Park Library on Monday 2 October at 4pm.

Children will help Sport Boy unlock the key to Games World where they will work as a team to play as many games as they can. Children aged 8 to 12 can explore the computer coding language Scratch - an easy to use, but powerful programming language designed to introduce coding. Participants will be encouraged to get creative and make music, games and animations. No experience is necessary – beginners are welcome.

Throughout the fortnight, there will also be puppetry workshops, books readings, movie screenings and craft activities.

Wickers snuff all out

By David Nagel Relentless and ruthless domination has been the signature move of the Berwick Football Club in 2017 and the hallmark of its 47-point victory over Narre Warren at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday.

Grand final day provided rookie-coach Stewart Kemperman and his side with the perfect opportunity to rubber stamp an unbeaten season in the style it knows best - by sucking the life out of everything!

And it didn’t waste the occasion, producing a performance that showcased its eternal legacy of suffocating every living morsel in its path.

The Wickers squeezed the life out of the most potent attacking force in the competition, rendering it useless against the best defensive unit in the 13-year history of the league.

Some have come close, but no team has bettered the Wickers average concession of 44 points per game this season.

Narre Warren- well it had the better of the opening exchanges, looking sharp early, taking advantage of its red-hot form and the Wickers initial rustiness after a week off.

Stewart Scanlon led the way in the pressure stakes for the Magpies, who hit the scoreboard first through Dean Kelly.

But Berwick responded, and responded in the fashion of a great team, kicking the next eight goals and keeping the Magpies under wraps for close to an hour.

Tim Gunn launched the assault with two long bombs, aided by the breeze, followed by Jarrod Kemperman and Bryce Rutherford, before Will Arthurson’s goal made the biggest statement of the first term.

Not only did it kick the Wickers out to a 22-point lead, but space was found far too easily the squeezing was starting to take its toll.

And Berwick’s second quarter, against a fading wind, was typical of its overall versatility this year.

Just as they did against Cranbourne in the second semi-final, the Wickers turned their attention from an open style of play to a more circumspect method around the stoppages.

Gun midfielders like Madi Andrews, Bryce Rutherford and James Magner absorbed the Magpies best shot, helped by the ruckwork of Kemperman and Andrew Morozoff, while defender Michael Johnson was starring in defence.

In the absence of the injured Michael Riseley - Johnson’s value was immeasurable.

Berwick kicked 2.3 to 0.3 in the second term to extend its margin to 35 points at half time and then began to tick down the clock to just the eighth premiership in the club’s history.

Rutherford went bang, answered by two quick salvos from Hayden Stagg, before Gunn and Ash Smith had the engravers ready and waiting.

Smith’s signature goal - clinical from long range at the 21-minute mark - broke the Magpies spirit, with goals to Arthurson and Harry Money finishing off the job. Gunn finished with four, and Money three for the winners, while skipper Andrews was a thoroughly deserving winner of the best-on-ground medal.

The last quarter, well it was the longest of Narre Warren coach Heath Black’s career.

“It was a great effort to get there, but that last quarter was the longest quarter of my life,” Black explained.

“We tried to get a great team to stumble, we tried to apply external pressure, but their ability to absorb the pressure of going in unbeaten, to stick to their systems and defeat an opposition over 120 minutes, well it was very impressive to say the least.”

Black said several things stood out for him about Berwick on Saturday.

Berwick gun James Magner produced a powerhouse performance for the Wickers against the Magpies on Saturday.

“We felt like we had our fair share of possession in the first half, but their defensive net killed us, they played an open game and built a lead before turning it into a stoppage war, and with two minutes to go they were still screaming at each other in the back line,” he said.

“A great defence, the ability to score, great structures and a willingness to work hard ... what more can you say.”

As for Stewart Kemperman - well he thoroughly deserves the last word for the season.

A premiership in his first year of coaching, the moulding of a team that averaged 99 points for the season and conceded just 44 - eerily similar to Saturday’s scoreboard.

And only twice did they have 10 goals kicked against them this season - by unlikely sources in Doveton and Pakenham - while their two biggest challengers could kick no more than three goals against them in a quarter.

Statistically ... the Wickers are as good as any team of the last 13 years.

“The defence is probably my little baby, but the credit goes to the players for buying into it,” Kemperman said.

“They’ve worked hard and they’ve brought it to life. I view this group extremely highly, that’s my internal view, but I want everyone external to the group to view them that way as well. It was a really good opportunity today to show people how great they are.”

The premiership coach said the loss of Riseley was disappointing, but sort of exemplified the importance of the team-first mentality that had been nurtured at the club.

“It’s a real shame for Riser, because he’s such a star as you say, and he certainly would have added some real value to our team,” Kemperman said.

“But throughout the year, we’ve had a real team ethos on everything we do, the way we defend, the way we attack, it’s all built on team. Our job as coaches has been to give clarity to as many players as we can because at any given time you could be called upon to play a role ... and that’s the boat Joey (Jo West) found himself in today.”

Sperling’s hunger is mighty

By Nick Creely There is an insatiable hunger within Lachie Sperling and his Casey-South Melbourne team-mates ahead of the Victorian Premier Cricket season, which gets underway on 7 October against Ringwood.

The skipper - who saw his Swans bundled out of the 2016/17 finals race by eventual premiers Fitzroy-Doncaster in a semi-final - is itching to get on the park after a gruelling pre-season.

“It’s sort of crept up on us a little bit - the season starts in just over two weeks, but we simply can’t wait,” Sperling said.

“We know that we have to work even harder than last year to get back towards playing finals - the training standards have been really, really good.

“We’ve got plenty of games into our players now, so hopefully they just continue to develop for us going forward.

“It was exciting to play finals last year, but we start on zero points again now, so we want to get off to a good start.”

Under new coach Prabath Nissanka - a former Sri-Lankan international

cricketer - and highly-credentialed specialist coaches Naveed Nawaz and Jayde Herrick - the Swans have kept things relatively simple, focusing on developing an already stable list.

“There hasn’t been a huge transition with Prabath, he already knows us and our game - there’s been no drastic change, but it’s been more of our senior players taking on leadership roles with our younger players,” Sperling said.

“Along with Naveed and Jayde, they’ve been really good too - Naveed’s messages are really clear, he doesn’t try to change too much, but he’s a really good person to talk to about technique and mindset.”

With a host of quick bowlers, such as spearheads Nathan Lambden and Brendan Rose, developing quicks Jackson Fry, Leigh Diston and Cameron Brown, as well as a strong contingent of batsmen such as Devin Pollock, Luke Manders, Sperling, Michael Wallace, Ryan Eaton, Jordan Wyatt and Dylan Hadfield, the Swans aren’t suffering from a lack of options.

“Our depth is really important to us; it makes blokes hungrier for runs and wickets - it’ll be pretty similar to last

“Our bowling’s a major strength of us, we want to continually improve and try new things - and then as a batting group, we want to look at getting blokes to 600 or 700 runs for the year.

“We’ve also got James Long, who has done a bit of stuff with the Vic Under 17s, and he’s a really exciting

prospect - Ash Chandrasinghe is also looking really good at the moment and fingers crossed those two can have good seasons - they’ve got talent and are hungry to improve, there’s no point putting a ceiling on them but they’re young blokes.”

Entering his third season as Casey’s captain, Sperling - who showed glimpses of his immense talent with

449 runs last year - can’t wait to lead the side in an exciting period for the club.

“I’m enjoying the challenge, it’s really good fun, and I love leading the blokes we have as they’re all hungry and keen to do well,” he said.

“I just want to contribute - it’s the same with everyone I suppose, we just want to play in a winning side.”

By David Nagel Relief and immense satisfaction were etched on the face of Berwick’s champion midfielder Madi Andrews after the inspirational skipper led his side to the most dominant season in the club’s history on Saturday.

And Madi’s season - well it wasn’t that far behind!

In fact Andrews created his own slice of history, becoming the only player in the 13-year existence of the Casey Cardinia-South East Football Netball League to back up a league best-and-fairest award with a best-on-ground display in the 47-point grand final victory over Narre Warren.

The 26-year-old’s impact on Berwick is profound.

His two Norm Walker Medals for best player in the league have both co-incided with premiership seasons for his club you don’t get much bigger than that. But, as usual, the affable skipper was far more excited about talking his team up than taking individual plaudits.

“Seriously, it doesn’t compare, this is what I play footy for and always have,” Andrews said from the heaving middle of Holm Park Reserve.

“It feels great, you work hard for it and it’s been such a good year for the club and it’s really nice to cap it off with a premiership. Our work ethic just continues to grow and that’s something we pride ourselves on and it is nice to get the ultimate reward. We were just relentless, and that was our

The former Dandenong Stingray and Sandringham Dragon said he enjoyed sharing the last-quarter experience with some of the players that he started his footballing journey with.

“Obviously when you know the game is locked away it’s pretty nice to run around and absorb everything that’s going on,” he said.

“It doesn’t happen often so it was really great to enjoy that experience. I put a lot of my

heart and soul into the club so it is nice to actually get some reward. These are the guys I grew up playing footy with and that makes it feel even better.”

Coach Stewart Kemperman said Andrews was thoroughly deserving of his very-high standing at the club, singling him out first as a key player on the weekend.

“Let’s start with the skipper; in my opinion one of the greatest this club has ever seen, if not the greatest player this club has ever seen ... he was enormous,” Kemperman said.

Stingrays bundled out

By Nick Creely TAC CUP REVIEW - PRELIMINARY FINAL The Dandenong Stingrays battled hard but were ultimately outclassed by a hardened Geelong Falcons outfit in Sunday’s preliminary final at Simonds Stadium.

After an even first quarter, the ‘Rays got the jump in the second quarter to take a 12-point half-time lead, but ultimately the likes of Cassidy Parish, James Worpel and Cooper Stephens got on top in the middle, with the Falcons running away with a 10-goal to two last half.

Although it ends the season prematurely for the ‘Rays, who finished third at the end of the home-andaway season, coach Craig Black said his side never stopped trying against a class outfit who will go in as favourites in the decider at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

“The initial reaction was disappointment when you make it so far - we gave it every opportunity and we were up by two goals at half time and had the first three scoring shots of the third quarter but just couldn’t capitalise,” he said.

“All of a sudden we were 21-points at three quarter time, and we were just coming from a bit too far back against a really good side.

“When you make it to the top four, you play some really quality

“We’ve got the Futures Game next Friday before the grand final, so we have Bailey Williams, Bailey Schimdt, Riley Bowman, Will Hamill and Mitch Riordan all playing which is great for us, and then on grand final day we have the 18-year-olds in Aiden Bonar, Hunter Clark, Oscar Clavarino and Luke Davies playing on the ‘G, so it’s a great representation of our region,” Black said.

It’s been another highly successful campaign for the club out of Shepley Oval, with several young starts emerging out of the season.

“The first final, we had ten 17-year-olds playing, and on Sunday we had nine playing - to make it so far, and to give some 17-year-olds an early start in their development is a positive and hopefully it gives them an advantage heading into next year,” Black said.

“We’re really proud as a club of our program; we played a couple of finals in a really tough competition and got to develop our boys so we look at it as a success for sure.

“That’s what our program is all about for these young men, giving them an opportunity at TAC Cup and try and develop them to go as far as they can - our coaches and parents put in a lot of time and effort so it’d be great to be given a bit of a reward (on draft night).”

Eagles are true champions in full flight

By Nick Creely Only a champion team can lift itself off the canvas when the game looks buried, and find the will to win.

That’s exactly what the Doveton Eagles did on Saturday in what was a gripping grand final clash with Endeavour Hills at Jack Barker Oval in Cheltenham.

In a game of spits and spurts of momentum for each side, the Eagles found the winner late with a clutch set-shot from the 50-metre arc by Russell Robertson, 13.6(84) to 13.10(88).

It took just 30 seconds for the scoring to begin on Saturday, with Nick Gay running into an open goal to give the Falcons the dream start.

The Falcons - in their first senior grand final ever - settled into the contest quicker, and with the likes of Daniel Batson and Byron Hoe playing big roles in the first, managed to hold a slender nine-point quarter time lead.

A rev up by Eagles coach Simon Caldwell provided the catalyst for a quick response, with the underdogs producing a sensational second quarter, kicking six of the next seven goals to all of a sudden race out to a 22-point half time lead.

Eventual best-afield Michael Callinan was causing plenty of headaches through the midfield, often bursting out of a stoppage unopposed to give forwards Russell Robertson and Adam Read silver service.

A move to the midfield by Batson - and a tougher, more competitive showing in the middle - saw the Falcons immediately regain the momentum after the major break.

After three brain fades that resulted in 50 metre penalties, the Falcons made the Eagles pay for ill-discipline, with goals to Joel Marie, Chris Webber and the brilliant Batson pegging the margin back to five-points.

That momentum continued through to the early stages of the final term, with Nathan Strom and Hoe kicking goals to bring the margin all the way out to a game high 28-point lead.

A response was needed from the Eagles - and a response they got.

All of a sudden - with nothing left to lose - the Eagles started pulling the trigger, with skipper Corrie Wilson in particular starting to lift in the middle and hit his targets.

An outstanding bit of play by Jarrod O’Neill saw the margin cut back to a gettable 14-points only nine-

minutes into play, before Robertson eventually stole victory with only two minutes left with a clutch shot that sent the crowd into raptures.

Even though Robertson was well held for the most part by Falcons defender Ben Moriaty in an absorbing one-on-one battle, the ex-AFL man’s class shone through.

Coach Simon Caldwell was delighted with the victory.

“At three quarter time, we sort of just put what I thought was our best midfield in there, and we put some fresh blokes in there to give them a run, and we just stuck fat,” he said.

Caldwell was full of praise for his players, in particular Robertson, who shook off a tough day to kick the goal that got them in front with just minutes to play.

“Robbo’s had a few down games this year - in one match he kicked 6.13, but when he got the opportunity he just took it - that’s why he played at the highest level,” Caldwell explained.

“When the game needed to be won, he just slotted it from 50 out, and it got us over the line I guess.”

Meanwhile, in Division 2 action, Keysborough was knocked out of the premiership race after a surprising 20-point preliminary final loss to Murrumbeena on Saturday at Meade Reserve, 3.11(29) to 5.19(49).

After leading by nine-points at three quarter time, the Burra scored just a single point against a harsh breeze to be overrun.

Demons in league of their own

By Nick Creely VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE GRAND FINAL Casey will go down in history as the last ever team to win a premiership in the VFL’s Development League after a hard-fought 12-point victory over Williamstown.

With the league ending at the end of the season after almost 100-years of operation, the two sides battled it out for grand final glory in front of a packed crowd at Fortburn Stadium on Saturday.

The Seagulls kicked with the wind in the first quarter, and used it wisely to kick ahead to a 16-point quarter time lead despite the Dees kicking a wayward 2.6.

Mykelti Lefau got the Demons off to the perfect second quarter start to kick his first goal of the match, and the minor premiers found a spark, kicking three more goals and holding the opposition goalless to take the lead at half time.

The game tightened up dramatically in the third quarter, with goals becoming scarce, and the game remained in the balance ahead of an epic final quarter.

Daniel Johnston levelled the scores early in the last quarter with a major from outside the 50 metre arc, and the game remained neck-and-neck for the next 20 minutes as both sides traded goals.

With the Demons down by a point at the 21-minute mark, James Freeman stood up with a clever snap goal to put them in front, before Lefau kicked the sealer with just seconds to play to win the match.

Yilber Zijai (two goals) was awarded the Fred Hill Memorial Medal as best-afield in a classy display on a half forward, while Sean Dwyer (30 disposals), Mitch Cox (three goals) and Perry Lewis-Smith were all among the best for the Dees through the midfield.

Saturday’s premiership victory was the first flag that Casey have won since changing its name from Springvale in 2006, and it’s first VFL Reserve’s premiership since 1983.

Tooradin-Dalmore’s transformation from the ugly duckling to the soaring Seagull of the South East Football Netball League is complete after a commanding 39-32 triumph over Narre Warren in Saturday’s grand final at Holm Park Reserve.

The Seagulls secured their first premiership in 11 years, taking control of the contest in the first half before keeping the Magpies at bay after half time.

The scale of the achievement is quite remarkable really - especially if we wind the clock back just two years to the day. The Magpies won the first of their back-to-back premierships in 2015, while the Seagulls were licking their wounds after a winless season.

Just two years later and how fortunes have changed.

Coach Kelly Andrews signed on with the Seagulls and headed into the unknown, not fully aware of the challenge that confronted her in 2016.

“I went there not knowing what to expect, being winless, was I going to teach girls how to catch, but I was pleasantly surprised when I got there,” a thrilled Andrews said after the big win over the Magpies.

“There was a lot of skill and talent at the club that needed to be nurtured into a team, and that’s all I’ve done.”

Four players from that winless season enjoyed premiership success on Saturday, with Ebony Dolan, Alexandra Duff, Stacey Sawyer and club-

stalwart Shona Wells all part of the startling transformation.

Andrews brought in some big guns, with Alex and Jess Maher, Jess Cox, Sara Duncan, Emma Iacovou and Bec Kinna all heading to the nest, but it was the coaching of the locals that most appealed to her.

“That was big for me, I didn’t want to come in and replace the whole team, I wanted to coach and not just bring in the big guns,” she said.

“And I was very picky about the players we brought over, about the personalities and retaining the club culture. It’s a bit of a sisterhood now; we’re really honest with each other, no bullshit, which is great. The players are talented but you don’t win premierships without combining as a team.

“I’m rapt for them, all the hard work the girls have put in really showed out today. The girls put in extra work, and when they train they train at 100 per cent which can result in injuries, like happened to Sara (Duncan).

“But I’m so glad she got through the game ... she was extremely helpful today.”

Andrews was particularly happy for Wells the 300-gamer playing in her first A Grade premiership after missing 2006 for a friend’s wedding. Andrews said her team-mates owed her something after letting her down in her milestone match against Doveton in round 16.

“We absolutely stuffed up Shona’s 300th,” Andrews admitted.

“Doveton had it all over us and it was one of those selfish games where we probably tried a

little too hard. This makes up for it I think, Shona she said to me before that nobody remembers 300 games anyway ... just premierships.”

Andrews said there were no secrets to Saturday’s win, just good old fashioned team work.

“Beating your opponent one-on-one, doing the hard stuff, getting to where your defender doesn’t want you to be, and if we turn it over, get three feet hands over the ball, and help the person behind you take a ripper intercept,” Andrews said, before explaining the sacrifice required to be a champion team.

“That’s what is sometimes hard to teach people, to do the unselfish work that you don’t get the glory for,” she said.

“But I notice it and I’ll pat you on the back for it because the little things are so important. In the games we lost, we didn’t do those things well.”

Andrews said defeating a champion team like the Magpies - who were going for three premierships on the trot - made the victory all the more sweeter.

“They’re experienced finals campaigners and always very tough to beat, and there was little bit more incentive to play well against a side that has been there and done it before,” she said.

“We knew if we played our best we could win it, but it’s been a bit confusing with Narre Warren this year. We won, then lost easy, and then beat them pretty comfortably so we knew we had to play our best to get across the line.”
