The Light the Night fund-raising event holds a special place in the heart of local volunteer, Anne Hodgson.

This year’s Leukaemia Foundation event is even more poignant for Anne because it will mark 10 years since her initial diagnosis of acute myeloid leukaemia and subsequent bone marrow transplant in 2007.

In remission after her successful transplant, Anne has been actively involved with Light the Night, participating in every event since 2009.

At the time of her diagnosis and treatment, Anne has described how supportive the Leukaemia Foundation Support Services staff were in guiding her through a time that was filled with uncertainty and many questions.

Having had the support of the Leukaemia Foundation, which provided her with light in a time of darkness, Anne has since been focused on returning this light, by volunteering with the foundation and helping raise awareness around blood cancer.

Anne has opened the Light the Night walk in Lilydale, and has worked hard each year to collaborate with her team to raise funds as part of the event.

Anne described how emotional and moving the Light the Night events are, and how special it is to see communities come together in support of those going through or affected by blood cancer.

“I got involved with Light the Night because I’ve had a blood cancer ... it was just a way to repay the Leukaemia Foundation for all that they’d done for me,” she said.

“One year, I volunteered to help.

It’s a nice feel, this one, because it’s really community based. A lot of people come together.

“We had, I think, 700 last year. Such a beautiful spot ... at night it’s just a trail of blue, white and gold lanterns.”

The collection of so many lanterns in one location, each signifying an individual’s connection to blood cancer, is an incredible sight to Anne.

This year, Anne will again volunteer and help to run the Lilydale Light the Night event on Friday 29 September, from 5pm.

Forum ponders spike in crime

More than 50 people attended the Yarra Valley Law and Order Forum hosted

by Eildon MP Cindy McLeish and Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe at Woori Yallock on Thursday, 16 September.

Shadow Attorney-General John Pesutto and Shadow Minister for Corrections, Police and Community Safety Edward O’Donohue fielded questions around youth offending, failings of the justice system, plea-bargaining, jails, drugs, mental health, accountability, re-building respect for authority, police resources and local crime.

Former Victorian Police Commissioner, Kel Glare, also spoke, defending the Police In Schools Program he introduced in 1989, but which was ditched in 2006.

“It is essential to get kids early and educate them as good citizens,” he said.

He was also critical of VicPol’s approach to dealing with situations which he described as reactive and

risk averse.

“The troops on the ground are working their backsides off, but are hamstrung at every turn; they are no longer allowed to make decisions on the street,” he said.

He said VicPol had become so risk averse that officers were scared to act and the hierarchy scared to make a mistake.

A retired Yarra Valley police sergeant supported Mr Glare’s call for a return to the Police in Schools Program, saying it built respect for the law.

He also urged Mr Pesutto and Mr O’Donohue to look at reform of victim restitution legislation to make court orders enforceable and send messages of accountability and deterrence.

The impact of drug manufacturing, dealing, and using, was a recurring theme.

“With druggies, when do they go from becoming law-breakers to becoming victims,” one audience mem-

ber asked.

He lamented the lack of discipline available to parents and others in charge of children, calling for a return of corporal punishment.

Jeff, a member of a volunteer-run urban rehabilitation program, argued for more drug rehabilitation funding.

“We know a high percentage of people in jail have been drug-affected and of the scourge of ICE in the Yarra Valley,” he said.

He said the program, which got no government funding, was cost effective, working ‘quite well’ but that funding was too hard to get for such programs.

He also spoke of the impact of mental health on crime, saying a huge percentage of people entering drug rehabilitation have severe trauma backgrounds that have gone untreated.

Accounts were given, and concerns raised about the lack of police response in the Yarra Ranges, with a strong view that the region is under-resourced.

Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate Michael Fineberg.

A warrant has been issued for the 44-year-old’s arrest over bail and theftrelated offences.

Police have released an image of Fineberg in the hope someone recognises him and can provide information on his whereabouts.

He is described as 184cm tall with a medium build, blue/grey eyes and fair hair.

Fineberg is known to frequent the Heidelberg, Blackburn, Brighton, Elwood and Ferntree Gully areas.

Mount Evelyn fire Two women and a three-year-old girl were lucky to escape a house fire in Mount Evelyn on 16 September.

The fire was reported to have started from a candle that was left unattended and was only being used due to a blackout in the area. However, further investigations suggest it may have been related to an electrical fault. On the same night, several houses in the Mount Evelyn area lost power due to a driver colliding with a power pole on Hereford Road at 7.45pm.

CFA services arrived at the home at 10.30pm to find the building ablaze.

The women, both 20, and the young girl were unharmed as they fled the home.

Mount Evelyn CFA members were also able to rescue two dogs and some fish from the house.

“What do you think (former Victorian Premier) Henry Bolte would do if he were here today?” someone asked.

The forum is part of a Victoriawide Coalition campaign ahead of the 2018 State Election set for Saturday, 24 November, 2018.

Police are seeking information in relation to a series of thefts from motor vehicles and a theft of a motor vehicle on Sunday night into Monday morning.

Vehicles were broken into on Old Belgrave Road and Darling Avenue, with the offenders attempting to steal some of these vehicles.

Overnight on 12 September, tools were stolen from a ute on Old Belgrave Road and a 1991 Nissan Patrol bearing registration plates 'FATTIE’ was also stolen from Darling Avenue.

Sergeant Carolyn Sunderland from Belgrave police station suggested owners of tools engraved them to help police find their owners.

“We encourage people to engrave or ID their tools or property to ensure that they have their things properly identified, that way we can get these items returned to them.”

“Power tools are hard to get back if we can’t identify them, and so if they have some form of identification we can link it back to the proper owner,” Sgt Carolyn said.

Deadly trade is under fire

By Peter Douglas La Trobe MP Jason Wood has continued to advocate on animal welfare policy, this time calling for Australia to act and close up markets for elephant and rhinoceros horn.

Last year, Mr Wood was integral in leading the charge to ban testing cosmetics on animals in Australia, as well as in 2015 helping implement a ban on the importation of lion trophies and body parts.

Much of this change has come through an unlikely alliance with the Animal Justice Party, as well as support from Ferny Creek’s Donalea Patman OAM from For the Love of Wildlife.

In his speech to Federal Parliament on 4 September, Mr Wood said Australia remained an integral part of the international ivory trade, with the domestic market for ivory and rhino horn remaining unregulated.

Mr Wood said Australians continued to import ivory in Australia for personal use.

“All those people are bringing back what they think are knick-knacks into Australia, little items they think would look nice on their mantelpiece, but, in actual fact, they’ve come from the death of a rhino or an elephant,” he said.

Mr Wood said Australian officials had this year seized 300 imports of elephant ivory and made 70 seizures of rhinoceros horn.

There had been no prosecutions.

Mr Wood said action needed to be taken.

“One elephant dies every 15 minutes, which means that, just while parliament has been sitting today, nearly 40 more of these noble beasts have lost their lives purely for the value of their tusks,” he said.

“Imagine the horror of the

rhinos when a poacher goes up behind a mother rhino, slices its ankles with a machete and then slashes its face off while still alive to take the rhino horn - and this can be with a young rhino nearby.”

Meanwhile, Ms Patman said there were obvious incentives for criminals.

A pair of ivory tusks can fetch as much as $30,000 at Australian auction houses, while a carved rhino horn libation cup brings as much as $67,000.

“There’s a general perception that if rhino horn or ivory is in our country, then it must be legal,” she said.

“Yet it’s impossible to age these products just by looking at them.”

“With auction rooms, antique dealers, bric-a-brac and vintage stores left to self-regulate, illegal products can easily be laundered through our domestic market.”

Works are go for reser ve

By Peter Douglas Yarra Ranges Council has paved the way for the further development of the lower oval at the Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve.

Around 100 members of the Mount Evelyn Football Club were present at council’s 12 September meeting, held at the Montrose Town Centre, to support the club’s bid to develop the site so it can better accommodate its junior and women’s teams.

The development forms much of the Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve Master Plan, which passed the council chambers after much debate, with some amendments attached.

The master plan will allow for the upgrades to the lower reserve which include erecting an electronic scoreboard and resurfacing the oval, as well as improved drainage so the club can gain access to the ground even in the event of heavy rainfall.

However, passing the draft plan was far from straightforward, with community representatives speaking both for

and against the proposal.

President of the Mount Evelyn Junior Football Club, Mal Darke, said the plan was “well-balanced” and “reflected the community feedback” received after consultation.

He said the works were “urgent” and would have a significant positive impact on the community.

“Improvements to the lower oval are urgently needed to accommodate our junior players and provide training spaces supporting female players,” Mr Darke said.

“Clubs urgently require new clubrooms in-line with AFL requirements in order to accommodate female participation, without the inherent problems we’re currently experiencing with the ageing, outdated and gender-unfriendly facilities.

“This master plan provides essential improvement we require as clubs to continue to engage and retain our young people.

“We can sustain the teams we have, but desperately need the infrastructure.”

Though the value of sporting clubs was never in question, councillors Tim Heenan and Mike Clarke, in particular, believed more needed to be achieved through the plan.

Cr Heenan said he wouldn’t support the original draft plan.

“This site has significant ecological value ... the proposed master plan needs to ensure that any intended works or activities are consistent with the legislative requirements and protection and enhancement of flora and fauna within this site,” Cr Heenan said.

“Does this master plan achieve this?

I believe it does not.”

Cr Clarke agreed the plan had fallen short. “(It’s) not addressing everything the club really needs,” Cr Clarke said.

“I believe council needs to work a lot harder to help them ... achieve the goals that they wish to achieve ... particularly with the growth of the women’s game.

“I don’t feel like that environmental side has been adequately covered; in fact, it seems to be just more of the same.”

The amendment includes: All floodlights to be checked to prevent light-spill; That if works are to be completed, they need to be formed so there isn’t water run-off into the creek from the oval; Facilitating access to alternative sporting grounds to serve the longterm training needs of the junior and senior clubs; Extra tree planting along the north and north-eastern side of the netball courts, which will add density and reduce light-spill; The establishment of a reserve committee of management, which will include all key stakeholders; Any new grass type is to be determined in consultation with Melbourne Water, Yarra Ranges Council’s environment team and a sports turf specialist; The level of noise from the siren is to be further investigated by council officers and AFL Yarra Ranges.

Cr Terry Avery said he wanted to ensure there was no significant run-off from the oval, which would adversely affect the nearby waterway.

In speaking against the plan, nearby resident and long-term Powerful Owl watcher, Clare Worsnop, reiterated her stance that developments at the lower reserve could adversely impact on the breeding habits of a pair of Powerful Owls.

Ms Worsnop called on the plan to be abandoned.

“It’s significant that for the 32 years I’ve lived here, these (Powerful Owls) have successfully raised young - until 2015 (when) they abandoned their nest ... again in 2016 and 2017,” Ms Worsnop said.

“This coincides with the rapid expansion of the Mt Evelyn junior teams and the introduction of women’s football, resulting in longer training times and extra games ... extra lights and noise.”

After much debate, Cr Len Cox introduced an amendment to the plan,

Kids take to ecology

By Derek Schlennstedt Students at 12 Yarra Ranges schools will learn about healthy waterways, biodiversity and reducing pollution thanks to Yarra Ranges Council’s Grants for Community.

The Environmental Education for Kids (EEK!) project is run by Dr Annette Anderson and Jessica Lazarus, and aims to teach primary school students about the importance of healthy waterways over five workshops.

Dr Anderson said the program also taught leadership skills to the students, who learn about waterways over the first four workshops, before presenting their learnings and activities back to other year levels in the final workshop.

“Through four workshops, students will learn about local waterway health, biodiversity, issues with stormwater and simple ways they can preserve this water resource and all the life within it,” Dr Anderson said.

“Educating and engaging primary school children about these issues will foster a sense of community ownership, leading to active engagement in long-term protection of their local environment.

“They will become citizen scientists, passing knowledge onto their peers, family and community.”

Back off on Billy As one of Puffing Billy’s thousand-plus volunteers, with decades of contributing, I rebut Carey Williams’ letter, ‘Constant Puff’, (Mail, 5 September).

Consider the following: 1. Our locomotives do burn coal (some diesel). Modest amounts consumed per fortnight would not equal 30 seconds worth consumed by thermal power stations supplying power to Williams’ home via the grid.

2. Locomotive whistles, a bane to your correspondent, delight our enthralled passengers, motorists and most locals. Lyrebirds in nearby forests even imitate them, an affirmation if ever one is needed.

3. Williams’ concerns resmoke and unburnt particulates as health hazards are grossly exaggerated. Pollution from thermal power stations, industry and transport far exceed the miniscule emissions from our railway. Aged 76 years, and with decades of railway volunteering on trains, has caused zero impact upon my lung health.

5. The railway’s responsible fuel reduction within its narrow corridor is to protect neighbours’ properties from fire hazards. Wildlife still abounds including wombats, wallabies, myriads of bird species plus feral deer. Endangered vegetation is surveyed and protected.

6. Our railway is a labour intensive operation (hence, we volunteers without which it would fail).

7. It is also an expensive enterprise to run reliably 364 days per year and occasion-

Sadie shines in unison

By Derek Schlennstedt Primary school students across the country are busy practising for the ‘Music: Count Us In’ initiative.

Created in 2006 by Music Australia, the Count Us In initiative is celebrating its 11th year, and is Australia’s biggest schools program.

The program encourages young people to become passionate about music and music education, and invites students from across the country to sing the same song, on the same day.

That song is created by students for students, and one of the very lucky people chosen to help create this year’s program song is Yarra Valley Grammar student and Belgrave resident Sadie Mustoe.

With more than four instruments under her belt and an album, Sadie was one of the talented five students across Australia chosen to help write this year’s program song called ‘Shine Together’.

And on 2 November, Sadie will join with hundreds of thousands of students across the country simultaneously singing Shine Together, a song she co-wrote with John Foreman OAM, X Factor Australia finalist Taylor Henderson and four peers.

“I play violin, it’s been my main instrument, and I’ve been playing that for nine years, but I also play piano, guitar and ukulele as well as euphonium,” Sadie said.

“I like music, it’s basically my whole life and what I do, it just comes naturally to me, I just enjoy doing it so much.”

Sadie has been writing songs since she was six, and at age 13 has already released an album of her own compositions called ‘girl on the hill’.

Sadie and her four peers were given just one day to create the program song for this year’s Count Us In. Her first time collaborating with other artists, Sadie said she enjoyed the opportunity to work with others in a creative

“It was so much fun, it was really good having everyone’s input, because we got stuck a few times with the lyrics, and it’s good having seven minds on the job.”

“I feel privileged to promote music to a wider community, to express my love for music and to work with other artists in

something bigger than I could have ever imagined,” Sadie said.

This year’s Celebration Day is on Thursday 2 November, and schools can still sign-up and participate by visiting the Music Australia website.

Put in a corner Behavioural assessment rooms being built under the State Government’s $40 million plan to prevent violence and aggression towards hospital workers will make hospitals safer workplaces.

Work has started on behavioural assessment rooms in emergency departments at Angliss Hospital in Upper Ferntree Gully and at Maroondah Hospital in East Ringwood.

The government campaign against occupational violence aims to remind the community, health workers and paramedics that violence and aggression are not accepted or tolerated as “part of the job.”

Minister for Health Jill Hennessy says the government is doing everything it can to support those who care for and save the lives of Victorians.

“Violence and aggression towards our health workers will not be tolerated,” she said.

Behavioural assessment rooms are separate areas that are purposebuilt for staff to better assess and manage patients who present to emergency departments exhibiting concerning behaviour.

It is estimated that up to 95 per cent of healthcare workers have experienced physical or verbal abuse while caring for others and saving lives.

In what was a hugely successful day, guests enjoyed a host of activities, which were intended to be both enjoyable and educational. Benny debuts EP to home crowd

By Derek Schlennstedt Winner of the “Best Aboriginal Act of the Year” at 2016’s The Age Music Victoria Awards, Yorta Yorta singer/ songwriter, Benny Walker is visiting the Dandenong Ranges to unveil his latest EP at the Upwey Skylark Room on 6 October.

Hailing from regional Victoria, Benny Walker has performed alongside some of Australia’s finest songwriters including Archie Roach, Blue King Brown, Tim Rogers and Vika and Linda Bull.

As a proud Yorta Yorta man, who grew up playing in the bush and swimming in the Murray River, Benny holds strong to the premise that he creates music, and dedicates the majority of his time to touring, simply because he is drawn to it.

This is imbued in his love songs and epic tales which are mixed with passion for the land, the people, and summer vibes.

Although taking a short break from song-writing, Benny is now back with a new sound which, while different, is no less impressive.

The latest offering from Benny Walker, called Undercover, all started with the track ‘Oh No You Don’t’, a song of reflection and of Benny moving forward personally.

His latest single “Ghost” is part of the EP release and is a groovy, soulful number with silky smooth vocals and a powerful message.

Never one to shy away from the bigger picture, Benny’s EP also addresses racism and the experiences he himself has been through as an Indigenous person.

“Jan and I are both big fans of old blues and soul music, so we used those influences as the platform for the EP,” Benny said.

‘Stay In My Arms’, ‘Save’ and ‘Without You’ are turbulent love songs, ‘Ghost’ is politically charged, whilst ‘Undercover Of My Skin’ speaks of living as an Aboriginal Australian with lighter skin and the experience of blatant racism either directed at me or indirectly as they were unaware of my heritage.”

Benny has taken to the road as part of his solo tour titled Wine Women and Sou,l which is playing at smaller more intimate venues where Benny can engage with the audience and switch between guitar and piano to soulfully highlight his new songs.

Benny will play at the Upwey Skylark room on 6 October.

Change on the fringes of our climate woes

By Derek Schlennstedt Burrinja calls on artists of all disciplines to respond to climate change on the fringes and be part of the second Burrinja Climate Change Biennale $9000 Art Award.

Applications are now open to emerging and established artists to be part of the second Burrinja Climate Change Biennale.

“This is such an important exhibition and topic for our generation.“ “It’s wonderful to see so many talented local and national artists presenting work about climate change - being part of this conversation here in the Dandenong Ranges,” Burrinja curator JD Mittmann said.

Global in nature, national in scope and local in action, the Burrinja Climate Change Biennale provides a platform of events addressing one of the most pressing topics of our time.

Uniquely situated in the temperate rainforest micro-climate of the Dandenong Ranges on Melbourne’s eastern fringes, Burrinja’s location

offers the perfect backdrop for local and global community knowledge networks to share, learn and expand through the Biennale’s wide-ranging public program and macro-themes.

At the centre of the Burrinja Climate Change Biennale is its award exhibition, which provides a space for artists to engage creatively and imaginatively with aspects of climate change.

The exhibition invites and encourages the collaboration of science and arts, through critical thought and creative practise.

The award exhibition will be on display at Burrinja Gallery from 11 November 2017 to 11 February 2018 and three awards will be offered to those who exhibited, including: a $7500 Acquisitive Award, $1000 Young Artist Award (artist under 26) and a $500 People’s Choice Award.

The submission deadline is 4pm on 29 September and the official opening and award ceremony will be held at Burrinja on Sunday 12 November at 2pm.

In The Emoji Movie, Sony’s latest animated children’s movie, emojis are sentient entities living inside mobile phones, and their jobs involve physically portraying the emotion or concept they represent. Gene (T.J. Miller) is a ‘meh’ emoji unable to hold on to his required expression, and desperately wants to fit in and fulfil his duty as ‘meh’.

The Emoji Movie isn’t very funny, with flat, very obvious gags, and is intrinsically cynical in how it essentially advertises smartphone apps and texting culture to young children, but it seems that many mainstream critics are acting just as cynically toward the film in how they’re condemning it so fiercely.

Setting aside the general tastelessness of the premise, The Emoji Movie is a colourful, lively film with touching themes and solid character development.

Gene is a charming protagonist, Jailbreak (Anna Faris) is a bold, wilful and kind ally, and these emojis have a gratifying relationship of mutual respect and encouragement. Hi-5 (James Corden) is a hyperactive, unnecessary comic relief character, but still has some endearing moments. The film engages subtly with themes of responsibility, conformity and individualism, and Smiley (Maya Rudolph) is a fairly compelling villain, with her ever-smiling persona hiding a despotic cruelty.

The Emoji Movie is a satisfying adventure and moving personal journey beyond the consumerist tackiness of its premise.

But then, I’m one of those heathens who didn’t really like The Lego Movie, so what do I know?

Yarra Glen got off to a blinding start kicking with the breeze, scoring 8.5 to one goal to have a lead at quarter time by 47 points.

Yarra Glen then increased their lead to 60 points early in the second quarter before Belgrave bounced back, holding Yarra Glen to 3.3 while they kicked 5.6 and reduced the lead at half-time to 32 points. Yarra Glen had all the run and looked home and hosed. It was just going to be a case of maintaining possession and playing smart controlled footy.

Belgrave, however, came out in the third term and completely dominated play, giving Yarra Glen no opportunities. The Magpies piled on 6.5 to 1.1 to take a slim lead by two points at three-quarter time. By now it was game on and a last quarter befitting a grand final followed.

Yarra Glen could not break through the Belgrave onballers as they played behind the ball and were first to the contest in the last. Yarra Glen was playing catch-up footy and could not get the momentum that they had in the first term. Belgrave were impressive and kicked away with 6.4 to 2.3. Yarra Glen never gave up but was outplayed by a better team on the day.

Division 2 Seniors Preliminary Final Olinda Ferny Creek 20.14(134) d Healesville 5.8(38) Olinda Ferny Creek have progressed to the grand final next week in emphatic fashion and will take on Woori Yallock. Olinda kicked with the wind in the first term and put on 4.4 to 2.2 to take a lead of 12 points into the quarter-time break. Healesville could not capitalise in the second quarter and could only manage 2.4 to Olinda’s 7.4 and the margin had blown out to 30 points at half-time. It certainly was not a winning lead if Healesville could regroup and come back out fighting.

There were not many goals kicked but most were kicked by Olinda and they increased their lead to 50 points at the last break. Healesville could only manage a single goal in the third quarter.

Both sides kicked 1.4 in the first quarter so it was basically a restart in the sec-

ond. It was a high scoring second term with Healesville getting the advantage kicking 5.1 to four goals to take a lead of eight points into half time. Wandin turned it around in the third quarter and made a deficit of eight points a lead of six points going into the last. It was a scrappy, low-scoring last term but Wandin managed to hold Healesville to just one goal and kicked two themselves to win by nine points at the final siren.

Athletes in final round of XCR17 on the fast and flat YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS The final round of XCR17 was held at the fast, flat Princes Park, Carlton on Saturday morning.

Ever-changing conditions greeted close to 2000 athletes for the final round, team relays around the 3.2km circuit.

Yarra Ranges Athletics had 14 teams competing in the various grades and divisions finishing with the best placings being a first, second, third and fourth.

Congratulations to the Girls U14s,

Girls U16s and Women’s U20 teams for winning medals and the Boys U16 team narrowly missing bronze.

The club welcomed some debutants this week including Hayden Rooke, Ashley Rooke, Danielle Graves and Tom Barker.

Great to also see some old faces back in time for the track season.
