Latin culture set to come alive Latin food, music and dance will descend on Springvale for a two-day celebration.

The September Latin Festival will showcases the Latin culture, known for food, wine, dancing, a strong sense of family, vibrancy and passion, and is expected to attract more than 15,000 visitors each year.

It brings together community groups to showcase Latin American cuisine, art, dance, music and language.

There’ll be a kids corner, seniors hub and young Latin time area, cooking demonstrations and a stallholder of the year award.

The September Latin Festival will run from 11am to midnight on Saturday 23 September and 10am to 10pm on Sunday 24 September at Sandown Racecourse, 591-659 Princes Highway, Springvale.

Tributes for hero The local community is mourning Noble Park man Shaun Oliver who drowned trying to save a stranger’s child on a NSW beach on Sunday 10 September.

The 32-year-old has been lauded as a hero after diving into rough seas on Wollongong’s City Beach to rescue a 12-year-old child who had become caught in the large waves.

A local surfer ultimately saved the child but

Mr Oliver was swept out to sea. He was on business at the time, and was due to fly back in to Melbourne the next day.

Mr Oliver was a popular sportsman and a talented footballer and a passionate supporter of the Keysborough Football Netball Club after playing with the club as a junior and a senior.

“It’s no surprise to anyone at the club that he would put himself in that situation and without question would do what he did,” Keysborough Football Club’s Matt Ferguson said.

“Shaun consistently showed throughout his time at Keysie that he was both courageous and selfless on and off field, the ultimate team mate.

“Post his playing days, Shaun continued to be a very well-liked person around the club. He was one of those supporters who was never negative, a really fantastic person.”

while his close friend, Jason Neville, said a few words as part of the pre-game tribute.

The funeral will be held on Thursday 21 September and friends and family will gather directly after at the social rooms at Rowley Allen Reserve, Keysborough.

Shaun leaves behind his wife Carla and three young children.

Tigers song enough to bring man out of coma

In Brief Residents grab burglar Greater Dandenong residents thwarted wouldbe burglars in two separate incidents that occurred just minutes apart.

The first occurred in Elmbank Drive, Keysborough, about 3.30pm on Monday 11 September.

The residents were home when a 14-year-old boy allegedly jumped a fence and tried to enter the house.

They grabbed the boy and held him until police arrived.

He was later released pending charges.

About 5pm the same night a 22-year-old Springvale man tried entered a home in Wareham Street, Springvale.

Three people were home and called police when they saw the man.

He was charged and bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 10 November.

By Casey Neill Singing the Richmond Tigers theme song brought her brother out of a coma, says a Dandenong North woman.

Jennifer Bearham describes herself as a diehard fan of the yellow and black and was bursting with excitement after the AFL side’s qualifying final win over Geelong at the MCG on Friday 8 October.

“I hugged a stranger in the crowd,” she said.

“I wasn’t with my family but I wasn’t alone at all.”

The club will play either West Coast or Greater Western Sydney in a preliminary final on Saturday 23 September.

They’ll be vying for a place in the Saturday 30 September Grand Final and a shot at this year’s AFL Premiership.

“I’ve got tickets for the Grand Final guaranteed,” Jennifer told the Journal.

Richmond won its last premiership on her birthday back in 1980.

She was hoping for another to mark her 50th, but will settle for a win a few days after her 54th birthday on Wednesday 27 September.

It’d brighten what’s been a tough year.

“I have a spinal injury, a workplace injury from years ago,” Jennifer said.

“It got worse, I started having lots of falls. The last fall caused my left foot to become paralysed.

“Even my little walker has got tigers stickers all over it.

“They’ve given me so much joy.

“It’s the highlight of my year.”

Her eldest son is in the Richmond cheer squad and her brother is a life member.

“He was in a coma from a workplace injury at a prison - he was a prison officer,” she said.

“It’s just so special to our family. We’re living it, breathing it.” A friend of Jennifer’s passed away last year and she and her son placed a Richmond scarf and a T-shirt signed by captain Trent Cotchin on his coffin.

“I didn’t realise but they didn’t put it with him when they cremated him,” she said.

They were returned earlier this month.

“My son wore the scarf and I wore the T-shirt,” Jennifer said.

“It’s really special.

“I think they were in the big grandstand in the sky.”

Dog rescued in city fire drama Firefighters managed to save a dog as fire ripped through a Dandenong shop and sent a blanket of smoke over the CBD. CFA and MFB crews were called to extinguish a blaze that tore through two double-storey stores at 275 and 277 Lonsdale Street about 1.30am on Wednesday 13 September.

It appeared the building housed a business called Bargain Giftware. The building was well alight when crews arrived on the scene.

CFA issued an advice message for the Dandenong area about “a significant amount of smoke” affecting the area and road closures “to enable fire fighters to work safely in the area”.

They were able to rescue a dog from the back of one of one of the shops.

Rostered duty officer Gary Bryant said: “The breathing apparatus van was called for from Frankston and the mobile communications van was called for from Patterson River.”

Nine CFA trucks from Dandenong, Hallam, Frankston, Patterson River and Hallam attended as well as three MFB trucks.

Police are appealing for public help to find a missing Dandenong teen.

Taamo Varu, 15, (pictured) was last seen at his home on Birdwood Avenue on the morning of Friday 8 September.

Family and police have concerns for his welfare due to the length of time that he has been missing.

Police released an image of Taamo in the hope someone could provide information on his current whereabouts.

Two houses damaged by fires Greater Dandenong police are investigating suspicious fires in two abandoned homes.

Police and fire crews were called to a vacant house in Cleeland Street, Dandenong, about 4am on Thursday 7 September.

The blaze caused extensive damage to the kitchen.

No one was present at the time. The cause was deemed suspicious.

About 8am on Saturday 9 September, the CFA was called to a home occupied by squatters on Springvale Road in Springvale.

That fire caused extensive damage to the back of the home.

Police are appealing for witnesses to both fires.

ATM cash grab fails Would-be thieves tried to steal a Keysborough ATM using a rope and a ute.

Police said their attempt at the Keysborough South Shopping Centre about 3.50am on Saturday 9 September was unsuccessful.

Witnesses reported seeing someone park a white ute near the ATM, tie a rope around the machine and try to dislodge it.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Liam Comrie said the attempt caused extensive damage to the ATM and doors to the shopping centre.

He appealed for any witnesses to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

20 years ago 15 September 1997 The Hills are alive - name change fails An objection to a proposed suburb name change in Casey has backfired.

The Office of the Place Names Committee, commissioned by the State Government to define suburbs throughout the State, suggested Lysterfield be renamed Endeavour Hills. The council’s suggested name of Lysterfield South was challenged by a resident.

Objector Mr Trevor Ratlciffe wanted Lysterfield Hills.

“I felt the name Lysterfield South was inaccurate because Lysterfield lies in the

northern aspect of the city so I sent in my suggestion of Lysterfield Hills.

“I thought this was an appropriate name because the suburb abuts Endeavour Hills,” Mr Ratcliffe said.

The objection and council’s recommendation was submitted to the committee which decided on Endeavour Hills.

“I was quite surprised the committee came up with that name because I don’t think it reflected the views of myself or council,” Mr Ratcliffe said.

“I think the most important thing is to keep the name Lysterfield in the title because it is of some historical significance to the suburb and credits its founder.”

5 years ago 17 September 2012 New plant to treat contaminated soil A second contaminated soil treatment plant

will be built in the Dandenong area. Renax Group chief executive Peter Mirkou announced works were set to start on the four hectare Ordish Road plant, which will treat up to 70,000 tonnes of soil a year by 2014.

He said it would reduce the amount of contaminated soil going to landfill by 20 per cent.

Most of the treated soil will be reused for items such as compost and concrete.

A permit for the plant was rejected by Greater Dandenong Council but approved on appeal by Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

It was also approved by the Environmental Protection Authority.

Residents against Toxic Waste in the South East spokeswoman Thelma Wakelam raised doubts about whether there would be a market for the plant as well as the plants at Lyndhurst and Altona.

Butterbing’s got the cookie bling Butterbing started as an honesty stall on a Fitzroy North front porch.

Simone Clark now sells her Dandenong South-baked sandwich cookies to cafes across the country.

“It started in my home kitchen in 2013,” she said.

She’d place baked goods in a fridge on her front porch and neighbours would grab them and leave cash behind.

“I would also bake and deliver to nearby cafes either by foot or by bike,” Simone said.

“From there our customer base grew.”

She moved into a commercial kitchen in Eumemmerring through a sublease she found on Gumtree, and recently into a Dandenong South factory space.

“We’re pretty much dotted all over cafes around Australia now,” she said.

Butterbing exclusively makes brownie cookie sandwiches filled with butter cream and ganache.

EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL Simone was the first to market with the product so had to pioneer the packaging and more.

“We have over 50 recipes of butter cream on rotation,” Simone said.

“It’s always the same chocolate cookie. We just change the centre.

“Initially when the bakery started I had a whole range of products and my focus was very different.

“About six months into that I started making these cookie sandwiches. They just were an instant hit.

She rebranded as a cookie company instead of a general baking company.

“Typically cookies are quite dry. Ours are really quite the opposite of that.

“They’re, basically, a cake in cookie form.

“They’re really moreish.

“I don’t have a traditional sweet palate. They are pretty sweet but they’re not excessively sweet.

“We use salt to tone it down.”

Simone has found a niche in the speciality coffee scene and wants to expand her reach further interstate.

“But we want to make sure that we stay a classic product,” she said.

“We’re not quite interested in being a food trend.”

Every Butterbing cookie is handmade, from the batter through to the flavours in the buttercream.

“It’s very much a labour of love,” Simone said.

“We make about eight different flavours a week.”

They’re born from discussions around the lunch table, food trends and partnerships with other companies.

“It’s quite hard for people to move away from caramel and chocolate,” she said.

New-borns missing out

By Casey Neill There are not enough maternal child health nurses to cope with a baby boom in Keysborough.

Parents are having scheduled visits delayed by months, causing concerns about monitoring their child’s development.

Richelle McClelland has an 18-month-old son and a daughter, four months.

“I found with my little boy, the nurse had been sick a few times - which isn’t their fault - but then they weren’t able to reschedule appointments for us until three months later,” she said.

“It’s concerning when you’re a new parent and you want to find out things.

“Even with him starting solids, you’re delayed because you don’t have a maternal child health nurse to talk to.

“You’re left to access other resources on your own.”

Ms McClelland is a nurse so she benefited from her own knowledge.

“But it’s nice to have that face-to-face contact,” she said.

“They can check milestones, and that their de-

velopment is on track.” She didn’t receive a home visit with her daughter until she was three weeks old.

“At that time I was having a bit of postnatal depression and didn’t really have that support to talk about and to know,” she said.

“I was fortunate enough I had her privately, so I was able to access the midwife at the hospital and they were my main support.”

Ms McClelland said the nurses were great but more were needed.

Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan raised the issue at the Monday 11 September council meeting.

He said he’d received reports that Springside Kindergarten was set up as a maternal and child health centre but had no nurse.

He said one resident suggested approaching nurses from hospitals who were interested in extra shifts.

Community services director Martin Fidler said maternal child health nurses had specific training so this was not an option.

Man arrested on theft charges Monash CIU detectives arrested a Noble Park North man over several alleged thefts on Wednesday 13 September.

They executed a search warrant as part of an investigation into the alleged theft of cabling and truck batteries.

Police seized cabling and tools and arrested a 32-year-old man, who was expected to appear at Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court charged with burglary, theft and theft from a motor vehicle.

Cr Kirwan questioned whether the area was difficult to recruit for.

“We haven’t actually got the easiest clients,” he said.

But Mr Fidler said the council’s team of about 35 nurses valued an “interesting and complex day-to-day experience”.

“When we’re recruiting, nurses say they like the challenge,” he said.

In Brief Driver flees after crash A driver ran off after crashing his car into a power pole in Springvale.

Police are appealing for help as they investigate the crash, which occurred about 1.45pm on Wednesday 13 September.

Police said a Toyota station wagon was travelling south along Springvale Road when the driver appeared to lose control of the car.

It ran off the road and crashed into a power pole near Boulton Avenue.

The man got out of the car and was last seen headed down Rosalie Street.

He was described as Asian in appearance and about 20 to 30 years old with a solid build and unshaven face.

At the time of the incident he was wearing a grey jumper and light pants.

Man missing from hospital A man who went missing from a Caulfield hospital could be in Dandenong.

Police are appealing for public help to find 64-year-old Kenneth Calder (pictured).

He was last seen at a hospital on Kooyong Road about 8am on Wednesday 13 September.

Police and family are concerned for his welfare due to a medical condition that requires regular medication.

Kenneth is described as 178 centimetres tall with long, grey hair and was last seen wearing a black and grey checked flannelette winter top, black pants and red runners.

Police believe Kenneth might be in the Dandenong area.

Investigators released an image of Kenneth in the hope someone recognises him and has information relating to his current whereabouts.

The new playground comes as the latest addition to Waverley Garden’s ambience upgrades which commenced in 2016.

With another smaller custom built playground installed last year and the centre’s parents’ rooms having recently completed their makeovers, Ms Murphy said the refurbishments will continue to keep families in the community at the forefront of Waverley Garden’s purpose.

“I think that having two custom built playgrounds is a major point of difference at Waverley Gardens and gives our community a meeting place for their families and friends to enjoy,” she said.

Waverley Gardens Shopping Centre has unveiled its highly anticipated new custom built children’s playground.

The new playground, which was revealed to the public on Saturday 16 September, has replaced the centre’s Magic Garden Playground, and caters for children of all age groups.

Days to remember With all due respect to Peter Jabbour, who I know is held in high esteem throughout the local community, Australia Day celebrates when Captain Arthur Phillip landed in Botany Bay on 26 January 1788 after Captain Cook had discovered Australia in 1770.

(November) are days we pay thanks to our forefathers and recent counterparts who have fought to allow Australia to be and remain a democratic country - “Lest We Forget”.

While many of us agree with the sentiment expressed in Peter Jabbour’s (OAM) letter, re not changing the date or reason while we celebrate Australia Day, I feel we have to remember the real reason we have all these public holidays and what we are celebrating on these specific days and not confusing what each day is for.

Do we need to include a Sorry Day or a Reconciliation Day into our nation’s calendar to appease our indigenous population, as they are the traditional owners of this land we so proudly call home Australia?

It may have been an oversight on your behalf, Peter, or even a typo, but it is important to correctly record what Australia Day stands for.

Space to decide on marriage I know there has been a lot of discussion on the forthcoming postal vote on the ‘marriage’ debate and many saying that as it has the support of the majority there should have been a vote in parliament.

I am glad the High Court gave the decision it did for I think a major change to the social structure of the country should be put to the overall population and not be deemed a ‘waste of money’ by those that oppose it.

I ask if the majority are in favour of altering the marriage act as those in the ‘yes’ camp say they are why, in that case, are they so afraid of the question being put to the general population?

I noticed on SBS mere hours after the High Court decision that they were reporting on the ‘yes’ campaign that had started but there was no report on any opposite view.

We are told that the debate will have equal space but so far SBS is putting their view rather forcefully behind the ‘yes’ campaign.

Brad Woodford: I saw a fire truck racing to an emergency in this area a few months back which had to do a three-point turn and turn back to find an alternate route, all because it couldn’t get through all the cars parked on the street.

Potentially crucial minutes lost, even the potential for injury or death.

And it beggars belief how many people these days have the big homes with a two or even three-car garage, but due to their garage being loaded to ceiling with other stuff all their cars are parked out on the street.

Sorry, but something has to give. I’m on the council’s side with this one.

Will Bronx: My parents live near the hospital and Cleeland/ Dandy High and everyone parks there because the hospital is too expensive. The schools don’t have parking and now every house block has three to four townhouses on it with five people living in each townhouse.

Matt Salmi: Sounds like sour milk to me... residents complain that people park there and council takes action and because it prevents them from parking they crack it.

Have a look at the residents complaining, two parents and two adult children - four cars.

I’ve just read your story about Canberra Avenue residents.

We have the same issues here in Edward Avenue, Dandenong.

We have requested that the council act here also but all they did was to paint white lines (bays) for parking but they don’t enforce the parking outside the bays, which is an offence.

The amount of times we have been prevented from getting in or out of our driveways due to them being partially blocked is a daily event and the council do nothing and we have been told by parking officers that it’s not a parking bay and therefore no ticket will be issued.

We have also so been abused by the hospital staff who park here 24-7 and if we call police nothing happens yet when the staff call the police, the police act and we get chewed out and told ‘bad luck you will have to wait for the driver to return before you can use your driveway’.

This is not good enough. The council painted the parking bays in and don’t book cars for being outside the bays?

They book residents who have overstayed on the street because they can’t access their own driveways.

I know I am one and am still trying to fight it and I have a disabled parking permit and that didn’t even stop him from booking me.

We say ‘bring back parking permits for residents’ and when this happens the blocking of driveways will stop, and ticket more cars for being out of the bays.

He said the Shonica Guy versus Crown Casino and Aristocrat trial started on Tuesday 12 September and would decide whether modern poker machines are deceptive and deliberately addictive.

Shonica Guy is a former problem gambler and is not seeking damages.

Cr Kirwan said Greater Dandenong had the worst losses per capita in the state, one of the highest concentrations of poker machines in the state and one of the worst overall losses.

REGIONAL SALES PICK UP SPEED REGIONAL Victoria’s property market is the strongest in seven years with homes selling in a median of just 49 days in August - the shortest period since February 2010 and 18 days faster than the same period last year.

The median number of days a home takes to sell in a particular town or region indicates the strength of the private sale market in that area, with declines signalling increased buyer interest.

year with homes spending a median of 89 days on market in August - 99 days less than the same period last year.

Kyabram in north west Victoria also saw increased buyer demand with homes selling 59 days faster this August, in a median of 82 days.

Homes also sold faster in Barwon Heads and Yarrawonga in a median of 45 and 87 days respectively, both down by 53 days on August 2016 figures.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY FUN Animals bring magic to kids’ festival A two-week celebration for the young and young at heart is kicking off in Greater Dandenong.

This year’s Greater Dandenong Children’s Festival has an animal kingdom theme and features free and low-cost events throughout the school holidays from 23 September to 8 October.

The event is now in its sixth year and will include daily movie screenings in Harmony Square in Dandenong, craft workshops, storytelling and puppet making.

The headline event, Little Day Out - For Big Imaginations, will be held at Ross Reserve on Sunday 1 October from 11am to 4pm.

Visitors will be able to ride a camel, visit an animal farm and try their hand at circus play.

Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti said the festival appealed to children of all ages and encouraged them to explore their creative side.

He said more than 17,000 people were expected to attend the festival during the two weeks.

This year’s festival will also feature the inaugural Shorter Cuts Film Festival.

Mona Beeza the bee is the creative one in the group and loves drawing, while Birdtoven the bird is an actor who loves to entertain.

Gardens of great fun There’s no need to go any further than Waverley Gardens Shopping Centre these school holidays.

From 25 to 28 September, kids are invited to head down to the centre for a Native Animal Show running three times a day at 11am, noon and 1pm.

The show is followed by the chance for children to interact with the animals and have the possibility to snap some holiday memories.

On 26 and 27 September, Waverley Gardens will be hosting a charity event for Very Special Kids (VSK), the Melbourne based children’s charity that helps more than 900 families across Victoria with children who have a life-threatening condition.

VSK provides ongoing support from diagnosis all the way through to recovery or bereavement.

Throughout the two days, children are invited to take part in ‘craft and create’ with all donations being given to the Very Special Kids charity.

In the week running from 2 to 6 October, the fun continues with kids invited to come along and meet Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as they demonstrate their signature moves in a live stage show.

The shows will take place at 11am and 1pm daily with a meet and greet session at noon where audience members can meet their favourite mean, green fighting machine.

TV on track for train tale

A Dandenong worker is among the stars of a new television series on railways.

Chris Barnett was in charge of testing the VLocity trains built at Bombardier Transportation’s Dandenong manufacturing facility.

He will appear in episode nine of Railroad Australia on the Discovery Channel on Thursday 21 September.

“As part of the commissioning process at the end of the build, V/Line sends a driver out to put it through its paces,” he told the Journal.

“There’s a section of track that we use for testing out past Pakenham, where there’s straight and level track.

“We know it will give reliable data.”

Mr Barnett said testing took place in off-peak times, between Tynong and Nar Nar Goon.

“Primarily we’re looking to make sure it will run as designed without any faults appearing,” he said.

There’s also a high-speed test to ensure the brakes are working.

He brings the train to a stop from 160 kilometres an hour.

“The train would need to pull up in about 800 metres,” he said.

“Very exact equip measures the stopping distances.

“They’re the most modern train so they’re quite, they’re comfortable, they’re smooth.

“They’ve got all the creature comforts of a modern vehicle.”

Mr Barnett’s dad worked on the Victorian railways in the 1960s.

“Growing up he gave myself and my brother a bit of an interest in the railways, I guess,” he said.

“I met a friend, socially, who was a trainee electric train driver.

“He pointed me in the right direction for ap-

He enjoys the variety of the job.

“You’re not sitting behind a desk doing a mundane job day-in, day-out,” he said.

He also likes the responsibility.

“We’ve got time constraint pressures,” he said.

“Every kid growing up wants to be train driver and I never grew out of it.”

He hopes Railroad Australia gives passengers an insight to the system.

“I hope they feel safe travelling on our network because they can see how much effort goes on behind the scenes,” he said.

Blueprint is a statement for sector’s future strategy

By Casey Neill There’s a new plan for the future of Victoria’s manufacturing sector.

The State Government unveiled the Advancing Victorian Manufacturing - A Blueprint for the Future strategy in Dandenong on Wednesday 13 September.

“Dandenong is a nation-leading manufacturing hub supporting thousands of local jobs,” Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said.

“We have to plan for the future of this industry, and that’s exactly what this statement is doing.”

Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan said $12 million in new funding and initiatives would back the blueprint.

It sets out four key actions: creating manufacturing jobs of the future; helping small to medium businesses grow, innovate and capture new market opportunities; strengthening the local supply chain; and finding export opportunities.

“Victoria is the home of manufacturing,” Mr Noonan said.

“This strategy is all about creating jobs of the future, growing businesses and taking Victorian innovation to the world.”

Last year, manufacturing experienced the fastest employment growth of any industry in Victoria with about 40,000 new jobs created.

The government’s Advanced Manufacturing Advisory Council, led by Ross Pilling, developed the strategy with input from businesses, industry associations, unions and research organisations.

“Manufacturing is one of Victoria’s great strengths,” Mr Pilling said.

“We have worked closely with industry to develop this strategy and ensure the sector is primed for future growth.”

The Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry applauded the strategy.

Melbourne Chamber of Commerce executive director Dianne Smith said advanced manufacturing touched all Victorians “from the food we eat to the trains and trams we travel on”.

“Doing all we can to make this sector as globally competitive as possible is vital if Victoria is to continue to be the home of cutting-edge innovation and new product design,” she said.

A manufacturing forum in Dandenong celebrated successful transitions from automotive to new sectors and looked to a bright future.

The Drum Theatre hosted the free, day-long Victoria’s Transforming Manufacturing Industry Forum: Opportunities and Challenges on Tuesday 12 September Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams told the forum’s opening session that in recent times, the focus in relation to manufacturing had been on challenges, especially with the closure of passenger vehicle manufacturing in Australia.

“But we need to be careful that we aren’t confusing or conflating the story of auto manufacturing with the story of manufacturing more generally,” she said.

“Because, especially here in the South-East, our manufacturing sector has been the author of many, many good stories.

“We produce world-class trains and trams, we are home to the most well-known and loved caravan manufacturer in the country.

“We also have businesses doing exciting work in the defence space, as well as world leading food manufacturers.”

Ms Williams said the region was “the beating heart of manufacturing in Victoria”.

“I hope the day leads to the valuable sharing of opportunities, of partnerships and ideas so that we can continue with the next chapter of positive stories, the next phase of world leading innovation and design, and jobs - lots of jobs!”

Business network SEBN and South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) hosted the afternoon session titled The Future is Now ... and Always Has Been.

SEMMA executive officer Adrian Boden explained that innovation and creativity had been an ever-constant factor in human development.

“The idea that we must innovate misses the fact that we have been doing just that for millennium,” he said.

“Can we do better? Absolutely. Are we as good as the best? Probably not.

“To compete, we need to measure ourselves against the best globally and go from there.

“And remember - today is yesterday’s future.”

Nitto Denko Australia managing director Michael Finn spoke about the business’ transition as a subsidiary of an international company.

The company’s headquarters had long identified its Australian arm as an auto industry company so its purpose was in doubt following the auto industry exit announcement.

Mr Finn and his team looked for an opportunity in Australia that would fit within the global organisation and identified agriculture, specifically livestock monitoring.

Restructure gets set to see eight-team grades

By Nick Creely After a stringent process by the Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA), a restructuring of the Turf, Synthetic and Junior Competitions has been mooted for the 2018/19 season.

Essentially, the association hopes to adopt eight-teams per grade model similar to that of neighbouring competition such as West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA) and the newly restructured Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association (MPCA) which, until last year, was a 12-side competition.

So what does this mean for clubs?

- In a normal 21-week season, each team would play the other seven sides in their grade twice, once in a two-day game and once in a oneday match.

- The reduction in teams per grade is considered a fairer and more balanced model and affords teams a greater opportunity to play in finals.

- To achieve the model, the bottom four sides at the conclusion of the 2017/2018 season will be removed from Turf 1 and placed with the top four teams in Turf 2 to form the Turf 2 grade. The bottom eight sides in Turf 2 would move into Turf 3 and so on until all turf grades had eight teams.

- If a shortfall in teams existed in the bottom turf grade, then consideration will be given to creating a composite turf grade by including the required number of synthetic sides.

- The Match Committee will have discretion to adjust teams throughout the grades as is seen necessary (e.g. new sides being entered).

- The advent of eight teams per grade will also flow through to the senior synthetic and junior grades. The only difference will be that clubs will

nominate their preferred grades as usual and the Match Committee will adjust as necessary, based on history.

- As the senior fixtures would contain more one-day games, the future of the designated Oneday Competition will also be reviewed.

One of many issues to surface and likely to be a major discussion - particularly from clubs - is the fact that for clubs competing in Turf 2-7 this season, they will essentially be playing without the possibility of promotion.

Another issue that has been raised is how it impacts on the short-term strategies of clubs, the development of younger players and the financial incentive of signing big name players to clubs not in the top-grade.

The first opportunity to discuss the proposed changes will be on 27 September, with the DDCA holding a coaches and captains meeting.

With the beginning of the cricket season just three weeks away, Endeavour Hills is wasting no time in preparing for a defining 2017/18 campaign. After a rather forgettable 2016/17 season, the Eagles under President Jay Stent have been plugging away in a hectic off-season down at Sydney Pargeter Reserve.

The club has appointed champion player Richard Saniga as its new head coach in a revamped coaching panel that also includes veterans Brad Baptist and Vaughan Baxter, as well as developing stars Wes Dunkley and Alistair Reed. Stent said the club is delighted with the appointment of Saniga as head coach and believes the coaching panel that has been put in place will support the club’s overall direction.

“We are re-defining our culture around the concepts of inclusion, shared responsibility, support for each other and fun,” he explained.

“We believe Richie is the perfect person to lead this development. He is a skilled and highly competitive cricketer who is respected by all for his achievements.

The club has also announced the signings of Nilo Perera, Kumbu Jayasundera and Harry Johnson.

“Nilo and Kumbu have re-signed after successful seasons last year when Nilo was Club Champion and Kumbu leading wicket taker,” Stent said.

“Harry is a young batsmen/ wicketkeeper who will join us from the UK. Despite being injured for part of the recent English season, Harry has shown some impressive form for Warwickshire 2nd XI and U/19 team and is looking forward to joining us for the season.”

The club is also expecting to be in a position to announce more new signings in the coming days and weeks.

With the club well and truly in the midst of pre-season training, Stent said he is excited by the eagerness around the place.

“Richie has already had a positive effect.

His enthusiasm is infectious and his emphasis on support and enjoyment is exactly what we want the club to build,” he said.

“I am really impressed by the number of young players who are attending.

“They are our major focus - we want to provide an environment where they can improve and be challenged, and where they enjoy playing their cricket.”

The club is also hoping that their new facilities are ready after the Christmas break.

“We have been fortunate to have been given funding for an electronic scoreboard which should be installed shortly after the new year,” Stent said.

“We are also hoping that our re-located second turf wicket will be ready in the second half of the year.”

An Eagles comeback for the ages

By Nick Creely JOURNAL FOOTBALL REVIEW SOUTHERN - DIVISION 3 GRAND FINAL Only a champion team can lift itself off the canvas when the game looks buried and find the will to win.

That’s exactly what the Doveton Eagles did on Saturday in what was a gripping grand final clash with Endeavour Hills at Jack Barker Oval in Cheltenham.

In a game of spits and spurts of momentum for each side, the Eagles found the winner late with a clutch set-shot from the 50-metre arc by Russell Robertson, 13.6(84) to 13.10(88).

It took just 30 seconds for the scoring to begin on Saturday, with Nick Gay running into an open goal to give the Falcons the dream start.

The Falcons - in their first senior grand final ever - settled into the contest quicker, and with the likes of Daniel Batson and Byron Hoe playing big roles in the first, managed to hold a slender nine-point quarter time lead.

A rev up by Eagles coach Simon Caldwell provided the catalyst for a quick response, with the underdogs producing a sensational second quarter, kicking six of the next seven goals to all of a sudden race out to a 22-point half time lead.

Eventual best-afield Michael Callinan was causing plenty of headaches through the midfield, often bursting out of a stoppage unopposed to give forwards Russell Robertson and Adam Read silver service.

A move to the midfield by Batson - and a tougher, more competitive showing in the middle - saw the Falcons immediately regain the momentum after the major break.

After three brain fades that resulted in 50 metre penalties, the Falcons made the Eagles pay for ill-discipline, with goals to Joel Marie, Chris Webber and the brilliant Batson pegging the margin back to five-points.

Only moments after Batson sunk his set-shot, Marie - who was helping turn the game on its

An outstanding bit of play by Jarrod O’Neill saw the margin cut back to a gettable 14-points only nine-minutes into play, before Robertson eventually stole victory with only two minutes left with a clutch shot that sent the crowd into raptures.

Even though Robertson was well held for the most part by Falcons defender Ben Moriaty in an absorbing one-on-one battle, the ex-AFL man’s class shone through.

Meanwhile, in Division 2 action, Keysborough was knocked out of the premiership race after a surprising 20-point preliminary final loss to Murrumbeena on Saturday at Meade Reserve, 3.11(29) to 5.19(49).

Robertson rams home a precious premiership sealer

By Nick Creely Make no mistake about it, the Doveton Eagles entered the 2017 Division 3 finals series as the underdogs.

And when they faced a hefty 28-point deficit on Saturday, early in the last quarter against a redhot Endeavour Hills, the premiership looked like it was making its way down to Barry Simon Reserve for the very first time.

But as Doveton Eagles coach Simon Caldwell explained, the belief that saw them win four out of four finals kicked in, with a desperate scramble resulting in a match-winning goal by the sharpshooting former Melbourne forward Russell Robertson.

“I was nervous - I genuinely thought we were done, and being 28-points down, I thought it was all over,” Caldwell said post-match about the last quarter revival.

“I’m just shell-shocked we won it, unbelievable but very nerve-racking - I’m just so proud of the boys’ efforts to keep going with it.

“We had the finals experience, a few blokes are still here from the 2013 flag, and we have a few older heads playing at a higher level - we still had the belief the whole way through that if we get on a roll, there’s no reason we can’t take it out.”

Rather than panic when faced with a deficit after a dominant third quarter by the Falcons, Caldwell kept things simple.

“At three quarter time, we sort of just put what I thought was our best midfield in there, and we put some fresh blokes in there to give them a run, and we just stuck fat,” he said.

“Our midfield is our strength, we have some bigger bodies in there, and sometimes it can hurt us on the outside and we know that.

“The coaches were throwing things around, saying let’s do this and that, but we ended up leaving it and got on a roll.”

Caldwell was full of praise for his players, in particular Robertson, who shook off a tough day to kick the goal that got them in front with just minutes to play.

“Robbo’s had a few down games this year - in

one match he kicked 6.13, but when he got the opportunity he just took it - that’s why he played at the highest level,” Caldwell explained.

“When the game needed to be won, he just slotted it from 50 out, and it got us over the line I guess. I’m super proud - it was nothing us coaches did, it was all on the boys on the field, they fought it out and kept rolling.“ With the Eagles finishing in fourth spot at the end of the home-and-away season - only one game from sixth and missing out all together they had to do it the hard way.

After defeating Black Rock in an elimination final, the Eagles defeated Ashwood in a semi final, before overcoming Hallam in a preliminary final performance.

“The biggest thing for me is that no one expected us to win - internally, we spoke about being the best team for the four weeks because we hadn’t been all year - and we did that,” Caldwell said.

Bewildering race form continues Bewildering enhanced his reputation as Australia’s fastest greyhound with a stunning victory in the Speed Star match race series at Sandown Park on Sunday 10 September.

Well supported in both overall and head-tohead markets, Bewildering poured on the speed to run away from Group 1 winner Black Mumbo in the home straight and stop the clock in 29.030 seconds.

It was the fifth fastest time ever recorded at Sandown Park, the second fastest time ever recorded in a Speed Star behind Smart Missile’s 29.006, and the fastest since Unlawful Entry’s 28.951 track record in March 2016.

It was also Bewildering’s second victory in the format following his victory in the Bill Collins Speed Star in May in which he ran 29.119.

“We thought that was about what he could run and he delivered which was good,” said kennel representative Jason Thompson, deputizing for his wife Seona.

“It shows how fast the dog is. It’s one thing to do it once or twice but to maintain that speed and improve on what he did earlier in the year. It’s unbelievable how fast he is.

“The only worry I had was if he had drawn on the inside because he likes being right in the centre of the track. The format suits him and the draw suited him.”

Later in the evening, star stayer Burn One Down made it a feature double for Thompson when claiming the Stayers Challenge when running 41.695.

Typically tardy out of the boxes, Burn One Down surprised everyone when he pinged the lids and record the fastest first split.

“We were a bit slack on him training wise,” Thompson conceded after the run.

“He’d done a bit of travelling so we backed off on him a bit and might have had him a bit too

“But he got the job done. He went 30.34 off the back so it would have been interesting to see what he could have run in a 600m race. He’s been ultra-consistent through his career which is a credit to the dog.”
