By Luke Voogt Fears of flammable cladding in Simonds Stadium’s eastern stand have led the ground’s trust to launch an investigation this week.

The Indy recently received a tip off from an industry source that the stand contained flammable cladding, which could put crowds at risk in the 6000-capacity stand.

But the company that built the stand during 2003 and 2005, Kane Constructions, refused to comment on the matter despite multiple Indy inquiries.

A spokesperson declined to reveal if the company had any knowledge of composite aluminium cladding or panels with a polyethylene (PE) core in the eastern stand.

“We will not be making a comment on this,” they told the Indy.

“This conversation is over.”

Authorities and the Kardinia Park Stadium Trust, which owns the ground, this week declined to rule out that the stand contained flammable cladding.

But a trust spokesperson confirmed the organisation was conducting an investigation into the stand.

The tip off came after the ABC recently revealed that Australian

This occurred more than a decade before similar cladding caused the deadly Grenfell tower fire in London which killed 80 people this year.

Planning and fire experts recently told the ABC that there may be more than 5000 buildings in Victoria containing similar cladding.

Fire engineer Tony Enright said ambiguous standards and poor enforcement had often led to a conflicts of interest between safety and economy.

MP pumps State to open up onshore gas reserves Geelong MP Simon Ramsay has defied his own party’s position on onshore gas reserves amid concern over rising power prices.

Mr Ramsay this week urged the Victorian Government to overturn its onshore gas moratorium and unlock onshore gas reserves to secure the state’s supply.

“I’m not for fracking, but I am supportive of conventional gas extraction,” the Western Victoria MP said.

“Dan Andrews needs to be sensible. I’m asking his energy minister to enable the state’s onshore gas reserves to be tapped where it is safe to do so.”

Mr Ramsay described Victoria’s renewable energy target of 40 per cent as unrealistic and called on the government to slow the shutdown of coal power plants.

He estimated it would take at least $3 billion to build the number of turbines needed to cover the

loss of the recently shut Hazelwood power plant.

“Victoria must have a sensible energy mix of coal, gas and renewables as part of a national model,” he said.

“Rushing to a random renewable energy target is reckless without guaranteed supply. We must have a contemporary, sensible response that keeps the lights on and Victoria in business.”

But Mr Ramsay’s position goes against that of the Liberal Party, which supports extending the moratorium until 2020.

In 2015 opposition leader Matthew Guy declared his support for an Auditor General Report which stated that Victoria was not well-placed to lift the moratorium.

“The findings of the Auditor-General support our view that the case for an expansion of the commercial unconventional gas industry in Victoria has not been made,” he said.

Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio ridiculed Mr Ramsay for “embarrass(ing) himself with another ill-informed rant”.

“Opposition Leader Matthew Guy has publicly confirmed that he would not overturn the moratorium if elected to government - it has bipartisan support,” she said. “(Mr Ramsay) doesn’t even know what his party’s position is and his estimates are flat out wrong.

“He also seems to believe that the only source of renewable energy is wind power.”

The independent national market operator had endorsed the renewable energy target, Ms D’Ambrosio said.

She said the renewables push would create up to 11,000 jobs and attract billions of dollars in new investment.

The trust was investigating the stand with City Hall “who were (at the time) responsible for the stadium” and engineers that worked on the eastern stand, its spokesperson said.

The investigation would “determine whether or not aluminium-composite cladding or panels with a PE core were used in its construction,” they added.

A City Hall spokesperson referred the Indy to the Victorian Builders Association (VBA) for information on Simonds Stadium.

A VBA spokesperson said the authority had prioritised inspecting high-rise residential buildings in Melbourne due to safety concerns.

“To date, the VBA has not audited the use of cladding on Simonds Stadium or any other building in Geelong,” the spokesperson said.

“The VBA is currently working with the City of Port Phillip to audit another 63 buildings in that municipality.”

The trust recently participated in a state survey addressing combustible and non-combustible building materials across all government facilities built within the last 20 years, its spokesperson said.

“The Trust can confirm that all stands within the venue have been built in accordance with appropriate buildings code and Australian standards at the time of build.”

Opposition blast for future loans

Award to recognise volunteers’ energy Viva Energy has selected 20 selfless sporting volunteers for the finals of its Club Legend Award, from almost 150 entries into the inaugural competition.

The list includes long-time members, inspirational juniors and volunteers who saved their clubs from the brink of disaster, who will each receive $1000 for themselves and their club.

Competition organiser Krystin Dudley was thrilled with the range of men and women who entered.

“We were so lucky to get such a huge diversity of sports, ages and contributions,” she said.

Viva Energy will host a Club Legend Awards Dinner to honour the finalists at Simonds Sta-

dium on 16 October.

A panel of Geelong icons will choose the Club Legend but residents can pick their favourite in the People’s Choice award, with a $2000 prize for the winner and their club.

The Club Legend Award winner and their club will receive $5000, while the runner-up and their club will receive $2000 each.

Geelong’s administrators have burdened the city’s future council by deferring almost $36 million in loans, according to the state opposition.

Shadow local government minister David Davis slammed the administrators after revelations last week that they had deferred the loans in their latest budget.

“The administrators’ deferral of $36 million in loans to future councils is kicking the can down the track to future ratepayers,” he said.

In 2016 then-Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins accused Geelong’s councillors of “financial mismanagement” when she sacked them and appointed administrators.

“The Geelong administrators’ performance has been patchy, despite Labor and Daniel Andrews claiming a reason to sack the council was poor financial performance,” Mr Davis said.

“Despite all Natalie Hutchins’ interference, debt has increased.”

Mr Davis blasted Ms Hutchins decision to appoint ‘monitors’ Peter Dorling and Jude Munro to watch over the next council, at a cost to Geelong ratepayers.

“The government’s decision to appoint monitors at a further cost of $480,000 reflects a minister and government addicted to interfering with a democratically elected level of government.”

Administrator chair Kathy Alexander last week praised the City’s financial management despite the administrators’ final budget projecting a loan balance of $125 million in 2020/2021.

“It’s pleasing to see that our total loan balance - or our debt - has dropped by $9.3 million over the past

year to an even more manageable $45.5 million.”

The administrators deferred almost $36m in loans during the last financial year.

The 2016/17 Budget forecast $109m in loan debt in June 2020, compared to $119m forecast in the latest budget.

Dr Alexander last year stated her intent to tackle debt after the 2016/17 Budget set out an additional $50m in new loans, on top $55m in existing debt.

The budget forecast a total debt of $93m by June 2017.

“I think we’ve got to look at a budgeting process year-on-year Davis blasts loans deferral. that actually looks to pay down those debts really quickly,” she said at the time.

Ms Hutchins, who this week relinquished the Local Government portfolio for another ministerial post, defended the administrators’ financial performance.

“The administrators have played an important role in getting Geelong Council back on track,” she said.

“I’m confident that as the administration period ends, council will be in a far stronger place to deliver for its community than it was at the start of this process.”

Ms Hutchins said the problems identified at Geelong Council, including financial mismanagement, were deep rooted and would take years to fully rectify.

Double Take Has Darryn Lyons revealed the most unlikely council ticket in Geelong’s history?

It’s certainly something for declared council candidates to consider after he posted on social media a picture of himself with fellow former mayor of Geelong John Mitchell and the hashtag #thedreamteam.

Dazza’s former Liberal membership and Mitch’s alignment with Labor make the pairing unlikely enough but the idea entered the twilight zone with another accompanying hashtag - #andyrichardsphotography.

That could only be former councillor Andy Richards, another Labor man and one who publicly butted heads with Lyons all the way until their council’s sacking in 2016.

And speaking of the monitors, they seemed to have exposed new thinking in local socialist ranks.

Socialist Alliance candidate for council Sue Bull, a school teacher, was surprisingly among the first to slam the additional level of state control.

“It is ridiculous to have state-appointed monitors,” railed Sue, who went on to suggest the appointment was a waste of ratepayers’ money.

Forget boardrooms and pay packets - a Surf Coast arts event has established possibly the smallest front yet in the battle for ‘gender equality’.

Lorne Sculpture Biennale took up the cudgels this

week when it trumpeted an initiative “aimed at supporting female sculptors”.

“Many women sculptors struggle with equitable access to capital in what is a very expensive field of practice and we would like to help even out the playing field,” explained biennale curator Lara Nicholls.

As such, the event had launched a bid for cash on an Australia Council Cultural Fund website to help women knock up their 2018 entries, Ms Nicholls said.

“The initiative will focus the public’s attention on the achievements female sculptors make and help achieve gender parity in the 2018 Biennale.”

Given the event once featured a sculptor on all fours digging sand on the beach like a dog, gender parity should be its greatest achievement yet!

Milestone birthday help for aunt

By Luke Voogt Jade Daly will spend her 18th birthday hosting Leukaemia Foundation’s biggest night in Geelong to honour her aunt.

“I find supporting the work the foundation does for families like mine more rewarding than a night out,” the Drysdale teen told the Indy.

Doctors diagnosed her aunt Allison Daly with myelofibrosis, a rare form of blood cancer, last year.

Allison recently underwent a bone marrow transplant and began chemotherapy two weeks ago.

Jade said her aunt was devastated that she would miss her five-year-old daughter’s first school concert in a couple weeks’ time.

“She’s really strong. But it’s hard for her because she wants to be active and do all the things that she can for her daughter.

“It’s sad for me to hear my five-year-old cousin saying ‘I don’t want to leave mama’ and get upset, so services such as accommodation near the hos-

pital are really a great support for us.”

Jade, who studies event management at Gordon TAFE, volunteered to run this year’s Geelong Light the Night.

She said that the Leukaemia Foundation provided “amazing” services for those battling the disease and their families.

“It gives me more determination to make this event more successful.”

The event is not the first time Jade put birthday plans on hold for a good cause: she made an appointment to give blood on her 16th.

A busy schedule of volunteering meant a big night out would have to wait, she said.

“I’m volunteering at the (Surf Coast Light the Night) the next day so I don’t have time.”

Geelong’s Light the Night will take place at Steampacket Gardens on 22 September.

State Government “inaction” has led to another police car ramming in Geelong this week, according to the Opposition.

Shadow Police Minister Ed O’Donohue slammed the government for last month voting down Opposition legislation to introduce a twoyear mandatory minimum sentence for ramming a police car.

“While Daniel Andrews dithers, the men and women of Victoria Police continue to be attacked and put at risk,” he said. “How many more police need to be attacked and injured before Daniel Andrews does something?”

Earlier this year Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt said offenders who threatened or assaulted police officers should “have plenty of time to reflect on it from a police cell.”

But Police Minister Lisa Neville said the opposition’s legislation for the new offence was poorly drafted.

“Their legislation only covered police vehicles, not police officers themselves or other emergency service workers.”

Ms Neville said the government would introduce more comprehensive legislation to crack down on offenders who harmed police officers or emergency service workers.

The government was working with the Police Association and Victoria Police to get the reforms right, she said.

“We ... expect legislation to be introduced into parliament shortly.”

An alleged police car ramming Monday was the latest of several incidents of its kind in Geelong this year.

BLAME GAME: Ed O’Donohue has laid the latest police car ramming in Geelong at the feet of the government. attempting to steal tyres from a Holden ute at the North Geelong train station about 5.30am, police alleged.

When officers arrived at the scene the three men allegedly jumped into a white Toyota Lexcen and the alleged 20-year-old driver reversed into a police van before driving off.

Police initiated a short pursuit but quickly terminated it. Shortly afterwards, police received reports of a collision between a garbage truck and the same car on Elizabeth Street, Geelong West.

The occupants of the car allegedly fled on foot before police arrived and recovered the car. Police arrested two men aged 18 and 20, and a boy aged 17 in the vicinity of a car factory on North Shore Road, near Corio Quay Road, about 7am.

The 20-year-old spent time in hospital for minor injuries before facing court, and did not apply for bail Wednesday.

The 17-year-old was granted bail on the condition he report to police three times a week, adhere to random drug screenings and curfew, and not associate with the co-accused.

Shock as Amber takes the crown

By Luke Voogt Lara’s Amber Dew became Miss International Australia on Saturday, after winning the national finals of the world’s fourth largest pageant.

“It was unbelievable,” the thrilled 21year-old said. “I didn’t know that I was going to win!”

The marketing student will represent her country at the Miss International pageant against more than 80 women from across the world in Japan this November.

Amber first spoke to the Indy in April 2016 after she made the Australian finals of the Miss Galaxy pageant.

A photo on social media sent her on a whirlwind pageant adventure in 2015, after a modelling agency executive saw her tagged.

The then-teenager set off to Taiwan to represent Australia in Miss Charity Queen.

“After that experience I fell in love with pageants and became a freelance model and now often judge pageants,” she said.

Amber spent 10 months attending Geelong community events and fund-raising to prepare for the Miss International Australia finals.

“I did literally every event I could I think of,” she said.

She has raised hundreds of dollars for ovarian cancer foundation Teal Wings of hope, the pageant’s chosen foundation, and met with people battling the disease.

“It makes me appreciate what I have and motivates me to be able to help them further,” she said.

Amber now has her sights set on her first international win.

“The pageants are much bigger internation-

ally in Australia overseas - you’re basically a celebrity,” she said. “There are paparazzi everywhere.”

She said pageants gave young women a chance to help others in Australia and abroad.

“It is slowly growing in Australia but there is a bit of stigma about it,” she said. “But girls who are in pageants are actually very inspirational.

“I love meeting new people with common interests. And we’re raising a lot of money for charity.”

Her marketing degree, modelling career and pageant success go hand in hand, she said.

“It has helped me learn how to present myself and how to raise awareness.

“I’m using it to my advantage now but in the future I want to work for a big advertising agency and become a director there.”

She credited Melbourne-based transsexual Filipina pageant trainer, Gabriella Martinez, for her recent success.

“She’s taught me everything I know,” she said.

“She’s always said ‘You’re going to get somewhere and you’re going to win something, just keep going’.”

Amber planned a workshop to help aspiring local models develop their catwalk credentials and raise more money.

She hoped local businesses would support her next quest for glory in Japan, and encouraged other women to give pageants a go.

“You never know what’s going to happen,” she said.

Amber travelled to Sydney for the finals with fellow Lethbridge contestant Abi Grigsby, who narrowly missed out on the title herself.

“She actually won an award all the girls voted for called Miss Friendship,” Amber said.

Call to name guide pups

Second life given to NBN wifi tower

Two Geelong shops are charging up a fund-raiser seeking names for guide dog puppies.

Newtown and Waurn Ponds’ Battery World stores are seeking entries for Guide Dogs Australia’s national Name the Puppy Competition.

The stores’ franchisee, Roger Langham, said customers could put their suggested dog name on a label in-store for a $2 “donation” to Guide Dogs Australia.

“And here’s a tip: according to dog naming manuals, anything with two syllables is best,” Mr Langham said.

“At the end of the day, whether you pick Rover or Ruby it’s a terrific opportunity to get behind a great cause. You never know - your favourite name might get picked.”

Guide dog user Glen Bracegirdle was unsurprised to learn that his dog’s name, Bronny, meant blessed, since he felt the same every day from the pair’s bond of friendship and caring.

Mr Bracegirdle credited Bronny with saving his life countless times while also helping him live with greater independence.

“She’s my best friend - I trust her more than I trust most people,” he said.

“She’s my eyes and often my ears especially with electric cars that are a nightmare for blind people. Not only can we not see them but we also can’t hear them, but thankfully Bronny does.

“Bronny is such a great name and suits her nature, too. She can take me through an airport, even to the cheese section in the supermarket.

“I walk to work every day with her, and it takes me 15 minutes. If I had to use a cane it would take me 45 minutes or I would have to rely on someone else to drive me.”

Mr Bracegirdle praised the role of guide dogs in the lives of the people who depend on them.

“They really do change lives,“ he said.

The competition closes on 21 October.

The Surf Coast Shire has back-flipped on a decision to block a proposed wireless NBN tower in Bellbrae, granting a permit on Tuesday night.

The shire originally voted four to three against granting a planning permit for the facility at 1435 Anglesea Road at its 22 August meeting.

Councillors Libby Coker, David Bell, Carol McGregor and Martin Duke opposed the facility, with Councillor Heather Wellington abstaining.

But the shire reversed the decision after receiving information from the NBN the proposed tower would be part of a network servicing 1700 additional properties.

“In approving the application lodged by NBN Co to build a tower at Bellbrae, council is aware that this will not service all locals,” Cr McGregor said. The shire would advocate the NBN to provide reliable, affordable alternative service for residents who could not access the service through telecommunications towers, she said.

Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson hailed the decision a “terrific win“ for 4000 residents across Bellbrae, Gherang, Moriac, Mt Duneed and North Torquay.

“I am delighted that commonsense has prevailed,” she said.

“The decision on 22 August by some councillors ... to block this fixed wireless facility was a terrible blow to the community.”

Ms Henderson said the Bellbrae fixed wireless site would serve as a “connection gateway” to other facilities in the area.

“If council had continued to prevent NBN Co from constructing this facility, NBN fixed wireless could have been delayed by up to 18-24 months.”

The residents could now expect to receive fixed wireless NBN broadband in the second half of 2018, Ms Henderson said.

A group of Bellbrae residents known as the Committee for Equitable Telecommunications Access in Bellbrae opposed an alternate fixed wireless location.

The alternate site would have reached 344 premises in Bellbrae, around 100 homes less than NBN Co’s solution, Ms Henderson said.

Letters Trust us with Kardinia Park Kardinia Park Stadium Trust takes its role in driving economic, community and livability benefits for the Geelong region seriously.

For many years the stadium has been best known as the home of Geelong Football Club and, while the Cats remain our lead tenant, the trust has now been charged with driving a much broader remit of events and opportunities.

The trust is relatively young, having taken over the responsibility for the stadium management in 2016.

It is now in a process of planning and consolidation and has recently announced the formation of an advisory committee of sport, community and council representatives to assist in developing a master plan for the precinct. The announcement of the committee was unrelated to GFL finals negotiations.

The stadium’s stage four redevelopment has delivered the 6500-seat Brownlow Stand and the Sunrise Centre, to provide community rehabilitation services. Work on the final stage at the stadium’s northern end has commenced with planning and design.

Next month the stadium will host an AFL Masters Carnival and in January a Big Bash League cricket double-header and a Melbourne Victory A-League match. A range of other exciting new events will be announced in due course.

While some may question the speed of our evolution (Letters, 8 September), the trust’s focus is getting the future of Kardinia Park right.

The trust has a mandate to deliver genuine, cost-effective solutions to benefit our community and I am confident it can do so.

Sometimes we realise we have been looking at events from only one perspective, which is what’s happening with Australia Day. The more history uncovers the facts of how severely and unfairly the first Australians suffered, and continue to do so, under colonialism, the more people feel uncomfortable and unable to celebrate such an event.

Australia Day should be a day that all Australians can celebrate. It should be inclusive and respectful, most especially to the people who have lived all over this vast continent for 65,000 years.

Lefty bigots hate contrarians Regarding the same-sex marriage rally in central Geelong on Saturday, I took issue with the front page headline of a nonsensical rag distributed on the day.

The headline said: ‘Push The Bigots Back’.

But to which bigots did it refer?

I do not know anyone anti-gay but I do know plenty of people opposed to same-sex marriage and they have a right to their opinion.

It seems that anyone contrary to the leftist agenda is labelled a bigot just for expressing their opinion.

Furthermore, I seriously doubt that a seething mass of anti-gays exists in Australia. Most Australians seem comfortable with gays in the community, happily co-exist with them and, like me, have gay friends.

This bigotry aspect is just another shameful leftist beat-up and the rag’s publishers should be ashamed of themselves for attempting to be so divisive.

Such grossness has no place in a welcoming culture such as Australia’s.

MP must follow majority Now that we will not have the promised plebiscite on same-sex marriage, I demand that Liberal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson carry out a credible, professional survey within her electorate to determine where voters stand on the issue.

The poll ideally should be funded out of her own parliamentary allowances rather than by her party.

Her vote on the matter in parliament should reflect the publicly released outcome of the poll or survey.

If it does not she should be given the boot at the next federal election because she will have failed the most basic test: reflecting the majority views of her electorate.

The majority elected the former journalist to her $200,000- plus-a-year sinecure in parliament for four long years.

Slippery slope to polygamy The recent vote in Ireland by a minority of the population to alter the definition of marriage might have encouraged a trend to more unexpected developments.

In June the Irish Supreme Court recognised the polygamous marriage of a refugee from Lebanon, now an Irish citizen. It was the first polygamous marriage under Lebanese and Sharia law to be fully recognised in Ireland.

The redefinition of marriage will have consequences in Australia.

Sharia law permits a man to have four wives and already some weddings under Sharia law are deemed impermissible here. Will this continue as our traditional patterns of family life are questioned?

Our laws are based on the understanding that the natural and, for us, the Biblical definition of marriage is that a man and woman united in love will bring new life into the world and nurture their offspring to maturity.

This belief should not be sacrificed under the demands of a vocal minority supported by the majority of our politically correct media.

Butt out of council affairs Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins should butt out of Geelong council issues.

She sacked the councilors for nothing wrong except that they were Liberal. She has not sacked bullies working at council.

It’s a joke that she has appointed monitors to keep an eye on the new council. I can only assume they will pay lip service to the Andrews Government, so what’s the point of having a council?

The monitors will be paid $1200 a day. Does Ms Hutchins live in the real world?

Geelong’s council issue is only one of many caused by Andrews Government mismanagement.

The quantum of the bill was unbelievably annoying enough but I would like to know the identity of the council rocket scientist who designed the form.

My understanding was that all paperwork should be a standard size.

More importantly for Lara residents, where is the value for the rates they pay?

Council’s agenda is clearly central Geelongcentric, yet their planning processes are driving people out.

Council should get back to the three Rs of roads, rubbish and rates and abandon all feelgood jobs promoted in the council environment.

Crude humour the Frenchy way

By Luke Voogt Australian comedian and YouTube sensation Benjamin ‘Frenchy’ French is keen for rowdy gig as he comes to Geelong for the first time next Thursday.

“I’m very excited to visit, mostly just to try out the Tinder there - I’ve run out of people to swipe in Sydney,” he said.

“From the few people I’ve met from Geelong, I get the feeling it’s gonna be a pretty loose show, which should suit me to a T.” The 30-year-old grew up in Wollongong or ‘The Gong’ amidst the self-depreciating humour of his mates.

“The minute a friend looks like he’s getting a bit too arrogant for his own good, he’s quickly ripped on and brought back down to earth,” he said.

Frenchy “was hating life” substitute teaching at local high schools when he started making short films in 2012.

“A lot of the kids were such p***ks, it took all my restraint not to trip some of them down the stairs, which is very specific I know,” he said.

“One (film) called Jamal is actually the reason I lost my teaching licence. Another was an application video to host the kids channel ABC3.

Needless to say, I didn’t get the job.”

Five years later, he had notched up nearly 300,000 subscribers on Youtube, with millions watching his videos.

“It’s pretty epic, but I spend so much time on Tinder, I often don’t have time to reflect on subscriber numbers,” he said.

“I’m just a lanky Aussie bloke trying to make

my mates and fans laugh with my rogue stories and jokes.”

Frenchy channelled musical influences like Lonely Island, the Vengaboys and Lil Dicky to create his favourite clip, musical video Friendzone, with mate Matt Zach Gervaise.

Two days after uploading the song it hit 26 on the Australia iTunes charts between artists like Justin Bieber and Coldplay.

“We put it up because we thought it’d be funny if it got on the charts,” he said.

“We spent the whole week thinking ‘is this real life? It was so nice being about to afford Guacamole for that week.”

Like his videos, Frenchy’s rude and crude onstage humour dives into tinder banter, Aussie drinking culture, arrogant footballers and all the other good stuff ”.

“But it’s never far enough for my fans,” he said.

“I do some normal jokes too, obviously. I’m not an animal.”

He “bombed hard” his first onstage appearance, but luckily “only my best mate Scotty was around to see”.

“It was horrendous,” he said. “I could not have gotten less laughs, apparently midget Olympics isn’t good material for live shows.”

Frenchy’s church-going parents don’t swear, smoke or drink, and they hate his comedy, he said.

“Somehow their third-born has the filthiest mouth possible. They’re taking me out of the will for sure.”

Iconic Australian singer Tina Arena will come to Geelong for a one-off concert on Sunday night, before diving into the role of Evita next year.

The show is part of Arena’s Innocence to Understanding tour looking back at her 40-year career, from Young Talent Time to now.

“These shows will be my last concerts for quite some time, so come along and have some fun,” she said.

“We are five shows in and just finished the Queensland leg of the tour. The audiences seem to be having a great time, and I certainly am!”

The 49-year-old earned seven ARIA awards, two World Music Awards and even a French knighthood during her storied career.

She was grateful to have sung with her idols Donna Summer and Stevie Wonder and performed at the AFL Grand Final and the Sydney Olympics. “(Those performances were) epic, aside from the 80 or 100 thousand people there, you know it’s going out to the world,” she said.

Arena grew up in an Italian family in Melbourne, and first performed as five-year-old at her cousin’s wedding.

Her singing teacher recommended her to Young Talent Time and ‘Tiny Tina’ soon became a show regular.

“It was all I knew. I loved singing and entertaining, so it was a great childhood,” she said. “(There was) lots of hard work and lots of sacrifices, but it was the best apprenticeship an entertainer could ever hope for.

The tour’s title Innocence to Understanding is a lyric from Sorrento Moon, one of Arena’s best known hits.

“I thought it was a more interesting title than 40 Years of Greatest Hits,“ she said.

“It has been a journey for me from a nine-year-

Love story with a feel-good twist

By Justin Flynn It’s described as a feel-good love story.

You Am I frontman Tim Rogers’ iconic album What Rhymes with Cars and Girls is brought to life in a stunning musical adaptation coming to Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC).

Director Clare Watson teams up with Rogers and playwright Aidan Fennessy to deliver this love story with a twist.

“It’s such a nice show; it’s so warm hearted,” Watson said.

“It sounds cheesy, but it’s so full of love.”

The show is performed with Rogers himself leading a three-piece band to deliver every song from the popular album. Fennessy wrote the script.

The story revolves around Tash (Sophie Ross) and Johnno (Johnny Carr), two lovers brought together by fate - and a pizza delivery gone wrong.

It’s a vernacular story wound around Tim Rogers’ lyrics, an urban entanglement of a couple trying to work out love, passion and problems.

This story of two people who come from different worlds is a romance to soften the hardest of hearts and a reassurance for anyone who has ever been in love.

“The thing I kept getting told is all the people who watch it, can’t believe that they’re (Ross and Carr) not a real life couple,” Watson said.

“It feels like an authentic relationship in front of you.”

Audiences first fell in love with this urban romance when it premiered as part of the 2015 MTC season.

“It’s about making it fresh and new,” Watson says.

“One of the initial challenges was how do we make a musical seem less like a musical.”

Watson said it was an honour to work with Rogers.

“It’s been a sublime experience,” she said.

“He’s also such a generous collaborator. He understands what a theatre process takes, and he’s got a very wry sense of humour.”

Indeed, Fennessy is also a big fan.

“Aidan Fennessy, who wrote the script, it’s one of his all-time favourite albums and listens to it on repeat,” Watson says.

“We don’t spend any time anymore sitting down and concentrating on an entire album.

There’s an entire album’s worth of music in this.”

Cromer Builders starred in their debut at the prestigious Home Industry Association housing awards recently, winning two renovation honours for western Victoria.

Construction manager Adam Cromer says the awards were great recognition for his dad Ray, who started the business 35 years ago.

“He’s been doing it for a long time,” he says.

“It’s good to be acknowledged for his hard work and reputation.”

The builders won Renovation/Addition up to $400,000 and Renovation/Addition of the Year for their innovative facade facelift and rear extension of a beachside house in Barwon Heads designed by local architects, Freehand Projects.

The renovation focused on warmth, space, views to the property’s garden and the client’s taste for a modern aesthetic.

“It was a technical renovation and really well designed,” Adam says.

The clean architectural lines and absence of arcs and skirts called for millimetre perfect precision, requiring quality workmanship.

“We’re definitely detail-focused,” Adam says.

The business is based in Ocean Grove where many residents are choosing to renovate older, structurally sound dwellings.

“We’d much rather renovate a home to maintain its character and integrity, than see it knocked down”, says Adam. “Plus, we enjoy a challenge.”

The team at Advanced Cabinetry is thrilled to be the winner of the 2017 HIA Western Victoria Regional Housing Awards.

One of its recent projects was the renovation of a kitchen which left everyone involved very pleased with the finished product.

The client started with a brief and sketch of what they were hoping to achieve.

They wanted a country-style kitchen with rich warm timber benchtops and a butler’s pantry.

A major aspect was to differentiate the kitchen from the butler’s pantry without enclosing the room.

In order to create this, staff developed the concept of having 32mm two-pack panels with clear glass lites either side of the butler’s pantry.

This was a great solution because the panels provided a division between the two spaces while the glass facilitated a free-flowing feel.

It was of upmost importance that the kitchen was in keeping with and respected the Victorian architectural style of the home.

In accordance with this philosophy, the panels and island posts were painted in the same colour and finish as the walls, and the original skirting was added to the island posts.

These key design features added a somewhat structural element to the design and harmony to the home. The result was a practical yet aesthetically pleasing space.

Advanced Cabinetry is a service oriented business that has been built on best practice, in-house design capability and a strong customer service ethos.

Established in 1999 when it operated from a small garage, now fast forward 18 years and it is operating out of a purpose-built manufacturing facility and modern showroom at 134 Fussell Street, Ballarat.

The recently refurbished showroom offers fullsize kitchens, laundry, vanity and wardrobe displays showcasing the latest hardware and materials.

Tall order for Cats Geelong faces the prospect of being bundled out of the AFL finals in straight sets if it can’t beat Sydney tonight.

The Cats finished second on the ladder, but were belted to the tune of 51 by Richmond last Friday night.

The loss means Geelong will now have to win a premiership from the harder side of the finals fixture with the resurgent Swans tonight and then a potential match up with the Crows at Adelaide Oval in a preliminary final.

Coach Chris Scott will be plotting how to score more goals. Geelong’s 5.10.40 was its lowest score in a final since 1914.

Geelong had just 38 inside 50s, its lowest of the season and a huge 37 clangers.

Geelong’s slow start proved costly, although they got back into the game late in the second

quarter.

In contrast, Sydney is the AFL’s second-best starting team this season.

Qualifying finals have been played in various forms since 1972, but only one team has recovered from a margin of 51 points or more - as Geelong was beaten by on Friday night - to make the grand final.

That was the Cats in 1989 when they lost the qualifying final to Essendon by 76 points, before fighting back to win their next two games to make the grand final.

Losing a qualifying final isn’t the death sentence that many think it is.

Anglers jumped at the chance of a break in the weather over the past week, with offshore angling between Point Lonsdale and Barwon Heads popular on Sunday.

Trelly’s Fishing World Geelong’s Peri Stavropoulos and Kevin Hunter anchored in 30m out from Barwon Heads before setting out fresh Australian salmon baits.

Peri soon boated 7.5kg gummy shark, with the pair catching three in total, one of which was released, along with two seven gill sharks to 30kg - all without berley.

Squid fishing was excellent from St Leonards though to Clifton Springs, in terms of both numbers and size. Casting artificial jigs in size 3 was a standout tactic, with white colourations like the Shimano 14T working well in clean water of 3m to 4m.

Snapper anglers began fishing around the Point Richards channel and other outer-harbour spots, but reports remained slow. Small gummy sharks to 5kg were a by catch for anglers fishing the channel.

Anglers fishing soft plastics around inner Corio Bay found the salmon a little hit and miss, although fish were easy boat when schools were located.

Lake Purrumbete again turned on trophy brown trout fishing, with multiple fish over 4kg caught in a single day. Casting hard-body lures to fish chasing minnows did the trick, with anglers fishing into the evening finding the best results.

Lake Bullen Merri gave anglers chances to cross paths with Chinook salmon. Hugh Hanson banked himself a ripper of 2.6kg while casting a Daiwa TD 95 minnow landbased from the lake margins.

Deep Lake entertained anglers with brown and rainbow trout to 2kg. Trolling or casting Tassie Devils or Daiwa Double Clutch lures was effective, along with Powerbait on a running sinker rig.

Wurdee Boluc Reservoir gave anglers casting spoon-type lures plenty of action with a mix of redfin, brown and rainbow trout on the chew.

Next week should be good for squid, with the whole Bellarine Peninsula holding good numbers, while calm weather could present opportunities to fish for gummies offshore. Freshwater fishos should try casting or trolling white Tassie Devils at Lake Tooliorook or Deep Lake.

Cracking pace set as Hose is first home in century run Hamlyn Heights runner Blake Hose took out the relay at the Surf Coast Century on Saturday with a blistering 50km leg of 3.46.55.

Hose won the two-person 100km ultra marathon alongside Darlington runner David Byrne in just 7.15.00.

The 25-year-old described most of the run as comfortable, and his time was faster than the winner of the individual 50km event.

But he struggled in the final leg before crossing the finish line.

“That beach is horrible,” he said. “It’s a horrible way to finish a race, a soft beach.”

Ross Hopkins and Kylie Woods won their respective 100km races while Stephanie Auston and Simon Neale took out the 50km events.

The sixth Surf Coast Century saw more than 1100 competitors from across Australia and overseas run a gruelling off-road course along the beaches, 4WD tracks and hinterland trails.

Hopkins, 38, crossed the line in 8.43.31.

“You’ve just got to hang in there, and you never know what could happen, you know, it’s a long

“I didn’t beat my last year’s time, but I felt so tired in Leg 3 today,” the 43-year-old said. “I was just wanting to make it to the end, and I did so that’s awesome.”

“Seeing my family out on the course, my husband, my two kids, and my mum was so awesome, and of course the spectacular scenery, and all the other runners out there encouraging one another.”

International runner Angelique Plaire of Noumea rounded out the women’s podium in 10.23.59.
