BY JEREMY SOLLARS FROM the sheep’s back on the traprock to the woollen mills of Italy - that’s the journey Clive and Margaret Smith’s superfine wool makes every year.

The Amiens woolgrowers swapped Sydney careers in IT for Clive’s family property a bit over two decades ago and haven’t looked back.

The couple run a 5000-plus flock of Merino wethers on their 11,000 acres of country in the Goldfields Road area and as Rural Links went to print this month were just finishing off the annual shear, which runs for about eight weeks.

It’s just Clive and Margaret and this year shearer Clinton Thorn and roustabout Sheila Williams but they’re a well-honed team, and given the very specific nature of the wool’s market, quality wins over quantity when it comes to human resources - not to mention the product itself.

The Smiths are among a handful of Granite Belt and Southern Downs producers still in the wool game, holding out against

the scourge of wild dogs and proving the overseas market is still strong for what comes off the back of a Merino.

The Smith’s fine micron wool is primarily used for Italian suits, leaving the country most years in 50 to 60 bales of up to 200 kilos of ‘specialty wool’.

They pay painstaking attention to detail - including the grass seed content of their wool, which the Italians are most particular about - with Margaret a qualified ‘master classer’.

“The Italians know exactly what they want,” laughs Clive.

“They’re extremely passionate about what they do - well, they’re Italian after all.

“They’ll offer incentives above the market price if you have what they want.

“The buyers (in Australia) will usually tear your bale apart, but every now and then you get a buyer who just takes a look at the open bale and says, ‘yes, that’s right, you’re in’.

“That’s dream time for us.”

Clive says Italian suit-makers seek out wool which will produce “a pair of pants which won’t crease when you sit down”, meaning

Margaret Smith is a fully-qualified master-classer. fibre strength and structure and a “welldefined crimp, top to bottom” is paramount.

“It’s a tenderness test - they’re looking for that ‘buttery’ feel to the fleece,” he explained.

Dry conditions are a part of life on the traprock, but Clive says of his and Margaret’s first 15 years at Amiens “you wouldn’t take any of them”, compared to the last decade which he says has seen “fairly good springs” - the property averages around 700mm annually.

But while the Smiths and their neighbours generally have the dog problem under control - albeit with Clive and Margaret losing around 100 sheep to dogs in the last year - they are passionate advocates for future exclusion fencing to enhance improvements producers have made to internal fencing and advances in strategic, co-ordinated baiting.

Overall, sheep numbers on the traprock have declined from around the 300,000 mark to around 100,000 in the last five years thanks to the dog menace.

The Smith’s Merinos are shorn from the age of one year through to five, with threeyear-old wethers generally producing the best end product.

They go for a smaller-framed sheep which tends to yield the finer wool, and Clive says they deliberately understock the property in order to better manage the flock’s nutrition, including the use of lick supplements.

But their lower numbers also reflect their desire for a balanced lifestyle - including some time off every year travelling - and as Clive says, allow them to “just stick to what we like doing”.

While the State drought declaration for Southern Downs was removed back in April, post-Cyclone Debbie, there are plenty of farmers in our region experiencing very dry conditions and doing it very tough.

Micheal Fagg believes ‘drought declarations’ have little impact on the majority of assistance available to farmers in our region.

MICHEAL Fagg is not a fan of the word ‘drought’.

And it’s not because plenty of rural producers in our region are not still battling the effects of dry seasons, it’s because he’s just not sure what constitutes a drought anymore.

The Warwick-based rural financial counsellor has spent around three decades working with and around farmers and their finances in one capacity or another and has come to the conclusion there’s no such thing as a ‘normal’ season anymore.

Micheal is not a conservationist, but like many of those he assists in the rural sector he feels the science on climate change more than likely stacks up. More than ever, Micheal believes ‘planning’ and ‘sustainable farming practices’ are the keys to success in managing climatic risk.

Micheal, who works for the not-for-profit Rural Financial Counselling Service Southern Queensland (RFCS SQ), spends much of his time visiting farmers in need and helping them through the financial stress and strife that so often comes with making a living on the land.

He meets clients at his

irrespective of the region’s ‘drought’ assessment.

“There is still the option of applying for ‘Individually Droughted Property (IDP)’ declarations, where needed,” he told Rural Links.

“However, a lot of the assistance under drought declarations is actually available outside of them anyway, which many people don’t realise.

“As an example, you can apply for Queensland Rural and Industry Development Authority (QRIDA) Drought Assistance Concessional Loans without being ‘drought declared’.

“Farm Household Allowance is also available irrespective of a regions ‘Drought Declaration’ status.”

“But what’s a drought and what’s a normal season?

“I’m not sure anyone really knows the answer anymore and the reality is the weather has changed over the last 30 years or so.

“Local Drought Committees make informed decisions on drought declarations against ‘State Government’ criteria, looking at rainfall stats and what’s on the ground.

“But I really don’t think we can declare what a ’normal’ season is anymore - the science and the research on climate change would seem to indicate the climate is becoming more variable”.

Micheal is optimistic a break in the current dry period is close given the Bureau of Meteorology’s latest official spring outlook showing the possibility of above-average rainfall in areas near southeast Queensland, particularly in October.

Michael - who grew up on the family sugar cane farm at Bundaberg - spent 20 years

with the Commonwealth Bank in agri-business banking, before moving to Centrelink where he specialised in rural assistance for a number of years.

He’s been with the RFCS SQ for a bit over 12 months now and is one of 17 such counsellors around Southern Queensland - and gets a lot of satisfaction from helping producers in need.

But he also points out that many farmers delay asking for help, and on some occasions, delays in seeking early assistance can affect the ability to find solutions and resolve some issues.

“There is so much help available and I encourage people to contact me to discuss their situation and assistance options,” he said.

“There’s just so much assistance that isn’t taken up.

Dr Borrell said the high-quality entries came from near and far and there was particular interest in learning about soil health.

Local schools which took out major science and art prizes were Warwick Central State School, Pilton State School, Cecil Plains State School and Clifton State High School.

Chevalier College in New South Wales and Westbourne Grammar School in Victoria were also prize winners.

Costa Georgiadis, host of ABC’s ‘Gardening Australia’ and Professor Neal Menzies, head of UQ’s School of Agriculture and Food Sciences were among the

QUEENSLAND and New South Wales students converged in Warwick last month for the results of the 2017 Department of Agriculture and Fisheries’ Hermitage Research Facility Schools Plant Science Competition.

Hermitage Centre leader and UQ principal research fellow Dr Andrew Borrell said this year’s competition theme was ‘The Dirt on Soils’, focussing on the value of this natural resource and the importance of healthy soils in producing healthy plants that provide our food and fibre.

“This competition promotes rewarding and exciting careers in science and agriculture industries,” Dr Borrell said.

“National interest continues to grow each year, with more than 175 schools registered this year, including around 200 science and art entries.

Entries this year focused on experimenting with different soil types in growing healthy plants; researching the global importance of soils for food security; acting out the role of soil organisms in a card game; building soils mind maps, dioramas and food webs; and depicting what ‘future agriculture’ will look like in an art activity.

THE INDUSTRY - IN BRIEF FEEDLOT REFUSAL Southern Downs councillors received legal advice in a confidential session of their August meeting on their refusal of a proposed feedlot at Allora.

Council officers recommended the feedlot proposed by Layton and Sharalyn Free on Warfields Road did not comply with the region’s planning scheme due to its location and size.

The council received 49 submissions from the public about the feedlot proposal.

No appeal from the applicants against the council refusal had been filed by time of printing of Rural Links this month.

Councillors last month also approved a two-year extension for the operation of a feedlot operated by the Burge Pastoral Group on Tudor Valley Road, at Allora.

At the August meeting, mayor Tracy Dobie foreshadowed the formation by the council of an ‘Agriculture and Food Working Group’ for the region.

Cr Dobie made the comments following the council’s approval at the meeting of a proposed organic free-range egg farm at a property owned by Anthony and Rebecca Kinsella, on Jack Smith Gully Road at Freestone.

They intend to complete the project in stages, eventually running a maximum of 3000

laying hens at full production.

500 JOBS CUT The Churchill Abattoir at Ipswich will soon cease operations and the last day of cattle slaughter will be Thursday 28 September.

It comes after months of rumours circling the struggling facility, with 500 jobs to go as a result of the closure.

In a statement released in late August the company said cattle shortages and high prices had “devastated” the beef industry.

During the past few years the company has engaged with several potential investors to transform the abattoir into an export plant but that had been unsuccessful.

The company has assured all employees will be paid entitlements.

The abattoir may re-open in six to 12 months as an export plant.

The announcement comes at the same time Baiada announced it will close its Ipswich chicken processing facility next January and will cancel contracts with South East Queensland chicken growers.

The Queensland Chicken Growers Association (QCGA) has condemned the decision by Baiada accusing it of “blatant corporate profiteering at the expense of its viable and productive farmers”.

QCGA president Jodie Redcliffe estimated that the decision by Baiada to discontinue its SEQ production will strip growers of a conservative $150 million in lost production and devaluation of their farms.

“Alternatively, contact 1800 909 826.

“In the case where a dealer is not accessible, these items can be handed in at a police station.

Please contact the station to give prior notice before attending,” Mr Stewart said.

GUN AMNESTY Queensland Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan and Police Commissioner Ian Stewart are aiming to reduce the number of unregistered and unwanted firearms in Queensland through a national firearms amnesty.

Until 30 September, anyone who has an unregistered firearm or firearm-related article in their possession - for whatever reason - will have the chance to legally dispose of it or register it without penalty.

“There is no doubt that reducing unregistered firearms improves public safety,” Mr Ryan said.

“We are encouraging Queenslanders to take advantage of the amnesty to register or surrender their firearm without fear of prosecution.

“Firearms and firearm-related items should be handed in at licensed firearms dealers. A detailed list of all participating dealers is on the Queensland Police website at www.police.qld. gov.au

EXPORT TARGET SET Apple and pear exports of 10 per cent of production nationally are achievable within a decade, according to the ambitious new ‘Apple & Pear Industry Export Development Strategy’ released in August.

Apple and Pear Australia Limited (APAL) says key to achieving this goal will be a focus on high-value varieties targeted at niche and neighbouring markets, and seasonal opportunities through programmed, ongoing sales contracts managed by “collaborative and globallycompetitive export supply chains”.

APAL says this will be underpinned by a series of programs and strategies to boost grower knowledge of export requirements, encourage establishment of supply networks, grow exporter capability, infrastructure and logistics, target marketing in priority markets, conduct trade missions and establish systems delivering robust commercial trade intelligence.
