Small walk, big deal By Bonny Burrows What started as a small walk to unite those touched by mental illness and suicide has grown into a community campaign for increased support services in the area. The inaugural Melbourne Hope-

Walk, held in Pakenham on Sunday 10 September, was planned as a low-key community event for an estimated 100 people. Instead, in a response that blew its organisers away, 600 local residents clad in yellow and black turned out to the Lakeside Lake to show their sup-

port for those touched by or lost to suicide and mental illness. One organiser, Cardinia Shire councillor Carol Ryan, said the turn-out was “mind-blowing”. “It started as a personal thing between (fellow organiser) Bobo (Davis)

and I, and now it’s too big,” Cr Ryan said. Cr Ryan and Ms Davis have both experienced first-hand the devastation suicide and mental illness brings. Ms Davis’s world was turned upside down in April 2016 when her

22-year-old son Aaron killed himself after a seven-year battle with ice addiction. Cr Ryan almost lost a family member to the drug, but fortunately was able to find them help. Continued page 2

Cr Ryan said feedback was that this was certainly achieved. “One lady lost her husband two months ago and commented that she now understands a bit more,” she said. “Other feedback was that people were relieved they could finally talk about it, that thank God something was being done.” Now the mothers are working fearlessly to shine a light on the often taboo subjects to attract the support services they say are desperately needed to the shire. Their first initiative was the 1.5km walk. Next on the agenda are forums and the creation of community support groups, followed by government lobbying for the addition of local psychiatrists and mental illness specialists. Cr Ryan said the walk’s turn-out signalled a massive community desire for better support services. “That amount of support and great success on the day shows the community wants this,” Cr Ryan said. “We do have services in place but they’re not going to be enough for our growth.” Cr Ryan said all it took to start the process towards change was one game person, like Ms Davis, to share her story. “We need to take responsibility and start fighting for what we believe in. Then we’ll get progress,” Cr Ryan said. “We’re talking about people’s lives, we’re talking about saving lives and it’s a conversation that I’m going to continue.”

Care goes up the creek By Bonny Burrows Pakenham’s Kennedy Creek has become an “overgrown disgrace” due to neglect, according to a nearby resident. Carolyn Murphy argues the creek, which runs through Fallingwater Estate, has increasingly become an eyesore over the past decade due to rubbish, weeds and overgrown vegetation, and says no-one will clean it up. “I live adjacent to Fallingwater Estate. I go for walks pretty much every day and it’s getting worse and worse,” Ms Murphy said. “It’s full of blackberries, rubbish and is overgrown beyond belief. Right now it’s an absolute haven for snakes.” The former council worker recently contacted Cardinia Shire to lodge a request for maintenance, but was told the waterway was Melbourne Water’s responsibility. “They agreed it was a

mess and disgraceful but said unfortunately it wasn’t their area (to maintain),” Ms Murphy said. “They suggested I send an email to Melbourne Water, which I was really surprised at, because when I worked at the council I had contacts at Melbourne Water. They shouldn’t ask a resident to get in touch with a responsible authority, but I did.” The water authority returned Ms Murphy’s call a week later on 5 September, and she said the news shocked her. “They said they’d come and have a look because they have nothing scheduled for maintenance,” Ms Murphy said. “How did that happen? How did council and Melbourne Water forget a creek they were supposed to look after? “Does this mean it’s nev-

er been maintained?” Despite being assured the rubbish and weeds would be removed, Ms Murphy said Melbourne Water refused to cut back the overgrown vegetation. “I was told they wouldn’t be removing native vegetation - I said it could be streamed back, but they said ‘No, we won’t be doing that’,” she said. “Seriously, that’s the best they can do?” The Pakenham resident of 20 years said the ordeal left her feeling like Fallingwater Estate was a poor cousin to neighbouring developments. “It’s really disappointing when you’ve got estates like Lakeside and Heritage Springs which are all maintained and we’re getting ripped off over here,” Ms Murphy said. “I don’t think I was asking too much.”

Cardinia Shire Council’s open space team leader Kevin Alexander said council was aware of concerns surrounding the maintenance of Kennedy Creek. “Council has spoken to the resident and provided details around the areas of responsibility between council and Melbourne Water,” Mr Alexander said. “It is council’s understanding that Melbourne Water is responsible for the creek’s maintenance, including the surrounding flora and weed removal around its natural riverbank. Council is responsible for the nature strip maintenance alongside the creek and any assets it may own, including park benches.” Melbourne Water was contacted for comment by Star News on 7 September, but as of 13 September had not provided a response.

Defence lawyer Bernard Keating said Simmonsâ€™ chief problem was the â€œquantityâ€? of crime rather than the seriousness of the offences. Mr Vandersteen noted that Simmons had good family support and â€œrelatively limitedâ€? priors until recently. He offered a sentence indication of five monthsâ€™ jail with a 12-month community corrections order. Simmons, who appeared via a custody video link, told the court: â€œIâ€™ll take it.â€? Dandenong-based magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted Corey Ian Simmons, like many others, had already breached and re-offended on a community corrections order and a drug treatment order. â€œYou sit here every day and hear people who say they will comply with orders. You put them on orders and we deal with an awful amount of breaches. â€œWhy keep bringing someone onto the same order when itâ€™s not working? â€œThe chances of him complying with a court order are very low.â€? Police probe three armed robberies Police are investigating three armed robberies at bottle shops in Casey last week. Detectives have been told a man attended a bottle shop on Oâ€™Shea Road, Berwick just before 1pm on Wednesday. The man allegedly took two bottles of liquor, telling

an employee he had a knife in his pocket and not to try to stop him. A second robbery occurred about 7.10pm at another bottle shop on BerwickCranbourne Road, Clyde North where he allegedly stole three bottles of liquor. At 7.30pm police believe

the same man attended a third bottle shop on Springhill Dr, Cranbourne North and allegedly took a box of 24 pre-mixed liquor cans. In each instance the man made the same threats to staff. The man was wearing beige pants and a blue jacket.

I am a mother and a grandmother and can only imagine how the loved ones of those locked up on Manus must be suffering along with their sons, brothers, uncles and grandsons. They are gradually being transferred to Lorengau on Manus Island which is a transit centre that can house 280 people - their number is 700+. What is to become of these people? No work, no healthcare, no protection, no future. PNG have made it clear that they don’t want them. The government can choose to end people’s suffering in detention and allow them to live safely in our Australian community while being processed. Act compassionately, bring them here. Socially speaking On Monday 11 September, the Cranbourne Berwick News Facebook page shared the story of a youth gang that stormed into a Coles store at Springhill Shopping Centre. It is alleged a group of about 15 to 20 youths entered the supermarket, located at a shopping centre on the corner of Thompsons and Narre Warren roads, shortly after 6pm. They went through and grabbed a range of items, leaving the store soon after without making payment. The teenagers were perceived to be of African appearance and a number of them were wearing hooded jumpers and backpacks. The story sparked some strong opinions online. Trish O’Grady: No one was injured, maybe not physically, but I’m sure a lot have been injured mentally. How terrifying.

Home of the brave By Brendan Rees A selfless act by a Botanic Ridge father and son has earned them bravery awards. Rodney John Smith and his son Rory Samuel Smith received commendations for bravery in the latest Australian Bravery Awards. On the morning of 24 September 2007, the duo rescued an unconscious man at Boomerang Beach, New South Wales. Mr Smith entered the surf at Boomerang Beach, near Forster, to go boogie boarding with his 15-year-old son and a friend. After a short time in the water, Mr Smith noticed that his friend was

floating upside down. Mr Smith and his son immediately made their way to their friend and attempted to keep him afloat. They found themselves caught in a rip and were dragged further out to sea, as onlookers called for help. Large waves continued to knock the man off his boogie board, forcing Mr Smith to duck-dive under the water in order to pick him up and rest his head on the board. His son assisted in keeping the man’s head above water, while Mr Smith continued to undertake resuscitation. Bystanders entered the water and rendered assistance to the man, and

bought them all to shore. Emergency services arrived and were able to revive him. For their actions, Mr Smith and son Rory were commended for brave conduct. Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove awarded the bravery decorations, expressing his gratitude and congratulations to all Australians honoured for their contribution the nation. “We are fortunate as a community to have so many outstanding people willing to put themselves in harm’s way to assist others in need, and it is only fitting that they have today been recognised through the Australian Honours system,” he said.

“These awards have drawn national attention to the personal efforts of individuals, made willingly, without thought of personal risk.” “Today’s recipients now join the company of many recipients of Australian honours whose actions have enriched our community and whose values we hold dear - professionalism, compassion, dedication, generosity, tolerance, and energetic ambition,” Sir Peter said. “On behalf of all Australians, I thank them for their bravery. They are a source of courage, support and inspiration, and we are a stronger, safer and more caring nation because of them.”

Girls illegally hired By Cam Lucadou-Wells A registered sex offender has pleaded guilty to hiring four teenage girls at his Beaconsfield restaurant without notifying police. Anton Mai, who owns Tulip Thai restaurant, faced Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on five charges of failing to comply with his reporting obligations. Mai was registered as a sex offender for life, with two prior convictions for breaching reporting requirements in 2015, the court heard. On the latest charges, he failed

to disclose that his restaurant hired a 15-year-old and three 16-year-old girls between November 2015 and March 2017. Mai, who represented himself, told the court on 11 September that his wife was “always the supervisor”. He had also failed to notify police of a delay in coming home from a trip to the US in late November. Mai had told police he’d return on Christmas Day. He emailed them with plans for a 17-day extension to his trip only

after police made inquiries with his family on 5 January. In a later police interview at Pakenham, Mai said he had been unable to travel home as planned due to not having a valid visa, the court was told. It had been due to “an error and a mistake”, he told police. Mai was registered for life on the state’s sexual offenders’ registry after being found guilty of offences in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court in 2008, the court heard. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Jaimie Jeffs told the court that

since then, Mai had reported multiple changes of personal circumstances, such as business details, internet service providers and travel plans. Magistrate David Starvaggi said Mai faced possible jail if he again breached his reporting obligations. “You need to understand that this is incredibly important legislation and it’s important you comply with it.” Mai was convicted and placed on a 12-month community corrections order with 150 hours of unpaid work.

A Cranbourne East family is seeking legal advice after being charged over an alleged dog attack on neighbouring sheep. Their nine-year-old rottweiler Sophie has been seized and impounded for more than six weeks by Casey Council since being captured in the sheep paddock on 23 July. Casey Council has alleged that two sheep were killed and three seriously injured by two dogs. The other dog is yet to be found. Sophie escaped the family’s yard when a fence was damaged by a tree during storms the night before the incident, owner Angela Duffield said. She says Sophie is placid, old and unable to run due to “two bad back hips”. The dog is incapable of attacking sheep, Ms Duffield says. “It’s gone on for too long, and Sophie has lost a lot of weight compared to when she went in.

Dena Aljamal was announced as the winner of this year’s Lindsay King Arts Award during the Mayoral Arts Dinner which was held at the City of Casey Civic Centre on Friday 25 August. The youngest-ever nominee for the award, Tahlia Williams, was also recognised with a special commendation. The Lindsay King Arts Award is the City of Casey’s most prestigious award for the arts and recognises people whose initiatives have made a significant contribution to the arts in Casey. Mrs Aljamal said she was proud to receive the award. “The way I feel towards the Lindsay King Arts Award is a combination of some special moments in life that are unforgettable, like celebrating a wedding day, witnessing the birth of the first baby, graduating from high school and university. Fighting ‘forgotten cancers’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells With just one blister on her foot and departed loved ones in mind, walker Denise Lyons crossed the line arm in arm with brother Steve. Ms Lyons had trekked 32 kilometres from her childhood home in Nar Nar Goon to Hampton Park on 9 September, just six years after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She walked with the well-wishes and cheers of family and friends and in memory of her late sister Anne on the 15th anniversary of her death. Along the way, she has raised more than $3500 for research into the ‘forgotten cancers’. These cancers are the rare strains that receive little publicity, little research funding and five-year survival rates as low as seven per cent. Both Anne and Ms Lyons’s father have succumbed to ‘forgotten cancers’. Ms Lyons, now an avid walker, says she didn’t feel the pinch until she was just three kilometres from the finishing line. Her brother Steve who flanked her for the whole journey was in more acute agony by the end, she said. Along the way, they had a chance to catch up on life, talk about their kids and their journeys. Meanwhile walkers from her keen support crew, including other cancer survivors, kept her company on various stages. Her nieces and nephews spruiked the cause to strangers along the journey, raising $200 on the day. Childhood friends from Nar Nar Goon, where Ms Lyons’s parents ran a bakery, reminisced. ‘It was a really good energy. People were really buzzing and ready to take it up.

I wouldn’t imagine I’d be doing a 32-kilometre walk in a day.” Being open about her own illness opened up conversations with work

colleagues at Dandenong Hospital, she said. “Not every cancer story is the absolute worst thing.” After the walk, inspired supporters were pressing to join in a repeat event next year. In what was envisaged to become an eagerly anticipated annual community event, the South East Feast will combine and celebrate the authentic cuisine and entertainment from a range of cultural groups that make up the thriving Berwick community. The event will feature locally produced gourmet products, craft beers and wines, as well as a number of entertainment options including multicultural cooking demonstrations, performance artists, buskers and stage performances. Principal Roger Page promised the day will have something for everyone. “We’ll have three stages running throughout the day,” he said. “The large performance stage will be surrounded by food trucks and gourmet food sales areas. “People can watch performances from a range of local community, school and cultural bands and we also hope to run some lessons so people can have a go at cultural cooking and dancing. “There will also be a petting

The Oncology Rehabilitation Outpatient program at St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital is a six-week, twice a week program incorporating information sessions, meditation, tai chi, exercise and hydrotherapy, which is tailored to suit individual needs and goals. As St John of God CEO Lisa Norman explained, the information sessions are interactive and discuss topics to assist in day-to-day life such as healthy food choices when people aren’t feeling their best, tips on managing stress, the benefits of exercise and providing instruction to participants on how to pace themselves to get through the day. “The meditation session will help you wind down and refocus and the tai chi session is great for balance, posture and breathing,” Mrs Norman said. “Exercise is an integral part of rehabilitation and plays an important part in reducing cancer related fatigue and improving quality of life.” Hydrotherapy is new to oncology rehabilitation, but early research shows it is an effective method of exercise. “The water is 34 degrees and while the water resistance provides a great workout, we let you float around as part of your ‘cool down’, so it is a very relaxing session,” Mrs Norman said. “Whilst we encourage everyone to participate, we understand hydrotherapy is not for everyone, so an alternative gym session can be provided.” Those who want to get started can just ask a specialist or GP for a referral to one of St John of God’s rehabilitation physicians who will complete a medical assessment to enter the program. Two years for drug burglar By Cam Lucadou-Wells A drug addict who terrified occupants as he broke into two Cranbourne homes has been jailed for up to two years. Daryl Kelly, 41, of Cranbourne, frightened a young mother with two sleeping children as he stared at her through a kitchen window, tried to open a rear security door and then smashed his way into a backyard bungalow through a window on 15 August. Kelly ransacked kitchen and bedroom cupboards inside the bungalow, then fled over the backyard fence when police arrived, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 11 September.

Less than 30 minutes later, he entered another home by lifting off roof tiles. The occupants were woken by the sound of Kelly over the roof cavity. The residents called out to Kelly that they were calling police and heard Kelly strike at the roof or ceiling. When police arrived, Kelly’s leg was hanging through the ceiling plaster in the kitchen. He escaped via the home garage’s roller door and was chased down by police on foot. During his resisted arrest, Kelly was sprayed with capsicum foam. In Narre Warren police cells, he hurled a filled bottle of water at a po-

lice officer, saying “You’re supposed to have ambos here ages ago.” Kelly was also charged over a 120 km/h police pursuit on South Gippsland Highway on 14 February. He was unlicensed, recorded a 0.033 blood-alcohol reading and was breaching his bail night curfew at the time. From his car, police seized a centre punch modified into a hammer as well as a Bear Grylls survival knife, the court was told. He was also charged with unlicensed driving and ice and cannabis possession in March and May. A former interstate truckie, Kelly had been unemployed for three years

since injuring his shoulder, his lawyer told the court. Kelly’s 27 days in remand custody were the “first time he’s been clean since the age of 11”, the lawyer said. His “significant” drug issues included cannabis, GHB and ice, “using as much as he get. “For his most recent and serious offending, he couldn’t remember anything that happened. “He thinks he hadn’t slept for 19 days prior to the offending.” The lawyer conceded Kelly’s adherence to an 18-month supervised community corrections order at the time was “extremely poor”.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted Kelly’s “unusual” and escalating offending reflected his extensive drug use. “He would have struck terror in all of the complainants. He is so intent on getting that property to get that next lot of drugs. “He doesn’t remember it, but they certainly do. “What do you do when you’ve got someone so intent on entering your home?” Kelly was jailed for two years with a 10-month non-parole period, fined $500 and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Driver’s a walker after stubbies meet wombat A Berwick pensioner has been warned he could be jailed if he’s booked again for drink-driving at more than four times the legal limit. Garry Roy Manning told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that he’d been returning from a Welshpool fishing trip

when he was pulled over by police at Princes Highway, Traralgon on Saturday, 13 May. He recorded a blood-alcohol reading of .216; his driving licence was immediately suspended. The court heard that Manning admitted drinking “half a dozen” stubbies of full-strength beer before his

drive. He’d gone to bed earlier after having a “big day”. “For some reason I woke up one hour after I went to bed and drove home.” Manning told the court that during the trip home he drove into a wombat,

causing $3000 damage to his car. Magistrate David Starvaggi noted Manning had previously been charged with breaching an alcohol-interlock condition, as well as drink-driving at .16. “I can’t stress enough - don’t do this again.

“If you come back a third time with a higher reading, you’re almost asking a court to put you in jail. “No-one wants to do that to you.” Manning was convicted and fined $1500. He was disqualified from driving for the statutory minimum of three and a half years.

Disability jobs on the line By Casey Neill A Dandenong disability enterprise is reeling after the City of Casey ended its eight-year relationship. Gateway Industries CEO Alan Warwick said it was “a kick in the guts more than anything” to miss out on the contract to provide mulching, weeding and planting throughout the municipality. He said the decision would affect two supervisors and eight to 12 employees. “We’ve had a contract for eight years,” Mr Warwick said. “We worked with them prior to that through Fulton Hogan (as a subcontractor). “We’ve never had anything but positive feedback. “I’m deeply hurt.” The registered charity that offers employment, training and support for adults with disabilities in Greater Dandenong and Casey started more than 30 years ago as a Rotary Club of Dandenong initiative. Mr Warwick said the council told him the decision was based on price but did not provide further explanation. “Our guys average $4.80 to $6 an hour plus a supervisor,” he said. Mr Warwick said he was now looking for other outdoor gardening work “to keep these guys employed and having a meaningful life, basically”. “I understand they’ve got a business to run as well,” he said. Gateway president Russell Smith said the news had “really hit us hard” and would have a big impact on the budget. “It’s going to cause us quite a lot of challenge,” he said. “It’s pretty devastating for us.”

City of Casey city presentation manager David Richardson said Gateway Industries was previously one of a panel of contractors on a fixed term. “The contract was let in July 2013 for two years with an option of two one-year extensions,” he said. “The expiry date of the contract was fixed and known for all contractors with the final extension of the contract in 2016. “Gateway Industries would have received 12 months’ notice that the contract would expire in July 2017.”

Mr Richardson said the tender for the service was publicly advertised on 6 May and closed on 31 May, and the council received 25 submissions. “Following a rigorous evaluation process against established criteria, including price and quality considerations, the recommendation was for the contract to be awarded to a panel of six providers,” he said. The council endorsed the decision on 15 August. “Due to the competitive and transparent process in tendering, previous

contractors may miss out on the new contracts,” he said. “We understand that the process may cause disappointment for the old contractors when they have previously delivered a good service. “Council would like to acknowledge the work previously undertaken by Gateway Industries. “The energy and enthusiasm Gateway staff approached their work made them a pleasure to work with.” Councillor Amanda Stapeldon said

Paul loved the Yabbies By Russell Bennett Both the Pakenham Upper/ Toomuc Cricket Club and the local community are remembering Paul Garvey as a loving and devoted family man who poured countless hours of hard work into his beloved Yabbies. Paul passed away recently from heart complications aged just 67, but although his was a life cut far too short, his was a life incredibly well lived. The dearly beloved husband of Elizabeth, Paul was a loving father to Andrea, Patrick, Adrian and Gillian, as well as a loved father-in-law, grandfather, and brother and was the brother-in-law of Kooweerup legend John Glasscock. A statement on the Yabbies’ Facebook page shortly after his passing helped to outline just what he meant to the club. “A life member of our cricket club, Paul could be seen up at his beloved ground on many Saturday evenings after a home game,” the post read. “He was always eager to

find out how you went during the day, and always offered advice. Whether the advice was about digging in at the crease, or how to save a dollar it was always welcome.” Paul’s great mate Clive Fielder paid special tribute to him, saying: “He was a great bloke. I only met him when he moved to Upper Pakenham in the mid-1990s and his boys were playing junior cricket. “He took over the scoring for his boys at their cricket during the morning for the juniors and the seniors in the afternoon, and then he really started getting involved. “He even used to have the caravan park here in Pakenham up until recently.” Clive explained that Paul was always doing something to help his club. “He was doing the bar roster and then he took on all these different roles,” he said. “He was secretary for three years, he was treasurer in two stints for 11 years, and then he was on the rec reserve committee

for 21 years. This was his 21st. “We were very good friends - he was a social sort of guy and loved a glass of red wine or two.” Another of Paul’s great mates, Chris Gunton, explained that he’d even received a certificate of appreciation from the Victorian Government (the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning) in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the community. “Paul worked tirelessly at the reserve, not only managing the books to perfection, but he also managed the reserve and surrounds - cutting the grass, trimming trees, planting gardens, doing regular maintenance to the grounds and facilities to ensure all users of this facility had a wonderful experience every time they visited Pakenham Upper,” he said. Paul and his wife Liz met at a local dance and were married at St John’s in Kooweerup. They owned and ran the Pakenham caravan park for 31 years

Paul Garvey's name will long be synonymous with the Pakenham Upper Recreation Reserve. and during this time Paul also worked full-time as plant manager at Pakenham Blue Metal (now Holcim). In 2004, Paul was recognised for his service to the Yabbies - awarded with life membership. The following year he was named Best Clubperson. Though, as Paul’s eulogy read, he had a large physical presence, he was the gentlest of giants, a true gentleman and his memory will never be forgotten.

The night of nights for the Big V outfit recognises all the outstanding contributions made from those associated with the Division 2 Youth League Women’s side, the Division 2 Youth League Men, and the Division 2 Senior Men. Valued members of the Warriors family were also recognised for their efforts throughout the year. Nerita Jensen was awarded the Peter Williams Memorial Clubperson Award for this year, and she was also presented a thank you award along with Paul Raistrick, Deb Drew, Marja Fredrickson, Wayne Armstrong, Ben Craven and Doug Drew. Team managers Karen Lierse, Mikaela Greer and Adele Gallagher were also recognised for their tireless contributions. For the senior men’s outfit, which advanced all the way to the Division 2 championship series under coach Brent Russell, skipper Ben Gaze was named Most Valuable Player, Cody Fredrickson Most Improved, and Trent Lee the Defensive Player of the Year, while Craig Drew and Mike Godfrey were named Coaches Award winners. Underdog vs invincible By David Nagel The irresistible force versus the immovable object - it’s a match made in heaven when a frugal Berwick and a free-scoring Narre Warren collide on grand final day for the first time in history at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday. Talk about precious - the silverware on offer is such a seriously precious commodity for both clubs. Berwick, a club that has existed since the 1890s, has won just seven flags, while the Magpies, formed in 1953, have nine. Just 16 joyous days have been celebrated between two clubs that have an overall existence of roughly 190 years - it’s bloody incredible when you think about it! Berwick average a premiership every 6600 days, while the Magpies are cruising in comparison about one every 2500 ... told you - they’re hard to win. And this week will be no different. Narre Warren coach Heath Black will take the underdog into the contest; he likes it that way and especially so when the opponent has not tasted defeat this season. Black has felt that type of pressure before, and can’t wait for the opportunity to strike. “That’s what it is, an opportunity, and I’ve been involved in a team that has gone through the year undefeated, later in my career, and the team we played didn’t get within 10 goals during the season and beat us by eight points in the big one,” Black said.. “We won’t tap into that too much, but I do love being the underdog and that’s what we are this week. What happens during the home and away season means nothing this week ... we both start from scratch.” And starting from scratch has been the Magpies one-wood in recent times, burying Beaconsfield

with a 7.2 to 1.2 first quarter in the first semi-final before backing that up with an even better 7.2 to 1.0 opening onslaught against Cranbourne last week. And it was their former skipper Michael Collins who has twice led the way. Cranbourne paid Collins absolutely no respect last week and paid a very heavy price indeed, with Narre Warren’s greatest ever player racking up some incredible first quarter numbers. He had 17 possessions in the first term alone, gathering seven kicks and 10 handballs - also taking five marks and kicking two inspirational goals from outside 50. One man who had a perfect view of the action was Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman, who must have been astounded with the latitude, afforded the Magpies star. Collo wins probably 75 percent of his one-on-ones - but expect Kemperman to make him earn those possessions this week, because a repeat of that 17-possession first quarter would spell some serious trouble for the Wickers. Give players like Nick Scanlon, Aaron Wilson, Jake Richardson, Luke Cody and Stewie Scanlon some galloping room and the Wickers will be right on the back foot. Eagles pecked out of sight By David Nagel Narre Warren’s watershed moment has arrived after the mighty Magpies ended the brave run of Cranbourne with a 42-25 victory in Saturday’s preliminary final at Pakenham. The dominant team of the last two years, the back-to-back reigning champions will now face their nemesis of 2017 - Tooradin-Dalmore - in a grand final that looms as the landmark moment in their recent history. But hold that thought for a moment - first we need to dissect the Magpies advance to the big dance. Cranbourne came out firing, taking the early lead, before the Magpies settled to take an 11-6 advantage into quarter time. Their first-quarter dominance stemmed from precise ball-movement through the middle of the court from the likes of Erin Clark (wing defence), Leigh Taylor (wing attack) and Britt Mashado (centre). That last feed into goalers Chloe Phillips (goal shooter) and Tayla Shannon (goal attack) was crucial, with Eagles’ defenders Tara Cecil (goal keeper) and Sharni Lambden (goal defence) the best in the business at picking off the loose ball. But, despite the Eagles fight, there was an air of inevitability about this one after quarter time, the Magpies gradually pulling away with a superior brand of netball. They stretched

their five-goal lead to eight by half time and had a grand final berth assured with a 10-goal break at the three-quarter time. “We went in with a game plan, and there were definitely times when we strayed from those plans, but we got the job done,” said Magpies cocoach Jade Heinrich. But the Magpies now face clearly the biggest challenge of their threeyear journey under the leadership of Jade and her husband Greg. The Magpies have been the masters of performing at their absolute best on the big stage, thumping Hampton Park 59-34 in the 2015 decider and having a comfortable 44-31 win over Beaconsfield last year. But they won’t be the red-hot favourites this time around! This year they’ve suffered backto-back losses for the first time over the journey, and were dealt a savage blow by the Seagulls in the second semi-final. Kelly Andrews’ girls came out firing, producing a physicality that led to a commanding 43-28 victory and a direct passage to the only game that truly matters. And it also gave them a 2-1 advantage over the Magpies this year. Jade knows this is a massive challenge, but is confident her girls are up for the fight.

“They set the tone last time, but we learned a lot and we know what Tooradin will throw at us this time around,” Jade said. “It’s definitely our biggest challenge, but we want the competition to get better and we’re ready to throw everything at this game. If we win, we deserve all the accolades that come our way, and if we lose, so be it. It should be a great game and a huge challenge for both clubs. We’re hungry to take them on again.” This is a genuine 50-50 contest, where every possession and every sacrifice for a team-mate could make all the difference as to who has their name inscribed on the 2017 premiership cup. The Seagulls, chasing their first flag since 2006, the Magpies facing the moment of truth that will define them as either a dynasty - or just a very, very good netball team. Who will win the war of attrition through the midcourt? Will Sara Duncan, Emma Iacovou, Jess Cox and Ebony Dolan be able to sustain their effort over four quarters or will the grand final experience of Clark, Taylor, and gun-defender Tracey Dell, get the Magpies home in a close one? Questions, questions, questions ... and they’ll all be answered by 4pm on Saturday.

Astra’s a timeless classic By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Holden is very serious about its smallto-medium Astra range. In December 2016 it launched a five-door hatch; a four-door sedan - the subject of this test in topline LTZ format - came out in June this year, and a station wagon will be added to before the end of the year. Sales of the hatch weren't as high as GM-Holden anticipated and weren't helped by the traditionally slow January/ February holiday and back-toschool periods so recommended prices were dropped a few months after the launch to try and kick things along. Astra sedan prices probably started lower than originally anticipated, from $20,490 through to $29,790, putting them right into the thick of the fray in this class. Dealers are under pressure to get the Astra range up and running ASAP and can often be talked into picking up some, maybe even all, of the on-road charges. The Astra sedan is built in a GM factory in South Korea. It's finished to the very high standard that has impressed us in vehicles from that country in recent years. Holden Astra sits on all-new vehicle modular architecture that trims weight by as much as 120 kg compared to the old model. This adds performance at the same time as fuel consumption decreases. Neat styling that's likely to remain timeless is a feature of the new Holden Astra sedan. enough but doesn’t really break any new ground in its rear end. A sporting rear lip spoiler is fitted to the two topline models, the LT and LTZ. Infotainment is centred around a colour touchscreen that’s neatly integrated into the stylish dashboard. It uses the latest Holden MyLink system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s USB input with iPod connectivity. A clever design feature is the thumb rest to steady your hand while reaching the screen with your forefinger. There's a comprehensive range. The entry level Astra LS has 16-inch alloy wheels, a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen, steering wheel mounted controls, a six

speaker audio system and cruise control. Astra LS+ adds a leather-faced steering wheel, automatic high beam, LED daytime running lights (DRLs), Holden Eye forward facing camera, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, forward distance indicator, and forward collision alert. The Astra LT features 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8.0-inch touchscreen and DAB+ radio. Heated door mirrors are handy in wet weather. It also has front park assist, side blindspot alert, passive entry, push-button start, advanced park assist, and automatic wipers. The topline Astra LTZ we tested had 18-inch alloy wheels, climate

controlled air, an electric sunroof, chromed exterior window surrounds, chromed interior highlights combined with piano black (the latter, as usual, picking up dust within minutes of it being brushed off…) and heated front seats. The only engine offered in Holden Astra sedan is a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol producing 110 kW of power and 240 Nm of torque in the six-speed automatic we tested. Astra hatch comes with this engine, but has the option of a more powerful 1.6 unit. This may, or may not, be offered in the sedan later. On the safety front, all models have six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), automatic headlights, a rear view camera and rear park assist. Features are added to as the model grades increase, for details the Models section of this report. The front seats are a good size, and comfortable in normal driving, there's less side support than you may like if you do hammer it along. Try for yourself on the sort of roads you normally drive on, and perhaps take some potential passengers along for the ride.

Rear seats have space for two adults and they will have enough legroom unless those in the front like their seats well back. A third grown-up can fit without too much hip and shoulder rubbing. Three kids is a more likely load. The boot is well shaped and a good size, its added volume being an advantage in any sedan when compared with a hatch. However, the coupe-like slope at Astra's rear does mean it can't carry very bulky items. The 1.4-litre turbo engine is a lively unit that’s a real pleasure to sit behind. There’s some turbo lag, but once that has passed there’s plenty of torque to provide good hill climbing and to safe overtaking. Fuel consumption was in the fives and sixes during motorway sections of our drive route. This rose to seven to nine litres per 100 kilometres around town. Perfectly acceptable in this class and a sign that the reduced weight of the car certainly plays its part. GM-Holden engineers and stylists were heavily involved in the global scene from the earliest days of this Astra’s design. So it doesn't surprise that its steering and ride are very much tailored to Australian driver tastes - and harsh Aussie road conditions.
