Ocean Grove’s Division 3 netball side suffered a heart-breaking one-goal loss to Geelong Amateur in the grand final at Drysdale on Saturday. Beaten, but far from disgraced, the Grubbers can hold their heads high. For more JAMIE CULLUM pictures, see page 31.

New candidates New candidates have emerged to contest the council ward of Bellarine at October’s election. Ocean Grover Stephanie Asher confimed on the weekend she would be contesting. The two-time mayoral candidate is determined that the Bellarine Peninsula is properly considered in council decisions. Ms Asher finished second to Darryn Lyons in the 2013 mayoral election and has also stood at federal

and state elections. “For too long, this area what is now the Bellarine Ward - has played second fiddle to Geelong,” she said. “It’s time the coastal communities, as well as central and northern Bellarine, were considered properly. Decisions for this region should not all be about the city of Geelong. “Many people who live on the peninsula cherish what makes it

special. It is not Geelong.” Drysdale resident and Girl Guides stalwart Anne Brackley and Marcus Hill’s Jim Mason AM have also announced that they will be nominating for the upcoming City of Greater Geelong elections. Ocean Grover Stewart Webb and Portarlington resident Trent Sullivan have also declared they are in the running. “A lot of Bellarine residents have lost faith in the council and

I think we need to give back to the residents a sense of ownership and mutual respect," Mr Mason said in a statement. “I will remain mindful of a balanced approach and the needs of the whole Bellarine. I will work hard for you, listen, and consult." A postal vote will decide the Bellarine Ward’s three councillors and 11 councillors in total for Geelong on 27 October. Jim Mason
