Boost for garden The Dandenong Ranges is set to wave farewell to the name National Rhododendron Garden, instead welcoming in the iconic garden’s new title - Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden.

The name change aims to recognise the evolution of the much-loved garden into significant botanic collection of cool-climate plants.

The announcement comes after a community consultation period was conducted throughout May to June this year.

The decision came down to a suggested pair of options, with the eventual winner decided over the name Olinda Botanic Garden.

Member for Monbulk, James Merlino, in May this year announced the garden was to undergo a name change and be formally gazetted as a botanic garden

by Parks Victoria.

The name change recognises the significance of the extensive plant collections at the garden and enhances the Dandenong Ranges’ reputation as one of Victoria’s great garden destinations.

In total, 246 responses were received about determining a new name via surveys, emails or in person through a public submission form.

Parks Victoria area chief ranger, Terrence Moon, said the public had been forthcoming in providing input on the decision.

“We’re really pleased with the public response and the choice of the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden as the preferred new name,” he said.

“The name ‘Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden’ recognises the significance of the extensive plant collections at the National Rhododendron Garden and positions the park as the premier cool-climate public garden.

“The chosen name will definitely help strengthen the Dandenong Ranges’ reputation as a premier destination for gardens of significance in Victoria.”

Mr Moon said the public feedback results were positive, with 97 per cent supporting the garden to include the word ‘botanic’, and 45 per cent of votes citing the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden as the most popular choice.

Parks Victoria has previously noted the garden is more diverse than the current name suggests.

In addition to rhododendrons, the garden boasts a large collection of rare and exotic plants, including magnolias, camellias, proteas and cherry trees.

It also features a collection of Southern Chinese plants, an alpine plant collection and examples of one of the world’s oldest and rarest trees - the Wollemi pine.

Plight of Bumble Bee A talented group of students from Mt Dandenong Primary has made it through to the state finals of Wakakirri, which will be held at Hamer Hall in Melbourne on Monday 18 September.

Wakakirri is a national story/ dance festival, where both primary and secondary schools tell stories through dance, as Indigenous people have for thousands of years. This year, Mt Dandenong’s performance is ‘The B Files: The Plight of the Bumble Bee’, which explores the importance of the world’s bee population.

The Hills Food Frontier (THFF) in Tecoma is at the forefront of a ‘food revolution’ in the Dandenong Ranges.

THFF is a volunteer-based group that inspires, mobilises and equips the hills community to choose, grow, share and eat good food.

Their latest project has just come to an end with the construction of a food forest.

Using permaculture principles, the food forest has incorporated edible shrubs, companion plants and a diverse group of vegetables and fruits.

“The Hills Food Frontier wants to make ugly places beautiful by growing food,” president, Shanti Mclaren said.

Over the past year volunteers have been working hard to construct the sophisticated design which ensures the three by 15-metre section of garden is built as efficiently as possible.

Michael Johnson, owner of The Basin Backyard helped the group to maximise usage of space.

“It’s about making maximum use of the limited amount of space available so we can fit as many fruit trees as possible ... one of the best ways to do this is to have an espalier,” he said.

“We put in six varieties of fruit and in the future with grafting we can turn six into 18.

“At the moment it’s fantastic but in the future it’s going to be spectacular - the amount of produce that will come out of the limited space will be really impressive.”

The addition of the organically grown food forest to the flame garden will help promote food secu-

rity in Tecoma and provide access to healthy free food and education for those who need it.

The Hills Food Frontier also have a free food cupboard which is part of their Food is Free Tecoma program where the produce they get from the community garden goes towards the community and people who need it.

“There are 700 people that are homeless in the Yarra Ranges,” Fay Webster who is part of the Tecoma Uniting Church said.

The food forest is utilises the flame garden situated at the Tecoma Uniting Church and has grown over the years from a simple community garden to a fully-fledged food forest.

Though, Ros Carter, a volunteer with the THFF, said there were still plans to make it bigger and better.

“We grow all kinds of vegetables, spinach, lettuce and beetroot - any kind of vegies that we can grow really.

“We’re going to work on the understorey; berries and that sort of things ... create a little microclimate as part of the flame garden.“ All the food grown is collected by the community or placed in the food cupboard.

Cr Noel Cliff, Mayor of Yarra Ranges visited the finished flame food forest and commended the group on the gardens incredible transformation.

“I am blown away with it; it’s absolutely wonderful what they are doing here.“ “That’s why the shire was happy to give them a grant because they deserve it, they are doing positive things,“ Cr Cliff said.

Surcharges cut out

By Peter Douglas Your morning cup of coffee could become a bit cheaper in the Yarra Ranges from this month, if you’re paying through Eftpos.

As of 1 September, the Federal Government has effectively stamped out allowing small business owners from applying exorbitant surcharges on Eftpos transactions.

The change makes it illegal for a small business, such as a coffee shop or cafe, to charge beyond what it costs to accept payments through Eftpos and cards issued by banks, which can be between 0.5 and three per cent of the purchase.

Many local customers would be only too aware of the hip-pocket pain, with charges ranging from 50 cents to $2 when paying by credit or debit card.

Mr Coleman said while he supported the move, more needed to be done to tackle high credit-card fees in general.

President of the Yarra Glen Chamber of Commerce, Rod Thomas, said any measure that reduces excessive costs is a welcome change.

Mr Thomas said there were advantages to be gained through embracing point-ofsale technology, as well as measures that encourage a greater range of consumers to consistently use Eftpos.

The ACCC has labelled the move a win for consumers, with billions of transactions affected annually.

They added that if you come across a business you believe is applying exorbitant fees, first raise it with the business, then the commission.

Minna makes a difference

By Derek Schlennstedt Minna Beardsley may only be in Grade 6, but she’s already making a big difference.

The 12-year-old has decided to take part in this year’s Color Run and is raising money for the charity TLC for Kids - which helps sick kids and their families cope with the challenges of everyday life with illness.

To raise money for the charity, Minna has been baking cakes and selling them at her local footy club and is determined to reach her goal and help sick kids and their families.

That goal is to raise $400 or more over the next five months, and

Minna made the decision so she could help those sick children feel better.

“This charity helps sick kids and their families when they are at hospital, by making distraction boxes, or helps in any way they need help to feel safe and OK,” she said.

Distraction boxes are designed

by TLC for Kids to give nurses and healthcare professionals the perfect tools to guide young children through painful examinations and procedures.

The box is placed in medical rooms and contains items that engage the attention of the child, complement the procedure, comply with hospital infection control protocols, and divert attention away

from the procedure.

This year’s Color Run has put a spotlight on individuals striving to make their dreams a reality, and Minna had quickly proven herself as one of the greats said Bronte Bryant, community engagement manager for The Color Run Australia, “We are incredibly happy to hear of Minna's efforts to raise much-needed funds for TLC for Kids, and congratulate her on her achievements,” she said.

Fiercely fighting the fruit fly The Victorian Government has announced its appointment of a fruit fly regional co-ordinator in the Yarra Valley to help protect horticultural production and keep the area fruit fly free.

While many methods are used to control fruit fly, the critical factor is people working together.

In the current action plan, the role of the regional co-ordinator is crucial for ensuring industry, community and government co-operate to effectively manage fruit fly.

Bronwyn Koll has been employed

by Agribusiness Yarra Valley to work directly with the fruit fly regional governance group, which includes representation from major horticultural producers, local and state government, and community members from the area.

Bronwyn’s two-year appointment is part of the $6.7 million Managing Fruit Fly - Regional Grants Program to pro-

vide a co-ordinated and collaborative approach to fruit fly management across the Greater Sunraysia, the Yarra Valley and the Goulburn Murray Valley.

Bronwyn’s family has been growing fruit in the Yarra Valley for four generation, so she understands the local industry and is passionate about protecting it for future generations.

“My top priority is to work with Yarra Valley fruit and vegetable industries, council and the local community to keep the Yarra Valley free from Queensland fruit fly,” she said.

“Our fresh produce industries and amazing edible home gardens in the Yarra Valley are very valuable assets and worth protecting.”

Based in Wandin, Bronwyn will be responsible for co-ordinating the implementation of the Yarra Valley Fruit Fly Regional Action Plan that was developed collaboratively by industry, government

and community in the area.

Some of the tasks include working with the Yarra Valley horticultural community to reduce the risk of fruit fly entering the Yarra Valley, establishing a fruit fly trapping program as an early warning system to prevent fruit fly and engaging with the local community to build capacity to identify Queensland fruit fly.

“Building awareness within the Yarra Valley community is an integral part of the state-wide approach to controlling the population and movement of Queensland fruit fly, and reducing the devastation it causes.”

“I look forward to also working with the Goulburn Murray Valley and Sunraysia regional co-ordinators. Together, we play a significant role in protecting our fresh produce industries and our home gardens in Victoria.”

Following a Facebook post on Eyewatch-Yarra Ranges, Olinda police received two phone calls identifying a suspect.

Overnight on 25 February a female broke into three cars along Warwick Farm Road and after stealing a credit card proceeded to spend $824 at a number of convenience stores.

Police were able to gain footage of her, and to help identify her released the images to the public on the Eye watch Facebook page.

Leading Senior Constable at Olinda police Geoff Long said they received two phone calls shortly after that identified the 30-year-old female from Dandenong.

She was arrested on the 30 August and remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court the following day for 11 charges of theft from motor car, obtaining property by deception, obtaining financial advantage and handling stolen goods.

She pleaded guilty and received a 12-month community corrections order without conviction.

On Saturday, 7 October, I am inviting the community to a free Mayor’s Big Day Out event at Burrinja Cultural Centre in Upwey.

From 10am-3pm, there will be art, activities, entertainment and

a community expo, showcasing the best of the Yarra Ranges and giving residents a chance to learn more about the area.

The gallery will be open with artwork on display, performances will be held in the main theatre, and everything at the event will be accessible, enjoyable and interactive for people of all ages and abilities.

Children will be well catered for, with a magician, children’s workshops and drumming activities available on the day, while adults can visit the community

expo to learn more about community groups that call the Yarra Ranges home.

The Yarra Ranges will be on show throughout the day, with various teams from council present to explain their roles and what they do to make the community a better place to live, work and play in.

Food will be available, with the Upwey CFA running a community sausage sizzle for a gold coin donation.

Frontline workers at Angliss Hospital will be safer at work with the rollout of behaviour assessment rooms in its emergency departments.

As part of the Victorian Government’s $40 million plan to prevent violence and aggression towards the health workforce, the initiative forms part of the government’s campaign against occupational violence.

An estimated 95 per cent of healthcare workers have experienced physical or verbal attacks while doing their

jobs.

Behavioural assessment rooms are separate areas, purpose-built for staff to better assess and manage patients who present to emergency departments exhibiting behaviours of concern.

Monbulk MP James Merlino said all healthcare workers deserved to feel safe at work.

“We will continue to roll out initiatives to promote the safety and well-being of our health workers and paramedics - those who take such great care of our community,” Mr Merlino said.

Making a real difference

By Peter Douglas Minister for Women Michaelia Cash says an integrated, ‘wraparound’ service aimed at supporting victims of family violence is making a significant difference throughout the Yarra Ranges.

As part of her visit to the Eastern Community Legal Centre in Healesville on Friday 8 September, Ms Cash, Casey MP Tony Smith and Evelyn candidate Bridget Vallence met with much of the team behind the SAGE initiative, which seeks to overcome barriers to services for women experiencing family violence.

The model - an acronym for Support Advice Guidance Empowerment - was implemented just over two years ago and is a key component to the Turnbull Government’s multi-million dollar Women’s Safety Package.

Ms Cash said it particularly helped those who were at risk of slipping through the cracks.

“So many will pull out because (they say) ‘It’s a bad experience in court, I can’t go back’,” the Western Australia-based minister said.

“But when you have a wraparound service and an advocate who is there to support you, it’s a very different outcome.

“Because of this integrated service (and) because of the support of the wraparound services they are given, they will actually continue with the process.”

Ms Cash said not only was she delighted to visit the centre, “but more than that, to hear the positive feedback on SAGE as part of the Women’s Safety Package”.

“The legal system is really hard for lots of people, but particularly for women going through family violence situations,” he said.

“In some cases, it might be a good outcome legally, but might be really traumatic, so women going through that need a lot of support.

“I’m really pleased to show the minister what we’re doing on the ground, both with our SAGE team and also our other work here in the Yarra Ranges.”

Mr Smith said the recently opened outreach centre at the Monbulk Living and Learning Centre had received incredible support from the community and was providing an important service.

Though the meeting’s upbeat tone was a far cry from only two years ago, when the centre was under threat of closure.

Millions of dollars of government funding was in doubt, with the centre’s future in jeopardy.

But, along with the support of Yarra Ranges Council, Mr Smith and fellow Liberal MP Jason Wood led the charge to secure funding, ending months of

The centre operates from Healesville, with outreach centres at Yarra Junction and Monbulk, with many of its clients often escaping family violence situations while trying to navigate the legal system.

Mr Smith said it was fantastic Ms Cash could interact directly with those who are making a significant difference at the coalface.

“I’m really pleased I’ve been able to bring the minister back here, so she can see first-hand the great work they’re doing,” Mr Smith said.

Letters Uphold the right In relation to Casey MP Tony Smith’s opinion piece ‘Delivering on election promises’, (Mail, 15 August), may I ask Mr Smith why he believes this postal vote on marriage equality is ‘the right thing to do’?

In my view, through his column he has stated why it is not ‘the right thing to do’, because due to this postal vote there will be more vile judgments made, and voiced, by religious leaders who are supposed to teach love.

With teen suicide six times higher in the LGBTI community than the heterosexual community, we do not need to be told that we are ‘vile sinners, no better than Hitler’.

Where is the Federal Government’s sense of responsibility for the well-being of this most vulnerable section of society?

We know that parliament can change the wording of the marriage law to include all couples without wasting over $100 million to find out what we all already know - that the great majority of Australians (including Christians) are for marriage equality.

You say that Australian’s are fundamentally decent.

I agree, that is why we were among the first nations to allow women to vote; however, every major English speaking democracy apart from Australia has marriage equality.

What has happened?

Does this Federal Government practice ‘fundamental decency’?

Not only is this postal vote unnecessary, it is criminal in my view.

Not so safe In relation to the article ‘Road barriers plea’ (Mail, 29 August), can I first say that I am not against safety on the roads, but I think this crazy notion of putting barriers, either 'Armco’ style or wire, on every road bend is getting way out of hand.

People live in, or move to, areas such as Cockatoo and Emerald for the visual amenity, which doesn’t just include their backyards.

Surely people have some responsibility for their own well-being, which includes on the road, and no amount of 'nanny state’ infrastructure is going to prevent unfortunate accidents, such as the one referenced in that article.

People only have to drive the highway out of Yea towards Mansfield to see the potential end result of trying to protect drivers from themselves.

It’s interesting how so often VicRoads drop speed limits when they introduce these barriers, too, when surely if the road is safer, the speed limit could remain the same, or even be increased in some cases.

By Peter Douglas You know spring has truly sprung when the Tesselaar Tulip Festival is in full bloom and bursting with a kaleidoscope of colour.

Although the star of the show is the more than 900,000 flowering tulips, showcasing 130 different varieties, there is so much more to see.

Visitors can discover plenty of themed children’s events, live entertainment, market stalls; and delicious local food, beer and wine.

Is it last hoot for the owls?

By Peter Douglas Yarra Ranges Council has publicly defended its consultation and engagement strategy in relation to the development of the Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve Master Plan, which is set for a vote at council’s 12 September meeting at Montrose.

After suggestions the plan, which will act as a guidance tool for proposed works at the site, could sound the death knell for a local Powerful Owl population, council issued a detailed media response, maintaining it has attempted to achieve a balance between protecting local wildlife and providing a benefit for the entire community.

Long-time resident and Powerful Owl watcher, Clare Worsnop, has expressed to the ‘Mail’ her fears the local population may disappear in the next five to 10 years, due to human activity and if the works proceed, which includes plans to resurface the lower reserve and drain a floodplain.

Ms Worsnop said the local Powerful Owl population was already under significant stress.

Cr Stevenson said recommendations in the report included investing in a study measuring the reproductive success of the owls compared to other published studies and limiting light spill into the forested area if replacement lighting goes ahead.

He said the report also recommended that records from future birdmonitoring be submitted to a publicly accessible database such as BirdLife Australia.

In addition, the media response highlighted some of the community engagement projects undertaken during the master plan’s development, noting: "Council has undertaken significant community engagement including a survey in early 2016, which helped shaped the draft Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve Master Plan.

"More than 200 submissions on the draft master plan collected during community consultation from December 2016 to February 2017 showed: 88 per cent of respondents said the plan struck the right balance between recreational and environmental needs and issues; 90 per cent of respondents said initiatives would improve walking, cycling and car access to the reserve; 89 per cent said the plan adequately provided for long-term recreational needs of the Mount Evelyn community.

"A revised and final master plan has been developed based on this community engagement.

"This will be presented at the 12 September council meeting at Montrose Town Centre."

By Peter Douglas Eastern Ranges has dominated the TAC Cup Team of the Year for 2017, with five footballers from its Under 18s team last week named in the squad.

The offering was the most of any club in the competition, with Geelong Falcons the nearest club with four representatives.

Heading the list were Yarra Ranges players and highly touted AFL draft hopefuls Joel Garner (Wandin), Jaidyn Stephenson (Ferntree Gully) and Sam Hayes (Ferntree Gully).

Garner was named in a back pocket, with Stephenson on a half-forward flank and Sam Hayes as the number one ruckman.

Likely top 10 draftee Adam Cerra (Ring-

wood) and Dylan Moore (Heathmont) were the other Eastern Ranges players to make the team.

The TAC Cup Team of the Year was announced on the count of the Morrish Medal, one of the competition’s highest individual honours.

In the final leaderboard, top draft prospect Sam Hayes was the only Eastern Ranges’ player in the top 10 for the medal.

The emerging ruckman finished in fifth spot with 14 votes, behind leader and Oakleigh Charger Jack Higgins on 22 votes.

All of Hayes, Garner and Stephenson were recently invited for this year’s crucial AFL Draft Combine in Melbourne.

The trio will be among 83 players from Australia taking part in the event at Etihad Stadium from 3-6 October.

The combine allows AFL clubs to gain a better look at the players’ physical and mental attributes.

The trio have all been rated as strong chances of being drafted, with some draftwatchers predicting Stephenson and Hayes could go in the top 10, with Garner predicted as a late first-round or early second-round chance.

The Eastern Ranges were due to clash against cross-town rival Dandenong Stingrays in an elimination final at Victoria Park, after the Ranges finished the home and away season in sixth position.

Yarra District Manager, Nigel Brennan, reminded the community that once again it will be legal to collect firewood in designated areas on public land until Thursday 30 November.

But Mr Brennan says it’s best to check before you collect.

“Some designated firewood collection areas may not open at the beginning of the spring 2017 firewood season for various reasons, including supply or accessibility due to wet conditions,” he said.

Firewood collection is only permitted on public land during designated times of the year.

Also, it is illegal to sell firewood collected on public land without an appropriate permit or licence, or to take more than the allowed amount.

“You may collect up to two cubic metres of firewood per person, per day, and up to 16 cubic metres per household per year,” Mr Brennan said.

By Derek Schlennstedt NEW traffic lights will replace the roundabout at Mount Dandenong Tourist Road and Montrose Road to ease the flow of traffic.

According to VicRoads, 1900 vehicles an hour use Canterbury Road in peak afternoon times, with most heading towards Mount Dandenong and the Yarra Valley.

The new intersection will have traffic lights and will also comprise three lanes heading outbound, two lanes turning right from Canterbury road onto Mount Dandenong Tourist road, as well as left-turn slip lanes.

VicRoads is currently in the design phase of this project and said in their information update on the project that ‘traffic volumes on Canterbury Road are so great that a roundabout is no longer an appropriate way to manage the intersection’.

Art proves a growing love

By Derek Schlennstedt A dedicated group of Burrinja volunteers, The Hills Food Frontier (THFF) and garden enthusiasts led by Kate Schumann have developed a sensory garden full of colours, smells, textures and tastes which will open on 22 September.

The garden has been a year in the making and the artists were inspired in 2016 to create it.

Every week a special cohort of creatives meet at Burrinja for the Burrinja Arties art therapy group to look at what else they can add to the garden.

Kate Schumann, instigator of the garden is an avid local gardener whose green thumb glows with her ability to share her joy of gardening.

A long-time supporter of the Burrinja Arties Group, Kate had been researching the positive impacts of gardening on health and well-being, and noticed the sensory garden phenomenon in early 2016.

“Being in a garden gives me a great sense of peace and connection.

“I just couldn’t imagine not having the grounded feeling I get from being among plants.”

“The Arties is a lovely group which this year has been making art, for them-selves and for the garden, with the theme of Mother Earth.

“I love that through the garden they are getting that nourishing connection with nature and love that their artwork in the garden is finding con-

nections with the wider Burrinja community," Kate said.

With the support of numerous working bees, plant donations, care from volunteers as well as community grants from Yarra Ranges Council and Burrinja, the Arties' sensory garden is now budding with the promise of a full summer bloom.

The sensory garden has become the central focus of the Arties' creative development and has them making art from, with, and in the garden.

These creative contributions to the sensory experience are evolving with clay tiles, painted trellises and mobiles making up just some of the garden design.

As the seasons change, visitors to the sensory garden are invited to participate in different creative projects including a large circular weaving wheel, a ‘framed in the garden’ portrait project and a stone fairy house.

“For the Burrinja Arties participants, who live in challenging circumstances, the garden offers a sense of belonging and place at Burrinja,” Arties co-ordinator Lynette Forrest, Master of Creative Arts Therapy, said.

“As we harvest tomatoes, passionfruit and herbs, and pass them around the art table, the Arties are learning to taste, trust and experience variety and sensations through the seasons of the garden.”

Members of the public are invited to come to the launch of the garden on 22 September from 10am-12noon.

Creativity set to bloom

By Derek Schlennstedt Budding creatives at Yarra Hills Secondary College are enjoying the opportunity to display their work alongside practising artists from across Australia.

The community can view and buy artworks for sale at The Yarra Hills Community Art Show from Friday 15 to 17 September at the school’s Mount Evelyn campus.

Students can also enter artworks created independently

outside of school hours in the artist section of the show.

Some have received major awards and been commissioned to create further works.

Visual Arts and Technology Co-ordinator Katya Barnes said the art show often launched students into a career within the arts industry.

“This festival helps show the students how to become an artist within the community,” Ms Barnes said.

“We’ve had kids sell their work and they have had work commissioned.”

Three school students had their work displayed at Linden Gate Gallery at Yarra Glen earlier this year.

Everyone is invited to attend for a gold coin donation to the Lilydale Rotary Club.

Yarra Hills Community Art Show will run from 15-17 September at Yarra Hills Secondary College.

Open to the the people, with plants A passionate Montrose plant collector is opening up their native garden, Warooka, on the weekend of 23 and 24 September.

Adjoining the Dandenong Ranges National Park, the garden is nestled amid eucalypts, with the owner taming a steep site with native plants that spill over dry stone walls and winding plants.

The property is just under one acre and was purchased in 1988.

About 15 years ago, landscape designer Paul Thompson developed a design with a winding path and steps to make the steep front garden more accessible from the driveway.

acting vastly against type, nailing the Carolina accent as Joe Bang, a wry incarcerated explosives expert.

The dialogue crackles with down-to-earth wit, with many laugh-out-loud moments.

The film derives some of its humour from its small-town redneck setting, but never in a condescending fashion; even the stereotypical yokel supporting characters have added dimensions of confidence and craftiness.

Drawn in by such engaging character interplay, it’s gratifying to watch the brothers’ plan steadily come together, and Soderbergh generates both laughs and strong suspense from their risky heist.

Complex yet accessible, funny and touching, Logan Lucky is one of the best and most unique heist films in a long time.

Healesville hits hard early

Wandin got the early lead in the first quarter, kicking 4.4 to 2.4, but that was the only time they led. Healesville piled on 9.2 to a single goal in the second term and the lead was now in Healesville’s favour by 38 points at half-time. Healesville slammed on another 9.3 to two behinds in the third quarter and it was well and truly game over. Wandin outscored Healesville in the last, kicking 5.3 to four goals but the damage was done and it was all over for Wandin.

Olinda Ferny Creek got the early break, kicking 5.1 to 3.3 in the first term and had a lead of 10 points. Woori Yallock bounced back in the second quarter with 4.3 to 2.1 and they snatched the lead at half-time by four points. Woori Yallock had most of the play in the third term and held Olinda to 1.1, but managed 4.3 themselves and their lead was now 24 points. It was a bit of a goal feast in the last but Woori Yallock maintained control with 5.2 to Olinda’s 4.4.

The game tightened up even more in the third quarter with Wandin only managing four behinds to Mount Evelyn’s 1.1 and the margin was four points to Wandin. The last quarter was another low scoring 20 min-

utes with one goal apiece being kicked but Wandin snuck home by just three points.

They were impressive in the second quarter kicking 4.1 to just two behinds and their lead had blown out to 29 points. Olinda held Healesville goalless in the third term but kicked two goals and their lead was now 41 points.

They really opened it up in the last kicking five goals to 1.3 and look forward to the break.

Rangers take lion’s share Monbulk Rangers Soccer Club captured the lion’s share of medals at the Victorian Churches Football Association’s junior awards night on the weekend, with the MRSC Scorpions winning the Under 16s Premiership and the Scorpions’ Max Lamers taking home the award for best and fairest player.

MRSC Dragons were well clear of the pack as VCFA Under 11s Premiers, scoring a remarkable 161 goals for the season and conceding just 3.

Runners-up were the MRSC Wizards.

Monbulk Rangers Jaguars were Under 15s runners-up and the Monbulk Rangers Rebels were Under 13s runners-up.

Club president and VCFA junior board member, Lisa Doolan, welcomed news the VCFA will introduce a small-sided junior girls competition in 2018.

Standout performances came from Georgia Laven, finishing third in the Under 16 Women 5000m, doing enough to retain her overall XCR Champion title from 2016.

Angus Norman was the other place-getter with a breakthrough performance to finish third in Under 14 Men 5000m.

“Council’s school crossings team and traffic engineers have worked closely with St Joseph’s College to introduce safe traffic movement systems for students and parents.

After a recent series of escalating incidents in Ferntree Gully, Knox Council has issued a warning to drivers to respect the road rules in the vicinity of school crossings.

Cr Jake Keogh said council was concerned about the safety of students and its supervisors at the Glenfern and Brenock Park Drive school crossings.

“A recent near-miss at the Glenfern Road school crossing has put the issue of the safety of students and our school crossing supervisors firmly on the agenda,” Cr Keogh said.

“This is serious - we haven’t had a tragedy on our hands yet - however, there are real concerns that unless people start heeding road rules around school crossings, then the unthinkable might just happen.

“The Glenfern Road crossing is very busy, with a high volume of traffic during peak times, and it only takes one instance of reckless driving to endanger the safety of students and our supervisors.

“School crossings exist for a reason and we need people to stop and think through the consequences of their actions - for the sake of 30 seconds you could ruin yours and someone else’s life.”

Council has conducted a safety audit at the Glenfern Road and Brenock Park Drive crossings, with a view to implementing potential measures to improve safety at both locations.

This includes advocacy to VicRoads for the potential installation of pedestrian traffic signals at both crossings.

Cr Keogh said the Brenock Park Drive crossing is the busiest school crossing in Knox, with about 300400 students using the crossing during peak times (before and after school).

“While the most recent and serious incident occurred at the Glenfern Road crossing, Brenock Park Drive has the highest number of drive-throughs of any crossing in Knox - about two per shift,” he said.

“Brenock Park Drive is a wide road, with one lane in each direction, however, when faced with turning vehicles, as often occurs, many drivers are creating an extra lane in an attempt to get past.

“This is not just illegal behaviour
