Keysborough students brought a dramatic Disney classic to life on stage.

More than 100 Haileybury students in Years 5 to 8 presented The Lion King Junior at the school’s Berthon Hall on Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7 September.

By Casey Neill The State Planning Minister is poised to personally intervene to block a Bangholme produce market.

In June, Greater Dandenong Council approved the DandyFresh application to develop green wedge-zoned land in Harwood Road and bring

200 jobs to the region. Opponents have appealed against the decision to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), claiming the 5000 square metre sterilisation facility and 8700 square metre warehouse were not appropriate for the site.

In “an embarrassment for Greater Dandenong Council”, Planning Minister Richard Wynne has asked the Department of Environment, Land,

Water and Planning to provide him with advice on the application. The use and development proposed for the site are not prohibited in the green wedge but there are questions about the appropriateness of its scale and form in the area.

The proposal also sits within a buffer to Melbourne Water’s Eastern Treatment Plant, which is in place to minimise the public’s exposure to

odour. A spokesman for Mr Wynne said the State Government had pledged to protect Melbourne’s green wedges and that wasn’t about to change.

“This proposal clearly does not meet community expectations for developments in the green wedge, and the minister is considering whether he needs to intervene,” the spokesman said.

Light blasters set to put pest seagulls under fire A $60,000 light system could send seagulls packing from Dandenong’s CBD. Greater Dandenong Council will install UV exclusion systems on top of the Dandenong Civic Centre, the Drum Theatre and the Thomas and Walker street multi-deck car parks.

City planning, design and amenity director Jody Bosman said Tullamarine Airport and the new Epping Fruit Market had successfully used the same solar-operated systems.

“These systems are designed to emit intense light that birds interpret in the same way humans visualise fire,” he said.

“The birds don’t like it and therefore stay away.

This is a permanent and long-term solution to the seagull problem.”

Mr Bosman said the measure would cost between $45,000 and $60,000.

He said the council would remove any nests found on council buildings at the end of the current breeding season and would thoroughly clean those areas.

Mayor Jim Memeti said access to food and

breeding sites appeared to be the main reason for the recent increase in seagull numbers.

He said the council was working with business owners in the central activity district to educate them about practical ways they could help reduce the problem.

“We need to ensure that any potential food sources, including waste, are removed,” Cr Memeti said.

“Council is also asking business owners to check their properties to ensure they limit any access to potential breeding areas in roof spaces and eaves.”

Cr Memeti said everyone had a role to play in reducing the number of seagulls in central Dandenong.

“I implore all members of the public to stop feeding birds in public places,” he said.

“It is not good for their health and it is not good for the local amenity.”

He said council officers would be issuing formal notices to people who fed birds, left food waste uncovered or food bins overflowing.

Residents blocked from parking in their own street

By Casey Neill Dandenong residents are calling for parking permits to bypass bans, saying they’re fed up with fines.

But Greater Dandenong Council said the parking restrictions were instated in response to requests from residents.

Canberra Avenue’s Emily Carydias is leading a petition on the issue.

She told the Journal she couldn’t park in her own street between 11am and 3pm on weekdays.

“We cop a parking fine. We’re residents, we’re not just visitors,” she said.

Ms Carydias said the area was newly-developed and filled with townhouses.

She shares her home with two other adults, and five or six people live next door.

“They’ve copped about four fines,” she said.

“In Monash, they have parking permits for people living in the area.”

Ms Carydias said the issue also stretched to neighbouring Dalgety Street.

“It’s become more of a revenue-raising thing,” she said.

Greater Dandenong Council’s acting engineering services director Craig Cinquegrana said the council did not currently issue residential parking permits.

“Unlike inner-city suburbs, where property sizes are generally smaller, the vast majority of residential properties in Greater Dandenong have sufficient space to cater for private residential parking on-site,” he said.

“Council does not reserve on-street parking for exclusive use by local residents.

“Additionally, allowing residents to be exempt from the restrictions would defeat the purpose of why the restrictions were introduced.”

Defenders of the South East Green Wedge secretary Barry Ross said the group had lodged an appeal with VCAT and a hearing had tentatively been set for early February.

“We believe there is a compelling case for the minister to call in this outrageous proposal and hoping that he will intervene and refuse the application,” he said.

Mr Ross said the group opposed the proposal because it would not conform with or support the purpose of the green wedge zone.

Green wedge areas are known as the lungs of Melbourne.

Mr Ross said the market was an intense development that should be classified as an industrial use and located in an industrial zone.

He said it would be contrary to the green wedge protection measures in the state and local planning policies and would have a substantial adverse impact on the amenity of the surrounding rural area.

Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan said Mr Wynne’s involvement vindicated the stand he and Cr Maria Sampey took against the proposal.

“It also reinforces my criticism of our planning department for recommending its approval.

This is an embarrassment for Greater Dandenong Council,” he said.

DandyFresh CEO Rod Kerley said the development was appropriate in the green wedge and he was “happy to go to VCAT”.

Intrapac Property managing director David Payes said Intrapac was a joint venture partner with some investors on the land and also an investor in DandyFresh.

Hazell has distinctive tattoos of the word ‘family’ on his right cheek and ‘believe’ on the left side of his forehead.

He is described as 167cm tall with a thin build, blue eyes and blonde hair.

50 years ago 12 September 1967 It’s none of our business but ... .

There is a history to one flagpole in the Scout Jamboree Reserve in Churchill Park.

It was reported by Ron Smith when thanks for the pole were received at the RSL monthly meeting.

Ron said that when Dandenong RSL bowlers won two pennants in the 1966 season, three flagpoles were intended so there was a spare.

“And I don’t think we could have found a better place for it,” Ron said.

8 September 1997 PM chooses local women Leading Dandenong businesswomen and world-renowned former opera singer Ms Stella Axarlis has been named as a member of the constitutional convention.

The convention, which will develop a plebiscite or referendum on Australia becoming a republic, is expected to be held in the first half of next year.

The Prime Minister Mr Howard said the 36 appointments to the 152 delegate body represent a broad cross section of society.

He said: “They can reflect the Federal Government’s commitment to ensure that women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, young Australians, and local government are represented at the convention.”

The Journal spoke to Ms Axarlis, 58, who she said she was open-mined about the republican-monarchy discussions.

It covers a wide area and has an equally wide age group in its staunch supporters from school children to retirees.

Besides his concern about the desexing of cats and dogs, Mr Fielder also scotched rumours of AAPS’s imminent demise.

“They are just that ... .rumours,” he said.

He acknowledged the donations of money, time and equipment by individuals, school groups and the corporate sector.

that they can be supported to become the best possible version of ‘them’. There are many practices and concepts that are commonplace, even mandatory, within special education that should, I believe, be in place in the mainstream system also.

All students within the special education system have an individual learning plan - this document clearly and explicitly states the student’s goals for their education for that period, be it 12, six or three months.

This document is created via input from all

the key figures in the student’s life. Wouldn’t it be wonderful, as a parent, to be able to highlight to your child’s school the priorities and goals that you have for your child?

Learning that occurs in special education settings is largely hands-on and practical.

Life skills are addressed, in conjunction with the mandated curriculum.

How often is it said that our students in mainstream settings would benefit from learning about taxes, or banking, or household chores?

Special education settings have the ability to be able to address this learning in a real and practical manner.

Specialist settings have the ability to create opportunities for students to engage with authentic tasks - tasks that hold a purpose and meaning for our students.

It is well-researched and documented that tasks of this nature are more engaging for all students, leading to higher performance and

achievement rates. Yet many mainstream environments still function with students sitting in rows, behind either text books or laptops, working through questions in silence.

The staff working in these environments are not to blame - they do an amazing job in some very difficult circumstances.

The need for greater support to allow all students to support true student growth must start at the top.

Increased funding for all schools, both mainstream and specialist, would allow for smaller class sizes, increased funding and increased opportunity for all students to experience s uccess.

And just perhaps the mainstream system could, one day, adopt some principles and practices from their special education counterparts and produce a system that is truly aimed at supporting all students and promoting positive outcomes for all.

Recent inflammatory remarks made by a prominent federal politician have shone the spotlight on special education, but not necessarily in a positive manner.

The conversation that has occurred as a result of these comments has been both ignorant and illinformed.

The mainstream education system, as it exists currently, is a system that is designed to benefit the ‘few’ rather than the masses.

Research has continued to show that students are more successful in an environment that allows them to engage in practical, collaborative tasks that are interest-based.

The research is conclusive, however the mainstream education system is slow to make changes.

The special education system is truly designed to enable all students to experience success, regardless of their diagnosed disabilities.

Students within this system have a variety of needs and challenges, however the system is such

Disability jobs are under threat

By Casey Neill A Dandenong disability enterprise is reeling after the City of Casey ended its eight-year relationship.

Gateway Industries CEO Alan Warwick said it was “a kick in the guts more than anything” to miss out on the contract to provide mulching, weeding and planting throughout the municipality.

He said the decision would affect two supervisors and eight to 12 employees.

“We’ve had a contract for eight years,” Mr Warwick said.

“We worked with them prior to that through Fulton Hogan (as a subcontractor).

“We’ve never had anything but positive feedback.

“I’m deeply hurt.”

The registered charity that offers employment,

training and support for adults with disabilities in Greater Dandenong and Casey started more than 30 years ago as a Rotary Club of Dandenong initiative.

Mr Warwick said the council told him the decision was based on price but did not provide further explanation.

“Our guys average $4.80 to $6 an hour plus a supervisor,” he said.

Mr Warwick said he was now looking for other outdoor gardening work “to keep these guys employed and having a meaningful life, basically”.

“I understand they’ve got a business to run as well,” he said.

Gateway president Russell Smith said the news had “really hit us hard” and would have a big impact on the budget.

“It’s going to cause us quite a lot of challenge,” he said.

“It’s pretty devastating for us.”

Richardson said Gateway Industries was previously one of a panel of contractors on a fixed term.

“The contract was let in July 2013 for two years with an option of two one-year extensions,” he said.

“The expiry date of the contract was fixed and known for all contractors with the final extension of the contract in 2016.

“Gateway Industries would have received 12 months’ notice that the contract would expire in July 2017.”

Mr Richardson said the tender for the service was publicly advertised on 6 May and closed on 31 May, and the council received 25 submissions.

“Following a rigorous evaluation process against established criteria, including price and quality considerations, the recommendation was for the contract to be awarded to a panel of six providers,” he said.

The council endorsed the decision on 15 August.

“Due to the competitive and transparent process in tendering, previous contractors may miss out on the new contracts,” he said.

“We understand that the process may cause disappointment for the old contractors when they have previously delivered a good service.

“Council would like to acknowledge the work previously undertaken by Gateway Industries.

“The energy and enthusiasm Gateway staff approached their work made them a pleasure to work with.”

Councillor Amanda Stapeldon said she was a long-time supporter of Gateway but was totally removed from the tender process.

She said she was pushing for more council engagement with disability groups.

Gateway Industries has provided street furniture cleaning and litter pick-up services to Greater Dandenong Council for more than 25 years, and garden maintenance to Greenways Retirement Village in Seaford for more than 15 years.

A man was trapped in a trench at Mt Hira College in Keysborough.

Ambulance Victoria was called to the Perry Road Islamic school about 4.15pm on Friday 1 September to reports that the man was trapped in soil from the waist down.

About 35 members of the CFA and MFB specialist trench rescue crews attended the building site in 15 vehicles.

CFA incident controller Loretta Binder from Keysborough Fire Brigade co-ordinated the incident, with the Dandenong brigade’s Adam Small as rescue commander.

“The worker was trapped below the waist by falling soil around 2.5 metres from the top of a narrow trench,” the CFA said.

“As multiple agencies worked together, the area was stabilised to allow Dandenong brigade’s ladder platform to carefully lift the worker clear after more than three hours.”

Ambulance Victoria said paramedics assessed the man about 8pm, once he was freed, and took him to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable

‘We’re not calm’ say residents

By Casey Neill A “traffic calming device” nearly caused a head-on collision in a Noble Park North street, says one local.

But Greater Dandenong Council said the Titcher Road treatments had reduced rat-running and cut driver speeds.

Kim Cotter’s parents have lived in the road since the early 1960s.

“It doesn’t slow anyone down because it’s that wide you don’t have to turn your wheels to get through it,” she said.

“I’ve nearly had a head-on collision at night in it.”

Ms Cotter said the installation - essentially an extension of the nature strip - narrowed the road.

“It’s effectively one lane down the centre,” she said.

“If you’re in the middle of it and someone flies in you don’t have much room to move.”

She said there’d been a push for speed humps for years.

“For years residents have been told there’s nothing to warrant speed humps or traffic calming measures in Titcher Road,” she said.

“Now all of a sudden there is.

“They just sort of make it up as they go along.”

She said the council told her parents that all residents were informed, but her parents received no notification.

“None of the neighbours I spoke to had received any communication either,” she said.

“I want them to pull it out.”

Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan told the Monday 28 August council meeting that residents had said the traffic calming devices were “ineffective and at night are actually dangerous due to them being hard to see”.

City planning, design and amenity director Jody Bosman said data showed a decrease in traffic speeds and volumes passing through the section of Titcher Road that contained the treatment.

He said the difference in the morning and afternoon peak periods was noticeable, “indicating that the amount of rat-running through Titcher Road has likely decreased”.

“The traffic speeds further west on Titcher Road are still relatively high, particularly heading downhill towards Elonera Road.

“Officers will continue to monitor this location.”

Mr Bosman said the council had not identified “any significant safety issues caused by the treatments” and that lighting and white paint had been used to make them stand out.

The Monash Freeway upgrade has hit a major milestone but there’s more disruption ahead.

The final beams were lifted into place to widen bridges along the thoroughfare, over Dandenong Creek.

Eight bridges have been widened using 73 concrete beams that weigh up to 82 tonnes each.

Over the coming weeks, motorists will also experience some delays as concrete is poured at the bridges over Dandenong Creek and Eumemmerring Creek.

During this time, the speed will be reduced to 40 kilometres an hour for 48 hours at each bridge to allow the concrete to set with minimal vibration.

The Monash Freeway is being widened by an extra lane in each direction between EastLink and Clyde Road to increase capacity. It’s due to be completed next year.

Peddler Tuck Shop let its Facebook followers know that a “major incident” occurred in the Douglas Street store on Friday 1 September.

“We are all devastated about the incident that had occurred,” the post said.

“But we will try our best and earliest to rebuild and create a fresh look to Peddler Tuck Shop and hoping to serve you again soon!”

The Journal was unable to reach the Peddler team for further comment.

A suspended learner driver in an unregistered car was on her way home from a court hearing when she ran into police.

Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol intercepted a 26-year-old woman on Heatherton Road, Noble Park, earlier this month.

They allege her car was unregistered, her Victorian Learner’s Permit was suspended, she was not accompanied by a supervising driver and she was not displaying L-plates.

Police said they discovered she was driving home from the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court where she had only half an hour earlier entered into a good behaviour bond for speeding offences.

She is to be charged on summons.

Sri Lankan tourists have Greater Dandenong in their sights, says councillor Tim Dark.

He recently visited the country and told the Monday 28 August Greater Dandenong Council meeting that “there was a lot of discussion around tourism and how the City of Greater Dandenong is placed.

Cr Dark visited Colombo, Kandy and Galle, “some of the biggest, most populous areas where there is a rising population”.

“A population where wealth is starting to grow at a very quick rate and following on from that they are starting to investigate tourism avenues,” he said.

“They are starting to look at branching out and there are some very exciting things which I know that myself and Mayor Jim Memeti have been doing a lot of work with.”

Christian link to female suppression I read with interest the heading in the Age of ‘Rites, V. Rights’ which questioned the Catholic Church’s stand on moral values following the ‘child abuse scandals’, although this behaviour was present in other institutions.

However I question the value of any of the books of mythology, whether they be Hebrew, Christian or Muslim, because their whole foundations are based on areas that were originally Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt.

Recently it was announced that the Australian aborigine has been in evidence for thousands and thousands of years, long before writing, yet is not mentioned in any of the mythology records that we follow. Why? This question has been a puzzle especially after the writing of the Nicene Creed which was first arranged in the city of Nicene in 325AD and then was amended at the First Council of Constantinople in 381AD. We know that a lot of material was available dealing with the first century AD but was disallowed under the term that would come up time and time again - heresy.

However, I ask how much of the accepted versions of that period of history had a little ‘self-interest’ for those that produced it, especially the property and exemption from taxes perks that the religious got and still do.

It is also interesting to note that it was at this time that women, who had been held in

high regard, especially in ancient Egypt, began to lose the respect and recognition.

One has to look at the murder, either ordered or approved by the Christian bishop of Alexandria Cyril in 412AD, of the female philosopher Hypatio who was torn to pieces by zealots led by Peter the Lector.

Her teaching was not accepted by this new mythology and it is interesting to note it was at this stage that the word ‘witch’ appeared.

According to this new mythology, the teaching of Hypatio ran against the teaching of Christianity - it was also considered that the new religion was given to men.

These views have led to women in all these religions being classified as second class citizens.

We question one religion of morals. Maybe a look see at them all will really find the truth.

Multitude of 'marriage' If a postal plebiscite on marriage were to result in legalised ‘same-sex marriage’ (SSM), it would have deeper far-reaching consequences for our society than simply granting legal status to SSM. The Sex Discrimination Act 1984, amended in 2013, protects the chosen gender identity and sexual orientation of everyone.

The Tumblr blogging site shows a list of at least 112 separate ‘gender identities’ and 70 ‘sexual orientations’.

Since all these are now protected in law, 24 million people in Australia are free to choose their own gender and sexual identity.

Therefore, this scenario is not simply about SSM but, in effect, ‘transgender marriage’ because if the number of people “marrying” under legalised SSM were multiplied by 112, our society could very likely end up with potentially millions of different types of ‘marriage’. Is this the way we are content to go?

The reasonable conclusion seems that a ‘no’ vote makes far more sense.

Kitchen garden feeds migrants Greater Dandenong migrant mums are gathering in Government House to build confidence and community connection.

Women from three Greater Dandenong community hubs have been taking part in the eightweek Government House Peace and Prosperity Garden Kitchen Garden Program since 24 July.

Victorian Governor Linda Dessau and her husband Anthony Howard personally funded the project and worked with Community Hubs Australia to open Government House to migrant women.

Women from the hubs at St Anthony’s Catholic, Springvale Rise and Dandenong West primary schools meet each Monday and hop on a bus to Government House.

The program aims to develop a sense of belong-

ing; help participants build community connections, grow confidence and learn skills; and foster cross-cultural connections and understanding.

St Anthony’s hub co-leaders Debbie Vivian and Lisa Occhietti said the women were thoroughly enjoying the program.

“Each week they are excited by the range of activities including a tour of the state apartments, Government House Gardens and lunch with the governor and Mr Howard,” they said.

“The day is always filled with laughter and fun.”

St Anthony’s Community Hub participant Danijela Buth said: “I feel proud to be Australian.”

Another woman from the St Anthony’s hub, Sokhom Mao, said she was very lucky.

“I really appreciate coming to this program,” she said.

The language of health Afghan and Tamil volunteers are spreading lifesaving health messages to their cultural communities.

Enliven Victoria rolled out the red carpet at Dandenong Civic Centre on Thursday 17 August to recognise its latest volunteers.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams presented certificates to recognise the health champions’ graduation from a training program.

Greater Dandenong’s older creatives are showing off their skills through an annual exhibition.

The Dandenong University of the Third Age (U3A) will hold its art and craft show at Menzies Hall in Dandenong North on Monday 18 September from 10am to 4pm.

Members created the works on show at U3A classes over the past year.

The display will include photography, paintings, drawings, knitting and much more.

President Jim Archibald said the event was designed to encourage new members.

The group has been around since 1994 and has about 450 members.

The U3A model has members share their knowledge with fellow members on a voluntary basis.

Activities include computer classes, history studies, cooking and gardening, karaoke and more.

Membership is $45 per year.

The Dandenong U3A meets at the Paddy O’Donoghue Centre in Noble Park.

Invite to pop in to NDIS pop up Free advice about the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will be available every Thursday at Wallara’s pop-up store in Dandenong Plaza.

Wallara planning officer Janine Burns said the free service would help de-mystify the NDIS. “Over the last few years there has been much written about the NDIS, but for many people it is still very confusing: are they eligible? What can they claim? How do they go about accessing funds? .... the list goes on,” Ms Burns said.

“At Wallara we are privileged to have been given prime retail space at Dandenong Plaza to open a pop up shop.

“This space is a place for people with different abilities to develop skills in money handling and retail and has provided an opportunity for Wallara to further extend its reach into the Dandenong community and for the community to learn more about disability in general.

“Dandenong Plaza has provided Wallara with a unique opportunity and we believe we can support the local community by providing a free-ofcharge information service to help educate those members of the community who need more information on the NDIS.” Dandenong Plaza’s centre manager Mark Tannahill said it was “a privilege to have the Wallara pop up shop here at Dandenong Plaza and expose our shoppers to the great work that Wallara do.”

The Oncology Rehabilitation Outpatient program at St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital is a six-week, twice a week program incorporating information sessions, meditation, tai chi, exercise and hydrotherapy, which is tailored to suit individual needs and goals.

As St John of God CEO Lisa Norman explained, the information sessions are interactive and discuss topics to assist in day-to-day life such as healthy food choices when people aren’t feeling their best, tips on managing stress, the benefits of exercise and providing instruction to participants on how to pace themselves to get through the day.

“The meditation session will help you wind down and refocus and the tai chi session is great for balance, posture and breathing,” Mrs Norman said.

“Exercise is an integral part of rehabilitation

and plays an important part in reducing cancer related fatigue and improving quality of life.”

Hydrotherapy is new to oncology rehabilitation, but early research shows it is an effective method of exercise.

“The water is 34 degrees and while the water resistance provides a great workout, we let you float around as part of your ‘cool down’, so it is a very relaxing session,” Mrs Norman said.

“Whilst we encourage everyone to participate, we understand hydrotherapy is not for everyone, so an alternative gym session can be provided.”

Those who want to get started can just ask a specialist or GP for a referral to one of St John of God’s rehabilitation physicians who will complete a medical assessment to enter the program.

• Clutter - Is one major “No-No” when showcasing your home, you should try to clear all the items that do not need to be there, or are taking up space for no reason.

• Clean - Focus on a good thorough clean, inside and outside of your home, as this will make the home feel and look more liveable. For example: Windows inside and out, window ledges, top of the doors/skirting, top of fan blades, gutters and even polishing your appliances really helps.

• Smells - We all don’t like going into places where the aroma does not agree with our sense of smell.

Try to not to cook anything that creates a strong lasting smell on the day or night before. Also as a tip, the exhaust fan filter over your cook top may need a clean, as it could hold some of the smells from previous cooking.

• Repaint - Homes that have outdated or dull coloured walls may need a quick touch up, to refresh the look of the home. A tip is to paint the areas a neutral tone to make the rooms look larger and cleaner.

• Lighting - Lighting is a big “YES” when showcasing your home. Lighting in the home creates a bigger and inviting visual space. So open all window coverings to let in the natural light and turn on all the lights in the home.

• Fix - One of the main things to look for while preparing your home is to fix leaking faucets, loose door knobs, loose shower head and even make sure the front door locks work correctly.

• Staging- staging the entire home, or just partial staging has been proven to play a big part in achieving a premium price. It is best to consult your agent to give you further advice on this, as it’s something that gets tailored to the homes target market and your budget.

• Gardening - work on sprucing up the gardens by cutting the grass, light weeding and landscaping, trimming of the trees and perhaps add few interior plants as well for the extra life inside the home.

• Make the house easily accessible - Nowadays many people work 6 days a week, be prepared and flexible with open for inspection times as you don’t want to miss out on the key buyers, after all the effort you made in presenting the home.

• Choose the right agent for yourself and for your home.

Roads struggle as traffic grows

By Casey Neill The road network is playing catch-up with traffic volumes in growing Keysborough.

At the Monday 28 August Greater Dandenong Council meeting, councillor Matthew Kirwan said people were increasingly expressing concerns about the number of vehicles using Chapel Road.

He said complaints had increased since the new shopping centre and further residential developments had opened.

Cr Kirwan asked that a traffic analysis be considered for funding.

Keysborough South Action Group spokeswoman Nina Kelly told the Journal that Perry Road was even worse.

“The corner of Church Road and Perry Road is terrible,” she said.

“You can have up to six cars banked.”

Ms Kelly said the situation wasn’t causing safety concerns.

“It’s more frustration than anything at the moment,” she said.

But she did urge “a bit more forwardplanning”.

“Residents shouldn’t have to constantly go to council and to VicRoads to try and resolve the matter,” he said.

In response to Cr Kirwan’s question, engineering services director Julie Reid told the meeting that the council was monitoring the area carefully.

“Unlike the surrounding residential estates, the road network has yet to be fully developed and motorists have fewer choices on how to move through the area,” she said.

“As such, there will be periods of congestion on Chapel Road and surrounds, particularly during peak times when motorists may experience some delays.”

Ms Reid said that motorists would have options once the road network was fully developed “which should result in lower demand and congestion on specific roads and greater route choice to move through and around the area”.

“As per previous advice given to council regarding the proposed traffic analysis, council’s traffic engineers believe that the existing traffic analysis is suitable in describing how the area will operate once development has been completed,” she said.

Ms Reid said she would provide councillors with a map detailing proposed future routes for the area.

Naval veterans gathered at Dandenong RSL to reminisce.

HMAS Bataan Veterans of Australia hosted the annual Tribal Luncheon on Tuesday 29 August.

Springvale students are safer in the water thanks to a whole-school swimming program.

Dandenong Oasis hosted an inclusive swimming program with Springvale Rise Primary School during term three to ensure student safety in and around water.

Most of the school’s 550-plus students took part in the eight-day YMCA swimming lesson program and on Thursday 17 August celebrated completing it.

Springvale Rise is one of the most culturally diverse schools in the state with about 83 per cent of students with origins outside Australia and 38 languages spoken.

YMCA Aquatics co-ordinator Melissa Watson said the program was vital to raise the awareness of water safety among young members of the local culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) community.

“Greater Dandenong is the most culturally diverse municipality in Victoria and the second most diverse in Australia, so we place a great emphasis on educating new arrivals on safety in and around water,” she said.

“A lot of those attending the swimming program have had very little experience around water, so the skills they learn are potentially lifesaving.”

Principal Debbie Cottier said it was the first time the whole school had joined the program and the whole school community had embrace it as a high priority.

“A lot of our students have not had the opportunity to learn to swim and we regard this as very important,” she said.

“We’ve received great support from parents and the wider school community who are committed to the swimming program.”

The event recognised the HMAS Arunta and Warramunga as well as Bataan, all Tribal Class destroyers that served in World War II and the Korean War.

Sales give manufacturing edge

By Narelle Coulter When Johnny Depp soars through the air in the hit movie Pirates of the Caribbean the American actor is tethered to a gantry system manufactured in Hallam.

“All the stunt people love our stuff,” Bomac chief engineer Tate McFarlane said.

“They find it easy to set up and use, and it’s versatile, so they can do a lot with it. We have supplied mainly action films like Wolverine and The Matrix.

“I’ll elbow my wife in the middle of a film and say ‘that’s Altrac’.”

Altrac is a light-weight modular aluminium rail system manufactured by Bomac. It works like Lego to build high safety systems and material handling systems.

“It started in 1984 as a brains for hire company, so we did everything and anything,” Mr McFarlane explained.

“Then with a changing economy that was occurring, one-off engineering was cheaper to do overseas, we came up with a standardised product.”

Mr McFarlane’s father Barry, a boiler maker by trade, came up with the idea for the original piece of rail while lying in a hospital bed recovering from a heart attack.

Now the product is making headway overseas in New Zealand, Korea and the US. As the second generation to run the business, Mr McFarlane said he wanted to build on the foundations laid by his parents. To do that, he realised he needed to get smarter about sales and marketing.

“We are a very technical-orientated company.

Engineering knowledge we have. Sales and marketing skills are something we don’t have,” he explained.

“With the way marketing and sales are going, you have to be up front, if you lag behind, you can suddenly drop off the radar with all your customers.

“Modern business is about creating relationships and networks. You have to be able to relate to the customer and create that trust between the two parties.”

Mr McFarlane is one of eight students who are completing Chisholm’s inaugural Creating Future Leaders in Manufacturing Sales program.

Chisholm Industry Educator Michele Tocci said the size of the companies involved in the course varied from small family-owned firms like Bomac to larger firms with 200 plus employees.

Participants include Hilton Manufacturing, Thermofilm, Pluspak and Claas Harvesting.

“The diversity shows you the core issue of technical people developing sales skills is what is important,” Ms Tocci said. “The products they have are fantastic. They just have to learn to speak the language to make that connection, understanding

There is an incredible amount of knowledge, but it was the sales component that needed to be developed. Second to that was the international trade.”

Students attend a monthly industry expert workshop. They also receive regular on-site visits from educators like Ms Tocci to make sure what they are learning is integrated into their individual industries.

“We are looking for participants to be a lot more proactive in their business, and we are already seeing that in a number of ways,” Ms Tocci said.

“If we look at Tate and his role, he has an on campus day, then we come out and visit for three hours after one of the those sessions.

“There is online reading and assessment tasks.

Importantly, anything Tate learns can potentially be implemented in his business.” Mr McFarlane said he had already started using skills learnt in the course in his role at Bomac.

“You don’t just get a certificate at the end that says you have done the course. You actually get tools and use them as you go along.”

He said he found the course relevant and industry-focused.

“Lots of sales courses and marketing courses assume you are selling Coke or some other household name whereas this was aimed at something that in the Australian economy should be considered clean, critical and clever.

“Because it was tailored to manufacturing, I felt it was worth taking on. It’s been pretty positive in that it’s always kept that in mind.”

After completing the sales component of the course, students can go on to complete a certificate four in international sales.

“I do think sales is a critical element to any successful business,” Mr McFarlane said.

“It’s not where my formal training lies. The best step to progressing any company is admitting your weaknesses and then addressing them.

Our club is as friendly as it gets “You couldn’t find a friendlier club."

That’s the assessement of long-serving member of the Combined Probus Club of Sandown, Shirley Constantine.

The club is coming up for its quarter of a century milestone next year, and Shirley has been a member for all but one of those 25 years.

Shirley worked as a research assistant to a professor of Australian history at Monash University, until ill-health forced her to retire.

She saw an advertisement in the local press advertising Probus and joined with a friend.

“When I had to stay away a few months, the thing that got me going back again was that the welfare officer was so good. They kept ringing me up to see if I needed anything. She was so caring I made up my mind I was definitely going back."

Shirley and her friend decided that because they were active in other organisations they would “sit back and do nothing" in an official capacity with Probus.

Before the end of the year the vice-president had asked Shirley to be his VP the next year.

She has been on the committee ever since.

“I’m determined to be on the committee for 25 years," Shirley said.

Sandown broke away from the Noble Park Probus Club, to help alleviate a long waiting list.

Shirley likes the social aspect of Probus and the varied activities and trips.

“We’ve had some great times over the years. It’s an opportunity to get together and have some fun.

“I’d say if you are thinking about doing something in your spare time, try Probus. If you do try it, then try all the activities. Give it a go. Before you know if you are caught up in the swing of it."

The club recently celebrated two very special events - Joan and Norm Carroll’s 70th wedding anniversary and, shortly after, Joan’s 90th birthday.

The Carrolls were married on 21 June, 1947 at All Saints Church in Clayton.

They met when they both worked at Kayser Hosiery. Norm was a mechanic and Joan’s job was to

“How have we stuck together so long?" Joan calls out to Norm.

“He said to keep each other warm," she said, laughing.

“I guess we consider each other’s feelings. We share. We just get along."

The couple joined Probus in September 2003.

“We thought it would be company and we had friends who were in it. We thoroughly enjoy it. We used to go on all the trips and loved all their outings. People are marvellous, very friendly."

SPORT Rejection is part of the process

By Nick Creely Make no mistake about it - Perry Lewis-Smith will never give up on his AFL dream.

The 18-year-old athletic beast is used to rejection but rather than let that rejection become despair he has continually used it as a source of inspired motivation.

After a strong 2016 TAC Cup season with the Sandringham Dragons and the best beep test results out of all the TAC Cup players (15.7), Perry narrowly missed out on being drafted.

‘The Machine’ - as he is nicknamed for obvious reasons - such as winning a string of junior best-and-fairests with his club Parkmore/Springvale Districts - joined the Casey Demons this season in a bid to land in the AFL in 2018 through a strong state league season in the VFL. So impressive was he in the Development League as a niggling small defender with the capacity to rack up the footy that coach Justin Plapp decided to bring the youngest player on the list into the seniors in Round 6 against the then undefeated Port Melbourne.

He said he will never forget the experience of his VFL debut and hopes it will hold him in good stead as he attempts to catch the recruiters’ attention.

“The experience was great. They (Port Melbourne) hadn’t lost yet so it was always going to be a really good game.

“I was thrown into the deep end a little bit, and I was a bit nervous, but as the game went on I got into it,” Perry said.

“It was a lot quicker and the bodies are obviously a bit bigger, but getting involved amongst the AFL players was a great experience for me going forward.”

He went on to play a further three matches,

But it’s in the Development League that Perry

continues to will himself and keep his name popping up in conversations, with his endurance ensuring he has finished the season with a flurry of strong games.

Stingrays recognised among best boys and girls

By Nick Creely A strong contingent of Dandenong Stingrays’ youngsters capped of their impressive individual home-and-away seasons with recognition in the TAC Cup Boys and Girls annual awards last Sunday night.

Haileybury premiership stars Oscar Clavarino and Luke Davies-Uniacke were both named in the TAC Cup’s Team of the Year for outstanding performances in school and Stingray duties throughout the season.

In-form midfielder Hunter Clark - who has relished a chance in the middle after spending the majority of the season off half-back - was also named in the side after a season that has seen him rocket up the AFL draft calculations.

All three are expected to have their names called out in the first 40 come draft night in November.

Other Stingrays such as Riley D’Arcy (third in the competition for goals), Angus Paterson, Mitch Cotter and Bailey Williams were unlucky not to be named in the team after equally strong years.

All four were highly consistent performers while their biggest names were away on representative and school football duties throughout the season, with D’Arcy in particular showing enough to be named in the AFL’s State Combine later this year.

In the night’s most prestigious award, the Morrish Medal - awarded to the competition’s best player of the season - Stingray pair D’Arcy and ruck/forward Tom De Koning both topped the votes for Dandenong with 10, while smoky chance Clark surprisingly polled just the four votes despite seemingly having at least four best afield performances.

Oakleigh Charger Jack Higgins took out the coveted award with 22 votes after a stunning season playing through the midfield and forward line.

Meanwhile, in the TAC Cup Girls awards, Stingray trio Bridie Kennedy, Jordyn Allen and Georgia Gee were awarded for their brilliant seasons with selection in the Team of the Year.

Kennedy also took out the league’s top gong - TAC Cup Girls best-and-fairest- after playing every game and starring in a ruck/defence role for the Stingrays; She shared the award with Calder Cannons’ midfielder Chloe Molloy.

Despite possessing an elite set of playing skills, Perry prides himself on the most important aspects of all and something that has shaped him in his journey so far.

He hopes it will make him stand out among the rest.

“I’m pretty mentally strong and feel like I can take anything that comes my way.

“As the years go on, recruiters are starting to look at the VFL a lot more and that works in my favour,” he said.

“I was a little bit unlucky, and things haven’t fallen my way, really, but I’ll keep going.

“I haven’t doubted myself, my goal is to play AFL and people knocking me back doesn’t stop me because you hear so many stories about blokes who get knocked back and then they make it.

“I’ve been told that I should be drafted but haven’t really had the chance to talk to anyone yet.

“It’s my dream to just get an opportunity, and I’d do anything to get that.

“In the end I’m confident and, hopefully, it comes one day.

“If it doesn’t happen this year (AFL draft) I’ll come back and just aim to play regular VFL senior footy considering there won’t be Development League next year.”

Heading into his first grand final with the Casey Demons’ Development League this weekend coming, Perry is trying to keep a lid on the excitement and prepare the exact same way he always does.

“I don’t get too nervous in games, and I try and treat it like normal games. I’ve played plenty of finals before so I’m pretty confident in my ability to back myself and play well,” he said.

“It’s a great opportunity to get the last Development League premiership and make a bit of history with the club.”

Thunder rocks City in the end, unforgettably Sunday 3 September is a day the Dandenong Thunder is likely to never forget.

Not only did it defeat a powerful Northcote City FC side 2-0 in stellar fashion, but it was also crowned the NPL2 champions of 2017.

After taking out the NPL 2 East crown officially only a month ago, the Thunder met City - the NPL2 West champions of 2017 - in a cutthroat grand final in dismal and rainy Melbourne conditions.

The game lived up to the hype with both sides featuring some of the most impressive names in the NPL. Knowing that they will light it up in the NPL’s top tier in 2018, both sides left no stone unturned in trying to make a name for themselves.

With both defences at the top of their respective games, the game went into extra time after both sides drew 0-0 at full time.

As the crowd began to raise its voice and the noise spurred the two teams on, the Thunder was the one to lift.

Brilliant leader Veton Korcari got the ball through the net in the 105th minute through a spectacular bicycle goal, sending the strong Thunder crowd into raptures.

Another piece of magic by Korcari in the 120th minute sealed the championship, with Alon Blumgart finding the goals after a brilliant set-up by his teammate.

Scenes of jubilation filled Knights Stadium in Sunshine, with the Thunder capping off what was a truly extraordinary season, further proving just how badly the south-east wants an A-League side in the region.

Amazing comeback has Rays on the right track

By Nick Creely TAC CUP REVIEW - ELIMINATION FINAL On famous Victoria Park, a ground that is iconic in the landscape of Australian rules football, the Dandenong Stingrays pulled off a comeback for the ages on Saturday afternoon to advance through to a preliminary final next week.

Against arch rivals Eastern Ranges, the ‘Rays came from the clouds to clinch a famous 13-point victory after being down by as much as 51-points early in the third quarter.

In a truly forgettable first half, in which the ‘Rays were made to look second rate, the Ranges punished their highly fancied opponents with potency in attack, destroying them on the outside to almost put the contest to bed.

Star midfielder Hunter Clark didn’t mince words when describing his side’s first half, but said in the rooms during the long break there was a steely resolve about the group.

“Heading into half time we were a bit down because we knew we were playing some pretty weak footy and not playing for each other, but the coaches and the players were full of encouragement and belief for one another,” he said.

The comeback show began with the brilliance of Luke Davies-Uniacke, who roved a contest 35 out from goal, before steadying to kick a teamlifting goal.

Davies-Uniacke - combined with Clark and Mitch Cotter in the guts lifted their rating, and Bailey Williams in the ruck started to win some crucial contests against Sam Hayes as the game shifted in momentum.

Despite dominating the territorial battle in the third term - kicking five goals to just one - the ‘Rays still needed to chase down a 23-point deficit in the final quarter.

Davies-Uniacke once again got the ball rolling in the opening minute of the final term, chopping off a scrambled kick out of defence to set up a clever soccer goal from Jai Nanscawen in the square, and suddenly the margin was slashed to just 17-points.

A relatively simple miss to Ranges youngster Jamieson Rossiter directly in front, only 15 seconds later, opened the door once again, and the ‘Rays made them pay with another Nanscawen snap only five minutes later.

The ‘Rays didn’t stop there, with Jamie Plumridge eventually putting his side in front after some sublime evasion work from Davies-Uniacke in the pocket to set the goal up.

And with powerful forward Riley D’Arcy (three goals) - who turned heads the most with a brilliant second half in the forward line - looking ominous in attack, the ‘Rays kicked another two goals to ice an extraordinary victory.

Clark - who was once again outstanding through the midfield - said the turnaround came down to the simple things in what was a huge momentum builder coming into the prelim.

“Not too much changed structurally (but) a few players were moved around but we just knew

“Its huge for our confidence because we rated Eastern as one of the top teams all year and to come back from 50 odd points just gives us belief against anyone.”

With the game on line, the games of DaviesUniacke and Darcy were inspirational - Clark certainly agrees.

“Lukey was huge all day and just kept playing for his team mates and showed everyone why he is one of the best players in the country with his dominant game today.

“Darc was also huge using his physical pressure and being a real presence and leader in the

forward line for the younger boys down there and got his reward that he deserved.

“They were both awesome for us.”

Eagles soar over the Hawks

By Nick Creely JOURNAL FOOTBALL REVIEW SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - SECOND SEMI FINAL Despite falling to the all-conquering Chelsea Heights on Saturday by 22-points, there is a strong possibility that Keysborough will get another crack at the Demons in just two weeks’ time.

In the 12.8(80) to 8.10(58) loss, the Burras just couldn’t quite match the forward power of the Demons, but were far from disgraced as they take key learnings on how to beat a side that has had their measure in all three of their matches this season.

After a dead even first quarter, with both sides shaky in front of goal, the Dees got the match-winning break in the second quarter when Jessie Odell, Philip Smith and James Robertson kicked majors to bring the margin out to 18-points.

It proved to be a bridge too far for the Burra, despite fighting back admirably in the second half but every time they threatened, the Dees always had the answers.

Cory Hargreaves (four goals) was a shining light in a tough loss, Chris Bryan roamed the ground and managed to kick two goals, while Riet Pal threatened the game with many great moments.

The Burras get another chance to qualify for the grand final this week with a preliminary final showdown.

Caulfield and Murrumbeena played their semi final on Sunday, after the Journal went to print.

DIVISION 3 - PRELIMINARY FINAL The Doveton Eagles have booked themselves a date with Endeavour Hills in this week’s grand final after a barnstorming victory over minor premiers Hallam on Saturday, 7.13(55) to 11.5(71).

Surprisingly, the Hawks - who finished two games clear at the top-of-the-ladder have now been knocked out in straight sets.

In a game of high intensity and predictable low scoring, the Eagles simply took their chances in front of goals.

After an even first quarter, the Hawks broke clear to take a two-goal lead at half time, before a seven goal to two second half saw the Eagles extend their season into the last weekend.

With goals scarce and hard to come by, four goals to Adam Read proved crucial in the end, while the brilliance of Corrie Wilson in clutch moments continued, with the veteran midfielder providing the class throughout the match.

Justin Marriott and Rob Mackay were strong contributors for the Hawks in a tough day at the office for a club that has done so much right in 2017.

The Division 3 grand final between the Falcons and Eagles will be played at Jack Barker Oval in Cheltenham on Saturday.

History beckons as Falcons keep things grounded

By Nick Creely Saturday’s Southern Football Division 3 grand final at Jack Barker Oval is set to be a significant milestone in the history of the Endeavour Hills Football Club.

Not only will the Falcons play off for their chance at glory against local rivals Doveton Eagles, but the club will be playing for its first piece of senior silverware - ever.

Coming into the 2017 season, the Falcons had never played a senior final - let alone book a ticket to the big dance.

Senior coach Rob Dipper is trying to keep a lid on things at Barry Simon Reserve despite the obvious excitement, and said that they are trying to approach the massive contest in the same manner they always do.

“We haven’t changed too much - we did P3 recovery in Berwick last Tuesday, and the guys just got into the pools and threw the balls around,” he said of the side’s preparation for the biggest game in the club’s history.

“This week it’s business as normal- we won’t change our preparation too much I wouldn’t have thought.”

The Falcons and Eagles have squared the ledger this season, with both sides tasting success against the other at different stages.

Dipper said past results mean nothing now, with finals football a completely different kettle of fish.

“Come finals footy it’s a different ball game - if you try and draw something from a home-andaway game it’s probably not going to be the same,” he said.

“The first time we played them was early in the season, and they (Doveton Eagles) really did a number on us, and it was about nine-goals, but our side from then is completely different, and when we beat them later in the season we understand they had a few missing - they are a really great side.

“We have to be on from the start or they will run all over us - they are a really strong side with big bodies.”

Season 2017 has been nonetheless a major success for the club - after finishing third on the ladder, the Falcons defeated Ashwood by 21-points in the qualifying final, before an incredible semi final win over Hallam saw them earn the week off and direct entry into the biggest game of the season.

“We set some rules and standards that we wanted to deliver on this year, and that’s on and off the field - one of our main goals was to play finals, and to finish third on the ladder and to win our first and second finals was probably not where we thought we’d be,” Dipper said.

“We were confident we would make finals we feel we’re in a good enough position now and what will be will be (on Saturday).

“We’ve played some great footy over the last month, the boys are in good form and we owe it to ourselves to finish off our hard work.”

Hard loss is season inspiration

By Nick Creely Dandenong captain Tom Donnell and his fellow Panther teammates are flying through the preseason with a chip on their shoulders.

After finishing second on the 2016/17 Premier Cricket ladder, the Panthers were disappointing in a 130-run semi-final loss to Melbourne, which ending their season.

With that firmly etched into their minds, Donnell said that it was a painful reminder of never taking games for granted and it will be used as a source to drive them further this season.

“It was certainly a disappointing finish so certainly there’s a chip on the shoulder - especially for the senior guys who played in that game.

“We had a good year and one-and-a-half days essentially ruined that. We’ll take that with us this year and try to build on it,” he said.

“When we get in that position to win finals we have to take it, because they don’t come around every day.

“We’ll hopefully play finals and push further than what we did.”

Stability has been the theme through what has been a seamless pre-season for the club at Shepley Oval, with the club also taking the opportunity to get away from the unpredictable Melbourne weather.

“It’s been mainly indoor stuff with the weather, but we had a trip up the Gold Coast a few weekends ago which was great for the guys that came on that,” Donnell said of the pre-season.

“We’ve done the trip three times, it’s a connection with the Gold Coast Cricket Club who we have a great relationship with through Dan Doran.

“We had 12 go this year, mainly the senior players and we go up, train and have a one-day and twenty20 game - it’s pretty hectic but really good and it’s nice to get some good weather.”

The Panthers have managed to retain the majority of their list as well as add former St Kilda paceman Jak Jowett and Yarraville spinner Akshat Buch.

Dandenong youngster Patrick Turner is one of many pace bowlers who are ready to take the competition by storm. 165883 But the biggest coup of all this season is the return of Dandenong champion and former international cricketer Darren Pattinson.

“The only person we’re probably missing is Cal (Parkinson), who is not coming back out (from the UK) which is a shame, we were keen to get him back because he had a great season last year for us - but everyone else is still on board,” Donnell said.

“We picked up a spinner in Akshat from Yarraville so he’ll add to us.

“Patto is keen. He came up to the Gold Coast and bowled his 10 overs at full tilt, which was good.

“He’s had three or four years off but looks so impressive.”

bowling group will look come Round 1, but is excited by the thought of what all his quickies bring.

“We have got a deep bowling group, which is what we need.

“All our pace bowlers will get an opportunity at some point this year which is exciting.

“We’ve got other blokes like Patty Turner, Matt Wetering and Adam McMaster as well - I expect all those guys to play this year,” he said.

Retro race set to honour half-century partnership Shell V-Power Racing Team will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the relationship between Shell and Dick Johnson with a special livery for the Sandown 500 ‘Retro Round’.

Shell’s support of Johnson began in 1967, making it the longest corporate partnership in Australian motorsport and one of the longest in any Australian sport.

Ford Everest is a comfortable urban SUV with serious off-road credentials. smallest of containers - an accident waiting to happen.

All Everest models employ an 8.0-inch colour touchscreen for infotainment system display and control together with a 4.2-inch colour instrumentation screen for driving data. The system uses Ford’s Sync3 connectivity system with Applink and enhanced voice control. It syncs with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Trend and Titanium get satellite navigation with a traffic message channel.

The audio system includes DAB+ digital and 10 speakers with Aux, iPod, USB and SD card input ports. The ports are sensibly located at the rear of a smartphone-sized pocket at the base of the dashboard.

Ford Everest has been awarded a five-star ANCAP rating.

Standard safety equipment in all models includes seven airbags with curtain ‘bags covering all three seat rows; enhanced ABS brakes; trailer sway control; reversing camera and rear parking sensors, the last two features a bonus in such a large vehicle.

The mid-spec Trend adds halogen daytime running lights; front parking sensors; adaptive cruise control with forward collision alert; lanekeeping assist; and auto high-beam control.

Titanium tops off the safety feature list with tyre pressure monitoring; blind spot monitoring; active park assist; LED daytime running lights; and, one of our favourites, rear cross-traffic alert which warns of approaching vehicles when reversing out of front-in parking spots.

Our Ambiente used a key-in-ignition engine start, which is still my preferred method. No problem during the day but because the keyhole is located behind the steering wheel and isn’t illuminated at night it frequently proved difficult to find. We even had to either turn on the interior lights or open the front door to locate it.

Everest’s Aussie engineering input shows in its excellent balance of rugged off-road capabil-

ity and refined on-road manners enhanced by the Terrain Management System.

On the open road our AWD Everest proved surprisingly stable through moderately sharp corners noticeably less body roll than we found in some competitors. Steering is precise and responsive.

We didn’t get the opportunity to use the optional towing pack but with Everest’s peak torque starting at 1750 rpm we’ve no doubt that lowdown pulling power would have no trouble with the typical Australian cargo of horse float or boat.

We did do a couple of laps around our local rough track and found just how well the big Ford coped with sections of rocky and rutted terrain.

There’s plenty of ground clearance and the TMS combined with the traction control and accessible torque proved suggested that it could handle much more extended and challenging tests. We might have to try and schedule one in!

Interior noise has been reduced through the use of sound-deadening under the bonnet, in the floor and firewall giving the big Ford a more refined, SUV rather than pickup, feel.

We split our fuel consumption readings between the on-road and off-road segments of our week-long road test. On the suburban / motorway component we logged an impressive 7.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the motorway. However, true to form, the beast devoured anything up to 16 litres of diesel per 100 prowling around town.

With local vehicle production all but finished our locally-based companies are searching for means of proving that they can still make contributions to the industry.

New Ford Everest is a promising example of how Aussie know-how can be utilised around the world. Let’s hope this is just the beginning.

Ford Everest is a big, rugged 4WD / SUV that’s been around in other countries since 2003 but didn’t arrive in Australia until the release of the third generation model in late 2015.

Although it’s fully imported from Thailand it is an important model for Ford Australia as the company moves away from vehicle production while retaining local employment by providing technical input through its research and development investment.

Although the arrival of Ford Everest almost dove-tailed with the departure of the popular Territory the two vehicles are quite different.

Everest is a serious off-roader that’s built on the same platform as the company’s Ranger ute while the locally-produced Territory was a typical urban family wagon based on the Falcon.

Everest, as the name suggests, is big. At just under five metres long and over two metres wide it takes up a fair bit of road space with converts into a versatile and spacious cabin capable of carrying up to seven occupants and gear in relative comfort.

Our Everest road test vehicle was the entrylevel Ambiente AWD. It comes with 17-inch alloy wheels which tend to look a bit puny inside the large wheel arches designed to cater for the 20-inchers of the top-spec Titanium.

The big and bold chromed trapezoidal radiator grille is flanked by the latest in integrated projector headlamp / daytime running light set-ups that improves visibility to approaching drivers in poor weather conditions. At the rear there sculpted tail lamps with integrated LED lighting.

The higher specced Trend and Titanium models also get running boards.

Everest is available in three variants, Ambiente, Trend and Titanium spanning a price range from $47,990 to $74,701. The entry-level Ambiente has five seats with a pair of third-row seats available for an additional $1000. Trend and Titanium models have seven seats.

Ambiente and Trend come with either rear- or four-wheel drive.

All Everest models are powered by Ford’s 3.2-litre five-cylinder turbo-diesel Duratorq engine as used in the Ranger.

It generates 147 kW of power at 3000 rpm and torque of 470 Nm from 1750 to 2500 revs. Towing capacity of up to 3000 kg is offered if the trailer is braked.

It’s not the quietest diesel engine we’ve encountered but shouldn’t be an issue with a vehicle of this sort.

The only gearbox is a six-speed automatic.

For off-road driving Everest uses Ford’s Terrain Management System (TMS) to alter throttle response, transmission, traction control and an intelligent four-wheel drive system to maximise performance under varying conditions.

From a knob on the centre console the driver can select from normal, snow, gravel, grass, sand or rock.

The control also incorporates hill descent control, which can be activated in any conditions. An electronic locking rear differential helps prevent the rear wheels from spinning while driving offroad, increasing traction in difficult terrain.

It can be locked automatically when using offroad TMS modes, or switched manually using the differential lock button.

All Everests are available with seven seats, either standard or as an option. The second row slides forward far enough to improve access to the back row.

Two adults and three children can travel in comfort although a third adult can get into the centre middle row with a fair bit of elbow contact.

The second row seats have a 60/40 split and the third row 50/50.

With all seats in place there is a reasonable 450 litres of storage space left.

Lowering the third seats (there is a power-fold facility) extends that to 1050 litres while with all five rear seats down it can carry up to 2010 litres.

Ambiente and Trend have cloth seats, Titanium gets leather trim.

There are air conditioning vents and controls at the back of the centre console to assist rear passenger comfort.

All Everest models get dual-zone climate control. There's a power-operated tailgate in the Trend and Titanium.
