Sculpting Coldstream Coldstream residents are invited to help shape the look and feel of their town at a workshop on Tuesday, 10 October. Coldstream Community Voice, Boral Australia and Yarra Ranges Council are working together to bring an artistic sculpture or landmark to Main Street, Coldstream and Yarra Ranges Council wants to hear what residents have to say about future plans for the Main Street.

A path linking Coldstream’s shopping and housing precincts and Coombe Estate, constructed by council this year, includes resting points which provide blank canvases for artwork, plantings, seating and historical information and Boral is contributing $50,000 to commission a local artist to develop the artwork.

Recycling and re-using are central to the operation of most opportunity shops, but John Tabone at Maybe We’ve Got It Op Shop in Coldstream has taken that philosophy to a whole new level.

While other op shops have racks of clothes, kitchenware and other donated goods as their drawcard, the front of John’s shop is stacked high with boxes, planters, mini-fences, frames and other things made from old fence palings.

The idea for the ‘add-on’ that has turned into a major part of the shop’s turnover, came from a heap of boxes that had been thrown on the scrapheap.

“I salvaged them and brought them here and they were selling left, right and centre,” John explained.

So he got the word out that he could use old palings and before long he had a good supply,

as well as a growing customer base putting in orders for boxes of all sizes and shapes, easels, benches, book shelves and more.

His semi-retirement after being in catering for almost 20 years has turned into a full-time job, something he never counted on when he decided to open the shop.

Originally the shop supported a charity in India, but, with his wife Rae joining him, they are now supporting local groups including the Discovery Community Centre in Lilydale.

John is supplying local businesses such as florists and produce suppliers with boxes made to suit their needs.

Martin Cheney from Yarra Valley Harvest, a couple of shops down, says the rustic, recycled boxes are perfect for their hampers.

“We’re certified organic, so we’re into sustainability. These boxes are so much better for the

environment and so much better for humans being made from recycled fence palings and that fits nicely with what we’re doing,” he said.

When they needed a stand for a major industry event, with buyers coming from all over Australia, they went to John.

“The whole stand is built by John from recycled fence palings,” Martin said, obviously pleased with the collaboration.

For John, making beautiful things out of ‘stuff’ is tremendously rewarding, and raising money for local causes makes it all the more so.

“I think we need to change our ways and think recycling instead of burning or even mulching,” he says.

“With most things, you can either make something out of it, or re-use it.”

Detective Sergeant Darren Williams from the Major Collision Unit said he had attended the previous fatality in April and that the regularity of incidents along the stretch of road was cause for action. “Having to attend another fatal well within 100 metres of the other one is obviously concerning,� Det Sgt Williams said. “The causation for this crash is still under investigation and I understand too that the road was wet - whether that played a part in this crash we are yet to determine.�

A windy section of the HealesvilleKooweerup road where two people died and three others were injured in April has become the focus of police investigation after another life was lost on the road, only 100 metres from the last fatal crash.

The fatal crash which occurred on Sunday 3 September has sparked calls for VicRoads to urgently address the dangerous stretch of road.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated, however it is believed the car was travelling along Healesville-Kooweerup Road around 3.40pm when it lost control around a bend and collided with an oncoming vehicle.

We built a jeep - have wheels, will travel

By Kath Gannaway A collaboration of community groups over more than five years has resulted in an impressive landmark for Healesville RSL, and recognition of the School of Army Health which once operated in Healesville.

The restoration of a WW2 Willys Jeep has been a labour of love involving groups from Rotary and Healesville High School students to the Badger Creek Men’s Shed, and the RSL.

The jeep, which stands proud at the front of Healesville RSL, will be officially dedicated to the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps, as an historic link to the School of Army Health.

The School of Army Health was located at the old Summerleigh Lodge in Albert Road, Healesville from the early 1950s through to 1986 when the school moved to Portsea.

The jeep itself has a long and interesting history, which will

be explained at the ceremony, along with the story of how a passionate group of men’sshedders have brought it back to life.

The RSL is inviting community members, and in particular those with a connection to men and women who served at the School of Army Health, to join them for the unveiling and dedication ceremony which will be held at the RSL at 11am on Saturday, 9 September. Inquiries to 0412 009 181.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit detectives have released details of two men they believe may be able to assist them in relation to a burglary which occurred earlier this month at a store in Yellingbo.

It is believed the offenders forced entry to the premises on Healesville-Kooweerup Road on Thursday 17 August about 3.45am.

Once inside, the offenders stole cash and cigarette lighters before fleeing the scene.

Police have released details of two men they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries.

The first man is perceived to be of Caucasian appearance, slim build and wearing sneakers, shorts, a hooded windcheater and gloves.

The second man is perceived to be of Caucasian appearance, solid build and wearing a white windcheater with an Adidas logo, shorts and black sneakers.

Both men were wearing face masks.

Sometime overnight on 2 September, a sheep had its throat cut on a property off Gembrook Launching Place road.

Police believe the offender used a sharp blade to cut the animal's throat. Anyone who has any information or has seen suspicious activity is urged to contact police on triple zero or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Barely a day passes without one of our physios being asked, ‘should I put heat or ice on it?’

The best way to answer this question in general is to actually explain the factors that need consideration.

Remember, ice is used to restrict circulation, and heat to increase circulation: How old is the injury?

Ice immediately post-injury for 10 to 15 minutes, which you can repeat every two to three hours for the first 72 hours.

The acute inflammatory stage only lasts for around 14 days.

Within this time period, most acute or sudden injuries continue to respond well to ice rather than heat but there are exceptions.

What type of injury is it?

Muscular strains can be heated before activity after a couple of days, and even muscular tears after five to 10 days depending on bruising.

Ligament sprains will respond much better to ice for the length of the injury - even for weeks and months, especially if there is persistent swelling.

Same goes for post-surgery.

And discs and tendons respond differently again, as they have a very poor blood supply and react different to thermal changes - always seek advice for these injuries as the wrong management can have disastrous effects.

Is there swelling?

Swelling should be managed with regular elevation above heart level, and almost always with icing at the same time, even if it is a long-term or chronic problem.

Is there reduced or increased skin sensation, or skin colour or temperature changes?

This can indicate problems with the circulation or the nerve supply to the regional circulation, which is poten-

Opposition to crime is up

By Kath Gannaway Crime has been identified as a key issue for the Liberal Opposition at the next election (2018) and a forum at Woori Yallock this month aims to identify the major concerns of Yarra Ranges residents.

Eildon MP Cindy McLeish and Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe are hosting the Yarra Valley Law and Order Forum with guest speakers Shadow Attorney General John Pessutto and Shadow Minister for Corrections, Police and Community Safety Edward O’Donohue.

Issues on the agenda will include police resources, CCTV cameras, home invasion, street crime, family violence, drug abuse and bail laws and there is an invitation for residents and business operators who have been affected by crime to speak up and share their experience.

Statistics for the Yarra Ranges from the Crime Statistics Agency over the two years have also seen increases in burglary and break-and-enter from 572 offences to 774 (up 26 per cent); theft - 2096 to 2715 (up 22.8 per cent); as-

sault - 646 to 724 (up 10.7 per cent) and breaches of orders - 613 to 997 (up 44 per cent).

Paradoxically, drug dealing and trafficking is down from 85 to 59 (-30.5 per cent), along with cultivating or manufacturing drugs down from 60 to 33 (-81.8 per cent), while drug use and possession is up 349 to 558 (37.46 per cent).

Ms McLeish said Mr Pesutto and Mr O’Donohue were attending forums throughout Victoria.

“The Coalition team is actively engaging with the Victorian community to develop our plan to end this state’s law and order crisis,” Ms McLeish said.

Yarra Glen Chamber of Commerce chairman Rod Thomas said the chamber was talking directly to police to address crime in Yarra Glen and was actively engaged in getting CCTV for the town.

“To address the burgeoning crime problem in Yarra Glen we have advocated for and have been successful in getting CCTV cameras with the chamber paying the insurance on them,” he said.

“We feel this will go a long way to identifying and then apprehending people involved in criminal activity.”

The Mail has this year reported on burglaries from businesses in Yarra Glen and Yarra Junction in April and May and in July reported on a spike in burglaries on semi-rural property around Mount Evelyn and Seville.

Lyn Spain, owner of Yarra Travel Junction in Yarra Junction, was robbed for the first time in 27 years earlier this year.

She believes businesses in the valley have it pretty good compared to inner suburbs, but welcomed the opportunity that the forum will offer for people to put their case and find out what is available

to keep Yarra Valley businesses safe.

Healesville and Yarra Junction have CCTV in their main business areas and Federal Government funding of $420,000 was set to provide CCTV cameras in Yarra Glen, Woori Yallock, Mooroolbark, Monbulk and Mount Evelyn.

Federal Casey MP Tony Smith said the cameras would provide a valuable expanded security network for local police, create one of the most extensive networks in any locality and deter and detect crime and anti-social behaviour.

“Where they have been installed, they have reduced local crime by up to 70 per cent,” Mr Smith said.

Upper Yarra Secondary College students have shown their talent for visual arts as part of Hepatitis Victoria’s ‘Street Shots’ health promotion and exhibition.

Eighteen UYSC students took part in the program, which uses video and photography to raise awareness about viral hepatitis transmission among young people.

Students attended an information session in June on the risks association with hepatitis B and C run by Hepatitis Victoria and took that information to produce photograph or video, accompanied by an essay.

Their works were part of a state-wide exhibition in Footscray in July with winning UYSC works going to Meg Huisken for Outstanding In-

dividual Photo, Amy Knight for people’s Choice Individual Photo, Dayne Leeds, Shantae Dolby and Charlee Relf-Bansagi for Outstanding Group Video and Amy Knight and Tara Mataele for People’s Choice Group Video.

The school community had the opportunity to view the works at the school’s Street Shots Exhibition, on Wednesday 30 August.

Tara Mataele acted the main character in the winning People’s Choice Group Video.

She said it was a rewarding program to be part of.

“Education was the key message and it was a good feeling when you saw the final video,” she said.

“The more you talk about, and educate people about hepatitis the better it will be.”

Letters With dignity I read with interest Elissa Roper’s considered thoughts on euthanasia, and can’t see why John Whiteoak, in his response to her letter, ‘Choice and dignity’ (Mail, 29 August), would be “furious”.

We should all consider the issues surrounding euthanasia in a thoughtful manner and there will understandably be differences of opinion.

I, for one, want our medical professionals to provide care, to look after patients and family during trying times.

We don’t want to run the risk of

having our doctors forcibly holding down our loved ones and ending their lives - as was the case with a Dutch woman recently (www. independent.co.uk/news/world/ europe/doctor-netherlands-lethalinjection-dementia-euthanasiaa7564061.html).

The prescribing and assisting of “a lethal dose of medication“ is just not care.

Better radio, can’t hear it

By Derek Schlennstedt Victorian regional and rural residents will lose the ability to listen to emergency services radio from 2018 onwards.

Police and emergency services in the Yarra Ranges are included in a digital radio rollout and will transition from the StateNet radio network to the state’s encrypted digital radio network next year.

The Andrews Labor Government announced in 2016 that it would make the transition to replace outdated and unsafe police and emergency services radios.

The new radio equipment will replace the old analogue system with new secure, encrypted digital equipment providing better voice clarity, coverage and the capability to track the location of devices.

The Victorian Government awarded Telstra an amendment

to its 2013 regional digital radio networks arrangement, which will see the police, state emergency services, correctional services, lifesavers and CFA brigades in outer metropolitan including the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley gain access to the network.

Minister for Emergency Services James Merlino said the transition to digital would help keep Victorians safe.

“We are giving our police and emergency services the modern equipment they need to help keep Victorians safe.”

“The safety of our emergency services personnel is paramount and this new system will eliminate key black spots, provide a secure network and make it easier for them to do their vital work across regional Victoria.”

But it is believed that the new system will mean residents will be unable to use scanners to

Graeme Bates Healesville CFA captain said that the digital system would be much better for the station and also noted that although people might not be able to access the radio, there were many apps and services to monitor incidents.

“It’s definitely a better system for us, in that it works better because it’s digital.”

“On the radios we push buttons and it tells them when we are in attendance to a fire - if we are in trouble it sends out a duress signal.”

Labor provided $11.5million for CFA, Life Saving Vic., SES and Victoria Police to upgrade the radio network.

Tale of timely inspiration

By Kath Gannaway Inspiration is at the heart of ‘From This Place’, the book and exhibition of the same name launched on Friday, 1 September at Warburton Arts Centre.

Fourteen inspiring women artists of the Upper Yarra Valley were celebrated and showcased as more than 100 people gathered for an emotional and joyful ‘birthing’ of the book-child of Warburton photographer Angela Rivas and writer Lindy Schneider.

The women collaborated to create the book and exhibition of photographs and words that provide profound insights into the artists’ lives and what inspires them and their work.

Sharing the joy of opening the first box of the finished books, Lindy likened the process to giving birth, starting with an idea and nurturing and growing it to create something unique, beautiful and joyful.

The book brings together the stories and images of 14 local women artists, among them musicians, sculptors, painters, writers, poets and weavers, textile artists and photographers, and their connection to nature, the Yarra River, to community and to a life sustained by their art.

The exhibition space at Warburton Arts Centre is filled with stunning photographs of the artists - Belinda Rogers, Sioux Dollman, Marlee Nebauer, Jena Bedson, Maya Ward, Adrienne Kneebone, Kate Baker, Shlomit Moria, Indigo Perry, Gillian Farrow, Lucy Pierce, Jo Rothwell, Jenny Davis, Jeminah Alli Reidy, and of Lindy and Angela.

Each photograph is accompanied by words of the featured artist that provide an insight into their lives and their art.

Lindy said ‘From This Place’ was a book to celebrate and elevate women.

“I’m happy and proud to raise the

profile of women artists here and for these women to be seen and heard,” she said.

Angela thanked the women for their honesty and for allowing her to photograph them.

“It takes a lot of trust for them to allow me to come into their world and I am so grateful for that,” she said.

The book was officially launched

by Jenny Davies, head of Yarra Ranges Council’s Creative Communities Department.

“I know and love many of these 14 women, and I know a lot of women artists who are not in this book. In these stories I read their stories as well,” she said.

“The Yarra Valley and the Upper Yarra Valley is an amazing place. I think this book captures that and what makes it special and what makes the people who live here special,” she said.

Sally Brennan, a director of the Warburton Bendigo Community Bank also spoke of the special contribution women and women artists make in the Upper Yarra and said it was an enormous privilege, as stewards of community money, to be able to support the artistry and creativity of women.

Lindy and Angela thanked all the people who supported the project, including Yarra Ranges Council, the Community Bank and the 146 people bought into the project in its gestation through the Pozible crowd-funding campaign.

“The project was going to live or die because of whether that happened and we are so grateful to the people who purchased the book under the Pozible campaign,” Lindy said.

Maya Ward spoke on behalf of the artists expressing their gratitude for the opportunity to grow through the experience.

“From This Place” exhibition is on show until 3 October before moving Oscars On the Yarra as part of Open Studios and then to Yarra Ranges Regional Museum.

Burras go for gold

I play the pokies a fair bit, but it’s not really a habit.

A packed crowd soaked up every moment at the Warburton-Millgrove Sporting Club to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the Warburton-Millgrove Football and Netball club on Saturday 19 August.

Past players and members came from far and wide, including many from interstate, to catch up with old team-mates and share their memories of their time involved at the Burras.

MC Steve Noonan took the crowd through an interesting and sometimes humorous presentation of the exciting journey the club has taken since amalgamation of the two rival clubs in 1967.

The atmosphere was full of anticipation as the Best Ever Netball Team (2005-'16) was announced and the inaugural Hall of Fame inductees were introduced.

Congratulations went to all on a wonderful achievement.

As part of the memorabilia available during the weekend, a wonderful publication was launched, ‘A History of the Warburton-Millgrove Football and Netball Club’. Copies are available through the club’s website www.burras.com.au The Warburton-Millgrove Football Club looks forward to the next 50 years of a wonderful sporting community.

By Kath Gannaway Healesville, Woori Yallock, Mount Evelyn and GembrookCockatoo junior football clubs shared the excitement and rewards of the 2017 AFL Yarra Ranges Junior Grand Finals on Sunday.

Woori Yallock came away with the first Premiership Cup of the day in the Under 11s in a low-scoring, goal for goal four quarters that saw the Tigers win by one point 2.1(13) to Healesville Red’s young Bloods on 2.0(12).

Baylin Spencer played a brilliant game for Woori, and likewise Zane Anderson-Hunter, who were umpires’ choice for Best on the Ground.

Woori coach Dallas Spencer congratulated both teams on their persistence in what was a hard-fought game and had a special pat on the back for his boys who he said had dug deep when it mattered.

The Tigers and Bloods ran out onto the Yarra Glen oval next to battle it out for the Under 12 flag.

Healesville made the running from the first bounce and despite the efforts of a determined Woori came away with a convincing 36-point win 7.3(45) to 1.3(9).

Healesville coach John Baxter said they knew from the start of the season that Woori would be their biggest rivals and it proved the case.

To his team, “The Invincibles” he said their training and work ethic had paid off. “The way you can work at training and way you compete on Sundays gives all the people here so

much joy to watch,” he said.

Best on Ground for Healesville was Cameron Nyko and for Woori Yallock Matty Milkins.

The Under 14s between Healesville and Mount Evelyn was always going to be a close one, but no-one could have guessed the final outcome - the first draw in memory of an Under 14 grand final.

In another low-scoring game the Bloods and Rovers held each other to account at every turn and had the crowd on tenterhooks as the score hung on 26 points each with just minutes to the final siren.

Some great work by both backlines held off what could have been the winning shot at the sticks, and the scoreboard told the story Healesville 3.8(26) - Mount Evelyn 4.2(26).

Another five minutes each end saw desperation football with both sides throwing everything they could at breaking the deadlock, including some hardball tackling and long kicks, to face another siren on 26-all.

The league officials, and coaches declared a worthy result for two teams that had won in equal measure.

“You never game up,” Healesville coach Marcus Howie told his team and Mount Evelyn coach Mark Holly had the same message.

“Two teams have butted heads for an extra 10 minutes and you could not wish for a better result,” he said.

“You have both won a grand final; both teams deserved that win,” he said.

The Under 16s saw the hills sides represented with Monbulk Hawks taking on GembrookCockatoo in a game that gave spectators some courageous football.

Monbulk were the team to beat on paper, but it was Gembrook-Cockatoo who lifted on the day and ultimately out-run Monbulk to register the win 10.12(72) to 6.8(44).

Gembrook-Cockatoo coach Brad Snoxell paid credit to Monbulk saying they had played a stellar year to stay in top spot.

“The ball bounced our way a bit today,” he said, but gave his boys their dues also saying they had fulfilled the vision they had at the beginning of the year to be holding the 2017 premiership cut aloft on grand final day.

“You have worked extremely hard to be standing here,” he said.

Frankie Trott was Best On Ground for Gembrook-Cockatoo and Austin Richardson for Monbulk.

Chair of AFL Yarra Ranges congratulated all the teams who ran out on the biggest day of the year for the junior competition saying it had been a great day for junior football.

“It’s the first ever draw in a grand final for the Under 14s and the result after two ends of extra time was a good one,” he said.

“It’s pleasing that the teams’ sportsmanship and the feeling between the clubs is obviously really strong.

“They respect each other ... win or lose that respect is there.

Division 1 Seniors Qualifying Final Seniors Olinda-Ferny Creek 14.22(106) d Healesville 5.17(47) Olinda will take on Woori Yallock next week in the second semi-final while Healesville will need to regroup as they take on Wandin in the last chance first semi next week. Olinda peppered the goals against the wind in the first quarter, kicking 2.8 to 1.4 but inaccuracy made the quarter time margin only 10 points. With the wind, they could not find the big sticks with another 2.8 to Healesville’s two behinds and the lead at the main break was 28 points. Their accuracy was still under question in the third term but both sides contested the ball and both kicked 3.5.

Olinda found the goals in the last, kicking 7.1 to 1.6 to come away with a big 59-point win at the final siren. Olinda will need to sort out their goalkicking for next week as 36 scoring shots to 22 should have seen the final margin a whole lot different to what it ended up.

Wandin bounced back in the second quarter, kicking 6.5 and held Upwey-Tecoma to only four behinds.

The margin at the main break was 17 points in Wandin’s favour. Inaccuracy plagued Wandin in the third term with a 1.5 quarter but Upwey could only manage 1.1. Upwey-Tecoma held Wandin scoreless in the last but could not convert when it mattered and only kicked five behinds to give Wandin the win at the final siren.

Lachie is another promising junior

from the cadet program, and after a winter lay-off, he has come back in great form to shoot 87 off-the-stick.

Junior Cross snared the A Grade voucher with a nett 70. Balls went all the way down to 76. The runner-up

was Mike Plant with a nett 71. NTPs went to Crossy Senior who couldn’t let Junior take all the limelight! Noel snared two of them, on the 3rd and the 15th. Good work, Dad! The 5th went to Kevin Conway and Sam Dennis was closest on the 12th.
